It has been so encouraging to see the way that the people of Ballymena and beyond are responding the call to pray for many to come to an awakening at the name of Jesus through Awaken 2026.

This time last week we only had a very small number of prayer hours covered and now we have over three quarters of the 168 prayer hours filled. Wow, praise the Lord!

The Awaken week begins on Sun 6th Sept at 4.30pm as Ballymena Methodist host our Launch Worship, with the first prayer room then beginning at Ballymena Methodist from 6.00-11.59pm. We then move to Bethel Temple in Portglenone. We have 16 churches across the area participating this year+ one shop unit in The Fairhill Centre. We are describing this unit is a ‘sacred space in the market place’. The Fairhill prayer room can be found between The Works and DV8.

As we look back over the last few years we are so thankful for how the Lord has led His people to dig deeper in united prayer for Ballymena and beyond. This year we already have 16 churches signed up to host a prayer room + we have the amazing opportunity to have a sacred prayer space in the market place… The Lord has opened the door for us to host a prayer room in the old ‘Claire’s’ shop in The Fairhill Shopping Centre.

Awaken 24/7 Prayer Rooms were amazing, you have been amazing, the Lord has been doing amazing work through our prayers!

In June, when Ballymena was becoming known around the world for riots spilling onto our streets many of us were challenged to pray. Through the Scripture,

‘Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.’ Ephesians 5:14

a number of us were moved to invite Ballymena and beyond to prayer 24/7, 168hrs, in conjunction with the first ever 24-7 Prayer Global Week of Prayer.

We weren’t sure if we would fill all the hours, but we have been blown away by what we have seen the Lord do:

• Launch Worship with Alain Emerson challenging us to, ‘Rewrite the story over Ballymena’ through our prayers.

• Over 10 churches involved - big, small, new, old, protestant & catholic.

• 9 specific Prayer Rooms.

• 400+ attendees at the Prayer Rooms.

• 600+hrs of prayer offered.

• Thanksgiving Worship with testimony and prayers offered with 300+ people.

Numbers are not everything, but they do give a sense of the commitment to see awakening here in Ballymena...

Other encouragements are:

• Powerful personal encounters with the Lord.

• Individuals healed.

• Young adults praying for hours.

• Older folk being inspired.

• People being welcomed into each other’s churches across the community.

• Unity being built.

Now is the time to give huge thanks, to reflect on what the Lord has done and is still doing, to rest in the Lord’s goodness… and begin to wonder what next Lord…?

Resting in God’s Glory

Today is Sunday the 7th of September. On this day of rest we celebrate the fact that the mission of God is not just something that happens to us and through us, but for us and in us; and we anticipate the day when Christ’s mission will finally be accomplished and the whole earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of God (Habakkuk 2:14).

Rabbi Abraham Heschel writes,

‘Six days a week we wrestle with the world, wringing profit from the earth; on the Sabbath, we especially care for the seed of eternity planted in the soul.’1

As I settle into prayer now, Lord, show me what it means to ‘care for the seeds of eternity in my soul’. Help me to stop counting the minutes, to relinquish control. Inspire me to live and breathe with greater ease, as an eternal being resting in your presence.

This week, I’ve been reflecting on and praying for God’s glory to be known across the nations as part of the Global Week of Prayer. Today I stop striving to pray for the world and instead make space for the Lord to preach the gospel to me, to come and save me. Sunday is a day to be born again – again! And so I take time now to get right with God, to repent of my sins, to give thanks for the cross, to receive the Spirit once more.

Turning my attention outwards, I pray for the gospel community as it gathers today:

Lord, you told us to ask the Father to send out workers to bring in the harvest. This we must do. Please ignite a renewed passion for the gospel in our lives and a sense of urgency in our churches. May we preach the way of salvation clearly today, so that many might see and believe and put their trust in you. Mobilise us as a missionary movement, in the communities where we live and to every tribe and tongue.

Holy Spirit, revive us again. Come to us once more as you came to that first prayer room in Jerusalem, that we might be propelled out of our meetings and onto the streets with new courage to preach the gospel, that thousands might encounter the resurrected Saviour, Jesus Christ.

I take a moment now to earth these big prayers in my own life, naming friends, family members or colleagues who don’t yet know Jesus. I ask for opportunities to share ‘the hope that (I) have’ (1 Peter 3:15) with at least one of these people this week.

Sabbath Blessing

May this day bring Sabbath rest to my heart and my home.

