5 Things to Know About the March 3rd Lunar Eclipse

(1) What Is a Lunar Eclipse Again?

A Lunar Eclipse is technically a Full Moon. From a chart perspective, a Full Moon is an opposition between the transiting Moon and the transiting Sun.

An eclipse occurs when that opposition happens close to the transiting nodal axis (aka the North and South Nodes, which, by definition and concept, are always opposite each other).

Think about Lunar Cycles like Oreo cookies.

The Sun is the cookie, the Moon is the cream, and the Oreo is the human experience. It’s the deep, inner-felt self + the conscious ego, the question + the answer, the intention + the receipt of the results of that intention, and the breath in + the breath out.

You can’t really make sense of any of those pairs—or the Oreo itself—by only thinking about one side. The lunar cycle is a way of pulling the component parts of the Oreo apart and then putting them back together.

As the Sun and Moon transit signs (we have Full and New Moons every month), it’s like a different way of examining the cookie. You’re still pulling it apart and bringing it back together, but maybe this time you do it with a side of milk—a metaphor for the sign it’s in. Or maybe you decide to see what it’s like when the Oreos are frozen or fried.

Maybe you don’t have control over the fact that this month’s Oreo is the “Birthday Cake” edition. What you do have control over is what you want to add or subtract to make it the most authentic Oreo it can be. Perhaps the frozen Oreo needs to have slimmer cookies to work.

You can’t really appreciate that until you pull it apart. This is like the Full Moon—where Sun and Moon are opposite, you feel tension and you feel something spilling over. Something is reaching a culmination or climax. You’re seeing things you haven’t seen before, and now you have to let something go.

The New Moon is where you take those slimmed-down cookies, smack ‘em back together, and walk into the Nabisco home office with the confidence of Timothée Chalamet, exclaiming, “Behold! The best Oreo ever made!”

Okay, maybe not totally. But the New Moon is when the Sun and Moon are moving together. Momentum is on your side to initiate something new. You might be a bit blind to the details, but we all need to be a little blind to start anything without perfect knowledge of what the future brings.

(2) Eclipses Are “Special” New/Full Moons

When New or Full Moons occur as eclipses, the stakes are higher. It’s like your dearest friend is getting married and asked you to make an Oreo-themed dessert. Suddenly, the entire weight of the wedding feels like it rests on your ability to deliver.

Honestly, this Oreo metaphor probably needs to be taken out behind the shed, Of Mice and Men style—but hopefully you get the idea.

An eclipse concentrates, multiplies, and adds gravity to a monthly lunation. It makes the themes that come to a head—and specifically how they are met by our human agency—take on a much larger long-term importance. These implications and opportunities extend well beyond the month.

It’s not one-directional, either. Sometimes it’s the long-term themes and the choices we’ve barely thought about that finally concentrate, revealing something acute that has been slowly building. In a weird way, eclipses are “trigger-pull” moments. They are both the moment something is set in motion to be revealed later, and the moment we are hit by the projectile of a previous trigger-pull.

(3) Eclipses Won’t Affect Everyone Equally

I don’t spend a lot of time trying to translate astrological phenomena into empirical justifications—it’s complicated and not always intuitive—but one of the easiest places to find evidence is the effect of Full Moons. There are noted increases in police activity, as well as increased libido and aggression in animal populations on Full Moons.

So, maybe you’re a little extra spicy or maybe you get lucky, but you might look back and shrug because it didn’t feel that out of the ordinary.

This eclipse will affect folks with major Pisces and Virgo placements the most.

Descending in “order” of importance, next would be the other mutable signs: Sagittarius and Gemini.

For everyone else, look to the house where the eclipse will activate, which I cover in the Horoscopes section.

Pisces and Virgo are the Main Characters of this Eclipse

(4) What is this Eclipse All About?

We are closer to the end than we are to the beginning of the Virgo/Pisces eclipse cycle that started in September 2024 (Specifically, the this cycle began with the Pisces Full Moon, Lunar Eclipse on September 17th, 2024 at 25°47’ of Pisces).

With the tension between Virgo and Pisces, there’s a big theme around integration vs. transcendence—managing how we respond to what we can’t know for sure and what we can’t fully control.

Like many things in life (and in astro), it comes down to how the questions are framed:

1. Doesn’t life ultimately come down to the accumulation of small, repeatable actions? Or;

2. On the other hand, isn’t life far too short to constantly “sweat the small stuff”?

If the Full Moon is the moment of finally biting that Oreo—appraising what it is and then having to pull it apart to return to the drawing board—this Full Moon in proximity to the Virgo South Node shows us exactly where we’re hitting a wall.

The South Node pushes us to move away from “Virgo-type” solutions in favor of Piscean ones. We might be hitting that wall because we’re trying to solve an unsolvable problem or control an uncontrollable thing. Or, more realistically, we are approaching problems in ways that—so long as we continue to force them—make them feel unsolvable.

They might not be.

And perhaps “solving” them might not be the right approach. Perhaps by focusing so much on the “unsolvability,” we are actually creating new problems or limiting ourselves. It’s not necessarily that we’re focusing on the wrong problems, but that we’re framing them through the wrong questions.

The Eclipse Goes Exact at 6:34 AM (NYC time) at 12°51’ of Virgo

Our ability to take action is bound by the tools, knowledge, and awareness cultivated and curated from the raw material and messy chaos of our accumulated lived experience? This is what it means to be human. The way in which we assemble—not just an intelligence or a collection of rote memorization, but the big-picture approach, almost like a giant phenomenal mosaic that combines all types of intelligence, intentionality, practicality, and commitment—is the most powerful tool we all wield.

This is very much associated with the energy, themes, and archetypes of Virgo.

On the other hand, sometimes what’s most needed lies beyond either awareness of or the capacity to integrate it. Sometimes we have to deliberately suspend our worldly experiential and perceptual limits and dip deep from the well of the ineffable—the things that come from an inexplicable “higher order” knowing, from the spiritual and unconscious realms of life, and from the biggest (and sometimes most unsettling) things we can wrap our brains around. But we can only do that if we’re willing to accept that we might not be able to fully understand, conceptualize, or describe it.

That’s the essence of Pisces. And so this Eclipse is an opportunity to pull those two sides apart and, specifically, to lean into the ineffable—or to release, even temporarily, the rationally imposed limits that structurally ignore, devalue, or fail to see what might be there.

(5) How Does This Relate to the Broader Cultural Moment?

I tend to write less about “mundane astrology”—geopolitics, leaders, and war. I’ve always been more interested in astrology from a psychological and personal growth perspective. Having said that, there is inevitable overlap when the individual experience exists within a broader collective zeitgeist.

And there are many, many things that have emerged into public consciousness that are—both slowly and quickly—creating a certain obsessiveness with analyzing, truth-finding, answer-mining, and the positioning of those findings.

For example:

• The Rise of AI: The sense of overwhelm created by claims that your job will be replaced by a robot next week. Even if inaccurate, the consequences feel high, and the imperfect information makes it difficult to assess the threat.

• Information Overload: We are being waterboarded by dis- and misinformation. The cognitive effort required to evaluate any piece of info is unsustainable, and our sense of control is challenged when we see others failing their own assessments.

• The Degradation of Trust in Medical Institutions: Cancer rates are rising while insurance refuses to pay for early screenings. This forces us into unhelpful extremes: either destructive obsessiveness about health or sheer analysis exhaustion that leads to ignoring the risks entirely.

• Addictive Media Use: The over-stimulation of the brain exhausts our problem-solving capabilities for things that actually matter.

• Economic Uncertainty: The “Tech Golden Era” is arguably over. Large layoffs at previously “prestige” firms and a wild west of predictions have created a sense of shifting ground.

• War: While war is typically ruled by Mars or Pluto, what I'm getting at is how the lack of day-to-day control over global conflict adds to the heavy, psychic weight of this moment.

Now look, this doesn't all have to be dark, sad, and ominous. I’m just pointing out a few mundane, real-world examples where rational, purely intellectual analysis might not be the medicine this moment requires.

Good things come from moving away from obsessive over-analysis:

• A sense of collective shared experience from large-scale change.

• The forced practice of trust and awareness of what we can and cannot control.

• The rise of nuanced worldviews that escape false dichotomies.

• A re-appreciation for the magic of the creative “flow-state” that can’t be replicated by AI.

• Compassionate, sustainable self-care versus obsessive “optimization.”

• Seeing beyond manufactured extremism.

This doesn’t mean abandoning our tools or thinking good things will just fall into our laps. It means abandoning the idea that obsessive analysis is the only approach. It’s about incorporating trust, softness, and flow into the invisible collective current we all co-create.

Aries Rising

Aries, I’ll get this out of the way at the outset: this is going to be a powerful next couple of years for you. You will leave this period hardened with muscle—metaphorical or otherwise—that you can’t buy, steal, or cheat into acquiring overnight. It is earned through a forced patience and a gauntlet of new restrictions. Though these might feel unbearable to your existential need to move spontaneously, they will be a forcing function for developing parts of your life that are usually impossible to develop.

