This is the sleight of hand, and once you become aware of it you can’t stop seeing it. The story of the “Islamization” of a pure Europe always begins in the present tense — boats in 2015, mosques in 2020, a headscarf in a school photo — as though these populations simply appeared, unprovoked, at the border. The story never begins where it actually starts: in 1830, when France invaded Algeria and stayed for 132 years. In 1882, when Britain occupied Egypt to secure the Suez Canal. In 1912, when France and Spain carved up Morocco between them. In the Dutch East Indies, in British Mesopotamia, in the Russian conquest of Central Asia and the Caucasus — campaigns that, taken together, placed nearly every major Muslim population on earth under some European flag at some point in the last two centuries.

I find this omission instructive, because omissions in a political narrative are never accidental. They’re weight-bearing and strategic.

There’s a second piece of this history the parliamentarian also leaves out, and it cuts against the premise of his whole argument. The fear being sold is that an essentially a homogeneous Europe is being destabilized by foreign plurality — too many religions, too many cultures, crowded into one place. But the Muslim world he’s pointing at was, for most of its history, the more religiously and ethnically plural of the two civilizations, not the less. Cordoba under Umayyad rule housed Muslims, Christians, and Jews in the same city for centuries, with a body of Jewish philosophy and poetry — Maimonides among them — produced under that arrangement. The Ottoman Empire ran on a millet system that gave Greek Orthodox, Armenian Christian, and Jewish communities their own courts and internal governance for half a millennium. Baghdad’s House of Wisdom drew Muslim, Christian, and Sabian scholars into the same translation projects. None of this was utopia, and none of it was equality in the modern sense — these were hierarchical empires, not liberal democracies, and minorities paid specific taxes and lived under specific constraints. But coexistence, as a working civic fact, was the objective infrastructure in the Islamic world centuries before it existed anywhere in Europe. Europe’s own record over the same stretch runs the other direction: the expulsion of Jews from England in 1290 and from Spain in 1492, the Inquisition, the Thirty Years’ War fought largely over which Christian sect would dominate which territory, pogroms recurring into the twentieth century. The pluralism Europe now frames as a fragile, recent achievement under threat from outside was, for thirteen-odd centuries, more reliably practiced in the civilization it’s accusing of importing intolerance.

Here is what the original omission accomplishes. If the story starts in 2015, the migrant is a stranger who arrived without invitation — a foreign body breaching a boundary that was always there. If the story starts in 1830, the migrant is something else entirely: the grandson of a man conscripted into a French regiment, or the Sikh regiment in the British army, or the granddaughter of a family whose land was redrawn by a pen in London. One of these stories produces fear. The other produces an account that has to be settled. The parliamentarian needs his audience to live inside the first story, because the second one complicates who, exactly, did the invading.

It also does something more useful to the people funding his campaign than to the people voting for him. A man whose wages haven’t moved in fifteen years, whose rent has doubled, whose hospital has a six-month wait for an appointment, is looking for an explanation, and explanations are easier to supply when they have a face, preferably a brown one. The man delivering his package, working his construction site, driving his taxi — he’s visible, he’s foreign, and he cannot fight back in the way a finance ministry or a hedge fund can. He makes a far more satisfying villain than the actual decisions — about taxation, about housing supply, about the dismantling of public services — that produced the squeeze in the first place. This is not a new trick. It is the oldest trick. You take a population’s economic grievance and you deflect it at the people standing next to them in line, instead of upward, at the people who designed the line.

And there’s a second irony buried in here that the loudest critics never mention: many of these immigrants aren’t arriving uninvited at all. Germany’s Gastarbeiter program recruited Turkish labor by the hundreds of thousands starting in 1961 — actively, on purpose, with state contracts. France and Belgium ran similar schemes pulling labor from their former Maghreb and sub-Saharan colonies through the 1960s and ‘70s, precisely because postwar Europe needed bodies to do the work its own population had stopped wanting to do. The grandfather wasn’t smuggled in. He was recruited, on a government letterhead, to rebuild the country that had spent the previous century extracting from his.

This is not solely a European story. The United States runs the same script with different vocabulary. “Invasion” becomes “border crisis.” The Gastarbeiter program has its American analog in the Bracero program, which from 1942 to 1964 imported millions of Mexican laborers under formal U.S. government contract to work farms and rail lines the domestic labor force had stepped away from — recruitment, not infiltration, and recruitment with a paper trail. The phrase “Great Replacement” itself was coined by the French writer Renaud Camus in 2010 and migrated into American political discourse within a few years, cited approvingly by figures across U.S. media and, in its most extreme form, by the men who carried out the Christchurch and El Paso shootings. This isn’t parallel evolution. It’s the same framework, exported.

And underneath both versions sits a number nobody on the podium says out loud. The U.S. Census Bureau’s own projections put the country at “majority-minority” status sometime in the early-to-mid 2030s. Pew Research has tracked the Christian share of the U.S. population fall from roughly nine in ten adults in 1990 to under two-thirds today, with almost all of that decline landing in the religiously unaffiliated — not in Islam, not in any rival faith. Europe’s secularization runs further still. The bait-and-switch is worth exposing: the demographic shift that’s actually underway is a country and a continent getting less Christian and more agnostic, not more Muslim. The threat being marketed and the trend actually occurring aren’t the same trend. “Islamization” is a more useful word than “secularization” for anyone trying to build a coalition out of fear. A “rival” faith - especially one that most people are profoundly ignorant about - can be cast as a foreign enemy in a way that an empty pew can’t.

I need to be exact with the next claim, because it’s the one that tips easiest into something unfalsifiable, and I do love science. I’m not arguing that a room of men decided, in secret, to manufacture this narrative because they did the math. I’m arguing something more mundane and better documented: the math is public. Census projections, voter-file demographics, district-level polling — none of this is hidden, all of it is published, and the political utility of a cultural-threat narrative rises and falls with how close an election sits to the numbers that would change who wins it. You don’t need a conspiracy when the incentive is sitting in plain sight and the people running on fear are, demonstrably, the people for whom the current arrangement is working.

And the history here isn’t only the kind that closed a century ago. Examine the list of countries people are currently fleeing and you are mostly seeing a list of places the West bombed, invaded, sanctioned into collapse, or armed a faction inside of, within living memory. Iraq, dismantled by an invasion launched on a premise — weapons of mass destruction — that turned out not to exist, with a death toll in the hundreds of thousands and an insurgency that metastasized into ISIS. Libya, a functioning state as of 2011, now a fractured territory with rival governments and open slave markets, after a NATO air campaign removed its government and then walked away from the rebuilding. Syria, where a civil war drew in American, Russian, Iranian, Turkish, and Gulf state proxies until the country stopped functioning as a country. Yemen, where a Saudi-led coalition — flying American and British-made aircraft, using American and British-supplied munitions — has spent years bombing a population the United Nations has repeatedly called the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. Gaza, leveled by a military campaign that has killed tens of thousands of civilians, mostly women and children, with weapons shipped from Washington and Berlin. Lebanon, absorbing the spillover from nearly all of the above while running its own collapsed currency and a government that hasn’t functioned in years. The people leaving these places are not migrating toward opportunity. They are fleeing rubble that didn’t fall from the sky on its own.

And then there is Afghanistan, which deserves its own sentence, because the betrayal there wasn’t collateral damage — it was specific and it was promised. Afghan interpreters, fixers, and soldiers who put their bodies between American troops and the Taliban for twenty years were told, explicitly, that visas and resettlement would follow. Many are still waiting, stranded in third countries or hiding in the one they risked everything defending, while the government they fought for collapsed in days the moment the United States walked out, and the Taliban that twenty years and thousands of lives had supposedly been spent defeating walked back into the presidential palace as if the war had been a desert mirage. If you fought on the side America asked you to fight on, for two decades, and your reward was abandonment followed by the return of the regime you risked your life opposing — the word for what’s owed to you is not charity. It’s a sacred debt.

So when the same governments that bombed Fallujah, armed the Libyan intervention, supplied the jets over Sana’a, and shipped the shells, drones and illegal phosphorous munitions into Gaza turn around and ask why so many people from those exact countries are now arriving at their borders, the honest answer isn’t migration. It’s blowback, with a face and a name and a visa application. These are not invaders. They are the remainder left over from decisions made in rooms they were never in.

None of this requires pretending colonial Europe was uniquely evil among empires, or that every demographic anxiety on the continent today is manufactured. People feel what they feel about the pace of change in their neighborhoods, and that feeling is real even when the account of how we got here is incomplete. But an account that begins at the boat and ends at the border, with nothing in between, isn’t a historical analysis. It’s a carefully crafted script. And scripts like this one have a long and specific lineage — the unprovoked horde, the nation under siege from within, the call to defend a homogeneity that never quite existed in the first place, and certainly never existed in the way its current defenders claim. You don’t need to call the man on the clip a fascist to notice that he’s reading from a very old play-book.

What he’s actually defending, whether he knows it or not, isn’t a culture. It’s a ruling class that would much rather he be angry at his neighbor than at his landlord or his bank or a politician.

What’s selective is not the history. It’s which half of it gets remembered.

In medicine, the patient who refuses to look at the labs does not stop the disease — he only loses the time he might have used to treat it. Denial doesn't halt pathology; it just guarantees you meet it later, and sicker. A civilization that won't read its own history is practicing the same denial, on the same timeline, with the same ending. The rubble and the rage aren't separate from the diagnosis. They are the diagnosis.

Language does that. It shapes reality and how we understand it.

I’ve always been fascinated about this aspect of language — the specific words that have been deployed over the past few decades to reroute how tens of millions of Americans understand their own circumstances. Not lies, exactly. Something more like sophistry, and in many ways more insidious than lies. Spells.

Spells work by substituting one frame for another. You stop seeing what is actually in front of you and start seeing the shape the word has prepared for you. And then you act — vote, rage, dismiss, fear — on the basis of the frame rather than the fact.

Let me walk through some of them.

Entitlements

This one is elegant in its cruelty. The word carries the implication of undeserved privilege, of someone demanding what they haven’t earned. You feel it in the syllables. Entitled. The insufferable nephew demanding his inheritance.

But Social Security is not an entitlement in that sense. It is a mandatory savings program that workers pay into their entire working lives. Medicare is insurance premiums deducted from every paycheck before you ever see it. These are not gifts from a benevolent state. They are deferred wages. They are yours.

The strategic genius of the word was to make working people distrust their own stake in programs they funded — to feel vaguely embarrassed about wanting what they already paid for. Once that word took hold, cutting those programs stopped sounding like theft and started sounding like a correction. A restoration of fairness.

Nobody who benefits from a capital gains tax rate lower than what their housekeeper pays in income tax calls that an entitlement. The word is applied with surgical precision — downward only.

Here is the sentence that should end every conversation about entitlements: There is no money for healthcare, education, infrastructure, or childcare. There is always money for everything else, mostly bailouts and war.

When Enron collapsed, there was money. When the mortgage-backed securities market imploded in 2008 and took the savings of millions of Americans with it — savings that were not protected, retirements that evaporated overnight — there was money. Not for the people who lost the houses. For the institutions that designed the instruments that took them. Seven hundred billion dollars, authorized in a weekend. The government that had spent years explaining that raising the minimum wage and universal pre-K was fiscally irresponsible found the money by Monday morning.

There is always money for the war machine. The military budget of the United States exceeds the combined military spending of the next ten countries. Always money for that. Always money, it turns out, for the military needs of other countries too — including, notably, a country that provides its citizens with universal healthcare, highly subsidized university education, paid family leave, and modern public infrastructure. We fund all of that. We just can’t fund it here. There isn’t enough money. You understand.

The word “entitlement” is doing the work of making you feel that what you paid for and what you need is somehow a moral failing. Meanwhile the actual entitlement — the assumption that public money exists to protect private wealth when private wealth makes catastrophic decisions — operates without a name, and therefore without shame, and therefore without end.

They Hate Us For Our Freedom

This phrase was born in the rubble of September 11th, and I understand the impulse — the need to make sense of something that felt senseless. But it hardened almost immediately from a confused first response into a governing doctrine, and what it actually did was foreclose inquiry.

If they hate us for our freedom — for the irreducible goodness of who we are — then there is nothing to examine in our conduct. No foreign policy to interrogate, no military presence to question, no history to reckon with. The attack becomes evidence of the attacker’s pathology alone, and our own behavior recedes from view entirely.

In Chinese medicine we call it an excess pattern when the system responds to a problem by flooding the zone rather than addressing the root. This was that. The phrase inoculated an entire population against the very questions that might have led somewhere useful.

Complexity is the enemy of mobilization. That’s the point.

They’re Taking Your Jobs

Here’s what I know from forty-seven years of moving through the world with working people — on tour buses, in union hall meetings, in martial arts gyms, in waiting rooms: the people most likely to be told that immigrants are taking their jobs are not wrong that something was taken from them. They are demonstrably wrong about the thief.

The same decades in which immigration increased are the decades in which wages stagnated, unions were systematically dismantled, pension funds were raided, and the regulatory framework protecting workers was hollowed out from the inside. These are documented facts. The thief left fingerprints.

But “they’re taking your jobs” gives the injury a face — a foreign face, often a brown face — and redirects the rage downward and outward rather than upward. The person doing it to you stands behind you pointing at someone else while you turn to look.

Islamists / Sharia Law

I want to be careful here because I have skin in this one. I have practiced within a Sufi tradition for more than twenty-five years. I have read Ibn Arabi until the words rearranged something in my understanding. I am of Armenian heritage — a people who know what it means to be the target of religiously and politically justified genocide.

Genuine politicization of Islam is a real thing. Theocratic governance is a real concern. These deserve serious analysis because mixing religion with political power never ends well. What happened instead was that “Islamist” and “Sharia law” were deployed not to produce understanding but to activate a specific kind of dread — to make the 1.8 billion Muslims in the world, and the several million American Muslims who pray and pay taxes and coach Little League, legible as a fifth column.

Here is a simple test I have wanted to administer to every politician or pundit who has deployed the phrase “Sharia law” as a threat: define it. Not in full — just the basics. What does the word sharia actually mean? What are its primary domains? How does it function differently across different legal traditions within Islam?

I already know the answer. They cannot do it. They have never opened a book on Islamic jurisprudence. They could not distinguish fiqh from fatwa from hadith if their careers depended on it — and their careers depend on them never learning the difference.

The Halal cart outside my clinic on 45th Street. The Yemeni bodega owner on my block in Jersey City who has been there for twenty-two years and knows every neighbor by name. The Muslim mayor of the largest city in the country. This is the Sharia takeover they warned us about. This is what keeps them up at night.

Do I feel less American eating hummus and baba ghanoush? Does the presence of a halal cart make me feel like I’m living under theocratic law? Does my daughter’s hijab make her weak chattle to be exploited? The question answers itself — but only if you’ve actually stood at that cart, actually eaten that food, actually looked the man making it in the eye, or spoken with the PhD wearing a hijab.

The spell works by keeping you at a distance from the actual human beings the word is meant to make you fear. It requires that you never close that distance. Every time you do — every meal, every conversation, every training partner, every patient — the spell weakens.

“If Their Healthcare Is So Great, Why Do They Come Here?”

This one had a expiration date. It was plausible, in a limited way, for a specific window of time — roughly the postwar decades through the 1980s, when American medicine genuinely led the world in certain categories of acute intervention and technological innovation. As an argument against universal healthcare systems, it had a narrow factual basis, and that basis has been expiring ever since.

They don’t come here anymore. Not the way the argument implies. The data on this has been moving in one direction for thirty years and the movement has accelerated. The United States spends more per capita on healthcare than any other developed nation — by a significant margin — and ranks near the bottom of peer nations on the outcomes that actually measure a healthcare system: life expectancy, maternal mortality, infant mortality, management of chronic disease, survival rates for conditions caught at various stages.

What has grown instead is the inverse: Americans going elsewhere. Medical tourism out of the United States is now a substantial industry. You can fly to Spain, to Panama, to Thailand, to Colombia, and be treated by surgeons who trained at American institutions, in facilities that meet international accreditation standards, for procedures that would cost you thirty, forty, fifty thousand dollars here — and your total cost including the flight and a recovery week in a decent hotel comes out less than your American copay.

I know this from my own body. I have insurance. I pay a significant monthly premium for it. When a medical emergency required surgery, the bill that came afterward — after the insurance had processed it — was close to twelve thousand dollars. For a person without my income, that is a catastrophic number. That is the kind of number that makes people defer care, avoid hospitals, manage symptoms rather than address causes. And when you defer care in the American system, you eventually present sicker, at higher cost, through an emergency room, which is the most expensive point of entry in the entire system.

The healthcare system of the United States is not a healthcare system. It is a financial product that occasionally produces healthcare as a byproduct. The sentence “why do they come here” was the distraction that kept us from seeing that clearly for fifty years.

Trans Athletes / Children Who Identify as Cats

I group these together because they perform the same function: they take an edge case — or in the second example, something that essentially doesn’t exist as described — and use it to drive policy, anxiety, and voting behavior on a massive scale.

The question of trans athletes in competitive sports is a genuinely complex area of ongoing scientific inquiry. There are real questions about fairness in elite competition that deserve careful, evidence-based discussion. What happened instead was that a vanishingly small number of cases were amplified into an existential crisis, deployed to pass sweeping legislation affecting trans people’s access to healthcare, legal recognition, and public life.

The litter box story — that schools across America were installing litter boxes for students who identified as cats — was fabricated. Completely. And yet it circulated widely enough to appear in school board meetings, congressional testimony, and dinner-table conversations in millions of homes. It was designed not to inform but to produce a specific emotional state: the conviction that the culture has gone insane and your children are in danger.

When you need to manufacture the threat, that tells you something important about the actual threat level.

Climate Hoax

The scientific consensus on anthropogenic climate change is as strong as the consensus on any phenomenon in the natural sciences. This is not a matter of genuine dispute among people doing the actual work.

The phrase “climate hoax” was not generated by competing scientific evidence. It was generated by industries with a financial stake in the continuation of fossil fuel extraction and distribution, transmitted through political actors who received their support, and amplified through media ecosystems built for exactly this purpose.

What it accomplished was to reframe a question of atmospheric chemistry as a question of cultural allegiance. To believe the science became a marker of coastal elite condescension. To dismiss it became a marker of common-sense working-class authenticity. The actual content — what is happening to the ocean temperature, the ice sheets, the growing season, the hurricane frequency — receded entirely. You were no longer evaluating evidence. You were choosing a team.

Your children will live in the world that vote produces.

Fake News

This is the most nihilistic of the lot, because its function is not to argue but to dissolve. Every other spell in this essay tries to substitute one frame for another. “Fake news,” deployed against objectively true, documented reporting, doesn’t substitute a frame. It destroys the idea that frames can be evaluated at all.

If every outlet that contradicts your preferred narrative is fake, then no evidence can reach you. You are epistemically sealed. And a person who cannot be reached by evidence cannot update on what is actually happening to their wages, their water, their rights.

This is the endgame. Not a better story. No story at all. Just noise, from which the only stable signal is the voice of whoever told you the others were fake.

The Common Architecture

What these phrases share is a particular structure: they take something real — a genuine anxiety, a genuine grievance, a genuine complexity — and they route it away from its actual source and toward a designated target or a closed loop of unreachable abstraction.

In Chinese medicine, we have a concept called Shen disturbance — when the mind’s capacity to accurately perceive and respond to reality is disrupted. The Shen needs clear information to make clear decisions. When the channels feeding the Shen are polluted, the whole system goes offline. The person is present, even animated, even passionate. But they are responding to something that isn’t there, or isn’t quite there, or has been kept artificially alive because someone profits from keeping it alive.

