—Puf, pero ¿dónde vamos, Quique?

—No lo tengo claro, pero va a molar.

Ayer mi marido me llevó a un sitio increíble.

Unos vecinos del barrio que celebra las fiestas más antiguas de Alicante, el Raval Roig, iban a proclamarlo pregonero.

Es el barrio que queda justo enfrente de la playa del Postiguet, la playa de Alicante. Esa por la que pasa en coche prácticamente cualquiera que entra en la ciudad.

Inciso: el pregonero es la persona que pronuncia el discurso —el pregón— con el que se inauguran las fiestas. Y ser elegido es algo muy importante para un festero de pro.

Los vecinos se cuidan mucho de escoger a alguien a quien admiran y que comparte sus valores. Que te nombren pregonero es un enorme honor. Y Quique estaba profundamente emocionado y agradecido.

Así que allá que nos fuimos.

Llevo más de 50 años viviendo en Alicante y me avergüenza decir que no conocía el Raval Roig.

Porque allí me encontré con algunas de las personas más auténticas y maravillosas que he conocido en mucho tiempo.

Dos familias, de las de toda la vida del Señor, nos recibieron con un cariño tremendo en una preciosa plaza frente a la playa del Postiguet.

Nos llevaron por su barrio.

Por el barrio de sus padres. Por el de sus abuelos. Por el lugar en el que ellos mismos habían crecido, jugado y aprendido a mirar el mundo.

Es un barrio que conserva apenas un par de calles de su estructura original. En ellas todavía quedan algunas casas preciosas, de esas tan típicas de Alicante, con sus fachadas bajas y su sabor mediterráneo.

Pero la presión inmobiliaria se encargó de tirar la mayoría para levantar en su lugar edificios grandes, impersonales y bastante feos.

Sin embargo, aquellos festeros maravillosos se plantaban delante de cada casa y, con sus relatos, conseguían que dejáramos de ver únicamente paredes y ventanas.

Nos hacían imaginar —casi ver— cómo era aquel barrio de pescadores cuando ellos eran pequeños y corrían por sus calles.

Nos señalaban una esquina y allí aparecía una casa que ya no existe. Miraban hacia un portal y nosotros casi podíamos ver a sus abuelos sentados a la fresca. Nos contaban quién vivía en cada lugar, dónde jugaban y cómo era crecer con el mar siempre delante.

Y, durante un rato, el Raval Roig antiguo volvió a estar allí.

Luego nos llevaron a la sociedad, un bar de los de toda la vida, donde se amontonaban los trofeos, las fotografías antiguas y los recuerdos de décadas enteras de un Alicante auténtico y olvidado.

No nos pudieron hacer sentir más cómodos ni más acogidos.

De repente, nos sentimos conectados.

Extraordinariamente conectados con aquellas personas auténticas, cercanas y reales.

Personas orgullosas de sus raíces, de sus tradiciones y de la memoria de un barrio al que se niegan a dejar desaparecer.

Volvimos a casa deseando ver y participar en sus fiestas tradicionales: los concursos de calderos y tortillas de patata, los juegos de toda la vida, las bañás con cubos de agua…

Fiestas sin grandes artificios, pero llenas de verdad.

Nos hicieron volver a casa con una sonrisa.

Porque esas son las cosas que merecen la pena en la vida.

Las que nos hacen sentir que pertenecemos a algún lugar. Las que nos conectan con otras personas. Las que se convierten en recuerdos que seguimos contando muchos años después.

Las que hacen que, desde ayer, contemos las horas para que lleguen las fiestas del Raval Roig.

Y, reflexionando sobre ello, me he dado cuenta de que ese es también el espíritu de “5 actividades de ciencia para disfrutar este verano”.

No son proyectos tradicionales.

Te propongo cosas novedosas y divertidísimas, sí, pero, por encima de todo, actividades pensadas para que vivas momentos especiales con tus hij@s o con tus alumn@s.

Para que os sorprendáis junt@s. Para que os hagáis preguntas. Para que os riáis, experimentéis y descubráis cosas nuevas mientras el tiempo parece detenerse un poco.

Porque la ciencia puede ser mucho más que aprender contenidos. Puede ser la excusa perfecta para sentarse junt@s, mirar algo con curiosidad y volver a conectar.

Igual que aquellas familias nos abrieron las puertas de su barrio y consiguieron que sintiéramos como propia una historia que acabábamos de conocer, estas actividades quieren ayudarte a crear vuestra propia historia.

Una de esas que, dentro de unos años, tus hij@s recordarán diciendo:

«¿Te acuerdas de aquel verano en el que hicimos aquel experimento junt@s?»

Yesterday, my husband took me somewhere incredible.

Some residents from Raval Roig, the neighbourhood that celebrates Alicante’s oldest traditional festivities, were going to officially appoint him as their pregonero.

Alicante is a touristic city in the southest of Spain, where I live.

Raval Roig sits directly opposite Postiguet Beach, Alicante’s city beach. The one practically everyone drives past when entering the city.

A quick explanation: the pregonero is the person who delivers the opening speech—the pregón—that officially marks the beginning of the festivities. Being chosen is incredibly important to anyone who is truly passionate about their local celebrations.

The residents carefully select someone they admire and who shares their values. Being named pregonero is an enormous honour, and Quique felt deeply moved and grateful.

So off we went.

I have lived in Alicante for more than 50 years, and I am ashamed to admit that I had never properly visited Raval Roig.

Because there I met some of the most genuine and wonderful people I have encountered in a very long time.

Two families, the kind who have lived there since time immemorial, welcomed us with incredible warmth in a beautiful little square overlooking Postiguet Beach.

They showed us around their neighbourhood.

Their parents’ neighbourhood.

Their grandparents’ neighbourhood.

The place where they themselves had grown up, played and learned how to see the world.

The neighbourhood has preserved barely a couple of streets from its original layout. Along them, you can still find a few beautiful houses, the kind that are so typical of Alicante, with their low façades and unmistakable Mediterranean character.

But property development led to most of them being demolished and replaced with large, impersonal and rather ugly buildings.

And yet, those wonderful residents would stand in front of each house and, through their stories, make us stop seeing only walls and windows.

They helped us imagine—almost see—what that old fishing neighbourhood had been like when they were children running through its streets.

They would point towards a corner, and suddenly a house that no longer exists would appear before us.

They would look towards a doorway, and we could almost see their grandparents sitting outside in the evening air.

They told us who had lived in each place, where they used to play and what it was like to grow up with the sea always right in front of them.

And, for a little while, the old Raval Roig came back to life.

Afterwards, they took us to the neighbourhood social club, one of those old-fashioned bars filled with trophies, faded photographs and the memories of entire decades of an authentic, almost forgotten Alicante.

They could not have made us feel more comfortable or more welcome.

Suddenly, we felt connected.

Extraordinarily connected to those genuine, warm and down-to-earth people.

People who are proud of their roots, their traditions and the history of a neighbourhood they refuse to allow to disappear.

We returned home eager to experience and take part in their traditional festivities: competitions to make calderos and Spanish omelettes, traditional games and people being soaked with buckets of water…

Celebrations without grand displays or artificial spectacle, but filled with truth.

They sent us home smiling.

Because these are the things that truly matter in life.

The things that make us feel that we belong somewhere.

The things that connect us with other people.

The experiences that become memories we continue talking about many years later.

The kind that have made us count the days until the Raval Roig festivities begin.

And as I thought about everything we had experienced, I realised that this is also the spirit behind “5 Science Activities to Enjoy This Summer.”

They are not traditional projects.

I suggest activities that are original and great fun, yes, but above all, they are designed to help you share special moments with your children or your students.

To be amazed together.

To ask questions together.

To laugh, experiment and discover new things while, for a little while, time seems to slow down.

Because science can be so much more than simply learning facts.

It can be the perfect excuse to sit down together, look at something with curiosity and reconnect.

In the same way those families opened the doors to their neighbourhood and made us feel part of a story we had only just discovered, these activities are intended to help you create your own story.

One of those stories that, years from now, your children will remember by saying:

“Do you remember that summer when we did that experiment together?”

The other day I told you that, quite by chance, I met a renowned Hungarian doctor who is in charge of a huge programme to bring science into schools.

I showed him my lab, my danios, my Danioscopes, the children’s faces when they take part in the Danio project, the scientific posters they are able to create at the tender age of 8 after doing the project...

And then what had to happen, happened.

That Hungarian man, so determined that the children in his country should learn real science, fell in love with Danio.

What can I say? I’ve told you many times.

It’s inevitable.

So he invited me to Hungary to introduce Danio over there.

And off I went, with my Danioscopes in my backpack and the same workshop I’ve run so many times here.

I came back on Wednesday with a smile on my face that still hasn’t faded.

We ran two workshops.

Seventeen-year-old students.

Volunteers.

At the end of the school year.

With exams just around the corner.

And yes. They are told they’re going to do a really cool science workshop at the university, and they sign up without a second thought.

My extremely biased image of Hungary was of cold, serious people, and I found exactly the opposite.

Passionate, determined, brilliant, warm people, with a huge desire to learn.

The workshop was wonderful, and those students fell in love with Danio, as always happens.

And when the people in charge of the project saw the danios, and saw the excitement on those students’ faces, they said without hesitation:

“We want this project in every secondary school in our country, at every level.

