Yes, it’s true. Today marks the 1 year anniversary of having completed Son of the Stars and thus ending the Mothmar trilogy. With this achievement I’m releasing the short story collection called: Tales of Mothmar as an ebook. You can find that here. And also the audiobook of Son of the Stars. However, I forgot about amazons revision process so it’s not quite out yet. I think it’s on Spotify though!

If you haven’t started the trilogy yet on audio I encourage you to get it from your favorite audiobook seller OR listen to it for free here.

That’s about all I had for you today folks. I thought maybe I’d make today some big hoorah but to be honest I’ve been so busy between my family and my new job that I haven’t had time for anything author related. I was also really hoping to have t-shirts ready for purchase but unfortunately I just haven’t had the time. I’d like to delve in a bit deeper about what has been going on behind the scenes a bit more but alas. I’m glad I was able to squeak out this update, however.

My friend and I used to talk about the end of the world, about the grid failing, money becoming nothing but paper, and people grouping up into tribes. But that wasn’t what happened at all. Sure, the first year was a bit wobbly. A few wars broke out, a few countries razed to the ground where they couldn’t contain the infection—I shudder thinking of Iceland—but now two years in, it’s become so abnormally normal.

The Morphs aren’t quite what most were expecting either. Phylum Nematomorpha evolved from invertebrates to vertebrates and just like that, mankind was screwed. And it all started on a beach…much like this one. I laugh to myself and shake my head as the thick wheels of my cart turn over soft sand.

June 2026 Update

Events

I like naming these substacks by the date because it’s easier for me to keep track of. But did you know what I found? People are way less likely to open and read them if they have a boring title. So I have to grab you all with something witty and usually about money.

Speaking of, let’s talk about how May went down.

May had some of my lowest online sales in history. I’m talking like less than ten books across all the platforms. It was wild. I mean, I haven’t really been on social media much, I haven’t published a book in a while, and I’m not running ads. So who is to blame here?

However, I did do two different events that went really well.

The first was something like a makers market/craft fair situation. It’s the second time I’ve done one of these events but I was so nervous as we opened this time around. Why? There were so few people. The weather had been weird that day and threatening to rain. We were told to expect over 1,000 patrons and I’d say it was a stretch to call it 200. Every artist I talked to complained about zero sales and a frustrating day.

I had…my most successful event. Not gonna lie. I sold 25 books. 25! I think I’ve only sold that much in person one other time. I was blown away. I will be back at this event come December and I cannot wait. I hope I do just as well.

My second event was my first ever Barnes & Noble event!

This is where things got dicey. You see, getting into B&N, though a dream come true, is quite expensive for me. Not only do I have to provide my own books & materials…but then B&N takes 40% of my book sales. Hence why I sold 32 books but only made $33. Now, you might ask, Amanda if you were going to make so little, why did you do it? Two reasons…

1. I’ve never done a B&N event and it was on my bucketlist. So. Check.

2. I was interested to see if they would ask to keep my books stocked on their shelves. Also, check.

Actually, I only had three Daughter of the Sun paperbacks left over after the event and while she was writing up my invoice two of them sold. So, the support at that bookstore? Astounding. A great experience. Would I do it again? I think yes…but only with paperbacks. I could raise my price online, and that would help things…*sigh* I just hate doing it. It makes things so inaccessible. But maybe we’re headed in that direction.

Oh, and best part of the whole event was a family approaching me to tell me they read my first book 2 years ago and had no idea I’d be there that day. I was like, “how did you find out about my books?” And we discovered they used to be neighbors of my best friend who lives halfway around the world! What a small world. God is good.

I don’t actually have any upcoming events right now until December. I was accepted into Fantasy Forge in Pigeon Forge TN in October but turned it down. I just can’t justify the cost! Maybe one day.

Bookish News

• I have something going on behind the scenes that involves my zombie book. I’m hopeful I can share about it soon. But I’m really liking where the story is going! (It is a YA rom-com.)

• Daughter of the Sun Audiobook is now FREE on Youtube! Thank you to a follower on Instagram who messaged me about it thinking someone stole it—it reminded me I hadn’t quite made the announcement here yet! (And thanks for looking out!) I’m contracted with Golden Griffin Press and am pleased to offer it to you all free of charge.

• Kickstarter backers who added “Tales of Mothmar” ebook onto their pledges—I’ll be sending those out so soon! And I’ll be getting the hardcovers printed soon.