I am not being condescending about the people these words reach. I grew up in New England among people who work hard and get very little in return for it and know it and feel it in their bodies. The rage is real. The wound is real. The question is always: who benefits from the wound staying open and facing the wrong direction?

Words are like acupuncture needles. They go in at specific points and move Qi in specific directions. The people who crafted these particular words knew exactly what they were doing and what they wanted to move.

The antidote is not a counter-spell. It is naming — the same thing that works in the clinic. When you can see the pattern for what it is, hold it up to the light and call it by its actual name, something shifts. It becomes real in a different way. It can be addressed, transformed and resolved.

I was a senior intern then, not yet licensed. But you don’t need a license to notice that a man’s own lungs are filing a report his mind refuses to read.

I’ve treated him, on and off, for three years now. His symptoms ease when he comes in — the breathlessness, the muscle weakness, the fog that sits behind the eyes. They ease, and then they come back. He works out again. He does not compete, and I don’t think he will. Somewhere in those three years the vaccine became available to him, and he declined it, because he believed it was killing people, or tracking them, or both. I won’t tell you the shot would have saved him; I’m a clinician, and a clinician who tells you he knows the counterfactual is selling something. But I wonder. I wonder whether a man who’d taken the illness seriously — tested early, rested, sought care instead of contempt — might be racing today instead of resting on my table. I get to wonder. He got to be certain. That was always the difference between us.

A different person, around that same time, asked me why I still bothered with a mask. I told her it wasn’t for me. It was for whoever I might be standing next to — the woman on chemo, the man with the transplant, the grandfather whose immune system couldn’t do what mine could. She waved it off. “My immune system is strong,” she said, as though that settled it. As though the point of the mask had ever been her.

There are two different things people mean when they say they don’t trust the experts, and it is worth keeping them apart. One is a grievance, and it’s partly earned: the guidance shifted, some of it was oversold, schools stayed shut past the point the evidence justified, and half-truths told for our own good curdled into distrust, the way half-truths always do. That’s a real wound, and honest people carry it. But the second thing is not distrust of authority at all. It is the quiet coronation of oneself as the authority. The woman with the strong immune system wasn’t skeptical of the institutions. She had appointed herself one.

And that is the part I’ve watched up close, in people I love. Musicians. Fighters. Men and women who have not opened a science textbook since they pulled a B in tenth-grade biology, who spent the pandemic quite sure they held information the entire global health apparatus had somehow missed. Not a reasoned objection — I would have welcomed a reasoned objection — but a costume. Expertise worn like a borrowed jacket.

I know something about the hours a real thing costs, because I’ve spent them in two rooms. I’ve played trumpet for a living for forty years. Listening to Wynton Marsalis does not make you a trumpet player; it makes you someone who has heard what he cannot yet do. I’ve trained in martial arts most of my life. Playing the UFC video game does not make you a fighter. Being a fighter is what’s left after you’ve been hit, and hit again, and stayed. There is no search bar for that. There is no shortcut through the body.

I’ll go a step further, because it costs me something to say it. I practice a medicine the biomedical mainstream often waves off with the very suspicion I’m describing here. I know exactly what it feels like to be the man who spent decades earning something only to have it dismissed by someone who skimmed a paragraph. That is precisely why I can tell the difference between a reasoned challenge and a costume. One I respect. The other I’ve stopped arguing with.

There is a name for what I was watching. The psychologists call it the Dunning-Kruger effect: the less a man knows, the less equipped he is to grasp how little he knows. Incompetence is the one condition that numbs you to its own symptoms — it takes a certain amount of knowledge even to locate the edges of your ignorance. That part is not new; Laozi called the pretense of knowing a sickness twenty-five centuries ago. What is new is that we built a machine to mass-produce it. The search bar hands you the sensation of knowing without the years that give knowing its weight, and the feed rewards whoever is loudest and least troubled by doubt. Dunning-Kruger was always among us. We put it on steroids and handed it a microphone.

Here is what the virus never once considered: your politics. It did not check your registration before it entered a cell. The countries that fared best did not out-argue it — they out-prepared it. South Korea and Singapore tested, traced, and moved fast, and buried fewer of their people for it. Sweden, which bet early on letting the thing run toward herd immunity, buried far more than Norway, Finland, and Denmark next door — same latitude, same winter, different choices. The outcome was never fate. It was response.

Which is where America did something strange. We took a virus — which has no ideology, no party, no opinion on the Second Amendment — and we made it a flag. The scientific method is the least political instrument human beings have ever built; its entire purpose is to be indifferent to what we wish were true. And we managed to drape it in red, white and blue anyway. We turned one physician into a totem — a saint to half the country, a devil to the other half — as if a single man appropriates the budgets, staffs the hospitals, and stamps out the masks. This week he sat before a Senate committee and, on his lawyers’ advice, said almost nothing, pleading the Fifth while the room performed its outrage. I have seen no evidence of the grand conspiracy. What I see is a distraction — a face to hate so that we don’t have to look in the mirror, or at our savings account, healthcare cost, or aging infrastructure.

Because the mirror is unflattering. Six years on, we still depend on other countries for the masks, the gowns, the raw ingredients of our own medicines. We are no closer to being able to protect ourselves than we were the week it began. We never learned the thing that actually killed people, which was not Anthony Fauci. It was our unwillingness to prepare, and our talent for hating each other instead. The next one is coming. If it is stronger, or moves faster, God help us — because we’ve spent the intervening years perfecting the argument instead of the readiness.

And the proof is already arriving, on schedule. Measles — a disease this country eliminated in the year 2000, beaten flat by a vaccine that works — is having its worst year since 1991, and this fall some international body will likely rule that we’ve handed back the achievement a generation of public health earned. Whooping cough came roaring back to its highest numbers in over a decade, and it kills infants — who cannot mask, cannot distance, and had no vote in what their parents chose to believe. Polio is testing the door. These aren’t new enemies. They’re old enemies we’d already beaten, walking back in through a gate we propped open ourselves. But hey — at least we owned the libs.

My daughter graduated from nursing school and, a month later, walked into a COVID ICU. She stayed six months. She’d come home and strip her scrubs off on the porch, seal them in a bag, and disappear into her room; we left her meals at the door. She has never told me most of what she saw in there. She told me one thing. She said she held up an iPad, over and over, so that families could say goodbye to people they were not allowed to touch.

She saw it up close and could not look away. My patient saw it in his own chest and looked away anyway. And I stand somewhere between them — in the treatment room, and at my daughter’s door — holding a thing I try not to show, because showing it has never once changed a mind, and swallowing it is its own long illness. A strong immune response, it turns out, is not always the thing that saves you. Sometimes it is the body turning its full force on itself, certain to the very end that it is winning. Yeah, there’s that winning part again. Sound familiar?

The same is true of Master Jeffrey Yuen, one of the most significant living inheritors of the Jade Purity lineage of classical Chinese medicine. I keep thinking about this distinction. About what it means, and what we lose when we stop understanding it.

I grew up in New Hampshire with a code that was never stated because it didn’t need to be. You did the work. You did it as soon as it needed doing, to the best of your ability, and you stepped back. The work spoke. You didn’t. This wasn’t false modesty — false modesty is its own kind of performance. It was something closer to a spiritual position: that quality, over time and in the presence of people qualified to recognize it, would find its own level. That the right witnesses would appear.

I spent forty years inside that belief. Six hundred-plus recordings you’ve never seen my name on unless you look at the small print credits. Broadway shows where my job was to be invisible and perfect. A clinic built on referrals and results, one patient at a time. Martial arts training in rooms where rank was something you felt when someone touched you, not something announced on a website. The New England ethic held. The work spoke. And I am here to tell you — with the hard-earned honesty that costs something to say out loud — that the code was also expensive. Discretion, humility, and privacy, not desiring the lime-light are virtues that the current world has no mechanism to reward.

I want to be transparent here. I am aware of the sour grapes reading of everything I’m about to say. The older musician, the pre-social-media practitioner, the guy who played by one set of rules and now the rules have changed and so he calls the new rules corrupt. I’ve reflected on that possibility. I don’t think that’s what this is. But I still hold it honestly, because I’ve seen enough people mistake their own limitations for moral positions to take that posibility seriously.

Here is what I actually think is happening. And it is not the same thing as sour grapes.

Self-promotion is a tool. You pick it up, you use it for what it’s for, you put it down. A publicist sends a press release. A musician posts a tour date. A clinician lists their training. The work remains the center of gravity, and the self-promotion orbits around it. This is legitimate. I do this. Anyone who tells you they don’t is lying.

What I watch now is categorically different. The self becomes the content. Not the record — the making of the record. Not the training — the narration of the training. The meal is not necessarily posted because it is remarkable. It is posted to feed the algorithm, to signal continued existence, to trigger the small neurological reward of engagement that the platform was specifically engineered to produce. B.F. Skinner mapped this out with pigeons in 1957. Variable reward schedules — unpredictable intermittent reinforcement — produce the most compulsive and persistent behavior of any conditioning paradigm. Silicon Valley didn’t invent this. They just industrialized it and dressed it in the language of connection and community.

The musicians and teachers I have most admired across my life — irrespective of genre, irrespective of tradition — did not seem to experience visibility as a mission. Miles Davis was not trying to stay relevant on the timeline. The fighters who carried the deepest knowledge in my martial arts lineage were not monetizing their practice on YouTube. The clinicians whose thinking shaped my own were not building personal brands. They were consumed by the work itself. The work and the process was the consuming thing. That quality of absorption is not compatible with the 24/7 dopamine loop. They are, at a neurological level, in direct competition.

People tell me: if Miles were alive today, he’d be on Instagram. Maybe. I genuinely don’t know. What I suspect is that he might have hired someone to manage it, the way he hired someone to manage other logistical realities — because the music was where he actually lived, and nothing was going to colonize that space. The question of whether the greatest artists would have used social media is less interesting to me than this one: would the social media version of them have produced Bitches Brew or A Love Supreme? I don’t know how to answer that. I’m not sure anyone does.

But here is where I want to go that most of this conversation doesn’t. Because the dopamine loop and the erosion of craft are real. And yet they are not the deepest problem.

The deepest problem is what we gave away, and who we gave it away to.

We did not lose our privacy. We surrendered it. Freely, incrementally, in exchange for something that felt like belonging and recognition and connection. We posted our meals and our workouts and our opinions and our grief and our children and our politics and our location and our desires, and we did it because it felt good, and because everyone else was doing it, and because the platforms were designed — at the level of the interface, the notification, the infinite scroll — to make stopping feel like deprivation.

And while we were doing that, we were building something. Not just a personal archive of moments. An infrastructure. A surveillance apparatus of extraordinary granularity and reach, and we handed it the keys ourselves. We trained ourselves to find visibility normal. We habituated an entire civilization to the idea that the interior life is content to be managed and distributed, that the private self is a liability rather than a resource, that whatever hasn’t been witnessed hasn’t quite happened.

I treat patients in my clinic who cannot tolerate silence or stillness. They reach for their phones the moment a space opens in a conversation, not because they are expecting anything in particular, but because the unwitnessed moment produces something that feels, at a somatic level, like anxiety. We have medicated an entire culture into needing external validation the way we once needed food. And the surveillance state — which is not coming, but is already here, already operating, already integrated into every device in your pocket — did not have to fight for this access. We opened the door ourselves and waved it in.

In the Sufi tradition that informs much of my own thinking, there is a concept — batin — the hidden, the interior, the concealed. It is paired with zahir, the manifest, the outward. The tradition is clear that these are not in opposition; the manifest world is the face of the hidden one. But it is equally clear that the interior has a specific quality that exposure does not merely reveal — it alters. What is protected stays potent. What is perpetually broadcast changes in the broadcasting. This is not mysticism for its own sake. It is an observation about the phenomenology of attention, of the self, of what happens to the interior life when we train ourselves to narrate it in real time.

The hidden teachers understood this. The difficulty of reaching them was not bureaucratic. It was protective — of the transmission, of the student’s capacity to receive it, of the quality of attention that genuine learning requires. When you had to search for the teacher, the search itself prepared you. You arrived differently than you would have arrived had you simply clicked a link.

When everything is equally accessible, nothing requires the quality of attention that transforms the person seeking it. This is not nostalgia. It is a description of a mechanism.

I don’t think there is a going back. I want to be honest about that too. The infrastructure exists. The habits are formed. The next generation has no reference point for a self that wasn’t partially constructed in public. The deal is done. What I am saying is not: return to 1987. What I am saying is: know what you traded, and for what, and whether you’d make the same trade again if you read the small print and understood the terms.

Because I think most of us — if we are honest about it — would say that we didn’t quite read the small print in the contract. We thought we were sharing moments. We didn’t entirely understand that we were also building a cage, and furnishing it ourselves, and then gradually coming to experience the cage as home.

The New Hampshire code I was raised with assumed something that the current world has systematically dismantled: that there is a self that does not require an audience to be real. That the unwitnessed hour of practice counts. That the patient who left your clinic healthier and never posted about it was healed nonetheless. That the thing you keep private — the interior room, the batin — is not absence but source.

I still believe that. It costs me something professionally. I believe it anyway.

And I wonder, sometimes, what we will make of all this in twenty years — when the surveillance is complete and the feed is total and there is no longer a single corner of ordinary life that hasn’t been lit up, documented, and distributed. I wonder if we will remember what it felt like to keep something. To know something about ourselves that the world didn’t know. To carry an interior that was genuinely ours.

I think we will. I think we will miss it in our bodies, the way you miss a thing you can’t quite name because you gave it up before you knew what it was worth.

In the pit and backstage, my non-musician company was the Local 1 stagehands. Musicians and stagehands don’t usually mix — the stagehands tend to regard us with a scorn I never fully understood. My working theory was that some of them hadn’t been good enough for the high school band, or that their girlfriend had once found the drummer more interesting than they were. Those are the kind of wounds a man carries for life.

But I had a side hustle back then teaching martial arts — Boxing, Muay Thai, Kali — and on matinee days I’d schedule sessions between shows, so I usually had my gear with me. For reasons best explained by so-called alpha-male psychology, this bought me a strange credibility with the Local 1 guys. I wasn’t just some pussy musician. I was a guy who hit things and got hit. That, it turned out, was a passport.

So we were cordial. And being cordial, I learned fast that we lived on opposite ends of the political map.

One afternoon between shows our talk turned to Homeland Security, the TSA, the whole apparatus being assembled in real time around us. I said what I believed then and believe now — that most of it was pretext, that fear was being used to pry open doors to our privacy that would never close again.

One of my stagehand friends gave me the line. You know the line. Everyone knows the line.

“If you’re not doing anything wrong, you’ve got nothing to hide.”

I asked him if he’d ever read the Fourth Amendment.

What surprised me then — and still surprises me twenty-five years later — is how fast the people who love to talk the loudest about the Constitution will flush it the moment they get scared. The same men who’ll tell you the Founders were geniuses, who quote the Second Amendment chapter and verse, who wear their rugged individualism like a leather jacket — those same men, frightened, will hand you their liberty across the bar and thank you for taking it. They’d never say it that way. They’d never admit that’s what they were doing. But that’s what it was.

I’m not picking on my Local 1 friends. I loved those guys. Salt of the earth, most of them. But I’m pointing at something I’ve watched play out in too many places, over too many decades, to keep calling it a coincidence. When a pattern repeats that reliably, it isn’t a bug. It’s a feature.

Here’s the thing about the tough-guy archetype — the rugged individualist, the don’t-tread-on-me American. Often it’s a costume. Underneath the Captain America suit is a man afraid of nearly everything he doesn’t recognize: the guy in the wrong hat, the wrong skin, the wrong prayer, the wrong language on the subway. The swagger isn’t the opposite of the fear. The swagger is what the fear wears in public.

And fear, dressed up like that, always needs a border. It needs a club with a door and a bouncer. It needs the category of “real Americans” — which is never actually about a passport or a birth certificate or an oath. It’s about resemblance. The real American turns out to be whoever looks and sounds and prays like the person doing the deciding. Nobody writes the membership rules down, because the moment you wrote them down you’d see them for what they are.

In the autumn of 2001, most people were genuinely, reasonably afraid. That fear was real and I won’t mock it. But fear is the most useful raw material a state ever gets handed, and this batch was not wasted. What got built on top of it — the watchlists, the warrantless collection, the normalization of the search — we are still living inside. We took the ceiling off surveillance and never put it back.

And almost nobody was allowed to ask the one question that mattered: why? Why us. The answer came down complete and sealed — they hate us for our freedom — and most people took it the way you take communion, without chewing.

But here is what you find the moment you stop reading only the sports section of the NY Post: nearly every attack on this country, at home or at an embassy abroad, has been a response to something we did first. Not a justification — a cause. Those are different words, and grown-ups can hold both at once. The CIA has a term for it. They call it blowback, and they didn’t coin it in protest; they coined it as tradecraft, because they understood that consequences travel. Iran in ‘53. The fighters we armed in Afghanistan and later met again under a different name. The bases, the sanctions, the propped-up kings, the kill lists. You can find all of it in the public record, written down by the people who did it. It isn’t hidden. It just isn’t in the section most people read.

When I had that conversation in the pit, the shoe was on a particular foot. The suspicion pointed at men who looked like me — the beard, the hat, the wrong vowels in a surname. Shoes off, step aside, answer the questions. Humiliating and wrong, and still, in hindsight, the friendly version.

I’ve watched the machine mature. This past year the pretext got a name: a presidential memo on domestic terrorism and organized political violence whose working definition of extremism reportedly stretches to cover anti-capitalism and the wrong opinions on race, migration, and gender — roomy enough to hold whoever happens to be inconvenient this week. And consider who holds the levers. The sprawling security state that 9/11 built is now run by a man whose résumé is a plumbing empire and a short stint as a paid cage fighter. Building that company from nothing is a real American success story — but not one hour of it was spent in intelligence, in law enforcement, in anything resembling his new job. Beside him stands a senior White House adviser who has never in his life won an election, announcing that he is hunting a fifth column.

I keep coming back to their temperament, because temperament is important when you hand a man that much power. When the plumber-turned-Secretary was still a senator and a labor union leader bested him with facts in a hearing, his answer was to take off his wedding ring — he admitted afterward he was thinking he’d break his hand on the man’s face — and challenge him to a fist fight on the Senate floor, until the committee chairman had to stop the proceedings and remind him he was a United States senator. The adviser’s version is the televised tirade, the shouted diatribe the moment he meets informed, rational pushback. I’ve spent forty-seven years in real fighting arenas, and I can tell you with some authority: a man who reaches for his fists or his loud voice the instant he’s out-argued is not showing you strength. He is showing you the very thing the swagger was built to hide.

And here’s the part that should stop you cold, because it’s the pit conversation come to term. That same adviser has explained that one hallmark of the people he’s hunting is their pretextual and disingenuous appeal to civil liberties. Read it twice. The appeal to your rights is now offered as evidence against you. In this telling the Fourth Amendment isn’t a shield — it’s the disguise. My stagehand’s line got promoted: from a bar-stool opinion to the operating logic of a federal apparatus. And it no longer stops at taking your shoes off at the airport.

That, in the end, is the thing I keep circling back to. Not the surveillance itself — the surrender. How readily a free people will swallow an official story whole, hook and line and sinker, and never once turn it over to ask the two questions any curious child asks: Is it true? Is that the whole story?

“If you’ve got nothing to hide, you’ve got nothing to fear.”

I’ve reflected on that line for twenty-five years, and I’ve come to believe it’s exactly backwards. The one with nothing to hide is not the citizen. It’s the state that wants to watch him. The party that owes us transparency is the one looking down, not the one looking up.

