We travel not only to see different places, but to encounter different ways of being. There are moments when another landscape makes us aware of the pace at which we have been living our own lives. We realise how rarely we stop simply to observe something without immediately photographing it, explaining it or moving on. We are so often thinking about what comes next that we forget to inhabit the moment already in front of us.

Lately, I have found myself trying to bring some of that attention home. The moments in this film belong to different days, but they carry something of the same feeling: rain falling across my balcony, my hands in the garden adding soil around a plant, the bougainvillea moving in the air, coffee being made in the morning, breakfast prepared, cheese and garlic bread warming in the kitchen, a book opened beside a cup of coffee, friends across a café table, another morning and another coffee, rain again in the evening, a lamp switched on, a candle lit.

None of these moments would ordinarily qualify as an occasion. That is exactly what I have started to love about them.

I have started romanticising my ordinary days.

Not by pretending they are perfect, or turning every mundane moment into something profound, but by allowing myself to notice them. By treating the small rituals of a day as worthy of attention. By letting a cup of coffee be more than a cup of coffee, a garden be more than something that needs tending, an evening at home be more than the end of another busy day.

Gardening has become one of those rituals for me. There is something about putting my hands into the soil that quietens the noise in my head. When thoughts are tangled or emotions have nowhere obvious to go, gardening gives them somewhere to settle. I concentrate on something simple: adding soil, tending to a plant, clearing away what needs to be cleared. The work is physical and repetitive, and that gives my mind room to wander without becoming overwhelmed by its own thoughts. Sometimes I begin gardening with one feeling and finish with another. Nothing outside me may have changed, but something inside has had the opportunity to move.

Plants are comforting companions for this reason. They do not ask us to explain ourselves. They do not need us to arrive in a particular mood. They simply need tending. We water them, add soil, watch new leaves appear and notice when something is flowering. They remind us that care does not always have to be dramatic. Sometimes it is simply a quiet, repeated act, done because something matters to us.

The same feeling exists in the small rituals of a morning. I love making coffee slowly, preparing breakfast, letting the kitchen fill with its familiar smells before sitting down with a book. There is something comforting about allowing the beginning of the day to have a little space around it. We so often wake up already reaching towards everything that needs to be done that we forget how lovely it can be to begin with something that asks nothing from us except our attention.

A book and a cup of coffee can be enough. The coffee can cool a little. A few pages can take longer than expected. The morning can pass without being measured by how much has been accomplished. We don’t always need to turn our mornings into something productive for them to be valuable. There is pleasure in doing one thing at a time, especially when so much of modern life encourages us to divide our attention between several things at once.

And then there are the days when being present means being with other people. Sitting in a cafe with friends, sharing food and conversation, letting an afternoon unfold without needing it to be particularly productive. Romanticising our lives should never mean making them smaller or more solitary. There is beauty in noisy cafés as much as quiet gardens, in long conversations as much as solitary mornings. The point is to be present enough to actually experience them.

Then, when evening comes, I have another ritual that I particularly love. I begin switching off the bright lights. It is a small thing, but it signals that the day is changing. The harshness of daytime disappears gradually. One light goes off, then another, until the room is illuminated only by softer lamps and the warm glow of a candle. I love the feeling of deliberately making the house quieter before going to bed, as though I am gently telling myself that there is nothing more I need to chase tonight.

A bedtime ritual becomes a kind of boundary. The day has been lived, whatever it contained. There is no need to solve everything before sleeping. We can leave some thoughts unfinished. We can let some questions wait until morning. We can lower the lights, make the room warm and quiet, light a candle and allow ourselves to come down from the noise of the day.

These little rituals have begun to give my days a rhythm. Coffee tells me that morning has begun. Soil beneath my hands brings me back to the present. A book gives me somewhere quiet to go. A table with friends reminds me that life is meant to be shared. Turning off the bright lights tells me that evening has arrived. A candle tells me that it is time to soften.

The prayer flags in Bhutan were moving in the wind, and that is what I remember most clearly, movement does not have to mean rushing. We can move through our days and still leave room for stillness. We can have plans and ambitions and places to go, and still notice the rain. We can carry difficult thoughts and emotions and still find a little peace in the garden. We can have full days and still create a quiet ending to them.

The clips in this little film come from different days, but they belong together because they are fragments of the same kind of life. Bhutan and a balcony. Mountains and bougainvillea. Prayer wheels and coffee machines. Cafes and books. Rain and candlelight.

