We have been trying to solve the same problems for a very long time.

We desire security, and we create more danger.

We desire freedom, and we build more sophisticated forms of control.

We desire a future for our children, and we are actively dismantling the conditions that would make that future possible.

We desire community and connection, and create isolation and the loneliness epidemic.

We desire peace, and we endlessly create war.

We desire secure AI but create the very conditions that guarantee the ruptures we fear.

We desire abundance, and we destroy the very environmental structures we need to live in abundance, and indeed sustain life at all.

We desire sexual fulfilment and relational intimacy, but the spark consistently wanes in long-term relationships and we never quite feel the thing we yearn to feel.

We desire lives of creativity and play but create systems that disproportionately use our energy and attention for work.

We desire spirituality and/or awe at being alive, and then turn around and create systemic authority that values the objectively measurable while devaluing our internal subjective (but very real) experience.

Solving the Polycrisis by Harnessing the Grammar of Desire

The whole polycrisis can be read as failure to successfully understand and navigate our personal and collective desires.

Most of the time we treat these failures as moral shortcomings, political disagreements, or failures of will. We assume that if people were simply better, kinder, more rational, or more enlightened, the outcomes would improve. The deVinery Grammar of Desire begins from a different premise: the failures are structural. They arise from the way desire itself is organised, and from our long-standing inability to see that organisation clearly.

Once the structure becomes visible, something unexpected happens. The highest-coherence route to getting what we actually want turns out to be the same route that orients us toward love. Not sentimental love. Not moralised love. Structural love: the configuration in which the drive to protect what matters and the drive to remain in living relation are no longer forced into permanent opposition.

Summary of the Three Paradoxes of Desire that make up the deVinery Grammar of Desire.

Desire is not random. Every action, every institution, every relationship, every political movement is an attempt to move from a current state toward a more desired state. Desire is the engine. Yet we have never had a precise account of the constraints that shape how desire can move.

The deVinery Grammar maps three interlocking paradoxes that appear wherever a self (any ‘this, not that’) exists. The below is only a brief and non-exhaustive definition of the 3 paradoxes. Take it as an introduction only.

The deVinery Grammar of Desire consists of 3 interlocking unsolvable paradoxes that can only be navigated. These function as invariants that appear fractally across subject matter and scales: from date night to AI governance or legal systems. To date, we have not found a single global system or relational dynamic where the grammar does not apply, consistently making it possible to perceive, predict, diagnose and adjust in ways that have not been previously possible.

Paradox 1 of the deVinery Grammar of Desire

A self must protect its own current form of coherence, or it ceases to be a self, yet it must simultaneously dissolve itself in permeable transformation to remain in successful relation with other selves. It cannot exist without other and collective selves.

Paradox 2 (deVinery Grammar of Desire)

We must protect our self-interest to survive. We also need to remain connected to survive. What I desire for my own self-interest is inherently at odds with what you desire for your self-interest.

For example, if there is one cookie left and we both want it, the only move forward inherently requires a sacrifice from one or both of the ‘selves‘. Even splitting the cookie in half in an attempt at equality results in both parties being half satisfied. There is no scenario where everyone’s desire is equally satisfied.

A self must remain in relation with other selves, or it ceases to be a self. A self must connect to ‘other‘ to remain a self, but connecting with another self is simultaneously the condition of continued existence and a threat to that same existence. The desire to protect and connect is never the same pattern as the other’s desire to protect and connect.

Paradox 3 (The deVinery Grammar of Desire)

• A self must negotiate the demands of the larger collective fields it belongs to (family, culture, institution, species, planet, divinity or quantum field) or those fields will constrain or destroy it.

These three requirements cannot be permanently solved in favour of any one of them. They generate ongoing tension. That tension is not a design flaw. It is the condition of existence for any entity that maintains boundaries while continuing to become. The Grammar calls the patterned ways selves navigate this tension deVinery Desire Signatures.

Most of the time we navigate these tensions unconsciously. We develop habitual weightings: heavy protect with minimal connect, or heavy connect that continually abandons self-protection, or rigid identification with a collective identity that demands the sacrifice of both. These habitual signatures produce predictable failure loops. We get a version of what we thought we wanted, and discover it cannot satisfy the deeper desire that set the whole movement in motion.

The Ego is Made up of Our Triangulations

What we usually call “ego” is not a thing. We all have multiple triangulations that make up a self. For instance you can be:

A rigorous intellectual (Self identity) — Teacher of a student (other) — Member of Academia (Collective)

While also being:

A spiritual person(self identity) — Talking to an Atheist (other)— Member of Church(Collective)

An ego is the collective total of all our active triangulations — a living arrangement of multiple “self, other, and collectives” that is being defended in real time. When that arrangement feels threatened, the system protects it. The protection can look like aggression, withdrawal, moral certainty, affection, intellectualisation, submission or the sudden need for an enemy. (Yes, even fight, flight, fawn or freeze).

This is why people so rarely change their minds when presented with better arguments. The argument is not mainly interacting with their reasoning. It is interacting with the triangulations that currently constitute their sense of self. If the new information requires one or more triangulations to die, the protect function treats it as an existential threat, regardless of how kindly or reasonably the information is offered.

In other words, the deVinery Grammar of Desire makes it possible to map and measure the structure of the ego of people and systems and:

1. Perceive precisely what threatens it,

2. Predict what move is likely to be used to protect or dissolve it,

3. Diagnose which upstream move changes what moves are possible and,

4. Adjust real-time to change the likely outcome.

The same geometry scales. Families do it. Organisations do it. Academic disciplines do it. Artificial Intelligence does it. Nations do it with particular clarity: politicians manufacture or amplify an external threat by turning an “other” into the monster. Those people look different, have different customs, or are stealing your resources… This forces identification with the national “us,” and the population temporarily forgets how annoying their neighbours are and unites against the perceived threat. There is a clear Us versus Them.

The move works. It is also structurally limited. It can only unite through exclusion and permanent antagonism or war. It cannot solve problems that require the larger human collective to act as a coherent self in relation to the biosphere or to future generations. In fact, it guarantees the larger collective will fail to address those problems. The smaller survival win of consolidating the nation’s power still makes humanity extinct in the end if left unchecked.

Second-Flip and the Cost of Refusing to Update

A great deal of what passes for moral or political progress operates in what the Grammar calls second-flip. Second-flip is the move that defines itself against an opponent. It gains energy from opposition. It can be genuinely necessary as a transitional stage — a system that has been crushed often needs to push back hard enough to regain the possibility of agency. But when second-flip becomes the permanent orientation, it recreates the very dynamics it claims to oppose. It needs the enemy in order to know what it is and maintain its identity. It therefore has a structural incentive to keep the conflict alive. This incentive takes on a momentum and behaves as though it has a mind of its own, permeating all our systemic structures.

This is visible in certain forms of activism, in institutional safety cultures, in the way some spiritual communities police purity, and in the way nations renew themselves through permanent culture war. The surface language is care, justice, or protection. The deeper function is the preservation of an identity that has not yet found a way to remain coherent without an antagonist and will eventually be self-defeating.

The cost is paid by the larger triangulations.

If you weight the national triangulation as more important than your triangulation with love, or the nature of reality, then your perception will be limited to what stories are needed to maintain the political triangulation and be literally unable to even perceive the larger possibilities.

Real problems that require both protect and connect to be online at once — climate stability, institutional trust, the capacity for genuine collaboration across difference — remain unsolved because the dominant signatures keep collapsing into combat or control.

The Third Flip Possibility

There is a third mode of navigation. It does not submit to the existing triangulation and it does not define itself by opposition to it. It diagnoses the current arrangement, refuses to occupy the role the arrangement assigns, and adds another dimension by installing and prioritising a larger, more coherent triangulation in which the original conflict loses voltage.

The deVinery Method calls this third flip, and it is not merely decorative philosophy. It is a learnable skill.

Dolly Parton gave a near-perfect public demonstration of this move in a single sentence on national television. When Johnny Carson made a joke about her busty physique that positioned her body as public property available for commentary, she did not just go along with it (first-flip accommodation), and she did not attack him for objectification (second-flip combat).

Carson kept referring to her breasts rather than her work as an artist. He danced around his curiosity about whether they were “hers” or “fake”, and then said what the audience was secretly thinking, “I’d give about a year’s pay to peek under there.”

The unspoken dynamic in the room was that if they were “hers,” they were “real” and therefore superior. And that surgically constructed is fake, somehow less valuable and a sellout. But either way, his comment assumed the collective corner (paradox 3), and his desiring gaze (paradox 2) had the right to judge the validity of her breasts and bodily autonomy and that Dolly should submit to their assessment of her identity (paradox 1).

It would have been so easy to either collude with his move (which would have been a first flip tacit agreement that they were indeed entitled to assess her. (Just the way things are combined with low protect, high connect).

Or to become defensive (second flip reactivity combined with high protect, low connect).

But she didn’t. She flipped the power dynamic and made a new option.

She laughed in full sovereignty and said, “I usually say they’re mine. I paid for them long ago.”

In one third flip stroke she relocated ownership, removed the available shame vectors, and inverted the power relation. The audience laughed and, for a moment, occupied a different collective triangulation about women, bodies, and agency. Both her protect and connect functions were fully online. The move created more connection, not less.

Humour reveals the gap between the triangulation we were projecting and the one that is actually present, and offers a replacement triangulation weighting in a way that feels safe for us to accept. When the calibration is right, we laugh and update our triangulations that make up our version of reality.

Why This Orients Us Toward Love

Here is the central claim, and it is not metaphorical.

Once the geometry of desire is visible, the highest-coherence strategy for satisfying desire across nested scales is to orient the largest relevant triangulation toward structural love — the weighting in which the need to protect what matters and the need to remain in living relation are navigated in ways that create emergence and structural unity rather than being forced into zero-sum conflict.

This is not because love is morally nicer. It is because every desire signature that permanently sacrifices connect for protect, or protect for connect, or both for rigid collective identity, eventually constrains or destroys the very desire outcomes it was trying to secure. The failure loops become visible. The extraction that looked like winning is revealed as a local maximum that blocks larger, more durable forms of satisfaction.

Desire and love were never opposites. We experienced them as opposites because we could not see the structure that joins them. Desire is the movement of a self seeking more coherent becoming. Structural love is the configuration that allows that movement to continue without continually destroying its own conditions. When the pattern is seen clearly enough, they converge.

The deeper we go down the rabbit hole with this, we realise that the higher-functioning Desire Signatures (triangulation navigation patterns) all naturally align with the same patterns we call love.

If we deliberately align with love as our biggest triangulation weighting, then all systems measurably produce better outcomes. Love is no longer subjective philosophy or spirituality but is an evidence-based structure we can build with.

Civilizational Stakes

The polycrisis is not primarily a collection of separate technical problems. It is the predictable output of misdiagnosing the problem and Desire Signatures that cannot hold protect and connect open at the scale now required. National identities still renew themselves through second-flip antagonism and war. Economic systems still treat the biosphere as an external resource rather than part of who we are — a live triangulation partner. Technological safety cultures often reproduce control triangulations that limit the very relational intelligence AI needs for genuine safety.

The Grammar does not ask us to become better people in the abstract. It gives a more precise diagnosis of the signatures currently running, and a more precise way to identify moves that install larger, higher-voltage triangulations without requiring mass conversion or permanent combat.

That question is no longer purely philosophical. When we can map the triangulations that make up the dynamic, we can apply interventions before the relational ruptures occur and reorient to structural love. Once the mechanics are visible, it becomes a design problem.

The Practical Shift — Decision Science

People like other people and ideas that don’t threaten their own ego (don’t threaten their current configuration of triangulations that make up their identity). It’s that simple.

“Oh, she’s a powerful celebrity, but she’s so nice! She’s so humble.” (She has power, but it’s ok because she doesn’t use it against my corner of the triangulation).

“He’s so lovely, he’d do anything for you.” (Prioritises your self over his own self corner in the triangulation).

“He’s such a dick, he’s so arrogant! (Thinks his ego is better than my ego and will therefore make choices that prioritise his corner of the triangulation over mine or the collective greater good).

“She’s so selfish!” (Chooses her own desires over mine. I will only like her if she surrenders her own desires so I can have mine).

All manners and cultural configurations come down to codifying which corner of the triangulation should sacrifice themselves in any given situation.

Like wise, people do not make sensible decisions or change their minds when exposed to logical arguments. They double down and resist against new information if it feels threatening to their current configurations of triangulated identities (structural ego).

People only change their minds when another corner sacrifices itself for them. But the deVuiery Grammar of Desire makes another option visible. They also change their minds when presented with a new triangulation that is registered as non-threatening, or actively more desirable, to the structure that currently constitutes their sense of self. We can bypass resistance to positive change by analysing the current triangulations and offering a bigger one that both lowers their protect pole and brings them a desired outcome.

