We can never fully know what another person has lived through, what private battles they have faced, or what it has taken for them to keep moving forward. Yet challenges and hardships can become important building blocks in the development of resilience.

Difficult experiences do not automatically make someone stronger, and hardship itself should not be romanticised. However, when people are supported to recognise their strengths, draw on previous successes, and make meaning from what they have endured, adversity can help build capability. It can reveal courage, resourcefulness, flexibility, perseverance, and the ability to ask for and receive support.

Resilience is therefore not a fixed quality that someone either has or does not have. It is an ongoing process that develops through experience, relationships, reflection, and repeated opportunities to recover and respond. Each challenge can add to a person’s understanding of what they are capable of, creating a growing foundation of knowledge and resources they can draw upon when facing the next difficulty.

Milton H. Erickson, an unconventional and innovative psychiatrist and pioneer in hypnosis, had a profound influence on the development of Solution Focused Practice.

One of his most significant contributions was the principle of utilization: the idea that whatever the client brings—their words, beliefs, symptoms, resistance, strengths, history, relationships, or life circumstances—can be respectfully used as part of the therapeutic or coaching process.

Steve de Shazer, Insoo Kim Berg, and their colleagues at the Brief Family Therapy Center were influenced by Erickson’s pragmatic and respectful orientation. This principle became deeply influential in the development of Solution Focused Brief Therapy and Solution Focused Coaching.

Rather than viewing clients as resistant or dysfunctional or in need of expert correction, Erickson approached each person as uniquely resourceful. He listened closely to the client’s language, worldview, values, patterns, and lived experience, and used these as entry points for change. This represented a significant shift away from imposing fixed interpretations or techniques. Instead, the practitioner’s task was to join the client’s reality and work creatively with what was already present.

Utilization can be seen in the way practitioners use the client’s own words, hopes, strengths, previous successes, and everyday knowledge as material for change. A client’s description of “just wanting things to be calmer” becomes a doorway into exploring what calm would look like. A small exception—“It was a little better last Tuesday”—becomes evidence that change is already possible. Even uncertainty, hesitation, or difficulty can be used constructively by asking, “How have you managed to keep going despite this?”

Erickson’s utilization principle helped shape one of the central assumptions of Solution Focused Practice: clients already possess resources, abilities, relationships, and experiences that can contribute to meaningful change. The role of the practitioner is to notice, amplify, and make use of these resources in ways that support the client’s preferred future. His work reminds practitioners that nothing the client brings is wasted. Every response, story, strength, exception, and hope can become useful when approached with curiosity, respect, and creativity.

Being aware of this important aspect, enables us to stayed turned to possible golden nuggets as a key in meaningful change.

Working with teams and groups is one of the most meaningful and energising aspects of my work. There is something powerful about facilitating a Team Coaching session and witnessing a team move through challenges toward a breakthrough moment.

Facilitating a group gathered around a shared purpose—such as navigating grief or enhancing work-life balance—is equally meaningful, yet the process is different from team coaching. While both involve creating a safe and purposeful space for reflection, dialogue, and learning, they require distinct skills, intentions, and facilitation approaches.

Understanding these similarities and differences is essential for practitioners who want to work effectively with both teams and groups.

For those interested in developing as a Team Coach, we offer the Advanced Certification in Team Coaching.

For those who would like to strengthen their skills in facilitating groups, we are offering Facilitation Skills with Groups & Teams on 10–11 August.

A Solution-Focused Approach with Children & Adolescents

Working with children and adolescents invites practitioners into a world shaped by play, imagination, relationships, and rapid change. Therapeutic approaches therefore benefit from being developmentally attuned- aligned with young people’s cognitive capacities, emotional expression, and the everyday ecological contexts of family, school, and peer life.

For many young people, a counseling session can feel like an interrogation about what went wrong, like explaining a broken toy they never intended to damage. Questions such as “Why did you do that?” often lead to shrugs, silence, or the familiar “I don’t know.” SFBT shifts this dynamic. Instead of playing detective to uncover deficits, the therapist becomes a co-explorer on a treasure hunt, operating from the assumption that the “treasure”, the child’s skills, resilience, and creativity, is already present and waiting to be noticed.

Early in my career, a single session reshaped how I listen.

A young girl sat across from me. The file on my desk told one story, a story of significant trauma. My training had prepared me to follow it there, to let the wound define the work. But the solution-focused stance asks something different of a clinician: not to ignore pain, but to remain curious about the life that continues alongside it.

So, I asked her one simple question:

“Can you tell me about a day recently that felt even a little bit good?”

She straightened almost immediately. “Art class,” she said. A classmate had been struggling to finish a project, and she had leaned over to help. When the teacher noticed their teamwork, she felt a quiet pride she hadn’t quite expected.

