We are thrilled to share new music with you today! The debut album from the new band we share with our friend Elana (aka Party Nails) is available now for your listening pleasure. We believe it will be the perfect soundtrack for these precious remaining weeks of summertime sun and frolic.

This musical adventure began at our house in Saint Paul in November of 2022. We exchanged voice memos and lyric scribblings from our notebooks. We shared cheese curds and donuts and walks to the grocery store. We watched Josie & the Pussycats. We named ourselves Megasound.

Over the next three years, we traveled between Saint Paul and Los Angeles to write and record our songs. We opened for Letters to Cleo. We played college campuses and rock clubs. We bought matching outfits.

And now our album is finally out in the world! We are so happy that the songs are now yours, beloved Hat Heads. Writing and sharing myself via Bad Bad Hats is an amazing privilege and source of immense pride and satisfaction for me. But before I found my artistic and physical “voice”, as it were, my dream was always to be a songwriter in the background, to offer my songs to great vocalists and performers. To collaborate with Chris and Elana is so inspiring and to hear my words and melodies through the vessel of Elana’s voice, which is so riveting and beautiful, is an incredible joy for me.

We hope you love this record as much as we do!

Sweaty summer greetings to you all! I wanted to send a quick note to tell you about a new song out in the world. It’s called “Lemon Peel” and it’s performed by our new supergroup, Megasound.

As many of you know, Chris and I started another band with our dear friend Elana Carroll, aka Party Nails. We were feeling inspired by all the “The” bands of our youths: The Hives, The Vines, The Strokes, Josie and THE Pussycats. Basically, we wanted to hang out and ROCK.

So that’s what we did. And we came out the other side with a brand new album of songs for you. Megasound by Megasound comes out on August 7th on Don Giovanni Records. You can pre-order that bad boy here.

“Lemon Peel” has quickly become one of our favorite songs on the album (partially because it’s so fun to play live!). The weight of unspoken feeling and moments of hesitation are common themes in my songwriting. What can I say, I’m a ruminator! “Lemon Peel” expresses a longing to get out of one’s head and dive in to the beautiful chaos of the world.

Elana and I were trying to come up with the lyrics for the b-section of the chorus. Spinning like a…? Spinning like a…? And for some reason my mind recalled the old logo for Macalester College, where Chris and I went to school. A spiraling orange peel revealing a verdant globe.

“Passing like an 18-wheeler / spinning like a lemon peel”. Inspiration comes in the most surprising ways.

We hope you enjoy the song and our homemade camcorder music video. We filmed in a liquor store parking lot, a Cub Foods grocery store, a dandelion speckled field, and an open field on the edge of the airport. We recorded it all to a real cassette tape! Old school!

As for BBH, we are completing the finishing touches on LP5. Mostly just have to figure out the track order. Harder than you’d think!! And it makes a difference!

It is with great enthusiasm that we share with you today the debut single from Megasound by Megasound, our brand new other band.

Megasound is the combined musical power of ourselves and our friend Elana Carroll, aka Party Nails. Many years ago we were discussing our shared love of early 2000s rock music and the Josie and the Pussycats live action movie (and accompanying soundtrack, obviously) and a sparkling vision of a new band began to materialize. Nostalgia! Fun! Rock and roll! Today we unveil the results of our wild dreaming for all the world to see!

The first single is called “Supersize” and some of you may recognize it if you subscribe to the Bad Bad Hats’ Song Club. We aimed to mimic the Brit Rock sounds of our youth in a song about indulging in joyous excess and not letting life pass you by. We upped the throwback ante by filming an Apple ad-inspired music video at the Museum of Illusions here in the Twin Cities with the help of our frequent collaborator Dan Stewart.

Hat Heads, hello! We just returned from an amazing 5 week, 10,000 mile run around the country, performing our tunes in small and cozy spaces. We had so much fun! But it’s time to get the band back together for something a bit BIGGER.

That’s right, for the first time ever, we are bringing our debut album in its entirety - and in order! - to a stage near you! We’ve never played Psychic Reader top to bottom and we’ve only ever played all 10 songs at the release show in 2015. So this is going to be a brand new experience for everyone! And we hope you’re there to see it.

