Whole categories of words follow fixed patterns

Der, die, or das?

Most German learners are taught to memorise the article together with every noun:

der Beruf
die Flasche
das Hotel

And yes, sometimes you have to.

But here’s the bigger secret:

German gender isn’t only a property of individual words. Whole categories of words often follow the same gender pattern.

Professions.
Alcoholic drinks.
Ships.
Hotels.
Infinitives used as nouns.
Days.
Months.
Seasons.
Many types of names.

Once you start recognising these categories, German gender becomes much less like a guessing game.

Let’s look at some of the most useful ones.

Professions: a built-in gender pattern

German professions give you one of the clearest examples.

The traditional masculine form is der:

der Lehrer
der Arzt
der Ingenieur
der Fahrer
der Professor

For feminine professions, German very often adds -in:

die Lehrerin
die Ärztin
die Ingenieurin
die Fahrerin
die Professorin

So when you see:

-in → DIE

you already have a powerful clue.

And this is much more useful than memorising Lehrerin = die as an isolated fact.

Learn the pattern once, and it helps with hundreds of professions.

Alcoholic drinks: usually DER

Here’s a category that surprises many learners and makes them smile.

The names of many alcoholic drinks are masculine:

der Wein
der Whisky
der Sekt
der Schnaps
der Rum
der Wodka
der Gin
der Likör

So when you’re talking about a drink, der is often your best first prediction.

Many alcoholic drinks → DER

There is, however, a famous exception:

das Bier

So don’t turn a useful pattern into a rigid law.

The point is not:

“Every alcoholic drink must be der.”

The point is:

“This category gives me a strong prediction before I memorise the word.”

That’s exactly the kind of shortcut German learners need.

Ships: DIE

Now for one of the strangest-looking patterns.

German ship names are traditionally feminine.

So:

die Titanic
die Bismarck
die Gorch Fock
die Queen Mary

Even when the ship’s name itself doesn’t look remotely feminine, German treats the ship as die.

Ship names → DIE

Think of it as a category rule.

You don’t need to ask:

“Why is Titanic feminine?”

You can simply think:

Ship? → die.

That’s the kind of automatic association we’re trying to build.

Hotels: DAS

Here’s another useful category.

Hotel names are commonly treated as neuter:

das Hilton
das Ritz
das Adlon

Why?

Because you’re effectively dealing with the name of a hotel, and Hotel itself is neuter:

das Hotel

So when someone says:

Wir übernachten im Hilton.

the underlying idea is:

im [Hotel] Hilton.

Hotel names → usually DAS

This is especially useful when you’re dealing with famous names that don’t look German at all.

Infinitives used as nouns: DAS

This is one of my favourite German gender rules.

Take a German verb:

essen = to eat

Turn it into a noun:

das Essen = eating / the meal

Or:

schwimmen → das Schwimmen

lesen → das Lesen

reisen → das Reisen

lernen → das Lernen

rauchen → das Rauchen

The rule is wonderfully simple:

Nominalised infinitive → DAS

So if you see a German word beginning with a capital letter that looks like an infinitive, your first thought should be:

das

This is not something you need to memorise word by word.

You can see the grammar inside the word.

Here’s another entire group.

Days

der Montag
der Dienstag
der Mittwoch
der Donnerstag
der Freitag
der Samstag
der Sonntag

Months

der Januar
der Februar
der März
der April
der Mai
der Juni
der Juli
der August
der September
der Oktober
der November
der Dezember

Seasons

der Frühling
der Sommer
der Herbst
der Winter

So you can remember one very useful category:

Days + months + seasons → DER

Instead of learning 16 separate genders, you’ve learned one pattern.

Compass directions: DER

Another whole category:

der Norden
der Süden
der Osten
der Westen

And:

der Nordosten
der Südwesten
der Nordwesten
der Südosten

So:

Compass directions → DER

Again, one rule unlocks a whole group of nouns.

What about trees, fruits and flowers?

Trees are a good reminder that categories can be useful without being absolute.

Some very common tree names are feminine:

die Eiche
die Birke
die Buche
die Linde
die Tanne
die Fichte

But others are masculine:

der Ahorn
der Baum
der Apfelbaum
der Birnbaum

So you shouldn’t learn:

“Trees = DIE.”

That would be too broad.

Instead, look for patterns inside the category.

For example, many tree names ending in -e are feminine:

-e → often DIE

And -baum compounds are masculine:

-baum → DER

That’s a much safer and more powerful way to think.

It’s similar for flowers and fruits. Can you name a couple of fruits and flowers in the comments and see how many are female? You’d b surprised! I’ll start

die Tulpe
die Rose
die Apfelsine
die Birne
die Banane

This is the real skill: category recognition

Notice what just happened.

You didn’t learn:

die Titanic
das Hilton
das Schwimmen
der Montag
der Wein

as five completely unrelated facts.

You learned:

Ships → DIE
Hotels → DAS
Nominalised infinitives → DAS
Days → DER
Many alcoholic drinks → DER

That’s a completely different way of learning German.

You’re no longer asking:

“What article does this word have?”

You’re asking:

“What kind of word is this?”

And that question is often much easier to answer.

The bigger picture

German gender has several layers of clues.

Sometimes the clue is the ending:

-ung → DIE
-heit → DIE
-chen → DAS
-ling → DER

Sometimes it’s the meaning or category:

days → DER
months → DER
seasons → DER
ships → DIE
nominalised infinitives → DAS

And sometimes several clues work together.

That’s why memorising every noun individually is such an inefficient strategy.

Don’t just memorise the noun. Learn what kind of noun it is.

German gender becomes easier when you stop treating words as isolated

Imagine meeting a new German word.

Instead of immediately thinking:

“Oh no. Is it der, die or das?”

pause for one second.

Ask:

What is it?

A noun with a recognisable ending?
A day?
A profession?
A ship?
A hotel?
A nominalised verb?
An alcoholic drink?

You may already have your answer.

That’s the habit I want German learners to develop.

Don’t guess randomly. Predict intelligently.

And the more categories you know, the more often German gives you the answer before you’ve even memorised the word.

Der, die, or das?

For German learners, noun gender can feel completely random.

Why is it der Tisch, but die Tür?
Why is it das Fenster, but die Zeitung?

You could memorise thousands of nouns and their article individually.

Or you could learn a much better shortcut:

The ending of a German noun often tells you its gender.

And some endings are so reliable that they’re worth learning before you learn hundreds of individual words.

Here are the highest-value ones.

Recognise the Right Gender of a German Word

-ung → DIE

This is one of the best gender rules in German.

Words ending in -ung are feminine. Always.

die Zeitung
die Wohnung
die Rechnung
die Entscheidung
die Bedeutung
die Einladung

So if you see a new word ending in -ung, you can confidently think:

-ung = die

No need to guess.

-heit → DIE

Another extremely reliable feminine ending:

-heit → die

die Freiheit
die Gesundheit
die Möglichkeit
die Wahrheit
die Schönheit

Think of English words ending in -ness:

freedom, health, beauty…

German often packages similar ideas with -heit — and they’re feminine. 100% of the time.

-heit = die

-keit → DIE

And its close cousin:

-keit → die

die Wirklichkeit
die Schwierigkeit
die Geschwindigkeit
die Freundlichkeit
die Wichtigkeit

And you guessed it: if it ends on -keit it’s always female.

-schaft → DIE

Another high-value ending:

-schaft → die

die Freundschaft
die Gesellschaft
die Mannschaft
die Wissenschaft
die Landschaft

So:

-schaft = DIE

Notice a pattern?

German loves feminine abstract nouns.

This gives you a powerful little quartet:

-ung = DIE
-heit = DIE
-keit = DIE
-schaft = DIE

If you remember nothing else from this article, remember those four.

-chen → DAS

Now let’s switch to neuter.

Words ending in -chen are always neuter.

das Mädchen
das Häuschen
das Brötchen
das Hündchen

Why?

Because -chen is a diminutive ending: it makes something smaller or cuter.

Mädchen literally contains the diminutive ending -chen.

So despite Mädchen referring to a female person:

das Mädchen

The ending wins.

-chen = DAS

-lein → DAS

The other classic diminutive:

-lein → das

das Büchlein
das Häuslein
das Kindlein
das Fräulein

So the rule is wonderfully simple:

-chen and -lein = DAS

Even when the noun refers to a person. Every time.

-ment → DAS

This one is particularly useful if you know English, French, or other European languages.

Many German nouns ending in -ment are neuter:

das Instrument
das Dokument
das Apartment
das Medikament
das Experiment

So:

-ment = DAS

That’s a surprisingly useful shortcut.

What about the masculine endings?

Yes — German has some powerful DER endings too. These are just as reliable as the ones I mentioned before: there are no exceptions!

-ling → DER

der Schmetterling
der Lehrling
der Flüchtling

-ling = DER

-ismus → DER

der Tourismus
der Kapitalismus
der Realismus
der Kommunismus

-ismus = DER

-or → DER

der Motor
der Professor
der Doktor
der Autor

-or = DER

The secret: learn the high-value endings first

You don’t need 50 complicated gender rules. Or 10.000 Anki cards.