• Audiobooks: Dungeon Crawler Carl Books 1-4. Yup. I’m obsessed. Highly recommend if you like that kind of thing. (Warning heavy gore/language/grossness) DONUT HOLE REPORTING FOR DUTY

• eBook: The Martian by Andy Weir - enjoying it a lot! I loved Project Hail Mary so I was excited to jump into this one.

• Hardcopy: Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion - I’m just starting this as “research” for my zombie book. I’m enjoying it so far!

• Watching: The X-Files! AND LOVING IT!!

Personal Life

I got a part time job! Honestly this is perfect timing for our family. With three of my four starting school soon and my youngest going to a morning program twice a week, I’ll get some uninterrupted time to help support my family financially.

If I could ask for prayer from you all—my husband has been physically unwell since the beginning of March and we aren’t sure where to go from here. (Hence why the job is really helpful!) Please pray we figure out what’s going on and find a solution.

Okay now onto story time…

Soon after Daughter of the Sun released back in 2022, I decided to do a “Bookstore Tour”. I ran around to all the local places and ask for them to stock my book. I thought I’d get at least half of the stores interested in stocking my first book. Instead, I got a bored look from whomever was behind the front desk, and a note with an email handed to me. (For their book acquisitioner). Or, even worse, they said, “we don’t stock self published books.”

This was so disheartening to me. I had done self-publishing the hard way. Meaning, I had gone through Ingramspark, set a higher wholesale discount, and turned on the ability to Return books. Now, don’t get me wrong, I understand local bookstores are businesses first and I didn’t have a history to prove my books would sell.

Now, 3 books in, my books are in a few bookstores and here are the things I think that helped make that happen:

1. Newer bookstores seem to be more open to stocking me than more established ones. I also am willing to do signings at their shops and bring extra free goodies for readers.

2. I shop there. I like to support my local bookstores as much as I can! So I try to gift shop there whenever I can.

3. Barnes & Noble recently changed their way of acquiring books and now they’re far more author forward instead of publisher forward. This has led to a huge influx in indie authors being shelved! Which is so exciting.

Now, since the release of my second book, I have actually turned off “Returns” as this put me in the red at COTE’s release. But guess what? I’m still getting sales at bookstores.

Other lies I’ve heard (and tell myself) as an indie author…

• You won’t make any money - I actually have been self-sustaining for two years now! (Meaning I can pay for all my book expenses.) This does require coming out with a book a year though and unforunately I’m not doing that.

• You need a ton of social media followers - while that does help, I’ve found that a few hard-core fans are worth their weight in gold. I would take them over 50k followers any day.

• You have to use AI to generate content quickly enough - you really don’t. There’s nothing wrong with moving slower. And I also know plenty of authors who put multiple books out a year and don’t use it.

• You need a lot of free time - Most of my books are written in the evening, nap times, or early mornings. I do get about 3 days per month where I get a some uninterrupted hours but it’s not a guarantee!

• Writing fiction is a waste of time - I’m a Christian and my beliefs play a heavy role in how/why I write. If I truly believe what I say I do, then my entire life is an act of worship. All to the glory of God. Jesus taught in parables (fictional stories with eternal meaning). I find myself doing much the same whether I try to or not. I write to see my faith through a new lens, just like I hope my readers will be able to do.

Quick Personal Update

I have been busy finalizing everything for the Son of the Stars Audiobook. I even recorded the Letter to the Reader & Acknowledgments for the end of the book, which I’m super stoked about. I’m hoping it will be live in June.

I’m done with my book of short stories: Tales of Mothmar. If you’re interested in giving it an early read to give me formatting/proofreading feedback I’d love that! I’m taking 2 more people. Just respond to this email or leave a comment. (You have to have finished the trilogy, as there are spoilers).

I have two different job opportunities that have popped up recently that I have been praying heavily about. Will you pray with me? Our home life has been going through a really hard season with my husband’s health, and I would love to be able to help out to give him a bit of a break. I can’t wait to tell you more about both of these. One is book related, the other is a more consistent part time gig.

I get so many author newsletters that if there’s no photo? I’m not going to read it. I don’t like reading newsletters from people when I don’t remember their face. :P Okay so here’s mine.

Moving on…

I have some important things that have happened recently and want to make you aware.

