Earlier this morning, I was about to read more about the Pisces Full Moon (you can read what I wrote about this full moon here) when my husband mentioned he is seeing a lot more flat-earthers out there. How dare you ruin my astrological zen by bringing up flat-earthers!

So, setting aside the Pisces Full Moon, I instead got to thinking about flat-earthers and ultimately decided they’re good for business. You see, my hope is that there are enough sane people still out there—and fear of flat-earthers is so great—that previous astrology skeptics will swing around to this side of the planet.

Of course, the other side of the planet is just a straight line, right?

Raise your hand if you’re a Virgo and you’re excited for Virgo season to start on Saturday.

My astrology teacher Heidi Rose Robbins says “Leo throws the party and Virgo cleans it up” and I always think about that this time of year, when the children abandon their proverbial popsicles (Leo) and go back to school (soooo Virgo behavior—you can’t get more Virgo than a BELL SCHEDULE and NEW NOTEBOOKS and FRESH PENS/PENCILS).

If life’s a party (Leo) all the time, then is it really a party at all? And of course that’s the beauty of astrology…right when you’re done with one sign’s energy, here comes another’s to bring us something new and different.

Next week we have the full moon (+ lunar eclipse) in Pisces. These are two of our healers of the zodiac. Virgo heals the self and Pisces heals the “us.”

Virgo is devoted to the process. It is methodical and routined and precise. It is through devotion to the process and constant refinement that we change/grow/evolve/heal.

Pisces is devoted to deep listening. It is on its back in the middle of the ocean, letting the waves speak. It is through this silence that we listen to our intuition and the Universe to change/grow/evolve/heal.

This full moon/lunar eclipse is one to both listen and then take (slow, methodical) action. There’s never a need to have it all figured out. There is always a need to slow down, listen, ask the Universe for signs, and grow.

Raise your hand if you were a ‘90s kid who watched Days of Our Lives all summer long and your core memories* are of Marlena being possessed by the devil 🙋🏻‍♀️

This always makes me laugh because you actually have no idea what memories your kid will have. Maybe you’ve heard of the Saturn return. This is where Saturn returns to the sign it was when you were born. Usually around age 27-30, this represents a time in your life when you—having spent these first three-ish decades with Saturn traveling through each sign (about 2.5 years in each sign)—have now gained all the wisdom that Saturn has to offer. Right? Haha jk. Fun story is that you’ll have several Saturn returns in your life (three, if you’re lucky)! Saturn will come back around again at around age 57-60 and then again around 87-90.

I have read two things this week talking about how as a parent, you only get 18 summers with your child(ren)—apparently this is a “thing” that’s going around. I haven’t been online much this week or last, so this is proof that the algorithm/zeitgeist is going to algo/zeit no matter if you’re chronically online or not.

I particularly enjoyed this article, lauding the ‘90s mom style of summer parenting. As the comments point out, this doesn’t take into account working mothers, which was my personal mother experience, but the general hands-off nature of the ‘90s mother is one I appreciate.

We are in this time (due to the algorithm —> zeitgeist pipeline) where we, as a society, simply know too much. We are much too aware of what other people are doing and we take it on as our own personality.

See: hacking, maxxing, and viral “takes” on all manner of shit that no one really thought about 30 years ago because we didn’t have immediate access to seeing pretty, pleasant women online doing it first.

We had magazines once a month (People and Us every week), and Oprah at 4pm every weekday, so trends still found their way, but maybe not at the frequency, scope, and scale at which they happen now.

Each day I thank my lucky stars that I’m an Aquarius because boy do I see a trend and go running in the other direction. There’s something so liberating about seeing everyone else look/act/do the same and saying: Nope, not for me. I will not be pretty and pleasant.

leo season/aquarius full moon.

If you too exhausted by trends being shoved down your throat everywhere you look, that is probably your Aquarius talking. As you have heard me drone on and on about, we all have all the signs in our chart somewhere, so if you think you’ve escaped being an Aquarius, you have not!

Just like I have not escaped being a Capricorn (7th house, Mercury) or a Virgo (3rd house), you too have rebellious Aquarius knocking around in your chart.

Leo season starts next week, on Wednesday, July 22. Leo, ruled by the sun, and Aquarius’s opposite, enCOURAGEs us to be as authentically *us* as we can be. And the *us* is important here, because it’s each of *us* as Leo individuals that make up the collective *we* (aka: us) that Aquarius is all about.

It’s in Leo that we figure out who we are and how we express ourselves and how we show the world what we’re all about. And then it’s in Aquarius that we band together and use our individual strengths (Leo) for the collective good.

This season of Leo/Aquarius is the time to get rebellious. It’s a time to take ownership over who you are, who you perceive yourself to be, and how you show up to others.

