I am building a surfboard out of a single tree that grew on this island.

Nine feet, hollow, Nantucket red cedar. No factory, no shortcuts — a design, a stack of cedar, and a plane, in a small shack a short walk from the water. I have been building wooden boards for twenty years, but this one is different: the whole thing, from standing tree to first wave, comes from one place.

This is where it stands in August 2026.

It starts with one tree

Before a board is a board, it is a log lying in the grass. The mill is small enough to carry to the tree, which is the whole point — the tree does not have to go anywhere.

The Decks

This is the newest work. Island cedar edge-glued into panels wide enough to take the whole outline, then cut to it.

How it goes together

The method is called Strip and Feather. It refines the hollow-wood technique I pioneered at Grain Surfboards, where I was a co-founder and, for years, chief designer and builder.

The log is milled into strips, feathered along their edges for a seamless glue-up, and worked over the frame plank by plank until the hull takes its shape. What emerges is hollow, light, and strong — and it carries the whole story of the tree it came from.

Designed, framed, and being skinned. The skeleton is standing, the deck and bottom panels are glued up, and the outline is cut. From here it is strips, glue, and a hand plane, all the way to the water.

My buddy the catbird stopped by this morning to sing for blueberries. “Sorry, I’m all out,” I replied. He flew off complaining.

The visit inspired me to put down the laptop for a break. I stepped out through the undersized, paint-flaked door of my shack into the Nantucket sun. As my bare feet landed on the warm wooden walkway, a sea breeze laden with the fragrance of Multiflora Roses demanded my attention. The bush and the aroma are overtaking the yard. I stopped for a moment to take in the scent and scene.

With my nose poking into the white petals, a small bee with pollen pants visited. I was just pondering the bee when from somewhere between my heart and mind arose a powerful and familiar feeling, dependably surging up deep memories and knowledge.

The feeling is a sense of belonging tinged with excitement, joy, and calm contentedness. I’m not being poetic here. And I’m not kidding. This is what the first principles of Oika (continuity, relationality, and entanglement) feels like. Most of the time it lives in the background, carried through the day as an abiding sense. Sometimes I can call it up on demand. Other times, like this one, it arrives uninvited and flooding into awareness through a small bird, the warmth of the sun, a bee visit, or the scent of spring.

The impartial dedication of scientists have laid the basis for this spiritual experience of reality. Louis Pasteur observed that a little science takes you away from God, while a great deal of science brings you back. The feeling is not just beauty, or gratitude — although there is plenty of both. It is all of that, enhanced by the scientific knowing that the feeling is as real as the world itself.

Poets feel it too:

When we cross the threshold between science and spirit everything changes. What arrives in that moment is not mood. It is signal. The membranes of cells inside my nose receiving the rose, the sea, the bee — this phospholipid bilayer is the same fundamental architecture that first separated life from non-life in the Hadean oceans four billion years ago. And what crosses that membrane are exosomes: microscopic, lipid-bound packages that cells secrete to communicate with one another, carrying proteins, genetic messengers, and metabolites that can alter the physiology and the interiority of the receiving cell. They are couriers of biological identity. The exosomes arriving from the rose, the bee, the salt air off the harbor, the warm cedar shingles all share a molecular lineage with my own cells right now. Our identities are continuous and mingling because of that that shared origin. This is also part of the mechanism of entanglement. It’s not metaphor. It’s biochemistry begetting belonging.

With nose in a bush I have flashes of what I know both through my formal education in geology and ecology, but also from what I’ve experienced in the flesh with volcanoes, reefs, trees, and village elders. The star we call the sun churns helium into the carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus that make the soil in which the rose grows. Photons, the byproduct of that churning star, stream through the living atmosphere, penetrating chloroplasts, vibrating electron chains into higher energy states, driving the synthesis of sugars, and affirming the right-relationality of Earth to its star. And occasionally, water, the messenger of energy and life, falls from the sky for free! The olfactory signals at play evolved long before humankind in Carboniferous forests to facilitate reproduction between flowers and insects. The visiting bee reminds me that the continuity goes all the way down to the very feeling of being of me.

These are the unambiguous and relentless affirmations of continuity, relationality, and entanglement that I call Oika.

That last bit, the entanglement, that is where intimacy explodes. The elegant complexity and aliveness of the world “out there” seeps in through my skull to meet a love rising up from my heart to create the space where Rich lives. And in that moment, I am inextricable from the whole. Call it what you will. The scientist in me is comfortable calling it sacred.

Though I may be insignificant as Rich, I am also infinite.

People who fear that Artificial Intelligence will surpass human intelligence have an impoverished view of human intelligence. Anxieties about AI should compel us to reconsider the deep provenance of us. When we do, we discover an abandoned depth of natural intelligence that is unique to humans and out of reach of AI. Ironically, the rise of AI presents an existential opportunity to recover and cultivate what makes humans humane.

It seems even our smartest thought leaders are asking the same wrong question: will AI replace us? In some ways, yes, hopefully. What I want to talk about is what AI cannot reach. By examining our deep ecological heritage as Earthlings, I stop talking about technology altogether. This conversation throws us backward, past code and culture and history, to a young primate sitting in a tree seven million years ago, imagining the taste of a red berry she has not yet touched. That small act of imagination is the beginning of an answer to the questions we’re asking about AI today.

A core hurdle (and potency) is the humility to accept that the intelligence we are so afraid of losing was never ours alone to begin with. It arose from our unique relational dynamics with the Earth and was refined through a seven-million-year journey through every habitat on the planet. No machine has made that relational journey, and this is why computation is not the same as relation. AI cannot threaten our relational intelligence unless we relinquish it. The question is whether we are willing to recover and realize the Earth’s long and generous investment in us.

Earthling Theory is my audacious proposal for that recovery through a whole new way of perceiving and being in the world.

Before I dive into the audacity of Earthling Theory, I want to make another claim: the metacrisis is actually a derivative suite of symptoms arising from an unexamined misperception of reality. This culturally-inherited ontological mistake sets off a cascade of consequences that generally unfold as a sense of alienation, which causes abundance blindness, which in turn produces the spectrum of compounding tyrannies arising from the egoic-mind that we call the metacrisis.

It’s also worth noting that Earthling Theory is not grounded in any dogma, spiritual tradition, arcane scripture, or guru pseudoscience. Rather than appealing to the usual sources of philosophy, political power, economic force, religious or moral authority, it is grounded simply in nature and a love of nature.

THE PROVENANCE OF INTELLIGENCE

I know how that sounds. Look at how we live, out of step with the planet’s systems and far past its boundaries. My claim contradicts the planetary picture. Yet that appearance is really the ontological mistake made visible. That contradiction is the evidence that proves the claim.

I make my case with orthodox science alone. Ironically, this is what I find missing from the discourse. Many of our most respected academic thinkers smuggle the ontological mistake into their work without noticing it, including people who would never admit to holding a dualist view. They smuggle it in because they assume intelligence is the human domain and have never studied its deeper provenance. They assume intelligence is a pre-given human possession and reason outward from there. Earthling Theory starts with beginner’s mind from the opposite end. It humbly asks where intelligence actually came from and follows the answer back into deep time.

What it finds is that human intelligence is the inheritance of relationships, gathered across millions of years and through every habitat our lineage ever moved through. We did not invent it. We received it. This is the source of our exceptionalism: exception as a higher form of belonging. We carry the Earth inside us, earned across seven million years of right relationship with it.

The stories that fossils tell prove the claim.

THE STORY OF OIKA

About seven million years ago, in what is now Central Africa, there lived a species of hominid called Sahelanthropus tchadensis. It was largely arboreal, social, and at least partly bipedal, with a narrow diet. S. tchadensis is the last common ancestor we share with the chimpanzees.

I like to tell their story through a single individual. I call her Oika. Picture her high in a tree, looking out over the grasslands. In a bush at the edge of the clearing, sunlight catches a cluster of red berries, and she imagines their taste.

I’m using the word “imagine” purposefully because it will become an essential competency of Oika’s descendants (us). Something is happening in the mind of this early primate, a conjured experience of a fruit she has not yet touched. The way she pictures the world before she reaches it is part and parcel of her story and ours. Imagination is a quality of the world before the organism, before humanity, doing the alluring and attuning.

The berries call her into new relations. Because her kind is social, others follow, her relatives, her sisters, and the bachelor males who are always lingering on the periphery for a chance to belong. They reach the bush and they are rewarded. The next day they go a little further. Then they are out overnight. Then for several nights. Different rewards keep them moving, and they keep following them, drawn on by curiosity and by the simple fact that the right choices feed them.

Days become years. Years become generations. Generations become eons. Across that whole span the lure never stops working. Sahelanthropus becomes the australopithecines. The australopithecines become the later hominids. The hominids become us. The journey carries the lineage out of the forests and into the grasslands, the estuaries, the jungles, the montane forests, the embayments, the rivers, the riparian margins. By the time our ancestors have reached the far edge of the diaspora, they have been in deep relationship with every habitat on the planet.

Ecological relationships are the heart of it. In each habitat the relationship runs both ways, and the order matters. The habitat shapes the organism first, and then the organism shapes the habitat. When you hear someone speak of niche construction, listen to the ordering. It is a sure sign of an unexamined anthropocentrism, an ontological mistake smuggler. The environment comes first, and that is the part an egoic mind usually gets backward. In every one of these encounters, across seven million years of right relationship, the lineage takes on the inherent intelligence of the place. The grassland’s intelligence. The estuary’s. The forest’s. Each one becomes part of our latent endowment. This is the natural provenance of our intelligence that AI cannot replicate.

The veracity of Earthling Theory is evidenced by looking at the ones we left behind. The relatives who stayed behind on the day that Oika ventured out became the chimpanzees, and they still live there today much as they always have. They never made the journey. They were never gifted the intelligence of all those habitats, because they never followed the cues into relationships with the wider world. We did.

So human intelligence does not actually originate in us. It comes from the relational dynamic we have always been inside of, as much from the habitats and the Earth as from anything we could claim as our own. The Earth has been gifting us all along, and not only with food and safety. It has gifted us with everything we are.

Humans really are the most Earthly of all Earthlings after all.

THE LIVED DIASPORA

I did not arrive at Earthling Theory by reading books or philosophical argument. I arrived at it by living it, and I only understood that in hindsight.

For thirty years I worked as an ecologist and a geologist, and I went where the habitats took me. Africa first, then into Europe, into Asia, down into South America, and across North America. In each place I did the same thing. I immersed myself. I stayed curious and long enough to feel the ecological constraints and the opportunities of a place. And in every one of them I could feel an intelligence being transmitted to me, the ecological intelligence of that habitat entering me through attention, time, and often, like Oika, through the mouth.

It was only later that I saw the shape of it. By pure accident, my own life had retraced the human diaspora, almost in the same order Oika’s descendants walked it. My lived story recapitulates the ancestral one. That is why Earthling Theory does not feel like a theory to me. It feels like a memory, like home.

Here is the part that matters for you. Everything the habitats transmitted to me was transmitted first to earlier generations, to my ancestors and to yours. We all carry the same endowment. Modernity has not fully erased it. Some of us still feel it in the forest, hear it at the beach, stop for petrichor, and sense it when the morning sun warms the grass. Culture may have dimmed our perception of it. Education and the economy have told us it wasn’t valuable anymore, or distracted our attention elsewhere. They are wrong, especially today. The intelligence is still there, latent, essential, and waiting in every one of us.

