You would think I would have been delighted.

Nothing was canceled. Nothing had gone wrong. I had simply finished a few things earlier than expected, and suddenly several hours appeared on the calendar with nothing written inside them.

I looked at the empty space.

Then I started trying to fill it.

There were several possibilities.

There are always several possibilities.

I could get ahead on something.

That phrase has carried a remarkable amount of authority in my life.

Get ahead.

Ahead of what, exactly, is rarely specified.

But it sounds responsible.

I could answer messages that did not require an answer yet.

I could begin something I had planned to do later in the week.

I could find a small household job that had been patiently waiting without lodging a complaint.

I could be useful.

That was the word underneath all the others.

Useful.

I have spent much of my life knowing what usefulness feels like.

A congregation needs a sermon.

A family needs a pastor.

A committee needs a decision.

A grieving person needs someone to sit beside them.

A student needs an answer.

Someone calls your name, and you know where to go.

There is something deeply satisfying about being needed.

There is also, I am discovering, something deeply reassuring about being busy.

Busyness answers certain questions for us.

What should I do?

This.

Where should I be?

Here.

Does my life matter?

Someone needs me, so apparently it does.

An empty afternoon is less helpful.

It does not explain who you are.

It simply opens the door and lets you walk into it.

Perhaps that is why we sometimes fill our lives before life has asked to be filled.

Not because we love exhaustion.

Because activity can give us a temporary sense of certainty.

If I am doing something important, I do not have to wonder whether I am important.

That sentence has followed me around for a while.

There is an old restlessness in the human heart that wants to secure itself through doing.

Different traditions have given it different names.

Scripture knows it well.

So did Jesus.

I think of the seventy-two disciples returning from their mission in Luke’s Gospel.

They were excited.

Things had happened.

People had listened.

Even the demons, they told Jesus, submitted to them in His name.

It must have been exhilarating.

Ministry was working.

Jesus shared their joy.

But then He gently moved their attention somewhere deeper.

“Do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

I used to hear that mostly as a lesson in humility.

Perhaps it is.

But these days, I hear something else.

Jesus was giving them an identity that success could neither create nor remove.

Your deepest joy, He seems to say, cannot safely rest in what you are able to accomplish.

Even good things.

Even holy things.

Even things done in My name.

Your name is already held somewhere deeper.

That changes the meaning of an empty afternoon.

If I am loved only when I am useful, then unused time can feel threatening.

If I am loved before usefulness enters the room, then perhaps an open afternoon does not have to justify itself.

Neither do I.

That day, I did eventually do a few things.

I am not yet particularly gifted at wasting an entire afternoon.

But I left some of it alone.

I sat outside for a while.

There were clouds moving slowly enough that I could see their shapes changing.

A squirrel conducted what appeared to be urgent business beneath one of the trees.

I watched without offering assistance.

For a little while, nobody needed me.

Nothing was accomplished.

And nothing was missing.

That last part surprised me.

Nothing was missing.

Perhaps this is one of the quieter gifts of this season of life.

To discover that usefulness is a gift we offer.

It was never meant to become proof that we deserve to be here.

Christ did not begin loving us when we became useful.

And I suspect He will not stop when, from time to time, we are not.

A quiet moment

Busyness may carry more than tasks.

Sometimes it carries identity, reassurance, even our sense of worth.

There is no need to untangle all of that today.

Only to notice.

When you are no longer needed for a little while, what do you begin to believe about yourself?

I had been working at my desk for most of the morning. A few emails needed answers. There were some notes I wanted to organize. One piece of writing had been sitting half-finished for several days, and I finally brought it to a place where I could leave it alone.

I saved the file.

Closed the laptop.

And almost immediately thought:

What’s next?

The question arrived so naturally that I nearly missed it.

Not What would I enjoy doing now?

Not What does this moment need?

Not even Would it be good to rest for a while?

Just: What’s next?

I stood up from the desk and carried my coffee cup toward the kitchen.

There it was again. Next.

There is always something available to answer that question.

• A drawer that could be organized.

• A message that could be sent.

• Something online that could be checked.

• A book that could be started.

• A problem that could be anticipated.

• A perfectly good afternoon that could be improved.

We rarely run out of next.

