That&#8217;s not wrong. It&#8217;s just not the real engine.</span></p><p><strong><span>The floor</span></strong></p><p><span>Nutrition is the environmental floor that genetics operate on. Feed a calf poorly early in life, and you don&#8217;t just slow it down, you can permanently cap what it&#8217;s capable of. Marbling-capable fat cells form mainly in the first 150 to 250 days of age. Miss that window, and you can&#8217;t multiply cells the animal never got the chance to build. An underperforming ration can suppress genetic potential. It cannot create potential that was never there.</span></p><p><strong><span>The ceiling</span></strong></p><p><span>That&#8217;s the half the &#8220;just feed them longer&#8221; story skips. The ceiling itself has moved, and it&#8217;s moving faster every year. According to Top Dollar Angus&#8217;s own December 2025 whitepaper, </span><em><span>Angus Marbling 2.0</span></em><span>, the breed average Marbling EPD for calves born in 2024 stood at 0.85, up 0.33 from 2014 and more than double the 0.15 increase recorded the decade before. Today&#8217;s top 10% of Angus sires carry a Marbling EPD of 1.17, the top 5% sit at 1.36, and the top 1% at 1.72. A growing number of sires have cleared 2.0 in just the last five years, unimaginable a decade ago. More than half of registered Angus cattle are now produced through artificial insemination, so those elite sires are actively resetting the breed average. Mate an average female (Marbling EPD 0.56) to a top 5% sire, and the calf crop lands in the top 25% of the breed in a single generation.</span></p><p><span>That shift shows up clearly in the grade mix. In 2010, Select made up 30% of graded beef, and Prime plus Choice combined sat under 65%. By 2025, Select had fallen to 13%, and Prime plus Choice had climbed past 84%. That&#8217;s a genetic ceiling story more than a feeding duration story, and the whitepaper says as much: while Angus genetics deserve significant credit, &#8220;other factors (like longer feeding periods) also played a role.&#8221; So what does that role actually look like, mechanically?</span></p><p><strong><span>The caveat that matters</span></strong></p><p><span>Days on feed and quality grade rose together, but longer feeding isn&#8217;t really the cause. It&#8217;s the enabling condition. Marbling is the last tissue type an animal deposits. New marbling cells proliferate mainly during that 150 to 250 day window. After that, the existing cells simply get bigger, all the way to slaughter. So yes, more days on feed lets more marbling develop. But it&#8217;s expressing a ceiling that&#8217;s already there, not manufacturing one from nothing.</span></p><p><span>That distinction splits cattle into two mistakes that &#8220;we feed them longer now&#8221; tends to flatten into one story:</span></p><ol><li><p><strong><span>A genetically strong calf pulled too early</span></strong><span> never gets the chance to show what it&#8217;s capable of. You already paid for that ceiling and left it on the table by not feeding long enough.</span></p></li><li><p><strong><span>A genetically limited calf fed longer to chase grade</span></strong><span> doesn&#8217;t get a proportional response. There&#8217;s no ceiling left to reach, just more fat cover, more weight, and a bigger feed bill.</span></p></li></ol><p><span>Both mistakes look identical during feeding and on a close out. They only look different once you actually know the genetic ceiling of the cattle in the pen.</span></p><p><strong><span>Where it shows up in a breakeven</span></strong></p><p><span>Feeding cost of gain has run $1.00 to $1.05 per pound in 2026. Thirty extra days at a modest 2.5 to 3.5 pounds a day adds somewhere around 75 to 105 pounds, or roughly $80 to $110 a head in added feed cost, before yardage and interest. Whether those thirty days are a good investment or a straight loss comes down to one question: does this animal still have ceiling left to reach?</span></p><p><span>On a genetically strong calf, those extra days can pay for themselves several times over, moving the carcass from low Choice to high Choice or clearing the bar into Prime, where quality grade still generates the largest grid premiums. On a genetically limited calf, that same $80 to $110 buys weight and days, not grade. It&#8217;s worth chasing on the right calf: Cattle-Fax&#8217;s beef demand index hit a record 150 in 2025, up nearly 50% since 1998-99.</span></p><p><span>Nutrition, meaning the ration and the days needed to let it work, is the necessary condition. Genetics is the sufficient one. Spend extra days without knowing the ceiling, and you&#8217;re guessing with real feed dollars.</span></p><p><strong><span>The practical takeaway</span></strong></p><ul><li><p><strong><span>Set days on feed targets by genetic knowledge, not by a blanket rule of thumb.</span></strong><span> &#8220;Feed them longer for better grade&#8221; is true on average and wrong for any individual pen with mixed genetics.</span></p></li><li><p><strong><span>Know what you&#8217;re feeding before you decide how long to feed it.</span></strong><span> A verified genetic profile turns &#8220;how many more days&#8221; from a guess into an actual calculation.</span></p></li><li><p><strong><span>Don&#8217;t confuse the correlation for the cause.</span></strong><span> The genetic ceiling moved first. Days on feed is what let that show up, not what created it.</span></p></li></ul><p><span>Nutrition and genetics aren&#8217;t competing explanations for why quality grade sits where it does today. Our kids aren&#8217;t old enough to compete in 4-H events quite yet, but we still take an active role. It&#8217;s a role that came naturally to both my wife and me: showing up for fair setup, helping announce during the livestock shows, running the kitchen, and doing our best to help this year&#8217;s kids learn and have the best experience possible. Part of that is paying it forward. Part of it is paying it back.</p><p>Fair week always brings a few topics to mind worth philosophizing on, some specific to the beef industry, others that apply to anyone involved in a 4-H program. One caveat: this all applies just as well to FFA. My experience is with 4-H simply because our county never had an FFA program, and our local fair doesn&#8217;t have an FFA presence.</p><p><strong>Where Are the Kids Going?</strong></p><p>The first topic came to mind while helping set up the beef barn last Saturday. Our county doesn&#8217;t draw the market beef numbers it used to, somewhere around 20 market steers this year. Some of that is demographics. But the last couple of years, I think affordability has played a bigger role than anything else. Meanwhile, the swine project keeps holding steady, largely for that same reason: it&#8217;s a cheaper door into the same experience.</p><p>So the question at the end of the day is: how do we get more kids involved in this project? And more importantly, are we, as an industry, actually willing to help young people get more involved if they want to be?</p><p>I keep coming back to this because without a new generation of youth entering the industry, our ability to innovate is going to stagnate. Now, before you think <em>&#8220;show cattle aren&#8217;t really comparable to what Top Dollar Angus is doing,&#8221;</em> hear me out. I&#8217;m not talking about the show ring itself. I&#8217;m talking about the core values underneath it: feeding an animal well, managing its health, and selecting for the traits that the person at the end of the chain finds valuable. At our fair, that&#8217;s the judge in the ring. At others, it might be the results from a feeding or carcass contest.</p><p><strong>What Hooked Me</strong></p><p>Two decades ago, it was a feeding and carcass contest where I fell in love with this industry. I didn&#8217;t win my class the day of the show. But finding out a few weeks later, as a 17-year-old, that I&#8217;d had the highest-gaining steer <em>and</em> the highest-placing carcass, that was bliss. My calf wasn&#8217;t the prettiest thing in the ring. But he sure put on the weight, and he sure hung well.