इस संस्मरण का शीर्षक कुछ अटपटा लग सकता है। हो सकता है कि कुछ पाठक मुझे नैतिक सापेक्षवाद1 का पक्षधर मान लें। कुछ लोग मुझे नास्तिवादी (Nihilist) समझ लें। पर ऐसा नहीं है। मैं बस एक विशेष संदर्भ में सज्जनता के नुक्सान बता रहा हूँ जो कि अधिकाधिक किसी को हंसा ही सकते हैं। रोने वाला यहाँ कुछ भी नहीं है।

बात इस वर्ष जनवरी की है। मैं दक्षिण भारत में प्रवास पर था। एक कार्यक्रम के निमित्त मेरा केरल एवं तमिल नाड़ु के विभिन्न प्रतिष्ठित शिक्षण संस्थानों में जाना हो रहा था। मैं और मेरे एक भाई समान कार्यकर्ता रात में यात्रा करते थे और दिन में निदेशकों, कुलपतियों एवं छात्रों से मिलकर उस अकादमिक आयोजन का पोस्टर विमोचन तथा आमंत्रण के काम में लगते थे। साथ-साथ कुछ बैठकें भी हो रही थीं। तिरुचिरापल्ली, चेन्नई, कराइकल, पुदुच्चेरी, कासरगोड़, कोड़िकोड़ इत्यादि स्थानों पर हमारा जाना हुआ।

यात्रा के आरंभ से शुरु करते हैं। बैंगलोर से चेन्नई को रेल पकड़ने के पूर्व इंदू2 भाई ने मुझसे कहा कि यहाँ आप “उत्तर भारतीय” भोजन कर लीजिए क्योंकि इसके पश्चात आपको सब जगह इडली-दोसा ही मिलेगा। मैने उनसे कहा मुझे दक्षिण भारतीय व्यंजन बहुत प्रिय हैं। मैं तो जे.ऐन.यू. में भी दिन में एक बार दोसा-इडली-उत्तपम में से कुछ न कुछ खाता ही था। पर फिर भी हम स्टेशन के निकट ही रेलगाड़ी के डब्बेनुमा हल्दीराम गए और हमने भोजन पाया।

यात्रा आरंभ होने के पश्चात जहाँ भी कोई विकल्प रहता वहाँ इंदू भाई मुझे चपाती अथवा परोटा खिलाते। हमारे संगठन में यदि कार्यकर्ता यात्रा में होते हैं तो परिचित कार्यकर्ता साधारणतः स्टेशन में आकर भोजन दे जाते हैं। यह सामान्य व्यवहार है। ऐसे अवसरों पर भी वह मेरे लिए अलग से चपाती ही मंगवाते थे और अपने लिए दोसा। इंदू जी संवेदनशील व्यक्ति हैं, इसलिए वह सोच रहे थे कि मुझे अपना मन मारकर कुछ खाना न पड़े। मैनें उन्हें एक-दो बार समझाने का प्रयास भी किया कि यदि आप दोसा खा रहे हैं तो मुझे दोसा खाने से कोई आपत्ती नहीं है। उल्टा मैं अपने कुछ दिनों के प्रवास में स्थानीय व्यंजनों का आनंद ले सकूँगा। संकोचवश मैं भी उन्हें बार-बार कह नहीं पाया। यद्यपि इंदू जी अडिग रहे — मुझे रोटी खिलाने को। उनकी मंशा स्पष्ट थी। वह नहीं चाहते थे कि मुझे दिल्ली (मेरे तत्कालीन निवास) की याद आए, जो कि किसी को चाह कर भी आ भी नहीं सकती।

व्यक्ति वो सज्जन ठहरे, परंतु सच कहूँ तो इस सज्जनता का मुझे नुक्सान हो गया।

मेरे एक परिचित हैं। बड़े भाई ही समझिए। मैं उनका बहुत सम्मान करता हूँ।

एक बार हम कहीं जा रहे थे। कश्मीरी गेट मेट्रो की बात है। वह अपने बारे में बताने में बहुत आतुर रहते हैं। मुझसे एकदम विपरीत, वे बहुत बातुनी हैं। किसी विश्वविद्यालय में सहायक आचार्य हैं। तब किसी अन्य प्रांत में कार्यरत थे। जब यह लेख लिख रहा हूँ, तब कहीं और हैं। उन्होंने बताया कि वे हिन्दू अध्ययन में स्नातकोत्तर (M.A.) की उपाधि पाने वाले हैं। पाठ्यक्रम के बारे में बताते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि

मैं इतने अचंभे में था कि कुछ बोल नहीं पाया। मैं वैसे भी बौद्धिक विषयों में अपने खास लोगों से वाद-विवाद नहीं करता। बहुत अधिक किसी को ज्ञान देने से बचता हूँ। बड़ों को तो बिल्कुल भी नहीं। विषय बदल गया। बात चलती रही। अब वे अपने बारे में कुछ और बता रहे थे।

Thus begins ‘Ha Ha Hu Hu’, a remarkable novella by Viswanadha Satyanarayana.1 The people were shocked as to what this creature was. The scholars were astonished as to which category of organisms the speaking creature belonged to. The authorities were scared that, if left free, the giant could massacre the populace of London. An eight-foot-tall, well-built “Horse-Headed God” (Gandharva), straight out of Paurāṇika lore, fell from the sky with two long vertical wounds between its shoulders. And the enchanting short novel gets more and more interesting with every page. We will not discuss the whole story here, however enticing it may be. Let me discuss what concerns this essay.

The story is set in London during the heyday of the British Crown. Viswanadha introduces a Paurāṇika being in the modern imperialist setting amidst an empire that believed, and rightfully so, that the whole world was its territory- to be understood, marked, and captured. However, the ‘understanding’ was not developed under the subject cultures’ knowledge frameworks. The collection of knowledge, although a novel pursuit, was also a political act to consolidate power over colonial subjects. The orientalist-anglicist debate, discussed by Arvind Sharma in The Ruler’s Gaze, adds another interesting nuance to Said’s much-cited ‘Orientalism’ framing of colonial scholarship on the Orient.

Two Epistemologies in Conflict

The same tussle between epistemologies, or the multiple understandings of what constitutes knowledge and how to collect/transmit it, is witnessed in Ha Ha Hu Hu. The Sanskrit scholars from European universities are ever excited to discuss Hindu culture, philosophy and the Sanskrit language with the learned Gandharva adept in Prakrit-Sanskrit languages. On the other hand, a Zoologist and a Linguist are hell-bent upon opening the brain and throat of the strange creature to know how he speaks with a horse's head, and how he is so wise. The following is a discussion between them (pp. 33):

The Scientific Murder of Wonder

I am not taking sides on epistemes. Though, in this case, the “scientific” side wanted to cut open his brain. There can be unethical practices on both sides. There may be more sides to this discussion as well. I am not denying anything. I am just pinpointing a certain aspect of the positivist-empirical colonial approach to knowledge. A belief that what cannot be experienced without effort, experimented upon or explained away rationally cannot be knowledge. This is what we will refer to as ‘the scientific murder of wonder’, the utter disbelief in the possibilities of raising oneself to higher and higher forms of knowledge.

Wonder is one of the most organic feelings of all. It signifies the acknowledgement of ignorance. It provides the fertile land on which knowledge grows and flourishes. A traditional environment that celebrates wonder turns us into “a Jigyasu (Desirous of and seeker after knowledge and Wisdom), a Mumuksu (Desirous of and seeker after Absolute Release) and a Sadhaka (Wayfarer or one who can hit the mark)”, signifying the “aspect of the reflexivity of human consciousness” (A. K. Saran, Traditional Vision of Man). Whereas a narcissistic impulse of modernity (which may not be limited to the modernist paradigm but is surely deified by it) to deny any truth in traditions just because they don’t pass the positivist-empiricist vibe-check is intellectually and morally deranged behaviour.

Ha Ha Hu Hu, in response to an observation by a British scholar who had come with a team to forcefully make him take chloroform for the surgical procedure on him without his consent, notes:

When the chloroform didn’t work, the few “curious” scholars, with the help of authorities, then got him shot with bullets. He didn’t die but didn’t seek revenge either. The mayor was convinced of his goodness. No one bothered him again. The rest of the story you may read for yourself. Viswanadha tries to downgrade “mechanical means” of acquiring knowledge as subservient to the yogic means through ‘Ha Hu’. It may be true in some regards, but the fact that we cannot imagine our lives without institutions made by a civilisation that prioritised these very mechanical means above others tells us a lot about the reality of the world. It is complicated. Still, I will now argue that there exist other means of acquiring knowledge and forms of knowledge, and we need epistemic humility to understand them while studying them.

Science, Scientism, and Epistemic Humility

Positivism and empiricism are legitimate forms of knowledge gathering, but they are not the sole ones. Moreover, whenever “science” people portray science as such, they actually become unscientific in doing so. The limits and contours of scientific knowledge also keep expanding and contracting with new discoveries or paradigm shifts (such as with the theories of gravitation and relativity). Additionally, falsification of existing scientific knowledge is a basic feature of science, as popularised by Karl Popper. Hence, science cannot be used as dogma to legitimise some forms of knowledge as less or more scientific. It is simply a sceptical enterprise, a rigour in process, which can produce replicable and universalisable knowledge. However, when science is used as a dogma, it is called ‘scientism’, a term explained by Nassim Nicholas Taleb in Skin in the Game. Taleb defines it as

He elaborates,

He further argues that it is unscientific to apply science outside its firmly defined boundaries. Karl Popper reinforces this by showing that “true” science is humble, negative (focused on error), and non-dogmatic, unlike the “scientism” that dogmatically asserts facts. Using science as a dogma does the same thing that the Christian religion did in the Dark Ages of Europe – it kills wonder and puts a systemic censor on the discovery of new forms of knowledge. Unfortunately, the mediocre people in India have been using the term “scientific temperament” to delegitimise just anything and legitimise their detestable mediocrity. PM Nehru comes to mind. This brings me to an experience that situates these arguments in a real-life context.

Mahākumbha 2025 as a Field of Wonder

I was part of a team that organised a research internship to document the experiences of Kalpavāsī-s, Tīrthayātrī-s, Sadhu-s, and workers participating in Mahākumbha 2025 at Prayagraj. My vantage point was a deep feeling of wonder. How come a gathering of crores of people is organised for a month and a half, and then everything goes back to normal? No one is invited. No one is the invitee. People come. They meditate, bathe, do some pūjā, and go back home. It is a microcosm of India – people of all orientations, backgrounds and regions are present there. You may be devoted to the whole affair and yet be disgusted by some aspect of it. It is a true khichdi of sorts. A wonder of wonders of the world. I reiterate that my position as an organiser was a position of wonder.

When “Scientific” Becomes a Gatekeeping Label

Some of my colleagues in the organisation thought differently, which they claimed was “scientific”. My organisation, a voluntary one, is known for doing things with consensus. So, I had to talk and discuss with a lot of people, a few of whom didn’t know what they were talking about. In a meeting with science teachers from the University of Delhi (because the internship had to be “scientific”), an assistant professor asked me, “Is there any scientific literature available on Kumbha?” I shared the PDF of a scholarly work on Kumbha, which was the result of decades of field research in Prayagraj. The teacher skimmed through the book in less than a minute and commented in the online meeting that “this is not scientific”. I was overtly irritated by then. You could hear it in my voice.

In another such “scientific” meeting, some professors pointed out that “the questionnaire was not scientific enough”. After a minute or two of vague and confusing suggestions, I asked them to suggest changes in writing. No rewards for guessing; none were given. On top of that, one of the teachers called me one evening and requested to collect samples of Ganga water to check their quality in a lab. She narrated how a leftist caucus in JNU had formed a team and proved that Kumbha polluted the Ganga, and she wanted to prove otherwise. I don’t want to comment much on this, and I didn’t then, but I couldn’t stop myself from asking her a simple question: “If we find that the water is actually polluted, should we advocate for the discontinuation of Kumbha?”

The Sacred Bath and the Limits of Explanation

Interestingly, the answer to why people actually visit Kumbha was given by the “scientific” coterie themselves. A couple of female science teachers actually made it to the Kumbha, while many among them promised. They came to the camp we were staying at. I was told that they were there for the internship. The next day, they even went with us for the interviews. The coming night was Mauni-Amāvasyā, one of the most auspicious ones for the ritual baths at the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and the invisible Saraswati. In the evening, both of them disappeared, and I got to know that they had gone to Triveni Sangam for the sacred bath. Due to a stampede that killed many dozens of people and thorough overcrowding (as warned by the authorities beforehand), they couldn’t reach the confluence, took a bath in a canal nearby and left for Delhi from there.

Can anyone please explain this in a rational way as to why someone “scientific” would go to a place which was prone to stampede at night for a ritualistic bath? Can there be any other reason than a religious one for this irrational behaviour? However, this irrational behaviour cannot be termed ‘scientific’ or ‘unscientific’. There must be reasons for this behaviour, especially since it has been repeated by crores of people every year for at least the past millennium. We can look for those reasons through science, but labelling such an experience as “unscientific” is itself unscientific and hence an example of scientism. Interestingly, the same ma’am asked me earlier in the evening if I had incorporated the “scientific” suggestions on the questionnaire. I replied that no suggestions had been given in writing, and she faked a shock.