That may be part of the problem.

I have begun to wonder whether urgency is always loud.

Sometimes, certainly.

There are deadlines and emergencies and people who genuinely need something from us.

But some forms of urgency are almost polite.

They do not shout.

They simply stand behind the present moment and quietly suggest that something more important is about to happen.

Next.

The word can make the life we are actually living feel like a hallway.

We keep walking through it on our way to somewhere else.

I know that feeling well.

For much of my life, the calendar had a natural momentum.

Sunday was always coming.

There would be another sermon.

Another meeting.

Another hospital visit.

Another decision.

Another week waiting just beyond this one.

There is nothing wrong with that rhythm. Much of it was meaningful, and I remain grateful for it.

But rhythms have a way of moving inside us.

Eventually, the calendar no longer has to say “next.”

We say it to ourselves.

Even when no one is asking.

Even when there is nowhere we particularly need to go.

I’ve been noticing... sometimes the hardest thing about the present moment is that it does not promise to become anything else.

It simply asks to be lived.

I thought about that recently while reading the story of Jesus visiting Zacchaeus.

There is a small sentence in Luke’s account that I have hurried past many times.

Jesus looks up into the tree and says, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.”

Today.

Jesus had somewhere to go. Crowds were around Him. Jerusalem lay ahead.

There was, in every sense, a next.

And yet there was Zacchaeus.

Today.

I find that strangely comforting.

Jesus never seems trapped by the next thing.

He can stop beside a blind man when everyone else is moving forward.

He can notice a woman touching the edge of His garment while a dying child waits elsewhere.

He can sit at a table.

He can welcome children.

He can sleep in a boat.

He can remain with the person in front of Him as though that person were not delaying something more important.

Perhaps that is one of the things I am still learning from Him.

Presence does not mean there is nothing next.

There usually is.

Presence simply refuses to let what comes next steal what has been given now.

I reached the kitchen that morning and put the cup in the sink.

For a moment, I started toward the room where I keep a few unfinished projects.

Then I stopped.

Sunlight was coming through the window and falling across part of the kitchen floor.

Nothing remarkable.

Just a rectangle of late-morning light.

I stood there longer than necessary.

No revelation arrived.

No important thought.

The light moved a little.

And for once, I let the next thing wait.

A quiet moment

There will almost always be something next.

But for a few moments, perhaps it does not need you yet.

What is here in your life today that you may be missing because part of you is already living in what comes next?

That sentence should probably have warned me.

I made coffee.

Found a comfortable chair.

Put my phone in another room.

Opened a notebook.

Then I began planning how to be still.

Perhaps five minutes of breathing.

Then some Scripture.

Maybe a few lines in the journal.

I could keep track of what I noticed.

It might be helpful to do this every morning.

Perhaps I should create a routine.

By the time I was finished, I had turned ten quiet minutes into a small personal improvement program.

I sat there looking at the notebook.

Then I laughed.

I had somehow made rest productive.

That seems to be one of the peculiar talents of our age.

We can turn almost anything into a project.

• Sleep becomes sleep optimization.

• Walking becomes step counting.

• Reading becomes a yearly target.

• Prayer becomes a streak.

• Rest becomes recovery so that we can return to work more efficiently.

Even silence can become something we measure.

There is nothing wrong with disciplines.

Most worthwhile things in life require some form of practice.

But I have begun to wonder whether we sometimes carry the very spirit of urgency into the places where we hope to escape it.

We hurry toward stillness.

We work at resting.

We evaluate whether the quiet was successful.

And somewhere along the way, the moment itself disappears.

There is a story in Mark’s Gospel that I have been thinking about.

The disciples had been busy.

People were coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.

Jesus said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a quiet place and rest a while.”

For years, I heard that mainly as permission.

You are tired.

Therefore, rest.

But lately another part of the sentence has caught my attention.

There is something wonderfully unproductive about an invitation.

An invitation is received.

You do not earn your way into it.

You simply accept that someone wants you there.

Perhaps that is what makes true rest difficult for those of us who have spent much of our lives being useful.

We know what to do with responsibility.

We know what to do with a problem.

We know what to do when someone needs us.

But an invitation to simply be present can leave us strangely unsure of ourselves.