1. The Honor Anthology came out back in March and (more honesty time) I haven’t read a single story but my own. I am so excited to dig into it. You can get the paperback, audiobook, or ebook copy HERE but if you want the pretty special editions you’ll have to order from my shop HERE! There’s only 3 left.

2. Speaking of my shop, I’m going to have to close it down. Unfortunately, the fees have gone up too high to keep it in business. To send it off with a bang I will be selling all my books for 20% off. But come mid-September, it will all be gone and I’ll likely only be selling directly through Instagram or possible Etsy whenever I have another book release.

3. (This is still a bit of a secret but I’m working on making Daughter of the Sun FREE on youtube for all you avid audiobook listeners!! Keep checking these emails and my instagram. It’ll happen soon! Check out the youtube now and start listening to some other great books.)

4. Remember that book of short stories I told y’all I was making? Well, it’s still in the works. I’m going through the edits and my artist is figuring out the chapter headers. However, the first story that I had published…two years ago now? I think? Of Prophecies and Pools, is now on audio! Between prooflistening to Son of the Stars audio and editing my short stories, I’ve been brainstorming a few new books. Dystopia seems to be on my mind and I’m excited to dig in and actually outline a few things.

Are you all on Fable? I’ve started using that a lot more than Goodreads. I’ve recently read and enjoyed The Hobbit and Katabasis. Both very different books but also quite similar in terms of a journey to the heart of a beast to discover more about themselves…hmm I’m making connections. I’m currently reading The Blood Stones by Tori Tecken and it’s 100000% so good.

I’ve also read (and not enjoyed) The Strength of the Few. Idk guys. All signs point to me loving that book but I just couldn’t do it. Vis is the worst.

Oh also the kids and I are listening to The Wild Robot Protects in the car and it’s so good! Although his use of alliteration is all I can hear now.

I feel like I have so much more to catch up on with you all but I’ll have to save it for another letter.

Pre-Order the Honor Anthology

Now, I’ve since come to the understanding that self-publishing often gets you a higher return than its trad-published counterpart. However, all the work rests on one person’s shoulders. While getting a trad-pub deal is still a bucket list goal for me, I am content, for now, to stick with publishing on my own dime.

The biggest hurdle in this?

I’m a wee minnow in a vast ocean of books.

Getting my name out there has been the. hardest. thing. (And all the authors say, amen!) So, in the past few weeks I have tried a few different tactics in hopes of cracking some kind of code, and failing that, at least find something that sticks. Let’s begin with the first…

Meta Ads

Dipping my toes into the ad world was, at an understatement, overwhelming. But between an author friend and another who used to work with Meta Ads as her means of income, we figured out how to get a few running. I ran a few different ads the week before and after Christmas.

My husband had offered up $250 for experimentation and to be honest? It’s hard not seeing that money as wasted. From December 16-January 31 I made $76.65 on amazon from all three books. I spent $149 of that money. While I didn’t expect to make any money my first time through, I was hoping to get a bit closer to breaking even.

Then I secured one of these deals. Any indie author knows, these deals can be highly lucrative. So I spent $256 to go through with the deal. All I had to do was make my book .99 for the 4-5 days I had it going. But through a series of unfortunate events not only did I miss my day, but then when I rescheduled I did it incorrectly and only discounted USA so I missed out on a bunch of international sales. (The imposter syndrome was knocking down my door here lol)

Bookbub, which seems to be notoriously known for not being gracious, was gracious! And not only did they reschedule me when I missed my day but they also offered me a second deal for the international readers that I missed. This was not free, however, and cost me an extra $54.

For the USA deal I was about to sell 122 books over the course of the sale, bringing in $69 and the international deal sold 32 books and brought in $17.

At this point I was rethinking all of my life choices. But then…

Book Event

The last Saturday in February I was able to attend my first Front Paige Media event. I had heard about these events bringing in a ton of readers and was excited to get on the docket. But would I actually make any money? Between my time, the cost of inventory, and the cost to reserve a spot, I was a little nervous.

Here’s my breakdown: (Notice I did not include travel/gas, food (because I literally could not leave my table to eat), or taxes. I also already owned my table, banner, and swag.)

Overall, this event just proved to me, yet again, that in person events are truly the way to go when it comes to actually making money off of my books. Also, they’re way more fun than the other two options. I got to meet a ton of new readers, I got to network with other authors, and I got to talk about my books for 5 hours. (Also got to almost lose my voice lol).

