I trawled endless pages on Airbnb to find a place that felt right and eventually stumbled upon a property owned by a British interior designer called Daisy and her builder husband. It was the old notary’s office, which meant the building was incredibly unique, with an open-roof courtyard in the middle of the hallway. My bedroom had a huge four-poster mahogany bed and an en suite bathroom with a roll-top bath. It ticked all the boxes, although I’ll I admit I did have a few nerves about staying with a stranger.

I took the 6-hour coach down and Daisy picked me up at the bus station. Keep in mind this was 15 years ago, before smart phones became the appendages they are now, but I felt instantly at ease with my host.

I packed a book. I don’t think I took my laptop. And committed to just having fun. If I got bored, well, so be it.

I remember spending endless hours on the beach, my favourite activity to this day. And when I wanted to swap one body of water for another, I would climb into my roll-top bath, fill it until I was almost submerged and listen to Bossa Nova for hours.

This, I thought, is heaven.

That trip marked the beginning of a ritual that I’ve returned to time and time again.

I get a lot of questions from friends I know in real life, and friends on the internet, about travelling alone. Do I get bored? Is it scary? What do I actually do?

And if there is one thing I would hope to convince more women to do, it is to take a trip just for themselves.

My shortest solo stint has been 48 hours. My longest has been 18 days. And when I say solo trip, I mean exactly that. I’m not necessarily travelling around or making plans to meet people, although sometimes life intervenes.

Last year, for example, I was on the same stretch of coast that I am now when I discovered that a friend from Estonia, whom I hadn’t seen for more than 10 years, just so happened to be in Nice. We met for lunch and coffee, and it was such a joy.

But typically, I am by myself.

For me, and I suspect for a lot of women, modern life is full of incessant noise, demands and responsibilities. A solo trip offers a temporary escape from all of that. It gives me the rarest thing of all - space.

To process.

Solo travel creates enough distance from your normal life to actually hear yourself think. If you’re anything like me, normal life doesn’t leave much room for that. We’re constantly responding, producing, organising, remembering, managing, doing.

Often, we don’t even know what we think about something because we’ve never had enough uninterrupted space to find out. Stepping outside of the banality of routine, even for 48 hours, can interrupt that autopilot and you can slowly begin to recentre yourself.

Processing isn’t necessarily reserved for when something terrible has happened. Life simply accumulates. Work. Family. Relationships. Decisions. WhatsApps. Washing. People need answers and even the things you love create noise. There’s something about leaving your usual environment that gives the thoughts sitting reluctantly underneath all of it a chance to surface.

I’m writing this from the South of France, on another solo trip, and I can feel that happening in real time. Some days I’ve walked for hours. Some days I’ve barely done anything beyond going to the beach, reading and deciding what I want for dinner. Somewhere in the space between those things, thoughts I haven’t had time to properly sit with at home have started to untangle themselves without me forcing them to.

Perhaps most importantly, processing doesn’t have to mean furiously journalling for seven hours in pursuit of some grand revelation. Sometimes it looks like swimming. Reading. Wandering around a supermarket. Having an afternoon nap. Staring at the sea for longer than feels productive.

Or suddenly realising, three days into a trip, that you haven’t thought about the thing that had been consuming you at home for hours.

For pleasure

As a woman, there is something almost radical about spending money, time and effort on an experience whose primary beneficiary is you.

Not because you’re celebrating somebody’s birthday. Not because your partner wants to go there. Not because it’s a girls’ trip. Not because you’re visiting family. Not because it’s good content.

Just because you wanted to.

There is an almost decadent selfishness in a day planned solely around your own wants and needs. You can lie on the beach for six hours without worrying that someone else is bored. You can have the same lunch three days in a row. You can decide that the museum you planned to visit now sounds exhausting. You can spend the entire afternoon in the bath.

You can waste your own time.

When even our rest and leisure have become things we feel pressure to maximise, a solo trip gives you permission not to. Perhaps a part of the luxury is that nothing has to be optimised. The day doesn’t have to be impressive, productive or even particularly memorable. It only has to feel good to you.