My friend and I never settled it. We had a show to play. We picked up our instruments, or our wrenches, and went back to work on opposite sides of a question the country still hasn’t answered — except the country is answering it now, and not in the direction I’d hoped.

I never did find out whether he read the Fourth Amendment.

I hope he did. I hope he’s reading it now.

On the morning of March 13th, ICE agents arrived at his house in Richardson while he was getting the kids ready for school. His wife told them he needed his inhaler. She tried to hand it to them. They didn’t take it. Less than twenty-four hours later he was dead. The death certificate says anaphylaxis, an “unidentified substance,” a toxicology finding his own family’s second autopsy couldn’t even confirm because there wasn’t enough blood left to test. “What’s happening here smacks of a cover-up,” a U.S. Senator said, when ICE refused to release the autopsy. A member of Congress from Texas has spent months asking the same basic questions and getting nothing back. Out of more than fifty deaths in ICE custody this term, his is the first one anybody has bothered to rule an accident.

I want to be very clear about what enrages me here, because it isn’t the thing people will assume.

It isn’t Trump.

Presidents are temporary. I’ve watched a lot of them come and go and the country absorbed every one of them, including the ones I couldn’t stand. The man is not the problem. The man is the occasion. What has been built underneath him is a machine that will outlast him, and once you say out loud what that machine is actually for; the red, white, and blue mirage fades quickly to black.

The men who built it were writing it down years before Trump came back to power. Stephen Miller set the number — three thousand arrests a day, which he called a floor, not a ceiling — and when field office heads pushed back that they were supposed to be going after criminals, the reported answer was: Why aren't you at Home Depot? Why aren't you at 7-Eleven? Russell Vought spent a decade arguing, in print and in the Project 2025 policy blueprint published before the election, that the executive should simply not be bound by the constraints Congress and the courts imagine apply to it — and then he took the budget office and started implementing it. Trump is the occasion. They are the blueprint. Blueprints don't leave office when their patron does; they get picked up by whoever comes next, and the next man will not have to build anything. It’s all in place.

ICE is not a public safety agency that lost its way. It is a fear-production system, and it is operating exactly as designed. Fear is the product. The mask is not incidental to the work — the mask is the work. So is the unmarked van. So is the arrest at the courthouse door, of a man who showed up at that courthouse because the law told him to.

Of everyone booked into ICE custody this fiscal year, roughly three out of four had no criminal conviction of any kind. Five percent — five — had a violent conviction. That is the “worst of the worst.” That number is not a computation error and it is not an implementation failure. It is the design. Hunting genuinely dangerous people is slow. It takes warrants, detectives, informants, evidence, months of patient work, and it does not scale to a three-thousand-arrest-a-day quota. But you know what does scale? The Home Depot parking lot. The courthouse hallway. The school drop-off line. The scheduled check-in appointment, where the person has already told you exactly where he’ll be standing and at what time, because he is trying to obey the law.

You go where the compliant people are, because the compliant people are the easiest to take, and every one of them counts the same on the board. Fear is cheap to manufacture. Safety is expensive. Somebody chose.

And fear is a product, which means somebody is buying.

I know the buyer. Suspicious of people who don’t look like him? Perhaps. Easily conned into conspiracies? Perhaps. Not able to logically defend any of the beliefs he holds with absolute certainty? Perhaps. But he isn’t a monster, and it costs me nothing to say so. He’s a man who watched the plant close and the town hollow out while nobody in Washington so much as flinched, and he has spent most of his adult life waiting for someone — anyone — to be held to account for it. Nobody ever was. So when an orange man on television finally says out loud that yes, you were robbed, and here is the one who robbed you, and it’s the guy waiting outside the Home Depot for a day labor job — that isn’t a policy argument. That’s relief. It is the first time anybody with power has confirmed that his life was not supposed to go this way.

I understand the relief. I don’t excuse what he does with it. Because underneath it is the oldest sleight of hand there is: someone hands you a person weaker than you and calls it justice, and in exchange you agree not to look up, or at what is being done. What it is is a clever placebo. It has never once ended with the man who took the deal getting his job back.

And despite the wreckage we see on the news every day there are still many cheering for it. Innocent people gunned down in the street, others in detention centers, children separated from their parents. All of this being sold as law and order. Protection from the invading hordes.

I’m not anti-cop. I don’t believe in open borders. I believe a nation should get to decide who crosses into it and how, and I have no patience for pretending otherwise. What I can’t stomach is watching the Constitution get treated as an inconvenience by an agency that answers to no one — an agency with an operating budget larger than most of the world’s militaries, staffed in part by people carrying affiliations that, before this administration, would have gotten them flagged as domestic threats rather than handed a badge. That’s not law enforcement. That’s a paramilitary force performing an invasion of the country it’s supposedly protecting, and it is currently unaccountable to the document that is supposed to govern all of us, including ICE.

MacArthur said that decades ago, worried about a different enemy entirely. He’d recognize the shape of this one.

I grew up on his stories — the pride in his voice when he talked about the German garrison his unit commandeered, and something quieter when he talked about how they treated the prisoners they took afterward. “We would want our soldiers treated that way,” he told me. “We have rules of war to keep us from becoming inhumane. It’s easy to become inhumane in war.” He wasn’t a sentimental man. But he understood that the line between a soldier and a war criminal is the line you don’t cross even when nobody’s watching, even when the enemy wouldn’t extend you the same courtesy.

He wasn’t the first to understand it, and the lineage runs through more than one tradition. Eight hundred years earlier, Saladin retook Jerusalem after nearly a century of Crusader rule, with every reason and every opportunity for the kind of slaughter that had been done to Muslims and Jews when the city fell the other way in 1099. His own chroniclers recorded what he did instead: he freed the elderly and the poor who couldn’t pay their ransom, over the objections of commanders who wanted otherwise. Different faith, different century, same discipline my uncle was describing — the discipline of a man with total power over a captive population choosing not to use all of it.

Sadly, we have far less noble men in charge, and I use the term “men” loosely.

Roughly seven out of every ten people sitting in ICE detention right now have no criminal conviction of any kind — not a pending charge, not a record, nothing. American citizens among them. And this is the part I cannot get past: citizens who have been identified as citizens, whose documents have been produced, whose families have shown up at the door with the paperwork in hand — and who get processed into a detention center anyway. Once the machine has you, being right doesn’t get you out. It only makes you a filing problem.

The elderly. The chronically ill, whose conditions were being managed on the outside and are not being managed now. A nun. A Haitian asylum seeker died of a dental infection inside a facility whose own press office says detainees receive the best healthcare of their lives. A dental infection. In 2026. In America.

And the women.

As of the middle of February, ICE was holding eighty-six women it had itself identified as pregnant — nine of them in the third trimester. Sixteen recorded miscarriages in custody. Women shackled at the wrists and ankles while actively miscarrying. One woman bled through the night and was left in a room to bleed alone until the next day, then transported to an emergency room an hour away in restraints, where she needed a transfusion; she was returned to ICE custody afterward and bled for another month before they deported her. Another asked about her missing prenatal vitamins and was told by a nurse that she wouldn’t die without them. Pregnant teenagers — some as young as thirteen, some of them rape survivors — moved into states where they cannot get an abortion even if they want one. One woman found out she was pregnant only after she was already inside. She miscarried about a month later.

I hold a license to practice Chinese medicine, and that license means something specific: if a bleeding pregnant woman came into my clinic and I sat on her for twenty-four hours and told her to drink water, I would lose the license, I would deserve to lose it, and I might well lose my freedom on top of it. Inside an ICE facility that is a Tuesday, and nobody loses anything at all.

That is not a system with a medical care problem. That is what a system looks like when not one person inside it is afraid of a consequence.

It isn’t abstract in my house. My wife is American, Nicaraguan by descent, born here same as I was. My youngest wears a hijab. She’s a young adult navigating the world with Asperger’s, which means this chaotic world already asks more of her than it should, and now she’s old enough to understand what those videos mean and to ask me, quietly, whether it could happen to her, to us. I don’t have a clean answer. That’s new. I’ve spent forty-plus years in multiple arts and sciences that all require clarity. With this I have none other than “stay calm and keep your head on a swivel.” ICE continues to operate in my city as I write this.

I have a friend, I’ve known him for years, we train at the same boxing gym. He’s Mexican and runs a successful construction company in New York. He sponsors the immigration process for the men on his crews and matches their pay toward legal fees, because he believes — believed — that this is still a country where you can build something honest with your hands and eventually call it home. His workforce has stopped showing up. Not because they did anything wrong. Because showing up now carries a risk that has nothing to do with the law and everything to do with who’s currently allowed to ignore it. His business may not survive this. Multiply him by every small employer in this country doing the same thing, and you start to see what this actually costs — not in some abstract civil-liberties sense, but in real jobs, real families, real American communities. The cowards in congress signing off on this madness are likely having dinner at Charlie Palmer Steak a few steps from the capital. Their steak is likely being cooked by an undocumented immigrant.

I’ve spent most of my adult life around people who sometimes have to hurt other people for a living — in a training hall, in a ring, on tour with men who’ve done things I’ll never fully know about. I know what real capability looks like, and I know what performative bullshit looks like, and ICE right now looks like the second thing wearing the mask of the first: agents in unmarked vests, faces covered, untrained, out of shape, moving like an occupying force through American streets, protected by an immunity nobody voted to give them. That combination — power without accountability — is the single most predictable recipe for atrocity in every tradition I’ve studied, martial or spiritual. Not because the people holding the power are necessarily monsters. Because nothing is stopping them from becoming that, and my uncle already told me how easy it is. There’s a cost to all this that doesn’t show up in the domestic coverage, and our country will be paying that cost for decades to come.

I’ve played in sixty-seven countries. Four decades of customs lines, of sliding a blue passport across a counter in cities where I’d do my best to say hello in the local language. That passport was never neutral. People had opinions about my country, plenty of them bad and plenty of them earned, and I heard all of them at bars and dinner tables from Osaka to Barcelona. But underneath the argument there was almost always an assumption, and the assumption was this: America is a place that has rules and principles. You could despise our foreign policy and still believe that if you landed at JFK with a valid visa in your hand, you would be dealt with according to a law that also applied to the man behind the counter.

That assumption is gone. I watched it go. We all did whether we know it or not.

This summer the world came here. The World Cup, played in our cities — the closest thing to a global living room this country will ever get to host. And before their citizens boarded the planes, France, Germany, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Ireland issued travel advisories about coming to the United States. Read that sentence again. Our allies. The countries whose grandfathers came up the same beaches my uncle did. They warned their own people to be careful here. Fans of the E Street band contacted me on social media, asking if it was safe to come. I told them to stay home.

More than a hundred and twenty American civil rights organizations issued an advisory of their own to arriving fans, warning that visitors who are the wrong color or the wrong kind of person may be — their words — most vulnerable to serious harm. Here. During the World Cup. Because ICE is working the airports.

Chinese scholars with valid visas turned back at Seattle. European bookings for July down more than fifteen percent. Foreign arrivals falling in a year when global travel is climbing everywhere else on earth. You can argue about the dollars if that’s what moves you. I’m not talking about the dollars.

Soft power was never a slogan. It was the return on the investment my uncle’s generation made with their lives. They spent their youth establishing, at a price I will never be asked to pay, that America was the country that kept the rules when it didn’t have to — and we have been cashing that check in every corner of the world for eighty years. Saladin is remembered kindly eight centuries later for precisely one reason: he had absolute power over a captive city and declined to use all of it. That is the only way anyone has ever remembered a conqueror kindly. There is no other way.

We are spending down the only reputation that ever made our arguments credible anywhere, and we are spending it on nothing. On theater. On a number on a whiteboard.

Nobody is going to tell that story about us in eight hundred years. They will tell a different one, and they will have the receipts.

A country doesn’t hold together because everyone agrees. It holds together because the people with guns and badges answer to the same law as everyone else. That’s the whole foundation. Break it in the name of security and you haven’t secured anything — you’ve just told every citizen, quietly, that the Constitution is a courtesy extended at someone else’s discretion. My uncle’s generation understood that the line holds especially when it’s hardest to hold it. Right now, in Texas and Minneapolis and everywhere else this is happening, we are failing a test that generations before us passed under far worse conditions than these.

Abolish ICE. Rebuild something that answers to the Constitution instead of standing outside it. And every person who used a badge and a mask to become what my uncle spent a war refusing to become should answer for it — in a courtroom, on the record, by name, and treated better than they treated the people in their custody.

That’s the whole point of having rules. You keep them especially when you could get away with breaking them.

The confusion comes from somewhere else. It comes from a culture that has flattened every act of physical force into a single category — unnecessary brutality — and then, having done so, crowned its most sanitized version, the pay-per-view cage match, as the permissible face of the warrior. The UFC is everywhere. The actual warrior tradition is almost nowhere

On the surface they may seem the same, but they are not. Consider two fighters from the same era, shaped by the same ruleset, but expressing completely different orientations toward what they were doing. Conor McGregor — brilliant, electric, and ultimately hollow — performed dominance. The trash talk, the tailored suits, the I am not here to take part, I am here to take over — it was theater, and theater of a particular kind: the ego staging itself as force. When the wins stopped coming reliably, the theater became increasingly desperate. He had confused the fight with the self, and when the fight turned, so did the self.

Khabib Nurmagomedov stood for something different. Same cage, same rules, same violence — but oriented differently. He fought with what could only be called impersonal terminator-like ferocity. He was not performing. He was executing. After his final fight, he retired — not to build a brand, not to chase a legacy, but because his beloved father and coach had died and he promised his mother he would not continue fighting without his father being by his side. There was something almost classical about it: a warrior who knew what he was defending, fought for it, and then stopped when the reason was gone. He did not love the fight. He accepted it.

That distinction — between the ego that craves the fight and the warrior who accepts it — is everything. And it is a distinction the UFC as an institution does not make, cannot make, because spectacle requires personality and personality is always, at some level, ego. This is not a condemnation of UFC or everyone who competes inside those rules. It is an observation about what the institution selects for, and what it obscures.

The warrior tradition, that institution obscures, is the one I am interested in.

Bruce Lee — drawing, as he often did, from Lao Tzu — said that force exists to restore harmony. Not to dominate. Not to win. To restore. This is a cosmological claim, not a tactical one. It says something about the nature of the universe: that there is an order, that it can be violated, and that correcting that violation sometimes requires physical intervention. The warrior is not the aggressor. The warrior is the one who recognizes when the natural order has been disturbed — and acts. The Sufi tradition has a similar notion that reality is created with balance, and admonishes to not destroy that balance.

Every martial tradition I have trained in has taught me something about this. Not identically — that is the point. Each art is its own epistemology, its own way of knowing the world through the body.

Boxing taught me to be defensively responsible. “Smart feet, smart fighter” — that’s the instruction you hear in every good gym. On the surface it is tactical advice. But sit with it long enough and it becomes something else: a principle for moving through the world. Know where the danger is coming from. Don’t stand in front of what can hurt you. Position matters. Preparation matters. The fighter who is always getting hit is not brave — they are careless, and carelessness is its own form of selfishness, because in life, other people pay for it too.

Muay Thai combines economy and brutality in the same breath. The art does not waste motion. It does not perform. It ends things. There is a kind of honesty in that — a refusal of theater that becomes, over time, a way of meeting reality without flinching.

Silat — the Indo/Malay art, layered, older than most of what the West calls martial arts — carries two teachings I have never been able to let go of. The first: “if someone is so enraged that they want to kill you, who is more in need of you?” Think about what that asks! It does not ask you to be afraid or to fight or to run. It asks you to see the person across from you as someone suffering — someone whose rage has become a kind of sickness — and to respond from that seeing. The second is even starker: “if you are meant to die in this moment, a hundred men cannot protect you. If you are not meant to die, a hundred men cannot harm you.” This is not fatalism in the passive sense. It is a liberation from the paralysis of fear. You act rightly because it is right, not because you have calculated your odds of survival.

Grappling teaches the body what the mind resists knowing: that resistance to superior force accelerates your own destruction, and that the path through a bad position is rarely the one your ego insists on. You learn this not by being told but by tapping — again, again and again — until your nervous system accepts what your pride cannot. Not tapping can render one unconscious, or with damaged joints. You also learn that you can always improve your position. No matter how bad a predicament you’re in, whether on the mat or in life, you can always improve your position.

Pekiti Tirsia Kali — the system I have trained in for over three decades under Grand Tuhon Leo Gaje Jr. — is something else entirely. PTK is not a sport. There are no tournaments, no weight classes, no referees. It is a Filipino warrior system built around the survival and protection of family, tribe, and community. What it transmits — and it took me years to understand this — is not technique. It is orientation. It is a way of moving through the world in which you are responsible for the people around you, in which readiness is a form of love.

Every great tradition has a version of this figure. In the Islamic tradition, the concept is futuwwa — spiritual chivalry, the warrior as servant of something larger than himself. The futuwwa ideal did not separate the sword from the spirit. The sword was the spirit, enacted. In the Daoist tradition, the Zhenren — the Realized Person — could heal and could fight. These capacities were not contradictions. They were two expressions of the same clarity, the same rootedness in the Dao.

I am a musician. We spend our lives manifesting beauty. I am also an acupuncturist. I put needles in people for a living. I have years studying how bodies hold trauma, how the nervous system speaks in whispers and sometimes in screams, how the channel systems map the territory between what hurt us and what we become. I have also spent most of my adult life training to be dangerous. If this seems paradoxical to you, I would invite you to sit with that discomfort — because it is telling you something about the assumptions you are carrying.

The artist, the healer and the warrior are not opposites. They are responses to the same fundamental responsibility: to see clearly, and to act from what you see.

Which brings me to now.

The argument for passivity usually goes like this: we live in a complex world, violence begets violence, the spiritually mature person transcends conflict and holds space. There is something profoundly true in this. There is also something dangerously incomplete in it — and something, if we are being honest, self-serving.

Because the argument for passivity is almost always made by people who have enough distance from the harm that they can afford to call it something else. The person on the receiving end does not have the luxury of transcendence. The person whose neighborhood has been stripped of resources, whose body has been made economically disposable, whose children are inheriting a diminished world — that person is not dealing with complexity. They are dealing with a street fight they did not choose.

Passivity in the face of injustice is not neutrality. It is a choice — a choice that benefits the people already winning. And there is a particular cruelty in dressing that choice up as spiritual maturity. As if the person who has insulated themselves sufficiently from consequence has thereby achieved a higher consciousness, rather than simply a safer address.

The fallacy of safety in non-action is this: you believe that by not acting, you are not participating. But the system does not require your active consent. It only requires your silence. Your inaction is not a protected position outside the conflict. It is a vote cast for the status quo — for the slow diminishment of everyone, and eventually you.

The Prophet Muhammad, ﷺ said: “If you see a wrong, fix it with your hand. If you are unable, fix it with your word. If you are unable, feel it as wrong in your heart — but know that this is the weakest of faith.”

I have been sitting with this hadith for a long time. What strikes me most is not the permission it grants — it is the hierarchy it establishes. Heart-feeling is real. It is not an illusion. But it is explicitly named as the weakest position. The tradition is not comfortable with pure interiority as a destination. It does not let you off the hook by feeling bad about things. Feeling bad about injustice while doing nothing about it is not, in this framework, a spiritual achievement. It is a failure of faith — specifically, the weakest version of it that still qualifies.

The warrior who sees clearly — and this is the whole work, the lifetime of training, the reason you show up to the mat when you do not want to — the warrior who sees clearly is not free to look away. Clarity creates obligation.

None of this is an argument for recklessness. Force used without wisdom creates new disorder. Pete Hegseth is the poster child of this ego driven recklessness. And this is exactly Lao Tzu’s point. The goal is restoration, not revenge. Grand Tuhon taught me this by repetition: the blade moves to end the conflict, not to extend it. In and out. Clean. Finished. The fighter who loves the fight has already lost something essential. To be clear, the “fight” I’m talking about isn’t a combat sports competition with a rule set and a referee.

