href="https://unsplash.com">Unsplash

One of the ideas that stuck with me most was Schulte’s experience working with a time researcher. She was convinced she had absolutely no free time as a busy working mom. After logging and taking a close look at her schedule for a few weeks, the researcher discovered something surprising, she actually had far more free time than she realized.

The problem wasn’t that she lacked free time. The problem was that her free time existed in small, scattered around moments she wasn’t noticing or using intentionally.

That idea has stayed with me ever since finishing this book.

Let’s get into concrete examples, because I could honestly talk about this forever. As working parents, I really believe many of the things we want (and want to be doing) are hiding inside ten-minute windows.

“I want deeper friendships, but I don’t have time.”

Making friends as an adult is super hard.

I have wonderful friends from high school and college, but many of them live far away. I also have friends nearby, but coordinating schedules around work and children is always tough.

Friendship shouldn’t feel like another item on your to-do list, but yet every meaningful relationship does require effort.

Sending one thoughtful text to a friend to let them know you’re thinking of them takes literally 5 seconds. That small message often turns into a conversation over the next few days, a voice memo exchange, or eventually plans to get together.

Finding time to see friends as a working parent isn’t always easy, but friendships start with knowing someone cares. Everyone wants to know they’re being thought about.

“I want to read, write, or work on my hobbies.”

If you want to be a reader, read.

If you want to be a writer, write.

Set a timer for ten minutes. Then twenty the next day (if you have it).

Read. Write. Draw. Take photos. Learn guitar. Practice a language.

You don’t need three uninterrupted hours for something to be fun and worth it.

Most nights, I read for 10–30 minutes. I don’t pressure myself if I’m exhausted, busy, travelling or in a reading slump.

With just those small reading sessions, I finished 25 books last year and I’m on track to read 30–40 this year.

I really wanted to be reading more and finding books used to be a barrier for me too. So once a month, I block ten minutes on my work calendar. I log into my local library’s website, Google books in categories I of books I like and place a few holds. Done. Ten minutes of planning gives me weeks of books waiting for me.

The same idea works for almost anything.

Want to learn a language? Download Duolingo and practice for ten minutes each morning when you’re on your phone.

Want to learn to draw? Sketch for ten minutes during lunch.

Want to learn photography? Watch one tutorial during dinner.

Just because you’re a working parent doesn’t mean you can’t have hobbies, it just means you have to schedule them accordingly. And sometimes that’s in 10 minutes.

The Math

Ten minutes a day becomes 70 minutes every week, about five hours every month, and roughly 60 hours every year.

If you spent nearly 60 hours practicing one skill this year, don’t you think you’d become pretty good at it?

Small actions compound.

They create momentum. Once you begin something, it’s much easier to keep going.

Where Are Your Ten Minutes?

The life you want doesn’t actually require another hour every day. It’s ten minutes before bed. Ten minutes after you wake up. Ten minutes in the school pickup line. Ten minutes while dinner cooks. Ten minutes after the kids are asleep. Ten minutes before your next meeting begins. Maybe those minutes are for rest. Great. Rest intentionally. Maybe they’re for calling your mom. Walking your dog. Reading a few pages of a book. Listening to a podcast about something you’re curious about. Running a mile. Watching a YouTube video about a home repair. Unloading the dishwasher. Texting a friend who’s struggling. It’s the center of everything. It’s a place of safety. It’s both a physical and psychological haven. It should feel and function as one.

I will be the first to admit that I am a homebody and an introvert. I work from home and enjoy being alone. But I think loving your home is not just about your personality type. It’s also a strategic choice.

Whether your home is a studio apartment or a 12-bedroom mansion, I believe it should have systems that support the family or people living in it. When your home feels chaotic, it can lead to stressful mornings, resentment, disorganized thinking, frustration, and a nervous system that never fully shuts down.

A structured and welcoming home provides rhythm and stability that create a foundation, or a container, for everything else in life. This is true for both you and your family.

Home is where we rest, learn, love, cry, dream, create, unload, plan, celebrate, fall apart, and so much more.

