As you know, I’m raising funds for Two-Fisted Tales of the Argonauts over on FundMyComic.com

I’m hoping to use this to really build up some extra origin stories and help you get to know these heroes and the universe a lot better.

If you haven’t already, I’d really appreciate the backing over on the site, if you didn’t buy issue 1 or haven’t read any of my comics before this will be at least 64 pages of illustrated pages, more if I can get other indie creators to contribute some of their own material and perhaps include prose stories, interviews, etc. Overall I’m shooting for at least 72 pages of interior material, published in magazine format.

The stories I’d like to include are:

Expanding Raven and the Red Claw to at least 12 pages

Expanding Crimson Eagle’s First Flight to 14 pages

An Aurelius origin story

If all of my subscribers back something then the comic will get funded!

I’m also planning to commission some brand new original art for the interiors, just some great pin-up pages from artists to expand the world a little, flesh out some characters you haven’t met, and include some 1-2 page strips/shorts too!

I want this to be the best comic book you guys read all year, and continue my homage of old-school pulp magazine heroes.

Two-Fisted Tales of the Argonauts Campaign

My goal right now is to reach a stage where I put out one campaign with two comics every 18 months. This will look like the following:

An issue of the Unbreakable Argonauts accompanied by an anthology, Tales of the Argonauts, or maybe I’ll stick with the Two-Fisted Tales of the Argonauts name.

Basically, the anthology will collect the last published issue of UA alongside back-ups and short stories. So let’s say I’m funding UA #3, the anthology will collect UA #2 alongside some short stories. In the anthology I’d also like to publish some prose, host work from other small creators searching for an audience and so on. The anthologies will be magazine format and dimensions.

At the same time, I’m still planning to produce a monthly strip, right now I’m really just trying to work out who I’d want to do that with, the style, which story I can commit to that for, etc. I want it to be something more unique to me, possibly a continuation of the Three Bears strip. This would be published exclusively behind paywall though, or at least the colour versions would be.

Whenever I feel I have enough pages for any given back-up story to fill out a complete issue, that will be crowdfunded as its own project. So if I reach 32 pages and a complete story for Lucky Duck Inc., I’ll launch it as its own comic for like $500 funding goal or something like that.

If I feel confident enough in a project’s success then I will launch a crowdfund outright for it, but mostly I want to keep things simple because I tend to get annoyed by other crowdfunders who start dropping tie-in issues and spinoffs on people. I definitely want to stay a bit more streamlined and focused, and if I do launch a side project it’ll be disconnected from the main series so there’s no obligation or necessity to back it.

Just to say a little more on Two-Fisted Tales of the Argonauts, I priced it fairly low if you JUST want to read the back-up stories, and this is your chance to buy the last remaining copies of issue 1 too.

If this is a success it tells me there’s still a future for this universe, and the more profit I can make off it, the more will be deducted from the goal of UA2 the next time I try and crowdfund it. I’m not really looking to profit from making comics, I’d prefer for it to be a self-sustaining venture if that makes sense? Every penny made from a campaign is set aside to make more comics!

Also I think I showed this before but this is a mock-up idea of a horror anthology I would like to do down the line outside of normal UA stuff.

In essence, this is me taking a brief step away from the main issue #2 and looking back to the character backstories, the back-up tales, etc. Here, you can get 26 pages of story for just $4!

This campaign is mostly a digital first-driven one, the two main stories I’m looking to continue are the Crimson Eagle and Raven & Red Claw stories. Many of you here would have read the first chapters of both, this will be a continuation. My goal is for both stories to become long-running serials in the vein of The Phantom, just released in chapters rather than one page at a time. However, we also offer a print version of Argonauts Magazine, which collects UA1 plus all the digital back-ups we’ve already made and those we will make with this campaign - at least 64 pages of material for just $20!

Depending on how much we raise here, there might be even more stories to unveil! I have two years of scripts for short stories and serialized adventures to get out here.

For those who haven’t picked up Unbreakable Argonauts #1 yet, we also have a limited number of first prints of Yanick Paquette’s cover available on this campaign, (but no other covers as they were all limited runs!)

TWO-FISTED TALES OF THE ARGONAUTS

This is very much not the update I wanted to bring, but here goes.

The comic has been on Kickstarter for almost 4 weeks, and the momentum just isn’t there. We had a great first week, but movement fell off immediately after that. We actually broke 10% that first week, but only an additional 2% in the 3 weeks since then. Despite getting over 100,000 views across my socials and several livestream appearances, it’s clear the audience isn’t there and I should have put a lot more work into building both Substack and the prelaunch following.

What this means is the comic simply Isn’t viable right now. I’m going to give it either until tonight or tomorrow morning, but at the moment I’m almost certainly going to close it up within the next 24 hours.

What does this mean?

I plan on completing this book one way or another. I’m probably going to fund more of it on my own dime over the next six months. This might only amount to a few extra pages or it might mean we go live next time with half the book complete, I’m not sure. Making comics can be expensive!

But I’m committed to the book, even if I have to serialise it on Patreon (I have a patreon by the way, I’m just not advertising it at all until I’ve built up a nice stack of content there).

Anyway, I’ve actually just landed a gig writing a short story in someone else’s anthology, so that will be a ton of fun to do. Ideally I’d like to get monetised on twitter at some point and use money from that to sort of self fund comics so they pay for themselves (sort of).

This isn’t the first time I’ll feel crowdfunding defeat and I’m sure it won’t be the last!

I’m not giving up on the book, just acknowledging that this isn’t the campaign that’ll get it made. And that’s ok.

If you want Unbreakable Argonauts #1, let me know and I’ll look into using a crowdfunding site as a storefront just to sell copies of #1 digitally. Maybe FMC, as they have a devoted storefront page format.

We had a great first day on launch, I’m just reaching out to kind of let you know what I’m planning for the duration of the campaign.

I want to be conscious of your time, not spamming you guys and whatnot, so I’m setting a rule that I’ll use Substack and the mailing list no more than once a week each, and will space them out so it doesn’t feel like I’m spamming you.

Unbreakable Argonauts 2

The main reason for this is simple: A lot of people miss their email notifications, and if you don’t respond to a Substack email (which most don’t since it’s just a newsletter after all), it can be redirected to your spam folder.

I know I say this every time, but earlier backing and building momentum for the campaign is genuinely crucial for its success!

The Unbreakable Argonauts 2 is making good progress, and I just want to reach out to those who have backed us so far and send a heartfelt thank you!

I’m thinking of doing a Substack every Monday and a mailing list sendout every Friday. The Substack will be long form content including other things I want to write about, the mailing list will be more direct to just promote the comic.

The Unbreakable Argonauts #2 Launches TOMORROW - Friday 22nd May

This comic is even more important than the first for Argonaut Comics because it includes an astonishing perk — Tales of the Argonauts. This is a mega-sized anthology comic that will collect the first two issues, all the concept art, short stories and some new back-ups and exclusive comic strips!

The anthology includes the long-awaited continuation of Lucky Duck Inc.

About the Perks:

• This will include a cheaper than usual digital copy of UA2 - this will ONLY include the main story though, no back-ups.