We do not need every day to be remarkable. Most of our lives will be made from small things. A breakfast. A page. A flower. A conversation. A cup of coffee. A rainy evening. The soft light of a bedroom at the end of the day. Maybe these are not insignificant parts of our lives waiting to be replaced by something more exciting. Maybe they are the life itself.

I’ve started romanticising my ordinary days because I don’t want to rush past them and realise later that I was waiting for my life to begin while it was already happening. There is beauty in the grand journeys, in the mountains and unfamiliar places, and there is beauty in home, too. I want to be there for both.

For once, I wasn’t thinking about what came next. I was just sitting there, listening to the birds between pages, feeling the warmth of the morning on my skin, and letting myself enjoy the moment without rushing through it. Maybe that’s the thing about mornings like this. They don’t ask for much. Just that you notice them. I think I’ll start making more little videos like this — capturing the mornings, books, places and moments I want to hold on to.

The gardens are still overflowing, tomatoes continue ripening in warm sunlight, bees drift lazily between flowers, and evenings remain long enough for open windows. Children still return home with grass on their shoes, books are carried into gardens, and somewhere someone is slicing peaches over the kitchen sink because they are too ripe to eat anywhere else. Summer is still here, and yet August feels different.

I’ve often wondered why this month carries a feeling unlike any other. Why do we suddenly reach for our cameras more often? Why do we find ourselves lingering over sunsets that would have gone unnoticed in June? Why do we begin pressing flowers between book pages, preserving recipes, buying notebooks, collecting postcards, or wishing we could somehow bottle the warmth of an ordinary afternoon? Nothing has ended, and yet something inside us has already begun saying goodbye. Summer is still here, but we can feel it slipping away— the long evenings, the warm afternoons, the flowers, the slow, unhurried days. As summer begins to disappear, we suddenly notice that the year is slipping away with it. There are only four months left. August is the month that lets us watch a season become a memory while we are still living inside it.

June never asks this of us. June is hopeful, almost reckless in its confidence, believing there will always be another bright morning waiting just around the corner. July feels equally carefree, stretching itself across endless afternoons as though time has forgotten how to move. August knows better. Without announcing itself, it begins changing the smallest details of the world. The light softens, evenings arrive a little earlier than they did last week, hydrangeas grow heavy beneath their own blossoms, blackberries appear almost overnight, and swallows gather quietly on telephone wires before journeys we cannot yet imagine. Nothing feels different enough to grieve, but everything feels different enough to notice.

I think that’s why August has always felt strangely emotional. Not because summer is ending, but because this is the first month that teaches us endings don’t always arrive dramatically. Sometimes they come disguised as gentler light, cooler evenings and the quiet realisation that these ordinary days won’t last forever. Psychologists often describe nostalgia as something we experience after an event has passed. We remember childhood homes, old friendships, forgotten summers and holidays long since packed away into photographs. August seems to ignore that rule. It allows us to feel nostalgic for the present. While the season is still unfolding around us, we begin looking at it as though it already belongs to the past.

An ordinary afternoon suddenly becomes something worth remembering. The kettle whistles while a breeze moves through open curtains. Laundry dries slowly on the washing line. A neighbour’s cat sleeps beneath the hedge. Someone cycles home with flowers in a basket. A favourite novel lies face down because the evening light has become too beautiful not to watch. None of these moments ask for attention, yet somewhere deep inside us a quiet voice whispers, remember this. Beautiful days rarely announce themselves. They reveal their importance only afterwards, when all we have left are fragments— a particular scent carried on warm air, the taste of peaches eaten standing in the kitchen, birds circling against a pale evening sky, or sunlight stretching across old wooden floors. Memory has always been strangely selective. It rarely keeps the spectacular. Instead, it treasures the ordinary.

Maybe that’s why we instinctively preserve things in August. We dry herbs from the garden, write down recipes we’ve made all summer, press flowers between heavy books, and save tickets, postcards, menus, letters, and photographs. We aren’t really collecting objects. We’re collecting evidence that this season once existed exactly as we remember it. That thought stayed with me while putting together this month’s little collection. I didn’t want to create another productivity planner or another challenge asking us to squeeze every last drop from summer before autumn arrived. August doesn’t ask us to become someone new. It simply asks us to pay attention. So instead, I made a few little things for the month— things that might find their way onto a desk, inside a journal, or between the pages of a favourite novel.

I can’t think of a month that embodies that feeling more completely than August. It reminds us that endings need not be dramatic to matter, and that part of beauty lies in knowing we cannot hold onto it forever.