My home is not perfect. I have two toddlers, remember? 🙂

Chaos lives within the walls. There are tiny footsteps, tantrums, toys scattered across the floor, and crumbs on the counter. Our home is old, quite small, and in need of many updates. But it’s everything we could ever need because it’s ours.

It’s filled with love, structure, routine, peace, and alignment that my husband and I have intentionally built to contain the chaos of life in a way that works for us and our children. That is the system I hope to share with you.

Home is where your choices compound. It isn’t built in a day. It’s built through small, consistent choices that, over time, create something sustainable and joyful.

Guiding question: Does your home feel peaceful or stressful? If you could focus on just one room this week to declutter, clean, or make more calming, which one would it be?

Thanks for reading.

B

Thanks for reading Becca Anne! I know the research says multitasking doesn’t actually work. It’s more challenging and time-consuming to switch your brain quickly between tasks than it is to finish one thing fully and move on to the next. I know this logically, but as a working mom, I’m sure you would agree that sometimes we have to multitask. Our world seems to spin on multitasking alone! I must run the washer while making breakfast for my kids while doing the dishes. There is no other way to survive (…at least that’s how it feels)! Listen to the research, but ultimately, you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do.

When you have multiple full-time jobs, sometimes you need to do more than one thing at once.

Thanks for reading Becca Anne! I’m doing a lot. Not perfectly! And I don’t say this to brag, because you’re doing a lot too. I say it because I know that if something truly matters to me, I can make time for it. And so can you.

Your life is designed by the choices you make every day. Design it in a way that fits your energy.

I know what you’re thinking...how the heck do you design by energy?

I’m so glad you asked.

When are you at your most focused? What does your work schedule look like? When are your kids home?

Managing each hour of the day and multitasking within those blocks can work sometimes, but I’ve found it often leads to burnout.

How I designed my life around energy

Here’s what my husband and I did.

We looked at our work schedules and our children’s schedules and created an energy schedule based on the day of the week, not by the hour. We zoomed out and looked at the bigger picture.

Mondays are our highly productive, high-movement, high-energy day. I fit as much into a Monday as I can, both at work and at home. I front-load my workweek so my most urgent and deepest work gets done first. Why? Because with two young children in daycare, my week can literally fall apart at any moment. A stomach bug, a weather-related school closure, or an unexpected meeting can change everything on any day of the week.

Later in the week, it’s much more likely that last-minute meetings will pop onto my calendar than it is on a Monday. Everyone is just getting rolling, and people usually aren’t scheduling same-day Monday meetings.

The same mentality goes for cleaning on Mondays. I typically vacuum either during my lunch break (I work from home!) or in the evening. I also fit in a 30-minute run to knock out one of my weekly runs. This happens either in the afternoon, if I happen to have a slower workday, or in the evening.

You get the idea.

Focus hard. Execute on Mondays. That’s where our high-energy is focused.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" They include weekly chores also, like cleaning out the fridge, bathrooms if needed, wiping down the kitchen sink, dusting if needed and, of course, showing up at a high level for work. On these days, however, in theory I have executed well on Monday and my to-do list at work and at home is slightly less urgent, and slightly shorter. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are for moderate energy execution. Get it done but don’t over do it.

Fridays are a little funky for our family. Currently, both of our children are home while my husband and I are working. Naturally, our ability to focus deeply is lower. That doesn’t mean we aren’t getting everything done. It just means we know Friday won’t look like Monday.

So we plan for it.

We let our energy guide how our week flows instead of trying to manage every hour of every day.

On weekends, we’re typically up early with the boys and active until midday. Midday is for rest. Then, we either have an active afternoon or a restful one, depending on how everyone is feeling.

It’s a flow. It’s a rhythm that gives us structure while leaving room for flexibility. It also allows us to genuinely lean into rest in the evenings and on weekends because we’ve planned for that energy “release”.

What I’ve learned

Over the last few years of managing both my energy and my family’s, I’ve learned that I can actually fit more into my life by doing so.