All of that said, discernment without action is its own corruption. The person who sees the cage and calls it complexity, who has refined their analysis to a high polish while others take the hits — that person has also lost something essential.

The warrior tradition across its genuine expressions does not produce people who are eager to fight. It produces people who are capable and willing to. There is an enormous difference. Willingness comes from clarity about what is worth defending. Eagerness comes from ego. The ego wants the fight. The warrior accepts it.

Khabib understood this. McGregor, for all his gifts, did not — or not consistently enough to build anything lasting on it. The cage revealed both of them. Martial traditions do the same.

The fights I am describing are not always — or even usually — physical. They are legal, political, communal, creative. At their core they are the fight to tell the truth in a climate that punishes it, to build something real against the grain of a system that profits from your compliance, to show up for people in the cage whether or not you are standing in it yourself. The form changes. The principle does not.

See clearly. Act from what you see. Know what you are defending. Accept that this will cost you something.

Sometimes fighting back is the spiritual path. Not in spite of the tradition. But because of it.

That’s the part of us the world has never stopped loving — a sound built largely by Black people’s genius, sold back to the world as “American,” and beloved everywhere I’ve ever unpacked my trumpet case. Everything else, they’ve grown a lot more clear-eyed about, and thus a lot angrier about, and I don’t blame them! I’m just as angry.

I grew up on the red, white and blue kool aid. Hampton, New Hampshire. Winnacunnet class of 1980, the whole civic liturgy — freedom, liberty, opportunity, a nation that helped the poor, stood up for the weak, hated bullies. I still love those ideals. I’m not being ironic when I say that. But loving the ideals and mistaking them for the finished product are two different things, and this year, on this particular Fourth, I can’t do the second one anymore.

Here’s the thing about the kool aid: some people never got to drink it in the first place. First Nation communities didn’t need 2026 to tell them the ingredients didn’t match the sales pitch — they were handed hundreds of broken treaties, stolen land, and destroyed culture before the ink on the founding documents was dry, and every subsequent decade has just been variations on the same betrayal, dressed up differently each time. Black Americans didn’t need it either, nor did anyone who arrived here recently from a country our own military had a hand in destabilizing, then got told their homeland was “a shithole” — as if the bombs and rubble wasn’t partly ours to begin with. These aren’t fringe grievances. They’re the oldest, most consistent testimony this country has produced, and for most of my life I watched us treat that testimony as a footnote instead of the main text, and that’s if anyone even bothered to read the testimony in the first place.

What’s different now isn’t that the gap between myth and reality exists — it always has. What’s different is the reaction to anyone pointing at it. We’ve entered a phase where naming the gap gets you called ungrateful, lazy, un-American. “Love it or leave it.” And now that sentiment has legislative teeth — DeSantis’s Florida is the loudest example, but hardly the only one — banning books, whitewashing the history that makes people uncomfortable, treating certain speech itself as the threat rather than the conditions the speech describes. You don’t heal a wound by making it illegal to mention. You just let it fester somewhere you can’t see it, and it comes back later as something worse.

Meanwhile we’re told the stock market is healthy and doing great, so everything must be fine — as if a stock index were a measure of a nation’s soul rather than its liquidity. I’ve spent years with my hands on people’s bodies in my Chinese medicine clinic. Nobody’s nervous system calms down because the S&P had a good quarter.

Here’s my real confession, though, and it’s much more bitter tasting than the political one: we used to be the people who helped the poor, stood up for the weak, and hated bullies. I believed that about us because for stretches of our history it was substantially true, or true enough that the effort counted for something. Somewhere along the way, enough of us stopped being those people and started being the other thing — the bully, the hoarder, the mocker, the one who mistakes cruelty for strength. Not because we were conned in one dramatic moment, but because fear is a tactic and it is patient. It was sold to us in small, digestible doses, election after election, until it became a habit that is easily manipulated. And I include myself in the “we.” Nobody gets to stand fully outside the culture that made them, no matter how clearly they can see it.

So on a day built for celebration, I find I’m doing something closer to mourning. Not for the ideals — I haven’t let go of those, and I won’t. I’m mourning the distance between what we said we were and what enough of us have chosen to become, and I’m mourning it honestly rather than performing outrage about it, because outrage is easy and this feels more like grief.

I’ll spend the day with my wife and my daughters. That’s not a retreat from the country — it’s the only place I still recognize the better angels operating without interruption. Maybe that’s the whole of what’s left for me to trust and believe in: not the flag, not the market, not the myth, but my own living room, and the people in it. In the end, that’s enough and it truly is all that matters.
The Lakota holy man, Black Elk may have said it best “Peace begins in the individual soul recognizing its oneness with the universe, then radiated outward.”

So with those wise, aspirational words I wish you all a Happy Fourth. I mean that, even now. Maybe especially now.

I’ve been thinking about a patient I’ll call simply a person navigating too much at once. High-functioning professional. Parent. Spouse. Someone who by every external measure has built a very successful life — and built it through genuine effort, genuine skill, and genuine care for other people. Not a cautionary tale about ambition. Just a person who has been carrying a lot for a long time, and whose body finally said: enough.

When I asked how work was going, the answer surprised me. Fine, actually. Good, even. The work is meaningful. Helping people through difficult transitions — the kind that arrive at the end of a life, or the beginning of grief. There’s real satisfaction in that. I believed it.

So it wasn’t the work itself. It was the accumulation.

There’s a tendency — and I see it in my clinic, I see it in myself, I’ve seen it on stages and in recording studios and in so many of my colleagues — to sit in front of the painting of your own life and just keep adding paint. Another credential. Another commitment. Another layer of identity that has to be maintained, projected, defended. Each brushstroke made in good faith. Each one an expression of something real. And then at some point you step back and realize the canvas is so covered, so dense with accumulated life, that you can’t see the original surface anymore. You’ve forgotten there ever was one.

The Daoist tradition has a concept for the original surface. Pu 朴 - the uncarved block. The material before the sculptor’s intention has been imposed on it. Not raw in a crude sense. Complete in a prior sense. Laozi isn’t nostalgic about it — he’s pointing at something that never actually left, something that persists underneath all the carving, available at any moment to anyone willing to stop and look.

Islam has its own name for it: fitra — the primordial nature, the innate human disposition toward truth, beauty and the divine that every person carries from birth. The Prophet said, “Every child is born on fitra.” Ibn Arabi, whose metaphysics I keep returning to, presses deeper: fitra isn’t merely a starting condition. It’s an ontological ground that never disappears. It is covered. Obscured by the accumulations of conditioning, of nafs — the layers of ego-self that develop as strategies for navigating a difficult world. But covered is not the same as lost. The surface is still there, underneath everything.

The Tibetan Buddhist tradition points at something structurally identical: rigpa, the natural state of mind — luminous, already awake — always present beneath the obscurations of conditioned thought. The Sanskrit tradition calls the innate nature svabhāva. The Kabbalists speak of the neshamah, the breath-soul at the innermost core of the person, the layer that cannot be polluted because it was never fully of this world. Plato’s anamnesis — the soul’s recollection of what it always already knew — belongs to the same family of ideas. Across traditions that share nothing linguistically, historically, or geographically, something keeps getting noticed: that the original nature is not fabricated, cannot be fabricated, and therefore cannot be destroyed. It can only be forgotten. And forgetting is a temporary condition.

But I think there’s something even quieter than the uncarved block. And I couldn’t find it in any text — it arrived obliquely, in the middle of thinking about this patient.

It’s not the block waiting to be carved. It’s a blank canvas. With nothing painted on it. And the instruction isn’t imagine what you might create. The instruction is: sit with it. Just that. Don’t even imagine. Just sit with it.

Most of us can’t do it. The high-achiever’s mind — and I include my own — immediately begins planning what will go on the canvas next. The blank space triggers something close to panic in a nervous system that has organized itself entirely around production, excellence and maintaining that excellence at all costs. Stillness reads as failure. Rest reads as falling behind. I grapple with this every day.

For someone who has navigated real loss — who learned early that the world can be suddenly, irrevocably rearranged and dangerous — control becomes the primary coping structure. You build your life carefully because you know how fast it can be taken. The painting gets very full. The brushstrokes get very deliberate. And underneath all of it, the original grief never really gets processed, because processing requires exactly what the control structure cannot tolerate: stillness and not knowing what comes next.

The body eventually forces the issue. It doesn’t argue. It doesn’t reason. It just starts expressing what the mind refuses to hold — through the skin, through the pulse, through the particular quality of depletion that no amount of sleep quite reaches.

In Chinese medicine we talk about this in terms of Blood and Qi and the relationship between the Liver and the Heart. But the clinical language, precise as it is, still points at something that runs deeper than any organ system. It points at the question of what a person is when they stop performing their own identity for five minutes.

That’s what the acupuncture needle is asking, at its best. Not what’s wrong with you. But who are you when nothing is required of you right now?

Most people, in those forty-five minutes on the table, find out that the answer is: I’m still here. Surprisingly okay.

The water has to be still enough to reflect the heavens.

You can’t manufacture that stillness. You can’t achieve it. You can create conditions for it — through rest, through nourishment, through the gradual, unglamorous work of letting the system recover. And then you wait. The sediment settles. The surface clears. And what gets reflected isn’t anything you put there. It was always there. You just couldn’t see it through the disturbance.

I don’t tell my patients to stop achieving. I don’t think ambition is the pathology. I think the inability to rest is the pathology — and it’s remarkably common, and remarkably well-disguised as virtue.

The blank canvas isn’t the goal. It’s not even a permanent state. It’s a moment of recovery. A return to the surface. A chance to remember that the canvas was there before the painting started.

That’s enough. Sometimes that’s everything. I keep reminding myself of that every day.

There is a specific kind of fatigue that has no name in English. It arrives before breakfast. It lives in the two seconds between unlocking your phone and the first headline. It is the weight of caring about everything simultaneously — wars, legislation, algorithms, the slow dismantling of things you thought were permanent — while being able to touch almost none of it. You are flooded before the coffee is made.

This is not an accident.

Two Circles

Stephen Covey, the organizational psychologist whose 1989 book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People became one of the bestselling works of nonfiction in history, drew two concentric circles. The outer one he called the circle of concern — everything you care about, everything that registers as mattering: your family, your community, your country, the planet, the future. The inner circle he called the circle of influence — the subset of those things you can actually affect through your choices, your presence, your action.

Wisdom, he argued, lives in the overlap. Effective people direct their energy toward what they can influence. Over time, that circle tends to grow. Ineffective people — and more importantly, people made ineffective by design — focus obsessively on their circle of concern while their circle of influence atrophies. The ratio between the two becomes the measure of your political and psychological health. My daughters got sick of hearing about this when they were growing up.

The modern media economy has made a specific and enormously profitable business out of expanding your circle of concern toward infinity while your circle of influence stays the size of a NYC studio apartment. The gap between what you know about and what you can affect has never been wider. And we have been convinced, subtly, that knowing is the same as doing. That outrage is participation. That the scroll is the protest march. It isn’t.

The Flood

Steve Bannon — former Goldman Sachs banker, Breitbart executive chairman, and chief strategist of the first Trump White House — articulated his political methodology with unusual candor in 2018. The strategy, he said, was to “flood the zone with shit.” Not to persuade. Not to win arguments. To overwhelm — to produce such a volume of competing narratives, disinformation, and manufactured controversy that the very concept of a shared factual ground would start to dissolve. When everything is a story, nothing is.

This is not new as a concept. It is new as a policy. Implemented with the infrastructure of 24-hour cable news, social media algorithms optimized for engagement (which is to say, for outrage), bot networks, and a collapsed advertising model that rewards sensation over accuracy, it becomes something qualitatively different from propaganda. Propaganda tries to make you believe something. Zone flooding tries to make you believe nothing — or more precisely, to make the effort of discernment feel so costly that you simply stop.

Neil Postman was a media critic and NYU professor who spent his career studying how communication technologies reshape human consciousness. In Amusing Ourselves to Death (1985), he argued that Aldous Huxley had been more prophetic than George Orwell. We would not be enslaved by pain, Postman wrote — by the boot, the telescreen, the memory hole. We would be pacified by pleasure: by entertainment so total, so continuous, so structurally incompatible with serious thought, that the capacity for civic reasoning would simply fade from disuse. Television, he argued, had already begun this work.

Postman could not have anticipated that we would eventually get both simultaneously. The Huxleyan pleasure apparatus — the endless scroll, the dopamine-optimized feed, the algorithmically perfect outrage loop — married to something much closer to Orwell’s information warfare. We are distracted and destabilized. Entertained and gaslit. The combination is more potent than either alone, because the distraction makes the gaslighting harder to identify, and the gaslighting makes the distraction feel like relief.

Tuning out, in this context, stops being laziness. It becomes a rational response to an irrational environment. And that is precisely the problem.

What Chronic Concern Does to the Brain That Needs to Respond to It

The amygdala does not distinguish between a threat to your body and a threat to your values. To your nervous system, a headline about the dismantling of democratic institutions registers in the same threat-detection circuitry as a sound in a dark alley. The HPA axis activates. Cortisol rises. The prefrontal cortex — the seat of nuanced reasoning, long-term planning, and the capacity to hold complexity — gets dampened in favor of faster, simpler responses.

This is adaptive if the threat is immediate and you can act. It is catastrophic if the threat is diffuse, continuous, and largely outside your control — which is the precise signature of the modern news environment.

Sustained sympathetic activation without the relief of effective action produces a specific psychological state that researchers call learned helplessness. You learn, through repetition, that your responses don’t change outcomes. And so you stop responding. Not from apathy — from a kind of neurological self-protection. The organism stops trying because trying has cost too much for too little return.

The cruelest irony is this: the media environment that demands your constant concern is simultaneously producing the neurological conditions that make meaningful response to that concern impossible. You are being flooded with information about things that require your best cognitive and civic capacities at the exact moment those capacities are being most compromised. The medium is manufacturing the incapacity it then profits from.

A Spleen Pathology

Classical Chinese medicine has a word for what happens when thinking becomes pathological: it loops. The emotion associated with the Spleen — the Earth phase — is sī (思), often translated as worry, pensiveness, or rumination. In its healthy expression, sī is the capacity for focused thought, for concentration, for holding a problem long enough to transform it. The Spleen governs transformation and transportation. It takes in, processes, and moves. This is its genius.

When sī becomes excessive — when the Spleen is taxed beyond its capacity — thinking no longer transforms. It circles. It consumes Qi without producing movement. The Yì (意) — the Spleen’s associated spirit, the faculty of intention — loses its capacity to form clear direction. You think without arriving anywhere. You care without acting. You scroll.

This is not merely a metaphor. It maps onto the neurobiology with uncomfortable precision. Chronic rumination over things outside your influence is a Spleen tax. The media environment, with its infinite scroll and its algorithmic genius for keeping you just engaged enough to keep going, is one of the most efficient Spleen-depleting technologies ever designed.

The classical treatment isn’t numbness. It isn’t disengagement. It’s transformation. Return the Qi to movement. Ground the Yi in something it can actually do. Shrink the input to what can be processed. This is not the same as ignorance. It is digestion as a practice.

Wu Wei Is Not Tuning Out

Zhuangzi, the 4th century Daoist philosopher whose parables remain among the most psychologically precise texts in any tradition, tells the story of Cook Ding — a butcher whose blade never dulls because he has learned to find the spaces in the ox where the knife moves freely, following the natural structure rather than forcing through it. This is Wu Wei (無為) in action.

Wu Wei — the Daoist principle usually translated as “non-action” or “effortless action” — has become the philosophical cover story for a kind of sophisticated disengagement. We tell ourselves we are flowing like water, following the Tao, not forcing — when what we are actually doing is avoiding the friction of showing up. This is not Wu Wei. It is its exact counterfeit.

Wu Wei means action without forcing — movement that aligns with the natural pattern (理, lǐ) rather than bulldozing against it. The Daoist master is not passive. They are exquisitely responsive. The physician practicing Wu Wei doesn’t ignore pathology — they find the point of least resistance at which the body’s own intelligence can reassert itself and apply the needle there.

Wu Wei in the political moment is not logging off. It is finding where your specific presence, your specific skill, your specific voice, meets the actual grain of what is needed — and moving there, without wasted force. It requires more presence, not less. More clarity about your actual circle of influence, not a romantic dissolution of the question.

The distracted scroll is the opposite of Wu Wei. It is maximum input, minimum movement, zero transformation. It is the Spleen running hot with nothing to show for it.

Tawakkul Is Not Riding It Out

Ibn Arabi — the 12th century Andalusian mystic and philosopher whose concept of the Unity of Being (Wahdat al-Wujūd) remains the most systematic metaphysical account in Islamic thought — understood the soul’s relationship to divine will not as passive surrender but as active participation in how the Real discloses itself through human action.

The Arabic concept of Tawakkul (توكل) — trust in and reliance upon God — has a similarly comfortable misreading available. If you believe in a divine plan, if you trust in al-Haqq (the Real, one of the 99 names of Allah in Islamic theology), then perhaps the appropriate response to civilizational chaos is a kind of serene acceptance. Insha’Allah and keep stepping.

This is not Tawakkul. Classical Islamic jurisprudence is explicit: Tawakkul without asbab — without taking means, without doing your part — is not trust. It is negligence. The Prophet’s formulation is so clear in its simplicity: “Tie your camel securely, then put your trust in God.” First the action. Then the surrender of the outcome.

Ibn Arabi understood Tawakkul as the mature soul’s recognition that outcomes belong entirely to the divine, while the movement toward those outcomes is itself the divine will expressing through the human agent. You are not separate from the plan. You are part of how it unfolds. Withdrawal from the effort is not submission to God. It is, in this context, a refusal of the role you have been given.

The tension between spiritual surrender and civic activism is real. But neither Wu Wei nor Tawakkul resolves that tension by choosing disengagement. Both traditions, in their orthodox forms, insist that action and surrender are simultaneous — not sequential, not oppositional. You act with everything you have. You release the outcome completely. These are not contradictions. They are the same gesture.

The Uncomfortable Question

Is ignorance bliss? Is tuning out an act of mental health preservation?

The honest answer is: it depends on where you are standing.

For someone whose existence is directly and immediately threatened by the specific policies being enacted, tuning out is not preservation — it is exposure. It’s dropping your hands in the Boxing ring. The luxury of disengagement is distributed very unequally. Some people cannot afford to look away because the thing they would be looking away from is aimed at them.

For those with sufficient insulation — and many who read essays like this have it — “bliss” is a moral vacation taken at someone else’s expense. Not always. Not simply. But worth articulating.

And yet. The alternative — total immersion in the flood — does not produce more effective citizens. It produces more exhausted, more reactive, more neurologically compromised ones. The people most submerged in the information environment are often the least capable of the kind of slow, difficult, relationship-based civic work that actually changes things. The outrage is real. The action it produces is often performative. The performance consumes the energy that the action would have required.

We are amusing ourselves to death, as Postman warned. But we are also worrying ourselves to death. And we are doing both in a media environment deliberately engineered to ensure that neither amusement nor worry ever quite tips into the transformative discomfort that produces genuine change.

A Practice, Not a Solution

There is no clean resolution here. The world is on fire. Turning away from fire is sometimes survival and sometimes complicity, and only you can know which one you are doing in a given moment.

But let’s be honest about where we actually are.