Why is it so difficult to understand a knowledge tradition on its own terms? Why cannot scholars, of all people, stop being dogmatic and start studying traditions for what they claim to be? Traditions may not answer the questions they don’t claim to answer, but isn’t that justified? This is not a left-right debate. Hence, it may not interest many among the readers. To the disappointment of many, we cannot imagine the West as the only culprit here. Indians are producing idiotic rants as scholarship on traditions they neither understand nor respect, to stick to their self-definitions or epistemologies. Unfortunately, all of this is being done in the name of IKS.

Neither Scientism nor ‘Scientific’ Hinduism

I am not only criticising a section of Indian academia for using their dogmatic definition of science as the sole legitimising tool for IKS. In turn, Indian academia is moving towards the rise of IKS as a dogma when it is used to legitimise any redundant nonsense. I am also critical of the so-called “rational” Hindu who is always excited to portray a tradition as “scientific” or vice versa. We need wonder. We need traditions that sustain wonder among us. Whatever the level of scientific progress in the world, the unknown will always exist. Just because we are living in a world of informational revolution doesn’t mean that there remains nothing unknown.

In simpler words, just because my small brain cannot accommodate a truth doesn’t mean that it is a lie. If there is a traditional way to access that truth, and even if that way doesn’t involve laboratories, the truth stands unperturbed. To be adept at some forms of knowledge, the subject has to raise themselves to become receptive to such knowledge. Otherwise, leave it. It is comical to defend something we do not understand or respect. Trivialising some higher forms of knowledge to feel good about one’s own accumulated information is L behaviour. There may be things we never know about. It doesn’t make us less intelligent beings to accept it. Wonder should be fashionable in intellectual circles. It is the most natural emotion for a scholar to have.

Kumbha Does Not Need Scientific Validation

Any form of dogma, masquerading as knowledge, that kills wonder naturally becomes anti-knowledge and should be condemned as such. Kumbha survives and thrives not because of governments. Governments may gain votes because of Kumbha, but Kumbha as a traditional entity is self-sustaining. It has stood the test of time without any pseudo-scientific justification. It does not need them now. Moreover, every form of knowledge has its own methods of accession and transmission, which must be respected if we want to study it.

I am not very hopeful that things will get better in Indian academia if they proceed as they are. I wish they would. But at least we should start discussing the scientific murder of wonder that is being committed in front of us every day. We should condemn it as much as we can. We should stop doing it if we have been. Maybe our sense of wonder has already been sacrificed at the altar of scientism. Then there is no hope for us. We are destined to live a cursed life of joylessness, arrogance and ignorance. On the other hand, if we have any semblance of self-reflection left, understand the worth of wonder. Let us understand that not everything is knowable in the present moment, nor should it be known.

Reaching conclusions hurriedly is boring. Keeping your mind open to newer possibilities is cool. Following traditions without knowing the reason for it is not unscientific. It may be irrational, but so is love, and many other beautiful things that make life worth living. We don’t stop loving unless we are a depressed creature. In the words of S. N. Balagangadhara, we follow traditions because they are what we pass down through generations. There is no other reason needed. People don’t stop following traditions, especially when they don’t hurt anyone, unless they blindly follow the “scientific”, or rather unscientific, dogma that murders the beauty that is wonder. A murder may be “scientific”, but a murder is a murder.

Why Do They Gather? I wonder…

I am not only talking about the wonder of the seen, but also the never-ending possibilities of the unseen. The drop of ambrosia that fell from the Paurāṇika Samudra-Manthana. The nectar of immortality that made Prayag sacred. The story is situated in a time that is beyond time, in a geography that is beyond geography, amidst beings that are beyond all materiality, and is still a reality in the experience of a believing Bhakta. The eternal battle between Deva-s and Dānava-s. The mediation by Viṣṇu. The pitcher, or Kumbha, that emerged gloriously from the churning of the ocean. The four drops that fell on four specific locations where we celebrate Kumbha today.

People gather there to meditate, to give sermons, to see holy people, to take sacred baths, to repeat the names of their īṣṭa-s, to enjoy, and to be among the people of this sacred geography, without any invitation. They gather because they wonder. They gather because they know how to believe. They gather because they are not deluded into believing that they know. They gather because they know that they believe. They believe that the Deva-s exist; so do the Dānava-s. They believe there is an eternal struggle. They believe that there will be good and bad ramifications of that battle. They believe that Mahādeva will drink the poison and leave the drops of amrit – the nectar of immortality, of all that is blissful – for them. In a bleak age of demoralising scepticism, degenerating mistrust and distressing commitment issues, they believe in something uplifting.2 They believe in something that transcends basic animal existence in the modern age of unquenchable greed and soul-crushing utilitarianism.

They believe. How wonderful!

द्विवेदी जी को एक निबंध की यह पंक्तियां पढ़ते हुए मेरा ध्यान सहसा ही भगवान् श्रीकृष्ण की ओर गया। जाता भी क्यों न!

विरोधों और संघर्षों के बीच पली! भगवान् ने बाल्यकाल से ही कितने ही दानवों एवं राक्षसों को धूल चटा दी थी। क्या-क्या जतन-प्रयत्न नहीं हुए उनकी जीवन-लीला समाप्त करने के लिए! कंस मामा राक्षस पर राक्षस भेजता रहा। राक्षसी पूतना ने तो गोपी का वेष धारण कर उपने स्तनों पर विष चढ़ा उन्हें स्तनपान तक कराने की धृष्टता कर दी थी। परिणाम हुआ क्या? कन्हैया ने यों काटा कि वह जीवित ही न रह पाई।

उसे जन्म के समय ही मार डालने की कोशिश की गई! कंस मामा द्वारा श्रीकृष्ण के सभी ज्येष्ठ भाई-बहनों को जन्मते ही मार डालने के कुकर्म तो विश्व-विख्यात हैं। उसकी बहन देवकी के विवाहोपरांत एक आकाशवाणी होती है। देवकी-वासुदेव का आठवां पुत्र पापी कंस की मृत्यु का कारण बनेगा। कंस अपने बहन-बहनोई को मथुरा में कारागार में बंद कर देता है और उनके सभी नवजात शिशुओं को जन्मते ही मार डालता है। यही कुकर्म वह श्रीकृष्ण के जन्म के समय भी करना चाहता था, परंतु कर नहीं पाया।

पर वह मरी नहीं! भगवान् की कुछ यों लीला हुई कि उनका जन्म होते ही कारागार के सभी सुरक्षाकर्मी मूर्छित हो गए। सभी द्वार खुल गए। तेज़ आंधी-बरसात में वासुदेव यमुना पार जाते हैं और नंदगांव में श्रीकृष्ण को छोड़कर वापिस आ जाते हैं। इस प्रकरण के बारे में कंस को अगले दिन ही पता चलता है।

क्योंकि उसकी जीवन-शक्ति का अक्षय स्रोत जनचित्त है! श्रीमद्भागवत में “अहं भक्तपराधीनो ह्यस्वतन्त्र इव द्विज…”1 का भाव ही तुलसीदास2, कबीरदास3 इत्यादि अनन्य भक्तों की वाणी में भी झलकता है। श्रीकृष्ण कोई इतिहास पुरुष नहीं, विद्यानिवास मिश्र जी के शब्दों में कहें तो, ‘भाव पुरुष’ हैं। वे भारतीय जनचित्त में अपार संभावनाओं की रस-पूर्ण अनंतता के द्योतक हैं। इसीलिए हर जन्माष्टमी उनका जन्म होता है। वे मुरली मनोहर हमारे मध्य सदैव विद्यमान हैं, इस नीरस आधुनिक जीवन में प्रेम-वर्षा करते हुए। भारतीय जन-चित्त उनकी उपस्थिति के बिना मरुस्थल हो जाए। जब तक जनता आनंद एवं उत्सव को लालायित रहेगी, भगवान् मूर्तिमान रहेंगे। स्रोत तो अक्षय ही है।

रूप गोस्वामी द्वारा रचित ‘भक्तिरसामृतसिन्धु’ और ‘श्रीमद्भागवत पुराण’ के अनुसार, भगवान श्रीकृष्ण 64 दिव्य गुणों से सम्पन्न हैं। उन्हें हिंदू धर्म में ‘पूर्ण अवतार’ और ‘सोलह कला सम्पूर्ण’ माना जाता है।4 यदि हमने भारतेंदु, जयशंकर, प्रेमचंद, हज़ारीप्रसाद, गुप्त, निराला, पंत, महादेवी, दिनकर, अज्ञेय जैसी विभूतिओं को पढ़ा हो तो हमें यह समझने में कठिनाई नहीं होगी कि हिन्दी सोलह कला सम्पूर्ण है। हिंदी जनसाधारण की भाषा इसीलिए नहीं है कि उसे कभी राजकीय संरक्षण प्राप्त हुआ है। उल्टा सरकारी बहसों में उलझाने के कारण राजनीति ने इसे कुरूपित कर दिया है।

हिन्दी साधारण जनता की भाषा है। हिन्दी की एक भाषा के रूप में यात्रा को हमें कम से कम भक्ति-काल से समझना पड़ेगा। यह ध्यान रहे तो किसी को आश्चर्य नहीं होगा कि भक्ति-संत एक-दूसरे से सतत संवाद में कैसे थे। हिन्दी की स्वीकार्यता एवं सरलता जनसाधारण को इसी लिए आप्लावित करती है, आकर्षित करती है।

इस भाषा के माधुर्य एवं सुंदरता से आधिकारिक हिन्दी कभी भी न्याय नहीं कर सकी। यद्यपि उसका अपना प्रयोजन होगा, तथापि जनसाधारण उसे साहित्य की भाषा नहीं स्वीकार कर सका। आज के साहित्यकारों का यह कर्तव्य है कि हम आधिकारिक चंगुल से बाहर निकाल हिन्दी को उसके संपूर्ण वैभव में देखें। सरकारे कुछ करें न करें क्या फर्क पड़ता है। सरकारें भाषा थोप सकती हैं, जैसे अंग्रेज़ी, परंतु किसी भी भाषा की स्वीकार्यता तो तभी होती है जब वह कुछ हेतु पूर्ण कर सके।

द्विवेदी जी कहते हैं कि जनता के लिए ही उसका जन्म हुआ है। जब भूलोक में पाप पराकाष्ठा को छू गया था। लोक-जीवन त्राहि-त्राहि की चीत्कार से गूंजायमान था। उसी युगांतर काल में कृष्ण जी का जन्म हुआ था।

वर्तमान हिन्दी-भाषियों, लेखकों एवं पाठकों को यह समझना होगा कि एक भाषा जन-हितैषि तभी बनी रहेगी यदि वह अपने प्रयोग में उन भावों को स्थान दे सके जो आम जनता के हैं, उन विचारों को रूप दे सके जो विचारशील व्यक्तियों के हैं, एवं उन आकांक्षाओं को पंख दे सके जो उभरते भारत की हैं।

हिन्दी सोलह कला संपूर्ण बनी रही है तो इसके वाचकों, पाठकों एवं लेखकों की भीतरी अपराजेय शक्ति के बल पर। श्रीकृष्ण सरीखी हिन्दी अपने आप में दिव्य है, मोहक है। हिन्दी अक्षय है। प्रश्न बस इतना है कि क्या हम उस दिव्यता एवं मोहकता के पात्र बनने का साहस कर सकते हैं? या बाज़ारू दबावों में हम भगवान्, जो कि हमारी अतरात्मा में ही बसते हैं, को भी बेचने को तैयार बैठे हैं?

एक साधारण ग्वाला चाहे पूर्ण सहजता संग राज-पाठ भी भोग आया हो पर है तो वो साधारण जन का चित्तचोर ग्वाला ही! जिसकी मुरली और लीला चहुं ओर अनुग्रह बिखेरती है। क्या वह मुरली प्रेम है अथवा वह लीला प्रेम है? मुझे तो लगता है कि वह ग्वाला ही प्यार की मूरत है। वह कुछ भी करे वह प्रणय-लिप्त ही होगा- प्यार से सराभोर। यही कारण होगा कि उस पर प्रीत लुटाना आमजनमानस के लिए इतना सरल-सहज है।

कृष्ण को भूलने पर कृष्ण की तो कोई हानि होगी नहीं। हम ही निर्बाध हर्ष एवं उल्लास से दूरातिदूर होते जाएंगे। प्रश्न बस इतना ही है कि क्या हम उस स्नेह के, उस विद्या के पात्र हैं जो हमें कन्हैया से मिलेगा? यदि नहीं हैं तो कौन बनेगा? प्रश्न यह भी उठता है कि क्या किसी पुरानी परिपाटी पर उस प्रेम-प्रवह का पात्र बनना संभव है? यदि हमें लगता है कि नहीं है, तो आज उन पगडंडियों को छोड़ नई राहें गढ़ने का समय आ गया है। ध्येय और प्रेम सनातन हैं, परंतु साधन बदले जा सकते हैं। क्योंकि, द्विवेदी जी (‘पुनर्नवा’)5 के ही शब्दों में,...