This rhythm keeps our schedule sustainable. We aren’t trying to operate in a constant state of high execution seven days a week, which means we actually have the energy to show up fully on the days we’ve designated for focused work and productivity.

In my experience, managing your time based on your energy actually means you accomplish more.

I’m also actively teaching my children to listen to their bodies and their own rhythms. If you’re feeling run down and tired, shift your expectations. Adjust the intention and energy of your week accordingly.

This week, I encourage you to take a look at your schedule.

Are you expecting yourself to operate at full speed five days a week, only to crash on days six and seven? Is that working well for you?

How could you reposition your energy and your expectations based on the day of the week instead?

Experiment with two or three high-execution, high-energy days, two or three mid-flow days, and one or two full rest or low-energy days.

See how it feels. Shift things around if it feels unnatural.

If you’re anything like me, you may find that you accomplish more when your schedule works with your energy instead of against it.

Unsplash

We often think our calendars reflect our priorities. More often than not, especially as a working mom, they are a map of everyone else’s priorities for us. This isn’t a bad thing necessarily, but over time it becomes passive, and passive is dangerous. If you look back at your calendar from last week, what do you see there? Work meetings. Appointments. Dinner with a friend. Time with my kids. If it was heavy on the travel or work meeting side, are you reorganizing your upcoming schedule to shift toward more focused time with your children? Your weeks become your life, and if you aren’t intentionally choosing where you spend your time and energy, it chooses for you. And it will not choose you.

So much of our time as working moms is not ours. It’s our boss’s, our clients’, our partner’s, or our kids’ time. They need something from us most hours of the day. There seem to be only a few windows of time that are really for us, if we are lucky. We are responsible for other people’s priorities just due to the nature of our lives, soccer practice, schoolwork, client events. Nobody is coming to protect your time. That is entirely your job.

Thanks for reading Becca Anne! Am I spending my time how I want to be? If today were my last day on earth, is this what I want to be doing? Usually the answer is, well, no, but I need to keep a roof over my head and put food on the table for my children.

But even within a full workday and a full day of parenting, ultimately you are responsible for the shape of your day. I believe we make time for what we want to make time for, even with highly saturated schedules. If you really wanted to walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes after work, you would. If you really wanted to connect with a friend via text during the workday, you would. The calendar doesn’t lie, and neither does how you actually spent Tuesday.

Yes, work takes up all day. And so does parenting. Look at your calendar before the week begins and schedule in what your priorities and intentions actually are. Are you focused on friendships this week? Put it on your calendar to reach out to a friend or two to schedule dinner or a playdate. Are you focused on a personal hobby? For the first hour of each day, before your kids wake up or before you clock in, pick three days this week where you will be writing or painting. Keep your commitments to yourself and your family.

Remember the big rocks and small pebbles theory? Your big rocks are your priorities and your small pebbles are the small tasks that get tacked on. If you don’t decide that your big rocks for the week are 1. Execute the work presentation, 2. Date night with one child, 3. Finish two books, your entire week will be small pebbles and it will feel as though nothing actually got done. A week of small pebbles is a week you won’t remember.

Working motherhood requires our attention to others at almost all times. Give some of it back to yourself and design the life you want to be living. It starts with you.

If someone else looked at your calendar for the past two weeks, could they determine what you value most? If not, what can you change about the next two weeks to make that true?

B

Thanks for reading Becca Anne! href="https://unsplash.com">Unsplash

More often than not, I think physical labor (chores, housework, cleaning, organizing, paying bills) between partners sometimes gets interpreted as the mental load. In reality, it’s the cognitive labor that goes along with the physical labor that creates an invisible weight. A weight that can become increasingly heavy over time.

Cognitive load often requires thinking multiple steps ahead. For example, if your child gets invited to a birthday party that’s three weeks away, you need to figure out what gift to buy, where and when to buy it, and how to wrap it. That takes time and coordination.

