In his leather column in the April 17, 1997 B.A.R., the late ‘Mister Marcus’ Hernandez explained, “In his capacity as the manager of the original Mister S Leather store and a leather tailor par excellence, Red created a big stir in leather circles when he launched his teddy bears at $125 a pop.”

Red died due to AIDS complications May 12, 1995, two days after turning 51.

Warlocks: Male Witches 🧙🏼 In Touch for Men Number 119 / October 1986

On first sight, Paul and Fred are a typical affluent gay couple. They live near San Francisco, both work, both are hunky and extremely sensual and curious. Fred is Dutch, with a marked accent. He often wears St. Laurent suits and at other times loves to display his well-sculpted chest. In his late 20s, he’s an ex-musclebuilder and once competed in Mr. Universe. His ‘personal’ measurement, he proudly notes, is 10½ inches. Paul is 30ish and was briefly (contractually) married before meeting Fred in Amsterdam.

An average gay couple? Not quite: they’re warlocks! Male witches... with a difference. They and other similarly inclined gay couples call it love craft.

“It’s part of our philosophy and isn’t really a religion,” says Paul. “It’s revolutionized our sex life, which got a little drab after the first year together.”

“Witchcraft isn’t necessarily evil,” states Fred. “There’s the black version and the white version. Most witches or warlocks are in between, like people. Some witches worship the devil; we don’t. In our coven, which has 18 members, we believe in the Force that animates all of us, the spirit that resides within each and every body.

Putting It Together: The Collage Art of John Shown ✂️ In Touch for Men Number 119 / October 1986

John Shown describes himself in his “short” resume (he says the long version takes 1½ hours to print out on his word processor and “is of no interest to anyone except an anal-compulsive archivist/masochist”!) as an artist, writer, lighting and scenic designer, photographer, filmmaker. The selection of his collages that we reproduce herewith show that he has a definite interest in the male body.. especially the well-developed male body.

John studied at Trinity U. Brigham Young U., the Lester Polokov Scenic Studio in New York City, and privately with Michael Frary and John Squire Adams. He currently lives in San Antonio and is involved in the art and theatre scenes there. His work is in the collections of such museums as the Museum of the city of New York, where “The John Shown Collection” of 2,500 items is part of the permanent collection, the San Antonio Main Library Theatre Collection, and in the homes of such private collectors as Monique van Vooren, Lady Glendolyn Perron, and Vidal Sassoon. He is currently working on a book of erotic collages, nude photos of himself, letters from lovers, and true, erotic, short stories.

From author Daniel Sanchez Torres: “When I began writing these essays, I knew I wanted the sex scenes to be incredibly explicit, so I turned to my collection of vintage gay porn magazines from the ‘80s and ‘90s—many of them found at AutoErotica in San Francisco. Stories from issues like Drummer #177 (1994) served as research, inspiration, craft lesson, and personal pleasure. When it came time to select images for the book, I returned to the same collection.

I wanted readers to be turned on by the images as much as by the essays. My collection is predominantly made up of magazines featuring Black, brown, and Asian men—men who, in the original issues, rarely made the cover, were often fetishized, and were frequently the only model of color in a magazine full of white boys. Selecting these images let me play casting director: assembling my own cast of sexy men, as aesthetic stand-ins for the men I wrote about sleeping with.

The book also features photographs I took myself, sequenced alongside the vintage scans. That interplay is meant to tell a fuller story—one that moves beyond sex, the same way the essays do. They’re sexy, smutty, and erotic, but the smut is always in service of a larger story about desire, aging, and what we carry with us.

Because the magazines are rare, I scanned my favorite spreads rather than cutting them up, keeping the collection intact. Will Mairs—publisher of Everything Matters Press, who also designed and printed the book—edited the scans to give them a fried, zine-like quality, as if the images had been scanned and shared many times over.”

‘A Very Oral History’ – filmmaking team to document queer history: Producer Ricky Vidrio and director Jeremy Von Stilb are on a mission. The filmmaking duo are now in the midst of creating “A Very Oral History,” which is what they describe as a “kaleidoscopic history of queer San Francisco in the ’70s and ’80s.” The film will be divided into six chapters, beginning with AutoErotica, the Castro store which has become a living museum of queer history. Chapter two will focus on magazines, such as the legendary Drummer. The chapter will recall how queer publications built community before the internet.

Inside the National AIDS Memorial Grove, green and quiet in the heart of Golden Gate Park, granite boulders carry names and messages that paper cannot hold and headlines never printed. One of those boulders already speaks for the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence — the irreverent, fearless order of street nuns who turned drag into direct action and grief into ministry.

It’s time to honor another community that rallied early to fundraise and caregive during the AIDS crisis – the global leather community.

Long before public health agencies found their footing, the leather community was already doing the work — helping to write and promote some of the first safer-sex guidelines, building peer-education networks bar by bar and club by club, and refusing to let fear extinguish connection.

The National AIDS Memorial first recognized the San Francisco Leather Community with its Thom Weyand Unsung Hero Award on World AIDS Day 2015, and featured this community in it inaugural Surviving Voices AIDS oral history short-documentary series.

This boulder reaches further: a permanent tribute to leather communities everywhere — honoring those who were lost to AIDS, and standing as well for the survivors, educators, and successors who carried that early work forward and carry it still.

‘Larry Townsend, the charismatic author of the classic 1972 Leatherman’s Handbook, died at 2:40 Tuesday afternoon, July 29, 2008, at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. Born Scorpio with Aries rising on October 27, 1930, in Jackson Heights, Long Island, he was 77 and HIV-negative when he was overcome by complications from pneumonia.

Defining an era and a literary genre, he was one of the gay pioneers who changed the post-Stonewall fin de siècle of the twentieth-century. He was an urgent author in whose work fans saw the evolution of themselves in a performative S&M lifestyle.

For over forty years, after meeting on February 13, 1963, he lived with his lover-partner, Fred Yerkes, in the Hollywood Hills above the Sunset Strip and below the iconic white Hollywood Sign, the symbol of Los Angeles ambition, sex, politics, backstabbing, and dreams.’ [text by Jack Fritscher]

Charles Edward Kerbs (August 8, 1940 – March 4, 2002), better known by his pen name MATT, was an American artist, actor, and playwright active in the late twentieth century.

As a teenager, Kerbs found a liking and talent for drawing the male form, especially wrestlers, cowboys, leathermen, and servicemen. He was an avid reader of the beefcake magazine Physique Pictorial and drew inspiration from gay artists such as Tom of Finland and Harry Bush. His drawings were first published in Grecian Guild Pictorial when Kerbs was 16 years old.