That’s why this month lingers in our memories long after it has passed. Not because extraordinary things happened, but because ordinary ones were suddenly illuminated. A warm evening, an open window, the smell of basil growing in a pot, a rabbit darting through long grass, the last bouquet from the garden— these are the things that remain with us. So before September arrives with its fresh notebooks and eager beginnings, stay here a little longer. Leave the windows open. Read one more chapter beneath a tree. Make something from the season while it’s still generous. Watch the evening light move slowly across the room.

By the time September arrives, we’ll already be talking about “this summer”. August simply reminds us to enjoy it while we still can.

Work has been busier than usual lately, and I wasn’t sure I’d have an essay to share this week. I had every intention of writing about literature, as I usually do. I’d been carrying around a few ideas all week, waiting for the right evening to sit down with them. Each day seemed to slip away a little faster than the last, and before I knew it, another week had almost gone by. I kept telling myself I’d get to it tomorrow. I missed writing more than I expected. It’s become one of the few moments in my week where everything else falls away, and I have the chance to slow down and make sense of my own thoughts. After a few days, I realised I wasn’t really thinking about books at all. Every time I tried to return to the essay I’d planned, my thoughts wandered somewhere else. Rather than forcing my way back to it, I decided to follow where those thoughts were leading me.

As I grow older, I notice the things I admire have quietly shifted. When I was younger, I thought an interesting life looked impressive from the outside. I admired people who always seemed busy, who were constantly working towards something, who always had another achievement to celebrate. Their lives looked exciting, and I assumed that was what a meaningful life was supposed to be. That’s why this week caught me by surprise.

The days had been long, and by evening I had little left to give. Every evening I’d make a cup of coffee, open my laptop and tell myself, “Tonight I’ll write.” I’d sit there for a few minutes, type a few sentences, delete them, write another, close the document, and tell myself I’ll try again tomorrow. It wasn’t that I had nothing to say. If anything, I had too many scattered thoughts and not enough quiet to gather them into something that felt worth sharing. The more I tried to force an essay out of myself, the further away it seemed to drift. I kept wondering for a while whether I should skip this week altogether.

What caught me off guard wasn't that I couldn't write. It was how much I missed it. Writing has quietly become something I look forward to. It's one of the few times I slow down enough to understand what I've actually been thinking. I don't always realise what I believe about something until I've written it down. Losing that space, even for a few days, made me realise how much it means to me. Without it, I noticed something else creeping back in, the same restlessness I used to mistake for ambition. Without that pause to slow down, my days just filled up faster, one task pushing into the next, with no room to actually notice any of it. It was almost funny. Here I was, living out exactly the kind of busy, chasing life I used to admire, and hating every minute of it.

This is what made me stop and think about the people I actually admire now. Growing older, I've realised they aren't necessarily the ones juggling the most or achieving the most. On the contrary, I find myself drawn to people who know how to make others feel welcome. People who recommend a book because they genuinely loved it rather than because everyone else is reading it. People who remember small details about others. People who have learned how to create a life that feels calm rather than one that looks impressive.

None of those qualities would ever appear on a resume, and they’re unlikely to attract much attention online. Yet they’re often the people I remember long after we’ve met. There’s something deeply reassuring about someone who isn’t trying to convince the world they’re living well. They just are.

These are the same unhurried, ordinary people I keep meeting in older novels, characters who never perform for anyone. Whether it's Jane Austen, Elizabeth Gaskell or George Eliot, what always surprises me isn't just the story itself, but the amount of space these writers give to ordinary life. Their characters stroll, pen letters, call on neighbours, sit in drawing rooms, and let conversations unfold without urgency. Entire chapters pass where nothing particularly dramatic happens, yet they never feel empty.

I don't think that's because life was simpler. It certainly wasn't. Yet those novels seemed to understand something we often forget, ordinary life is worth paying attention to. A conversation isn't simply what happens between important events. A walk isn't just a way of getting somewhere. They are the moments that quietly shape a life. I sometimes wonder whether we've become uncomfortable with that idea.

Maybe that’s what struck me about those people in the first place, they’d quietly opted out of a mindset the rest of us take for granted. We speak endlessly about productivity, ambition and success, but much less about contentment. We tend to celebrate constant builders and achievers, but rarely the ones who’ve quietly created a life they actually love. At some point, we began treating enjoyment as something that has to earn its place.

I catch myself doing it all the time. I’ll sit down with a novel I’ve been looking forward to reading, and before I’ve finished the first chapter another voice starts asking whether I should be reading something more useful instead. A biography. A business book. Something that promises to make me more productive. The same thing happens elsewhere too. Reading becomes a challenge. Walks become exercise to track. Hobbies become businesses. Even rest can leave us feeling guilty, as though we should have earned it before allowing ourselves to enjoy it. Writing hadn't been any different. Somewhere along the way, I'd started feeling as though every essay had to justify itself. It wasn't enough to simply enjoy writing it. It had to be thoughtful, polished and somehow worth everyone's time. The more I worried about whether it would be good enough, the harder it became to simply sit down and write.