We want real change in education, and we are sure that this Danio can give it to us.

We’ll talk to you soon about the details.”

Danio is about to enter Hungary through the front door, and I think it’s a wonderful adventure.

“But what exactly is this project that has conquered Hungary? Can I do it too?” you may be wondering.

El otro día te comenté que conocí casualmente a un reputado médico hungaro a cargo de un gigantesco programa para llevar la ciencia a la escuela.

Le enseñé mi laboratorio, mis danios, mis danioscopios, la cara de l@s niñ@s al hacer el proyecto de Danio, los posters científicos que son capaces de hacer a la tierna edad de 8 años tras el proyecto...

Y pasó lo que tenía que pasar. Aquel húngaro empeñado en que los chavales de su país aprendan ciencia de verdad, cayó enamorado de Danio.

Qué quieres te lo he dicho muchas veces. Es inevitable.

Pues entonces me invitó a Hungría a presentar a Danio por allí.

Y allá que me fuí, con mis danioscopios en la mochila y el mismo taller que he hecho tantas veces aquí.

Volví el miércoles con una sonrisa en la cara que aún me dura.

Hicimos dos talleres. Niños de 17 años voluntarios. A final de curso. Con los exámenes ahí.

Pues sí. Les dicen que van a hacer en la universidad un taller de ciencia muy guay y se apuntan sin pensarlo.

Mi imagen sesgadísima de Hungría era de gente fría y seria y me he encontrado todo lo contrario. Personas apasionadas, decididas, brillantes, familiares, con muchísimas ganas de aprender...

El taller fue maravilloso, y aquellos es

tudiantes se enamoraron de danio, como pasa siempre.

Y los responsables del proyecto al ver a los Danios y al ver la carita de ilusión de esos estudiantes dijeron sin dudarlo: queremos este proyecto en cada instituto de nuestro país, en todos los niveles.

Queremos un cambio real en la educación y estamos seguros de que este Danio nos lo puede dar.

Once upon a time, there was a little fish called Danio. Danio rerio.

Scientists loved him because they could look right through his transparent eggs.

And this year, Danio can visit your classroom, so that you too can become a scientist and learn many wonderful things.

That is how I began the very first advertisement for Aprende con Danio, nine years ago now.

I don’t know how long you’ve been reading this newsletter, but this is the project that made me leave my civil servant position and step into the unknown world of entrepreneurship, fish, children… and a thousand adventures.

Nine years ago, I saw the faces of a group of children looking at fish eggs, and I said to myself: “Txusita, this is what I want to do when I grow up.”

Yesterday, I saw that I hadn’t been wrong.

I visited Aitor Ikastola, a school in San Sebastián that has been doing the project from the very beginning. A school where Danio is now part of the curriculum — and, I think I can proudly say, almost part of its identity.

Every year since then, the children in 4th and 6th grade have carried out the project in their classrooms.

And from the little seed that Danio planted, they have managed to build an absolutely impressive laboratory.

The Basque Government has supported this commitment to science and provided the funding they needed.

Dorleta and Gurutxe have created a truly wonderful laboratory. With high tables for working with the fish tanks, a room for exhibitions, computers, and even a radio room… My danios even have their own cupboard, with all the materials neatly organised. There is even a special place for the danioscopes.

STEAM has entered every pore of the school. You can breathe it in every corner.

A whole collection of scientific posters about Danio’s adventures was waiting for me, and the four classes — two from 4th grade and two from 6th grade — presented their projects. Afterwards, there was a round of questions, each one more intelligent than the last.

I was moved.

Listening to the children talk about pipettes, danioscopes, ammonia, beating hearts… as if they were talking about something truly familiar, close and loved.

I’ll be telling you more about my dearest project over the next few days and weeks.

Next week, I’m going to Hungary to present it.

Danio still has so much to say.

Érase una vez un pez que se llamaba Danio, Danio rerio.

L@s científic@s lo adoraban porque podían mirar a través de sus huevos transparentes.

Este año, Danio puede visitar tu clase, para que te conviertas en científic@ y tu puedas también aprender muchas cosas.

Así empecé hace 9 años ya la primera publicidad del proyecto Aprende con Danio.

No sé cuanto llevas leyendo esta niusleter, pero este el proyecto que me hizo dejar una plaza de funcionaria y adentrarme en el desconocido mundo del emprendimiento, de los peces, de los niños... y me ha hecho vivir mil aventuras.

Hace 9 años ví la cara de unos niños viendo los huevos de unos peces y me dije, Txusita, esto es lo que quiero hacer de mayor.

Ayer ví que no me había equivocado.

Visité Aitor Ikastola, un colegio de San Sebastián que lleva haciendo el proyecto desde el inicio, en el que Danio ya forma parte de su curriculum, y creo afirmar con orgullo, casi que de su identidad.

Todos los años desde entonces 4º y 6º hacen el proyecto en sus clases.

Con la semillita que plantó Danio, han conseguido levantar todo un laboratorio impresionante.

El gobierno vasco ha apostado por reforzar esta apuesta científica y les ha dado la financiación que necesitaban.

Dorleta y Gurutxe, han creado un laboratorio absolutamente maravilloso. Con mesas altas para trabajar con las peceras, una sala para exposiciones, informática, y hasta una sala de radio... Mis danios tienen hasta su armario con todo el material ordenadito. Hay hasta un lugar para los danioscopios.

El STEAM ha entrado por todas los poros de la escuela, se respira en cada rincón.

Un montón de posters científicos con las aventuras de Danio me esperaban y las 4 clases, dos de 4º y 2 de 6º presentaron sus proyectos y luego hubo una ronda de preguntas, a cual más inteligente.

Me emocioné.

Escuchando a l@s niñ@s hablar de pipetas, danioscopios, amoniaco, corazones latiendo.. como quien habla de algo realmente familiar, cercano y querido.

Te iré hablando de mi proyecto más querido en los próximos día sy las próximas semanas.

La semana que vienen me voy a Hungría a prensentarlo.

A Danio le queda mucho que decir.

In recent weeks, a very hopeful piece of news has appeared in the press for people affected by pancreatic cancer.

The team led by Dr. Mariano Barbacid has discovered a treatment that cures this tumor in mice.

Such excellent news certainly deserves a Danio newsletter—and, without a doubt, one or several reflections on what lies behind this kind of research and what people usually don’t get to see.

So, what exactly have they discovered, and why is this new?

They have combined a therapy using three different drugs. Together, these drugs prevent the tumors from progressing. This educational newsletter is not the place to go into the details of these complex molecular pathways, but if you want to dive deeper, you can read their article published in the journal PNAS.

This team of outstanding researchers has spent decades deepening our understanding of this tumor and what lies behind it, at a very small and highly complex level.

They have studied the molecular pathways that allow tumors to grow and thrive. Once those pathways were understood, they used specific molecules (drugs) to block the mechanisms that drive tumor progression. In this particular case, the new approach targets three different molecular pathways at once. And that effectively starves the tumors in mice.

The transition to human treatment will still take time, because one of these drugs is not yet available for clinical use, and many additional studies are still needed. But without a doubt, this is an important breakthrough and opens a path of hope for a devastating disease.

To reach these results, they used the same little animal I worked with for more than 20 years: the mouse. To understand such complex mechanisms—and later attack them with drugs—researchers create genetically modified animals that allow them to uncover these biological processes.

Behind this kind of research, there are many, many people doing excellent—and often invisible—work. Some take care of the mice. Others design the experiments. Others carry them out. Others make sure the research institute functions properly. Others manage the funding.

And now I have realized something else that is extremely important, and something I feel particularly proud of.

This research has been funded by many different sources.

These are complex, extremely expensive investigations that, as you can see, involve thousands of people.

Among the funders is the Carmen Delgado / Miguel Pérez Mateo grant from the Pancreatic Cancer Association. Take a look.

Those are the grants made possible by the “Race of the Cities Against Pancreatic Cancer,” which I have watched being born in a small town in Alicante, thanks to a brilliant idea by my husband, Dr. Enrique de Madaria.

For more than ten years, I have watched people run with the hope that their effort and their donations would one day lead to real, tangible results that improve the lives of patients.

With this advance by Dr. Mariano Barbacid’s team, we are a little closer to that day.

And it is deeply moving to see that, among the contributions of so many thousands of people, are also those of the thousands of runners who, year after year, pound the asphalt with hope for a cure.

Human beings are capable of doing great things together when we truly set our minds to it.

Estas últimas semanas ha saltado a la prensa una noticia muy esperanzadora para los enfermos del cáncer de páncreas.

El equipo del Dr. Maríano Barbacid ha descubierto un tratamiento que cura este tumor en ratones.

Tan excelente noticia se merece una newsletter de Danio, sin duda. Y una o varias reflexiones sobre que hay detrás de estas investigaciones y que la gente suele desconocer.

¿Qué han descubierto exactamente y por qué esto es nuevo?

Pues han mezclado una terapia con tres fármacos. Con ellos le quitan a los tumores la posibilidad de progresar. No es objeto de esta niusleter divulgativa meterse en los detalles de estas rutas moleculares complejas, pero si quieres profundizar puedes leer su artículo en la revista PNAS.