For you

Even travelling with someone you adore requires a near-constant stream of micro negotiations.

Where should we eat? What time should we leave? Do you want to go to the beach or the museum? Are you tired? Are you hungry? Do you mind if I shower first? Shall we get a taxi?

None of these questions is particularly taxing on its own, but collectively they require you to continually hold another person’s wants alongside your own. One of the greatest luxuries of travelling alone is that you don’t have to negotiate. You are in charge and the entire cognitive load of anticipating and accommodating other people’s needs disappears.

Women are constantly remembering, organising, replying, considering, accommodating and deciding. On a solo trip, the number of people whose needs you have to consider collapses to just one. You.

There is something very delicious about asking yourself, “What do you want for dinner?”, answering, “I don’t know yet,” and that being the end of the conversation.

And after enough time alone, the question shifts from what do I want to do today? to what do I actually like? When nobody else is influencing your day, you get to uncover your true preferences. Maybe you realise you don’t care about seeing every sight. Maybe your perfect day really is four hours on a beach, a long lunch and a wander around a supermarket. Maybe you like eating early. Maybe you want to walk for three hours and then do absolutely nothing.

I’ve always thought of a solo trip as a lesson in self-discovery.

“What do you do all day?” is one of the questions I’m asked most. People can’t comprehend how I can entertain myself for a two and half week stint. While I don’t have the type of brain that gets bored, we have become so frightened of unoccupied time.

A solo trip gives you nowhere to hide from it. And eventually any boredom mutates into something else. Curiosity. Observation. Creativity. Rest. You start noticing what you’re thinking about. You read another chapter. You walk somewhere. Or you simply remain bored for a bit.

15 years ago, I went to Alumencar with the understanding that if I got bored, I would simply have to be bored. There wasn’t endless scrolling or the constant connectivity we have today.

Now however, you could theoretically fill every second with your phone. It’s very easy to travel alone physically while never being alone mentally, thanks to the tiny computers we carry with us at all times. The bigger challenge now is resisting the urge to electronically recreate the noise you’ve travelled hundreds of miles to escape.

There is also a gentle distinction between solo travel and taking a solo trip. I’m not describing backpacking around six countries, constantly sightseeing, staying in hostels and making friends with strangers. Your version can be incredibly still. You arrive somewhere, settle in and make it temporarily yours.

I’m not suggesting everyone suddenly books an 18-day trip alone either. Start smaller.

Maybe you’ve read this thinking, That sounds lovely, but I could never do it. I understand the hesitation. Travelling alone can sound far more daunting than it often feels in practice. But you don’t need to be fearless, wildly independent or particularly adventurous to take yourself away for a couple of days. You also don’t need to cross an ocean.

My shortest solo trip has been 48 hours. Yours might be 36. It might be one night in a hotel three hours away, or a weekend somewhere you’ve always wanted to visit. You do not need to resign from your job and backpack through Southeast Asia for it to count.

The point isn’t to prove how adventurous you are. It’s to experience, even briefly, what it feels like to be answerable only to yourself.

You don’t have to be single. You don’t have to be extroverted. You don’t have to be especially brave. And you certainly don’t have to think of yourself as “the kind of woman who travels alone.”

You just have to be willing to spend a little time making yourself the only person whose opinion you need to consult.

Because really, this isn’t an argument that every woman should travel alone. It’s an argument that women deserve experiences that exist solely for themselves. Experiences that don’t need to be justified by work, relationships, family, productivity or anyone else’s enjoyment.

A solo trip just happens to be one of the most powerful ways I’ve found to practise that.

It can be innocent - the soft-fleshed fruit of childhood summers, juice running down your wrists, the kind of sweetness you didn’t yet know could mean anything other than pleasure. And it can be strange and storybookish too, the weird and wonderful world of James and the Giant Peach, all Roald Dahl absurdity and oversized fantasy.

But peach also has an undeniable raciness to it.

It’s sticky. Sexy. Juicy. A little overripe in the best possible way. There is surely a reason a pert bottom is described as “peachy”, and why the peach emoji has become shorthand for something far less lunchbox-friendly.