Looking back, I think that quiet pressure weighed on me more than I realised and maybe that's exactly the way of thinking I've been questioning all along. Not every week needs a perfect essay. Sometimes a quiet reflection is enough. It's the same lesson those old classics keep teaching me: ordinary and unpolished doesn't mean unworthy.

It’s one of the reasons I keep returning to them, not because I wish I'd lived in another century, or because I imagine life was somehow easier then. Every generation has carried its own burdens, and those books remind me that an ordinary day doesn’t need to be extraordinary to be meaningful. A long conversation, an afternoon spent reading, cooking dinner without rushing, or simply sitting quietly by the window aren’t distractions from life. They are life.

Growing older has changed something else in me too. Not what I want from life, but what I notice. These days, the lives I admire aren’t necessarily the busiest or the most impressive. They’re the ones that leave room for books, conversation, curiosity and the ordinary moments that rarely make it into anyone’s highlights.

I didn’t always understand why old classics spent so much time on ordinary life. I think I’m beginning to. Age brings a quiet realisation that the ordinary was never small to begin with.

The older I get, the more I realize Jane Austen wasn’t warning us about Mrs. Bennet at all. I think she was quietly asking us to bring our attention to the parent we almost never question.

If you spent any time in classic book spaces, you’ll know exactly who we love to hate. We love to laugh at the nerves, cringe at the schemes and completely look past the quietest room in the house.

Everyone remembers Mrs. Bennet as the embarrassing parent. From the very first chapter of Pride and Prejudice, she is the book’s ultimate comic relief. She is loud, hysterical, painfully short-sighted and completely consumed by the business of marrying off her daughters. Whether she is sending Jane on horseback through the rain in the hope of keeping her at Netherfield long enough to increase her proximity to Bingley, or loudly discussing eligible bachelors across a ballroom, she makes everyone, including the reader, cringe.

It’s easy to dismiss her. In fact, Austen almost invites us to do that. She occupies so much space, makes so much noise and draws so much attention to herself that we as readers rarely stop to ask a much more uncomfortable question: who really benefits from us looking only at her?

Because beneath the comedy, Austen is asking us to look somewhere else. The real failure in the Bennet household isn’t the parent making all the noise. It’s actually the one quietly doing nothing.

To see why, we have to look more closely at the man hiding behind the book's sharpest wit.

The Illusion of the Sarcastic Observer

In the beginning, when we first meet Mr. Bennet, he feels like our refuge. In a house filled with frantic matchmaking, endless nerves and youthful chaos, he remains the calm one. His wit is effortless, his observations are sharp, and his dry humour makes him feel modern in a strange way , as though someone with twenty-first-century sensibilities has wandered off into a Regency drawing room. While everyone else loses their composure, he retreats into his library, watches the spectacle unfold from sidelines and delivers the perfect sarcastic remark every single time.

“You mistake me, my dear. I have a high respect for your nerves. They are my old friends.”

It’s one of the funniest lines in the book —and one of the first signs that Mr. Bennet’s wit often comes at his wife’s expense. It’s easy to have an urge to sit beside him, laugh with him, and mistake his detachment for wisdom.

Then one day, you decide to reread the book , and it simply isn’t that funny anymore. Instead, you begin to notice what Austen expected of him as a father, and suddenly the whole narrative shifts.

Quiet neglect is far more dangerous than loud and embarrassing panic. Mrs. Bennet’s flaws are mostly out in the open for all to see . They can be anticipated, managed and often compensated for by her sensible older daughters, but beneath all her embarrassing behaviour lies a reality she only understands far better than anyone else in that house.

Because of the entail, her five daughters could end up losing their home and financial security the moment Mr. Bennet dies. Her obsession with marriage isn’t simply a vanity. It’s a clumsy, desperate attempt to secure a future for her daughters in a world that offers women no control over their own.

As she declares:

“If I can but see one of my daughters happily settled at Netherfield and all the others equally well married, I shall have nothing to wish for.”

We usually read this as comic exaggeration. But beneath the theatrics that is a woman measuring security in the only currency known to her. Mr. Bennet understands the exact same reality, but he simply chooses to laugh at it.