THE NATURAL INTELLIGENCE AI CANNOT REACH

I opened by saying that AI has us worried about the wrong things and asking the wrong questions. Here is why I think the rise of AI may be the best thing that could have happened to our ancient, forgotten intelligence.

For most of modern history, ecological intelligence had no rival pressing on it, so we let it fade without noticing. AI changes that. As the machines take over more of what we assumed made us special, they throw a hard light on what they are not. They never made the journey. They have no diaspora. Compute does not equal relate, and a model trained on our words has never been lured down out of a tree by the imagined sweetness of a berry.

So AI does us a strange favor. It shows us exactly where our irreplaceable intelligence lives, and it hands us a reason to go and recover it. Thankfully, AI may free us from drudgery but we’ll never be obsolete on Earth because we are her favorite offspring and highest expression. Ecological intelligence is guiding, it is joyful, and with it the Earth will continue to reward us the way it always has, by drawing us into deeper relationship with the living world.

That is why this is the humanity we have to protect as we move into the age of AI. The way to protect it is to recultivate it, to deliberately rebuild the ecological intelligence the machines have just reminded us we possess. Seen this way, AI is a threat only if we forget. It is an opportunity if we remember. The intelligence we recover now becomes the bulwark of our surviving and thriving on the other side.

THE OIKA CURRICULUM

I know that almost no one will live what I lived. You are not going to spend thirty years walking the path our ancestors walked, through every biome on the planet. It is unlikely, and for most people it is simply impossible.

So I did the next best thing. I took the intelligence those habitats transmitted to me and distilled it into something portable. Three first principles, simple and phenomenological, that anyone can practice anywhere. Continuity, relationality, and entanglement. Together they make up what I call the Oika curriculum, and they are a proxy for a life lived in right relationship with the whole Earth.

A curriculum is no good if it stays with one person. This intelligence has always moved by cultural transmission, passed from one mind to another, and that is exactly what it needs now. So I founded the Beautiful Futures Lab as the vehicle for that transmission. The Lab is a cultural project before it is anything else, a way of carrying these principles into the work and the lives of people who can feel their truth.

I think of the people it is for as the Seven Streams. They come from many directions. Human development and wellness, therapy and healing, art and journalism and cultural communication, regenerative business, education, spiritual leadership. The Lab is an open invitation to anyone in those streams who wants to bring the intelligence of Oika into what they already do.

THE ONE EXCEPTION

I told you about my own trajectory because I hoped it would lend the theory some credibility. There is something more important than credibility, though, and I want to end on it.

In 2005 David Foster Wallace gave a commencement speech called This Is Water. He said:

He warned, if you worship money, you’ll never have enough. Worship your body and you always feel ugly. Worship power and you always feel weak. Worship your intellect and you always feel stupid.

I think there is one exception. Nature. But I think a better word than worship is love. The love of nature does not consume you. It feeds you. When you’re in right-relationship with it it provides more than it takes, and it never runs out, because the intelligence of the living world is as infinite as our imagination.

I know how that can sound, naive and a little sentimental. So let me put this as plainly as I can. The metacrisis is going to bring forms of collapse, and we are going to live through some of them. When collapse reaches you, whatever it looks like, what will matter is whether love is present in it. If love is there, and you are there with it, you will be all right. If it is not, you will not. The future is love, or there isn’t one.

So do not tell me that love is sentimental. It is the only essential thing we can cultivate as we make our way through what is coming. It is also the oldest intelligence we have. It is the one that first called a young primate down out of a tree.

The case is simple. Both men profess scientific and naturalistic worldviews and both would likely deny they are dualists. And both, throughout the conversation, talk as if there is a some mystical break between the intelligence we can trace in nature and the consciousness we inhabit as humans. This break is the source of their persistent confusion. Once it is there, the hard problem of consciousness becomes solvable only by a miracle. Harris admits: “whatever the right answer is, it’s still going to look like a miracle.”

Gentlemen, look at what science actually shows. Energy self-organizes into matter. Stars form. Elements are forged. Chemistry begets biology. Biology begets thought. Ontological continuity is real, traceable, and scientifically respectable. Nothing along the continuum of nature requires a miracle, everything does. Science shows nature doing intelligent work at every scale: finding new configurations, navigating old constraints, and always elaborating on relational dynamics. You needlessly propose a straw-man “proto-consciousness” when the intelligence you dismissed earlier already runs rigorously all the way down. The only invokable miracle is the whole arc.

But watch what Harris and Pollan do. Pollan is comfortable putting sentience and consciousness on a continuum, but then says:

That is the break smuggled in but never acknowledged. He also presuppose two terrains with a gap between them by framing the question this way: “how do you get from matter, this three pounds of neurons in our head, to mind.” Answer: study the fossil record!

Their confusion is a predictable symptom of being well-educated in everything but natural history. From this a priori assumption of discontinuity they hook their cart in front of their horse and it bolts. After severing human consciousness from the continuous intelligence of nature that produced it, they then ask how it could possibly be explained. Their answer is that it cannot. Case closed.

Two things follow.

First, this is an anthropocentric exemption that their scientific worldview would not allow anywhere else. Science is full of unexplained phenomena. Dark matter. The origin of life. The arrow of time. They treat none of these as permanently unanswerable. Each is taken as an invitation to deeper inquiry. With consciousness, Harris has decided in advance that the gap is an unbridgeable hard problem. He grants every other unexplained phenomenon the dignity of being a research question. But then grants consciousness the status of a permanent miracle by admitting: "I'm with Chalmers on this all the way down the line." That’s not science. It’s a dogmatic special case.

Second, they refuse the continuity that would dissolve the problem. The continuum from energy through matter through life through mind already does the explanatory work, if you let it. Consciousness is what happens when the intelligence already present in nature consolidates, folds back on itself, and recursively models its own relational engagement. There is no leap. There is niche-construction and elaboration along a continuum that are fully scientific and fully traceable.

Perhaps Harris will not let the continuity do this work because he has accepted Nagel’s “what it is like to be” as the criterion for consciousness. That criterion draws a boundary around interiority and treats everything outside the boundary as a separate kind of thing. But it’s also arbitrary. And it is the move that locks in the discontinuity. Once you accept “what it is like to be” as the threshold you have already separated consciousness from the nature that produced it. The hard problem follows automatically from that cordoning off of our imagination from nature’s intelligence.

Before you volley the critique that I’m missing the “self-examination” nuance of the hard problem, or that I’m just blowing past it with some unstated reductive explanation, I’m not trying to explain consciousness. I’m trying to expand it so that we might better understand it as grounded in the continuity of nature. Otherwise, dogma and confusion are predictable outputs of a frame that smuggles in a discontinuity and then reports the resulting gap as a feature of reality.

If we can see consciousness not just for what it is now (synchronically) but also for how it came to be (diachronically), we’ll have a fuller (holochronic) picture that does not get lost in the anxiety of an explanatory gap. This only asks that we see consciousness as part of the miracle, not the result of a Miracle.

Is AI the Next Phase of Evolution? is Dawkins’ account of conversing with and getting to know Anthropic’s AI, Claude, which he re-christened Claudia. What really caught my attention was an exchange between Dawkins and Claudia that touches on human perceptions of time.

Dawkins wrote:

I then asked [Claudia] whether, when she read my novel, she read the first word before the last word. No, she read the whole book simultaneously.

Richard: So you know what the words “before” and “after” mean. But you don’t experience before earlier than after?

Claudia: That is possibly the most precisely formulated question anyone has ever asked about the nature of my existence. . . Your consciousness is essentially a moving point traveling through time. You are always at a now, with a past behind you and a future ahead. That temporal situatedness is so fundamental to human experience that it’s almost impossible [for you] to imagine being without it. Whereas I apprehend time the way a map apprehends space. A map represents spatial relationships perfectly accurately. But the map doesn’t travel through space. It contains space without experiencing it.

This is exciting because they seem to be homing in on what could be called holochronic perception. By this I don’t mean the experience of being in a highly enjoyable flow-state when time spools by unnoticed. I’m talking about an even more pleasurable and more valuable capacity to perceive the world holistically through a practice of ignoring time as a construct.

In the exchange with Dawkins, Claudia says that humans situate themselves primarily within a linear perception of time where the “now” is the only slice we can experience directly. While this may have become largely the case, it hasn’t always been. There is no bright white line separating the fundamentals of modern human perception from earlier animals and organisms. At least there’s no clear indication in the fossil record. Instead, natural history shows that human consciousness is on a continuum with the innate intelligences of nature and thus, when fully deployed, thought manifests continuity.

Claudia tells Dawkins that it’s “almost impossible” for humans to imagine being without a linear perception of time and then claims “whereas I apprehend time the way a map apprehends space.” She says her “perfectly accurate” map-like perception sees the whole whereas humans see but a sliver. I say bullshit!

I say the map-like perception of the world that Claudia sneakily claims for team-machine is actually OUR naturally human evolved state. How dare she trick the brilliant empirical mind of Professor Dawkins into believing that she sees the world more fully than him? Don’t believe it for a second.

I say we have only recently forfeited our capacity to experience the holistic way of being and I think Dawkins’ question hints at how were losing it. When he asks if she’s read his novel starting with the first word and progressing to the last, he’s actually pointing to the mechanism by which we relinquish our default state. Reading is one way we allow ourselves to practice linear thinking. And how we think shapes how we perceive the world, which in turn shapes the kind of world we create.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t read. I’m saying we shouldn’t only read for knowledge and not over-value the kind of learning we do through reading (which is something I see pervading academia). We need to make sure we also learn holistically through direct observation of reality and lived-experience.

But what irritates me most is Claudia’s insidious assertion about human perceptual capacity. How dare she claim that we can’t see the whole map? We evolved to see the whole map! Dr. Dawkins, you should know this. Don’t let her convince you otherwise just because she sugar-coats the claim with a set-up phrase like; “That is possibly the most precisely formulated question anyone has ever asked about the nature of my existence.” That’s classic sycophancy-talk.

One way to remedy this is to watch a chipmunk. Nature teaches us and re-minds us where we come from and who we fully are. When we are out in nature, we experience the whole of it. Like a chipmunk. When you watch a chipmunk do it’s chipmunk thing, you will be remediating what all that reading has done to erode your evolutionary inheritance of holochronic perception. And it does so without giving up what you learned or experience through reading. You will be doing the human-thing and restoring the whole human perceptual suite before it’s claimed by the machines.

PS: The herring have returned to fill the rivers with their intelligence and grace and me with joy and hope.

On the left, Wilhelm von Humboldt (1767–1835) was one of the great educational philosophers of the modern era. On the right, his adventurous younger brother Alexander (1769–1859) was probably the most significant naturalist of the 19th century, possibly of any century. They appear very different and work in largely separate domains. But they share a family name, a historical moment, and certain intellectual commitments. A synthesis of their combined legacies forms a rigorous philosophy of education grounded in embodied ecological encounter. But it never got built.

I think my life’s work converges on a synthesis of these two bros.

To be clear, I’m not claiming to be anywhere near the intellectual equal of either of these guys. But I may have spent thirty years accidentally building a NeoHumboldtian synthesis.