It’s a time to really interrogate the media that you consume and ask the questions: Is the media consuming me or am I consuming the media? Does this Instagram really resonate with me or am I being influenced by a pretty, pleasant woman who’s being paid (and of course we love a woman getting paid) to sell me more shit?

The other day my daughter said to “touch grass” and my not-online husband didn’t know what that meant. “It’s kind of an insult,” she said. Respectfully, I disagree. We should all be out there touching grass.

So, as we look ahead to Leo season—truly the heart of summer—I have a message to the analog algorithm: please send me bird chirps, wildflowers, garden vegetables, and the sun’s rays.

There’s a lot happening today, astrologically. Mercury in Cancer moved retrograde today, until July 23. There’s a full moon in Capricorn. And Jupiter ends its past year in Cancer and moves into Leo.

Many astrologers are likely using today to capitalize on what these planets and luminaries are doing and giving you their “hot takes” and all the things you just must do today. Astrology Hack: Do all these things simultaneously or else you’ll have bad luck for the next year!

🐌 Slow down and think through things carefully (Mercury retrograde).

🌝 Release anything that is standing in the way of your total world domination (jk) (full moon in Capricorn).

💥 Get ready to step on the stage of your life and be your truest, most authentic self (Jupiter in Leo).

Maybe it’s that dawg (Aquarius) in me, but my natural inclination when big astrological things are happening is to retreat. I usually don’t have much to say, because I’m still processing it all myself.

There’s a lot of pressure for us (the collective) to use the astrology of the moment (especially on days like today, where there *is* a lot going on) to make every life-changing choice or action possible. TODAY IS THE DAY YOU WILL GET YOUR LIFE TOGETHER.

I’m always inspired to write when I’m laying in a hotel bed. Maybe it’s the starkness of the room. That I’m usually alone. That I have no patience to try to work a new (to me) TV. I’ve written in hotel beds across this great nation and beautiful world. (I’m writing today from a hotel bed in San Diego!)

(Actually I am now back at my desk at home!)

It’s from this hotel bed (desk at home) that I wish you a happy Gemini season! Ok, so the season started a few weeks ago. I’ve been later and later with getting my seasonal altars up at home. I worry that I’ve reached creative capacity on my altars, but even as I type that, I know it’s not true—I created a maypole for my Taurus season altar, hello!

There’s something about the starts of things (the timing of things) that I’m bucking right now. I always say that the planets don’t care about our earthly timekeeping systems (this is why two people who have the same birthday can be different signs—case in point, my dad and daughter), but I’m also thinking maybe I do not care about the planets’ timing, either.

Gemini season starts when I say it does!

As a writer (how Gemini!), there’s a pressure to constantly produce new content. All new ideas. Always.

But that’s tiring. And it’s not actually in practice with communication (Gemini) principles, which tell us to keep on message (consistency!). So in the spirit of working smarter not harder that I’m repurposing (with some edits) what I wrote about Gemini season last year.

Because guess what: I don’t remember what I wrote, YOU don’t remember what I wrote, and isn’t it fun (and not cringey at all) to go back and revisit the insights and knowledge from our past selves?

what I love about Gemini.

• you never know what you’re gonna get—a fun little ride for those who can hang

• they are the kings and queens of chameleon-ing—when I think of my handful of Gemini friends, they are each very serious and business-y on the one hand and then absolute little freaks on the other

• they are so open—there’s really not much you can tell a Gemini that will shock them

• along with Libra (fellow air sign), they are the best for gossiping with. As I said last year (two years ago!) about Gemini:

  gossip is just a little curious chit-chat and GEMINI SEASON IS ALL ABOUT A LITTLE CURIOUS CHIT-CHAT.

Today Jupiter and Venus are conjunct in Cancer. Jupiter is rounding out its year in Cancer, moving into Leo at the end of the moth, and Venus will move into Leo this weekend. It’s a gorgeous day for expanding love, care, doing what you enjoy, no rules, just right.

Aries: Aries are Gemini are second cousins, as both are ruled on some level by the planet Mercury, planet of communication. Aries loves a bold idea and Gemini loves helping collect all the information to make that big idea come to fruition. Jupiter is all about big ideas, so the theme is taking a first step on your big idea and trusting that if it’s coming from a place of love, then it’s a good idea.

Taurus: Guess what, Taurus and Gemini are ALSO second cousins, as both are ruled on some level by Venus. Venus will enter Leo during this Gemini season, so the theme for you this season is centered around your values and communicating those values. At the end of yoga class, my teacher (a Taurus!) closes by saying, “May your actions align with your purpose,” which is very Gemini + Taurus.