Start with the endings that give you the biggest return for your effort:

female (die)

-ung

-heit

-keit

-schaft

neuter (das)

-chen

-lein

-ment

male (der)

-ling

-ismus
-or

That’s already a powerful toolkit.

And here’s the bigger idea:

Don’t memorise German nouns as isolated words. Look for patterns.

Instead of learning:

Wohnung = die

learn:

-ung → die

Now Zeitung, Rechnung, Entscheidung, Bedeutung, Einladung and thousands of other words become simple.

But does this really work?

No gender rule covers every single German noun.

And that’s exactly why you need to distinguish between:

reliable rules
and
useful tendencies.

For example:

-ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft, -chen and the others mentioned above are wonderfully dependable.

Other endings are less absolute and need to be treated as tendencies rather than guarantees.

The goal isn’t to turn German into a set of rigid formulas.

The goal is to make your guessing dramatically better.

Because when you meet a new German noun, you shouldn’t be thinking:

“I have absolutely no idea.”

You should be thinking:

“Wait… what does it end in?”

That’s the skill.

German gender doesn’t have to be random

If you’ve ever spent hours memorising:

der Tisch, die Lampe, das Fenster…

only to forget the article a week later, you’re not alone.

But you can make the process much easier by learning gender patterns alongside vocabulary. The noun ending is just one of those patterns.

Do Germans Just Have More Exposure?

How many times have you learned der Tisch, only to forget it a week later? Or how often have you had to guess the right gender—or just mumble your way through it?

Have you ever wondered, “Am I the only student who doesn’t get it? Why do native speakers never hesitate?”

The problem isn’t your memory.

The problem isn’t that Germans have had years more exposure than you.

It’s the method.

The Myth Everyone Believes

Most learners are told to:

Learn every noun with its article.
Use flashcards or colour coding.
Repeat forever.
Accept that gender is “just random.”

This advice sounds logical.

But it asks your brain to remember tens of thousands of unrelated facts.

And I’ve never met a fellow German who has consciously done any of these things.

You might think that’s because we’ve heard German from the moment we opened our eyes. That we’ve heard the correct gender so often that we simply know it.

But that’s not actually how we know it.

Even for words we’ve never seen before, we often know the right gender instantly.

How is that even possible?

Let me tell you a secret.

Why Memorisation Fails—Every Time

Our brains don’t like isolated information. Years of educational research have shown that we learn best by connecting new information to context and to knowledge we already have.

That’s why teachers no longer ask students to simply memorise everything by heart. Instead, they give us different exercises that help build a network of knowledge.

Think of it as building a village.

If all the houses are isolated on separate hills, it’s difficult to travel from one to another. Some even disappear from view.

But if you build them close together and connect them with streets and little back alleys, suddenly it’s much easier to navigate and reach each one quickly.

That’s exactly how learning works.

When you learn this way, you’re working with your brain instead of against it.

Here are a few well-established concepts that explain why.

Chunking

Grouping individual pieces of information into larger, meaningful units makes them much easier to remember.

In German noun gender, this applies to categories that contain many words of the same gender. Weather vocabulary, for example, is often masculine:

der Regen
der Schnee
der Hagel
der Wind

Instead of learning four separate facts, your brain learns one category.

Schemas

Schemas are mental frameworks that help us organise and interpret new information.

Once you know that nouns ending in -ung are feminine, your brain automatically files every new -ung word into that existing framework.

Pattern Recognition

The brain loves spotting recurring patterns.

Rather than treating every noun as completely unique, you begin noticing clues such as endings, meanings, or word families that help predict grammatical gender.

Meaningful Associations

The stronger the connection, the easier the memory.

Instead of memorising a noun and its gender in isolation, you connect it to a familiar rule or category.

For example, if you know that many words ending in -e are feminine, you’ll guess correctly most of the time and only need to remember the relatively few exceptions.

When you learn this way, you set yourself up for success.

Patterns reduce mental effort. They reduce stress. And because you’re less afraid of making mistakes, you naturally become more confident when speaking.

Remembering 2,000 separate noun genders is hard.

Remembering 25 reliable patterns is much easier.

A Thought Experiment

Imagine I ask you to memorise these words:

die Blume (flower)
die Lilie (lily)
die Eiche (oak)
die Lampe (lamp)
die Liebe (love)
die Rose (rose)
die Hose (trousers)

...

Now imagine I simply tell you:

Many words ending in -e are feminine.
Many words describing plants are feminine.

One or two patterns suddenly replace hundreds of flashcards and hours of pointless repetition.

The Hidden Structure of German

Just like the rules above, there are many more patterns that make your life much easier.

These are the strategies native speakers use subconsciously to recognise the gender of a word—even before knowing what it means.

These are the cheat codes textbooks rarely teach you.

When recognising noun gender, you can rely on:

endings
word families
meaning
historical patterns
derivation

Once you understand and practise these patterns, you’ll stop guessing and start recognising.

Why Nobody Teaches It This Way

You may have come across cheat sheets online and wondered:

“Why doesn’t anyone teach German like this?”

One reason is that most German teachers are native speakers.

They don’t consciously rely on these patterns because they’ve internalised them since childhood.

Once you point them out, many teachers will say, “Oh yes, that makes sense.”

But they often don’t realise they’re using these shortcuts themselves.

And what about textbooks?

Some mention a handful of patterns.

But they’re rarely comprehensive, they’re often mentioned only in passing, and students almost never get enough practice using them.

Instead, textbooks prioritise vocabulary lists, repetition, grammar and communication exercises.

That’s perfectly reasonable.

But it leaves one enormous opportunity untapped.

If you learn these patterns, you’re already several steps ahead of most learners.

An Easy Pattern to Get You Started

Let’s look at one together.

Words ending in -heit are always feminine.

Think about words like:

Gesundheit
Freiheit
Schönheit
Einheit

You never have to wonder about their gender again.

It’s die.

Always.

Once you know the pattern, you’ve learned the gender of hundreds of words at once instead of one word at a time.

What Does This Look Like in Practice?

With my private students, I introduce these patterns early and keep returning to them throughout our lessons.

Eventually, recognising them becomes almost automatic—a bit like a Pavlovian response.

Of course, I can’t personally guide everyone who reads these articles.

But Aren’t There Exceptions?

Absolutely.

Every language has exceptions.

But if a pattern correctly predicts the gender of hundreds of nouns, it’s far more efficient than pretending every noun is completely unique.

This approach reduces stress and helps you speak and write with confidence.

You’ll make fewer mistakes—with less effort.

As my geography teacher used to say:

“Students are like rivers. They always take the easiest path.”

Be a river.

What Does This Mean for You?

German noun gender isn’t random.

It’s patterned.

The challenge isn’t memorising more words.

It’s learning to see the structure that was there all along.

After all, doesn’t it make more sense to spend your energy learning words that actually mean something instead of attaching der, die or das to every single one?

Let’s not make German harder than it needs to be.

What if I told you that you already know the gender of thousands of German nouns—even if you’ve never seen those words before?

It sounds impossible because German noun gender feels like one giant guessing game. But native speakers aren’t guessing. They are following patterns.

Everyone gets frustrated with German noun gender. Is it der, die or das? It often feels like a gamble. Words that are clearly female don’t get the article die. Why?

And that’s just one example. There are many more seemingly random ways that German assigns grammatical gender. But somehow native speakers never seem to struggle with it. If it were truly random, how do Germans always know the correct gender—even for words they’ve never seen before?

The answer is that there are patterns and strategies that we use subconsciously. We’re not trying to hide this information from you. It’s simply not obvious to us. There isn’t a school subject called “The Secret Ways to Know German Noun Gender.”

That’s why the advice “Always learn the article together with the noun” is well-intentioned, but ultimately unsustainable. It’s not even what native speakers do ourselves.

For the longest time I thought noun gender was random too. It turns out it’s actually much more predictable than most learners are led to believe. Let me show you.

How to turn a verb into a noun

You already use this system every time you say das Essen. You probably learned this word as vocabulary, but you were actually using a much bigger rule: infinitive verbs turned into nouns are always neuter.

Let’s look at some examples:

essen → das Essen
lesen → das Lesen
schlafen → das Schlafen
rauchen → das Rauchen
schwimmen → das Schwimmen
singen → das Singen

Did you notice? We didn’t actually change the word—we simply wrote it with a capital letter. That’s how simple it is.

A useful way to think about this as an English speaker is that these nouns usually correspond to the -ing form in English:

das Essen = the eating
das Lesen = the reading
das Schwimmen = the swimming
das Rauchen = the smoking

They describe the act or process of doing something, just like English -ing nouns.

So whenever you see a noun that looks like a verb, ask yourself:

Is it still in the infinitive form (usually ending in -en)?
Is it written with a capital letter, even though it isn’t at the beginning of the sentence?

If the answer is yes, you’ve found a nominalized verb.

And the best part?

You already know its gender.

It’s das.

Always.

No exceptions.

