I’ve been revising, but not consistently. I’ve also been going to the gym, traveling, caring for people I love, re-learning how to date, and accepting that writing doesn’t always get to come first, even when I wish it could.

So, I’ve had to sacrifice sleep to fit writing into my now very busy work schedule.

Much of my recent attention has gone to The Marsh Widow, my Southern Gothic retelling of Bluebeard. At its heart, it is a story about two women who carry opposite versions of the same wound.

Hollis is so desperate to be chosen that she is willing to self-erase to be loved, and Evangeline is so terrified of being abandoned that she tries to turn love into taxidermy.

The story has always contained mirrors, a forbidden room, a black key, and a decaying house beside the marsh. But during revisions and beta testing, I realized those were only the visible horrors.

The true horror is how easily attention can be mistaken for affection, how quickly we abandon ourselves to feel chosen, and how tempting it is to call a beautiful cage a home.

But outside of the manuscript, I’ve been thinking about the direction of where my life is heading. About the kind of woman I want to become, and how to reach my bigger goals without burnout and spiraling into imposter syndrome.

There are days when I feel certain I’m becoming the writer I want to be, followed by days when every sentence feels as though it has to be ripped from my brain and smeared onto paper like some last-minute sacrifice to whatever creative muse is threatening to abandon me near the approach of my looming deadline.

So, thank you all for remaining here while I was absent.

I didn’t stop writing. I was learning how to return to it without abandoning the rest of my life.

—Ashlynn

Subscribe now

The Rejected Chapter

Novel Beginnings: It Was Over Before It Started

Ashlynn Crow

Rejection as a writer and why I’m sharing the chapter with you anyway.

I thought this one had a real shot.

Not in the cute, “wouldn’t it be nice?” way. I mean, I genuinely believed I had written something that could stand in a room full of strong openings and hold its own.

The contest was Novel Beginnings, run by ProWritingAid. The premise was simple in the way good opportunities often are: submit the first 5,000 words of an unpublished novel-in-progress. Not a finished book. Not a full manuscript. Just the opening. It didn’t need to be polished. Just good enough to show voice, story, momentum, and have the potential to be something marketable.

The competition was open to unrepresented, unpublished fiction writers, with a grand prize of $50,000, an editorial consultation with First Ink, six months of mentorship, and a conditional offer of representation from Aevitas. Shortlisted writers would receive $5,000 and editorial feedback. (prowritingaid.com)

So yes.

I entered.

And yes.

I let myself hope.

The rules were tight. The entry had to be the opening of a fiction novel in progress, between 4,500 and 5,000 words, written in English, suitable for YA or adult fiction, unpublished, anonymous, properly formatted, without any author-identifying information.

That kind of container appealed to me.

There was no hiding behind a sprawling outline or a future promise of what the book might become. The first page had to do all the work. It had to make a reader lean in. It had to say, quickly and confidently: there is a story here, and you should care.

I submitted the first 4,888 words of my work-in-progress, Monster Hunter.

And today, I found out I didn’t even make the shortlist.

I’ll be honest—it stung.

Not because I thought I was owed anything. I wasn’t. Nobody is. Contests are subjective, brutal, and full of excellent writers you will never see. A no does not always mean the work was bad. It means this particular piece, in this particular room, with these particular readers, did not rise to the top.

Still, there is a specific little humiliation in believing something is strong and then having the world quietly decline to agree.

That is the part writers do not always admit. We talk about rejection as if it were a rite of passage after the fact. We make it tidy. We frame it as part of the journey, which it is, but before it becomes wisdom, it is usually just a punch to the ribs.

I wanted this one.

I wanted to read that congratulatory email encouraging me to keep going, that my writing matters, that I’m talented enough that others recognized it.

Instead, I got the other lesson.

The quieter one.

The less glamorous one.

The one every serious writer gets eventually: You do not get to outsource your belief in the work.

That is perhaps the most crucial, humbling, and freeing lesson a writer can learn. The longing for validation is human, but relying on it is a trap.

