Voici 1 mois que je suis maman.

Un mois que mes jours et mes nuits ne se distinguent plus vraiment, qu’ils s’enroulent autour d’un même mouvement : prendre soin de ma fille.

Je passe des heures à l’observer. Je l’écoute respirer, soupirer, remuer. J’étudie les signes minuscules qui apparaissent sur son visage : un froncement de sourcils, une bouche qui cherche, une paupière qui tremble, une main qui s’ouvre. J’essaie de comprendre ce qui lui arrive avant même qu’elle puisse me le dire. Je découvre une langue sans mots, faite de regards, de gestes, de chaleur et de silences. Une langue que je ne maîtrise pas encore, mais que mon corps semble parfois reconnaître avant moi.

Je me souviens de notre première rencontre. La toute première fois qu’elle est venue se blottir contre moi. Son corps est déposé sur le mien. Puis nos regards se sont trouvés.

Elle était curieuse, vive, incroyablement présente. Ses yeux semblaient fixés sur moi avec une attention entière, comme si elle cherchait déjà à reconnaître celle dont elle connaissait pourtant la voix, le rythme et les battements. Et moi, évidemment, je ne pouvais plus la quitter du regard.

Je réalise: Noème est arrivée.

Elle est là, enfin. Tant attendue. Tant imaginée. Tant aimée déjà.

Une sensation étrange m’envahit, difficile à saisir avec des mots : un mélange d’extase, de détente et de soulagement. Comme si mon corps, après avoir tenu pendant neuf mois, pouvait enfin expirer. Comme si tout s’ouvrait et se relâchait en même temps.

Je découvre ce petit être hors de mon ventre. Elle qui, jusque-là, avait vécu cachée en moi, dans l’obscurité chaude de ma matrice, était soudain là, visible, respirant le même air que nous.

Au fil des jours, je reconnais certains mouvements. Certaines manières de sursauter, de s’étirer ou de réagir à un son, à un toucher. Des gestes que j’avais déjà sentis de l’intérieur et que je vois maintenant se déployer devant moi. Il y a quelque chose de bouleversant à reconnaître ainsi un être que l’on rencontre pourtant pour la première fois.

Avant sa naissance, son papa et moi communiquions déjà beaucoup avec elle. Nous lui parlions. Nous lui faisions écouter de la musique. Il y avait la flûte, l’harmonica, et cette petite boîte à musique qui jouait Hey Jude. Nos voix et nos mélodies traversaient la peau, l’eau, le mystère. Aujourd’hui encore, lorsque certains de ces sons reviennent, j’aime imaginer qu’une mémoire s’éveille quelque part en elle. Une mémoire sans images, mais peut-être faite de vibrations familières.

Noème est bien là maintenant.

Mettre au monde est une expérience merveilleuse et inquiétante. La joie immense ne fait pas disparaître la peur. Elles vivent ensemble. Elles se tiennent parfois par la main.

Les heures passent au rythme des tétées, de son sommeil et de ses éveils. Nous ne dormons quasiment pas les premiers jours. Le mélange de joie, d’extase, de questions et de fatigue s’ accumulent. Nous regardons ses petits yeux découvrir la lumière. Nous nous demandons si elle respire bien, si elle mange assez, si elle est en bonne santé, si nous faisons les choses comme il faut.

Elle développe son rythme, et son rythme devient le nôtre. Il devient surtout le mien, à travers l’allaitement. Les heures ne sont plus indiquées par les aiguilles d’une horloge, mais par les tétées, les réveils, les endormissements, la montée du lait, les petits yeux qui s’ouvrent puis se referment sur le monde.

Les questions arrivent avec elle. Certaines peurs anciennes remontent. La vulnérabilité s’ouvre, les responsabilités se révèlent. Pour moi, c’est mon premier enfant. Et la première fois que je ressens depuis le fond de mes entrailles le fait d’être responsable d’ un autre être qui semble être l’ extension de tout mon être, de son papa et à la fois un être qui deviendra elle même ,qui se formera et se définira. Et moi, je suis la …pour toujours.

Porter un enfant est un univers.

Accoucher en est un autre.

Et allaiter ouvre encore un monde différent, presque indescriptible. Un monde où se rencontrent l’instinct, l’animalité, la physiologie, la chimie et la tendresse. Un monde où son corps et le mien poursuivent une conversation commencée bien avant sa naissance.

Mon lait la nourrit, et sa succion semble aussi réparer quelque chose en moi. Je sens mon ventre répondre lorsqu’elle tète. Je sens parfois le lait arriver avant même qu’elle ne réclame, comme si mon corps savait déjà que c’est l’heure…Ses hormones et les miennes semblent se chercher, se reconnaître et s’accorder dans une mystérieuse chorégraphie.

Nos corps savent des choses que mon esprit apprend encore.

Nous essayons, nous observons, nous ajustons. Ce que nous croyons comprendre un jour redevient un mystère le lendemain. Ce que nous pensions avoir interprété se complète, se déplace ou se transforme quelques heures plus tard. Rien n’est tout à fait acquis. Chaque journée invente ses propres règles.

Alors j’essaie de revenir au corps.

Je cherche à m’ancrer dans mes sensations, dans ma respiration, dans ce qui se passe ici et maintenant. Avant les explications, avant les conseils, avant les peurs, il y a ce petit être devant moi. Il y a sa chaleur, ses gestes, ses besoins. Il y a mon corps qui répond. Il y a notre relation qui se construit, lentement, tétée après tétée, regard après regard.

Chaque jour possède une couleur différente. Parfois, tout semble fluide. Parfois, l’incertitude revient. La maternité ne s’installe pas comme une réponse définitive. Elle se déploie comme une question vivante.

Et au milieu de tout cela, un amour incomparable émerge.

Il ne ressemble pas seulement à ce que j’imaginais. Il me traverse, me déplace, m’oblige à découvrir de nouvelles dimensions de moi-même. Dans cette relation entre ma fille et moi, je rencontre ce que donner veut réellement dire.

Je traverse les différentes couches du lâcher-prise.

Lâcher mes attentes.

Lâcher l’idée de contrôler le temps.

Lâcher la femme que je croyais devoir continuer d’être exactement comme avant.

Me rendre, pour un temps, au rythme de Noème. Accueillir ses besoins, ses appels, son sommeil et sa faim. Accepter que mes propres désirs changent de place.

Je dois aussi prendre soin de moi, de mon corps, de mon centre et de mon bien-être. Prendre soin de notre couple. Prendre soin de cette nouvelle famille que nous sommes en train de devenir. Chercher un espace où je peux être entièrement sa mère sans cesser d’être moi.

Toutes ces dimensions s’entrelacent et se chevauchent.

Il y avait d’abord un : moi.

Puis un plus un : son papa et moi, notre couple, notre monde à deux.

Et maintenant, un plus un plus un : Noème et nous

On pourrait dire que la somme fait trois. Mais ce serait trop simple.

Car chacun de nous reste un être entier. Notre couple continue d’exister tout en se transformant. Une nouvelle relation naît entre un père et sa fille. Une autre entre une mère et son enfant. Et quelque chose apparaît entre nous trois, une forme nouvelle qui ne se réduit à aucun de nous.

Alors peut-être que nous sommes trois.

Peut-être davantage.

Peut-être qu’une famille n’est pas une addition, mais un univers qui s’ouvre entre les êtres.

Et je crois que c’est cela que je découvre depuis que Noème est là.

Créer une famille, pour moi, c’est voir apparaître quelque chose qui n’existait pas auparavant et qui pourtant semble trouver immédiatement sa place. Une intimité nouvelle. Une manière différente d’habiter le temps, la maison, mon corps, ma relation avec son papa, et peut-être même le monde.

