I heard a belief about destiny.

Her mother suffered. Now she suffers. Therefore, she assumes that pain is simply the inheritance passed from one generation to the next.

Years ago, during an Ayurvedic workshop, I heard a provocative phrase:

“Genetic determinism is dead. Epigenetic science gives hope to millions.”

That sentence does not mean genes are irrelevant. Nor does it mean we can think positively, eat perfectly, or receive enough treatments to erase every inherited condition.

It means something more honest—and more hopeful:

A genetic tendency is not always a predetermined outcome.

DNA Is Not the Entire Story

Our DNA contains biological instructions inherited from our parents. But genes are not the only elements involved in how those instructions are used. Epigenetic mechanisms help regulate gene activity, influencing which genes are expressed, when they are expressed, and how strongly they are expressed.

According to the research and teaching of Jeffrey Bland, Ph.D., epigenetic regulation is responsive to the conditions in which we live. What we eat, what we drink, how we move, how we manage stress, and whether we get adequate sleep can influence biological processes connected with gene expression.

Epigenetic changes do not usually alter the underlying DNA sequence. Instead, they affect how the body reads and uses genetic information.

The National Human Genome Research Institute explains that environmental and lifestyle factors can influence the epigenome—the system of chemical marks and proteins that helps cells determine how to use genetic information.

Nutrition, hydration, movement, sleep, stress, trauma, illness, toxins, relationships, aging, and the surrounding environment can all become part of the conversation between our genes and our lives.

The DNA may be the musical score, but epigenetic mechanisms help influence how the music is played.

Jeffrey Bland and Nutritional Biochemistry

Dr. Jeffrey Bland, a nutritional biochemist and one of the founders of functional medicine, has emphasized the importance of understanding health through the interaction of genetics, nutrition, metabolism, and environment.

His work helped popularize the idea that nutrition is not merely a source of calories or isolated nutrients. Food and drink provide biochemical signals that can influence cellular function, inflammation, detoxification, oxidative stress, immune activity, metabolism, and gene expression.

This does not mean that a particular food can “turn off” a disease gene or guarantee protection from illness. Nutritional biochemistry is more complex than that. The effects of food and drink depend on the whole dietary pattern, the individual’s physiology, the microbiome, nutrient status, medications, genetics, sleep, activity, and many other factors.

Bland’s approach encourages us to ask better questions:

What nutrients and fluids are available to the cells?

How is the body processing those nutrients?

What inflammatory or metabolic pathways may be active?

How do digestion, absorption, detoxification, and elimination affect health?

Are we getting enough restorative sleep?

Which environmental factors may be placing stress on the system?

How can nutrition, hydration, movement, and rest support the body’s capacity to adapt?

In this view, food is not simply fuel. It is information.

Dr. Michael Greger, Genes, and Nutrition

Dr. Michael Greger, M.D., has also discussed the relationship between genes, nutrition, and disease risk. His work emphasizes that inherited genetic variants may influence susceptibility, but dietary patterns and lifestyle factors can strongly affect whether that susceptibility becomes clinically significant.

A family history of heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers, or other chronic conditions may indicate increased risk. But risk is not the same as certainty.

Greger frequently highlights research showing that diets centered on whole plant foods—such as vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds—can support cardiovascular health, metabolic function, and overall disease prevention. These foods provide fiber, vitamins, minerals, polyphenols, and other compounds that interact with biological pathways involved in inflammation, oxidative stress, blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose regulation.

The responsible conclusion is not that nutrition can overcome every genetic condition. It is that nutrition, hydration, sleep, movement, and other lifestyle factors may influence the biological environment in which genetic tendencies are expressed.

Genes may load the gun, as the familiar phrase suggests, but environment and behavior can influence whether the trigger is pulled. Even that metaphor is incomplete, because biology is not a simple machine. Still, it helps communicate an important principle:

Inherited risk deserves attention, not surrender.

Predisposition Is Not Predestination

A person may inherit:

A particular spinal structure

A tendency toward inflammation

Greater sensitivity within the nervous system

Connective-tissue characteristics

Metabolic vulnerabilities

Genetic variants that affect nutrient metabolism

Behavioral patterns learned within a family

Beliefs about what pain means and whether recovery is possible

These factors matter. But they do not automatically tell us what must happen next.

