Find the combo. Turn the little dial. Click. Finally, they’d see.

Except people aren’t safes.

Sometimes the explanation is perfectly fine.

There wasn’t a better sentence hiding somewhere.

And still, no click.

Walking away from that used to feel unfinished, almost physically incorrect. would like to know who started telling us to “listen to your body” because mine isn’t especially forthcoming with information.

If I’m overwhelmed, I don’t necessarily get a useful warning that says, You’ve had enough. Go home. I might just start hating the grocery store, the lights, the cart with the bad wheel, the human standing mere inches behind me, and all songs recorded between 1983 and the present. By the time I realize I’m overloaded, I may have already been overloaded for a while.

This is what bothers me about a lot of the advice given to autistic adults. It isn’t always wrong. There’s good advice. But people have a habit of giving us the first sentence and strolling away before the complicated part.

“Listen to your body” is easy to say when you can tell what yours is saying.

“Set boundaries” is easy to say when you aren’t the one who has to deal with your mother afterward.

“Ask for help” sounds reasonable until you need help figuring out what kind of help you need.

And “advocate for yourself” leaves out the fairly important possibility that you could explain yourself just fine and those with the power to help you could still say no.

That’s what I’ll focus on here. I want to talk about what happens when decent advice meets an autistic life and discovers it has greatly overestimated its authority.

Welcome to the Autism Advice Graveyard.

We’re gonna dig up a few things.

“Listen to your body”

Let’s start with the assumption that you know what your body is telling you.

Plenty of times I’ve known that something is wrong without having the slightest idea what the problem is. Hungry could feel like anxious. Tired could feel like sad. Overstimulated could feel like every human in the immediate vicinity is now unbearable for reasons I can’t explain.

It’s normal for the info to make itself known later on. (Alexithymia, anyone?) You get home and realize how hard you were working to stay functional. You eat and discover that hunger might’ve had something to do with your conviction that civilization was collapsing. You lie down for ten minutes and wake up two hours later.

Then you’re told to listen to your body.

I WAS LISTENING! THE RECEPTION BLEW.

There’s autistics who have a good read on what’s happening inside them, and there’s autistics who don’t. Others have gotten better at it and still miss things. Then 4:30 rolls around and you realize your mysterious descent into despair may have coincided with forgetting that coffee isn’t lunch.

You don’t need to turn that into another thing you’re doing wrong.

Listening to yourself means noticing sooner than you used to. It means learning that when you start getting unusually irritated, you should check the boring possibilities before concluding that humanity is f’n awful. Or it could mean keeping food with you since hunger doesn’t reliably introduce itself.

You might not put the pieces together until you’re home and the damage has already been done.

The advice isn’t a commandment, so feel free to discard whatever part of it doesn’t help.