Devenir maman me fait entrer dans une relation dont je ne connais encore presque rien. Je suis là pour nourrir Noème, la protéger, la rassurer, lui offrir mes bras, ma présence et tout ce que je pourrai lui transmettre. Mais je découvre aussi que l’accompagner signifie apprendre à la regarder devenir elle-même.

Elle vient de nous, elle porte quelque chose de nous, et pourtant elle est déjà entièrement singulière.

Cette pensée me bouleverse.

Aujourd’hui, elle dépend presque entièrement de moi. Son corps cherche le mien. Elle s’endort contre ma poitrine. Elle reconnaît ma voix. Mes bras constituent encore une grande partie de son monde. Et pourtant, contenue dans ce minuscule corps, il y a déjà une vie qui prendra ses propres directions, développera ses goûts, ses élans, ses questions, ses liens, ses rêves.

Je serai là pour assister à cela.

Peut-être est-ce cela qui me touche le plus dans le fait de devenir mère : recevoir pour un temps cette proximité extraordinaire avec un être, tout en sachant que mon rôle sera aussi de l’aider peu à peu à trouver sa propre manière d’être au monde.

Je ne sais pas encore quelle mère je serai. Je ne sais pas ce que Noème m’apprendra, ce que nous traverserons ensemble, ni comment cette famille nous transformera au fil des années.

Pour l’instant, elle a trois semaines.

Je la regarde dormir contre moi. Je sens son poids, sa chaleur, son souffle. Son papa est là. Nous apprenons tous les trois cette nouvelle forme de vie.

Et parmi toutes les choses extraordinaires que cette naissance m’a fait ressentir, il y en a une qui reste difficile à expliquer : le sentiment d’assister au commencement de quelque chose d’absolument unique.

Noème est là.

Et avec elle, nous aussi, nous venons de naître autrement.

Noème Is Here

It has been three weeks since I became a mother.

Three weeks in which my days and nights no longer really feel separate, but wrap themselves around the same movement: caring for my daughter.

I spend hours watching her. I listen to her breathe, sigh, stir. I study the tiny signs that appear on her face: a furrowed brow, a searching mouth, a trembling eyelid, a hand opening. I try to understand what is happening to her before she is even able to tell me. I am discovering a language without words, made of looks, gestures, warmth and silence. A language I do not yet know how to speak, but which my body sometimes seems to recognize before I do.

I remember our first meeting. The very first time she came to nestle against me. Her body was placed on mine. Then our eyes met.

She was curious, alert, incredibly present. Her eyes seemed fixed on me with complete attention, as though she were already trying to recognize the person whose voice, rhythm and heartbeat she already knew. And I, of course, could not take my eyes off her.

I realise…Noème had arrived.

She was here, at last. So long awaited. So long imagined. Already so deeply loved.

A strange feeling came over me, difficult to capture in words: a mixture of ecstasy, release and relief. As though my body, after holding on for nine months, could finally exhale. As though everything were opening and letting go at the same time.

I discovered this tiny being outside my belly. Until then, she had lived hidden inside me, in the warm darkness of my womb. Suddenly she was here, visible, breathing the same air as us.

As the days pass, I recognize certain movements. Certain ways she startles, stretches, or reacts to a sound or a touch. Gestures I had already felt from the inside and now watch unfold in front of me. There is something profoundly moving about recognizing someone I am also meeting for the very first time.

Before she was born, her father and I already communicated with her a great deal. We talked to her. We played music for her. There was the flute, the harmonica, and a little music box that played Hey Jude. Our voices and melodies travelled through skin, water and mystery. Even now, when some of those sounds return, I like to imagine that a memory awakens somewhere inside her. A memory without images, perhaps, made instead of familiar vibrations.

Noème is truly here now.

Bringing a child into the world is both wonderful and unsettling. Immense joy does not make fear disappear. They live side by side. Sometimes they seem to hold hands.

The hours pass according to the rhythm of feedings, sleep and wakefulness. During the first few days, we barely sleep at all. Joy, ecstasy, questions and exhaustion accumulate together. We watch her little eyes discover the light. We wonder whether she is breathing properly, whether she is eating enough, whether she is healthy, whether we are doing things right.

She begins to develop her rhythm, and her rhythm becomes ours. Above all, it becomes mine through breastfeeding. The hours are no longer marked by the hands of a clock, but by feeds, waking, falling asleep, the arrival of milk, those little eyes opening and then closing again upon the world.

The questions arrive with her. Some old fears rise again. Vulnerability opens up, and responsibilities reveal themselves. For me, this is my first child. It is the first time I have felt, from the very depths of my body, what it means to be responsible for another being who seems to be an extension of everything I am, of her father too, while at the same time already being a person who will become herself, who will grow, shape herself and define herself.

And I am here... forever.

Carrying a child is one universe.

Giving birth is another.

And breastfeeding opens yet another world, almost impossible to describe. A world where instinct, animality, physiology, chemistry and tenderness meet. A world in which her body and mine continue a conversation that began long before her birth.

My milk nourishes her, and her suckling seems to repair something in me too. I feel my belly respond when she feeds. Sometimes I feel the milk coming before she has even asked for it, as though my body already knows it is time. Her hormones and mine seem to seek each other out, recognize one another and fall into rhythm in a mysterious choreography.

Our bodies know things my mind is still learning.

We try, we observe, we adjust. What we think we understand one day becomes a mystery again the next. What we thought we had interpreted becomes more complex, shifts, or transforms a few hours later. Nothing is ever completely settled. Each day seems to invent its own rules.

So I try to return to the body.

I try to ground myself in sensation, in my breathing, in what is happening here and now. Before explanations, before advice, before fear, there is this tiny being in front of me. There is her warmth, her movements, her needs. There is my body responding. There is our relationship, slowly taking shape, feeding after feeding, gaze after gaze.

Each day has a different colour. Sometimes everything feels fluid. Sometimes uncertainty returns. Motherhood does not settle into a final answer. It unfolds like a living question.

And in the middle of all this, an incomparable love emerges.

It goes beyond what I had imagined. It moves through me, shifts something inside me, and asks me to discover dimensions of myself I did not know before. In this relationship between my daughter and me, I am beginning to understand what giving truly means.

I am moving through different layers of letting go.

Letting go of my expectations.

Letting go of the idea that I can control time.

Letting go of the woman I thought I had to continue being exactly as before.

Surrendering, for a while, to Noème’s rhythm. Receiving her needs, her calls, her sleep and her hunger. Accepting that my own desires are changing place.

I also need to care for myself, for my body, my centre and my well-being. To care for our relationship as a couple. To care for this new family we are becoming. To find a space where I can be fully her mother without ceasing to be myself.

All these dimensions intertwine and overlap.

First there was one: me.

Then one plus one: her father and me, our relationship, our world of two.

And now, one plus one plus one: Noème and us.

We could say the sum makes three. But that would be too simple.

Each of us remains a whole being. Our relationship as a couple continues while transforming. A new relationship is born between a father and his daughter. Another between a mother and her child. And something appears between the three of us, a new form that cannot be reduced to any one of us.

So perhaps we are three.

Perhaps we are more.

Perhaps a family is not an addition, but a universe opening between beings.

And I think this is what I have been discovering since Noème arrived.

For me, creating a family means watching something come into existence that was not there before, yet somehow seems to find its place immediately. A new intimacy. A different way of inhabiting time, the house, my body, my relationship with her father, and perhaps even the world.

Becoming a mother brings me into a relationship about which I still know almost nothing. I am here to feed Noème, protect her, reassure her, give her my arms, my presence and everything I may be able to pass on to her. I am also discovering that accompanying her means learning to watch her become herself.

She comes from us. She carries something of us. And yet she is already completely singular.

That thought overwhelms me.