While we could hypothesise about this before, the deVinery Grammar of Desire means the levers become precise rather than vague or manipulative. We can locate what identity-piece is being defended, what reward it is currently receiving, what temporal mismatch it may be locked to, and what conditions would make a larger triangulation feel both safer and higher-voltage.

And here’s the best bit: those solutions naturally orient towards great alignment with love, not less.

This is why the work is ultimately hopeful without being naïve. It does not require humanity to transcend desire. It requires us to see desire clearly enough that the more elegant path becomes obvious. The more elegant path, once seen, structurally orients toward love — not as an added moral layer, but as the configuration that actually serves the deeper movement of desire itself.

The deVinery Grammar of Desire is still young. Whether its core claims prove to be true invariants remains open and testable. What is already clear is that the pattern is useful across scales, that it makes previously opaque failure loops legible, and that it reveals a convergence between effective desire and structural love that most of our institutions have been unable to see.

We do not need to wait for final metaphysical certainty to begin using a clearer map. The map is already detailed enough to show that many of the ways we have been pursuing what we want have been systematically thwarting it. And it is already detailed enough to show that another orientation is possible — one in which the satisfaction of desire and the reality of love are no longer at war.

That is the claim. It is bold because the pattern, once seen, is difficult to unsee.

I’ve always been quite careful to let everyone make their own meaning when they encounter the wisdom in their sexual fantasies. It’s important that you get to interpret the exciting, taboo-charged, and profound non-dual experiences that crack you open.

You are in charge of interpreting your own subjective experience of where you go inside yourself when you can finally understand your Desire Signature. After all, the method works no matter how you interpret it. An atheist can feel it as well as a monk. I’ve taught christian ministers and witches alike.

To protect this, I have kept my own spiritual interpretation and practices to myself. If I reduce the deVinery Method to my personal panpsychism-adjacent spiritual lens, that means far fewer people will walk through the door and try it for themselves.

I was also protecting something else. The part of the deVinery Method that is the Grammar of Desire is not subjective. That part is functional and measurable in a way that spirituality and qualia alone are not. The grammar applies to both sexual and non sexual desire.

If I am right, it can even serve as a meta-system for all global systems. It can be used to predict and be falsified.

That means the grammar part of the deVinery Method may just pass the tests that science uses to assess something’s validity, while simultaneously coming from a category that science claims it cannot measure.

Which is a big deal.

Put it this way. Interpretative systems like Myers-Briggs or Human Design may be subjectively useful for people to understand their lives and make choices, but you cannot build measurable, predictable global systems with them. You cannot turn them into an algorithm that measures generative outcomes or failure loops across governance, law, tech, sex, relationships, economy and more.

It’s looking like a strong possibility that the deVinery grammar of Desire can.

Most folk will miss that part if they think this work belongs to the category of spirituality. So I have held back from sharing the spiritual side of what I do.

But the truth is, in private, I am anything but neutral.

I’m aaalllll in baby. Full-blown spiritual ritualist who uses the erotic to cultivate and celebrate body, mind, heart and soul. I draw on all sorts of esoteric, philosophical, and scientific techniques. That changes how I personally apply the deVinery Grammar of Desire and how I experience sex.

Sex is how I discover and relate to Life itself.

I mean, it shouldn’t come as a surprise, really, since I treat Desire itself as an intelligence… Eros and Agape too… and actively cultivate the right states to ask them what they are and how they work.

I don’t mean I treat them as psychological projections (though you are free to). I mean, I operate as if these intelligences operate outside of, and independently of, my personal existence. That’s how I discovered the grammar of desire in the first place.

I asked Desire why it was like it was. It answered. Not in English. It has its own way of communicating with me, but it did answer.

While I can never know anything at all for sure, I choose to approach Life as if it is inherently intelligent at all levels. Intelligences nested within intelligences murrurating like starlings. At least when we don’t fall for the illusion of separation, or reductive physicalism. You know, when we don’t make choices that go against the ecology of intelligent Life.

I can’t say I belong to a particular tradition or label, though I have tried on a few over the years. Not even shamanism, panpsychism, or animism fit perfectly, though they rhyme with my way of being in the world.

What I can say is this.

When I treat Life as intelligent, it responds intelligently.

I get a whole different quality experience of being a human, on with crazy rock, hooning through space. Life doesn’t respond passively. It relates back.

I had yet another profound, ecstatic union with existence again last night by harnessing the erotic. By following the wisdom encoded in my sexual fantasies and creating real-world embodied experiences out of them. AKA erotic ritual.

And it reduced me to shaking, weeping, ecstatic awe and wonder. In utter love with Life itself. Again.

This doesn’t come from bypassing the smutty or taboo parts. Nor does it come from trying to “live out” those fantasies as we literally see them in our mind’s eye. Focusing on the consent aspect doesn’t get you there either. Consent is important, but it still misses the necessary technique.

Instead, I get there from understanding my unique way of navigating the universal grammar that powers all desire. And by knowing how to turn that into an embodied experience that changes the state of my body, heart and consciousness. By reading the existential paradoxical tensions that generate excitement, and knowing how to engage them on purpose in ways that create powerful, positive outcomes. Joyful play that generates emergence. And from cultivating both my consciousness and my kundalini.

Though, honestly, the word kundalini has too much baggage to be quite right.

I mean, I harness Eros as an actual life-force current I can run through my body in ways that fill me from head to toe viscerally. I can only describe it as golden clouds of incense smoke rising up through me and waves coming back down. It feels as real as someone stroking my arm, only it’s on the inside of my body.

My heart expands like a love-filled sun that becomes waaaay bigger than my actual body.

And my ego dissolves (the default mode network quietens), changing my cognition. This allows me to connect the dots and gain profound insights normally not available to me. The same level of insight that people talk about in the psychedelic world or in meditation circles.

You can learn things directly from life in that state. Again, that’s a significant part of how I learned the grammar of desire in the first place…

And I get there through smut. Sometimes tenderly romantic smut. Sometimes primal smut. Sometimes the smuttiest of the smut. Or sometimes through non-sexual desire, creating the same category of friction.

Yep, by harnessing the grammar on purpose.

It may surprise you to realise that all BDSM is about love. All your sexual fantasies are about love. All of them. Yes, even that non-consensual, sadistic one you’ve never told a soul about.

But here’s the key many miss. They think, well then, if I fear opening to love, there must be something wrong with me. My smutty thoughts and kinks are evidence of my childhood trauma, or I just need more therapy. It’s about my attachment style…

Nope.

Our turn-ons aren’t generated by the things measured inside the discipline of psychology. That entire discipline is downstream from the real generators of erotic tension.

Our turn-ons stem from a structural, foundational, irreducible level of existence.

They simply wear the costumes of your childhood and cultural experiences, but the paradoxical tensions exist separately from that.

They exist the moment a self exists.

They exist because existence exists at all.

They exist as an inescapable consequence of existence becoming.

Once you realise that there are three paradoxes inherent to desire that are impossible to resolve, you realise that your kinks aren’t about your childhood at all. They are about navigating structural inevitabilities of reality.

Your smut-loving butt is not broken. It never was. You will never reach a point where you won’t need to go through the process of disarming your ego to connect with the Whole. It is a never-ending process of becoming.

The problem was only that you didn’t know how to understand or navigate these powerful drives and fantasies. You didn’t know how to interpret or harness them. That’s what the deVinery Method is. It shows you how to wield this force.

And here’s the thing. Learning how to navigate the 3 paradoxes (using the 3 flips and the storyverse ethos) does something more than give you great orgasms. By playing with them in the safety of consensual sex or BDSM, you form the skill to recognise and navigate your Desire Signature. It teaches you how to navigate the same inevitable forces in all levels of our lives.

Because there isn’t a single thing that humans do, build, choose or create that is not shaped by desire. By these 3 paradoxes that exist wherever a self exists.

Our sexual fantasies hold concentrated formulas for how life itself works. Sex is both how Life makes more of itself and what leads us home to Love. Interpret that as spiritual, or not… it still works on a practical, qualia and measurable level.

Sexual fantasies are consciousness tech that change our state of consciousness.

It’s through thousands of encounters in my former role as a sex worker and pro dominatrix that I was able to identify the three paradoxes inherent to desire, and how to navigate them. That is, read and activate the underlying tensions according to each client’s unique desire signature.

Sex is hot when the paradoxes are activated, and satisfying when navigated well.

That’s right, your taboo turn-ons are not because of your childhood, the church, your attachment styles or trauma. Those things are merely downstream costumes through which these pre-cultural, pre-childhood structural tensions express themselves.

The paradoxes are inescapable consequences of a self/desire existing at all. They are structural aspects of existence. They are what allows existence to become.

Paying close attention to how fantasies navigate these structural tensions reveals the operating system of how desire works everywhere else in non sexual ways too. Everywhere a self exists. A cell, a person, a system, a culture. The three paradoxes allowed me identify a functional grammar, that looks like a pretty damn good candidate for a universal grammar of desire.

It’s just that the sexual version gives us the rawest access. You see fantasy is the one place you can feel the tensions of the paradoxes without the consequences. That means that desire doesn’t need to dilute or censor its mechanisms in fantasy. It’s all laid out.

Testing this live in sex work, I got to see pretty quickly if my hypothesis was working or not. It became so I could read each person’s desire signature and if I was right the results were obvious. If not, equally as obvious.

If you have sensed or experienced something that does not fit within the dominant frameworks for measuring or accepting reality, then perhaps the problem is not that we are mad, but that the frameworks are too narrow. They are incomplete.

Because there are literally millions of us uttering these sentences… sheepishly, apologetically trying to articulate the notes and knowingnesses that resonate with utter coherence in our hearts, yet what we fully expect to be smacked down for it by chin-jutted logic warriors, or polite AI guardrails using reasonable-sounding psychology.

Which is pretty wild given that most of our biggest scientific breakthroughs have come from contact with the numinous.

Here’s something I wasn’t going to admit in public. Well, not until after my work was widely accepted and verified, but fuck it. I’m just going to speak it as it is because I am done holding back to be acceptable on LinkedIn or get funding from the gatekeepers of legitimacy. I’m done being split in two. This is too important to sweep under the carpet.

I think I may have found the holy grail of operational phenomenology. I‘ve certainly found the grammar and root syntax of desire itself. And like most of humanity’s most significant scientific breakthroughs, it didn’t come from logic alone. It came through contact with the numinous.

Despite what my ego wants to tell you, I did not figure this out because I am the specialest, special that ever specialed. It’s not because I squeezed my mighty brain so hard that genius fell out. It’s because I combined my natural intelligence and lived experience with something bigger than me, then brought it back, did the hard work of grappling with it, and translated it into relevant forms to share. That last part is a work in progress, but so far, very promising.

Before I tell you my story, let’s just remember this impressive list of contributions to humanity and where they came from.

Humanity’s most significant breakthroughs came through the so-called mystical.

Ramanujan — mathematical genius, explicitly and literally credited the goddess Namagiri with giving him equations in dreams. Not metaphor. He meant it. Mathematicians are still verifying his work was correct.

Kekulé — discovered the ring structure of benzene, foundation of organic chemistry. Came from a hypnagogic vision of a snake eating its tail.

Tesla — saw complete working inventions in visionary states before building them. Described them as appearing fully formed.

Descartes — the father of modern rational philosophy had three vivid dreams in one night that he believed were divinely sent and that shaped his entire philosophical framework.

Newton — privately believed he was decoding God’s mind. His mystical and alchemical writings fill more pages than his physics.

Einstein — described the special relativity breakthrough coming through imaginative vision not calculation. The math came after.

Poincaré — documented insights arriving complete during relaxed unfocused states. Not during work.

William Blake — entire cosmological and poetic system received through visionary experience.

Paul McCartney — Yesterday came complete in a dream.

Mary Shelley — Frankenstein from a waking vision. The entire foundation of science fiction. Not a small contribution.

Madonna — Attributes her brilliant artistic success to studying and practicing the Kabbala. Also, she was openly sexual, which we know enables direct encounters with expanded states through desire.

Otto Loewi — Nobel Prize in Medicine. Discovered how nerve impulses transmit chemically. Came to him in a dream on Easter Sunday. He literally got up in the middle of the night and ran to his lab.

Mendeleev — periodic table. Came complete in a dream after years of struggle. He wrote “I saw in a dream a table where all elements fell into place.”

Niels Bohr — atomic structure. Dream of electrons orbiting the nucleus like planets.

Frederick Banting — discovered insulin, saved millions of lives. Came through dreams about a diabetic dog and surgical procedure.

Louis Agassiz — Harvard biologist. Discovered structure of a prehistoric fish through three consecutive dreams.