Este equipo de excelentes investigadores llevan décadas profundizando en el conocimiento de este tumor y de lo que hay detrás de él, a un nivel muy pequeñito y complejo.

Se han metido en las rutas moleculares que hacen que los tumores prosperen. Una vez las han entendido han usado moléculas (fármacos) que impidan su mecanismo de progresión. En concreto esta nueva aproximación usa tres dianas diferentes. Y eso ahoga a los tumores en los ratones.

El paso al humano ahora llevará un tiempo porque una de estos fármacos no está disponible aún para su uso clínicio, y además se tienen que hacer muchas investigaciones posteriores. Pero sin duda es un avance importante y abre una vía de esperanza para una enfermedad terrible.

Para llegar a estos resultados han usado el animalillo con el que trabajé más de 20 años: el ratón. Para entender esos mecanismos complejos que luego atacan con fármacos, lo que se hace es generar animales a los que se les modifican sus genes para dar con estos mecanismos.

Detrás de esas investigaciones hay mucha, pero que mucha gente que hace un trabajo muy bueno y la mayoría de veces invisible. Unos cuidan a los ratones, otros diseñan los experimentos, otros los hacen, otros de que en el instituto de investigación todo funcione bien, otros se encargan de manejar los dineros...

Y ahora me he dado cuenta de otra cosa importantísima y de la que me siento particularmente muy orgullosa.

Esta investigación cuenta con financiación procedente de muchos sitios.

Son investigaciones complejas, carísimas y que como ves implican a miles de personas.

Entre esos financiadores, se encuentran la Carmen Delgado/Miguel Perez Mateo of the Asociación Cancer de Pancreas. Mira:

Bueno, pues esas son las becas que se crean con la Carrera de las ciudades contra el Cancer de Pancreas, que he visto nacer en un pequeño pueblito de Alicante, gracias a una idea genial de mi marido, el Dr. Enrique de Madaria.

Durante más de 10 años he visto como la gente corría con la esperanza de que su esfuerzo y su aportación llegara algún día a generar resultados factibles y reales para mejorar la vida de los enfermos.

Con este avance del equipo del Dr. Mariano Barbacid estamos un poco más cerca de ese día.

Y es emocionante ver que en ese aporte de tantos miles de personas también están los de esos miles de corredores que año tras año pisan con fuerza el asfalto con la esperanza de una cura.

El ser humano es capaz de hacer grandes cosas juntos cuando se lo propone.

Dear friend, now you’ve really nailed it. You moved me to tears, because The Little Prince is one of my favorite books. That drawing is simply wonderful. Aprende con Danio has shifted into another dimension… it’s no longer just for children, it’s for the scientific child we once were and never got to be, the one who never had a microscope. Perfect.

And she wasn’t the only one.

My friend Irene went completely wild looking through the microscope in Villapez, repeating over and over how she wished she’d had one when she was a child.

My husband “stole” the microscope because he wanted to go back to looking at pond creatures, just like he did when he was little.

My friend Ana —another Ana— decided to keep the microscope permanently within reach, so they could put anything they found under it. She and her son. Well… mostly her 😉.

My Club Danio members tell me they’ve had an absolute blast observing onion cells and everything else they’ve discovered around them.

And every time I present Aprende con Danio as a project “for children,” adults tell me the same thing:

No wonder kids are blown away… I’m blown away too.

My friend Rosario, for example, joined the Jane Goodall drawing contest because she’s fascinated by her and the Netflix documentary inspired her deeply. Just look at the beauty she created…

And then it clicked.

I think the Universe is sending me some very clear signals.

Everyone I’ve mentioned is over 40.

All of them feel that pull to be amazed again by discovering tiny things —almost invisible things— that have always been there, right beside us.

When we have young children, we find the perfect excuse to allow ourselves those moments of exploration, play, and pleasure.

But those children grow up.

You grew up.

And many of the things that once thrilled us, that made us so happy, somehow got left behind.

And yet… they’re still calling you.

Curiosity doesn’t disappear with age.

It hides.

And sometimes all it takes is a microscope, a drop of water, or a drawing for it to come back out.

Maybe growing up wasn’t about stopping playing.

Maybe growing up was about learning how to return.

In this email, I’m not trying to sell you anything.

I want you to write to me.

What experience would you love to recover now, with the eyes and the calm of an adult?

A raíz del correo del domingo pasado, mi amiga Ana me escribió esto:

Querida amiga, ahora sí que lo has clavado. Me he emocionado y todo, porque El Principito es uno de mis libros favoritos. Ese dibujo es simplemente genial. Aprende con Danio ha pasado a otra dimensión… ya no es solo para niños, es para el niño científico que fuimos y que nunca tuvo un microscopio. Perfecto.

Y no fue la única.

Mi amiga Irene se volvió loca mirando por el microscopio en Villapez y no paraba de repetir que ojalá hubiera tenido uno cuando era niña.

Mi marido me quiere “robar” el microscopio, porque quería volver a ver bichitos de charco como hacía cuando era pequeño.

Mi amiga Ana —otra Ana— decidió dejar el microscopio siempre a mano, para poner cualquier cosa que encontraran por ahí. Ella y su hijo. Bueno… sobre todo ella 😉.

Mis clientas del Club Danio me cuentan que se lo han pasado pipa observando las células de la cebolla y todo lo que han ido descubriendo a su alrededor.

Y cada vez que presento Aprende con Danio como un proyecto “para niños”, los adultos me dicen lo mismo:

No me extraña que los niños flipen… yo estoy flipando también.

Mi amiga Rosario, por ejemplo, se ha apuntado al concurso de dibujos de Jane Goodall porque le fascina el personaje y el documental de Netflix la inspiró muchísimo. Mira qué preciosidad hizo…

Y entonces me di cuenta.

Creo que el Universo me está mandando señales bastante claras.

Todas las personas que he mencionado pasan de los 40.

Todas sienten ese deseo de volver a alucinar descubriendo cosas diminutas, invisibles casi, pero que siempre han estado ahí, a su lado.

Cuando tenemos hijos pequeños, encontramos la excusa perfecta para permitirnos esos momentos de exploración, de juego, de placer.

Pero esos niños crecen.

Tú creciste.

Y muchas de esas cosas que tanto nos emocionaban, que nos hacían tan felices, por algún motivo se quedaron aparcadas.

Y sin embargo… siguen llamándote.

La curiosidad no se pierde con la edad.

Se esconde.

Y a veces basta con un microscopio, una gota de agua o un dibujo para que vuelva a salir.

Tal vez crecer no era dejar de jugar.

Tal vez crecer era aprender a volver.

En este email no quiero venderte nada.

Today I want to share a very personal reflection with you.

You see, when I started the Aprende con Danio project, I enjoyed it immensely with my daughter María.

We shared such beautiful moments: observing eggs, looking for little creatures in fields and ponds to see them through the danioscope, making viruses out of modeling clay…

She was my muse. I had the best time. And it sparked in her a deep love for science and animals—and I’m sure it also created thousands of memories that will stay with her forever.

But María is now 16 years old. We still enjoy doing things together, but like any good teenager, she’s claiming her independence.

And you know what?

I enjoyed sharing all of that with María, yes—but above all, I enjoyed letting my inner child come out and play.

I love watching my fish, zoning out while an artemia swims around, or seeing the very first cells of a living being divide.

I see it as a miracle.

So this year I’ve decided to have as much fun as possible with Aprende con Danio.

I started by redesigning my aquariums. They turned out beautiful. I cleaned them thoroughly, added lovely plants…

I’ve invited friends over to see my eggs—and all the life that lives in aquarium “poop” (yes, you read that right: inside an aquarium filter you can find millions of living beings that are pure joy for any good microscopist).

I’ve also bought colorful shrimp and I’m going to breed them.

I’ll make phtos and videos—because I absolutely love doing that.

I’m bringing my inner child out, and together we’re going to have a great time.

If you’ve always been fascinated by life, you don’t need to have small children—or “borrow the neighbor’s kid”—to join the Danio Club.

People have told me so many times:

“Txus, this is for kids… but I love it.”

The other day, Irene looked through the microscope and said, completely amazed:

“I wish I had seen this when I was little.”

“Ire,” I told her, “it’s never too late. Here it is. You can play with it as much as you want.”

And I’m telling you the same.

Hoy voy a compartir contigo una reflexión muy personal.

Verás, cuando empezaba el proyecto de Aprende con Danio, disfruté un montón con mi hija María.

Compartíamos momentos muy chulos, observando los huevos, buscando bichitos del campo y de las charcas para ver por el danioscopio, haciendo virus de plastilina...

Era mi musa. Me lo pasé genial. Y a ella le creo un amor incondicional por la ciencia y los animales y estoy segura de que miles de recuerdos que quedarán ahí para siempre.

Pero María ya tiene 16 años. Seguimos disfrutando de hacer cosas juntas pero, como buena adolescente reclama su independencia.

¿Y sabes qué? que yo disfrutaba de compartir con María de todas esas cosas, pero sobre todo, disfrutaba porque sacaba a pasear mi niña interior.

Me encanta mirar mis peces, quedarme boba viendo como se mueve una artemia, o como se dividen las primeras células de un ser vivo.

Lo veo un milagro.