Gemini: Happy birthday! The Gemini new moon is this weekend, on Sunday, June 14. It’s a great time to plant some summer intentions. Gemini represents the branches of a tree, extending out, connecting us to our roots, and, of course, a great place for swings and climbing high to see what’s beyond. Plant seeds on the new moon that help you get to that next step. Gemini is a very mind-based sign, so I’m sure you have plenty of ideas that you can manifest!

Cancer: Jupiter ends its time in Cancer later this month, and with Jupiter being such an expansive planet and Cancer being more internal (the crab literally going back into its shell), there is an opportunity to play around with these two energies to find a good balance. Cancer’s natural leadership and Jupiter’s adventure will bring good luck to your endeavors…especially gearing up for the fire that Jupiter in Leo will bring. But first, let Jupiter in Cancer remind you that you have built the foundation—now you just have to trust the next big step.

Leo: The theme this week is to enjoy the calm (Cancer) before the storm (Leo). As a fire sign, Leo fights for self expression and the importance of speaking/being/living your truth. Jupiter and Venus in Leo this month are a setting the stage for Leo season coming up later this summer. Get excited about all the freedom, light, and energy that you have to share.

Virgo: Virgo and Gemini are first cousins (yes, I am going to keep with the cousin theme today), as both Virgo and Gemini are ruled by Mercury. The common thread among these two is the attention to detail. This is a great time for you to get all your ducks in a row and prepare for next steps, as Gemini will find all the information and Virgo will put the system/process/routine/itinerary together.

Libra: Venus, Libra’s planetary ruler, is all heart when in Leo. Libra and Gemini both love connecting and learning about others, and this season, particularly this transit of Venus into Leo, encourages you to focus on what you truly love and value and give it your fullest attention. Don’t let the loudest voice pull your attention from what matters most.

Scorpio: Shapeshifter, change maker Scorpio is often on the hunt within for self-improvement, enlightenment, and healing. The keyword here is “within”—this Gemini season, try to get up and out of the depths. It is said that once the light shines on Scorpio, it is more comfortable bringing everything forward. Use Gemini season to harness your curiosity outwardly instead of inwardly.

Sagittarius: Your ruling planet Jupiter is rounding out its time in Cancer and will move into Leo on June 29. This past year with Jupiter is in Cancer, you’ve been focusing on expanding the care you give to yourself. With that foundation set, Jupiter in Leo will be all about expressing yourself and expanding your offerings of art, creativity, and joy.

Capricorn: Capricorn wants to work, to produce, to launch. Jupiter in Leo is here to bring some fun to all the serious business and Gemini’s energy brings mischief, as well. This Gemini season, the theme is: if we have to work, let’s make it enjoyable. Let’s make sure it’s in service of the greater societal good. Let’s build structures that sustain us not just with the traditional hierarchy of needs, but the non-traditional, too.

Aquarius: Your ruling planet, Uranus, recently moved into fellow air sign Gemini, which means the time is ripe for a good ol’ revolution of the mind. Aquarius rules friendship, so in Gemini season, it’s time to get out there and forgo your natural tendency to detach. Now is the time to ATTACH. Attach to like-minded people for your revolution, pick their brains, get new ideas, and generate these ideas in new and different ways.

Pisces: With Jupiter (one of Pisces’s exoteric rulers) moving into Leo, the theme here is careful expansion. Pisces, Jupiter, and Gemini together want to really try it all in the name of healing. There’s a curiosity (Gemini) around trying new healing modalities (Pisces) and a willingness to try anything (Jupiter). This can work or it cannot. I recently pulled a card from my friend Sarah Evangelista’s Whispers from the Animal Heart deck that left me with this question I’ve been pondering, “Where have I denied myself joy in the name of healing?” Jupiter in Leo reminds you that joy is the healing.

This past weekend, I was in Orange County, celebrating my favorite Taurus (my daughter)’s 15th birthday. Longtime listeners will recall that I went into labor with this earth angel while watching The Real Housewives of Orange County. It was the season where Gretchen kept referring to Slade as “tubba wubba.”

This is the only storyline I remember from that season, so you can imagine my utter delight at spotting a one Ms. Gretchen Christine Beaute at lunch on the first day of our trip.

It was beshert!

I wish I could say that I stopped to tell her, DO YOU SEE THIS GORGEOUS GIRL NEXT TO ME? I WENT INTO LABOR WITH HER WHILE I WAS WATCHING YOU ON THE TEEVEE, but I decided against it because I am shy, believe it or not.

The only thing better would have been seeing all the Housewives at the restaurant, filming and fighting. ONE DAY!

All that to say, we are now in Taurus season! Nature abounds, there is a slowness in the air, and we are all hopefully imbued with some patience.

