I was thinking about counting the colors around us. I then took a plant dyeing workshop Ryan got for me as a gift a few years back and was learning about pigments that are contained within other plants; how the color of a certain plant dye will often be quite different than you’d expect. I learned that plants are green because the chlorophyl inside the plant itself is green. I was fascinated by the concept that green is contained within green, the simplicity of that, the purity.

My favorite lyric of the whole song is:

“there is green inside the green,

there is red inside of me

there is blood,

I see them, I see me”

Ryan and I hung onto that phrase and decided to use it for the album title. Playing with synesthesia and the tension between concealment and exposure, sitting with the idea that we are made of the same stuff as everything that came before us, how that can feel like both a warning and a celebration at the same time.

As we move through our days, the present and the past become separated by a mere second. They feel closer as we think of time in its movement, both like a river and like a spiral. Cars pass by. What once was before us is behind us. We are clearer than we want to be.

The album artwork photographed by CJ Harvey is a nod to the title ‘I see them, I see me.’Jumping over/above, floating through the challenges we face, soaring above it, we can mitigate how much we let the chaos of our times in. We can engage but shake it off. We can see it, feel it, but also be carefully and tactically distanced, disentangling ourselves from the web of despair it’s so easy to fall into. The fine line of jumping and falling comes to question here: are we falling from the sky? Are we jumping through it? What is the difference? Is it just the point of view? Are we in distress or are we transcending the pain?

Working with our friend Ash Kron on the 'Lasagna' video felt like handing her the keys, fully trusting where she'd take us. She built a whole world out of our song; a burger chain sweepstakes prize, a car breakdown, a fight, a bike ride all the way to NYC with our dog Woody in the basket.

We filmed the video at a lot of our favorite local spots; a thrift store we love, the restaurant I work at (Zinnia’s Dinette), our favorite venue (Avalon Lounge), Lebanon Valley Speedway where we see stock car racing and where Ryan’s been going since he was little. We enlisted a bunch of friends to be in the video as burger chain enthusiasts, friends waving us on our journey, motorcyclists, jacuzzi party people.

Even in its absurdity, there's an undercurrent of love and challenged patience. In the end, we forgive, we celebrate together. The overarching narrative is, in a sense, a distillation of the song: love that's tested but still standing.

Sometimes when you’re deeply intertwined, you’re so close you can’t really see one another. You want the other to break in two, to reveal what’s underneath. You keep yourself busy, you fill your day with tasks but the other person is waving in the wind all around you, you feel them everywhere. You feel small, stuck, and frantic all at once. I started writing this song in 2018 and found myself tabling it. It resurfaced last year at the right time and we were able to finish it.

We recorded it at our home studio 12 Lb Genius and with Sam Evian at Flying Cloud. Our friend Karly Hartzman (Wednesday) sang beautiful harmonies. Adam Brisbin elevated the whole song with his slide guitar. Our bff Ellington Peet played the drums. The rest was played by Ryan and I.

I seriously can’t wait to share more about our album that will be out in September but for now, I’ll just say that this was the most fun we have ever had recording an album. We put our whole Pu$$ieS into this in a way that felt like an opening, a remembering. It felt good and right and curious.

Standing on a bridge seeing apartments illuminated around you, being understood by a friend who knows your story, witnessing someone pull their life together like tenderly tying a shoelace; these are moments where we find each other in the soup of it all and choose to really see one another and stay. I see the blue around you as if we carry the hard times we go through around and within us like a glow.

Recording this live with one of our musical idols, Phil Weinrobe, at the Chicken Shack — surrounded by talented musicians and friends — was one of the best moments of my life. The energy in that room was captured in a way I’d never experienced before, from the fiddle solo to the vocal take to the tambourine Phil pointed to Nick Kinsey to pick up mid-song. Phil is a master of his craft and it was an honor to work with him to bring this song to life.

We shot the music video on super 8 with our friend Wyndham Garnett with help from Katianna Knittel at some of our favorite spots near our home. Dani Ducharme drew on top of the footage and wrote out our lyrics. We are excited to share it with you all.