I stayed with that moment.

“With everything you’ve been carrying lately,” I asked, “how did you manage to notice someone else needed help, and actually do something about it?”

She gave a small shrug. “I just like helping people.”

In five words she revealed something no assessment had captured: a durable strength already active in her daily life. The traumatic experience was real, but so was her resilience, and it was not the whole story.

We spent the remainder of the session tracing where this quality of care appeared, in friendships, classroom moments, and small acts of cooperation. The therapeutic task shifted from excavating damage to amplifying a resource already sustaining her.

This moment captures the essence of solution-focused practice. It does not ask us to look away from difficulty; rather, it invites us to hold a wider frame- one spacious enough to notice the strength sitting beside the struggle, waiting to be named.

Sometimes it arrives quietly.

Sometimes it sounds like a shrug and five simple words.

That evening, I wrote this in my diary.

What the File Didn’t Say

The file said trauma; the room said wait.

A small girl arrived with more than her weight.

I asked for a moment that felt almost right-

she found one in art class, in someone else’s light.

She leaned over gently, helping a friend through.

“I just like helping people,” she said, and I knew.

The wound was real, but not all of her story:

strength was still there, quiet in its glory.

Hope was a spark she carried inside,

a small steady flame she did not hide.

And somewhere beyond what the file could see,

a young heart was already learning to fly free.

Solution-Focused Horse Whispering in the Year of the Fire Horse

The Academy of Solution Focused warmly invites coaches, counsellors, supervisors, and solution-focused practitioners to a 90-minute online meet-up exploring the theme: “Solution-Focused Horse Whispering in the Year of the Fire Horse.”

While the title is playful, the reflection is purposeful. The metaphor of “horse whispering” points to attentiveness, partnership, responsiveness, and skilful influence without force — working with energy rather than against it. Much like solution-focused practice, it invites us to notice what is already alive and moving: hope, readiness, courage, direction, and possibility.

In the spirit of the Fire Horse, we’ll reflect on vitality, momentum, strength, freedom, and purposeful movement — both in our conversations with clients and in our own professional growth.

This is not a lecture, but an open and collegial discussion. Together we will explore questions about responsiveness, energy, trust, courage, and staying light yet purposeful in our work.

/ LISTENING THAT TRULY MATTERS

What the character 聽 tīng can teach us about supporting clients in transition

Transitions are rarely straightforward. Whether it’s moving countries, changing roles, or stepping into a new life phase, clients often experience a mix of excitement, loss, and uncertainty. As therapists and coaches, we want to help them move forward—but how do we do this without rushing past what they’re really feeling?

It all starts with how we hold space and listen to what our clients want. The Chinese character tīng 聽 (to listen) is a beautiful reminder of what deep listening looks like. Tīng is made up of many parts and reminds us to focus on:

• Ear: genuinely hear the client’s story and perspective

• Eye: notice non-verbal cues and subtle signs of coping

• Heart: connect empathetically to what is really important to them

• King: show full respect and value for the client

• One / Whole attention: be fully present, noticing strengths, resources, and small steps forward

This aligns perfectly with Solution Focused listening, where our role is to hold space for both struggle and progress, notice what’s working, and co-construct a path toward the client’s preferred future. By listening with all our senses, we can guide clients to recognise their strengths, clarify what they want more of, and take meaningful next steps - even in the middle of loss or uncertainty.

For therapists and coaches who want to strengthen their skills in guiding clients through transitions with empathy and clarity, Dr Jane Tuomola will be exploring these principles and practical applications in a 2-day Solution Focused Workshop on Thriving Through Transitions on March 26th and 27th in Singapore. Together, we’ll practice listening, and asking questions that honour both struggle and progress, and supporting clients to thrive in change.

/ ACHIEVING MASTERY

Recently I was asked to contribute to a book on “Mastery in Coaching.” I’ve been pondering this idea for quite some time. What does it mean to achieve a level of mastery in your craft? Mastery is not a single moment in time or a destination. Rather it is an accumulation of refining your craft. With any skill you want to develop, there is a commitment to the practice, review, feedback and reflection on what you’ve done. It’s recognizing when mastery already shows up. Partnering with others with whom you can feel safe, who provide honest feedback and humility to accept where you need to grow and develop. One does not achieve mastery alone, nor can you rush the process. Mastery is a path, a journey, rather than a place in which you arrive. For those that walk this path, the reward is not only proficiency but transformation - the realization that the path itself is the point.

What I deeply appreciate about Solution Focused Practice, is the embodiment of "recognizing when mastery already shows up.” This is our area of interest when working with our clients. Our clients often do not realize they possess threads of mastery. Walking a challenging path is part of the journey of reaching mastery. No short-cuts. Years ago, I read an article called “The Hurried Therapist.” It described what some beginning therapists try to do: jump through the hoops quickly and achieve master-therapist level as quickly as possible.