May God’s image in me be restored, and my imagination in God be re-storied.

May the gravity of material things be lightened, and the relativity of time slow down.

May I know grace to embrace my own finite smallness in the arms of God’s infinite greatness.

May God’s Word feed me and His Spirit lead me into the week and into the life to come.2

Be An Answer to Prayer

Today I am reflecting on a challenging reminder God gave to his people through the prophet Micah…

With what shall I come before the LORD and bow down before the exalted God? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I offer my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:6–8 (NIVUK)

The book of Micah delivers a clear warning to God’s people – your actions have consequences. The people of Judah can’t be God’s representatives among the nations if their society doesn’t reflect the character of the one they claim to represent. Flamboyant sacrifices and rituals mean nothing if the very same people ruthlessly exploit the most vulnerable in their midst. God’s people must follow God’s priorities – showing their love for him by very practically loving their neighbour.

Ask

God declares that his people should be just, merciful and humble. Which of these three attributes do I most reflect? Which one is God inviting me to personally pay more attention to?

Though we are far from perfect, I love the ways in which the global Church does reflect God’s justice, mercy and humility today. I pray now for one project run by Christians in my community – maybe a food bank, a homeless charity or youth provision – and I ask God to provide all they need, multiplying their impact by the power of his Spirit.

As I return to today’s passage, I listen for a word or phrase that speaks particularly into my personal context today.

And how can I display the goodness of God through my humble service of others?

Mid-Antrim Vineyard Prayer Room

MAV not only hosted the Prayer Room for 24hrs, but also hosted Crack of Dawn prayer walkers on Wednesday morning.

Wellington Presbyterian Church Prayer Room

Wellington hosted for 12hrs and many prayed fervently through the night for awakening in Ballymena and beyond.

Ballymena Methodist Prayer Room

The Methodist Prayer Room was a beautiful space for a creative expression of prayer for 12hrs on Thursday.

Victory Praise Community Church

Victory Praise started their 24hrs with their weekly Church prayer meeting, with others joining in. Among many others they also hosted the Ballymena House of Prayer for 2 hours of intercession.

The Prayer Room moves to the Church of God on Fry’s Road for 12hrs this evening, before moving to West Church for 12hrs and then finally High Kirk for 24hrs.

Pursuing God’s Presence

Today is Friday the 5th of September, and this week, during the Global Week of Prayer, we are joining with Christians across the world to pray for God’s greatness to be known! Today also marks a special anniversary for 24-7 Prayer, the movement behind Lectio 365. Twenty-six years ago today, a church on the south coast of England started a creative non-stop prayer experiment that sparked a global movement of prayer, mission and justice.

Since then, over a quarter of a century has been filled with people in universities, workplaces, schools, shopfronts, festivals, caravans, shipping containers, bamboo huts, and even in churches, learning to pray and becoming an answer to prayer for others. By praying with Lectio 365, you are a part of this international, interdenominational movement. So, on this special day, we will reflect on the call to pursue God’s presence every day, and to carry God’s presence to others.

The people of Israel are camped at the foot of Mount Sinai while God speaks with Moses at its summit. In their impatience, the people create an idol to worship. So God declares that his special presence will no longer go with them. Moses can’t accept this and boldly asks God to show mercy…

The LORD replied, ‘My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.’

Then Moses said to him, ‘If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here. How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us? What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?’

And the LORD said to Moses, ‘I will do the very thing you have asked, because I am pleased with you and I know you by name.’

To Moses, God’s promises seem pointless without God’s presence. Despite being freed from slavery and promised a land of their own, Israel would be nothing special unless their liberator and provider lived with them. Today, the Church is distinguished not by our good works, our generosity, our moral character, or how engaging our gatherings may be – great as these things are. The only thing that distinguishes God’s people today is the very same thing that distinguished the people of Israel then, nothing more and nothing less than the personal presence of God.

Would I notice if the presence of God was not with me today?

Holy Spirit, please fill me afresh. Alert me to your presence in the many mundane moments my day may hold.

Father, I name every expression of your Church that I can think of in my area.

Send your Spirit to revive and refill us. Direct our plans, fuel our acts of service, empower our attempts at evangelism and distinguish us from those we live and work alongside. ask you to show me how I can be a trusted and compassionate friend to them today.

As I return to the passage, I imagine myself in the place of Moses. How do I feel arguing with such passion before the manifest presence of God?

What unique insight might Moses’ perspective bring to this moment?