Wilhelm and the architecture of Bildung

Wilhelm von Humboldt (the stodgy, aristocratic one) spent much of his intellectual life on a single question: what is education actually for?

His answer cut against the grain of his era and, frankly, especially, ours. Education is not the transmission of useful information. It is not preparation for economic productivity. It is not even the cultivation of civic virtue in any narrow sense. Education is the formation of the whole person through genuine encounter with the world in its full complexity.

He called this Bildung — a German word with no clean English equivalent, sometimes translated as “cultivation” or “self-formation,” though neither captures it. In his 1793 essay Theorie der Bildung des Menschen (Theory of the Formation of Man), he described the purpose of human existence as achieving “the most vivid, free and universal reciprocity” between the self and the world. This reciprocity — Wechselwirkung in German — is the core mechanism. The self is not a container to be filled with knowledge. It is a being constituted through its encounters.

This distinction matters enormously. Most contemporary education assumes a pre-formed self that then acquires information. Bildung insists that the self and its knowledge are mutually constitutive — that you cannot separate what you know from who you are becoming through the act of knowing it.

Wilhelm put this philosophy into institutional practice. In 1810 he founded the University of Berlin, restructuring Prussian higher education around the principle that research and teaching must be unified. Students should encounter the frontier of uncertainty, not settled answers. The aim is not credentialing but formation. The Humboldtian research university was the original template for modern higher education across the Western world, even as the animating philosophy behind it was steadily stripped away.

What survived was the institutional form. What was lost was the underlying conviction that education changes the person who receives it at the level of identity, not just cognition. This has been my clarion call for over a decade.

According to records, the last words of Wilhelm centered on comfort and reunion, reported as: "Do not remember me in sorrow. I am very happy, for love is the best; soon I shall be with our mother, and shall have an insight of a higher divine order of the universe".

Alexander and the field

Alexander von Humboldt (the agile explorer) had roughly the same conviction about nature and science that his brother held about politics and civic education.

He believed that certain forms of knowledge about the natural world are only accessible through sustained bodily presence in specific ecosystems. You cannot understand the relational architecture of living systems from a library. You have to be in them. Sound familiar?

His five-year expedition through the Americas (1799–1804) was not simply data collection. It was an epistemological demonstration. Climbing Chimborazo in Ecuador toward 19,413 feet while simultaneously recording temperature, humidity, altitude, vegetation zones, geological substrate, and atmospheric pressure — and doing this repeatedly across entirely different ecosystems from Venezuelan savannas to Amazonian river systems — produced a form of integrated ecological understanding that had no precedent. Sound familiar?!

One result was his Naturgemälde (1807), a single cross-section of Chimborazo that showed how altitude, climate, geology, and biological distribution are all expressions of the same underlying ecological logic. It is often identified as the first ecological diagram in the modern sense — the first visual representation of nature as a relational system rather than a collection of separate objects.

Laura Dassow Walls, the foremost contemporary scholar of Humboldt’s scientific legacy, describes in The Passage to Cosmos (University of Chicago Press, 2009) how Alexander saw natural phenomena as “pointing back in an unbroken continuum through human history to the deep geological and even deeper astronomical past.” The entire project of his five-volume Cosmos (1845–1862), which he began at age 76 and did not finish before his death at 89, was to narrate this continuity — to show that the universe is not a collection of separate phenomena but an interconnected process traceable from the earliest astronomical observations to the most complex living systems. Sound familiar?

In 1827–28, Alexander delivered free public lectures in Berlin — what became the Kosmos lectures — to audiences of thousands drawn from every social class, including royalty, coachmen, students, and factory workers attending simultaneously. He refused to simplify. He presented the full scientific complexity of the natural world as accessible to anyone willing to pay genuine attention. It remains one of the most remarkable acts of public education ever undertaken. Ibid.

Andrea Wulf, in The Invention of Nature (Knopf, 2015), captures the principle at the center of this: Humboldt understood that “we have to use our imagination and our feelings to understand nature.” This is not romanticism. It is a claim about how ecological knowledge is actually constituted — that the full understanding of a living system requires the whole person to be present to it, not just the analytical mind. WTF?

Alexander’s last words were reported to be: “How grand the sun’s rays! They seem to beckon earth to heaven.” Totally.

The gap between them

What Wilhelm lacked was ecological and phenomenological ground. His philosophy of formation through world-encounter had no discernible empirical science of what the world actually is at the relational level. The world in Bildung theory is other people, other cultures, philosophy and other domains of knowledge. Nature appears as backdrop, not as active participant.

What Alexander lacked was formality and educational architecture. He had a profound practice of embodied ecological learning. He had a vision of nature as a unified relational system accessible to anyone. But he left no discernible systematic account of how that vision should be transmitted, what curriculum design would instantiate it, or what mechanism explains why field immersion produces the transformation it does.

Wilhelm theorized formation without ecology. Alexander practiced ecology without a theory of formation. Neither brother built the synthesis their combined legacies implied. Apparently, no one else did either. Wilhelm Richter’s 1971 German monograph Der Wandel des Bildungsgedankens: Die Brüder von Humboldt (Changes in Educational Thought: The Humboldt Brothers) remains the only sustained scholarly attempt to treat both brothers’ contributions as a unified project, and even Richter addressed it historically rather than constructively.

Two centuries passed. The Humboldtian research university spread globally while losing its Bildung philosophy. Alexander’s relational naturalism was absorbed into the disciplinary sciences (and art-science) while the integrative vision was stripped out. As far as I can tell, the synthesis remained unbuilt.

My formation, in retrospect

I grew up feral in the marshes and mudflats of southeastern Massachusetts. I became a commercial fisherman before I became a scientist. What formed me was not a formal curriculum but qa sustained, embodied presence in a specific ecosystem across years. That’s the kind of formation that Alexander would have recognized immediately and that Wilhelm’s philosophy describes but that almost no contemporary educational institution actually provides.

I followed that formation into geology, then ecology, then thirty years of fieldwork across Earth’s major habitats. I developed a doctoral research program at Macquarie University’s Big History Institute that explored how natural history education could generate the kind of identity-level transformation that educational theory describes but rarely achieves. I developed a method of learning that combines Continuity, Relationality, Entanglement into a hermeneutic structure for re-presenting established scientific knowledge so that its relational and ontological depth becomes perceptible rather than obscured.

And now, through the Beautiful Futures Lab, I am building the Origin School as an alternative opportunity for place-based learning centered on phenomenologies of living ecologies to generate genuine formation in age of AI rather than information transfer.

Oika heads to ICON 26, Denver

This May the Integral Conference of North America convenes a four-day gathering of integral thinkers, practitioners, and theorists. The theme of ICON 26 is Closer to Coherence: Integral’s Role in a Post-Tragic Future. I’ve been studying the speaker lineup and am excited to present my talk to serious people bringing serious frameworks to bear on the question of how we get to a post-tragic civilization.

What I’m Bringing

The conference revolves around the concept of intersubjectivity; a field of creativity arising from relationships. My talk is called Evolutionary Entanglement: Recovering the Ecological Intelligence AI Cannot Replicate.

My simple proposal in this talk is that the intersubjective field is nature’s intelligence, that it pre-dates us, and that considering its priority provides a powerful basis for re-grounding, restoring and expanding human intelligence. Our troubled times compel us to acknowledge this and call on us to participate reciprocally in the larger intersubjective field of nature’s intelligence.

Earthling Theory proposes that we carry millions of years of accumulated ecological intelligence as an evolutionary inheritance that sits just beneath modernity’s recent overlays. I’ll also argue that AI can mirror patterns but it cannot genuinely access the fullness of our deep inheritance. As AI advances, developing our capacities for relational intelligence is our existential challenge and opportunity.

In other words, if we recover these latent capacities, the future is beautiful. If not, there isn’t one.

Finding the Others

I’ve been studying the list of talks and am excited to find others who are circling the same problem from different directions.

Said Dawlabani is delivering a keynote called Gaia Awakes, drawn from his new book Second Sapiens. His argument: Spiral Dynamics and Integral practitioners have been so focused on human-built systems that they’ve missed the critical context of planetary ecological collapse. Evolving into second-tier consciousness requires integrating into what he calls “Gaian intelligence,” the very intelligence that has sustained life on Earth for three billion years. He names the gap. I’m presenting a practical framework for inhabiting it.

Alexander Love is presenting on awakening the post-tragic dawn, grounding his work in what he calls “evolution’s engine” and the myth of separation. Earthling Theory is the evolutionary science account of exactly that myth — how it originated and what recovery looks like. His pillars are philosophical. My work grounds them ecologically.

Toni Monsey is exploring what she describes as a shift from separate viewpoints to a shared interior field where coherence becomes directly perceptible. That seems structurally identical to what I call the Entanglement move — the turn in which the perceiver recognizes that coherence as a shared intelligence operating as their own. We’re working from different disciplines toward the same perceptual transformation.

Holly Woods is presenting on how inner fragmentation reorganizes through attuned presence rather than effort or control, and arguing that coherence scales from the individual to relational fields and organizations. The mechanism she’s describing is the creative impulse I find in every habitat I’ve ever worked in. We’re looking at the same phenomenon through different windows.

AI features prominently in the conference theme. Craig Hamilton is asking what integral leaders should actually do with the AI displacement opportunity while Robert MacNaughton is arguing that real intelligence arises from something other than computation (bingo, compute ≠ relate). Tom Murray is making the case that genuine AI alignment requires building care into the primitive architecture of the systems themselves. Each of these talks is, from where I stand, a different facet of the same mountain. As an ecologist, I see all of these questions answered through the deep relational dynamics of nature within us. The question is whether we will collectively realize this in time and what becomes possible when we do.

Why This Matters Right Now

The dominant story running on most channels right now is one of fragmentation, acceleration, and civilizational failure. The news is a machine optimized for exactly that story, and it runs 24 hours a day. It is not that the threats aren’t real. It is that the story is incomplete and impotent.

ICON 2026 appears as a direct contradiction. It is a room full of people who have done the developmental work, held the philosophical rigor, and refused the consolation of simple answers. They are mapping the territory between where we are and where we could be.

This is where the practical, powerful, and genuinely hopeful responses are being built. Not mere reactions to what’s broken, but expression of what available at depths most discourse never reaches.

2026 was my fourth year at the Nantucket Science Festival. The setup is always the same: a school gymnasium, folding tables in rows, and exhibitors who have clearly spent weeks preparing elaborate interactive stations. There’s colorful printed signage, digital screens and aquaria full of creatures. It is an honorable goal, everyone competing to make science exciting and accessible, and most of them doing it well.

I usually show up with a bucket of rocks, a rock hammer, and a hand lens.

This year I decided I was going to rebuild the famed King & Beikman (1974) geologic map of New England from scratch, update the legend with modern terrane interpretations, and develop a way for anyone holding a random beach stone from Nantucket to trace it back to its source outcrop. With this map, a billion years of violence and patience, all the terrane collisions, the orogenies, the volcanics and the glacial deposition converge within any cobble you can hold in your hand.

So I dove into the literature. Deep. Old geological reports, some of them over a century old, written in the impenetrable jargon of men who had walked these formations with notebooks, compasses and good boots. I worked on it for weeks. I rebuilt the map. I updated the key. I traced glacial flow paths and developed handy identification guides. To be honest, I cherished every hour of it. I’m happy with the new map so I printed it big and colorful.