It’s a nice reminder to me to be patient and not rush. Accept that hardship and challenge and time is part of the development. Mastery is an on-going path.

I hope this year, in 2026, as a community, that we can continue to walk the journey together and recognize ‘mastery’ in each other. We have several platforms in which we can learn, grow and support each other. On behalf of our team, we look forward to continuing the journey together.

/ “Undercover SF”

Many practitioners in our SF community work in isolation and often express a strong desire to grow, connect, and share the power of Solution Focused practice. Yet many find it difficult to do so—sometimes because colleagues are skeptical, uninterested, or simply unfamiliar with SF principles. This can leave practitioners feeling discouraged, unsupported, or unsure of how to build momentum.

I often encourage what I call “Undercover SF” or “Guerrilla SF.” Instead of announcing or defending the approach, simply let the work speak for itself. Use SF quietly and consistently in your conversations, meetings, and interactions. Over time, others begin to notice the quality of your questions, the results you generate, and the positive impact you create.

Curiosity follows. Colleagues start asking what you are doing differently, why your interactions feel so effective, and how you’re able to support change so elegantly. This often leads them to explore SF themselves—sometimes even enrolling in training.

This pattern has happened repeatedly over the years and continues to be a delightful reminder that the best advocacy for Solution Focused practice is its impact. When others see the results, they naturally want to learn more.

/ The epitome of Resilience…

I often take walks in the Nature Reserve near my home. Recently, walking along the water canal, I paused to look at the lotus flowers. Dave captured this shot. Some were submerged under water, others basking in the full sunlight. Beneath the surface in the canal are murky and muddy waters. Sometimes I see turtles, fish, monitor lizards, and a big family of otters. And a beautiful variety of birds make their home amid the trees. Stunning and awe-inspiring.

The lotus flower is one of the most ancient and deepest symbols of our planet. The lotus flower grows in muddy water and rises above the surface to bloom with remarkable beauty. At night the flower closes and sinks underwater, at dawn it rises and opens again. The lotus flower is a perfect symbol of Resilience.

I believe this is what we do in Solution Focused Practice. Highlight and grow the Resilience capability in people. Solution Focused work is a kind of Resilience mapping. Utilizing the past difficulties and challenges and viewing them as resources, becomes a pathway to building a more hopeful and desired present and future state. We want people, teams, organisations to shine. To bloom into their full potential.

/ A simple road trip inspired me.

Dave and I have been on a road trip through the Southern United States over the past few weeks, and it’s been a refreshing shift from our usual rhythm. Stepping away from the everyday has allowed us to slow down, soak in new landscapes, and reconnect with what truly matters. There’s something deeply rejuvenating about life on the road—wide open skies, unexpected conversations, and those gentle reminders that life is, indeed, good.

We're here in the U.S. to celebrate the arrival of our precious grandson, Andreas, and to spend time with our beloved daughter and son-in-law. The joy they bring us is immeasurable.

We’ll be here for a few more weeks, grateful for the renewal this journey has offered.

/ REFLECTIONS ON RESILIENCE

I had an interesting conversation with a friend recently. He shared some challenges about his work and how difficult it had been with his load of responsibilities. He reflected that he couldn’t really complain because he was living the life he really hoped for now. He had dreamed, planned and worked really hard to build his business and was doing what he had always wanted to do. He further reflected that at times he wanted to tap out but realized he had developed the stamina and determination to carry on. We talked about the ‘sparkling moments'' and what he had discovered about his resilience and ability to ‘bounce back.’

Resilience is that - the ability to bounce back. And it is about the accumulative learning during those challenging times. I am an admirer of Dr. Becky Kennedy, psychologist and professor at Duke University. She describes this as the “learning space” - the ups and downs, the frustration you experience during the challenge of learning something new or going through a rough patch.

Building resilience isn’t pretty. It’s messy, hard, and it relies on learning how to tolerate frustration. Frustration tolerance is one of life’s most essential skills. The more we can tolerate frustration, the more we can learn, the more we can struggle, the more we can take on challenges, the more we can bounce back from failure. (Dr. Becky Kennedy)

This fits exceptionally well in our work as Solution Focused Practitioners. SF Practice is a “Resilience Model” and our elegant questions help to surface the meaning and important learning in the hard spaces.