We must pivot from writing for validation to writing for the sake of the work itself.

The discipline is continuing after the answer is no.

The opening scenes had energy. You had a Pinterest board, a playlist, maybe even a character you were a little bit in love with. For a moment, the book felt alive.

Then somewhere in the middle, the whole thing started dragging its own corpse through the swamp.

The plot got blurry. The tension flattened. Every scene started to feel like people standing in rooms, talking about things that were more interesting five chapters ago.

This is the point where a lot of writers decide they are lazy, untalented, undisciplined, or secretly frauds.

Usually, that’s not the problem.

Usually, the problem is structural.

Not in a rigid, joyless, “paint by numbers” way. I don’t mean your story needs to become a spreadsheet with dialogue. I mean the middle of a novel collapses when the story stops changing.

That’s it. That’s the disease.

A strong middle is not just “more stuff happens.” It’s where pressure increases, relationships shift, information becomes costly, and the protagonist can no longer survive by being the same person they were in chapter one.

If your middle feels dead, here are the first things I look at.

1. Your protagonist wants something, but not badly enough

A vague goal creates vague scenes.

If your main character sort of wants something, or wants six things at once, or is mostly wandering through the plot reacting to other people’s decisions, the book will start to sag.

A story gets traction when the protagonist wants something concrete enough that the reader can measure progress and failure.

Not:

she wants happiness

he wants answers

they want to find themselves

Those can be part of the emotional spine, but they’re too abstract to drive scenes.

Try:

she needs to win back the estate before her cousin sells it

he must rescue his brother before the portal seals

they need to survive the tournament long enough to bargain for freedom

Test: Can you explain what your protagonist wants in one sentence, and can the reader tell by the end of each chapter whether they are closer or farther from getting it?

If not, the story will drift.

Fix: write your protagonist’s goal at the top of your draft document. Then ask of every scene:
Does this help them get it, fail to get it, or change what getting it costs?

If the answer is no, cut or combine the scene.

2. The stakes are present, but not escalating

Many drafts have stakes. Fewer drafts have escalating stakes.

That distinction matters.

If chapter three and chapter twelve feel equally dangerous, equally emotional, and equally costly, the middle will feel flat even if technically “things are happening.”

Pressure has to increase.

That can happen through:

external danger getting worse

emotional consequences deepening

time running out

allies becoming unreliable

the protagonist having to sacrifice something they actually care about

A scene should not just continue the story. It should make the story harder to survive.

Fix: make a short list of your current stakes, then ask:

what gets worse if my protagonist fails now?

what new cost appears halfway through the book?

what becomes irreversible?

Readers keep turning pages when they can feel the walls closing in.

3. You’re protecting your characters from hard choices

This one gets a lot of drafts in trouble.

Writers often make life hard for their characters, but still let them avoid the choice that would expose who they really are.

Disaster is not the same as conflict.

Conflict is choice under pressure.

A strong middle forces the protagonist to choose between two bad options:

loyalty or survival

love or power

truth or safety

revenge or mercy

who they were or who they must become

If your characters mostly endure events instead of making painful decisions, the story starts feeling passive.

And passive stories feel longer than they are.

Fix: find the next three major scenes in your draft and ask:
What hard choice is being forced here?
If there isn’t one, add one.

Not every scene needs a life-altering moral crisis. But your major scenes should not let the character walk away unchanged.

4. Your scenes are doing one job when they should be doing three

Weak middles are often built from scenes that are too thin.

A scene that only delivers exposition will drag.
A scene that only shows romance banter will drag.
A scene that only moves people from one place to another will absolutely drag.

Your strongest scenes usually do at least three things at once:

advance plot

reveal character

increase tension

deepen a relationship

complicate the world

plant a later payoff

This is one of the fastest ways to make a book feel richer without bloating it.

For example, a good argument scene should not only reveal relationship tension. It should also force a decision, expose a wound, or create a new problem.

A seduction scene should not only be sexy. It should shift power, expose vulnerability, or make later betrayal hurt more.