Así que este año me he propuesto divertirme con Aprende con Danio todo lo que pueda.

He empezado reformando mis acuarios. Me han quedado preciosos. Los he limpiado bien, les he puesto unas preciosas plantas, ...

He invitado a mis amigos a que vean mis huevos, y toda la vida que tiene la caca de un acuario (si, si, lees bien. En el filtro del acuario puedes encontrar millones de seres vivos que harán las delicias de un buen microscopista)

Tambien me he comprado gambas de colores y las voy a criar.

Haré vídeos, que me divierte un montón.

Voy a sacar a mi niña interior y juntas vamos a disfrutar mucho.

Si siempre te fascinó la vida. No hace falta que tengas niños pequeños, ni que “alquiles” al hijo del vecino para apuntarte al Club Danio.

Me han dicho mil veces, Txus, esto le gustará a los niños, pero a mí me encanta.

Irene, el otro día en el microscopio me dijo maravillada. Ojalá hubiera visto yo esto de pequeña.

Ire, le contesté. Nunca es tarde. Aqui lo tienes, puedes jugar con él todo lo que quieras.

Y lo mismo te digo a tí. En el Club Danio tienes todos los materiales para pasártelo igual de bien que yo: hacer tu microscopio, montar un acuario, sacar los huevos de los peces, observarlos y ver que pasa, criar pequeños dragones acuáticos que se moverán sin parar en la pantalla de tu móvil, ...

Todo eso lo podrás ver en mis vídeos y las imágenes que yo te muestre. Te maravillarás.

Pero te digo una cosa. Es mucho más divertido verlo en directo.

Porque el Club Danio, no es solo para niñ@S.

El otro día vi en Netflix, un reportaje de Jane Goodall. Es una entrevista póstuma. Se entrevista a científicos famosos. La única persona que sabe lo que se dice es el entrevistador, las cámaras están automatizadas.

Incluso al final del reportaje el entrevistador se va y deja sola al entrevistado dando su último mensaje al mundo.

Esa entrevista se guarda celosamente y solo se emite cuando la persona fallece.

Jane murió el 1 de octubre de este año, así que ya puedes ver el reportaje en Netflix.

Mi hija María (mi musa, con la que empecé Aprende con Danio), y yo lo vimos y no podíamos parar de llorar.

Nos impactó tanto la entrevista que comprendimos que teníamos que contar la historia de Jane al mundo a nuestra manera.

Y ahí entras tú, queridísim@ suscriptor@.

María y yo vamos a retomar nuestro canal de Youtube con un vídeo de Jane Goodal cuando era niña. Luego seguramente haremos otro de lo que nos enseño sobre los gorilas. Y vamos a hacer un cuento con esta historia también.

The other day I watched a documentary about Jane Goodall on Netflix.
It’s a posthumous interview. Famous scientists are interviewed, but only the interviewer knows what is being said; the cameras are automated.

At the end of the documentary, the interviewer leaves and the interviewee is left alone, delivering their final message to the world.

That interview is kept under lock and key and is only released once the person has passed away.

Jane died on October 1st of this year, so you can now watch the documentary on Netflix.

My daughter María (my muse, the one with whom I started Aprende con Danio) and I watched it together, and we couldn’t stop crying.

The interview moved us so deeply that we understood we had to tell Jane’s story to the world, in our own way.

And this is where you come in, dear subscriber.

María and I are going to revive our YouTube channel with a video about Jane Goodall as a child. Then we’ll probably make another one about what she taught us about gorillas. And we’re also going to create a storybook based on her life.

What I’m asking from you to help us is this: watch the Netflix documentary with your children, nieces, nephews… whoever you like.

Ask them to make a drawing inspired by it: Jane as a child, Jane with gorillas, with worms or chickens (which she talks about in the documentary), just the gorillas… I don’t know, whatever inspires them.

Last night I was having dinner with some friends and I told them the story you’re about to read.

Funny enough, during the Secret Santa we did afterwards, I ended up with a paperweight with two dolphins on it.

And that’s when I realized I still hadn’t told this incredible story in my Aprende con Danio newsletter. And since I’m becoming more and more woo-woo by the day, I took it as a clear sign.

Here’s how it all happened.

This September, I went to the Strait of Gibraltar to watch bird migrations on a wonderful trip organized by SEO (the Spanish Ornithological Society).

We also took a boat trip for whale and dolphin watching with a company called Turmares. If you ever go to Tarifa, you have to do this. Mandatory. Write it down.

So there we were, when small Moroccan fishing boats started appearing, fishing for tuna the best way they could. They’d throw in a lure, tire the tuna out by pulling a very thin line up and down, and once the tuna was completely exhausted, they’d haul it up.

We’re talking about a beast that can weigh around 300 kilos.

And then… a whole group of orcas showed up. The same ones you’ve probably seen on the news lately for attacking sailboats.

Next to me was a crew member who had once been a tuna fisherman himself, and who had gone through the same thing as those struggling fishermen. Once, an orca stole a tuna from him and took three bites out of it. He vividly remembered cursing the orca’s entire family, because the price of his tuna dropped from 1,000 to 300 pesetas per kilo.

That fascinating man kept telling me what was about to happen.

“Look, that’s Lamari’s family, the grandmother orca. There are nine of them.”

“And now they’re checking whether they’re going to steal the tuna from the fishermen.”

And I asked, amazed, “Wow… and what do they do with a tuna like that? How do they eat such a massive animal?”

“Well,” he said, “one takes a bite, and then they pass it along to the others.”

I was staring at the sea just below the boat, thinking:

An orca is going to pop up right here. You’ll see.

And suddenly—not one, but two orcas appeared. Right in front of my face. And you could clearly see one orca handing a piece of tuna to the other.

I even managed to capture it in a photo. The best photo I’ve ever taken in my life.

My screams of excitement—and everyone else’s—could probably be heard all the way from Morocco.

You can imagine.

Ayer estaba cenando con unos amigos y les conté esta historia que vas a leer.

Curiosamente en el amigo invisible que hicimos a continuación me tocó un pisapapeles con dos delfines.

Y me acordé que aún no había contado esta increíble historia en mi newsletter de Aprende con Danio. Como cada vez estoy más magufa, lo ví claramente una señal.

Verás, todo pasó este septiembre.

Fui al Estrecho de Gibraltar a ver las migraciones de las aves en un viaje chulísimo que organiza la SEO ( la Sociedad Española de Ornitología)

Y cogimos un barco para avistamiento de cetáceos de la empresa Turmares (Tienes que hacer esta actividad si vienes a Tarifa. Obligatorio. Apuntatelo)

Bueno pues empezaron a aparecer barquitas de pescadores marroquies pescando atún como buenamente podían. Les tiraban un cebo, cansaban al atún cuando picaba subiendo y bajando un hilo diminuto. Cuando el atún acababa reventaico lo podían subir. Estamos hablando de un bicharraco de 300 kg.

Y en eso que aparecen un montón de orcas. Esas que han salido por la tele por atacar veleros.

A mi lado tenía un miembro de la tripulación que otrora fue pescador de atunes y se las había visto en las mismas que los sufridos pescadores. Una vez una orca le robó un atún y le pegó 3 bocados. Se acordó de la madre que trajo a la orca porque le bajaron el precio del kilo del atún de 1000 a 300 pesetas.

Bueno, pues aquel interesante señor me iba diciendo lo que iba a pasar.

-Mira, esta es la familia de Lamari, una orca abuela. Son 9 orcas.

-Y ahora están viendo si le roban el atún a los pescadores.

Ostras, y que hace la orca con el atún? ¿Cómo se come tremendo bicharraco? pregunté.

-Pues una pega un bocao y se la van pasando de unas a otras.

Yo estaba mirando al mar justo debajo del barco y pensando.

Ahora va a aparecer aquí justo una orca, ya verás.

Y en eso que aparacen no una, sino dos, y delante de mis morros se ve perfectamente como una orca le da a la otra un cacho de atún.

Encima lo capto en una foto, la mejor que he hecho en mi vida.

Mis chillidos de emoción y los de todos los que estabamos viendo esa locura se oían desde Marruecos.

Te puedes imaginar.

The other day I was delighted to receive this email from a new subscriber who had just discovered my work:

I am an 8th grade science teacher in the foothills of North Carolina, United States. I too love nature, and I am part of the Trout in the Classroom program. We have a 50 gallon aquarium that is chilled to 54 degrees. Every fall, we get trout eggs and watch them develop and hatch into little fish. Then we take them to the creek in the spring as fingerlings and release them. The eggs are translucent and students can see the eyes and the beating heart when I use the dissecting microscope. I just take a fish egg out, put it in a petri dish with some water and look very quickly. Then we replace the egg in the aquarium before it is harmed. We usually start with about 50 eggs. We can finish with some number of 2-10 fish. That is better odds than nature, which has a survival rate of about 1 in 100 on average for rainbow trout. We learn so much from them! A few things we learn are:

water quality monitoring

stewardship

data collection and analysis

a love for nature

Isn’t it beautiful, this magic of the internet that allows people with the same passions to connect?

I was so moved to see that this idea — that fish can open a window to understanding nature, life, and science (which is really everything!) and can simply make us better people — has occurred to others in different corners of the world.