From Eden (Genesis 2) to the New Jerusalem (Revelation 21–22), the desire of God is to be with his people. Throughout the pages of the Bible, the invitation is repeated again and again to remain constantly connected to (John 15), and in conversation with (1 Thessalonians 5:17) God. Every Christian is a living, breathing, walking, talking 24-7 prayer room. Because I follow Jesus, God dwells in me (1 Corinthians 6:19), and I carry God’s presence, by his Spirit, wherever I go (Acts 1:8).

What will I pray for, and with whom will I share the powerful reality of God’s presence today?

Lord, I am far from perfect, your people are far from perfect, but, in all our brokenness, you are our hope. I pause to reflect on whether I have turned away from God and, like the people of Israel, given my heart and put my hope into something else. Please forgive me, Lord, and renew your Spirit within me, so that I can carry your presence to someone who desperately needs you today.

Today I join the prophet Ezekiel in one of his most famous visions: a valley of dry bones…

[The LORD] asked me, ‘Son of man, can these bones live?’

Then he said to me, ‘Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD! This is what the Sovereign LORD says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the LORD."‘

So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone. I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them.

Then he said to me, ‘Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to it, ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: come, breath, from the four winds and breathe into these slain, that they may live. ‘So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet – a vast army.’ Ezekiel 37:3–10 (NIVUK)

This valley of death represented the people of God in exile. They’d lost their freedom, their land and their access to God’s presence in his temple. All hope was gone. Only the dry and dusty bones of what they had once been remained.

But it’s in this valley of death, this graveyard for disappointed hopes, that God’s resurrection Spirit breathes new life.

Ask

Father, thank you that your grace is sufficient for me today; that your power is made perfect in my weakness (1 Corinthians 12:9). I name the areas of my life that feel dry, hopeless or even dead. Come breath of God, breathe in me that I may live!

Father, I name a nation locked in prolonged and bloody conflict at present. Lord, where there seems to be no human hope for peace, I turn to you. Come, breath of God, to these valleys of death and bring an end to the violence.

As I return to today’s passage, I explore it with my imagination. What do I see, hear, smell, or sense as I stand with Ezekiel in this vision of a valley?

I continue to linger in this vision, staying within the scene and allowing it to come to life in my imagination.

I imagine the dry bones are God’s people – his Church – around the world today. Without God’s breath, his Spirit, all our good intentions, all our worthy actions and our most eloquent words, are impotent. The global Church needs the breath of God, and the world needs the message and ministry of God’s Church!

Lord Jesus, I pray the words of Ezekiel over your people around the globe today: come, breath of God, come, Holy Spirit, from the four winds and breathe into us, revive us so that we may live! Stand us on our feet – a vast army – ready to lay down our lives to see the whole world liberated by your love.

And now, as I prepare to take this time of prayer into the coming day, the Lord who loves me encourages me in 2 Corinthians:

‘…for Christ’s sake… delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.’ 2 Corinthians 12:10 (NIVUK)

Powerful Vulnerability

Today I am reflecting on the call to prayer for a church community…

Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. Is anyone among you ill? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops. James 5:13–18 (NIVUK)

This is a beautiful picture of Christian community at its best. When the Church is healthy, humble and full of the Holy Spirit, it is a place of support, joy, faith, mercy, compassion and restoration. Sounds amazing – I’m in! Well, at least I’d love to be prayed for, celebrated and supported through illness. But, this idyllic picture of a Christ-centred community gets a little uncomfortable when I’m encouraged to confess my sins to someone else. I’d prefer it if this was a solo practice, but James’ picture of the Church connects humility and vulnerability with powerful prayer.

What has my experience of sharing vulnerably with others in church been like? Am I grateful for safe and loving friendships, or have I been burned by the judgement or brokenness of others?

I share with God anything that holds me back from investing in the kind of safe, loving and forgiving relationships James describes.

I think about the members of my church community.

Holy Spirit, bring to mind someone who is struggling with a difficult situation, with illness, or someone in need of forgiveness. I pray for them now and ask you to show me how I can be a trusted and compassionate friend to them today.

As I return to today’s passage, I listen for a word or phrase that speaks particularly into my personal context today.

Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. Is anyone among you ill? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops. James 5:13–18 (NIVUK)

What is the particular invitation of the Holy Spirit to me today through this passage?

I notice how steeped in prayer this community is. I want to learn to pray powerfully and effectively like Elijah but, when I pray on my own, it can be hard to find the words or to pray with perseverance. Who are the people in my church that inspire me to pray bolder prayers?