The main lesson is also the first lesson: patience. This is especially true now with four planets moving through your 12th house. As we move toward the final weeks of winter, you might be especially feeling the burnout, seasonal gloom, and reduced energy that often accompanies those last days before spring emerges. This doesn’t mean you should pop medical-grade tranquilizers so you can move into your basement and hibernate like a bear for four straight weeks. But, if you find yourself a bit more foggy, a bit more sleepy, or lacking the energy to move and be intentional—traits you are so used to—you’re going to have to let yourself be okay with that. It might take some practice.

This Eclipse is a nudge and an opportunity to realize the gifts of quiet reflection. These gifts come when you don’t try to engineer solutions to your tiredness or see it as a defeat or an indictment of your long-term health. (Of course, if legitimate medical issues arise, don’t ignore them or take this to mean they shouldn’t be taken seriously).

For you, the eclipse is significant because it sets the stage for the growth phase I mentioned earlier. It is one of several poignant moments across a three-year cycle that forces you to take the answers in your unconscious seriously. You are being asked to acknowledge the validity of the spirituality, wisdom, and insight that exists beyond the tangible world—and the impact that unexamined patterns can wield in your life.

You’re being challenged to accept that even if you work hard enough or perfect your day-to-day protocol skillfully enough, you cannot bypass the things you choose not to see. This moment informs a period where you need to build a different structure in your way of “being.” When actions that worked before aren’t as effective, you are forced to change your approach. You have to put the hammer down for a bit if you’re going to discover how to use it better.

Taurus Rising

It’s not helpful—nor is it really your style—to spend time litigating what led up to this moment. But you do find yourself in a position where you’re having to face challenges that are hard to grasp, hard to see, and hard to articulate, even though you know they are there. Don’t take this as “life sucks right now and there’s nothing you can do about it.” Take it as a recognition that you’ve made decisions about what you want your future to look like, and those decisions came with certain sacrifices. Now is a time when you’re having to appreciate those—or rather, when you’re forced to go about life with the constant feeling of those sacrifices humming in the background like ankle weights.

Don’t despair, because there will be powerful growth and deep life shifts that occur over the next two or three years. But you’re not going to make it out if you ignore what the living out of those sacrifices also stirs up. You are facing feelings, realizations about certain patterns, and the forced facing of things you’d prefer to ignore—things that don’t have good colloquial or public capital. These are things not everyone might relate to or be able to understand if you attempt to articulate them. This means they aren’t easy, there are no playbooks, and there might be times when you have to be willing to embrace the jagged growth of facing something that can feel very isolating.

Hey Everyone!

I am writing from Truckee, California, close to the more popular Lake Tahoe, for a long weekend of snowboarding.

Getting here required seven hours of travel across two flights with little margin for error. This took place two days after a lovely Mercury Retrograde stationing direct in Pisces and mere hours before transiting Mars in Aquarius makes an electric square to Uranus in Taurus.

In other words, all else being equal, it wouldn’t be high on any “most ideal times to fly” lists—but it’s a good example of not letting astrology run your life when it doesn’t need to.

Astrology to Be Aware Of

(1) Mercury Retrograde in Pisces

Mercury stationed direct on February 25th at 22 degrees Pisces. It will be retrograde until March 20th, when it stations direct at 8 degrees of Pisces.

(2) Saturn Conjunction Neptune

The exact conjunction on February 20th is over, but we’ll continue to see how this fundamental theme of form and formless shapes our experience in the coming months. I’ll chat more about this soon, but to be honest, I’ve already written so much about it that even I have Saturn conjunct Neptune burnout!

(3) Coming Soon — Lunar Eclipse Full Moon

(4) Lots of Pisces Energy + A Nice Cancer Moon + Mars Square Uranus

I’m a huge fan of Chris’s graphics, and this is a great one for visualizing the time-based effects of Mars Square Uranus.

This aspect goes direct TODAY, February 27th. Transit Mars in Aquarius square Uranus in Taurus feels like the psyche staging a jailbreak against the parts of your life that feel stagnant, feel like you have no control over, or have calcified into false security.

It’s the tension between the individual, willful mind that wants revolution and the deeper tectonic currents that keep us in motion. This motion often feels bigger than us, whether it is found in large routines that have become familiar or pressures that aren’t entirely ours—the dynamics of relationships, finances, or life events that toss us about.

When these planets meet, there can be a real feeling of psychological electricity. It is a voltage that can be used to direct motion, but it sometimes demands motion even when it’s better not to act. Sometimes big, surprising things happen that can’t be predicted. Sometimes we’re just feeling a little extra hum of anxiety.

Anytime we’re talking about Uranus, we’re talking about the archetype of awakening. To the extent that disruption or breakdown does come, try not to see it as a crisis that has to be miserable. First, try to avoid unnecessary crisis. But to the extent it comes, know that disruptive energy is sometimes necessary to shock us out of a comfort that has prevented us from evolving.

With Uranus in Taurus, themes of long-term relationships, finances, and values are all in play. And with the moon in Cancer, there’s a sentimental vibe in the air and a greater need for safety. With such a heavy Pisces signature, this might feel like a weird moment to navigate.

Details can be a little hazy. The heavy Pisces signature alongside this retrograde Mercury stokes our emotional brain. Details? I can’t be bothered with details! I want action!

Be mindful of that. And with that, I give you: 5 Things NOT TO DO TODAY.

5 Things NOT to Do Today

(1) Don’t Send $6,000 to help get a Prince in Africa out of Jail

Wow, that’s..uh..pretty specific, huh? I mean the general trope of internet scams that (though probably already peaking in an earlier internet age) still work by preying on emotions, lack of attention to detail, and urgency to act. Just, be a bit more skeptical of these types of things.

(2) Don’t Break up With Your Boyfriend or Girlfriend in the Heat of an Argument

There’s something about a Mars Square Uranus where we just want RESOLUTION! ACTION! It’s like an itch we need to scratch or a piece of last night’s dinner that needs to be flossed out, except we don’t know how to quite solve it! Fuck it, just remove all the teeth then!

This moment can be associated with raised emotional stakes and again, when we feel like we don’t have the tools, focus, proper hours of sleep, or clear mindedness—sometimes we take action that feels relieving in the moment, but we might end up regretting once the dust settles.

(3) Don’t Multitask While You’re Driving

Look, you should never be multitasking while you’re driving. But this is an especially bad day to be double fisting triple venti acai berry chocolate espresso surprises, while you’re responding to emails, no-handed, with your teeth and changing three lanes at once to hit your exit.

Anytime we’re talking about hard Mars and Uranus aspects, there’s always a possibility of accidents, mechanical breakdowns, and machinery or technology doing unexpected things. You can’t totally put life on hold and live in a straight jacket, but you should be extra alert, expect the unexpected, and do your best to be present in the moment.

(4) If You’re Going to Crash Out, Wear a Helmet

Please don’t take this to be some kind of self-deprecating celebration or even encouragement to “crash out,” as it were. However, this tends to be a moment, consistent with everything I’ve said above, where you just feel the FRUSTRATION that’s been slowly building up kind of boil over.

Like that stupid little piece of the dishwasher that keeps breaking off and you keep putting it back on and finally it falls off one too many times and you’re kind of head-achey or hungry or late or trying to box your cat off with another hand to keep him from licking the dirty dishes in the bottom tray and you just kinda crash out and you want to chuck that dishwasher piece across the room and go treat yourself to a burger and a margarita in a Chili’s at least 500 zip codes away.

It’s okay to be frustrated, it’s also okay to realize, okay—something is not working. Maybe I need a change. Maybe I need a break. Maybe I just need a different approach. But trying to force solutions or immediate actions into frustrated present moments can be a forcing of triangle pegs into square holes type activity that has the potential to further break things.

Hey Everyone!

The New Moon Solar Eclipse in Aquarius goes exact at 7:13 AM NYC time.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

• Eclipses are “special” Full or New moons which line up with the lunar nodes.

• The lunar nodes are not quite yet in Leo/Aquarius, so after tomorrow’s eclipse, we still have eclipses in the Pisces/Virgo axis, and the next Aquarius/Leo eclipse won’t be until February of 2027.

• Not everyone is going to “feel” the eclipse! This eclipse will be most significant for Aquarius, Leo, Scorpio, and Taurus (especially Aquarius) and especially for folks that have personal planets or chart points in Leo and Aquarius close to 28 - 29 degrees, the location of this eclipse.

• While some folks won’t notice much at all, for others this eclipse may quietly begin a realignment, the start of something meaningful that only reveals itself when you look back and realize, oh… that’s when it started.

On a basic level, a New Moon is a time when heart and mind, subconscious and ego want to work together. It marks the end of something, an exhale, at the same time setting up the starting of something, an inhale.

