That’s why finishing matters so much.

A completed manuscript can be edited.

It can be shared with trusted beta readers.

It can find an agent, a publisher, or readers who fall in love with it.

An unfinished manuscript can’t do any of those things.

So the next time doubt whispers that you should quit, answer it with action.

Write one more page.

Then another.

Keep moving forward until you type those two incredible words:

The End.

They’re not the finish line.

They’re the beginning of turning your draft into the best version of your story.

Your future readers won’t remember how long it took you to finish.

It’s judging an unfinished story.

We reread the same chapter until every sentence feels wrong.

We compare our first draft to someone else’s published novel.

We convince ourselves the story isn’t working when, in reality, it just isn’t finished yet.

Here’s something worth remembering:

A first draft is supposed to answer one question:

What is the story?

The second draft asks:

How can I make it better?

Those are two completely different jobs.

When you try to do both at once, writing becomes exhausting. Every new sentence is interrupted by an editor who wasn’t invited into the room.

Give yourself permission to write badly.

Write the awkward dialogue.

Write the scene that feels incomplete.

Write the ending even if you’re not sure it’s the right one.

Because once the story exists, you have something real to improve.

No author publishes their first draft.

Every great book has gone through revisions, feedback, edits, and moments of doubt.

Yours will too.

So today, stop asking, “Is this good enough?”

Instead, ask, “Did I move my story forward?”

If the answer is yes, you’ve already succeeded.

Reading reminds me why stories matter.

It teaches rhythm, character, pacing, and emotion in ways no writing guide ever could.

Every great author was once a reader who fell in love with stories.

Others end with deleting pages that simply weren’t working.

I start with people.

How do they live? What do they fear? What stories do they tell their children? What traditions have survived for centuries?

Only after answering those questions do I begin thinking about kingdoms, dragons, and ancient gods.

A believable world isn’t built from maps alone.

It’s built from lives.

It’s about showing up.

Some days the words come easily. Other days, every sentence feels like it’s being pulled from stone. I’ve learned that both kinds of days matter.

The pages written on difficult days often teach me more than the easy ones.

As I work on The Drowned Gods, I’m reminding myself that books aren’t written in a single burst of brilliance. They’re built through hundreds of ordinary writing sessions, one page at a time.
