This week I visited a French stationery shop with my daughter’s rentrée list in hand. Same grid paper, same notebook and same cursive style every French kid learns, called Séyès lines, invented back in 1892. My daughter picked her notebook color and called it done. That was the whole negotiation. Nobody argues over supply lists here. The list barely changes classroom to classroom, region to region. France settled this back in 1882, when primary school became mandatory and the state decided every kid would learn to write the same way, in the same hand. Schools here fundraise too, mostly through a kermesse, the spring carnival with games and a raffle. Nobody’s raising money for glue sticks. Basic supplies stay cheap and close to identical everywhere, because the list itself was built that way.

A school like Mountain View Elementary, a pretty typical suburban elementary in Colorado, runs differently. The PTA is out there running bake sales and fun runs to cover whatever the budget missed. The supply list changes classroom to classroom, glue sticks for this room, dry-erase markers for that one. Cursive nearly disappeared from American classrooms when Common Core rewrote the rules in 2010, then crept back state by state, one legislature at a time, as districts decided on their own whether they wanted it back.

France runs its schools the way it runs its electricity grid: one system, same rules, everywhere. Every kid goes to the public school assigned to their address. You can’t transfer, not without switching to private. Lunch comes from a national decree: a starter, a protein with a vegetable side, a cheese course, fruit, fried food no more than a few times a month. Kids get about thirty minutes to eat, then close to an hour and a half in the schoolyard after, card games brought from home, jump ropes, whatever’s going that week, before heading back to class.

An American suburban school works more like a service you shop for. Open enrollment, charter options, magnet programs, a new learning app every year the district switches vendors on. And here’s the part that actually gets me: a lot of American parents spend real time and energy just trying to land a school with hours that match their work schedule. Ranking schools. Applying. Hoping. That entire fight barely exists here. Sure, France has private schools. It has schools people consider better than others. It has international schools for expat families who want something different. But most public schools run like infrastructure everyone can just live on, not a market you have to win.

My daughter walks to school in Nice, like most kids in her town. Cars still drop some kids off, but a decent public transit system and a dense street grid mean most families don’t need one, schools tend to sit close to home to begin with. At a school like Mountain View Elementary, arrival looks different: a line of cars in the drop-off lane, a bus route built around subdivisions with no sidewalks, a whole layout that assumes a car is always available. That’s not an accident. It’s what happens when a country builds its suburbs around cars first and makes the school system work around roads that already existed.

I don't think one of these systems is simply better than the other. They're built to answer different questions. Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité has been carved over French school doors since 1880, and égalité isn't decoration there. It's a structural requirement: the same notebook, the same lunch tray, the same walk to school, no matter your address. France treats every kid as a citizen first, which means the same rules apply no matter where you live. America treats every family as a customer first, which means you get to shop for the version that fits you, if you have the time and money to shop. Neither answer is wrong. But only one of them produces a country where every eight-year-old walking into CE2 this week is holding the same notebook, ruled the same way, learning to write it the same way their grandparents did, in a hand their own kids will probably learn too.

That’s not nostalgia. That’s infrastructure. And infrastructure, whether it moves electricity or teaches a kid to hold a pencil, tells you what a society actually decided to build, not just what it says it values.

Rio’s control room cut emergency response by 30 percent. It also has six hundred cameras and a standing tour for visiting dignitaries.

At Pueblo Bonito, the great house at the center of Chaco Canyon, the base walls run up to three feet thick, tapering thinner with every story up. That taper is real engineering, it’s how you hold up four stories of stone without steel. But the choice to build four stories at all wasn’t required by anything except ambition. The timber for Chaco’s great houses took more than 240,000 trees, hauled in from forests dozens of miles away with no draft animals and no wheel, while neighboring villages built ten rooms out of adobe and post. Nobody needed a building that size, someone wanted one.

That’s the kind of thing you start noticing once you’ve spent enough time reading old walls for a living. Archaeology isn't a hobby about the past, it's a discipline you use right now, to catch the present repeating itself when it thinks no one's looking.. Anthropology hands you the same trick from another angle. It turns you into an outsider looking at things you already look at every day, until the ordinary thing stops being ordinary and starts being evidence.

So what changed between the ninth century and now? Less than you’d think. We just built a new version of the same wall.

Rio de Janeiro’s Operations Center went up in under a year, built in partnership with IBM, after floods killed nearly seventy people in 2010. It works. Officials say it cut emergency response times by 30 percent, pulling live data from roughly thirty agencies into a single room, trash routes and disease outbreaks all on one wall of screens. It’s also been used as a flagship for IBM’s smart city platform ever since, walked through by delegations from other governments shopping for the same system. Hangzhou built something similar and larger, an AI system called City Brain that manages traffic signals and public services across the city, housed in a headquarters built to look less like an office and more like a cathedral. Both centers do genuine work. Neither one needed six hundred cameras and a standing tour to do that work. They got them anyway, partly because the state wanted to look capable, and partly because someone needed a showroom.

And here’s what I notice: the extra investment is never explained by the function. It’s explained by who’s watching the function happen.

The anthropologist James Scott has a name for this: legibility, from his book Seeing Like a State. States have always tried to flatten a messy, complicated population into something a ruler can actually see and act on, a census, a numbered street grid, a map with the empty spaces filled in. A control room is legibility with better lighting. Traffic and crime get compressed into color-coded panels on a curved screen, and an unmanageable city suddenly looks like something one person could run from a chair. That feeling is real. It’s also mostly theater, because the room only shows you what fits on a screen. The informal economy, the neighborhood that doesn’t generate clean sensor data, the problem that never reduces to a heatmap no matter how good the software gets: none of it makes it onto the wall.

That’s why command centers are good at the sensor-friendly problems, rerouting a flooded street, adjusting a signal, and quiet on the ones that don’t fit a dashboard, like housing. Nobody schedules a delegation to tour the housing shortage.

This is where the surveillance story flips.