How to turn an adjective into a noun

Adjectives work in a similar way. See if you can spot the pattern.

alt → der Alte / die Alte
schön → der Schöne / die Schöne
neu → der Neue / die Neue
reich → der Reiche / die Reiche
arm → der Arme / die Arme

Again, the adjective is capitalized and an -e is added.

You may also have noticed that I didn’t choose between masculine and feminine. That’s because when a nominalized adjective refers to a person, it simply takes that person’s gender.

Die Reiche refers to a rich woman.

Der Reiche refers to a rich man.

But what happens when the adjective refers to an abstract idea instead of a person?

gut → das Gute
schlecht → das Schlechte
neu → das Neue
wichtig → das Wichtige

The pattern stays exactly the same: capital letter, an extra -e, and...

...they’re all neuter.

Again, no exceptions.

This also works with comparative and superlative forms:

gut → das Gute
besser → das Bessere
best → das Beste

Another way to turn verbs into nouns

Take the verb verändern.

We can say:

das Verändern = the changing (the act of changing)
die Veränderung = the change (the result or a change itself)

The same distinction appears with other verbs:

das Bewegen = the moving
die Bewegung = the movement

So while das + infinitive usually refers to the action or process (often translated with English -ing), nouns ending in -ung are separate nouns with their own meaning. They often describe the result, event or concept rather than simply the action itself.

As we’ve already learned in another article, nouns ending in -ung are always feminine.

verändern → die Veränderung
entwickeln → die Entwicklung
bezahlen → die Bezahlung
bewegen → die Bewegung

One word family, many nouns

A single root word can generate an entire family of nouns.

Take lesen:

lesen
↓
das Lesen (reading)
↓
der Leser (male reader)
↓
die Leserin (female reader)
↓
die Lesung (a reading, for example an author reading from their book)

Now try this one yourself.

entwickeln
↓
? Entwickeln (developing)
↓
? Entwicklung (development)
↓
? Entwickler (male developer)
↓
? Entwicklerin (female developer)

If you’ve understood the patterns, you should already know every article.

Your takeaway

For a list like this, you no longer have to memorize the gender of every word individually.

? Essen
? Lesen
? Veränderung
? Entwicklung
? Leser
? Leserin

German noun formation cheat sheet

Verb → das

lesen → das Lesen

Verb + -ung → die

entwickeln → die Entwicklung

Person doing an action → der/die

So now you tell me the correct article for each of those words.

Even if you’ve never seen them before, you already know.

German isn’t difficult because there are too many nouns.

It’s difficult because most people are taught to memorize the results instead of understanding the process.

German Isn’t Random

German isn’t random—it has rules that most textbooks never teach.

Word formation is just one of dozens of reliable patterns that make German articles much easier to predict. Once you start recognising these patterns, you’ll spend far less time memorising vocabulary lists and far more time using German with confidence.

Why is das Mädchen neuter when a girl is obviously female?

If you’ve ever wondered whether German grammar was invented just to confuse learners, you’re not alone.

The answer is actually surprisingly logical—and once you understand it, you’ll have learned one of the most powerful gender rules in German.

One of the first things you'll learn about German is that it has three grammatical genders: der, die, das

At first, this seems simple. You might assume that:

der = male
die = female
das = everything else

Unfortunately, German isn't quite that simple.

When natural gender matches grammatical gender

For people and many animals, grammatical gender usually reflects natural gender.

die

die Mutter (mother)
die Tochter (daughter)
die Katze (female cat)

der

der Vater (father)
der Sohn (son)
der Kater (tomcat)

das

das Kind (child)

So far, so good.

“Das” is not the Catch-All category

Many learners assume that every inanimate object is neuter.

That’s not true at all.

In fact, neuter is the smallest gender category in German.

Here are just a few examples:

der

der Stuhl (chair)

As you can see, plenty of everyday objects are masculine or feminine.

Then Why Is das Mädchen Neuter?

Now things become even stranger.

Some nouns clearly refer to female people, yet they take the neuter article.

das Mädchen (girl)
das Fräulein (young lady / Miss - now considered old-fashioned)

How can that be?

The secret lies in the ending

This is probably the question every German learner asks sooner or later:

“How am I supposed to know the gender of a noun?”

The advice you often hear is:

“Just learn the article together with every noun.”

While this works, it’s also incredibly inefficient.

Native German speakers don’t memorise every noun one by one. Without even realising it, we've unconsciously learned to recognise patterns..

One of the strongest patterns is the ending of a noun.

Certain noun endings reliably determine the gender of a word.

And one of the most powerful endings is...

Diminutives: -chen and -lein

Both Mädchen and Fräulein end in -chen or -lein.

These endings create diminutives. Mädchen originally meant “little maid” and comes from the older word die Magd. Because the diminutive ending -chen was added, the word became neuter. Fräulein is a diminutive of die Frau (the woman) and refers to an (un)married, young woman. It’s similar to the word “Miss” in English. Today, Fräulein is considered outdated and is generally avoided. Adult women are addressed as Frau, regardless of whether they are married.

A diminutive usually makes something:

smaller,
cuter,
or more affectionate.

Even more importantly:

Every noun ending in -chen or -lein is neuter. There are no exceptions. If you see -chen or -lein, you immediately know the article is das.

It doesn’t matter what gender the original word had.

die Katze > das Kätzchen
der Hund > das Hündchen
der Mann > das Männchen
die Maus > das Mäuschen
der Vogel > das Vögelchen
die Blume > das Blümchen
das Haus > das Häuschen
der Baum > das Bäumchen
der Bruder > das Brüderchen
die Schwester > das Schwesterchen

Many diminutives also add an Umlaut to the vowel when possible (a → ä, o → ö, u → ü), although not every word changes.
Notice how even words that were originally masculine or feminine immediately become das.

That’s why we say:

das Mädchen
das Fräulein

The ending decides the gender—not the person being described.

Remember

If a German noun ends in -chen or -lein, it is always neuter.

The ending determines the gender—not the meaning.

Could You Just Make Everything Neuter?

Technically...

Yes.

Practically...

Please don’t!

Imagine saying to your boss:

Hallo, Chefchen, darf ich heute früher gehen? Ich muss ins Krankenhäuschen.

“Hello, little boss. May I leave early today? I need to go to the tiny hospital.”

Grammatically correct?

Mostly.

Completely ridiculous?

Absolutely.

German speakers only use diminutives in certain situations. Some have become normal everyday words with no “big version”, like Mädchen or Kaninchen, while others sound affectionate, childish, humorous, or even sarcastic.

Learning when to use them is just as important as learning how they affect gender.

German Isn’t Random

If you’ve made it this far, you’ve already discovered one of the biggest secrets about German noun gender:

German isn’t random—it has rules that most textbooks never teach.

The ending -chen/-lein is just one of dozens of reliable patterns that make German articles much easier to predict. Once you start recognising these patterns, you’ll spend far less time memorising vocabulary lists and far more time using German with confidence.

One trick to know the gender of over 10,000 German words

Have you ever struggled with German noun genders?

Is it der, die or das Umgebung? Is it der, die or das Gesundheit? Is it der, die or das Dankbarkeit? Is it der, die or das Gesellschaft?

You can know the answer to all of these even if you’ve never seen those words before.

It’s not going to be revolutionary, but it’s going to help you out more than memorising 100 tables.

Every noun ending in the suffixes:

-heit
-keit
-ung
-schaft

is always feminine (die). Always. No exceptions.

Die Umgebung. Die Gesundheit. Die Dankbarkeit. Die Gesellschaft.

There are more than 10,000 words with the ending -ung alone, which makes it one of the most useful patterns to learn.

Where this ending comes from and why it’s useful

The ending -ung creates a noun from a verb. It has been used very productively to form new words and is still active today. Look at words like Digitalisierung, which is widely used in current political and technological discourse in German.

So can you change any verb into an -ung noun? Sadly, it’s not that simple. All -ung nouns derived from verbs tend to describe:

1. A process

entwickeln → die Entwicklung (“development”)
bewegen → die Bewegung (“movement”)

2. A result

entscheiden → die Entscheidung (“decision”)
lösen → die Lösung (“solution”)

3. An institution or concrete thing derived from the action

versichern → die Versicherung (“insurance” / “insurance company”)
wohnen → die Wohnung (“apartment”)

Why not every verb works

Some verbs naturally form -ung nouns:

verbessern → Verbesserung
erweitern → Erweiterung
befragen → Befragung

Others usually don’t. for example these forms don’t exist in standard German:

gehen → ~~Gehung~~
kommen → ~~Kommung~~
schlafen → ~~Schlafung~~

Instead, German already uses other nouns for these concepts:

der Gang
die Ankunft
der Schlaf

Historically, German developed multiple ways to form nouns, and -ung became especially productive with verbs describing actions, processes, transformations, and abstract changes.

A useful shortcut

If a verb has a separable or inseparable prefix, there’s a good chance an -ung noun exists:

verändern → Veränderung
verbessern → Verbesserung
erweitern → Erweiterung
beschreiben → Beschreibung
bewerben → Bewerbung
bezahlen → Bezahlung

This is why business German, government German, and academic German are full of -ung words.