The Aquarius New Moon is an opportunity to rework your relationship with the larger collective world that you’re a part of. To let go of what you cannot control, to let go of trying to engineer a narrative, to let go of needing your particular truth to be everyone’s truth, and to integrate a certain amount of healthy detachment—particularly around needing to be understood or validated.

When a New Moon also creates a Solar eclipse, the themes are amplified—there’s a larger resonance with longer-term (in units of months and years) currents. It’s also not trivial that we’re not getting another Aquarius/Leo eclipse until about a year from now; this eclipse might turn out to be a bit of a “preview” of things to come more fully towards the end of this year and through 2027. Which, intuitively, makes sense: we’re still at the early stages of Pluto’s transit through Aquarius, and Jupiter will enter Leo in July.

Think about an Eclipse as inoculating a substrate with energetic spores. You might not notice anything immediately, but over time those spores might grow into something significant.

One of the main snags of writing about major astrological transits—at least for me—is that you can’t get too specific about how it might affect each individual reader.

There are 1,728 unique combinations of the “big 3” in astrology—and that’s not even including the degree positions of those planets/points, let alone the rest of the chart.

So when we talk about, say, February’s Saturn-Neptune Conjunction, we look at it through the lens of “what does this mean for the collective?” or how does this transit interact with important charts, like the chart of a country or a president. This is an oversimplification, but that’s the general idea.

As far as making it personal, the best we can do in “personal horoscopes” is interpret a current chart of planets by mapping them to certain house positions that would be specific to each Rising Sign. That’s why, generally speaking, you should (and most astrologers intend that you do) read horoscopes for your Rising Sign.

(1) Transits vs. Transit Aspects: Why the "Vibe" and the "Event" are Different Things

Transits simply refer to the movement of a planet through the zodiac. If you’re an Aries Rising, we know that Neptune will be transiting through your 1st Whole Sign House until… checks notes …March 2039!

There are things we can say about what that entire period might feel like. But the experiential anchor points, the moments that actually get drilled into your conscious awareness and later become your memory of the transit, tend to be when transiting planets make exact aspects to points in your natal chart. This is especially true when they aspect the personal planets: the Sun, Moon, Venus, Mercury, & Mars.

Think of it like attending a five-day destination wedding where the overall experience was shocking, disruptive, and massively awkward. The vibe was strange the whole time, sure. But the moments everyone remembers are when (1) the bride’s college ex-boyfriend showed up, (2) got drunk, and (3) punched a waiter he thought was the groom.

Maybe the energy around the event already felt off in a way you couldn’t fully explain. But when those moments happened, they anchored an explicit awareness: ah, okay, it wasn’t just a weird feeling. These become the scenes you can’t ignore and the stories you tell later when you think back on the experience. Transits work similarly.

And transits don’t always speak through external events. Sometimes the experience is internal. You suddenly realize you really need to move cities. Sometimes it’s external. You receive an email from your landlord saying the building is being condemned due to a parakeet infestation and you have sixty days to leave.

And sometimes it’s both: you were already thinking about moving, then the landlord email arrives, and while you technically don’t have to relocate your city too, the moment becomes the nudge that turns contemplation into decision.

It’s also worth remembering that depending on the sign and house a planet is moving through, a long transit might make several major aspects to your natal chart, or only brush it once or twice. A multi-year transit could contain five defining moments, or just one quieter turning point.

So while something like a Saturn–Neptune conjunction might be the talk of the astrological town, it may not feel especially personal in your lived experience beyond your participation in the broader collective atmosphere. For others, it might end up being one of the most impactful of their life.

(2) Does an Un-aspected Transiting Planet Actually Do Anything?

There’s a common trope that a lawyer’s favorite answer to any question is “it depends,” and I think it’s equally relevant to astrologers.

Short answer: Yes, but perhaps less so. Mainly, it depends.

On the house.

On the planet.

And, of course, what does “not making many aspects” actually mean in context?

This question tends to come up, or at least get discussed most often, in the context of the slower-moving planets (also referred to as generational or transpersonal planets)

Say Uranus is moving through a house, where it will spend ~eight years, but doesn’t make a major aspect to a personal planet.

Even an unaspected generational planet still says something about you or your current experience. We all come to understand ourselves and our place in the world within collective moments, moments which, compared to “personal moments,” are associated with the transpersonal planets.

The nuances of those collective moments, and the way they get integrated into our lives through social norms, upbringing, or the range of options presented to us, are often highly unique and deeply significant.

Having said that, when transpersonal planets move through a particular area of the chart without forming major aspects, we are likely to be less conscious of the process than we might otherwise be when key natal points are directly triggered.

But this is just one example.

Which brings me to…

(3) The Gravity Scale: Why Some Transits Change Your Life and Others Just Change Your Day

Not all transit aspects are created equal.

The Moon transits around the zodiac every month. Pluto transits around the zodiac approximately every 248 years.

A lunar transit aspect is only going to last hours, versus a Pluto transit aspect that might “last” for several years.

The catch-22 is that a slow-moving planet like Pluto is hard to “see” in one frame. It’s too big to package into the normal containers of day-to-day conscious awareness and observation.

A general way to think about categorizing transits:

The most “life-changing” personal transits will be the transits of:

• Pluto

• Neptune

• Uranus

• Saturn

• Jupiter

In aspect to your natal:

• Moon

• Sun

• Mercury

• Venus

• Mars

Generally, the slower the transiting planet, the more “massive” or tectonic its influence.

And the more personal the aspected natal planet, the more the associated themes, changes, and influences will be both deeply personal and highly influential on our conscious experience of life.

Now consider a transit of the faster-moving, second list of planets aspecting the first list. Does transiting Uranus square natal Sun Mercury the same “effect” or “theme” as transiting Mercury square natal Uranus?

While the themes of the planets coming together are the same, and the aspect type is the same, the gravity of these transits is vastly different, and I hope this makes the “why” more intuitive.

A transiting Uranus square natal Mercury could activate natal Mercury for many months, forcing a fundamental shift in how someone sees a situation, or revealing a truth that creates a major perspective change.

A transiting Mercury square natal Uranus (with Mercury spending less than a day in each degree and a little less than a month in a given sign) might instead describe a surprising moment in a single day, or a spike of nervous tension or mental restlessness.

When a boulder meets a grape, it matters whether the grape is being dropped on the boulder or the boulder is being dropped on the grape.

Now, it depends on each person’s individual birth chart when and how many times, if at all, they will experience these personal aspects.

Many people will never, for example, experience Pluto conjunct a personal planet, which would be a significant life moment. Others will experience Pluto conjuncting multiple personal planets, and for some people, perhaps all at once if they have a stellium of conjunct planets.

On the other hand, everyone beyond the age of ~30 will experience Saturn aspecting every personal planet, and in multiple aspect types.

PART II: ANSWERS TO COMMON QUESTIONS

(4) What About Transits A Planet Makes To Itself?

Absolutely, those matter too, again, especially the transits of the slower-moving planets.

The most common example of the fast-moving kind is the transit of the Sun. When the Sun completes a full cycle around the zodiac and returns to its natal position (a conjunction, which I’ll explain more in a bit), that’s your birthday. Or your astrological birthday, at least. (The exact moment your Sun reaches the same degree as your birth Sun may fall a day before or after the date you actually celebrate).

We can think about transits in this category as “life’s rites of passage,” because they occur at roughly the same stages of life for everyone. These happen when a planet completes a full revolution around the zodiac and returns to its natal position.

Many of these transits map the shared human experience across time.

Here are two of the most significant and widely recognized:

• Saturn Return: approximately every 29 years

• Uranus Opposition: around age 42 (the astrological backdrop of what we colloquially call the midlife crisis. It doesn’t mean you have to leave your family and buy a sports car, but it is very much a real developmental turning point in principle.)

(5) Why Do People Make Such a Big Deal out of The Moon?

You often hear astrologers, and different astrologers for different reasons, making a big deal out of the Full and New Moons, which occur each month as the two poles of the lunar cycle, or a “lunation” (a fancy way of saying the time period between New Moons).

Should you really care? Well, it depends.

On the one hand, lunar transits, meaning simply tracking the sign of the Moon, can sometimes be more noisy than helpful.

Think about it like this: you check the calendar to see what day it is. You pay attention to what time it is. But when you start watching the minute hand, or the second hand, click click click, at a certain point it pulls you out of present awareness instead of helping you observe what you’re actually feeling.

Granted, with lunar transits we’re talking about hours and days, not seconds like in that example. But if you’re already paying attention to Pluto, Saturn, Mars, and Sun transits, then relatively speaking, following the Moon can start to feel like watching the second hand.

Now, there are some important exceptions.

1. Lunar transits play a central role in certain techniques, like horary astrology.

2. Hellenistic timing concepts, such as profection years, may place greater emphasis on the Moon during specific periods of life, particularly if it becomes the Lord of the Year.

3. If the Moon is your chart ruler, you may naturally be more sensitive to lunar movement.

4. And Full Moons and New Moons, especially eclipses, which occur only a few times each year, can act as trigger moments that add context or timing to larger transit configurations that are far from trivial.

