For months after the email arrived from Château d’Orquevaux, I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. I kept expecting a polite follow-up message telling me there had been a glitch in the system, a mistake in the registry, or that the jury had meant to email a different Beckett Johnson.

When you have spent twelve years rebuilding your life from the inside out, your instinct isn’t to walk through an open door; it is to brace for it to slam shut. But the door hasn’t closed. I will admit that fear snuck in before we started. I caught myself thinking: What if I cannot learn this? What if my brain just can’t get it? Before the injury, learning was never an issue for me, and it surprised me how quickly that old shadow of doubt could still creep into the room.

Yet, two lessons in, something miraculous is happening. My brain feels like a spark plug firing for the first time in over a decade. There is no brain fatigue. There is no brain fog. To anyone else, that might sound like a small thing, but for me, it is a victory so massive it brings me to tears. For so long, every mental step was an exhausting struggle. Now, the homework makes me nervous, but it excites me. Twelve years ago, my brain forgot the English word for pen. Today, I am teaching it how to speak an entirely new language.

This is the part of the story they don’t teach you in school: independent art never happens in isolation. We love the romantic myth of the solitary artist starving in a garret, but the truth is that every breakthrough is built on a quiet, fierce network of people who refuse to let the story end. My French teacher is proof of that. She saw a stranger on the internet struggling to prepare for a dream, and she simply said, “let’s fix that”. She isn’t painting my canvases or writing my sentences. But she’s holding up a piece of the wall so I can keep building.

Because of that scaffolding, the view from my desk has completely transformed.

Twelve years ago, I couldn’t even use a desk. It was physically impossible. A good day back then meant being able to hold a conversation for five minutes without needing five days in a dark bed afterward to recover. I had to let everything go. Even the colors themselves literally overwhelmed and hurt my brain. Because the injury stole my sense of taste and smell, sight became the primary window through which I experienced the world. I learned to appreciate visual beauty with a fierce, protective intensity.

Today, that desk is a space of pure expansion. A good day now means waking up early, feeling clear, and having the energy to actually want to create.

Lately, I’ve been playing with thick acrylics, literally sculpting the paint onto heavy wood panels. I find it fascinating that I’ve become completely fixated on the tiny, intricate details of the paintings, whereas before the injury, I only ever looked at the overall, big picture. I don’t know where the work is headed yet, but I am entirely enjoying these new ways of expressing it.

But those heavy wood panels can’t travel across an ocean. So, sitting alongside the paint right now are rolls of raw canvas. It will be the first time in my life I have ever painted on rolled canvas instead of rigid wooden frames. To me, it feels like pure freedom. It means I can paint absolutely anywhere, a simple realization that, for some reason, had never occurred to me before.

I mean, hello, I am going to be painting in France!

This residency is a destination with a specific purpose: to find out what happens when the survival mindset stops, and the creation mindset takes over entirely.

I am starting to realize that the hardest part of a second chance isn’t surviving. It’s giving yourself permission to stop bracing and start building. Rolling up these canvases feels like letting go of the edges.

I want to stand in a field in Orquevaux and let my eyes do what they’ve had to do since the injury, take in everything. I want to find the single impossible color in that countryside that no tube of paint has ever matched and know I found it because I was standing there, not because someone described it to me.

The mountain ahead of me is still steep, and the logistics of international travel are real. But as I look around at the thick acrylics, the French homework, and those raw, waiting scrolls, I don’t feel the weight of the climb.

I just feel incredibly ready to unroll what comes next.

The entire spiritual community is obsessed with logging in. Meditation retreats. Ayahuasca ceremonies. Kundalini activations. We’re all frantically trying password combinations, convinced we’ve been locked out of our own cosmic Google account.

Tried “Love123.” Tried “11:11.” Tried our birthday backwards. Tried “Password” because maybe the Universe has a sense of humor.

Still locked out.

“What’s my divine purpose?” “How do I access my higher self?” “Why can’t I remember my past lives but I can quote every episode of The Office?”

But here’s a thought: What if we’re not supposed to log in?

Think about what a password actually does.

It doesn’t open the door for itself. It doesn’t get to see what’s inside. Its entire job is to BE THE BARRIER while also being THE KEY.