Lord, may the rain of your Spirit fall on my nation. I want everyone to experience your presence and love. How do you want me to gather with others from my church this week to pray for your kingdom to come, your will to be done and your glory to be known in our region?

And now, as I prepare to take this time of prayer into the coming day, the Lord who loves me says in Matthew’s Gospel:

‘…truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.’ Matthew 18:19 (NIVUK)

Launch Worship

We are giving huge thanks for the way the Lord was so evidently present as we gathered to worship, pray and be encouraged through hearing the story of the prayer movement the Lord has birthed in Ballymena.

We are so grateful for the way Alain Emerson brought a challenging message encouraging us to align ourselves with the Lord. Reflecting on the story of Jehoash in 2 Kings 13, he said this week is…

‘ …a moment of renewed alignment for the church… in Ballymena – a week when we align our hearts under the prophetic voice of the Spirit, when we submit our agendas, plans, ambitions and budgets to God.’

I wonder what could we see happen if we were able to align ourselves - all of who we are and our churches with the Lord? What could happen…?

Koinonia Prayer Room

The first 24hrs of our Awaken 24/7 Prayer Rooms were hosted by Koinonia St John the Baptist. The Koinonia Community had spent many hours preparing the prayer room and their efforts were such a blessing to all who went to pray, with over 60 people visiting.

Bethel Temple Prayer Room

Our second Prayer Room has been hosted by Bethel Temple, Portglenone. I have just come back from passing the baton on from them to Mid-Antrim Vineyard. It was so encouraging to hear the stories of young and old praying for hours. Again there were nearly 60 people came to the room and testimony of the Lord bringing healing. Wow!

Today I am reflecting on a well-known and often quoted part of Jesus’ famous Sermon on the Mount…

‘Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

‘Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!’ Matthew 7:7–11 (NIVUK)

Though I love the simplicity of this passage, I can’t help but wonder – what about the times I’ve sought God but struggled to find him, or when I’ve asked for something but the opposite has happened? Pete Greig suggests three reasons why I may not always get the answer I hope for:

First, God’s world has basic rules that most of the time God won’t violate. If I ask God to stop time because I’m not prepared for a deadline, he probably won’t.

Second, God’s war means there is an enemy actively opposing God’s plans. Just like the angel who was delayed in delivering a message to Daniel, spiritual opposition may be delaying the answers I am seeking (Daniel 10:10–14).

And finally, God’s will: am I asking for what God wants or what I want? Can I really expect a loving Father to grant my every unhelpful or unhealthy wish?1

Ask

Am I carrying any pain or disappointment because of an unanswered or yet-to-be-answered prayer?

Father, I bring this pain to you. I know that your ‘silence is not the same as [your] absence’.2 As I wait in your presence, would you heal my heart and give me the courage to ask again.

I think of one non-Christian I know who I’ve prayed would follow Jesus, but has yet to find faith…

Father, I ask again: stir them to seek you...

As I return to today’s passage, I pay particular attention to my feelings as I read these words:

‘Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

‘Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!’ Matthew 7:7–11 (NIVUK)

I take a moment now to reflect on any particular feeling stirred within me by this passage.

The verbs in Jesus’ invitation – ask, seek and knock – are all in the present active imperative. In other words, Jesus is inviting me to ask and keep on asking, to seek and keep on seeking, to knock and keep on knocking. I’ve yet to reach the end of my story and, while I still have breath, with the Spirit’s help, I am called to persevere.

Jesus, my perspective is imperfect. Please show me what it means to pray ‘your kingdom come, and your will be done’ for each of the situations I am concerned about today.

I begin this Global Week of Prayer by reflecting on a well-known promise about God’s power to heal a nation…

‘When Solomon had finished the temple of the LORD and the royal palace… the LORD appeared to him at night and said:

‘I have heard your prayer and have chosen this place for myself as a temple for sacrifices. ‘When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place. I have chosen and consecrated this temple so that my Name may be there for ever. My eyes and my heart will always be there.’

2 Chronicles 7:11–16 (NIVUK)

How can I pray for nation-sized problems? When my news feed is filled with stories of wars, disasters and humanitarian crises, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. What power do I have to turn back drones, alter weather patterns, or provide food and shelter for millions? But this ancient promise to God’s people reminds me that, when I can’t be God’s hands and feet in these circumstances, there are four keys that can help me pray effectively:

First, know who I am.

Second, remember who God is.