A fun exercise

Try it yourself. Write the German noun in the comments:

entwickeln → ?
erweitern → ?
verbessern → ?
digitalisieren → ?

A little trick for Dutch speakers

If a Dutch word ends in -ing, the German translation often ends in -ung. This is a useful shortcut for both meaning and gender (you immediately know it is die).

The reason is that German and Dutch share the same linguistic roots. Let’s look at some examples:

omgeving → Umgebung (surroundings)
ontwikkeling → Entwicklung (development)
verandering → Veränderung (change)
verbetering → Verbesserung (improvement)
beslissing → Entscheidung (decision)
oplossing → Lösung (solution)
beweging → Bewegung (movement)
verzekering → Versicherung (insurance)
opleiding → Ausbildung (education/training)
uitbreiding → Erweiterung (expansion)

This is the way I like to teach grammar and difficult subjects in general. Tables are useful for overview, but expecting students to memorise them is unrealistic. Very few people will actually do that, and even fewer will retain it. We also don’t learn our native language this way.

Why Learning German Can Feel Like Losing a Part of Yourself

Learning a new language and then even moving to a new country at the same time changes more than just the words you use.

For many people, it changes the way they experience themselves.

This is something I’ve noticed again and again with learners living in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland.

In your native language, your personality feels effortless. You know how to express humor, intelligence, warmth, frustration, sarcasm, emotions, opinions, etc. You react quickly and feel socially competent.

Then suddenly, in German, all of that seems to disappear.

You search for words.
You simplify your thoughts.
You avoid certain conversations.
You become quieter.
Less spontaneous.
Less expressive.

And after some time, many learners start feeling something deeper than frustration with grammar.

They start feeling disconnected from themselves.

Especially highly articulate people often struggle emotionally with this stage because they are used to expressing nuance and complexity. Suddenly, they sound “basic.” Sometimes almost childlike.

And this creates a strange psychological tension:

Inside, you are still yourself.
Outside, you cannot fully show it yet.

Research in psycholinguistics actually supports this experience. Speaking a non-native language changes processing speed, emotional expression, social behavior, and even decision-making. Communication becomes less automatic because the brain operates under a much higher cognitive load.

In simple terms:

Your brain is busy surviving the language before it can fully express your personality through it.

That’s why many learners in Germany feel exhausted after social interactions in German, even if the conversation itself was relatively simple.

And interestingly, from my experience, one thing often makes this worse:

Constantly comparing your German-speaking self to your native-language self.

That comparison is brutal because your native language represents decades of automatisation, emotional depth, cultural understanding, humor, rhythm, and identity.

Of course your German version cannot compete with that immediately.

What helps much more is shifting the goal.

From:
“I want to sound exactly like myself in my native language.”

To:
“I want to slowly build a version of myself that can exist comfortably in German too.”

Learners who progress the most are usually not the ones obsessing over every mistake or trying to protect their ego.

They are the ones willing to tolerate temporary discomfort long enough for the language to become part of them.

And this only happens through experience.

Real conversations.
Repeated situations.
Moments of awkwardness.
Misunderstandings.
Small wins.

Again and again.

Over time, your brain starts creating emotional and social familiarity in the language. Certain phrases become automatic. Humor returns. Confidence returns. Your reactions become faster and more natural.

At some point, German stops feeling like a performance.

And starts feeling like another side of you.

How to choose the right language teacher

Sometimes I teach on an online platform, and when I match with a student, they often tell me:
“I’m sorry I can’t give you an answer immediately, I’m talking to other teachers as well.”

They feel embarrassed, while I think this is great.

Any teacher who has ever had to teach a student they didn’t click with will tell you that it isn’t fun. So please do check out different teachers to see who is a good fit for you. But chemistry is not the only thing you need to consider.

Your goals – what do you actually want to be able to do?

In every trial lesson, I ask my students about their goals. And often I see the “Bambi in the headlights” look in their eyes. They want to learn German, but haven’t thought about what would make them feel like they’ve actually achieved that goal.

Some students have a very clear idea because they want a job or want to move to Germany. They need to pass a German exam to achieve these goals. If that is something you need as well, look up which institutions offer those exams. Then search for the specific exam name and check whether your new teacher prepares students for it. For German, that might be the Goethe-Institut or TELC.

If you don’t need to pass an exam but just want to learn conversational German to speak with friends or family, that’s a different goal. You will probably not need to learn how to write essays, but rather how to send a message or hold a conversation. A teacher needs to understand and support this.

Trial lessons – how to tell if it’s a good fit

Trying different teachers is a great idea—but how do you actually evaluate a trial lesson?

A good trial lesson should give you clarity. Ask yourself:

Did the teacher ask about my goals and needs?
Did they adapt to my level quickly?
Did I get to speak, or did I mostly listen?
Did I leave the lesson knowing what I should work on?

You don’t need a “perfect” lesson—but you should feel that the teacher understands you and has a plan.

Your interests – what will keep you engaged?

You don’t want to be stuck in lessons about politics if you don’t really care about it. Be clear about which topics you want to explore or what hobbies you have. Tell your teacher which things bore you. A good teacher will choose engaging topics—but they need to know more about you to do that.

If you’re learning the language for work, be very clear about your role in the company and in which situations you need to use it. Do you pick up the phone, attend meetings, answer emails? Do you send offers or work on claims?

Your teacher doesn’t need experience in your exact field, but it helps if they do. Ask whether they’ve taught business students before and if they have materials to practise the tasks you need every day. I also often prepare templates with my students so they can fall back on standard, correct German.

Use of the target language – how much immersion do you want?

I personally prefer to use the target language as much as possible. Other teachers have different preferences. Think about your goals and what you feel comfortable with.

Do you want to speak quickly and confidently? Do you feel comfortable trying the new language, making mistakes, and learning from them?

If you’re not an absolute beginner, it’s a good idea to introduce yourself in the target language. Your teacher will already get a sense of your level. In my trial lessons, I usually start the conversation in English and then introduce myself again in German. This helps students feel more comfortable trying it themselves and also gives them an example of what I want to learn about them.

Here are some things you could include:

Your name
Where you live
Your family (partner, kids, pets…)
Other languages you speak and how well
Your job or studies
Your hobbies and interests

Do you struggle to decide between “der”, “die” and “das”?

One of the most common issues and the core of most problems with the German language is: the noun genders (male, female or neuter). This is why I have created the ultimate online course to master these once and for all:

Homework – will you actually do it?

I’ve found that homework is a great way for students to learn and progress faster. I see a clear difference between students who do it and those who don’t. So I always assign homework—but I never expect it to be done every time. Most of my students are working adults with busy lives. I understand if they don’t always have the capacity to write a few sentences in German.

Homework is also connected to what you do outside the classroom. It’s entirely up to you how fast you progress. The more you practise outside your lessons, the faster you will learn and retain the language.

Ask your teacher what tips they can give you for learning on your own. I have vocabulary flashcards on Knowt and many other materials that students can use for free in their own time.

But if you know that the hours with your teacher are the only time you can spend on German, it’s important to say that upfront. Tell them you want to practise a lot during lessons. This will ultimately cost more, because instead of spending time on new material, you’ll use lesson time for practice. But if time is more valuable than money to you, this is a great way to progress without homework.

If you choose this approach, I would strongly suggest having lessons at least once a week, if not more. This helps you optimise how much your brain retains. But more is not always better: your brain also needs rest to process what it has learned. So don’t book three-hour lessons every day of the week.

Teaching style – structure or flexibility?

Think about your learning style. What helped you at school? Did you need structure, or were you more chaotic? Did you learn by discussing topics or by working alone? How did you use to learn new words?

Some students want a structured lesson plan and to follow it step by step. Especially for beginner lessons, I highly recommend this. It helps you build a solid foundation.

Once you can communicate more freely, it’s useful to have less structured conversation practice. Because in real life, conditions won’t be controlled: people speak dialect, there’s background noise, sentences are unfinished or mumbled. Conversations move into areas you didn’t prepare for—that’s just how real communication works 😉

Feedback style – how do you want to be corrected?

How do you receive feedback best? Do you like to be interrupted and corrected immediately, or would you prefer to hear feedback at the end?

There’s no right answer, but there is a trade-off:

Frequent correction helps you improve accuracy faster
Less interruption helps you build confidence and fluency

I usually let my students finish their sentence before correcting them, but this depends on their goals.

Think about what matters more to you right now: building confidence or fixing specific mistakes. A good teacher can adjust—but only if you tell them.

Consistency, scheduling, and price – the practical side

A great teacher you can’t schedule regularly is not a great teacher for you.

Before committing, think about:

How often can you realistically take lessons?
Does the teacher’s schedule match yours?
What is their cancellation policy?

Consistency matters more than intensity. One lesson every week is often more effective than occasional long sessions.

Price is also part of the equation. More expensive doesn’t always mean better—but very low prices can limit how much time a teacher can invest in preparation and feedback. Think about what you’re paying for: not just the lesson itself, but the structure, materials, and support around it.

