כי תבוא אל הארץ (כ״ו:א).

ההבטחה כי בני ישראל אכן יזכו ויבואו אל הארץ סוגרת מעגל עם הנאמר לאברהם אבינו בתחילת דרכו: ״לך לך...אל הארץ אשר אראך״. שם פירשנו, כדרך החסידים, את ״הארץ״ מלשון ״ארציות״ – וכן ״אשר אראך״ - אראה לך גישה חדשה לשאלת הארציות. הקריאה לאברהם היא להשאיר מאחור את היחס שהיה לו לחפצים ארציים ולענייני העולם הזה, ולהיפתח לראייה חדשה, היא ראיית כבודו של מקום הממלא את הכל, כי ״מלוא כל הארץ כבודו.״ זה היה עיקר ראשון בתורתו של הבעש״ט, ובזה אני רואה את עצמי כחסידו הנאמן.

אבל יש הבדל. עבור תלמידיו של הבעש״ט, פירוש הדבר היה לעזוב אחורה את דרך הסגפנות ושנאת הגוף והגשמיות שליוו את יהדותם. תפיסת העולם הקודמת, זו של רוב המקובלים שהיו בימיהם, היתה של עולם מלא טומאה וסכנה, הנתון לשלטונם של כוחות הרע, ושעל כן חייבים לאמן את הגוף עד שימאס בתענוגי עולם זה. ״הארץ״ היתה שייכת לגויים הבזויים אשר סביבם, ועל כן, סברו הללו, שצריך למעט ככל האפשר את ההתעסקות עמה. ״זו לא הדרך,״ הורה הבעש״ט. חייבים דווקא להעמיק בתוך הארציות כדי למצוא ולהעלות את הניצוץ הקדוש שבה, הזועקת להעלאה זו ומחכה לעזרתך.

אנו באים ממש מכיוון הפוך. ה״ארציות״ הקודמת שלנו היתה זו של הדוניזם וצרכנות שאין להם סוף. אנו חיים חיי נוחות ולוקסוס שלא חלמו עליהם דורות קודמים, ואנו בכל עת שואפים לעוד ועוד, מבלי לתת את לבנו לכך שאנו גורמים להשחתת משאבי הארץ. כן, התורה קוראת לנו לעזוב אחורה את ה״ארציות״ האתו ולהיכנס ל״ארץ״ המובטחת, ארציות אשר הזורחת בכבוד ה׳.

כשנגיע שמה, נרצה להודות על כך, לשים את ביכורי ארצנו בטנא ולהביאם ל״מקום אשר יבחר ה׳ אלוהיך לשכן שמו שם.״

רק בזאת תהיה הגאולה. האם בואנו לארץ, היינו ארץ ישראל הגשמית, הוא צעד ראשון בכך? האם עדיין אפשר להאמין? או האם גם את ארץ הקודש הפכנו לחול?

״את ה׳ האמרת היום...וה׳ האמירך (כ״ו:י״ז-י״ח)״.

ככה קורא את הפסוק בעל שפת אמת (תרמ״ב, ב): ״האמיר״ הוא בנין הִפעיל נדיר של ״אמר״ – ישראל הפכו את יהו״ה לאל האומר, מדבר.

אנו ״המאמירים״ של הקדוש ברוך הוא.

כך אני מבין את דבריו: משה היה המתורגמן שידע לתרגם את ביטויי האלוהים משפת קולות וברקים ללשון בני אדם (ע״פ שמ׳ י״ט:י״ט – ״משה ידבר והאלוהים יעננו בקול״). הפכנו אותו לאל מדבר. שמרנו על סוד האמירה האלוהית והרחבנו אותו במשך דורות רבים. התהליך הזה נקרא ״תורה שבעל פה.״ אבל כל זה היה כדי לשמר את המסר העיקרי ששמענו ״מפי הגבורה״: ״אנוכי״ ו״לא יהיה לך״ – היינו, אנכי - אני הגואל והמשחרר אותך מכל סוגי מצרים, ועל כן “לא יהיה לך” - אל תעבוד שום כוח אחר כאלוהים. כל השאר הוא מעין לבוש דיבורי, ״אמירה״ לשונית, המרחיב אמת זו והמושך את האלוהות אל תוך השיח האנושי. היום חייבים לשאול: האם שמרנו את הלבוש ושכחנו את מי שמלובש בתוכו?

אבל הבנת ״וה׳ האמירך״ בפירושו אינו פחות חשוב. על ידי התהליך הזה, גם אנחנו השתנינו. ה׳ האמירנו - הפך אותנו להיות דברו. נהפכנו לשם-דבר, לסיפור המסופר בכל העולם על עם שנגאל בדרך נס מן העבדות ובא לחירות של קבלת תורתו. ה׳ האמירך״ – הפך אותך ל״אמירה,״ לביטוי ארצי של תורתו.

איך שכח והזניח עם ישראל את המסר הזה. זאת התשובה עמה אנו חייבים לגשת לימי הקודש המתקרבים ובאים.

בתוך כל הקללות האיומות של פרק זה, פסוק זה נשאר קצת תמוה. למה חייב להיות איסור מיוחד על פסל שנשמר בסתר? ממי האדם מסתיר את האליל הזה? רק מאחרים או שמא גם מעצמו?

מה הוא הפסל הנסתר הזה? האם גם לנו יש כאלה?

Parashat Ki Tavo

כי תבוא אל הארץ אשר ה׳ אלוהיך נותן לך

“When you come to the Land that Y-H-W-H your God gives you (26:1).”

This refrain, heard so frequently throughout the Book of Devarim, hearkens back to the lekh lekha of Gen. 12:1: “Go forth from your land…to the land that I will show you.” There we followed the Hasidic reading of the word erets, “land,” as referring to artsiyyut, meaning “earthliness”: or “corporeality.” The call to Abraham is one of leaving behind his former attitude toward earthly things and learning to see them through a new perspective, that of Y-H-W-H. This refers to the presence of godliness throughout earthly existence; “the whole earth filled with God’s glory.”