Have we talked before about the epidemic of busy? You know, you ask someone how they’re doing and they say, “so busy!” (I do it too.)

I can’t decide what’s more annoying—someone (me) being so cliche and ordinary as to say they’re busy, or someone (not me!) acting like they’re the “busiest.” Actually, I’ve answered my own question: it’s the latter.

Can we all just collectively take a moment to acknowledge that those people—for whom busyness is a sport and they are #1—are THE WORST?! We are all busy, Janice, shut up.

What’s this got to do with Taurus season? Well, see above re: patience and slowness.

My wish for us this Taurus season is that we all just calm tf down for a moment. That we work on our own timelines, that we rest up, chill out, say damn the man, and do things our own way.

Taurus is, after all, a fixed sign.

Also a fixed sign, Scorpio’s full moon arrives this Friday, May 1. The Taurus/Scorpio polarity is one where we’re looking at MY (Taurus) resources in partnership with YOUR (Scorpio) resources. Meaning: What do I (Taurus) have that you/the collective (Scorpio) need?

Taurus, like Libra, loves a beautiful space/surroundings. (Both Taurus and Libra are ruled by Venus.) Taurus/Scorpio asks, what is the point of all the beauty if not to share it with others?

Scorpio is ruled by both Mars and Pluto, but Pluto on a deeper level. And deeper is the name of the game with Scorpio, whose purpose is to shepherd us all through periods of change and transformation (Pluto) with courage and bravery (Mars).

On this full Scorpio Full Moon, look at where the moon is transiting your chart. What areas of your life are having the Taurus light shone on them and asking to come out from the Scorpio dark?

uranus enters gemini.

Uranus recently moved back into Gemini, where it’ll stay until 2033. While Uranus was in Taurus for the past 8-ish years, it was transiting right over people who are Tauruses. Now, it’ll transit all the Geminis.

Here’s the fun part: even if you’re not a Gemini (and only about 10% of the world population is a Gemini, a statistic I Googled, but did not fact-check), 100% us has Gemini in our chart somewhere.

For me, I have Gemini ruling my 12th house of the unseen, the unknown, the subconscious, and the mystery of life. For the next 7-ish years, I can expect some disruption in this 12th house space. I can also expect to ask a lot of questions when it comes to spirituality and healing. This might be the time where I start to really dive into my clairvoyance!

For you, since you have Gemini in your chart somewhere, this is the area of your life where you can expect some of that Uranus disruption, rebellion, reinvention, innovation, and rabble-rousing. You can expect to ask a lot of questions (Gemini) about this area of your life and really get curious (Gemini) about what’s next for you (Uranus).

I wrote about Aries season yesterday, but wanted to come back and delve into a little bit more about what’s happening in the sky right now. What I love about the stars is that they’re an ever-changing landscape—as soon as you get used to one energy, a planet shifts and everything is different once again.

Ah, what a metaphor for life. Embracing the impermanence, etc.

Along with the sun moving into Aries (astrological new year/start of spring), we are lucky to have a handful of other planets making some complementary magic up there in the sky.

Happy Aries season to Aries and non-Aries alike—which of course means ALL OF US, since we all have all the signs in our chart somewhere.

I did an astrological new year / welcome Aries season event at my local yoga studio this past weekend. A yoga teacher led us in a fire-taming/slow-building flow, followed by a sound bath, and then I discussed the astrology of the moment and we set intentions.

I don’t do live events too often, maybe just a few times a year, but I do love them so much. We didn’t have any Aries in attendance, which seemed fitting. It was the first full day of Aries season, so I like to think all our headstrong friends were out getting into good trouble out there.

With Aries comes spring (here in the northern hemisphere) and life starting to show. There are leaves on the trees and flowers on the plants! Much better for feeling alive and ready to tackle a new year than December/January.

Aries is a bold, initiating energy, ready to jump right in and start something, even if there’s not quite a plan yet. ESPECIALLY if there’s not quite a plan yet.

The gift of Aries is that it doesn’t need much to get started, just a will to go into the unknown.

I love Aries’s fearlessness and courage. I love how Aries doesn’t need anyone else—but wise Aries will know that there is strength in numbers, so it’s a good thing to let other people into your journey.

Because the zodiac goes in a circle, with Aries season we are, in a sense, starting again. As we journey through the signs, beginning with Aries and ending with Pisces, we pick up knowledge along the way. By the time we get to Pisces, we have tons of knowledge. The knowledge doesn’t go away when Aries season begins again—it synthesizes and gives us more insights and information for this next journey around.