Contemporary Indian politics, academia, society, and media are obsessed with the construct of caste. We see it everywhere. We witness it in social interactions, affirmative action by the State, electoral calculations, political mobilisations, history writing, and even in the nomination of prominent constitutional posts. The term ‘caste’ is popularly used to mean many things, viz., occupational communities, clans, varṇa, and even modern constitutional categories such as SC, OBC, and General. So some natural questions arise. What exactly does it mean? Does it mean the same to every Indian? Does caste mean anything outside the experience of the coloniser? Is there a caste system? Despite their importance, these are not the questions this essay tackles. I am dealing with this question: Is it possible to see/understand facets of Indian culture outside the prism of ‘caste’ (whatever that means)? The answer may not be simple, but I consider it a thought exercise.

I want to clarify at the beginning that the cognitive impulses manifesting in this essay were born from an experience of mine. So, getting into the details of that particular experience becomes indispensable for this essay to make any sense. Here it goes …

I visited Cape Town, South Africa, to present a research paper titled ‘Itihāsa and Indian Sacred Geography: An Indian Way of Making Sense of the Past’ at an International Conference held on October 22–24, 2024. This was the first time I was visiting a foreign country on my own. So, when I met four other Indian presenters there, it was a good feeling. As my presentation topic dealt with an Indian reality, I hoped that, if not ‘other,’ at least my Indian ‘brethren’ would understand and appreciate my minimal effort. During lunchtime, I even took two fellow Indian scholars to some sites of historical importance, which I had visited earlier. We developed cordial relations. When we returned from the walk, I had to present my paper. The room had around 20 people, of whom 4 were presenters. As stated above, my paper focused on a peculiar sense of the past emanating from the Itihāsa traditions interplaying with the sacred geography of the Greater Indian Region.

It is necessary here to briefly state my arguments. I argued in my presentation that “(f)or a tīrtha-yātrī, itihāsa does not become a thing of the ‘past’ in the linear historiographical scheme of things. . . Rather, it becomes a metaphysical phenomenon that plays out in the lived experience of the devotee.” Citing Vidyāniwāsa Miṣrā, I stated that “(t)he people (characters) of these itihāsa narratives do not remain mere humanly figures of history. Instead, they become bhāva-puruṣa for eternity. We do not celebrate the birthdays of Kṛishṇa or Rāma. We, rather, experience their birth on every Rāma navamī and Kṛishṇa Janmāṣṭamī. Kṛishṇa, Rāma, or Śiva-Pāravatī are infinite realities beyond comprehension. By living amongst our bhāva-puruṣa-s, through festivals, rituals, art forms, and most importantly, pilgrimage, we realise oneness with the infinite, the metaphysical, and the eternal, as in not bounded by time. In this way, the past becomes free from the bondage of historicity.” What I argue here and what a Hindu tīrtha-yātrī experiences is the anubhūti of a state that seems to transcend space and time boundaries, let alone communal identities.

Due to the paucity of time, only two questions were allowed. After trying to answer the first one from a South African lady, the second one was asked by an “Indian” participant. And that question was, “How do you justify the evil hierarchical caste system? Why didn’t you mention it even once?” Taking a cue from his question, an African scholar asked about the so-called “Afro-Dalits” and their religious pilgrimages. I will stop the story here, however interesting the plot may have become. The readers may be curious about my responses to these questions. But they do not concern this essay.

Initially, I felt a strong emotion of treachery from a fellow countryman, whom I had shown the city a few minutes before. I do not know if he knew that Itihāśa traditions are designed to take dharma to the masses, cutting across identitarian boundaries. I do not even know that he ever went on a pilgrimage. Even if he did, I do not know in which tīrtha-sthāna his or someone’s caste (whatever this term means) was asked for. What caught my attention was the ironic fact that in a conference on Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Practices, an Indian scholar failed to make sense of his own deśa-kāla outside of a hegemonic narrative that did not concern the phenomenon being discussed. That phenomenon being the “evil hierarchical caste system,” in the words of the questioner.

After the session, a young South African scholar asked me about the question asked by the “Indian fellow.” She was confused about his loyalty to his culture and intentions. She mentioned that culture has problems but should not stop anyone from discussing its merits. However, I thought that the problem was much deeper and complex. And my mind directly went to the works of S. N. Balagangadhara and his students.

In the edited work ‘Western Foundations of the Caste System.’ S. N. Balagangadhara argues that the colonial construct of “the caste system has no existence outside of the Western experience of India.” I could get that ‘colonial consciousness’ is at play here. The Indian questioner might never have witnessed this “caste system” in Sabrimala, Prayagraj, or any other tīrtha if he took one because he did not give any particular example. Still, for him, the Indian experiential realm of tīrtha had to make sense within the framework of the caste system. S. N. Balagangadhara, in ‘Reconceptualising India Studies,’ also points out that “colonialism denies the colonized peoples and cultures their own experiences; it makes them aliens to themselves; it actively prevents descriptions of their own experiences except in terms defined by the colonizers.” I witnessed, firsthand, how the acceptance of European descriptions of India as “scientific” prevents us from accessing our own culture and experience. We forget how to define our realities/experiences in our own terms, languages, and metaphors. Social sciences do that to students.

I had once heard an adage that ‘jāti kahī nahī jātī’ (jāti is omnipresent). But does that apply to the sense of past emanating from the intricate network of Indian sacred geography? Once, historian Dharampal was travelling somewhere on the Indian railways. His bogey had a group of Hindu pilgrims. He inquired about their journey, place of residence, etc., and was surprised to know they belonged to different jāti groups. They travelled, sat side by side, cooked, and ate together. He got curious because the “evil hierarchical caste system” was missing from that Indian experience. A pilgrim answered quickly, “tīrath me jāti nahī hotī (there is no jāti in pilgrimage).” In all its crispness and clarity, that answer shook him to his core. He believed himself to be a practising Hindu but did not know such a common cultural truth. This story was my answer to his question.

This experience was a clear demonstration of the fact that the colonial descriptions of India rule the mindscapes of educated Indians (in so many ways) even when these descriptions go against their own lived experience. Though tīrath me jāti nahī hotī, it was indeed surprising to know that in Indian Academia jāti kahī nahī jātī.

।।श्रीरामदूतम् शरणम् प्रपद्ये।।

रामजन्मभूमि प्राणप्रतिष्ठा (22 जनवरी 2024) के समय मैं एक सप्ताह के लिए अयोध्या जी में था। हिंदू पुनर्जागरण आंदोलन की ऐतिहासिक घड़ी! उसी समय मानव स्वभाव की विचित्रता, सांसारिक वितृष्णा, हिंदू सेवाभाव, एवं भारतीय संस्कृति की अक्षुण्णता के साथ-साथ परिवर्तनीय पक्ष जैसे कई आयामों को देखने, समझने तथा अनुभूत करने का सौभाग्य मिला। बहुत सारे अविस्मरणीय अनुभव उन दिनों घटे। ऐसा ही एक अनुभव इस लेख के माध्यम से साझा कर रहा हूँ। यह अनुभव किसी का आलोचनात्मक वृतांत जान पड़ सकता है, परंतु ऐसा नहीं है। इस पर चर्चा बाद में करेंगे। पहले अनुभव पर ही आते हैं।

एक दिन प्रातः उठकर हमने सीधा हनुमानगढ़ी के लिए प्रस्थान किया। संभतः मंगलवार था। प्रसाद हेतु मिठाई खरीदी। पंक्ति में लगे। भीड़ थी, पर हनुमानगढ़ी की दृष्टि से कम ही थी। जैसे ही मै और मेरा सहयात्री गर्भगृह के सामने पहुंचे, एक बूढे़ बाबा दिखे। श्री हनुमत् के बिल्कुल सामने प्रसाद की अभिलाषा में खड़े थे। दिखने में वह कुछ निर्धन जान पड़ते थे परंतु चरित्र से अपार धनाढ्य। बहुत विनम्र थे। हम देख रहे थे कि वह सामने खड़े पुजारी से प्रसाद मांग रहे थे। पुजारी 21–22 वर्ष का एक नवयुवक था। बड़े विकलभाव से वह लगभग 15–20 सेकंड तक स्नेहसिक्त वाणी में प्रसाद मांगते रहे। वह पुजारी उनको सुनकर भी अनजान बन रहा था। एक उल्लेखनीय दर्प था उसके चेहरे पर। जो भी मिठाई का डिब्बा लाता, वह उसमें से कुछ मिठाई निकालकर रख लेता और बाकी भक्तों को लौटा देता। आश्चर्य की बात है कि उसने उन बूढ़े बाबा को प्रसाद ही नहीं दिया। धक्के खाते-खाते अंत में वह हार मानकर भक्तों की भीड़ में लुप्त हो गए।

दर्शनोपरांत हम उनके पीछे-पीछे ही चले और सोचा कि उनको प्रसाद देते हैं। भीड़ से निकलते ही हमने उन्हें ढूँढ़ने का प्रयास किया पर वे नहीं मिले। उनका चेहरा मैं कभी नहीं भूल सकता। उनकी भाव-भंगिमा। कितनी सात्त्विक तृष्णा थी वह। जुड़े हुए हाथ। मानो कि उनके पूरे जीवन की सार्थकता उसी प्रसाद में लिपटकर आएगी। वह प्रसाद जो बजरंगबली के चरणों में पड़ा था। विनय की मूर्ति अंजनिपुत्र। वही जो मर्यादापुरुषोत्तम के अनन्य भक्त थे।

क्या आवश्यकता थी उनको उस मिठाई के टुकड़े की! शास्त्र कहते हैं कि हर देवता हमारे भीतर ही विद्यमान एक संभावित शक्ति का द्योतक होता है। जो दारुण भक्तिभाव एवं अपार बुद्धिकौशल के साथ विनयशीलता बजरंगबली देते हैं वह तो उन बूढ़े बाबा में पहले से ही थी। वह नहीं दिखी तो उस युवक में जो भौतिक रूप से तो भगवान के इतना निकट था यद्यपि आध्यात्मिक रूप से कितनी दूर!

इस अनुभव कथन में किसी व्यक्ति अथवा समुदाय की कमियों की ओर संकेत नहीं है। हर समय, स्थान अथवा समुदाय में सभी प्रकार के व्यक्ति होते हैं। और तो और यह भारतीय संस्कृति ही नहीं, अपितु मानव मात्र की कहानी है। धर्म मार्ग से च्युत व्यक्ति असंवेदनशील होता जाता है। अपने परिवेश से उन्मूलित होकर — आत्म उन्मूलित — जहां हवा ले जाए, बह जाता है। यह कोई एक अनुभव नहीं है। ऐसे कितने ही अनुभव सहस्रों भक्तों को न जाने कितने ही बड़े-बड़े प्रतिष्ठित मंदिरों में होते हैं। सरकारी नियंत्रण हो अथवा न हो, बाज़ारीकरण की आंधी में परंपरा के बहुत सारे वटवृक्ष अपनी जड़ों से उखड़ रहे हैं। इससे कैसे निजात पाएं? धर्मसम्मत जीवन जी सकते हैं। वही तो है हमारे हाथ में। अपना आचरण ठीक रखें? बहुत बड़ी चुनौति है। दिशा कहां से मिले? समाज में भी लोककल्याण के उद्देश्य से न जाने कितनी दिव्य आत्माएं, अनामिकता भाव से, प्रयासरत हैं। कोई शक्ति तो उनको भी प्रेरित रख ही रही है।

ऐसा कहते हैं कि चिरंजीवी हनुमान जी आज भी हमारे ही बीच घूमते हैं- ‘यत्र यत्र रधुनाथ कीर्तमन् तत्र तत्र कृतमस्तकाञ्जलीम्।’ वह हमें देखते भी होंगे। कुछ गलत कर रहे हों तो रोकते भी होंगे। जहां-जहां रघुनाथ का कीर्तन होगा वहां-वहाँ तो वे आते ही होंगे। 22 जनवरी 2024 के आसपास श्रीरामदूत कहां होंगे इसका अनुमान लगाना कोई बहुत कठिन कार्य नही है। हो सकता है कि प्रसाद खाने के लिए भी कहीं अपने ही मंदिर चले गए हों। ‘वाष्पवारि परिपूर्ण’ लोचनों से प्रसाद मांगा भी हो। पर मिला नहीं। सोचने का विषय है कि इसमें किसकी हानि हुई।

कितने अभागे होते हैं वे व्यक्ति जो प्रभुसेवा से चूक जाते हैं। कितने जन्मों के बाद ऐसा सुअवसर आता होगा। न जाने फिर कब अवसर मिलेगा! मैं भी न जाने कितनी बार चूका हूँगा। कितनी बड़ी आत्म-प्रवंचना रही होगी वो! आत्म-आरोपित अभिशाप! कहा था ना — यह किसी और की आलोचना नहीं है। किसी भी हृदय-विदारक घटना को थोड़ा अधिक टटोलने पर सब कुछ अपने ऊपर ही आ जाता है। गलतियाँ तो अपने से भी असंख्य होती हैं। तभी तो औरों में दिखती हैं। पं. हजारी प्रसाद द्विवेदी (‘पुनर्नवा’) लिखते हैं कि ‘सेवा की अपेक्षा से ही संसार की आधी समस्याएँ हैं।’ अपेक्षा तो सभी करते हैं। लेखक यहां सेवाभाव की उपेक्षा पर संकेत कर रहा है। इससे उपजे आध्यात्मिक बोझ की असह्यता को इंगित कर रहा है। उस आत्यंतिक भार को किसी खच्चर-घोड़े पर लादा भी नहीं जा सकता। क्या कर सकते हैं? बस एक व्याकुल प्रार्थना — हे नाथ, मेरे नाथ, मैं आपको भूलूं नहीं।

Bhūmikā: The Reader’s Foundations

A few years back, I was writing a book on the early history and culture of Kashmir. While conceptualising its conclusion, I discussed it with a mentor of mine, who was also my M.Phil. supervisor - Dr J. P. Singh.1

I had recently gone through multiple primary historical sources that record the destruction of high culture in Kashmir by barbaric forces, and I was disheartened. The once-celebrated fountainhead of knowledge of grammar, poetics, literature, philosophy, history, architecture and politics was turned into a wasteland of ignorance, bigotry and terrorism. A blooming civilisation had been violently uprooted. In the words of Jonarāja, ‘शालिनाम् शलभैरिव’ – “Like locusts upon the rice crops.”

