The delegation of Senegal would like to state that a nation cannot rise when half it’s population is left behind in the classroom. Female access to education in Senegal is a much more sensitive issue than it is considered to be, because after all, how is the country supposed to progress when the other half of their youth is left uneducated?

Senegal has a predominantly young population. Therefore, faces a strong demand for education and healthcare, particularly sexual and reproductive health and the upholding of the rights of children, particularly girls. Even though Senegal has achieved greater equity at the elementary and middle levels, statistics show that the enrolment numbers of girls decrease significantly as they advance in grades. For example, in primary school, girls’ GER stood at 87.58% vs 34.60% in secondary school, therefore access to school for girls has not been translated into retention and completion at the secondary school level.

The situation in Senegal needs to be handled by cooperating with the public. Some barriers are:

• Poverty. About 39% Senegalese live under the poverty line which causes financial hardships and prevents children from attending school.

• Deep-seated cultural beliefs and practices – such as female genital mutilation, forced child marriages and early pregnancies are few of the leading causes for which female students are forced to drop out of school for.

• I would like to also like to note that the legal age of marriage for women in Senegal is 16 years and statistics say most of the girls get married before they turn 18.

Over 90% of the Senegalese consider access to higher education and equal rights for women important for the country’s future and believe it to be vital for the country’s development. So here are some measures being taken to improve this gap in education and literacy rates between men and women:

• Adult and Non-Formal Education: Operating specialized functional literacy centers and second-chance programs targeted primarily at women and out-of-school youths, these programs use regional languages rather than French to allow for a more flexible and inclusive curriculum.

• Budget Allocations: Directing a large share of public spending toward educational infrastructure, teacher salaries, and gender equality initiatives.

• PAQUET in Senegal stands for the Program for Improvements to Quality, Equity and Transparency in Education. It is Senegal’s core long-term strategic policy framework and sector plan for national educational development.

Other solutions to support female access to education must be thought of with regards to the public opinion and beliefs.

(okay lmfao what i actually said in my audition was not the same thing as this, i changed a few things and added some, removed some, all of that ykwim)

number 1,

i was thirteen/fourteen, i didn’t have instagram, but my friend did, let’s call her Tasha.

after a school event had happened Tasha posted a photo on her story, (which had me in it) without my permission and i didn’t know about it until i got a request on snapchat and she asked me to accept it

i asked her why, and rightfully so because i didn’t know who it was, so then Tasha tells me its her guy friend from grade 10 who thought i was nice-looking and so sent me a request on snapchat (my id he had gotten from Tasha).

what pissed me off here isn’t the fact that i had recieved a friend request from a guy i didn’t know just because he thought i was pretty, but the fact that Tasha had put my photo on her public story and given her friend my snapchat user id without my permission and tried to push me to accept it.

i am glad that even as a thirteen year old i still had a backbone and told her (while the guy was a few feet away from us) in a real loud voice that i wasn’t going to accept any requests and that she shouldn’t have used a photo of me without my consent.

number 2,

another friend whom we’ll be calling Sana,

she fed my photos to an ai WITHOUT my consent to make a fucking collage that can be made easily with even the photos app

i have made it clear to all my friends that i don’t like gen AI in general so i dumbly assumed that it was a given that i would never assent to feeding gen AI a photo of me

and then she makes another collage (by herself this time) and proudly says ‘see i didn’t use ai this time’

honestly?

fuck you Sana

these were just two experiences out of the many i have, most of them being from Sana (how much more fucking stupid can she be)

now the main point of this article is not me ranting about my anger-inducing experiences, its the plain and simple fact, that before you post someone on the internet, or post their real life details you should have the decency to ask for their permission.

posting on the internet for everyone in the world to see isn’t as sunshine and rainbows as people like Tasha and Sana think, it is so so dangerous and these people cannot even begin to grasp the depth of it.

consent isn’t something that should just be asked during an intimate moment of sorts, it is also a basic thing which all of us should know how to ask.

using and sharing someone’s identity, photograph, or personal details on the internet or just in general isn’t just unethical, it’s also very unsafe.

posting on social media is something almost all of us do, whether its influencers on instagram or writers and 2016 tumblr girls on substack.

however here are some risks that not a lot of people consider before they upload a photo of themselves and/or someone else:

• like i’ve said before, the internet is a risky place, so when you put out a photo for anyone to access, anyone can do anything with it.

• i’m not sure if you know but there are a LOT of nudify AIs, so your/your friend’s photo could be taken and used for something like this.

• AI is getting really good at generating human-like images and videos and hence anyone can use it to create deepfakes of you through what photos you’ve posted online.

• someone could be getting off to a photo of you or your friend for all you know.

now imagine any of this happening to you, not even because you decided to share a picture of yourself onto social media but because someone else did and you didn’t even know about it.

i once saw a reel of a woman who had blurred her face and had stated her reasons in the comment section, the reasons were quite similar to the ones i’ve stated here and some idiot replied to her comment saying “"i’m pretty sure you’re so ugly no one could get off to you” or something along the lines of that, and to that i would like to say that predators will predate and gooners will goon, someone conventionally pretty is exploited and so is someone who is considered conventionally ‘ugly’

i say all this from a place of concern, do not post or share anyone you know’s photo without asking their permission first.

racist, casteist slurs aren’t humorous and they aren’t to be used in a way to make them sound so,

i myself was a bit casteist and racist and probably still act so sometimes subconsciously (please call me out for it if you find me being so), because that’s how i grew up, with cousins talking shit about people who have reservations and ‘friends’ using castiest slurs, obviously i’m working on it more now, and freeing my vocabulary from derogatory words and reminding myself that this is not okay whenever i find myself laughing at an offensive joke, it’s taken some time and i would like to state that i have de-influenced myself quite a lot and am working towards being completely un-casteist and un-racist.

and no i am not using my old friends and weird relatives as an excuse for anything immoral i might have said or thought, but i feel like this is how most of us grew up/are growing up and hence it is important to count the fact that it is not completely the person’s fault, how they were raised plays an important role in how a person thinks and acts

these are the comedians young people watch and idolise

would their humor not be shaped by them?

i have heard kids make rape jokes, pedophilic jokes, and more and say “it’s just dark humor!”

because for them, its easier to say “oh its dark humor, you won’t get it, you take everything too seriously” than to admit that their words are iniquitous and ridiculous and influenced by some propaganda to demean people’s woes, so yes, i do take everything too seriously.

if for example, person A is making jokes about something they’ve actually been through then that is something understandable because it might be their coping method/mechanism (till some extent, because you can’t always just go around on the internet spouting stuff that could trigger anyone else), but for someone who hasn’t been through the trauma they’re joking about? its just unethical.

the biggest problem here?

media and mentalities.

we are made to think that it is cool to say such things by the media, that this is how you fit in with the crowd,

oh look those celebrities who are being puppeteered by their company said this/that, they are so cool i want to be like them!

that is how we start adopting such mannerisms and such a way of thinking, and no one tells us it’s wrong, no, they encourage it, especially with boys, the adults enable this to happen and then later wonder where they went wrong