A travel scene should not just move bodies. It should reveal the world, sharpen conflict, or set up danger.

Fix: pick one scene that feels dull and ask:

what is this scene currently doing?

what else could it do at the same time?

If it only has one purpose, it’s probably too weak in its current form.

5. You’re withholding the wrong things

Some writers are too generous too early. Others starve the reader.

Both can kill momentum.

The middle usually suffers when the writer mistakes confusion for intrigue. If the reader does not know enough to care, they won’t feel tension. They’ll just feel distance.

Mystery works when the reader knows enough to ask sharp questions.

They don’t need every answer. But they do need orientation:

what does the protagonist want?

what stands in their way?

what happens if they fail?

what emotional wound is making this harder?

If those basics are muddy, no amount of atmosphere will save the draft.

Fix: ask a brutal question:
Would a smart reader be confused here for the right reason or the wrong one?

Right reason: they are eager to learn more.
Wrong reason: they do not understand what the scene is doing.

Only one of those keeps people reading.

6. The middle has movement, but no turn

A good middle doesn’t just “continue.” It turns.

Something should happen around the midpoint that changes the shape of the story. A revelation. A betrayal. A failed plan. A kiss that ruins everything. A death. A choice that closes one door and opens a worse one.

The midpoint is where the book stops being the promise of the story and becomes the cost of the story.

Before the turn, the protagonist still believes they can survive this one way.
After the turn, that belief should be damaged or destroyed.

That shift creates momentum because the story starts tightening.

Fix: ask yourself:

what changes at the midpoint?

what can never go back to normal after that?

what lie stops working there?

If the answer is “not much,” the middle probably feels mushy because the story has not actually pivoted yet.

Here’s what I do when rescuing a dead middle

If your draft is currently sprawled on the floor and refusing to breathe, here’s the reset I’d recommend:

Step 1: Write the spine

In one sentence each, define:

what the protagonist wants

what stands in the way

what happens if they fail

what emotional weakness is making this harder

Step 2: Identify the midpoint turn

Write one sentence:
Halfway through the story, everything changes when…

If you can’t finish that sentence, you’ve found one of the problems.

Step 3: Check every scene for change

For each scene, ask:

what changes?

what decision is forced?

what new cost is introduced?

If nothing changes, the scene is probably dead weight.

Step 4: Escalate, don’t repeat

Make sure problems are evolving, not recycling in different outfits.

The second argument should not feel like the first argument with better lighting.
The second danger should not feel like the first danger with sharper teeth.

Step 5: Hurt them where it matters

Not randomly. Specifically.

Attack the thing your protagonist is most desperate to keep:

their illusion of control

the person they love

the identity they cling to

the future they thought they were fighting for

That’s where story starts to feel alive again.

A final thought for writers who are stuck

Sometimes you are not blocked.

Sometimes your draft is correctly signaling that something underneath it is weak.

That is not failure. That is useful information.

A messy middle does not mean you can’t write. It usually means the story is asking for a sharper desire, a crueler dilemma, or a more honest turn.

The good news is that structure is fixable.

And once the story starts changing again, momentum usually comes back fast.

The draft breathes the moment the character can’t go on being who they were.

That’s when the book gets interesting and cause your readers to miss trains, ignore texts, and promising themselves “one more chapter” at 1:13 in the morning.

And really, that’s the dream.

If you’re working on a draft right now, tell me where it’s fighting you: beginnings, middles, endings, structure, pacing, character, or all of the above. I read every reply, and I may turn one of those into a future post.

Subscribe now

Subscribe if you like craft talk, sharp emotional truths of a writer romanticizing her life, and the messy business of building books that actually leave a mark. On Hinge, he asked me out quickly. He was warm, flattering, and decisive in a way that can feel rare on dating apps. He lived in San Diego. I live much farther north, and from the beginning, I made sure to be honest about that.

I told him the distance and asked directly whether it would be a problem. He said no. More than that, he reassured me. He said I was worth driving for. He picked a restaurant near me, chose the time, and texted often enough that I let myself believe he was serious.