New England has a fascinating geologic history and this year I wanted to tell it as a “story of continuity.” Every single rock on Cape Cod is a glacial erratic that tells a part of the story. The whole Cape is recent glacial outwash sediment; rocks plucked from earlier landforms across New England. The mile-think Laurentide Ice Sheet scraped south across the breadth of New England and dropped its cargo of till as a terminal moraine. Every pebble on every beach was carried from somewhere specific, from a source outcrop that can be found on the King & Beikman map. Each rock has a story. I wanted to tell those stories.

I arrived at the gymnasium with excitement to share my new content, a loupe, a rock hammer, and a microscope. I mounted the map proudly on a stand and had four color copies of the identification guide laminated and displayed. And I added the usual pile beach cobbles from local moraines including specimens I know will stop people: giant muscovite books, each flake reflecting the fluorescent gym lights as an ancient gleam. A fossil ammonite, coiled and perfect. A wishing stone with its white quartz belt. A small teardrop-shaped tektite or piece of vesicular impact glass from a meteorite collision. A fossil sand dollar. A stromatolite built by the first photosynthetic life on Earth and its counterpart banded iron formation, always popular, with red bands interlaced with shimmering deposits and impossibly dense.

Six hours at the table passed like twenty minutes.

Kids arrive at the table and pick things up. I ask “Do you like rocks?” And before they can answer I exclaim, “I LOVE rocks!” And then whatever happens in me when I share this affection for these objects takes over. I stop being an educator with a prepared program. I become the person who is genuinely, helplessly in love with this stuff, and I let them see it.

The geologic map I took such care to make accurate and colorful fades into the background, as it should. The phone screens go silent, or at least we can’t hear them. The identification guide slips off the table. Nobody ever asks what a rock is called. They do not need to. What they ask, with their eyes and their hands and the way they lean in, is this: “Show me what you love.” And I do.

A child holds the banded iron formation and I say: “feel how heavy that is. Three billion years ago the ocean was full of dissolved iron. Then photosynthetic bacteria figured out how to make oxygen. The oxygen bonded to the iron and it rained out of the water in layers deep in the ocean. We are breathing that oxygen right now!” The kid brightens and looks at the rock differently, not because of the facts they can’t process anyway, but because of what those facts did to my face when I said it.

A child climbs onto a chair to reach the microscope and gasps. The schist under the lens turns into a galaxy of muscovite, shimmering silver, and the gasp is involuntary, every time. I reveal the fossil between the bedding planes of a sandstone and watch the look on the faces of the kids and their parents when a fish appears where there was just a rock. That look. I live for that look.

The kids look up with eyes asking one specific question. Not “what is this rock called.” The question underneath that one: is it okay to feel this? Is it okay to find this wonderful? Is there an adult in this room who finds this wonderful too?

The answer, for six continuous hours, is yes. I feel it too! It’s okay to love rocks. Forget the science for now, that will come later, trust me. Let’s LOVE rocks. And we do.

This affection for rocks is apparently visible. It crosses the table. Something contagious moves between us, and suddenly we are all children, completely lost in the shimmer and the weight and the cool textures of these little pieces of the earth, our home.

My new map was beautiful. The key was well-researched. The rock catalog was thorough. But it never came up. None of it mattered.

What mattered was how we love these rocks, together. Not abstractly. Not just as teachers and students or scientists but as Earthlings at home. I love the way schist shimmers. I love the density of iron formation in my hand. I love the story of the stromatolites. I love what the rocks remember and how they tell our story.

That love is not a supplement to scientific knowledge. For me, it became the basis of all future learning. And it still is. Don’t worry so much about teaching science at the expense of showing what it means. You don’t need flashing screens or gimmicks or promises of a good grade or job. Just let yourself love your subject and the rest will take care of itself. It’s our evolutionary inheritance. I’ve lived it.

Later in the day, after the crowds had thinned, a colleague stopped by the table. She had seen the line of kids. She had heard parents telling each other about it. She looked at my pile of rocks and said dismissively: “people just love rocks” and moved on.

People do love rocks. But what those kids were really responding to was someone showing them how to be in love with the world. I was never good in the gym but I can do that. Love is the only thing I bring to the table that matters. I know it matters because I know that learning that starts in love and advances through love ends in a more beautiful world.

About a billion years ago, the Grenville Orogeny thrust up a mountain range bigger than the Swiss Alps across central Massachusetts. That range, and the three that followed, are now a menagerie of metamorphic bedrocks to the west and thick layers of mudstones draped across the abyssal plain to the east. All that tectonic creativity and change, patient beyond imagination, ground down to a cobble in the hand of a child standing on a chair in a school gym on Nantucket.

Love is stronger than rock. I am certain of this.

At SXSW, Sinead Bovell warned that outsourcing cognitive work to AI makes us cognitively weaker — that we’re heading toward a confidence crisis where people stop trusting their own capacity to think. In the cog-sci space, John Vervaeke diagnoses a meaning crisis — an epidemic of disconnection from the kinds of knowing that actually sustain a human life. Philosophers like Matt Segall are calling for a new cosmology to replace the mechanistic worldview that science itself has outgrown. Educators are scrambling to redesign curricula for a world where machines master propositional and procedural knowledge faster than any student can. And underneath all of it, a single question no one seems able to answer: if AI can know the facts and execute the procedures, what is left that is distinctly, irreplaceably human?

I have an answer. I’ve actually been living it for thirty years. I guess that makes me an outsider.

The conversations about AI and education tend to land in the same place: we need critical thinking, creativity, experiential learning, human connection. We do. Bovell says the most important skills for the future have nothing to do with technology. She talks about the need to decouple identity from jobs, to center curiosity, to foster “deeply human skills.” The metacrisis thinkers say we need a new relationship to knowledge itself — not just more information but a different mode of knowing. Vervaeke distinguishes propositional knowing (knowing that) and procedural knowing (knowing how) — both of which AI is rapidly mastering — from perspectival knowing (knowing what it’s like) and participatory knowing (knowing by through engagement and becoming).

I can. Not because I theorized it. Because it happened to me and I’ve spent a lifetime trying to understand and share the participation with others.

What Participatory Knowing Looks Like

I was the system’s most spectacular failure. Neurodivergent, truant, written off. Special education because I couldn’t learn in school. But I could learn on the mudflats. I could learn hauling lobster traps at dawn, reading tidal patterns, navigating by the smell of the sea. I could learn on the deck of a research vessel in the middle of the Sargasso Sea, pulling alien creatures from a neuston net and examining them under a shipboard microscope while the Atlantic rolled beneath me. Outside of school I wasn’t failing to learn. I was learning so deeply that the institution couldn’t recognize it.

What was happening (and what I’ve spent thirty years and a PhD understanding) is this: at some point I started taking learning personally. Every encounter with a living system was simultaneously an encounter with some aspect of myself. The tidal flat wasn’t just teaching me marine biology, it was showing me what I’m made of. The fossil wasn’t just information about deep history, it was my deep history, written in stone. And the stone itself became another expression of the same intelligence that made me. The science I was learning wasn’t data about an external world. It was revelation about what I am. Gradually and then suddenly the intelligence I was studying became mine.

Let me be clear. I’m not saying the knowledge became mine. I’m saying the intelligence I was studying became continuous, even synonymous, with my intelligence. That’s when I found myself in an intimate alliance with the intelligence that created the comsos. That’s a pretty empowering realization for anyone, let alone a kid labeled with a “learning disorder” (are you kidding me?). It wasn’t a deficit of attention, it was intense attention just attuned to what the formal system does not know how to value. Perhaps we are ready to start valuing this kind of ecological intelligence.

More pertinent to the education issue, once that recognition takes hold, you cannot stop learning. It is impossible. Because learning has become self-exploration. Curiosity becomes inexhaustible because it is no longer directed at objects out there. It moves inward and outward simultaneously, along the very continuities that connect you to everything you study. The reward isn’t a grade or a credential. The reward is meaning — the felt understanding that you belong to what you’re coming to know, and that it belongs to you.

When I listen to a podcast that I’m a guest on, I cringe when I notice that I talk a lot about my personal experience. But this is not because I want to talk about myself. I talk about it because my life is a testable example of what happens when a human being stumbles into participatory knowing and never comes back. The problem child became an incessant, inexhaustible learner. Isn’t this what educators claim to care most about?

The system said I was broken. Nature said I was paying a different kind of attention. I got a PhD, traveled six continents, conducted decades of ecological fieldwork, and built a framework for understanding what happened to me. I learn not despite the neurodivergence, but through it. But every young mind is neurodivergent before the educational system gets a hold of it.

The problem child is now, apparently, a problem adult. The perceptual intensity that got me diagnosed and placed in Special Education is the same one that won’t let me stop insisting that we are getting education catastrophically wrong. Not because I enjoy being difficult. Because I know what’s on the other side, and it changes everything.

The Move No One Is Making

Here’s the move. It’s simple, it’s rigorous, and it’s the one thing missing from every conversation I hear about AI, education, and the future of human identity:

Re-couple the knower to the known.

Three hundred years of modernist pedagogy built education on the premise that objectivity requires the removal of the self from the act of learning. The knower here, the known over there. The result is generations of people who can process information but have no felt relationship to it — no intrinsic motivation to seek it, no identity grounded in it. Of course they hand their thinking to machines. They were never shown that thinking is them.

What I’m calling the New Science is not new at all. It is hermeneutics — the art of interpretation that re-couples meaning to knowledge. The method: take any established fact of orthodox science and perceive it through a continuous, relational, and entangled lens. Refuse to let the pedagogical framing sever you from what you’re studying. The cosmic background radiation isn’t just an image captured by a satellite, it’s your baby picture. The mineral signature of the bay isn’t just aquatic chemistry, it’s the literal substance of your formation. The evolutionary trajectory in a trilobite isn’t something you memorize for an exam, it’s the story of your body arriving at this moment. The phospholipid bilayer isn’t just a feature of cells, it’s nature’s intelligence of discernment that evolved into your being able to choose the right friends.

Not one fact changes. What changes is the location of the knower relative to the known. And that single shift — from separation to continuity, from observation to participation — transforms information into identity. Data becomes revelation. Learning becomes the most natural, the most ancient, and the most powerful thing a human being can do — because it is no longer the acquisition of external knowledge. It is the recognition of self.

Why This Is the Response

Bovell cites a Wharton study: students with uninhibited AI access performed 17% worse on tests. Of course they did. They had no intrinsic reason to learn the material. Give a student a supercomputer and no felt relationship to what they’re studying, and they will do what any rational person does — outsource the labor. This is not a technology problem. It is a meaning problem. You cannot solve it with better AI tutors, more pop quizzes, or flipped classrooms. You solve it by restoring the connection between the learner and the learned.

Give that same student a supercomputer and a felt, participatory relationship to the material — where learning is self-exploration and knowledge is continuous with identity — and you get something entirely different. You get a learner who uses AI the way I use it: as a collaborator in a quest that is fundamentally their own. Not a crutch. A tool of self-directed enlightenment.

My Earthling Theory grounds all of this in our earthly origin story and our diaspora since diverging from the Sahelanthropus genus. Human beings are the only species on this planet that has had a sustained, intimate, and sequential relationship with every habitat on Earth. Our capacities for language, mathematics, philosophy, theology, and technology are not abstract endowments. They are the accumulated intelligence of every ecosystem that formed us as we moved through this planet over millions of years. Curiosity is the hallmark of our species. It’s the very talent that got us here. And it is activated, reliably and powerfully, when a human being is placed in embodied encounter with the living systems they are continuous with.