What am I supposed to accomplish here?

Nothing, perhaps.

And that can be harder than it sounds.

I think of the disciples later, sitting on the grass while Jesus fed the crowd.

They organized people.

They distributed bread.

They gathered leftovers.

There was plenty to do.

But before any of it happened, Jesus told the people to sit down.

I like that detail.

They sat on the grass.

Before the miracle.

Before the explanation.

Before they knew how the problem was going to be solved.

They sat.

Sometimes Scripture contains a very small word that suddenly feels enormous.

• Sit.

• Come.

• Rest.

• Remain.

Words that do not seem to be in much of a hurry.

That morning, I finally closed the notebook.

I did not time anything.

I did not write down what happened.

I did not improve my breathing.

I drank the coffee.

For several minutes, nothing became anything else.

The chair remained a chair.

The morning remained a morning.

I remained a person whom God loved before I had accomplished a single useful thing.

That was enough.

At least for a few minutes.

And perhaps a few minutes is how we begin remembering.

A quiet moment

It may be worth noticing whether even your rest carries the pressure to become something useful.

No correction is required.

Just attention.

Can you remember the last time you allowed a quiet moment to be nothing more than a quiet moment?

That was all.

The kettle had begun its low hum. Morning light was coming through the window over the sink. Somewhere outside, a bird was making the same three-note call over and over.

There was nothing for me to do.

So, naturally, I began looking for something.

I glanced toward the counter.

A piece of mail I had not opened.

A cup that could be put away.

A small stack of papers that had been sitting there for several days without causing anyone particular distress.

Then I felt the familiar tug toward my phone.

Not because I needed information.

Not because anyone was trying to reach me.

Because there were perhaps forty-five seconds in which nothing was happening.

And apparently that was becoming uncomfortable.

I stood there smiling at myself.

The kettle was doing its job perfectly well.

It did not need my supervision.

Still, something in me wanted to fill the space.

I’ve been noticing how rarely we allow an empty moment to remain empty.

A red light becomes time to check something.

A waiting room becomes time to scroll.

A television commercial becomes an opportunity to reach for another screen.

Even a walk can become something we feel compelled to fill with a podcast, a phone call, music, news, or someone else’s voice.

None of those things is necessarily wrong.

That may be what makes the habit so difficult to see.

The mind simply does not seem to like an unattended room.

Give it a little space, and it starts moving furniture.

One thought.

Then another.

A memory.

A worry.

Something I should do.

Something I forgot to do.

Something someone said three days ago that apparently requires a complete internal rehearing.

The branches keep coming.

And the mind keeps swinging.

That image sent me back to something Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount.

“Do not worry about tomorrow.”

I have heard those words most of my life.

But I wonder whether part of their wisdom lies in the way worry keeps carrying us somewhere other than where we actually are.

Tomorrow.

Yesterday.

The conversation we wish had gone differently.

The decision that has not yet been made.

The future we cannot control.

Jesus keeps calling attention back to what is here.

• Birds.

• Lilies.

• Food.

• Clothing.

• Today.

It is striking, really.

When Jesus wanted people to loosen their grip on anxiety, He did not give them a theory.

He asked them to look around.

“Look at the birds.”

“Consider the lilies.”

Attention returned to the present.

Perhaps that is one reason empty space can feel so unfamiliar.

When nothing is filling the moment, we are left with what is actually here.

And sometimes we have spent so long living one thought ahead that the present feels almost foreign.

The kettle clicked off.

For once, I had not checked anything.

Had not accomplished anything.

Had not used the forty-five seconds efficiently.

I poured the water over the coffee and watched the steam rise.

The bird outside was still making its three-note call.

I had not noticed it had stopped.

Because it hadn’t.

I had simply stayed long enough to hear it.

A quiet moment

You do not have to clear your mind.

Perhaps that is too ambitious anyway.

You might simply notice what your mind reaches for when a little empty space appears.

What do you usually place into the quiet before the quiet has had a chance to speak?

The dishes had been washed.

The emails had all been answered.

For once, there wasn’t anything pressing that needed my attention.

I sat down in my chair on the porch and expected to enjoy the quiet.

Instead, I reached for my phone.

I caught myself before I unlocked it.