I was recently in a meditation class with my friend and meditation teacher Lily and we were discussing the Oura ring. We also discussed the Real Housewives of Potomac, so you might be thinking, Sarah, I thought you said this was a meditation class? and you would be correct! Meditation or not, we are still humans and humans sometimes have conversations that go different directions. Humans having tangential conversations is actually proof of what I’m getting at today, which is what I said during meditation class: I don’t need a robot (the Oura ring) telling me I don’t sleep well. I actually think WE KNOW TOO MUCH. And too much knowing is getting in the way of human interaction.

If Pisces feels like a mystery, that’s because it is. There’s a depth to Pisces that us mere mortals just don’t understand. Pisces carries the wisdom of the 11 signs that come before it and that wisdom shows. Pisces has:

🕯️Intuition

🪐Connection to the universe

🩹Healing powers

🌊A deep and vast love for humanity

Aquarius, right before Pisces, finds all the ways in which humanity needs to improve/rebel against the status quo. Pisces comes in and softens the edges.

Pisces does not act with any less gumption and rage* than Aquarius does, but I do think Pisces softens the blow and makes the change/necessary destruction more palatable.

In the end, this is very good for the greater cause!

*I think it’s important to be rageful. I used to try not to have rage, but then I heard my lord and savior Alanis Morissette say that rage was her favorite emotion and I thought, well if it’s good enough for Alanis, then it’s good enough for me! If you’re not raging, then do you even care? And if you don’t care, then what exactly are you doing here on this planet? If you’re not providing a service to humanity, then…?

Maybe you’re reading this and thinking, well I am not a Pisces, so what do I care? You know what I’m going to say! We all have Pisces somewhere within us.

In my chart, I have Mars and Venus conjunct in Pisces. My chart, interestingly, is made up of all conjunctions: Mars/Venus (Pisces), Sun/Moon (Aquarius), Jupiter/Uranus (Sagittarius), and Pluto/Saturn (Libra/Scorpio).

There’s power in twos, which is a good reminder for any of us out here doing that rage-driven work. You don’t have to take everything on yourself. You can find a buddy and go from there.

You can also do something very small. Not everyone is meant for taking to the streets with signs (no pun intended). You can be vigilant and fight for humanity in your own way. But you don’t have to do it alone.

Today is my birthday!

I typically do not like people knowing it’s my birthday. Well, I actually don’t care IF people know it’s my birthday, but I am not a “it’s my birthday!” kind of person (no judgment if you are! I enjoy people who are “it’s my birthday!” people because it means opportunities for fun!)

However, in recent years, GIVEN MY WORK OF NEEDING TO KNOW PEOPLES’ BIRTHDAYS, I am trying to change that.

Hence: today is my birthday!

I have completed one year ‘round the sun. One big circle, my 43rd.

round and round we go.

I got to thinking about cycles today (because birthdays) and because I have been in a creative rut and am hoping (and believing) that it’s just simply because this is a season of rest and that soon enough, I’ll circle back around and be back in the creative flow.

Like clock (A CIRCLE) work, I stumbled upon this post by my Substack friend Angela Ellison. I originally read it back in December and was happy that it reappeared to me now.

Angela says, about the path of entrepreneurship for creatives:

These phases are layers. Over time, they add depth, perspective, and wisdom. They’re what allow us to move forward with more intention and clearer strategy. This growth happens because we have been listening carefully along the way.

the moon: also a circle, go figure.

I am reading a book that my friend Emily gifted me about using astrology/tarot/etc. in the creative process.

(Yes, I am reading about being creative rather than being creative, but THAT IS PART OF THE PROCESS! I think.)

One of the things that stuck with me from a recent reading was that creative work follows the moon’s cycle. This does not necessarily mean that because the moon is currently in its waning crescent phase, that means my creative endeavors are in a waning crescent phase, but more like within each of us, our work may be in different phases, similar to those of the moon.

I am in my dark moon phase, creatively. (I was born in a dark moon phase, so isn’t that poetic?)

I try not to be the person to have their phone out, constantly taking pictures. Almost every time I am with friends, the only tangible proof of our convening is whatever my memory can conjure up.

And this is great!

However, also great is having something tangible to reflect on. A quick perusal of my camera roll lets me know the last photo I took was January 31. The one before that was January 23.

What have I been up to? Without picture proof, do I actually have a life?

Does that even matter?

(Circle of thought.)

To me it matters, so here are some pictures from “recently”:

birthday poem.

The creativity well is not totally dry. I wrote this poem, from a prompt provided by Kate Belew.

(If we must continue with the circle analogy, and we’ve come this far, so we must: a birthday cake is a circle.)

and finally, the astrology.

