As a young child, I enjoyed getting lost in books and exploring many different places but I never dreamt that I would one day really get to physically explore these places.

I was fortunate to marry a man who loved history and was keen to experience the places he had learnt about. So, after our children were old enough, we took the plunge and booked our first international holiday. We were not disappointed and so began many adventures that brought history alive to us and helped us to understand where our ancestral roots sprung from.

I have a vivid memory of flying into London in the early hours of the morning and looking out over the Thames and spotting landmarks like Big Ben, Westminster, London Bridge to name a few. The excitement was bubbling over in us as we anticipated what was ahead.

Yet it was the unexpected that is most memorable. “Where will we stay” is often part of the planning for any trip. We decided that our requirements were a warm, comfortable bed, washing facilities and budget friendly.

We opted to make use of Youth Hostels so we had joined the association in Australia and explored where these would take us. The type of accommodation differed, from dormitory style, to separate private rooms, shared bathrooms in old Manor houses, Palaces, Road workers huts, old Monasteries, hunting lodges up to modern purpose-built facilities.

Each brought its own charm, history and challenges, as we discovered, many had LOTS of stairs and no lifts so thankfully we were fit and able to manage. In most places we made use of the kitchen facilities for meals whilst in others, meals were available at a reasonable price. In each place there were people from all over the world and surprise, surprise the age groups ranged from late teens to people in advanced years. One place, we meet a ‘dapper’ gentleman in his 80’s who was headed out to climb Ben Lomond. Much information, tips and stories were gleaned from these folks and friendships were forged. Some places have promised Ghosts while others have been situated in places of incredible beauty; some in large cities like Dublin and yet others in remote areas like the one down Tipperary way where we were the only guests in a 100-bed hostel, even the manager was not sighted after we checked in. The best part was that we were able to do some washing and to dry it on the heaters in the various rooms without disturbing anyone. It was a bit eerie!

In Whitby, the town where Captain James Cook set sail from on his famous voyage of discovery was an adventure. The hostel was in the abbey connected to the ancient church set up on the hill. We scored a double room with our own en-suite on the top floor with views of the ocean. (A bit of trivia, this is also ‘Heartbeat’ country)

The next morning, whilst having our breakfast we sat chatting to a group of teachers and primary students who had come to Whitby to learn more about James Cook. Well, when they discovered that we lived in Queensland, close to the Glasshouse Mts, we had all sorts of questions directed to us. It was a delight to see the students keen to learn.

Tomintoul is another unexpected stop. Picture a cold night in the Scottish Highlands, the hostel is a converted hut, the shower is an outdoor affair and because it has been wet weather the bedsheets are hanging up in the kitchen area. We are in separate dormitories; there is an English manager and several young girls of various nationality who did not speak English. The manager brought out a game of Jenga and a bottle of some homemade scotch, it was an hilarious night. We had so much fun and went to bed to sleep soundly. When we woke the next day we discovered that the number of guests had tripled during the night, yet we slept through.

It is these Serendipity moments that are the most fascinating and memorable. Regardless of where you choose to stay, be they 2 or 5 star, expect the unexpected. Connecting with people can be so rewarding.

In 1866, modifications were made to the cookhouse, washhouse, and bakehouse to accommodate women prisoners, reflecting social needs at the time.

The engineer and convicts crafted such a sturdy fortress that parts of it now houses private businesses and TAFE classrooms.

No prisoners in Fremantle were assigned to private employers or individuals, unlike other penal settlements in other states.

On arrival in WA, their personal attire was replaced with a prison uniform made of lightweight canvas-like material called Diogheda linen. Their uniform consisted of a waistcoat, jacket and trousers and a straw or felt hat. The entire uniform was covered with a board bearing black arrows stamped all over.

Their day began at 5:00 am, and by 6:00, they marched out to their assigned labours. Small depots dotted the landscape, supporting the long treks to work.

Convicts laid the stones of Perth Town Hall, Government House, Fremantle Traffic Bridge, and Applecross Bridge. Their roads became the arteries of Stirling, Canning, and Albany Highways—none of which existed before their hands shaped the land.

After the cessation of convict transportation in 1868, the prison began housing civilian prisoners; despite this change, the daily routine largely continued unchanged.

Picture their daily routine: clutching a slop bucket from the night before, a water bucket, and a toothbrush as they filed out of their cells. The stench—human waste, harsh disinfectant, and breakfast mingling in the air—must have been overwhelming. Yet, with a long day of hard labour ahead, they had no choice but to endure or pinch their noses. Trough-cleaning (their daily body refresh) took place outdoors, rain or shine. Convicts were granted just one bath a week. Imagine toiling in the blistering heat, allowed only a single proper wash. Later, prisoners gained a small mercy: communal showers on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, with 25 men at a time.

Attempts In the 1970s, efforts to swap the slop bucket for portable chemical toilets failed—prisoners smashed them, and some even drank the chemicals. So, the bucket system lingered until the prison’s closure in 1991. A points system was introduced in the mid-70s, which the prisoner viewed as a basic human right. It was based on behaviours and languages. Every 8 marks accumulated meant you stayed an extra day in your sentence.

Some convicts endured up to 90 days in solitary, known as ‘around the back’ or ‘the choky,’ where light and air barely crept in.

The Church of England Chapel left the deepest impression on me. Engineer Henderson dreamed of a space filled with light, so he pioneered the use of laminate beams from Jarrah trees, once rooted in what is now Kings Park. These beams were lighter to hoist yet strong enough to span 14 metres—a technique so innovative it was later adopted at Perth Town Hall and copied by other states.

The chapel’s artwork astonished me. Convict Charles Josiah Hamilton, sent here for attempted murder, spent three years crafting the Lord’s Prayer, the Ten Commandments, and the Apostles’ Creed. Even the glass windows are handmade and, incredibly, have no bars.

Very little of the original women’s prison remains. Operating from 1888 to 1970, the women’s cells, measuring around 1.4 x 2.4 meters, were larger than the men’s, as women often had babies or young children with them. A female matron was on duty day and night, but received only half the pay of her male counterparts. Matron Iles, who served from 1956 to 1970, recalled, “I’ve had a mother and her daughter, then later the daughter’s daughter. The focus, therefore, must be on rehabilitation.”

Capital Punishment – 43 males and 1 female were hanged. All for murder. The first was on 2/03/1889, and the last was on 26/10/1964.

Superstitions - #13 featured. 13 steps leading to the gallows, The drop from the rope of the trap door to the floor in the pit is 13 feet. There are 13 spaces between the beams on the roof of the gallows. A lot of hangings had 12 witnesses, the 13th being the person who died and was hanged.

Owls also played a part. Apparently, they appeared when someone was sentenced to death. In February 1996, an owl reappeared, even though the prison was closed and capital punishment had been abolished. This time it landed on the cross of the Church of England chapel, which is almost directly above the gallows!

I marvelled at the prison’s endurance, the clever schemes of escapees (tales for another time), and, above all, the chapel. (Fenians & Catalpa - whale ship & June 1971 escape using technology of the day)

Yet, no matter the history or grandeur, a lingering sadness haunted the cells, clinging like a ghostly shadow.

I think prisoners today fare much better, but perhaps there are lessons to learn from those early convicts. Many were punished for minor crimes, yet they laboured tirelessly, leaving behind roads, bridges, and civic landmarks.

In case you don’t know - Playa del Carmen is a vibrant coastal resort city in Mexico's Riviera Maya, famous for its powdery white-sand beaches, crystal-clear Caribbean waters, and lively bohemian atmosphere. Located 45 minutes south of Cancun, it serves as the perfect base for exploring Mayan ruins, cenotes, and world-class offshore coral reefs.

I’d arrived in Mexico City close to midnight to do research for a thesis, and spend time at La Casa Azul [The Blue House] of Frida Kahlo on the Northern outskirts of town. The night before I had barely slept as gunshots pinged outside my hostel, ravenous as grocers with the teeniest metal grill through which to make payments had locked up for the night and left.

Beguiled by dyed textiles and intricate crochet in Oaxaca, I had taken a wrong turn down a deserted alley straying too far from the busy market day crowds.