Otherwise, astrologers tend to emphasize lunations because: (a) a particular lunation may matter in broader or “global” astrology, (b) it is always something you can reliably make content around, and (c), from a less pessimistic perspective, the lunar cycle provides a steady cadence for monthly reflection and forecasting.

And look, it is generally beneficial to move with the rhythm of the lunar cycle rather than against it. The Moon is inseparable from the solar cycle, and there are important symbolic and experiential nuances here that I am admittedly simplifying.

But hey.

I’m also trying to help orient the beginner, or advanced beginner, toward a rough hierarchy of concepts and their relative importance.

Which brings me to…

(6) What About the Asteroids—Or, Like, Whatever the “Vertex” is?

Look, if you have trouble remembering what Neptune represents, or what house your Saturn falls in, I would recommend ignoring things like asteroids or dwarf planets for now.

Different astrologers incorporate dwarf planets, asteroids, and other astrological “objects” to varying degrees, but most would probably agree that you should focus on the basics first. Well, I mean, who knows. But that’s my opinion.

That would include things like:

• Ceres (dwarf planet)

• Black Moon Lilith (hypothetical or mathematical point)

• Vertex and Anti-Vertex (mathematical point)

• Lots (e.g., Part/Lot of Fortune or Part/Lot of Spirit)

Why?

1. Because nuance can get blurred very quickly when you’re trying to juggle fifteen things instead of seven or eight. If you’re learning how to dress yourself independently, it’s best to focus on the basics before you start thinking about accessories. Otherwise you might find yourself walking outside naked, thinking, “wow, I’m getting a lot of looks, everyone must really dig my new bracelet.”

2. “Pop”-ier sources often overlook doctrinal nuance that actually matters for how these points are used. For example, both the Vertex and the Lot of Fortune are sometimes described as points of fate. But one (the Vertex) emerges from modern astrology, while the other comes from traditional or Hellenistic astrology.

   1. Does it make sense to use both? Or either? Again, it depends. But you should understand why. They are not modern versus traditional equivalents, and they function very differently. The Part of Fortune plays a much larger role within its tradition, including use in highly specific timing techniques like Zodiacal Releasing. The Vertex, on the other hand, tends to carry more relevance in modern or esoteric astrology, especially in relationship astrology or synastry, and is less coherent when treated as a standalone natal indicator.

3. Many asteroids and dwarf planets also have interpretations floating around online, but some were only discovered relatively recently. There may absolutely be something there. But they do not yet carry the weight of thousands of years of accumulated observation, mythology, and cultural meaning that shaped the core planetary significations.

   1. That doesn’t mean astrologers shouldn’t use them, or that they aren’t meaningful. But for a beginner, it’s helpful to treat them like a pinch of garnish rather than the main course of the meal.

PART III: CATEGORIES OF CHANGE AND IMPACT

(7) The Heavy Hitters: A Field Guide to Transits of the “Outer Planets”

You should especially pay attention to the transits of Pluto, Neptune, Uranus, Saturn, and Jupiter.

Pluto Transits

“Pluto is particularly difficult to work with unless one has some trust in fate; but how can one trust it, unless one has spent time in despair, darkness, rage and powerlessness, and has found out what supports life when the ego can no longer make its accustomed choices? I have never found anything cheerful or funny about the transits and progressions of Pluto, no matter how psychologically knowledgeable the client is. Insight cannot spare suffering, although it can prevent blind suffering.

That rite of entry is a process I have observed on many occasions concurrent with the transits and progressions of Pluto — the gradual loss of everything which one has previously used to define one’s identity, and the ‘bowing low’ of humiliation, humility and eventual acceptance of something greater and more powerful than oneself.” - Greene, Liz. The Astrology of Fate (p. 37, 39). (Function).

Pluto transits are no joke and are often associated with some kind of death or ending (generally not literal, as much as metaphorical, symbolic, or partial). It can be the “death” of a job or a relationship or a version of you. But, again, it’s also toppling something in the inner you or perhaps structures keeping parts of the inner you trapped.

It’s not just about the death of something, it’s also about the depths of our own “ugly” parts that get jostled and forced to show themselves. The loss of a job or something, extending the example, is just a proxy—the most significant parts of the experience come from the anger or the obsession to fix or the self anger or the attempt to control or the fears about what’s going to happen or the reality of a certain, inherent powerlessness to the weight of things we can’t control.

These periods tend to mark major turning points, the kinds of moments you later recognize as defining chapters of your life. Astrologers have said this in many ways, and I always come back to Joseph Campbell’s idea that the cave you most fear holds the treasure you seek. Buried inside these themes is a kind of gold that becomes available when you’re willing to engage with what Pluto is actually trying to do. It isn’t inherently here to ruin your life or make you miserable. There is a karmic process, a reason, something meaningful to be learned. You can feel angry, curse it, and you should have outlets for that, but if you can stay open in those moments, not lose the light, you begin to see that something new and deeply powerful is being born.

Neptune Transits

“The planet Neptune symbolizes a force that is entirely beyond our control, for it is beyond the fringes of reason or of anything comprehensible to the logical mind. The only way Neptune can be truly understood in its essence is to surrender to it; for it is, by definition and function, beyond boundaries.It is only when we merge with—i.e., become boundary-less ourselves—that we can know it.” -Arroyo, Stephen. Astrology, Karma, & Transformation. (p. 43). (CRCS Publications).

“Neptune’s aspects to the inner planets symbolise an intrusion from the twilight world of the cosmic waters into the daylight world of individual identity, heralding the impossibility of ordinary contentment in the sphere of life governed by the other planet.” -Greene, Liz. The Astrological Neptune and the Quest for Redemption (p. 411). (Function).

Neptune transits don’t always “feel” so tangibly challenging—or better said, that’s not what I’d associate with them first. Neptune is the great eraser—and when Neptune is erasing self-imposed limits or a certain conservatism in life that wasn’t helpful, that might be something you would welcome. Neptune inspires, brings us closer to what we deeply long for, but also confuses, tricks, makes us see things differently in the moment than how we might, regretfully, look back on them a bit down the road.

Generally, under the influence of Neptune, awareness is pulled beyond the material, the surface level, the human-made. That’s why this transit can be associated with spiritual awakenings, creative breakthroughs, a transformative new love. But, for the same reason, it can also be associated with escapism, destructive fantasy, addiction, putting others on pedestals, or making ourselves martyrs or victims.

Uranus Transits

“Every major theme and quality that astrologers associate with the planet Uranus seems to be reflected in the myth of Prometheus with striking poetic exactitude: the initiation of radical change, the passion for freedom, the defiance of authority, the act of cosmic rebellion against a universal structure to free humanity of bondage, the urge to transcend limitation, the creative impulse, the intellectual brilliance and genius, the element of excitement and risk.” - Tarnas, Richard. Cosmos and Psyche. (p. 94). (Plume).

Uranus represents the unexpected, the evolutionary, the liberation from shackles. If Saturn transits help us negotiate, master, or rebuild certain boundaries—physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual—Uranus wants to smash down the house.

And this is especially so if we’ve resisted necessary interactive changes we’ve felt the call to make.

Uranus transits can lead to surprising breakthroughs, surprising pivots, a push toward our own originality. But, sometimes it’s a little bumpy.

You might re-build the metaphorical house in a much stronger or better way, but when you’re surveying the wreckage of the current one after it’s reduced to dust—it can be hard to feel all that enthusiastic or positive about it.

Saturn Transits

“Saturn symbolizes a psychic process as well as a quality or kind of experience. He is not merely a representative of pain, restriction, and discipline; he is also a symbol of the psychic process. natural to all human beings, by which an individual may utilise the experiences of pain, restriction, and discipline as a means for greater consciousness and fulfilment. […] The psychic process which Saturn symbolises seems to have something to do with the realisation of this inner experience of psychic completeness within the individual. Saturn is connected with the educational value of pain and with the difference between external values-those which we acquire from others-and internal values-those which we have worked to discover within ourselves.

Saturn’s role as the Beast is a necessary aspect of his meaning, for as the fairytale tells us, it is only when the Beast is loved for his own sake that he can be freed from the spell and can become the Prince.” -Greene, Liz. Saturn: A New Look at an Old Devil. (p. 10). (Weiser).

Saturn transits are very central to the personal growth, mastery, the limits and challenges of the human experience, and the consequences of cause, effect, and time.

Saturn represents limitation, discipline, and consequences, basically the cosmic authority figure that shows up right when you’re trying to live like a feral child with no responsibilities. It reminds you that you can’t just spend all your money at the candy store, ghost your obligations, or treat life like there’s no tomorrow without eventually dealing with the fallout.

Saturn rules your habits and daily structures, asking how you’re actually taking care of yourself and your life over the long haul. You might get away with chaos for a week or two, but sooner or later Saturn comes knocking like, “hey… this is what you’ve been doing consistently, and now we need to talk.”