We assume the danger runs one direction, the state watching the many. But a room built for press tours reverses that. The many are watching the few perform control. Every photo of that wall of screens in a press release, every foreign delegation walked past the monitors, is the state proving its competence to an audience, the same way four stories of stone proved something to whoever stood at the base of it a thousand years ago. The screens aren’t only there to see the city. They’re there to be seen seeing it.

None of this makes the rooms useless. Rio’s response times really did improve. But a room like this was built to be seen, and every wall of screens eventually gets swapped for a newer one. There’s another kind of infrastructure that was never built to be watched at all, and that’s the kind that actually outlives us.

We complain about paying for it and nobody tours a sewer line. But long after a control room’s been replaced, the pipe running to your toilet is still doing the same unglamorous job. Not only does it outlast the room, it tells a truer story about how you actually lived.

A war room, the Washington Monument, a statue of a general: these are the record of whoever had the power to build a monument to themselves. Infrastructure is the closest thing we have to a monument built for everyone else. Cities are going to need more of it, not less, as the climate gets harder to predict and the populations get bigger. That's not up for debate. But a sewer line isn't built for anyone in particular, which means it's built for everyone, and it'll still be underground doing its job long after the war rooms have been rebuilt twice over. That's the real record of a city: not who ran it, but how the rest of us lived.

My daughter’s last school before we left America had a poster on every wall, four zones stacked top to bottom, blue, green, yellow, red, each one naming a cluster of feelings. It hung in the library, the hallways, every classroom, and every single day issues were handled in the same way: feelings got handled before anything else, especially when someone was upset, uncooperative, but also happy or anxious.

Here in France her school does something different. No poster, no scale. Kids work through feelings in song, in poetry, in books read out loud, all the time, not just once someone is already yelling. Same instinct, different route. One waits for the eruption and hands you a chart. The other builds the vocabulary before the eruption happens.

My mother did something similar without a poster or a curriculum. She spent her days with disadvantaged kids, my friends, kids from the neighborhood, sitting with people in the middle of their hardest feelings and helping them find their way out. No training, no certificate. Watching her, I learned early that the humanities are not academic. They are how humans help each other grow. Two schools, one mother, none of them waiting until college to start discussing these with kids.

We do not fund that kind of teaching broadly in most American schools. Art programs get cut first. Humanities get called impractical, a nice thing to study if you can afford it. What survives is what can be measured, the grade, the test score, the number that gets a kid into the next room. We tell students the goal is passing, then act surprised when they find the fastest route to a pass. Right now that route runs through a chatbot, and most schools are spending their energy trying to catch it instead of asking why passing became the whole target.

The math professor who didn’t care about equations

I had a professor in college who taught statistics for the social sciences and ran every exam open book, open note, calculator allowed, computer allowed. None of it mattered to him. What he wanted to know was whether we could look at a problem and choose the right method and why. He was testing for judgment, not equations.

Japan never let the abacus disappear, even after calculators showed up. The soroban has been part of Japanese math class since the fifteen hundreds, and when the country built its modern school system in 1872, it wrote the soroban into the curriculum on purpose. Instructional hours dropped once digital calculators became common, but the government still kept a required unit in third and fourth grade, specifically so kids would get the feel of a number in their hands before using a screen to produce one. Nobody ripped it out and called it obsolete. They decided a kid still needed to build that sense herself first, calculator or not. We should be thinking about chatbots the exact same way.

A calculator forced math education to get more advanced, and advanced never meant more to memorize. It meant more judgment. Someone had to decide that once arithmetic got automated, the actual skill worth teaching was knowing which method to reach for and why. AI is forcing that same reckoning on writing and thinking, and we have not caught up. Advanced education is not more information crammed into a kid’s head. It is more self reflection, more philosophy, more practice examining your own judgment, starting young, exactly what the zones on my daughter’s old wall and the songs in her school here are quietly training. None of it is meant to be memorized. It is meant to be felt.

Here is what I notice. The people with the most money in the world are not spending it on AI bootcamps for their kids or another certificate. They are spending it on humanities, on philosophy, on literature, the kind of education that produces judgment instead of competence.

So if you want to raise a billionaire, or become one, the humanities are apparently where you start.

What a tool cannot fake

John Borneman, a retired Princeton anthropology professor, wrote recently in Anthropology News about coming out of retirement to teach eighteen year olds, worried like every colleague about AI in student essays. He solved it without a single detector. He assigned personal essays instead, asking students to sit inside a real memory and write into it honestly. One student wrote about a summer internship at a bank in London, the suit, the compliments, and the quiet realization months later, while writing, that she had spent three months performing a version of herself that was not actually her. No model could have produced that sentence, because no model lived that summer. AI can imitate the shape of insight. It cannot have been the person the insight happened to.

Testing for the human instead of the grammar

This is the actual fix, and it has nothing to do with detection software. Test for depth instead. If a student runs a paragraph through a chatbot but the idea inside it is genuinely theirs, sharpened by something they noticed or lived, I do not care what helped type it. The moment a piece of writing carries somebody’s real perspective, it stops mattering what tool touched it along the way. What should worry us is not the chatbot, it is writing with nothing underneath it at all, whether a machine produced that or a bored teenager did it herself.

Ask a kid to write about her own life and she does not reach for a chatbot in the first place. A ballet class, a rough week, a dumb thing that happened at recess, kids are happy to talk about that on their own, no prompting needed. Nobody has to catch that kind of writing, because nobody wants to fake it. It is the one assignment a chatbot has nothing to add to.

That is what a poster on a wall in America and a song in a classroom in France and one mother with no training ever understood. You cannot prepare a child for a life of grades by skipping the part where she learns to name what she feels, and you cannot prepare a young adult for a life of work by testing whether she memorized a formula instead of whether she understands what it is for. The tool was never the threat. Testing for the wrong thing was. So test for the human and the rest will take care of itself.

I read Shakespeare for fun in high school. Interview with the Vampire was usually in my other hand. I was the kind of teenager who read everything and rationed nothing.

My mother was an English teacher. Long before I picked up either book on my own, she had already spent my childhood drilling sentence structure into me, showing me the same idea said in four different ways, handing me sources that had nothing in common except that they were well written. That gave me real facility with English. It is the reason French is coming easier than it has any right to.