We are living through a deliberate stress-test of democratic attention. The strategy is not hidden — it was announced. Flood the zone. Exhaust the discerners. Make the cost of staying informed high enough that the reasonable person eventually opts out, and then govern the absence. It is working. Civic participation data, trust in institutions, the basic shared agreement that facts exist — all are in measurable decline. We are not failing democracy through indifference. We are being managed into indifference by people who understand exactly what they are doing.

Which means the response cannot simply be feel less. It has to be act differently.

Not more. Differently.

Here is what that might actually look like:

— Unfollow the theater, follow the mechanism. National outrage-bait is almost always a distraction from the specific, unglamorous legislative or judicial move happening underneath it. While you are furious about the thing everyone is furious about, something quieter is being signed, defunded, or restructured. Find one reporter, one newsletter, one organization that tracks the mechanism in your specific area of concern — not the drama of it, the machinery of it. Give that your attention instead.

— Convert concern into a single local action per week. One school board meeting. One call to a state representative — not federal, where the call volume makes individual contact nearly meaningless, but state, where it doesn’t. One conversation with a neighbor who doesn’t already agree with you. The local is where the circle of influence is actually sized for a human being. It is also, not coincidentally, where the least attention is being paid.

— Protect your nervous system as a civic act. This is not self-indulgence. A dysregulated, cortisol-flooded citizen is less capable of nuanced thought, harder to organize with, and more susceptible to the very manipulation they are trying to resist. Tending your capacity to think clearly — through sleep, through silence, through the deliberate rationing of your news intake — is not tuning out. It is maintaining the instrument. You cannot play well when you are exhausted, and this moment requires everyone to play well.

— Sit with the people who disagree with you. Not to convert them. Not to perform patience for your own conscience. But because the alternative — the total informational self-sorting that the algorithm prefers and profits from — is how a democracy loses its connective tissue entirely. You do not have to abandon your convictions. You have to stay in the room. This is the hardest one. It is also the one that cannot be outsourced to a screen.

None of this is sufficient. The forces currently arrayed against democratic governance are well-funded, tactically sophisticated, and operating with a clarity of purpose that the opposition has rarely matched. There is no individual lifestyle adjustment that resolves a structural problem. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.

But exhausted, overwhelmed, doom-scrolling citizens are exactly what the structural problem requires to sustain itself. Your attention is not just a personal resource. It is a political one. How you spend it is a choice with consequences beyond your own mental health.

Tie the camel. Find your true north. Show up where your hands can actually reach something.

And then — only then — let go of the rest.

While other kids were doing whatever kids did to belong, I was somewhere else — inside music, inside martial arts, inside questions that didn’t have easy answers. It wasn’t a choice exactly. It was more like a gravitational pull toward certain people and certain things that refused to look away from reality. The good, the bad, the ugly.

Miles Davis. John Coltrane. Mahler. Stravinsky. Beethoven. Bruce Lee. Muhammad Ali. Ram Dass. Rumi.

Not simpletons. Not one of them.

What they shared across every tradition and genre was this: they went through reality rather than around it. The difficulty, the dissonance, the suffering — that was the material, not the obstacle. Mahler scored the end of a world. Some say he scored his own death. Coltrane played through his own dissolution and came out the other side with A Love Supreme. Beethoven wrote the Ninth deaf and broken. Bruce Lee said the system will put you in a box and your whole job is to remain water. Ali willingly gave up everything in an act of moral courage. Ram Dass spent fifty years teaching people how to stay present inside unbearable reality without numbing out or being destroyed.

These were my people. Still are. Sadly, all now gone. Which is its own kind of loneliness.

Now I watch the ship taking on water while everyone around me is at the bar watching The Bachelor. And I’m the one who seems like the problem — too intense, too dark, too political, too much.

Except I’m not dark. I’m awake.

There’s a difference. A real one.

Dark people have given up on beauty. I listen to Coltrane’s Ballads when I wake up. I study Ibn Arabi between soundcheck and the show. I practice medicine rooted in a tradition three thousand years deep. I train. I read. I find these things genuinely life-giving — not as escape, but as nourishment.

What I can’t do — what I’ve never been able to do — is pretend the water isn’t rising just because it hasn’t reached my house yet.

The Greeks had a word for this problem. Cassandra.

Given the gift of true vision by Apollo, cursed when she refused him — that no one would ever believe her. She saw the wooden horse for what it was. She stood at the gates of Troy and said plainly: this will destroy us. They called her hysterical. They brought the horse inside. The city burned.

That’s not a myth about prediction. It’s a myth about the social cost of perception. About what happens to the person who sees clearly in a room full of people who’ve made a collective agreement not to look. She doesn’t become a hero. She becomes inconvenient. The mirror everyone resents. The mood killer at the feast.

There is a particular exhaustion that belongs only to this position. It’s not the exhaustion of hard work, or grief, or even injustice — those have a shape you can name and therefore carry. This is something more disorienting: the exhaustion of being awake in a room full of sleepers who are angry at you for making noise.

You learn to calibrate. You pick your moments. You don’t lead with the sinking ship at every dinner party. You develop a kind of internal triage — what’s worth saying, to whom, and when. You get good at reading the room not to perform for it, but to decide how much of yourself it’s safe to bring.

Antonio Gramsci, writing from a fascist prison cell in the 1930s — which is its own form of credential on this subject — put it this way: “The crisis consists precisely in the fact that the old is dying and the new cannot be born; in this interregnum, a great variety of morbid symptoms appear.” He called the necessary posture “pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will.” See clearly. Act anyway. Don’t let the clarity become paralysis, and don’t let the action become denial.

That’s the sentinel’s job description. See what’s there. Sound the alarm when it matters. Accept that most people won’t want to hear it. Sound it anyway.

The part they don’t tell you is what this costs over time. It’s not a single blow. It’s more like what Gramsci was describing from the inside — the morbid symptoms accumulating quietly. The steady drip of being the one who sees and the one who is unseen simultaneously. Carried alone, without a community of people who share your reality, that perception metabolizes as something close to trauma. Not a Mike Tyson punch. More like taking a steady dose of jabs every day. Each one survivable. The accumulation, less so.

And still. You don’t put the rose-colored glasses on. Because you know what’s on the other side of that choice — you’ve watched people make it. The narrowing. The managed smallness of a life organized around not-seeing. The way comfort becomes its own kind of cage.

I’ve thought about putting the rose-colored glasses on. Genuinely considered it. I even bought a pair...made in China.

Maybe ignorance is the smarter move? Maybe the people who’ve narrowed their sphere of concern to their own immediate life have stumbled onto something adaptive that I’m too proud or too stubborn to access?

But I don’t think I believe that. Not really.

Because the alternative — the lineage I actually belong to — suggests something different. That the capacity to perceive clearly, to hold complexity, to refuse comfortable fiction, is not a pathology to be managed. It’s a calling to be inhabited.

The question isn’t whether to see. It’s whether you’ve built a container large enough to hold what you’re seeing without it devouring you.

I’ve been building that container my whole life. The music, the medicine, the philosophy, the martial arts practice. The kid who didn’t fit in was actually doing something — constructing, slowly, a way of being in the world that could hold full perception without collapsing under it.

The current moment is just an unusually severe stress test.

So far the container is holding.

I’m still awake. Still watching. Still sounding the alarm when it matters.

I understand if that sounds like magic. It isn’t. But explaining why it isn’t requires a different map of the body than the one most of us were handed.

Let me try three maps at once.

The Same Chord, Different Instruments

A C major chord is C, E, and G. It doesn’t matter whether a piano plays it, a trumpet plays it, or a guitar plays it — the harmonic relationships between those notes are identical. The information of the chord exists independently of which instrument plays it.

The body works the same way.

Chinese medicine recognized centuries ago that the body is holographic — meaning that every region contains a complete map of the whole. The information encoded in your shoulder exists in your hip. The information in your wrist exists in your ankle. The occipital ridge at the base of your skull carries a detailed map of your heel. Same chord, different instrument.

This isn’t new age woo-woo. A hologram is not like a photograph. If you cut a photograph in half, you lose half the image. Cut a hologram in half and each piece still contains the entire image — at lower resolution, but complete. Modern biology is beginning to catch up to this idea through embryology, fascial research, and systems neuroscience. The body doesn’t store its information in isolated compartments. It distributes it everywhere.

What this means clinically: a practitioner can address your knee by working your elbow. Your low back through your elbow crease. Your heel through the back of your skull. When a region is too inflamed, too recently injured, or post-surgical to treat directly, the holographic map offers an alternative address. The body receives the same information through a different door.

Holographic imaging: the leg, foot, and hand each contain complete maps of the body.

Master Tung and the Law of Correspondence

No practitioner took holographic imaging further — or with more clinical precision — than Master Tung Ching-Chang, a 20th-century acupuncturist whose family lineage preserved a system of points largely unknown to mainstream Chinese medicine until he began teaching in Taiwan in the 1960s.

Tung’s system is built on what is often called the Law of Correspondence or the Law of Signature: the idea that the body’s holographic maps are not merely anatomical — they are also layered by tissue depth. The needle itself becomes a diagnostic and therapeutic instrument depending on how deeply it is inserted.

Skin condition? Needle to the skin level.

Muscle or soft tissue injury? Needle to the muscular layer.

Blood, hormonal, or systemic disorder? Needle to the vascular level.

Arthritis, degenerative bone disease, constitutional weakness? Needle to the periosteum — the bone itself.

The location of the needle on the holographic map tells you where to treat. The depth of insertion tells you what you are treating. This two-axis system — map location and tissue depth — gives Tung’s acupuncture a remarkable clinical specificity, and explains results that can otherwise seem almost implausible to the uninitiated.

The patient whose heel resolved after needling the back of her skull? That’s Tung’s system at work — the occiput as a holographic address for the heel, the needle depth calibrated to the tissue layer involved. Not magic. Precision.

Modes Over the Chord

A jazz musician improvising over a C major chord has choices. He can play Ionian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Dorian, Phrygian — or reach for the diminished scale, which introduces a completely different kind of harmonic tension altogether. Each of these modes rubs against the chord differently, offering the improviser a distinct color and emotional palette. Same chord underneath. The mode determines everything about what the music feels like.

A Chinese medicine practitioner faces the same decision.

The body’s channels — the pathways through which Qi and blood move — exist in paired relationships. Tai Yang, the outermost defensive layer, pairs with Tai Yin, which governs the interior. Shao Yang, the body’s hinge between inside and out, pairs with Shao Yin, the deepest constitutional root. Jue Yin, the innermost yin, pairs with Yang Ming, the great consolidating yang. These aren’t arbitrary categories. They represent different qualities of energy, different depths of the body, different phases of movement. When a patient presents with a Tai Yang pattern — think of that as the underlying chord — the practitioner can work that channel directly. Or they can work its pair, approaching the same disharmony from a completely different modal angle. Or descend into the Shao Yin to reach the deeper constitutional layer underneath the surface presentation.

The choice of mode determines not just where you treat, but the quality of the resolution you’re reaching for. Some clinical moments call for direct address. Others call for the oblique approach — the complementary system, the unexpected door. The skill is knowing which mode the moment calls for.

And then there is the question of which notes within the mode you choose to play.

Each acupuncture point belongs to a category that describes its function within the channel’s larger movement. The Jing Well points — at the very tips of the fingers and toes — are like a single struck note: initiating, clarifying, used to open a channel or clear an acute obstruction. The Shu Stream points carry a developing, gathering quality, like a melodic phrase building momentum through a progression. The He Sea points, located at the elbows and knees, are points of return and convergence — resolution, homecoming, the phrase completing itself. The arranger writing for a string quartet doesn’t just choose the notes; he chooses which instruments carry lines and at what dynamic. The practitioner choosing point categories is making the same decision — same chord, but what quality of resonance does this particular moment require?

The Six Harmonies

Chinese martial artists have a concept called the Six Harmonies. The shoulders harmonize with the hips. The elbows harmonize with the knees. The hands harmonize with the feet. In Tai Chi, Xingyi, Bagua — and in all serious martial arts — these six relationships move as one. The hand doesn’t strike; the whole body arrives at the hand. Separation is weakness. Coherence is power.

This is not a metaphor for how Chinese medicine works. It is the same principle, expressed through a different practice.

The body already knows how to be whole. The Six Harmonies aren’t something the martial artist imposes on the body — they’re something one learns to stop interrupting. The holographic maps in Chinese medicine aren’t invented systems projected onto the body — they’re the body’s own organizational intelligence, observed over millennia and given clinical language.

When disease arises, something in that coherence has been disrupted. A channel is blocked. A paired relationship has fallen out of resonance. Treatment — whether through needles, herbs, or the practitioner’s hands — is the art of restoring the conversation between parts that have stopped listening to each other.

The heel and the skull. The shoulder and the hip. The Tai Yang and the Tai Yin. The Jing Well and the He Sea.

Same chord. The whole body playing it together.

I’ve been practicing Chinese medicine for nearly a decade, and I still find the holographic principle quietly astonishing. Not because it defies explanation — it doesn’t — but because it keeps revealing new clinical possibilities the longer you work with it. The body is more organized, more self-referential, more intelligent than any map we’ve drawn of it. The maps just help us find our way in.

My patient’s heel is fine. She is pain free, walking freely, and has returned happily to dancing on the Broadway stage.

There is a vessel in Chinese medicine that runs horizontally. Just one. Every other channel in the body moves vertically — up and down, heaven to earth, past to future. But Dai Mai, the Belt Vessel, wraps around the waist like a sash. It doesn’t travel anywhere. It holds.

Its entire function is to define the circumference of who you are right now.

I think about this vessel constantly. Not just in the clinic — but in life. Because nothing exposes the state of Dai Mai quite like transition.

Consider what happens when someone retires after forty years of a career that was also an identity. The surgeon who no longer operates. The athlete whose body finally said no. The musician who steps offstage for the last time. The parent whose last child has left home. Or someone in their mid 60’s still behaving like they’re in their mid 20’s.

The external circumstances have changed. But internally? The belt is still cinched to the old shape.

This is what I see clinically when Dai Mai is too tight: a person whose self-concept cannot release its grip on a previous version of themselves. The belt has become a tourniquet. New experience, new roles, new chapters of life — none of it can integrate, because the circumference is fixed. Nothing moves between above and below. The extraordinary vessels, which carry our deepest constitutional resources, can no longer communicate freely. The person is, quite literally, bound to their own history.

You see it in the body — tension in the lateral ribs, the hips, the waist. But you also see it in the eyes. A kind of fixed quality. A person still trying to be who they were in a world that has already moved on.

But Dai Mai has another failure mode, and it is subtler.

Too lax, and the belt offers no container at all. This is the person for whom every transition is a dissolution. No continuity of self across change. They reinvent entirely with each new relationship, each new circumstance — and lose the thread of their own life in the process. Post-partum, post-trauma, post-surgery, post-loss — the belt simply gave way. Nothing is held. Everything leaks. All starts, no finishes.

We tend to pathologize the too-tight and romanticize the too-lax as “going with the flow.” But both are forms of disharmony. Both represent a Dai Mai that cannot find its calibration.

There is a further distinction: the difference between chosen transition and unchosen transition.

Someone who retires voluntarily and someone who is forced out land in the same Monday morning — but in entirely different internal landscapes. One has made an offering of the old identity, even if reluctantly. The other has had it taken. The phenomenology is completely different, even when the external situation looks identical.

The unchosen transition often produces a rigidity in Dai Mai that isn’t stubbornness. It’s grief. The body holding onto what the mind cannot yet release. This is important clinically — and it is important humanly.

We Are All in Transition Now

This is not only a personal story. It is a collective one.

America is changing — in part by choice, in part by force. The belt that held a particular configuration of national identity, economic assumption, and shared meaning is straining. And the society, like the individual patient, is splitting along exactly those two Dai Mai failure modes.

Some are cinching tighter: the reassertion of older certainties, the desperate return to a circumference the world has already grown past. Others are in free dissolution: no container, no continuity, no legible narrative of self or nation. Most of us are somewhere in between — feeling the belt strain without knowing yet what shape it is trying to become.

Climate change applies a slow, vast, largely unchosen pressure. The circumference of what it means to live on this planet is shifting whether we consent or not. The denial response — the too-tight Dai Mai — is understandable before it is political. It is grief wearing the costume of certainty. But the belt will not hold against physics indefinitely.

Artificial intelligence is a different kind of pressure, and in some ways a more intimate one. It strikes directly at the question Dai Mai encodes in the body: who am I, and what is the boundary of that self? If intelligence — long considered the defining human faculty — is no longer exclusively human, what is the circumference of personhood? People are feeling this viscerally, in their careers, their creative identities, their sense of purpose. The question is not whether AI makes us obsolete. The question is whether we can find the new calibration without either clinging to a pre-AI self-concept or dissolving entirely into whatever comes next.

We’ve Been Here Before

When digital audio workstations arrived, the argument was the same. Why spend hours in the practice room when you can drag a beat or a chord progression in? The producers who used those tools to go deeper into their craft became more capable. The ones who used them to avoid actually learning music, developing an ear and skills, produced work that aged badly and didn’t know why. The technology didn’t determine the outcome. The relationship to the technology did.

Most people want the result without the process. They want longevity hacks. They don’t want to eat clean, exercise, sleep well, and be up at 5am doing qigong and meditation. I understand this. But the process is not the obstacle to the outcome. The process is the point. The transformation happens in the doing — and it cannot be dragged and dropped.

What AI cannot replicate, what Chinese medicine at its depth cannot replicate through shortcuts, is the accumulated embodied relational intelligence that comes from genuine engagement over time. Your hands at the needles. Your ear on the bandstand. Your presence in the treatment room. No technology changes what that is, or what it requires.

Finding Balance

I named my clinic Finding Balance. It wasn’t a marketing decision.

I am, by nature, a perfectionist. All-in or nothing. The belt tends toward too tight. I know this from the inside — the gap between where I am and where I think I should be, experienced as failure rather than as the natural movement of a life that is, by definition, always in motion.

What I have had to learn — am still learning — is that finding balance is not a destination. It is not a fixed point you locate and then stand on. It is a practice of constant, subtle recalibration. The middle ground is not static. It moves, because reality moves. The question is whether you can move with it.

This is what every wisdom tradition in the epigraphs above is pointing at. And it is what Dai Mai encodes in the body itself. Not an answer. A posture. A way of riding the ongoing shift without being strangled by the past or lost in the formless.

If you are in transition right now — by choice or by circumstance — the discomfort you feel is not a sign that you are failing. It is the belt finding its new circumference. That process is supposed to be uncomfortable. It means something real is happening.

The work — whether in the clinic, on the meditation cushion, in the therapy room, or simply in the privacy of your own life — is to support that process. Not to force it. Not to abandon it. To hold it with enough structure that it can complete itself.

The middle way, as it turns out, is not a compromise. It is the most demanding thing there is.

My homeroom teacher was a World War II veteran. He took it personally — not aggressively, but in the way a man takes it personally when something he nearly died for is treated as optional by a teenager. He sent me to the principal’s office. The principal, to his credit, wanted to understand why. So I told him: the Pledge says “one nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all.” I looked around and I did not see liberty and justice for all. I was not going to stand up and say something I believed to be untrue. He offered a compromise — I could stand, silently, without my hand on my heart, without saying the words. I accepted. For the rest of my years in that school, I stood and said nothing.

That was almost fifty years ago. I am still standing. Still saying nothing would be a huge lie.

A few nights ago, in Washington DC near the end of the “Land of Hope and Dreams/No Kings” tour, something beautiful and painful came about. Our guest guitarist, Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine, had arranged a private viewing of the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Just our group. The building quiet. The weight of the place unmuted by crowds. Ghosts were there with us, singing the blues as a form of prayer.