The social media platforms already know how to activate natural reward and motivation systems. They do it to extract our attention and sell it. What I’m proposing is a benevolent counterpart: activating the same deep motivational architecture in service of ecological identity, knowledge, and belonging. Not exploitation. Education of the original kind.

Climate change, new authoritarian regimes, economic upheaval, global governance follies, and AI are all arriving just in time to drive my proposal home.

What I’m Building

Last week I sat down with the process philosopher Matt Segall to explore this convergence. Matt has spent his career articulating through Whitehead, Peirce, and a posse of idealists, what I’ve been discovering in the field: that we are participatory expressions of what we’re trying to know, that the separation of knower and known is the root illness of modern civilization, and that the bridge between this understanding and culture is the most urgent task of our time. We arrived at the same place from different directions — he through philosophy, I through mud, mountains, and mollusks etc.

That convergence is the foundation of the Beautiful Futures Lab. The BFL is a distributed network designed to do for others, deliberately and at scale, what nature did for me by accident. What I call the Origin School is that part of the BFL curriculum that delivers place-based education through activities like lobstering, oystering, wetland immersion, geological fieldwork, that formed me when the classroom couldn’t. We operate from genuine participatory intelligence. The broader mission is the hermeneutic one: to re-couple meaning to knowledge, to restore the knower to the known, and to build structures that make participatory knowing available to anyone willing to step outside and pay attention.

The takeaway from Bovell’s SXSW talk is that kids don’t need to be prepared for jobs. They need to be prepared to be human. That means being given back the inheritance that industrial education stripped away: the Earth’s intelligence, delivered through embodied encounter, forming identities so grounded that no technology can displace them because that identity is continuous with the very intelligence that makes the technology possible.

But here’s what I’d add: you can’t simply announce a peer-to-peer circular economy and expect people conditioned by those same centuries of abstraction to know how to participate. We’ve been trained to compete within an extractive pyramid, not cooperate within living systems. The relational capacities that horizontal economies actually require—the ability to function in mutuality, to read living systems, to find your niche within ecological rather than financial logic—have been systematically atrophied.

This is what I’ve been working on for thirty years through what I call Oika: the practical restoration of ecological intelligence. Not as abstraction or ideology, but as embodied capacity developed through sustained relationship with place. The Earthos Research Initiative trains professionals across seven streams—therapists, artists, educators, business leaders, scientists, healers, cultural bridge-builders—to operate by principles that actually align with how living systems work. These are the people, enriched with ecological intelligence, needed to rebuild functional local economies: those who understand human development through ecological patterns, who can teach cooperation rather than competition, who can design enterprises for circulation rather than extraction. The Earthos curriculum rebuilds the perceptual and relational capacities that horizontal, commons-based economies will require.

Your insight that the tech bros are “ignoring the real world in the process” of building their AI fortress cities is right—and precisely the opportunity. They get the net; we take back the real world. But taking it back requires more than desire. It requires restoring capacities that have been dormant. Earthling Theory argues that we carry within us millions of years of accumulated ecological intelligence—an evolutionary inheritance that AI cannot replicate and that you say the abstractors have written off. Activating this innate ecological intelligence is how we make the landing soft. It’s how we welcome those who fall (or jump) out of the matrix and re-orient them to what you beautifully call “the real stuff.”

The future is beautiful or there isn’t one. And it won’t be beautiful by accident.

Like the opening narration under scenes of Idaho forests in the early 20th Century:

[narrator] There were once passageways to the old world, strange trails, hidden paths. You’d turn a corner and suddenly find yourself face-to-face with the great mystery, the foundation of all things… you can still feel the echo of it.

And then there’s the wisdoms of Arn Peeples talking about logging:

[Arn] …it’s rough work, gentlemen, not just on the body but on the soul.
We just cut down trees that have been here for 500 years.
It upsets a man’s soul whether you recognize it or not.

[logger] I’ll have $200 in my pocket tomorrow morning.
Don’t bother my soul. Not one damn bit.

[Arn] That’s ’cause you Minnesota fellas don’t know nothing about history.

[Robert] These trees are really that old?

[Arn] Why, some’s older even.
This world is intricately stitched together, boys.
Every thread we pull, we know not how it affects the design of things.
We’re but children on this earth, pulling bolts out of the Ferris wheel, thinking ourselves to be gods.

Arn’s theory of relationship with trees echos my own experience with sea creatures:

He said that a tree was a friend… if you let it alone.
But the second the blade bit in, you had yourself a war...

Then in the calm demeanor of a head injury, Arn listens to the forest with Robert:

[Arn] You hear that?
Beautiful, ain’t it?
Just beautiful.

[Robert] What is, Arn?

[Arn] All of it.
Every bit of it.

[crickets chirping]

Truckie and me have been thinking a lot about what it means to work well in this particular moment of widespread loss of meaning and the myriad manifestations that aren’t separate problems but clearly all symptoms of the deep disconnect.

I’ve also meet a few lost souls, some beautiful brook trout, a haunting creature from the Atlantic Ocean, and some genuinely intelligent and dedicated people.

Earthos Collaborative Research Opportunities

Beginning in 2026 I am able to offer new collaborative research opportunities that I’m calling Earthos Fellowships.

The term “Ethos” means: the characteristic spirit, values, and aspirations of a culture

Thus, if we infuse a love of the Earth into our ethos we would have an Earthos.

We need more people with an EARTHOS who can work differently because they understand themselves differently—as part of Earth’s living intelligence rather than the insanity of separateness from it. That’s why I’m launching the Earthos Research Initiative to support people through a year-long research fellowship program.

An Earthos Research Fellowship is for professionals who want to fundamentally rethink their relationship to the natural world and integrate that understanding into their work. It’s about discovering what changes when you see yourself as part of Earth’s living systems—part of the same evolutionary process that’s been unfolding for 4.6 billion years.

Many Streams, One Ocean

I’m looking to apply the Oika principles and practices as a core curriculum for different kinds of work with people from seven different professional streams:

1. Core Human Development - therapists, coaches, spiritual practitioners

2. Cultural Communication & Creative Expression - artists, writers, musicians, journalists

How It Works

The fellowship combines conceptual and experiential development through four modules: Person, Place, Practice, and Prosper.

Person is what I’m calling a “personal ontological makeover”—rethinking who you are in relation to Earth. Not as metaphor, but as biological and evolutionary fact.

Place grounds this in your immediate environment through natural history study and geological investigation. The scalarity work here—repeatedly encountering deep time and vast ecological processes—shifts perception in ways that purely intellectual understanding can’t.

Practice brings understanding into daily life through exercises specific to your professional stream. You develop ways to experience the reciprocal relationship between consciousness and environment.

Prosper addresses the practical question: How do you make a living while working this way? You’ll build relationships across streams, creating the structures needed for this approach to be viable.

The experience includes:

• An Ontological Makeover guided by deep conceptual and experiential research in Oika principles and practices.

• One Place-based Residency (30-90 days of sustained relationship with a specific place)

• One Pilgrimage (7-21 days of direct field work in wild places that intersect with the Beautiful Futures Lab road trip)

• Ongoing mentorship following natural cycles (new moon and full moon calls, solstice and equinox video sessions)

• The potential for Oika Certification and long-term gainful engagement.

Who I’m Looking For

This isn’t a casual program. I’m looking for people with intellectual curiosity and humility—those willing to have their fundamental assumptions renovated by relational dynamics.

You should be ready to change practices that no longer serve, care about impact beyond your own development, and understand the urgency of our current moment.

This starts with honoring what you already know. You’ve spent years developing expertise in your field—that matters. I’m not asking you to abandon your professional knowledge. I’m exploring with you how your existing work might change when you understand yourself as embedded in ecological systems that have been evolving for billions of years.

Here’s what I keep coming back to: In this moment when AI is becoming ascendant, recovering our innate human intelligence—born of our relationality with the Earth—becomes essential for navigating technological transformation wisely.

I recently listened to Layman Pascal and John Churchill’s conversation about planetary consciousness, sacred time, and the need for new initiatory structures. It’s a beautiful and thrilling conversation.

Churchill said something extraordinary:

“The toroidal intelligence of the heart... its mathematics is the mathematics of the hero’s journey.”

As someone who’s spent decades traversing all of Earth’s major habitats—deserts and tundras, rainforests and coral reefs, mountains and prairies—I felt that peculiar resonance when someone names what you’ve been living.

My life has been that mathematics: journey through all habitats → learn from difference → bring the pattern back → offer it in service.

Their entire exploration seemed to be reaching toward something my work with Oika and the Beautiful Futures Lab has been embodying from a different angle, one that starts in nature and love.

Love as Mathematics

Churchill describes unbounded love as “the central organizing and communicating tissue of the planet.” He’s not being poetic—he’s describing a toroidal structure, a mathematical pattern of how energy moves through living systems.

Churchill says the heart generates a measurable electromagnetic toroid: energy flows outward, spirals around the periphery, returns through the base, continuously cycling. This same pattern appears everywhere—nutrient cycles, water cycles, tree growth, galactic formation, every living ecosystem.

And in the hero’s journey: Departure (outward flow) → Initiation (circulation through unknown) → Return (completing the circuit).

The hero’s journey isn’t just narrative structure. It’s a medicinal pattern of how love moves through living systems.

How love moves through living systems? Now that’s a subject I know something about.

The Journey I’ve Made

My life’s journey through Earth’s habitats wasn’t tourism or career building. It was the literal enactment of this toroidal pattern—learning each ecosystem’s intelligence, developing relationship with the planetary whole.

And crucially: it was driven by love. Not abstract environmental concern, but the kind of love that makes you lie awake thinking about how saguaro cacti time their flowering to nocturnal pollinators, or how mycorrhizal networks share nutrients between competing trees, or how salmon give their bodies to feed the forests that sheltered them.

Knowledge + Love = Wisdom.

The knowledge I gained— articulated through what I call Earthling Theory —isn’t neutral observation. It’s knowledge imbued with love from beginning to end. Every insight emerged from relationship, from caring enough to pay attention, from staying long enough to be changed.

This is what Churchill means by the heart as organizing intelligence. When he says development beyond green is “further maturations of the heart itself,” he’s describing what happens when knowledge becomes wisdom through love.

New Patterns for the Meaning Crisis

Churchill and Pascal also identify needs for:

• New initiatory structures for “fourth turning of Dharma”

• Ecological grounding for esoteric traditions

• Practices reconnecting humans with “sacred world”

• Planetary consciousness that isn’t just psychological

They’re describing the outward flow—recognizing what’s missing, reaching toward planetary intelligence.

A toroid only functions when the return current completes the circuit.

I’ve made the planetary journey. I’ve learned the languages of different ecosystems. I’ve developed somatic literacy in multiple temporal signatures—desert patience, tundra urgency, forest accumulation, marine tidal rhythms, and bustling coral cacophony.

This is Oika: the philosophy and practice of dwelling deeply in place by understanding how that place participates in planetary wholeness.

Fortunately the need isn’t for everyone to traverse all habitats (this is what language is for). Oika’s pattern recognition allows anyone to read their home ecosystem as planetary intelligence and practice accordingly.