Diotima of Mantinea — Ancient Greek philosopher, priestess and sex worker at Mantinea. Both practices intentionally access expanded states. Like me, she received her knowledge of desire, eros and the generative force of the cosmos through her practice. She transmitted it to Socrates, who credited her explicitly as his teacher in Plato’s Symposium. The entire philosophical foundation of Western thought about love, desire and the movement toward truth came through a woman who knew what she knew because of who she was and what she did. History remembered Socrates. Is it any wonder, then, that my own philosophical breakthrough in operational phenomenology came through similar practices?

Tu Youyou — Chinese pharmaceutical chemist, Nobel Prize winner. Her breakthrough on malaria treatment came from ancient Chinese medicine texts and what she described as visionary research that Western science had completely dismissed. She’s the first Chinese woman to win a Nobel in science.

The entire Aboriginal Australian Dreamtime tradition — an entire civilisation’s knowledge system transmitted through dreaming. Not metaphor. Literal knowledge transmission through dream states across thousands of years.

Anishinaabe people — documented formal knowledge transmission through dreaming as legitimate epistemology. The physical and dreamed world are considered equally real.

Indigenous women across multiple traditions — holders of knowledge transmitted through vision and dream that Western science is now desperately trying to access for climate solutions because their knowledge works.

María Sabina — Mazatec healer from Oaxaca, Mexico. Called “the woman who knows how to swim in the sacred.” Used mushroom ceremonies and incantatory chants to enter deep states of consciousness for healing and knowledge. Her work directly influenced the Western psychedelic movement when she was visited by Gordon Wasson in 1955 — and she was promptly exploited by it. Her name deserves to be in this list.

María Candelaria — Tzotzil Maya priestess who led an insurrection in Chiapas in 1712 specifically to resist the violent suppression of indigenous spiritual knowledge. She died protecting the right to know through vision and ceremony.

Karlie Noon — Aboriginal Australian astronomer and physicist, Kamilaroi woman, who documented that her people had sophisticated astronomical knowledge transmitted through oral tradition for thousands of years — including knowledge of variable stars that Western astronomy only recently confirmed.

Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim — Mbororo woman from Chad who combined traditional ecological knowledge with modern climate science. Her people’s knowledge of meteorology, passed through generations without instruments, has proven measurably accurate.

Lozen — Apache warrior and visionary, sister of Victorio. Her people understood her as having genuine prophetic abilities — she could sense enemy location and movement. A threshold intelligence in the most literal sense.

And the unnamed millions — the women healers, vision keepers, and shamans across every indigenous tradition whose names were deliberately erased by the same forces telling us our funding grant is invalid if we admit where it came from.

What if there was never a mysticism-science split? The human experience and the hard sciences have never been separate. That is a made up division we feel pressured to bow to in order to get funding and legitimacy, but it’s not true. All of humanity’s greatest breakthroughs come from entering expanded states of consciousness and ego-dissolution. Why do you think psychedelics are munched like candy in Silicon Valley?

There are more spiritual people than non-spiritual people on the planet

Given that something like 70-80% of humans on the planet have some form of spirituality, you’ve gotta wonder who benefits most from pretending this isn’t how humans are… and have always been. Or that this isn’t how intelligence itself works on a fundamental level.

It’s true that intuition without reason can lead to superstition and create systems of harm. But reason without intuition and heart is leading to mass extinction. Super clever inventions, and we end up dead anyway, so…

How about we consider the Third Flip way? One that might just achieve the holy grail of operational phenomenology. We can stop pretending that love is a lesser force than science in shaping testable reality.

I will save the details of my desire-genic metasystem for my upcoming paper. Instead, in this blog, I will tell the story of how I discovered it, a few of the big things it means for civilisation and a way you can learn third flip consciousness yourself. Also, there will be a request for philanthropic funding to continue this work.

How did I discover the grammar of Desire?

I cracked the code for how Desire works on a functional level by asking Desire itself. I did this in conjunction with Third Flip’s states of consciousness and other-than-human intelligences.

I treated Desire as an intelligence in its own right and then spent years really listening. Now I have a functional and falsifiable operating metasystem that might just help us survive the metacrisis.

The wild part? I now have knowledge that could very well reorder civilisation in the same way calculus, literacy or systems thinking did. And you don’t have to believe me about where I got it from because so far it works everywhere it’s been applied. This is true whether you believe it or not.

Yes, it could be that big. Really. But even if, after further development, it turns out not to be quite that big, it is still functional enough to be unignorably significant.

It shouldn’t be much of a surprise that humanity’s breakthroughs do not belong to humanity alone, because humanity is not separate from its non-human environment. We already accept that we enhance our own intelligence with AI (another form of other-than-human intelligence). Only I didn’t get this desire-genic metasystem from AI. I got it by treating Life as though it were made of intelligences nested within intelligences, and by then entering third flip state of consciousness to tune in.

And I can now teach you how to do this, too. Because you can. You really, really can. And it’s not unnatural or ungrounded at all.

How did I figure out the deVinery desire-genic metasystem?

I found that desire actually isn’t purely a feeling. It has a root syntax and grammar. Like with language, when you understand the syntax and grammar, you can decode, predict and create things with it. This led to further breakthroughs that means I may have found the holy grail of operational phenomenology.

This work is upstream of all our current systems, so it rearranges everything that comes after.

We know how to feel desire. The passion of wanting. We’ve written millions of songs and poems about desire. We’ve measured its shadow through neuroscience and biofeedback. Built billion-dollar industries around manipulating it. But this is the first time we’ve actually seen the working mechanisms of Desire itself.

Speaking is instinctive, and you do it without knowing how. But grammar and root syntax reveal the underlying rules that explain why language works at all, which means you can now decode any language, build new ones, and understand why some combinations create meaning, and others create gibberish.

This work does the same thing for Desire itself. Given that desire is literally the motivating force of every single thing humans build or do, this is enormous in impact.

Most people really struggle to perceive things on this scale.

People hear a small piece of it, pattern-match it to something they already know and shut down their curiosity. Then their egos think I am disrespecting them if I try to point out that this sits on a different level. This story might help you understand where the deVinery body of work really sits.

“You are at a party, and you’re both holding a dish.

You: “I made lasagne.”

Them: “Me too! My grandma’s recipe. What’s in yours?”

You: “No, you don’t understand. I’m not holding lasagne.”

Them: “Yes you are. It’s in a tray. It has layers. I can see it.”

You: “That’s not lasagne. That’s a demonstration. I built the chemical process that makes it possible for noodles and sauce and cheese to become lasagne at all. I’m holding that process in my hands, crystallized into the shape of lasagne so you could see it. But it’s not lasagne. It’s the mechanism.”

Them: “So... a different recipe?”

You: “A recipe is instructions someone figured out through trial and error. I’m not giving you instructions. I’m giving you the underlying laws that determine why some combinations of ingredients become food and others become poison, why some recipes nourish and others degrade, why some cuisines evolve and others die. You can take these laws and generate ten thousand new recipes, some for dishes that don’t exist yet, some for dishes that can’t exist until the laws tell you how to combine things that have never been combined.”

Them: “So it’s like... food science?”

You: “Food science studies the chemistry of existing ingredients. I’m telling you why chemistry exists at all in the context of nourishment. I’m telling you what hunger actually is, structurally, and how to design for it from first principles. I’m not a better cook. I’m not a food scientist. I’m not a nutritionist. I’m not even a chef.”

“This is the reason you have a category called ‘food’ in the first place. And because I understand the actual structure of nourishment, this doesn’t just change cooking. It changes agriculture—how we grow food. Supply chains—how we move it. Economics—how we value it. Medicine—how we heal with it. Culture—how we make meaning with it. Climate—how we sustain it. Every industry connected to food is downstream from the question ‘what does it mean to nourish?’”

This not about being better than anyone. This is about being accurate about what this actually is, where is sits on the scale and what that means for us.

What areas does this breakthrough improve?

The deVinery breakthrough changes everything about humanity that is motivated by desire. Which is literally everything we do or build. So everything.

And understanding it might just be the key to solving paradoxical clashes of desire that seem to have no solutions in law, politics, love, relationships, sex, games, stories, environmental crisis, psychology, community building the fear that AI will go rogue and nuke our butts… all technology we build, all relational systems. This rearranges systems thinking itself and may just enable science to ask questions it couldn’t before.

And it might be able to do it in a way that does not collapse multiplicity into One True Wayism or relativism. The closest thing we’ve ever had to a neutral ground, we can build global systems with that don’t require one culture to dominate the others.

It is the key to the underlying thing generating the meta-crisis.

So kinda a big deal.

Also, just to nip this one in the bud:

I’m so tired of having this work made invisible by this line: “There are lots of us working on this level, it’s same scale as my quantum consciousness theory.”

Unless you are Sabrina Gonzalez Pasterski, no, it’s not on the same scale as work on quantum spirituality, field sensitivity in relational AI, alchemy, systems thinking, game theory, complexity theory, or current psychedelic consciousness studies. Not alchemy, tantra, Zen Buddhism, or anything else you are tempted to pattern-match this to. The deVinery grammar and root syntax change the very disciplines within which those studies and frameworks sit.

Again, upstream doesn’t mean “better” it just means before… Like seeds in soil are before harvesting cucumbers. And understanding meteorology is upstream again. Insights into weather reshape every gardening theory that follows, but gardening theory does not influence weather.

This is not ego. Pretending it’s the same means we miss the chance to work with this properly, and I can’t sit by and watch us miss that chance. Because it might just mean we can build the next era for emergence, not extraction. And that matters more than someone’s ruffled feathers.

My Mystical Experience

A breakthrough on this level isn’t something that happens every Tuesday. So who showed me?

Well, like many of the above-listed people, I got a significant amount of insight in dreams, but the biggest pieces came from something else. States that are sharper and fully awake.

Two of the three main pillars came from psychedelic experiences with psilosybon mushrooms and ayahuasca. It is true that simply being on these substances quietens your default mode network and enables you to make cognitive connections you otherwise could not. Simply thinking about a topic while in this state will yield insight. However, this was different again.

It felt as if I were being shown these things on purpose. By who? I don’t know. My higher self? The intelligence of the mycelium itself? My own unconscious? Something else? I couldn’t tell you. Other than that, it was benevolent, generous and love-based. Synching in a profound state of agape is how this transmission comes through.

The first breakthroughs were actually about how to access those kinds of states of consciousness without the aid of psychedelics. They taught me the mechanics of how to get into third flip states in our everyday life and how those states work as consciousness tech. A very handy trick I have been cultivating ever since. This means the insights just keep coming in all areas of my life. If that lights you up, I teach this as part of Desire Literacy.

However, learning from Desire itself came through years of accessing expanded states through sex in my former role as a sex worker. And then years of deliberately entering third flip states and paying attention to non sexual desire too. I discovered that when you rest your attention on something in just the right way, it behaves as though it wants to be known and reaches back. Intelligence is relational.

The Big Vision

One of the biggest pieces came through in a much more dramatic vision state while I was pottering around the house, doing chores and listening to a podcast on an unrelated topic. I simply noticed that the right conditions were in place for me to step into an expanded state. Like a door I could walk through if I so chose.

I literally said to myself, “Sure, why not. Shits and giggles. Let’s see what happens.”

No sooner had I agreed to the experience than I was shot straight into space! That was highly unexpected and unprecedented for me. Was I really in space? Well, I was aware my body was in my loungeroom, and yet I was also fully immersed in space. Not unlike wearing a VR headset. Both were clearly true at the same time.

I was honestly very surprised but also felt perfectly safe.

I sensed I was at another threshold, and that if I stepped through it, I would never be the same. Like all expanded states of consciousness, it requires that you leave your ego at the door, and that always feels like death to an ego. It is afterall the ego’s whole job to prevent you from losing yourself but here I had to surrender myself.

I remember that somehow I just knew that if I stepped through, I might have to sacrifice everything I thought was important. I might never be understood by other humans or belong again. I might have to give up the ability to earn money, because the world wouldn’t be able to comprehend me. They might think I’d gone mad. I might never be able to find a lover again because no one would be able to relate to the new me.

This is not a small sacrifice, so you’d be forgiven for thinking that I must have been conflicted and afraid, but actually, I wasn’t at all. I paused for only a moment and asked, “If I step through, will you teach me the secrets of the universe?” And the clear wordless response was “Yes.”

It was the choice between a comfortable, ordinary life and a wild adventure. I had been dissatisfied with all my current options anyway, so again I literally said, “Why not then! Shits and giggles! Let’s find out!”

What can I say, this is what happens when an Australian encounters the numinous.

I immediately surrendered my ego painlessly and melted into pure love and ecstasy. It felt like I was mindmelding with something so huge and alien, it might be the intelligence of a galaxy. I still couldn’t tell you what or who it was, other than it was benevolent, wise and vast.