I thought I was prepared. I have spent decades studying jazz, which means studying the people, the culture and the conditions that produced it. I have sat at the feet of West African spiritual masters whose lineage runs back centuries through the same cultures that were decimated by the slave trade — men whose wisdom traditions, whose Arabic literacy, whose understanding of the sacred were precisely the qualities that made them valuable cargo to those who trafficked in human beings. I have friends whose family histories I know, whose traditions I have tried to honor. I have never worn the red, white, and blue glasses when it comes to looking at this country.

None of that prepared me for last night.

There are the names of the ships. The manifest numbers. The arithmetic of human cargo packed into hulls. And then there is the fact — the fact that some people, upon understanding what awaited them, chose the ocean instead. Chose drowning. That choice, made in the dark of the Atlantic, tells you everything you need to know about what they knew was coming.

A significant portion of the Africans brought to this country in chains were Muslim. Wolof. Hausa. Fulani. Mandinka. Many were scholars. Many were literate in Arabic at a time when literacy in any language was rare in the colonies. They arrived not as primitives to be civilized but as human beings of extraordinary cultivation — and were treated as livestock. Their languages were destroyed. Their family structures dismantled at auction. Their spiritual traditions driven underground, where they survived anyway, transformed over generations into something the world would eventually call American music, American dance, American style — the one American export that the entire world has embraced without reservation.

Which brings me to Amadou Diallo.

Diallo was Wolof. A young man from Guinea who came to this country, as so many have, drawn by the promise this nation makes to the world. On the night of February 4, 1999, four plainclothes officers fired forty-one shots at him in the vestibule of his own apartment building in the Bronx. He was unarmed. He was reaching for his wallet. He was twenty-three years old. The officers were all acquitted. They always are.

Every Black parent in this country — regardless of education, regardless of profession, regardless of wealth — has a conversation with their children about how to behave if they are stopped by law enforcement. It is called, simply, the talk. I have friends who are amateur boxers, world-class musicians, CEOs of major private equity firms in New York City. All of them have had to have this conversation with their children. Because the data is unambiguous: level of education, level of accomplishment, level of wealth are irrelevant in that moment. You follow the script outlined in the talk, or you might end up like Amadou Diallo. The talk is not paranoia. The talk is a survival manual for living in a country that has not yet decided whether your life is fully worth protecting.

On this tour, one of the songs we play every night is Bruce Springsteen’s “American Skin (41 Shots).” It was written about Diallo. It is not a comfortable, feel-good song. It was not designed to be. When it lands in an arena in Washington DC in 2026, in this political climate, it lands differently than it did when Bruce first played it. The audience feels it. The band feels it. The weight of those forty-one shots does not diminish with time. If anything, the accumulation of names since 1999 makes the song heavier every year.

I thought about that song as I walked through those galleries. The same people. The same wound. A different vestibule.

In my clinic, I work with this principle every day: a complete and honest history is the foundation of an accurate diagnosis. The degree to which a patient is forthcoming about the full arc of their story is precisely the degree to which I can be accurate in my assessment and effective in my treatment. When pieces of history are omitted — from shame, from trauma, from a desire to present a better version of events — my diagnosis drifts. The treatment misses. The patient calls three days later and the pain is still there, or worse.

A nation is no different.

We have been given, for generations, a strategically incomplete history. The mythology of founding fathers, manifest destiny, the shining city on the hill. And alongside that mythology, the actual history: land taken, indigenous people destroyed, Africans brought in chains, labor extracted for centuries without compensation, culture appropriated and monetized, a constitutional promise of liberty and justice made in explicit exclusion of the people doing most of the work. Black people in this country have been naming this for generations. The data remains unambiguous: equal education reliably produces twenty to thirty percent less income if you are Black. If your name sounds too Black your application is tossed irrespective of qualifications. Maternal health outcomes diverge dramatically along racial lines. Voting rights are being dismantled in plain sight, right now, in 2026.

The music the world loves is Black music. The fashion. The language. The spiritual and aesthetic vocabulary that has shaped American culture at every level — including the formation of many of us who are not Black, who learned to hear, to move, to understand beauty through a tradition not our own — came from those people. The very people whose political representation is being systematically eroded. The very people whose children still need the talk.

We consume the fruit without honoring the tree. We build our inner lives on a foundation we refuse to acknowledge. And then we wonder why the structure keeps cracking.

This is the original sin of this nation — not in the sense of inherited guilt that cannot be escaped, but in the sense of a wound that was never properly treated. In my healing tradition, an unaddressed pathology does not resolve on its own. It goes deeper. It finds new expressions. It recruits other systems into the dysfunction. What looks like a new crisis is almost always an old injury that was never honestly assessed.

Carl Jung called the unexamined parts of ourselves the shadow. He argued that the refusal to look does not make the shadow smaller. It makes it stronger. The turbulence we are living through — the fractures, the fury, the feeling that something foundational is coming apart — is not random. It is the return of what was never integrated. History does not disappear because we stop teaching it. It accumulates. It finds other forms.

I left that museum emotionally exhausted but thinking about a fourteen-year-old who refused to say the Pledge of Allegiance. Who was sent to an office and heard by a man with enough decency to find a third way. That capacity — to actually listen to a dissenting account, to adjust, to find a path that honors both the institution and the conscience standing before it — is what makes growth possible. In a person and in a people.

The Wolof scholars on those ships understood something about the sacred that their captors did not. Their descendants are still here, still teaching us — through the music, through the struggle, through forty-one shots that a man named Bruce turned into a hymn we sing every night on a stage in America. The least we can do is finally look at what we owe. And then do something about it.

“Are you a striker or a grappler?”

Both.

“Why do you train with weapons and firearms if you practice martial arts?”

Training with weapons and firearms IS martial arts.

“Why are you seeing a MD — I thought you were a TCM practitioner?”

I am. In China they use both seamlessly — not by watering either down, but by seeing them as a complementary toolbox in service of the patient.

“I thought you went to school for jazz performance. Why are you taking a classical symphonic analysis class?”

Because I love music.

“Brother, you shouldn’t read Ibn Arabi — that is bida’ (innovation in a negative sense, i.e. misguided). Stick with Ibn Taymiyya. Only do what the Prophet did.”

But brother how did you get to New York City?

“The subway.”

Did the Prophet ride a train?

“Excuse me sir… have you accepted Jesus as your savior?”

No. I think the one who saves me is the one who created me — the one Jesus fell on his face and prayed to.

These are not separate conversations. They are the same conversation, asked across different arenas, different decades, different disciplines. And the question underneath all of them is the same:

Why are you more than one thing?

The Narrowing

Somewhere in the last two centuries, we made a decision — not all at once, not consciously, but decisively — that depth meant narrowness. That expertise meant exclusion. That to truly know something, you had to stop looking at everything else.

It wasn’t always this way. And it wasn’t this way in only one place.

Shen Kuo, writing in 11th century Song dynasty China, produced a single book — Dream Pool Essays — that moved across astronomy, pharmacology, geology, mathematics, and poetry without pausing to apologize for the range. It wasn’t encyclopedism. It was one mind following one question through every available instrument.

Nezahualcoyotl ruled Texcoco in 15th century Mesoamerica, built the great dike that protected the lake cities, wrote philosophical poetry of a sophistication that still unsettles scholars, and developed a theology that some argue was functionally monotheistic well before Spanish contact. Ruler, engineer, poet, theologian. The categories didn’t conflict. They informed each other.

Miyamoto Musashi — whom most people know as a swordsman — spent the last years of his life painting, sculpting, and writing what is explicitly a theory of perception, not a fighting manual. The Book of Five Rings is an argument about how to see. The sword was just the domain in which he first learned to see it.

Amadou Hampâté Bâ was a 20th century Malian scholar, oral historian, ethnographer, diplomat, and Sufi initiate who devoted his life to preserving the intellectual traditions of the Sahel before they disappeared. He understood that knowledge lives in people, not institutions — and that when the people die untranscribed, the knowledge dies with them. “In Africa,” he said, “when an old man dies, a library burns.”

The medieval Islamic world held this same premise at its philosophical core — that knowledge was not a collection of separate rooms with locked doors, but a single inquiry conducted through multiple instruments simultaneously. Ibn Arabi — the 12th century Andalusian mystic whose metaphysics now forms the core of my doctoral dissertation — was simultaneously poet, jurist, philosopher, and systematizer of mystical experience so rigorous it has occupied scholars for eight centuries. He didn’t experience these as competing identities. They were facets of a single question: what is the nature of reality, and what is the nature of the human being who perceives it?

The Renaissance tried to hold this vision together. Leonardo da Vinci is the obvious archetype. But Leonardo was already, in some sense, playing defense. The fragmentation had already begun. The guilds were forming. The disciplines were building walls.

And then the industrial model colonized the university. Knowledge became a means of production. Expertise became a commodity. The specialist became the ideal — deep, narrow, credentialed, legible to institutions. The generalist became suspect. A dabbler. Someone who hadn’t committed.

We’ve been living in that world ever since.

What Specialization Costs

Let me be clear: this is not an argument against specialization per se. The surgeon who operates on your spine should be a specialist. The engineer who designs the bridge you drive across should be a specialist. Depth matters. Rigor matters. Years of focused practice matter enormously.

I know this because I’ve lived it — as a professional trumpeter who spent decades on tour, in the recording studio, and on Broadway performing eight shows a week; as a licensed acupuncturist running a clinic in New York City; as a doctoral student in classical Daoist medicine; as a lifelong martial artist. None of those things are casual. All of them required the kind of sustained, focused commitment that specialization demands.

But there is a cost when one mistakes focus for narrowness. And the cost is this:

Specialists often cannot see when the problem in front of them is the same problem someone already solved in a completely different field.

Physicists rediscovering what contemplatives mapped centuries ago. Neuroscientists describing states that meditators have been cataloguing in precise phenomenological detail for millennia — and treating their own findings as new. Epidemiologists and political scientists failing to recognize the same authoritarian pattern playing out simultaneously in public health institutions and democratic governance, because they’re each looking at it through a single disciplinary lens.

The same week I was asked about hantavirus — is it treatable, what’s the prognosis — a cruise ship sat isolated off the South African coast with a deadly outbreak on board, three passengers dead, the strain not yet identified. And in the same breath, we found ourselves talking about the systematic dismantling of the CDC, the degradation of the WHO relationship, the installation of unqualified ideologues into public health infrastructure.

A specialist sees a virology problem. And separately, a political science problem.

Someone trained to see across domains sees one problem: what happens to collective perception when the institutions that organize it are deliberately corrupted. That’s not a virology question. It’s not a political science question. It’s a question about epistemology — about the sociology of knowledge, about what Ibn Arabi would call the corruption of the perceiving faculty — the systematic dismantling of the capacity to orient toward truth.

It requires multiple lenses held simultaneously to even see it clearly.

Doing Your Own Research

I treat a lot of combat athletes in my clinic. Grapplers, strikers, MMA fighters — serious practitioners who have spent years mastering extraordinarily complex physical and strategic disciplines. I have profound respect for what they do and what it costs them.

Post-COVID, many of them arrived with firm views about vaccines, about pharmaceutical medicine, about institutional science. They had “done their own research.”

I stopped arguing about it. Not because the argument isn’t worth having — it is, especially when we’re talking about transmissible disease, where individual choices become public health externalities — but because debate in the clinical setting is rarely the right venue.

Instead I ask a question.

Does someone playing a UFC video game have the same level of qualification as a professional fighter who has trained for years?

They always know the answer. They’ve had that exact conversation defending their own training to someone who thinks watching fights on television makes them an expert.

What I’m doing is asking them to apply the epistemological standard they already hold — that expertise is real, that it’s earned through years of specific work, that there is a genuine difference between knowing and performing knowing — consistently across domains.

It’s a version of the train question. Did the Prophet ride a train?

Tradition is not the same as literalism. Expertise is not the same as credentialism. And the ability to search something on the internet is not the same as the capacity to evaluate what you find.

The tragedy of the post-COVID epistemological landscape is not that people became skeptical of institutions — some of that skepticism was earned. The tragedy is that the skills required to evaluate evidence, to trace causation across complex systems, to hold uncertainty without falling into either blind trust or reflexive rejection — those are precisely the skills that a culture of narrow specialization never developed in the first place.

Hannah Arendt wrote that the goal of authoritarian information strategy isn’t necessarily to make people believe false things. It’s to make them feel that nothing is truly knowable. An exhausted, cynical population that has given up on truth is far more manageable than one that is merely misinformed.

The specialist culture prepared us perfectly for this moment — and not in a good way. When you’ve never been trained to see patterns across domains, when your entire educational formation told you to stay in your lane, you have no tools for the moment when the lane itself is being deliberately flooded.

And here is the thing that took me a long time to understand: the antidote isn’t more information. It’s a different kind of perception. The capacity to recognize when the same pattern is playing out in different clothes — in a body, in a body politic, in a century-old philosophical text — is not a gift. It’s a practice. It has to be built, the same way you build a submission defense or a pulse diagnosis: through years of working the same problem from enough angles that the underlying structure finally becomes visible.

The Well and the Layers

I’ve been drilling the same well for a long time. The forms have changed — trumpet, recording studio, clinic, classroom, boxing ring, dissertation, this essay — but the underlying question has stayed essentially constant.

What happens to perception when it gets distorted? And how do you restore it?

In individuals, in culture, in history, in the body — it’s the same question. The Five Shen model in classical Chinese medicine is a map of how perception organizes itself across different registers of human experience. Ibn Arabi’s metaphysics of imagination — the barzakh, the isthmus where apparently opposing realities meet without collapsing into each other — is a map of how a mind stays coherent while holding genuine complexity.

These are not separate projects. They are the same project, conducted through different geological layers.

What the polymath cultivates — and what specialization systematically discourages — is the capacity to recognize isomorphic structures across different domains. To see that the problem of immune response and the problem of political radicalization and the problem of a patient who can’t integrate contradictory information about their own health are all, at some level of abstraction, the same problem.

Not identical. Isomorphic. Same shape, different substance.

Both

I am a trumpet player and an acupuncturist and a doctoral student and a martial artist and a writer. Not sequentially. Simultaneously.

It has cost real things — sustained focus, the comfort of a clear professional identity, the ease of fitting into existing categories. There are days it feels like being several people who have to share one body and one schedule.

But when I walk into a room, be it a clinic, a classroom, a tour bus, a jiu-jitsu mat — I can see the thing that the person trained only in that room cannot see, I understand what I’ve been building. Not a career. A perceptual instrument. One that took four decades to tune and will probably take another four to fully understand. The problems that actually matter right now — and you know which ones I mean — are not going to yield to any single lens. They never have. We just spent two centuries pretending otherwise, and we are living in the consequences.

Maybe we start by stopping the apology. Stopping the explanation of why we are more than one thing, as if multiplicity requires a defense.

Maybe we start treating pattern recognition across domains not as a personality quirk but as a discipline — one that can be cultivated, taught, modeled.

Maybe we start asking, in our clinics and classrooms and conversations, not just what do you know but what can you see.

The polymath isn’t a relic. The polymath is what this moment requires.

Both. Always both.

A Note on Three Terms

Bida’ — In Islamic jurisprudence, unlawful innovation: a departure from established tradition considered misguided or forbidden. Used here to illustrate how the question of authority and legitimacy plays out inside religious communities, just as it plays out inside academic disciplines.

Barzakh — From Ibn Arabi’s metaphysics: the isthmus, the intermediary space where apparently opposing realities meet without collapsing into one another. The word that comes closest, in any tradition I know, to describing what a genuinely cross-disciplinary mind actually does.

Shen — In classical Chinese medicine, often translated as ‘spirit’ or ‘mind,’ though neither fully captures it. The Shen encompasses consciousness, perception, and the capacity for self-awareness — the faculty that gets distorted when the institutions that organize collective truth are deliberately corrupted.

Every time something terrible happens — a school, a church, a grocery store — someone steps to a microphone and says it. “This is not who we are.” They say it with grief, sometimes with apparent conviction, and the cameras hold on their faces while the words dissolve into air. By the next news cycle, the phrase is already fading, and the country returns to what it was doing.

I’ve been listening to that sentence for most of my adult life. And I’ve come to believe it’s one of the most consequential lies we tell ourselves.

I say “we” deliberately. I’m not writing this from the outside. I’m a gun owner. I’m not interested in repealing the Second Amendment. Rights matter, and the right to bear arms is part of the American framework I was born into and have lived inside. But here’s what I know from almost fifty years of adult attention: every right carries a corresponding responsibility. You can’t have one without the other. The moment you claim the right while refusing the responsibility, you’ve started lying — and we have been lying, as a nation, for a very long time.

In some states, you can walk into a store, put your driver’s license on the counter, and walk out with a firearm. No background check. No mental health screening. No waiting period. Just a transaction. Children have been shot in classrooms by people who cleared no meaningful bar whatsoever to obtain the weapons that killed them. We know this. We have known this for decades. We pass around statistics, hold vigils, vote people in and out of office, and nothing structurally changes — and then the next one happens, and someone steps to a microphone again.

“This is not who we are.”

Except it is. It is precisely, documentably, repeatedly who we are.

Yesterday, two teenagers walked into the Islamic Center of San Diego — the largest mosque in San Diego County, a place that also houses a school for children — and opened fire. Three men were killed. Anti-Islamic writing was found in the shooters’ car. Hate speech was written on one of the firearms. The attack came the week before Eid al-Adha. The shooters were seventeen and eighteen years old.

This is not the first time that community has been targeted. It won’t be the last. And I want to be honest about something: this story will not receive the coverage it would receive if the victims were other people. There will be statements. There will be a brief news cycle. And then it will recede — because the victims were Muslim, and in the operating logic of American media and American politics, Muslim lives occupy a different tier of grievability. Selective outrage is something we are experts in.

The demonization of Muslims, Arabs, and Persians in this country didn’t begin with 9/11 — it was already running in film, in television, in political rhetoric going back to the 1970s. The Arab as terrorist. The Muslim as threat. The Persian collapsed into “Arab” by a population that has never been asked to know the difference. Two billion Muslims on earth. The ratio of violence among that population compared to total numbers is vanishingly small — smaller, I would argue, than the ratio of violence among Americans relative to our own population. And the countries that have been systematically destroyed in the last twenty-five years — Iraq, Libya, Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Yemen, Afghanistan — have been Muslim-majority nations, dismantled by the militaries of Western powers. The rubble is real. The cameras just don’t linger there.

What the cameras do linger on is the rhetoric. Sharia law coming for your hot dogs and beer. Women forced into burkas. The great replacement. Fox News, Newsmax, One America News — a sustained, decades-long project of othering, of manufacturing an enemy, of teaching young men who are already lost and angry to aim their rage at a target. And then two teenagers walk into a mosque with hate speech written on their guns, and we express shock. The truth is, for all our collective bluster; we scare easily and that fear is just as easily manipulated.

There is no honest shock here. There is only the question of whether we’re willing to look at the chain of causation clearly — or whether we’ll reach again for the phrase that lets us off the hook.

The gun violence is one part of the picture. The targeted killings are another. The erasure of history is a third — the systematic removal from classrooms and curricula of any honest accounting of what was done to Black Americans, to Indigenous peoples, to other countries that have resources we want, to anyone whose experience complicates the mythology of the shining city on the hill. The mythology requires a clean surface. You can’t sustain “We’re Number One” on a foundation of honest reckoning. So the history gets the surgery. The symptoms get suppressed. And there is enough material comfort in this country, enough insulation in the form of consumer goods and the daily management of individual lives, to function as collective novocaine — enough to keep most people from feeling what is actually wrong.

In Chinese medicine, we talk about the relationship between a symptom and the disease that generates it. A symptom is an invitation. It’s the body trying to communicate — something has gone out of balance, something requires attention. A practitioner who only suppresses symptoms without addressing the root is not treating the patient. They are managing appearances while the underlying pathology progresses.