Jupiter Transits

Jupiter expands what it touches and can fertilize new seeds. Jupiter transits can remind us of where and how life feels meaningful and exciting, where we want to grow, explore, and say yes to new experiences.

Associated with Zeus, ruler of the skies, it carries that higher perspective and big-picture vision, though sometimes with a tendency to overdo it. At its core, Jupiter is about growth, meaning-making, and our ability to see life symbolically, finding purpose and value in the stories and possibilities that make us feel alive.

Often these are opportunities for literal expansion, but with important caveats, which I discuss in much detail in Number (10).

(8) Aspect Types: Understanding the Difference Between Harmonious Opportunities & Hard Ultimatums

Conjunction

The conjunction aspect is when the planets are “next to” each other. The transiting planet is in roughly the same degree of the same sign as the natal planet. The key to the conjunction is that both planetary energies are blending together.

The conjunction is considered a “hard aspect,” which includes the square and opposition. Hard is used here more in the mathematical or structural sense of being rigid, tense, or abrupt, though yes, hard aspects can also be experienced as hard in the colloquial sense.

I don’t like the dichotomy of good versus bad in astrology, since it’s subjective, one-dimensional, and context dependent. But putting that aside, whether a conjunction feels more positive or more challenging really depends on the planets involved. This is true with all aspects, but especially with conjunctions.

Trine

The trine aspect is made when planets are 120 degrees apart, or another way of thinking about it: trines are the aspects made between different signs of the same element. A “grand trine” occurs when three planets occupy similar degrees across all three signs of one element (for example, a grand water trine).

A trine is considered a “harmonious” aspect. But contrary to a common belief, harmonious doesn’t automatically mean good. It means the planets flow easily in communication. With trines, things can seem to “just happen” without requiring deliberate intentionality, choice, or reconciliation.

Square

A square is a 90-degree aspect made between planets in similar degrees of signs that share a modality: fixed, mutable, or cardinal. The square is a hard aspect, meaning the planets involved are not naturally working together, creating situations where there’s a fork in the road. You can’t keep going straight; some intentional resolution or adjustment has to happen.

Square aspects can be frustrating, but they often force growth moments that later feel like, “damn, that wasn’t fun while I was in it, but I’m glad I went through it.” Very much a what-doesn’t-kill-you-makes-you-stronger dynamic. Big emphasis on, shit dude, I feel like I’m going to die, followed later by, damn, I’m also strong AF for having navigated that.

Sextile

The sextile aspect is made between planets that are 60 degrees apart, typically between signs that sit on either side of a shared middle sign.

The sextile is also considered a harmonious aspect. The key word for a sextile is opportunity. It presents something new, an opening door, so to speak. It requires you to walk through it. It doesn’t give you an ultimatum like a square, nor does it just appear in your house uninvited like a trine sometimes can. It’s there if you’re willing to see it, be open to it, and take some deliberate step.

Opposition

The opposition is what it sounds like: a 180-degree aspect separating planets or points in opposite signs. The opposition is also considered a hard aspect.

Unlike a square, the opposition can feel more like a perpetual seesaw, or a deliberate binary between route A and route B. And yet neither is fully the right answer. With oppositions, it can be difficult to integrate and bring the influences of both planets together.

It’s like playing tennis with yourself. Or arm-wrestling your right and left hands.

Especially with transits, the opposing planet may show up through another person, an event, or some external circumstance (though not always), helping us work out internal tension externally. Often, when a transpersonal planet opposes a personal planet, we project that transpersonal energy onto a group, situation, or collective part of life.

It’s important to remember that whatever appears externally may be a manifestation of something internally that has been ignored. Opposite signs often represent each other’s repressed shadow.

Inconjunct/Quincunx

This aspect is made by planets that are 150 degrees apart. These signs generally share very little in common.

Though not heavily emphasized in traditional astrology, I think its significance is underrated. You definitely feel this aspect, but it’s hard to put your finger on. It feels similar to an opposition, but subtler, like something is slightly out of alignment but also feels like it should be solvable.

It’s sort of like the experiential equivalent of an itch on your foot that won’t go away. Yes, a foot itch.

It’s a frustrating, itchy feeling psychologically or experientially that requires outside-the-box thinking. Almost like a zen koan, where it’s not clear whether it’s solvable at all, and understanding comes slowly through trying and failing to make sense of it.

Other Aspects

These are not the only aspects, but they are the most commonly used ones. Other schools of astrology, such as Harmonic Astrology, focus more heavily on additional aspects and on mathematically dividing the chart to isolate the “harmonics” of specific aspects. The idea is that each aspect represents a particular harmonic pattern, and emphasizing that harmonic can reveal more nuanced or specialized themes that may not stand out in the standard natal chart.

That’s beyond the scope of this piece, but worth flagging. There’s more depth available — this is just the overview. Rick Levine focuses a lot on Harmonic astrology.

PART IV: THE PHILOSOPHY OF FATE AND GOOD LUCK

(9) Stop Fearing Transits as Things That "Happen" To You

I see time and time again people viewing transits as something “external” that is “happening” to them.

The planets don’t actually affect us in a linear, cause-and-effect way. It’s more of a synchronistic relationship between what the planets are doing and the themes that consistently appear when they do those things.

A Uranus transit conjunct your natal Moon is not like an external tornado that you should fear or feel victimized by.

And it’s not really about fearing versus not fearing, as much as it is about not seeing a transit as something separate from you.

Astrologer Stephen Forrest frequently uses the phrase “As above, so below.” As he further described in his use of that phrase in a recent newsletter, “those four familiar words are really the heart of astrology. What happens above us in the sky is mirrored here on earth below. That’s true both in terms of events and also in terms of the seasons of our own minds and hearts.”

I tend to frame it more as a mirror between the inner and outer, an idea deeply embedded in Carl Jung’s writing, as well as in the psychological astrology of Arroyo and Greene, both of whom take a strongly Jungian approach.

Lamenting a Uranus transit, then, is a bit like lamenting the mirrored movement within yourself. An increasing urge for emotional freedom was already there before you realized a Uranus transit was approaching, and it would still be there even if you had never heard of astrology at all. The transit simply coincides with that urge becoming harder for the conscious mind to ignore (which you might find rather annoying).

To resist the timing of transits, along with the language and symbolism that accompany them, is therefore somewhat akin to resisting the fundamental human experience itself: a beautiful and imperfect journey shaped by growth, love, opportunity costs, hard decisions, and moments of joy within a life that is inherently limited and only partially within our control.

You can ignore transits, or you can choose to blame them. But that would be like blaming the fact that if you’re in an unhappy relationship, eventually you may need to break up, or if you’ve spent years in a career that makes you miserable, that you may have to take radical, intentional action to change direction.

Think of personal transits more like a personal clock. You may be unhappy about something that happened at 6:30 p.m. yesterday, but it would feel strange to get angry at the clock itself or assume it was out to get you.

More importantly, transiting planets represent the dynamism of life, a symbolic language mapping a path of personal and spiritual growth for those willing to listen to the subtleties, the nuances, and the quieter music of an aware life.

I think much of the fear or rejection comes from viewing transits as harbingers of fate, mechanisms delivering uncontrollable events that leave us like a bag caught in a tornado.

But to fear or reject a transit is not only to fear what feels uncontrollable. It is also, in some sense, to reject one’s own agency and human experience. Transits mark the moments that define our lives: the risks we take, the hard decisions we make, the love we find, and the grief we experience through impermanence. That impermanence, though bitter, is what gives love its meaning. If everything we loved were permanent, we would lose the very concept of value.

When we hope our sign will finally “get a break,” we are often wishing for a kind of artificial plainness, a stagnant safety or permanent protection from change. But such a state would resemble something closer to machinery than to human life.

Embrace your transits. They are shaped as much by your agency and choices as by what lies beyond your control.

My hope for anyone learning astrology is that you come to meet them with eagerness and grounded wisdom, seeing them as recurring cycles, some large and some small, whose motion creates a rhythm and a heartbeat that is somehow shared between your most private inner experience and the collective human story you are participating in.

(10) The “Lucky Transit” Fallacy: Why Nothing Special Happened During Your “Good” Transit

Some things can fall in your lap without lifting a finger, but not often, and not something you should expect. Sure, the trine aspect is often associated with things, both good and bad, happening without having to deliberately confront a fork in the road or an either/or choice. But even then, these things don’t happen in a vacuum.

The point I want to make here is largely a response to comments I see where people say, “hey, y’all said something good was supposed to happen and nothing happened. FALSE!”

What people usually mean is: nothing obvious arrived that required nothing from me.

A subscriber on my YouTube channel recently asked me to cover “how the moon signs cope,” and I thought it was a topic worth diving into.

While a natal moon always exists within the nuanced fingerprint of an individual chart, there are general themes at the sign level that are certainly worth unpacking—sometimes irreverently.