Men can absolutely do this, of course, but for whatever reason, at least in my experience, this process often comes more naturally to women. Therefore, holding all the mental steps required to prepare for that birthday party tends to fall on Mom. When there are dozens of plates spinning at the same time, house repairs, family dynamics, anniversaries, birthday parties, doctor appointments, and more, this is what causes burnout for many moms.

It wasn’t until I entered adulthood that I could recognize and define what a heavy mental load felt like. I’ve always been a planner and a doer, so it felt familiar to be the manager of my own life and home. Whether it was living with a college roommate or later moving in with my partner, now husband, it felt doable. It felt like a strength to be able to keep track of everything that needed to happen.

This isn’t to discount my roommate or my husband. Both have always taken active roles. My point is that it didn’t reach a point of frustration or burnout until we had children.

Once both my husband and I went back to work after having each of our children, the mental load on top of full-time work and homeownership became incredibly heavy very quickly. You’re no longer carrying responsibilities just for yourself. You’re carrying them for an entire family.

As I am sure you can relate — as a full-time employee, my to-do list is full every week. I have deadlines and responsibilities that cannot be dropped. That’s not always true at home, which makes it easy to push things off. Home updates, paperwork, scheduling, and all the little tasks add up in the background.

After consuming content about working parenthood over the years, it finally occurred to me that the source of much of my stress was this cognitive load. It’s this weight of feeling like all the planning, organizing, remembering, and thinking ahead falls on you.

Again, this isn’t meant to discount my husband (or yours!). He does a whole lot of the physical labor around our home. But mental load has been a conversation and an ongoing practice for us. We continually work together to make sure we’re both supporting our family in the best way we can.

What Has Helped

<a class="image-link Delegate. Delegate. To your partner, your children (if age appropriate), or close family and friends if they’re nearby. Bless having close grandparents - it’s saved us countless times.

Get everything out of your head and onto paper. A family calendar, a shared list, a whiteboard on the fridge. This way everyone can see what’s going on in your brain.

Give full ownership of a task to someone else. Not just the doing of it, but the remembering and planning of it too. This could be your family or hiring help.

One of the biggest things that has helped me is taking a full rest day each week. A true “Sabbath” day, as some call it, where I am not thinking about any of these items at all.

I can move 100 miles an hour most of the time, but not all the time.

I make a point to take one day each week to do nothing productive. I don’t move the needle forward in any way. I simply spend time with my family and do what I actually want to do that day. Rest is the priority.

This helps A TON.

By Monday, I’m usually ready to jump back into planning, chores, work, and everything else. Sometimes it helps simply to put a name to the stress or invisible weight you’re carrying.

Take a moment to evaluate how your own mental load is affecting you and your family. Now that you can define it, is this the source of your stress?

If so, what’s one small step you can take to lighten the load? Writing a list of three things for your husband each week? Taking an actual day? Giving your child ownership of one household responsibility?

Tell me in the comments. href="https://unsplash.com">Unsplash

At 31 years old, I finally feel like I have mastered sleep (yet, somehow it feels like I might jinx it by typing this). As a working mom with two young children, I want to share what I have learned with you.

Growing up, I always considered myself someone who “doesn’t sleep well.” This meaning: a light sleeper and someone who takes a long time to fall asleep, someone who can’t fall asleep on a plane, car, or sitting vertically. It took my journey into motherhood to realize that I am actually a great sleeper once I began to listen to my body, learn more about the science of sleep, and take small steps to set myself and my children up for success.

When my first child was a baby, the first year of his life was such a challenging time for my husband and me when it came to his sleep. I know moms can relate to feeling like it’s a riddle or Rubik’s Cube to figure out how to get your baby to sleep longer stretches at night.

My husband and I made changes to his bedtime routine, milk and bath routine, even the lighting in his room. We didn’t get a six-hour stretch of sleep from him until he was 6 months old and it was exhausting. This spurred my interest in sleep-training and infant sleep books, which then led to reading adult and science-based sleep books. My children are now 4 and 2 years old and both sleep between 11 and 12 hours each night with only occasional middle-of-the-night wake-ups from my 2-year-old. My husband and I both sleep soundly for 7-8 hours. We also incorporate regular naps/rest times as a family specifically on weekends. BLISS. I don’t write this to toot my own horn, but to express that great sleep is possible for your family too. It was not always this way for us.