And it works specifically because it doesn’t know what it’s protecting.

Now look at humanity.

We’re conscious enough to ask cosmic questions. Just not conscious enough to remember why we walked into a room. We touch infinity in meditation. Then we check our phone to see if anyone texted. They didn’t. We check again 30 seconds later just to be sure. Still nobody.

We channel interdimensional beings with profound messages about the nature of reality. Then we panic because we can’t remember if we locked the car. We didn’t even drive.

We’ve been calling this spiritual failure.

Turns out it’s literally the job description.

Earth isn’t a school for ascending - it’s a cosmic crash pad where infinite beings come to forget they’re infinite.

On purpose.

For fun.

The cosmos specifically needs beings who can hold multidimensional consciousness while ALSO getting emotionally invested in whether the toilet paper rolls over or under.

Like, genuinely heated about toilet paper orientation.

While literal portals are opening in the pineal gland.

You can’t hack into a system when you ARE the encryption. Even if you Google “how to hack yourself spiritually” at 2 AM. Which you have. Don’t lie.

I’ll tell you what actually happens in my channeling sessions. Cassandra goes into trance. Some ancient Pleiadian elder shows up. They start downloading profound information about humanity’s role in the galactic awakening, the nature of timelines, the structure of consciousness itself, and I interrupt them.

“Quick question: Do you think my ex is stalking me?”

They pause. Give me this look. This cosmic look that somehow conveys disappointment across dimensions. And then they answer the question anyway because apparently even interdimensional beings can’t resist relationship gossip.

The session ends. I’ve just received direct transmission from a consciousness older than our solar system.

And the first thing I do?

Check my email to see if I got a response about that book proposal from three weeks ago.

I didn’t.

That’s not a bug. My job isn’t to HOLD the cosmic frequency. My job is to let it pass THROUGH while I remain completely, devastatingly ordinary.

Maybe that’s what 3i Atlas was checking.

Not whether we’re awake. But whether we’re still being both simultaneously. Still cosmic enough to receive the transmission. Still human enough not to lose our minds trying to hold it permanently.

So here’s the thing about being the password: You’re not JUST the password. You’re the password with admin access.

Full clearance to EVERYTHING.

The cosmic downloads AND the grocery lists. The interdimensional channeling AND the argument about whose turn it is to do dishes. The ability to hold space for ancient galactic wisdom AND the ability to spend 20 minutes deciding what to watch on Netflix.

Most beings get one or the other.

Ascended masters? Cosmic view, but they’re done with the human mess. Everyone else? Locked out of the bigger picture.

You?

You get both.

You’re the most powerful thing in existence, while also being a complete disaster at remembering to drink water.

That’s the most advanced operating system in the Universe.

“You are the password.”

Translation: You have clearance. To ALL of it. You’re not here to become enlightened. You already are. You’re just also the person who burnt toast this morning.

Both. Simultaneously. On purpose.

3i Atlas didn’t come to wake us up. It came to verify we’re still running both programs without picking a side. And the Universe doesn’t need more ascended masters sitting on clouds.

It needs creators who know they’re infinite, but still Google “is this a scam email” before opening attachments.

Who can reshape reality with a thought, but choose to spend that power wondering if they should text first or wait for them to text back.

Turns out the cosmic joke isn’t that we’re asleep. It’s that we keep pretending we need to wake up.

When she got accepted to the Château d’Orquevaux Artist and Writer residency in France, I was genuinely thrilled for her. I’d seen that same residency months earlier, bookmarked it, told myself I’d never get in, and closed the tab.

You know the move. Cassandra told me to apply. I didn’t. Then Sherry got in and Cassandra said it again. I still didn’t. Then it popped up on my Instagram a third time. At that point, even the algorithm was like, dude, just apply.

Then while she was there, literally sitting in the château, I got the email that I’d been accepted for May 2027. She gathered every artist in the room and sent me a video of them all saying congratulations. I cried.

Because I think that’s the question most of us are really asking when we look at something like this, not what is it, but what will it do to me if I actually go?

Her answer surprised me. But the moment that got me, the one I won't spoil, is what happened when she stood up and read a fairy tale she'd written about every artist in that room. Just watch.

Everyone wants the microwave version.