Two people can have similar genetic vulnerabilities and experience very different health outcomes. Biology emerges through the interaction of genes, development, environment, behavior, injury, stress, social conditions, nutrition, hydration, sleep, and medical care.

The developing science of pain also suggests that epigenetic processes may participate in chronic pain and nervous-system sensitization. However, this research is still evolving. It does not yet give us a simple test or a guaranteed method for “switching off” pain.

What it gives us is a more spacious question:

Instead of asking, “Who in my family gave me this?” we can ask, “What is influencing its expression now?”

That is a powerful change in perspective.

When Treatment Is Not Changing the Pattern

Receiving an adjustment five days a week while remaining in constant pain does not necessarily mean chiropractic care is wrong. But it does mean the situation deserves reassessment.

Any treatment should have a clear purpose, measurable goals, and periodic evaluation.

We should be able to ask:

Is the pain changing?

Is function improving?

Is sleep improving?

Is the person becoming stronger and more independent?

Has the diagnosis been reconsidered?

Are there inflammatory, neurological, metabolic, structural, emotional, nutritional, sleep-related, or occupational contributors?

Is the treatment helping—or merely being repeated?

More treatment is not always the same as more healing.

Persistent pain may require a broader, coordinated evaluation involving the appropriate medical, neurological, orthopedic, rehabilitative, psychological, nutritional, or other healthcare professionals. New weakness, numbness, changes in bowel or bladder control, fever, unexplained weight loss, severe night pain, or rapidly worsening symptoms require prompt medical assessment.

The Ayurvedic Perspective: The Seed and the Field

Ayurveda has always understood the human being as more than a fixed biological object.

We are born with prakriti—our constitutional nature and inherited tendencies. But our present condition, or vikriti, is continuously shaped by food, drink, digestion, sleep, season, age, relationships, stress, sensory experience, daily rhythm, and environment.

Ayurveda does not describe genes in the modern molecular sense. Its traditional concepts should not be presented as direct equivalents of DNA, epigenetic marks, or gene expression. Yet Ayurveda offers a useful framework for thinking about inherited potential and lived experience.

A seed carries potential.

But the field matters.

The soil matters.

The climate matters.

The timing matters.

The care of the gardener matters.

In Ayurvedic language, inherited constitution may influence tendencies, but daily habits and accumulated imbalances can shape how those tendencies appear. Digestion, or agni, is central to the Ayurvedic understanding of nourishment and transformation. The quality of food matters, but so do appetite, digestion, absorption, elimination, hydration, sleep, stress, and the ability to maintain appropriate routines.

Ayurveda also emphasizes ahara, or food, as a foundation of health. Food is selected not only for its nutrient content but also for its qualities, preparation, timing, compatibility, and effect on the individual.

This perspective can complement—not replace—modern nutritional biochemistry. Jeffrey Bland’s work examines food, drink, sleep, and lifestyle as influences on biochemical pathways and gene expression. Ayurveda examines food and daily living as part of a larger relationship among constitution, digestion, rhythm, environment, and balance.

These are different systems of knowledge. They should not be collapsed into one another. But both challenge the idea that inheritance alone dictates the full course of a life.

Nutrition and Lifestyle as Participation, Not Perfection

The goal is not to eat, drink, sleep, or live perfectly. Perfection is neither realistic nor necessary.

A thoughtful approach may include:

More vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds

Adequate protein and essential nutrients

Less reliance on highly processed foods

Attention to fiber and digestive tolerance

Adequate hydration appropriate to individual needs and medical conditions

Regular meal patterns when helpful

Consistent, restorative sleep

Regular movement appropriate to one’s abilities

Awareness of food allergies, intolerances, medications, and medical conditions

Professional guidance when a therapeutic diet or lifestyle plan is needed

Some people may require individualized nutrition counseling, laboratory evaluation, or medical supervision. Supplements can interact with medications and are not automatically safe because they are labeled natural.

Nutrition and lifestyle should support care, not become another source of fear or blame.

Hope Is Not a Promise. It Is an Opening.