A country that responds to mass shootings with rhetoric instead of policy, that responds to hate crimes with a news cycle instead of reckoning, that responds to documented historical harm with erasure instead of truth — this is a country suppressing its symptoms. And I have watched it long enough to say with some clinical confidence: the disease is progressing. The suppression is working, the way suppression always works, in the short term. But suppression is not treatment. It is delay. And the longer any pathology goes unaddressed, the narrower the window for genuine intervention becomes. At some point the disease progresses past the point where any intervention can turn it around.

“This is not who we are” is a prayer dressed up as a statement of fact. I understand the impulse behind it. I’ve felt it myself. But I think the more honest prayer — the one that might actually do something — begins from a different place.

This is exactly who we are. Now what are we going to do about it?

Appendix: What the History Actually Shows

The following are documented historical facts, included here because the essay above relies on them implicitly. These are not opinions. They are the record — the one we’ve been taught not to look at.

I. Islam Was Here Before America Was

Between 15 and 30 percent of the Africans brought to this continent in chains were Muslim — scholars at the Harvard Pluralism Project place the estimate as high as 50 percent. They came from the Islamic regions of West Africa: Senegal, Mali, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Gambia. Many were literate in Arabic. Many were scholars. The institution of American slavery did not just steal their labor — it systematically destroyed their identities, forced conversion to Christianity, and erased any public record of their faith. What it could not erase entirely was their knowledge. West African Muslim women, who had managed rice cultivation for generations, brought that expertise with them across the Middle Passage. The entire rice economy of colonial South Carolina — one of the most lucrative agricultural systems in early America — was built on the agricultural knowledge of enslaved African women, a significant portion of whom were Muslim. The plantation owners took the credit. The women got the lash. Islam did not arrive in America with immigration. It arrived in chains. It helped build this country. And it has been written out of the story ever since.

II. The Founding Fathers Were Influenced by Muslim Thought

John Locke — the philosopher whose ideas about natural rights, the social contract, and the limits of government are foundational to the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution — was directly shaped by Islamic philosophy. At Oxford, his most influential teacher was Edward Pococke, the university’s foremost scholar of Arabic and Islamic studies. Locke was exposed to the work of the 12th-century Andalusian Muslim philosopher Ibn Tufayl, whose book Hayy ibn Yaqzan — translated into Latin and widely read in European intellectual circles — articulated the concept of the human mind as a blank slate shaped by experience. Locke took this idea and built an epistemology around it that transformed Western political thought. The tabula rasa, the basis for Enlightenment ideas about human equality and the right to self-determination, has a Muslim intellectual grandfather. Locke was accused in his own lifetime of being a Muslim — which was meant as an insult, and which we can now read as an inadvertent acknowledgment of intellectual lineage. The Founding Fathers who built this nation on Lockean principles were, at one remove, building on ideas that had traveled from the Islamic world through the Iberian Peninsula to the libraries of Oxford. This is not a footnote. It is a thread in the fabric of the republic.

III. Muslims Don’t Hate Americans — They Hate What We’ve Done

The phrase “they hate us for our freedom” was coined in the aftermath of September 11th and has been repeated with such frequency that many Americans accept it as axiomatic. It is not. It is a propaganda formulation designed to prevent a more uncomfortable question: what specific policies, in what specific countries, have generated specific grievances? Pew Research consistently finds that what drives anti-American sentiment in Muslim-majority countries is not American culture, not American music, not American values — but American foreign policy: the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the drone programs, the support of authoritarian governments across the region. As for Muslim Americans themselves, 89 percent say they are proud to be both American and Muslim. They watch the same television, root for the same teams, pay the same taxes, raise their children in the same neighborhoods. The notion that two billion people on earth are animated by a theological hatred of American freedom is not a serious geopolitical analysis. It is a story we tell ourselves so we don’t have to look at what we’ve actually done abroad, and what we continue to do at home.

IV. There Is No Thousand-Year War Between Muslims and Jews

One of the most durable myths in contemporary political discourse is the claim that the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians is simply the latest chapter in a thousand years of Muslim-Jewish warfare — ancient, religious, inevitable. This is false in every particular way. There is no thousand-year war. What there is, in fact, is a long history of Jewish life flourishing under Islamic rule. During the Islamic Golden Age — roughly the 8th through the 13th centuries — Jewish communities across the Muslim world experienced a period of cultural, intellectual, and economic vitality that had no parallel in Christian Europe, where Jews were subject to massacre, forced conversion, and legal exclusion. In Muslim Spain, Jewish scholars, poets, physicians, and statesmen worked alongside their Muslim counterparts in a civilization that was, by the standards of its time, remarkable for its pluralism. It was not a utopia — historians are rightly careful about that — but it bore no resemblance to eternal enmity. The defining moment is 1492, the same year that anchors the American origin story. When Catholic Spain expelled its Jewish population under the Inquisition, it was a Muslim ruler who came to the rescue. Sultan Bayezid II of the Ottoman Empire sent his navy to Spain to evacuate the expelled Jews, issued formal proclamations welcoming them as Ottoman citizens, and threatened with death any governor in his empire who treated them harshly. He mocked King Ferdinand openly: “You venture to call Ferdinand a wise ruler — he who has impoverished his own country and enriched mine.” More than 150,000 Jewish refugees found safety in the Ottoman Empire. The city of Thessaloniki — Salonica — became so thoroughly Jewish under Ottoman protection that it was known as the Jerusalem of the Balkans. The current conflict between Israel and the Palestinians has a precise, modern, political origin: the displacement of the Palestinian population in 1948, the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, and decades of unresolved territorial and human rights disputes. To collapse this into a civilizational or theological hatred stretching back a millennium is not history. It is the erasure of history — the same erasure the essay above describes. It serves one purpose: to make the present seem inevitable, and therefore not our problem to solve.

We can and must do better.

I have been training in the martial arts for 43.

Between the two, I have spent more conscious hours attending to breath than most people spend thinking about it in a lifetime. The embouchure — that precise architecture of lips, air column, and intention — demands a relationship with breath that borders on the obsessive. The martial arts demand something similar: breath as weapon, breath as timing, breath as the invisible thread between intention and execution.

By any reasonable measure, my lungs should be fortresses.

And yet. For 35 years, every Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner who has taken my pulse has said the same thing, with minor variations in phrasing but no variation in conclusion:

Your Lung pulse is weak.

The first time I heard it, I was skeptical. The second time, curious. By the tenth time, I had stopped arguing and started listening. Because in Chinese medicine, when the same message arrives through different hands, in different cities, across different decades, you are not dealing with coincidence. You are dealing with something the body has been trying to say for a very long time.

This essay is my attempt to finally hear it.

What the Lung Pulse Is Actually Reading

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Lung pulse is not measuring respiratory capacity. It is not taking inventory of your VO2 max or the elasticity of your alveoli. Western pulmonology does that and does it very well.

The Lung pulse is reading something older and more embedded— the quality of a function the classical texts call receiving and releasing. The Lung, in its deepest classical understanding, governs the rhythm of taking in and letting go. Not just air. Everything.

The Lung is the uppermost organ, the most exterior, the first interface between the self and the world. It governs the Wei Qi — the defensive energy that circulates at the surface of the body, the boundary between inside and outside. It opens to the skin, to the pores, to the body hair — all the places where self meets world, where the interior negotiates with the exterior.

And the Lung houses the Po — the corporeal soul. The most instinctual, animal, earthbound aspect of human consciousness. The Po is the part of us that knows, in its bones, that nothing is permanent. That every form is temporary. That the inhale is only possible because of the exhale that preceded it.

The Po doesn’t speak in language. It speaks in sensation, in the catch of breath, in the collapse of the chest when something beloved is gone. It is the soul of impermanence. And it lives, literally, in the Lung.

When the Lung pulse is weak, the practitioner is not saying your respiratory system is failing. They are saying something more precise, and more demanding:

You are not letting go.

The Paradox of Mastery

Here is what 56 years of trumpet playing actually trains:

Control. Precision. Direction. Force applied through a column of air with surgical exactness. The ability to shape breath into something that can fill a concert hall, or whisper just to the bell of the horn like a secret. The embouchure is a marvel of neuromuscular specificity — thousandths of an inch matter, milliseconds matter, the difference between a tone that soars and one that cracks lives in a margin most people cannot even perceive.

And here is what 43 years of martial arts training actually trains:

Containment. Mobilization. The breath consolidated at the moment of impact, released in the kiai, drawn back in and held again. Breath as armor. Breath as weapon. The body learning to be simultaneously soft and explosive, grounded and mobile, defended and dangerous. Flowing, adaptable and expansive while being rooted into the earth.

Both disciplines, in their highest expression, are about mastery over breath. The ability to direct it, shape it, time it, deploy it.

“The breathing of the true man comes even from his heels, while common men generally breathe only from their throats.”- Zhuangzi, Book 6

Neither discipline, I now understand, trains the single function the Lung most fundamentally requires:

Surrender.

The trumpet taught me to exhale with intention. The martial arts taught me to exhale with force. Neither taught me to exhale without knowing what came next. Neither taught me to release without destination. Neither taught me the particular vulnerability of the breath that goes out into the dark and does not strategize its return.

The Po doesn’t strengthen through discipline. It opens through loss.

“A beginner cannot possibly avoid losing and defeat, so if you fear defeat you may as well not even begin. If you want to study, begin by investing in loss.” - Cheng Man-Ching

And so the paradox resolves itself, if not easily: a weak Lung pulse is not a failure of training. It is evidence of a particular kind of success — mastery achieved at the cost of surrender. A life of extraordinary control that left something essential unpracticed. The body has been keeping score.

The Metal Element and the Alchemy of Grief

In the Five Element system of classical Chinese medicine, the Lung belongs to the Metal element. Its season is autumn. Its color is white. Its emotion is grief. Its sound is weeping. Its movement is descending and contracting — the world drawing inward, the leaves releasing.

The Metal element governs a process that the ancient texts describe with a precision that still astonishes me: the transformation and release of what is no longer needed, and the refinement of what remains into something more essentially itself.

The paired organ of the Lung is the Large Intestine. Their relationship is not incidental. The Lung extracts what the body needs from air and releases the rest. The Large Intestine extracts what the body needs from food and releases the rest. The same essential verb, operating at different levels of the system, performing the same alchemical work:

Take in. Extract the essential. Release what no longer serves.

The ancient alchemists understood something that modern culture has largely forgotten: the transformation of base metal into gold was never only about chemistry. It was always simultaneously a map of inner transformation — the refinement of the gross into the subtle, the temporal into the essential, the ego’s attachments into wisdom. The raw lead of accumulated experience becoming, through the application of enough heat and the willingness to let form dissolve, something more valuable than what you started with. A spiritual tempering.

This is what grief, properly metabolized, actually does.

It takes the raw material of loss — the friend gone too soon, the version of yourself that no longer exists, the dream that didn’t survive contact with reality — and through the alchemical process of feeling it fully, releases what cannot be carried forward, and refines what can into something more concentrated, more essentially you.

When the Metal element fails — when the Lung contracts and the Large Intestine clenches and the Po retreats — this process stops. What should be released is retained. What should transform stagnates. The system begins, slowly and then not so slowly, to accumulate its own waste.

You can see it in a body. A collapsed chest. A breath that never quite reaches the bottom of the lungs. Shoulders curled inward like parentheses around a secret. Skin that has lost its luster. A voice that has flattened. Eyes that no longer shine.

You can also see it in a civilization.

Four Griefs

I want to be precise about what I know grief to be, because I think we use the word too narrowly.

The first grief is intimate.

It has a face. It arrives on a specific day and does not leave on schedule. Over the years I have lost many friends — musicians, martial artists, healers, people whose presence in the world made the world more interesting and more alive. Some went suddenly. Some went slowly as a disease slowly eroded their physical being. Some went before they had finished becoming who they were going to be, and that particular grief — the grief of the unlived life of someone you loved — carries a weight that is different from ordinary loss. It is not only about what was. It is about what would have been. What should have been.

This is the grief that teaches you, if you let it, that love is not diminished by loss. It is concentrated by it.

The second grief is the grief of regret.

This one is quieter and more dangerous because its home is the past. It lives in the conditional tense — if I had, if I hadn’t, if I had known then. It is the grief of the road not taken, and also of the road taken and leading off a cliff. It is the grief of the younger self you could not save from his own ignorance, and also the grief of recognizing that the ignorance was necessary, that the mistakes were the education, that you could not have arrived here without going there first.

Regret, unmetabolized, is a form of time travel that only goes one direction. It keeps you in a past that cannot be changed, rehearsing it compulsively, trying by the force of attention to alter an outcome that is already written. The Metal element has nothing to offer the person who will not leave the past. It can only work with what is being released right now.

The third grief is the grief of transition.

This is the one that most people never name as grief at all, and so it goes unprocessed, emerging sideways as depression or rage or a vague sense of meaninglessness that no amount of achievement seems to resolve. I see a lot of this in my clinic. If often masquerades as something else. Like someone not wanting to be seen.

I am 64 years old. I have been a professional trumpet player since I was a teenager. I have played on hundreds of recordings, toured the world many times, stood in the center of stadiums and felt the specific electricity of that — fifty thousand people and the music moving through all of them and through you simultaneously, the horn an extension of the nervous system, the breath translated into something that travels farther than breath has any right to travel.

I am still doing this. I am on tour right now.

And I am also, quietly, honestly, grieving it. Not because it is ending today. But because I am old enough to know that it will end. That the body that plays the horn at 64 is negotiating terms that the body at 35 never had to consider. That every career has an arc, and the arc has a descent, and the descent is not a failure — it is the shape of a life fully lived.

The grief of transition is the grief of letting go of an identity before you have fully assembled the next one. It is the gap between who you were and who you are becoming. This is where the alchemy becomes most demanding. Because the base metal here is not failure or loss. It is gold. It is a life’s work. And you are being asked to let it transform anyway — not because it wasn’t valuable, but because transformation is what value does when it fully matures. But that luminous space is not easy to navigate, and I believe it is that way for a reason.

The fourth grief is the largest.

It has no grave to visit and no name to speak. It is the grief of the mythology.

Most of us in this country were given a story about what America is and what it promises and what it means to participate in it. The story had beautiful elements — ideals of equality, of opportunity, of a republic that might, imperfectly and gradually, bend toward justice. We were taught the story in school, heard it in music, saw it in the faces of people who believed it with their whole hearts.

I am not interested in being cynical about this. Cynicism is grief that has curdled into contempt, and contempt is one of the ways we avoid actually feeling what we have lost.

What I am interested in is calling it out: the mythology, for many of us, is no longer holding. The institutions we were taught to trust have revealed themselves to be more fragile, more compromised, more susceptible to capture than the story prepared us for. The arc of the moral universe turns out to be neither short nor guaranteed. The city on the hill turns out to have been built on a great deal of bones that have never been fully reckoned with.

This is a grief. A real one. And it is not being processed collectively in any meaningful way. Instead, it is cycling through the body politic as rage, as apathy, as the peculiar American tendency to keep consuming and performing normalcy while something fundamental has collapsed.

The Lung of the nation is contracted. The breath is shallow. The chest is caved.

And what the Metal element teaches us — what it has always taught — is that there is no path forward that does not run directly through the grief. You cannot transmute what you will not acknowledge. You cannot release what you insist on calling something other than loss.

The mythology is not coming back. This is not cause for despair. It is cause for grief — which is different. Despair is the refusal to move. Grief is the movement itself. It is the exhale that makes the next inhale possible.

What the Lung Pulse Has Been Saying

I have spent 56 years mastering the breath and 43 years forging the body and 35 years receiving the same clinical finding from practitioners whose hands I trust. I have thought about this long enough to believe I finally understand what it means.

It means I am human. It means that mastery, for all its beauty, is a way of being in relationship with breath that emphasizes direction over surrender, intention over release, control over the particular vulnerability of not knowing what comes next.

It means that the Po — that ancient, animal, impermanence-knowing part of the soul — has been waiting patiently through all of it. Through every performance and every sparring session and every treatment room and every loss. Waiting for the moment when I would stop training the exhale and simply surrender to it.

The Metal element does not ask whether you are ready. It does not ask whether you have achieved enough, performed enough, proved enough. It does not care about the recordings or the tours or the degrees or the lineage.

It asks only one question, and it asks it in every breath:

Are you willing to let go of what this moment is, in order to receive what the next one might be?

Grief is not the enemy of a life well lived. It is the evidence of one. It is what love looks like when its object has changed form. It is the price of having been fully present for something, fully invested, fully alive to it — and then being asked to release it into whatever comes next.

The alchemy of the Metal element does not promise you gold. It promises you transformation. It promises that what you are willing to release will not simply disappear, but will change form — will become the compost of the next season, the ore of the next refinement, the breath that was exhaled and became, invisibly, the air that someone else needed.

My Lung pulse is weak.

After 35 years, I think I am finally ready to do something about that.

Not by training harder. Not by breathing with more precision or more force or more intention.

But by practicing, perhaps for the first time in my life, the one thing neither the trumpet nor the martial arts ever taught me:

The exhale without agenda. The release without destination. The willingness to let the breath go out into the dark and trust — not know, but trust — that the inhale will come.

That, I think, is what the Po has been waiting for.

That is where the gold is.

So let’s answer the question. Directly. Carefully. Without apology.

The Voting Rights Act repeal — or its gutting, depending on which legislative mechanism you’re watching this week — targets precincts, counties, and states where Black voter turnout has been rising. Not Democrat-leaning rural white counties. Not Indigenous territories, though they’re catching stray damage. The geography of disenfranchisement, if you lay it over a map of racial demographics, produces a correlation so clean it would embarrass a first-year statistics student into honesty. The architects of this policy know this. Their consultants know this. The people voting for it know this. What they’re banking on is that you either won’t say it out loud, or that when you do, the phrase “why does everything have to be about race” will be deployed like a fire suppression system — not to address the argument, but to flood it.

This is not new. It has never been new. Literacy tests were not about literacy. Poll taxes were not about fiscal responsibility. Grandfather clauses were not about protecting family legacy. They were about one thing, dressed in the administrative language of one thing else. The American tradition of racial control has always required a translation layer — something that sounds procedural, neutral, technical. “States’ rights.” “Law and order.” “Election integrity.” “Partisan redistricting.” Each phrase is a forwarding address. The mail is always the same.

What’s different now is the brazenness. The translation is getting sloppier because the translators have decided they no longer need to be convincing — they just need to be fast. Get the policy in place before the challenge reaches the court. Suppress enough votes in enough cycles that the demographic math stops mattering. This is not paranoia. This is the stated strategic logic of voter suppression, documented in consulting memos, leaked emails, and the occasional unguarded moment of candor from someone who forgot a microphone was on.

So when they say partisan, not racial — understand what that sentence is doing. It is asking you to evaluate a policy by its stated intention rather than its measurable effect. It is asking you to believe that a law which systematically reduces voting access in majority-Black districts is a coincidence. It is asking you to extend good faith to people who have spent decades demonstrating they have none to return. “Partisan” is not an explanation. It’s a translation. And a lazy one.

Then there’s the crime argument. It arrives reliably, like a second act. “What about Black on Black crime?” Deployed not as genuine concern for Black victims — if it were, these same voices would be demanding investment in the communities being destroyed by violence — but as a conversation-stopper. A way of saying: you forfeit the right to discuss your disenfranchisement until you answer for this first.

So let’s look at the data. FBI statistics show that 84% of white victims are killed by white offenders. That 88% of Black victims are killed by Black offenders. That between 2017 and 2021, Black offenders were involved in about 15% of violent victimizations of white people, while white offenders were involved in over half of all violence against other white people. Most violent crime, across every demographic, is intraracial. Proximity drives crime, not race. People commit crimes in their own neighborhoods because that’s where they live. This has been true in every community, in every era, in every country that has ever been studied.