Are you exhausted? Being a working parent is essentially having two full-time jobs and most of us aren’t getting enough rest & neither are our children. Frankly, I don’t think most people know how to actually rest or sleep well. It’s not taught to us. Were you ever taught to sleep? Did you learn about circadian rhythm or the science of caffeine? Sleep disorders? Unless you studied biology in college, most likely you are like me and didn’t learn much about sleep.

Our rest often includes sitting on the couch with our partners watching a show while simultaneously scrolling our phones. In reality, this is not restful. It’s actually stimulating our nervous systems, giving us small hits of dopamine and exposing us to insane levels of blue light that are making it impossible to fall asleep at night.

My no-fluff pieces of advice for you are below. I will expand on these ideas in upcoming posts.

There are types of rest that do not involve a screen that allow you to sleep better at night. Movement can be restful. Connection can be rest. Non-screen-related focused activities (podcast, knitting, reading) can be rest.

Quit drinking so much caffeine, seriously. Now that I am aware of it, it’s insane how much caffeine is in everything.

The lights in your house are making it hard for you to sleep. Bright overhead lights in the evening are keeping you from falling asleep. TV and phone use is keeping you from falling asleep.

Not having a consistent routine for you and your kids is making your life harder, I promise. Create a routine based on how many hours of sleep you need, then go from there.

To touch more on point number three specifically (just because I think it’s so fascinating): When I began my journey of teaching myself about how to sleep well/better, one of the first topics that piqued my interest was circadian rhythm. I listened to a podcast on a plane ride and these women discussed how they use blackout shades and red-tinted light bulbs around their house at night. Huh? But, IT WORKS. Keep your house/environment dark at night and bright during the day.

Obviously, keep your home safe and ensure you can see enough to not bump into anything. However, once the sun sets, do your best to keep your home only lit by dim lights that are not overhead lights. Small lamps, night lights, candles, and salt lamps work great.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" with no buildings, tinted windows, or sunglasses. Only fire at nighttime would light their world outside of pitch darkness. Our eyes have filters and cones within them that tell our brain based on the type of light ray what time of day it is. That is crazy cool. Getting outside in the bright light during the day, even if it’s overcast and “dark,” and keeping your home as dark as you can manage during the evening prior to bed will sync your rhythm and lead to a great night’s sleep. This environmental intentionality will also help your children sleep. Keep a small lamp in the bathroom during bath-time to promote sleep. Dim the lights in their room during story time. Encourage habits that also incorporate light strategy.

Prioritization of sleep has changed my family’s life as we move out of the baby phase and into the kid phase. I challenge you to pick one thing to change about your current sleep routine (dim the lights, cut caffeine, etc.) and see if you notice a difference. Sleep feels oddly silly and rudimentary to write about, but as I have researched more, it shocks me how little information there is out there, especially within a general education system.

Does your family have tips or tricks you use to encourage great sleep? I would love to hear them.

B

Juggling it all

Working mom, wife, & sleep-freak with a passion for family better time management, and the ability to slow down without guilt. Through this Substack, my hope is to support working moms (but really anyone interested in these topics) in discovering the fundamental value of creating sustainable rhythms and routines in your family, all centered on the science of sleep. Grab your cup of tea and a cozy blanket. If this sounds like your kind of space, please hit subscribe. I plan to post frequently with tidbits to make life feel more doable.

Picture this: a work week including a full schedule of client meetings, multiple projects and changing deadlines, last-minute phone calls while cooking dinner, an evening work event, a partner who is also balancing an equally full work schedule, a well-lived-in home that has a list of improvements that get pushed back week after week, a sink full of dishes, a pile of laundry overflowing in the bedroom (make that two piles!), texts from friends that go unanswered, a roller coaster sleep schedule due to a baby or toddler, plans for drinks with a friend that need to be rainchecked, a presentation that must be reviewed by tomorrow, an 18-month-old who gets sick in the middle of a hectic week, family health scares, and a toddler who will not take “no” for an answer. What about rest? What about reading a book? When are you exercising? Buying groceries? Making a grocery list? Good grief. Sound familiar? I am right there with you.