Third, admit my part in the problem.

And fourth, pray without quitting until God’s will is done.

Ask

This morning I’m going to use these four keys to pray for a nation in crisis.

I begin by remembering that I am nothing more or less than one of God’s people.

Holy Spirit, please fill me afresh. Prepare me to pray by bringing to mind anything I’ve done wrong that I need to say sorry for.

God, would you draw my attention to a particular crisis around the globe right now…

As I name this nation before you, I know you are listening and care even more than I do about the people involved. May your kingdom come, your will be done and your glory be seen there as it is in heaven.

As I return to the passage, I look out for a particular word or phrase that the Holy Spirit seems to be highlighting to me today.

I notice the word ‘chosen’. God did not need a temple – the whole of creation was made for him to inhabit. But in response to the love of David and Solomon, God chose to put his special presence in the throne room they built for him. Today, God chooses to place his presence, his Holy Spirit, in the living breathing temple of the Church (Ephesians 2:19–22).

The God who commands the destiny of nations also dwells in me. His ears are attentive to my prayers, so what will I bring to his attention today?

Jesus, I surrender my prayers to you. You know what’s best for all peoples on the earth, so I lay down my opinions and my limited perspective. Teach me to pray in your name and for your will. Even as this morning prayer draws to a close, would you put another nation on my heart and give me your words to pray over them.

And now, as I prepare to take this time of prayer into the coming day, the Lord who loves me says in John’s Gospel:

I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

Jesus, My Saviour, Friend and Lord,

I’m hearing your call to me: “wake up, oh sleeper”. I’m here in response. Shine on me.

I choose to return to You with all my heart.

Jesus, My Rabbi and Teacher,

I choose to lavish time to be with You, to learn of You, and do as You did.

A previous blog-post ended with the question, ‘What would it be like for you and me, the church in Ballymena, to be so awake to the Lord, that ….?’1

You may be asking, ‘how might I become more awake?’ The answers in Scripture are many – and usually involve a turning away from habits and mind-sets that don’t lead to life, and embracing practices that do, such as being continually filled with the Spirit, the regular reading of, meditating on and memorising the Word of God, fellowshipping with other believers, adopting spiritual disciplines of prayer, worship, thanksgiving, generosity, evangelism, etc.

However, one of the most powerful, but perhaps least practiced, disciplines of the Old and New Testaments is that of prayer with fasting. Fasting has been called the nuclear bomb of spiritual practices! On one’s own it is effectual; how much more potentially, impactful it is when a group or body of believers pray and fast together?!

Calls to wake up, and to return to the Lord with all our hearts, run throughout Scripture, OT and NT, and often include prayer with fasting – such as the call in 2 Chronicles 7:14 -

‘ …if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.’ [NIV]

While fasting isn’t mentioned specifically in the Scripture above, the words: ‘humble oneself’ is often code for fasting in the OT.

In Joel 2:12 – which, by the way, immediately precedes the promised outpouring of the Holy Spirit that is fulfilled at Pentecost. Wholehearted return of God’s people precedes revival:

‘ …turn and keep on coming to Me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning [until every hindrance is removed and the broken fellowship is restored]’ [AMPC]

And the call in Revelation 2:2-5 is a call to return to our first love – which Jesus appears to value above the Ephesian believers’ deeds, … hard work and … perseverance … intolerance of wicked people and the willingness to test those who claimed to be apostles but weren’t:

‘I hold this against you: you have forsaken the love you had at first. Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.’

The previous blog also asked, ‘Am I willing to set aside sleep patterns, time, the early hours, to join with others in the prayer room?’

Today, we are asking the question, ‘In this Awaken week of prayer, when I may deprive myself of some sleep, am I also willing to set aside food, even just one meal on the day(s) I am praying, to devote myself more fully to prayer on my own, and with others?’ Biblical fasting was always about food!2

We are invited, this coming week, to consider fasting a meal prior to your visit to the Prayer Room...

Yes, fasting can be misused or abused, but more serious is its neglect in our day. Jesus did not cancel the practice or forbid it to his disciples. Rather he said,

‘When you fast…’3

implying that he expected his disciples to fast regularly.

The early church used to fast twice a week, and even children from the age of three would take part. Perhaps, the powerlessness of the Church in the west in recent times might well be linked to our unwillingness to combine prayer with regular fasting.

Of prayer Martin Luther tellingly said,

‘Prayer is not overcoming God’s reluctance but laying hold of His willingness.’