As a reminder, the significations of Natal Moon can include:

• The private, “inner personality”

• The nature of our spontaneous, “automatic” emotions

• The subconscious personality developed through our childhood upbringing

• The subjective lens of our past: Not necessarily the objective facts of how we were raised, but how we internalized and felt about that experience.

• The energy of familiarity: (Familiar = Family)

• Emotional regulation: What makes us feel safe in our own skin.

• Our early primary attachments (sometimes): Often signifying our relationship to our parents or the parent we were most emotionally tethered to.

Aries Moon

You think Aries moons are the ones that will want to throw an axe or go to one of those “rage rooms” where you can smash fluorescent light bulbs or beat the shit out of a bulky monitor from 2004. But often Aries can find themselves trapped in place, boiling over with emotions that are more scalding than they know what to do with. They face a similar problem to a Scorpio moon sometimes. The feelings can be so fiery that it’s like trying to stream an HD Formula 1 broadcast through a dial-up internet cord. Emotional turmoil seems like a threat they want to pick up a sword to defeat, as if there must be an enemy to be slain. In relationship conflict, it can be hard to just listen and validate. That feels like they’re stabbing themselves and resistance can make others feel like they’re getting stabbed. Don’t take it personally. Some Aries Moons know this full well about themselves, and if they care about you enough, they’ll at least try to reconcile their fear of hurting you with their white-hot hate of having to self-censor, which usually just ends in sweaty steam heat shooting out of their ears. Brownie points for trying. Ultimately, Aries Moons do best with some solitude. It’s been in their DNA to be somewhat self-sufficient. And while that doesn’t mean they should refuse the support of those who care, sometimes it’s best to just let the tea kettle cool.

Taurus Moon

Taurus Moon, there’s arguably nothing better for you than to curl up into the unparalleled coziness of a routine. I mean, not for nothing, it’s hard for you to be that bothered about most things. It’s not that you don’t care, it’s more that it’s hard to knock you off the throne of “chill it’s probably fine let this blow over” and send you into a spiraling pit of deregulation. Of course, this is not all that helpful if the source of the disruption is actually your inability to access material routines or to maintain control. For example, when you’re at the worst 72-hour work conference of your life for a job you just started two weeks ago, you don’t know anyone, you don’t like anyone, and you absolutely cannot leave. It’ll probably be the lunchtime spaghetti stain on your blazer that strikes T-minus 4 minutes before a required client meeting—with no Tide Pen in sight—that serves as the final straw. Otherwise, Taurus weathers the emotional storms and recharges with life’s material pleasures. It doesn’t necessarily mean retail therapy. Better though, or more sustainable, is that valuable something that’s irreplaceable, like a meal at their favorite hole-in-the-wall place, the physical touch of a partner, a cozy burrow in a clean living room with a good blanket, a view of the three plants that have miraculously survived three moves, and the unparalleled luxury of your Mom still doing "Mom things" for you even as a 34-year-old.

Gemini Moon

Gemini, you’re not usually one to go staring at wells when you’re dealing with high emotional stakes. That feels a little too Emily Dickinson at Hot Topic, a little too severe, and—frankly—a little boring. You’re more apt to go just as far in the other direction of whatever emotional thing has dug into you and actually find a certain joy in it. And maybe not joy, maybe more like an uncommon buoyancy that sits somewhere between slightly unhinged and not-quite-psychotic. It’s a state that surprises onlookers but also endows you with a dark AF sense of humor. It’s like ER nurses who can talk about the Bad Bunny halftime show while they’re sewing someone’s forehead back on. But to you, if something happened that sucks, it’s as good a time as any to pull the friend group together and maybe have some fun talking shit about it. Ultimately, what feels safe to you Gemini is often motion. Of travel, of conversation, of finding the silly silver linings. Having said that, it doesn’t mean you can just bypass the feelings altogether, so don’t get any ideas. And you might realize this when later on, or the next day, you yo-yo back and suddenly remember “oh shit yeah.” Gemini is often discussed in that back-and-forth, hot and cold way, and while in some sense it’s a platitude, in another sense it really is your gift and not just a roast. By allowing yourself to freely move between wearing the hurts and celebrating the new space that loss has made, you cope with life’s trials and tribulations not in some sad, sober marathon, but in this authentic zigzag. It’s not just an unpredictable surface-level dance, it’s the most effective means of truly learning what something meant. If you were comparing two sodas, you wouldn’t chug one and then chug the other. You’d alternate small sips of each.

I’m talking about the recent release (whatever paltry fraction of the whole it might be) of the Epstein Files.

It’s jarring. It’s disturbing.

But beyond the material content of those files, it’s also about this more 30,000 foot shock to the collective psyche that comes from it.

A lot of the populace isn’t doom-scrolling the dark alleys of conspiracy-Twitter at 3am. So when they're suddenly forced to confront an invisible network of puppet masters—architecting the world we know while veiling deeply atrocious behavior through some illuminati-style fraternity of lies—it rattles everything. An entire worldview, always taken for granted, gets shaken to its core.

And while what we know is already disturbing, what makes it so fracturing is that we’re all wading through what’s true and what’s not like a giant game of Where’s Waldo that never ends. We’re wading through what’s true and what’s not for the 2 million pages of file—but also for collective truth more broadly.

This is a death moment for informational truth, a death moment for collective trust, and an even deeper fracturing between how two people, sitting next to each other on the subway, may foundationally choose to see the world.

Also, I’m no sociologist, but however strong the supposed pillars of modern civilized society are claimed to be, when a public is explicitly confronted with the fact that people have done more jail time for unpaid parking tickets than billionaire white guys committing literally the devil’s work, welp, those pillars look about as strong as a Cheeto.

Astrologically Speaking:

Uranus’ station direct on February 3rd came in close succession to Neptune entering Aries on January 26th. The collective veil pull that’s been accelerating as Neptune completed its final trek through Pisces is now taking wrecking ball whacks, leaving a deeply disturbed collective to reconcile with what’s so far been revealed underneath.

But this is a very Plutonic moment, a poster moment of the dark, destructive part of Pluto in Aquarius, reminiscent of moments in previous Pluto cycles I’ve experienced:

• September 11th and the associated xenophobia, fears of the “out there,” Patriot Act travel restrictions, rise of “digital travel” and the internet (Pluto in Sagittarius, 1995-2008)

• Financial and housing crisis and the erosion of traditional institutions, mainstream media sources, fracturing of the “American Dream” (Pluto in Capricorn, 2008 - 2024)

Four planets—the Sun, Venus, Mercury, and Mars—all recently transiting past Pluto in Aquarius, surfacing these collective, generational themes into conscious awareness.

Describing the individual, psychological experience of Pluto (and that Cheeto that seems to hold everything together), Liz Greene writes:

Anguish, fear and deep grief often accompany these deaths, and whatever ‘part’ of us undergoes such a transition, we experience it inwardly as the whole of us if we are conscious of it at all, identifying with it and its suffering: the inevitable accompaniment of any deep change in the psyche. The mind speaks encouragingly of transformation and renewal, yet something still asks: What if there is no renewal? How can I believe hopefully in something which I cannot see and do not understand? What have I done to earn such a fate: where does my fault lie? What if the blank emptiness simply goes on and on? Any experience of deep depression carries with it the firm sense that nothing will ever change.

While Greene applies these words to a personal Pluto transit, it perfectly describes how it feels to witness these collective Pluto moments. As these horrors are revealed, we aren’t just observing them, we are also experiencing the psychological ‘death’ of a world we thought we lived in.

But, with death always comes new life. Even though it might not always be easy to see.

(2) There will be surprises this month

All of those planets, as they move towards the final degrees of Aquarius (Mercury has already passed into Pisces) are now going to make squares with Uranus, serving as this series of conscious “bursts” of both psychological or emotional realization, as well as certain urges for liberation (to have the full truth or to escape feeling trapped by it) all in succession. Sort of like a Theragun—rapid-fire pulses of intensity meant to distribute different parts of the shock, tension, and truth into conscious awareness.

Dates:

• Sunday Feb. 8th: Venus Square Uranus (surprises in partnerships, disconnect between expectations/truth & values, market disruptions, tension on economic or social structures, collective values being divided by a Super Bowl halftime show)

• Monday Feb. 16th: Sun Square Uranus (tensions/surprises placed on public leaders, struggle between egos and things beyond control, surprise high profile announcements)

• Friday Feb. 27th: Mars Square Uranus (reactive action before thought, accidents/ breakdowns especially re: technology, explosive conflicts between infrastructure/policy and aggressive truths/angry public/public good)

These transits in the “global” chart are relatively short and are usually connected to longer term themes in flight. Expect the unexpected, although these are more significant to you when made between a transiting planet and a natal planet.

The Mars square Uranus transit is perhaps the most significant, because it can produce volatile action or accidents, or even just extra “nervous-tension” in the air.