Spring was the name of my best friend and neighbor growing up who passed when I was in high school. Spring is a time and a feeling and memory for me. She taught me how to knit and to sit and drink Irish Breakfast Tea while we did puzzles together. She was a former heroin addict in her 50s who had been homeless in the Topanga creek for much of her youth. She had stories that she wasn’t ashamed to tell me as a kid that I still think of often. She changed my life.

Ryan and our friend Riley have been fixing up the porch — knocking down the old wooden beams, ordering wood for fresh ones, replacing the screens that have given up, the ones the winter has eaten through. We’ve decided to remove the ceiling to expose the A-frame of wood above. Now there’s so much space above us.

We went to an antique store on Sunday, wandering through slowly. I found an embroidery stitched with the words god is love in careful letters, each one with its own color, and I stood there holding it for a long time. Someone feels this is true and I want to too. I think I do sometimes.

I lit candles in ceremony with a friend on the one year anniversary of losing her brother. Grief is its own kind of river, I think — sometimes calm, sometimes flooding. I cried harder than I’ve cried in a long time. I sang a song for her, for them. I know what it’s like to lose a brother in my own way. My heart. All the love that doesn’t stop moving just because someone is somewhere else, someone isn’t.

There are so many people I love. I love people I’ll never know. I feel the love as it comes up in heart break for Iran, for Palestine, for people’s lives being torn apart by ICE. I want to believe in a better world. God is love.

We have a National tour coming up in a month and I can feel the anticipation of it building — the loading of the van, the long drives, the rooms full of people there to hear music. I can’t wait to see you out there.

I covered Ray Bull’s new song “Marry a Skater” yesterday afternoon on the piano as the light was shifting. I’m wearing a mohair halter top I knitted, reveling in the warmth of this new season. We had a major thunder storm last night. Ryan and I played cards with our friend as the sky flashed. The intermittent claps of thunder brought Woody our dog shaking into Ryan’s lap. He slept next to us all night. I love my home and my pets. I also love to tour. I love the balance of the both. Really looking forward to seeing you all out there in this big, bad world of ours. Music is magic. I remind myself that when I listen, when I sing, when I feel the thunder through the table as I slap a card down (yes, I won the game).

The crocuses, daffodils, and forsythias have bloomed over the past few days in succession. Usually spring ignites a bit of a panic in me but this year I feel the panic like an engine starting, like a cup filling with water. This year, I’m ready to thaw.

There will be four great bands playing and we’ll be closing the night with our set at ~10pm. We’ll have our full, five-piece band with us and are excited to share lots of new music. This will be our only NYC show for the foreseeable future.

At some point soon, I will share a written piece about the passing of my angel dog Ella. She died last week in my arms. I have a cutting of her fur by me as I write this. I have a sculpey sculpture on my dresser made by my aunt. I have photos of she and I together on hikes in Topanga. We laid her in the ground and thanked her for all the years of love she gave us. I’m still processing it; soon I’ll be ready to share about knowing Ella, witnessing her in life and death. It is an honor.

Honoring

When I think about honoring,

at first, I think about gravity

and the bizarreness of our place in space.

Like, the fact that we’re floating perfectly in tandem,

connection, conjunction, with the moon,

the stars, and the massive ball of flames.

I think about that feeling when I learned about the Goldy Locks

explanation of biotic life on Earth.

Like, we just found a very lucky niche to land. And by we,

I mean, of course, the cells inside us

that landed all those billions of years ago on this here space rock

trapped in water frozen from many

life times spent in orbit.

And how orbits are, in so many ways, defined by

surrounding entities, bodies with

mass that make up a web of some predestined path.

Predestined, of course, by one another’s sheer weight.

And isn’t it just fantastical?

We’re here honoring the honoring.

I think, at first, about

space and time and place, of course,

because what else is there

for me to hold with such platitudes?