Not because I possess unusual discipline.

Because I suddenly realized I did not actually want the phone.

I wanted relief from the feeling of doing nothing.

That surprised me.

Nothing was wrong.

The day had unfolded much as I had hoped.

No crisis.
No conflict.
No unfinished emergency waiting just beyond the edge of my awareness.

Yet there was still a subtle pull toward the next thing.

It made me wonder whether rest is sometimes hardest precisely when we have finally made room for it.

After years of ministry, I have learned that many of our deepest habits survive long after the circumstances that created them have disappeared.

• A soldier may come home while part of him remains on watch.

• A parent may raise children into adulthood while still listening for footsteps in the middle of the night.

• A pastor may retire from weekly preaching while discovering that his soul still expects every Sunday to arrive carrying the same weight it did for forty years.

Perhaps our hearts need time to arrive where our calendars already have.

I have been thinking about that often.

One of the oldest Buddhist teachings speaks about the restless movement of the mind with remarkable honesty. It does not describe an evil mind or a broken mind.

It simply notices a mind that has forgotten how to be still.

That observation sent me somewhere entirely familiar.

“Be still,” the psalmist writes, “and know that I am God.”

I have quoted those words countless times.

Only recently have I begun asking what comes before them.

The invitation to be still is not offered because life has become quiet.

It is offered because God has not ceased to be God.

Perhaps stillness has never depended on silence.

Perhaps it has always depended on trust.

That thought has stayed with me.

I think many of us imagine that if we could just organize life a little better, we would finally become peaceful.

But peace has always been more than an uncluttered schedule.

It is the quiet confidence that Christ is already present before we have finished everything we think needs finishing.

The porch did not become any quieter while I sat there that afternoon.

A truck passed on the road.

Someone down the street was mowing the lawn.

The wind chimes on the neighbor’s porch rang every time the breeze shifted.

Life continued.

So did I.

Only more slowly.

I finally put the phone back on the table and wrapped both hands around my coffee mug.

It had grown almost cold.

I drank it anyway.

It tasted better than I expected.

I have a suspicion that many of the gifts God places into our days arrive the same way.

Not because they are extraordinary.

But because they have been patiently waiting for us to become attentive enough to receive them.

A quiet moment

There is no need to manufacture stillness.

Perhaps it is enough to notice what rises in us when nothing needs to be done.

It isn’t much of a walk. Just far enough to stretch your legs. Past the flower bed that never quite looks the way I imagine it will, past the oak tree that has stood there through every season we have lived in this house, and down to the mailbox.

I have made that little journey thousands of times.

This time, something interrupted me.

Not someone.

Something.

Halfway there, I realized I was hurrying.

There was no reason for it.

No appointment waiting.
No storm rolling in.
No one expecting an answer.

The mail wasn’t going anywhere.

Neither was I.

Only one of us seemed to know it.

So I slowed down.

Not because I had decided to become more mindful. Not because I thought there might be a lesson hidden somewhere between the porch and the mailbox.

I simply became curious.

Why did an ordinary walk feel as though it needed to be finished?

That question stayed with me much longer than the mail did.

I have begun to notice that some of the deepest habits in our lives are not dramatic enough to attract our attention.

They simply become normal.

We hurry through grocery stores.
We hurry through conversations.
We hurry through meals.

Sometimes we even hurry through prayer, hoping to become quiet as efficiently as possible.

Eventually, we stop asking whether the hurry belongs there.

It simply feels like life.

Sometimes the fire is not in the world around me.

Sometimes it is in the pace I have allowed the world to set inside me.

That realization sent me back to a familiar story in Luke’s Gospel.

Martha welcomed Jesus into her home.

Mary sat at His feet.

I have preached that passage more times than I can remember. For years, I thought the story contrasted work with worship.

I am beginning to wonder whether it contrasts hurry with attention.

Martha was not wrong to prepare a meal. Hospitality is a beautiful thing.

But somewhere along the way, the work became louder than the Guest.

Jesus did not rebuke her generosity.

He gently called her back to His presence. To pay attention to something quieter for a moment.

When I walked back from the mailbox, the afternoon had not changed.

The breeze still moved through the oak leaves.
A mockingbird still perched on the fence.
The neighborhood sounded exactly as it had a few minutes earlier.

