The spread covers a lot of vintage synth architecture. Mercury-6/8 is their flagship “supersynth” line. For straightforward pads and leads, most listeners won’t hear the difference. Enable it in Edit > Preferences > Control Surfaces, tick “MCP HTTP Server (experimental)”, and copy the MCP URL and port into your LLM client. The primary use case the Ardour team leads with is accessibility: users with visual impairments can now direct a local AI to navigate sessions, trigger transport, and manage tracks through natural language. Windows repaint was rearchitected to be WM_PAINT-driven, which optimizes drawing when multiple heavy plugin editors are open simultaneously — synths, effects chains, meters all onscreen at once. Worst samples for Erosion

Already-distorted one-shots. The extra artifacts are harder to judge clearly. You are adding noise to noise, and the result is usually just a less-controllable version of whatever distortion was already there. If you cannot hear Erosion turn on and off clearly, the sample is wrong.

Dense full drum bounces. Stereo bounces with kick, snare, hats, and percussion all printed together. It is tougher to hear whether Erosion is helping the hats, the snare, or the kick specifically. You end up making a global decision about a multiband problem, and that decision is almost always too much or not enough.

The four-sound test set

You do not need a full kit to learn what Erosion sounds like. You need four sounds, in this order:

1. One closed hat — Erosion’s texture shows up fastest on bright percussion. Start here. Dial in Noise mode, push the frequency above 10 kHz, set amount to 15–30, and listen to what changes.

2. One clap — switch to the clap and notice how the artifacts cling to the transient. Same settings, different contour.

3. One snare top — shorter than a full snare, less body to compete with. The sweet spot for adding a touch of grit without crushing the snap.

4. One clean kick — subtle amount only. You are looking for edge on the transient, not distortion on the body. If the kick starts sounding fuzzy, pull back.

Four sounds. Two minutes. You will hear the effect more clearly than you ever will on a full drum bus.

Plugin reverbs are good enough now that the hardware question is not about quality. Every reverb manufacturer has a signature sound that is more than frequency response or decay shape. So it comes down mostly that most producers are buying the wrong units for the wrong reasons.

The conversation usually starts with “can hardware reverb still do something plugins can’t?” It’s a complicated answer and one nobody wants to hear: sometimes yes, sometimes no, and … it’s not what you think.

The reason they cannot explain it is that the improvement is not a single sonic quality. It is a combination of three things: manufacturer-specific algorithmic language, production immediacy, and contextual behavior that you only hear in a full mix.

Every reverb manufacturer has a signature that is more than frequency response or decay shape. It is an algorithmic language a way of handling modulation, diffusion, early reflections, and tail evolution that creates a recognizably consistent texture across all of its programs.

Yamaha speaks in metallic precision. Useful for specific sources percussion, anything that benefits from a harder, more defined reflections profile. Not a go-to for vocals, but invaluable when the source material matches.

The point: these are not interchangeable, and plugins only approximate some of them. Seventh Heaven captures Bricasti’s impulse responses but users consistently report it sounds “weird” compared to the hardware because IRs capture static snapshots of dynamic algorithms.

The M7’s tail evolves in real time based on the input signal. The plugin freezes a single iteration of that evolution and loops it.

The most common mistake in hardware reverb purchasing is buying two units that speak the same language.

Before buying hardware reverb, answer three questions:

One

Can you name the specific plugin deficiency you are trying to solve? If the answer is “it just sounds better,” you are responding to manufacturer language, not quality. Name the language you want — modulated, natural, dark, metallic — and buy the manufacturer that speaks it.

Two

Does your rack space or your budget constrain you more? If rack space is the constraint, buy one premium unit in the language you use most and supplement with plugins. If budget is the constraint, buy two or three inexpensive units with different languages and build a palette.

Three

Will you actually use the hardware, or will you default to plugins because they are already loaded? Hardware that sits powered off is the most expensive reverb you can buy. If your workflow is fully ITB and you are not already sending out to aux buses through converters, the hardware purchase needs to include the workflow change or it is a $4K impulse buy that becomes a $3K resale.

It is about accessing points that plugins come close but do not fully replicate, and doing it with enough \speed that you actually use the tool instead of reaching for the plugin out of habit.

Stop your new “mastering assistant” run things

If you’re going to use Ozone 12, don’t let the Master Assistant do it all. Use it as a second opinion. Otherwise your tracks will just never sound “that way”… you know that sound you hear every other established producers track sound like ? Has that different ring to it? Here’s your wake up call.

1. The Custom Flow Filter: Use the new “Custom” flow to lock out the Imager. Ozone loves to widen things by default, often destroying the center-image focus of your low-end.

2. Unlimiter Recovery: If you receive a mix that’s already been “sausage-ed,” use the Unlimiter first. It uses machine learning to reconstruct lost transients.

   It won’t fix baked-in distortion, but it can give the IRC 5 enough “breathing room” to actually work.

   Bass Control vs. Low End Focus: Use Bass Control for tonal balance (the “what”) and Low End Focus for the “how” (the punch vs. sustain). Using both simultaneously is a recipe for a phase nightmare.

The main difference

Serum is known for being clean, simple, and fast. You open it, pick or load a wavetable, shape it with filters, add movement with LFOs, and finish it with effects. Everything is laid out in a way that makes sense, which is one big reason it became the go-to synth for modern EDM sound design.