But, when second thought arises, I,

again,

see your voice

through a screen. I see you and,

for the first time, I understand what it means

to hold heart with honoring.

I am just realizing I haven’t written on here since July and a lot has happened! We finished tracking our next record, went on a Europe tour with Frankie Cosmos, signed to new management (thrilled about this!), and are now in the process of mixing the record. All very good things! The Europe tour was a dream come true. I am a big Frankie Cosmos fan so the shows were exciting for that reason + it was our first time touring in Europe and we had the best time with our bandmates. We took trains everywhere we went, which was a reprieve from the US driving tours. We ate great food, explored cities we’d never been to, and felt the world open up for us like exploring a seashell and discovering an entirely new shape when you flip it around. It was also awesome to meet so many lovely people that like our music in Europe! That was a pleasant surprise! We sold out of all of our merch and felt fulfilled and appreciated in the process.

Since getting home in December, we’ve been Wintering (with a Capital W); the wood stove is always on (I’m sitting by it as I write this now), I’ve been sleeping 10-12 hours a night (this is my ideal amount of sleep), enjoying snowy walks, playing board games, having a lot of cozy time with friends, cooking some very good meals (Ryan made a venison and wild boar chili the other night which we ate with all the fixin’s — cheddar cheese, sour cream, scallions, cilantro, and crushed tortilla chips — yum), playing music just Ryan and I (we’ve been exploring different time signatures by searching drum beats on YouTube and having duo jam sessions with piano, organ, guitar, voice in our living room), puzzling, reading a lot, dancing, doing yoga, riding my bike, and most importantly, hanging out with our pets. Ryan also works as a woodworker for a furniture designer in Hudson named Michael Robbins. He’s there five days a week building beautiful, handmade chairs and cabinets and couches and bedframes and tables, and, and, and… it’s awesome. He loves his job, which makes coming home from tour that much easier.

Another thing that makes coming home feel easy is that we have a show we’re looking forward to playing on January 23rd at the Hangar on the Hudson in Troy, NY. We’ll be opening for Liam Kazar who just released his new album Pilot Light! Ryan and I will be playing as a duo. We hope to see y’all there <3

We’ll have more announcements in the coming months that I’ll make sure to share on here as well. It’s always nice to write a little more long-form and remember that there’s a way to reach y’all that’s separate from the Instagram whirlwind. As always, thank you for listening and supporting us. We have a lot of upcoming shows to share! First and foremost, if you’re in Chicago, come to our headline show on August 14th at The Empty Bottle with youbet! After that, we’ll be headed to Avrom Farm Party in Wisconsin for a weekend of music, camping and relaxing in the woods. We’ve heard great things about this festival and are excited to get to participate this year. The vibe is essentially summer camp with great music. Tickets are still available and can be found here!

In a few days, we’ll be headed on tour with one of our idols, Robert Lester Folsom. We’ll be bopping around the East Coast and parts of the midwest. Ryan and I are going to be playing a duo set of mostly completely new music. We are really excited to share these songs and also to get to spend time together on the road. It’s been a while since we’ve done a duo tour. We both work a lot while we’re home so this will be a sort of vacation for us + we’ll get to play music together every night! We are also going to be selling some brand new merch designs!

We just announced a couple dates with Hovvdy this October! We are big fans and can’t wait to play with them. Their song “Brave” was Ryan and my first favorite song together seven years ago. October 17th is also my thirtieth birthday so we’ll be celebrating my lyfe too! It’ll be our first time playing Levon Helm Studios, one of our favorite venues where we live. Get tickets ASAP; the shows will likely sell out quickly and we’d love to have y’all there!

Thank you to everyone who came out to our show Friday night at National Sawdust. We had such a special time and are so grateful for all of your support and love! Getting to play to a crowd of open, emotionally present, deep listeners makes my world go round. I never take it for granted. I receive y’all’s warmth like a hug. Raavi’s set was amazing — please go see them live if you haven’t already! It was a treat. Layered, full and unique with impressive instrumentation and strong, heartfelt vocals.