Peach isn’t exotically sexy in the way guava might be. It doesn’t have the tropical swagger of mango or passionfruit. But it stirs far more emotion than, say, an apple - a decidedly unsexy aroma, in my opinion. Not that I’ve formally ranked fruits by erotic potential. Yet.

In fragrance, peach behaves in multiple ways. It can be creamy and lactonic, like skin warmed by the sun. It can be syrupy and nostalgic, recalling tinned peaches, peach rings and body sprays permeating teenage bedrooms. It can be plush and powdery, tucked into florals to make them feel softer, rounder and more touchable. Or it can become almost animalic - all fuzzy skin, ripe flesh and the sense that something is about to happen.

That’s what makes peach so interesting. It sits somewhere between innocence and innuendo, childhood and chemistry, fruit bowl and flirtation.

A good peach fragrance doesn’t just smell sweet, it has a kind of optimism to it. A sense of possibility. Like the night is young, your skin looks fantastic and anything could happen.

That tension between sweetness, skin and something slightly improper is exactly what makes peach such a compelling note. These are the scents I own that capture it best.

I have been thinking about this for weeks now, six to be specific, in the quiet spaces between everything else.

When we are at our most untethered is often when we need our anchors most. The routines and rituals that give us some semblance of normality, control and structure. The things that help us return to ourselves. For many of us, beauty is tied up in that more deeply than we sometimes care to admit.

Beauty is not just personal for me; it is also my work. Testing products, thinking about rituals, noticing what beauty does and does not do for us is part of how I move through the world. The skin-to-skin moment of applying moisturiser at the end of the day. A five-minute shower that helps you begin again. A fragrance that shifts your mood, energy and sense of self.

But grief complicates all of that.

Sometimes the void is so deep that even the rituals that once held you begin to feel unreachable. The very thought of washing your hair, cleansing your face, or doing the so-called everything shower feels less like care and more like an impossible demand.

The first thing I did was wash and straighten my hair. I love my curly hair, but it requires daily refreshing with water and styling products. Having it straight meant I would look and, for me, also feel semi-normal, even on the days I did not have the strength nor energy to shower. It was not about vanity, it was about reducing the number of things I had to manage. One less demand. One small act of foresight from a version of me who still had capacity, for the version of me who suddenly did not.

I have not had my nails done in over six weeks. As a nail-biter since childhood, having my nails done keeps me from gnawing at my hands. I picked the gels off first and then a few days later temptation, sharpened by stress, got the better of me. My long nails were reduced to stumps.

During my Space NK x Kosas campaign video, I was wearing £8 press-ons. At dinner last week with my management team, I felt mildly self-conscious that my hands were not manicured as normal, not that I suspect anyone noticed or remotely cared. I remember as a teenager, getting my nails done was a treat saved for special occasions. As I have gotten older, nails have become part of my non-negotiable maintenance. I love how a fresh manicure looks, but grief made me question my attachment to it. If getting my nails done makes me feel polished and put together, what am I saying about myself when they are not done? That I am neither of those things?

That question stayed with me.

I also unintentionally avoided my true love, fragrance. I wasn’t really doing anything beyond being at home or at my mum’s, so I stopped reaching for it. But when I started going outside again, I turned to peach.

I don’t think it was an intentional choice, at least not at first. Peach has always felt nostalgic to me. It takes me back to a holiday with my mum when I was seven or eight and drank peach iced tea for the first time. Peach smells like endless days by the beach or pool, sunshine on skin, and being with my mum. There is something almost childlike in it. Bright, comforting, soft. A kind of emotional shorthand for safety.

And then came the question of a fragrance fit for a funeral. A cremation ceremony, to be precise.

I packed an overnight bag because I was staying at my mum’s the night before. Unlike choosing outfits, which I despise, I normally relish choosing which scents to pack for a trip or an event. But standing in front of my collection that evening, I hesitated. I wondered whether it was even wise to wear a fragrance at all, for fear it would forever become tied to that day.