Final thought

The “perfect” teacher doesn’t exist—but the right teacher for you does.

Take your time, try a few lessons, and pay attention to how you feel during and after them. Do you feel understood? Challenged? Motivated?

That’s usually a good sign you’re in the right place.

German Is Not Pure — And Never Was

A language shaped by empire, class, trade routes—and the politics of who belongs

German has a reputation.

It is often imagined as precise, structured, and self-contained—a language somehow insulated from the outside world. In public debates, especially in German-speaking countries, you still hear concerns that English loanwords are “corrupting” or “diluting” the language. Words like downloaden, Meeting, or Team are framed as intrusions, as if German once existed in a pristine state now under threat.

But this idea collapses the moment you look at the history of the language.

German is not pure. It has never been pure. And more importantly: the very idea of a “pure language” is not linguistic—it is political nonsense

From “Peasant Tongue” to National Symbol

For much of the Middle Ages, German was not prestigious.

Latin dominated religion and scholarship. French dominated courts. German—really a patchwork of dialects—was widely seen as the language of ordinary people.

As Peter von Polenz shows, German only gradually developed into a standardized written language and long lacked the status of a “high” cultural medium.

This changed in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Thinkers like Johann Gottfried Herder argued that language expressed the soul of a people. A shared language became the basis for imagining a shared identity.

By the time of German unification in 1871, this idea had become politically powerful: Germany was imagined as a nation defined by language. Germany as the country of those who spoke German.

As Benedict Anderson later argued, nations are “imagined communities” built through shared language and communication (Anderson, 1983).

German, once dismissed as a peasant tongue, became a powerful unifying force.

A Language Built Through Contact

German belongs to the West Germanic language family. But its vocabulary reflects centuries of exchange.

Latin shaped religion and scholarship.
French shaped courtly life.
Italian shaped music and finance.
English shapes today’s global vocabulary.

And beyond Europe, influences from Arabic and other languages entered through trade and knowledge networks.

Words like:

Algebra
Alkohol
Ziffer
Kaffee
Zucker

are reminders that German is connected to global history—not isolated from it.

As Lyle Campbell notes, borrowing is a natural result of “cultural and scientific contact” (Campbell, 2013). It enriches a language.

The Invention of “Pure German”

If German has always been shaped by outside influences, where does the idea of purity come from?

The answer lies not in linguistics—but in politics.

From the 17th century onward, language societies attempted to “cleanse” German of foreign elements. These efforts intensified in the 19th century, alongside nationalism.

Language became a boundary marker.

To speak “proper German” was not just a linguistic claim—it was a cultural and political one.

As Joshua Fishman argues, language is deeply tied to identity and group belonging (Fishman, 1972).

And once language is tied to identity, it can be policed. It becomes a checkpoint.

Do you struggle to decide between “der”, “die” and “das”?

The Nazi Era: Language as Ideology

This connection between language and identity reached a dangerous extreme under the Nazi regime.

The Nazis did not simply promote German—they racialized it.

Language became part of a broader ideology that equated linguistic, cultural, and biological “purity.” The German language was framed as an expression of the so-called Volksgemeinschaft (people’s community), tied to notions of ethnic unity and exclusion.

At the same time, the regime was deeply contradictory.

On the one hand, it promoted the idea of a “pure” German culture. On the other, it freely used and tolerated many loanwords when convenient. The issue was never linguistic consistency—it was ideological symbolism.

As historian Victor Klemperer documented in LTI – Lingua Tertii Imperii, the Nazis reshaped language not by purifying vocabulary, but by manipulating meaning, repetition, and emotional charge (Klemperer, 1947).

“Words can be like tiny doses of arsenic… they are swallowed unnoticed.” (Klemperer)

The danger, in other words, was not foreign words.

It was the politicization of language itself.

Echoes in Modern Language Debates

Today’s debates about Anglicisms are, of course, not equivalent to Nazi ideology.

But they sometimes draw on similar underlying assumptions:

that language must be protected from outside influence
that linguistic change is decay
that “authentic” language reflects a bounded cultural identity

These ideas appear across the political spectrum—but they are especially prominent in nationalist and right-leaning discourses, where language is framed as something that must be defended against globalization or cultural “erosion.”

This is not accidental.

Because the idea of linguistic purity aligns closely with a broader worldview that emphasizes:

clear boundaries
cultural and “racial” homogeneity
resistance to external influence

In that sense, debates about words like Meeting or downloaden are never just about vocabulary.

They are about how people imagine culture itself:
as something open and evolving—or something fixed and under threat.

Why Linguistic Purism Fails

From a linguistic perspective, the idea of a pure language is simply wrong.

All languages:

borrow
evolve
adapt

German is no exception. It never has been.

From a historical perspective, the idea ignores reality.

German has always been shaped by:

empire
religion
trade
intellectual exchange

And from a political perspective, the idea can become problematic when it turns into exclusion.

Because once you start defining a “pure” language, it becomes easier to define “impure” speakers.

German as an Archive, Not a Fortress

German is not a closed system.

It is an archive.

Rome lives in Universität
France in Büro
Italy in musical language
England in Computer
the Arabic world in Algebra and Ziffer

Each word is a trace of contact.

Each layer tells a story.

To remove these influences would not restore German. It would erase its history and maim it

Closing Thought

German was once dismissed as a peasant language.

It later became the foundation of a nation.

It was politicized under one of the darkest regimes in history.

And today, it continues to evolve in a globalized world.

At no point in this history was it pure.

And the moment we start insisting that it should be, we are no longer talking about language.

We are talking about politics.

Why the difference between "darüber" and "über" matters

In a recent lesson a student said this sentence:

"Wir sprechen viel über einen Air Fryer zu kaufen”

I corrected him and said “Wir sprechen viel darüber einen Air Fryer zu kaufen”

He was confused about what the difference was between “über” and “darüber”

I tried to explain that you would translate it with “We talked a lot about buying an Air Fryer” or “We talked a lot about it to buy an Air Fryer” But I felt like my explanation was not sufficient. So I promised to come back in the next lesson with a good explanation.

And I want to share that explanation with you too! Because if you use these words wrongly, it might be a bit rude.

Über (preposition)

„Über“ (above, about) is a preposition. This means it usually comes directly before an object. It describes either a position (local) or a topic (causal).

local: Das Bild hängt über dem Sofa. (The picture hangs above the sofa)
causal: Wir sprechen über den Film. (We talked about the movie)
note: After „über“ there’s always a noun that it’s relating to: the target

Do you struggle to decide between “der”, “die” and “das”?

Darüber (Pronominal adverb)

“Darüber” is a so-called pronominal adverb. It is a combination of “da” (as a reference) and “über” (over, about). It is used to refer to an entire sentence or a previously mentioned thing without repeating it.

example: „Dort ist eine Brücke. Wir gehen darüber.“ (instead of: „Wir gehen über die Brücke“).
example: „Der Film war toll. Wir haben lange darüber gesprochen.“ (instead of: „Wir haben lange über den Film gesprochen“).
note: It usually stands alone, since the object is already known.

A small pitfall: People

When you talk about a person, you almost never use „darüber“. It would sound rude and as if you’re referring to them as a thing. What should you do instead? Use personal pronouns like “sie”, “ihn”, “uns”…!

correct: „Ich spreche über ihn.“ (nicht: „darüber“).
„Darüber“ is almost exclusively used for things, abstract concepts entire situations or previous sentences.

Why can’t I just say „über“?

To get back to our original sentences: why can’t I just say

“Wir sprechen viel über einen Air Fryer zu kaufen”

In German, you cannot place a preposition like “über” directly before a “zu” clause or a “dass” clause.

wrong: Wir sprechen viel über einen Air Fryer zu kaufen.
correct: Wir sprechen viel über den Kauf eines Air Fryers. (Here „über“ is a preposition before a noun: “Kauf”).
Richtig: Wir sprechen viel darüber, einen Air Fryer zu kaufen. (Here„darüber“ is the placeholder for the action that follows in the next sentence).

In summary

In our example sentence, “darüber” (about it) is a precursor (Vorausweiser). It prepares the listener for the fact that the topic of the conversation will only be mentioned in the following part of the sentence. Without the “da-” in “darüber,” the sentence would be grammatically awkward and wrong.

If you are learning German, you will eventually encounter a tiny word that seems simple at first but quickly becomes confusing: “doch.”

Many German learners ask the same question: What does “doch” actually mean? The difficulty is that “doch” does not have a single direct English translation. Instead, it changes meaning depending on the context, tone, and position in the sentence.

Yet once you understand it, “doch” becomes one of the most powerful tools in German conversation. It allows speakers to correct assumptions, soften statements, emphasize feelings, and express subtle disagreement—all with a single word.

1. “Doch” as a Response to a Negative Statement

This is the most famous use of “doch.” German uses it as a special word to contradict a negative statement or question.

English does not have a single equivalent. Instead, we usually say something like:

Yes, I do.
Actually, I did.
On the contrary.

Example

A:
Du hast heute keine Zeit.
You don’t have time today.

B:
Doch! Ich habe Zeit.
Yes I do! I have time.