It was so busy that I literally could not leave my table. I went one time to use the bathroom but the lines for food were so long I couldn’t risk it. Usually I would bring my husband along for big events but I honestly had no idea it was be so well attended!

Takeaways

• Although in person events are a bit difficult for me to get to as a mom to four kids, I am determined to make this happen more often. This requires actually booking out my calendar and planning ahead. And, booking events that are close to home. Paying for a hotel and food would eat my profits up and I would prefer to actually make something at the end of the day. (As an example, my local library is doing an indie author day where authors can sell books, I can’t believe I didn’t know about it until yesterday and they have a waitlist. Hopefully I can go next year!)

• If I ever get to a point where I can hire someone to run ads for me, I’m going to do it. I do see positives from doing things this way, but also think I need to write books for an audience of adults for this to be more lucrative for me.

• I don’t see myself doing a bookbub ad again.

Notice, social media wasn’t listed as one of the methods in this article. This is because you literally cannot prove where your sales are coming from. Sure, I can see how many likes or saves something has…but sales? It doesn’t exist. I have enjoyed SM in the past and really do like connecting with people on there. But at the end of the day the internet is sucking the life out of me and it just isn’t sustainable anymore. I’m on there when I’m able, but I hate feeling like a monkey doing tricks for peanuts.

I’m reminded that the best way to sell books is to write the next one. Oh, and word of mouth is king. Truly.

I hope to be slinging books all afternoon at Ironworks. My goal is to sell out of my stock! Please come out there will be tons of book vendors! There should be food and other spots to shop there as well. I’m excited!

December and all of 2025 Sales

I know you nosy Nancys want to know all about the financial part of it. (Tbh that’s me too.) So, here’s a rundown of how things went:

I sold 65 books in December spread across all platforms with over 8,000 page reads on KU. This was a really great month for me! I was expecting it to be pretty poor with Christmas coming but I was pleasantly surprised.

Total Sales of all 3 books spread over ebooks, hardcovers, paperbacks, and audio = 1306 for 2025. This was my second-best year since 2022 but better than last year, so I’ll take it! I had a total of 36,185 page reads in 2025. I didn’t get my books into KU until August so that’s spread over 5 months, which I feel is pretty good.

Current WIP

I know you don’t want to hear it but YES my short stories LOL I’M SORRY SUE ME

It’s been a long hard road and while I’m DONE writing them…I am revising. I’m always scared to jump back in after I’ve been away from a manuscript for a while because I’m afraid I’ll hate it.

But honestly I’m reading Phineas’s story right now and I’m LOVING it. It’s so fun. I love baby Phineas. (By baby, I mean he’s 18). Also, I’ve been drawing a lot, which has been super fun. I’m working on a comic strip for one of my short stories. It’s hilarious and terrible. And maybe I’ll show it here when I’m done.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - Steig Larsson (audiobook)

The Girl Who Played with Fire - Steig Larsson (audiobook)

I thoroughly enjoyed both of these. My favorite books of all time are the C.B. Strike mysteries by Robert Galbraith (aka J.K. Rowling) and I was dying for similar realistic intrigue. I found it in these books! I’m going to start including what kind of rating these books might be because I know many people may take my recommendations as “safe” but that’s a pretty relative label. Rated R

Kiss of Deception - Mary E. Pearson (paperback)

Heart of Betrayal - Mary E. Pearson (paperback)

The Beauty of Darkness - Mary E. Pearson (paperback)

The Remnant Chronicles were great YA fantasy reads. I highly recommend for any teens or adults who love a good angsty high-stakes “princess wants to be a regular shmegular person but realizes she is gonna destroy the world if she is” type of books. I’m a sucker for a good love triangle so the first book was my favorite in that regard but book two had AMAZING politics. Book three was a WILD ride and I didn’t love it as much only because there was STRESS. But overall, I loved it! Rated PG-13

I Who Have Never Known Men - Jacqueline Harpman (hardcover)

10/10. Such a good book. I was struck by the line:

“I was forced to acknowledge too late, much too late, that I too had loved, that I was capable of suffering, and that I was human after all.”

Goosebumps. Every time.

Go read it.

Rated PG-16? Maybe just R. I would probably let my kids read it at 16.

Currently reading the third in the Dragon Tattoo trilogy on audio and V.K. Dixon’s Veil of Mist which is the 4th in her Warden Series on my kindle. I’m also going through Drawing with the Right Side of Your Brain by Betty Edwards which I’m thoroughly enjoying but will take me a while to get through since it’s also a workbook style and I have to draw throughout.

