In personal news: I’ve been working on eating more protein. For the last few weeks I’ve found myself especially fatigued, but since eating more protein for the last few days, I’ve been feeling more awake.

In reading news: I’m currently reading The Good Part by Sophie Cousens: large font in a paperback because apparently my eyes are tired. 😂 So far it’s really good! It’s about a young woman having a tough time with relationships and her career, so she wishes to “skip to the good part.” When she wakes she’s 40 with two kids, a husband, career, but she missed the entire decade plus of her life. Let me know if you’ve read it! 99 percent of the books I read are from indie authors, but this one is a traditionally published book I borrowed from the library.

He reaches for my hand as I step onto the dais. His palms are warm and slightly damp. He squeezes my fingers, a silent message of: See? We made it. It’s fine.

I don’t squeeze back. My hands are dead weight in his.

The priest, a man with a voice like polished marble, begins the ceremony. He speaks of unions and traditions, of legacies and the sacred bond between two families. I cannot fully listen, but what I hear is nothing about love. He talks about the ‘joining of names’ as if he’s reading a real estate contract.

Then, the air in the room changes. The music has stopped, the guests have leaned forward. This is the moment they’ve all paid for.

“Do you, Skyler Thompson, take Harley Matthews to be your lawfully wedded wife?” the priest asks, his voice echoing against the vaulted ceiling.

In a clear, confident voice, Skyler says, “I do.”

The priest turns to me. “And do you, Harley Matthews, take Skyler Thompson to be your lawfully wedded husband?”

The silence that follows is a vacuum, yet Skyler’s smile is still there, expectant, hovering on the edge of his future.

I look directly into his eyes—the hazel eyes that I used to think were my safe space. But this time, I see the cowardice there. The months of lies, the ‘bribes’ disguised as gifts, Amanda’s presence, the dumpsters behind the club. I see the man who traded my heart for his father’s approval.

“No.”

I’m also planning on doing a special project, in honor of my (not-so-baby) baby Trixie. She passed but lived a long life despite being geriatric with chronic illnesses. Anyway, my idea is to do some sort of book project, and then I’ll donate 100 percent of the proceeds on release month to Second Chance Cats of West Michigan. Per their website:

If this is the first you’re hearing of The Wrong Name on Valentine’s, it’s a marriage-in-crisis where the hero says another woman’s name while falling asleep. Features, betrayal, OW drama, grovel, and redemption. No physical cheating. I personally wouldn’t consider it emotional cheating either, but that can be subjective.

I’m also working on developmental edits for Vows We Broke (a full length book). Line edits for Rowdy & Joy (also full length), aannnnnd I recently sent an Easter short story/ light novella to the developmental editor. The Easter story is titled The Wrong Date on Easter. It’s 18,000 words, compact, and features a tortured hero, best friend’s brother, OW drama, family unity, overheard trope, and grovel! More on that to come soon. (Patreon/Ream/Inkitt, you will get it in the coming week). I’ll likely set preorders for March and will nail down the date once I at least get developmental edits back. Because it’s so short, I want to make sure that the character and plot arcs are solid first.

My last topic is about I Do, You Don’t.

I Do, You Don’t will always have a special place in my heart, but it’s taught me some valuable lessons. I put waaaay too many hints and plots into too little of a book without any context. My goal with I Do, You Don’t was to have it read like a soap opera. Like when you’re a kid home from school and you pop on a soap and have absolutely no idea what’s going on but you’re entranced and can’t stop watching. I Do, You Don’t has always been a planned trilogy, and while my intention was to give hints about backstory and plots to come in the upcoming books, it unfortunately made reading it confusing and took away from Delilah and Gideon’s story. Plus the micro-mistakes on consistency and mistakes in/on editing. In the short time since it’s been released, I’ve grown as a writer and have discovered editors I trust and love.

So that leads me to my final announcement: ‌I have been working on redoing I Do, You Don’t! You may have read it, you may not have, but either way, I can do better. It’s undergone an extensive overhaul. The beginning is completely different; I’ve scraped a subplot (or two), focused on the main plot, and added more length to the novella. It’s now going to be pushing full-length. I’m still writing it, so I’m not sure exactly how long it’ll be, but once I am done with it, and have gone through self-edits, I am passing it off to a developmental editor and ensuring that it’s the best it can be.

Because I am also editing Vows We Broke, Rowdy and Joy, and The Wrong Date on Easter, that does mean I Do, You Don’t is at the bottom of my priority list. But I am working on it here and there and am hopeful to get it out by the summer.

Patreon/Ream/Inkitt will get the entire book first, but for now I’ll give everyone the UNEDITED first chapter. I’ll also be doing ARCs when it’s ready.

• Don’t pay so much attention to the quality of the prose but more so the bones of it.