I’d got through Villahermosa Bus Station unscathed, and eventually relaxed into the fourteen-hour journey, mesmerised by termite mounds and cacti in the desert like savanna flatlands en route to the Yucatan Peninsula.

As one of only four non-Mexicans on the bus packed with people, chickens and goats, I felt an obvious target when we were flagged down by a group of armed men, hammering on the front windows. The off duty sleeping drivers and guard at the back woke to full alert and bolted down to the front with baseball bats to intercept the intruders now muscling their way on board. I slunk down in my seat, trying to drag my rucksack with me to become invisible, not sure if this fracas was to do with the cartels.

Finally arriving at Chichen Itza and climbing the central 365 stepped Mayan pyramid of El Castello, it struck me that one misstep could lead to a horrible fall if I lost my footing from this extraordinary height.

Realising I had navigated a few spicy moments, the idea of Cancun and beaches seemed an alluring prospect, until the bus arrived and I looked around the scale, glitz and lights. I could not do it.

I just stayed on the bus wending its way down the East Coast until it felt right to get off. I read a little paragraph in my dog-eared Lonely Planet about a quiet fishing village called Playa del Carmen of only a few thousand people, and my feet followed my heart off the bus.

I rented a simple, wooden beach hut with a balcony facing the Caribbean Sea, complete with picture perfect hammock slung between palm trees and went to explore.

Teva’s in hand, I paddled in the glittering azure water as the sun was going down, heading hopefully in the direction of a little civilisation and food, and tried to situate myself geographically now I planned to stay a few days…much more my tempo and scale than Cancun. Dogs in small but unthreatening packs trotted along beside me, and I was enchanted by the unlikely sight of tiny piglets running up the beach. I have never equated pigs with the ocean and decided water promised great snorkelling tomorrow.

Caught by the distant strains of guitar god Carlos, I followed the music from the shoreline to a clump of trees. But, there was nothing to see! Confused I looked around and saw a rope ladder from one of the larger trees. I could feel my pulse quickening. Curiosity beat trepidation and I climbed up into the most perfect tree house I could have imagined; - ‘The Magic Faraway Tree’ for grown-ups.

Scattered with only a few people, I took in the simple woven branch flooring that creaked as I walked over two slightly different floor levels. With a couple of built in raised bench seats booths and a little bar with fairy lights, they had made a full-on treehouse come watering hole in the tropics. Bliss. I was in my unrequited childhood dream treehouse.

I knew I was in paradise when I chose the swing seat over the hammock to luxuriate in my serendipitous find as the Santana album played. An ambient and perfect pairing.

As I remember it, the barman brought me a bottle of ice cold beer which tasted like nectar after the hot and dusty journey and I treated myself to some grilled seafood that arrived with perfect char from griddles. Heaven.

The air was warm and aromatic with tinges of distant ganga that added a languid syrupy comfort and balm. A sybaritic sojourn atop the branches, senses soothed by food, sand and sea.

That night I slept.

Research done and my observations and new experiences set to lead me down a rabbit hole of design anthropology and cultural production. A tale for another day.

Let’s explore the meaning of the word artefact.

‘An artifact (or artefact) is any object made, used, or modified by humans. These items hold cultural, historical, or scientific importance and serve as physical evidence of past societies, helping researchers understand how people lived and interacted with their environment.’

I’ve highlighted the importance of the definition.

This brings up further inquiry: what quantity was pilfered?

It is impossible to give an exact number, as millions of artifacts have been looted, smuggled, or seized over the centuries.

The scale of artifact theft can be grouped by major historical eras and ongoing criminal operations:

Wartime Plunder (e.g., WWII): During the Second World War alone, occupying forces and the Axis powers systematically looted an estimated 516,000 individual art and historical pieces from Poland, with losses in that country alone valued at around $20 billion.

Modern Illicit Trafficking: The illegal antiquities trade remains highly active. In one major recent international crackdown, law enforcement seized over 37,000 cultural objects—including archaeological artifacts, works of art, and coins—in a single year.

Contemporary Museum Thefts: Even major institutions are not immune; recent internal breaches led to an estimated 2,000 artifacts being stolen or missing from the British Museum.

That raises whether rightful owners get their items back.

Low Recovery Rates: Experts estimate that only about 7% to 8% of stolen art and artifacts are ever recovered and returned to their rightful owners.

Who has the reputation of stealing heaps?

Stéphane Breitwieser (The Art & Artifact Hoarder) is widely considered the most prolific museum thief in history. A French national, he stole over 230 paintings, sculptures, and historical artifacts from roughly 172 museums across Europe between 1995 and 2001. He rarely used high-tech break-ins; instead, he visited museums during the daytime and slipped small antiquities into his bag or coat. He kept his hoard secretly displayed in his mother’s attic, and its value was estimated at up to $1.4 billion. You can read more about his obsession in the official The Art Thief book profile. Have any countries escaped this stealing altogether?

Finland - Finland itself has not been the victim of a single, massive, historical artefact looting on par with colonial-era European heists. When people ask about stolen artefacts involving Finland, they generally refer to historical and cultural objects that have been repatriated from Finland to their rightful owners or countries of origin.

Sacred Stones of Namibia: In 2023, Finland returned fragments of sacred stones that Finnish missionaries had taken from the Ondonga kingdom in northern Namibia.

Let’s start in my country, Australia, and look at a few examples.

Recently, Australia - Abbey Museum Heist: In February 2026, thieves broke into the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology in Caboolture, north of Brisbane. They stole “priceless” Egyptian antiquities, including a 26th Dynasty painted wooden cat figure, a 3,300-year-old necklace, and a certified mummy mask.

Historically - Captain Cook’s Voyage (1770): Four Aboriginal spears were taken from Kamay (Botany Bay) during Captain James Cook’s first voyage. They were held by Trinity College, Cambridge, before being returned.

New Zealand - Since 2003, New Zealand’s Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa has spearheaded a global repatriation program. It has successfully retrieved the remains of hundreds of Indigenous ancestors from overseas institutions in countries like Germany and Austria. However, several global archives—such as the British Museum—still house extensive collections of taonga and preserved heads.

Canada - Vatican Artifacts (2025): The Vatican Museums repatriated 62 Indigenous cultural items that had been stored in Rome for over a century. These items included an Inuit sealskin kayak and Cree-embroidered gloves, sent back following historic apologies from Pope Francis.

Chief Crowfoot’s Regalia: Historic pieces, such as clothing belonging to Blackfoot Chief Crowfoot—a signatory of Treaty 7 in 1877—were taken and put on display in museums in the United Kingdom, sparking long-running repatriation negotiations.

Scotland - The Stone of Destiny (Stone of Scone). What happened: This ancient, sacred sandstone block was used for centuries to inaugurate Scottish monarchs. In 1296, King Edward I of England invaded Scotland and seized the stone, taking it to Westminster Abbey in London as a spoil of war.

France - The Louvre Museum Heist (October 2025): Thieves executed a brazen, four-minute daytime raid at the Louvre’s Galerie d’Apollon. They escaped with eight cultural treasures, including Empress Marie-Louise’s Set: an emerald necklace and a pair of emerald earrings. They also took Empress Eugène’s jewels: a diamond-studded diadem, a “reliquary brooch,” and a large corsage-bow brooch. Queen Marie-Amélie’s jewels included a sapphire diadem, necklace, and a single earring worn by the last queen of France.

Spain - Francis Bacon Paintings: Five artworks by Francis Bacon, worth a total of €25 million ($27 million), were stolen from a Madrid apartment in 2015. Spanish police have since recovered four of the portraits, including a €5 million piece retrieved in 2024.

Why do people steal?

Stéphane Breitwieser (The Art & Artifact Hoarder) said he wanted to ‘liberate’ precious objects from institutional vaults so they could live in a private ‘treasure chest’. He also noted that stealing was a way to reclaim the beautiful antiques he lost when his parents split up during his youth.

Monsalve is accused of a museum break-in in Australia. He claims he didn’t steal the items for profit. ABC News reported he claimed the institution lacked the authority to possess the items. He asserted his duty to secure the artifacts and restore them to their home.

Looted art has been a consequence of war, natural disasters, and riots for centuries. Cultural property theft can occur by chance or be part of an organized raid by the victors of a war.