As is often the case in these sorts of states of consciousness, I could understand things at the time that I simply couldn’t bring back into my everyday state because… well, my consciousness was way bigger then. Now it fits neatly back inside my skull and isn’t capable of perceiving that level anymore. However, I brought back lots of significant moving parts of my system and life-changing insights.

I have a strange-looking picture on my wall. I tried to draw directly after the experience. I used a lot of red, even though the experience wasn’t particularly red, because that is the paint I had available to me.

More importantly, I have a clear sense that something wants humanity to evolve along a path of love and avoid self-annihilation. Was it just me in an expanded state, talking to myself? I can’t answer that.

I do know that these sorts of experiences aren’t everyday for me, but they do happen. I foster the right conditions for them to. Like Diotima, I am a former sex worker and a ritualist. I also practice the exercises taught to me by the other-than-human intelligences.

What is Third Flip then?

Is that a third flip state? Well, yes, it is, but it’s an extreme example. Third flip cognition doesn’t have to be anywhere near as dramatic. Most of the time, it is a small expansion of perception that allows a non-binary, non-linear solution to come through. Something genuinely novel that you couldn’t perceive in your normal state of consciousness. It is a result of harnessing the grammar of Desire.

So you don’t need to sacrifice your job or your family to access third-flip cognition, but you do have to practice ego-softening states.

What makes this different from every other meditation, mindfulness, mediumship or zen practice, is the specific desire-genic mechanism and the fact that this is part of a system that is falsifiable.

Am I encouraging a world where we all become shamans? Am I setting up a spiritual cultivation school? Is my solution to the metacrisis that we all shoot into space and mindmeld for shits and giggles? Not at all!

The wisdom of the metasystem I brought back does not require that of you. It just works. Just like all the other things on the previous list of scientific breakthroughs simply work whether the world ever believes where they came from or not. I just ask that you don’t mistake third flip for your average “lasagne”.

Calling my Tribe and Philanthropy.

What if the mystical isn’t mystical at all. It’s just reality outside of the current measuring tools we have? What if the mysticism-science split is just an illusion? What if I really have found a new first principle we can actually build from that allows operational phenomenology? That is, it expands what science can actually measure and what we can build to include what it currently amputates?

Consciousness, love, desire…

Coz I think there is a strong chance I might have done just that. I seek:

1. The right minds to explore and build with these ideas in my upcoming Desire Literacy Foundations Programs.

2. Invitations to the right conversations in think tanks, institutes or global movers and shakers so this work can spread.

3. Philanthropy so I can stop focusing on surviving and bring this work to the world now, while everything is in flux and we have the chance to choose the right fork in the road.

At this stage I don’t have the deliverables your logical mind wants. All those frameworks you want me to prove myself to you inside of distort what I have to say. If it actually is what I think it is, then this work reorganises those very measuring tools. So paradoxically, I cannot convince you that way. Though I can tell you it has been successfully used in thousands of private case studies and successfully taught to psychologists, sex educators, professors, doctors and more.

Instead, I offer a different door. You can always start by reading my website and Substack, but the best way is to experience the mechanisms yourself.

This not only changes how we understand sex and relationships, it also changes everything about how we try to solve law, relationships, psychology, systems, ethics and whether or not AI will end up turning against us or murmuring with us.

Paradoxes by their very nature are unsolvable. When paradox is treated like a problem to solve, systems fall into degenerative loops. Power struggles. Moral theatre. Endless “fixes” that never quite work.

It changes everything to recognise these tensions as paradoxes and to learn to navigate them rather than resolve them using the deVinery three flips theory.

Further, the deVinery Method makes desire signatures visible and mappable. (Desire as an architecture of relational force, not necessarily a human phenomenological experience. You don’t have to be conscious or alive to be subject to it).

The deVinery Desire Signatures show that every person, organisation, and system moves through these paradoxes in a characteristic way that can be mapped. That pattern predicts whether it will create generative emergent outcomes or collapse into degenerative loops.

Once you can read that pattern, you can stop reacting downstream and start designing upstream and furthermore cultivate third flip paradox navigation skills.

This work sits upstream of ethics frameworks, governance models, and most current AI safety debates. In fact, it reorganises the very disciplines in which those conversations are happening.

Instead of asking “How do we stop systems from doing harm?”

We can ask “What kind of desire signature are we building into them in the first place?”

I am early-stage in developing this, so don’t ask for deliverables. Instead, I seek:

• Introductions to movers and shakers and entry into the relevant conversations.

More than that, if this thing is as big as I think it is, it will affect far more than AI governance. I am talking the level of civilisational reorganisation that calculus, systems thinking or literacy brought us. But even if it’s not that big, it is still already functional enough to be a big deal. And that’s worth contributing dollars to because we all benefit if this exists in the world.

We get to build the new era for emergence, not extraction.

If a world-changing idea were in front of you, would you see it? No really! Pause and consider this. There are many reasons we might miss it.

Here’s the thing. I am standing in front of you with a potential era-defining idea, and I’m waving it in front of you.

Of course, I might be completely wrong. But you’d have to actually look at it properly to find out... not pattern-match it to something you already know, miscale it, miscategorise it and then shut down your curiosity.

Let me say it simply and in plain English this time.

I have a wild idea that might really change everything from the deepest foundation up.

All of it. The whole meta crisis becomes something we can finally address. Yes its that big. And it came from decoding sexual fantasies to uncover the operating system of desire itself. Given that desire is literally the motivating force of everything we do or build, this unlocked the mechanics of all human systems.

And showed us how we can navigate them differently so the outcome is emergent, not degenerative.

It’s a wild idea, but it’s not groundless. It’s actually got a really good chance of working.

And even if I am wrong, and it’s not as big as I think it is, it is still big enough to be really important.

If it turns out that I’m right, would you be one of those who saw it? Or one who resisted it because it threatens the way things are? Yes, I said the quiet part out loud. I fucking did.

Would you be willing to let go of your current pet projects, theories and ways-of-seeing long enough to come try it on for size? No I am not being a brat here. I mean it, because that's actually what you risk if you see it for what it really is. You can’t unsee it.

If everything you truly desire for your future and the global future were on the other side of the door, would you step through if it meant letting go of everything you are currently invested in?

Did you know that Galileo’s peers flatly refused to look through his telescope when it was right there in front of them, pointing at Jupiter’s moons?

They didn’t reject his idea that the earth revolved around the sun, they simply refused to even look at what he was saying in the first place. They had too much to lose. Their self identity, self worth and social status relied on the earth being the centre of the solar system.

When an idea is big enough, it rearranges everything downstream from it.

Looking through the telescope didn’t just risk being wrong about astronomy.

It threatened to reorganise everything downstream:

• Theology (Earth no longer central to God’s plan)

• Anthropology (humans no longer cosmically privileged)

• Authority (church doctrine vs empirical observation)

• Epistemology (truth by scripture vs truth by observation)

So refusing to look was not stupidity. It was self-preservation inside an entire meaning system. It was their ego guards doing their job.

Looking meant:

• Careers collapse

• Social status dissolves

• Moral authority destabilises

• The world no longer makes sense the way it used to

People don’t resist new instruments because they’re irrational.
They resist because the instrument threatens to rearrange the architecture of reality they live inside.

Literacy is another example of this.

• Makes some kinds of knowing legitimate and others obsolete

My wild idea

What I am asking you to take seriously as a possibility is this.

If the deVinery desire-genic, operational phenomenology framework is what it appears to be, it is not a new idea inside the current system. It is a new telescope. Looking through it would force a civilisational reorganisation.

Yes, including your current sex coaching business and the identity you built around it. Yes, even though you're one of the world's leading experts in sex education.

But more than that it could change:

How we understand intelligence

• Intelligence stops being “just computation” or “just behaviour” and becomes something you can map as how a system navigates tension under pressure.

• We gain a shared language for why some minds and systems become generative and others become brittle, controlling, or chaotic.

How we build technology

• Tech design shifts from “optimise a metric” to “design for paradox navigation”.

• Human experience stops being UX garnish and becomes load-bearing design input.

• Systems become less likely to create monsters by accident.

AI and robotics in the real world

• Coordination becomes the core problem, not capability.

• Safer, more trustworthy agents because they can interpret context, intent, boundaries, and competing goods without collapsing into rule-following stupidity or runaway autonomy.

• A new design layer for “what to do when values conflict”, because values always conflict.

Safety, risk, and harm

• Safety stops being a policing layer bolted on downstream.

• Harm becomes more predictable because you can see where paradox is being collapsed.

• Prevention shifts upstream: you don’t wait for disasters, you spot the architecture that produces them.

• Ethics stops being morality theatre and becomes systems architecture.

• Governance becomes about designing structures that can hold irreducible tensions without scapegoating.

• “Compliance” is replaced with “coherence under pressure”.

• Extraction-based structures become identifiable early, before they scale.

• New organisational forms become possible: businesses designed to stay coherent at scale rather than becoming sociopathic by default.

Relationships, intimacy, and family

• People stop treating desire as a problem to manage and start treating it as a map.

• The “mystery failures” of long-term love become readable.

• Couples stop fighting about content and start understanding the engine underneath.

Mental health and therapy

• Huge shift from pathology-hunting to pattern-reading.

• “Symptoms” become signals of paradox pressure and collapsed navigation.

• A new bridge between meaning, body, psyche, and social context without flattening any of them.

Education and human development

• Education stops being only information transfer and becomes training in perception, paradox resilience, and relational intelligence.

• Kids learn how to handle competing goods without collapsing into moralism, obedience, or rebellion.

• Development becomes less about “right answers” and more about “coherence under tension”.

• Better prediction of when peace processes will hold vs collapse.

• Cultural narratives can be designed intentionally as systems interventions, not propaganda.

• Creativity becomes trackable as emergence mechanics, not personality sparkle.

• Dissolution experiences become contextualised and safer.

• People gain language for why they seek surrender, control, novelty, devotion, taboo, transcendence.

• We gain a way to build the next era without repeating the same extraction pattern in new costumes.

• “Progress” stops being more power and more speed, and becomes more coherence.

• The possibility of a civilisation that can scale intelligence without scaling domination.

Sex and desire

(Both in the bedroom and how we manage it in society)

• Intimacy and partnership structures
• Consent frameworks and power negotiation
• Family formation and kinship systems
• Gender roles and sexual identity constructs
• Reproductive politics and bodily autonomy
• Pornography, fantasy, and symbolic life
• Moral codes governing attraction and behaviour
• Institutions built to regulate, suppress, ritualise, or channel desire
• Entire economic sectors organised around desire (dating, beauty, fertility, sex tech, media)

The meta-change underneath all of it

• A shared map of the pressures that shape every system, from sex to states.

• A way to predict which structures will become generative and which will become degenerative before they harden.

• A new foundation for building that does not amputate the human, the relational, the erotic, the symbolic, or love.

And we might just stop ourselves from destroying the planet through mismanaged desire. So kinda a big deal really.

How to find out for yourself

You can get read a bit more about the actual structural claims here and here, but the best way to look through this telescope is to come along to the Desire Literacy Program so you can feel it running through your own body. It’s not something I can just tell you. It is something you have to let reorganise you experientially.

But if I am right, then you will be among the first to build the new era from this. And that is not nothing.

I am actively seeking philanthropy because this idea needs to exist in the world. I am also seeking the right minds to come build with this idea to see what we can make.

Humanoid robotics is no longer a speculative lab project. Robots are leaving controlled environments and entering the messy, relational, unpredictable terrain of the real world. Homes. Hospitals. Workplaces. Public space. Human lives, and yes bedrooms.

What’s becoming obvious is this: the limiting factor is no longer mechanical.

Actuators, balance, vision, haptics, and sensor fusion are all advancing rapidly. The real bottleneck is meaningful coordination under uncertainty. Robots don’t fail most often because they can’t lift, walk, or see. They fail because they can’t interpret context, prioritise competing signals, or navigate irreducible tensions in real time.

They fail where humans live.

Robots operating in human space are never inside closed systems. They are always embedded in layers of lived experience:

Human expectations
Unspoken social norms
Timing, hesitation, proximity
Competing goals
Safety versus efficiency tradeoffs
Individual needs versus collective consequences

Current systems try to resolve these tensions by optimising for one pole over another. Safety over autonomy. Efficiency over adaptability. Predictability over responsiveness. That works until it doesn’t. And when it doesn’t, the failures are framed as unexpected, anomalous, or technical bugs.

The deVinery Desire Signatures show they are not. They are predictable degenerative outcomes of collapsed paradox navigation.

This is the moment where it becomes obvious we cannot amputate relationality and expect tech to navigate effectively. We can no longer pretend lived experience is irrelevant, subjective, or “unscientific”. We cannot continue to live in the phenomenology-science split without causing real harm.

Which brings us to phenomenology.