</p><p>Experiences like that, in the ring or out, are what cultivate young minds into people genuinely passionate about this industry.</p><p><strong>The Real Value: Leadership</strong></p><p>This is the side of organizations like 4-H that I personally think matters most, more than any banner or belt buckle. It&#8217;s the leadership piece. For some kids it starts with the livestock judging team. If you&#8217;re lucky, there&#8217;s a meats team too. Either way, you get put in a position where you have to explain, in detail, how an animal looks and moves, to a stranger, at a contest, under pressure.</p><p>That experience, nerve-racking as I remember it being, taught me how to speak with confidence in front of a stranger, and just as importantly, how to be open to being wrong once the results were read out. Both of those traits have served me well throughout my career.</p><p>Moving further into it, my wife and I were fortunate enough to serve on our state 4-H councils, representing our areas professionally in front of people well beyond our own county. In the process, we made friendships with people we still work alongside in the industry today.</p><p>Agriculture is roughly 2% of the population. The beef industry is a just small slice of that 2%. Knowing people, and knowing how to work well with them, is going to matter more, not less, as we move forward.</p><p>So whatever role you&#8217;re playing during fair week this year, let&#8217;s remember why we really show up: for the betterment of the industry we hold dear, and the communities we&#8217;re part of.</p>]]></content:encoded></item><item><title><![CDATA[Background Noise]]></title><description><![CDATA[Genetic claims have outpaced buyer knowledge. Confirming that the seedstock program a commercial producer claims to be using is actually what&#8217;s behind their calf crop.</p><p>Every year as we prepare for video sale season, we evaluate producers as potential Top Dollar Angus candidates. Part of that process is cross-referencing the seedstock programs they&#8217;re advertising against our partner list. Sounds straightforward. However, it rarely is.</p><p>Claiming a brand association in a sale description was originally a legitimate signal. A shorthand that told the buyers something real about the genetics behind those calves. The commercial producer who spent the money and invested in quality bulls from a respected program was giving bidders a reason to look twice. It worked because it was true.</p><p>What I&#8217;ve learned over the years is that what you see in print is true less often than you&#8217;d think.</p><p>Some producers list a seedstock program they haven&#8217;t actually purchased from in a decade or more. Others are working with A.I. sires, which can be entirely legitimate. But the sale description doesn&#8217;t mention it, leaving buyers to assume a direct bull purchase that never happened. And then there&#8217;s the bloodline claim: a producer lists that their cattle are &#8220;out of&#8221; a certain lineage, which on closer inspection means their bulls came from a completely separate seedstock operation that simply used one sire from that program years ago. The bulls that were household names ten years ago are still showing up in sale descriptions today, long after the relationship&#8212;if there ever was one&#8212;has faded.</p><p>The ability to use genetics as a marketing tool has, in some cases, drifted into something resembling a wild west environment. We see it in the beef-on-dairy space too &#8212; cane codes get listed in sale notes hoping to catch a bidder&#8217;s eye. The problem is that none of it lands in the buyers mind the way producers hope it will.</p><p>Here&#8217;s the harsh reality: the average feedyard buyer recognizes maybe a handful of seedstock and semen company names. Fewer than five percent could identify a sire by name. We&#8217;ve seen semen company cane codes listed in sale descriptions &#8212; but who is that actually for? We work in genetics every day and still have to look them up, which is not always easy. These notes that producers agonize over are, for most buyers, background noise.</p><p>That&#8217;s not an indictment of the producers writing them. <em>It&#8217;s a recognition that the marketing tool has outpaced the audience it&#8217;s meant to reach.</em></p><p>Where it does start to matter is in the relationship. Once we establish a direct connection between a feedyard and a Top Dollar Angus-verified set of calves, we can do what a sale description never could, actually walk the buyer through what they&#8217;re looking at. When multiple Top Dollar Angus seedstock programs are represented in a sale group, we make sure the partner who brought that producer into the network gets the credit. The name gets repeated. The genetics get explained. And as feeders bid on verified cattle and see the results come back, the seedstock program behind those calves stops being a note in a description and becomes something they ask for by name.</p><p>It&#8217;s reputation building that actually works.</p><p>Sire verification isn&#8217;t glamorous work. When we can confirm the genetics behind a set of calves through registration numbers and present that information in a way that&#8217;s simple to read and easy to understand, something shifts. That confirmation is the foundation everything else is built on. A premium on sale day means something when the buyer trusts what they&#8217;re bidding on. A seedstock partner&#8217;s name carries weight when a feeder knows it&#8217;s based on fact &#8212; verified, not just printed in a description. I&#8217;ve personally seen feeders who purchased calves on our genetic evaluation percentage rank ask continually when the next set of calves sired by specific seedstock programs genetics are available. And this holds true for seedstock programs selling fewer than 100 bulls a year just as often as those selling 300 or more.</p><p>The commercial cattle industry moves on relationships and reputation, and both take time to build. What we&#8217;ve found is that simple, concrete verification accelerates that process. It gives buyers a reason to pay attention before the relationship is fully established, and it gives producers a credential that holds up under scrutiny.</p><p>That&#8217;s what verification actually does &#8212; it closes the gap between what a producer claims and what a buyer believes. In an industry where trust is earned slowly, putting the right information in front of the right people in a format they can actually use is one of the most straightforward things we do. The pace quickens. The list expands faster than you can work through it. And somewhere between moving cattle and watching a storm cross the radar, you catch yourself doing different math, not on price per pound or cost of gain, but on something harder to quantify.</p><p>How many hours did that just take? And what else could those hours have done?</p><p>The commodity we&#8217;re talking about isn&#8217;t traded on the CME. You won&#8217;t find it grazing or standing in a feedyard. But it&#8217;s present in every decision from conception to harvest, and it may be the one resource most consistently undervalued in this industry.</p><p>Time.</p><p>A conversation recently brought this into focus. During separate conversations with two other industry members, working through production economics, the point surfaced that the one input almost nobody formally accounts for is the hours required to produce a pound of beef. Not as a line item. Just time that is absorbed, assumed, and folded into the identity of being a cattle producer.</p><p>That might sound philosophical for a publication about feeder cattle genetics. The connection is more direct than it appears.</p><div><hr></div><p>Ask most cow-calf producers how they manage their time and they&#8217;ll look at you sideways. But watch how they make decisions, and you&#8217;ll find time is factored in constantly just implicitly.</p><p>Calving ease is the clearest example. Producers select with cow welfare and heifer safety in mind, both real. But embedded in that decision is something else: the desire to not spend nights in a cold barn pulling calves, to build a cowherd that needs less supervision. The desire, as we&#8217;ve all heard from the sale block, to <em>sleep with confidence</em> during calving season.