But facility with a language and skill at communicating in it are two different things. It took a particular classroom to see the gap.

That classroom was interpersonal communication. I picked it up almost by accident, in a community college class, before I transferred anywhere more serious. It turned out to be the better on ramp into anthropology than anything literary ever was, closer to that discipline than sociobiology or psychology. Both start from the same question: not what a sentence means on the page, but what a group of people actually do with it.

Corporate communication gets filed under soft skills. It shouldn’t be. It is linguistics wearing a badge, built around how people who speak differently but still manage to build a shared meaning under a deadline.

These days I teach data and technology to ESL students. Most of them are not choosing between one native language and English. English is often their third language, sometimes their fourth, stacked on top of two others they already use to get through work, family, and every errand in between.

Their technical vocabulary is thin by design, borrowed just enough to name the job. And yet they describe a broken workflow, a bad dataset, a business problem, faster and more precisely than plenty of native English speakers I have sat across a table from. They have no spare words for hedging. No room to sound impressive. Every word has to carry its full weight. What looks like a limitation from the outside is, from inside the conversation, a forcing function toward clarity.

Rebecca at The Strategic Linguist wrote a piece called Written as if Watched that gets at something close to this, about the words we choose to describe AI and the agency we hand it without meaning to. Reading it, I recognized the same move happening between fluent and less fluent speakers. We credit a fluent voice with communicating simply because it performs the shape of intent: the polish, the confidence. We skip the step of checking whether any meaning actually changed hands. Calling someone articulate is its own kind of unearned credit.

Communication is tribal. We reward the version that sounds most like us, the version with our idioms and our filler and our shared references, and mistake that comfort for actual understanding. A fluent speaker can hide inside all of that. They can sound articulate in a room and still fail to move a single decision forward, because sounding right and being understood are not the same event.

A person still building their vocabulary does not get that option. They have to check, plainly, whether the thing they said landed. That habit is not a workaround for a language gap. It is what communication actually requires. Most of us stopped doing it the day we got fluent enough to stop trying.

I think about this against Maslow, of all things, because I keep circling the same question in my own French classes. Am I after a deep grammatical command of this language, the kind my mother built into me in English, one corrected sentence at a time? Or am I after the thing that actually gets me invited to stay in a conversation at the boulangerie, the market, the school gate?

Those two goals feel like they should compete, as if one has to outrank the other. They don't. Maslow's hierarchy was never a ranking of what is more admirable. It is a stack, and belonging sits underneath self actualization because it holds the rest of it up, not because it matters less. Self actualization without belonging is not a higher achievement. It is a room with nobody in it.

A person can master every rule of a language and still stand outside the room when it matters most. A person with two hundred honest words can build an entire life in a place where they will never pass a grammar exam. Where they are trusted at the market, waved at from across the street, folded into a neighborhood one visit at a time. That person, far from being behind, already has what all that grammar was supposed to earn them.

I am not arguing against depth. My mother’s drilling is the reason French is coming easier than I expected, and I would not trade that foundation for anything. But I no longer confuse depth of vocabulary with depth of connection. They are different skills, built by different work.

My students showed me this long before Rebecca gave me the words for it. I was the one behind, dressed in better grammar, still learning how to be understood.

I spent the last few weeks organizing scattered observations into something a stranger could actually read. Field notes from walking Nice’s neighborhoods and verifying the data myself, checking which streets people actually favored, where the shade sat in the afternoon, what the sea breeze felt like in one part of the city versus another a few blocks over. A voice memo I’d recorded walking home, working through why what I was noticing on the ground mattered more than what any sensor was recording. I fed all of it into an AI tool and asked it to help me find the shape of the argument I already knew was in there. Computers have been the tool for my entire career, long before AI showed up. Just because I code doesn’t mean I let the machine do the thinking. I come up with the ideas. AI helps me put them together.

That is the entire confession Substack now wants from me. A percentage. A “How I make this” statement, staked to my name, so a reader can decide whether the thinking underneath is real.

Meanwhile Martha Stewart publishes a newsletter written by a team she employs and discloses nothing, because nobody built a scanner for that.

The distinction Substack is drawing runs along the wrong fault line entirely. It isn’t asking whether a human did the thinking. It’s asking whether the labor was visible to a machine trained to spot a particular kind of pattern. A brand with a staff of six ghostwriters clears the scan every time, because six humans typing produces six humans’ worth of syntax, however hollow the thinking behind it. A solo writer who spent weeks walking a city and organizing what she found gets flagged, because one person compressing that work into an evening of drafting leaves a different signature than one person writing slowly from scratch.

I have spent fifteen years doing GIS work for a utility company, which means I have spent fifteen years watching software organize things a human still had to interpret. A GIS platform will tell you where every gas line in a city runs. It will not tell you that the billing records don’t match what’s actually in the ground, or why that gap costs the company money every month it goes unnoticed. I built a map once that found losses nobody’s official records showed, and the map didn’t find them. I did. The software organized the evidence I was already looking for, the same way the AI organizes what I notice walking a city now.

AI is doing the same job on my writing that GIS software did on utility data. It is a spellchecker that got smarter, not a mind that got involved. It finds the shape in what I already noticed and helps me lay it out faster than I could alone. The thinking is mine the same way the losses in that map were mine. Nobody asked a GIS analyst to disclose which parts of a spatial model a computer rendered versus which parts a human decided mattered.

What Substack is actually building, whether it means to or not, is an advantage for whoever can afford the labor to look human. That is not a small distinction to a solo writer competing against outlets with editorial staff and marketing budgets, because it hands the platform back to whoever already had the resources to win it. AI was supposed to be the thing that let one person do what used to take a newsroom. Substack is telling that one person to prove she didn’t use the thing that made her competitive, while the newsroom’s byline sails through untouched.

There’s a second insult buried under the first one, and it’s aimed at readers, not writers. The scanner assumes you can’t tell good writing from slop without a percentage doing it for you. I don’t believe that, and I don’t think you do either. Readers have been sorting authentic voice from filler since long before anyone needed a machine to certify it, because recognizing another person’s genuine attention is one of the oldest skills we have. A community that trusts its own readers to make that call is a community. A community handed a scanner and told to check before it believes anything is a population being managed.