But there is a difference. For the hasidic masters, that meant mostly a leaving behind of asceticism, a rejection of this-worldly concerns, and especially of the human body, as inherently defiled. They were emerging from a kabbalistic worldview that sought to create pure souls by training people to detach from the corporeal world, punishing the body until it would lose its attraction to earthly desire. The “land” belonged to the Gentile peasants around them; they should have as little to do with it as possible. “No, that is not the way,” the Ba‘al Shem Tov taught. The land, meaning the corporeal world, including the body, belongs to Y-H-W-H. Find and uplift the holy sparks that lie within the corporeal world and all its beauty. You will do this best by appreciating this world and finding it worthy of uplifting.

We come from a different place. The former “land” or attitude toward material things that we are called upon to leave behind is that of hedonism and reckless consumerism. We live with levels of creature comfort and luxury, without regard for the destruction we cause, and still we long for more. (Just think: What will you order from Amazon – think of it as the grim reaper of rainforests – today?) Yes, the Torah is calling us to leave that erets, that way of living, behind us, entering a new “land,” one of discovering the divine glory in each place and each moment as it is.

When you get there, you will want to put the first fruits of your new land in a “basket,” bringing them up (or “in?”) to “the place where Y-H-W-H your God chooses to make God’s name dwell.” That may be a private inner place or a communal place, one where you come to express your gratitude over this gift of transformed vision.

Understand that this new “land,” this new artsiyyut, that shines through with divine light, is a gift. It is not you who have either discovered or invented it; it is “the land that I will show you.”

את ה׳ האמרת היום להיות לך לאלוהים וללכת בכל דרכיו...וה׳ האמירך היום להיות לו לעם סגולה.

“You caused Y-H-W-H to speak…and Y-H-W-H caused you to speak (26:17-18).

The verb he’emir is a rare usage of amar in the hif‘il or causative form. This is how the Sefat Emet reads it, based on an interpretation ascribed to Yehudah Ha-Levi (Sefat Emet 1882, #2).

We, Israel, caused Y-H-W-H to speak; we brought the wonder of divinity into language. Moses was the one who was able to translate those divine thunderbolts into words of human speech (Ex. 19:19). We preserved that mystery of divine language and have expanded it endlessly, creating the “Oral Torah.” The simple core message that inspired all the rest, the one “we heard mi-pi ha-gevurah, from the mouth of that Power,” still echoes within us: “I am Y-H-W-H, liberating you from bondage. Therefore worship nothing else.” The rest is all our verbal expansion of that truth, ever continuing to bring Y-H-W-H further into the language of daily human living.

But in this same process, Y-H-W-H has transformed us into language. We were to become an earthly embodiment of the Divine Word. Our story, our way of life, has been a tale told throughout humanity about a people redeemed and seeking to live in that Presence. Becoming Torah is the role for which we are chosen.

How the Jewish people in our day has forgotten and abandoned this truth! That is the collective teshuvah with which we need to approach these fast-approaching Days of Awe.

Among the awful curses of this chapter, this one stands out. Why is there a special prohibition against those who keep their idols hidden, “in secret?” Hidden from whom? From others, or even from themselves?

NEO-HASIDIC TEACHINGS ON THE WEEKLY TORAH PORTION

Parashat Ki Tetse

כי תצא למלחמה על אויבך. “When you go forth to war against your foe (21:10).”

The Hasidic readings almost always take these “battlefield” passages as referring to the inner battle, the person’s ongoing struggle against the evil urge. One is reminded of the way the Sufis speak about jihad, as the constant war within the heart. The human soul is a battlefield, site of an ongoing struggle between good and evil.

This model of the divided inner self, caught up in the struggle between our two urges, reaches back into the earliest rabbinic sources. But it is first found in the book of Devarim itself, with its great emphasis on moral alternatives, the need to choose good over evil and the results of that choice. It stands in contrast to a different model, one that is perhaps best articulated in the daily morning prayer “My God! The soul You have placed in me is pure.” This becomes more central in the mystical tradition; the pure soul, “a part of God above,” struggling to emerge from behind kelipot, outer protective shells that harden and turn toward evil. It needs to break through these in order to become most fully itself.

The second model, that of soul and “shells,” is more optimistic than the first. The person, as soul, is essentially good, a goodness that is struggling to burst forth. But the first, the sense of ongoing battle within the self, defends itself as being more “realistic.” But which of them will be more useful in controlling our behavior, whether on the battlefield or in daily life?

This is an old question, forming the essentially different approaches to the person of the Hasidic and traditional Mussar traditions. Hasidism said “Tell the person how essentially good s/he is; this will help them reach toward and claim that self.” Therapy is all about compassion. Rabbi Nahman famously added: Treat yourself that way too. The Mussarists said no. Be tough with yourself. Moral change requires hard work that begins with confrontation. Do not allow your own kindness to lessen that demand.

Therapists of various schools still debate and struggle with approaches that are nothing other than modern versions of this question.

כי יקרא כן ציפור לפניך “If a birds’ nest happens before you (22:6).”

The rabbis originally objected to a reading of this verse that demonstrated God’s mercy. “If someone [interpreting this verse] says, ‘Your mercies reach even unto a birds’ nest!’ they should be silenced (Berakhot 33b).” Divine decrees are not to be reduced to anything, not even to mercy.

But the Kabbalists outdid the rabbis’ wildest dreams. The ‘bird” here, they claimed, is none other than shekhinah. Her “nest” is this world, the place where She has chosen to dwell. If you should happen upon that reality, you must learn to recognize it. Shekhinah is the mother bird; the eggs and chicks are human souls. We are that fragile, and the divine spirit hovers over us, seeking both to feed us and to protect us. The remaking of “God,” from the all-powerful father-figure in so many people’s imagination, into a mother bird, hovering over her chicks and feeding them, is in itself a worthwhile exercise.

But in other places the Kabbalists offer a “higher” reading. Here, the bird is binah, the “upper” divine Mother, surrounded by the emerging sefirot. Then you send Her off into the upper world and take the “baby birds,” the lower sefirot, which are the seven middot or moral qualities, and the eggs, souls and good deeds not yet born, and live through them.

Our mental trap will never catch the free-flying bird that is Y-H-W-H. But we can still “walk in God’s ways.”