</p><p>That&#8217;s a time decision dressed up as a genetics decision.</p><p>The same logic runs through pre-conditioning and health protocols. A robust vaccination program adds upfront labor and buys time back later; fewer treated cattle, less time on smaller tasks. The producers who&#8217;ve figured this out often can&#8217;t explain why their program works. They just know it does. They&#8217;ve front-loaded their time investment for a more manageable workload on the back end.</p><p>Growth traits are more complicated. When selection for maximum performance gets ahead of the management system supporting it, the time costs show up fast: harder fleshing cattle, animals that look great on paper and create extra work in practice. The genetics and the operation must be in sync. When they&#8217;re not, someone pays with their time.</p><div><hr></div><p>From a financial standpoint, time has a clean proxy in this industry: interest. Every dollar borrowed carries a daily cost that accrues by the calendar, not performance &#8212; the most honest acknowledgment this industry has that time carries a price.</p><p>But interest is at least captured in accounting. What rarely appears anywhere is the true cost of the producer&#8217;s own hours &#8212; managing cattle, calling veterinarians and bankers, doing it again when something goes wrong. Two operations of identical size can carry wildly different time burdens, and the heavier one often doesn&#8217;t know it because there&#8217;s no invoice for their own labor.</p><p>At the feedyard it&#8217;s even more explicit. When a calf converts efficiently, grows on schedule, and stays healthy, the yard isn&#8217;t just saving on inputs&#8230;.<em>they&#8217;re buying back time.</em> Fewer decisions, fewer interventions, fewer days before the pen turns. Feeder cattle genetics aren&#8217;t just about the premium at harvest. They&#8217;re about what happens to everyone&#8217;s time through the whole chain.</p><div><hr></div><p>Memorial Day comes around and somewhere a rancher is turning cows to grass on the same program he&#8217;s run for fifteen years. Across the county, a similar operation went to grass a week ago. That producer has moved on to another task or has an extra afternoon with his family. The difference isn&#8217;t a breakthrough. It&#8217;s the accumulated effect of decisions made over several years that quietly reduced the time demands on his operation.</p><p>He didn&#8217;t set out to solve for time. He set out to sell better calves. Those two things turned out to be more connected than he expected.</p><p>The producers who came before us didn&#8217;t have today&#8217;s tools. But many understood something the modern era makes easier to forget: time spent chasing preventable problems is expensive in ways that never show up on a balance sheet.</p><p>The question worth sitting with this time of year isn&#8217;t just how the cattle are performing. It should. A good set of eyes, knowing how cattle move, reading weather, managing health issues before they become a crisis &#8212; that&#8217;s what separates a good operator from an average one. Nobody&#8217;s arguing that.</p><p>But there&#8217;s a quieter shift happening underneath all of that. The operations consistently collecting, organizing, and actually understanding their own data are starting to position themselves differently. Not with fanfare. Just differently.</p><p>That shift is happening at the exact same moment the rest of the world is talking about artificial intelligence. And the typical producer response is pretty predictable: <em>&#8220;That&#8217;s Silicon Valley. That&#8217;s not cattle.&#8221;</em></p><p>Fair enough. Most of what&#8217;s in the headlines isn&#8217;t relevant to a cow-calf operation today. But here&#8217;s the part that is: AI is only as useful as the information you feed it. And on that front, most of the cow-calf sector is already behind &#8212; before AI ever enters the conversation.</p><div><hr></div><p>I&#8217;ll say it directly, because it shows up in TDA evaluations every day.</p><p>The majority of commercial producers are making genetic purchasing decisions based on metrics they never actually measure inside their own herds.</p><p>Start with something as fundamental as sire identification. In our evaluation process, roughly half of producers can pull bull registration numbers without any extra effort. The other half recovers that information after the fact &#8212; through breed associations, purchase records, old invoices. Even fewer have EPD profiles or terminal index values organized in any format they can actually use.</p><p>That&#8217;s not a dig at anyone&#8217;s management. These are good cattlemen. But the information was never centralized, and now it&#8217;s not available when it matters.</p><p>The same thing shows up in calf performance records.</p><p>Birth dates and tag numbers? Almost universal. Vaccine and treatment documentation? Most producers have it because a vet or sale barn requires it. But beyond that, actual performance tracking largely disappears.</p><p>Which creates a real contradiction.</p><p>Weaning weight is one of the most discussed EPD traits in the bull sale ring &#8212; a primary driver of buying decisions. Yet a significant number of producers never capture a weaning weight on their own calves and don&#8217;t market them the day after weaning. Instead calves get backgrounded for 45 to 60 days (or longer) before they&#8217;re weighed across the ring at the sale barn, and that number gets called a weaning weight. It&#8217;s not. It&#8217;s a post-weaning weight after compensatory gain has already started.</p><p>Nobody&#8217;s at fault for that. Labor is expensive. Facilities aren&#8217;t always set up for it. Real constraints exist. But there&#8217;s a genuine disconnect when producers are paying a premium for wean-weight touted genetics and not measuring it on the cattle they&#8217;re already raising.</p><div><hr></div><p>Here&#8217;s why it matters going forward.</p><p>The downstream segments of this industry are already operating in a data-rich environment. Feedyards collect detailed closeout performance on every pen. Packers track carcass characteristics at the individual animal level. Breed associations are building genomic and phenotypic databases that are getting more predictive every year.</p><p>The commercial cow-calf sector is the largest remaining gap in that chain.</p><p>And that gap is becoming more visible at exactly the moment cattle values have made risk reduction more valuable than ever. When a feeder is paying north of $2,500 for calves and projecting $3,000-plus invested in finished cattle, predictability carries a premium. Health documentation matters. Genetic verification matters. Historical performance patterns matter.</p><p>Documented cattle are starting to trade differently than undocumented cattle.</p><p>Not because spreadsheets replace stockmanship &#8212; they don&#8217;t. But documented performance reinforces what good stockmen already know about their cattle, and it makes that case to the next buyer in the chain who doesn&#8217;t.</p><div><hr></div><p>The producers positioned best over the next decade probably won&#8217;t be the ones with the most technology. They&#8217;ll be the ones disciplined enough to consistently collect useful information and willing to make it visible to whoever buys their cattle next.</p><p>That doesn&#8217;t require turning a ranch into a tech company.</p><p>It starts with better questions.</p><p>Which bulls were actually turned out on which pastures? What were calves genuinely weighing at weaning? Which sire groups consistently outperformed? Which cows kept producing the most profitable calves year after year? Which health protocols produced the fewest pulls?</p><p>Those aren&#8217;t AI questions.</p><p>Those are management questions.</p><p>But they&#8217;re also the foundation of everything that&#8217;s It caps potential at every level of the supply chain.