The word “doch” directly contradicts the negative assumption.

Another example

A:
Du magst keinen Kaffee.
You don’t like coffee.

B:
Doch! Ich liebe Kaffee.
Actually, I do! I love coffee.

In English, we must repeat the verb or add extra words.
German solves the problem elegantly with one word: “doch.”

This is often the first situation learners encounter, and it already shows why “doch” is useful.

2. “Doch” as a Modal Particle (The Hard Part)

Now things get interesting.

In everyday German, “doch” often appears in the middle of a sentence. In this position it usually does not change the factual meaning of the sentence, but it changes the speaker’s attitude.

These words are called modal particles, and they are notoriously difficult for learners.

Why? Because they express subtle emotional context, not literal meaning.

Example

Ich habe dir doch gesagt, dass es funktioniert.

Literal translation:
I did tell you that it works.

But the feeling is closer to:

See? I told you it would work.

The speaker is reminding someone that the information was already known.

Another example

Komm doch rein!

Possible translations:

Come in!
Why don’t you come in?
Go ahead and come in.

The word “doch” softens the command and makes it more inviting.

Without it:

Komm rein!
Come in! (more direct)

With doch, the sentence sounds friendlier and more encouraging.

3. “Doch” to Express Surprise or Obviousness

Sometimes “doch” signals that something is obvious or contrary to expectations.

Example

Das ist doch klar!

Meaning:

That’s obvious!
Of course that’s clear!

Here, “doch” suggests the answer should already be known.

Example

Das ist doch interessant.

Possible meaning:

That’s actually interesting.

The speaker might have expected something boring, but reality is different.

4. “Doch” in Questions

“Doch” also appears in questions, often to express surprise or expectation.

Example

Du kommst doch morgen?

Meaning:

You’re coming tomorrow, right?

The speaker expects the answer to be yes.

Another example

Das hast du doch gesehen?

Meaning:

You did see that, didn’t you?

Again, the speaker assumes the answer is yes.

5. “Doch” to Encourage Someone

German speakers often use “doch” to gently encourage action.

Example

Probier doch mal!

Meaning:

Why don’t you try it?
Just give it a try!

Without doch, the sentence could sound more like a command.

With doch, it becomes friendly advice.

6. Why “Doch” Is So Hard for Learners

There are several reasons why this word confuses learners.

I. No direct English equivalent

English simply does not have a word that does everything “doch” does.

Instead we must use phrases like:

actually
after all
you know
yes I do
come on

German compresses these meanings into one flexible word.

II. It doesn’t change grammar

“Doch” usually does not affect sentence structure or tense.
Instead, it changes tone and intention, which is harder to notice when reading.

III. Native speakers use it constantly

Modal particles like doch, ja, mal, and halt appear everywhere in spoken German.

A learner might understand every vocabulary word in a sentence but still feel something is missing—because the social nuance is carried by these particles.

7. The Communication Power of “Doch”

Once learners become comfortable with it, “doch” becomes incredibly useful.

It allows speakers to:

contradict politely
remind someone of shared knowledge
soften commands
show friendly encouragement
express surprise
indicate expectations

In other words, “doch” helps make German sound natural and socially smooth.

Consider the difference:

Direct:

Mach das.
Do that.

With “doch”:

Mach das doch.
Why don’t you just do that?

The second version feels less aggressive and more conversational.

8. A Good Strategy for Learning “Doch”

Instead of trying to memorize a single translation, learners should focus on patterns of usage.

Pay attention to situations where German speakers:

contradict a negative statement
remind someone of something
soften instructions
encourage action

Over time, “doch” stops feeling mysterious and starts feeling natural.

Final Thought

“Doch” is a perfect example of how languages encode social meaning in tiny words.

It may be frustrating at first, but mastering it opens a new level of communication in German. Suddenly conversations become more expressive, more nuanced, and more authentically German.

Are Germans rude?

Many English speakers visiting Germany are surprised: Are Germans really rude? Why does it seem like no one says “please” in everyday conversation? To answer this, we need to look beyond surface words and explore both the subtle ways Germans express politeness and the cultural behaviors that sometimes confuse foreigners.

“Bitte” vs. “Please”

In English, “please” is a universal politeness marker:

Could you pass the salt, please?
Please sit down.

In German, the word bitte does exist, but it is used differently. While you might hear it when someone hands you something (Hier, bitte! – “Here you go!”), Germans often rely on other structures to show politeness. Saying bitte constantly, as an English speaker might, can even sound awkward or exaggerated.

The Subtlety of German Politeness

Germans often express politeness through sentence structure and mood, especially the Konjunktiv II (subjunctive II). This form is used to soften requests or make them more tentative:

Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen? – “Could you help me, please?”
Würden Sie mir das Salz reichen? – “Would you pass me the salt?”

Instead of relying on a single word like “please,” Germans adjust the verb mood to show respect or deference.

Du vs. Sie – The Politeness of Address

Another key difference from English is how Germans choose who to address formally or informally:

Du – informal “you,” used with friends, family, and children.
- Example: Kannst du mir das Salz geben? – “Can you give me the salt?”
Sie – formal “you,” used with strangers, colleagues, or in professional settings.
- Example: Könnten Sie mir das Salz geben? – “Could you give me the salt?”

Using Sie automatically makes your language more polite. Using du too early can seem overly familiar or even rude, while overusing Sie in casual situations can feel stiff.

How to know when to switch to du:

Wait for the other person to offer: Germans often explicitly say “Wir können uns duzen” (“We can use du”). The opposite of duzen is siezen. It is possible that the other person says “no” to this and that is their right! But it might be very awkward still…
Typically, only close colleagues, friends, or people of the same age group switch casually.
Never assume du based on age alone—this is a common fauxpas.

When I was in school and a student turned 18, it was common practice for teachers to ask them if they now wanted to be referred to by “Sie”. This was to show that they are now seen as adults by their teachers. But we had grown up with these teachers and usually declined.

Danke – Saying Thank You

In English, “thank you” is used very broadly: we thank people for small favors, purchases, and even polite gestures like holding a door.

In German, danke is also common, but its use is slightly more restrained and contextual:

Germans almost always say danke when someone does something for them directly, like handing them an item or offering help:
- Danke für das Buch! – “Thank you for the book!”
In some everyday interactions, especially in professional or transactional contexts, saying danke repeatedly can feel excessive. For example, in a busy store, one simple Danke after the cashier hands your receipt is perfectly sufficient.
To emphasize politeness, Germans may use “Vielen Dank” (“Many thanks”) or “Herzlichen Dank” (“Heartfelt thanks”).

Understanding the subtlety of danke helps to avoid sounding over-enthusiastic or insincere.

Examples of German Politeness Levels

Direct / casual request (informal, du):
- German: Gib mir das Salz.
- English: “Give me the salt.”
Polite request with bitte (informal, du):
- German: Gib mir bitte das Salz.
- English: “Give me the salt, please.”
Polite formal request (Konjunktiv II, Sie):
- German: Könnten Sie mir das Salz geben?
- English: “Could you give me the salt?”
Softened suggestion / indirect (Sie):
- German: Es wäre nett, wenn Sie mir das Salz geben könnten.
- English: “It would be nice if you could give me the salt.”
Tentative / cautious phrasing (Sie):
- German: Vielleicht könnten Sie mir das Salz reichen?
- English: “Perhaps you could pass me the salt?”
Very formal / extremely polite (Sie):
- German: Dürfte ich Sie bitten, mir das Salz zu geben?
- English: “May I ask you to give me the salt?”

Politeness in German is often expressed through mood, indirect phrasing, verb forms, choice of address, and appropriate use of thanks, rather than just one word.

Take care not to use the last version for anyone and everyone. This is very formal and might even come off as ssarcastic and rude if used in a casual setting.

Cultural Markers of Perceived “Rudeness”

Some behaviors that English speakers might interpret as rude are actually part of German cultural norms:

Reserved demeanor: Germans often don’t smile at strangers or engage in small talk. This is normal and not meant to be unfriendly.
Direct communication: Germans value clarity and honesty over vague politeness. They will tell you things as they are. This is a sign of respect.
Strict adherence to rules: Following schedules, traffic laws, and social regulations is considered polite; breaking rules is seen as disrespectful. This could be as small as crossing a red light (especially when children are around).
Customer service: Shops and restaurants tend to be goal-oriented rather than chatty. Staff may seem brusque but are focused on efficiency. This obviously depends on the sort of shop you’re at. Someone working at a parfume shop will be chattier than someone in a supermarket for instance.
Slow to warm up: Germans usually take time to build friendships. Initial interactions may feel formal or distant. They don’t hate you, they’re just getting to know you and judging if you’re a good fit as a friend.