Today, she depends on me for almost everything. Her body searches for mine. She falls asleep against my chest. She recognizes my voice. My arms still make up a large part of her world. And yet, contained within this tiny body, there is already a life that will take its own directions, develop its own tastes, impulses, questions, relationships and dreams.

I will be there to witness that.

Perhaps this is what moves me most about becoming a mother: being given, for a time, this extraordinary closeness to another being, while knowing that part of my role will be to help her gradually discover her own way of being in the world.

I do not yet know what kind of mother I will be. I do not know what Noème will teach me, what we will go through together, or how this family will transform us over the years.

For now, she is three weeks old.

I watch her sleeping against me. I feel her weight, her warmth, her breath. Her father is here. The three of us are learning this new form of life.

And among all the extraordinary things this birth has made me feel, there is one that remains difficult to explain: the feeling of witnessing the beginning of something absolutely unique.

And with her, we too have been born in a new way.

De nombreux projets de restauration commencent par un diagnostic écologique : sols dégradés, eau peu fiable, perte de biodiversité, érosion, déforestation ou insécurité alimentaire. Pour nous, à Grassroots Economics, ces phénomènes sont aussi les symptômes d’une perturbation sociale et économique plus profonde.

Nous considérons donc ce travail comme une restauration des écosystèmes et du « sol social », en traitant la terre, l’eau, les moyens de subsistance, la culture et la gouvernance comme des éléments inséparables. Une réparation écologique durable dépend des systèmes humains qui l’entretiennent : travail partagé, règles équitables, prise de décision locale, mécanismes de réparation des conflits et routines de transmission des savoirs. Si les communautés ne disposent pas de règles communes, de confiance, de systèmes de travail collectif, de routines de maintenance, d’espaces de décision et de moyens de résoudre les tensions, la restauration peut rester temporaire.

Le travail mené dans le bassin versant de Takaungu relie les fermes des zones en amont, les chemins, les espaces communautaires et les écosystèmes en bordure de rivière des Mangroves. Les activités villageoises comprennent la gestion du bassin versant, la collecte de l’eau, le contrôle de l’érosion, le développement de terrasses et de structures d’infiltration d’eau dans le sol, les bandes végétales, la santé des sols, les pépinières, l’agroécologie, les forêts nourricières, la biodiversité, l’apiculture et la protection des forêts indigènes comme pratiques centrales de restauration. L’objectif est de coordonner les soins depuis les zones amont jusqu’au bord de la rivière afin que l’eau s’infiltre, que les sols restent en place et que les mangroves subissent moins de pression liée aux sédiments.

Restaurer la terre soutient aussi la vie quotidienne et les moyens de subsistance. Des sols plus sains permettent de produire davantage de nourriture plus saine. Une meilleure gestion de l’eau aide les cultures à survivre. Les pépinières fournissent des arbres pour les fermes et les forêts. L’apiculture soutient la pollinisation et la biodiversité. La cuisine communautaire relie les récoltes, la nutrition, la culture et l’apprentissage. Ainsi, la production alimentaire devient une partie intégrante de la guérison de l’ensemble du bassin versant.

Au cœur du travail mené dans le bassin versant de Takaungu, dans la zone de Kiriba, se trouvent deux questions : comment restaurer la terre ? Et quel type de coordination communautaire permet de continuer à prendre soin de cette terre au fil des saisons ?

Ce qui a été construit jusqu’à présent : du centre de Mnyumbuni à un réseau communautaire élargi

Au cours des trois dernières années, Grassroots Economics Foundation a soutenu le développement de Mnyumbuni, dans la zone de Kiriba, en tant que centre communautaire, ferme de démonstration, lieu de formation, espace de rassemblement et sanctuaire biorégional. Le travail suit une logique « des crêtes au récif », reliant ce qui se passe dans les fermes, les chemins et les sols en amont à ce qui apparaît ensuite en aval dans la rivière de Takaungu et les mangroves. Mnyumbuni apporte des terres, des infrastructures, des formations, des outils de terrain, des systèmes de données, des standards écosystémiques, des certificats et des outils de coordination qui rendent le travail de soin visible et responsable.

Les membres de la communauté ont appris et travaillé à travers des activités pratiques et la mise en œuvre du site de Mnyumbuni : collecte de l’eau, contrôle de l’érosion, régénération des sols, compostage, paillage, terrasses, check dams, gabions, stabilisation des routes, jardins potagers, dynamiques de cultures syntropiques, forêts nourricières, pépinières d’arbres, systèmes d’eaux grises, apiculture, transformation alimentaire et cuisine communautaire.

Mnyumbuni est devenu une école vivante du bassin versant, où les personnes apprennent en faisant : construire le sol, planter des arbres, récolter l’eau, préparer des jardins potagers, restaurer les routes d’accès, entretenir les pépinières, cuisiner ensemble, documenter le travail et utiliser la platforme digitale dévelopeé par la fondation Grassroots Economics, appelée Sarafu Network, pour enregistrer les engagements et les contributions.

Autour du centre, et au cours de ces trois dernières années, plus de 100 voisins ont ravivé des pratiques locales de travail partagé et de gouvernance connues sous le nom de Mwerya, aussi écrit Mweria, et Dhome. Ce sont des systèmes traditionnels de travail rotatif, d’assemblées locales, de planification et de responsabilité mutuelle. Les 100 voisins environnants ont organisé des groupes locaux et ont montré comment le travail se déplace dans la communauté, comment ils coordonnent ensemble leurs propres ressources et comment un village s’engage à prendre soin des personnes et de la nature.

Chaque groupe se réunit dans des pratiques rotatives hebdomadaires, et chacun apporte ce qu’il peut offrir : travail, nourriture, soin, outils, connaissances, semences, matériaux ou temps. Le groupe décide où le soutien est nécessaire. Un foyer, un chemin, une ferme, un site de restauration ou une tâche communautaire reçoit de l’aide lorsque vient son tour. Donner et recevoir en réciprocité reste en équilibre dans le temps grâce au groupe.

Ces trois premières années ont construit les fondations d’un système d’intendance communautaire qui se déploie autour du village.

Comment la platforme Sarafu Network et les bassins d’engagement soutiennent le travail

Un bassin d’engagement représenté sur la platforme Sarafu Network est une manière simple de rendre les promesses locales visibles et utiles. Il agit comme un système de mémoire partagée. Il aide à rendre le travail de soin visible et responsable, tout en maintenant la gouvernance au niveau local. Il montre un système vivant de coordination avec des personnes, des registres, des pratiques, des groupes et une activité visible déjà en place.

Ces bassins d’engagement suivent les systèmes locaux de coordination des communautés qui organisent le travail, les prêts, l’agriculture, les infrastructures, l’alimentation, le soin des sols, le soin de l’eau et le soutien mutuel.

Les rapports d’activité sur la platforme, autour de Mnyumbuni seul, sont associés à 152 actions, 4 944 heures structurées de rapports et des catégories majeures telles que l’agriculture régénérative, la culture, la permaculture, l’éducation, la santé des sols, les rassemblements, la formation et la collecte de l’eau. Les rapports incluent des check dams, gabions, travaux de stabilisation de route, définition de terrasses, gestion de la biomasse, plantations de vétiver, construction de sols, compost, paillage, jardins potagers, techniques d’agriculutre syntropique, développement de pépinières, plantation d’arbres, systèmes d’eaux grises, entretien de ruches, transformation alimentaire et récoltes.