TORAH FROM THE HEART is the title of my biggest life project, one I am completing this summer, in both Hebrew and English versions. It is a selection of my own favorite teachings of the early Hasidic masters, among whom I have spent the better part of my life. This selection explains why I have given so much of my life to this project. It contains about five or six teachings, sometimes more, for each Torah portion and festival in the yearly cycle. I am happy to announce that the Hebrew version will be published by Idra Books in Tel Aviv, probably next year, and the English by Littman Library in England, but not until 2028 or 29.

The Ba‘al Shem Tov and two or three generations of his followers developed an eye for reading the entire Torah text as a guide to the spiritual life. Torah means “teaching” and that is the lesson it is seeking to teach us. We only need to find it. It is this method of reading Torah that I hope to share with you, studying their texts as a call to us to follow in their footsteps, but in our own 21^st century way. I welcome you to join me in this preview and adventure.

Ten sessions, Mondays 12-1:30. Beginning October 5, immediately following Simhat Torah.

TWO GREAT KABBALISTS: ADVANCED READING AND CONVERSATION

Rabbenu Bahya ben Asher and Rabbi Menahem min Recanati are two of the most important Kabbalists (and two of the more readable) from the period of the Zohar. R. Bahya derives primarily from the Kabbalistic tradition of the RaMBaN. He is one of the third generation in that school who spells out Nahmanides’ teachings, which the original master had kept intentionally obscure. He writes exactly in the same decade as the publication of the Zohar, and occasionally quotes from it. Recanati is writing just after the turn of the 14^th century and extensively quotes from the Zohar. I find that he picks up on some of the most interesting passages in each parashah, alongside his own comments, which combine the Zohar and RaMBaN traditions in interesting ways. He will give us a chance to be studying quite a bit of Zohar along the way.

I will choose select texts from one or both for each weekly Torah portion. You’ll get them ahead of the class so you will have a chance to prepare, hopefully together with a hevruta. The course will meet on Tuesdays 1 to 2:30 Eastern Time. We will begin on September 29, giving us two weeks on parashat bereshit.

As always, the subtext of the course will be the question of how we “translate” the beauty of Kabbalistic language for our contemporaries and its role in our unfolding new mystical approach to Judaism.

The course is initially designed for my long-term students, especially those who completed my two-year course for rabbis. But we welcome all Rabbis and others with advanced Hebrew textual knowledge and some prior experience in reading Jewish mystical sources. The texts will be available only in Hebrew and Aramaic. Conversation primarily in English, but spoken participation in Hebrew is also welcome.

Cost for the course will be $400 for each 10 sessions. (For those who have completed one of my two Rabbinic Cohorts, the price will be $200.) כי יפלא ממך דבר למשפט...דברי ריבות בשעריך וקמת ועלית אל המקום אשר יבחר ה׳ אלוהיך

“When a matter is too wondrous for you to judge…[causing] controversies in your gate, rise up and ascend to the place which Y-H-W-H has chosen (17:8).”

The Hasidic readings (Toldot va-yeḥi, 247; Degel Shoftim) says that in order to resolve conflict, you need to go up to a higher place. The seven middot within the self exist in intentional tension with one another, giving rise to differing views and courses of action. We live in the world that they have created. We need love, awe, pride, triumph, submission, justice, peace, and all the rest in order to live our daily lives. But sometimes they stand in conflict with one another. We need to recall that in their Source, binah, the “Higher Place,” the womb in which they were all conceived, they are all one. Take them there. “Rise up and ascend el ha-makom, to Y-H-W-H, who is called the cosmic “Place.”

This truth works on an internal axis just as well as a vertical one. It applies to internal conflict as well as to those between parties. To resolve a conflict, go deeper, el ha-makom, closer to the Source. The self-humbling involved in taking that journey will in itself become the first step toward resolution.

והיה כשבתו על כסא ממלכתו וכתב לו את משנה התורה הזאת על ספר... והיתה עמו וקרא בו כל ימי חייו

“When the king is seated on his royal throne, he shall write this second teaching in a book, before the priests and Levites. It shall be with him, and he shall read in it all the days of his life (17:18-19).”

Can we imagine a democracy where “the first thing I’ll do when I get into office” will have to be copying out the constitution, in longhand, a document that will then remain on the president’s desk, right in front of him (or her), throughout her term? It might be a bit humbling to some of the people who have held that office.

A favorite Hasidic reading (Tif’eret Shelomo) sees the “king” here as the rebbe. He also calls for a subtle change in the translation of this verse. In order to be a true rebbe for others, you need to have the teaching within you at all times, and be able to read all the days of your life in it. This means not only that you read it each day, but that you must be able to use Torah to as a way of understanding everything that happens in your life. You must “find” each day of your life in the Torah.

The training of rebbes thus parallels that of psychoanalysts. It is having undergone your own analysis that most qualifies you to work with others. Only when you can find “all the days of your life” within Torah are you truly ready to “speak Torah” to others.

״ראה אנכי נותן לפניכם היום את הברכה ואת הקללה. הברכה אשר תשמעו למצות ה׳ אלהיכם...והקללה אם לא תשמעו (י״א:כ״ו-כ״ח)״.

הראיה והשמיעה באות יחד בפסוקים אלה. הדבר מזכיר את מעמד הר סיני, שבו היו ״שומעים את הנראה ורואים את הנשמע.״ ״היום״ בפסוק שייך לקורא, והוא יכול להיות כל יום אשר בו מוכן האדם לראות ולשמוע.

שימו לב שבחלק הראשון של הפסוק לא מופיעה המילה ״אם״. הברכה היא אשר תשמעו. ללמוד לשמוע באוזן הפנימית לדבר ה׳ היא ברכה גדולה בפני עצמה. ״היום״ קורא לכל אחד מאיתנו עםהמצווה המיוחדת שלו: ״כך תוכל להיות בצוותא עם ה׳ ביום הזה!״ אנו חייבים רק לשים לב, להקשיב ולשמוע. הזכות לשמוע היא ברכה גדולה מכולן. ״שכר מצווה מצווה,״ השכר היא המצווה עצמה. היכולת לשמוע מתוך הלב, היא הברכה.