He sent selfies from work. Photos of his workstation. He asked about my writing. He told me he was excited to see me.

He even asked for my number in case the app failed because he “didn’t want to miss the chance to meet his future wife.”

You know. Casual.

The morning of the date, I checked in to make sure we were still on. He said yes. He told me he’d leave his house around 2 p.m. for our 3 p.m. date. He even asked if he could pick me up. I told him I’d drive myself this time, but if there were a second date, I’d happily take him up on that.

He was charming in that very modern way some men are. Just romantic enough to make you excited to meet in person. It felt easy. Promising. Our goals aligned. He was the right age. He was saying all the things a hopeful woman wants to hear.

Then, at 2:05, he canceled.

He said he hadn’t realized the drive from San Diego would be an hour and forty minutes, even though we had already discussed it, and that he wasn’t sure it could work if he had to drive that far to see me “every time.”

Every time.

We had not even had the first date.

That was the part that really got me. Not just that he canceled last minute, but that he skipped over the reality of meeting me and leapt straight into the imagined inconvenience of a future he had not earned.

He wanted the fantasy of me. He just didn’t want the drive.

I finally feel like I’m steering instead of reacting.

For a long time, my life moved fast. Flights, deadlines, new cities, new ideas. I hiked active volcanoes, got tattoos to conquer my fear of needles, and chased adventure wherever it showed up. I said yes to almost everything because momentum felt like progress.

But lately, things have gone quieter.

And in many ways, that feels braver.

I’m proud of the woman I’m becoming. I’m looking forward to the day I meet my husband, someone who can add to my happiness.

That’s why I booked professional photos for dating apps. The kind you take when you’re clear about what you want and no longer willing to make yourself smaller just to be chosen.

I haven’t even downloaded the apps yet. I’m waiting for the photos because I want to show up as the version of myself I’ve been building: feminine, steady, and sure of her standards.

Between the slower moments, I joined a nonprofit murder mystery theater production of Clue.

I’m playing Miss Scarlet, and strangely, it felt symbolic.

I didn’t audition. I didn’t try to convince anyone to pick me. I was simply chosen to play the woman in red. A character who is unapologetically feminine, dangerous, desired, and completely in control of the room.

After months of rebuilding myself—caring for my body, my confidence, and my standards—stepping into that role felt less like acting and more like recognition.

Like the version of me I’ve been growing into had finally caught up.

I’m seeing alignment in every aspect of my life, especially in the stories I’m writing. I’m working on several projects at the moment, and all of them feature:

Women reclaiming their power.
Women setting boundaries.
Women walking away from what diminishes them.
Women choosing devotion, sovereignty, and safety on their own terms.

It isn’t a coincidence.

It’s a through-line.

I was also invited to contribute to an anthology featuring gothic fairy-tale retellings. I chose Bluebeard.

I’m writing a Southern Gothic version called The Marsh Widow. It focuses on bayou rot, sinking houses, mirrors, secrets, and a girl who learns to choose herself instead of disappearing into someone else’s expectations.

It’s eerie, intimate, and a little dangerous.

And it feels very close to home.

Even though this season looks slow from the outside, my days are full. I joined a gym. I volunteer at my nephews’ baseball practices. I’m flying to Guatemala over Valentine’s Day weekend to rest, think, and draft without distraction.

Space has become one of the most intentional choices I make. Every day I’m up at 4 am, I complete my self-care routine, and I write.

If this season has taught me anything, it’s this: You don’t have to blow up your life to change it. Sometimes you just start choosing differently.

You choose who gets access to you.
You choose the work that lights you up.
You choose the stories you want to tell.
You choose the kind of love you’re willing to wait for.

And slowly, quietly, everything shifts.

This is me shifting.

If you’re doing the same, you’re not alone.

I’ll be sharing more privately this week about the deeper lessons this season has taught me—about standards, desire, and the difference between romanticizing the writer life and actually building one.

— Ashlynn
<p class="button-wrapper" data-attrs="{"url":"https://ashlynncrow.substack.com/subscribe?","text":"Subscribe didn’t plan to write this.