Les activités de groupes locaux autour du projet du bassin versant de Takaungu sont suivies dans Sarafu Network à travers les cinq chama connectés à Mnyumbuni : Kiriba Chama, Mnyumbuni Chama, Upendo Kiriba Group, Neema Chama et Nguvu Kazi Chama. Le rapport d’activité de Sarafu Network montre qu’à travers les six pools connectés, il existe 164 appartenances de tokens, 1 419 swaps, 1 177 dépôts et 591 liens-rapport sur une fenêtre de preuves de trois ans. Les activités les plus récurrentes sont la restauration des écosystèmes et l’agriculture régénérative : jardins syntropiques et agroforestiers, santé des sols, compostage, paillage, collecte de l’eau, contrôle de l’érosion, pépinières, plantation d’arbres, production alimentaire et apiculture.

Mnyumbuni Chama enregistre une forte activité en agriculture régénérative, construction, transformation alimentaire, formation et permaculture. Neema Chama montre des activités en agriculture régénérative, permaculture, production alimentaire, santé des sols, construction, formation et rassemblements. Nguvu Kazi Chama montre des activités en construction, agriculture régénérative, permaculture, santé des sols, production alimentaire, construction de maisons, rassemblements et construction naturelle. Kiriba et Upendo Kiriba montrent des tendances fortes en agriculture régénérative, construction, santé des sols, rassemblements, transformation alimentaire, formation, permaculture et art.

Les certificats comme preuves de soin

Les certificats dévelopés sur Sarafu Network sur le Sol, l’ Eau et l’ Alimentation, et qui circulent dans Sarafu Network sont des reconnaissances numériques d’un travail d’intendance accompli. Ils sont émis selon des pratiques définies et des standards de rapports de terrain, aidant à classer, enregistrer et rendre visibles les travaux écologiques, intégrés et régénératifs liés aux systèmes alimentaires, réalisés par les groupes locaux.

Dans le programme du bassin versant de Takaungu, ces certificats aident à traduire le travail de terrain en un système de comptabilité partagée. Un rapport de terrain enregistre ce qui s’est passé. Un certificat identifie le type de travail d’intendance accompli. Un une transaction peut ensuite montrer comment cette contribution reconnue a circulé dans le système d’échange local.

Le Certificate sur l’ Eau peut être lié à des activités telles que la collecte de l’eau, les terrasses, les check dams, les gabions, le drainage routier, les systèmes d’eaux grises, le contrôle de l’érosion, les structures d’infiltration, le dévelopment de la végétation et la maintenance des ouvrages de collecte d’eau.

Le Certificate sur le Sol peut être lié à des activités telles que le compostage, le paillage, la gestion de la biomasse, les approches d’agriculture syntropique, la couverture du sol, la plantation de vétiver, le contrôle de l’érosion, les terrasses, la préparation agroforestière et les pratiques de construction des sols qui aident la terre à retenir davantage d’eau et de fertilité au fil du temps.

Le Certificat sur l’Alimentation peut être lié à des activités telles que les jardins potagers, les forêts nourricières, les parcelles agroécologiques, les semences et pépinières, la propagation d’arbres, la diversité des cultures, les récoltes, la transformation alimentaire, les activités de cuisine communautaire, l’apprentissage nutritionnel et la distribution alimentaire locale.

Ces certificats sont des traces, des preuves. Ils connectent les activités rapportées à des catégories reconnues d’intendance, rendant plus facile de voir quel travail a été fait, où il a eu lieu, qui a participé et comment il s’inscrit dans un processus de restauration plus long.

Techniquement, chaque certificat peut porter ou référencer des informations clés : le type d’activité, le lieu, la date, le groupe participant, la méthode utilisée, la quantité réalisée, le rapport lié, le statut de vérification et le standard ou la méthodologie appliquée. Cela crée une chaîne plus claire entre le travail réalisé sur la terre, les preuves enregistrées dans les rapports et la valeur reconnue dans Sarafu Network.

La prochaine phase du programme du bassin versant de Takaungu renforcera cette couche de preuves en reliant les rapports et certificats Sarafu à un suivi écologique plus approfondi. Cela peut inclure l’infiltration, la matière organique du sol, la survie des arbres, la couverture végétale, la rétention d’eau, la diversité des cultures, les observations de biodiversité, l’activité des pollinisateurs et l’adoption communautaire des pratiques.

L’objectif est de reconnaître la restauration comme un processus de soin, d’apprentissage, de maintenance et d’adaptation sur le long terme.

Prêts communautaires et liquidité d’impact comme infrastructure à long terme

Grassroots Economics renforce aussi la coordination économique locale en reliant les bassins d’engagement de la platforme aux traditions existantes d’épargne et de prêt communautaires, comme les groupes d’épargne et les associations de crédit rotatif. Cela signifie que le financement d’amorçage peut être géré par les communautés comme liquidité partagée, soutenant des prêts, avances ou crédits pour les semences, les outils, la production alimentaire, les urgences et d’autres travaux productifs. À mesure que les membres empruntent, remboursent, épargnent et réallouent les fonds, les mêmes ressources peuvent circuler à nouveau pour soutenir de nouvelles activités, tandis que les soldes, les engagements et les remboursements restent visibles. Le projet du bassin versant de Takaungu montre comment le financement d’amorçage peut devenir une infrastructure à long terme. L’objectif est de renforcer la capacité locale à maintenir les sols, l’eau, l’alimentation et le travail de restauration en mouvement à travers les saisons, en particulier après une formation, une subvention ou un événement de plantation.

Dans ce modèle, une injection d’impact fournit de la liquidité à un véritable système géré par la communauté. Elle relie les bassins d’enagement sur la platforme digitale aux traditions existantes d’épargne et de prêt, les groupes d’épargne, les associations de crédit rotatif et les cycles de travail Mwerya/Dhome. Le financement peut préfinancer ou approfondir le lien entre les offres à finalité locale, les certificats de Sol, de l’Eau et de l’Alimentation, les rapports de terrain, la gouvernance locale et le règlement de dettes stable.

Ici la valeur n’est donc pas mesurée uniquement comme un rendement financier. La valeur d’une injection revient sous forme de résultats écologiques et sociaux : sols plus sains, meilleure rétention d’eau, production continue de pépinières, systèmes alimentaires locaux plus forts, coordination du travail plus équitable, bien-être et soin au niveau du village, cycles d’apprentissage, amélioration de la gouvernance de groupe et plus grande résilience des moyens de subsistance locaux.

Dans le programme du bassin versant de Takaungu, Grassroots Economics Foundation agit moins comme un donateur traditionnel que comme celui qui plante une graine pour qu’elle se reproduise par elle même dans le futur. La fondation apporte des ressources catalytiques, des formations, des outils, des standards et un soutien à la coordination dans des systèmes que les communautés gouvernent déjà elles-mêmes. La valeur repose aussi sur les relations, les compétences, les registres, les règles et les engagements répétés qui demeurent. Les contributions non monétaires comme le travail partagé, la production alimentaire, le soin des pépinières, le travail du sol, la collecte de l’eau, la maintenance, l’enseignement et les rassemblements culturels continuent de circuler dans le système, même lorsque la liquidité monétaire est limitée.

L’objectif est de renforcer le « sol social » : les liens communautaires, les responsabilités réciproques et les engagements partagés envers la terre, l’eau, l’alimentation, la nature et les uns envers les autres, qui permettent à la restauration, au soin des personnes et du territoire de continuer au fil des saisons.

Pourquoi le financement est nécessaire maintenant : campagne de financement Ma Earth

Les trois premières années ont montré que les bases sociales existent. Les groupes sont actifs. Le centre fonctionne. Les activités se développent. Le travail se diffuse depuis Mnyumbuni vers les communautés environnantes. Le projet a maintenant besoin de soutien pour passer de la démonstration et de l’expansion initiale à une phase de mise en œuvre plus forte à l’échelle du bassin versant.

Le financement soutiendra trois prochaines étapes connectées.