On Tuesday, February 17, we have the second new moon (a solar eclipse) of the calendar year, which means it’s officially the year of the horse. The Aquarius New Moon always feels like another birthday to me because, as I said earlier, I was born right before one. Kinship with the moon.

The last time we had a solar eclipse in Aquarius was February 2018. Out of curiosity, I took a dive back into my cameral roll from this time and found ZERO pictures from October 2017 to February 16, 2018. Ah, the dark moon phase comes for me cyclically, I see!

Fun group experiment: Go see what was happening in your life in February 2018. Let’s see if things circle back around during this new moon solar eclipse.

And as you work with the new moon, remember: Life ebbs and flows. Creativity comes and goes. (IF YOU ARE CREATIVE ALL OF THE TIME, THEN DOES CREATIVITY EXIST AT ALL?) Light a candle, sit in silence, and ponder life, Aquarius New Moon-style:

I saw something recently on Instagram that showed the astrological signs for the characters on The Pitt. Whoever put it together did a great job because I had no notes.

They had Dr. Mel King as an Aquarius, which felt very warm and comforting to me. And Dr. Robby as a Capricorn and Dr. Al-Hashimi as a Virgo? I particularly enjoyed that.

BATTLE OF THE EARTH SIGNS: WHO WILL DOMINATE?

If you’re not watching The Pitt, I don’t understand. It’s the best show on television. Some people are saving up the episodes to binge it, but I’ve been watching it weekly—appointment television, just like the old days.

Simultaneously, my daughter and I are watching Grey’s Anatomy and I tried to talk her into watching The Pitt (mostly so I could rewatch season 1), but she wasn’t interested.

Anyway, what’s The Pitt got to do with astrology? Well, nothing, really! Other than the Instagram post, which made me realize, oh yes, here are two things I love: astrology and The Pitt.

In-mid December of last year, I attended my astrology teacher Heidi Rose Robbins’s monthly poetry hour (if you read this post from earlier in the week, you’ll remember it was at this gathering that Heidi assigned me the responsibility of finding “poems about food.”) A week later, right before the winter solstice, I did a writing circle with Kate Belew, where one of the prompts was “In winter…,” inspired by Mary Oliver’s White-Eyes.

I wrote an “imperfect draft” (as Kate says) about my neighbor’s orange tree. There was something there, but I wasn’t sure what and so I did what I always do—when the bell rang on our time together, I went back to life and forgot about it.

A few days later, before Christmas, my friend and her boyfriend drove up to stay the night on their way to her mom’s for the holiday. At some point she mentioned needing an orange for a glaze for a cake and I said, HOLD ON and then went outside and got an orange that had fallen off my neighbor’s orange tree and into my yard.

Then last night, I was in Heidi’s January poetry hour (where indeed, she read some of the poems about food) when the doorbell rang. Now, I am not a door-answering kind of person, but I am married to a door-answering kind of person, and so when I retreated from the bedroom to the kitchen after the poetry gathering, you can imagine my delight at seeing a big bag of oranges on the counter!

Here, among it all, was a real-life representation of poems about food:

I said to my husband, Hey, I wrote about this a few weeks ago! and I paged through my notebook until I found that imperfect draft and then I read it aloud.

The aloudness is, QUITE FRANKLY, the most uncomfortable part of writing—there’s something about the earnestness of sharing work OUT LOUD (shudders, screams) that will take me awhile to master. But sharing in print I can do, and so here’s my winter solstice piece, written on 12/19/2025:

Yesterday my family and I did a vision-boarding session with my friend Emily. Vision-boarding always gives me appreciation for magazine designers. Like, did you know that this cool font you chose was going to end up cut out and glue-sticked onto a piece of cardstock? Thank you for your service!

When I did my vision board for 2025, the imagery I was drawn to was a door. I ended up randomly finding doors throughout the first half of the year—both in imagery online (it would be nice to say I found doors through things like art or books, but we live in an online world, oh well) and in things I created:

1. I wrote about doors (kind of) and how they are the in-between spaces.

2. I created a door in my art journal and put a poem behind it:

At the time I thought maybe 2025 would be a year of doors opening or something new happening. I have a lot of astrological placements in signs/houses whose default mode is to GET OUT / FIND SOMETHING NEW:

🛂Venus in Pisces the 9th house—seeking beauty and love through adventure and culture.

🌱Jupiter and Uranus in Sagittarius in the 5th house—growth and change as part of my self-expression.

(I also have Cancer rising, which keeps me firmly at home, or making myself a home when I’m on the road—maybe this is why I rearrange the hotel furniture as soon as I get there.)

Anyway, turns out the door of 2025 was more ajar. It didn’t really open much, just sort of stayed slightly open—enough that I could theoretically imagine there was something beyond, but unclear what that something was.