But then I thought of my uncle and his attitude to death was always that it should be a celebration of life. And I would certainly wear fragrance if I were marking a less sorrowful occasion.

This was not a day for anything too sweet, too pretty or too coquettish. Nothing that smelled like a sexy Parisian bakery. I chose Voyeur Verde by Maya Njie. Earthy, herbaceous, grounding. A fragrance that felt steady underfoot.

In the days afterwards, I remembered that Maya uses photographs as inspiration for her perfumes, and that the image behind Voyeur Verde is “a faded Mercedes has been abandoned to nature’s elements.”

A car, once gleaming, swallowed slowly by green. Moss in the seams. Leaves filling the footwell. The slow, patient work of the elements taking back what was theirs.

There is something about that image that feels inseparable from death to me now. The quiet fact of it. The return and the inevitability that we all, in the end, go back to the elements.

I had not chosen the fragrance for that reason. But it was strange to find, days later, that I had unknowingly worn the smell of returning, on the day someone I loved returned.

What grief has reminded me is that the beauty rituals we build in our well-resourced moments are not vanity. They are infrastructure. They are the scaffolding you can still climb when the rest of you has gone quiet. Beauty isn’t vanity, it’s continuity.

There is an unspoken argument for beauty as a practice rather than a performance. Not the polished version we are so often sold - the before and after, the transformation, the glow - but the slower, less photogenic truth underneath it. That taking care of yourself when you have the capacity to, becomes a way of building habits that might one day hold you when you do not.

Grief did not make beauty feel frivolous to me. If anything, it clarified what it is really for.

At its most meaningful, a beauty routine is not about becoming. It is about returning. Returning to your body and to your senses. Returning, however slowly, to yourself.

At its best, beauty is not perfection, nor performance. It is comfort, care and reconnection. Sometimes it looks like straightened hair because you cannot face the labour of curly upkeep. Sometimes it looks like press-on nails and a quiet reckoning with how much of your womanhood you have tied to looking polished. Sometimes it is no routine at all, just the humility of accepting that survival has to be enough for now.

That is the unspoken truth of beauty rituals. The best ones are not there simply to make us look more presentable. They are there to help make us feel more present.

Beauty isn’t always transformation. Sometimes it is remembrance. Sometimes it is the smallest available act of care in a season where care feels otherwise out of reach.

And sometimes, when everything in you has gone missing for a while, it is one of the ways you find your way back.

What I know for certain is that I don’t want to smell like a juvenile vanilla cupcake. I want to smell like a sexy bitch.

Smelling sexy isn’t about sex, in the same way being youthful isn’t exclusively tied to being young. It’s an energy, not a body count. I am the perfect example of this. I am extremely single and definitely spending Valentine’s Day alone; the last man to see my vagina was a gynaecologist — or so we can only hope — removing my Mirena coil last month.

And yet, when I walk past a mirror after I’ve layered my perfume, I don’t think, “oh, poor lonely girl”. I think, “this is a woman who knows exactly who she is, with or without an audience.”

That’s what I mean by “sexy bitch” fragrance. Not something so sugary it makes you smell like you’ve been gift-wrapped for the male gaze, but something with bite marks. Skin, woods, spice, smoke, expensive florals. Scents that feel like they belong to a woman who has a rich life, not just an office crush. A woman who might be going home to a lover, or might be going home to a one-hour bath, eating pasta in bed, and having the best sleep of her life.

So consider this a love letter to that energy with my curation of ten fragrances that don’t smell like a sub-par dessert but a woman who knows her own power.

If your hobbies include bakery classes and making bad decisions in five-star hotels, this is for you. Pistachio, vanilla and tonka give you that creamy warmth of a bakery, but then there’s tobacco and leather running through it, so it never veers into cupcake. It’s less “I made cookies for the boys” and more “I own the bakery and I’m closing early.” Soft and sniffable, with a little kink in there.