As we were discussing the conclusion of the work (which I have not yet completed), Dr Singh confidently suggested that a Hindu writer should never end their work on a pessimistic note. We believe in cyclical creation. Time changes. People change. Civilisations rise, fall and rise again. “Do not limit your timeframe to your own lifetime,” he said. “Things may look grim now, but when you are undertaking civilisational studies, you must think in terms of civilisational timeframes,” he added.

I loved the perspective. It makes sense to remain hopeful, even if life appears to be going downhill. After all, we can only go upward from rock bottom. The anxiety of one-life metaphysics should not bother the Hindu imagination if the first principles are intact.

I started judging authors by this standard. I usually dislike fiction that ends with no hope in sight. I am more forgiving of non-fiction and its bleak conclusions if I gain some profundity.

It is with this ideational background that I picked up ‘The Trial of Tenderness’, the English translation of the 1951 Telugu original ‘Parīkṣā’, authored by ‘Kavisamrat’ Vishwanadha Satyanarayana.2 I had read the English translations of his two other short novels a few years ago and loved them.3 I hated it when the stories ended. It is one of those works which you enjoy so thoroughly that you want it to continue forever. This was the secondary background with which I started reading ‘The Trial of Tenderness’.

The Storyline

‘The Trial of Tenderness’ is a story of a village family struggling to make ends meet. What adds to their hardships is the quintessential lower-middle-class hope that getting the two sons – Gopālam and Sūryam – the best (beyond their budget) education will solve their money problems forever. This is what Vishwanadha terms the ‘hope against hope’ of some people. He writes:

“Such a desire is present in the hearts of all people. If only such a desire were absent, this world would be much happier than it now is. Let us keep the matter of such a desire aside. There is no proper inquiry into the nature of education and the possible employment opportunities. Everyone must get educated. Let us agree that one must get educated, and therefore study, for the sake of knowledge. But, are not we studying for the sake of getting a job? That job is found to be of multiple kinds. Not everyone gets to do every kind of job. One does not get a job just on account of studying. In such a case, one must study only to acquire knowledge. One must pay money upfront and study, to acquire knowledge. In the instance that one is not able to pay money, how should one acquire that knowledge? Should one acquire such knowledge even when one is starving for food? And is that knowledge – history, geography or civics?”

The reader can notice a profound comment on the futility of the modern Indian education system. Viswanadha adds a jeering analogy:

“When one develops a sickness, then one must be under medication either till the sickness is cured or till one succumbs to it. English education is like that. One must keep on studying at least till one fails thrice in the school final.”

As the story progresses, the family’s hardships grow proportionately. The education of the boys continues; two sisters are married; a major chunk of the farmland is sold off for their dowry; and then Gopālam’s father passes away. The responsibility of the whole family falls on the shoulders of the elder Gopālam because Sūryam becomes a vagabond and rarely visits home. Around the same time, a brother-in-law of Gopālam also dies. The widowed sister, Śyamala, is added to the dependents of Gopālam. Viswanadha asks: “Is it possible for one to imagine a broken pot breaking again?” It seems it can break again.

Gopālam keeps on looking for jobs. Despite continuous failures, he continues his studies with the help of his other brother-in-law. Gopālam could not pass the English and maths exams despite many attempts. His struggles knew no bounds. His mother suffered and suffered, in hope, until she died. His widowed sister does well in her studies with his help. She gets stable employment and moves to another town with the third (still bachelor) sister. The whole story spirals down to the conclusion when Gopālam commits “suicide”.

I have not mentioned anything about the theme of the story yet. The storyline is fixated on many trials of tenderness for Gopālam. The title of the novel is what sets the tone. Gopālam is the protagonist with a tender heart. He is concerned for other people’s well-being. He takes responsibility for his family after his father passes away, while his brother goes wherever his heart desires. While he struggles with education, which adds to his sense of guilt, Sūryam has no qualms about leaving studies, and he is good at it. Gopālam gets entangled in property feuds and familial commitments, while Sūryam lives a hedonistic life and becomes a famous artist. He loses everything to live up to his duties, while the vagabond Sūryam gets his “share” of the property in the end anyway.

The author refers to the people with soft and tender hearts as “the touchstone of the world,” for “the wickedness of the world, the wrongful deeds of the world, the bad behaviour of the world all these get exposed by the presence of and established in such a person.”

Nevertheless, he commits “suicide” at the end, and that is a mahāpātaka. It cannot be justified by any means. Even the novel discusses the ills of suicide and how it cannot be a recourse for anyone. Yet it concludes with the following words:

While Reflecting on My Reflections

While reflecting on my reflections, I tried to conceptualise this novel from the perspective of ‘anomic suicide’ of Émile Durkheim (Suicide, 1897). In the modern industrial age, with the sudden breakdown of societal norms and expectations, individuals witness the problem of infinite desire. When society’s regulatory power breaks down (anomie), the societal cap on desires is lifted. Our desires become infinite, and because infinite desires can never be satisfied, we are plunged into a state of chronic frustration, disillusionment, and despair. Durkheim argues that anomic suicide becomes more of a social fact in a modern, individualistic society rather than a mere psychological issue.

Modernity, for India, has been such a phenomenon. The rapid economic and technological changes that India witnessed with the arrival of Western modernity uprooted the institutional apparatus that made the cultural world of the natives a breathing entity. Viswanadha constantly discusses the modern changes and their implications on traditional institutions and norms. The norms and institutions that had been beneficial in maintaining societal harmony in the pre-modern past suddenly became overtly oppressive when the overarching incentive structure was uprooted by modernity. Furthermore, he explicitly illustrates the unbounded desire characteristic of modern society, as discussed earlier.

I made up my mind that the “suicide” of Gopālam could be understood through Durkheim’s theory. Moreover, I believed that ‘Parīkṣā’ was an attempt to present Durkheim’s thesis in a narrative form.4

Still, I was not happy with the ending. I am aware of the fact that we are a part of the modern world now. A world which has been created by the much-maligned West and its colonial heritage. It is a world which is characterised by material abundance, cultural homogenisation and drastic changes. Despite its merits, it leads to its own kind of problems. In the absence of powerful cultural institutions and any immediate social security net other than the Leviathan state, an individual’s (the sole God of modernity) downfall is an abyss.

Still, “suicide” cannot be a legitimate response to the challenges of modernity. It is the least I expected from an author of Viswanadha’s stature. I thought that, while being super-aware of them, he surrendered to the systemic ills of modernity. The conclusion of the novel seemed like a surrender. Hence, it seemed like a commentary on Durkheim’s work. I was so wrong.

Beyond “Suicide”: Prāyopaveśā

I messaged Shri Pranava Kumar Vasishta ji, who co-translated the original Telugu novel into English. He was kind enough to guide me towards something essential. Something that I had overlooked in the text, i.e., the use of the analogy of Aja Mahārāja in understanding ‘Trial of Tenderness’; to take recourse to the Upapatti Liṅga5. Let me reproduce it in Satyanarayana’s own words:

“In this world, there are a number of people whose wives pass away before they do. The father of Daśaratha Mahārãia was Aja Mahārāja. The name of his wife was Indumati Dēvi. When she passed away, Aja Mahārāja could not bear the grief of her loss and he died drowning into the Gangã-Sarayū Sangama. Daśaratha Mahārāja died being unable to bear the grief of separation from his son. In this world, how many instances do not we find where the fathers continue to live even after the death of their sons? The nature of certain specific individuals in the world is extremely soft. The ways of the world must be devised keeping such soft-hearted individuals as the anchors. Distinguishing between dharma (~virtue) and adharma (~vice) is to be done anchoring around such tender-hearted persons. The classification of the sense of good and bad is to be instituted with the response of such tender-hearted individuals as the measure. Not on the basis of the rest of the common folks in the world.”

Viswanadha, by the power of suggestion, gives the synopsis of the novel in this paragraph. The profound vulnerability may arise from exceptional tenderness and is not incompatible with strength or nobility. This explained the difference between suicide and what is called Prāyopaveśa. Pranava Ji illumined that “the conditions under which Prāyopaveśa does not become Ātmahatyā is a key point in Dharmaśāstra (tradition).” “To understand the ending,” he added, “pay attention to the Aja Mahāraja - Indumatī Devi story carefully.”

‘Ātmahatyā’ is the Sanskrit translation of ‘suicide’. Then what is Prāyopaveśa? Who were Aja Mahāraja and his wife Indumatī Devi? Why is their story important for understanding this novel? The story, in the 8th Canto of Raghuvaṃśa, goes like this…

This is where the text transitions from raw romance to the fine legalities of Dharmaśāstra. Kālīdasa hints that Aja terminates his life via Prāyopaveśa (fasting unto death at the confluence of the holy Sarayu and Ganges rivers). The prompt highlights a crucial debate in ancient Indian philosophy: Why is this distinct from suicide (Ātmahatyā)?

In Dharmaśāstra, Ātmahatyā is heavily condemned as a sin because it is typically driven by impulsive frustration, anger, escapism, or emotional distress while one still has worldly duties left unfulfilled. It disrupts the natural karmic cycle. Your debts remain unfulfilled. The negative karma will naturally become Prārabdha in the next life. The vicious cycle would not end.

Conversely, Prāyopaveśa is recognised as a legitimate, highly regulated spiritual departure under explicit conditions:

• Completion of Dharma: The individual must have zero remaining worldly responsibilities. Aja waits years until Dasharatha is old enough to rule, thoroughly fulfilling his duties as a father and a king.

• Absence of Desire or Malice: It is not done out of a frantic urge to escape but rather a peaceful, total detachment from the material world. The mind is entirely focused on the divine or a higher transition.

• Public and Regulated: It is not done in secret darkness; it is a publicly declared vow, executed with ritual purity, usually by fasting quietly until the body naturally gives out.

Understanding the Ending

A myth re-enacts itself throughout varying deśa-kāla. It is not a fictional story. In its profundity, it may be truer than any historical facts. It helps us to embrace the complexities of life without dumbing it down. The narrative exists as an ever-present potentiality.6

When you look closely at the ending of Aja’s life through this lens, his death is not a weak surrender to despair (Ātmahatyā). Instead, it is a masterclass in balancing the two. He preserves the ultimate tenderness of his heart by remaining completely faithful to his love for Indumatī. Yet he respects the cosmic law by staying alive just long enough to discharge his duties, eventually departing via the sanctified path of Prāyopaveśa.

‘The Trials of Tenderness’ is a contemporary retelling of the ākhyāna of Aja in Raghuvamśa. Gopālam is the protagonist who endures all the trials of tenderness but never turns bitter. He fulfilled all his duties and then undertook the vrata of Prāyopaveśa.

‘The Trials of Tenderness’ is not a story with a dead end, as I thought. It does not merely sensitise us towards the hardships of modern human life so that we do not feel alone in our failures and frailties. It is a narrative of endurance, perseverance, Dharma-Parāyaṇatā, and, above all, the indispensability of nourishing a tender heart, despite countless trials and hopeless suffering. Most importantly, it sows the seed of the satya in the reader’s heart that it is the ways of the world (behaviours, practices, beliefs and policies) that are to be judged with reference to the tender-hearted ones and never the other way around.