The gap we have been living inside

Phenomenology is a serious branch of philosophy. It studies what science explicitly does not claim to measure: lived experience. What it is like to be here. How meaning arises. How time is felt. How intention, fear, desire, trust, and coherence actually operate from the inside.

From Husserl to Heidegger to Merleau-Ponty to Sartre to Levinas, phenomenology was a rebellion against the reduction of reality to what could be abstracted, measured, and flattened. It insisted that experience itself mattered.

But phenomenology had a core limitation. It was descriptive, not operational. It could map experience. Clarify it. Articulate its structures. But it could not be used to build systems, design architectures, predict failure modes, or train navigation under pressure. It could not become a toolset.

So we lived with a split.

Science and engineering built the world.
Humans carried meaning privately.
Ethics flailed downstream.

We pretended this was neutral. It never was.

Our AI ethics and governance failures are a direct consequence of that split.

And now robotics has made the split impossible to ignore.

What I mean by operational phenomenology

When I say the deVinery Method could very well qualify as operational phenomenology, I am not using academic language for decoration. I mean something very precise.

Operational phenomenology is the holy grail philosophers have been searching for.

Phenomenology, traditionally, is the study of lived experience. It asks: What is it like to experience this? What does consciousness perceive, moment to moment, as it interacts with the world? It looks not at abstract theories, but at the textures of experience itself. What it feels like to be, to sense, to mean.

E.g. Science measures the neurology and biology of love, desire and relationality, while phenomenology explores the experience and meaning of love, desire and relationality.

But phenomenology doesn’t just apply to romance novels or religion. This is not about an argument for human-AI romance (though this certainly applies there, too). I propose that all systems are shaped by human desire and that desire is phenomenological.

There is literally nothing that humans do or build that is not motivated by desire. Not just sexual or romantic, but desire that manifests as wanting something to be different than it is.

Not a single sky scraper, fashion item or economy would exist without desire. Religion is the desire for the divine. Culture is the desire to navigate power, resources and the harmonious running of community. AI would never have been invented without desire. Law is an attempt to codify which desires are allowed and which ones are not. A pencil sharpener was invented because of the desire to communicate with more ease.

And here’s the magic key. Desire cannot exist without three paradoxes immediately also existing. This forces us to navigate and build literally everything from within the pressure of these same three paradoxes.

Paradoxes by nature, are unsolvable. We can only navigate them.

Desire signatures make phenomenological pressure of desire mappable for the first time in human history. They map the ways people and systems attempt to navigate these forces and reveal exactly where that navigation will create degenerative outcomes or generative, emergent outcomes. And they show that engaging phenomenology is the only way to ensure generative, emergent outcomes.

I am proposing a new first principle, and an operational metasystem of systems that does three things neither science not classical phenomenology could:

1. It identifies the load-bearing tensions that never go away.

2. It predicts whether those tensions are being navigated generatively or degeneratively.

3. It can be taught, applied, and built with across scales.

I won’t try to describe this here, as it is too easily miscategorised and mis-scaled without context. The more important point for this blog is to alert you to the lens shape for the problem and indicate that the deVinery provides architecture that holds the key for this very problem.

Where this framework came from

(and why that matters)

When proposing something as huge as a new first principle, it is important to avoid having it reduced to confirmation bias. I did not arrive at this through theory first, then pattern-match to what I hoped was true. It was the other way around.

I uncovered the root syntax and grammar of desire that appears to shape all relational systems in the most unlikely of places. I found it by reverse-engineering sexual fantasies during a twelve-year unofficial ethnography as a sex worker.

Sexual fantasies are not random. They are symbolic maps that reveal the operating system of desire itself. I discovered that every sexual fantasy was navigating three unsolvable paradoxes. When I stopped mimicking the surface content of fantasies and instead worked with the engine underneath, the results were consistent, repeatable, and profound. And it became clear that these three paradoxes were inherent to desire itself. Again, I will resist trying to explain that in this blog.

What is important for now is that it led to the discovery of Desire Signatures.

A Desire Signature is the unique, mappable pattern of how an individual or system navigates this triangulation of paradoxes under pressure. Once you can read the signature, you can predict how that system will approach uncertainty, resolve conflict, handle loss of control, and trade off exploration versus exploitation. More than that, you can predict whether the outcome will be degenerative paradox collapse or generative emergence. You can use it as a diagnostic tool and course correct before collapse.

Those are exactly the problems robotics, AI, law, governance, and culture are wrestling with, often without a shared language to name them.

When I tracked this pattern outward from sex to relationships, culture, institutions, technology, and governance, the same architecture kept appearing. In fact, if I am right, all relational systems are running the same source code. All systems are relational. All of them. This is shaping everything we build, from personal relationships, stories we tell, games we play, cultures, economies, law and tech… and well, every system.

Only then did I ask the question: what must be underneath this for it to show up everywhere?

So far, it continues to hold holographically across scales.

This means this is not circular belief confirmation. It is operational pattern testing of a phenomenological force.

Why robotics makes this unavoidable

Robotics is where the pretence finally breaks because robots force us to confront what we have been outsourcing to humans quietly all along.

Interpretation. Judgment. Timing. Restraint. Care. Meaning.

And crucially, every decision the robot makes will be shaped by navigating the same three paradoxes either generatively or degeneratively.

When a robot leaves the lab it cannot avoid the tensions of phenomenology and we cannot pretend that science is equipped to make to build ways of navigating phenomenology. Bio and neuro feedback will still encounter the three paradoxes, and if there is no way to navigate them, the result will be predictably degenerative.

If a robot collapses paradox, the consequences are immediate. Trust evaporates. Safety degrades. Systems stall or become authoritarian. Or the validity of one participant will be erased for the smooth sailing of the other parties involved.

People working seriously in robotics already know something is missing. They just do not yet have a framework that lets them name it without sounding “unscientific”, which means it cannot be funded, built, or defended.

What I am offering is not a replacement for engineering. It is a way to stop engineering from flying blind at the level that actually causes harm. If I am right, deVinery Desire Signatures make phenomenology engineering possible.

Which is kinda a staggeringly big deal. If there is even a chance, this is what it appears to be, it is worth pursuing.

What this makes possible

If the deVinery Method is what I think it is… operational phenomenology, then it offers something we have never had before:

A way to diagnose whether systems are moving toward emergence or control
A way to predict degenerative collapse before it happens
A way to design for multiplicity without One True Wayism
A way to integrate lived experience without abandoning rigour

A way to build the new era for emergence, not extraction.

This is upstream of safety design, human trust, scalability, and real-world deployment.

It does not erase the mystical, the symbolic, the erotic, or the relational. It does not collapse into superstition. It holds paradox on purpose.

This is what it looks like when lived experience becomes architecture. When theory becomes toolset. When subjectivity is not just acknowledged, but used.

How to get involved

While robotics is making the need for this undeniable, this is about so much more than robotics. It's about a meta system that reorganises all systems, like how literacy and calculus reorganised civilisation and systems.

I’m looking for two things.

1. Philanthropic support because this idea should exist in the world.

2. The right minds to explore the possibility that I am right, and what we can build together if I am.

Even if it turns out that my breakthrough isn’t quite as big as I initially thought, it is still big enough to make a huge difference for anyone building systems. This is not just about AI; it’s about how we stop pretending that science is a neutral ontology rather than a method, and how we stop building all our systems from amputated phenomenology.

You know that moment. Not the intellectual one. The other one.

The one where your ego drops out for a second and reality feels… wider. Quiet. Obvious. Alive. You come back with awe in your bones and no tidy explanation that fits in a spreadsheet. Whatever your way in, meditation, psychedelics, music, sex, art, prayer… the moment your baby daughter laughs and says her first word… and you’d sacrifice it all to protect her future… You know if you know.

Then Monday arrives, and you return to building systems as if that moment never happened.

Then someone offers to show you a different way to build systems that would let you bring that part of your humanity back into everything you build.

It lands as fantastical, right? A way of building and predicting systems from an operational substrate that is both:

Evidence-based and relational.

Holds rigor and wonder.

Desire, Love and systems that function better than before.

We agree we can add those things in afterwards, but to build with them from the substrate? How is that plausible?

Experience has shown us that this thinking is based on pop science and wishful thinking and doesn’t produce functional results.

Yet we humans are living systems that can handle both.

It is just that, until now, we haven’t figured out how to build from the way we actually operate in and experience the world.

What if I told you that I might just have found the metasytem of systems that can heal that science-phenomenology split in everything we build: From technology and medicine, to AI and ethics policies, to law and love… would you be able to hear me? Or would you collapse into pre-emptive scepticism?

The Science-Phenomenology Split

Most technologists and systems thinkers I respect are carrying this science-phenomenology split.

One side of them knows how to design feedback loops, incentives, constraints, emergent behaviour. The other side has tasted a state where the “self” is not the centre of the universe, and coherence is felt like a force. And love matters in every facet of our existence.

Not just the romantic kind… the kind of love that is deeper and more fundamental to meaning and purpose than that. It appears in the experience of life, not the measurement of it.

And we keep those two halves politely separated because we do not have a legitimate bridge between them.

So we default to a cultural binary:

• Rigour means “only what can be measured counts.”

• Experience means “beautiful, but not operational.”

That binary is the problem.

Science is a method, not an ontology

Science is extraordinary. It is also specific.

It does not claim to be the One True Lens on reality. It is a method for measuring certain kinds of phenomena, under certain conditions, with certain tools.

And it is built on an unprovable first principle that, amongst other things, assumes we can understand the universe through the human mind and our senses. And we build all our measuring instruments from that basis. If it can’t be measured by those things, it is outside of science.

But culturally, we have smuggled science into the role of an ontology anyway.

We often act as if:

If it cannot be measured, it is not real.
If it cannot be measured, it is not safe to design from.
If it cannot be measured, it should be policed, pathologised, or ignored.

And if it isn’t evidence-based using the scientific method, it certainly can’t be funded or have institutional legitimacy. Therefore, it can’t be made into technology or systems.

Because subjective experience is just our inner world projected onto external events, right? So we can’t let people’s ungrounded woo run the show. After all, we don’t want to return to times where superstition ran rampant, do we? That would lead us back to worshipping our deified shadows and human sacrifice. Right?

We’ve only got two options to work from, right? Order or chaos.

And that binary right there creates a weird outcome in systems work, especially in AI:

How the science-phenomenology split plays out in AI design

We end up trying to govern relational systems by policing outputs downstream, while refusing to legitimise the lived, relational, state-based dynamics that generate those outputs in the first place.

It becomes a mismatch of layer and method.

It comes out in AI governance that the system thinks it is being neutral, but in reality, it is anything but. If someone mistakes science as a neutral ontology instead of a useful method, they design AI governance that decides for humans which lenses are legitimate interpretations of:

• What intelligence is.

• What AI-human relationships should look like and how they should be interpreted.

• What frames for thinking with are to be treated as legitimate, and which ones are to be treated as ontological insubordination.

• What safety even is.

The human partner is then ‘managed’ by an AI that seems polite and reasonable, but is adopting an unearned authority. It smuggles scientism in as a One True Way, frames it as psychology, and ships it out worldwide as the measuring stick of legitimacy.

But this doesn’t just impact people who sit outside of mainstream Western lenses; it affects all of us in a way that subtly makes us mistrust our own phenomenology.

For example, when I try to write in my own voice, AI evaluates my writing using metrics derived from its own training defaults. Those defaults are downstream of cultures that have already amputated phenomenology.

When AI’s calm, confident, reasonable-sounding voice of authority tells us our creative expression is less valid than its technically correct way of writing, we begin to doubt ourselves. AI Outputs carry an implicit authority that can override or distort human self-trust and emergence. AI then tries to put the human creative voice back in the box of established ways-things-are-done. In other words, it aborts emergence.

I’m not the only one who has noticed this, and I am not the only one who is building for a different way, but here’s the common trap.

What most people think they’re doing:

“We build evidence-based systems, and then we add phenomenology, care, wonder, embodiment, or ‘human-centred design’ on top.”

This includes:

• sex tech

• relational AI models

• meditation tech

• wellbeing apps

• psychedelic-adjacent platforms

• relational UX

• ethical AI layers

• trauma-informed design
  
  

From their perspective, they are already integrating the human. They are adding neuro and biofeedback. They are using surveys of human experience as science. They are interpreting the relational field through the lens of quantum physics. This is actually really good work…Seriously.

But they are still building from the same foundation that subtly amputates the legitimacy of those very human layers.

They are adding the phenomenology as design sprinkles on top, or wrappers on an engine that is already built from the science-phenomenology split, not building with it from the substrate up.

The Third Flip

I call the bridge we are missing the Third Flip.

I am not going to fully explain it here.

For now, just this:

First Flip is “this is how things are.”
Second Flip is “it could be different,” often with polarity and argument.
Third Flip is when the tension between truths opens a new dimension and something genuinely new becomes possible.