I’ll keep telling you how I work, because that’s the honest version of the same instinct Substack is chasing. But I’m not running my notes through anything to prove the thinking was mine before I hit publish. You already know what that looks like when you read it.

On June 23, France recorded its hottest day since measurements began in 1947. Two days later, EDF started taking nuclear reactors offline because the rivers that cool them were running too warm. Across Europe, the heatwaves of this summer have been linked to thousands of excess deaths. Wildfires are burning in France and Spain. In Colorado, where I spent years excavating sites and later mapping utility lines, people died in wildfires before June was over.

In America that same month, the national conversation was about the Reflecting Pool being repainted flag blue, and a cage fight on the South Lawn of the White House. That is not an accident. Spectacle is cheaper than adaptation, and it photographs better.

But climate change does not need anyone to talk about it. It shows up in the bills. Climate-driven crop damage has been pushing food prices up for years, and researchers now estimate it already costs the average American household several hundred dollars annually. Residential electricity prices have risen almost 40 percent since 2021. This time there is a war in Iraq that people can point to, another round of strikes and militias and oil markets flinching on cue. But the crops were already failing before the missiles started. Prices will keep climbing after this war ends the way they climbed through the years there was no war to blame, because heat does not need a ceasefire to end.

So the question worth asking is not whether climate change is real. The prices have settled that. The question is whether the systems we depend on were built to handle it.

I spent over fifteen years mapping American utility infrastructure, and here is what most people never see: there is no American grid. There are roughly 3,000 separate utilities and 66 balancing authorities, stitched into three big interconnections, one of which is Texas, which stays disconnected on purpose so it can avoid federal oversight. In February 2021 that choice froze in the dark, and hundreds of people died a few miles from the largest energy reserves on the continent.

Americans made real sacrifices for this system. Farmers gave up land for transmission corridors. Whole towns taxed themselves to string wire to the last house on the last road. The story we told ourselves was that all of it bought the best grid in the world, more advanced than anything in old Europe. But the system those sacrifices built was never designed as a system. It accumulated. Every utility boundary is an accident of history, a franchise agreement from 1910, a merger from 1953, a bankruptcy from 1987. Infrastructure has stratigraphy, and the American grid is a hundred years of local decisions compacted into place, with each layer legally defended by the monopoly sitting on top of it.

France went the other way. One dominant utility, fully renationalized in 2023, running one integrated system. The EU then connected national grids across borders and requires countries to share capacity, so when French reactors throttle down in a heatwave, imports flow in from neighbors. It is not invulnerable. Losing 6 percent of the nuclear fleet to warm rivers in June is a real warning about centralization, because a single design flaw repeats across the whole fleet. But one operator can see the entire system, model it, and redesign it. Coordination is not a negotiation among 3,000 parties. It is the default.

This is where systems thinking comes in, because the current American answer to grid fragility is AI. Smarter load forecasting, automated balancing, algorithms managing demand. I believe in these tools. I built some of their ancestors. But look at what AI is actually doing to the grid right now, before it saves it. Data centers filed requests for hundreds of gigawatts of new power connections last year, more than the entire country consumed in 2023. Utilities are asking regulators for tens of billions in rate increases to build the substations and transmission lines those data centers need, and the cost lands on ordinary ratepayers, the same households already paying more for groceries and air conditioning. The power itself gets diverted toward training models, which raises regional demand and, in places still burning gas to meet it, raises emissions along with it. So the fix for climate adaptation is currently a machine that makes households pay to build its own house, while making the underlying problem worse. AI will not fix the American grid, for a reason that has nothing to do with the technology.

AI is only as good as the system it can see, and the American grid is designed so that no one can see it. Each utility’s operational data is proprietary. Each vendor’s software is secret sauce behind a closed door, forbidden by contract and by competition from talking to the system next door. You can hand a brilliant model to each of 3,000 utilities and get 3,000 locally optimized silos that still cannot coordinate a heatwave response across a state line. The intelligence is not the bottleneck. The permission structure is. A disconnected monopoly with a captive regulator has no incentive to share the data that adaptation requires, and no algorithm can code its way through a legal wall. Crap in, crap out applies to institutions the same way it applies to databases.

Anthropologists have a term for what a grid actually is: a material record of how a society decided to cooperate. The French system records a decision to cooperate at national scale, then continental scale. The American system records a decision to never quite cooperate at all, and to call the resulting fragments freedom.

Neither grid was designed for climate change. Only the European grid was designed to be redesigned.

Someone told me recently that anthropology would be hard to do in France without the language. It was practical advice, kindly meant, and probably accurate in the way practical advice usually is. But it stayed with me longer than it should have, because the history of my field is largely a history of outsiders. Ethnography as a method was built by people who arrived somewhere they did not belong and had to begin with the only tool available to anyone in that position, which is careful attention.

I have been thinking about what that tool is worth right now, because the timing matters. The climate is changing faster than the infrastructure built to handle it. Hurricanes intensify overnight. Tornadoes show up outside their old seasons and outside their old geography. Heat settles into cities that were designed, street by street, for a cooler century. Every one of these problems crosses borders, which means every one of them requires people who can communicate across cultures. And this is exactly the moment when much of the world is turning inward, when the instinct under stress is to close ranks with the people who already speak your language.

So the question I keep circling here in Nice, as an American trying to find my footing in the French job market with my skillset, is the same question every ethnographer as an outsider has had to face: What do I have that travels?

The first answer is a map. Most of us met our first map in grade school, and most of us needed very little instruction, because a map works the way vision works. You look down at the drawing, you look up at the world, and something in you connects the two. We were drawing the world long before most of us were writing about it. People scratched the shapes of rivers and territories into clay and bone before most writing systems existed, which tells you the skill is older than the alphabet and closer to instinct than to education. A map made in one language can be read in another. In twenty years of GIS work I watched engineers, field crews, and executives who could barely sit through the same meeting all lean over the same map and understand each other. There are very few tools like that.