जहाँ हिन्दी आए लुक-छुप मिलने ,
तहाँ कोई नयन न पाएँ देख ,
उस मिलन की बेला, घुप्प अंधेरा
पग बढ़ें अबाधित मुझको देख।

मुझे पता है कि बहुत हिन्दी झाड़ने पर कॉर्पोरेट परिवेश में आपको गंभीरता से नहीं लिया जाता। विशुद्ध व्यवहारिकता के नाम पर ही सही, मैं भी आज-कल पाँच वाक्य बोलने पर यह प्रयास कर ही लेता हूँ कि छठा अंग्रेज़ी में बोलूं।1 विशुद्ध व्यवहारिकता के ही कारण मेरे छोटे भाई समान एक सुहृद् को मैनें कईं बार कार्यालय में मेरा परिचय “ही इज़ अर्जुन” कराते सुन लिया है। अपराध उसका नहीं है। अंग्रेज़ी में “भैया” के लिए कोई सहज शब्द ही नहीं है। उस पर हिन्दी सबके सामने मिलने आती नहीं।

कुछ समय से प्रकाशन संबंधी एक नए प्रकल्प में सहभागी हुआ हूँ। इसी बहाने आज-कल लिखा-पढ़ी के कार्य ने द्रुतगति पकड़ी है। पर साथी बुद्धिजीवी कहते हैं कि अंग्रेज़ी में लिखने से अधिक पाठक मिलते हैं। और तो और अंग्रेज़ी अब अभिजात — वाम अथवा दक्षिण — वर्ग की बौद्धिक भाषा बन चुकी है। यद्यपि कुछ बड़ा करना है तो इसमें लेखन ही समझदारी प्रतीत होता है। तथापि मेरे अस्तित्व के जिन अज्ञात अंधेरों में आ कर मुझसे हिन्दी मिलती है, क्या वहाँ कभी अंग्रेज़ी पहुँच पाएगी? ऐसा नहीं है कि मैंने अंग्रेज़ी को वहाँ पहुँचाने का प्रयास नहीं किया। मेरा विश्वास कीजिए, मैं झूठ भी बोलता हूँ, पर अभी नहीं बोल रहा हूँ।

मैनें लम्बे समय तक केवल अंग्रेज़ी साहित्य पढ़ा। अधिकतर आधुनिक भारतीय छात्रों की भांति मैं भी अपने पाठक-मन को तुष्ट करने के लिए भारतीय भाषाओं को तज कर अंग्रेज़ी पुस्तकें ही पढ़ता था। ये तो भला हो मेरे एक शुभचिंतक का जिन्होंने मुझे हजारीप्रसाद द्वीवेदी कृत ‘चारु चन्द्रलेखा’ पढ़ने को दे दी। उसको निपटाते ही मैं ‘अनामदास का पोथा’ भी पढ़ गया। मुझे आभास हुआ कि अंग्रेज़ी में पढ़ा अधिक्तर साहित्य तो अधकचरा था।2

अब मेरे मस्तिश्क मरु में गाज गिरी कि मेरे पुस्तक संग्रह में जितनी अंग्रेज़ी की पुस्तके हैं हिन्दी की तो उसकी 5 प्रतिशत भी नहीं हैं। कुछ समय पश्चात एक और शुभचिंतक ने दिल्ली में एक पुस्तक लिखने के लिए आमंत्रित किया। उन्होंने स्पष्ट कहा, ‘हिन्दी में लिखो।’ उधार देके लेपटॉप भी खरीदवा दिया। दो सप्ताह में मैं हिन्दी टंकण भी सीख गया। फोन में हिन्दी शब्दकोश भी डाउनलोड कर लिया। अब कोई बहाना नहीं चल सकता था।

एक ही माह में मुझे पता चला कि मैं बहुत अच्छी हिन्दी लिखता हूँ। दूसरा, मेरी अंग्रेज़ी पर पकड़ अच्छी नहीं, बस मेरे आस-पास वालों की तुलना में ठीक-ठाक है। तीसरा, अच्छी हिन्दी लिखने के लिए मुझे बहुत बुद्धि नहीं लगानी पड़ती। स्वयमेव …

झूठ नहीं बोलूँगा, उसका विश्वास जीतने में मुझे थोड़ा समय तो लगा। तत्पश्चात सहजता की गंगा ही बह गई। अंग्रेज़ी आंटी से अलग, हिन्दी बिना किसी लाग-लपेट के आती है। सरल-सतत-सरस। कोई आडंबर नहीं। कोई संकुचन नहीं होता उसकी चाल में — अबाधित।

कभी-कभी सोचता हूँ कि यह अभिसार कितने दिन और चलेगा? फिर सोचता हूँ चले कितने भी दिन, मुझे क्या! अब तो अभिसार में ही आनंद है। वैसे भी तुम्हारी निष्पाप चंचलता को अतिराजनैतिक समाज अश्लील चपलता समझ बैठेगा। तुम्हारे दिग्दिगांत गमन पर प्रश्न करेगा। तुम पर बंधन डालने हेतु ये ताक पर ही रहते हैं। अभी के लिए इनके मुँह नहीं लगते हैं।

मैं तो यही चाहता हूँ कि बस तुम मेरे पास आती रहो, लुक-छुप ही सही। मेरी लेखन क्रिया में, भाव-विनिमय में, प्रणय-पीड़ा में, बौद्धिक विलास में। उन घुप्प अंधेरों में — मुझे स्वयं से मिलाने। मिलन की उत्सुकता में कुछ थिरकती-सी हुई। ढीले से परिधान में पैर मेरी ओर अबाधित बढ़ाते हुए। मेरी अभिसारिका।3

Decoding the Title

Metro here refers to the Delhi Metro, which is the background of this story.

Baddie Ji is a person who identifies as a goodie (which she also is).

Paramparā-Bodha is a Sanskrit blended word which roughly translates to ‘tradition-consciousness’. It denotes an individual’s deep awareness, practice, and intellectual grasp (optional) of their cultural, religious, or literary roots inherited in an uninterrupted succession (ancestral and/or Guru-Śiṣya-based). The author wants readers to keep in mind that ‘tradition’ in the Indian context means predominantly performative or practice-based entities, unlike the primarily ideological modern Western traditions without praxis. This distinction signifies that a paramparā is lived as an indivisible aspect of life, rather than merely being believed in or used as a source of pride.

The author will not try to knit these seemingly unrelated terms into an intricate tapestry of profound meaning. I am narrating a story, a story based on satya (so the author claims), even if lacking facts. The “moral of the story” is for the readers to derive, if they find one (or more). I am not here to preach (at least this time), as I have a lot to learn.

The Story

I was travelling somewhere through the Delhi Metro. I was not alone. As we boarded the train, I pulled out a book from my bag and started reading. Baddie Ji was standing beside me. She was slaying effortlessly, as always. I was not paying much attention. I was busy reading.

Two stations later. She moved closer to the door. I followed. I asked the reason through an upward head movement. She said that it is more spacious here. Someone in the seats might have been staring. I looked back for predatory eyes but found none.

The book was against my face again. The metro stopped at a station. A lot of people stood up to leave. We sat in the corner seats. My mind was again fixated on the book. I stole a glance or two in between. Given the amount of travel I have to do, I am not easily disturbed by “distractions” (good, bad or exquisite).

She playfully put her right hand on my wrist – palms facing upwards. My attention was on the text. She held my hand. I smiled, cherished a momentary look at her smol hands and started reading again.

Her stop came before me. We bade farewell. She got off.

Eyes shifted to the book again.

I realised that something had changed. The text was there. My eyes were fixated. I was mumbling the words. But something was missing.

The mind had gone out the metro door with Baddie Ji.

I tried hard to concentrate on the stories of “Malaysian disease” intervention in Indonesia, but Naipaul Ji’s charm faded instantly. Please don’t misunderstand me. This is not a comment on his writing. He is an unparalleled genius. The eyes were looking at the text of ‘Among the Believers’, but the words were not making sense. The fault lay somewhere else.

On the pages of the book, I saw the doe eyes, the minuscule bindi, the puffed-up cheeks, the fake nose ring (sans any nose piercing because “it is a painful process”), the round earrings full of hearts I had gifted two days back, the oversized black T-shirt, bell-bottomed jeans that fit perfectly, the giant hairband, and that flowery scent that signals ‘comfort’.

I started thinking about her when she left. On the other hand, in her presence, the thought-function did not exist. While she was there, she existed as a living presence. I did not feel the subtlest need to entertain any separate thoughts or feelings about her. The mind was not disturbed when she held my hand. It was not disturbed when she moved towards the door. She was there, and her thought was not. There was nothing to claim and nothing to lose.

The problem, as I made sense of it, was simply that she was there earlier, and now she is not. Separation bred alienation of mind and existence.

The story will not end on a sad note. There might have been a sad climax if there had been no connection, continuity or commitment. The discomfort was momentary; the bond is not if nurtured and worked on (though it is hard).

I now stop writing happily with the certainty that I will meet her again. Namaste.

कुछ माह पूर्व इण्डिक अकादमी द्वारा आयोजित ‘महाभारत मास्टरक्लास’ में प्रा. विश्व अद्लूरी ने एक प्रश्न किया। हिंदू धर्म में कर्म का सिद्धांत प्रधानता रखता है। अपने कर्मों का फल मानव को स्वयं भोगना पड़ता है। अतः हम अपने कर्मों का फल जीज़स को समर्पित नहीं कर सकते। तो कृष्ण को कैसे कर सकते हैं? उनका संकेत ईसाइयत में ‘ओरिजिनल सिन’ के सिद्धांत और भगवद्गीता में समर्पण के संदेश की ओर था। विद्यार्थियों के कुछ तुक्कों के बाद उन्होंने बताया कि कृष्ण हमारी ही आत्मा में विद्यमान हैं। वह हमारे अस्तित्व की उत्कृष्टतम संभावना के रूप में सदैव हमारे भीतर ही उपस्थित हैं। यही कारण है कि अपने कर्म कृष्ण को समर्पित करना किसी ‘अन्य’ को समर्पित करना नहीं होता।

यदि कृष्ण अथवा हरि हमारे भीतर विद्यमान हैं तो फिर दिखते क्यों नहीं? कोई यदि उनको देखना चाहे तो कैसे देख सकते हैं? भगवद्गीता के अनुसार बिना चित्त-शुद्धि के यह असंभव है। योगश्चितवृत्तिनिरोधः (पातञ्जली योगसूत्र, 1.2)। योग यानी मिलन। यह मिलन भी किन्हीं सर्वदा भिन्न सत्ताओं का नहीं होता। मूल में ऐक्य है। इसका अनुभूति-जन्य ज्ञान योग है। प्रत्यभिज्ञा है। आत्मसाक्षात्कार। चित्त की वृत्तियां अथवा अशुद्धियां योगज्ञान में बाधा बनती हैं। मुझ मूढ़ की कलम से बहुत बड़ी-बड़ी बातें हो गईं, पर शास्त्र यही कहते हैं। निम्नलिखित वृतांत योग-ज्ञान संग हरि दर्शन का वृतांत है। जिसके बिना हरि दर्शन संभव नहीं लगता।

NIT तुरुचिरपल्ली में एक अकादमिक आयोजन की तैयारिओं को लेकर मेरा इस वर्ष जनवरी में वहां प्रवास हुआ था। प्रातः सुजित एट्टा के साथ श्रीरंगम दर्शन को गया। दर्शन समय से थोड़े विलंब से पहुंचने के कारण पहले दिन दर्शन नहीं हो पाए। श्रीरामनुजाचार्य की समाधी पर सीस नवाया। कुछ देर ध्यान एवं हरिस्तुति इत्यादि करके पूर्वनिश्चित औपचारिक बैठकों का भाग बना और चल पड़ा कारैकल को। एक सप्ताह के तमिलनाडु एवं केरल प्रवास के बाद पुनः एक दिन के लिए तुरुचिरपल्ली आगमन हुआ। अब की बार तो मैंने दर्शन करने की ठान ही ली थी। आज सुजित जी को ब्रह्ममुहूर्त में बुलाया गया। उनकी बुलट पर सवार हो हम कावेरीमध्ये श्रीरंगम् द्वीप पर पहुंचे। कहना होगा कि मंदिर के भव्य गोपुरम् एवं दिव्य स्थापत्य के आगे नतमस्तक हुए बिना रहा नहीं जा सकता। बिना समय गंवाए दोनों भाई सीधा दर्शन की पंक्ति में लग गए। पंक्ति में लगे-लगे चित्त की वृत्तियों को रोकने का प्रयास कुछ भगवत्स्तुति पाठ द्वारा मैं करता रहा। लगभग डेढ़-दो घंटे में जैस-जैसे पंक्ति गर्भ-गृह के निकट पहुंचती रही, मेरा मन विच्छृंखल होता गया। मुझे पता चल रहा था कि ऐसा हो रहा है। मैंने कुछ प्रयास भी किए, परंतु विष्णुमाया की इच्छा कुछ और थी।

हम गर्भगृह पहुंचे। मैंने मूर्ति को अवश्य देखा, परंतु मुझे दर्शन नहीं हुए। श्रीरंगम् में भी पद्मनाभस्वामी की ही भांति अनंतशयी विष्णु मूर्ति है। मुझे अभी भी स्मरण है कि लगभग 8 वर्ष पूर्व मुझे पद्मनाभस्वामी दर्शन का सौभाग्य मिला था। वह अनुभव वैखरी-मध्यमा से सदा-सर्वदा परे था। दर्शन के समय एवं उपरांत मैं निशब्द, स्तब्ध एवं मौन रहा। मुझे पता ही नहीं चला कि क्या हो रहा है। मेरा कुछ होने का भाव एवं कुछ हो जाने की लालसा — दोनों उस मूर्ति में मानो समा गए हों। ऐसी अनुभूति मुझे पूरे भारत में कई देवस्थानों में हुई है। चौरासी मंदिर (चंबा), महाकाल ज्योतिर्लिङ्ग, शिवसागर (असम), बांके-बिहारी, श्रीरामजन्मभूमि इत्यादि। श्रीरंगम् में नहीं हुआ। अगले महीने उसी कार्यक्रम के समय मैं तिरुचिरपल्ली पहुंचा तो सुजित जी को पुनः दर्शन के लिए कहा। दो-दिवसीय कार्यक्रम के अगले दिन दोपहर में मदुरई-रामेश्वरम् जाने की योजना बनी। मैनें सोचा कि उसी दिन प्रातः श्रीरंगम् दर्शन को जाउंगा।