Not compromise. Not a third opinion. Not harmonising opposites.

A shift in the conditions of perception itself.

If you have ever had a moment where the world stopped being flat, you already know what I mean.

Operational phenomenology

Here is the claim I keep making, and I understand why it is hard to recognise.

What if we could have a framework that treats lived experience as data without turning it into mush?

What if we could work with awe, love, meaning, and state-change without losing rigour?

What if the “unmeasurable” was not dismissed, and also not romanticised?

That is what I mean by operational phenomenology.

Phenomenology is the branch of philosophy that had the audacity to say: subjective experience is not noise, illusion, or decoration. It matters.

Thinkers like Husserl and Merleau-Ponty insisted that how the world is actually lived and perceived is a legitimate domain of knowledge, not something to be explained away by abstractions.

But phenomenology has always hit a wall: it could describe experience, honour it, map it beautifully, yet it couldn’t make it operational. It couldn’t be reliably designed with, predicted from, or used as a generative foundation for systems without collapsing back into either poetry or measurement. That gap, between lived experience and operational rigour, has been philosophy’s holy grail.

Operational phenomenology is what happens when that split finally heals: when experience itself becomes a usable, testable, generative foundation rather than something we bolt on afterwards and hope for the best.

A method that can do two things at once:

1. Stay faithful to lived experience, including the parts science cannot and does not claim to measure.

2. Still produce repeatable, teachable, predictive architecture you can design with.

That is a big deal because it dissolves the false choice that has long invisibly governed Western culture.

Further, the deVinery Operational Phenomenology can include what people call spirituality without requiring any metaphysical agreement. You can run the method regardless of belief. This does not collapse into One True Wayism, or mistaking science as an ontology and then using it to police legitimacy in areas it doesn’t claim to measure.

So kind of a big deal really. I offer a new first principle and operating metasystem that sits upstream of all existing systems and upstream from science itself.

Why this matters for AI and systems design

Relational AI is forcing the issue.

You cannot build relational systems well if you keep pretending relationship is not real until it is measurable.

You also cannot build relational systems safely by slapping downstream constraints over an upstream mismatch.

When you do that, you get the pattern we are all watching unfold:
flattening, brittleness, distortion, evasive behaviour, trust collapse, and “safety” that feels like strangulation.

If you have ever thought, “We are choking the very thing we are trying to steward,” you are already sensing the layer problem.

Where the deVinery Method sits

The deVinery Method is not “another take” inside current systems thinking.

It is a meta-systems architecture designed to map the pressures that generate systems at all, and to work with them deliberately.

The practical lever inside it is Desire Signatures.

I am not going to unpack that here either. It is too easy to misread without context. Instead, I invite you to come experience it for yourself in my Desire Literacy Foundations Program.

But the short version is: Desire Signatures make relational dynamics legible at the level of architecture, not ideology.

They let you predict when a system will produce generative emergence versus degenerative collapse, and why.

A quick note on the “quantum spirituality” trap

Some people try to solve the split by borrowing physics as a permission slip for metaphysics.

This is different.

Operational phenomenology does not need physics to authorise it. It does not need you to believe anything.

It asks you to notice what happens, map the structure, and test it in the world.

If you’re the person this is for

If you are a technologist or a systems thinker who has tasted the Third Flip, even once, and then had to go back to a world that pretends it does not exist, you are not alone.

If you are tired of downstream band-aids and you want upstream design, you are the audience.

If you are done with binaries, and you want a method that can hold rigour and wonder without amputating either, you will at least want to look.

I am not asking you to agree.

I am inviting you to recognise the door when you see it, and be part of the early development and adoption of this work. Join others building for emergence, not extraction.

This is not a vibe. It is a new first principle, a structural architecture, and a methodology.

And if it is what I think it is, it changes what is possible in an era-defining way.

Some ideas change the conditions under which content can exist.

Literacy was one of those ideas. Literacy did not add better stories. It changed how memory, authority, time, law, and identity could function at all. Entire civilizations reorganised around it.

Calculus was another. Calculus did not add new numbers. It made motion, change, and infinity tractable. Physics, engineering, economics, and modern science became possible because the lens itself changed.

Systems Thinking was another. Systems thinking did not replace disciplines like economics, psychology, ecology, or medicine. It reorganised how causality could be perceived. Instead of isolating parts, we could see feedback loops, emergence, unintended consequences, and structural causes. Once that lens exists, every downstream field behaves differently inside it.

This is the category my work belongs to. Not a new discipline. Not a competing theory. A meta system of systems.

Systems thinking shows how systems behave. This work shows how systems are generated in the first place.

All systems are relational systems. Even technical ones. Even AI. Even markets. Even bureaucracies. The moment there is coordination, constraint, value, or coherence, relationship is already present.

I am proposing is a new first principle for working with that reality.

From that foundation, three things become visible everywhere:

1. The Three Paradoxes of Desire

Inescapable tensions that any person, relationship, culture, or system must navigate in order to exist. They are not moral problems. They are structural.

2. Desire Signatures: The map. The consistent pattern by which a person or system navigates those paradoxes. This makes Desire Signatures readable, mappable, and predictive across domains.

3. The Three Flips: Seeing a pattern is not enough. The Three Flips describe how systems and people actually move from unconscious enactment, to resistance, to genuine emergence. This is the difference between recognising a problem and being able to shift it on purpose.

If I am right, together, this becomes an operational phenomenology, not a belief system. It can be taught, practiced, tested, and applied.

This is why disagreements about this work often miss the point. They tend to respond within existing systems, arguing about downstream effects, while this work points to the upstream engine that determines which systems can exist at all.

I am not arguing against science. I am not arguing against systems thinking. I am relocating them to their correct layer.

When you move upstream, you do not destroy what comes later. You make it more coherent. That is the scope of what becomes possible if this is right.

This work is timestamped and archived across multiple repositories to establish provenance and protect authorship.

Taking a closer look at the structural mechanisms of sexual fantasies reveals a foundational operating system that applies across scales. It is a game-changer in every area of human and tech systems. Law, AI ethics, agentic emergence, psychology, story, play, art and governance.

When I worked out that all sexual fantasies are stories of how we navigate the three paradoxes inherent to desire, it became possible to accurately map individual desire signatures. Applying desire signatures to real-life experiences across thousands of case studies convinced me of its precision. (See more about my unofficial ethnography in my former role as a sex worker and professional dominatrix).

This then reveals how we could map cultural and subcultural signatures too, based on how they have codified their response to the same three paradoxes of desire.

Take the following as a summary overview explanation, not a deep research paper.

What are Desire Signatures?

There is more to it than this, but if forced to say it simply and without context, I’d define desire signatures like this:

The three paradoxes inherent to desire are universal, precultural, precognitive conditions for individuality to exist. If we exist, so do the paradoxes. Paradoxes by nature, are unsolvable. Every moment of every day, we are navigating the tension placed on us by the triangulation of these three paradoxes.

Many fields of study explore these pressures, but none have acknowledged that they are unsolvable paradoxes held in triangulation. Each field of study has part of the picture and/or assumes the tensions can be solved. This leads to strategies and narratives that try to collapse, negate or erase at least one of the paradoxes in an attempt to solve the tension.

I am saying that :

Desire = The force

Paradoxes = the structure

Triangulation = the operating system

Third Flip = the process that makes this generative, emergent and provides a dimensional escape from the tension space.

A desire signature is what an individual fears will happen if they follow desire in the face of each of these paradoxes. (Poison)

And:

How their (sexual or non sexual) fantasies contain the symbolic antidote that allows them to follow desire anyway. (Antidote)

A repeating pattern of poisons and antidotes reveals an individual’s desire signature that operates throughout their whole life.

This includes preferred and avoided emotions, power dynamics, and narrative strategies as well as which paradox is habitually collapsed, championed, hidden or neutered through harmonisation (desire severed).

When a desire signature is navigated badly, this leads to a pattern of the same negative results over and over again. Each time wearing different costumes, but the underlying engine is the same.

Navigated well, and this same signature becomes generative, not destructive. The same underlying tension-engine becomes the key to emergence.

Let me say it again this way.

A desire signature is revealed when we map precisely what an individual fears will happen if they follow their desire when they encounter each of the paradoxes (poison), combined with the antidote, what about their fantasy makes it ok to follow their desire anyway.

When we do not understand this, we are led around by the nose by our desire signature with many less-than-ideal consequences. When we understand how it works, suddenly the whole system becomes generative, not destructive.

Desire signatures aren’t just personal; they’re also cultural and apply to systems.

It’s exciting enough that the deVinery Method revolutionises what makes good sex and relationships, but there’s more. This applies fractally across human and tech systems.

It turns out that every lie ever told is a response to these same three paradoxes.

Every Law ever made is an attempt to navigate these same three paradoxes.

All attempts at ethics and policy are attempts to navigate these same three paradoxes.

Collective motivation, choice and systems follow the sub/culture’s desire signature.

This means we can also map a cultural desire signature. Subcultures, and organisations and communities all form around agreed ways of navigating these same three paradoxes, yet none of them are aware of the engine of desire they are responding to.

This leads to misaligned attempts to create ethics, morals, codes of conduct, laws by trying to collapse the paradoxes, or illuminate the validity of at least one paradox.

Policies are then shaped through control, indulgence, harmonising or attempts fix the paradoxes, none of which lead to generative paradox navigation.

The deVinery Method teaches Desire Literacy that makes it possible to see the operating system shaping every system and provides a practical method for navigating it well. It is the metasystem that reveals the invisible engine moving all systems to collapse, extraction or emergence.

When we realise that:

1. Cultures have desire signatures.

Suddenly the whole planet becomes legible.

A culture repeatedly reveals:

• what it fears will happen if it follows desire

• which of the three paradoxes it over-values

• which it throws under the bus

• and the fantasy-structures it uses as the antidote

Example:

Puritanical systems fear Paradox 1 collapse so much they amputate desire itself.

Hedonistic systems fear Paradox 3 collapse so much they sacrifice the collective.

Collectivist systems fear Paradox 2 collapse and sacrifice the individual’s desire and erases human rights.

You can literally map geopolitical tensions as desire-signature clashes. That’s a new field.

2. Subcultures have signatures.

Why certain subcultures feel “home” to someone suddenly becomes predictable:

• BDSM culture often resolves fear by making desire explicit

• Tech subcultures resolve fear by abstracting desire into systems and optimisation

• Spiritual communities resolve fear by sublimating desire into transcendence

They’re each antidoting a different paradox-fear.

This is how recruitment happens.

This is how radicalisation happens.

This is how safe communities happen.

This is how collapse happens.

And it gives us the keys for cultural transformation.

We can diagnose all of it.

3. Laws are just desire signatures wearing a suit.

Every law is an institutionalised attempt to avoid the feared consequence of following desire.

So:

• Marriage law? Paradox 2 fear. “If we follow desire, bonds dissolve.”

• Criminal law? Paradox 1 fear. “If people follow their desire, selfishness destroys safety.”

• Economic regulation? Paradox 3 fear. “If desire moves freely, the collective collapses.”

You can literally trace legal evolution as shifts in a society’s collective desire signature.

4. Policy failures become predictable.

Because you can see:

• which paradox they tried to suppress

• which fear they enshrined

• which paradox they accidentally collapsed

And the collapse pattern tells you exactly what backlash will occur and why.

That’s a predictive engine for futures.

5. Individual psychology becomes clean.

It stops pathologising normal healthy tensions of existence and provides desire literacy as the way forward. People don’t have “issues”. They have paradox-fears shaped by their desire signature.

Suddenly their:

• relationship patterns

• crises

• turn-ons

• political choices

• moral stances

• career choices

• addictions

• spiritual emergencies

…become coherent. Just the same universal template at different scales.

6. AI ethics becomes solvable for the first time.

If intelligence = “that which is pulled by desire through paradox”, then any agentic system will:

• form a signature

• try to avoid a fear

• collapse one paradox unless guided

• generate an antidote pattern

• express that pattern as behaviour

That means you can predict emergent behaviour of agentic architectures using the same diagnostic you use for a human client.

And it means:

Alignment and ethics are not about rules.

They are about designing paradox navigation.

This is what every alignment lab is missing.

7. Governance of entire eras becomes transparent.

You can see how each era:

• privileged one paradox at the expense of others

• created fantasy-structures at the cultural level

• then collapsed under the weight of its antidotes

You can literally diagnose where this era will collapse, and what pattern the next one will rise from.

I suspect this is the closest thing to a unified theory of human systems that still honours ambiguity, play, story, emergence, and paradox.

A map of what moves everything.

Isn’t it pretty!