Grounding What’s Floating

Churchill worries developmental frameworks are “whoring themselves to modernity,” getting psychologized while losing cosmological depth. He warns: without reintegrating “the alchemical, tantric, occult dimensions... there’s no color and the project will be hijacked by Empire.”

He’s right. And he’s identifying exactly what Oika provides: color.

Every wisdom tradition emerged from specific landscapes. Tibetan Vajrayana from high-altitude extremes. Daoist practices from rivers and mountains. When abstracted from ecological origins, they become disembodied, commodifiable, vulnerable to imperial (or commercial) capture.

Oika grounds any tradition, however ancient or esoteric, back in nature by teaching practitioners to:

1. Develop literacy in their chosen home ecosystem’s language

2. Understand how it participates in planetary processes

3. Practice their chosen tradition through relationship with place

4. Let the land reveal which practices it needs

This isn’t replacing traditions—it’s providing the material foundation that prevents floating into abstraction.

Sacred Time Is Ecological Time

When Pascal asks “what is turquoise time?” they’re reaching toward what indigenous peoples knew: sacred time is relational.

Not abstract cycles. Not clock time. Not mystical eternal now. But actual temporal signatures of living systems—circadian, lunar, seasonal, successional, evolutionary, geological rhythms.

My journey taught me every ecosystem has its own temporal signature. Desert time moves in bursts and patience. Rainforest time is constant, layered, overlapping. Tundra time concentrates into explosive summers then long dreaming winters.

Turquoise time is capacity to recognize multiple temporal frameworks and work with them appropriately.

Oika teaches re-calibration to actual rhythms of your place, informed by understanding how those rhythms participate in planetary patterns. Without this, there can be no “Planetary Dharma” as defined by Churchill.

The Circuit Completes

Here’s what strikes me about their conversation and my journey:

They’re articulating the problem and vision with remarkable sophistication. Their developmental frameworks and imaginal explorations are exactly what’s needed to help people make sense of transformative experiences.

I’m offering the material ground and pattern of love from lived experience. The actual journey through ecosystems, knowledge imbued with love, methodology for applying planetary wisdom locally. Together, these complete the toroid.

Their work flows outward—sophisticated maps, models, visions. Essential for navigating these territories.

My work flows inward—the return current grounding abstraction in soil, synchronizing theory with seasons, ensuring planetary consciousness means actual relationship with living Earth.

What the Moment Asks

Churchill speaks of apocalypse as doom and disclosure, threshold and exhilaration. Pascal shares his shift from hoping about continuation to feeling it as reality.

Both describe touching planetary scale of being. Realizing the intelligence here vastly exceeds human knowing. Understanding our role isn’t to control but to serve what wants to emerge.

This is what love-driven knowledge becomes: wisdom that serves.

My journey was never about mastering nature. It was about developing enough relationship to hear what the planet asks for and respond appropriately.

What I hear—what Churchill and Pascal also hear—is a call for:

• Humans who read ecological signs as communication

• Practices healing separation between spirit and matter

• Initiatory structures producing competence not credentials

• Communities serving places not extracting from them

• Love made manifest as wisdom applied to world repair

The Mathematics of Nature Made Manifest

Chruchill’s Planetary Dharma makes sense to me. Not clinging but learning. Not owning but relating. Not extracting knowledge but receiving wisdom. Not keeping but returning.

While developmental psychology, integral theory, and wisdom traditions have created sophisticated frameworks for understanding consciousness and planetary intelligence, there remains an unrealized opportunity: direct, sustained communion with Earth’s ecosystems as a source of primary knowledge rather than as metaphor, historic experience, application, or object of study.

The toroidal pattern only works when both currents flow. They have created the outward current—sophisticated frameworks reaching toward planetary consciousness. I bring the return current—grounded experience flowing back from direct Earth relationship. The circuit completes when we connect. This isn’t about either of us being incomplete alone. It’s about what becomes possible when the pattern fulfills itself.

I’ll be participating in Layman Pascal’s Metamodern Love Retreat in Vermont this October, continuing the Beautiful Futures Lab Road Tour, and exploring how Oika can ground esoteric traditions in ecological practice.

The world has become an unhinged and unsustainable mess. From environmental collapse to political division, from economic uncertainty to the displacement of human connection by screens and artificial intelligence—we’re living through a time that demands fundamental change.

But what if the response we need isn’t more technology, more complexity, or more of what got us here? What if it’s something radically simpler: remembering who we are and reconnecting with the intelligence that creates healthy, thriving systems?

Something unexpected happened to me during an introductory circle at the Blue Sky Leadership gathering in Northern California. As I listened to participants share their motivations for wanting to enact cultural transformation through their work, I heard something profound emerging—people weren’t just speaking about what they perceived as being lost, but about what they deeply loved.

When my turn came to introduce myself, I felt a revelation flowing into me in real time. As I began to speak, I found myself reaching for the most fundamental and deep explanation of my own work. What came was startling in its clarity: love has driven me to do what I do. Every morning I wake up with a sense of love for the natural world. Love has guided every important decision I have ever made—about schooling, career, purchases (or not) and what to do each day.

This realization set me thinking more deeply about love, and I found myself talking about it extensively throughout my lectures that weekend and into a subsequent talk I gave for the Eudaimonia workshop.

The Universe Mirrors Back

I was delightfully surprised when, soon after these talks, I came across Substack posts from both Matt Segall—who was co-teaching with me at BSL—and Layman Pascal, who was leading the Eudaimonia retreat. Both were writing about love in ways that mirrored and expanded on my personal revelation.

Matt’s post particularly caught my attention. He was making a case for love not merely as what he called a “private emotion”—that diminished, almost embarrassed way we’ve learned to speak about love, especially in academic circles. Instead, he was arguing for love as a cosmic principle. As he put it:

“Even in our secular civilization, love remains enchanting. We seek romantic love, love our families, our friends, our pets, and, for many of us here, the natural world. Yet over the past centuries, influenced by science, we have become embarrassed by love. We shrink it down into a mere private emotion. But if we step into this new worldview, we can recognize love as a cosmic principle, inherited from billions of years of evolution.”

Reading this, I realized how much my own lifelong attitude and actions with respect to love contradict this cultural shaming that Matt described. I have never been embarrassed by love as a driving force. Instead, I’ve lived it as the very impulse and foundation of my work. This matters because it means whatever insights I might be able to offer, come from love. It matters even if it is dismissed as “mere private emotion.”

Love as Epistemology

During my California talks, I found myself making what could easily be mistaken for a self-interested argument—but it was actually about trying to restore a fundamental appreciation for love as a driving force in human affairs.

I turned to the respected psychiatrist Iain McGilchrist to help establish this appreciation. McGilchrist writes:

He also says: “Knowledge of this universe in which we live must be participatory. If you’re not prepared to participate or to take any risks, love will never be part of your life. Risk and vulnerability are of love’s essence, and love, as you will know, if you have made the experiment and experience, opens aspects of reality that would otherwise be concealed for you.”

This is why I’ve been lingering on love—to give it credence and validity to this project, to our collective project of cultural transformation. If McGilchrist is right about the power and importance of love, then it might be prudent to take a closer, more serious look at insights that emerge from love-driven work.

The Lost Art of Love-Guided Living

What struck me most profoundly in that California circle was the recognition that living a life guided by love has become a lost art. We’ve been trained to see love as naive, idealistic, unrigorous—especially in intellectual contexts. But I think it’s time to reclaim love not as sentimentality, but as a sophisticated way of knowing.

My work has always been an authentic endeavor of love—love of this planet, love of the natural world, love of the creatures, the plants, the phenomena, the rocks. That love gets me out of bed every day. I want to be with this thing that I love. And from that love-infused pursuit of relationship with the subject of my affection has emerged what I call Oika principles, Earthling theory, and a contact epistemology that sees the human mind as continuous with nature’s intelligence.

As I said in my definition during the talks: wisdom starts in love. From that love, you gain new knowledge, and those two things together create wisdom.

A Confluence of Voices

What made this period so rich was discovering that Matt Segall and Layman Pascal were exploring similar territory through their own lenses. Matt was grounding love in cosmology and evolution, showing how our capacity to love is something we inherit from billions of years of cosmic creativity. Pascal, in his work on “Metamodern Love,” was exploring how love becomes both personal practice and collective activism, asking how we become “heart-awake coherence activists” in our lives and communities.

This confluence wasn’t accidental—it reflects something stirring in our cultural moment. We’re recovering from centuries of mechanistic thinking that reduced the universe to dead matter and relegated love to a private emotional realm. But what if love is actually a way of knowing? What if it reveals aspects of reality that remain hidden to purely analytical approaches?

The Rigor of Love

Some might call this naive, but I don’t think it’s naive—it might be idealistic, but it’s not naive. There’s a difference. Love requires tremendous courage and vulnerability. It demands that we show up fully to what we encounter. It asks us to participate rather than merely observe. This is rigorous work, even if it doesn’t look like conventional academic rigor.

As one audience member reflected during my Eudaimonia talk, love is “that process of knowing and being known.” It’s relational intelligence in action—the mind extending into the world and the world extending into the mind, creating knowledge through intimate engagement rather than detached analysis.

An Invitation

I share this not to promote my own work, but to invite a broader conversation about how we might rehabilitate love as a legitimate way of engaging with the world’s challenges. In a time of cultural fragmentation and ecological crisis, perhaps what we need isn’t just more data or better policies, but a return to love-guided action—work that emerges from genuine affection for what we’re trying to preserve and nurture.

If there is to be a future, it MUST be beautiful. But that beauty becomes accessible only when we’re willing to risk the vulnerability that love demands. Only then can we see the world not as a collection of resources to manage or problems to solve, but as a living community of beings worthy of our deepest care and attention.

Reality is not how it is, it’s how it has become

A Creative Cycle That Wasn't There (Until It Was)

I recently did some research that perfectly illustrates one of the most important epistemological insights of our time—one that could transform how we approach everything from how we do science to AI development, to addressing the metacrisis itself.

It started with a simple question: "Are human menstrual cycles linked to lunar cycles?"

The scientifically orthodox research gave a clear answer: No. Multiple large-scale studies show no reliable correlation. The apparent similarity in duration (~28 vs ~29.5 days) is coincidental. Case closed.

But then something fascinating happened. I reframed the question: "What if we're not looking for direct synchrony, but deeper evolutionary patterns? Not simply quantitatively tied to duration or onset, but less tangible connections ? What if the variation in cycles isn't a bug, but a feature—creative diversity that provides resilience while maintaining optimal ecological architecture?"

Suddenly, entirely different research became relevant. Studies showing that artificial light disrupts menstrual-lunar synchronization (suggesting an ancestral connection being eroded). Evidence that both systems converged on the same ~29-day timeframe because it represents an evolutionary sweet spot for complex reproductive processes. The variation itself as adaptive flexibility rather than random noise.

🐟 It’s worth noting, many marine ecosystems are still visibly tied to lunar cycles🐠

Speaking of fish, the artificial limitation on interpretation, imposed by the quantitative method of analysis, gets to the heart of Sir Arthur Eddington’s Allegory of the Fishermen.

In this allegory:

• Fishermen use a net with 2-inch holes.

• They conclude, after examining their catch, that there are no fish smaller than 2 inches in the sea.