The only thing that had changed was my attention.

I have wondered since then how often a Christ-like presence has been waiting for me in moments I was trying to get through.

Not extraordinary moments.

Mailbox moments.

The kind we almost never remember.

Perhaps those are the very places where grace has been waiting all along.

It’s something I’ve done thousands of times without giving it much thought. Fill the Keurig. Switch it on. Wait.

Only this time, I didn’t wait.

Before the water had even begun to warm, I’d picked up my phone.

There wasn’t anything I needed to see. No message I was expecting. No urgent email. No breaking news that would change the shape of the day.

Still, my hand reached almost on its own.

It was such a small moment that, under ordinary circumstances, I would have forgotten it by breakfast.

Instead, I put the phone back down.

Not because I was trying to be disciplined.

Because I became curious.

Why had ten quiet seconds felt like too much?

The machine continued its slow work on the counter. Morning light stretched across the kitchen floor. Outside, a chickadee landed on the fence, looked around as if it had all the time in the world, and began to sing.

Nothing remarkable happened.

And yet something in me had been exposed.

Over the past months, many of us have been exploring what it means to live a quieter life.

• We’ve talked about calendars that became unexpectedly lighter, seasons that changed before we were ready, and the surprising grace that sometimes arrives when life becomes less crowded.

• We’ve opened Scripture together.

• We’ve noticed birds, gardens, conversations, empty chairs, and ordinary afternoons.

• Again and again we’ve discovered that a quieter life is not an empty life. It is simply a less crowded one.

But somewhere along the way another question began following me.

If so many of us long for a quieter life... why is it so difficult to live one?

Not in theory.

In practice.

Why does the hand reach for the phone before the kettle boils?

Why do we hurry through conversations that we later wish had lasted longer?

Why do we finish one task only to feel an almost immediate pull toward the next one?

Why can an unscheduled afternoon feel strangely uncomfortable?

I’ve realized that many of us have become very good at uncrowding our calendars while discovering that our minds are still crowded.

The outside changes faster than the inside.

Perhaps you’ve noticed that too.

Retirement comes, but the hurry remains.

The children leave home, yet the sense of being behind somehow survives.

The meeting ends, but the mind keeps rehearsing it.

The house finally grows quiet, and instead of relief we feel... restless.

For a long time I assumed this was simply modern life.

Lately, I’m not so sure.

One of the oldest Buddhist teachings contains a striking image. It describes the human experience as being on fire—not with visible flames, but with craving, fear, and confusion. Whether or not we share that tradition, the image has stayed with me because it names something many of us recognise.

Sometimes the fire isn’t out there.

Sometimes it’s the feeling that whispers, Hurry.

Hurry before someone else asks.

Hurry before you forget.

Hurry before you fall behind.

Hurry because stopping feels strangely unsafe.

I don’t think most of us wake up intending to live that way.

I certainly don’t.

Yet there it is, appearing in little moments that seem too ordinary to matter. Waiting for the kettle. Standing in a queue. Walking from the car into the supermarket. Sitting quietly before church begins.

The moments where nothing is wrong.

And yet something inside us keeps reaching for the next thing.

Scripture has its own way of describing this.

That thought has stayed with me.

Not because I think God refuses to speak amid busy lives, but because I wonder how often I have mistaken my own hurry for necessity.

How often have I filled spaces that were never empty to begin with?

How often have I assumed that movement and meaning were the same thing?

Those questions have opened a new conversation for me.

Not a departure from A Quieter Life. A continuation of it.

Over the next several weeks I’d like to explore what I’m calling The Sacred Pause.

Not as a technique.

Not as another item for the to-do list.

Certainly not as a way of becoming a better, more efficient person.

Quite the opposite.

As a way of noticing what happens when we stop adding fuel to the hurry that already lives inside us.

We’ll continue doing what we’ve always done here.

We’ll begin with ordinary life.

We’ll wander into Scripture.

From time to time we’ll borrow wisdom from other traditions—not to replace our own faith, but because truth has a way of illuminating truth. Christians have long learned from thoughtful conversations with philosophers, poets, scientists, and neighbors. I hope to continue in that spirit: rooted in Christ, yet humble enough to recognize wisdom wherever it genuinely helps us love God and our neighbors more faithfully.