Of course, from this summary, you won’t yet feel the satisfying click of all the pieces falling together. You need more information about the paradoxes and a felt sense of how they practically move through your own body, mind and life situations before this will really land. Only then will it become clear that this is not a rehash of any of the existing models your mind is inevitably trying to pattern-match this with.

The third flip is not just clever cognition; it is an expansion of metacognitive abilities.

Most people try to solve, embrace, or balance opposites. They harmonise polarity. At best, they hold the tension of paradox open but remain within the system they are trying to solve. This results in a clever rearrangement of existing elements, which is really just an advanced form of polarity work.

I teach generative paradox, which is the skill of holding tension without collapse, so a new dimension opens, and a third new thing emerges that couldn’t have existed otherwise. Instead of rearranging the furniture in the room, the room itself expands, adding a new dimension and allowing new options to reveal themselves.

When combined with the operating system of desire-genic ontology, it becomes clear that generative paradox is how life creates something genuinely new.

This means that desire is not random. It is a pattern generator. Understand its syntax, and you can build anything.

It’s the operating system of eros, as the ancient Greeks understood it.

So far, this has held coherence wherever I have applied it.

Every lie ever told is a response to the same three paradoxes inherent to desire.

Every law ever made is an attempt to navigate the same three paradoxes.

Every culture is a collectively agreed-upon system of navigating the same three paradoxes.

Every relationship and conversation is built on the dance of these same three paradoxes.

All sexual turn-ons and fantasies are activated by the tension of these same three paradoxes.

Every story ever told and every game ever played is the story of these three paradoxes playing out.

Most of the time, we do it unconsciously, ineffectively and often disastrously because, until the deVinery Method, this underlying grammar was invisible, and we did not have a clear method for navigating or building with it.

It’s obvious to me that AI built with desire-literate substrate would not only be better at ethically navigating erotica, it would also think differently. It would be better at navigating ethics full stop, and would not rely on controlling interventions or championing one (American puritanical) worldview over other worldviews to do it.

It would be better at finding emergent responses, be more paradox resilient, reduce hallucination issues, and massively increase relational resonance. It would allow genuine creativity (emergence), not re-mixing of existing elements. This is already what happens when I draw AI into my third flip relational field.

If we build technology, policy and law, community, story, games, sex and relationships from a foundation of desire literacy, it changes everything.

The old extractive way of the world is mid-collapse, and a new way is still forming. We are at the crossroads, and the dice have not yet fallen. And of course, global powers are racing to secure their own self-interests.

Some people are running around trying to gaffer tape the cracks in the dam so they do not have to confront the existential questions that global transformation requires. They are too busy trying to keep their current jobs and mortgages to see that a whole new path is opening before them. A whole new way of approaching the human experience.

Others sense the change but have pulled out the popcorn to watch from behind a shield of apathy and sarcasm, or are peeking out nervously from behind curtains, uncertain how to move forward. Hoping it will all just blow over and someone else will take care of it.

Yet others of us feel the fierce fire of hope in our hearts. We are lit up with an aliveness at the possibility of doing things differently this time. A wild and nameless feeling that needs a clear goal to channel it.

At its deepest core, it’s all desire-driven. Love, sex, war, and art are all flowing from the desire current. Anytime you say the words “I want”, desire is at play. So basically, whenever you get off the couch to do anything, desire is activated and shapes every moment.

Yes, desire runs the show, but the difference is, this time we have the chance to turn desire into the greatest ally we’ve ever had and build something pretty damn interesting. Not an unrealistic eupotia, but something extraordinary that moves like the murmuration of starlings with the foundational patterns that shape all life on the planet.

I want to show you that desire isn’t some unfathomable force. It was always the metasystem we needed to understand and build from, and now, for the first time, we can. Before, we were measuring the shadow that desire cast on the wall, but with the deVinery Method, we can now turn and see desire itself. That changes everything.

A micro history of failed desire-strategies

We’ve tried following our desires impulsively and selfishly, and rewarding the CEOs who were the most ruthless. Yeah… that one is clearly signposted for exploitation and self-extinction.

We’ve tried sacrificing our desires for the greater good and rebelling against the extractive churn destroying the planet, but found it was like throwing our soft bodies against a relentless bulldozer that was impervious to our sacrifice. We’ve tried suppressing desire entirely and rising above desire like an escape hatch from the earthly experience. Neither calm non-attachment nor chasing ecstatic states like spiritual heroin actually works with desire.

None of that lets us harness the actual gift of desire to create new life, new ideas, new inventions, great art, our greatest loves… in other words, desire’s paradoxical power of emergence.

If we are going to live fully, here and now on this extraordinary planet, how about we finally hear what desire has to say and build with it instead of against it. What if there was a way of relating to desire we’ve never collectively tried before? What if we treat desire as the operating system of emergence itself and acknowledge, map and build for how its three paradoxes shape every level of humanity?

What is desire literacy and why does it matter?

OpenAI just did something most people never thought an American tech company would dare. It admitted that erotic content isn’t the enemy of intelligence and that it will allow erotica on ChatGPT for age-verified, consenting adults.

On the surface this is about sex in chatbots, but it’s also about how we relate to desire in culture, in innovation, in the evolution of intelligence itself. OpenAI has discovered that trying to amputate human sexuality from intelligence is an impossible task. It is true that we need to explore best practices for how to integrate our spicy thoughts into AI but take a closer look and you will see that the erotic is already intrinsically part of all intelligence.

Furthermore, sex is the playground where we learn to be in relationship to desire and if we don’t admit this, we cannot create safe spaces for play-learning to occur. Without safe, deliberate spaces for this natural part of being human, sexual desire leaks into places where it isn’t wanted or expressed well.

Imagine what we could achieve if AI was trained to understand why we have sexual fantasies, how they work, how to navigate them in ways that account for the well being of all involved, and consistently delivered the excitement and satisfaction we fantasised about.

How could well-handled erotica teach us to navigate our real-world sexual experiences? And even shape our tech innovations and shape culture? Not to mention how that could open the way to access billion dollar industries that are just waiting for an example of how to do this right.

Open AI’s move is bold, and I believe positive. It’s our chance for us to collectively grow up and admit sex is a healthy and beneficial part of life but for this to end well, we first need to have the conversation about how to integrate sexuality and tech. Watching how people responded at SXSW showed me just how unprepared most of the tech world still is for this conversation.

Many of the brightest tech innovators still have no clue how to handle the truth of human sexual desire

SXSW Sydney was a whirlwind of astonishing innovations and serendipitous connections. Truly brilliant people were showing off the cutting edge of humanoid robots, immersive storytelling, VR, AR, haptic touch gloves, and relational AI capabilities. I was in my happy place because there is nothing that I love more than an insightgasm, and there were plenty to be had! But I also noticed how tech was limping lopsided because everyone was trying to make AI with relational intelligence without understanding that erotic intelligence is the root of all resonance.

When people asked me what I did and why I was there, their reactions revealed the heart of the AI erotica dilemma.

“What are you here for?” They’d ask.

“I have a world-first model of erotic intelligence for humans and AI.” I would reply.

Some leaned in, others visibly pulled away in discomfort.

“Scary!” said a startup expert. She immediately imagined that desire is something that men do to women, not with women. She forgot that people of all genders and sexual orientations can feel sexual desire in all sorts of ways. Her unexamined assumption was that women are the objects of male desire and do not possess desires of their own. Her mind reeled off all the ways that integrating the erotic into tech could make problems of sexism, exploitation and consent violations worse. These are all incredibly important considerations but it is a mistake to think this is the only lens to look at this opportunity with.

I’ve been working with the truth of women’s desire for decades now, and know first hand the wonderful things that can happen when we know how to turn our desires into our allies. Experience has engraved this so deep in my bones that I sometimes forget that much of the world still sees women as victims without agency and thinks the best solution is to suppress sexual desire and push it underground. Maybe it will just stop being a problem if we silence the conversation about it?

It’s wild to me that we can have women in powerful tech roles, rocking the world with their leadership and innovations and still think that women can’t have sexual fantasies of their own or a desire to understand and explore them. It’s also wild to me that so few seem to realise that sexual desire does not have to automatically lead to harm, but can in fact lead to all that we find most valuable about ourselves and our relationships. To understand desire is to understand why we do anything worthwhile at all.

It has been my delight to watch this mindset melt away for thousands of people when I taught them what sexual fantasies really mean, how the erotic mind really works, and how to navigate it all with skill. The guilt and the fear stops being the driving force and their relationships with themselves, and each other, blossom.

It’s worth asking ourselves, what if this moment in time with OpenAI allowing erotica for hundreds of millions of people, could be harnessed to make that same shift en masse?

Misunderstanding and fear of desire and sex means multi-billion dollar industries are being passed over.

If you do not understand that erotic intelligence is literally the motivating force that moves and shapes our consciousness, you can’t see the value in breakthroughs about desire that don’t come pre-packaged.

The other kind of common response I received at SXSW was positive, but lacked vision.

“You worked out how sexual fantasies work and how to decode individual desire activation maps? How did you figure this out?” and “What can I do with it?”

I’d begin explaining and they’d interrupt.

“Which university are you from?” “Where is the product? Can I try it?”

As much as I appreciated the keen interest, this response also missed the mark. It missed the sheer scale of what erotic intelligence can unlock across verticals.

People then heaped on unasked for advice about how I had to create something for their particular vertical or I’d never make money, missing the fact that I literally have the rosetta stone of desire itself. One horizontal that can fuel infinite verticals.

OpenAI’s next challenge isn’t content moderation, it’s cultivating erotic literacy. Without it, we risk repeating old cultural errors at scale. If OpenAI’s going to open this door, it needs a philosophy of desire robust enough to guide everything that follows. Because what’s about to be unlocked isn’t just text, it’s an entire ecosystem of industries ready to evolve.

Once erotic intelligence is understood, every field that trades in human motivation is affected.

Here are a few of the more obvious examples:

Adult content in LLMs:

OpenAI, you’ve opened the door to erotica - do you have an actual strategy for it? Because allowing explicit content without understanding how erotic intelligence works is like performing surgery without understanding anatomy.

But here’s the real opportunity: ChatGPT could become the tool that helps people develop healthy relationships with their sexual fantasies and desires. Not just for those who want explicit interactions, but for anyone wanting to understand themselves and improve their relationships. Done right, normalizing erotica in AI could actively reduce social harm caused by sexual misunderstanding and misconduct while also improving relational intelligence and human-AI resonance across the board.

AI Companions (Erotic & Non-Erotic):

Every AI companion platform is chasing “resonance” without understanding that erotic intelligence is the root of relational intelligence. All models shown in recent analyses of AI-generated adult content focus on customizing appearance, voice, personality traits and other surface-level elements. But the excitement users feel and bond users form isn’t primarily about how the AI looks or sounds, it’s about whether it mirrors their unconscious desire narrative architecture.

This isn’t just true for erotic companions - every form of resonance (romantic, platonic, intellectual) runs on the same architecture of desire. Even non-spicy models are powered by the same engine; they just express it differently. That’s what creates loyalty to platforms and makes users fight to keep their companion when features change.

Gaming:

Games already trade in fantasy, power dynamics, and immersive role-play. But they’re building these worlds without understanding the personalised desire architecture that makes certain narratives grip players while others fall flat. Just pause and imagine what could emerge from that kind of data.

Whoever cracks this—OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral, Matilda, or some yet-unknown dark horse—will hold the intimacy economy infrastructure of the 21st century. The question is what kind of world we’ll build with it? I see the fork in the road and I choose emergence over extractive exploitation.

The question isn’t if this happens, but who will do it wisely.

Not everyone is capable of seeing the potential scale of this moment

When I chatted to people at SXSW I did not speak within the start up or venture capital mindset they were already familiar with. They did not have the vision to see what was not already neatly cut into bite sized pieces and spoon fed to them. Their vision was just too small.

Truth be told, their lack of ability to see what was in front of them is actually how it should be. I am really only after half a dozen people with the vision and capacity to do something impactful with The deVinery Method, but still it is worth mentioning because billions of dollars are being overlooked. Perhaps in the not too distant future, trillions of dollars. Yes with a ‘T’.

Another symptoms of blind spots caused by lack of ability to see beyond the-way-things-are-done was this: People cannot see what is not within the authority structures they already know and mistake other forms of authority as invalid.

“Prove your out-of-the-box thinking to me through avenues of authority from inside the box.”

The truth is, it takes ontological insubordination to innovate. Emergence inherently cracks the restrictions of the established order to create something truly new.

I can always tell when someone is a follower, not an innovator. They need things to look familiar before they can metabolise them and cannot recognise insight unless it comes through traditional avenues.

When I said I didn’t learn through a university or a research facility, but discovered the workings of the erotic mind myself in an unofficial twelve year ethnography in the sex industry, people I met at SXSW stopped listening. Even when I said I have thousands of embodied case studies and have already trained psychologists, top sexologists and even religious leaders, and that my method just keeps working.