(3) There’s Karmic “Weight” This Month

One veil—a very big, deeply troubling veil—has been pulled. But now we must confront a new veil being formed with Neptune in Aries and Saturn joining: the veil we choose to wear or not wear. Or, rather, the actions we choose or choose not to take

Saturn enters Aries on Friday, February 13th. It makes an exact conjunction to Neptune the following Friday, February 20th.

By karmic weight, I mean that the way we (as individuals and as a collective) respond carries more gravity. This is a transit that only occurs ~36 years between planets with very conflicting energies, where “form and formlessness collide, to create either the gift of incarnating vision or the refusal to be psychologically born.”1

We can take on things now that we maybe wouldn’t have before. At the same time, whatever we avoid, repress, or try to escape from may entail consequences that linger much longer than they otherwise would.

The onus is on you to figure out how to navigate and operate in this moment. What do we do with this? We are beginning a long-term theme of feeling confused, yet deeply inspired to aspire for something different. But then the reality hits: “How the hell does that happen? I can’t quit my job.”

It’s not an easy energy to manage.

Yes, this conjunction has been associated with ferociously righteous political moments, extremism of one side versus the other, ideological zealotry, and grand societal visions and reorganizations justified by utopic ideals. And, in the fiery sign of Aries, certainly there is thumb on the dichotomous “right vs. wrong” frame through which a collective rise in ideological warriorship is expressed.

But, I don’t think it’s as simple as concluding, civil war is definitely coming, the sky is falling, everything is f**ked. This seems an overly negative, fatalist, martyr-like and, most importantly, incomplete expression of this energy. As Greene describes:

Thus these two planets, when in direct aspect, will engage in a profound, although often unconscious, struggle. Sometimes this results in great creative gifts and a remarkable capacity to make vision manifest. More often it results in one or other of the fundamental principles the planets represent being forced underground and projected elsewhere. Saturn is then imprisoned by its own fear, doomed eternally to patrol the walls, wasting its gifts in a fruitless search for the subversive forces which it can never wholly stamp out. And Neptune is imprisoned by its own passivity, doomed eternally to play the persecuted victim, wasting its gifts in a fog of self-pity and vague apocalyptic dreams.

I would challenge all of us to be mindful about avoiding the prison of our own fears and the fog of feeling like the eternal victim.

Of course, it’s not that simple. And, as a global transit (as opposed to, say, transit Neptune conjuncting ones natal Saturn) this is a collectively experienced moment and it is the collective unit—rather than solely the individual—that will respond to and express this.

But we’re also experiencing this moment as individuals, as we navigate and express our unique “being-ness” in the backdrop of the rare conjunction. Not only does each and every one of us form a unit in the collective mosaic, but so too is the individual inner a mirror for understanding and defining the collective outer, and vice versa.

So focus on the power of this astrology, too, which Greene also describes as the “artist’s aspect,” since a productive expression of this energy “demands that imagination is expressed in durable and meaningful structures.”2 How can we take our rawest child-like dreams, our inspirations, our boundless creative ideas and container them with form, discipline, patience. It doesn’t mean you have to go to a Michael’s and become a water color painter—more that you should try to bring that creative, artistic spirit to whatever type of work you do.

It means seeing the world honestly (including in its most horrible ufairness and ugliness, as my silly trade offer meme above highlights) while refusing to descend into ambivalence and apathy on the one hand, as well as the self-sacrificing social media martyr on the other.

Alright y’all, surprise, surprise, but I am finding it insanely hard to rope everything I want to discuss about 2026 into one newsletter—and I’ve decided I’m not going to try.

I’m gonna break a rule and entire blame natal astrological reasons for why I feel like writing with the intensity of someone who just found out the entire human race is getting wiped out in 12 hours and they, and they alone, are tasked with recording as much of human life on earth as possible in an iCloud note for when the Aliens come.

(Obviously, this is a scenario that will never happen, so my talents inevitably have to be exercised by writing impassioned Reddit posts I spontaneously write that will be 99.3% met with the classic: “I ain’t reading that shit, but happy for you. Or I’m sorry that happened.”)

(This is also why getting an A in Advanced Legal Writing in law school was probably one of the absolute pinnacles of trivial achievements. It was usually just a never-ending game of “alright, my first draft is 16 and 1/2 pages, all I have to do is get it down to 2 or less and we’re gravy.”)

Also, jokes aside, I will publish a book someday before it’s all said and done. I can’t say what it will be about or whether it will be good, but that’s a problem for the reader.

In any case, that’s why we’re going to talk about 2026 Stranger Things Season 5 style—you’re going to get it in like four and a half different installments and you’re just gonna have to take it.

2026: The Lineup

Most of this year’s BIGGEST themes are tied to a handful of planets that don’t change signs very often all changing signs this year—some of which we got a taste of last year.

1. Neptune Enters Aries (Jan 26th): Neptune only changes signs every ~14 years.

2. Saturn Enters Aries (Feb 13th): Saturn only changes signs every ~2-3 years.

3. Uranus Enters Gemini (April 25th): Uranus only changes signs every ~7 years.

4. Chiron Enters Taurus (June 19th): Chiron is weird, but cut it some slack, it’s a bit damaged. It spends ~4-8 years in each sign, but it can be shorter or longer. It’s been in Aries for ~8 years.

5. Jupiter Enters Leo (June 30th): Jupiter spends ~1 year in each sign.

All of these ingresses lining up means that 2026 is a bit like the astrological equivalent of the ping-ponging logo in the classic DVD machine screen-saver finally hitting a corner perfectly flush.

2026 *Part 1: Saturn and Neptune

Today we need to talk about Neptune and Saturn. Have I talked about these a lot at length before/last year? Yes, probably. But, it’s in your best interest to pay attention to Saturn harder than TMZ.

“In this age, which believes that there is a short cut to everything, the greatest lesson to be learned is that the most difficult way is, in the long run, the easiest.”

Currently, Saturn sits between 27 and 28 degrees of Pisces. There’s a lot of significance associated with a transiting planet’s move through the last couple degrees of a sign, and that’s perhaps more true for Saturn than for any other transiting planet.

What’s this “significance” you speak of?

• Emblematic Events: Experiences pop up that are emblematic of the major themes, lessons, challenges, and gifts of the entire cycle.

• The “Package”: Opportunities for greater awareness of “what it all meant” and to package the past 2-3 years into something tangible—whether that’s some deliberate new habit or orientation to life, or a realization that conditions how we think about or approach things going forward.

• A Life “Exhale”: A sense of subtle relief at reaching a clear end of something.

So, yes, Saturn will move into Aries on February 13th, but it’s important that you come into that with some reflection or takeaway. Otherwise, it’s like the large-time-scale equivalent of touching a stove when you were a kid, getting burned, and then walking up to the stove again and being like, “I have no clue what happened last time, but yeah, let’s touch this.”

Saturn Enters Aries

We’re going to talk about Neptune in a second, but I want to drill down on the major themes here because they’re, relatively speaking, more conscious and more directly felt.

Saturn gets a bad rap because wherever it is natally or wherever it’s transiting (house position, but especially the specific moments it activates a natal planet), it acts a bit like a personal trainer that wants to cause us pain, force us to pay attention to rules we don’t want to follow, hits us with raw honesty in a way that doesn’t feel cozy, and delays us from doing what we want to do until we concentrate hard enough or prioritize doing things that don’t feel like the most fun.

If you resist, that personal trainer kind of feels like this:

But, if you embrace it, it can be like Curt Cignetti:

(If you haven’t heard of him, he’s the football coach for the Indiana Hoosiers. Tl;dr he’s the talk of College Football this year for the (1) unprecedented success and turnaround he’s led for a historically bad program and (2) his refreshingly no-nonsense “old school” approach to building a culture of preparation, work, focus, stoicism, and mastery of fundamentals).

Saturn enters Aries, which is a zodiac sign we associate with:

• The physical body and your personality—who you “are.”

• Spontaneous and energetic movement.

• Courage and bravery.

• “Being and action” over self-consciousness or self-censorship.

• Aggression, will, and conflict (neither good nor bad, but the inevitable aspect of experience).

Over the next 2-3 years, Saturn adds challenge and weight to these themes, not to piss us off, punish, or delay everything good in life (although, at times, surely it can feel like this), but to mature “who we think we are.”

Saturn is in its fall in Aries, indicating that the work, discipline, and slowing-down associated with Saturn doesn’t always feel super easy in a sign that perpetually wants to fast forward past the opening credits of everything and just DO IT! But, when a planet is in its fall, you should consider it a situation where slightly less intuitive challenges, once taken on and conquered, lead to outsized rewards.

How should you practically think about this?

• Examine your conditioning: And I don’t mean conditioning like how long can you run, nor does it have to be as deep as a psychedelic/Buddhist/”The Matrix” dive into objective/subjective reality (although, in reasonable doses, it can’t hurt). I mean, think about the ways in which ideas about “who you are” or how other people see “who you are” direct or limit the spontaneous actions and choices you take. Do you like what you see?