So why don’t we talk about white on white crime? We do. We just call it crime.

Now the second charge: that Black Americans commit more crime proportionally. The raw arrest numbers do show a disparity. But here is what that argument deliberately leaves out. Black Americans are two and a half times more likely to live in poverty. Unemployment among young Black men runs roughly double the rate of their white counterparts. Research consistently shows that when socioeconomic factors are controlled for, racial disparities in crime rates diminish significantly. Poverty produces crime. Segregation produces poverty. Redlining, restrictive covenants, deliberate federal housing policy — these produced the segregation. The throughline is policy, not pathology. The disparity is a racial consequence. It is not a racial cause. These are not the same argument, and conflating them — deliberately or otherwise — is the same forwarding-address trick we saw earlier. Different envelope. Same mail.

Here is the thing about the “why does everything have to be about race” crowd that never gets said plainly enough: they experience race as a topic. Something that comes up. Something that gets raised, usually by someone unreasonable, usually at an inconvenient moment. They have the extraordinary luxury of not experiencing it as a condition — as the water they swim in, the variable that shapes everything from whether a cab stops to whether a doctor takes the pain seriously to whether their vote gets counted. When you experience race as a topic, being asked to talk about it feels like an imposition. When you experience it as a condition, being asked to stop talking about it feels like a demand that you stop describing reality.

These are not equivalent positions. One of them is comfortable. The other is true.

Which brings me to the question I anticipate. Why does an Armenian-Italian even care? Why is this your fight?

Let me tell you about Armenians

Armenia was the first nation to adopt Christianity as its state religion, in 301 AD. It is one of the oldest continuous Christian communities on earth, with ancient ties to Ethiopia — another early Christian nation, another civilization whose history and depth the Western world has systematically undervalued. My people have been on this earth, building culture, practicing faith, writing literature, for longer than most of the nations currently lecturing others about civilization.

In 1915, the Ottoman Empire began the systematic extermination of the Armenian people. What followed was the 20th century’s first genocide — a word that did not yet exist but was later coined, in part, because of what happened to us. Approximately 1.5 million Armenians were killed. Entire communities were erased. Villages that had existed for centuries were gone in months.

My grandfather escaped as a boy. A Turkish man — from the nation carrying out the slaughter — helped get the children out of his village. One person who refused to participate in the machinery of extermination. My grandfather made it out. First to Palestine then the USA. He never saw his family again. Every person left behind was killed.

I carry that story the way you carry something that lives in the bone. And what I know from it — what it has made impossible for me to un-know — is exactly what systematic erasure looks like. The administrative language that precedes it. The way a state decides a people don’t fully count. The translation layer that converts racial and ethnic hatred into procedural neutrality. “Inter-communal conflict.” “Wartime relocation.” The United States did not formally recognize the Armenian Genocide until 2021. One hundred and six years of the forwarding address.

So when I see voter suppression dressed as election integrity, I am not learning something new about how power works. I already know.

Now let me tell you about Italians in America. Specifically Southern Italians, who were not considered white upon arrival. “Negroes with straight hair” was not a metaphor — it was the actual classification deployed by American nativist science and popular culture. In 1891, eleven Italian immigrants were lynched in New Orleans after a jury acquitted them of murder charges. The mob decided the justice system had failed to do what it was supposed to do to people like them. It remains one of the largest mass lynchings in American history. Italians were segregated in parts of the South. Told they weren’t quite white enough for full membership in the American project.

Over generations, Southern Italians — my people on that side — were gradually folded into whiteness as a political category. That assimilation came at a cost James Baldwin understood better than most: the price of entry into whiteness is the adoption of its terms. You learn who counts and who doesn’t. You learn to cross the street, or look away, or stay quiet. My family paid that fare. Knowing what it cost, knowing what we went through to be here, and then watching another people face the same machinery of erasure — silence is not available to me. It wouldn’t be honest.

And then there’s the music.

I was a kid when I first heard it — the tradition that would define my entire life and give me my livelihood and, honestly, a large part of my soul. Miles Davis. John Coltrane. The blues that runs underneath everything like a root system. This is not music I appreciate from a distance. It is music that made me. It formed my ear, my sense of time, my understanding of what it means to say something true through an instrument. I have spent nearly fifty years inside this tradition as a working musician, and I am clear about where it comes from. It comes from the same people whose votes are now being called a partisan inconvenience. The same people whose history is being minimized. The same people being told to get over it.

The fruit of that tree fed me. It feeds me still. Speaking out is the absolute minimum the music and the people who created it deserves.

I know what I’m talking about not just as a matter of heritage and history, but as a witness. I toured with Queen Latifah. I was the only non-Black person in the band. I checked into the same category of hotels I’d stayed in with white bands — the same price point, the same brands, sometimes the same properties. The treatment was not the same. The speed of service at the front desk. The tone. The assumptions made before a word was exchanged. I’d seen the other version enough times to know the difference wasn’t random.

I’ve been pulled over by police with white friends in the car and with Black friends in the car. With white friends, the interaction was professional. Sometimes almost cordial. With Black friends, guns were drawn before a single question was asked. Before anyone knew why we’d been stopped, before any exchange had taken place, before any behavior had occurred that could conceivably justify it. Weapons out. On the street. Over a traffic stop.

I was the observer in those moments. I was getting the comparative data in real time, and I was furious. And I was the one with the luxury of being furious as a visitor to that reality, not a permanent resident of it. I cannot fully imagine what it costs — psychologically, physiologically, spiritually — to absorb that level of threat as a routine feature of an ordinary day. To have to prepare your children for it. To manage your own adrenaline response in the moment while also performing non-threatening so the interaction doesn’t escalate to something worse. My Black colleagues and friends have a phrase for when a white person finally clocks what’s been in front of them the whole time. They say: now you know what’s up. It lands somewhere between relief that you finally see it and exhaustion that it took this long.

But according to some, everything has changed. They should be over it by now. After all — and here comes the argument that deserves its own dismantling — they call themselves the N-word.

This is one of the laziest intellectual maneuvers in the American playbook, and it needs to be named for what it is. The reclamation of a slur by the community it was used to dehumanize is not an erasure of that history. It is a defiant act of recontextualization — taking a weapon and refusing to let it retain its original power over you. That is a psychologically sophisticated and historically documented response to trauma and oppression. It does not belong to anyone outside that community. It does not constitute an invitation. It does not mean the wound is healed. And it most certainly does not mean the systems built on the logic of that word have dissolved.

Confusing a community’s reclamation of a wound with the healing of that wound is either a profound misunderstanding of how language and power work, or it is a convenient pretense. The people making this argument are not confused. They are looking for an exit from the conversation. The word is the door they’re trying to open. It doesn’t open.

And now we get to what’s really being suppressed — because votes are the mechanism, but voice is the target.

What is distinctly, irreducibly American? Not the Constitution, which is largely derivative of Enlightenment political philosophy that England and France were working through simultaneously. Not the mythology of rugged individualism, which every frontier culture on earth has claimed. What America has produced that the world has actually wanted — has paid for, traveled to hear, built entire cultural industries around — comes almost entirely from Black America. The blues. Jazz. Rock and roll, which is blues with different shoes. Hip hop, which is the most globally dominant musical form of the last forty years. The moral vocabulary of the civil rights movement, which is the only time in American history that this country came close to living up to its own stated ideals, and which was written, preached, marched, and bled into existence by the people whose descendants are now being told their votes are a partisan problem.

James Baldwin knew this. He wrote that Americans are trapped in a history they don’t understand, and that until they do, they will be trapped in it forever. He also knew — and said plainly — that the price of the ticket for Black Americans was the construction of whiteness itself. You cannot have the myth of white American identity without something to define it against. And you cannot maintain political control for a demographic minority in a diversifying country without suppressing the voice of the majority. The math is not complicated. The cruelty follows from the math.

So. Why does everything have to be about race?

Because the data says so. Because the geography says so. Because the history says so. Because the people engineering this policy have said so, in rooms they thought were private. Because I have seen it with my own eyes, on the road, in hotel lobbies, through a car window with a gun pointed at someone sitting next to me. Because my grandfather got out of a village that was about to be erased, and I know what erasure looks like when it’s getting dressed for work.

And because — this is the part that should keep people up at night — the culture they’re trying to silence is the only thing this country has ever made that was genuinely worth exporting. They are burning the house down. The house they are burning is the one they built on someone else’s land, with someone else’s labor, and filled with someone else’s music.

And they have the audacity to ask why we keep bringing it up.

Here’s what my days currently look like: I play the show. I do telehealth consults with my patients back home between soundcheck and stage time. I’m in a doctoral program, which means research papers and case studies are open on my laptop in the hotel room at midnight. I practice the horn, at the very least a good warmup. I try to write music. I try to sleep.

Working out — real training, the kind I love, the Boxing gym, the Jiu Jitsu mat, the MMA gym — has largely gone out the window. I’m getting by on calisthenics and Qi Gong when I can grab twenty minutes. Ten years ago I would have found a way to do all of it, grinding myself to a nub in the process, wearing the exhaustion like a badge. At 64, I’m trying to make a different kind of choice. I’m trying to preserve my Jing — what Chinese medicine calls the body’s deepest vital essence, the reservoir that doesn’t replenish the way it did at thirty. I’m trying to be honest about what’s actually sustainable, as opposed to what my ego insists I should be capable of.

That tension — between what you want to do and what you can actually sustain — is what this piece is really about.

The Template Problem

My first big tour was in 1984 with Blood, Sweat & Tears. I stayed on the road with various bands almost consistently until 1998. Some tours were a month or six weeks — a set duration. Others, like with Tower of Power, were just ongoing, year in year out, sometimes thirty to thirty-five weeks a year, mostly one-nighters. You live out of a suitcase and a hotel room. You eat what’s available. You sleep when you can. And if you’re not paying attention, the road will quietly dismantle everything you’ve built in your “normal” life.

What I’ve discovered over decades of this is something deceptively simple: the choices I make in the first few days of a tour will provide the template for everything that follows.

If those first few days are bagels and cream cheese for breakfast, Philly cheesesteak for lunch, and a big bowl of pasta with bread for dinner, and a post show sugar-fest — I am spiraling downward fast. I can almost guarantee I will end the tour weighing more than when I started. My joints will feel inflamed. My cognitive function will be compromised. I’ll be running on adrenal power just to get through the schedule, drawing down on reserves that are harder to replenish at this age. The carb fog is real. The sugar induced inflammation is real. And once that template is set, the inertia of it is surprisingly hard to break — along with the will to even try.

But if those first few days I’m focused on clean proteins, vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and keeping sugar minimal — that template holds too. Almost with the same inertia, but in the other direction. I may not come home having lost weight, but I won’t have gained it. And if I maintain even a basic level of movement and my meditation practice, I might actually come home feeling better than when I left. For someone on a long tour, that’s no small thing. It’s a cumulative win, and that is the whole game.

I want to be straight about what I’m not saying. I’m not saying the template is magic. I’m not saying it always holds. This current tour is a good example of exactly how complicated it gets. The nutrition template is basically intact. The training template has been modified beyond recognition by necessity. The question I keep returning to is: does compromising one part of the template mean the whole thing collapses? And I think the honest answer is no — but only if you’re making conscious choices rather than simply defaulting to drift.

The Warm-up Principle

There’s something that happens when I take the trumpet out of the case in the morning. If I warm up carefully — connecting with my air first, getting the lips vibrating properly, finding the resonance before I ask anything technical of myself — then whatever follows has a foundation. The instrument and I are in a harmonious conversation. The playing has a chance.

But if I pull the horn out and just start playing — skipping the foundation, rushing past the connection — there’s a disconnect that follows me through the entire day. Not always dramatic struggle. Sometimes just a low-grade friction between me and the instrument that never quite resolves.

The first few days of a tour are like the warm-up. What you establish there — how you eat, how you move, how much you sleep, whether you take five minutes for breathwork and meditation or skip it because you’re tired — sets the resonance for everything that follows. This is not a metaphor I arrived at theoretically. It’s something I learned the hard way, over forty years on the road.

What works in one realm often works equally well in another because the underlying principles are usually the same. The road and the practice room are running on the same physics.

Dosage Is Everything

Chinese medicine has always understood that the difference between medicine and poison is dosage. The same herb that heals in the right amount becomes toxic in excess. The same principle governs almost everything worth paying attention to: food, sleep, training, rest, stimulation, quiet.

Too much of a thing and too little of a thing often produce the same negative result. Overtrain and you break down. Undertrain and you atrophy. Sleep too little and the body can’t repair itself. Sleep too much and the Qi stagnates. Eat too little on the road and you hit the wall in the middle of a three-hour show. Eat too much of the wrong things and you’re carrying inflammation through every performance.

The discipline, then, is not austerity. It’s calibration. Finding the sweet spot — not too much, not too little, just enough to sustain the work without depleting what makes the work possible. Goldilocks, as it turns out, was doing systems analysis. The porridge was a wise clinical decision.

This is where I’ve had to become more honest with myself as I’ve gotten older. Not just about where that sweet spot is physically, but about the entire scope of what I’m trying to sustain. The shows. Practicing the horn. Writing music. The doctoral program. My patients. My own health. At some point, if you’re trying to keep everything in play at the same level you hold yourself to, none of it gets done at that level — and burnout is a guarantee. That’s not discipline. That’s just a different kind of self-destruction.

The ego remembers being thirty-two. In fact, it still thinks it is. The body is keeping a different calendar.

The Road Will Always Offer You the Other Option

Let’s be honest about what we’re actually talking about. The road is hedonism made logistically easy. Late nights, open bars, great restaurants, no domestic responsibilities, the electric residue of a show still humming in your body at midnight. Nobody is making you go to bed. Nobody is making you eat the salad. Nobody is stopping you from making bad choices.

The tour will not punish you tomorrow for the choices you made tonight. The punishment comes later, quietly, in the form of inflammation and fatigue and a body that feels five years older than it did when you left home.

The younger version of me absorbed that punishment and barely noticed. The current version notices. Which is either a sign of decline or a sign of wisdom, depending on how you want to frame it. I’ve decided to frame it as wisdom, mostly because the alternative framing isn’t useful.

Discipline on the road at 64 is not about being the guy who goes to bed at ten while everyone else is hanging out at the bar. It’s about knowing what you’re trading and making the trade consciously. Some nights the hang at the bar is the right call — I don’t drink alcohol but the conversation, the camaraderie; the particular accomplishment of people who just uplifted twenty-thousand souls through the power of music. I value that deeply. I don’t want to optimize that away.

But I try to make that choice with open eyes, not by default. There’s a real difference between choosing to stay out and simply failing to choose to go to bed. One of those is living. The other is just drift.

And the same principle applies to every other choice on the road. The training I’m not doing right now isn’t failure — it’s a conscious prioritization. The doctoral work has to get done. The patients need care. The shows need everything I have. Something had to give, and I chose intentionally. That’s not the same as giving up. The distinction matters, at least to me.

The first few days of this tour I ate well, moved my body, and got as much sleep as the schedule allowed. The template is set — at least the part of it that’s still standing.

That’s enough. It has to be.

That’s not discipline as self-denial. That’s discipline as self-knowledge. Forty years on the road to learn the difference. I know what the opposite brings.

Shakespeare almost certainly didn’t have this in mind. But I’m pretty sure Hamlet would have understood it. There’s a particular kind of suffering that comes from being a person who has always defined himself partly through physical discipline — and then slowly, undeniably, having to renegotiate the terms.

I turned 64 in February. I’ve been a nose-to-the-grindstone guy my whole life, especially when it comes to training. For decades, arriving in any city in the world meant one thing before anything else: find a boxing gym, an MMA gym, a grappling class. Doesn’t matter what country. Doesn’t matter what time zone. Doesn’t matter that we just played a three-hour show and have a long flight tomorrow. There’s a place to get some work in, I’m going to find it.

These days, the wear and tear of doing that has begun to outweigh the benefit. The knee with no meniscus has a vote now. So do the hips, the shoulders, and roughly every other joint that has participated in four decades of martial arts, Boxing, Muay Thai, Kali and Grappling. They are all casting ballots and they are not voting for the 7am session at the local boxing gym.

The Wisdom of Less

What I’ve had to learn — and it has not come easily to a person wired the way I am — is that preservation is not surrender. It’s strategy.

Chinese medicine has a concept called Jing — often translated as essence, or constitutional vitality. It’s the deep reservoir you were born with, the fundamental resource that underlies everything: your energy, your resilience, your capacity to heal and recover. Jing is finite. You can preserve it, you can nourish it, but you cannot manufacture more of it. And you can absolutely burn through it faster than nature intended.

Every tradition that has thought seriously about longevity — Daoist cultivation, Ayurveda, even the best of modern sports science — arrives at the same conclusion. So does the old boxing adage that women make legs weak, which sounds like locker room mythology until you understand what classical Chinese medicine says about the relationship between sexual energy and Jing depletion — at which point it sounds less like superstition and more like clinical observation. The people who move well into old age are not the ones who trained the hardest. They’re the ones who trained consistently, adjusted their training appropriately, and recovered intelligently. The grind is not the virtue. The consistency is.

I’ve always been a five-to-six-hour sleep guy. My whole life. I wore it almost like a badge — a sign of toughness, of productivity, of not wasting time. What I understand now is that I was drawing down on an account I wasn’t replenishing. Sleep is not laziness. In Chinese medicine, it is the primary time of yin restoration — the hours when the body repairs, rebuilds, and consolidates what the day demanded. Shorting that process, consistently, over decades, has consequences. I have the body to prove it.

What It Actually Looks Like Now

My tour routine, at 64, looks like this: if I have a day off or two, maybe I find a jiu jitsu class or a boxing gym. But if I don’t, I use whatever the hotel has. Forty to forty-five minutes. Some cardio to warm the muscles, joints, and fascia. Some strength work. Some stretching, maybe a little yoga. And then, once or twice a day, Tai chi, Qi Gong, breathwork — honestly, at this point all three of those things have merged into one practice for me. They’re not separate disciplines. They’re the same conversation.

That’s it. And I’m finding — genuinely, not as a consolation prize — that a little done consistently over time keeps me moving and feeling good in my body in a way that the grinding never quite did. Because the grinding always had a cost I was deferring. Compound interest works in both directions.

If I’m tired, I sleep. I try to sleep as much as I can. This is genuinely strange to say after six decades of treating sleep as the thing you do when you’ve run out of other options. But I feel better when I do it. The body is not subtle about what it needs. The only question is whether you’re willing to listen.

The Real Question

So here’s my Shakespearean conclusion: whether ‘tis nobler in the soul to suffer the slings and arrows of dysfunctional and painful joints, or whether it is wiser to take yourself to bed and get a good night’s sleep — that is indeed the question. And the answer changes as you change.

The version of me that would have scoffed at eight hours of sleep and called the hotel gym “a spa not a gym” was not wrong, exactly. He was operating with the information and the body he had at the time. But the wise among us — and I’m working toward wisdom here, not claiming to have arrived — honor what is true now rather than fight to preserve what was true then.

The man who could run on five hours of sleep and find a boxing gym in any city on earth for a 7am training session is still in here somewhere. He just doesn’t run the operation anymore. The body I have now is not the body I had at thirty-two. Training it like it is isn’t discipline. It’s denial.

Every system in nature adapts or it dies. The ones that can’t tell the difference between stubbornness and strength are the ones that don’t make it.

The ego will adjust. It always does.

The body, on the other hand, is keeping score. And it has been very patient with me.