</p><h3>A funny thing happens outside the cattle industry</h3><p>The same producer who haggles over bull prices, questions the value of genetic verification, and buys the cheapest available mineral often won&#8217;t think twice about financing a newer combine or upgrading his planter with precision technology.</p><p>Nobody calls that reckless. In fact, it&#8217;s expected. You invest in equipment that makes your operation more efficient and productive. The ROI conversation happens naturally. The question isn&#8217;t whether to invest &#8212; it is which investment pays best.</p><p>But mention spending extra on genetics, and that&#8217;s a different conversation entirely.</p><p>A recent discussion brought this double standard into sharp focus. The topic was a feeder asking his calf provider to improve their genetics &#8212; better sire selection, the kind of change that moves the needle on what those calves are worth for everyone that owns them. The buyer&#8217;s response was telling: <em><strong>if they improve their genetics, they&#8217;re going to want more for their calves.</strong></em></p><p>Yes. That&#8217;s exactly right. And that&#8217;s exactly the point.</p><p>This same feeder also operates a large custom farming business. If a new silage chopper came to market offering better efficiency, he wouldn&#8217;t hesitate to pay more for it &#8212; knowing his bottom line would improve, and his customers would benefit for the same reason. A rational positive for everyone involved. Nobody would question that logic.</p><p>But pay more for calves with better genetics that will perform better on feed and grade better on the rail? Suddenly the math is questioned.</p><p><em><strong>The cattle business has normalized the first-cost mentality in a way that other agricultural sectors haven&#8217;t &#8212; and everyone up and down the supply chain pays for it.</strong></em></p><p>The inconsistency is worth sitting with. Cattle are the product. They are the crop. Investing in genetics that differentiate your cattle from average is no different in principle than investing in seed technology, soil health, or newer equipment. The producer who wouldn't dream of planting a field with untested, generic seed varieties will sell generic, undocumented cattle without a second thought</p><h3><strong>What high markets actually create</strong></h3><p>When base prices are elevated, premiums matter more in absolute dollar terms &#8212; not less.</p><p><strong>BASE PRICE &#8212; $370/cwt</strong></p><p><strong>PREMIUM CAPTURED &#8212; +$15/cwt</strong></p><p><strong>PER HEAD ON 750 LB &#8212; $112.50</strong></p><p>On a 100-head calf crop, that's $11,250 sitting on the table. Not from more acres, more cows, or a favorable weather year. From investing in inputs that make your cattle worth more to the buyer writing the check.</p><p>In a high market, the buyer has more at stake &#8212; and more reason to pay for certainty.</p><p>Buyers committing $3,000 a head to place cattle are more motivated to pay a premium for documented genetics and a verified health program, not less. Their exposure is higher, but their need for predictability is greater. Genetics and documentation are risk management tools from the buyer&#8217;s seat. Right now, that buyer is highly motivated to manage risk.</p><p>That&#8217;s the counterintuitive reality: the cost of a pen that underperforms has never been steeper, and the premium for certainty has never been more available.</p><h3>What the buyer sees</h3><p>A feedyard manager looking at two sets of calves &#8212; comparable in weight and visual condition &#8212; will default to paying more for the set he can underwrite with data. Verified genetics, a documented health program, information that tells him something about what these cattle will do on feed and on the grid. That&#8217;s not unwise. That&#8217;s protecting his investment.</p><p>The first-cost buyer&#8217;s calves go into the average pen. They bring the average price. In the current market, the average price is good &#8212; nobody&#8217;s walking away from it. But the producer who invested in documentation and genetics gets paid three times: once for the high market, once for a lower cost of gain, and finally for the premium the market pays for quality.</p><p><em>-Those extra dollars are available to anyone willing to make the upfront investment.</em></p><p>This market is well-deserved. But markets cycle, and the habits built during strong times determine your position when conditions change. The first-cost mentality feels disciplined &#8212; but it isn&#8217;t. It&#8217;s a ceiling on your operation&#8217;s potential, whether you&#8217;re running cows, feeding cattle, or both.</p><p>Producers and feedyards that invest in good genetics, documentation, and verified health programs will be the ones buyers search for when the market softens. Those who didn&#8217;t will be back in the average pen wondering why their results look the same as everyone else&#8217;s.</p><p>High markets are a gift. Feeder cattle prices continue breaking records. Prices that seemed unimaginable three years ago are now reality. Those bigger-than-ever calf checks are being deposited with a smile. If you&#8217;re a commercial rancher with a sizable calf crop heading toward a spring or fall sale, the fundamentals are working in your favor.</p><p>That&#8217;s worth acknowledging. It&#8217;s worth celebrating.</p><p>However, just for a moment, step into the boots of a cattle feeder buying your calves. From where they&#8217;re standing, this market doesn&#8217;t necessarily feel like a celebration, even with high fed cattle prices.</p><p><strong>The Numbers Behind the Tension</strong></p><p>When a feedyard manager bids on your calves today, they&#8217;re not writing a check for $800 a head. They&#8217;re committing $2,800, $3,000, sometimes more&#8212;per animal. Multiply that across a pen of 100 head and you&#8217;re looking at a single placement decision that can exceed $300,000. If it&#8217;s a small feedyard of 3,000 head, staying full means shelling out $9,000,000. Yes, $9 million in animal costs alone.</p><p>Then add interest. With rates where they&#8217;ve been, the cost of carrying those cattle&#8212;the financing&#8212;runs several dollars per head per day. Use 180 days at 7% interest and that adds approximately $175 per head. And that&#8217;s without even factoring in feed, labor, equipment and other operating costs.</p><p>Every additional day on feed isn&#8217;t just a feed cost. It&#8217;s compounding financial exposure to an asset that&#8217;s already priced at a premium.</p><p>They bought high. They have to sell high. And the market doesn&#8217;t allow that to happen.</p><p><strong>The Market That Moves on a Whim</strong></p><p>Like calves, fed cattle prices have been historically strong, that part is obvious. But &#8220;historically strong&#8221; doesn&#8217;t mean stable.</p><p>We&#8217;ve all watched cattle futures trade limit down multiple days in a row. We&#8217;ve seen bids drop $100&#8211;$200 per head in a matter of weeks on little more than a headline or a rumor. When you&#8217;re carrying cattle that cost you $3,000 a head to place, a $150 swing isn&#8217;t a market blip&#8212;it&#8217;s a potential disaster.</p><p>This is why many feeders have become emotionally numb to the daily swings. They have to be. If they let every limit-down day send them into a panic, they couldn&#8217;t function. They must manage it to their best ability. They hedge when their lenders require it, and, many times, even when they don&#8217;t. They run breakevens daily. They watch the basis and pray the fundamentals hold.</p><p>But make no mistake&#8212;that numbness is a coping mechanism, not confidence. There&#8217;s a lot of tension sitting underneath it.</p><p><strong>Cattle That Were &#8220;Supposed&#8221; to Make Money</strong></p><p>Here&#8217;s a scenario that plays out more than most people realize:</p><p>A feeder buys a pen of calves in the fall&#8212;calves that, on paper, should finish profitably. The breakeven math looks reasonable. The genetics are average. The health history is thin but not alarming. At placement, the numbers suggest a modest profit on the backend.