It’s release day! Psychic Readings is out today: a covers and remixes album that reimagines our debut album Psychic Reader. We can’t thank the bands enough for contributing to this, it’s so fun to hear the songs in a new way. Out now and available to purchase on Bandcamp or stream wherever you stream.

The third and final single from Psychic Readings, our special 10th anniversary covers and remixes compilation, is out today! And it is a special one! We present to you Hippo Campus covering “Midway”!

“Midway” is the enduring “hit” of Psychic Reader, a song that has taken us coast to coast and into the hearts and record collections of so many of you. I am immensely proud of this song and never tire of playing it live. Mostly because I love to hear you all sing along (and see you give a chorus “clap, clap”!).

All that said, I did hope when we handed it over to our friends in Hippo Campus that I would receive something that surprised me. And I was not disappointed! Hippo Campus reached into our collective past and pulled “Midway” boldly into the present. Inspired by the real dissolution of my first serious relationship (the ultimate goodbye taking place at Midway airport in Chicago), our original exudes a simmering sadness, while the cover injects the song with a hectic apprehension.

Hippo Campus took us on one of our very first tours, which included our first time playing at the storied First Avenue Main Room in Minneapolis. We are grateful to them, we love them, and we are so happy they took on “Midway” for us all!

The rest of the Psychic Readings comes out this Friday, August 29th. BUT. You can listen to the whole compilation EARLY with us tomorrow, Wednesday, August 27th at 10:00PM EDT / 9:00PM CDT during a special listening party hosted on Bandcamp.

We have several thrilling things to share on this Tuesday. Firstly and foremostly, we are so happy to share another cover from Psychic Readings, a Psychic Reader covers and remixes album. Please say hello to your old friend, “Joseph”, who has gotten a fresh makeover thanks to our dear friends in Ratboys. Available to stream now.

“Joseph” has long held the title of our favorite song to perform live, so it’s only fitting that the Rats, one of the great live bands of our generation, would take it on. “Joseph” was one of the first truly collaborative BBH songs (Chris arranged the instrumental first and then I wrote the song on top of it), so I love how I can hear the sum of Ratboys’ collective parts in their cover: Dave absolutely shredding, Julia’s iconic voice, Marcus and Sean holding down the rhythm section. We are so grateful to have them as friends in this rock and roll journey and so honored that they shared their talents with us for this collection. Hats love Rats!

What is a living room tour, you may be asking yourself? Well, a slew of generous music-loving people have agreed to let Bad Bad Hats, as well as 30-50 of our biggest fans, into their homes, yards, and small businesses to perform a lively acoustic set of original music and mostly relevant story-telling. It’s intimate, it’s fun, it’s Bad Bad Hats like you’ve never seen them before!!!

We toured the living room circuit in 2023, and we were so touched by the warmth and openness of both our wonderful hosts and the community of fans who came out to the shows. We hope you’ll come experience it for yourself next month!

We’re bringing our living room show series to the midwest this May. Do you have a large living room, loft space, community space, art gallery, yoga studio, coffee shop, or other space that can comfortably and safely host up to 50 people? We would love to play a show at your place. Submit today!

What is a living room tour? Well, instead of playing in typical rock n' roll venues, we're looking for small, intimate spaces where we can play an acoustic show for up to 50 people. It will be a stripped down set - just the two of us with our guitars. There will be songs, stories, we'll take questions as we go, and of course we'll mingle before and after the show! The idea is to skip the traditional venue experience and create something more personal and intimate.

In order for this tour to actually materialize, we are looking for hosts! Do you have a space that can comfortably and safely host up to 50 people? We would love to play a show there. All you have to do is let us borrow your space (for approx 3 hours) and check-in guests at the door upon arrival. In return you’ll get 5 free tickets for your friends and our eternal gratitude. We are primarily looking for non-traditional spaces, as opposed to traditional music venues.

Here are the target cities for May. This routing and timing is tentative. We'll adjust as we figure out where and when we have interested show hosts. If you're interested in hosting, please apply whether or not you see your specific city, or if the timing isn't quite perfect for your schedule. Anyone who applies will be added to our list of interested hosts and we'll use this information to plan the final routing.