कार्यक्रम के उपरांत पता चला कि सुजित एट्टा दो दिन के लिए काम से कहीं जा रहे थे। मुझे पता था कि कोई न कोई कार्यकर्ता मुझे ले जा ही सकता है परंतु थकान के कारण मैनें सोचा कि मीनाक्षी अम्मन एवं रामेश्वरम् दर्शन तो करने ही हैं। इस बार श्रीरंगम् रहने देते हैं।

कार्यक्रम पूर्ण होते ही, कार्यकर्ता अनुभव कथन के पश्चात, NIT तुरुचिरपल्ली के एक सनातक कार्यकर्ता ने कहा कि ‘मैं कल श्रीरंगम् में आपकी प्रतीक्षा करुंगा।’ बड़े उत्साह से उसने कहा कि ‘आपके दर्शन का पूरा दायित्व मुझपर।’ और तो और ‘इसीलिए मैं कल कक्षा में भी नहीं जाउंगा।’ मेरे हज़ार बार मनाने पर भी वह नहीं माना। भाई ने यहां तक कह दिया कि ‘एक घंटे में आपको मंदिर के सभी देवताओं के दर्शन करवाकर मुक्त कर दूंगा।’ फिर क्या था मैं ‘ना’ न कह सका। वैसे भी मुझे किसी अच्छे कार्य में ‘ना’ कहने में बहुत दिक्कत होती है। भले ही फिर मैं उसे रो-रोकर करूं। उस कार्यकर्ता का नाम योगज्ञानसंबंधन था। जो कि, उसी के अनुसार, शिव जी का भी नाम है। इस प्रकार मेरा योगज्ञान संग हरि दर्शन करना तय हुआ।

प्रातः NIT तुरुचिरपल्ली के एक शोधार्थी मनोज प्रभाकरण जी के संग मंदिर पहुंचा तो पता चला कि योगज्ञान की किसी मंदिर सुरक्षाकर्मी से मित्रता थी। बहुत जुगाड़ू लड़का था। दृढ़संकल्पी भी। हमें कहीं भी पंक्ति में नहीं लगना पड़ा। जहां सुरक्षाकर्मी मित्र के नाम से काम नहीं चला, वहां उसके मामाजी भाजपा के नेता बन गए। क्या पता हों भी!

मंदिर में उत्तर गोपुरम् से प्रवेश कर हमने सर्वप्रथम माँ रंगनायकी, श्रीदेवी एवं भूदेवी के दर्शन किए। वहीं ज्ञात हुआ कि अपना परिचय राष्ट्रीय स्वयंसेवक संघ अथवा अखिल भारतीय विद्यार्थी परिषद् से देने पर तमिल नाड़ु के मंदिरों में दर्शन करने के लिए अधिक समय मिलता है। योगज्ञान दर्शन से पहले हर पुजारी को मेरा परिचय देता चलता था। कोदण्ड राम मंदिर एवं रामानुजाचार्य समाधी दर्शन तक हम अन्नमय कोष को पार कर चुके थे। हर मंदिर में प्रसाद के रूप में खिचड़ी की बड़ी गेंद मिल रही थी। रामानुजाचार्य समाधी में पुजारियों द्वारा वैष्णव भक्ति काव्य ‘दिव्यप्रबंधम्’ का श्रवण प्रसाद भी पाया। भगवान् विष्णु को समर्पित यह रचना तमिळ भाषा में है।

यकायक ध्यान आज की भाषांतरण-संस्कृत्यांतरण बहस पर चला गया। औपनिवेषवाद के प्रभाव में एवं अपने ओछे हित साधने हेतु कुछ राजनेता बुद्धिजीवी यह प्रतिपादित करते हैं कि एक भाषा माने एक राष्ट्र/संस्कृति/जीवन पद्धति। इस इसाई मान्यता (बाबेल का शाप) के सेकुलर अवतार के वर्चस्व का दंश भारत आज भी झेल रहा है। हर तीर्थ में मैने इस आधुनिक विभेदकारी मान्यता की धज्जियां उड़ते देखीं हैं। भारतीय भाषाएं तोड़ती नहीं, जोड़ती हैं। आश्चर्य होता है कि भारतीय अकादमिया एवं राजनीति इतनी अंधी क्यों है?

रामानुजाचार्य जी की समाधी में केवल हिंदू ही जा सकते हैं। बाहर लगा बोर्ड बड़े-बड़े अक्षरों में इस बात को स्पष्ट कर देता है कि मलिक काफुर के जिहादी विध्वंस को अब तक भुलाया नहीं गया है। गंगा-जमुनी पितामह आमिर खुसरो ने उस बर्बर विध्वंस का महीमामंडन अपने अनुभव-जन्य यात्रा-वृतांत ‘खज़ाइनुल-फुतुह’ में किया है। मीनाक्षी अम्मन में भी इसी कारण से एक धोती पहने अंग्रेज़ युवक को दर्शन से रोका गया। वह उद्वेलित हो उठा। उसके हिंदू होने का उसके पास कोई प्रमाण नहीं था। नाईपॉल जी सही ही कहते हैं कि भारत एक घायल सभ्यता है। और मैंने अनुभव किया कि वह घाव अभी भरे नहीं हैं। ऐसा लगता भी नहीं कि जल्द ही भरेंगे क्योंकि कुरेदने वाले अभी भी कुरेद ही रहे हैं।

अंततोगत्वा हम हरि दर्शन को चले। इस बार हरिनाम केवल मेरी जिह्वा पर ही नहीं मन में भी था। जब हम हरिमूर्ति के समक्ष पहुंचे तो मुझे कुछ देवियों की मूर्ति दिखी। मैंने सर झुकाया। मुझे पता नहीं चला कब हम गर्भगृह में प्रवेश पा गए। इतनें में पुजारी जी ने विष्णु मूर्ति की ओर संकेत करते हुए दर्शन करवाये। विष्णुमाया के पीछे ही अनंतशयी विष्णु विराजमान थे। यद्यपि पिछली बार मैं उन्हें प्रसन्न नहीं कर पाया था। तथापि उन्होंने दर्शन नहीं करवाए। इस बार वैसा नहीं हुआ। लघु दर्शन करते ही हम गर्भगृह द्वार तक पहुंचे कि मैं वहां खड़ा हो गया। एक महिला पुलिसकर्मी मुझसे आगे बढ़ने का आग्रह कर रही थी। तभी योगज्ञान ने मेरा स्वयंसेवक होने का परिचय करवाया। मैंने पुनः गर्भगृह में प्रवेश किया। योगज्ञान साथ में था। इस बार दर्शन हुए।

पोस्टस्क्रिप्ट- मंदिर भमण के दौरान समय-समय पर योगज्ञान मेरे से किन्ही देवता के नाम, उनकी सवारी और उनकी किसी पौराणिक आख्यान के बारे में पूछता रहा। और हर सही उत्तर पर आश्चर्य करता रहा। योगज्ञान को IKS में आगे की पढ़ाई करने की इच्छा थी। बाहर आते समय मैंने पूछा कि आपकी IKS परीक्षा में मैं उत्तीर्ण हुआ? भाई ने प्रसन्नचित्त होकर अपना सिर ऊपर-नीचे हिलाया। मुझे ऐसा आभास हुआ कि उसकी दृष्टि में भी मैं सुपात्र सिद्ध हो गया था।

अपनी पी.एच.डी. कार्य के निमित्त मेरा दो बार हाजो जाना हुआ। गुवाहाटी से 32 किलोमीटर दूर यह नगर पञ्चतीर्थ के नाम से प्रख्यात है। उपरोक्त चित्र मैनें हाजो की अपनी प्रथम यात्रा के समय खींचा था। स्थान मदनाचल चोटी पर स्थित केदारेश्वर एवं कमलेश्वर धाम था। सीढ़ियां चढ़ते ही सामने केदार मंदिर है।

दाहिने हाथ थोड़ा आगे जाते ही बड़ा सुंदर सा, छोटा सा, कमलेश्वर मंदिर शिव कुण्ड के बगल में स्थित है।

कमलेश्वर महादेव के पुजारी एक वृद्ध ब्राह्मण थे जो कि केवल असमिया भाषा में ही संवाद कर सकते थे। बड़ी रुचि के साथ उन्होनें मुझे मंदिर का महात्म्य सुनाया। तिलक लगाया। जब दक्षिणा की बारी आयी तो मेरी जेब में केवल 10 रुपये थे। मैंने थाली में रख दिए। तत्पश्चात पंडित जी मुझे दोनों मंदिरों के मध्यस्थ सीढ़ियों से नीचे ले गए। वहीं पर चतुर्भुज पूर्णाङ्ग कालगणेश जी से मिलना हुआ।

बड़ी रमणीक मूर्ति थी। एक स्थानीय भक्त से पता चला कि यह असम के इकलौते चतुर्भुज पूर्णाङ्ग कालगणेश हैं। सर्पधारी गणेश को कालगणेश कहा जाता है। हाजो में ही एक और चतुर्भुज कालगणेश हैं पर वो पूर्णाङ्ग नहीं है। ऐसा नहीं है कि इससे भक्तों के भाव में कोई अंतर आता होगा। फिर भी बताने के लिए बता रहा हूँ।

पंडित जी ने खूब समझाने का प्रयास किया परंतु मुझ मूढ़मति को उनका कुछ समझ में नहीं आया। असमिया बोल रहे थे। बढ़िया दर्शन हुए। पूजा की गई। अब मुझे डर लग रहा था। मेरे पास दक्षिणा के लिए कुछ भी नहीं बचा था। इससे पहले आप मेरे बारे में यह धारणा बनायें कि मैं कंजूस हूँ। मैं बता देना चाहता हूँ कि मैं हाजो नगर, जो कि पञ्चतीर्थ नाम से विख्यात है, के पांचवे तीर्थ पर था। वहां आते-आते लक्ष्मी जी हयग्रीव माधव के चरणों में अपना स्थान पा गई थीं।

हयग्रीव, कामेश्वर, गणेश, केदारेश्वर एवं कमलेश्वर मिलकर पञ्चतीर्थ बनता है। हाजो पञ्चतीर्थ एक शांत एवं सुंदर नगर है। हाजो में शराब बेचने पर प्रतिबंध है। वहां की सबसे ऊंची चोटी गरुड़ाचल पर्वत पर पोआ मक्का नाम से एक सुफी मकबरा है। कहते हैं कि सूफी गियासुद्दिन ने मक्का की एक-चौथाई (पाओ या पोआ) मूर्तियां यहां पर तोड़ी थी। मक्का में पैगंबर ने 360 मूर्तियां तोड़ी थीं। एक लोकोक्ति यह भी है कि गियासुद्दिन मक्का से पाओ भर मिट्टी लेकर आए थे। जो भी हो योगिनी तंत्र (असम में रचित एक तांत्रिक ग्रंथ) इसी स्थान में एक शिव मंदिर का उल्लेख करता है जो कि आज वहां नहीं है। गरुड़ाचल का नामकरण ही श्रीकृष्ण सवारी गरुड़ भगवान् के चरण पड़ने के कारण हुआ था।

एक और रोचक तथ्य पढ़िए। मेरे एक साथी ने मुझे यह बताया कि जो भी प्रेमी जोड़ा हयग्रीव माधव आता है उनका विवाह कभी नहीं होता। वहीं गुवाहाटी स्थित उमानाथ के पुजारी ने बताया कि जो भी प्रेमी जोड़ा यहां दर्शनार्थ आते हैं उनका विवाह अवश्य होता है। जनहित में जारी। युगल पाठक सतर्क रहें।

वृतांत पर लौटने से पूर्व, झिझककर ही सही, कुछ कहना चाहता हूँ। मैं हाजो जाने से पहले ही कामाख्या दर्शन कर चुका था। शास्त्र कहते हैं ब्राह्मणं निन्दितं पापं ब्रह्महत्यां विनिर्दिशेत्। मैं अपने सर पाप नहीं लेना चाहता परंतु इतना अवश्य कहूंगा कि व्यापार केवल मंदिर के बाहर नहीं हो रहा था। मां कामाख्या के भैरव उमानाथ ब्रह्मपुत्र नदी के बीचो-बीच एक द्वीप पर विराजमान हैं। वहां भी मंदिर के भीतर मुझे ऐसा ही अनुभव हुआ।