</p><p>Fast forward 150 days. Three things changed:</p><p>Fed cattle futures dropped. Not collapsed&#8212;but softened. Enough to turn a modest profit into a breakeven, or worse.</p><p>The cattle graded heavier on Select than expected. USDA Select carcasses are currently discounted $10&#8211;$15 per cwt. below Choice. On a 900-pound carcass, that&#8217;s $90&#8211;$135 per head&#8212;gone.</p><p>A health event mid-feeding added 12 extra days on feed. Twelve days doesn&#8217;t sound like much. At $3&#8211;$4 per head per day all-in, that&#8217;s another $36&#8211;$48 per animal.</p><p>Three factors that weren&#8217;t catastrophic on their own. Together, they turned a pen that &#8220;should have made money&#8221; into a sizable loss. Now the feeder must go back to the bank and explain it.</p><p><strong>Why This Matters a Cow-Calf Producer</strong></p><p>This discussion is not to make you feel sorry for cattle feeders. They&#8217;re professionals operating a business they chose, and the good ones manage risk well.</p><p>I&#8217;m telling you this because understanding their reality directly shapes how they buy your calves.</p><p>When a feedyard manager bids on a pen of calves with documented genetics, strong health history, and known performance data&#8212;he&#8217;s not just buying cattle. He&#8217;s buying down his risk exposure on a multimillion-dollar operation. He&#8217;s buying predictability in an environment where little else is predictable.</p><p>That&#8217;s why verified cattle&#8212;cattle where the genetics are known and the health program is documented&#8212;carry a premium that holds even when the market gets uncomfortable. It&#8217;s not just marketing. It&#8217;s risk reduction. And right now, risk reduction is exactly what feeders are paying for.</p><p><strong>The Tension Is Real&#8212;and So Is the Opportunity</strong></p><p>Both sectors are doing well by historical standards. Let&#8217;s be clear about that.</p><p>But the cow-calf producer selling calves at record prices and the feedyard manager writing checks at record prices are experiencing this market very differently. One is cashing in. The other is managing a high-stakes tightrope walk where the potential for a hard fall is as probable as a reasonable reward.</p><p>Producers who understand those dynamics market calves <em><strong>with</strong></em> documentation, genetic consistency and health transparency. They are well positioned to capture the best of what this market has to offer. Not just today, but in the repeat business, the premium bids, and the long-term buyer relationships that outlast any single market cycle.</p><p><strong>These record prices are hard earned and yours to keep. Bull sale season in addition to feeder calf sales has a way of compressing time. When you&#8217;re in the middle of calls, analyzing data, and promoting sales, research and reflection gets pushed to the margin.</p><p>That&#8217;s unfortunate, because this time of year reveals something important: how producers are thinking about sire selection, long-term direction, and the discipline required to hit a defined genetic target.</p><p>Over the past several months, I&#8217;ve worked closely with two commercial producers: One working toward qualification in Top Dollar Angus and another who recently became qualified. Their paths are different. Their timelines are different. But both illustrate what intentional genetic progress actually looks like.</p><div><hr></div><h2>Not Every Program Is Built the Same</h2><p>Before diving into the examples, it&#8217;s worth stating something plainly.</p><p>Not every herd is intended to become Top Dollar Angus verified, and that&#8217;s okay. The traits we evaluate and promote are not every producer&#8217;s top priority. Different environments, marketing goals, and programs produce different emphases.</p><p>The question isn&#8217;t whether everyone should chase the same goal.</p><p>The real question is: If you decide to aim for a specific genetic target, are you willing to build toward it with discipline?</p><p>These two operations answered that question in different ways.</p><div><hr></div><h2>Example One: Building Without Sacrificing the Core Strengths</h2><p>The first producer began a discussion with me about a year ago. He reached out after reading an article and wanted to explore whether qualification was realistic for his operation.</p><p>He had inherited a program built around older, lower-growth genetics and had historically marketed calves through the local barn. Over the last five years, however, he carved out a profitable niche producing replacement females for high-elevation operations, crossbreeding Red Angus and Hereford. That maternal focus was paying the bills.</p><p>His first question was straightforward:</p><blockquote><p>&#8220;Can we do this without sacrificing my ability to make high-value replacement females?&#8221;</p></blockquote><p>The answer was simply: Yes&#8212;but not overnight.</p><p>We agreed on a 3&#8211;5-year runway. Trying to force rapid change often creates unintended fallout.</p><p>The first step was obvious. We identified bulls already in inventory that were significantly holding the program back. He culled aggressively where it made sense. That single move pushed his projected 2026 calf crop to roughly a Top 33% ranking with the Top Dollar Angus Evaluation.</p><p>From there, the work became more surgical.</p><p>Throughout the summer and fall, we had multiple conversations around individual sires&#8212;how they would move his score, how they would influence growth and carcass metrics, and just as importantly, how they would protect maternal function and replacement value.</p><p>With his updated sire battery, his projected 2027 calf crop now ranks in the Top 28%.</p><p>What&#8217;s holding him back? Legacy influence. Prior sire genetics don&#8217;t disappear overnight. It takes time for old genetics to be diluted out of the cow base. Realistically, his 2028 calf crop will likely be the first to qualify.</p><p>But here&#8217;s what stands out: He&#8217;s not guessing anymore.</p><p>He knows the target.<br>He understands the constraints.<br>And every bull purchase is filtered through both.</p><p>That&#8217;s strategic breeding.</p><div><hr></div><h2>Example Two: The Long Game and Measured Progress</h2><p>The second producer&#8217;s story began nearly five years ago.</p><p>He had purchased a bull from one of our seedstock members and wanted to pursue qualification. When we ran the initial evaluation, he fell short. The issue wasn&#8217;t lack of intent&#8212;it was variation. His sire battery ranged from high-performing genetics to bulls that ranked in the bottom quartile for growth and carcass traits.</p><p>Unlike the first producer, he wasn&#8217;t positioned to cull aggressively. Cash flow and logistics dictated patience. So, he committed to the long game.</p><p>He worked closely with the original seedstock supplier to make disciplined sire selections over time. He also incorporated genetics from a second Top Dollar Angus seedstock program&#8212;sires that were clearly identified and marketed with alignment in mind.</p><p>Earlier this year, he asked us to re-evaluate.</p><p>Five years after that first conversation, he qualified.</p><p>His calves sold this spring. When we compared his sale results to the broader market that day, the data showed a total premium of $2,944 on 111 head.</p><p>On the surface, that number may not seem that big in a high-price market.</p><p>Yet when you evaluated against his verification costs, the return on investment was 4.66 to 1.</p><p>That&#8217;s not a theoretical value.</p><p>That&#8217;s measurable success, which is set up to repeat going forward.</p><div><hr></div><h2>What These Examples Reveal</h2><p>Neither of these producers flipped a switch.<br>Neither sacrificed their core business model.<br>Neither tried to shortcut the process.</p><p>Both committed to disciplined sire selection with a defined genetic target in mind.