People who steal are seldom motivated by financial necessity;

The motivations for stealing generally fall into several core psychological profiles: emotional regulation and numbing, the adrenaline rush, a need for control, impulse control, and kleptomania, and psychological rationalisation.

Whatever you think or believe–maybe karma has the final say -

This quote originates from an official social media post made by Peace 104.3 FM: “Theft may give you a momentary advantage, but karma will ensure that you pay the price.”

It’s a good thing we can still see these items of significance, no matter who they belong to. One would hope that those who have stolen will heed karma and return the items to where they belong for future generations.

Book the trip, pack your bag, and figure out the plan… eventually. That was my entire strategy. This was my European Adventure, and I was flying by the seat of my pants — which, let’s be honest, is my life motto.

It all started as a joke. My German colleague was heading home for a few months, and I casually asked if I could come too. She said yes. Suddenly I was booking flights, messaging my old Swiss housemate, and realising I’d suddenly organised a two‑country holiday. Classic Sarah: one joke away from international travel.

With cerebral palsy, airports can be a marathon I never signed up for, so Flight Centre organised assisted transfers. Getting lost? Fine. Missing a flight? Less fine. Being escorted through airports because I can’t walk fast? Perfect.

Germany welcomed me into my friend’s family home, and we spent the week exploring. I sampled sausages, pretzels, and a hot chocolate that tasted like someone whispered “cocoa” over warm milk. I also discovered that saying “Danke” instantly convinced people I was fluent in German. I just rolled with it. If they asked anything more complicated, I smiled politely and hoped for the best.

Then came my favourite part: solo adventuring. I hopped on a random train simply because it existed. I got off at a university stop and wandered around. Later, on my way to meet my friend, my train terminated at a random station. I got off and every train that arrived was terminating. I had no idea where I was. So naturally, I sat down and laughed. When in doubt, giggle it out. Eventually I jumped on a train going the opposite direction, recognised a stop, and pieced my way back like a public‑transport detective.

Germany was beautiful but very reserved — especially around disability. Meanwhile, I was out here cackling at train stations and confusing locals with my Aussie energy. We explored parks, watched surfers ride river waves, and flew down the autobahn at 160km/h. I loved it! The speed was exhilarating.

Then Switzerland. My hotel sat right beside a tram stop — dangerous for someone who loves winging it into the unknown. My housemate and I explored mountains, gondolas, lakes, and medieval castles with arrow slits and prison rooms. I kept imagining medieval guards saying, “Who let this Aussie in?”

On my solo days, I let Central Station decide my destiny. I boarded trains without checking destinations and got off at the final stop. One stop had boats lined up, so I bought a ticket. I thought it was a short river ride. Nope — it was a fancy two‑and‑a‑half‑hour cruise with a restaurant. Of course it was. Only I could accidentally book a luxury lunch.

I even made it to the “top of Europe,” navigating entirely with Google Maps and blind optimism. Fog swallowed the mountain, then suddenly parted to reveal a view so stunning I forgot how cold I was. I sat there eating snacks, soaking in the magic.

The trip home was peak Sarah chaos. The airport staff forgot me in the assisted boarding room. I was whisked through the terminal like a late celebrity. The plane waited. I walked on knowing I’d held up hundreds of people. I don’t think the airport staff will forget me now!

I came home buzzing. I loved adventuring with friends, but the real magic was getting lost on my own — trusting trains, trams, boats, and my own joyful chaos. I can’t wait for the next trip.

Yes, we’re going to Mt Alfred, where you’ll get great views and can spot the Big Wedge-Tailed Eagle soaring above.

In the words of the Land of Bigs - Hats off to the abs-birdly talon-ted Benjamin Gilbert and his team at Agency of Sculpture, this pleasant passerine was able to take up residence at the delightful Mount Alfred Gap Lookout in 2019.

The site offers eagle-eye views of beautiful buttes and bubbling brooks, and the chance to watch real-life eagles plucking rabbits from the meadows, carrying them to great heights, and then dropping them to their doom.

Take in stunning river and valley views from Mount Alfred Gap Lookout, overlooking picturesque farmland.

Continue your Great River Road journey: head up Murray River Road to the Pine Mountain Information Stop, or travel downriver via Talgarno to reach ‘The Bridge to Moon.’

Now, here are some fun facts to consider as you watch Wedge-Tailed Eagles soar.

1. They possess “zoom lens” eyesight. Wedge-tailed eagles see eight times more detail than humans and can spot a wider range of colours. Their eyes adapt by squeezing and elongating like a camera lens to pinpoint prey from afar.

2. They build massive, long-lasting nests. These huge nests in the tallest trees can be up to 2 meters wide and 4 meters deep. They reuse the same nest each year, with some used for over 50 years.

3. They Stay Together For Life: Wedge-tailed eagles are monogamous and share their territory. Both parents help build the nest, keep eggs warm, and feed their young.

4. They use “safety goggles.” While hunting, they have a third eyelid called the nictitating membrane. This membrane acts as a protective goggle when grabbing prey, letting them see while protecting their eyes.

5. They Can Fly Higher Than Aeroplanes: These eagles can soar for up to 90 minutes and, using thermal currents, reach altitudes of up to 2,000 meters.

Which of these do you like best? I’d choose ‘zoom lens eyesight’, though I wouldn’t mind the ‘safety goggles’. My reason involves a garden stake and my left eye. I don’t think I’d be brave enough to soar at 2000 metres!

From what I understand, the largest verified wingspan was a female in Tasmania in 1931, recorded as 284 cm (9ft 4 ins). They are not endangered but common among the world’s large eagles. Their diet includes rabbits, wallabies, kangaroos, reptiles, birds, and carrion. The Wedge-Tailed Eagle is fully protected in all Australian states.

Where to next? If you guessed alcohol, you’re close.

Not far, less than 200 kilometres away, is our next stop. I saved it for last in case you end up over the limit and have to pull up stumps for the night!

In the words of the lands of bigs – should you visit Rutherglen’s Big Wine Bottle? Wine not! This 36-metre-tall flagon is a real corker, so it stands to reason that you should make a chardonnay day of it and head to Victoria’s premier wine-growing region.....the Bottle makes a real glass act!

In the early 1900s, it was a water tower. At the 1967 Rutherglen Wine Festival, after a few ‘maybe too many’ wines, the idea of converting it was suggested. By 2014, the transformation was complete.

I found at least ten wineries around Rutherglen for you to explore. You can choose and plan your route.

Before you end up with wobbly boots, let’s explore the area’s history.

• Early Settlement (1830s-1850s): Explored in 1836, the area was part of the Wahgunyah pastoral run established by John Foord in 1841.

• Gold Rush: Gold was discovered in July 1860, sparking a massive, fast-paced gold rush, with the population booming to 20,000. The town was named after a Scottish town near Glasgow.

• When gold ran out, miners and settlers started planting vines. By the 1880s, the area had become a famous wine district.

• In the 1890s, phylloxera almost destroyed the vineyards. The Viticultural College helped promote vines on hardy American rootstock.

• Modern Era: The industry bounced back, shifting toward the region’s famous fortified and rich red wines, such as Durif and Shiraz.

What do you know about wine bottles? Or do you just recycle them after enjoying the contents?

1. The “punt” at the base is a dip that came from when bottles were hand-blown. It helps the bottle stand flat and strong.

2. A bottle of wine contains about 600–800 grapes, depending on the type.

3. Bottle colour affects preservation. Dark green or amber bottles are not just traditional; they are designed to filter out light, preventing UV rays from spoiling the wine inside.

4. The largest bottle is the “Maximus.” A standard bottle (750ml) gives about 5 servings.

5. Bottle aging vs. barrel aging: Many bottles are meant to be consumed within 12–18 months of purchase, contrary to the myth that all wine improves with bottle aging.

Personally, I usually have a Semillon Sauvignon Blanc on weekends. I also enjoy good sparkling wines, though my favourites are a bit out of my budget.

Years ago, a work colleague overindulged at a free alcohol function and ended up with red-tinted teeth. She didn’t notice, and despite us all being dressed to the nines, she curled up on some chairs and napped. Many photos were taken. The next day, we faced a 600+ kilometre road trip home. Thankfully, vigorous teeth cleaning removed the evidence! She live another day even though she remembers little until she starting cleaning her teeth!