The second answer is observation itself. When a biologist encounters a species she has never studied, she does not begin with conclusions. She sits still, sometimes for months, and watches how the animal actually moves through its day, where it goes for water, what it avoids, what it repeats. The comparison I want to make here is not between people and animals. It is between two kinds of observers, because the discipline is identical. Openness first. Then a hypothesis. Then the honest work of testing it and being willing to watch it fail. That sequence is what science actually is, underneath the equipment. And studying humans comes with an advantage no field biologist gets, which is that people can tell you when your hypothesis is wrong. The subject can correct the observer. That is not a limitation of anthropology. That is the best peer review there is.

This is where smart cities come in. A smart city knows what its sensors were built to count. It counts traffic volumes, air particles, energy loads, water flow. It does not see the woman who takes the long way to the market because the short way has no shade, and shade is the difference between an errand and an emergency in a heat wave. It does not see which neighbors check on which neighbors when the power fails, or why one street empties at noon in August while the next one does not. Those patterns are the adaptations, the actual human responses to a changing climate, and no sensor was designed to capture them because no one who designed the sensors knew to look. Someone has to sit still and watch. Someone has to observe first and hypothesize second. The cities that get this right will be the ones that treat observation as infrastructure, as essential as the pipes.

I do not have the language yet. I am working on it, slowly, with all the grace of a person learning French at fifty. But I am starting to think the person who told me anthropology would be hard here had it partly backwards. The language gap is real. It is also temporary. The method is permanent, and it is portable, and right now it is scarce in exactly the places that need it most. I have a map and I have the patience to watch. Both of them travel.

The Côte d’Azur has always been warm. This has been, for nearly two centuries, the entire appeal. People have been coming here since the 1800s specifically because the winters are mild and the summers are long, and the Mediterranean light has a quality that painters and retirees and eventually everyone else has been trying to describe and relocate to ever since.

But warm is a relative term, and the summers here now are something different.

This past summer, Nice crossed 38 degrees Celsius on multiple days. That is 100 Fahrenheit for anyone still working in American units. The kind of heat where the pavement radiates back at you by 10 AM and the apartment is unlivable by two in the afternoon. The Alpes-Maritimes, the department that contains Nice, has recorded a measurable upward trend in mean summer temperatures over the last three decades, consistent with broader Mediterranean basin warming that climate scientists have been tracking with increasing alarm. The Mediterranean region is warming roughly 20 percent faster than the global average. That number sounds technical until you are standing in your kitchen at 2 PM trying to figure out when to cook dinner.

I spent fifteen years mapping utility infrastructure. Water systems, energy grids, power delivery networks, the bones of how cities actually function. When you work in GIS at that level, you start reading built environments differently. You notice the age of the pipes relative to the age of the problem. You develop a professional habit of asking what something was designed for, and whether that is still true.

Southern France was built for this climate, and in most ways it still holds.

The older buildings here were built to last, and they do. Stone walls, high ceilings, interior shutters, narrow windows angled to catch the breeze. These are not aesthetic choices. They are an accumulated engineering response to centuries of Mediterranean summers. In a typical year you open the windows, the air moves in off the sea, and the stone does the rest. It is not air conditioning but it works, and for most of the history of this city it has been enough.

What has changed is not the buildings. It is what the buildings depend on.

The system requires a cool sea breeze, and the sea breeze requires the sea to be cool. The Mediterranean off Nice usually stays cold enough to be unswimmable until late July. That is part of the rhythm of the Côte d’Azur season, part of why things run the way they do. This week, at the end of June, the water was warm enough to swim in. The breeze is still coming in off the water. It is just not the same breeze it used to be.

Central air conditioning in French residential buildings is still uncommon. This is not a cultural eccentricity. It is a rational response to a climate that, until recently, did not require it. The infrastructure was adequate for the conditions it was built to serve. The conditions have changed faster than the infrastructure.

Smart cities initiatives across France are working on this, building sensor networks, mapping heat islands, planning green corridors. The data collection is real. So is the gap between the plan and the summer.

But while the plans develop, the people adapt.

What I noticed this summer, and I notice things by watching what people actually do rather than what the infrastructure is supposed to allow, is that the French have done what humans have always done when conditions exceed the built environment’s capacity. They reached for whatever was at hand.

The most interesting thing I have seen this summer is not digital. It is chalk.

In neighborhoods across the Côte d’Azur, people have begun brushing a layer of wet chalk across the outside of their windows. The physics behind it is simple. Standard glass lets shortwave solar radiation pass straight through, where it hits floors and furniture, converts to longwave infrared heat, and gets trapped inside. A coat of white chalk on the glass reflects that radiation before it ever enters the building, dropping indoor temperatures by an estimated three to seven degrees Celsius in highly exposed rooms. It costs almost nothing, requires no landlord approval, and leaves no permanent mark. In a city where millions of residents live in historic buildings where drilling into stone for an air conditioning unit is either structurally forbidden or blocked by preservation law, chalk is an immediate line of defense that the building stock was never designed to need.

There is something almost archaeological about watching a city rediscover this. It is not a new technique. It is just one that had not been necessary for a while.

The collective rituals are equally instructive. A shared clock has emerged across the neighborhood that nobody officially announced. From morning until dusk, everything stays closed, shutters sealed, windows shut against the day’s heat. At sunset the neighborhood opens at once, catching the cooler air before the stone walls begin releasing what they have absorbed. Inside, the old method has come back: wet sheets hung in open windows at night, or draped in front of fans during the day, cooling the air as it moves through. Grandmothers have always known this. The difference is that now everyone is doing it.

The shopping mall near my neighborhood became a different kind of place this summer. On the hottest afternoons it filled with people who were not particularly shopping. Families with children in the corridors. Older residents settled into the common areas. And in the food court there was an indoor karaoke setup that drew a late-afternoon crowd that was genuinely skilled. This was not shy amateur hour. These were people who came to sing, and the audience was there because they needed somewhere cool and found something worth watching.