Premièrement, il soutiendra le développement continu des initiatives communautaires d’agriculture et de restauration. Cela inclut davantage de parcelles agroécologiques, de forêts nourricières, de systèmes de compostage, de jardins potagers, de pépinières de semences indigènes, de propagation d’arbres, de structures de collecte d’eau, de travaux de contrôle de l’érosion, d’apiculture, d’activités de cuisine communautaire et de soutien pratique aux projets portés par les groupes. Deuxièmement, il soutiendra des études scientifiques et un suivi plus approfondis. La prochaine phase a besoin de protocoles de terrain pour la santé des sols, le mouvement de l’eau, la biodiversité, la survie des arbres, la production alimentaire et le fonctionnement du bassin versant. Grassroots Economics identifie déjà des parcours de recherche et d’éducation comme la recherche en socio-écologie et sur les communs, la cartographie du bassin versant, les points photo GPS, les parcelles ou transects, la conception participative du territoire, la cartographie des flux d’eau, l’observation des sols et de la végétation, ainsi que des tableaux de bord ou atlas communautaires.

Troisièmement, il soutiendra le développement de partenariats locaux autour de Takaungu. La restauration d’un bassin versant ne peut pas être réalisée par un seul centre. La prochaine phase approfondira la collaboration avec les groupes communautaires, les leaders locaux, les agriculteurs, les jeunes, les groupes culturels, les universités, les acteurs de la conservation, les écoles, les chercheurs et les institutions locales, afin que la restauration relie les zones amont, les fermes, les forêts sacrées et indigènes, les chemins, les espaces publics, et les mangroves.

Esta traducción nace desde la versión francesa que traduje previamente, en mi idioma natal, y desde ahí encontró un nuevo camino hacia el español.

Traducir no es solo cambiar palabras de un idioma a otro; es escuchar cómo viven las ideas en otra memoria, en otras formas de comunidad, cuidado, reciprocidad y organización. Es tender un puente para que conceptos como compromiso, confianza, abundancia compartida y economía comunitaria puedan dialogar con prácticas que ya existen en muchos pueblos, barrios, cooperativas y redes de habla hispana.

Restoration works when it’s held by people, agreements, rituals, shared work, and governance that protects what is being restored.

That’s what I tried to name in a recent conversation on the TreesForDev podcast, alongside Maria Ehrnström-Fuentes, Project PI of the TreesForDev project.

It felt like an opportunity to pull the thread all the way back: where I come from, why I’m here, and what stewardship looks like when it’s practiced as a commons.

A personal path: from systems thinking to living places

If I had to describe my work in one line, I often say something like:

“I’m a catalyst and a designer for positive systemic change in local communities.”

But that sentence hides the more human truth: I’ve always been pulled toward the places where something is breaking, and where, at the same time, something could be repaired.

I didn’t start with the ambition to “do restoration.” I started with a fascination for how communities coordinate, how trust forms (or collapses), how decisions get made, and how economies shape what becomes possible for people and for land.

And then, step by step, my work became what it is now: moving across ecology, social life, and local economics, because the boundaries between them were never real on the ground.

One of the clearest things I’ve learned is this:

“You can’t restore a watershed without restoring relationships.”

The episode: a conversation about reciprocity and real-world systems

In the podcast, we start with my background, how I got involved, what drew me into ecological restoration, and why I keep insisting on the “multi-layer” view.

Because what we call “environmental problems” are often the visible surface of deeper dynamics:

• how people relate to each other

• how power and hierarchy shape decisions

• how value is defined

• who carries the burden of care

• who benefits from “development”

• who gets to stay, and who gets displaced

Maria and I spoke about restoration not as a set of interventions, but as an ongoing practice of stewardship.

Kenya: learning stewardship through practice with Grassroots Economics

Today, my work is rooted in Kenya, with Grassroots Economics, where the most practical, powerful entry points has been something that is both ancient and deeply contemporary: rotational labor associations.

In the episode, I described these as community work systems where people come together, not because a project hires them, not because a funder demands it, but because the community recognizes something shared that needs care.

A phrase I used in the conversation (and that I often come back to) is:

“Restoration isn’t something you do to a community, it’s something you govern with a community.”

Rotational labor creates a real structure for that. A rhythm. A system of visibility and accountability. A way to keep stewardship alive from within and in healthy interdependance with others.

In practice, it can look like:

• groups rotating to maintain earthworks, nurseries, water systems

• neighbors pooling labor for shared ecological assets

• coordinated days of repair, planting, maintenance, monitoring

• decisions made together about what matters most this season

And this is where I’ve found something surprisingly radical:

“Reciprocity is not an ideal. It’s infrastructure.”

Trust-based systems makes us stronger

Sometimes “trust-based” gets misunderstood as informal or fragile.

In the field, I’ve learned the opposite: reciprocal systems often carry strong accountability systems, because they are witnessed, repeated, and socially enforced.

And yes, trust can break. I honestly hear that too often compared to “ Yes. It works!” And it does. And what matters then is not pretending it won’t, but having real ways to repair.

That’s why I keep coming back to stewardship as a cycle:

Do → measure → share → repair → adapt → redo.

And why I believe that ecological work without social repair is incomplete.

What I hope this conversation offers

If there’s one thing I hope listeners (and readers) take away from this episode, it’s a shift in where we locate “solutions.”

Not in the next tool. Not in the next market mechanism. Not in the next “scaled” model.

But in the living, ordinary, often invisible coordination that makes care possible.

“Commons aren’t an idea. Commons are a practice.”

And stewardship is what keeps that practice alive, season after season.

Over the past twenty years, I’ve gravitated to places where conscious choices take root. In places such as Ecosystem Restoration Communities for hands-on land healing, Global Ecovillage Network hubs experimenting with low-impact cooperative living, and transition groups reimagining resilient local economies. I also spent time in Auroville, the experimental township in southern India, a living laboratory of sustainable living, spiritual growth, and cooperative community. Beyond these structured spaces, I learned from tribal immersions in different countries to neighborhood circles, initiatives reconnecting growers and eaters through shared stewardship, timebanking groups, and Repair Cafés reviving the joy of mending what we already have. I also lived and volunteered with small NGOs, tribal communities, and collaborated in a range of informal gatherings.

Each experience opened me a little more, to strangers, to different worldviews, and I began noticing the threads that link us in our shared humanity. I began to see that beneath every culture, we carry the same longings and wounds: scarcity, isolation, fear, shame, domination. And as I learn to release these patterns, I watch them transform into something else: abundance, flow, forgiveness, collaboration. This has activated in me the sense that the impossible can become possible. I’m still learning how to do this every day in action.

Beginning Where I Am

Beginning where I am means honoring where I come from: a family that lived its ethics, growing organic food, eating from our own territory, supporting the people around us, being active in the life of our village, and tending spaces for togetherness and celebration. Those values are the ground I stand on today.

I’d long dreamt of working in Africa, to deepen my ecosystem practice in a tropical climate, live within another culture, and work at village scale. We quickly aligned our complementary strengths, mine in community-led regenerative landscape coordination, and his with Grassroots Economics’ practice of weaving abundance through commitment pooling. A collaboration took root; today I serve as Ecosystem Director at Grassroots Economics, working on the land, co-leading the Mnyumbuni Community Center, shaping bioregional stewardship, and stewarding cultural and artistic projects with children and adults.

I’m a hands-on steward on the ground. My role is to harmonize people’s gifts and weave it together in action and in common vision, setting clear frames, and letting roles overlap and evolve, so the work stays practical, relational, and alive. Right now, I notice many women leading the weaving of working as a whole (as bees would do) while many men focus on technical tasks, and I also see these patterns shifting: some men stepping into more relational work as some women lean into specialized roles. Honoring these evolving strengths, and letting roles overlap, swap, and adapt, helps us move in harmony and learn from one another.