</p><p>Genetic progress, when intentional, compounds. It may take several calf crops to get there and may require patience while older bull-genetics phase out. These discussions served several purposes. First, they provided an opportunity to reconnect and ensure our customers are receiving the level of service and follow-through they expect from Top Dollar Angus. Second, they coincided with cattle we were promoting for multiple January sales. Most importantly, they were intentional conversations designed to better understand how feeders are ranking genetic traits in the current market&#8212;and to confirm that our evaluation framework remains aligned with what they value most.</p><p>The feedback was candid and constructive. In general, it reinforced that the core components of our genetic evaluation are sound, while also identifying areas where refinement may be warranted as market dynamics evolve.</p><p>While fed-cattle marketing methods naturally came up, the underlying theme across nearly every conversation was risk management through genetics. Feeders repeatedly emphasized that cattle with unknown genetics or limited performance history amplify uncertainty&#8212;especially in a market where fed cattle routinely exceed $3,000 per head. Conversely, cattle backed by known, trusted genetic profiles increase predictability and reduce downside risk. That distinction mattered far more to feeders than the specific marketing channel used at the end of the feeding period.</p><p>Where the discussions became most valuable was in drilling down on which traits feeders believe matter most when bidding on genetically superior feeder cattle.</p><div><hr></div><h3>1. Average Daily Gain (ADG)</h3><p>Average Daily Gain clearly emerged as the top-ranked trait. While cost of gain has moderated somewhat alongside lower feed costs, time on feed remains a dominant economic driver. High feeder cattle prices combined with elevated interest rates place a premium on cattle that can reach market-ready weights sooner. Every additional day on feed increases financial exposure. The takeaway is straightforward: ADG has always mattered, but in today&#8217;s environment it has moved decisively to the front of the line.</p><p>Several feeders tied this discussion directly to a desire for better genetic indicators of efficiency&#8212;specifically feed conversion. While ADG and feed efficiency are favorably correlated, feeders were quick to point out that this relationship deserves deeper genetic scrutiny across large, real-world datasets.</p><div><hr></div><h3>2. Carcass Weight Potential</h3><p>Carcass weight potential ranked a close second, edging out marbling in many conversations. This reflects the industry&#8217;s continued push toward heavier end weights&#8212;but with an important caveat. Feeders are not interested in simply adding days on feed to chase pounds. Instead, they want cattle genetically capable of achieving heavier carcass weights efficiently, without eroding performance or economics.</p><p>That distinction matters. Heavier carcasses generated by cattle that require excessive days on feed undermine the very efficiency feeders are trying to protect. Carcass weight potential, when paired with strong growth genetics, was viewed as foundational regardless of how cattle are ultimately marketed out of the yard.</p><div><hr></div><h3>3. Marbling</h3><p>Marbling remains critically important, but it was consistently framed as a value-added trait rather than the primary driver. Several feeders summarized it well: cattle that grade exceptionally but produce lighter carcasses often fail to generate maximum total carcass value. In today&#8217;s market, marbling without sufficient carcass weight simply doesn&#8217;t pencil the way it once did.</p><p>That said, feeders expressed a high level of confidence in Top Dollar Angus&#8211;verified cattle to meet marbling thresholds, which allows them to focus selection pressure more heavily on growth and efficiency traits.</p><div><hr></div><h3>Ribeye Area</h3><p>Ribeye area did not appear in the top three traits for any of the feeders surveyed. While it remains relevant due to its relationship with red-meat yield, it is clearly viewed as a lower-ranking consideration compared to growth, carcass weight, efficiency, and marbling.</p><div><hr></div><h3>What This Means Going Forward</h3><p>The message from our customers was consistent: cattle feeders are paying more for cattle that can finish efficiently at heavier weights while maintaining strong marbling performance. That balance&#8212;not any single trait in isolation&#8212;is how genetic value is being defined today.</p><p>These conversations reinforce why ongoing engagement with our customers matters. Genetic priorities shift as market conditions change. Our responsibility is to listen, test assumptions, and adjust accordingly. By staying closely connected to cattle feeders, we can continue refining our evaluation methods and ensure Top Dollar Angus cattle stand out where it ultimately matters most&#8212;downstream, where length="0" type="image/jpeg"/><content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>By now, most people have heard that the Tyson plant in Lexington, Nebraska, is scheduled to fully close by January 20, 2026. It&#8217;s an unfortunate development for the community&#8212;but at its core, this is a market-driven decision.</p><p>To understand why, look no further than the most recent Cattle on Feed report. Compared to a year ago, cattle and calves on feed are down roughly 2%. More telling are placements and marketings. November placements were down 11% year over year, and November marketings were down 12%. That translates to more than 175,000 fewer cattle entering feedyards in a single month.</p><p>Let that sink in. On a forward basis, that&#8217;s roughly 43,000 fewer cattle available for harvest per week down the road.</p><p>Placements came in well below expectations, and the data continue to support a bullish outlook for 2026. Some argue that border closures are the primary driver. It&#8217;s an easy argument to make&#8212;but it overstates the impact. In an average year, imports account for only about 3&#8211;3.5% of the domestic cattle supply, and much of that volume has already been absorbed by Mexico&#8217;s market this year. From a fundamentals standpoint, reopening the border would only marginally increase supply.</p><p>That said, futures markets don&#8217;t always wait for fundamentals. The CME Live Cattle board has shown volatility before on little more than rumor.</p><p>Which brings us back to the core question: why buying, refurbishing, and operating a packing plant&#8212;Lexington in particular&#8212;is far more complicated than it appears.</p><p>From a community and economic development standpoint, the idea is admirable. But the hidden costs are significant. The Lexington facility is one of Tyson&#8217;s older plants. It originally opened as an IBP plant in 1990, following Tyson&#8217;s acquisition of IBP in 2001. Before that, the site housed a Sperry-New Holland facility manufacturing farm implements, which closed in 1985 before being converted.</p><p>Some of the plant&#8217;s infrastructure is more than 40 years old&#8212;designed and retrofitted long before 1,000-pound carcasses became commonplace. While updates were made over time, many systems would still require substantial reinvestment to support a long-term operation. Are rail heights adequate for today&#8217;s cattle? Can hide pullers handle heavier weights? These aren&#8217;t minor details&#8212;they&#8217;re capital decisions.</p><p>Even if you focus solely on operations from the knockbox to the rail exit, labor presents another challenge. The workforce still exists in the region, at least on paper. However, many of the remaining employees were managers or technical specialists, and much of the upper-level expertise had already been consolidated back to corporate headquarters in prior years. Skilled plant managers, maintenance supervisors, and food-safety professionals are not easily replaced.</p><p>Then there&#8217;s the issue of marketing product out the back of the plant&#8212;an area often underestimated by those outside the packing business.</p><p>During college, I worked two summers in a processing plant: one on the live and harvest floor, the other on the fabrication and finished-product side. That experience made one thing clear&#8212;marketing boxed product, hides, and offal is every bit as complex as sourcing stock.