There is an archaeology to all of this. People did not wait for the infrastructure to catch up. They found the available resources, physical and social, and reorganized their lives around them. They did what every human population has done when climate conditions shifted, reorganized their daily rhythms around the new constraints, built community in the spaces the new conditions made available.

The heat map shows the temperature trend. It does not show the karaoke.

What the data captures is measurable and important. What it cannot capture is the human system that forms in response to it, the way a grandmother’s technique goes mainstream in a single summer, the way a food court becomes a gathering place, the way people improvise infrastructure out of whatever is at hand.

That improvisation is also data. It is just harder to map.

I was climbing a beach access staircase in sandals at eleven o’clock at night, feeling for the next step in the dark, when a young man stopped his conversation mid-sentence, turned around, and offered me his hand.

He was maybe twenty-five. He was talking to two women. He stopped without being asked, guided me up to the landing, made sure I had footing, and returned to his conversation as though nothing unusual had happened. Because here, it hadn’t. A few hours earlier, another young man had done the same thing at a different staircase.

This was the Fête de la Musique in Nice, the annual summer solstice celebration, June 21, when every street and plaza and stretch of the Promenade des Anglais becomes a stage, and not metaphorically. It was a Sunday night, the busiest Sunday night I have ever seen. There was a heat wave pressing down on the coast. There were tourists from across the world. There were thousands of people drinking along the beach well past midnight, and there were children, drinking Oasis and dancing alongside the adults as though the night belonged to them too, because it did. A small fight was reported somewhere in the city, noted briefly in the local paper as the only disturbance on a night of culture.

An anthropologist reading that sentence would find it interesting for what it omits. In most cities, a single minor altercation at a gathering of this size, on a night this hot, with this much alcohol moving through a crowd, would not be considered newsworthy. It would be expected. The fact that it required a newspaper to mention tells you something about the baseline.

So the question is not why people were well-behaved. The question is what had been built so that well-behaved was simply the easiest thing to be.

Start with the food. The Fête in Nice is not organized around a handful of food trucks stationed at a central point where thousands of people queue in the heat and grow impatient before they have even eaten. The food was distributed across the entire city. Corner bodegas stayed open. Ice cream shops stayed open, which in a heat wave is not incidental. The ability to walk thirty meters to a kiosk and get something cold without fighting a crowd raises the threshold for frustration considerably. Comfortable, fed people do not behave the same way as hungry, overheated ones. That is not a cultural observation. It is a biological one.

The drinks followed the same logic. People were carrying small plastic bottles of white wine and spritzers, not hard liquor, not the kind of energy drink formulated to mix stimulant chemistry with a sense of invincibility. White wine is a socializing drink, not an escalation drink, and the difference is structural as much as chemical. In France, wine is affordable and available. It is not something people front-load before arriving because they know the cost at the venue will make it inaccessible. When a resource is distributed rather than scarce, people stop hoarding it. Scarcity produces a different kind of crowd than abundance does.

The tram kept running. Part of a line near the Promenade was temporarily rerouted to make pedestrian crossings safer, but it was not shut down. Anyone who walked a few minutes could board without difficulty, and people did, without pushing or rushing. Nobody was calculating whether to leave early before the last train. That particular anxiety, the logistical desperation of a crowd with no way home, changes human behavior in gatherings in ways we rarely name until we experience a night where it simply is not present.

There was a constant police presence throughout the evening, but no signs, no instructions, no checkpoints. Officers moved through the crowd while people danced around them. The enforcement was visible but it was not the architecture of the evening, and that distinction matters.

The music followed the same principle of distribution. The Fête has no headliner, no main stage, no curatorial voice deciding what is worth hearing. Anyone who wants to play is invited to play, wherever they can find space. On Sunday night in Nice, Goth was happening twenty meters from 80s pop near the beach.

While the quieter acts found their place further into the city, scattered near tram stations as though transit infrastructure and musical infrastructure had agreed on the same logic.

A father and son played accordion at a street corner. A friend made her musical debut, a cappella, in a small restaurant alcove tucked away from the waterfront noise, and people stopped with their children to listen to a few songs before moving on. Nobody programmed that contrast, it was the natural result of radical inclusion.

And then there were the children. Not at home, not with babysitters, not quietly removed from the adult world of a late summer night. They were present in the full sense of the word, which meant every adult nearby was calibrated to that presence, and that calibration quietly reconfigures the social contract of the whole crowd. The French seem to have understood this and built it into the event itself.

This is what archaeologists and urban planners mean when they talk about built environment shaping behavior. The city did not manage the Fête de la Musique through warnings and enforcement, through signs about responsible drinking or wristbands and security checkpoints. It built the physical conditions under which good behavior was simply less effort than the alternative. It distributed food so no one was hungry and frustrated. It kept the infrastructure running so no one was stranded. It made wine accessible and kept supercharged energy out of the equation. It opened the stage to everyone, from the DJ on the beach to the father and son with their accordion. It included the children.

The young man who stopped to help me up the stairs was not exceptional. He was a product of a system that had not built the conditions for him to be otherwise.

We tend to describe nights like that one as evidence of something ambient and cultural, something in the French temperament that resists easy explanation. But ambient culture has a structure underneath it, and that structure is built. It can be studied and it can be replicated.

When I excavate a site, the discard pile is where I learn the truth. A broken pot tells me about clay and fire. A pot that was perfectly good and got buried anyway tells me about something far more interesting, about belief and fear and who decided the thing could no longer be touched. People rarely throw away what fails. They throw away what they have decided is dangerous, or impure, or no longer theirs to keep. The midden is not a record of malfunction. It is a record of meaning.

I thought about that on Friday when Anthropic disabled two of its most powerful models. Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 had launched only three days earlier, billed as the most capable tools the company had ever shipped. Then at 5:21 in the evening Eastern time a directive arrived from the U.S. Commerce Department. The models were now subject to export controls, blocked for any foreign national, including the company’s own overseas employees. Anthropic could not separate foreign users from American ones fast enough to comply selectively, so it buried both for everyone. A tool reachable by hundreds of millions of people at lunch was gone by dinner.