I’m sure you all have some memorable wine stories. As for swooping birds, I’ve only had encounters with magpies—never eagles!

People often ask if I ever felt lonely during my long solo trip.

The only time I felt a bit down was when I had a cold—otherwise, I didn’t and don’t!

Newsletter # 9 - ‘I arrived in London, just before the end of the financial year, which made me think about work and home for the first time. How frantic it is at this time of year in the financial services industry? I had a touch of the flu, so maybe that was why I was thinking more of home. I knew I had lots more to see and do and maybe the constant change and experiences were forcing me to be in the moment, so there wasn’t any time to think homesick thoughts.’

Travelling with others hasn’t always worked out for me, so I find solo travel suits me better.

One big advantage is having the freedom to pick your own activities and destinations.

You can spread your things out all over your room if you feel like it.

You can choose a single bed and put your bag wherever you like.

You get to have the first shower every day.

You control your schedule, turning the lights off and waking up whenever you want.

You’re free to be yourself. Be silly, brave, have a drink, or flirt—whatever you usually keep hidden at home. After all, you might never see these people again.

Remember all my male interludes during my trip. I wasn’t doing the flirting but was definitely getting ‘hit on’ by men in Egypt (Mickey in Africa, camel offer, Queen for the day, Paris x 2 instances to name a few) My only crush was on the tour guide around Europe, remember.

Yes, you are responsible for your luggage, safety, not getting lost, and being ready for all connections.

Travelling solo on my big trip made me interact more with my tour group and locals.

Remember on a whim I trekked up to the first level of Mt K.

You can make lifelong friendships. Some are still my Facebook friends, though they now live in other states in Australia or other countries.

Engage in your passions or hobbies if possible, such as a pottery class in Japan.

Most countries are welcoming and respectful towards travellers. My experiences in Africa and Japan especially stand out.

I found that the experience increased my confidence and taught me to trust my intuitive feelings.

I believe it changed me for the better—I’m braver, more outspoken, independent, and in tune with people and my surroundings.

Find your tribe. Look for no solo supplement tours and cruises. Be free and travel wherever, whenever, however. Be whoever you really are.

It really is liberating!

I found it exciting due to the frequent, unfamiliar destinations we encountered. This is a story of a road trip I imagined taking as a little kid with my family, but the destination is an Award for the Sunshine Coast hinterland, only received recently.

One thing that I do admit about road trips of my youth, especially the Sarina to Rockhampton one in the fifties and sixties–after doing it many times it was monotonous. Not much to see; you can only count the bottle trees so many times. On some of these trips, I would frequently call out from the back seat those words parents’ dread. “Are we there yet!?” When this got the better of me, I would curl up in a ball on the back bench seat and sleep most of the way. Sometimes missing some great scenes!

Today, this road trip mustn’t be far, and we are leaving much later in the day. We have only packed a picnic basket, a blanket, cushions and binoculars.

So, immediately I think, there must be something worth seeing in the distance. But I’m excited as I know it will be dark soon, so that sets my imagination firing in all directions.

No hints are shared by our parents, only that it’s a surprise, which makes my heart beat even faster with anticipation. I do my happy dance around the car before we jump in and take off.

Mum and Dad are busy navigating and admiring the scenery and chatting about adult stuff, so it was my chance.

The picnic basket is placed in the back seat between my brother and me. Curiosity gets the better of me, and I tell my brother to shoosh and quietly, sneakily open the lid a little and peer inside. There were lots of finger food treats, and I started salivating over the food as it wasn’t long to dinner time.

My brother, being slightly older than me, pipes up with lots of questions about where we are going. To stop him from continually asking further questions snippets of information are given.

I listen intently, hoping to find out more as we travel along, and my excitement builds. The most information they share with us is that it has something to do with a kids’ song, travelling, darkness and diamonds.

I notice we are heading to the Sunshine Coast hinterland, so we put our thinking caps on. Then I hear Dad say, “It should be a good view as the skies are clear and the weather is fine.”

Before I know it, we slow down and pass through the historical town of Landsborough. The train is disappearing down the track towards Brisbane.

Then we start to climb upwards and before we have worked out our destination we pull into a lookout–Balmoral Ridge-and stop.

The sun is starting to set, as we find a suitable picnic spot and unload our gear, and all was revealed.

We’re here to experience a recent award received by the Sunshine Coast hinterland, known as the Dark Sky Reserve Award. We are having a picnic with minimal light pollution so that we can do some stargazing.

Darkness descends as we spread out our goodies. I then spotted some sparklers in the bottom of the basket. Mum immediately says they are for afterwards.

My brother and I started singing ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star’ and yell all the hinted words that we were provided.

Mum and Dad sing ‘Starry, Starry Night’ and talk about Vincent Van Gogh paintings.

I’m mesmerised by the number of stars twinkling down, shining and illuminating the clear night sky. Then, to top that off, we all see a shooting star and make a wish.

I want to touch them and imagine they will feel like when the sparklers spark zaps your skin.

Dad says there are lots of other spots to choose from: Howells Know Lookout; Pioneer Park. I say the binoculars aren’t bringing them close enough for me.

Mum says next time we might go to an observatory where they have telescopes. I jump up and down. Then start firing questions at my parents.

I have totally forgotten about all the goodies to eat. Mum reminds me, but I am so busy looking up. It is getting late, and it’s a school night, so we get to light the sparklers and dance around in the darkness before we head home.

I don’t go to sleep in the back seat this time and ask Mum and Dad to set our next stargaze visit, hopefully with a telescope.

One of my favourite travel memories is watching the sun set behind Mount Kilimanjaro. Copy of words from my original newsletter “Then to top off this vivid dreamlike day I experienced the most magnificent sunset – the sun in all its glory was so huge, it lit up the whole sky with the deepest tangerine orange – it was like the sky was on fire and it had the same effect on me. I burnt with excitement and the wonder of nature.” Experiences like this are the reason travel is at the top of my list of favourite things.

Before I start sharing, I’m reminded of how lucky we are that such clever people write songs and share them with us. To enjoy and sing along to.

I bet there is a song about just about every subject you can think of.

Why not think of your favourite things and hum Julie Andrews’ ‘My Favourite Things’? My favourite lyric from the song is ‘whiskers on kittens’.

The inspiration behind writing this piece is to share the magic and meaning travel adds to my life. So, let’s begin.

1. The excitement and anticipation of travelling to somewhere you’ve never seen or been before. Remember in my NL # 1

“Just like a kid, leaving home for the first time, I set off with my backpack, matching trolley bag and a red sleeping bag – together with a kit bag of emotions – scared, sad, in awe, free, excited, proud, and dazed!”

2. Organising your travel list and booking everything in advance builds excitement as you count down the days. For me, it’s only 131 until I step on the plane to New Zealand. I’m already imagining the adventures that await exploring the dramatic landscapes of Milford Sound, hiking through lush forests, meeting friendly locals at bustling markets, and maybe even catching a glimpse of a kiwi bird in the wild. There’s so much I hope to discover and experience for the first time, and I can’t wait to share the stories and surprises that this journey will bring.

3. Boarding the plane, knowing you face 20+ hours ahead, you realise each landing brings you closer to your journey’s start. The excitement lingers for me, even if it’s only a changeover or fuel stop.

4. You’ve landed—no flight delays, no lost luggage—and your long-awaited journey begins!

5. Seeing something unexpected in all its glory: sunset on Mt. Kilimanjaro; snow atop Mt. Fuji; innocent native children playing in the Indian Ocean; the only helicopter ride over Niagara Falls that day; music and colourful houses in Santa Margaretha.

6. Taking risks, stepping out on your own, and learning. My haircut and colour in Paris (with language barriers on both sides, but learning that the French love Aussies); exploring London solo and learning so much history – Florence Nightingale, Shakespeare Walk, the Tower Bridge opening up.

7. The people and their culture: Tanzanian meals and provocative dancing; Masai warriors; an Egyptian offer of camels for marriage and the suitor’s return to Australia; Canadian Mounties; the Amish.