Lara:

Mason jars aren’t exactly crystal candelabras, but they’ll do. I lift one toward the sunbeam cutting through the antique store’s dusty window. Beautiful enough. The price tag dangles from a twine string saying they are $2.50 each. Perfect for our centerpieces. I’ve already done the math. At twenty tables, three jars each, plus a few extras for inevitable casualties, it’s affordable, which is something I value. The wedding industry thinks you need diamond-encrusted everything to prove your love. I think differently.

“These have character,” Drew says, running her fingers over a jar’s slight imperfections. My sister always knows exactly what to say. “Very you, Lara. Unpretentious but special.”

We filter through the aisles. With my sister, this whole wedding thing feels less overwhelming.

“If we wrap these with twine and add wildflowers, they’ll look rustic-chic,” I say, already visualizing our reception tables. “And the total comes in three hundred dollars under budget.”

Drew grins. “Look at you, financial consultant even on your wedding day.”

“Some habits die hard.” I place the jar carefully in my basket. “Besides, starting a marriage in debt for centerpieces that will be forgotten by dessert seems ridiculous.”

The bell above the door chimes. Gideon’s cologne reaches me first—expensive, subtle, woodsy, and instantly grounding.

“Sorry we’re late,” Gideon calls out, his voice warm. “Conference call ran long.”

Turning, I see him, and the morning’s tension snaps. He looks handsome as always, his dark hair slightly tousled from the wind, blue eyes bright. I don’t overthink it. I just move.

I cross the distance between us in three strides, practically colliding with him. My arms loop around his neck, pulling him down, and his mouth meets mine with a familiarity that feels like coming home. It’s a slow, intimate kiss, his hands gripping my hips to haul me flush against him, ignoring the fact that we’re in a public shop.

When we finally pull away, his eyes glint. “Hey, babe. Missed you too.”

For those precious seconds, he’s the only thing I see. When I step back, I smooth my hands down his arms, still smiling.

That’s when the figure standing quietly behind him comes into focus.

Delilah.

My smile falters as my eyes drop to what she’s wearing. A white summer dress.

“There’s the beautiful bride,” Delilah sings out, air-kissing both my cheeks. Her lips never actually touch my skin. “Shopping for treasures, I see.”

She manages to make “treasures” sound like “trash.” That’s the thing with Delilah. I know what she means, and she knows what she means, but because her tone is light and her words are cheerful, my darling fiancé has no idea.

Drew slides next to me, a protective presence. “Is she seriously wearing white to a wedding shopping trip?” she whispers, her breath warm against my ear.

I give a subtle shake of my head. Not now.

“We’ve found some lovely options for centerpieces,” I tell Gideon as he approaches, his arm automatically sliding around my waist. The weight of it is reassuring.

Meanwhile, Delilah picks up one of my carefully selected mason jars, holding it between two fingers like it might be contaminated. “How quaint. Very thrift-store-y.” Her upper lip curls. “Though I suppose these kinds of economical choices have their charm.”

“I think they’re perfect,” Gideon says, looking at the jar with genuine interest. “Creative and personal.”

Delilah’s smile tightens. “Cheryl used Waterford crystal vases at their anniversary party last year. They caught the light so beautifully.” She places a hand on his arm, fingers lingering. “Remember, Gid?”

“They were stunning,” he agrees, then turns to me. “We could look at some crystal options if you want, babe. My treat.”

The “my treat” makes my stomach twist. It’s not about the money. It’s about the principle—the fact that I’ve built my entire career teaching women financial independence.

“I appreciate the offer,” I say carefully, “but I’ve budgeted for these, and they fit the vision I have for our day.” I keep my tone light, though something in me wants to snap. “Plus, they’re environmentally friendly. We can donate them afterward.”

“So practical,” Delilah says with a tight laugh. “Always thinking of others. That’s our Lara.” The possessive “our” grates like sandpaper.

Gideon blind to the undercurrents, smiles and kisses my temple. “That’s why I’m marrying her.”

I catch Drew’s eye. She’s making a subtle gagging motion that almost breaks my composure.

We move toward the wildflower section, where dried lavender and baby’s breath are bundled in simple arrangements. I reach for a bundle of delicate purple flowers.

“These would look beautiful with the jars,” I say, picturing the simple elegance.

Delilah sighs loudly. “Wildflowers are so common. Don’t you think something imported would better suit Gideon’s status? After all, he’s hosting half of the city’s elite.”

“He’s not hosting them. We are.” The correction slips out before I can stop it. “And wildflowers have meaning to us.” I don’t explain that they remind me of the lake cabin where Gideon and I first said “I love you.”

“Of course,” Delilah says. “I just want your special day to reflect both of you.”

The way she says “both of you” makes it clear she means “him.”