It did not break. By the company’s own account, which it is openly disputing even as it complies, the trigger was a narrow method of bypassing the model’s safety filters. The tool worked exactly as designed. It got buried for what people decided it could mean.

To read the burial honestly, you have to extend the timeline, the way you would read stratigraphy. The layer underneath this one was laid down in February. The Pentagon demanded that Anthropic drop its restrictions on two uses, mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons. The company refused. Within hours the administration ordered every federal agency to cut ties, and the Defense Secretary branded Anthropic a supply chain risk, a label normally reserved for companies treated as extensions of a foreign adversary. Anthropic sued. A federal judge called the designation what the government’s own records showed it to be, retaliation for the company’s speech, writing that no American firm should be branded a saboteur of the United States for disagreeing with its government. That is the layer beneath Fable. I am not going to tell you the June recall was revenge for February. I am going to lay the two layers side by side and let you read the soil yourself.

What the sequence exposes is the thing we most want to believe about our tools and least want to test. We treat software as a neutral instrument, like a socket wrench or a wall outlet, something that simply does what you ask regardless of who you are. The Fable recall says otherwise. A frontier model is treated as a geopolitical asset first and a consumer tool second. When the company tried hardest to keep its tool neutral, to refuse the surveillance and the autonomous weapons, that neutrality itself was read as defiance and answered as a threat. The founders who imagined they could build globally disruptive infrastructure while standing apart from state power learned that there is no apart. The tool was never neutral. It was always a piece on a board, and other people were playing.

This is the pattern I keep finding in the ground. We do not discard objects because they stop working. We discard them because of the meaning we have draped over them, and meaning is manufactured, not contained in the thing. A figure gets smashed and buried not because it broke but because a belief shifted and the object became unsafe to keep. Fable is the modern version. A tool advertised as almost too powerful to release, made by a company that had already been branded a risk, became impossible to leave reachable. The story did the burying, not the code.

There is a harder lesson underneath for everyone building on these systems. Access is not ownership. What you reach through someone else’s server, governed by terms you did not write, can be repossessed in an evening by people whose reasoning you learn about secondhand. A clay pot from three thousand years ago has outlasted a model that existed for seventy-two hours, because the pot was buried in the ground and the model was buried in a vault you were only renting.

So when a tool vanishes, do not study the tool. Study the story told about it, and the layer beneath that story, because that is what dug the hole. Fable did not fail. It was buried alive, and the discard pile, as always, remembers the belief long after it forgets the object.

I have been a GIS analyst for over twenty years. I have built spatial representations of utility systems, mapped archaeological sites across Colorado and Wyoming and Belize, and spent more hours than I can count making sure that what appeared on a screen accurately matched what existed in the ground. And the thing I keep coming back to, after all of that, is a distinction that sounds obvious once you say it out loud but almost nobody actually lives by: a representation of a place is not the same as the place.

That gap is worth paying attention to, because we confuse the two constantly, in navigation, in careers, in expertise, in language, in almost every domain where we think we understand something because we have a picture of it.

When I moved to Nice, I thought I understood where I was going. I had satellite imagery, I had looked at the streets from above dozens of times before we arrived, I could describe the layout of the city from memory. The first time I tried to walk to the market from our apartment, I got genuinely lost. Not because the streets were in the wrong place. They were exactly where they were supposed to be. I got lost because knowing the geometry of a place and knowing the place are two entirely different things. The satellite view I had studied did not show me which streets smell like fresh bread in the morning, which alleyway fills with people at noon, or how the Old Town moves, which is not like a grid at all but like something that grew over centuries and has no interest in being intuitive to newcomers. I had studied the representation. I had not yet learned the city.

Here is the thing GIS teaches you if you do it long enough: location is not just coordinates. It is context, history, adjacency, and meaning. A coordinate tells you where something is in relation to a datum, a mathematical reference point that humans invented so that we could agree on measurements. The place itself does not care about datums. It was there before we measured it. Every representation of a place is a simplification, and every simplification leaves things out, and the things that get left out are usually the things that matter most when you are actually standing there trying to understand what you are looking at. Every GIS analyst learns this early, or they make expensive mistakes.

What archaeology adds to that understanding is a method for what to do about it. When you excavate a site, you do not work from a picture of the site. You make the picture as you go, and you understand from the beginning that your picture will be incomplete because the act of excavating destroys the evidence. You cannot un-dig a unit. So you learn to pay close attention to what is directly in front of you: the soil texture, the color change at a layer boundary, the artifact that shows up somewhere you did not expect it, the feature that does not match the interpretation you started with. Your initial understanding of the site is a hypothesis. The site itself teaches you how wrong the hypothesis was, and that is where the actual work begins. Archaeology trains you to hold your interpretation loosely and let the evidence revise it, rather than forcing the evidence to fit the story you already had.

I did not apply this to French.

I spent months studying grammar and vocabulary before I moved here, building a careful structural understanding of the language. Then I got into actual conversations with French people, at actual speed, with people who had no reason to slow down for me, and I discovered that what I had built was a useful scaffold with almost no relationship to how the language actually moves. I knew where the subjunctive was supposed to go. I did not know French. The difference is not small. One is a diagram of the system. The other is what happens when real people use the system with all its shortcuts and regional patterns and sounds that no diagram prepares you for. Presence over time is the only thing that closes that gap. You have to be in it, fumbling, getting corrected, losing the thread and finding it again.

This is the argument I keep returning to, across all three of these things. The representation, whether it is a satellite image, a site map, or a grammar textbook, is not the knowledge. It is the beginning of the knowledge. It tells you enough to get started. It does not tell you what it feels like to be wrong in the specific ways you will be wrong, or what you will notice once you have been paying attention long enough to see past the obvious. That part only comes from time spent in the actual place, whether the place is a city, an excavation unit, or a language.

What I find interesting is how rarely we treat credentials and frameworks the same way. A credential is a record of time spent with the representation. It describes a path through a body of knowledge, and it is genuinely useful as a starting point. It is not the same as judgment, which comes from having been in the work long enough to understand what the credential does not cover. I have seen analysts with every qualification possible make decisions that a less credentialed person with more field time would never make, because they were navigating by the diagram and had not yet spent enough time in the location to know what the diagram leaves out.