Mostly, though, we’ll keep paying attention.

To kitchens.

To gardens.

To traffic lights.

To conversations.

To the moments we usually walk past too quickly.

Because I have a growing suspicion that the quieter life we’ve been talking about all this time doesn’t begin with changing our schedules.

It begins with noticing the next moment before we rush through it.

The coffee eventually finished that morning.

I poured my cup.

I carried it out onto the porch and sat down while the day was still cool.

For a few minutes, nothing happened.

The bird finished its song.

The coffee became drinkable.

The neighborhood slowly woke.

It wasn’t an extraordinary morning.

But it felt wonderfully uncrowded.

And lately, I’ve begun to think that God does some of His best work in moments exactly like that.

There is a quiet assumption that often follows us through life.

That if things become quieter…
if the pace slows…
if the demands begin to ease…

then something must be missing.

Not necessarily something obvious.

But something important.

Because we have come to associate fullness with activity.

With movement.
With engagement.
With the steady presence of things that require our attention.

And so, when life becomes less crowded, it can feel—at least at first—as though it has also become less full.

But over time, a different understanding begins to take shape.

Not quickly.

Not all at once.

Just gradually, as space remains long enough to be noticed.

What begins to emerge is not emptiness.

It is a different kind of fullness.

One that is not built on accumulation.

Not shaped by urgency.

Not dependent on constant input.

But present in quieter ways.

In the ability to give attention without dividing it.
In the capacity to remain with something long enough for it to become clear.
In the freedom to let some things pass without feeling the need to respond.

This is not a reduction of life.

It is a reordering of it.

Not everything is held at once.
Not everything is given the same weight.
Not everything is carried in the same way.

And because of that, what remains begins to feel different.

More defined.
More grounded.
More real.

This is not something that can be forced.

It does not come from deciding to do less.

It comes from beginning to see more clearly what does not need to be held.

And allowing that recognition to change something.

Not all at once.

But over time.

An uncrowded life is not created in a moment.

It is formed slowly.

As attention becomes less scattered.
As space becomes less threatening.
As quiet becomes something that can be inhabited rather than avoided.

And in that process, something else becomes clear.

Life has not become smaller.

It has become more spacious.

Not less meaningful.

But less burdened by what does not need to be carried.

And in that space, what matters most is no longer competing to be noticed.

It is simply… present.

Perhaps this is what we have been moving toward all along.

Not a life with less in it.

But a life where there is room for what is already there.

A quieter life.

Not empty.

Just… less crowded.

Closing Thought

A quieter life is not an empty life—

it is a less crowded one.

That if we could just become a little quieter…
a little more attentive…
a little more spiritually aware…

then perhaps we would begin to hear something that has not yet been there.

But over time, a different possibility begins to take shape.

Not that something has been absent.

But that something has been present… and difficult to recognize.

Not because it was unclear.

But because it did not arrive in the ways we expected.

We have spent much of our lives surrounded by voices that compete for attention.

They repeat themselves.
They increase in urgency.
They push forward until they are noticed.

And without realizing it, we begin to expect that what matters most will arrive in the same way.

Clear. Immediate. Impossible to overlook.

But God’s voice does not follow that pattern.

It does not rely on repetition to establish itself.
It does not press forward with urgency.
It does not compete with everything else in order to be heard.

It remains what it is.

Steady.
Consistent.
Aligned with what has already been made known.

And because of that, it is often not recognized in the moment.

It is recognized over time.

• In the way something aligns with what is already true, even when it is not immediately convenient.

• In the way clarity forms gradually, rather than arriving all at once.

This is not always how we expect it to happen.

We look for something more obvious.
More distinct.
More certain.

But what we are often given is something quieter than that.

Not because it is absent.

But because it is steady.

Over time, as life becomes even slightly less crowded, something begins to change.

Not in what is being said.

But in what we are able to recognize.

There is a kind of tiredness that does not come from doing too much.

Jesus Himself withdrew at times—not to escape what mattered, but to remain rooted in it.

“But He would withdraw to desolate places and pray.” (Luke 5:16, ESV)

Not constantly.