8. Fellow travellers = friends. Remember the girls and me on the rapids in Canada; my invitation to visit a fellow traveller’s childhood home; the Exotic Marigold Hotel; and visiting a fellow traveller back in Perth.

9. All the extra snippets of information that are passed on by my competent tour guides – the history of some nursery rhymes on the bus around the UK, the tax collection on the Nile River, and the important role women played in history.

10. When you return home, you unpack your bag for the last time, wear different clothes, sleep in your bed, and finally feel at home. Grateful for where you’ve been, what you’ve seen and done and that you are home safe! Soon, your cat stops giving you the cold shoulder and curls up, purring.

Do you remember when I wrote the meaning of Travel from The Origins of words and phrases - TRAVEL - Keen globetrotters might reflect on how privileged they are to have aircraft, credit cards, internet access and all other conveniences of modern travel, but others will regard it as torture. Well, ‘torture ‘ is at the root of the word travel, which came from travail, a literary word for ‘painful or laborious effort’. The two forms were once interchangeable, and originated in an instrument of torture, called ‘trepalium’ in Latin, that consisted of three stakes.

Robert Louis Stevenson, himself a keen traveller, was the first to express the view that it is better to travel hopefully than to arrive, in 1881. The idea that travel broadens the mind is also relatively recent, appearing first in 1900.

So, why not take the meaning of Travel and take a three-stakes approach?

So, travel often; travel carefully; and always travel with the wonder of a child, staying open to new experiences. This is what makes travel one of my favourite things.

As a gentle challenge, why not try exploring somewhere new this week—even if it is just a nearby park, a street you have never wandered down, a museum you have been meaning to visit, or a local café? Sometimes, adventure starts right at your doorstep. I hope you find a little magic wherever you go.

Enough about me. Where are we going this time? Both destinations have inspired books and movies.

One was a notorious roamer, known for misdeeds. The other was a mythical forest creature featured in fantasy fiction.

Let me give you a clue to our destinations: one location is Mooroopna—that’s the challenging one to guess. Just having fun with you! The other is Glenrowan. Both offer their own unique stories.

I bet you all guessed, at least one now.

Some people believe having convicted relatives in their family tree is now a status symbol. I think Bushranger should join them, as in many cases, they were doing good for less fortunate and poor families.

We are off to Mooroopna, a town near Shepparton. This time, our big star is Norbert, the bright yellow dragon from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Norbert’s scales match the sunlight, and his pointed spikes always capture everyone’s attention.

Norbert is a Norwegian Ridgeback dragon hatched by Rubeus Hagrid in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone from an egg won in a card game. Due to its dangerous nature and rapid growth, Harry, Ron, and Hermione arrange for it to be sent to Romania to live with Charlie Weasley. It was later revealed in Deathly Hallows to be female, renamed Norberta.

Have you read or watched any of the Harry Potter series?

According to the Land of Bigs, Norbert the Yellow Dragon was inspired by young Hamish’s visit to his pop’s farm just outside Shepparton. There, he quickly sketched plans for the golden goliath. Generations of Gaffys then gathered at the ranch to bring his vision to life.

“Hamish loved making it a family project,” David beamed. “Uncle Tim welded, Grandpa designed the tail. Getting our hands dirty was too fun to miss.”

“I was actually thinking of it being 50 times bigger than it is,” his eight-year-old son, Hamish, gloated. “It’s the dragon from Harry Potter.”

Norbert the Yellow Dragon is a cheerful figure, but the Gaffy family, who built him as a holiday art project, couldn’t be more disappointed: they had hoped for a soul-devouring, fire-breathing, child-scaring monster.

Mooroopna, a historic town on the Goulburn River, originated as a 19th-century river crossing and is now a thriving agricultural hub near Shepparton. Known for the “Flats” Aboriginal walk, the largest medical museum collection in country Victoria, and scenic Gemmills Swamp, it offers rich cultural history, nature, and community charm.

History of Mooroopna

• Origin: The name stems from the Kaieltheban tribe and translates to “deep water hole,” referring to a deep section of the Goulburn River.

• Industrial Growth: The town grew significantly, driven by the fruit-picking industry, with a strong link to the Ardmona Cannery, a major local employer.

• Culture: The area is part of Yorta Yorta Country, and has a deep history of indigenous and European agricultural intersection.

Things to See and Do in Mooroopna

• Historical Society of Mooroopna Museum: Located in a former nursing home, it hosts a huge collection of local medical history, photography, and memorabilia related to the fruit industry.

• The Flats Walk: An educational trail highlighting the history of the local Aboriginal community who lived on the Goulburn River flats.

• Town Streetscape & Monuments: View the bronze statue of famous Grand Prix motorcycle racer Cyril “Jack” Findlay, the war memorial, and the colourful water tower.

Location
Mooroopna is located in the Goulburn Valley, immediately west of Shepparton, Victoria, making it part of a vibrant regional hub.

Having explored our previous stop, let’s now visit Glen Rowan—the site of Big Ned Kelly, the infamous bushranger.

According to the Land of Bigs - He might be modelled after the most brutal, bloodthirsty bushranger in Aussie history, but the only thing the Big Ned Kelly is going to steal is your heart! The six-metre-tall buckethead prefers taking photos to taking hostages, but is still very much on the most wanted list of anyone travelling through rural Victoria!
The original Ned Kelly became a national icon in the 1800s, known for robbing stagecoaches and clashes with police while wearing his famous armour. He was finally captured and arrested in Glenrowan in 1880, and later hanged, but his legend lives on. It’s curious to see a “Big” statue inspired by such a divisive figure.

Glenrowan has become a Mecca for Ned-Heads, so it’s no surprise there’s actually been three Big Bushrangers banged up over the years. The first, constructed in 1980, was stolen by a group of street toughs and dumped in a nearby river – a sad, if somewhat appropriate end. The second lives inside the Glenrowan Tourist Centre and can only be seen for a fee. Ah, Ned, pinching money from the public once again! The current version took over the town in 1992 and was built by Sydney special effects guru Kevin Thomas. He weighs a zaftig 1.5 tonnes, costs $12,000, and it would be a crime not to visit him.

Glenrowan is home to a number of shops selling Ned Kelly memorabilia, with reasonable prices that make shopping enjoyable rather than a case of highway robbery. A self-guided educational trail winds through the town’s historical sites, giving you the chance to learn about Ned’s last stand. The Glenrowan Hotel, located next door to where Ned was captured, is a welcoming pub where the only shots now are poured by the barman.

While writing my historical fiction based on my great-aunt, a young female publican, I discovered that there was also a female publican at the Glenrowan Hotel during Kelly’s last stand. The connection to my book feels serendipitous. Her name was Ann Jones.

As you recall from my notes, I recently read ‘The Instrumentalist’ by Harriet Constable, which inspired me on this writing journey of Venice.

On streets with no names, through alleys and canals, we get lost in the rhythm and flow, experiencing the waters, sounds, smells, and colours of this historically rich city.

We’ll venture off and on the well-worn tourist path, stepping into the shoes of both Vivaldi and Anna Maria Della Pieta. While everyone has heard of Vivaldi, have you heard of Anna Maria?

Anna Maria was only about two weeks old when she was pushed through a hole in a wall to a convent. Ospedale della Pietà was originally a convent, an orphanage, and a music school. Infants, including Anna Maria, were shoved through the scaffetta window by their prostitute mums, who could not afford to keep them. Some of the babies had suffered illnesses causing deformities, loss of limbs and eyes. Some had their heads squashed in the process of being shoved through the window. The convent was unpleasant, with heavy work, limited space, and food that was often unfit for human consumption.

Yet, if these innocent babies survived and were disciplined, they were given the opportunity to learn to play an instrument. Many of them, all female, went on to become famous musicians—a positive outcome after such a difficult start in life. Anna Maria was only eight years old when her talent with the violin was recognised by a music teacher.

It was a very closeted lifestyle. The only times they left the orphanage were to play for dignitaries. This was the orphanage’s main funding source.