לעומת זאת, הקללה באה רק ״אם״ לא תשמעו. לשמוע פירושו להיות ביחס, לא לשמוע משמעו להתנתק, והתנתקות זו משאירה חלל ריק באותו יום בנשמתו של האדם. חלל ריק חייב להתמלא – אם לא באור, אזי בחושך. הריקנות הזאת מזמינה כל מיני קללה לתוך היום.

״מקץ שבע שנים תעשה שמיטה (טו״ו:א)״. כאן אנו רואים שחל שינוי גדול בחברה ובדין התורה. השמיטה בפרשת בהר היתה כולה קשורה לאדמה וזכותה למנוחה אחת לשבע שנים. זאת היתה שמיטה לחברה שכולה חקלאית. כאן בספר דברים היא מרוכזת סביב החברה העירונית ועולם המסחר, ענייני הלווה והמלווה ודאגה לגורלם של עניים.

מאחורי הטקסט אנו רואים את המעבר של חברה מן השדה אל העיר. בני ישראל הם עתה חברה יותר עירונית ומסחרית, ואת דין שמיטת הקרקעות מעבירים על כן לשמיטת החובות והתרת חובותיהם של העניים. קשה לא למצוא כאן הד של תורתו של מרקס על המעבר מכלכלה המבוססת על החקלאות לזו שבנויה על הון. ״אמצעי הייצור״ אינם כבר אדמה ותבואתה אלא הון והשקעות. לכן חייבים ליישם את חוק השמיטה באופן חדש לגמרי.

אבל פסוק המפתח בא בהמשך הפרק: ״כי לא יחדל אביון מקרב הארץ (ט״ו:י״א)״. כאן יש הודאה שלא שמיטת ההלוואות ואף לא שום תיקון אחר שנציע ימגרו לחלוטין את בעיית העוני. חלומו של מרקס על חברה ללא מעמדות אינו מציאותי. תמיד יישארו בני אדם בתחתית הסולם הכלכלי שיהיו זקוקים ש״פתוח תפתח את ידך לאחיך לעניך ולאביונך בארצך“. עם קבלת ריבונות על הארץ, עליך מוטלת גם הדאגה לנצרכים – כולם - אשר בתוכה. אם הארץ שלך, כך הם ״שלך״ – ועליך לדאוג לצרכיהם.

בימים אלה, כאשר המילה ״סוציאליזם״ זוכה שוב לאוזן קשבת, ראוי שנזכור גם את כישלונו. אם אינני בעליו של דבר, ואם המדינה נושאת באחריות מלאה לדאוג לכל צורכי הכול, אין כל סיבה שאטפח בעצמי נדיבות או פתיחות הלב כלפי הנצרכים, ואף אין צורך לחנך אחרים לשם כך. ״המדינה כבר תדאג לזה!״ האכזריות והאדישות שנולדו מצורת חשיבה זו בחברה שיצרה ברית המועצות מוסיפות להטיל את צִלן עד היום.

שורשו של הרוע האנושי הוא קהות הלב. אנו רואים אותה היטב כיום בגילוייה הקיצוניים של הקפיטליזם. אך היא מצויה גם בקצה האחר של המנעד. הנביא מלמד אותנו בבירור כיצד עתיד העולם להיגאל וכיצד תשתנה החברה האנושית:

״וַהֲסִרֹתִי אֶת־לֵב הָאֶבֶן מִבְּשַׂרְכֶם, וְנָתַתִּי לָכֶם לֵב בָּשָׂר״ (יחזקאל ל״ו:כ״ו).

Parashat Re’eh

ראה אנוכי נותן לפניכם היום את הברכה ואת הקללה. הברכה אשר תשמעו למצוות ה׳ אלוהיכם...והקללה אם לא תשמעו.

“Look! Today I place before you blessing and curse. The blessing is that you listen to the mitsvot of Y-H-W-H your God by which I join Myself to you this day. And the curse is if you do not listen…(11:26-28).”

Seeing and hearing are joined together in these verses, just as they were at Sinai, when we “saw the audible and heard the visible.” The “today” of this verse is that of the reader; every day is such a day, if you will both look and listen.

Note that the positive part of the passage does not use the word “if.” The blessing is that (asher) you listen. Learning to listen with one’s inner ear to the mitsvah of each particular day is itself a tremendous blessing. The day calls forth with its enjoinment (understanding mitsvah as derived from tsavta). “This is how you may be joined to Y-H-W-H on this day!” We need only to be there to listen. The blessing does not come about because of our listening; the privilege of listening itself is the greatest of blessing. Perhaps this is what our sages meant by “The reward of a mitsvah is a mitsvah.” Such inner listening bears its own reward.

The curse, on the other hand, come upon us only “if you do not listen.” Listening means engagement; not listening is to become disengaged, and that leaves a day of emptiness. “Nature abhors a vacuum” – when we do not listen, the empty heart leaves a space for all sorts of “curses” to enter our day.

מקץ שבע שנים תעשה שמיטה “At the end of seven years, you shall declare a release (shemitah). This is the content of the release: every lender shall open his hand to release his neighbor (15:1).”

Here we see a great change in Israel’s early history. The shemitah (sabbatical) of parashat be-har (Leviticus 25) was all about giving the land a chance to rest. It seems to have been created for an agricultural society. Here in Devarim it is all about the human community, a matter of borrowing, lending, and proper treatment of the poor.

Behind the text here is a historical change. The Israelites have become a more urban and business-centered society. The old rule about letting go of the land for the year is now being applied to releasing the poor from debt. One cannot but think of Marx’s analysis of the switch from the land-based to the capital-based economy. The “means of production” is no longer the soil, but the capital one needs to borrow in order to undertake a new venture, to “bring something forth.” Therefore the rule of shemitah comes to be applied in an entirely new way.

But perhaps the most telling verse in this section comes a bit later: “For the poor will not stop existing from within the land (15:11).” This is an admission that the shemitah of loans, or any other do-good device we might create, will not solve the problem. Marx’s classless society is in fact a dream, one that turned out to be a nightmare. There will always be people at the bottom of the ladder, and they will need you to “open your hand to your brother, to your poor, to your needy, in your land.” If the land is yours, so too is responsibility for the poor and needy who live within it, all of them. They too are yours.