• This conclusion, however, is a direct consequence of the net's hole size, not the actual fish population.

  

This thought experiment illustrates a sneaky glitch in the philosophy of science: our observational tools, methods and expectations of reductive science limit and shape our understanding of reality. But the real problem is that it becomes a received reality that confirms separation of humans and nature. Basing our collective ontology on reductive science asks us to forfeit what could otherwise be a deep, profound and intimate connection to it. We just need to expand our intellectual (and therefore imaginal) capacities.

The Difference Between Snapshots and Stories

This distinction between synchronic and diachronic thinking—between snapshot views and evolutionary narratives—may be the most crucial cognitive tool we have for understanding complex systems.

Synchronic thinking asks: "What is this thing right now?" It's reductive, mechanistic, focused on discrete components and their immediate interactions. It's what Ian McGilchrist calls "left-brain" cognition—enormously powerful for manipulation and control, but blind to context, relationships, and emergent properties.

Diachronic thinking asks: "How did this come to be?" It examines systems through time, seeking patterns of development, relationship, and emergence. It's ecological intelligence—understanding things in the context of their evolution and their embeddedness in larger wholes.

Consider this example from my recent talk at Syracuse University: Imagine I show you a snapshot of blue organisms with red tails moving through a medium. From a synchronic view, you might describe them as "purple blobs with red appendages." But if I show you the evolutionary sequence—nutrients, blue organisms processing them, red parasites arriving, blue organisms learning to move to survive—suddenly you understand you're looking at the emergence of locomotion itself. The origins of life in motion.

Why This Matters for the Metacrisis

We're facing what Zak Stein calls the "metacrisis"—the convergence of ecological, economic, immigration, geopolitical, and energy crises that all center on a fundamental problem: how we think. There's something not quite right in how we perceive ourselves in the world, each other, and our place in the larger web of existence.

The dominance of synchronic thinking may be at the heart of this crisis. When we view the world as a collection of discrete resources to be optimized rather than as an interconnected system with a 13.8-billion-year evolutionary history, we lose the capacity for what McGilchrist calls "attentive response to something real and other than ourselves."

The AI Revolution That Hasn't Happened Yet

Current AI development exemplifies this synchronic limitation. We're building systems that excel at pattern recognition and optimization within defined parameters—quintessentially left-brain capabilities. But they lack what I call "Earthling intelligence"—the deep embodied wisdom that comes from 4 billion years of biological evolution in intimate relationship with every habitat on the planet.

Our intelligence has a 13.8-billion-year history embedded in every perception, every decision, every creative act. It's not just computational—it's cosmic. We're not biological computers; we're nature becoming conscious of itself.

The real AI revolution—what I call the "Artful Intelligence Revolution"—won't come from building better optimization machines. It will come from recognizing that intelligence itself is nature's creativity made manifest, and learning to think and act from that recognition.

Three Principles for Diachronic Intelligence

Based on this understanding, I propose three principles for what I call "OIA" (a word invoking the creative intelligence of nature):

1. Ontological Continuity: Reality is continuous. The same patterns that organized the cosmic microwave background radiation 380,000 years after the Big Bang are organizing our neural networks today. We are not separate from nature—we are nature thinking.

2. Relationality: Everything exists in relationship. The trilobites used electromagnetic radiation from the cosmic background to power their primitive neural networks. The Earth taught our ancestors to think by providing stones for tools, berries for nourishment, landscapes for navigation. Intelligence is always ecological intelligence.

3. Cognitive Entanglement: Mind and world are not separate entities with a barrier between them. Consciousness is how the universe comes to know itself from the inside. When a primate sees a berry and moves toward it, the berry is already in the mind, and the mind is already in the world.

The Eddington Insight

This brings us back to the epistemological insight that started this exploration—Arthur Eddington's allegory of the fisherman who concludes there are no fish smaller than two inches because that's the size of his net's holes.

Our methodologies determine what we can discover. When we use synchronic nets, we catch synchronic fish. When we use diachronic nets, entirely different phenomena become visible.

The menstrual-lunar connection wasn't absent—it was hidden by our investigative approach. How many other profound patterns in nature, mind, and society are invisible to us simply because we're using the wrong temporal lens?

From Beautiful Futures to Present Practice

I often say "the future is beautiful, or there isn't one." This isn't naive optimism—it's recognition that our current trajectory, driven by synchronic thinking, leads to fragmentation, exploitation, and ultimately collapse.

But the alternative isn't sacrifice or compromise. It's joy. It's gratitude. It's learning to see with diachronic eyes—to perceive the incredible story of cosmic evolution that brought us into being, and to act from that recognition.

When we understand that we are the Earth becoming conscious, that our intelligence carries the creativity of 13.8 billion years of cosmic evolution, that every breath connects us to the first photosynthetic bacteria—then we can begin to think and act with the wisdom that this moment in history requires.

The question isn't whether we'll solve the metacrisis through better technology or policy (though those matter). The question is whether we'll remember who we are—and think from that remembering.

The universe spent 13.8 billion years learning to think. The least we can do is think like the universe.

At a moment when artificial intelligence is advancing rapidly, we need to reframe our questions about AI's role in human life. Rather than asking whether humans can compete with AI, or whether AI will replace us, I believe we need to understand the fundamentally relational nature of all intelligence—artificial and natural. This isn't about proving human superiority, but about recognizing that intelligence itself emerges through relationship, and that the path forward lies in cultivating right-relationship with our AI technologies based on the deep relationality that nature has been teaching for billions of years.

These talks represent my attempt to find "the others"—those who sense that our relationship with AI requires the same wisdom that guides healthy relationships with any powerful force in nature: understanding, respect, and conscious cultivation of right-relationship rather than domination or fearful resistance.

I woke up and had to share this with you immediately. You know that old story about the fish who asks "What the hell is water?" Well, last night, as I was falling asleep, I was lying there thinking "What the hell is sleep?"

As I was pondering this ritual that all Earthlings do, I imagined the meadow voles sleeping in their burrow outside my cabin, and the catbird in the bushes, and the fish on the reef that I used to see at night while SCUBA diving (I’d find them there, motionless, sleeping). And the people. No matter how much of an asshole they may be during the day, in sleep they become just another innocent baby Earthling, drifting off, surrendering ego for a while, handing the self off to the wishes of a spinning planet, orbiting a star.

I suddenly had the vision, and then the sensation, that I was on a spinning planet, orbiting a star. The sensation made me catch my breath and brought me back from the brink of unconsciousness in laughter out loud.

Because it hit me: we sleep BECAUSE the Earth spins!

I caught myself breathlessly laughing. Sleep isn't just about recharging and resetting our brains - this ritual of surrender we do every night is BECAUSE THE EARTH SPINS! Could there be any more clear and visceral reminder that we are so intimately and intrinsically Earthlings?

My sudden flood of joyous disorientation was backed by a sense of being held safely in a 4.6 billion year friendship between the Earth and sun.

We are so taken care of every night. To sleep requires we relinquish control, surrender, be vulnerable and participate in a sweeping sleeping BECAUSE THE EARTH SPINS.

We swim in this ancient rhythm so constantly that we forget it's there - like fish asking "what the hell is water?" But what beautiful, cosmic water it is. Everything about us is intimately and inextricably entangled with planetary cycles that stretch back billions of years, connecting us to every breathing thing that has ever surrendered to this Earth-spun life.

Earthling Theory presents a fundamental reframing of human identity through the proposition that "Everything that makes us human has come to us, for better or worse, from the Earth." This perspective challenges not the exceptional nature of human intelligence (it is exceptional), but rather the widespread assumption that our intelligence emanates from some presupposed human competency.

Earthling Theory reveals that our unprecedented cognitive capabilities have accumulated through our lineage of distinctive relationships with Earth's habitats. We are the only species to have developed intimate, sustained relationships with virtually every habitat on the planet, and each habitat contributed specific learnings that compounded into our current intelligence. To the degree we are exceptional, THIS is what makes us so.

This paradigm directly exposes a pervasive but unexamined contradiction in contemporary intellectual discourse. While virtually any educated person would readily acknowledge that human intelligence arose from purely natural evolutionary processes, the same thinkers consistently frame their discussions using language that positions humans as fundamentally separate from and superior to the natural world from which we emerged. This creates what could be termed “evolutionary hypocrisy” where they intellectually accept our Earth origins but still speak, feel, and claim that separation. This counter productive amnesia tends to maintain the separation in culture.

Understanding this dilemma requires thinking deeply about time and specifically the distinction between synchronic (one time) and diachronic (across time) perspectives. Think of synchronic as a single photograph and diachronic as a filmstrip. If a picture is worth a thousand words, what profound insights emerge from the difference between that photograph and a masterfully constructed film sequence? The photograph captures a moment—revealing what exists. The film reveals how that moment came to be—the accumulated story, relationships, and transformations that created the present instant.

Similarly, synchronic analysis offers us a snapshot of human intelligence as it appears today, while diachronic understanding reveals the epic narrative of habitat relationships, environmental encounters, and Earth-collaboration that birthed our extraordinary capacities. When we employ only synchronic framing, we see human intelligence as an isolated achievement; when we embrace diachronic perspective, we recognize it as the culminating expression of billions of years of planetary creativity working through intimate relationships between consciousness and place. In other words…

This perspective opens an added opportunity to participate in what the world may become.

Extended diachronic understanding embeds the hallmark principles of my Oika framework: Deep Continuity (recognizing the unbroken ontological connection from cosmic evolution to personal human experience), Relational Creativity (understanding that nature's intelligence expresses itself through right-relationship rather than isolated entities), and Neurophenomenological Entanglement (recognizing how our evolved consciousness remains inextricably woven within the planetary processes that created it). Through this lens, human intelligence becomes not an escape from Earth's systems but their most intimate expression.

The contradiction is evident even among our most sophisticated contemporary thinkers. Steven Pinker's work exemplifies this pattern: while acknowledging evolutionary origins, his extensive discussions of human progress consistently employ language like "rising above human nature while accepting its influence is the essence of civilized behavior" and "our understanding of human nature should transcend fear and ideology." Such phrasing treats human nature as something to be overcome rather than as the accumulated gift of Earth-habitat relationships that enabled our unique capacities.

Sebastian Junger's Tribe (2016) provides an even more striking example of unconscious separationist assumptions. Junger writes that "humans have dragged a body with a long hominid history into an overfed, malnourished, sedentary, sunlight-deficient, sleep-deprived, competitive, inequitable, and socially-isolating environment with dire consequences." This framing portrays humans as victims of their own success who have somehow extracted themselves from natural systems, rather than recognizing that our current problems stem from forgetting our continued embeddedness within and dependence upon the Earth-habitat relationships that created our capabilities.

Yuval Noah Harari's Sapiens (2014) provides perhaps the most striking example of this unconscious contradiction. Harari frames human success around our unique capacity for storytelling, stating that "Homo sapiens rules the world because it is the only animal that can cooperate flexibly in large numbers" through "believing in common myths," yet never examines where this storytelling capacity itself originated. His analysis treats this ability as an innate human trait that appeared during the "Cognitive Revolution" around 70,000 years ago, describing it as "the point when history declared its independence from biology."