I can hear the bells—Isola San Giorgio Maggiore’s bell tower. It must be 9:00am. The bell towers of Saint George Major stand on the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore, facing San Mark Square. Anna Maria’s mum would have heard and seen the first tower, built in 1442 (as described above). The current tower rises 63 metres, slender and airy like an arrow. Its pink shaft, white belfry, and green tower shift with the day’s colours. An angel tops it, watching over Venice and its lagoon. From the top, you see boats making waves on the lagoon—it looks like a lighthouse. You can also visit the church and see Tintoretto’s large Last Supper painting. Many options wait for you to explore at your own pace.

Did you know Venice is so popular with tourists that they have now imposed a €5 tourist tax for day-trippers?

Want to see more of Venice without the maddening crowds? Start early, as the sun rises, and visit the path that Anna Maria’s mum walked. The Piazza San Marco is less crowded before 11:00 or in the wintertime, as the sun sets and the mists are embellished with golden lamplight.

Back to her story….

Anna Maria achieves her goal and is finally called maestro. As her confidence increases, she realises the master is using her and all the other talented musicians for his own benefit. She composes a piece and is allowed to play it under the master’s baton. Everyone was in ruptures, but the master takes all the credit. She runs away from the Pietta. One of the places she visits with the help of a wealthy woman benefactor is San Polo.

It is one of the districts of Venice, famous for its history and legends. Explore Rio de la Doña Torre, the mysterious “Lettuce” church, and the legend of Dona Onesta.

There are many versions of this legend. In one, a sword-maker’s wife is abused by a customer. · Distraught, she takes her life with the sword being made for the customer.

· Another story involves a prostitute who treated clients with respect and honesty.

· The third tells of a woman carved into a wall, about whom men said she was the only honest woman living in the district.

· Another legend involves Nicolo Lion, a prosecutor who fell ill and recovered after eating lettuce leaves from the Franciscan convent garden. In gratitude, he built the Church of San Niccolò in 1332, which became known as the Church of Lettuce.

Unfortunately, the church has now disappeared, so you can’t add it to your travel bucket list.

Vivaldi helped Anna Maria by paying for her first violin, made by Niccolò Amati, an Italian master luthier from Cremona. Follow in her footsteps and visit the Astronomical Clock on the Torrazzo belltower.

How many other talented women have been overlooked from this era because of male dominance? We know about composers like Fanny Mendelssohn, whose work was often overshadowed by her brother Felix, and Francesca Caccini, one of the first women to compose operas but largely forgotten outside specialist circles. Think, too, of Barbara Strozzi, whose prolific music output in seventeenth-century Venice still receives only a fraction of the acclaim granted to her male peers. Their stories remind us that behind every famous name, there may be hidden voices whose contributions have yet to be fully recognized. Ann Maria date of birth is unknown. It is believed to be c.1696. She died in Venice in 1782, so had a long life and remained at the orphanage her whole life. That redemption can be found in the unlikeliest of places?”

“No,” the vagrant shrugged. “Someone in Melbourne probably chose it from a catalogue to give the town some character. I just appreciate the story.”

• Australia is home to 10 native kingfisher species, including the iconic laughing kookaburra. They live in diverse habitats, from coastal mangroves to inland dry forests. These brightly coloured birds have a varied diet of insects, reptiles, and fish, and nest in tree hollows or termite mounds.

• Termite Mound Nesters: The Forest Kingfisher and others use their beaks to bore nesting tunnels into arboreal termite nests (often 4–12m high), providing a safe, insulated home

• Migration Journeys: Many, including the Sacred Kingfisher, migrate seasonally between Australia and New Guinea/Indonesia, returning south in spring to breed.

• Cultural Significance: Indigenous Australian stories often highlight kingfishers; for example, the Wurundjeri people saw them as carriers of spirits.

• Territorial Hunters: They are ambush predators, often found sitting very still on a low branch before swooping down on prey.

• This turquoise-green kingfisher can be found in open forests, around lakes, mudflats, streams, parks, golf courses, and near garden ponds.

Less than 12 kilometres away, we are off to the Big Golden Dragon Lotus in Bendigo, which is mainly painted red.

• It’s India’s national flower.

• The lotus has been historically used for medicinal purposes, such as a pain reliever and for alleviating muscle spasms.

• A special feature around Lotus Lake is the exclusive Golden Lotus exhibit. This double yellow flower has more petals than any other lotus here. Its color and 88 petals are significant to Chinese people. In Chinese culture, 88 means good fortune—hence the name “lucky lotus.”

Bendigo, located 130 km northwest of Melbourne, is a premier Australian gold rush city founded in 1851 after gold was discovered in Bendigo Creek. Formerly known as Sandhurst, it was a major worldwide attraction. Known for its opulence and Chinese heritage, Bendigo is now a vibrant UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy.

Share Around the World in 90 days

After exploring the Italian Happiness Habits together, I hope you’re feeling more positive. But you might be wondering: why are some places better at happiness than others?

The top three countries for 2025 were:

1. Finland

2. Denmark

3. Iceland.

Let’s look at what makes up the Global Happiness ratings, and later we can share our thoughts when we visit.

How are these happiness rankings calculated? What steps or methods are used?

The data comes from the Gallup World Poll, which looks at people’s attitudes, behaviors, and well-being. It focuses on daily life quality and feelings. Each country’s ranking is based on a three-year average.

In 2025, there was a big focus on how caring and sharing affect people’s happiness.

Caring and sharing benefit both the giver and the receiver.

Do you agree? It doesn’t have to be a big gift or money—every little bit helps.

Have you ever cleaned out your cupboard and found things you haven’t used in ages? If they’re still in good shape, you can donate them to charity. I do this regularly when I declutter my villa. I’ve seen women sleeping on concrete, with only a few belongings, or living in cars in safe parking lots. Some people, out of pride, might refuse direct help, but donating to charity lets them keep their dignity and make their own choices. When I drop off my things at the local charity shop, I feel good knowing they’ll find a new home and bring joy to someone else.

Did you know that when researchers dropped wallets on purpose, people returned them much more often than expected? Maybe we’re too pessimistic about others.

Did you know that COVID-19 led to a rise in kindness, according to research? This ‘benevolence bump’ has lasted, which is a positive outcome for those who care and share.

As with all my newsletters, I set out curious and hopeful to find out what makes Finland the world’s happiness leader for the eighth year in a row!

Finland has been at the top of my bucket list for a long time, and I’m excited to visit in 2027. I discovered that the government has strong values, but I wondered if they really follow them. Their education system teaches media literacy to children, focusing more on learning than on testing. I think this helps people spot ‘fake news’ and make better decisions.

But what really caught my attention was:

• Sisu: a word that sums up Finland.

‘Sisu’ is a Finnish word that can’t be directly translated. Writers have been searching for an equivalent since 1940.

Some writers even call it the soul of the country.

Etymologically, ‘sisu’ comes from a Finnish root word that implies ‘inner’ or ‘inside’.

That’s why it’s sometimes translated as ‘guts’ or ‘inner strength’.

In her book ‘Sisu: The Finnish Art of Courage’, Joanna Nylund says, ‘it can be referred to as stoic determination, hardiness, courage, bravery, willpower, tenacity and resilience. It’s an action-oriented mindset. You don’t brag about having sisu; you just let your actions do the talking.’

Sisu shows up when you face tough challenges, like fighting a war in a cold winter. It helps physical and mental well-being by encouraging good communication with your spouse, family, and colleagues. It’s a foundation for an active, healthy life, helps you reach your goals, and might even boost happiness.

Finland has created what it calls an “infrastructure of happiness,” which is a network of cultural and social institutions that support both individuals and communities.

Are you convinced, or do you want to see for yourself, like I do? Maybe I just need a little extra encouragement to visit.

But after doing some more research, I think I’d fit right in.

More Saunas Than Cars: Finland has over 3 million saunas, which is more than one for every two people. Saunas are a big part of Finnish culture. I might even try cold water bathing, as long as there’s a sauna nearby!

Highest Coffee Consumption: Finns drink more coffee than anyone else in the world, about 12 kg (26 lbs) per person each year. I also need my daily coffee!

“Everyman’s Right” (Jokamiehenoikeus): This law lets anyone roam, hike, ski, and pick berries or mushrooms in nature, even on private land, as long as they don’t cause damage. I love the freedom to wander and pick.