In these days when the word “Socialism” ‏is getting a new hearing, let us remember its failure. If I own nothing, if the state is responsible for totally caring for the needs of all, there is no reason for me, or for us as a society, to cultivate generosity or open-heartedness. “The state will take care of it!” The brutality and moral indifference that resulted from such thinking in the society created by the Soviet Union are still being felt. Just ask the people in Kiev.

The essence of human evil lies in hard-heartedness. We surely see it rampant today in the extremes of capitalism. Look at the vast sums being raked in by the Trumps and Musks and how little they care about the needy. But moral indifference can be found at the other end of the spectrum as well. The prophet tells us clearly how this world is to be redeemed and human society transformed:

“I will remove the heart of stone from you and give you a heart of flesh (Ez. 36:26).”

״כי ה׳ אלוהיך מביאך אל ארץ טובה ארץ נחלי מים מעיינות ותהומות יוצאים בבקעה ובהר (ח:ז)״.

אפילו בעידן שלנו, שבו ״ארץ ישראל״ שבה להיות מאד קונקרטית, אפשר לרגע גם לעסוק בתמונה רוחנית-נפשית של הארץ המובטחת. ״זכרתי לך חסד נעורייך, אהבת כלולותייך, לכתך אחריי במדבר, בארץ לא זרועה (יר׳ ב:ב)״. ההליכה אחרי ה׳ דרך המדבר האישי אמורה לקרב ולהביא אותנו ל״ארץ טובה, ארץ נחלי מים״. זה שייך ל״אני מאמין״ שלנו. נחלי מים אלו יזרמו ממעיינות פנימיים בתוכנו, שלא ידענו קודם לכן על קיומם. עבור החלום הזה אנו מוכנים לעבור את המדבר.

עלינו להבין שמעיינות אלה מצויים גם בהר וגם בבקעה. לפעמים מים אלה יזרמו כפי שציפינו, גולשים מראש הר של איזו חווית שיא שעברנו, לרגע, בפיסגת ההר. אבל יש ונצטרך לחפור בארות מים גם בבקעה ובשפלה, מקומות ורגעים נמוכים וקשים בחיינו, ולהבין שגם משם אפשר לשתות.

״ ועתה ישראל מה ה׳ אלוהיך שואל מעמך כי אם ליראה את ה׳ אלוהיך ללכת בכל דרכיו ולאהבה אותו ולעבוד את ה׳ אלוהיך בכל לבבך ובכל נפשך (י:י״ב) .״

כאן אנו מוצאים את ההגדרה הקלסית של עבודת ה׳ כתכלית החיים. היא משלבת יחד את האהבה והיראה. האחת איננה שלמה בלי השנייה. אנו עומדים מלאי השתאות ותחושת הפלא מול האחד: ״כמה מיליארד שנה אמרת שהפלנטה הזאת קיימת? כמה גלקסיות יש? איך עברנו אבולוציה מצורות חיים פשוטות ופרימטיביות כאלה?״ אנו ממש מטולטלים ומתגמדים מתחושת ההשתאות הזאת שהיא ״היראה העליונה.״ ולכך אנו מוסיפים את הטענה שאותו אחד העומד בתוך ומאחורי הכל, מכיר בכל אחד מאתנו וקורא לנו באהבה! כך הוא עושה לכל ברואיו, לכל צורת חיים אשר בתוכן הוא מתלבש. שהרי אם לא כך, כיצד ולשם מה באו צורות חיים אלו לעולם? האחד מבקש להיגלות מתוך אהבתו לכל יצור שישנו בעולם. ״ישמח ה׳ במעשיו (תה׳ ק״ד:ל״א)״. אורו זורח מתוך כל אחד מהם.

התגובה הטבעית שלנו לכך היא ״ואהבת את ה׳ אלוהיך״ – תוצר הנולד מתוך היראה. ״ויחד לבבנו לאהבה וליראה את שמך.״

Parashat ‘Ekev

“For Y-H-W-H your God is bringing you to a good land, a land of streams of water, of wellsprings and depths that emerge from both valley and mountain (8:7).”

Even in our age of a very concretized erets yisra’el, it is still permissible sometimes to spiritualize the notion of Promised Land. To follow Y-H-W-H through your personal wilderness truly does lead to “a good land.” This is our statement of faith. There will be streams of water that flow forth from mysterious depths within us, wellsprings that we did not know were there.

We have to understand, however, that these wellsprings are to be discovered both in the mountains and in the valleys. Sometimes the waters flow as we expect they will, gushing down from the heights of a “peak experience” and sustaining us in its glow. But at other times we will find the waters only in the low places, the valleys of our journey. There, too, we must learn that it is possible to dig for water. We are nourished by the water that flows from the lows of our life as well as from the highs.

“Right now, Israel, what does Y-H-W-H your God ask of you? Only that you be in awe of Y-H-W-H your God, walking in all His ways, loving Him, serving Y-H-W-H your God with your entire heart and soul (10:12).”

Here is the classic Jewish definition of the life of service. It requires a joining together of yir’ah, “awe,” and ahavah, “love.” Neither is whole without the other. We are filled with awe and wonder as we stand in the presence of the One. “How many billion years old did you say this planet is? How many galaxies are out there? How did we evolve from such primitive forms of life?” We are overwhelmed and dwarfed by our sense of astonishment. That is yir’ah ila‘ah, a sense of awe at the majesty of existence.

But then we add the assertion that this underlying One of the cosmos called Y-H-W-H knows you, loves you, calls out to you, specifically, in a unique way. Otherwise, why were you brought into existence? The One desires to be manifest in each of its creatures. Yismaḥ Y-H-W-H be-ma‘asav. Divinity rejoices in being manifest through each unique form of existence that it brings forth (Ps. 104:31).

To this we can only respond by opening our hearts to receive that love and to respond to it with our own love. Now we are ready to serve.