As a working parent, each week (each day!!), some more than others, feels like it might take a true miracle to get through. It seems completely impossible to keep up with the needs of your children, your career, your partner, your friends, your parents, your home, your pets, your neighbors, your commitments, your phone notifications, your meal planning, your grocery shopping, your financial goals, your laundry, your hygiene, your sleep, your hobbies, your water intake, your health and fitness, your mail, your future travel plans, and everything else in between. It seems impossible because, well, it basically is.

Doing everything to full capacity, perfectly, all the time is not possible. Not for one human. I am here to tell you that being a full-time working mom is really hard, and I will sit with you in that feeling. However, I truly believe there are small compounding changes we can make in our schedules that make chaotic life doable, wonderful, and actually fun. Particularly if we turn our gaze to prioritize specific elements of our lives, namely: rest. I believe if we focus on making small changes over time, we can maintain more productive, creative, and fulfilling lives.

This account will explore my belief that working moms should be prioritizing rest more intentionally for themselves and their families as the foundation of their schedule. We don’t need “life hacks” or more time, but simply a new relationship with time, rhythms, and what we are organizing our lives around. Working moms and their families deserve to feel their best, and this starts with adequate sleep. Many American families are not getting the recommended amount of sleep each night. When rest is lagging, literally every other part of your life during the day also falls short. Why are we not talking about this more?

The inception of this account came from many years of research, reading, and an obsession (albeit probably an unhealthy one at times) with getting as much done as possible. It also stemmed from experiencing sleep challenges after the births of my two children. I have always been the kind of person that needs to be in control and have a plan. If I am not two steps ahead, I feel behind. If I am meeting someone at 3 p.m. and am not five minutes early, I am late. This has been my mentality since I was a kid. Type-A, highly motivated, worry-wart, keep-moving-or-you-will-fall-behind type of a gal.

I learned through a professional development opportunity that your greatest strength is also your weakness when used too much. This could not be more true for me. Being on time, driven, proactive, and striving to be high-achieving has propelled me to accomplish things in my life that I am proud of, including my degrees, my family, my home, and my work.

With that said, it has also been a learning process when it comes to managing my mental health, values, and expectations for myself and my family when it comes to being productive and managing time. I have always been innately interested in and passionate about time management, making the most of my time, and sleep. I am not sure what it is, but these topics fascinate me, and I simply cannot find books on these topics to read fast enough. Rest, mental and physical health, and time with your loved ones are highly important things. You can be the most productive human on the planet, but if you aren’t happy, joyful, rested, energetic, and loving while you are doing it — what’s the point?

This is a manifesto of my journey with time management and productivity framed through the foundation of great sleep as a full-time working mom raising two young children. I have learned a lot from personal experience, a great deal of reading and research, and also from other moms in my life.

As I write this, my two boys are 4 and 2. They are the absolute joys of my life, and I have learned so much in my four years as a parent and certainly have much more to continue discovering. There is seemingly infinite information in the world about parenting available, and I respect that parenting choices range greatly. Please know that I come from a place of respect when offering potential advice and sharing my experiences. You are welcome to cherry-pick what you think works for you and your family and ignore the rest. It’s simply a compilation of ideas, concepts, and mindsets that have worked for me that I am excited to share with you.

Sleep is a function of the brain. Please consult your doctor before making changes to your sleep, your sleep environment, or other medical decisions for you or your family. I am not a doctor and have no health or medical certification or practice. This account does not serve as medical advice.

To this end, my hope is to provide relatable, relevant, and actually useful tidbits that benefit the flow of your life. It’s a great pleasure and privilege to write these words. Thank you for reading.

B