That in North Carolina there are children who gasp in wonder as they see the beating heart inside a trout egg…

And that in Donostia, Bilbao, Valencia, Murcia, Madrid, Seville, Zaragoza… and in so many schools across Spain, children have done the same when watching the heart of a Danio rerio beat.

Doesn’t that give you a sense of unity? Doesn’t it make you feel that we’re all in this together?

It certainly does for me. I love realizing that I’m not crazy (or maybe I am — but at least I’m not the only one!).

There are at least six videos where I explain what’s happening inside a fish egg that you can observe with a simple magnifying lens — and I even show you how to make one yourself.

There’s also a complete project on how to build an aquarium and study ecosystems with it — how to create a viable aquarium, what to measure to care for it, how balance is maintained, how to explore all the macro and microscopic life it contains, and how to use those lessons to take care of our environment.

You really could spend an entire school year studying an aquarium!

El otro día recibí con alegría este correo de una suscriptora que me acababa de descubrir:

Soy profesora de ciencias de 8.º grado en las estribaciones de Carolina del Norte, Estados Unidos.
También me encanta la naturaleza y participo en el programa “Trucha en el Aula”.
Tenemos un acuario de 50 galones que se mantiene refrigerado a 54 grados Fahrenheit.
Cada otoño recibimos huevos de trucha y observamos cómo se desarrollan y eclosionan hasta convertirse en pequeños peces.
Luego, en primavera, los llevamos al arroyo cuando ya son alevines y los liberamos.

Los huevos son translúcidos y los estudiantes pueden ver los ojos y el corazón latiendo cuando utilizo el microscopio estereoscópico.
Simplemente saco un huevo, lo coloco en una placa de Petri con un poco de agua y lo observamos rápidamente.
Después lo devolvemos al acuario antes de que sufra ningún daño.

Normalmente empezamos con unos 50 huevos y terminamos con entre 2 y 10 peces, lo cual es una mejor proporción que en la naturaleza, donde la tasa de supervivencia media de la trucha arcoíris es de aproximadamente 1 entre 100.

¡Aprendemos muchísimo con ellos! Algunas de las cosas que aprendemos son:

control de la calidad del agua

responsabilidad ambiental

recogida y análisis de datos

amor por la naturaleza

Que bonita es la magia esta de internet de poner en contacto gente con las mismas inquietudes ¿verdad?

Me ha emocionado ver que todo esto de que los peces te pueden abrir una ventana para entender la naturaleza, la vida, la ciencia que es en realidad todo y como pueden simplemente hacernos mejores, se le ha ocurrido a otras personas en otros puntos del planeta.

Que en Carolina del Norte haya un@s niñ@s que suspiren cuando ven el corazón de un huevito de trucha.

Que en Donostia, Bilbao, Valencia, Murcia, Madrid, Sevilla, Zaragoza... y tantos colegios de España hayan hecho lo mismo cuando han visto el corazon de Danio Rerio latir.

¿No te da idea de unidad? ¿No te inspira que estamos juntos en esto?

A mi desde luego sí. Me encanta ver que no estoy loca (o sí, pero no soy la única)

En el Club Danio

tengo muchos recursos (vídeos, protocolos, proyectos, cuadernos de ejercicios...) que te ayudarán a implementar algo así en tu clase o en tu casa.

Hay al menos 6 vídeos donde explico que está pasando en ese huevito de pez que puedes mirar con una lupa muy sencilla.

Incluso te explico cómo hacerla tu misma.

Y luego tengo un proyecto completo de cómo puedes hacer un acuario y estudiar los ecosistemas con él.

Como construir un acuario viable, qué medir para cuidarlo, como se genera el equilibrio, como explorar toda la vida qeu en el se genera (macro y microscópica) como usar esas enseñanzas para cuidar nuestor medio ambiente... Realmente tienes material para estudiar todo el curso un acuario.

Como ya ha descubierto esta maravillosa profesora de Carolina del Norte.

As strange as it sounds, green mice do exist.
Not only have I seen them — I worked with them for years during my time as a scientist.

In the animal lab I ran, we had all kinds of green mice:
completely green ones, some with only green ears, others with green livers, green neurons… even mice where only a single molecule glowed green.

And I’ll tell you something even more incredible: those mice weren’t just mice.

They were a mix of mouse and jellyfish.

Yes, you read that right. Something inside them once belonged to a jellyfish.

Let me tell you how that’s even possible.

There are jellyfish that glow bright green deep in the ocean.

I’m not entirely sure if that glow helps them attract prey, scare off predators, or something else —

but it must have some evolutionary advantage.

Anyway, that glow gave scientists a brilliant idea.

What makes jellyfish shine is a protein called GFP (Green Fluorescent Protein).

With genetic engineering, you can isolate the gene for GFP — that tiny fragment of DNA that contains the instructions for making this glowing protein — and here’s the mind-blowing part: you can insert those instructions into another living being.

Science has its own special scissors and glue for these things (called restriction enzymes, for the curious).
So, in the lab, you can literally cut out the jellyfish gene, paste it into a mouse’s genome and… voilà!

You’ve got yourself a green mouse.

You can make the entire mouse glow green, or just one neuron, or even a single molecule, depending on where you “paste” the gene.
This way, scientists can light up where specific genes are expressed — places they’d never be able to see otherwise —
just like jellyfish glowing in the dark depths of the sea.

And what about green fish?

Well, yes — they exist too.

In Europe, they can only be used for research,

but in the U.S. there’s a popular aquarium pet called the GloFish, genetically modified with fluorescent genes in bright colors and sold to the public.

Personally, I’m not a fan of that.

Modifying an animal’s genes for scientific purposes — okay, there’s a reason for that.
But doing it just to have a prettier pet?
That crosses an ethical and environmental line for me.

I’d really love to hear what you think about that.

Because animals are already so incredibly fascinating just as they are.
And Danios — my favorite little zebrafish — are extra special. Their transparent eggs let you literally see life forming inside them.

Como lo lees los ratones verdes existen. No solo los he visto, sino que trabajé muchísimo con ellos durante mi etapa de científica.

En el animalario que dirigía teníamos ratones verdes enteritos, ratones verdes solo en las orejas, ratones verdes solo en el hígado, en un determinado tipo de neurona… ¡o incluso en una sola molécula!

Y te diré algo aún más increíble: esos ratones no eran solo ratones.

Eran una mezcla de ratón y medusa.

Sí, sí, como lo oyes. Algo dentro de ellos, en otro tiempo, estuvo dentro de una medusa.

Venga, te cuento cómo es posible eso.

Resulta que hay medusas que brillan de color verde en las profundidades del mar.

No tengo claro si esto les sirve para atraer presas, asustar depredadores o algo distinto, pero alguna ventaja evolutiva deben de tener.

El caso es que a los científicos este brilli-brilli les dio una idea buenísima.

Lo que hace que las medusas brillen es una proteína llamada GFP (Green Fluorescent Protein).

Con la ingeniería genética puedes aislar el gen de la GFP —es decir, el trocito del ADN donde está escrita la receta para fabricar esa proteína— y atención, que aquí viene lo asombroso: meter esas instrucciones en otro ser vivo.

En ciencia existen unas tijeritas y un pegamento especiales para esos menesteres (las famosas enzimas de restricción, para los curiosos). Así, en el laboratorio puedes coger el gen de la medusa, cortarlo y pegarlo en el genoma de un ratón y… ¡voilà! Crear un ratón verde.

Puedes hacer que todo el ratón sea verde, o solo una neurona, o incluso una molécula, dependiendo de dónde “pegues” ese gen. De esta forma, los científicos “iluminan” los lugares donde se expresan ciertos genes, que de otro modo serían imposibles de ver, como si fueran medusas en la oscuridad del océano.

¿Y los peces verdes?

Claro, también. En Europa solo se pueden usar para investigación pero en EEUU hay unos peces, los glowfish que les han metido genes flourescentes de colores y se venden al público en general como animales de acuario.

Yo eso no lo veo, porque modificar los genes para de un animal para uso científico vale, pero ¿para mascota?

Creo que hay límites éticos y medioambientales.

Me encantaría saber tu opinión al respecto.

Además es que los animales son tan tan increíbles ya per sé. Y los Danios, tienen encima esos maravillosos huevos transparentes donde ves como se va formando un ser vivo en el interior! que no puedes más que quedarte maravillado de la vida.

And I’m lucky enough to call him a friend. He’s always there to offer me wise advice when it comes to the artistic side of what I do.

The other day, I asked him if he could recommend a good book designer for my stories.

And he said something like, “Honestly, you’d be better off spending that money on a great illustrator.”

But of course, Heber didn’t know one very important thing.

I already have the best illustrators in the world.

The ones who create the purest, most intuitive drawings — the ones that truly connect with my young audience.

The children.

Y tengo la suerte de que es mi amigo y me aconseja sabiamente sobre las cosas que hago en los mundos artísticos.

Creo que no puedes enseñar bien si no tienes una actitud contínua de querer aprender.

Ya no por una cuestión de que te quedes atrás. Simplemente porque se te olvida el papel de aprendiz.

A mí que quieres que te diga, es el que más me gusta. La ilusión de descubrir algo nuevo, algo que no sabía, visitar un sitio que nunca había visto, de emocionarse al leer una nueva teoría que te explica cosas que siempre te pasaron pero que no sabías el porqué...