We just got home from the city a couple hours ago. I’m enjoying decompressing with my kitties. I’ll be going for a hike soon. It’s a beautiful day with bright blue skies + vibrant, lush greens all around me. I feel blessed to get to be this close to NYC and also have access to thriving tidal wetland, forest, grassland ecosystems. The Hudson River Estuary reminds of what a nutrient rich life-web looks like as I return from the raw, human Big Apple. I love them both. I love the balance and I love the loudness of my non-human neighbors! The birds are singing out. They are periodically interrupted by Ryan chain sawing the firewood we’ll burn this Fall and Winter. My cat Trilo enters the room and meows to me. I hear Woody’s paws clacking on the wooden floor. I am home.

We have a NY headline show at National Sawdust as a part of the Blue Note Jazz Festival coming up on June 20th. Raavi will be opening the show! We love their music! We’re going to be playing many new songs and are also taking requests for songs you’d like to hear that we don’t usually get to play during our opening slots. I remember seeing Frankie Cosmos live at Reed College over ten years ago for the first time. I came home and holed up to write a bunch of songs right away. I felt so inspired! Ryan and I have been listening to the Sleep and Solemnis EPs recently and were talking about how much they are influenced by her sound and lyricism! We’ll have to play some of those songs this tour :~)

We are grateful we get this opportunity to meet so many of you EU/UK fans who have been reaching out to us for years about coming to tour over there. We appreciate y’all’s support and are looking forward to saying hello at the merch table!

As many of you already know, I came down with covid and laryngitis within two weeks of each other last May while we were on our headlining tour. The combo package of those two maladies did me dirty… my right vocal cord was paralyzed and I was quite uncomfortable when I talked, chewed + swallowed, sang. The paralysis caused muscle tension dysphonia which led to more tension and pain overall. It was a pretty rough last half of the year. We had to cancel all of our shows and focus on resting and recuperating. I studied with a speech pathologist for a couple months to learn better speaking habits and have been studying with an amazing vocal teacher for the past five months. I had never studied how to sing properly and it has been an enlightening and deeply humbling experience! I’m emerging from my cocoon feeling much more educated and am very excited to get back to performing!

For the first few months of our hiatus, I wasn’t able to work because I wasn’t able to speak very much. During that time, I knitted a lot, hiked, sat by the fire with our cats (Trilobite, Zorza, and Alvin) and our dog (Woody), cooked nice meals with Ryan (fave current meal is a red lentil veggie stew), slept, and grieved. Over the past three months, as my voice has gotten more comfortable, I’ve been able to work more, thankfully. I love having a task; something to focus on outside of my own little inner bubble. I have been working at a restaurant, baby sitting, dog walking, taking a ceramic class, and volunteering occasionally for an agrarian alliance in my area. I have also been selling some knitwear online, which you can find here!

Ryan and I have been working on lots of new music over the past few months, too! It’s felt very good to get to dig into writing and recording again as my voice has gotten stronger and more comfortable. I can’t wait to share some new music with you all on this CYHSY tour. We’ll definitely be playing at least a couple new songs!

A little reflection from the East Coast to Midwest portion of our tour:

Wow! Y’all! We are completely blown away! We had no idea what to expect from this tour — we’ve been on the road a lot over the past seven years but we’ve never done a *proper headlining tour* in this *official* way before. Y’all showed up, you knew our words, you supported us at the merch table in a biiiggg way, you brought so much positivity and warmth to each and every show, I wanted to keep touring forever! Playing with Greg Mendez every night was also a dream come true. Greg and his wife V have an astoundingly beautiful duo set! We are such big fans and are honored we got to spend time sharing the stage with them. We’re also so grateful to have gotten to play with Grocer (Ryan’s wearing their shirt in the photo below;)), Aunt Katrina, Hello Shark, Joyer, Mantourage, poolblood, Mia Joy, Merce Lemon, and Amelia Cry til I Die. Getting to ask all of these beautiful friends to open these shows was a gift that kept giving. They are all brilliant musicians and songwriters.