Audiobook for Son of the Stars

Yup! You heard me right. I’ve had several people asking when this audiobook will finally be in production and I can say we are moving forward with beginning at the end of February!! I am thrilled to have added two more narrators to the team (so four total) to bring this book to life. I will hope to have this ready to go for sale by the mid to late spring!

Goals for 2026

Read. Read a lot. Watching movies and TV that inspire me. Draw a lot. Work out a lot. Eat more protein and fiber (hello chickpeas). I would love to do more in person events as well and actively working on applying for spaces. However, this is a refill-my-cup kind of year, so if it doesn’t happen…that’s okay! My husband and I are getting to go away in March and that’s all that is priority for me right now in this season.

November showed a big uptick in sales. (October I sold 26 books, November I sold 177) I think this is due to two things:

1. I had a failed bookbub deal. - I misunderstood my dates and set my sale for the wrong ones, so bookbub didn’t advertise for me. (It had cost me $256). I was really sad about this and posted asking for people to spread the word that my first ebook was only .99 and man…did people deliver! I was amazed at how everyone shared my post and I ended up with 114 ebook sales that month and over 12,000 page reads on KU. I am so thankful! (And bookbub agreed to reschedule my deal to later in December or January so I’ll be back!)

2. I started marketing more. The Honor Anthology was running on Kickstarter so I was on there anyway and just started being more consistent. And surprise surprise, my sales increased. Thankful though I am, it is annoying knowing this is the cause. :P

I have had two friends who have graciously agreed to help teach me Meta Ads. So between the two of them I think I’m grasping it a bit better. I’ll be trying to launch some in the near future and keep you all updated on its happenings.

Events

I was able to set up a table at a local Craft Fair last week which ended up going swimmingly! Craft fairs can really be hit or miss as they aren’t book centered. But I sold two sets and 10 singles so I felt really good about that. Thanks to everyone who stopped by!

I have a tentative plan to attend an event at Iron Works in Raleigh on February 28th. Stay tuned!

Writing/Reading Updates

Still working away on short stories and pondering ideas for a future novel. I want to be reading more though as its the fodder for all good creative ideas when it comes to writing.

I just finished reading D.L. Jennings not yet published book, Dreams of Blood and Shadow. It was fantastic! He just got a trad pub deal with it so I can’t wait to see it on the shelves.

I’m listening to The Shadow of What was Lost by James Islington. I still have 8 hours left and honestly I’m struggling. I listened to his other book, The Will of the Many, and enjoyed it (though it took me a long time to get into it.) For some reason these two books feel so similar to me that it feels like I’m reading the older brother of TWOTM. Idk how I feel about it yet. I feel like I should just listen to the Strength of the Few!

I’m about to start The Heart of Betrayal by Mary E. Pearson, I read the first book: Kiss of Deception, last month and enjoyed it! I haven’t read a good fantasy YA romance in a while and it’s a cutie patootie with a bit of war sprinkled in. (And a great plot twist!)

Of course I said yes.

Of course I was immediately filled with imposter syndrome and was paralyzed with fear.

But we pressed on.

You see, everything I’ve ever published has been meticulously combed through by my editor. However, with her stepping out of the editing sphere I knew I had to do this on my own.

And I can proudly say this is my first publication that I did without an editor (before it was edited by GGP of course). It felt like taking my first confident step as an adolescent deer lol.

I use a physical calendar.

It’s a dry erase board tacked to my wall and it is fantastic for my marriage. However, it’s not fantastic when someone asks me about plans and I’m not home. My response? I’ll check my calendar! And people think I’m strange. But it works for us.

You didn’t know October is the best month? Well. Now you know. My birthday month, the month Daughter of the Sun first released, and the weather is the best. (I live in NC, we don’t get a lot of mild weather okay?!)

Last Month’s Sales

I had 42 sales total (woohoo!) which is better than the months leading up to Son of the Star’s release. But I’m still trying to figure out a marketing plan that is sustainable for me. Currently, the only “free” option seems to be social media (not my fav) but I think it’s what we have to do to continue.

It was also my first full month with my books being in Kindle Unlimited. I got to 9,008 page reads in September! My goal was 10k but I’d say that’s pretty darn close. I don’t see this as a good standard however, as it does require a lot of Tiktok marketing to see it go anywhere.