Esa sorpresa me parece uno de los mayores placereres de la vida. L@s niñ@s son los que mejor lo hacen, porque lo llevan de fábrica.

Yo quiero tener siempre delante algo nuevo por descubir, por aprender, un lugar del mundo que explorar.. no quiero que se acabe nunca.

Este verano estuve en el lago de Sanabria. Mi intención era ir también al camino de Santiago pero no pudo ser, ahora verás porqué.

Cerca del lago de Sanabria hay un centro del Lobo: Centro del Lobo Ibérico "Féliz Rodríguez de la Fuente"

Como en todas los viajes que hago siempre me gusta ver algo de animales, así que allá que fuimos.

Es un centro educacional maravilloso donde puedes aprender mucho sobre este increíble animal. Tienen varias manadas de lobos en semilibertad. Aprendí mucho sobre ellos en la magnifica presentación que te hacen.

La procedencia de los lobos es diversa: otros centros similares, irrecuperables de centros de recuperación de fauna silvestre...

Pero me llamó mucho la atención la historia de Brasa.

Brasa era una loba que andaba raro.

Consiguió salvarse de un incendio forestal, pero sus almohadillas plantares quedaron dañadas de por vida. La recogieron en un centro de recuperación, la curaron y la enviaron al centro del Lobo. Me dio mucha pena cuando escuché la historia y pensé en los miles de animales víctimas de los incendios de esos días (en España este año hemos tenido una oleada terrible de incendios forestales)

Pero no sé quedó en un pensamiento. Lo sentí mucho más cercano.

Cuando íbamos a iniciar la segunda parte del viaje hacia el camino de Santiago, nos metimos en una autovía que estaban abriendo y cerrando por la cercanía del fuego. Como no estaba cerrada al tráfico, pensamos que podríamos entrar sin problemas.

Pero no. Enseguida empezamos a ver focos de fuego en el arcén. Incluso alguno en la mediana. Según avanzábamos nos empezamos a meter en una nube de humo cada vez más oscura.

Los niños empezaron a ponerse nervisosos y nosotros también. Hacía bastante viento y nos dimos cuenta que eso no estaba en absoluto controlado y nos estábamos metiendo en la boca del lobo. Así que dimos la vuelta.

Poco después volvieron a cortar la autovía.

No fuimos al camino de Santiago. Perdimos todas las reservas, la ilusión, y un montón de dinero, pero salvamos la vida.

Otros, lamentablemente no tuvieron tanta suerte. Creo que ha habido 8 personas fallecidas e imagina la cantidad de animales y naturaleza aniquilada.

Así que este verano he estado especialmente sensibilizada con los incendios.

Pensé en Brasa.

Pensé en Danio.

Pensé en que esto no debería volver a pasar.

Y pensé que tengo un montón de recursos docentes para que l@s niñ@s conozcan de verdad como es la naturaleza, la ciencia, los animales, ...

Porque si lo conoces, si entiendes lo realmente maravilloso que es, tienes que cuidarlo. Es inevitable.

Y necesitamos cuidar el mundo. y nuestra esperanza está en los más pequeños.

Así que de cara al inicio del curso escolar reabro el Club Danio.

Una membresía en la que he agrupado todos los recursos docentes realizados durante 8 años acercando la ciencia, los animales y la naturaleza a los más pequeños.

This summer I was at Lake Sanabria. My intention was also to walk the Camino de Santiago, but it wasn’t possible—you’ll soon see why.

Near Lake Sanabria there’s a wolf center: Centro del Lobo Ibérico “Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente.”

As in all my trips, I always like to see something related to animals, so off we went.

It’s a wonderful educational center where you can learn a lot about this incredible animal. They have several wolf packs living in semi-freedom. I learned so much about them thanks to the magnificent presentation they give.

The wolves come from different places: other similar centers, or from wildlife recovery centers where they could no longer return to the wild...

But what really caught my attention was the story of Brasa.

Brasa was a wolf that walked strangely.

She managed to survive a forest fire, but the pads of her paws were permanently damaged. She was rescued in a recovery center, healed, and then sent to the Wolf Center. Her story made me so sad, and I thought about the thousands of animals that became victims of those fires (in Spain this year we had a terrible wave of wildfires).

But it wasn’t just a passing thought. I felt it much closer.

When we were about to start the second part of the trip, heading to the Camino de Santiago, we drove into a highway that they were opening and closing depending on the fire nearby. Since it wasn’t closed at that moment, we thought we’d be fine.

But no. Soon we began to see flames on the roadside. Even some in the median. As we kept going, we drove straight into a darker and darker cloud of smoke.

The kids started to get nervous, and so did we. It was windy, and we realized that nothing was under control—that we were literally heading into the wolf’s mouth. So we turned back.

Shortly after, they closed the highway again.

We didn’t make it to the Camino de Santiago. We lost all our bookings, our excitement, and quite a bit of money… but we saved our lives.

Others, unfortunately, weren’t so lucky. I think 8 people died. And just imagine the number of animals and nature wiped out.

So this summer I’ve been especially sensitive to wildfires.

I thought about Brasa.

I thought about Danio.

I thought about how this should never happen again.

And I thought about the huge amount of educational resources I’ve created so that children can truly get to know nature, science, and animals.

Because if you know it, if you really understand how wonderful it is, you can’t help but take care of it. It’s inevitable.

And we need to take care of our world. Our hope lies in the little ones.

That’s why, with the new school year coming, I’m reopening the Danio Club.

It’s a membership where I’ve gathered all the teaching resources I’ve created over 8 years, bringing science, animals, and nature closer to kids.

It’s an immense source of material that will help you teach your classes or educate your children.

El año pasado fui a Vietnam.

Y en un barecillo local sito en lugar perdido entre arrozales, me encontré a esta señora y a su hijo.

Nos sirvieron unos cocos con pajita para mitigar el calor muerte que hacía, y saqué el recurso de veterinaria científica con el que siempre viajo: mi microscopio.

No te creas que me ocupaba media mochila, no, tengo una versión adaptada a viajes y aventurillas varias para que no te ocupe mucho y te lo puedas llevar de vacaciones.

El caso es que fue todo un éxito. Mira la cara de voy-a-morir-de-la-emoción que ponían la señora y su hijito al mirar sus huellas dactilares.

Así que obviamente se lo regalé y allí quedaron la señora y su nene felices mirando sus huellas, las plumas de sus gallinas, las hojas de sus árboles, el coco con pajita y todo lo que se les ocurría "de otra manera".

Me gusta imaginar que aún lo usan y que se acuerdan de una veterinaria loca que un día pasó por allí a beber de un coco con pajita y a enseñarles un poquito de ciencia.

Last year I went to Vietnam.

And in a tiny local bar, tucked away in a rice field somewhere off the map, I met this lovely lady and her son.

They served us coconuts with straws to survive the deadly heat, and I pulled out my trusty scientific-vet travel tool: my microscope.

Don’t worry — it didn’t take up half my backpack. I have a special version, perfectly adapted for travel and little adventures, so it barely takes up space and you can take it on vacation.

And let me tell you — it was a total hit. Just look at the I’m-going-to-die-of-excitement faces they made while looking at their fingerprints.

Of course, I gave it to them. And there they stayed, mom and son, happy as could be, looking at their fingerprints, their chicken feathers, the leaves from their trees, the coconut straw… everything they could find — but now seeing it all "in a whole new way."

I like to imagine they still use it. And that they still remember the quirky vet lady who once showed up to drink coconut water with a straw and drop off a little science magic.

Mi hija mayor se llama Angela. Cumple en unos días 22 años. Dios mío cómo pasa el tiempo.

Es la que se inventó eso de veterinaria científica cuando era pequeñita. Sus amigos le preguntaban a que se dedica tu madre y ella decía, es veterinaria científica para distinguirme de los veterinarios de perros y gatos. Supongo que las dos grandes clasificaciones veterinarios que había en su cabeza.

Me gustó tanto y lo ví tan mono que me quedé con ese nombre, Txus veterinaria científica.

Y es que siempre ha sido muy creativa, sabes?

Desde pequeñita. Sus dibujos eran preciosos y tenía mi despacho lleno de ellos.

Pero un día me dio un disgusto. Me dijo mamá, dejo de estudiar y me voy a dedicar a tatuar. Casi me da un infarto. Nosotros, tan científicos, tan académicos, tan de la "vía correcta"...

Tenía 17 años y es tan cabezota como su madre así que poco pude hacer.

Pero no tardé en darme cuenta de lo equivocada que estaba. Mi hija en un año se había formado, había invertido todo lo que ganaba en hacerse un equipamiento propio, nunca me pidió ni un duro.

Con 17 años se había convertido en una emprendedora en toda regla y había encontrado su camino, dándome un lección que nunca olvidaré. Luego ha seguido formándose, indagando, experimentando, desarrollándose.

El otro día me volvió a dejar sin palabras. Con 22 añitos fue a la convención nacional de tatuajes y se gano dos primeros premios. Mira:

Que orgullosa estoy de tí, Angela.

Me has impresionado.

Y espero que esas tardes pintando con mamá, de alguna manera te ayudaran a despertar esa gran artista en la que te has convertido.