Not as a system.

We often imagine that what we need most will come through more effort, more attention, more engagement.

Often in moments when we are no longer taking in something new—but allowing what we have already encountered to settle.

Scripture speaks of this kind of formation in a different language:

• “Be transformed by the renewal of your mind…” (Romans 12:2, ESV)

Renewal is not the same as accumulation.

It suggests that something is being clarified, re-ordered, brought into alignment.

And that kind of work requires space.

An uncrowded kind of space.

Not empty of awareness.

But not filled to the point that nothing can take root.

This does not mean stepping away from the world entirely.

It does not mean ignoring what is happening around us.

But it may mean recognizing that constant awareness is not the same as meaningful understanding.

And that the feeling of staying informed can sometimes be just that—

a feeling.

This is what it feels like to hold more than can be held well.

It is not always visible from the outside.

But it is felt from within.

And because it builds gradually, we often adjust to it without noticing.

We move more quickly between things.
We give partial attention instead of full presence.
We learn to function within a kind of low-level distraction.

Not because we choose it.

But because it becomes familiar.

Over time, this kind of fullness begins to shape how we live.

We become less able to linger.
Less able to sit with something long enough for it to become clear.
Less able to recognize what is steady beneath what is immediate.

Not because those things have disappeared.

But because there is less room for them.

There is a moment in Scripture when Jesus speaks to something like this, though in a different context:

“The cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word…” (Mark 4:19, ESV)

The image is not of something being rejected.

It is of something being crowded out.

Not removed.

But unable to take root because there is too much around it.

That is a different kind of problem.

An uncrowded life does not mean a life without responsibility.

It does not mean stepping away from what matters.

It means becoming aware of what we are holding— and whether it is being held in a way that allows it to remain clear, grounded, and in its proper place.

Sometimes the shift is not dramatic.

It is simply noticing: This is too much to hold well.

And allowing that recognition to change something.

Not all at once.

But gradually.

A little more space.
A little more clarity.
A little less accumulation.

Until what remains can be carried more steadily.

Not perfectly.

But well.

Something that once defined part of your life has begun to recede.

And with it, something else begins to surface.

• A quiet sense of absence.

• A question that lingers just beneath awareness.

This is not grief in its most visible form.

We do not only lose what is taken from us.

• A role that once required your presence.

Not because your value was tied to that role.

But because your life was expressed through it.

It lingers—quietly shaping how we feel, how we see ourselves, how we interpret this new season.

Scripture often makes space for this kind of quiet awareness.

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18, ESV)

Not only in moments of obvious grief.

But in the quieter ones as well.

The ones that do not draw attention, but still matter.

An uncrowded life begins to make space for that kind of noticing.

Not to dwell on loss.

Not to become defined by it.

But to acknowledge it honestly.

To allow what has changed to be seen, rather than quickly set aside.

Where do I fit now?

Or, more quietly:

Who needs me?

That question carries more weight than it first appears.

Because it is rarely only about usefulness.

It is about identity.

Over time, we do not only give ourselves to what we do.
We begin to recognize ourselves within it.

And when that begins to shift, even gently, something in us has to adjust.

Not quickly.
But honestly.

There is a passage in Scripture that speaks to something deeper than usefulness:

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10, ESV)

It reminds us that our lives are not accidental.

That what we are given to do matters.

But it also suggests something we may not notice at first:

The works may change.

But the One who formed us—and the fact that we are His—does not.

Which means that being needed is not the foundation of who we are.

It is one expression of it.

And when that expression changes, it can feel as though something essential has been taken.

But perhaps it has not been taken.

Perhaps it has been… rearranged.

Not long ago, I picked up my granddaughter from school and made dinner for her.

It was a small thing.

Simple.
Unremarkable, in many ways.

But it did not feel small.

It felt like a different kind of presence.

Not built on urgency.
Not defined by responsibility in the way it once might have been.

But steady.
Available.
Unhurried.

And somewhere in that ordinary moment, I realized:

This, too, is being needed.

Not in the way it once was.

But not less.

Just… different.

There are ways of being needed that fill a calendar.

And there are ways of being needed that fill a room.

The first is easy to measure.

The second is easy to miss.

Not that we are needed less—