The Danger of the Detached Intellectual

I don’t think Austen was only writing about a flawed father. I think she was writing about a kind of person we still actively admire today: the detached intellectual, the sarcastic observer, the person who always watches the problem, comments on it from afar brilliantly and somehow never feels the responsibility to fix it.

Mr. Bennet mistakes cynicism for wisdom.

After his unhappy marriage, he quietly disengages from his family life instead of making an effort to repair it. His intellect becomes a shield rather than a responsibility—a way to entertain himself by mocking his wife’s poor judgement instead of protecting his daughters from it. His home becomes a theatre, his wife becomes an endless source of amusement, and his younger daughters are little more than actors in a comedy he watches from a comfortable distance with detached amusement.

Withdrawal of this kind often looks like wisdom when someone else is paying the price. It’s a privilege to sit in the library and laugh at the world when your own survival isn’t the thing on the line—but his daughters don’t have that luxury.

Remember when Elizabeth begged him not to let Lydia go to Brighton? She wasn’t simply expressing her sisterly concern. She understood exactly what Lydia’s recklessness could cost them. She warns her father that allowing Lydia to go could end up exposing the entire family to disgrace. Elizabeth doesn’t merely predict embarrassment. She predicts a catastrophe. In a society where a family’s reputation determines a woman’s future, one scandal could close every respectable door.

Mr. Bennet understands it too, yet he refuses to intervene- not because he believes Lydia will behave well, but because any intervention would require effort. It would mean confronting his wife, disappointing Lydia, and stepping into the chaos he spent years avoiding. Instead, he chooses his peace over responsibility, leaving the consequences to everyone else to bear.

The High Cost of Silence

Later, we see that Lydia’s elopement finally forces Mr. Bennet out of the library and into the real world. It is actually the first moment in the book when his wit can no longer shield him from the consequence. He goes to London to find Lydia and fails entirely. He realizes that his sarcasm cannot negotiate with Wickham, his intelligence cannot repair his daughter’s reputation, and his dry humour, which once made him the most entertaining person in Longbourn, proves utterly useless when his family needs him most.

It’s Mr. Darcy, who quietly does the difficult work. Darcy searches for Lydia, confronts Wickham, pays his debts, arranges the marriage and protects the Bennet family from complete social ruin. The man everyone initially judged as proud becomes the one willing to bear the responsibility, while the father who always seemed wiser discovers he has very little power.

Perhaps the most painful moment comes afterwards, when Mr. Bennet finally admits to Elizabeth:

“Let me once in my life feel how much I have been to blame.”

It is one of the few moments in the novel when he sees himself without the protection of irony. By then, however, the damage has already been done.

For generations, we’ve laughed at the wrong Bennet parent. Mrs. Bennet distracts us because her failures are loud. Mr. Bennet escapes our judgment because his are quiet. In the end, Austen leaves us with a profound, uncomfortable truth about love and responsibility: one parent failed through panic, the other failed through permission.

Mrs. Bennet embarrassed her daughters. Mr. Bennet abandoned them to consequences he had the power to prevent. Austen asks us to quietly shift our attention away from the loudest parent, to reconsider the quieter failures in our own lives. The people who let us down most are not always the ones making the biggest mistakes. Sometimes they’re the ones who saw the danger clearly, knew exactly what might happen, and chose not to act.

When we’re young, we envy the man who sits safely in the library, laughing at the world. As we grow older, we begin to admire the people who quietly leave the library, step into the noise, and do the difficult work that love asks of them.

You know that feeling when you pick up your phone for “just a second” and forty-five minutes completely vanish? Or when you reach the end of a long day and can’t name a single thing you accomplished, only that you spent the entire time rushing from one thing to the next?

That’s usually when a particular image comes to mind. A quiet cottage looking out over the hills. A garden that demands patience. An entire afternoon with nowhere to be, no one expecting anything from you and rain tapping against the window. A half-finished cup of coffee sitting forgotten on the table because whatever page you’re reading matters more than finishing the drink.

I’ve never lived that life and realistically, I don’t know anyone who has. We don’t get many days without screens anymore but that image doesn’t feel like a fantasy we invented. It feels like a quiet reminder of what life feels like when we aren’t constantly being pulled in a hundred directions.

The Life We Keep Imagining

Ask anyone what slowing down looks like and you will probably hear the same images repeated: steam rising from a morning drink, rain against old windows, a stack of books waiting to be read, a walk taken with nowhere particular to go. Austen didn’t just write a great book, she accidentally built the definitive, unbeaten blueprint for this entire trope over two centuries ago and modern writers keep completely missing the point of why it actually worked.

The problem with modern “enemies”