/The Power of Solution Focused Group Supervision

Solution-Focused group supervision offers a powerful and inspiring space for therapists to reflect, learn, and grow together. Rooted in a strengths-based approach, it fosters a supportive and energizing environment where participants gain fresh perspectives, celebrate successes, and discover practical solutions to challenges. The collaborative nature of the group enhances professional development, reduces isolation, and helps prevent burnout by reinforcing what works rather than dwelling on problems. Through constructive dialogue and shared wisdom, therapists leave feeling more confident, motivated, and equipped with new strategies to support their clients effectively. The groups will balance each professional’s individual needs to share cases or other workplace challenges, alongside themes useful to the group as a whole.

Dates

Groups start in July 2025, running for 6 monthly sessions of 1.5 hours via zoom. Each group will have the option to continue meeting as a group after the 6 months are over.

The Importance of REST: 7 Key areas

Have you ever tried to fix an ongoing lack of energy by getting more sleep — only to do so and still feel exhausted?

Sleep and rest are not the same thing

We go through life thinking we’ve rested because we have gotten enough sleep — but in reality we are missing out on the other types of rest we desperately need. The result is a culture of high-achieving, high-producing, chronically tired and chronically burned-out individuals. We’re suffering from a rest deficit because we don’t understand the true power of rest.

Rest should equal restoration in seven key areas of your life.

The first type of rest we need is physical rest, which can be passive or active. Passive physical rest includes sleeping and napping, while active physical rest means restorative activities such as yoga, stretching and massage therapy that help improve the body’s circulation and flexibility.

The second type of rest is mental rest. Do you know that coworker who starts work every day with a huge cup of coffee? He’s often irritable and forgetful, and he has a difficult time concentrating on his work. When he lies down at night to sleep, he frequently struggles to turn off his brain as conversations from the day fill his thoughts. And despite sleeping seven to eight hours, he wakes up feeling as if he never went to bed. He has a mental rest deficit.

You don’t have to quit your job or go on vacation to fix this. Schedule short breaks to occur every two hours throughout your workday; these breaks can remind you to slow down. You might also keep a notepad by the bed to jot down any nagging thoughts that would keep you awake.

The third type of rest we need is sensory rest. Bright lights, computer screens, background noise and multiple conversations — whether they’re in an office or on Zoom calls — can cause our senses to feel overwhelmed. This can be countered by doing something as simple as closing your eyes for a minute in the middle of the day, as well as by intentionally unplugging from electronics at the end of every day. Intentional moments of sensory deprivation can begin to undo the damage inflicted by the over-stimulating world.

The fourth type of rest is creative rest. This type of rest is especially important for anyone who must solve problems or brainstorm new ideas. Creative rest reawakens the awe and wonder inside each of us. Do you recall the first time you saw the Grand Canyon, the ocean or a waterfall? Allowing yourself to take in the beauty of the outdoors — even if it’s at a local park or in your backyard — provides you with creative rest.

But creative rest isn’t simply about appreciating nature; it also includes enjoying the arts. Turn your workspace into a place of inspiration by displaying images of places you love and works of art that speak to you. You can’t spend 40 hours a week staring at blank or jumbled surroundings and expect to feel passionate about anything, much less come up with innovative ideas.

Now let’s take a look at another individual — the friend whom everyone thinks is the nicest person they’ve ever met. It’s the person everyone depends on, the one you’d call if you needed a favor because even if they don’t want to do it, you know they’ll give you a reluctant “yes” rather than a truthful “no”. But when this person is alone, they feel unappreciated and like others are taking advantage of them.

This person requires emotional rest, which means having the time and space to freely express your feelings and cut back on people pleasing. Emotional rest also requires the courage to be authentic. An emotionally rested person can answer the question “How are you today?” with a truthful “I’m not okay” — and then go on to share some hard things that otherwise go unsaid.

If you’re in need of emotional rest, you probably have a social rest deficit too. This occurs when we fail to differentiate between those relationships that revive us from those relationships that exhaust us. To experience more social rest, surround yourself with positive and supportive people. Even if your interactions have to occur virtually, you can choose to engage more fully in them by turning on your camera and focusing on who you’re speaking to.

The final type of rest is spiritual rest, which is the ability to connect beyond the physical and mental and feel a deep sense of belonging, love, acceptance and purpose. To receive this, engage in something greater than yourself and add prayer, meditation or community involvement to your daily routine.

As you can see, sleep alone can’t restore us to the point we feel rested. So it’s time for us to begin focusing on getting the right type of rest we need.

/ Special Focus: Solution Focused Group Supervision for Professional Mental Health workers

On the theme of “Rest”, I find supervision is one way I experience professional rest. It’s a place I can unwind and offload with someone I trust and feel revived afterwards. My supervisor also challenges me to do things I find very difficult and they help nudge me in a direction I want to develop. There are times when I feel discouraged or struggling with something. In a group format, there are advantages as you hear from the collective wisdom and perspective of others.