On a last note on “beginning where I am” , strength, for me, comes as much from vulnerability as from action. Being perfectly imperfect and trusting the whole to hold our flaws, or more compassionately named “learning curves”, I keep practicing showing up as I am; the more I do that, the more kindness I meet. As a sensitive, community-oriented person, the group is my necessary container, where I feel safer, truer, and am gently guided toward wholeness through togetherness.

“Show up as you are; let the many hold what is tender. In the middle of the crowd, I become more human, and together we follow the North Star of wholeness.”

Weaving Practice Into Daily Life

I’ve noticed that in a world steeped in separation, what links us are our common threads. It’s easy to fixate on differences, preferences, dislikes, beliefs, “left and right”, but I keep finding that shared gifts and talents form the bridge to real connection. Harmony begins there.

I meet people through what I love, guided by values of care and growth, both personal and communal, with healing as the thread. In different moments of my life, this looks like shared cooking and reading circles, yoga lessons, meditation and compassionate communication practice, Buddhist mindfulness, crafting and repair, dancing, and other simple ways of making and moving together. When we take turns hosting, keeping things open and freely shared, reciprocity seems to arise on its own.

Some days someone offers a yoga session; another day someone shares sewing or repairing skills. One evening we read poetry in a small library; elsewhere a composting session unfolds; a shared kitchen fills with the smell of a neighbor’s meal. Over time, these rhythms feel like the heartbeat of a living economy where care is circulating through creative action. I’ve watched several circles blossom in parallel, what, at Grassroots Economics, we might call overlapping pools.

The Cosmo-Local Flow

For me, the global aspect naturally extends from the local. The global connection becomes a tool for learning and for weaving the common threads of our humanity and helping each other in what is possible from distance. What seems to matter most, though, is being inspired into action and showing what we’re doing, even when it feels small. I keep relearning how much beauty lives in the smallest act of kindness.

I value online gatherings, and I also see their risk: chasing what’s external instead of rooting inside. At Grassroots Economics, our community-of-practice calls and digital tools are built to help you connect from within, starting exactly where you are.

Being in humanity working together, hands on the ground with a common purpose such as making swales and growing food, or preparing a dance, a song to share in a local event, making art expressing our daily realities, building music instruments, sharing our personal or common concerns as human beings in this planet is what moves my heart since I was very young.

Thích Nhất Hạnh’s teachings also help me here: peace, compassion, and transformation begin in everyday acts, breathing, walking, caring for one another. I’m reminded that peace isn’t found in grand gestures.

In a world obsessed with doing, I find myself asking: what is “big,” really? My ego is nourished by scaling, by impact, by numbers; my centered self is nourished by presence, care, continuity and togetherness. And this unfolding isn’t entirely in my control, which is both a little frightening and profoundly alive.

Rooting Anywhere

I no longer look for a perfect place or culture where “people are nicer.” When I show up with kindness, openness, and courage, I often find those qualities meeting me. I’m learning I can root anywhere, starting exactly where I am.

I stopped looking for the perfect place. Every situation has limits, pros, and cons. What guides me is a simple practice of sinking in and listening for where my heart beats and where my path can keep completing itself. In Kilifi, with neighbors and friends, I keep discovering how unity can become a daily rhythm.

These days I pay attention to what in my routine feeds the story of separation: isolation, fear, busyness, and I gently lean toward connection. Sometimes that’s as simple as saying hello to a neighbor, co-hosting a meal with a friend, offering what I love to those around me or just asking for help when I feel weak. My fragility feels less like a flaw and more like a reminder of why we need one another. I experiment with being elegantly vulnerable, because that’s where trust seems to begin.

Paulo Freire’s insight in Pedagogy of the Oppressed resonates for me: liberation starts in dialogue, when we become both learners and teachers, transforming our reality together. What we call commitment pooling at Grassroots Economics feels like that dialogue made practical and actionable: an economy of shared learning and mutual support connected to what is important to attend in our world as it is today: care, building a safe planet on both the physical and social landscapes.

Friday 18th of July

The Dhome is a traditional Mijikenda practice of community gathering and collective decision-making, where people come together — often under a sacred tree — to share updates, reflect on challenges, celebrate progress, and plan for the future. It is held in a spirit of openness, where every voice matters, and actions are rooted in relationships. Closely linked to the Dhome is the practice of Mwerya — a rotating labor system where community members help one another with tasks like farming, building, or caregiving. The Dhome often becomes the space where Mwerya plans are made and coordinated, turning shared ideas into concrete acts of mutual support. Together, these practices keep the social fabric strong, grounded in cooperation, care, and local leadership.

Village wisdom,

Something we rehearse,

again and again,

under trees, in courtyards,

by firelight and song,

in the humble, holy act of gathering well.

As I entered the space, I felt a deep joy rising. I arrived alongside a few groups. I enter and greet everyone, first the cooking crew, where laughter mixed the smell of firewood and food. Then I joined others already gathered in circles, exchanging early reflections, setting intentions. The fireplace was being prepared with care, and all around me, the space felt lovingly tended. Some brought big cooking pots from home, others laid out mkekas (woven mats) and chairs, while others still arrived carrying drums, shakers, and the songs and dances that would guide us into rhythm. There was no separation between preparation and participation, everything was part of the gathering. Each of us brings what we can, the space becoming something more than any one of us could create alone.

It was a time to hear about all that has been built: farms, houses, trust, friendship … and to mourn the loss of some community members and celebrate the birth of new ones. We discussed the way forward: the Mwerias to come. And we refelected on the past.

As the collective discussion started, I watched each person invited to speak standing to introduce themselves, many with humor, most with theatrical presence and a deep sense of pride in representing the collective. There was a shared happiness in the air, a gratitude for being together and celebrating this moment. I appreciate the ease of expression all around me, the joy of simply showing up as we are, bringing what we have, and being fully seen in it. Later on, I sat beside the fire. We would have moments of discussions and having music and dance sessions one after another. We were now invited to turn our attention and gather in small groups to reflect on our shared vision, mission, goals, and action steps for the coming weeks and months. After the group discussions, we regrouped everyone to put in common what had been spoken in smaller circles, to connect the threads, and begin to prioritize the steps ahead in our common future actions.

A multigenerational moment

As we cycled with our bikes toward the Dhome, me, my partner, and our daughter, we passed a group of children who lit up with excitement. “Tonight there’s a celebration! There’s music!” they shouted with wide smiles, their energy already part of what was to come. Later, at the gathering, I noticed more children arriving, some still in their school uniforms, lingering at the edges with curious eyes, watching the dancing and singing unfold. They stood quietly at first, unsure whether they belonged, shy or simply taking time to understand the rhythm of what was happening. But as the evening stretched on — with its warmth, openness, and the natural invitation of music — they slowly stepped closer. Some sat among us, listening intently as the elders spoke. Others found their way into the circles, joining conversations, tapping along to rhythms, or showing off their own dance moves. A few picked up instruments with joy and played alongside others, their presence lighting up the space.

Discovering the Giriama culture

Over the years, I’ve lived and learned within different cultures and community-led collectives, each one revealing new dimensions of ritual, coordination, presence, and belonging. That journey has led me here, to this village where I now live on the Eastern Coast of Kenya, near Kilifi town, where I find myself deeply immersed in many layers of community life. I help organize intentional gatherings, contribute to defining collective work protocols, and participate in co-designing our shared ecosystem at the village scale. At the same time, I join in song and dance, exchange greetings and laughter, and slowly learn the local proverbs and sayings that carry the wisdom of the Giriama people. Here, connection lives in words, movement, sound, and the daily acts of showing up together.

Bring instruments, you will get music!