2025 was that in-between space.

Now firmly into the new calendar year (2026 is a 1 year in numerology, which symbolizes new beginnings), and soon into the year of the horse (which doesn’t start until after the second new moon post-winter solstice—so on February 17 this year), I am beginning to think that THE DOOR was just…the years themselves.

An entire year of being on one side, waiting for the invitation to cross over the threshold, and then in 2026, that invitation came. Personally, things are feeling more fresh, like there’s finally air coming in.

capricorn new moon.

The first new moon of the year is this Sunday, January 18, in Capricorn. Whether you are a Capricorn or not, you will be supported by this new moon’s energy, particularly around anything you want to start or launch. You are also very supported in anything you want to stop doing. Capricorn reminds you that you have all the strength and discipline you need—you just need to be committed.

My friend Sarah Evangelista created this animal medicine deck and in lieu of saying anything else about doors, I decided we could all use a little of Capricorn’s earth energy and see what the animals have to say. Here is the card I pulled for us:

Here is an excerpt from what Sarah wrote about the phoenix card:

“Let her teach you that every flame you survive becomes light in your bones. Rise now. Not as who you were…But as who you truly are: radiant, undivided, sovereign.”

This speaks to Capricorn for a few reasons:

Capricorn rules our bones/skeletal system. I love that the message here is about light in the bones. I am reading this as not only light as in lumination, but also light as in lack of weight. May the loads that our bones carry be lighter.

The word sovereign is also interesting to me, as Capricorn rules government structures and heads of government. There is a huge push/pull right now: our personal sovereignty and the sovereignty of our government is at odds with someone who thinks of himself and acts as a sovereign (supreme) leader. I wonder what work we, collectively, can do to assert our own sovereignty in the face of a sovereign—and to fight for the true sovereignty of our government.

I’m starting to get some Aquarius season vibes, here…

Last month I was in a poetry gathering with my astrology teacher, where at some point she gave me an assignment to find poems about food.

I responded that very few people can tell me what to do—there’s a reason I nearly failed my senior year of high school, I must have been at capacity with authority figures by then—but I told her I’d do anything for her.

What followed was several weeks of me absently and occasionally thinking that I needed to complete my assignment, but then doing nothing about it.

(Are we sensing a theme?)

Until today, when I finally sat down and perused all the poems about food that the Poetry Foundation has on their website.

An analog gal at heart, I also pulled Billy Collins’s AIMLESS LOVE off my bookshelf. I don’t have many books of poetry, but I knew Billy would come through. And boy did he!

I wouldn’t call myself a poet in the sense that I have any idea what I’m doing with poetry. If I ever learned anything about poetry in school, no I didn’t, because I wasn’t paying attention.

But I would call myself a poet in the sense that sometimes I write things down—as I am doing right now—in a style all my own, as a way to have a little fun or to make some kind of point. And I hope not in a “let me teach you a lesson!” kind of way— although I am an Aquarius, so sometimes that happens—but in way to figure out something about myself. You know?

Happy pre-New Year, which is to say that the actual new year is represented by the start of Spring, and Aries season, in March.

Now that that’s out of the way, I can acknowledge (as I do probably every year) that there is something nice about the changing of the calendar. The change in year represents a new day planner to keep all my appointments (ophthalmologist on 1/17, don’t forget), packed yoga classes (good for the studio, bad for me getting my usual spot), and all new spreadsheet tabs for me to organize the many moving parts of my life.

Here in California’s central valley, the sun has finally started to emerge. Throughout November and most of December, we were cloaked in a high layer of fog. Not low enough to be fogGY, but high enough that the sun never shone. Then the fog dissipated and turned to rain, but guess what? There’s no sun when it rains, either.

This is not an essay about the weather, but if I was going to write one of those, it would be about how people eschew weather talk as “boring,” but all weather is is a physical representation of the changing seasons. And to me, those changing seasons are directly related to where we are astrologically.

honoring nature’s astrological cycle.

Up here in the northern hemisphere, Aries season begins the spring season and with it, the time to plant seeds. It’s the time to start anew, and we experience this with our bare hands in the soil, planting the seeds that we want to come to fruition. Or, we set new years intentions…what to do we want to grow this year? The weather is still chilly, but the last frost has passed and it is time! No more snow and although maybe we can’t see the path, we can definitely begin to create one ourselves.

Taurus season pops up next and with it, the seeds we planted in Aries season! The April Showers really do bring May Flowers—yes, THE WEATHER (boring weather!) brings us colorful buds and green leaves. Figuratively, the intentions we set in Aries season begin to manifest. We make sure we are resourcing ourselves well, whether through the literal food we are growing or through other means. The sprouts are here to remind us that we have the power to make and grow anything.