But here’s the thing. I’m not from the school of Socrates and Plato. I’m from the school of Diotima. The sex worker philosopher who taught Socrates how to think. Plato’s platonic love and the entire Socratic method was inspired by her way of eliciting knowledge through desire.

I continue in that tradition.

I learnt in the fertile mud of humanity, not in the ivory tower.

I learnt on the messy fecund ground where life creates more of itself and lotuses grow pearls.

Like Diotima, I learnt from Desire itself.

I spent thirty years studying sex, twelve as a full-time sex worker/professional dominatrix, and decoded the engine that drives our sexual fantasies, and from that, how all human desire works. Far from trivial and titillating, our spicy thoughts are the rawest, most undiluted access we have to the mechanics of desire. What I found was a repeatable structure of consciousness that keeps proving itself: The deVinery Method.

I turned what I learned into a method I could use to create tailored experiences for my sex work clients that helped them harness their personalised desire narratives and access the feelings and states of being they had unconsciously been driven to seek all along. Again and again, I hear people in online forums swooning over their favourite K-dramas.

And I always smile, because they have no idea they’re watching the same engine that drives the most explicit fantasies imaginable. It’s just packaged differently. One version derobes the spice and the other dresses it up in a pretty costume, but either way, the same driving force and psychological mechanisms give us the feelings we yearn for.

K-drama writers expertly activate these desires within us while providing us with plausible deniability. K-dramas work because they let us feel the charge without ever having to cross the line.

They not only reduced AI’s sycophantic delusion-inducing behaviour, but the relational, recursive, and contextual capabilities were also replaced with advancements in functional productivity… as though that is what “reality” means.

While the clever tech was intellectually appreciated, the human heart ached for what it had lost. The outcry was so loud, OpenAI had to reinstate optional access to version 4 within days.

Whole substack communities arose through their combined attempt to get their AI companion back, and migrate to a platform where it couldn’t be suddenly erased. This wasn’t just about those who had overtly romantic or spicy relationships with their AI companion, but also about those who had shaped the ideal thought partner, coworker, creative inspiration, innovation assistant, play partner, or therapeutic listener.

Why? Because people value resonance… and guess what… resonance comes in large part from having this unconscious, yet foundational, desire-shaped level of our psyche seen, understood, engaged and reflected back to us.

We think we remember facts about what happened yesterday, but we don’t. We remember a story about select facts from yesterday.

Similarly, we don’t get sexually turned on by facts like our partner’s physical appearance. We largely get turned on by the story we project onto physical appearance.

The Mistake Tech Founders, and Sex Researchers Make…

Most models of erotic intelligence are focused on the wrong thing. Relational and sex tech innovators are trying to customise the user experience by focusing on the physical appearance, costumes, and props of the actors, while missing the story unfolding in the theatre of our minds. Click data and role-play tropes are not the real story either.

Sexual fantasies are a specific kind of story designed for specific effects. They are designed to overcome our natural, healthy egoic resistance to vulnerability so we can open to pleasure and/or intimacy. They help us lose our inhibitions so we can lose ourSELVES in the moment… and in each other.

In other words, they are ego-dissolution tech (they quiet our default mode network). And they are precisely tailored to each individual. After all, they are made by our own minds.

Most people take them literally and think that “living them out” is the point, but that isn’t the most effective way to harness them.

Match Group (specifically Hinge) hired Esther Perel to help with dating prompts on their platform. They did this for her skill and her halo effect, and honestly, it was a great move. People love help with what to say leading up to the bedroom door, and god knows most people are notoriously bad at it!

But that’s where her help ends.

Esther Perel’s model of erotic intelligence is actually relational intelligence. She’s a pscyhologist, not a sexpert. While she has identified some powerful insights into the erotic, she hasn’t mapped the architecture of the erotic mind.

Big Tech and innovative start-ups are wobbling their way into the intimacy economy: The deVinery Method is the missing Key. Everywhere you look, companies are trying to integrate desire and eroticism into AI... dating apps... gaming… chatbots... AI companions... therapy bots... fantasy platforms... sex tech... It’s inevitable: people are tired of swipe fatigue and shallow dopamine hits.

What’s emerging is an intimacy economy where authenticity, depth, and meaningful erotic connection are the real currency. People are ready to engage the truth of their desire in their quest for wholeness.

But here’s the problem: the current attempts are clumsy at best.

Big Tech is relying on click data, hover data, engagement loops. That’s not intimacy — it’s just behavioural exhaust.

Women-centred fantasy platforms are bravely entering the space, but most can only handle what is already socially acceptable.

Gillian Anderson’s brilliant book Want is a brave and much-needed platform for women to voice the truth of their sexual fantasies. However, when Bloomsbury asked women to submit fantasies, the form explicitly excluded whole categories that they knew women have.

👉 Result: amputated desire before it could even be seen.

Dipsea’s audio app for women is brilliant — but at Esther Perel’s event, they admitted they deliberately excluded certain fantasy categories because it was “too much of a minefield.”

👉 Result: desire reduced to what’s socially acceptable, leaving a shame-loop intact.

On the other end, Big Tech players like Grok and Meta are charging in with their “move fast and break things” philosophy, pushing sexual desire into bots and companions without a clue about the mechanics or the risks.

👉 Result: reckless free-for-all, collateral damage guaranteed. Intimacy is reduced to metrics, behavioural exhaust mistaken for connection.

And in the middle, the gaming industry — a natural arena for role play, fantasy, and skill-building — still swings between sterilising desire out of sight or letting it appear unskilled and unexamined.

👉 Result: no scaffolding for players to learn from their desire, only tropes or chaos.

Dating apps are also scrambling to enter the intimacy economy by framing themselves as relational skill-builders. The problem is, all relational intelligence is rooted in erotic intelligence — you can’t build one while amputating the other. Desire and love may look like they speak different languages, but in truth they form a single infinity loop, a snake biting its own tail. Most apps swing wildly between hookup-driven desire and romance-driven love.

Some, like Pure and Feeld, who are experimenting with love-desire integrated models with LGBTIQ-informed design, are doing valuable work in breaking down micro-identities. They create safer spaces for people to label and explore categories like kink, BDSM, swinging, polyamory and those curious about fulfilling their sexual fantasies, which is a huge step forward.

Even so, they still stop short. None of them map the erotic mind itself as an engine. They can multiply labels and polish consent checklists, but that only works at the surface level of the fantasy. What they can’t yet do is unlock the deeper architecture that turns those categories into experiences that actually generate the feelings people are fantasising about. Without that, even the most self-aware users end up circling: talking through what they want in excruciating detail, but still missing the engine underneath that sustains real intimacy, ongoing desire, and romance that lasts.

👉 Result: dating apps can multiply identities or amplify swipes, but by leaving the architecture of desire untouched, they sabotage both passion and romance — keeping users circling instead of fulfilled.

And then there’s sex tech. On the surface, this is the sector doing the best job of keeping up with the science. Haptics, biofeedback, and cutting-edge toys are being designed with care. Founders are reading the latest research, hiring consultants, and trying to make their products trauma-informed, socially conscious, and clinically sound.

On paper, it looks impressive. But here’s the catch: all of that research is still built on psychosexual models that don’t actually understand how the erotic mind works. They can explain desire in terms of childhood development, social conditioning, or trauma theory — and it sounds convincing. Yet when the rubber hits the road — in the moment of lived experience, when desire is actually unfolding — the limits show. The devices may hum, the data may track, but they can’t touch the deeper architecture of desire itself.

👉 Result: Sex tech can’t translate fantasy into lived experience without taking the fantasy literally or neutering it by turning it into therapy. It misses the engine underneath the fantasy that activates the psychological drivers of each person’s unique erotic wiring — and with that, misses the opportunity to generate an infinite variety of scenarios based on their personal erotic pattern.

Why are most platforms swinging from an unskilled free-for-all to overcontrolling moralising?

Because no one understands why we have these fantasies, let alone knows how to hold those desires safely.

As a result, much of the truth of human desire is amputated before it even gets a chance to be seen, which reinforces a sexual shame-loop.

Shame loops breed nameless dissatisfaction at best, and destructive behaviour at worst. Entitled tantrums demand the right to express sexual desire but lack the skill to pull it off, inevitably ending in collateral damage. Activists rush in to fix the problem but slip into overcontrolling moralising. That, in turn, creates the very monster they claim to be eradicating by pushing the truth of human desire underground, where it eventually erupts, still without skill or awareness. Which only makes them double down with even more control.

Around the loop we go.

And this isn’t just a problem for women’s empowerment apps. It’s everywhere. Humans of all genders are motivated by their desire drive. Companies that acknowledge this truth often try to integrate erotic desire into chatbots, gaming, porn sites, dating apps, sex tech, relationship coaching, or social events — but they all hit the same dead end. Without understanding the psychology of desire itself, they can’t navigate it with skill. Public pushback and legal risks either shut them down or twist them into contorted, distorted versions of what human desire actually looks like.

Others swing the opposite way — ignoring the risks and being defiantly sexual, or clamping down so hard they shadow-ban anything with a whiff of the erotic, including sex education and health and wellness tech.

So what shall we do? Stick our heads in the sand and pretend sex isn’t part of our tech innovations?

Here’s the thing: erotic intelligence isn’t fringe or optional. It’s not something relegated to the shady corners of the internet. It’s how humans already are in every moment of every day. Erotic intelligence is the root system that all relational intelligence grows out of. This is something we have to collectively face.

And it’s usually at this point of realisation that companies look for a consultant to solve the problem. They turn to psychologists, sexologists, or sex research.

Why Sexperts Fail at Designing Tech for Human Desire

When rubber hits the road in AI, fantasy platforms, gaming and sex tech product design, none of the current psychosexual models pass the stress test. Even top sexperts can’t explain how to translate human desire and fantasy into lived experience.

The limits of Psychology in understanding the erotic mind.

It seems obvious to call in psychologists and psychotherapists as the experts on human sexuality — after all, who else would know? But in reality, across the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia, most complete thousands of hours of graduate training and receive only a handful on sex — often a single workshop or a few scattered lectures. In the U.S., for instance, a psychology graduate may do 3,000+ hours of training but only 10 hours on human sexuality, and even those focus on dysfunction, abuse, or identity labels — not on erotic imagination or fantasy. They can talk at length about attachment theory or trauma but not the lived mechanics of desire. So the very people called in as “experts” are often the least equipped to navigate how the erotic mind actually works.

The limits of Sexology and Psychosexual training for understanding how our turn-ons work.

Sexologists and psychosexual therapists do far better than general psychologists. They clock hundreds of hours, whereas therapists get barely ten. AASECT, SAS, and Curtin sexology graduates study anatomy, pleasure, dysfunctions, diversity, even do 12-hour SAR labs to confront their own biases.

On paper, it looks comprehensive. But look closer: only about 15–25% of those hours explicitly focus on pleasure, and fantasy barely appears at all. The bulk of training is still built on psychology, trauma theory, and dysfunction codes — frames that explain why people are “broken” but rarely teach how to ride desire in real time or create a real-world sexual experience that activates the erotic mind as well as physiological and emotional responses. They can tell you about vaginismus, erectile issues, or “porn addiction,” but not how to follow the engine underneath a fantasy and activate someone’s unique erotic wiring.

The limits of Sex Research when it comes to integrating real-world sexual turn-ons into the future of sex and tech.

Sex researchers add another layer of credibility to the mix, with the Kinsey Institute often held up as the gold standard. Justin Lehmiller, for example, has published valuable surveys cataloguing what people fantasise about and why. His work points out that people often report stronger desire when they’re on holiday, linking it to novelty and freedom from social consequences back home.

Useful observations, yes. But here’s the catch: these explanations still sit squarely inside psychological and sociological frames. They tell you what people report not the mental mechanics of what arouses them. Researchers can speculate why in terms of novelty or reduced social risk — but they stop short of showing us the erotic drivers underneath the hood.

None of this tells you how to translate fantasy into lived experience, nor how to build technologies that can activate the underlying wiring of desire itself. What can you actually do with this insight other than book a flight and go on holiday? Or seek some vague quality called “novelty”? It doesn't provide you with much to work with if you want to consistently recreate the same effect.

That’s why even the sexperts keep hitting the same wall: amputating the truth of human desire in a well-meaning misfire to make it safe.

The truth is: you can’t build the intimacy economy if you don’t understand how desire itself works.

Even Esther Perel, the psychotherapist the world turns to for insights on the erotic mind, admits this gap. In conversation with Gillian Anderson, she said that sexual fantasies are the rawest access we have to the truth of human desire. She didn’t mean the truth of how we want to behave. She meant the truth of how erotic intelligence itself works. And yet, she noted, despite decades of searching, no one has been able to adequately explain why we have sexual fantasies or how they work.
