I’ve shared the gifting unboxing & reviews on my IG stories.

Earlier this month, many publicists & brands responded in participating in gifting at the Organization (thank you!!). I carefully made sure that these products were first aligned and that there was no conflict of interest among them. Then I provided very specific shipping instructions. Very specific.

And to share the tracking number with me PRONTO.

I received boxes from brands that DID NOT follow shipping guidelines, tracking numbers not shared on deadline, some brands didn’t even put a person’s name and other simply choose not to following labeling instructions. This made it extremely difficult and very time consuming when picking up packages from FedEx and could have actually resulted in the products NOT being picked up altogether.

Why is this important?

When products are shipped to FedEx or other mail service holding outlets, the person picking up has to not only have the tracking numbers, but their IDs, and ready for it - has to pay to retrieve EACH package. We paid nearly $5K to get all of our packages. If the shipment is NOT labeled correctly, it can easily be missed but also, the person retrieving CANNOT take from the office. Many of these products came from fulfillment warehouses which made it even harder since the brand's name was not on the boxes to help us verify.

I know that this isn’t the publicists fault but I do feel it is important for us publicists to really help our clients, these brands navigate the best way to participate in future gifting opportunities and to see the best ROI.

Gifting Do’s & Don’ts

DO - Physical Full-Sized Products ONLY
DON’T - Literature, gift cards - these tend to get overlooked and even if the offer is to redeem a complimentary item, it doesn’t perform well.
DO - Consult with your client on the best items that are IG worthy & giftable.
DON’T - Keep price tags or store inventory stickers on products - this looks very tacky.
DO - Communicate the importance of following shipping instructions & deadlines.
DO - Encourage your clients to include QR codes, social media tagging options ON the product.

WTF Moment of the Week

I recently reached out to an AHHHMAZING wellness brand that I personally met with earlier this Summer, and asked if they were looking for PR. The owner, said “yes” so we set up a call and within say ten minutes of the call he bluntly says “just so you know, I do not have a budget for PR“. So, in my mind I am thinking 'dude, why the hell did you even think of booking this call?!’ He wanted us to do commission based off products sold, yes you read that right. I explained to him, WE. ARE. NOT. YOUR. SALES. TEAM. Why do brands think this? How would you politely explain this to someone if they mentioned the same ask?

In one of our PR groups, a member had posted anonymously looking for someone to join their PR team for the upcoming NYFW events this September. Since this is my neck of the woods, I applied and had a really great interview. I completed a background check and received an offer letter. The production company wanted me to start working like today to only be paid, ready for this, $2,000 TOTAL on September 30. No, you did not read that wrong. They wanted me to work nearly 2.5 months, for less than minimum wage, and to only be paid AFTER fashion week. Bye, Felicia.

In many Facebook groups (for Czars) I see a lot of people asking:

• ”how do I find more clients”

Before I took on PR full-time and freelance writing, not to mention launching my swimwear brand, I actually use to produce fashion shows for New York Fashion Week and Miami Swim Week, along with smaller local productions in Miami Beach, FL and Charlotte, NC - I did this for ten, long years and what I found myself doing the most within the production is PR.