In our village, traditional dancing, singing, and the playing of local instruments have, in many places, been replaced by loudspeakers and modern disco music. Yet, the memory and movement of ancestral rhythms still live on, carried by a few dedicated villagers and chama members who continue to hold the traditional songs, steps, and sounds. A living archive of the local stories that I can witness and hear in all the Dhome gatherings I have participated in, like this one.

At one point, during this Dhome, while I was dancing, one of the mamas gently invited me under a lesso, a brightly colored piece of fabric that has so much meaning and many uses here. They are worn as skirts, headwraps, or shawls, used to carry babies, to bundle goods, to sit on, or even to decorate sacred spaces. Often printed with Swahili proverbs or blessings, they carry both intentions and local wisdom. As I stepped under the lesso, surrounded by laughter and rhythm, other women joined too, wrapping the cloth around us in a circle. Dancing together beneath it, felt like being welcomed into a quiet heartbeat of sisterhood, held by the joy, strength, and grace of the women around me.

On the Swahili Coast, women often express collective joy, support, or agreement through a distinct vocal gesture, a high-pitched, rhythmic ululation or trill that rises suddenly from a group, often in unison. It’s not spoken as a word, but sounded — a celebratory vibration released through the tongue and lips, sometimes called vigelegele in Swahili more broadly. I wish this sound would be the soundrack of this article as it keeps resonating in my head while I am writing these words.

Here,

we act for the commons,

we speak in rhythm,

we remember:

the future is shaped

by many hands and hearts.

I often wonder and ask myself: How can I live differently? How can I tend more honestly?

And this often happens to me while in the garden, collecting seeds. Birds sing their layered harmonies while the basil leaves, freshly pinched, release their scent like a quiet blessing. The earth under my feet feels both wild and familiar. Sometimes it happens to me also while cooking a meal for my family or while sharing tea after a day of collective work with neighbors.

It might be called "meditation in action." Not the kind of meditation that empties the mind, rather a meditation of noticing. Of letting the thoughts rise and fall. Tracking the tensions between what I feel and what I see. Sensing what is present in my body, in the landscape, in the room, in the structure of society around me.

I listen to what feels off-kilter. I observe patterns in my interactions, the ways we avoid presence or repeat inherited scripts. I track what feels just and what feels quietly distorted. Blending thought with sensation. Inviting the mind to meet the heart, not in abstraction, but in embodied awareness.

Asking myself: How do I transform what I notice into what I do? How can I translate a rhythm composed through sensing, witnessing, and feeling what is both tender and true to the fabric of my life? And how, through the art of stewardship, I and perhaps we all might come back into rhythm again?

A Broken Rhythm

Efficiency and the Displacement of Care

I see myself in a world increasingly optimized for speed, convenience, and delegation. I find that tasks once carried out by hand, by rhythm, by care, like cooking, cleaning, and tending our spaces, are now quietly outsourced. The story I’m sold is about efficiency. The promise is freedom. But beneath that surface hum lies something dissonant. Like a symphony with too many missing instruments, something in our collective rhythm is offbeat, skipping, straining, out of tune.

I acknowledge the tendency to forget that our daily actions were once our deepest rituals. Not burdens to be shed, but anchors of belonging. And when those rituals disappear, not from necessity but from disconnection, our lives begin to float, unmoored. I forget not just how to tend, but why it ever mattered. I wonder about the tempo of our own lives.

What is it that we call “creating jobs”? Is it just passing forward what we no longer tend? From there, I start to consider care as something we hire, not something we inhabit. Creating industries where help becomes a service, and presence becomes a privilege.

A housekeeper. A nanny. A therapist. A cleaner. These are noble, essential roles, but too often, they are not partnerships. They are placeholders for the relationships and rituals we’ve forgotten how to hold ourselves. This is not an indictment of hiring help. It is a call to listen more deeply. Is it part of a reciprocal web? Or is it a coping strategy for a life that has lost its rhythm?

Imagine a cleaner being paid not only for labor, but for the quiet weight of unfulfilled and delegated care? The economy records a paycheck, but not the rupture in relational coherence.

Yet it doesn’t have to be this way.

When Labor Becomes Substitution

What if job creation is becoming a cover for displaced care? Outsourcing not only labor, but relationships? Service replacing stewardship. Substitution replacing commitment. Roles becoming rigid, and presence becoming a line item in a budget.

What if the so-called “job market" would become a field of becoming, a place where each person is supported to unfold their unique gifts across the seasons of life? A place where pausing isn’t punished, and stepping back isn’t failure, but rebalancing.

Where the grower, the healer, the coder, the cleaner, each one is recognized as a steward of a different part of the commons. And for those offering work—employers, coordinators, weavers of roles—freedom must flow both ways. Letting someone go doesn’t have to mean betrayal. It can be a moment of clarity. A shift in season.

In a commitment-based economy, roles are not fixed identities, they are living agreements, realigned through shared purpose, not inertia. And I realise, when I allow for honest endings, I stop pretending at permanence. I start living in rhythm.

And when we move together, clearly, honestly, reciprocally, we begin to recompose the music of a shared life. One beat at a time.

Between Help and Handover

Not everyone believes in making their bed. Not everyone wants to cook, clean, or organize their home. Some feel deeply alive in other domains: teaching, healing, designing, growing food, slaying beasts, metaphorically or literally. For them, outsourcing domestic care isn’t laziness; it’s focus.

We live in ecosystems of differentiated gifts. Division of labor is not inherently exploitative. One person tends the fire while another hunts. One makes medicine, the other gathers water. This can be mutual, dignified, and deeply regenerative, if it’s rooted in reciprocity, consent, and coherence.

When someone hires help while saying “I’m creating jobs,” without recognizing the relational dissonance, it’s often not giving, it’s justifying. Yes, some help-giving belongs in a healthy commons, when it's woven through relationship and choice. But for a commons to truly thrive, all contributions must be visible, honored, and open to renegotiation.

Here I want to refer to Elinor Ostrom’s work as vital, and still so misunderstood. She shattered the myth that shared resources always collapse. She showed that what we call the “tragedy of the commons” isn’t inevitable, it happens when care disappears and extraction goes unchecked.

Communities can, and do, manage shared space like a well-tended fire. When they co-create boundaries, rules, and shared memory. Without that, we drift into systems of domination masked as freedom. With them, we remember: shared ownership is not the danger. The real danger is forgetting who holds what, who gives what, and who is carrying the weight of broken promises.

Stewardship and the Commons: Coordination over Control

This is what healing sounds like: Not scale, but coherence. Not perfection, but participation. Not noise, but a rhythm we can return to.

Small Acts, Sacred Tempo

It begins in the smallest acts: washing the dishes, making my bed, filling my spreadsheets, growing my garden, seeing a child becoming a teenager... It’s also choosing to sweep the floor like tending a shrine. To water the plants is like blessing the ground. To reply to an email with presence. It’s not about doing everything alone, it’s about participating in the rhythm of care.

Stewardship is not a duty. It is remembering. A quiet defiance in a world that rewards detachment. A return to coherence through intimacy.

When we reclaim stewardship, we’re not just restoring balance in our homes, we are redrawing the architecture of reality. The economy becomes a living nervous system, pulsing with offerings, fulfillments, and rest. The job market becomes a garden of roles, not a grid of boxes. The self stops posing as an island and remembers itself as a node, relational, rhythmic, and real.

A Cosmology of Care

When we reclaim stewardship, we are not just restoring balance in our households, we are redrawing the architecture of reality. We are replacing the cosmology of control with a cosmology of care. In this shift, the economy is no longer a battlefield of extraction, but a living nervous system of offerings, fulfillments, limitations, and renewal.

Stewardship teaches us that the universe is not made of things, but of relationships—sacred, rhythmic, metabolizing relationships.