I would never tell someone that changing her lifestyle will certainly eliminate her pain. That would replace genetic determinism with another kind of oversimplification.

But I would tell her this:

Your mother’s suffering is part of your history. It is not a complete forecast of your future.

You deserve more than an inherited expectation of pain.

You deserve a careful investigation of what is sustaining the pattern, what can be changed, what must be accommodated, and what combination of care might help you regain function and confidence.

Epigenetic science gives hope because it shows us that gene activity is responsive to the conditions in which we live.

Nutritional biochemistry gives us tools for understanding how food, drink, sleep, movement, and metabolism may influence cellular function.

The work of Jeffrey Bland reminds us to consider the relationship among nutrition, environment, metabolism, lifestyle, and gene expression.

The work of Michael Greger emphasizes that inherited risk can be influenced by dietary patterns and other modifiable factors, even though no diet can guarantee prevention or cure.

Ayurveda gives us a practical language for participating in health through rhythm, nourishment, digestion, movement, rest, awareness, and individualized care.

We cannot control every gene or every outcome.

But we can become more intelligent participants in the conditions through which our lives are expressed.

An Invitation

If you have been told—or have quietly concluded—that your pain, fatigue, inflammation, or family health history is simply your destiny, I invite you to examine that belief more carefully.

In an individualized Ayurvedic consultation, we explore your constitution, current imbalances, health history, digestion, sleep, stress patterns, daily rhythms, nutrition, hydration, lifestyle, and the medical care you are already receiving. The purpose is not to promise a cure or replace necessary medical treatment. It is to help you see the whole field and identify practical places where change may still be possible.

Subscribe to receive future articles on Ayurveda, epigenetics, nutritional biochemistry, pain, longevity, and the living relationship between inheritance and experience.

To explore a private Ayurvedic consultation with Dr. Helen Thomas, reply to this article or call 707-527-7313 for information about an appointment.

Your genes may contribute to the first chapter.

They do not write the entire book.

This article is educational and does not provide a diagnosis or replace care from your physician or other licensed healthcare professional.

Scientific and educational references:

National Human Genome Research Institute: Epigenomics Fact Sheet

Jeffrey Bland, Ph.D., research and educational work in nutritional biochemistry and functional medicine

Michael Greger, M.D., research reviews and educational resources on nutrition, genetics, and chronic disease prevention at NutritionFacts.org

Mahat, Buddhi, Ahaṃkāra, and the Body’s Living Map

Mahat, Buddhi, Ahaṃkāra, and the Body’s Living Map

DrHelenDC

Mahat, Buddhi, Ahaṃkāra, and the Body’s Living Map

Ayurveda inherited from Sāṃkhya philosophy a remarkably sophisticated map of human consciousness. Three important concepts within this map are mahat, buddhi, and ahaṃkāra.

Mahat means “the great principle.” It is universal intelligence—the underlying capacity of nature to organize itself into coherent patterns. We see an expression of mahat in the way an embryo differentiates into organs, a wound coordinates its repair, and the body continually adjusts breathing, circulation, temperature, and metabolism without conscious direction.

At the individual level, this organizing intelligence is expressed through buddhi—the faculty of discernment. Buddhi does more than accumulate information. It distinguishes what is helpful from what is harmful, what is true from what is merely familiar, and what requires action from what can simply be observed. In Ayurvedic psychology, healthy buddhi allows experience to be received, examined, and integrated b…

You’re sitting still, doing nothing alarming, and suddenly it’s pounding. Here’s the strange part: it never fully leaves. It just goes underground. In classical Ayurveda — the medical system I’ve studied for 40 years — this isn’t a malfunction. It’s Vata: the principle of movement, the wind in the nervous system, blown out of balance. It doesn’t pass like weather. It waits just offshore, right below your conscious mind, and rolls back in the moment you go still.

You can’t remember where you put things. Your keys. The sentence you were about to say. Why you walked into the room. The Charaka Samhita, written before the year zero, describes anxiety not as a thought disorder but as a spatial one — the mind has lost its seat. It’s no longer landed in the body. You cannot think your way out of an unhoused mind. You have to land it, and landing is a physiological event, not a metaphor.

And underneath it all, that feeling of nervous overwhelm you keep swallowing.…