</p><p>It&#8217;s easy to watch the Live Cattle board or focus on negotiated cash bids. Far fewer people track Choice boxed beef cutout values, hide prices, or byproduct revenue streams. Yet those components often determine whether a plant is profitable or underwater.</p><p>Are you producing a Natural program? If so, what specifications and verification costs come with it? What grids and premiums will you offer producers? How do those align with your customers?</p><p>These questions don&#8217;t have simple answers.</p><p>I applaud producers and investors who want to reinvest in their communities and explore reopening a shuttered plant. New entrants to the packing sector should be welcomed. But many of the loudest voices online underestimate the structural challenges that led to closure in the first place.</p><p>Entrepreneurship is essential to this industry&#8212;but so is due diligence. Reopening a packing plant isn&#8217;t just about buying the facility and flipping the lights back on. This article is my attempt to break down what the pilot is, how the tech works, and where genetics may eventually fit into the picture.</p><div><hr></div><p><strong>LiDAR: What It Is and How It Works</strong></p><p>LiDAR is essentially a laser-based tape measure that builds a 3D map of whatever it scans.<br>If radar is the tool we rely on to watch storms on weather apps, LiDAR is its laser-powered cousin. Faster, more detailed, and capable of producing highly precise 3D images.</p><p>Despite sounding a bit sci-fi, LiDAR isn&#8217;t new to agriculture. One of the most visible examples is in <strong>John Deere&#8217;s See &amp; Spray</strong> Technology. Mounted systems use LiDAR to identify plants by height, distance, and plant shape, spraying herbicide only where it&#8217;s needed. Mapping field elevations, planning where to put tile, and designing terraces.</p><div><hr></div><p><strong>So, It Creates a 3D Map. Where&#8217;s the Value?</strong></p><p>Today&#8217;s feeder-cattle grades rely on human interpretation. The system works, but it&#8217;s inherently subjective. Here&#8217;s a quick recap of the major factors:</p><p><strong>1. Thriftiness</strong></p><p>Animals are classified as &#8220;thrifty&#8221; (expected to perform normally) or &#8220;unthrifty/inferior.&#8221; Everything else in the described grading system assumes the calf is thrifty.</p><p><strong>2. Frame Size</strong></p><p>Large (L), Medium (M), or Small (S), based on height and length relative to age. This gives feeders a rough idea of when cattle will likely reach Choice.</p><p><strong>3. Muscle Thickness</strong></p><p>Scored from No. 1 to No. 4, with No. 1 being the thickest and No. 4 the thinnest, these are used as a proxy for yield potential rather than just finish weight.</p><p>All of these are judged by the human eye. When their cattle don&#8217;t meet our thresholds, they don&#8217;t push back or criticize the standards. Instead, they lean into the discussion. There&#8217;s mutual respect, and that allows for real progress.</p><div><hr></div><h3>Two Camps, One Goal</h3><p>These conversations generally fall into two camps&#8212;different approaches, same destination: genetic improvement.</p><p><strong>The first group</strong> takes the feedback and acts on it immediately. They go out and find bulls that can move the herd forward in a single generation, bulls that bring more carcass weight, marbling, and average daily gain. The current sires that don&#8217;t measure up get culled without hesitation, and the next breeding decisions are made with clear intention.</p><p>You can sense the validation, they&#8217;ve been wanting to make these changes for a while, and now they have the data and direction to do it confidently.</p><p><strong>The second group</strong> understands they won&#8217;t be able to turn the ship that fast. They value their maternal base and the legacy it represents. In many of these herds, previous generations relied more on <strong>phenotype</strong>, how the cattle looked and functioned, rather than on genetic data.</p><p>These producers don&#8217;t want to lose that foundation, but they also know it&#8217;s time to evolve. They often feel caught between a rock and a hard place, which is understandable.</p><p>When working with these families, I make one thing clear from the start: the prior generation wasn&#8217;t &#8220;wrong.&#8221; They made the best decisions they could with the tools and priorities they had.</p><p>That&#8217;s where the most rewarding conversations begin. We talk as peers&#8212;about where they want their herd to go and how to get there over the next five or more years. Together, we identify key traits to build upon, whether that&#8217;s carcass weight in certain regions or marbling in others, and create a balanced, realistic roadmap for improvement.</p><div><hr></div><h3>The Power of Consistency</h3><p>That path is unique to every operation, but it almost always begins with one critical step: <strong>consistency of sires</strong>.</p><p>While time travel isn&#8217;t available to change past breeding decisions, we can look back and learn from them. In roughly 80% of herds, the major issue isn&#8217;t the genetics themselves&#8212;it&#8217;s the inconsistency of selection priorities year to year.</p><p>One season, a producer may chase calving ease and marbling. The next, they&#8217;ll pivot to milk and yearling weight. Even in maternally focused herds, this pattern repeats. The prior generation often bought bulls based on what they thought was important that year, and the focus changed every other breeding season.</p><p>I saw this firsthand in my own father-in-law&#8217;s herd. Years ago, when I was dating his daughter, he asked my opinion on his bull selection. If you&#8217;ve never heard his name, take a minute and look him up. He was instrumental in shaping the 1996 U.S. Farm Bill and taught thousands of undergrads about the intersection of farm policy and global trade. In the classroom, he was as entertaining as he was sharp&#8212;usually with a cigar in his mouth, a cane in his hand, and a one-liner ready for anyone not paying attention. He made sure we understood that American agriculture&#8217;s reach, and responsibility&#8212;extends far beyond our borders.</p><h3>The World Still Wants U.S. Beef</h3><p>That lesson rings louder today. The U.S. cow herd still hasn&#8217;t begun to expand, tightening supplies both at home and abroad. Fewer cow numbers means fewer high-quality beef cuts available for export, cuts that trading partners are willing to pay a premium for.</p><p>About 10&#8211;15% of U.S. beef is exported each year. That might not sound like much, but what matters is <em>what</em> we export. Japan and South Korea, our two top partners by value, account for the bulk of that business. Exports fall into two general categories:</p><ol><li><p><strong>Variety meats</strong> &#8212; tongues, livers, tripe, and other items that have limited domestic demand.</p></li><li><p><strong>High-value cuts</strong> &#8212; ribeyes, loins, short ribs, and other premium muscles that drive profitability.</p></li></ol><p>Those premium cuts make up roughly 55% of the total <em>value</em> of all U.S. beef exports. In other words, our global reputation is built squarely on the quality of what&#8217;s in the middle of the carcass.</p><h3>Why It Matters to Cow-Calf Producers</h3><p>So, what does this mean for the U.S. cow-calf producer?</p><p>If we let the quality of our product slip, others are ready to fill the void. Countries like Australia, others in the global south, and even parts of Europe are steadily improving their herds, adopting the genetics, management, and technologies that made U.S. beef the global standard. They&#8217;re learning fast. And they&#8217;re not content to stay in second place.</p><p>Now is not the time to ease off the throttle.</p><p>Beef is unique among globally traded commodities because its value hinges on <em>eating experience</em>. Grains and other proteins don&#8217;t face that same hurdle. They can be traded purely on volume and consistency. Beef, on the other hand, wins on tenderness, flavor, and marbling. And when we deliver a better experience, the market rewards us for it.