अब नीलाचल से वापिस आते हैं मदनाचल पर्वत पर। गणपती जी के सामने वृद्ध पंडित जी ने थाली आगे बढ़ाई। मैंने बड़ा असहज होकर हाथ और सिर हिलाते हुए संकेत किया कि ‘कुछ नहीं है’। उनकी भाव-भंगिमा पर इस बात का कुछ भी प्रभाव नहीं पड़ा। पहले जैसे ही शालीनता से वह मुझसे बातें करते-करते ऊपर आ गए। समझ मुझे अभी भी कुछ नहीं आ रहा था। पर मैं सुनने का अच्छा नाटक अवश्य कर रहा था। समय-समय पर सर हिलाते हुए ‘होब-होब’, और अंत में ‘ठीक आसे’।

और तो और, पुजारियों की उदारता के संदर्भ में ऐसे ही अनुभव मुझे असम के हर मंदिर में हुए। ऊग्रतारा में तो एक दोपहर पहुंचते ही मुझे भण्डारा खाने के लिए बाध्य कर दिया गया। मैं भोजन करके आया था। उसपर भी थाली में दो सबज़ी, दाल चावल होते हुए भी 10 मिनट बाद बलिप्रसाद मछली और मटन भी लाया गया। लोहित स्थित (अरुणाचल प्रदेश) परशुराम कुण्ड स्नान करने गया तो एक रात वहीं रुका। यातायात की समस्या के कारण प्रातः बस पकड़वाने हेतु एक स्थानीय युवक की ड्यूटी लगाई गई। शुक्रेश्वर महादेव में तो गर्भगृह के अंदर कोई पण्डा होता ही नहीं है। वहां का शिवलिङ्ग इतना भव्य है कि उसे भीमाशंकर भी कहा जाता है। यदि आपने पूजा करवानी है तो किसी पुजारी से विनति कर सकते हैं।

तो कामाख्या में ही ऐसा क्यों? संभवतः इसीलिए क्योंकि लोभ मानव प्रवृत्ति है। जहां लोलची होने से लाभ हो वहां मानव का अधिक लालची होना स्वाभाविक है। इसका अर्थ यह नहीं कि शास्त्र लोभ करना सिखाते हैं। उलटा किसी पुजारी में लोभ परंपरा का ह्रास दर्शाता है।

मैंने अनुभव किया है कि ऐसे सभी मंदिर जहां पूरा समय भक्तों का तांता नहीं लगा रहता, वहां किसी पुजारी ने मुझसे आगे से पैसे नहीं मांगे। कितने ही दिव्य एवं पुरातन मंदिर, जैसे शिव दोल, दीर्घेश्वरी देवी, कूर्मेश्वर, ऊग्रतारा, मालिनिथान, हयग्रीव, या मेरा प्रिय शुक्रेश्वर। यही अनुभव मुझे भारत के अनेकों तीर्थक्षेत्रों में हुआ है। देव सेवा एवं शृंगार में रत सौम्य एवं गंभीर पुजारी। कोई छल-कपट नहीं। डॉ. दीपा दुरइस्वामी जी ने हिंदू मंदिर प्रबंधन पर ‘इण्डिका’ द्वारा आयोजिक ‘मास्टरक्लास’ में एक दृष्टांत प्रस्तुत किया था। वह इस प्रकार है:

मंदिर प्रबंधन से जुड़ी जितनी भी बौद्धिक अथवा भावनात्मक बहसें हैं, वो इस निबंध का विषय नहीं है। हिंदू मंदिरों में सेकुलर राज्य का किसी भी तरह का दखल अवाञ्छनीय है, आसुरीय है। फिर भी व्यापक मंदिर प्रबंधन सुधार अत्यावश्यक हैं।

इस निबंघ में मैं बस अपना अनुभव बता रहा हूँ कि लोकप्रिय मीडिया में हिंदू पुजारियों की जो नकारात्मक छवि कुछ दशकों में गढ़ी गई है वो बहुत कुछ बड़े मंदिरों के बुरे अनुभवों पर आधारित है। इनमें से लगभग सभी मंदिर वर्तमान में राजकीय नियंत्रण द्वारा संचालित हैं। वहीं असंख्य छोटे-बड़े मंदिरों में देव-सान्निध्य बनाये रखने के लिए निस्वार्थ पुजारी हमें मिलते हैं। ऐसे ही असंख्य उदाहरण विख्यात मंदिरों में भी होते हैं। कामाख्या में ही ऐसे कितने अनुभव मुझे हुए। निकट में ही स्थित तारा मंदिर के पुजारी से भी बहुत अच्छा संवाद हुआ था। उमानाथ में भी एक पुजारी से ऐसी ही भेंट हुई थी। उनकी चर्चा हम क्यों भूल जाते हैं?

यदि हम परंपरा से जुड़े कुछ लोगों की कोई बुराई बताने के फेर में अधिकतर की धर्मपरायणता को ढक देंगे तो हानी परंपरा की हुई या उन लोगों की? यदि सभी पुजारी लालची हैं तो मंदिर परंपराएँ बचाएँ ही क्यों? इससे भी बड़ा प्रश्न—यदि सभी पुजारी लालची हैं तो मंदिर परंपरा बची कैसे? कम से कम हिंदुओं को इन प्रश्नों पर स्पष्ट होना पड़ेगा। हिंदू मंदिर प्रबंधन सुधार पर कैसा भी चिंतन इस स्पष्टता के बिना अधूरा है।

जब मैं लगभग दो वर्ष बाद दूसरी बार हाजो गया तब भी मुझे वह वृद्ध पुजारी पुनः मिले। अपने धर्म में रत। सच कहूँ तो अलप-अलप (थोड़ी-बहुत) असमिया मैं समझता हूँ। पर उनको समझना आज भी दुर्निवार था। आयु उनकी 80 पार थी। पता चला कि मेरे साथ घूम रहे असमिया मित्र को भी उनका कहा कम ही समझ आ रहा था। तथापि मैंने उनसे कुछ प्रश्न - उनके तथा मंदिर के बारे में - विडिया रिकॉर्ड करने की इच्छा से पूछे। उन्होंने अपनी पोपली वाणी में उत्तर भी दिए। ये तो मैंने बाद में देखा कि उनके साक्षात्कार के समय विडियो तो बनी परंतु (माइक बंद होने के कारण) उनकी वाणी लुप्त हो गई। इसीलिए उन्होंने क्या कहा, यह मुझे आज स्मरण नहीं है।

मैं चाहता हूँ कि उनको निर्वाक करने का जो अपराध मुझसे भूल से हुआ वह कोई और जानबूझकर न करे। इसी आशा में, ऐसी असंख्य धर्मरत पुजारियों की अनसुनी कहानियों को समर्पित, उनका गूंगा साक्षात्कार मैं यहाँ संलग्न कर रहा हूँ।

2025 में पूर्णकुंभ में प्रयागराज जाना हुआ। एक शोध संगठन, जिसका मैं कार्यकर्ता हूँ, के निमित्त एक शोध प्रशिक्षण (इंटर्नशिप) की योजना बनी थी। चयनित छात्रों द्वारा कुंभ को अनुभूत करने एवं आगंतुकों के अनुभवों का दस्तावेजीकरण करना हमारा लक्ष्य था। मूलतः हम समझना चाहते थे कि एक इतना विहंगम आयोजन प्रति 12 वर्ष शताब्दियों से कैसे हो रहा है? कोई केंद्रीय संस्थागत ढांचा नहीं। कोई चर्च नहीं। तब से जब आधुनिक स्टेट नहीं था। एक सतत अविरल सांस्कृतिक त्रिधारा प्रवाह - कल्पवासी (एवं तीर्थयात्री), साधु एवं प्रबंधक - जो संयोगवश त्रिवेणी - गंगा, जमना एवं सरस्वती - पर ही आकर मिलते हैं। कोई बुलाता नहीं है। तंबु लगते हैं। नगर बसता है। मकर संक्रांती से महाशिवरात्री तक विश्व का सबसे बड़ा सम्मेलन होता है। बारह वर्ष में एक बार। उसके बाद? तत्पश्चात पूरा मैदान साफ। कोई मान ही नहीं सकता कि यहां कुछ दिन पूर्व कुंभ मेला का सागरीय विस्तार था।

हमने इंटर्नशिप के पहले चरण के अंतिम दिन (सेक्टर 13 या 14 के) एक कल्पवासी शिविर में प्रवेश किया। कल्पवासी कुंभ के समय, वहां रहकर साधु-सा जीवन जीते हैं। वे कुंभ एवं प्रतिवर्ष लगने वाले माघ मेले की आत्मा होते हैं। जब प्रशिक्षुओं का समूह छोटे समूहों में बंटा, तो हम तीन लड़के एक समूह में हो गए। दो शोधार्थी और एक स्नातक छात्र। अभी पहले ही कैंप में घुसे थे कि एक बूढ़ी अम्मा गोबर के उपले लेकर कैंप से बाहर निकलती दिखीं। हमने माइक तुरंत निकालते हुए, उनसे थोड़ा हाल-चाल पूछा। परिचय किया। बातचीत से पता चला कि 70 पार की बुढ़िया श्रीमती रुक्मणी जी स्वयं कल्पवासी नहीं थीं। अपनी बेटी के मायके वालों के साथ वहां निवास कर रही थीं और छोटे-मोटे काम में हाथ बटाती थीं। कल्पवास उसके परिजन कर रहे थे। वह निषाद समुदाय से थीं। उनके पिता जी गायक थे। परंतु इस बात से अधिक गर्व उन्हें इस बात पर था कि उनके किसी पूर्वज ने रामजी को गंगा पार करवायी थी।

अम्मा जी स्वयं भी गायन में विशेष रुचि रखती थीं। थोड़ी बातचीत हुई ही थी कि रुक्मणी जी ने हरिभजन आरंभ कर दिया। करती भी क्यों न! उन्होंने एक-दो भजन सुनाए और हमने अपना कैमरा चालू कर दिया (ये भी एक बीमारी ही है)। इससे वे कुछ असहज हो गईं, परंतु गायन जारी रहा। सहजता आती गई। और क्या सुंदर भजन था। सहज सुरीला देशज भजन। कोई जटिल सुर का आडंबर नहीं। केवल विशुद्ध भाव और लयबद्ध शब्द—चमत्कार। भजन समाप्त होते ही, माताजी ने हमें सस्नेह गले से लगाते हुए आशीर्वचन की वर्षा कर दी। और वह अबाध, अगाध, अकारण प्रेम एक प्रशिक्षु के नेत्रों से अश्रु बन झरने लगा। मेरे सामने एक वयस्क शोध छात्र बालक की तरह रो रहा था।

भजन के बोल थे: “राम-लखन दुनिया के दाता, लछमन तीर लगे पर बीता। हम जाने हम ही पर बीता, एक दिना सब ही पर बीता।” गीत के अनुसार भगवान शंकर, कृष्ण जी, चांद-सूरज, गंगा-जमना इत्यादि सभी पर कुछ न कुछ बीता, इसका उल्लेख हुआ। सभी ने कष्ट भोगे, पर हमें लगता है कि हम ही कष्ट भोग रहे हैं। सभी ने त्रासदि झेली। सोचने का विषय है कि लोक ने इस भजन के माध्यम से इतिहास-पुराण को तीर्थ-साधना पक्ष के इतर, किस संदर्भ में बिठाया है। आज के समाजशास्त्री जहां इन ग्रंथों में आज की सभी समस्याओं की जड़ खोजते नहीं थकते, वहां आम जनमानस को यह पुरातन कथाएं कितना ढांडस बंधाती रही हैं। मुझे नहीं लगता कि समाजशास्त्र यह समझना भी चाहता है कि भारतीय लोक अपनी भाषाओं, गीतों, नृत्यों, कथाओं एवं रीतियों को स्वयं कैसे समझता है। इसलिए उन पर जितने कम शब्द खर्च किए जाएं, उतना बेहतर होगा। हम रुक्मिणी देवी से ही कुछ समझने का प्रयास करते हैं।

मैनें अनुभव किया कि हमारे जीवन में जब भी अवसाद भरे क्षण आते हैं आत्मीय-जन साधारणतः ऐसे सुझाव देते हैं- “खुश रहना चाहिए।” “दुःखी रहकर क्या मिलेगा?” “कुछ नहीं होता।” “चिल करो।” बातें तो ये काम की हैं परंतु एक उद्विग्न मन इनको कैसे आत्मसात करे। त्रासदी का स्वभाव है कि वह अंधकार बन मानसपटल को घेर लेती है। ऐसा नहीं कि तब उजाला हो नहीं सकता। पर उजाला लाने की इच्छा भी मर जाती है। उदाहरण के लिए, यदि पाठक को कभी किसी हृदय-विदारक बैडी (10/10) से प्रेम हुआ हो। मैं गारंटी दे सकता हूँ कि प्रणय-पीड़ा से जूझते हुए आपके किसी मित्र ने आपको यह सुझाव पक्का दिया होगा कि “भूल जाओ उसे। बहुत आएंगी/आएंगे।” अवश्य आएंगी पर वो तो नहीं आएगी न। कैसे भूल जाए कोई समाज से चुराए उन क्षणों को, उन हृदय-भेदी दृष्टिपातों को, उन अभिसार की रातों को, अथवा उन सहज-सुखी भावानुभवों को। किसी आत्मीय-जन का देहांत तो इससे भी घोर त्रासदी है। त्रासदी अथवा कोई अत्यंत दुखद घटना किसी भी व्यक्ति, वस्तु अथवा परिस्थिती के संदर्भ में हो सकती है।