Lancôme – Idôle Power

The plot twist. I got this in a gift bag and swiftly put it on my “friends and family” pile because I’m a fragrance snob and judged it at face value. I was wrong. This is deep rose and sandalwood with backbone. Creamy, a little fruity, but never fluffy. It almost leans a bit “grandma”, in that I can imagine an old Hollywood actress wearing it. I spray this on my bedsheets.

Grown-up cherry — the dark cherry in a cocktail you probably shouldn’t be drinking on a Tuesday night. It’s fruity but wrapped in spice, chocolate, almond, a little brown sugar. This is for when you want to smell edible in a dangerous way, like you might send the risky text and then change your mind and go home alone anyway.

Plush, enveloping and a little hedonistic. Warm vanilla, saffron and woods, Babylon is sensual without trying. The kind of scent people notice when they lean in to tell you a secret. My personal favourite from Penhaligon’s, and for those that want an escape from Halfeti.

Born To Stand Out – Sex & Cognac

The clue is in the name. Boozy leather and skin. This isn’t cutesy, polite or trying to be liked. It’s assuming attraction and getting on with its night. With saffron, oud and cognac, it’s like the inside of a dim bar where everyone’s speaking too close and the lighting is doing you favours. I’d wear this when I want to remind myself I’m allowed to be a little too much.

Histoires de Parfums – 1969

Peach, chocolate and patchouli make it sound like dessert, but on the skin it’s far more suggestive. 1969 is a sticky, spicy, sun-warmed scandal. The kind of scent that feels slightly indecent on a Monday morning and absolutely perfect on a summer night. This is “I have secrets and none of them are your business” in fragrance form. My longest-lasting relationship is with this one.

Chanel – Allure Sensuelle

This is a bold statement, but this is my favourite Chanel fragrance — even over the Les Exclusifs. Classic sexy. Ambery, floral, slightly spicy, there’s a lot going on but all blended beautifully. This isn’t loud compared to the others, but it clings to skin in a very memorable way. It’s the scent for the woman who leaves parties early because she has somewhere better to be.

Tom Ford – Noir Extreme

Technically made for men, which is exactly why it smells so good on a woman. Cardamom, kulfi, amber, woods, but with sweetness. It’s rich, spiced, and a little bit indecent, like you’ve borrowed a jumper from someone you probably shouldn’t be seeing and never given it back. The opposite of a “clean girl” scent, it’s indulgent and textured.

You’re sat in a worn-in leather chair, sipping a strong coffee just after lighting your incense. That’s the mood. Coffee, leather, vetiver and smoke curling together in a way that feels almost private, like a habit you don’t explain to anyone. Dark, resinous, a bit smoky, a bit sticky, it assumes the right people will lean in. Perfect for when you’d rather feel enigmatic than approachable.

This is what happens when your favourite teen perfume grows up, moves abroad and starts wearing a custom leather jacket. Tart passionfruit wrapped around smoky oud, saffron and rose creates something juicy and bright on top, and a bit dangerous underneath. It shouldn’t work, but it does. Fruity but not silly, the kind of scent that makes people stop you to ask what you’re wearing.

I’m here to remind you. You do not need a rebrand.

In fact, I can’t think of anything worse for you.

You are not a brand

First and foremost, you are not a brand.

You are a human, a soul, a collection of energetic cells that happen to take your particular shape. You are histories, heartache, tiny miracles, bad decisions, second chances and experiences that have carried you through every version of your life so far.

And if - if - you were a brand, you’d be a luxury one.

What you have is innately valuable. You’re alive. You’re here. If you’re reading this, you’re also likely relatively resourced and privileged in at least a few ways. That alone is a certain kind of abundance.

Luxury brands don’t rebrand every January. They don’t need to. We don’t see Hermès or Loro Piana pivoting each year in a frantic attempt to hit their goals. They refine, deepen, and recommit to what they’ve always been about.

So why are you trying to burn everything down and start again every time the calendar resets?

What a rebrand really is (from someone who does them professionally)

A rebrand sounds sexy because yet another piece of corporate waffle has quietly crept into our self-help lexicon.

“I’m rebranding.”
“I’m pivoting.”
“I’m reinventing myself.”