Land of 188,000 Lakes: Finland has about 188,000 lakes, making it one of the most water-rich countries in the world. That’s a lot of water to explore!

Midnight Sun & Polar Night: In Northern Finland, the sun stays up for 74 days straight in summer. In winter, it doesn’t rise for weeks, a time called ‘Kaamos’. That means longer days for exploring!

Champion of Wacky Sports: Finland is known for its unique championships, like wife-carrying, hobbyhorsing, and mosquito hunting. I think mosquito hunting would be fun to watch!

A “Homey” Official Airport: The official Santa Claus lives in Finnish Lapland and you can visit him all year in Rovaniemi. I’ve always loved Christmas!

The First to Vote: Finland was the first European country to let women vote, back in 1906. That’s a big win for women’s rights!

High-Quality Education: Finnish schools focus on learning instead of testing, with little or no homework. They’re always ranked among the best in the world. I love the idea that you’re never too old to learn or travel!

Finns, get ready—Judy will proudly join you in 2027!

Does that mean Queensland won the State of Origin again?!

Now that we’ve discussed the background, let’s see how Victoria fares.

A little bit on Victoria: Originally the Port Phillip District of New South Wales, it became a separate British colony in 1851 after the 1830s pastoral settlement. The 1850s gold rush spurred population growth and prosperity, transforming Melbourne into a major hub before Victoria joined the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901.

The official state flower of Victoria is the Common Heath (Epacris impressa), specifically the pink-flowered form. Proclaimed in 1958, it was the first Australian state floral emblem. This shrub has pink tubular flowers and grows in woodlands and heaths. The flowers appear from late winter to early spring. spring.

This time I’m not in the driver’s seat, you can work out your own itinerary, so I decided to start down south on the Mornington Peninsula, Baxter.

There was an old woman who lived in a shoe. She had so many children, she didn’t know what to do. She gave them some broth without any bread, and whipped them all soundly and put them to bed.

Views of the underlying meaning of the rhyme

· Political Satire: A prominent theory suggests the “old woman” was King George II of Great Britain, who was often viewed as having an inefficient, large “family” (the government). The “children” represent Members of Parliament (MPs) that he could not control, and the “whipping” was his demand for strict party-line voting.

· Poverty and Overpopulation: The rhyme illustrates a likely, real-world scenario of extreme poverty. The “shoe” symbolises inadequate shelter, and the “bread without any broth” emphasises severe lack of resources to support a large family.

What does our Land of the Bigs say? Diehard Big Thing aficionados dream of living inside a giant roadside attraction. There are few cosier homes than this giant jogger. Sure, it’s a little rundown, but it has lovely feet-ure windows and boot-iful views of the Mooraduc Highway. I have a sneaker-ing suspicion you’ll agree it’s prime heel estate!

The Big Shoe set tongues wagging in 1967. That year, the Bata Shoe Company unveiled it as a float for the Frankston Australia Day parade. Apparently, Bata’s managing director, Mr Gordon Thring, and his nephew Roger snoozed in the sandal the night before. They did so to ward off any ill-tempered thugs who might have tried to damage their creation.1

Maybe it solves the housing shortage: if she had many children, perhaps families could house-share?

Some shoe facts—more about feet than homes.

· Prehistoric Origins (c. 40,000+ years ago): Changes in human toe bones indicate that early, soft-soled footwear or wraps were used to protect feet from cold and rough terrain.

· Oldest Leather Shoe (c. 5,500 years ago): A well-preserved, stitched cowhide shoe was found in an Armenian cave.

· Middle Ages to Renaissance (14th-17th Century): Shoes became more structured with hardened soles. In the 16th century, heels were introduced to raise feet above street filth. Facebook notes that high heels became a symbol of status and wealth.

So, let’s go for a wander. My immediate choice is Baxter cottage, then I think we can check out the others.

Discover TREAND at Baxter Valley Estate, a small boutique winery located at the top of the Mornington Peninsula.

Cripps Family Fish Farm is a family-friendly farm on the picturesque Mornington Peninsula.

Sages Cottage Farm dates back to the 1850s and has heritage-protected buildings and grounds. Captain Benjamin Baxter arrived at Port Melbourne from County Cork, Ireland, in 1837 and became the first European settler in the Mornington Peninsula district.

What a great start – a bit of history, fish and chips for nourishment, then a glass of wine to wash it down.

Please don’t overindulge and end up with wobbly shoes!

Where to next, Hamilton? No, not the stage show.

The Bigs here might be combined: one is edible, the other could have been. Maybe early settlers originally did so.

The Big Bandicoot? More like The Big Bandi-CUTE! This hyperactive heartbreaker is the beloved mascot of the Bandicoot Motor Inn, just minutes from Hamilton’s vibrant centre. Caught forever in mid-stride, the mega-sized marsupial is poised to bound its way into your heart.

Whimsical, cheeky and deliciously kitsch, the Bandicoot stands out against the backdrop of this classic mid-60s guesthouse.

If you haven’t heard of bandicoots, they are Australia’s most widespread peramelid. A bandicoot is like an adorable rat with a pointy nose and big hind legs built for jumping. The males have unique appendages, but those are not shown here.

Unique Pouch Structure: Female bandicoots have backward-opening pouches. This design keeps dirt and soil out of the pouch while they are digging in the ground.

“Pig-Rat” Origins: The name “bandicoot” is derived from a Telugu word, pandi-kokku, meaning “pig-rat.”

Signature Diggings: They leave distinct cone-shaped holes, 70 mm deep, in lawns when searching for food.

High Jumpers: When startled, they can jump up to 6 feet in the air and emit a high-pitched squeak.

The biggest threats to bandicoots are habitat loss and predators like foxes, cats, and dogs.

It’s hard not to like an animal associated with the phrase ‘snout pokes’. As bandicoots forage for underground insects and larvae, they leave behind a series of small conical holes – snout pokes!

No, we are not going to write a Bandicoot Pie Recipe. But we could incorporate another nursery rhyme.

What is your favourite pie? I am a bit biased, as my parents made the Best Pies in Australia in Gladstone in the 1960s and 1970s. My favourite was the fish made on Fridays for practising Catholics. They had a different variety of meat pies every day, as well as fruit pies. Gladstone was experiencing a boom, and housing was in short supply. Most people resorted to caravans, and Mum used to drive around the caravan park with her ‘cow bell’ ringing and selling pies as fast as they could make them.

I haven’t tried King’s Bakery & Café, but my parents made the best!

Did you know that pies were really coffins for preserving meat?

Pie history spans thousands of years. It originated with ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman civilisations, who used primarily inedible, grain-based crusts to preserve meat and fruit. The dish evolved from savoury medieval “coffins” to modern sweet desserts. Pies became a staple of European, Australian, and American cuisine. The first recorded apple pie recipe appeared in 1381.

For some of us, this will be easy. We slowly and methodically write lists of strengths, weaknesses, pros, or cons before making decisions. What discipline!

Others, we will need practice. I know one time when I rushed into a major decision due to frustration after months of searching with no results – I regretted it. Nothing went right after I made the rushed decision, and I couldn’t get out of it. It cost me thousands of dollars – but I learnt a lesson. Festina Lente for me now!

Here’s a simple method that helps me avoid rushing into decisions: when you feel pressure to decide quickly, pause and take three deep breaths, or step away for a short walk. Writing down your options in a notebook or journaling about your feelings for even five minutes can help clarify what really matters. Giving yourself even a small window to reflect often leads to better choices and more peace of mind.

Maybe I should have practised Sprezzatura, and I would have had a better outcome.

Lessons – Do difficult things with quiet confidence. Refine your skills until they look natural. True elegance is subtle, not loud.

To me, effortless excellence requires practice. Picture a musician performing beautifully. You close your eyes and feel each note. The musician refined their skills, tackled difficult passages, and practised until they were quietly confident.

Some simple things I practise daily –

Since I got my new kitchen, I take pride in a nightly ritual. Before I retire, I make sure all dishes are in the dishwasher, appliances are in the drawer, and surfaces are clean and clutter-free. Every morning, I wake up, walk out to make breakfast, and smile with pride at my kitchen sparkling in the morning light, ready for another day.