Things I’m Excited About

1. My special edition foiled paperbacks should be arriving next week. I am so excited to see how they turn out! Then I’ll be delivering a lot of hardcover and paperback special editions to my edge printer to finalize the rest of the Kickstarter fulfillment (aside from the short story book of course).

2. I’ve been getting the itch to start writing again (FINALLY) so I’m back to the grind with short stories.

3. I was asked to swing by my local bookstore — Monkey Kat Books — to sign some readers’ copies…which was a bit surreal. I think doing local events and being in bookstores may be my favorite part of being an author.

4. I have some really cool Kickstarters and new releases to share with you! And yes these are for authors that I have read myself and enjoyed immensely.

Son of the Stars Book Launch

Looking back at my previous book launches, I’m struck by how different they all were. DOTS was at a coffee shop, attended mostly by old family friends and some newer ones as well. I had so many books left over but it was a good time. I had a lot of preorders though (100+)

COTE was at a brewery. I had a lot of sales from a lot of newer readers and friends. My friend Angela came all the way from Alabama to visit for this one which made it extra special. Lots of pre-orders here too! (250+ HOWEVER…this backfired and about half of them were returned and it hurt me financially)

And then there was SOTS. This was by far my least amount of pre-orders and hype. However, I was spoiled rotten by a local bookstore who had me in for a special event to celebrate. New and old friends alike came and overall it was my favorite.

Kindle Unlimited

Ah did you notice what’s on that little graphic above? Now on KU! For those of you reading this who are fellow authors you may be wondering why I switched. (For some years now I’ve been WIDE which just means my ebooks have been available on every platform.) But since switching to KU my books can only be sold on Amazon. This gives me access to a subscription service called Kindle Unlimited.

Thoughts on this?

Worth it.

In July I made around $30 on Amazon for the entire month. I made zero ebook sales elsewhere. In September on the other hand, I had made $30 by day 8. And I think more readers are finding and trying my trilogy. Now, this may be partially to do with the fact that it’s a completed trilogy (or a big part of it) and because it was just release month, so I have sales trickling in from that. But, overall, I’m happy with KU so far. We’ll see how it goes in the coming months.

Kickstarter Update

All hardcovers and plain paperbacks have been ordered, foiled paperbacks were approved just this morning, and now I just have to acquire my packing materials and we are set to go! It’s quite nerve wracking to see your bank account drop by half when you’re ordering thousands of dollars worth of books! I’m praying everything comes looking fantastic!

Life & Books Update

I have quite a few books left over from my launch that I plan on adding to my web store. However, I also hope to have some surplus of the limited edition books as well (with the colored interior and foiled things etc). Kickstarter books should be going out end of October and I’ll figure out pricing of surplus items and hope to have all those ready by November so that I can send things out in time for Christmas.

Life is busy as always. My kiddos are getting a 3 week break from school September 20-October 12th so I’ll have a bit less time again to get any writing done. That being said, I am still slowly working on those short stories. I’m enjoying them, even if they’re taking a while.

Thank you to everyone who came to my launch party! I had such a wonderful time and appreciated everyone there. And to those of you who made it to the end of this update—you’re the best. Thanks for keeping up with me.

Writing/Bookish Update

Remember 5 seconds ago when you read about my older two kids starting back to school? Well, yeah. Before that happened I really wasn’t getting anything done. (Not sure how you homeschool moms and dads do it!) I have a hard time compartmentalizing my life when I have so much going on so to keep all the plates spinning a few things had to go. Those were: social media and writing.

I’ve steadily been working on formatting, ordering proofs, stickers, bookmarks, and prints. Formatting really does take so much time. But although it is intensive it is also easy to turn on an audiobook and work so that has been nice.

I really don’t know if I’ll return to Instagram. I’ve tried being on TT for a bit. I created a ghost account and have been trying some alternative methods of advertising (more photos and descriptions of the trilogy, none of my face). And honestly I do see an uptick in sales when I do so.

But is it worth the mental space? That’s the question I’ve been asking recently. I’ll address this more in the life section of this Substack.

I’m scared to admit that I haven’t touched my short stories for my Tales of Mothmar book I sold during Kickstarter. Can I be transparent? I have seriously considered refunding everyone for that book simply because I’ve had zero wherewithal or time. But, I’ve ultimately decided to keep trucking on. Those books will just have to be sent separately and I’ll eat whatever cost that accrues.