I want to give a big shout out to our audience in Chicago who literally sang for me when I didn’t have a voice. I was slammed with a perfect storm of allergies and a cold that completely wiped my voice out after our show in Minneapolis. It was stressful and annoying and I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to continue the tour because I couldn’t get even a little peep to come out of my falsetto, which our entire set relies on! We decided not to cancel our Chicago show because I was determined that I’d be able to sing after steaming all day and resting my voice. However, 30 minutes before we were going onstage, I turned to our bandmates with tears in my eyes and squeaked out that I wasn’t going to be able to sing. We spoke with some folks at Sleeping Village (shout out to Alicia — you rule) and we all formulated a plan to do a karaoke set where we invite friends and audience members to come up to sing. We were all pretty uncertain how the set would go but we figured it’d be better than nothing. Our friend Carolina (their project is hemlock — look them up!!) came up to sing “I’m On Your Team” and “Birdseye”; Mia Joy sang “Often” and Greg Mendez joined her to sing “Rocket” together. We invited audience members to come up to sing the rest of the set and were completely floored by that fact that:

A) people were brave enough to get up in front of a big audience with no practice !! so brave!

B) people really knew the lyrics of our songs in core ways :’) including “Ella’s From Somewhere Else” which had come out less than a month prior and is a freaking SEVEN minute song!

C) the amount of love in the air and support for one another as a community of creatives was palpable and life changing.

Multiple people came up to us after the set and said that it had been a life changing night for them. We all felt the same way onstage. How lucky are we to get to share music with listeners who feel it all so deeply alongside us? It was one of those moments in life where you zoom out and are amazed by what you see. I saw people cheering for each other, celebrating each other’s bravery, I saw people from all different walks of life come together to really feel the music together. I am carrying the support I felt with me in my heart and I feel it there like a balm, reminding me what goodness looks like, how human nature is not just the vileness we see on the news, how we are loving and thoughtful and considerate of strangers, how we uplift each other when we need it most. You all sang my words when I couldn’t sing them myself. I will never forget it <3

We leave for tour today and are so excited to see you all soon! Our first three stops are tonight (5/6) in Washington, D.C., tomorrow (5/7) in NYC (our record release show :)), and then next night (5/8) in Boston! We’re releasing a video for the song “My Best Friend Needs” today as well! We had the best time making this video with our friends Richard Orofino and Pearl Dickson (of the band Sex Week). We were all able to go into full, creative, play-time mode thinking up a world where Ryan and I are best friends doing everything together. We play drums together, we chop wood together, we light a huge bonfire together as a nod to the album artwork.

In the album writing process, Ryan and I explored new avenues of trusting and of digging into our creative selves. This, of course, came with challenges, as every growth opportunity does. I had to learn how to open up my writing process and to allow myself to relinquish control. Ryan had to learn how to find confidence in vulnerability, pursuing his ideas without self-criticism. Together, we managed to land on exciting structures and chords. These are songs that I would not have written without Ryan, that Ryan would not have written without me. We created something entirely melded, a conglomerate other. We feel very proud and excited to share what we crafted together! Welcome to the world, Water’s Here in You!

In the dead of winter, Ryan and I turn to music. It’s part of what makes us love living upstate so much. We build a creative world within the comfort of our home. We’ve practiced this form of wintering every year since we moved to the East Coast in 2019. This particular winter, we were struggling in our personal lives. I was dealing with both physical and emotional health challenges, Ryan was overworked and exhausted. We had just arrived home from a stretch of touring and were depleted. I was questioning whether or not I wanted to continue pursuing music. We were grappling with overwhelming uncertainty and, in the midst of the precarity, we found ourselves writing and recording an album that we now look back on with exuberance. Isn’t it magical that art-making can transform a memory entirely? What once was painful is now cathartic. What once felt overwhelming is now simply a part of the soup of it all, simmering away, finding itself softened and full of flavor with just a little time. Like a cassava, some feelings need to be processed, boiled, mashed, seasoned, blended, and stewed in order to be delicious. We can sparkle through the chaos!