״וידבר ה׳ אליכם מתוך האש. קול דברים אתם שומעים ותמונה אינכם רואים (ד:י״ב)״. שימו לב למעבר כאן מזמן העבר להווה. משה מספר על מעמד הר סיני לדור חדש, שרוב רובו נולד אחרי האירוע המכונן הזה. הוא רוצה לחזק את התחושה שהדברים קורים גם להם. ״קול דברים אתם שומעים״ כולל גם את כל הדורות העתידים לבוא. התורה שלנו היא כזאת שמגלה את עצמה לאוהביה (כלשון הזהר) על ידי הדיבור החי. התגלות התורה היא ״קול גדול ולא יסף (דב׳ ה:י״ט)״ – קול שאין לו סוף, המהדהד בכל הדורות. ״תורה,״ ההוראה האלוהית, לא נמצאת רק בספרים מן העבר.

אבל ״תמונה אינכם רואים.״ אפילו אם בספר שמות כתוב לגבי שבעים הזקנים ״ויראו אל אלוהי ישראל,״ הרי שכאן משה רוצה להרחיק את האלמנט הוויזואלי שבהתגלות ה׳. המצווה של ״לא תעשו לכם פסל כל תמונה״ מתחזקת אם גם בעָמדינו מול הר סיני לא היה צד של ראייה.

ומה לגבי ״וכל העם רואים את הקולות ואת הלפידים (שמ׳ י״ט:)?״. כן, אומר הרבי מסדליקוב, נכד הבעש״ט. בדיוק כך! הם היו מסתכלים בכל התופעות הדרמטיות שנלוו למתן תורה, במקום לשים לב לדברים עצמם. אילו היינו שמים לב רק ל״אנוכי״ ו״לא היה לך״ היוצאים מפי הגבורה, לעולם לא היינו שוכחים.

״ויוציאך בפניו בכוחו בגדול ממצרים (ד:ל״ז)״. בתוך כל הפרוזה הנשגבה בפרשה הזאת, רוב המפרשים לא שמו לב לביטוי המעניין שיש בפסוק הזה, שדווקא ״בפניו״ הוציאנו ממצרים.

שוב אנו נתקלים בשאלה של ראייה. האם במצרים ראו ישראל את פני ה׳, והאם על ידי ראיית פניו נגאלו? אבל פני יהו״ה אינם נראים, אפילו למשה! ״וראית את אחורי ופני לא ייראו (שמ׳ ל״ג:כ״ג)״. אם כן, מפגש האדם עם פני ה׳ אינו עניין של ראיה. אנו עומדים לפני ה׳, הוא גואל אותנו בפניו, אבל פנים אלו אינם נראים. אנו עומדים מול פני האל ומקבלים את המאור שבהם. פני ה׳ מאירים בפני אלה הפונים אליו, אפילו בלי שנראֵם. הלב הוא שנפתח לפנים אלו, לא העיניים. זה פירוש ״יאר ה׳ פניו אליך ויחונך (במ׳ ו:כ״ו)״ – שיהיה מאיר פנים אליך, שיתקרב אליך ברצון. מאור פניו המאיר עליך יעשה אותך לאדם מחונֵן, אדם הַמְּחוֹנֵן אחרים, היינו שתהיה גם אתה מקור של אור אלוהי זה, ותעביר אותו הלאה לאחרים.

Parashat va-Ethanan

וידבר ה׳ אליכם מתוך האש קול דברים אתם שומעים ותמונה אינכם רואים

“Y-H-W-H spoke to you from the midst of the fire. You hear the sound of words, but you see no image (4:12).”

The shift into the present tense in this verse is striking. Moses is recounting the events at Sinai for a new generationת born in the wilderness and about to enter the land. But he wants to retain the vividness of the present tense. So too is he saying it to all generations. Our Torah is one that reveals itself to those who encounter it as the living word. “A great sound that never ends – (5:19),” echoing through all the ages. The revelation of Torah is a living, life-giving, and never-ending process. “You hear the sound of words,” in the ever-present tense. “Torah,” meaning divine teaching, (the dharma, if you prefer) is not found only in books.

“But you see no image” – even though Exodus (24:10) says that the elders “saw the God of Israel!” But Moses here wants to distance us from the visual element in revelation. The commandment “You shall make no graven idol or image” will be stronger if there indeed was no image seen, even at Sinai.

But then what of “All the people saw the thunderbolts and torches (Ex. 20:15)?” That’s just the point, says the BeSHT’s grandson, R. Ephraim of Sudilkow. They were busy looking at the side-show, all the “special effects” that accompanied the revelation! Had we truly paid attention and heard those first two commandments – “I am!” and “Worship nothing else!” - as powerfully spoken by Y-H-W-H, we never could have forgotten them.

ויוציאך בפניו בכוחו בגדול ממצרים

“He brought you forth from Egypt by His face, by His great power (4:37).”

This verse often goes unnoticed amid all the rich prose of this chapter. At first glance, “By His face” seems to contrast with the verse we have just explained. At Sinai there was only a voice. But did Israel see the face of Y-H-W-H as they were redeemed from Egypt? Doesn’t “face” imply a visual sort of revelation? What does it mean that they were redeemed “by the face?”

But the face of Y-H-W-H is not seen, even by Moses. “You may see My back, but My face will not be seen (Ex. 33:23).” The human encounter with God’s face is not one of seeing. It is one of receiving its light, in which our own faces becoming vehicles for the transmission of divine light. “May Y-H-W-H cause His face to shine upon you (Num. 6:26)” does not mean that you will “see” God’s face. It is a blessing to help us receive that light without ever looking directly into it. “May the light of God’s face shining into you make you into a person of grace” is its meaning, enabling you to pass that light on to others.

It is by the light of that Face shining through us that we are redeemed from all our Egypts.

״ פנו וסעו לכם (א:ז)״. ״ פנו״ היא המילה הראשונה בהדרכות משה לעם ישראל בנאומיו. השורש פ-נ-ה בעברית הוא רב-משמעותי, ויכול להוביל לאחד מכמה כיוונים. אפשר שהוראתו ״לפָנים״ דהיינו ״קדימה!״ או לקראת הפָנים, מעין ״פנו אלי!״. ושמא הכוונה לפנימיות, לפנות פנימה. ״סעו לכם״ בצורתו הלשונית מקביל ל״לך לך״ הנאמר לאברהם, שאותו נוטים בחסידות לפרש ככה, פנֵה פנימה אל עצמך.