Sales, Shifts, & Distribution

I have been “wide” for the last few years. This means you could purchase my ebooks & audiobooks from retailers other than Amazon (including borrowing from the library). However, this method requires a lot more advertising/marketing on my part so I have shifted all exclusivity to Amazon and Audible. There hasn’t been a huge uptick in sales or anything but my hope is that I can be less hands on and still get sales/reads.

However, hardcovers and paperbacks are still available at all other retailers. You can now pre-order Son of the Stars in ebook, paperback, and hardcover (the physical books should populate by the next few days). But currently you can pre-order the ebook HERE. I’ll send a fresh email when it is all available.

An audiobook is not currently in the works and I don’t expect it will be anytime soon. I plan to reevaluate when my Kickstarter is fulfilled and all costs have been paid to see if I can afford it.

Life Musings w/ Photos

• I’m starting to get messages from readers about Son of the Stars! I sent the Kickstarter ebook out to my backers a few weeks ago and it has been so good for my heart to see people’s words. It’s a hard thing, finishing a trilogy. The act of it—yes, but more so the labor of love and mental weaving I’ve endured. So, if you’ve read Son of the Sars, currently reading, or plan to; please feel free to leave a review on Goodreads and then Amazon when it publishes. And/Or you can email me: amanda@authoramandaauler.com to tell me all your thoughts on the trilogy! I love a good encouragement email.

• Also did you see that fan art up there? I couldn’t remember if I had shared it or not. But a reader named Nessa sent that to me and my jaw hit the floor! I love some good fan art.

• The book you see in the photo is Children of the Earth being held by an employee at MonkeyKat books! One page was folded over and glued into the binding of the book. So if you want that very special edition, check out MonkeyKat in Sanford NC!

• My brother and his family came to visit for 2 weeks and we got to play lots of rounds of Above and Below (the Haunted version is my fav). If you like resource gathering games with a dash of DND I highly recommend! It was so fun.

I’ve been thinking a lot about my time spent on the internet and what that looks like for my four boys as they grow. How can I teach them to master themselves if I myself don’t exhibit self control? How can I spout the dangers of social media if I treat it so flippantly and obsessively?

It’s a difficult thing, raising children in the age of the internet. Especially when it feels like your business relies on marketing there. I’ve spent a lot of time prayerfully considering how to move forward without the need for it. I’m not doing away with the internet completely. Instead, I’d like to be very intentional with it. Which means establishing hours, running from apps that draw me in too tightly, and stopping the mindless scroll. So, for now? I will stick to Substack, emails, updating my website, and doing in person events. Maybe one day I can shift toward marketing again—but that day is not today.

There has been a lot of change and growth happening lately in my heart and mind: spiritually, emotionally, and physically (without social media I actually make time to work out!) So, if I take a bit longer to do the things I’ve promised: please extend me grace.

I don’t have anything super detailed yet but the evening of the 5th there will be a full on bookstore launch party for Son of the Stars complete with a reading, signing, and a giveaway! Son of the Stars/Kickstarter Updates

My proofreader finished up a few weeks ago so I’ve been hard at work formatting, getting page counts down, and fixing my cover. There wasn’t anything wrong with it, perse…however, there were two things I knew needed to change.

The first, the Son of the Stars cover is the darkest of the three. On my ipad, it looks fantastic. Colors are popping, things are great. However, when it actually comes to print it is faded and hard to see. My cover designer offered to help with colors but 1. I really wanted to learn Procreate more and finalize my own covers and 2. Though I love the work my cover designer has done the amount of time it takes to email back and forth is just not something I’m willing to endure.

The second, is the title. I didn’t have an issue with it until my husband saw it and said: isn’t it kind of big compared to your other ones? BLAH. Last thing I wanted to hear. So, I bought the font and have been fiddling with making it match while still filling empty space since “Son” is a much smaller word than “Daughter” or “Children”. Just goes to show how many tiny shifts and changes go into producing a book. It can feel endless!

Also, have you seen the final illustration for Son of the Stars? Thanks to Kickstarter I was able to get three illustrations for each book and I am IN LOVE. I was struggling figuring out which third illustration to do for Son of the Stars and my friend Kayla asked if I ever considered doing a romantic scene.

I had literally never thought about it LOL. (I am not a romantic if you couldn’t tell) I’m so glad she suggested it though because LOOOOOK. I love it so much.