Quick Tips for Politeness in German

Use bitte naturally – Don’t overuse it; it’s often just for handing things or formal requests.
Use Konjunktiv II for formal requests – Könnten Sie…, Würden Sie… make you sound polite without extra words.
Choose the right address: du vs. Sie – Wait for permission to switch to du; never assume familiarity too soon.
Use danke appropriately – Simple Danke works for most situations; Vielen Dank or Herzlichen Dank emphasize extra politeness.
Follow rules and schedules – Punctuality and law-abiding behavior are seen as respectful.
Respect reserved behavior – Don’t expect small talk or constant smiles with strangers.
Customer interactions – Be concise and goal-oriented; don’t expect overly chatty service.
Avoid fauxpas:
- Don’t be loud or chaotic in public.
- Don’t ignore formalities or social norms.
- Don’t overstep boundaries with physical space or familiarity.
Be patient with friendships – Germans take time to warm up; initial formality is normal.

Why I haven’t written for a while - and what you can learn from it

Have you ever felt bad that you didn’t do what you promised yourself you would do? Have you fallen short of your own expectations?

Usually at the start of the year, we’re full of energy and want to change. New year, new me and all that.

My new year hasn’t turned out that way.

Actually, it started last summer, when I had a long dry spell. No clients were coming in, and it felt uncertain whether I could continue working at the school where I teach part time. That anxiety — a natural phenomenon for freelancers — was still sitting in my bones when I started booking my future lessons.

So I said yes to everything I could grab.

What if there were no other projects?

Maybe I had done something wrong.

Maybe I had become lazy and been replaced.

What if, what if, what if…

I ended up filling my entire January and February with an insane number of lessons. In the middle of February Ramadan started, and I began fasting.

Ever since January I’ve had that hamster-wheel feeling — running from one appointment to the next.

I’ve already had a few emotional breakdowns over the past few weeks.

In my heart of hearts, I’m an introvert who craves quiet and solitude. But there has been next to no creative free time. No time to just be bored.

And I need boredom to be creative.

So I’m sad to say that Substack has fallen behind over the last few months. My strict schedule of writing and keeping up with engagement has completely disintegrated.

And the truth is: I’m not writing this from the other side of it.

I’m still right in the middle.

In the next two weeks Ramadan will come to a close, and I’m hosting a big Eid party for the first time. I’m nervous about it — and excited.

I think it’s important to remind myself — and maybe you as well — that sometimes things simply don’t go as planned.

Sometimes you fall right into a storm. And all you can do is finish the thing that’s right in front of your nose.

Meanwhile, you feel like you’re behind schedule all the time.

But it’s okay.

This will happen. And it will happen again. Just as it has happened before.

Beating yourself up about it doesn’t achieve anything. It doesn’t help you move forward, and it doesn’t teach you anything for the future.

In fact, it paralyses you.

You have to take things as they come, the way a bird takes the wind under its wings.

It doesn’t fight the wind.

It doesn’t scold itself when it makes a mistake.

It just flies.

And when it falls, it gets up again and flies away.

That part is crucial.

The getting up part.

Because that’s exactly where we tend to stand in our own way the most.

You haven’t broken anything.

You can always try again.

You can always go back and fix it.

Don’t tell yourself the story that it’s all lost now.

Just start again.

That’s where consistency actually comes from.

Talking all day, feeling alone

As a freelance language teacher, you spend most of your time in a room alone. “Alone” might not be the right word — you are talking to students all day. But you are providing a service. Your conversations exist for one purpose: learning a language.

With beginners, lessons are structured and repetitive. Once students move beyond the basics, they must learn to express opinions. That means I need to find topics they can react to. It can be fun — but the relationship is not equal.

If I push my own opinions too strongly, students may feel uncomfortable. They cannot respond as easily as they could in their mother tongue. If they feel judged or unsafe, the lesson fails.

This is not a discussion club. It is a language lesson.

We are not here to convince students. We are here to help them express themselves.

So when a student’s opinion differs from mine, curiosity is the best approach. Patience helps them find the words for what’s on their mind. This is speaking practice first and foremost — especially for A2–B1 learners.

From B2 onward, students can handle real debate. I can challenge them and ask them to defend their position. But even then, the goal remains the same: practise, analyse mistakes, and learn.

This also means I cannot be 100% myself. Sometimes I agree completely with a student, but that wouldn’t make for a good discussion. So I take the other side — just for the sake of the conversation.

And that can feel lonely.

You talk all day, yet you are not truly yourself.

Many self-employed people recognise this. You interact constantly, but not the way you would at the office coffee machine. There is no shared office gossip, no casual chatter, no spontaneous connection.

I love my job. But I missed that easy, human closeness.

As a joke, I once told my students they could share their office gossip with me. But it just doesn’t hit the same when Jessica is secretly dating Tom — because I’ve never met either of them.

Finding connection again

The solution arrived unexpectedly.

I started volunteering with VriendEnTaal (“Friend and Language”), a programme where people practise Dutch together for free two hours a week. Living in Belgium, where Dutch is one of the official languages, this feels especially meaningful.

Here, I am surrounded by volunteers and participants. The dynamic is different. It gives me the social interaction I was missing. My husband and I take turns going every week — sometimes one of us joins on a “free week” because it’s simply so enjoyable.

During one session, we talked about childhood memories. We noticed one participant’s eyes welling up with emotion. She couldn’t express what was going on, but I was glad we could be there for her. She hasn’t missed a session since.

Being in the same room with people — chatting, hosting, sharing space — has improved my mental health enormously. I feel more connected and more at home in my city.

This is my biggest recommendation: volunteer.

It doesn’t have to be language practice. Care homes, shelters, animal rescues — so many places need help. You can make a real difference.

My city does a lot to combat loneliness. There are board game days, knitting meet-ups, and low-cost soup, pasta, ice cream, and waffle days where people can gather.

Some attend because they are lonely. Others come simply because it’s fun. That mix creates an open, welcoming atmosphere.

And participation is flexible: you can talk, or not talk. You can connect, or simply sit among others. Sometimes being around people is enough.

So what’s stopping you from joining — or even starting — something like this?

What are you passionate about?
What do you shout from the rooftops about?
Which disappearing services make you feel sad or angry?

Volunteering can have enormous impact with relatively little effort. Imagine someone in a care home having a meaningful conversation after months of silence. Imagine a homeless person feeling seen and treated as human.

Now imagine how much good we lose when we only trade our time and skills for money.

What actually lasts

When someone writes my eulogy one day, they probably won’t say, “She was a great German teacher.” And even if they do, it won’t mean as much to me as this:

She helped me practise Dutch every week. I felt safe. I could be myself. I wasn’t lonely anymore. I integrated, found work, built a life… It changed everything.

This is what lasts.

Imagine if 50% of the people who could do this did it. Or 75%. Or all of us.

This is how the world changes.
This is how democracy and freedom are strengthened.
By getting involved. By showing up.

You are not separate from society.
You are society.
You are your city.
You are democracy.

And when we take responsibility for our part, we can change things.

In German, "work" is a Nuisance — and I love that

Honestly I never noticed this strange thing until I moved to the Netherlands. Because here, the translation of “I worked all day”

“Ik heb de hele dag gewerkt”

But in German it would be

“Ich habe den ganzen Tag gearbeitet”

All three are Germanic languages, and the words “werk” and “work” sound really similar. And in German, we do have many words with “Werk” in them. Like the aforementioned “werktags” (on working days), but also:

das Werk (Kunstwerk, Bauwerk, Lebenswerk – piece of art, building, life’s work)
das Werkzeug (tool)
die Werkstatt (workshop)
der Werksleiter (factory manager)
das Werkstor (factory gate)
das Werkstück (workpiece)
das Uhrwerk (clockwork)
das Kraftwerk (power plant)
das Handwerk (craft)
das Netzwerk (network)

And even the verb „wirken“ (to have an effect, to work).

So how come we don’t say „werken“ for working?

Rooted in the same place, grown in different directions

Apparently, the Germanic root *werkaną is where all three languages took their respective words from. It originally meant something like to do something, to make or repair something, to have an effect.

Old German, however, developed the word „Arbeit“, which originally meant toil, trouble, effort — basically a nuisance.

Can we just take a moment to let that sink in?
I couldn’t love this more.

Over time, this meaning shifted toward hard labour, and eventually it morphed into the general word for work in German. Today, we use phrases like „sich abmühen“ or „sich abplagen“ (to struggle, to toil) as replacements for that original meaning.

And what happened to “werken”?

„werken“ became a much more specialised word in German and is now used only in very specific contexts.

Its meaning is often connected to:

art (as in Kunstwerk)
technical contexts (like Werkstatt)
or effects and results, as in „Die Medizin wirkt“ (the medicine is working).

It is not a neutral word for work. It almost always carries extra connotations. It tends to sound:

old-fashioned or religious
poetic or artistic
technical

That’s why we would never say:

❌ Ich werke im Büro

but instead:

✅ Ich arbeite im Büro

Still, “Werk” has survived in many constructions we use to this day, such as „Gesamtwerk“ (the complete body of work of an artist), „Werksgelände“ (factory premises), „Gottes Werk“ (God’s work), or „Mechanismen am Werk“ (mechanisms at work).

Do you struggle to decide between “der”, “die” and “das”?

“Arbeit” in other languages

„Arbeit“ is not only a German word. Dutch uses it too — but in a more abstract way. The everyday work people do at the office is simply called „werken“.