Part of my real-life job is consulting on rebrands for businesses. And the reality is, we very rarely change everything or start from scratch.

Most of the time, a rebrand is not a full demolition. It’s an excavation.

We go back to the original story, the original values, the real reason the brand existed in the first place, and we look at where that essence got diluted, distracted, or buried under trends and growth targets. It’s not “who do we become next?” but “how did we drift so far from who we really are?”

A rebrand done well is a reconnection. It’s a remembering.

And that’s what you’re actually craving.

It’s not an accident that your feed is full of reinventions. The algorithm loves extremes. It rewards shock, speed and before and afters.

A rebrand photographs well. It’s easy to package into a hook, a trending sound, a tidy narrative arc. “New era” content performs better than, “I’m mostly the same, just a bit more honest with myself and slightly less available to chaos.”

Reconnection, on the other hand, is quiet. It’s not always aesthetic. It looks like going to bed earlier, saying no more often, and telling the truth in group chats. It doesn’t make for a dramatic montage.

So the internet keeps selling you reinvention, because reinvention is clickable. And when your nervous system can’t keep up with these constant, cinematic “new selves,” you assume the problem is you.

It isn’t.

You were never meant to rebrand your entire identity on a weekly content schedule. You were meant to keep deepening into who you already are.

You don’t need a rebrand. You need a reconnection.

What you’re longing for isn’t a whole new you.

It’s a realignment with the version of you that has always been there, the one who felt clear, rooted and a little less apologetic.

The one who hasn’t forgotten what matters. The one who isn’t performing all the time. The one who knows, in her bones, that she is enough to stand firmly in her power.

Trust = doing things differently without guarantees

You have to trust that doing things differently might actually lead to a more positive outcome.

Like any investment, be it financial, emotional or spiritual, there are no guarantees that your dream life is waiting for you with open arms. There is no contract that says, “if you wake up at 5am and drink green juice, everything will be fine”. There are no promises. And that’s uncomfortable.

But what you do know is that the way you’ve done things until now has carried you to this point. Maybe your current reality isn’t exactly where you want to be, but it still deserves credit.

You have survived every single one of your worst days.

You’ve navigated things your past self didn’t believe she could.

You have data that doing things this way has created this life. If you want a different one, you have to trust that showing up differently, even in small ways, will eventually create different outcomes.

Why it feels so exhausting

Here’s the part most “rebrand your life” content ignores.

Doing things differently is bloody tiring.

Anything that challenges our routines and long-adopted patterns of behaviour is interpreted as a threat by the brain. Your system doesn’t care if this new habit is good for you, it cares that it’s different.

You’re not exhausted because you’re lazy or “not cut out” for the life you want.
You’re exhausted because your brain and body are having very normal physiological and psychological responses to stepping outside your comfort zone.

Building new or stronger neural pathways requires effort. There’s friction. There’s resistance. There’s the part of you that would really like to crawl back into what’s familiar - not because it’s better, but because it’s known.

Which is where we meet the second piece - devotion.

From discipline to devotion

I’ve never loved the word discipline. It smells like punishment.

Discipline is often about rules and punishment. Do this, don’t do that. You are “good” if you comply and “bad” if you don’t. It’s rigid. It’s joyless. It frames you as something that needs controlling.

Devotion is loyalty, love and care for someone or something. “I care about this so much, I’m willing to keep returning to it.”

Devotion is loyalty and love in motion. It’s showing up for your goals and for yourself from a place of care, not fear.

You already know this feeling. You’re devoted to the people you love. You show up for your friends, your family, your work, your ideas.

Devotion is to keep showing up for yourself, not because you are flawed and need fixing, but because you are worthy of care, attention and effort. The real edge is allowing yourself to become someone you are devoted to and accepting your own love.

Committing to your own evolution from a place of love is infinitely more sustainable than trying to whip yourself into a new identity every January.

Start with an audit, not an overhaul

In any good professional rebrand, we start with an audit.

We don’t insert a new logo and hope for the best. We look at what’s already there. What’s working. What’s misaligned. What’s quietly brilliant but underused.