הדבר הראשון שדורשת תורת משה, המתפרשת פה לקראת דור חדש, הוא היכולת לפנות, לשנות את כיוון החיים. פנו וסעו לכם פירושו תפנו להבנה שהחיים הם מסע, וחייבים לפנות לכך, לשים לו לב. אתם לא כאן סתם לבלות את הזמן, לחכות עד שהחיים יגיעו לתומם וליהנות קצת בדרך. יש לפני כל אדם מסע של גילויים, גילוי עצמך וגילוי ה״ארץ המובטחת״ האישית שלך. זהו מסע שאין לו סוף. כדאי לפנות אליו ולצאת לדרך.

״ואומר עליכם בעת ההיא לאמור...הבו לכם אנשים חכמים ונבונים וידועים לשבטיכם (א:ט-י״ג)״.

כאן התחלת שיטה חדשה במינויָם של שופטים ומנהיגים בעם ישראל. הם ייבחרו על פי חכמתם ותבונתם, לא על פי ירושה. אולי היה זה קל וטבעי יותר למשה למנות את בניהם הבכורים של ראשי השבטים מדור יציאת מצרים, המוזכרים בתחילת ספר במדבר. הכהונה עוברת מאב לבן, וכך תהיה גם המלוכה העתידה לקום בישראל. אז למה לא גם ראשות השבטים?

גם כאן אפשר לראות ניצנים קטנים ממה שתהיה היהדות. ראשי הדור השופטים את העם הם תלמידי החכמים, וזה אינו דבר שעובר בגֶנים או בירושה. היו מקרים בהיסטוריה שניסו לנהוג אחרת (צאצאיו של הלל הזקן, בני בניו של הרמב״ם, ובעיקר בחסידות), אבל השיטה הכללית אצלנו היא זו של ירושה רוחנית עוברת מרב לתלמידיו, לא מאב לבן. שימו לב גם ששופטים אלה היו חייבים ל״שמוע בין אחיכם (א:ט:ז).״ היכולת לשמוע היא תכונה חיונית לשופט צדק ולכל מנהיג.

שימו לב גם שמינוי השופטים מתקשר פה לנרטיב של במדבר י״א ולא לזה של יתרו בשמות י״ח. בהעברה הזאת, ספר דברים גם משנה את מינוי שבעים הזקנים. אין פה רמז לכריזמה המתוארת שם בבמדבר, נחיתת רוח הקודש על השבעים. כאן הם נבחרים על פי שכלם ותבונתם בלבד.

בדורות שאחרי משה, אין לנו כבר נבואה. אנו נשארים רק עם תורה ועם השכל שלנו בהבנת המסר שלה עבורנו. רק עם הזמן אנו מגיעים לתובנה שגם השכל הזה הוא מתנה אלוהית.

Parashat Devarim (Deuteronomy 1:1)

פנו וסעו לכם “Turn and get yourselves moving (1:7).” “Turn” is the first word of Moses’ instruction to the people. The Hebrew penu is an opening that can be read in various ways. Is it leading le-fanim, “go forward?” Penu is related to panim, the “face?” Is he saying: Face your future?” Or is there an inward turn demanded here? The following two words u-se‘u la-khem are the same rhetorical form as the lekh lekha said to Abraham, which we often read as “go into yourself.” Is there the same sense here? “Make that inward journey and face yourselves?”

How about this? Moses is now giving his Torah to the new generation. Its first word is turn, change your life. Penu u-se‘u la-khem means “Make the turn to understanding that life is a journey. You are not just here “hanging out,” waiting for it to be over and having some fun along the way. Do not waste the opportunity of life; soon you will discover that it has passed too quickly. Your life is all about something, a journey of discovery. Turn into yourselves and discover that you are on the journey to your Promised Land. This is a journey that will accompany you all your days, making them rich with meaning. That’s all that matters. Make the turn and get yourself going.

ואומר עליכם בעת ההיא לאמור...הבו לכם אנשים חכמים ונבונים וידועים לשבטיכם “I said to you at that time…Take for yourselves wise, understanding, and recognized people in each of your tribes, and I will appoint them your leaders (1:9-13).”

This is the beginning of a new sort of leadership for Israel. The choice of leaders is to be made on the basis of wisdom and understanding, not heredity. It would have been natural for Moses to appoint the sons of each of the deceased tribal elders to take their fathers’ roles. Priesthood was heredity in Israel. Kingship was going to be as well. Why not tribal leadership also?

Here we may see one of several ways in which Sefer Devarim is the beginning of what later came to be called Judaism. Leadership is to be based on wisdom and understanding, not heredity. Note also the qualification of “listening among your brothers (1:16).” Being a leader requires the ability to listen well.

Here the Devarim version of how to appoint judges is an interesting combination of the accounts in Shemot 18 and Be-Midbar 11. In recounting the Be-Midbar story, Devarim changes the nature of that event. Instead of the charism of shared prophetic spirit that poured down upon the elders (Be-Midbar 11:17), the tribal leaders are called upon to judge by their own understanding. This sounds more like Yitro!

After Moses, the text is saying, we will have no more prophecy. All we are left with is his teaching and our own understanding of its message for us. For this we need wise leaders, not family heirs. The rabbinic world of masters and disciples has its first roots here.

Eventually we come to learn, of course, that such wisdom is itself a divine gift.

״וידבר ה׳ אל משה לאמור נקום נקמת בני ישראל...וידבר משה אל העם לאמור...לתת נקמת ה׳ במדין (ל״א:ג)״.

הפתיחה לפרק האיום והמכאיב הזה, אולי הקשה ביותר בכל התורה, כבר מגלה לנו את הבעייתיות שבו. ה׳ מבין שהמדיינים הם אויב מר לישראל, אותם התקיפו באופן גס ומטמא, והוא מרשה להם ליטול נקמתם מהם. בפיו של ה׳ היא נקראת ״נקמת ישראל,״ התקפת-נגד על אויב, מעשה שהעם זקוק לו. אבל כאשר יוצא הצו מפיו של משה, הופכת הנקמה להיות ״נקמת יהו״ה״. התקפה נגדנו היא נגד אלוהינו. ובכן הריגת מדיינים הופכת להיות חובה דתית.