My oldest daughter is named Angela. She’ll be turning 22 in just a few days. My goodness, how time flies.

She was actually the one who came up with the name scientific veterinarian when she was a little girl.
Her friends would ask, "What does your mom do?" and she would say, "She’s a scientific veterinarian," to distinguish me from dog-and-cat vets.
I guess, in her mind, there were only two kinds of veterinarians back then.

I loved it so much — it sounded so sweet — that I kept the name: Txus, scientific veterinarian.

And she’s always been creative, you know?

Since she was little.
Her drawings were beautiful, and my office was filled with them.

But one day she gave me quite a scare.
She said, “Mom, I’m quitting school. I want to become a tattoo artist.”

I nearly had a heart attack.
We were always so scientific, so academic, always following "the proper path"...

She was 17, and just as stubborn as her mother — so there wasn’t much I could do.

But it didn’t take long for me to realize how wrong I had been.

In just one year, my daughter trained herself, invested everything she earned into buying her own equipment, and never asked me for a single euro.

At 17, she had become a full-fledged entrepreneur. She had found her own path — and taught me a lesson I’ll never forget.

Since then, she’s continued to study, explore, experiment, and grow.

The other day, she left me speechless once again.
At just 22, she went to the national tattoo convention and won two first-place awards. Look:

How proud I am of you, Angela.

You’ve amazed me.

And I hope that those afternoons spent drawing with Mom, in some way, helped awaken the great artist you’ve become.

Mi animal favorito no es Danio.

A ver, adoro a los Danios, me cambiaron la vida, son animales supermega interesantes.

Pero mi animal favorito, el que me hizo estudiar veterinaria, el que siempre he tenido conmingo desde los 10 años y con el que me moriré, es sin duda

EL PERRO.

Y no puede ser casualidad que la perra de mi suegra India, esté en estado de buena esperanza.

Mira:

Por aquí andamos mi musa Silvia, India, la perra de mi suegra que alberga en su vientre 5 cachorritos y servidora.

Entonces, lo que te venía a contar.

Junio es el mes del perro en el Club DANIO.

Pero India está preñada y sale de cuentas el 15 de julio, justo en mi 50 cincuenta cumpleaños.

Así que reabro los emails de divulgación científica. Este mes y al que viene voy a hablar largo y tendido sobre perros.

Te cuento cómo va esto:

Me pongo a investigar, a leer, a mirar documentales...
y luego intento ir a buscarlo donde viva,
modo Indiana Jones activado (¡sin látigo, pero con muchas ganas!).

Te mando 3 o 4 emails por semana, con historias, curiosidades y mis aventuras persiguiendo bichos.

My favorite animal isn’t the Danio.

Now, don’t get me wrong—I love Danios.
They changed my life. They’re super fascinating little creatures.

But my all-time favorite animal—the one that made me study veterinary medicine,
the one I’ve had by my side since I was ten, and the one I’ll grow old and grey with—is, without a doubt…

THE DOG.

And it can’t be just coincidence that India, my mother-in-law’s dog, is expecting puppies.

Here we are—my muse Silvia, India (the glowing mom-to-be), her five little pups growing inside her, and yours truly.

So here’s what I wanted to tell you:

June is Dog Month in the DANIO Club.

But India’s due date is July 15th—which also happens to be my big five-oh.
So I’m bringing back my science storytelling emails.
This month and next, it’s all about dogs. Lots of dogs.

This month and next, it's my all-time favorite: the dog.

I dive deep—reading, researching, watching documentaries...
And then I try to find the animal in the wild,
Indiana Jones-style (minus the whip, but full of enthusiasm!).

I send you 3–4 emails a week, packed with fun facts, stories, and my wild animal-chasing escapades.

Es curiosa la definición de lujo para las diferentes personas.

Para mí, es un lujo indescriptible tener que frenar el coche porque una yegua semisalvaje se cruza en medio de la carretera con su potrillo.

La paz que me da eso, la calma para mi mente… El lujo de parar el coche y que todo lo que tenga que hacer sea fijarme en cada paso que dan esos majestuosos animales delante de mí…

Pues este fin de semana fue así. Un lujazo.

Y no me he tenido que ir a ningún país lejano para darme ese lujo. Ha sido muy cerca, en un lugar tan bello como desconocido: la Serranía de Cuenca.

Miles de amapolas a los lados del camino.

Calma,

paz,

naturaleza,

un ciervo que se cruza,

un lagarto ocelado que se esconde,

decenas de buitres sobrevolando tu cabeza con majestuosidad,

miles de pajaritos cantando para darte los buenos días.

La Serranía de Cuenca es el segundo mayor bosque de Europa, solo por detrás de la Selva Negra.

¿Y qué hacía yo por allí?

Pues me fui a ver osos.

Eso de ser veterinaria científica me lo tomo muy en serio, y este mes es el mes del oso en el Club Danio.

En Cuenca hay un lugar donde mi ídolo de la infancia, Rodríguez de la Fuente, filmó a los osos: El Hosquillo.

Así que ni corta ni perezosa, me fui para allá.

El Hosquillo se fundó en los años 60 para repoblar los bosques de especies cinegéticas, ya que habían quedado muy mermadas por las hambrunas de la posguerra.

Hoy en día funciona principalmente como centro educativo y de divulgación.

Se pueden ver osos, ciervos, gamos, muflones, lobos, jabalíes… en condiciones de semilibertad.

La organización es fantástica. Pilar, nuestra guía, nos explicó todo con mucho cariño y dedicación.

En El Hosquillo tienen unos 12 osos.

Aprendí muchísimo sobre ellos, y eso es lo que estoy contando a los miembros del Club Danio.

Todo el mes hablamos de osos y al final escribiré un cuento con las historias que vamos aprendiendo y los dibujos de los niños.

Son cuentos como estos que ya he hecho y que puedes comprar aquí.

Te dejo un ejemplo de algo que me sorprendió mucho:

Los osos de El Hosquillo ya no hibernan. Hace demasiado calor.

Solo hibernan las hembras cuando están preñadas, y además paren durante la hibernación.

La gestación es curiosísima.

El celo y las cubriciones ocurren en primavera, pero el embrión queda detenido.

Entonces, si la hembra ha comido lo suficiente en primavera y verano como para aguantar el embarazo, el embrión se implanta y empieza a desarrollarse en otoño.

Si no, se reabsorbe de forma natural.

Solo gestan 4 meses, y nacen unos mini ositos feísimos de medio kilo.

Pero se quedan ahí, con su mamá, mamando hasta la primavera.

Bueno, pues si te animas a ir a Cuenca, te recomiendo muchísimo la casita rural donde estuvimos: Las Cerrás, en Las Majadas, el pueblo más cercano a El Hosquillo.

Allí las vacas y los caballos se cruzarán con tu coche, y tú tendrás que esperar pacientemente a que pasen.

Luxury means something different to everyone.

For me, it’s pure luxury to have to stop the car because a semi-wild mare is crossing the road with her foal.

The peace that moment brings me… the calm it gives my mind…

Just stopping the car and watching these majestic animals take each step in front of me — that, to me, is priceless.

And that’s exactly how this past weekend felt: a total luxury.

And I didn’t have to travel to some faraway country to enjoy it.

It happened close by, in a place as beautiful as it is unknown: the Serranía de Cuenca.

Poppies blooming along the roadsides.

Stillness.

Peace.

Nature.

A deer crossing the path.

A big green lizard darting into the bushes.

Dozens of vultures gliding right above your head.

Thousands of little birds singing your morning wake-up call.

The Serranía de Cuenca is the second largest forest in Europe — only the Black Forest is bigger.

So… what was I doing there?

Well, I went to see bears.

Being a science-loving vet, I take that role seriously. And this month, at Club Danio, it’s Bear Month.

There’s a place in Cuenca where my childhood hero, Rodríguez de la Fuente, filmed bears:

El Hosquillo.

So I packed my bag and went.

El Hosquillo was founded in the 1960s to help repopulate the forests with wild species after many were lost during the post-war famine.

Today, it works mostly as an education and conservation center.

You can see bears, deer, fallow deer, mouflon, wolves, wild boar — all in semi-wild conditions.

The organization is fantastic. Our guide, Pilar, explained everything with care and passion.

There are about 12 bears living at El Hosquillo.

I learned so much about them — and that’s what I’ve been sharing with the members of Club Danio all month.

At the end of the month, I’ll write a storybook with all the things we’ve learned — and with the children’s drawings!

Let me share one surprising thing I learned:

The bears at El Hosquillo don’t hibernate anymore. It’s too warm.

Only the pregnant females hibernate — and they give birth during hibernation!

Their reproductive cycle is wild:

They mate in spring, but the embryo stays in a sort of pause.

If the mother has eaten enough in spring and summer to sustain the pregnancy, the embryo implants in autumn and starts growing.

If not, the pregnancy is naturally aborted.

They only gestate for about 4 months — and out come these funny little half-kilo cubs, kind of ugly if I’m honest.

But they stay curled up with mama, nursing through the winter until spring.

So if you’re thinking of heading to Cuenca, I highly recommend the rural house we stayed at:

Las Cerrás, in Las Majadas — the closest village to El Hosquillo.

There, cows and horses cross the road, and you just have to wait patiently as they go by.