• Examine how you view “your role”: There’s a lot of magic, wisdom, success, and discovery in allowing oneself to just take action sometimes—to act on a hunch, even when it doesn’t always make total sense. In what ways do you let yourself do that or in what ways do you feel blocked? Do you feel attitudes come up like “that’s not really meant for me,” “that wasn’t in the cards,” or “if I did that, what would that say about me?”

• Examine ways you might be outsourcing your power: Are you giving your agency and leadership skills to someone else, feeling that being the leader would be too selfish, or simply being scared to initiate and stick up for something? Separate having healthy humility from wearing humility as something that keeps you from having to face fears. Sometimes, confidence isn’t an inherent trait; sometimes confidence is a choice. You can’t choose to not have feelings of fear or doubt, but you can choose to try and not let them determine the decisions you make.

Neptune Leaving Pisces and Entering Aries

Neptune moves much slower than Saturn. As a transpersonal planet, the themes associated with its sign position extend beyond just the personal and get expressed in the collective, the societal, and the global.

For that reason, I’m not going to talk about Neptune in Pisces at length, but these are some things to chew on regarding the era we are leaving:

• Identification with victimhood: On one hand, much that was previously veiled or ignored was given care/empathy; on the other hand, there were examples where finding “victimhood” was treated as an ideal.

• Belief in saviors: Whether it was Obama as the savior or Trump as the savior; the mystical-level elevation of people like RBG, Fauci, or Kirk; or technological saviors like Musk.

• Devotion to systems without nuance: For example, the delusion where extremes on both side go unchecked (e.g., militant science as a religion where neither vaccines nor traditional medicine can be criticized vs. vaccines are for inputting the computer chips).

• Rise of mainstream spirituality: Both real and materialistic (e.g. yoga, breathwork, ice baths, meditation, astrology, gurus, Instagram healers).

• Intense sensitivity to what is emotionally cared for.

• Philanthropy and Institutional ideals: Big Philanthropy, some doing incredible things, and some using the machinery of legal structure as a vehicle for veiled aims.

Neptune entering Aries on January 26th is the start of a new era where the ideal will not be found “out there.” Finding spiritual meaning, inspiration, and what makes everything “worth it” is more tied up with the way that one shows up and meets the rest of life.

Of course, Neptune is never an easy energy to work with—it’s a little bit like trying to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, except all your building materials are in a gaseous form. And recording what it means for you can feel like you’re writing in disappearing ink.

But practically, I would recommend keeping the following in mind:

• Actively move towards what inspires you: There is a profound value in devoting oneself to something greater than the individual, yet we live in an age of skepticism where the “guru” has been debunked. This vacuum doesn’t absolve us of the need for meaning; it simply changes the source. We shouldn’t aim to be our own idols, but we must (1) maintain faith in our values without the need for constant validation and (2) intentionally gravitate toward things that inspire us, acknowledging that meaning often comes from something larger than our own internal world.

• Your ideals will need to be personally owned: Not only will they need to be protected from attack, ownership means re-examining those ideals when they are elevated beyond the possibility of attack. Take any opinion a person could possibly have; you can go on the internet and find content that will support the value of that opinion perfectly, and a million things that completely rip it apart. There’s an emphasis less on whether your ideals are right or wrong and more upon your personal connection to them. Chat GPT, in its current iteration, will not really challenge what you believe—it wants to make you feel good and it can infinitely reinforce and insulate delusion around how you see the world.

• Renaissance of the self: The “highest vibration” of what a human life is truly about is a theme here. Folks will be less content to just be a cog in the machinery of institutions that don’t serve them and will actively seek ways to bring a sense of wonder and beauty into their sense of self in a really powerful way.

• The danger of ideological conflict: One can also imagine where this energy creates problems—where the ideal swallows the individual or where the ideal must be wielded in conflict against another’s. A tendency to lose a sense of the collective in worship of the individual can be energetic fuel that justifies ideological conflict.

The Conjunction: February 20th, 2026

Happy January, everyone. I hope you’re all doing well.

On January 18, we have a Capricorn New Moon, which in many ways is the astrological, symbolic start of the New Year. The New Moon is exact on January 18, 2026 at 2:52 p.m. NYC time, at about 28°44′ Capricorn.

So if you’re already in your head like, “oh shit, I forgot to set intentions,” or “oh shit, I’m already off balance,” don’t fret.

And this isn’t a “don’t fret” because I’m telling you that you can simply reset everything under this New Moon, though you can. It’s a deeper “don’t fret” that comes from recognizing that the all-or-nothing mindset, the idea that it’s either perfection or a total collapse back into old habits, is one of the biggest psychological hurdles to actually changing anything. Make friends with the “oh shit.”

Cook dinner for the “oh shit, I fucked up.” Call the “oh shit, I fucked up” at a reasonable cadence, like you would any adult friend.

Make friends with it, because it’s not your enemy. And it’s also not a celebrity. You don’t need to put the “oh shit, I fucked up” on a pedestal or give it extra airtime.

Right now, a lot of personal and conscious energy is being consolidated in Capricorn. There’s a natural heaviness and seriousness here, which can be incredibly productive when used well. But the second you take anything too seriously, it all goes sideways.

I spent a lot of time on the horoscopes in this edition, so be sure to read for your rising sign. The short version is that the Cancer–Capricorn axis, wherever it falls in your chart, is especially important right now. That’s where the most meaningful ground for reflection and forward intention lives for this New Moon.

We’re also on the cusp of major phase changes that we got a preview of last year. Saturn and Neptune will be leaving Pisces and entering Aries, wrapping up three- and fourteen-year cycles, while continuing a blended lesson we’ve already started to feel. Uranus will also be moving back into Gemini for good.

Horoscopes

ARIES 

There’s a classic episode of Seinfeld where Kramer takes a test drive in a dealership car and tries to see how far he can go without refilling the gas. That’s kind of the vibe for you, Aries. And look, you’re often totally game for action and to respond to the “do it, you won’t,” but there’s also been real endurance here. A capacity to push, conquer, win, and bulldoze obstacles. But also maybe chill out just a bit.

The last few years have also been asking you to slow down and probe the invisible machinery of your life. What keeps it running? What drains it? What’s the human and spiritual equivalent of an oil change? Over the past seven or eight years, the material side of life has been a major arena of disruption—but disruption in like a growth-producing way. Perhaps big inner or outer change in how you make a living, your monetary resources and your relationship to them, priorities, definitions of success. You may be craving for material freedom. Like “if people like Jake Paul can do it, why can’t I?” It’s a fine consideration, but you can create a psychotic level of pressure around those professional and public outcomes. Winning at all costs. Beating sweet little Rebecca for the promotion. (Actually, is she even sweet?) Hitting some target in the sky no matter what. But this is where blind spots matter.

How many you have depends on how willing you’ve been to go inward over the past few years. There’s nothing wrong with focusing on security or building a foundation, especially if you’re also trying to plant real roots or trying to create a real home and family. Just don’t miss what you might be avoiding. How you approach that nagging inner pressure that feels heavy or limiting—that’s been a defining theme. Moving forward it’s going to be more of an in-your-face theme. You’re being asked to face your limits directly and learn how to work with them instead of pretending they aren’t there.

This New Moon is a powerful reset for getting emotionally honest about what you’re actually trying to accomplish and why, and whether it’s coming from genuine desire or from reflexive win-maxing mode that no longer fits.

TAURUS

Taurus, you’re approaching the bookend of an eight year transformation of who you are and what the highway of your life looks like. Do you like what you see in terms of the metaphorical rest stop plazas and scenery that you’re moving toward? You look around now as if you’re finally sensing the electricity of being in the final stretches of a major change that you’re only now appreciating the scope of.

In some sense (and bear with me here) as you understand and integrate how you’ve changed—especially over the past 8ish years—there’s suddenly other parts of your life that need to be rearranged. Let me give you a silly example. Say you were always a goldendoodle, but you were raised by wolves, so you grew up fully convinced you were a wolf. Now, over the last few years, you’ve had this slow realization like, oh shit, I’m actually a cuddly little goldendoodle. “My life is something different than I thought.” Now you have to reexamine what you believe in, what feels important, and what goals still make sense from a completely new set of lenses. Suddenly, wolf graduate school feels pointless because the curriculum doesn’t actually apply to who you are. (Also the scholarship logistics and post job prospects for wolf school was always going to be a risk. Okay, I’m done).

For many people, changes in belief trigger changes in identity. At this moment, it can feel reversed. Your identity has already shifted, and now you’re actively trying to build the belief system that fits it. You do have the pen here to write your own story, but patience matters. Trust your story to unfold as it needs, even when things feel frustrating or temporarily limiting. Ideals you once organized your life around, friendships, communities, or long term goals—some of these may seem trivial and no longer resonate with you.

That veil lift can be really disorienting, but, as you approach this New Moon, let it. Don’t rush to replace it with something half baked just to feel settled. Start re-building from what you value, find pleasure in going back to the basics. Let yourself not know for a minute.