It came together the way most honest realizations do—slowly, in pieces, after the noise finally quieted enough for me to hear myself again.

This past year took me across countries, through long stretches of solitude, and into versions of myself I hadn’t met before. Some of it was beautiful. Some of it was deeply uncomfortable. Most of it was necessary.

I wrote in cafés that didn’t speak my language.
I slept in borrowed apartments and unfamiliar cities.
But it was in Florence that I finally stopped trying to become someone worthy of being valued—and started valuing myself instead.

Italy changed me for the better. Not because of the scenery, but because I began listening to myself. Because I started honoring my needs instead of shrinking them to make others more comfortable.

For a long time, I gave more than I had.
I stayed in places, relationships, and routines that asked for everything and offered very little back. I told myself that was loyalty. That was love. That was commitment.

Italy changed that.

Being there, far from everything familiar, forced me to confront what I was tolerating. I stopped overextending. I stopped chasing connection where there was none. I started matching energy instead of draining myself to earn it.

And in that space, something unexpected happened.

I started choosing myself.

This year showed me what I want to build—and what I’m finally willing to leave behind.

I left Italy with a full heart and a quiet grief.
With friendships I miss deeply.
With a version of myself I’m proud of.
With stories I’m still writing my way through.

I’m back in California now, resting. Rebuilding. Letting myself imagine what comes next—a home, a partnership built on mutual choosing, books brought fully into the world. A life that feels rooted instead of reactive.

This space is where I’ll be untangling all of that.

If you’re here, reading this, I hope you find something familiar in these words. Something that reminds you it’s okay to outgrow people. That it’s okay to leave what no longer chooses you. That it’s okay to want more, and to go after it gently, on your own terms.

Let’s continue becoming.
— Ashlynn

P.S. If you’d like to read the letters and reflections that go deeper—the parts I only share with paid readers—you’re welcome to join me there.
<div In sacrifice. In quiet, simmering rage. But at its heart, it’s about reclamation.

Isolde doesn’t want to be saved.
She wants to be chosen—by hands that won’t try to break her, by hearts that won’t flinch at the cost of loving all of her. And if she has to set the world on fire to rule on her own terms, she’ll do it without hesitation.

Here’s a line I’ve been holding onto:

“I don’t need their love,” she said, adjusting the crown like armor. “I need their fear. Love wavers. Fear kneels.”

If you’re drawn to stories that are moody, ruthless, romantic, and sharp-toothed—stay close. I’ll be sharing more soon.

— Ashlynn

<a class="image-link image2" target="_blank" creative doubt, and learning to show up even when you don’t feel ready. Thinking it through in half-formed sentences. Rehearsing it between coffee sips and moments of self-doubt.

So I’m here now.
Not because I feel ready—but because I don’t want silence to become a habit.

There’s a particular kind of fear that comes with showing up honestly.

Not fear of the blank page, exactly, but of what you might discover once you start filling it. The fear that you’re not good enough. That you never were. That someone else has already said it better. That your words will be judged, dismissed, or worse—met with indifference.

I think I’ve been most afraid that my softness makes me unremarkable. That what I have to say isn’t sharp enough, deep enough, or important enough to take up space. That lie has kept me quiet more times than I can count.

For a long time, I believed I needed to arrive fully formed before I could speak. That I had to be healed, confident, consistent—someone I didn’t quite recognize yet.

But I’m learning something different now.

That consistency doesn’t have to look like performance.
That vulnerability isn’t weakness—it’s creative oxygen.
And those unfinished thoughts, offered honestly, can still become a connection.

So this is me showing up without certainty. Writing through the doubt instead of waiting for it to disappear. Choosing presence over perfection.

This space might not always be tidy.
But I want it to be real.

I’m here to write, to reconnect with myself, and to remember why I started in the first place. If you’re reading this, thank you for being here and for witnessing the in-between.

You’re welcome to stay as long as it resonates.

— Ashlynn
<div