We might also say the same of prayer with fasting.

The greatest need is still for people who are going to pray, worship and minister to the Lord through the night.

Psalm 134 says,

Praise the Lord, all you servants of the Lord
who minister by night in the house of the Lord.
² Lift up your hands in the sanctuary
and praise the Lord.

³ May the Lord bless you from Zion,
he who is the Maker of heaven and earth.

Psalm 134 is the last of 15 psalms of ascent. This psalm,

‘ …is a call to the priests and Levites of the temple to continue their service of praise…Charles Spurgeon suggested that the scene was of pilgrims departing Jerusalem in the darkness of early morning, calling out to the priests and Levites who stood watch at the temple.’1

The psalm refers to those who ​“minister by night in the house of the Lord”.

In the Bible, night often represents the time of waiting for God: ​“I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning” (Psalm 130:6). It reflects a gap between what is and what will be – and so is connected with the deep laments we see in the Psalms. ​“Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning” (Psalm 30:5).2

I wonder are you and I willing and able to stand in the gap between what is and what will be?

As we look out at our world today it is not difficult to see the need for us to Awaken to the greatness of God.

Jesus teaches us to pray,

‘…Your Kingdom come, Your will be done.’3

Over the last months the Lord has been calling the church in Ballymena and beyond to dig deeper in united prayer, to stand in the gap between His Kingdom and the everyday reality of life without hope for so many people in this area.

I wonder, are you and I willing and able to offer an hour or two to worship, pray and minister to the Lord through the watches of the night over this Awaken week of prayer?

Will we be amongst those, ‘who minister by night in the house of the Lord’, that we might see His Kingdom come and His will be done in our lives, churches, community, region and the nations?

“Satan dreads nothing but prayer. His one concern is to keep the saints from praying. He fears nothing from prayerless studies, prayerless work, prayerless religion. He laughs at our toil, he mocks our wisdom, but he trembles when we pray.”1

As we get closer to Awaken 24/7 Prayer Rooms I want to draw our attention to Psalm 63. In this Psalm David, who is in the wilderness of Judah, called out to the Lord in his distress. David reaches out to the Lord, ‘as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.’

O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you;
my soul thirsts for you;
my flesh faints for you,
as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
² So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary,
beholding your power and glory.
³ Because your steadfast love is better than life,
my lips will praise you.
⁴ So I will bless you as long as I live;
in your name I will lift up my hands.2

So often life can seem like, ‘a dry and weary land where there is no water.’ We get into a way of life where we get up in a morning and get on with the day. Our days all seem the same. We cope. We have,

‘…prayerless studies, prayerless work, prayerless religion.’

We go to church and observe the Lord in the sanctuary, however, we are stuck, not really living, our souls are thirsty, our flesh faints… we are not awake.

We know the answer and yet, we are unable to stop long enough to find fresh water.

‘Isaac reopened the wells that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham… and discovered a well of fresh water there.’3

Is it time to reopen the wells that have been dug in previous generations and rediscover the fresh water?

The longing in our lives is for the very presence of the Lord, the fresh water of His Spirit, that we are able to say with David,

‘…your steadfast love is better than life…’.

Will you and I allow ourselves to be awoken?

Will we so set our heart, soul, mind and strength on the Lord, throughout the day and the night, that we are we are able to say with David,

⁵ My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food,
and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips, ⁶ when I remember you upon my bed,
and meditate on you in the watches of the night;
⁷ for you have been my help,
and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy.
⁸ My soul clings to you;
your right hand upholds me.4

Why not set time aside in the Awaken 24/7 Prayer Rooms to reset, to awaken to the greatness of God, that you might see the greatness of God overflowing into and through your life to the people around you?

Are you willing to set aside your regular sleep patterns to seek the Lord. My previous experience of signing up to prayer through the early hours of the morning in a 24hr prayer room is one of deep encounter with the Lord.

Will you set the early hours aside with the Lord and sign up to pray?

Ezekiel 47 gives a vision of the fresh water of the Spirit overflowing from the Temple down to the eastern region of the Arabah,

‘… where it enters the Dead Sea. When it empties into the sea, the salty water there becomes fresh. ⁹Swarms of living creatures will live wherever the river flows. There will be large numbers of fish, because this water flows there and makes the salt water fresh; so where the river flows everything will live.’

What would it be like for you and I, the church in Ballymena, to be so awake to the Lord, that we knew and experienced the salty water becoming fresh…

‘where the river flows everything will live.’