We’ll be playing an all-acoustic duo set of songs from the album. This show is free! It’s first come first serve so come early!

On May 7th, our second night on our upcoming tour, we’ll have our record release *show* at Baby’s All Right with Knifeplay, who we love! We’ll be playing as a full five-piece band and we’ll play an extended set of new material from the album (and some even newer muzic)! This is going to be a show for the books. We’re super excited to debut this music as a full live band! Tickets are moving fast so we suggest getting them ASAP!

We are leaving for tour in 12 days! I can’t believe how quickly time has flown! We are so excited to play for you all! Invite your friends to the shows, spread the word, shout it from the rooftops, send the link to friends in cities we’re going to! This is our first headlining tour, which is a big deal for us and we could use your help getting the word out!

“Ella’s From Somewhere Else” Video by Kia Wassenaar

We filmed this video at an overlook near our home and Kia Wassenaar edited it together with footage of beautiful Australian landscapes she shot during her time living there. I am wearing a dress that was hand sewn, dyed, and netted by Marieclaire Wyntreaux, NYC-based clothing maker and friend who I’m eternally inspired by and who also made the “Fugazi” dress ♥️

I wrote “Ella’s From Somewhere Else” after seeing Ella O’Connor Williams of Squirrel Flower perform at Tubby’s last winter. Seeing Ella live shakes something up in me that feels like a chiropractic adjustment, like she’s moving my spiritual spine back into alignment. Ella is also the name of my childhood dog who I named after Ella Fitzgerald (one of my all time favorite singers). Ella the dog is my favorite being on the planet. She supported me through my teens and I think of her as one of my best friends. It just so happens to have been her twelfth birthday two days ago — Happy Birthday, Ella!

When I got home from the Squirrel Flower show, I found some quiet space alone in our house late at night. I lit a few candles and kept the lights off. I grabbed a piece of paper and began to write down lyrics as quickly my hand could move. They were pouring out of me. The phrase “Ella’s from somewhere else” popped out. As I’ve written about previous songs on this album, I was thinking a lot about extraterrestrial life and, in this moment, Ella seemed like she wasn’t from this world. She glowed in the stage light in a particular way, she sang in an otherworldly manner, even the way she stood (still as a tree, unshakable on the stage) feels unique. Then, I began thinking of all the places Ella takes me in her songs. She takes me to specific memories of my childhood; we slip together through the seams of the place we’re in, through the floorboards, down into the soil. She takes me into the wonder and the pain just enough that I can keep my grounding.

I like that her name also is associated with Ella the dog, who is deeply connected to my childhood, family, support. I began blending the two Ella’s in the song and they morphed to have a double meaning altogether. Not only is Ella of Squirrel Flower from somewhere else, but Ella the dog is from somewhere else. They take me to that somewhere else place together. This song touches on both romantic and familial love, familial loss, the desire to curl into myself and isolate; how I feel damaged, porous, alone. The stanza “you’re my brother, you’re my family, you are everything to me” came out and singed me as I sang it. Even through the disasters, even through the loss, I hold love. “Ella’s From Somewhere Else” is, in large part, an exploration of a blended Ella, dipping a toe into the place that Squirrel Flower Ella takes me and allowing the name connotation to build a swell around Ella the dog and our memories together.

I’ve been playing around with clay recently, which has been very fun. I had a table at a pop-up celebrating Bloomsday’s single release “Dollar Slice” last Saturday in Brooklyn. It was a joy to get to lay all my pieces out and see how people interact with them. I love being able to make things and share them with others. There’s something particularly special about working with clay. I love the magic of popping a piece into the kiln and seeing it emerge entirely different with new colors, textures, and weight. I’m going to be making a website soon for my ceramics. I’m hoping to have it up and running before we leave for tour in a month! It is wild how quickly this winter has flown by! We’re excited to hit the road soon and are eager to play our new songs for you all :~)