This is what healing demands. Not scale, but coherence. Not perfection, but participation. It asks us not to dominate, but to tend.

And it begins where you are.

With your hands. Your choices. Your rhythms.

Make your bed. Reclaim your home. Seed a new economy.

One Beat You Can Reclaim Today

What is one beat you can reclaim today?

It might be the way you start your morning, how you fold your laundry, the tone of your voice in a meeting, or the choice to pause before outsourcing care. The rhythm of the commons lives in the seemingly small, because it is never really small. The way our life is composed in details is how the collective song is shaped.

When any task, humble or complex, becomes part of a greater whole, we are all composing again. When actions are reconnected to presence and presence to relationship, we rejoin the symphony. Not by effort alone, but by attunement. By remembering that to participate with intention is to tune our instrument.

So, reclaim your beat. Make one act today a note in the music of the commons. The song is still playing.

It is ours to tend.

Last week, Will Ruddick and I were invited to teach a class of 9-year-olds in Southern Spain about resource coordination and collective abundance. We weren’t sure what to expect but, what unfolded was one of the most moving and affirming experiences I’ve ever had.

We chose to follow the visionary approach taught by the Uganda Rural Development Training Program, a method rooted in helping people see themselves as part of a community capable of realizing their dreams together. It’s a pedagogy that doesn’t impose answers but opens space for shared imagination.

Each child received a full piece of paper and was invited to close their eyes and imagine a beautiful future for their community. Who was there? What were they doing? How did it feel? They had five quiet minutes to sketch what they saw.

Next, we asked them to write down something they could offer or help with, a gesture, a skill, an action from the heart. Then we all stepped outside where we formed a circle. One by one, the children described their drawings and shared their offerings, placing both into a communal basket at the center. We also brought out a spool of ribbon.

One child took the end, voiced their offering, and looked around. Whoever felt they could receive that offering raised a hand. The ribbon was gently tossed across the circle. The receiver then shared what they could offer in return, and passed the ribbon on. As the ribbon continued its journey, a web of reciprocity took shape, visible, tangible, playful. Laughter echoed. The circle came alive.

By the end, we laid the ribbon down carefully. We asked the children:
What could you accomplish if all this support was behind you? What if giving and receiving were how we build our world, every day?

I remember these intentions and dreams coming out : “Taking care of the ones who need it” “Taking care of endangered species” “Having people around us happy” “Travel the world with my best friend” “Cooking food with my mum to give food to others” …

Back in the classroom, we shared stories and images of Kenyan communities practicing rotational labor, seed sharing, mutual commitments. The children were amazed. One of them said, "They’re not poor, they have the whole village!"

That was the moment the deeper lesson landed:
True wealth is who comes when you ask for help.

This wasn’t just a school activity. It was a reminder of the world we already carry in our hearts: where abundance doesn’t mean having more, but being more together. Where every child’s vision matters. And where no one is alone in making their dream real.

For me, working with children in this way is not just heart work, it is essential. In times of uncertainty and ecological unraveling, sharing values of trust, collaboration, and intergenerational wisdom is a lifeline. It reconnects us to a kind of education that belongs to all of us, regardless of age. An education rooted not only in skills, but in relationships. In dignity. In possibility.

We believe that some kinds of learning should move across all ages and all settings, schools, homes, gardens, neighborhoods. They are the kinds of teachings that nourish the soul of a people.

The kinds that remind us:
We are all learners. We are all teachers. We are all in this together.

Land is a living relationship.
And in this moment of planetary and social fragmentation, it may also be our deepest path to healing.

In the dominant economic narrative, land is often framed as an asset—something to acquire, hold, flip, extract from, or speculate upon. But this view is not only reductive—it is destructive.

The Extraction Illusion

When we treat land as a commodity, we turn soil into spreadsheets.
We enclose what was once shared.
We erase memory.
And we erode the very ground that sustains life.

This extractive logic not only degrades forests and watersheds—it tears at the social fabric of communities.
It depletes the social soil: the trust, cooperation, and cultural memory that enable people to care for land—and each other—over generations.

A New/Old Way of Seeing

Across the Earth, wherever people lived and still live in relationship with land, we find communities practices as ways of stewarding land through mutual care, rotational labor, and shared promise. From the Mijikenda’s local traditions of Mweria and Dhome in Coastal Kenya, to the Choba Choba and Minga practices in Peru (for instance), these traditions reveal a truth still alive beneath our feet: land was never a commodity. It was a living relative, a partner in a continuous cycle of giving and receiving. Though the names and forms vary across cultures (see the attached list below), the essence remains universal—a testament to our ancestors' wisdom, and an invitation for us to remember and reweave these ways in our own time.

Land is not a possession. Land is a promise.

A promise to care.
A promise to be in right relation.
A promise to pass forward health, dignity, and abundance.

This is where healing happens:

• When land use becomes rooted in cultural wisdom.

• When land care becomes collective.

• When extraction gives way to reciprocity.

The Soil Beneath Our Society

If ecological soil holds water and nutrients, social soil holds meaning and memory.
It is composed of:

• Ancestral stewardship practices the rotational labor associations

• Community rituals, oral histories, and agreements.

• Acts of mutual aid, shared meals, seasonal gatherings.

When the social soil is compacted—by displacement, inequality, or commodification—it loses its sponge-like ability to absorb, hold, and release care over time.

I tend to think that as the physical sponge dries, so do the social connections. And I also believe that with patience, ritual, and commitment, it can be restored. Many practices and people around the world are actively commited

Land Stewardship as Collective Healing

In practice, this looks like:

• Pooling commitments, not just funds.

• Creating stewardship agreements, not private titles.

• Using community-issued services and offerings to recognize land care efforts—planting, restoring, sharing.

• Honoring stories and rituals that embed ethics into our relationship with place.

• Designing land use plans rooted in long-term intergenerational thinking—not quarterly profits.

This is the work of reweaving the social soil and restoring our role as stewards.

From Ownership to Belonging

The question is not: How can I own more land?
But: How can I belong to land more deeply?

Let us shift:

• From investment to intimacy.

• From extractive value to restorative participation.

• From private wealth to shared abundance.

We don’t need more landowners.
We need land keepers, land listeners, land healers.

Let us stop investing in land.
Let us invest in relationships—with soil, with spirit, with community.
Let us remember that true wealth is found not in control, but in connection.

Equally, the gut microbiome is also a dynamic and complex community of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and archaea, that inhabit the gastrointestinal tract. Similar to biomes, it functions as an ecological system, characterized by its unique environment, diverse microbial species, and interdependent relationships, all contributing to human health and metabolism.

Practices that enhance soil health, encourage crop diversity, and respect natural cycles resonate with the microbial art of digestion, where food becomes a medium for transformation and vitality.

Seed sovereignty is the fundamental right of communities to save, share, and plant seeds, caring for ecological balance, nutritional security, and cultural continuity. Diverse seed systems are ecological treasures, ensuring resilience by promoting biodiversity that supports soil health, pest resistance, and climate adaptability. Diversity supports functional ecosystems, enhancing their capacity to regenerate and thrive in the face of environmental challenges. Corporate Control and GMOs: The proliferation of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), seed patents, and corporate monopolies restricts farmers' rights to manage their seeds. Companies enforce intellectual property rights, limiting traditional practices of seed saving and sharing.

Biopiracy and Knowledge Privatization: Corporations exploit and privatize indigenous knowledge, undermining communal seed systems. This biopiracy threatens biodiversity and the cultural heritage of communities that have developed and maintained diverse seed varieties over generations.

Glyphosate Impacts: The widespread use of herbicides like glyphosate has detrimental effects on human health and the environment, compounding the challenges to seed sovereignty. Glyphosate's extensive application has led to environmental degradation and health concerns, further threatening traditional farming practices and seed diversity.