Gemini can be represented by a sapling. Still young and growing, but rooting down and making its place in the world and greater community. Gemini is where we start to form our opinions. It is the time of asking lots of questions and getting as many answers as we can—in preparation for the rooting that we do ourselves, as we become who we are.

Cancer season ushers in summer time—all the veggies and fruits that we planted in Aries start to show up as tiny versions of themselves. If you’ve ever grown cucumbers or melons in particular, there is something so delightful about seeing an adorable little miniature on the vine. It looks just like a melon, but it’s the size of a quarter! Cancer season starts to take shelter (safety, of the utmost importance to Cancer) under Gemini’s branches.

Leo season—full heat of summer—brings the fruits and veggies to their almost-peak. The teeny-tiny melons become real melons you can probably eat! But if you’ve ever picked a veggie too soon, you know the feeling of both excitement and disappointment rolled into one. Often the veggies are not quite ready. Much like Leo represents childhood and children, so this season is a time when we are maybe a little too excited and lack the patience necessary to let the veggies sit and ripen. Jump in the pool and let the strong heat (and not too much water!) do its magic job of making the fruits and veggies perfect.

Virgo season begins the harvest. Finally! Virgo season is the time where we reap what we’ve sown. It is the time of stockpiling your resources (planted way back in Aries season) and getting yourself ready for the dark months. Astrologically, Virgo is a time of refinement and care. We take stock of our health—what’s working and what’s not. We refine our habits to make sure we are going into fall and winter well-prepared.

Libra season—hello fall! Libra season when the earth really starts to show off her beauty. The orange, red, and yellow leaves paint the landscape with color. Libra is a time to go inward—Virgo season helped us see what needs to shift and Libra is the time to make the shift. Much like the gorgeous leaves and gourd-geous vegetables that decorate our sidewalks and tables, we humans also start to go inward and beautify ourselves.

Scorpio, season of regeneration. There’s a term called “leave the leaves,” which we sadly don’t practice much of in our cookie-cutter world. Leave the leaves means exactly that: Leave the leaves to do their job for our ecosystem. Leave the leaves so they can fertilize the soil and give us better and more nutrient land for next year’s season. At first I wrote, “fertilize the soul,” and since there are no mistakes, let’s go with that! Scorpio is the time to fertilize our soul. Like the animals, we begin to hibernate and rest for all the change that is to come.

In nature, Sagittarius season is dark and cold. Maybe in some places it’s snowing and storming. But it’s during Sagittarius season that we really ramp up the revelry and community—holiday parties and general bacchanalia—so there’s an element to this season that really turns the expected on its head. We cause a storm ourselves, flitting here and there, from house to house, knocking the mud off our boots and gathering together for fun and adventure.

Capricorn season (hi!) brings the final season of the astrological year, winter. Slowly (ever so slowly), we start to see the light. I cannot stress this enough (special message just for you, Capricorns): take it slow! We are still resting and hibernating. We are plotting (our gardens, our next moves) and planning. But we are not DOING much yet. Look outside: I’m looking outside right now and it’s still. There is not one leaf on a tree, but that doesn’t mean nothing is happening in there. It’s growing. You’re growing. Slowly.

Aquarius is the water bearer (but an air sign, in case there is any confusion). In Aquarius season, we are still laying low, but the rain and snow are still pouring forth. Nature is giving to us, whether we want it or not. Sometimes in Aquarius season (particularly around my birthday), we might get a fake spring day. It’ll be 80 degrees and you’ll get so excited for spring, but then it goes back. That’s just a little Aquarian trickery to say, you think you know? You have no idea. Ride the wave of not knowing right into…

Pisces, our final chapter. Aquarius passes the water bearer title onto Pisces (the watery-est of the signs!). Maybe you’ve noticed that the leaves that you left back in Scorpio season are gone. Where did they go—hmm, through the power of water and dirt (i.e., mud), they started to do their job of going back into the earth. Similarly, Pisces is the synthesis of knowledge, growth, and information of the preceding signs. It is the old sage. It knows things and is ready to start the next year with more wisdom under its belt.

This past weekend I attended a “favorite things” party at my friend’s house. If you’ve never been to a favorite things party, the brief is that you bring two of your favorite things (or favorite thingses) unwrapped, and then, after picking numbers out of a hat to see who goes first, people go around and pick someone else’s favorite thing to take home. If you went last (as I did), then you go first for round two. I personally ended up with a fun assortment that included a hand-dyed tea towel, earrings, and more!

But of course, me being me, I also had observations about everyone’s favorite things and it got me thinking about society in general (hi, my Aquarius is showing) and what it is we prioritize as a society.