“The flowers at the Moore wedding last month cost a fortune,” she continues, addressing Gideon directly now. “But when Jack’s mother saw them, she cried. In a good way.”

Gideon checks his phone absently, nodding. “Whatever Lara wants. It’s her vision.”

“Our vision,” I correct gently, but I’m not sure he hears me.

Drew disappears but then reappears with a bundle of dried eucalyptus. “These smell amazing and last forever,” she says loudly, drowning out whatever Delilah is now whispering to Gideon. “Like a good marriage built on mutual respect and boundaries.” She emphasizes the last word while staring pointedly at Delilah.

I bite my lip to keep from laughing and take the eucalyptus. “Perfect addition.”

Delilah’s smile doesn’t waver as she asks Gideon, “Remember when we decorated your dad and Cheryl’s anniversary party? Your mother said my taste was impeccable.”

“You’ve always had great taste, Del,” he agrees easily.

Something cold settles in my stomach. Not jealousy; I’m too practical for that. Unease, maybe. The way they share memories I’m not part of, the casual intimacy of their history. Truthfully, I hate it. Makes me feel insecure when I’m not.

I gather my selections and head to the register, mentally recalculating my budget. Drew follows with more jars, bumping my shoulder supportively.

“You okay?” she asks quietly.

“Fine.” It comes out clipped.

“She’s acting like she’s the bride.”

“She wishes she was.” I realize how petty that sounds the moment it leaves my lips.

Drew raises an eyebrow. “Does she? Because if so, we might have a bigger problem than her wardrobe choices.”

I watch Delilah laughing at something Gideon said, her hand still on his arm, white dress glowing in the sunlight streaming through the window. They look like they could be on a wedding cake themselves.

Luckily, I’m saved from responding by the buzzing of Drew’s phone. She glances at the screen and makes a face.

“Another mysterious message from our possibly-mobster brother,” she mutters, showing me the text.

“Business handled. Don’t worry.”

We exchange a look loaded with shared understanding. Calvin’s texts are always cryptic, always vaguely ominous. Our brother went from small-town troublemaker to successful businessman almost overnight three years ago. Neither of us asks too many questions about his “import/export business” or why his office has more security than a military base.

“What do you think it means this time?” I ask, keeping my voice low.

Drew shrugs. “Who knows? Last week he sent me ‘Package delivered. Sleep well.’ Like he’s some kind of guardian angel with questionable methods. I didn’t even know what he was talking about!”

“As long as he shows up to give me away without a police escort, I’m good.” I try to make it sound like a joke, but we both know there’s truth behind it. And because our father passed away last year, Calvin’s the best I’ve got.

“At least we know he’d take care of Delilah if necessary,” Drew says with a pointed look.

“Drew! Don’t even joke about that.” But I can’t help the small, guilty smile that escapes.

Everyone joins us as the cashier finishes ringing our items up. The total is reasonable. It’s even a bit under what I’d budgeted. I nod approval, pulling out my credit card before Gideon can offer to pay. Again.

Delilah watches the transaction with thinly veiled disapproval. I’ve just about reached my Delilah tolerance limit when Gideon gently touches my elbow to guide me toward the shop window so we’re alone. His touch still sends warmth through me, despite the afternoon’s irritations.

“Hey,” he says softly. “Everything looks great. You have amazing taste.”

The compliment soothes some of my frayed nerves. “Thanks. I think it’ll all come together nicely.”

He hesitates, and I immediately sense what’s coming isn’t something I want to hear.

“I wanted to ask you something,” he begins, his voice taking on the careful tone he uses when he knows I might object to what he’s about to say. “Would you mind if Delilah came to your dress fitting next week?”

The request hits like a glass of ice water to the face. The dress fitting is the one thing that should be sacred, private, mine.

“Why would she need to be there?” I ask, struggling to keep my tone even.

“She’s my oldest friend, and it would mean a lot to me.” He squeezes my hand, blue eyes earnest. “She knows fashion, and she wants to be involved.”

Every cell in my body wants to protect this one experience from Delilah’s critiques and white outfits and possessive touches. But Gideon is looking at me with such hope, such innocent obliviousness between the women in his life.

“I don’t care,” I say, but my voice lacks conviction. I step back slightly, creating space between us. “If it means that much to you.”

“Thank you. It’s important to me that the people I love get along.”

Love. The word hangs between us, and I wonder suddenly if he means it differently when he says it about her.

Mustering as neutral of a face as I can, I bridge the distance between Delilah and I and ask if she’d like to join us.

I note the smirk of triumph firsts. Then, she holds my gaze and says, “I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

Across the room, Drew catches my eye and slowly shakes her head in warning. But it’s too late.

It’s been a whirlwind of a year for me. Lots of ups and downs, but at the end of the year, I’m thankful for each and every reader.