כְמָרִים ואנשי דת מכל העולם, כולל רבנים צבאיים בישראל, מדברים כך לצבאותיהם לפני צאתם להרוג ולאבד. ״מלחמה זו היא מלחמת מצווה, רצון ה׳. הוא יושעינו ויעזור לנו להתגבר, כי אנו לוחמים בקרב שלו.״ כהני דת משני הצדדים דיברו כך במלחמות העולם של המאה העשרים, וכן בעיראק, באפגניסטן, ושאר המקומות הקשים ביותר, ואף בארץ הקודש.

איני אומר זאת מנקודת ראות של פציפיזם גמור. יש מלחמות שחייבים להילחם בהן, ויש אויבים שחייבים להביס. אבל אפשר להסביר בלשון בני אדם למה חייבים להילחם בהם, ולא לתת אמתלה של ״רצון ה׳״ או ״מצווה מן השמים.״ בורא כל הנשמות אוהב את כל ברואיו באופן שווה ומתאבל על נפילת כל אחד מהם. ״עמו אנכי בצרה״ אינו רכוש פרטי של הצד שלנו.

אולי פרק זה של ״נקמת ה׳”, כולל ציוויו של משה לשוב ולהרוג את הנשים והטף, נשמר בתורה כדי להעיד בפנינו על דברים איומים שגם אנו מסוגלים לעשות. חשוב שנקרא אותו ושנזדעזע בשמענו אותו. קל מדי עבורנו בתור יהודים, שהיינו קרבנות ולא בעלי כח במשך כל כך הרבה דורות, לומר ש״טיהור אתני״ ורצח עם הם דברים שאחרים עושים ולא אנחנו. חייבים לזכור מה עשינו למדיינים. חייבים היום יותר מאי פעם.

אהרון ומרים כבר מתו, ומשה נשאר לבדו לשמוע ולהבין את דבר ה׳. אולי אילו היה אחיו אהרון, רודף השלום, עדיין בחיים, היה הוא מצליח להרגיע אותו. ואולי אחותו, מרים, שידעה לשמוע את דבריו כבאים מבירא עמיקתא, מעומק הבאר, במקום מראש ההר, היתה יכולה לעזור לו לפרש אחרת את מה ששמע. אבל משה נשאר לבדו, ואין לו אלא את האינסטינקט שבו החל את דרכו, כאשר הרג את המצרי.

״ונפש אדם ששה עשר אלף (ל״א:מ)״. אלה היו כנראה מחצית מהבתולות שנשמרו בחיים. אלה ניתנו לאנשי החיל לעשות בהן כרצונם. השאר היו רכושם של כל ישראל, זאת אומרת שנשלחו למכירה פומבית כשפחות. ״נפש אדם״ אלה כלולים ברשימות השלל אחרי הצאן, הבקר, והחמורים.

עלינו לזכור דבר זה במלוא הרוע והאכזריות שבו. כן, גם אנחנו, בני ישראל, העם הנבחר, מסוגלים לעשות דברים איומים כאלה. כדאי לשים לב.

״אלה מסעי בני ישראל (ל״ ג:א)״.

אם יש קבלה חדשה שעתידה להיגלות בדורות הללו, כבר מזמן חשתי שחלק ממנה תצא מתוך קריאה מחודשת בפרשה זו המספרת את המסעות והתחנות של ישראל בדרכם לארץ ישראל. במסורת קריאת התורה בבית הכנסת האשכנזי יש תווים מיוחדים הנהוגים בפסוקים אלה, השייכים רק להם ולשירת הים. תארו לכם את משה רבינו רושם אותם בחותמו את ספר התורה, לפני שפתח בנאומים האחרונים שלו שמהווים את ספר דברים. הוא כבר מבין שלא יזכה להיכנס לארץ המובטחת, ולא יהיה לו יותר חלק במה שעתיד לקרות לבני עמו. אולי כפיצוי לכך, הוא מחליט להשאיר בידי יורשיו רשימה מפורטת של כל המקומות שעברו וחנו בהם במשך כל ארבעים שנות מסעם. אולי הוא רצה שיזכרו הדורות המיושבים ״איש תחת גפנו״ את הימים שבהם היו עדיין שבטים נודדים. אבל יש לי גם תחושה שחתום פה משהו נוסף, מעין סוד שעדיין לא התפענח.

כאן בחרתי בכמה מן השמות שניתן לנחש את משמעותם. אבל מי יודע? מאיזה אֵלים ברחו לפני שהגיעו לים סוף? ומה הוא ״מדבר סין״ הקודם לסיני (לקוראי האנגלית זה נשמע במיוחד לא טוב.)? ומי דפק אותם בדפקה? הר שפר נשמע מקום יפה – למה משם מיד לחרדה? ומשם התחילו לשיר במקהלה? ומהו המקום הזוועתי הזה שלא זכה לשם אחר אלא ״תחת?״. אנו באמת לא מבינים פה כלום.

אבל זאת אנחנו כן מבינים. בני ישראל נשארים עם נודד הרבה מאד שנים, מאות ואלפי שנה אחרי שנכתבה התורה. איך ידע משה שזאת תהיה סגולתם וגם גורלם של בני עמו, שיהיו נודדים ממקום למקום ויהיו זקוקים למזכרת כזאת, מעין מפת זיכרונות לעם נודד?

אולי אפשר למצוא משמעות מקבילה בעוד שמות של מקומות מסענו. בואו ננסה. ״ויסעו מפומבדיתא ויחנו בקהיר. ויסעו מקהיר ויחנו בסרגוסה. ויסעו מסרגוסה ויחנו בוונציה. וורמס. שטרסבורג. פראג. ברדיצ׳ב. אודיסה. ניו יורק. סקרסדייל. אן ארבור. פרדס חנה.

פעם הייתי סבור שסיפור זה שייך רק ליהודי התפוצות, שהם עדיין יהודים נודדים, ולא ליושבי הארץ. אבל עכשיו אני רואה שישראלים נוסעים בכל העולם כמעט יותר מכל לאום אחר, ומגיעים למקומות שלא חלמו עליהם רוב תושבי התפוצות! האם אין לדבר סוף? המהפכה הציונית לא הצליחה להוציא את החשק לנדוד מ״היהודי הנודד.״