जब हम त्रासदी भोगते हैं तो कुछ खो जाने की पीड़ा होती है। जो हम इतनी तीव्रता में महसूस करते हैं, जो इतनी आत्यंतिक होती है, कि हमें लगता है कि यह तो किसी और के साथ घटा ही नहीं होगा। कहते हैं कुछ लोग सेडिस्ट होते हैं। अर्थात उन्हें लोगों को कष्ट में देखने पर आनंदानुभूति होती है। इनकी नैतिकता पर न जाते हुए, इससे मानव स्वभाव की एक गुत्थी तो खोल ही सकते हैं। मुझे लगता है कि सेडिस्ट लोग बहुत दुखी रहते हैं। अतः उनको यह जानकर संतोष होता है कि और लोग भी दुःखी हैं। कोई भी अकेला नहीं रहना चाहता। ‘एकला चलो रे’ का महावाक्य आमजनजीवन में कोई महत्व नहीं रखता। आपत्स्थिती में अवश्य रखता हो। मैं यह कहना चाहता हूँ कि जब हमें यह आभास होता है कि हमारे दुःख में हम अकेले नहीं हैं। और भी लोग हैं जो पीड़ा झेल रहे हैं या झेल चुके हैं, तो मन में ढांढस बंधता है। हमें थोथा ज्ञान या निरे शब्द कभी भी त्रासदी की पीड़ा से निजात नहीं दिला सकते।

अब सोचिए कि कोई आपसे यह कहे कि भाई, तुम तो हो ही कौन, राम-कृष्ण तक त्रासदी से नहीं बच सके। कृष्ण जी का तो जन्म ही जेल में हुआ। उनके सभी भाई-बहनों की जन्मते ही उनके सगे मामा द्वारा मार दिया गया। अंतिम समय में अपने सभी कुलदीपकों को एक-दूसरे की हत्या करते देखने की पीड़ा झेली। राम जी को तो जो भी प्रिय था उनको उसे खोना पड़ा। आजीवन - राज्य, पिता, पत्नी। जब पत्नी को युद्ध जीतकर वापिस भी लाए, तब फिर से त्यागना पड़ा। पूरा जीवन एक त्रासदी। पाण्डवों का भी यही हाल रहा। तो हम क्या चीज़ हैं? एक और बात - यह सब अवतारी अथवा पूर्वपुरुष कभी भी कटु नहीं बने। समाज से खिन्न नहीं हुए। कभी हारे नहीं। भले ही हम उनके आगे कुछ नहीं हैं, परंतु हमारे संघर्ष भी उनके जितने बड़े नहीं हैं।

रुक्मिणी देवी के पति का कुछ वर्ष पूर्व स्वर्गवास हो गया था। बहुत दुःखी हो गईं होंगी। घर से भाग कर वृंदावन चली गईं। वहां किसी भले मानस ने इन्हें बीमार कहीं गिरा हुआ पाया। वह इन्हें अपने साथ लखनऊ ले आए। वहां से थोड़ा स्वास्थ्य ठीक होने पर इन्हें इनकी बेटी के घर भेज दिया गया। उनकी बेटी ही बता रही थी कि उन्हें खोजने में हमें कितनी समस्या हुई। अब हम कल्पवासी शिविर के बाहर उनकी बेटी द्वारा संचालित चाय की टपरी में बैठे थे। अचानक अम्मा ने पुनः गाना शुरु कर दिया। अबकी बार भजन मां पार्वती की ओर से भगवान शंकर को समर्पित था। रुक्मिणी देवी यह भजन अपनी बेटी के चाचा-ससुर को लक्ष्य करके गा रही थी। उनकी पत्नी भी वहीं थी। देनों लजा गए। चाचा तो कुर्सी पलटकर ही बैठ गए। छेड़खानी जारी रही।

हम लोग चाय पीते-पीते भारतीय संस्कृति के प्रवाह को ठोस रूप में देख रहे थे। मैं यह नहीं कह रहा कि यह प्रवाह बहुधारा नहीं है। परंतु उसकी एक धारा में हम स्नान कर रहे थे। जो किन्हीं पोंगे आदर्शों में अतीत नहीं अपितु एक बूढ़ी अम्मा के जीवन में वर्तमान थी। वह कल्पवास नहीं कर रही थी। पर क्या हम यह बोलने का दुःसाहस कर सकते हैं कि वो एक साधक नहीं थी। उनके गीत अथवा उनका मुहावरा लोकातीत होते हुए भी लोक की चिंताओं एवं आनंद-विलास में अंतरंग गुंथे हुए थे। चाहे वो भक्ति में रमे गीत हों, चाहे अज्ञात बालकों पर प्रेम वर्षा हो, चाहे कुछ साझा करते हुए आंसुओं का निकलना हो, अथवा अपने संबंधी को छेड़ते हुए भी पारलौकिक मुहावरे का उपयोग। छेड़छाड़ भी दैवीय मुहावरे में! क्या अपने देश-काल में सुसंस्कृत रहते हुए इतना सहज व्यवहार किसी परमज्ञानी का लक्षण नहीं है? यकायक मुझे भारतीय समाज का बैशम द्वारा किया तित्रण स्मरण हो रहा है। वे, अपनी पुस्तक ‘द वण्डर देट वाज़ इण्डिया’, में लिखते हैं:

^{दण्डी ने एक निर्धन घर में परोसे गए साधारण भोजन के आनन्द का जो वर्णन किया है, वह प्राचीन भारतीय दैनिक जीवन का सम्भवतः उपनिषदों की अपेक्षा अधिक प्रातिनिधिक चित्र है। भारत एक प्रसन्न देश था, जहाँ के लोग — एक जटिल और मन्द गति से विकसित होती सामाजिक व्यवस्था में अपने लिए एक उपयुक्त स्थान पाकर — अपने पारस्परिक सम्बन्धों में दया और सौम्यता के उस स्तर तक पहुँचे थे, जहाँ प्राचीन युग का कोई अन्य राष्ट्र नहीं पहुँच सका।}

मैं अब इस निबंध को और बड़ा नहीं करना चाहता पर यह लिखे बिना नहीं रह पा रहा हूँ कि मैं भारतीय ज्ञान परंपरा पर दर्जनों सेमिनार एवं आयोजनों का प्रतिभागी एवं आयोजक रहा हूँ। उन सभी को मिलाकर भी मैं उतना नहीं सीखा जितना रुक्मिणी देवी से आधे घंटे की भेंट से। कारण? कारण संभवतः यह हो सकता है कि परंपरा व्यवहार में दिखती है, भाषा में खेलती है, एवं गीतों में बहती है। परंपरा केवल शब्दों अथवा भावों का बोझ हो जाए तो उससे किसका ही उपकार होगा। एक आधुनिक हिंदू भले ही अपनी पहचान पर गर्व करे पर क्या वह पहचान, आधुनिकता से इतर, उसके व्यवहार का अंतरंग हिस्सा है? यह प्रश्न मुझे मिलाकर सभी हिंदुओं के लिए शोचनीय है। मैंने मुस्लिम या ईसाई इसलिए नहीं लिखा क्योंकि ये समुदाय मूलतः विचारधारा-प्रधान हैं। दुनिया को सही मान्यता अथवा झूठी मान्यता में विभक्त करते हैं। सही आचार या गलत आचार पर नहीं। हिंदू संस्कृति में ऐसा नहीं है। निर्मल वर्मा कहीं लिखते हैं कि परंपरा अपनी अदृश्यता (व्यवहार में एकीकृत) में ही जीवित होती है। इसीलिए एक वास्तविक परंपरावादी हिंदू को यह विश्वास नहीं होगा कि कोई गैर-परंपरावादी भी हिंदू हो सकता है।

रुक्मिणी देवी परंपरा का बोझ नहीं ढो रही थी। वह लोक में परंपरा का मूर्त रूप बन हमारे समक्ष खड़ी थीं। मैं यह अनुमान भी नहीं लगा सकता कि आज वे जीवित होंगी या नहीं। उनसे भेंट को तीन वर्ष से अधिक बीत चुके हैं। तथापि मुझे लगता है कि वो जहां भी होंगी मस्त होंगी। कोई भजन गा रही होंगी। किसी को छेड़ रही होंगी। किसी पर प्रेम लुटा रही होंगी। कहीं अकेले भागने की योजना में भी हो सकती हैं। अपनी सभी भोगी हुई त्रासदियों को स्वीकार करके, अपनी परंपरा में स्थित, वे आनंद में ही होंगी। वैसे भी घटित पर चिंता करके लाभ भी क्या? एक दिना सब ही पर बीता…

कहते हैं कवि कुलगुरु कालीदास जी ने लिखना तब शुरु किया था जब उनकी मूर्खता से क्रोधित होकर उनकी विदुषि धर्मपत्नी ने उनका तिरस्कार कर उन्हें घर से निकाल दिया। उस दुःख से आक्रांत होकर वे साधक हो गए। माँ काली की विशेष अनुकम्पा से उनमें ज्ञानोदय हुआ, मन में कला-कुसुम खिला और वह कालीदास के नाम से विश्वविख्यात हुए। तुलसी दास जी भी अपनी भार्या से तिरस्कृत होकर ही लेखन-क्रिया में प्रवृत्त हुए थे। ऐसा लगता है कि विवाह और कालजयी लेखन में कोई विशेष नाता है। परंतु समस्या यह है कि, विदुषि मिलना तो दूर की बात, मेरा विवाह ही नहीं हुआ। इस वर्ष हो जाएगा, ऐसी आशा भी नहीं है। भावावेग में विषयांतर न करते हुए मूल-प्रश्न पर वापिस आते हैं- क्यों लिखा जाए?

आजकल बहुत सुनने में आता है कि लिखना अभिव्यक्ति का एक साधन है। मुझे लगता है यह बहुत एकांगी एवं अधूरी टिप्पणी है। एक ऐसी टिप्पणी जो अपनी विषमताओं को देख पाने में अक्षम परंतु आत्म-सशंकित आधुनिक मानव के हृत्स्थल से निकलती है। एक ऐसी मानव चेतना जिसका विकास यूरोपीय पुनर्जागरण के पश्चात हुआ। बहुत लोग नहीं समझते हैं कि नीत्चा का कथन ‘गॉड इज़ डेड’ आधुनिक विखण्डित चेतना की गहराइयों से निकला है। यह कोई उल्लास-वाक्य नहीं है। यदि कोई परासत्ता नहीं है तो मानव के अहंकार पर अंकुश कैसे लगेगा? लेखकीय संदर्भ में कहें तो हम आलोचनात्मक दृष्टिकोण तो पा लेंगे परंतु अपने दृष्टिकोण के प्रति आलोचनात्मक होने का साहस कहां से पाएंगे? कोरे व्यक्तिवाद एवं उससे जुड़ी समस्याओं से निजात कैसे मिलेगा?

अतः मैं नहीं मानता कि लेखन केवल एक अभिव्यक्ति का माध्यम मात्र है। अभिव्यक्ति अभिव्यक्त करने योग्य होनी भी तो चाहिए। परंतु इसका यह अर्थ नहीं है कि लिखना आवश्यक नहीं है। मुझे सदैव डर लगता था कि मेरी कितनी धारणाएं एवं मत प्रतिवर्ष बदलते चले जाते हैं। यदि मैं उन्हें लिख दूं तो कहीं वो जड़ न हो जाएं। मुझे लगता है कि मैं गलत था। हिंदी साहित्यकार निर्मल वर्मा कहीं लिखते हैं कि लिखने से विचारों का परिष्कार होता है। वह जो सोच रहे होते हैं जब उसको लिखके पढ़ते हैं तब न केवल उन्हें अपनी वैचारिक विषमताओं का आभास होता है बल्कि उसमें सुधार की संभावनाएं भी खुलती चली जाती हैं। मेरे लिए लिखने का मूल कारण यही रहेगा।

मुझे कुछ समय से ऐसा आभास हुआ है कि बहुत पढ़ने से कोई ज्ञानी नहीं हो जाता, लोग मूर्ख भी हो जाया करते हैं। हो सकता है इस अनुभूति का संबंध मेरे जे.एन.यू. निवास से हो। क्या पता? पर इतना मुझे अब स्पष्ट हुआ है कि यदि हम जो पढ़ते हैं वह सहज न हो, तो वह अर्जित जानकारी अविद्या की श्रेणी में ही आएगी। मेरे लिए लेखन संभवतः ज्ञान को सहज करने का मार्ग प्रशस्त करेगा। अपनी चिंतन-धाराओं के आत्मनिरीक्षण का माध्यम रहेगा। यदि किसी को इसमें कुछ अच्छा लगे तो ले सकते हैं। कुछ अटपटा लगे तो चाय पर बैठ सकते हैं।

कुछ सीखने की अभिलाषा में क्यों न लिखा जाए!