Ayer fue día de mona.

Cumpliendo con la tradición fuimos con mi muso Javier (el hijo de mi amiga Ana), al Cabo de las Huertas, mi playa favorita de Alicante.

Mi marido se puso a hablar con mi muso e intentó tirar de un truco que hasta hace poco era infalible: hablar de cacas.

De eso controla un montón porque es médico del aparato digestivo. Por eso Javier le conocía como Dr. Cacas

El caso es que Javier muy serio le dijo: mira Quique, ya no me da risa hablar de cacas.

A los 6 años, para Javier, el Dr. Cacas era un héroe. Pero a los 8, se atrevió a hacer esas sorprendentes declaraciones.

Quique, que es rápido y tiene experiencia en niñ@s que crecen (hemos criado 3) contestó inmediatamente:

De acuerdo, pues ahora soy: El Dr. Escorpión.

La boca de Javier se abrió con sorpresa y sus ojillos denotaron una admiración profunda.

Dicho lo cual, corrieron a levantar todas las piedras del Cabo buscando escorpiones (bueno alacranes, que es lo que hay por aquí)

Moraleja de la historia:

A los 8, aún te gustan los animales y eres capaz de admirar a un tipo que se hace llamar Dr. Escorpión.

El Dr. Escorpión tira de magia, pero en realidad no tienen ni idea de escorpiones.

Si tienes hij@s en esa edad y quieres que vivan esas aventuras mágicas (sepas o no de escorpiones u otros animales) mira en este Club.

Yesterday was mona day.

Fulfilling the Spanish tradition we went with my muso Javier (my friend Ana's son), to Cabo de las Huertas, my favorite beach in Alicante.

My husband started talking to my muso and tried to pull a trick that until recently was infallible: talking about poop.

He knows a lot about that because he is a doctor of the digestive system. That's why Javier knew him as Dr. Poops

The thing is that Javier very seriously told him: look Quique, I don't laugh anymore talking about poops.

At 6 years old, for Javier, Dr. Cacas was a hero. But at the age of 8, he dared to make these surprising statements.

Quique, who is quick and experienced with growing children (we have raised 3) answered immediately:

Okay, so now I am: Dr. Scorpion.

Javier's mouth opened in surprise and his little eyes denoted deep admiration.

So, they ran to lift all the stones of the Cape looking for scorpions (well, scorpions, that's what we have around here)

Moral of the story:

At 8, you still like animals and you are able to admire a guy who calls himself Dr. Scorpion.

Dr. Scorpion pulls magic, but they don't really have a clue about scorpions.

When I worked at CSIC (the major Science instition of Spain) I had an office full of drawings of my children. It was the most beautiful office in the whole Institute of Neurosciences in Alicante.

Children's drawings have always fascinated me.

They are beautiful and have a freshness that an adult simply cannot imitate.

Besides, they just come out by themselves, it's wonderful. They see and learn something that inspires them and they start drawing.

When I started with Danio's project I also realized that if I reinterpreted those drawings that my children made and included them in my videos and materials, other children would be much more interested. It must be that they reach them better, I couldn't tell you.

But they love them and I love them too.

That is why it has become one of those things that I have been dragging along these years in Learn with Danio: the drawings are made by the children. If anything, I go over them. Look at this video, and don't tell me it's not beautiful.

They send me their drawings and with them and all the material generated with the animal of the month I make an interactive book.

Look at the ones Claudia has sent me of worms. These I will put them in the interactive story of worms that I am preparing.

Cuando trabajaba en el CSIC tenía el despacho lleno de dibujos de mis hijos. Era el despacho más bonito de todo el Instituto de Neurociencias de Alicante. Mira

Los dibujos de l@s niñ@ siempre me han fascinado.

Son preciosos y tienen una frescura que un adulto sencillamente no puede imitar.

Además, es que les sale solo, es maravilloso. Ven y aprenden algo que les inspira y se ponen a dibujar.

Cuando empecé con el proyecto de Danio me di cuenta además, que si yo reinterpretaba esos dibujos que hacían mis hij@s y los metía en mis vídeos y materiales, otr@s niñ@s se interesaban mucho más. Debe ser que les llegan mejor, no sabría decirte.

Pero a ell@s les encantan y a mí también.

Por eso se ha convertido en una de esas cosas que he ido arrastrando a lo largo de estos años en Aprende con Danio: los dibujos los hacen l@s niñ@s. Yo si acaso los repinto por encima. Mira este vídeo, y no me digas que no es una preciosidad.

Por supuesto, no podía ser de otra manera en El Fabuloso Club Danio.

Ya ando de vuelta de Nepal.

Es un país que se te queda grabado en el alma, del que tenemos mucho que aprender.

Pero, también he visto muchas cosas terribles.

Hay una imagen que no se me va de la cabeza.

Ocurrió en Pashupatinath, uno de los templos más sagrados del hinduismo dedicado al dios Shiva.

Había mucha gente.

Todos estaban viendo un espectáculo que se hace al anochecer a las orillas del río Bagmati.

Una niña no paraba de seguirme pidiéndome dinero. Yo no quería darle, pero la mirada de esa niña se te clavaba en el alma.

En medio del gentío le di una naranja. Inmediatamente la cogió y se puso a devorarla como si no hubiera un mañana.

-Irene, por favor, cógeme de la mochila todas las galletas que llevo. Esta niña tiene hambre.

Se las dimos y rápidamente las guardó en sus bolsillos como quien esconde un tesoro.

Con gusto me habría llevado esa niña a mi casa, le habría pegado una buena enjabonada como decía mi abuela y la habría adoptado.

Ese era el instinto que me salió en el momento, que quieres que te diga, tengo tres hijos.

Obviamente eso no se puede hacer. Pero pensé que gente mala podía llevársela para cosas malas. Estaba tan desamparada en aquel sitio inmenso, lleno de gente.

No sé que fue de esa niña ni seguramente nunca lo sabré. Pero sí que sé que eso que me imaginé pasa constantemente en Nepal.

Niñas en desamparo son secuestradas de zonas muy pobres o sus familias son engañadas para que las entreguen a mafias con la falsa promesa de conseguir una vida mejor. Luego son llevadas a familas de la India para servir como casi esclavas o son prostituidas.

Me lo contó Laxmi.

Laxmi trabaja en una asociación de mujeres llamada Sasane

En esta asociación forman y ayudan a buscar un trabajo digno a mujeres víctimas de violéncia de género y de prostitución que son rescatadas por otras asociaciones. Les dan las herramientas para poder vivir una vida digna sin depender de sus maltratadores.

También educan a la gente en zonas rurales para prevenirles de esas personas malas que raptan niñas.

Laxmi era una mujer impresionante. Seria, profesional, increíblemente implicada en la asociación. Normal, ella también había sufrido maltrato.

Fuimos a la asociación donde unas chicas maravillosas, nos dieron un curso de cocina y nos enseñaron a hacer momos, una especie de gyozas típicas de Nepal.

También contratamos a porteadoras de esta asociación, para un treking por el Himalaya. Sin ellas sencillamente no habríamos podido hacerlo.

Me quedé impresionada de esta asociación y le prometí a Laxmi que intentaría ayudarles en lo que pudiera.

I'm back from Nepal.

It is a country that remains engraved in your soul, from which we have a lot to learn.

But I have also seen many terrible things.

There is an image that I can't get out of my head.

It happened in Pashupatinath, one of the most sacred temples of Hinduism dedicated to the god Shiva.

There were a lot of people.

They were all watching a show that takes place at dusk on the banks of the Bagmati River.

A girl kept following me around asking for money. I didn't want to give it to her, but the look in her eyes pierced your soul.

In the middle of the crowd I gave her an orange. She immediately took it and began to devour it as if there was no tomorrow.

-Irene, please take all the cookies I'm carrying from my backpack. This child is hungry.

We gave them to her and she quickly put them in her pockets like someone hiding a treasure.

I would have gladly taken that little girl home, given her a good lathering as my grandmother used to say and adopted her.

That was the instinct that came to me at the time, what can I say, I have three children.

Obviously you can't do that. But I thought that bad people could take her for bad things. She was so helpless in that huge, crowded place.

I don't know what became of that little girl and I probably never will. But I do know that what I imagined happens all the time in Nepal.

Homeless girls are abducted from very poor areas or their families are tricked into handing them over to mafias with the false promise of a better life. They are then taken to Indian families to serve as quasi-slaves or are prostituted.

Laxmi told me.

Laxmi works in a women's association called Sasane.

In this association they train and help women victims of gender-based violence and prostitution who are rescued by other associations to find a decent job. They give them the tools to be able to live a dignified life without depending on their abusers.

They also educate people in rural areas to prevent them from those bad people who kidnap girls.

Laxmi was an impressive woman. Serious, professional, incredibly involved in the association. Normal, she had also suffered abuse.

We went to the association where some wonderful girls gave us a cooking course and taught us how to make momos, a kind of gyozas typical of Nepal.

We also hired porters from this association for a trekking in the Himalayas. Without them we simply could not have done it.

I was impressed by this association and I promised Laxmi that I would try to help them in any way I could.

To begin with, I wanted to spread the word about their work in my newsletter because I am sure that on their website, or by writing to Laxmi, you will find ways to collaborate with them.