Clutter causes stress because you often can’t find things! You may already do this, but if you make it a habit, even in times when you are tired and just want to sleep, you will be rewarded in the morning.

Have you ever weeded the garden, come inside, and felt a twinge in your back? Then you remind yourself that movement helps your muscles and just straighten up. You gaze at your garden with pride and often receive compliments from neighbours on the other side of the fence.

Those compliments are showing respect for you.

Speak of the Devil – Lupus in Fabula

Lessons – Always speak about others with respect. Be mindful of your words. Life is unpredictable – expect the unexpected.

Life is unpredictable – we have limited control. But we can control our words and how we treat others.

Don’t engage in gossip – be like me and walk away or turn your ears and mouth off!

I know we can all get caught off guard when unexpected events happen and they feel like someone has stabbed you in the heart, but you need to use your habits before you react.

For example, you will meet people who appear aloof or bossy to you but try to understand that we all have different personalities. You can use mindfulness and respectful words when engaging or disengaging. Always remember this when travelling - sometimes behaviour and mannerisms are part of their culture. Some tourism's, not travellers, forget respect!

I’m often surprised! Often, these people don’t even realise the impact of their behaviour or words.

In some of my recent newsletters, we’ve discussed travelling thoughtfully, slowing down, and all the benefits of travelling. This year, there is a clear longing among travellers for slow, restorative escapes—a chance to step away from the rush and truly unwind. So, what about future trends? Let’s look at three ways the weary traveller is reclaiming calm in 2026.

Got your boots laced up? A new trend is called ‘Bootiquing’. Did it get your attention? It got mine! So, I kept reading the article – what is it? The more I read, the more I thought I’m going to try it! It’s a combination of hiking, glamping and luggage transfers. I love the outdoors and exploring on foot; I don’t like roughing it or sleeping on the ground in a tent; and, due to age, I find my back will give me grief if I overload it for too long!

What about peace and quiet? Quietcations, sometimes referred to as silent travel or hushpitality, might be for you. No technology, away from the noise, enjoying silence and solitude. Imagine rising early, the world still wrapped in mist, and stepping outside to stillness: no hum of traffic, just the wind tonguing the pines, the gentle splash of water against the path. It reminds me of monks and their code-of-silence retreats. I’m lucky, as I can do this if I want, any day: unplug, walk outside, follow the path along the waterways, and enjoy nature and less noise.

But if you want to experience more quiet and venture further afield, try Finland, Iceland, and Japan – they rank among the best countries for this offering. It’s not about ticking off places or activities. It’s about enjoying silence and solitude at your own pace.

Some resorts are also offering digital fasting and sealing phones in lockable pouches until you depart, replacing them with paper maps, wind-up alarm clocks, sketchpads and mindful mandalas.

As I mentioned, I’m fortunate to be able to unplug from technology and enjoy quiet anytime.

I’m going with bootiquing. So, off I go to get the best walking boots, I’ve got my walking poles, then put them on in some local practice, wear my boots in, choose a destination and book.

Step lighter, rest deeper, return renewed. In the words of Nancy Sinatra – ‘these boots are made for walking, and I’m going to walk all over you (World)... see you on the trail, unburdened and we’ll be rested!

Enjoy the change. As the saying goes, ‘a change is as good as a holiday’. Maybe you can sing the words of the song as you bootique off in your walking boots👢?!

Sustainable Travel is the top trend for 2026. But its focus has shifted from merely being eco-friendly to encompassing a broader definition that includes cultural sensitivity, economic impact, and community engagement. This change reflects a growing demand for travel experiences that are not only environmentally sustainable but also socially responsible, highlighting why 2026 is a pivotal year for this trend.

With this trend in mind, many places are being proactive, especially regarding the influx of overtourism. Some are limiting numbers and some are imposing fees, but these restrictions are also an opportunity to channel the collected funds into improving local livelihoods. For example, fees collected in certain regions are being used to support community projects like building schools or maintaining local heritage sites, ensuring that the benefits of tourism are felt by everyone. Additionally, some are developing sustainable, eco-friendly options that balance tourist appeal with community well-being.

I know that when I went on my trip, I wanted to see all the usual landmarks, since I was a late starter in exploring the world.

You can still do both. Go off-season and stay outside your main destination. Live with the locals and commute using public transport. You could also house swap.

Another option is exploring cultural heritage - you can connect with traditions, different foods and their creative practices.

When I was in Japan, we immersed ourselves in the tradition of soba noodle-making. It was such fun seeing the guys slice the dough so precisely, so slowly. The best part afterwards was that our noodles were our lunch... the most delicious melt-in-your-mouth I’ve ever tasted. Not skiting at all.

With some cultures, you may end up with a Shelf-ie souvenir. You made it and will be able to share and show for many generations – your culture creation, sitting in pride of place on your bookshelf.

With today’s travellers prioritising depth, integrity, and off-the-beaten-track experiences, they usually find they get more bang for their buck. Secondary places are usually cheaper, and you may be able to incorporate a digital detox by staying outdoors, such as in a glamping tent and being closer to nature.

You might also choose to book a local guide for your next destination to deepen cultural engagement and support the local economy. Let us lessen the luggage load and loathing.

Do you rush to the luggage carousel only to do laps to find a space to grab your luggage before it does another lap?

Do you take a ‘loo break’ on landing first and lounge around so you don’t have to ‘fight’ for luggage collection grab space?

Or do you try to take carry-on only and are finding your exit whilst others are looking longingly for their luggage to lap past?

I feel very fortunate that I’ve only had one instance of lost luggage and one of delayed in all my travels.

My lost luggage, remember, was my borrowed red sleeping bag, on my World trip on arrival in Africa, my first stop. But surprisingly after my three-month trip it had beaten me back home, after my daughter had picked it up at the Brisbane airport.

My delayed luggage was on arrival in China and turned up 24 hours later. So I only had my first night without a change of clothes.

Both positive outcomes, eventually.

Are you aware that some travel insurance policies may cover these occurrences?

How do you feel and have you witnessed the over-head carry-on abusers – moving others correct sized and weight bags and stuffing their over-sized overweight bag into the lockers. They remind me of weight-lifters straining to do their clean and jerk weight lift over their heads.

There is an airline trend now that may stop some of these ‘weight-lifters for the privilege overhead lockers by charging for all carry-on luggage.

Have you thought about the extra time it takes for everyone to secure their luggage on board and what about the extra weight? The cost to the airlines has been estimated at extra 10-15 minutes per flight, thus reducing the number flights per day.

It’s best to check your specific airline for sizes and weight requirements. If caught airlines may off-load and your luggage may end up on another flight without you.

One way to lighten your luggage load is when packing and by choosing a light-weight case.

Some top tips for packing

• Have a list

• Pack matching items or multifunction items

• Go for mini-size toiletries

• Roll your clothes

• Use packing pods (more for organisation)

• Include valuables, medications, spare undies, toiletries and tech chargers in carry-on

• Place toiletries in zip plastic bag and insert into shoes

• Wear your bulkiest clothes and heaviest shoes on the plane

• Make earrings your bling accessory as they don’t take up much space or weight

• Remember, you may never see other travellers again and they won’t know if you are wearing something again.

Some funny stories I found

‘My backpack once came off the belt absolutely soaked in someone else’s bottle of whisky. I smelt like an alcoholic for a while…”

“American Airlines also once told me my luggage was completely lost and not in the back room full of lost luggage. After trying to convince them for a full 20 minutes to just let me look around they let me in – only to find that my luggage was literally right inside the door. Ugh.”

One of the many benefits of travelling is – it shows you how to cope with challenges and gives you perspective on what is important in the world. It forces you out of your comfort zone. It also teaches you patience. Like everything in life you can choose how you react when your luggage ‘appears to have taken a different journey to you’.

But using common sense, you’ll have a change of clothes in your carry-on and like me be lucky enough for your luggage to catch up to you.

Instead of flying, you could go on a cruise. Wheel your luggage into your cabin and unpack. No waiting at carousels, done until it’s time to go home.

There are now some bags that are fully trackable July Traceable Luggage. Maybe that is the solution or you could minimise your luggage to carry-on only. Is that what the ‘weightlifters’ are already doing?