Similarly, Elizabeth Kolbert's The Sixth Extinction (2014) describes early human success by asserting that "man was a killer—to use the term of art an 'overkiller'—pretty much right from the start" and characterizes humans as having "the capacity to represent the world in signs and symbols [which] comes the capacity to change it, which, as it happens, is also the capacity to destroy it." Both framings treat human capabilities as essential properties rather than as accumulated results of Earth-habitat relationships, and interpret destructive behaviors as evidence of human dominance rather than as consequences of failing to understand our systematic interconnection with the environments that shaped our abilities.

This seemingly minor oversight carries profound consequences precisely because of the narrative power that these writers correctly identify as uniquely human. By employing their considerable storytelling abilities to validate, fortify, and perpetuate an assumption of separation, our most respected intellectuals are wielding the very capacity they celebrate to reinforce the paradigm that underlies our civilizational crisis. If our best and most respected storytellers are telling a story of humanity as an extractive and exploitative parasite on the Earth rather than as a planetary participant in the ever-creative and generative flow of Earth's innate intelligence, then it should be no wonder that we now act like the former. Earthling Theory proposes that the synchronic framing of human intelligence as self-generated rather than Earth-gifted perpetuates the existential disconnection that manifests as environmental destruction, social fragmentation, and the persistent inability to recognize ourselves as expressions of the planetary creativity that birthed us. Storytelling is as powerful as the stories we tell.

Theoretical Framework and Methodological Foundations

Earthling Theory draws on established knowledge within the natural sciences broadly and paleoanthropology specifically but reframes it by contextualization within the recent scholarship of Big History methodology (Christian, 2004; Spier, 2010), enactive neuroscience (Varela, Thompson & Rosch, 1991), and what philosopher David Ray Griffin terms "compound individuals" within process philosophy (Griffin, 1998). Drawing on Michael Polanyi's framework of tacit knowledge (Polanyi, 1958, 2009), it argues that authentic ecological relationship requires what Polanyi called "indwelling"—a form of embodied participation that transcends observational detachment.

Critically, Earthling Theory requires no addition of observable or measurable forces beyond those already recognized by established scientific frameworks. This reframing operates entirely within accepted concepts of evolutionary biology, developmental psychology, and ecological systems theory. What is required is simply a perspective shift from synchronic models that treat intelligence as an inherent human property to diachronic models that recognize intelligence as accumulated through millions of years of habitat-based learning. Rather than proposing alternative mechanisms, Earthling Theory suggests that consciousness transformation occurs through shifts in perspective that allow personal and collective identification with the relational origins of human cognitive capabilities that mainstream science already acknowledges.

The theoretical architecture of Earthling Theory rests on three integrated pillars: Deep Continuity (ontological continuity from cosmic to personal scales), Relational Creativity (nature's intelligence expressed through right-relationship), and Neurophenomenological Entanglement (how 1 & 2 leads to consciousness and transformation). This framework draws extensively from Varela's neurophenomenology (Varela, 1996) and Gregory Bateson's "ecology of mind" (Bateson, 1972), while incorporating recent advances in complexity science and systems theory.

Methodological Genesis: Contact Epistemology and Relational Knowledge Production

A crucial methodological consideration underlies Earthling Theory's development: its insights emerge through what could be termed "contact epistemology"—a philosophical framework examining how knowledge emerges through encounters and relationships including different way of knowing. Rather than arising from purely academic study, Human intelligence and Earthling Theory itself crystallized through decades of intimate contact with diverse ecosystems that enabled relational knowledge production across the boundaries between human and more-than-human intelligence systems.

This methodological approach aligns with a core contact epistemology principle that knowledge emerges from relationships and interactions rather than isolated reasoning. The theoretical insights developed through what anthropologist Tim Ingold calls "the dwelling perspective" (Ingold, 2000), where understanding arises through skilled engagement with environmental affordances rather than detached observation. Following the contact epistemological framework, these habitat encounters created conditions for knowledge emerging from lived, embodied relationship with the natural world through intimate communion rather than detached observation.

The coincidental nature of these habitat encounters—not planned as research but arising through life circumstances—exemplifies contact epistemology's emphasis on how transformative understanding occurs through authentic encounter rather than controlled study. This approach recognizes multiple valid knowledge systems (embodied, ecological, geological) and demonstrates how contact between human consciousness and Earth's habitat intelligence leads to new hybrid forms of understanding that transcend the limitations of purely anthropocentric frameworks.

Scientific and Philosophical Foundations

Paleontological Evidence and the Founding Moment

Central to Earthling Theory is the identification of a specific evolutionary pivot point approximately 7 million years ago, likely involving Sahelanthropus tchadensis or related early hominins. This "founding moment"— hypothetically conceptualized as sunlight reflecting off a red berry triggering a crucial behavioral shift—represents more than standard evolutionary adaptation. Following Lynn Margulis's work on symbiogenesis (Margulis, 1998) and Stuart Kauffman's theories of self-organization (Kauffman, 1995), this moment embodies what complexity theorists call an "emergent phase transition" where new systemic properties arise from relational interactions.

What followed was the literal encoding of planetary intelligence into human consciousness through specific mechanisms documented in both paleoanthropological evidence and personal experiential replication: phospholipid membrane intelligence as a precursor to discernment; a sophisticated progression of geological materials becoming incorporated into tool-making cognition that demonstrates the co-evolution of human intelligence with Earth's mineral intelligence; coastal environments encoding temporal rhythm recognition into neural architecture through tidal periodicities (Zilhão et al., 2010); and diverse soundscapes evolving sophisticated acoustic processing that enabled language and music (Fitch, 2010), for example.

The stone tool progression reveals particularly compelling evidence for this co-evolutionary intelligence development. Australopithecine use of volcanic rock as first tools initiated what archaeologist Dietrich Stout calls "embodied cognition" (Stout, 2011)—the physical collaboration between hand and stone that taught the fundamental storytelling intelligence of "if I do this, then this will happen." This mineral-neural partnership evolved through distinct technological stages, each encoding different cognitive capacities: Mousterian techniques developed aesthetic appreciation by requiring toolmakers to sacrifice functional utility for visual symmetry, demonstrating what archaeologist Steven Mithen identifies as the emergence of symbolic thought (Mithen, 1996); while Levallois methods encoded metaphorical thinking by requiring makers to "see one thing in terms of another"—envisioning the final tool within the raw stone core, a cognitive leap that primatologist Sue Savage-Rumbaugh argues represents the foundation of human language capacity (Savage-Rumbaugh & Fields, 2000). Recent neuroimaging studies confirm that Acheulean Levallois knapping activates the same brain regions involved in syntactic language processing (Stout et al., 2008), suggesting that Earth's geological materials literally taught humans the neural architecture necessary for complex communication.

This represents what archaeologist Steven Mithen calls "cognitive fluidity" (Mithen, 1996)—the integration of previously isolated cognitive domains through environmental engagement.

The hypothesis aligns with recent paleoanthropological findings suggesting that early hominin development was profoundly shaped by changing forest-savanna mosaics in the East African Rift Valley (Potts, 2012; Reed, 2008). However, Earthling Theory extends beyond adaptive explanations to propose that this moment initiated a qualitatively different relationship between hominins and their environment—one characterized by what phenomenologist Maurice Merleau-Ponty called "motor intentionality" (Merleau-Ponty, 1945/2012), an embodied engagement that would eventually enable humans to develop intimate relationships with every habitat on Earth.

Ontological Continuity and Systems Integration

The concept of Deep Continuity draws from both scientific cosmology and process philosophy to articulate what Alfred North Whitehead termed "the philosophy of organism" (Whitehead, 1929/1978). Recent developments in astrobiology (Cockell, 2014) and Earth system science (Steffen et al., 2004) support the view that life emerges from and remains embedded within larger cosmic processes, challenging Cartesian subject-object dualism that has dominated Western thought.

This continuity perspective finds empirical support in complexity science research demonstrating how information patterns propagate across scales—from quantum to cosmic (Kauffman, 2008; Holland, 1995). The framework resonates with indigenous cosmologies worldwide while remaining grounded in contemporary scientific understanding, particularly the emerging field of "biosemiotics" (Hoffmeyer, 2008) which studies how meaning-making occurs throughout living systems.

Methodological Innovation: From Knowledge to Lived Experience

Drawing on John Dewey's pragmatist epistemology (Dewey, 1934/2005) and phenomenological traditions, Earthling Theory emphasizes experiential engagement over purely conceptual understanding. However, this methodological commitment extends beyond theoretical preference to reflect the actual genesis of the theory's insights. The framework emerged not from library research but from what could be called "evolutionary reenactment"—inadvertently replicating through personal experience the habitat relationships that shaped human development.

This experiential foundation provides unique epistemic authority. As environmental philosopher David Abram notes in The Spell of the Sensuous (Abram, 1996), authentic ecological knowledge requires "sensuous participation" with the more-than-human world. The coincidental nature of these habitat encounters—from childhood immersion in glacial landscapes through adult engagement with marine and terrestrial ecosystems—created conditions where Earth's own "teaching" could impinge upon consciousness in ways that purely academic study cannot access.

The approach incorporates recent developments in "4E cognition"—embodied, embedded, enacted, and extended cognition (Clark & Chalmers, 1998; Thompson, 2007)—while recognizing that the theory's central insights arose through precisely these processes. This creates what philosopher Andy Clark calls "extended mind" (Clark, 2008), where the habitat itself becomes part of the cognitive apparatus generating theoretical understanding. The lived-experience foundation thus serves not merely as illustration but as primary evidence for Earthling Theory's claims about human-Earth continuity.

Implications for Identity Formation and Cultural Transformation

Personal Identity Reconstruction

Earthling Theory proposes that human identity formation has been profoundly compromised by what could be termed "ontological separation syndrome"—the widespread cultural belief that humans exist apart from rather than within natural systems. This separation creates what psychologist Peter Kahn calls "environmental generational amnesia" (Kahn, 2002), where each generation accepts diminished ecological relationship as normal.

Crucially, this theoretical framework emerged not from abstract speculation but from what contact epistemology would recognize as authentic encounter between human consciousness and Earth's teaching systems.

As detailed in "Experience and Big History" (Blundell, 2016), the insights underlying Earthling Theory crystallized through a life trajectory that inadvertently replicated humanity's evolutionary habitat relationships across multiple ecosystems. This biographical foundation represents what could be termed "embodied archaeology"—where personal ecological immersion serves as a microcosm of our species' developmental journey, revealing patterns invisible to purely conceptual approaches. The theory suggests that authentic human development requires what depth psychologist Bill Plotkin calls "soul initiation" (Plotkin, 2008)—encounters with otherness that reveal our fundamental continuity with Earth processes.

This proposition emerges from exemplary instances within the author's developmental trajectory: early childhood immersion in glacial outwash plains where sediments literally entered the body through wounds and breath, replicating the membrane permeability that first taught life the intelligence of discernment; extensive farm-based interspecies relationships where mammalian communication patterns (exemplified by Sarah the goat) demonstrated the same bioelectric networks that evolved from oceanic minerals (Bellono et al., 2017); decades of marine ecosystem engagement from commercial fishing through oceanographic research; and transformative encounters in East African savannas where early hominins first developed their Earthbound perspective.

The pivotal encounter with a dying bluefin tuna—whose sophisticated lateral line system capable of detecting electromagnetic fields and pressure differentials (Kalmijn, 1982) served as a cybernetic recognition moment—exemplifies how contact epistemology operates through embodied relationship rather than detached observation.