I got two proofs done to check covers, here’s a side by side with the older cover on the left and the updated (brighter and smaller title) cover on the right. AND it’s the first time I’m seeing my illustrations in my books! That was such a cool moment. (This is B&W here but will be colored in the Kickstarter books)

I also just sent out Kickstarter surveys finally so if you did pledge, please fill those out so I can get the digital rewards out quickly (:

I haven’t been working steadily on the short stories, if I’m being honest. They will get done. I promise you. But, I really did overestimate the amount of free time I would have while my older two have been out of school for summer break! But this leads me into my next point…

What I’m Working On

Currently I’m doing a final proofread of Son of the Stars. I had a wonderful friend go through it just before me and find some good errors (because let me tell you, NOTHING IN THIS WORLD IS MORE RESILIENT THAN A MISPLACED COMMA) So this is me shouting out Emma Hill who is amazing. She has been such a wonderful encouragement to me and actually recently sent me a tiny Curry. (Peep Erval staring her down. Go away Erval!) Go here to buy her book!

I’ve also just been working hard on formatting. I weirdly enjoy formatting? But it is a lot of waiting around since Atticus takes forever to buffer. So, I’ve been enjoying my favorite book series of all time on audio for like the sixth time (don’t judge me). But also, it’s the Cormoran Strike Series by Robert Galbraith. Thank me later.

Social Media, Book Sales, and Plans for the Future

As most of you know, I’ve been taking an extended break from the interwebs. Instagram has always been my go to in terms of connection to the author/reader community, collabs with any brands, and marketing. But ever since becoming pregnant with my fourth child, having him, and going through his first year, I am OVER it.

Now, part of me is really thankful for Instagram in particular. I believe it to be the superior social media platform for any kind of community. I have met some of my closest friends through there that I still talk with daily via texting/marco polo and even in person. (This is foreshadowing, keep reading to see what happens) But, when it comes to actual book sales, it really was bringing in nothing.

I have a group of friends currently trying some new strategies on Tik Tok. Do I want to be over there? Heck no. However, the strategy is pretty simple. I don’t have to show my face. And I’m literally just posting pictures/slides. It’s had varying success so far. And although I’ve been doing it less than a month, I have seen an improvement in the occasional sale. I’m going to stick to it, and see what happens.

Speaking of book sales. June has actually been a decent month. (Not zero! Yay!) And again, I attribute this to two things. The TT experiment, and the few in person events I’ve done.

I’m not sure when/if I will return to IG. I would prefer to do all sales direct through this substack if I’m being honest…but I’m a bit too long winded to do that effectively I think hehe.

My Recent Events

I’ve had two events, both with my local indie bookstore, MonkeyKat Books. The first was a writers’ night panel! It was actually really fun. We had four authors from various publishing backgrounds (me included) and we chatted about all things publishing. It was really fun and I enjoyed getting to know everyone.

The second was a Grown Up Book Fair at a local brewery. I was able to attend with 3 other authors. Moriah Chavis (YA Fantasy), Lukas Ryan (Dark Fantasy), and Katherine Bitner (Romance). I’ve linked all their books, feel free to check them out! Katherine left before our picture, but here we are!

Also, this made me realize how much I need a large poster like Lukas has here. I was super jealous lol.

Things I’m Excited About

My friend Moriah (the girl on the right in the last photo) has a detective mystery coming out in September! It’s such a fun book. Pre-order your copy here!

My Personal Life + An Author Visit!

If you’ve made it this far, you’re either emotionally invested or just procrastinating something in your life—either way, I approve :P

“Birthday Season” in my house ranges from the end of April, into the beginning of May, and then two birthdays a week apart in June and finally my husband’s birthday in July. Why I decided to run a Kickstarter amidst it all is beyond me. But here I am, crawling out of the mire of balloons, cakes, and wrapping paper. My kids (8, 6, 4, and 1) are all growing like weeds and life is just chaotic. I’m in the good old days, I know this. But I have to take photos to remind myself that they are indeed more good than not. (Because it can be quite overwhelming.)

Did you spot the photo above? My friend Ellen Mcginty traveled all the way from Japan to visit me and my family! Okay, maybe I wasn’t the true reason they came to visit, but she did drive to come see me and Moriah, and I was overjoyed. We hosted their family and my kids had a great time playing SuperSmash with theirs. We ate good food, spoke of publishing, shared with the Lord was doing in our lives, and because it simply wasn’t long enough, met up for coffee the following day.