However, when Dutch talks about the social, legal, or economic concept of work, it uses „arbeid“. Here are a few examples:

arbeid – labour (general)
arbeidsmarkt – labour market
arbeidsrecht – labour law
arbeidstijd – working time
arbeidsvoorwaarden – employment conditions
arbeidscontract – employment contract
arbeidsongeschikt – incapacitated for work (temporary or permanent)
arbeidsmigrant – migrant worker
arbeidsverhouding – employment relationship
arbeidskracht – labour power
arbeidsloon – wages
arbeidsdeling – division of labour

I find „arbeidsmigrant“ particularly interesting, because it’s not a theoretical concept but a very real group of people. Maybe this choice of word hints at a certain distance society wants to place between itself and these workers?

Living in another language has a funny way of revealing things you never questioned before. I had said „Ich arbeite“ my whole life without realizing how much weight that word carries. It took crossing a border — and switching verbs — to notice that in German, work is still, at its core, something you endure. Maybe that says less about language and more about how deeply history sticks around, quietly, in everyday sentences.

A fun way to learn German is by watching German shows. But how should you do it?

Beginners

Watch the show in German with English subtitles (or subtitles in your native language).

Advanced learners

Watch the show in German with German subtitles.

For beginners, it’s important to recognise words and phrases. You need to hear how they’re pronounced and understand the context in which native speakers use them. The more input you get, the better.

For advanced learners, this becomes less important, because you’re already able to use the language. At this stage, films and shows are great for vocabulary mining and extra exposure. Try watching genres you wouldn’t normally use German for. I especially recommend comedies and romance movies, because humour and emotions are some of the hardest things to express in a foreign language.
Documentaries are also a great option if you want to learn more about specific subjects while improving your German.

Not sure which level you’re on?

If you notice that the English subtitles feel unnecessary, switch to German subtitles.
If you feel like you can’t follow the plot with German subtitles, switch back to English. Simple as that.

Secret tip

If you want to get your feet wet, try watching a movie you already know very well—in German. Many famous movies have been dubbed into German, so they’re usually easy to find.

Because you already know the plot, you don’t need to concentrate on understanding the story and can focus on the language instead. And honestly, it’s also really funny to hear your favourite actors with completely different voices and notice how certain lines were translated.

Active vs. passive listening

There are two main ways to use listening practice:

Passive listening

This means you’re using the language mainly to understand the meaning. It’s what we usually do in our native language—we use language as a tool to communicate.

In a foreign language, this is harder because you’re missing vocabulary. But once your level allows it, passive listening is an excellent way to increase exposure. It gives you repetition and helps you pick up new words naturally.

Active listening

Active listening requires much more concentration. You’re analysing what you hear, looking for patterns, new words, and connections. This is what we automatically do at the beginning of learning a language, because we know so little and rely heavily on context.

Returning to this method at a more advanced level means you’re prioritising sentence structure and vocabulary over pure enjoyment. It’s less fun than simply following the plot, but you can learn a lot from it. Because it’s mentally demanding, you won’t be able to do this for very long at a time.

My recommendation

Use a combination of both:

80% passive listening: just enjoy the show.
Then, pick a word or phrase that caught your attention.
Pause the show, rewind, and listen again.
Analyse how it was used, why it stood out, write it down, and think of different ways you could use it yourself.

How can you use AI as a language learner?

I’m writing this as a German teacher with 5 years of experience teaching in the Netherlands and Belgium, in secondary schools, adult education, and corporate training.

Over the past years, one thing has become very clear: students who know how to talk to AI properly learn much more effectively. The quality of AI output is not magic – it is the result of a well-structured prompt.

Why I use a 7-step prompt structure

In this article, every prompt is built using seven fixed elements:

Goal – what do you want to learn or practice?
Context – what should the AI know about your situation?
Role – who should the AI pretend to be?
Task / extra explanation – what exactly should the AI do?
Target group – who is this explanation for?
Parameters – length, structure, level, format
Tone – how should the AI sound?

This structure comes from educational prompt engineering models used in teacher training in Belgium and the Netherlands (adult education, ICT pedagogy, and language teaching). It is closely related to models developed by instructional designers such as Lut De Jaegher, and it reflects how teachers naturally design good learning tasks. I came across it in a training by my colleague at Qrios Essie Vandeput

I’m writing this article from the perspective of a German learner, but of course you can adjust it to match your target language.

Teacher tip:

German cheat code: how to avoid conjugations

What was the conjugation of “ihr” again? Yeah, it’s not the same as the other plural persons, but what was it? And what happens with verbs that end in -t or -d? Why is it “ich esse” but “du isst”? It makes no sense!

You’ll be relieved to hear that there’s a cheat code to avoid conjugation of regular verbs altogether.

It’s actually pretty simple. And this trick reduces the amount of verbs whose conjugation you need to learn down to about ten instead of over ten thousand!

A helping hand

Modal verbs are called “Hilfsverben” in German, or helping verbs. And that’s what they do. They help you to express something more about what you want to say, they’re the seasoning in your sentence. There’s a big difference between “I want to marry you” and “I have to marry you”

So which ones does German have? Well there’s two that are mainly used for grammar, you will have come across them when expressing the past tense: sein + haben. And there’s “werden” for the future tense

But other than those we have the following:

können (can)
dürfen (may)
müssen (must)
sollen (should)
wollen (want)
möchten (polite want for orders)
mögen (like)

So these are the seven verbs that can make all other conjugation irrelavant.

How does it work?

The simple sentence structure in German is: person + verb + object - the same as in English or Dutch.

You might say “Ich trinke Cola” (I drink Coke)

But if instead of “ich” you use any other person, you’ll have to adjust the conjugation. Unlike than English and Dutch, German has many more different verb endings. For drinking it looks like this:

ich trinke
du trinkst
er, sie, es trinkt
wir trinken
ihr trinkt
sie, Sie trinken

These make four different endings, and you need to remember where to put which.

To simplify you may say “Ich mag Cola trinken” (I like to drink coke) or “Ich werde Cola trinken” (I will drink coke) or use any other modal verb that fits your situation.

You can see how the modal verb takes the place of the regular verb and pushes it to the end of the sentence. It also turns the verb back into its infinitive form, no matter which person is at the beginning of the sentence.

Tricks for conjugating modal verbs

For “haben”, “sein” and “werden” I don’t know any good tricks. You’ll have to learn them by heart, but it is worth it. They are used very frequently in German. If you need help, take a look at my Quizlet pages for practicing them: haben und sein, werden

Let’s take a look at the conjugation of the other modal verbs:

If we look more closely at the first and third person singular (ich, er, sie, es) we notice that they are conjugated the exact same way. The second person singular ends in -st, as we’re used to from regular verbs.

We see the same pattern for the plural forms: the conjugation is identical to regular verbs. Again, the first (wir) and third (sie, Sie) plural forms are the same, and the second plural form (ihr) ends in -t.

One more striking thing about these conjugations is that most singular forms have a different vowel than the plural forms. Take for example “dürfen”: the vowel changes from a → ü — ich darf → wir dürfen!

I hope these tips help you to remember the the right conjugation of modal verbs. But in any case, I also have a quizlet practice for these.

Learning the regular verb conjugation can be handy in any case. You can use this Quizlet practice for it. For Dutch people I have a little trick to remember the conjugation. Just remember the word “feesttenten”.

(fe) e st t en t en > except the first two letters, these are the regular endings for German verbs.

Why native speakers are some of the worst teachers

When I moved to the Netherlands in 2016, I wanted to start a Dutch course right away. Just like my parents, I wanted to be independent and self-sufficient in my new home. During my intake appointment at the language school, the kind secretary not only explained all the practical details — she also gave me one piece of advice I’ve never forgotten.

She suggested that at home my partner and I should continue communicating in English, with one small exception:
Choose one moment each day to speak only Dutch.

She explained why this approach works so well:

A new language is mentally exhausting. Limiting the time you speak it keeps motivation high.
Early vocabulary is tiny. Repeating the same predictable situation helps the basics become automatic.
Talking to your partner in their native language is emotionally loaded. High-stakes conversations make learning harder.

Her advice ended up being spot-on — not just practically, but scientifically.

How to learn their language without murdering them

The conversations we have with partners are rarely just practical. They involve emotions, conflict, vulnerability, and daily frustrations. Trying to express all of that in a foreign language while being constantly corrected is… painful.

This is not just a feeling — it’s backed by linguistics and psychology:

Emotional pressure increases cognitive load. When you are stressed, your working memory (which you rely on when speaking a new language) shrinks dramatically.
Stephen Krashen famously stated in his Affective Filter Hypothesis that “anxiety, low motivation, and self-consciousness can block language acquisition.”

So switching entirely to your partner’s language from day one is not only exhausting — it can be counterproductive.

Choosing an easy moment like breakfast, where the emotional stakes are low, gives you space to practice. You relax because you know: This is the only time today I’m expected to speak the target language. Repetition comes naturally. Your partner sees daily progress. Everyone stays sane.