</p><h3>Don&#8217;t Let Record Prices Breed Complacency</h3><p>Yes, calf prices are historically high right now. But that&#8217;s exactly when it&#8217;s easiest to forget the fundamentals. Strong markets can mask slippage in quality. And if we take our eye off the ball, the global market will find another supplier willing to meet those premium demands.</p><p>It might not feel like much at first, a few cents per pound here, a few less buyers there, but as every producer knows, every penny matters.</p><h3>A Reality Check, Not an Alarm</h3><p>The U.S. beef industry remains the world leader in both quality and innovation. We&#8217;re constantly adopting new tools, from genetic selection to feed efficiency technologies. But let&#8217;s not fool ourselves&#8212;competition is growing faster than many realize.</p><p>At Top Dollar Angus, we&#8217;re already fielding inquiries from overseas organizations wanting to understand our program and what &#8220;Top Dollar Verified&#8221; really means. But other times, the data sitting in front of us tells a different story&#8212;and too often, we ignore it.</p><p>I&#8217;ll admit, I too fall into this trap myself. When I see a data set that challenges my beliefs, my first instinct is to push back. But I&#8217;ve learned a simple truth: if the sample size is solid, the P-values and R-squared values hold up, and the methods are sound&#8212;then the numbers outweigh my gut.</p><p><strong>&#8220;Data! Progressive producers who see the feeder as their customer.<br>The difference? Location&#8212;<strong>which clearly didn&#8217;t limit their value</strong>.</p><p>Now, reputation? That&#8217;s a different story. The beef feeding industry is small, and bad reputations last far longer than good ones, <strong>so lets keep them positive no matter what.</strong></p><div><hr></div><h3>The Problem with &#8220;Mediocre Goals&#8221;</h3><p>I&#8217;m all for producers setting their own objectives. But pairing the word <em>goal</em> with <em>mediocre</em>? That&#8217;s a paradox. A goal is &#8220;the object of a person&#8217;s ambition or effort.&#8221; Mediocrity requires neither.</p><p>If the goal is to run a lower-input operation, fine&#8212;but expect to be paid below market average, year after year. And the math is unforgiving:</p><ul><li><p>Lower prices &#8594; less reinvestment.</p></li><li><p>Less reinvestment &#8594; poorer quality.</p></li><li><p>Poorer quality &#8594; even lower returns.</p></li></ul><p>Eventually, the bare-bones approach puts you out of business. U.S. beef didn&#8217;t become the world&#8217;s most sought-after protein through mediocrity&#8212;and those who were fine with producing mediocre cattle aren&#8217;t in the industry anymore.</p><div><hr></div><h3>Redefining &#8220;Value-Added&#8221;</h3><p>Later, the article questioned how far &#8220;value-added practices&#8221; can go before the market turns. My question is: <strong>What exactly are we calling value-added practices?</strong></p><p>If it&#8217;s castration, dehorning, and basic health programs&#8212;those aren&#8217;t &#8220;value-added.&#8221; They&#8217;re industry standards. Skip them, and you&#8217;re not just missing premiums&#8212;you&#8217;re taking a discount.</p><p>And the data is clear: regardless of market conditions, those practices consistently provide a positive return.</p><div><hr></div><h3>Where We Agree</h3><p>The latter half of the article finally aligned with my perspective&#8212;advocating for long-term planning and looking a decade ahead. That&#8217;s smart business. But again, the word &#8220;mediocre&#8221; doesn&#8217;t belong anywhere near conversations about improvement, strategy, or profitability.</p><p>Another producer quoted in that section echoed many of my points, stressing the need for data-backed strategies and real business models&#8212;not just looking at X&#8217;s and Y&#8217;s. That shift in tone was a breath of fresh air.</p><div><hr></div><h3>The Mixed Message Problem</h3><p>Here&#8217;s the real issue: the first half of the article gives producers permission to settle for &#8220;mediocre.&#8221; The second half quietly walks it back.</p><p>Once mediocrity becomes acceptable in a producer&#8217;s mind, it&#8217;s the beginning of the end. In no other industry can you be mediocre and expect to survive&#8212;so why should cattle production be different?</p><p>And let&#8217;s not forget who the ultimate customer is. It&#8217;s not just the feedyard, the packer, or the grocery store&#8212;it&#8217;s the consumer. Lowering our standards means giving them a mediocre product. But on that January day, I never would&#8217;ve guessed what he was about to propose.</p><blockquote><p>&#8220;Nate, I&#8217;ve got an interesting one for ya. I have a friend in Hungary who wants to learn more about the Top Dollar Angus program. He&#8217;s doing things right&#8212;focusing on genetics and working to improve both beef quality and genetic merit in Eastern Europe, very much on the cutting edge. I've talked with him several times and he is as good as they come.&#8221;</p></blockquote><p>At the time, we were deep into bull sale season, busy reviewing performance data from our seedstock partners. Still, the idea of collaborating with a seedstock producer overseas piqued my interest. I told Tigger to go ahead and introduce us by email when he had the chance.</p><div><hr></div><h2><strong>Enter Kun Ranch</strong></h2><p>In February 2024, Tigger made the introduction. The very next day, Peter Kun and I began learning more about each other&#8217;s operations.</p><p>Peter shared that his ranch, located inside a national park in Hungary, utilizes both Angus and Red Angus cattle&#8212;all registered with the American Angus Association and Red Angus Association of America. I let out a sigh of relief knowing his herd was already aligned with U.S. genetic standards.</p><p>Over the last five years, Peter had been using U.S. AI sires, and just in the past year had incorporated embryo transfer into his program. He was clearly serious about advancing genetics. But that wasn&#8217;t all&#8212;he also owned and operated a beef harvesting and processing plant. It quickly became clear that Dr. Kun had a comprehensive understanding of the entire beef supply chain in his country.</p><p>With the consumer in mind, Kun Ranch set its sights on earning the Certified Angus Beef (CAB) logo on their next generation of certificates&#8212;a lofty and commendable goal.</p><div><hr></div><h2><strong>The European Perspective</strong></h2><p>Rather than interpret the industry landscape in Europe myself, I asked Dr. Kun to share his outlook directly:</p><blockquote><p><strong>From Dr. Peter Kun:</strong><br>&#8220;The beef industry headed on a totally different way than what is usual in the States or in Australia. Here continental breeds are leading, such as Limousine, Charolais, Blond Aquitane, Simmental. They want bigger and bigger, more muscular animals that grow very fast.<br>But this goes against quality beef production. Too much muscle on an animal ends up in calving problems and reduces intramuscular fat.</p><p>I choose Angus for its traits.</p><p>Reaching the goal of mine to produce CAB and TDA branded registered bulls and heifers is a game changer episode in Europe. And still, Kun Ranch is the only one who can do it... but I am pretty sure that in a few years we will see a sharp changing of breeds and more demand for quality beef.</p><p>This 2-step verification system helps breeders and commercial cattle ranchers choose better genetics, and it&#8217;s also helpful for feedlot owners.&#8221;</p></blockquote><div><hr></div><h2><strong>From Mating Plans to Milestones</strong></h2><p>Once I better understood his program, we began evaluating his herd against <strong>Top Dollar Angus genetic requirements</strong>.</p><p>At the time, his current live cattle just missed the mark. It proves that producers in Europe can meet the same rigorous standards that drive premiums in the U.S.</p><p>And most importantly&#8212;it lays the foundation for a new era in global beef production.