I am still learning Nice. Some mornings I walk a street I am certain I have walked before and realize I have never actually been on it. Living here has taught me to stop treating that feeling as a failure. It is just evidence that the city is more than I have gotten to yet.

The willingness to be wrong, and to stay present with that instead of rushing past it, is the thing that actually produces understanding. We do not talk about it that way. We treat expertise as a state you arrive at, something you either have or are working toward. But every field I have spent real time in has shown me the opposite. The people who understand things most clearly are the ones who have been wrong the most often and gave themselves permission to stay there long enough to learn something.

I had dinner Saturday with a friend who has worked for the same company for fifteen years.

She told me she chose logistics over accounting because she likes logistics better. Not because of pay differentials or long-term market projections but because she likes it. She went to a trade school, not a university. She has a best friend she met at this job. She loves her colleagues. She genuinely looks forward to going in.

Last week, her company organized a day out. Thirty people, split into two groups. Half went into a cave for a guided tour while the other half did geocaching in the forest. Then they all came together for lunch, outside, in the trees. Then the groups switched. The cave people went into the forest hunting coordinates. The geocachers went underground. €20 per person. Children were welcome. She said it was a great day.

I sat across from her and thought about every corporate outing I was ever required to attend.

There is a lie told repeatedly to American workers, and it is this: the only incentive that actually works is money. I heard this as a young manager, said with the confidence of people who believe they have figured something out. The real motivators, they told us, were bonuses. Pay increases. Compensation structures. Everything else was window dressing. People are rational actors and rational actors respond to cash.

The problem is that companies stopped wanting to pay the cash. So now they try other things. Early morning hikes framed as team building. Office coffee bars framed as culture. Forced fun framed as belonging. And somehow they still believe the underlying logic was correct, just improperly funded. If we can get the community feel without paying for it, the thinking goes, we’ve solved the problem.

What they’ve actually done is identified the symptom and refused to treat it.

My friend’s company pays her fairly. She has time off that she actually uses. She has colleagues she considers friends because they have spent time together in ways that weren’t mandatory or surveilled. The cave trip cost €20 and produced something that a thousand differently-structured performance bonuses could not.

Meanwhile, American productivity metrics keep climbing in certain categories while the actual output gets worse. The food is worse. The products break faster. The customer service is a labyrinth designed to exhaust you into giving up. The infrastructure is crumbling. The workers dying in Amazon warehouses are meeting their shift metrics right up until they aren’t. And the quarterly numbers still go up somewhere, on some spreadsheet, for someone who doesn’t work in the warehouse.

This is what happens when you measure the wrong thing.

Productivity, as an idea, assumes that more output per unit of time is better. This sounds reasonable until you ask what the output is and what time costs the people producing it. An archaeologist reads a site in layers, reading not just what’s present but what’s absent, what was discarded, what didn’t survive. If you only count the artifacts in one quadrant and declare it a complete picture, you haven’t done archaeology. You’ve done something that looks like archaeology but produces bad conclusions.

American companies have done something that looks like productivity measurement but produces bad conclusions. The metric survived. The logic behind the metric didn’t.

What actually produces quality output, consistently, over time, is something closer to what my friend described over dinner. People who are good at their work and who stay. Who know each other well enough to be honest. Who have enough time away from work to return to it with energy rather than depletion. Who are treated as humans in a community rather than units in a throughput equation.

France is routinely mocked in American business culture for its labor protections, its required vacation time, its shorter work weeks. The framing is that these things cost productivity. That the French are charming but inefficient. That if you want results, you want American hours and American pressure and American systems.

And yet the food here is better. The buildings stand longer. The workers retire. The cave tour happened because someone in an HR department understood that people need to see each other as people, and €20 per person is a reasonable investment in making that happen.

The question worth asking isn’t how to squeeze more units of output per hour from the people you employ. The question is what you are actually trying to produce.

A metric that requires no interpretation is a metric that requires no thinking. That is not a coincidence. Lazy metrics survive because they are convenient, not because they are accurate, and there is a category of manager who prefers the convenience. It takes real effort to define what good output actually looks like, to build systems around it, to measure things that don’t fit in a spreadsheet column.

The French are not lazy. They are, in many cases, more rigorous about this than their critics. They decided that a worker who returns from vacation is more productive than a worker who doesn’t take one. That a colleague relationship sustained over fifteen years produces more than a quarterly incentive ever could.

My friend met her best friend at this job. She’s been there fifteen years and still enjoys going in.

That’s not a soft outcome. That’s what well-thought-out productivity looks like.

Last weekend I spent an afternoon at a kids activity center built into a forest outside Nice. Not built next to a forest. Into one. The rides appeared between the trees. A boat carried you up a small incline and dropped you into a lake. A giant seesaw ran entirely on the weight of whoever sat on it. Water guns shot across a shallow channel, and the water was filtered and recirculated so nothing was wasted. Lizards crossed the paths. Birds stayed in the canopy. The whole place ran quietly and well.

What I kept watching was the queue.

Nobody pushed. When it was your turn, the person behind you pushed the button to send you down the slide, and then you waited and did the same for the next person. Children who had never met were operating rides for strangers without being asked. No staff, no signs, no enforcement. Everyone simply understood what kind of place this was the moment they walked into the trees, and they behaved accordingly.

The forest did that. Not the rules. The environment itself told everyone what was expected before anyone arrived, and people rose to meet it naturally.

Disneyland cannot do this, and not because it lacks resources. It has more resources than almost any entertainment environment ever built. The problem is that it has no pre-existing frame to borrow from. The forest carries thousands of years of human understanding about shared space, natural systems, and how to move through an environment that belongs to everyone. Disneyland has to manufacture that understanding entirely from scratch, which is why it needs armies of staff, layers of signage, carefully engineered crowd flow, and a constant management infrastructure just to keep people oriented and moving. It works, but it is expensive and fragile, and the moment the infrastructure cracks, the experience goes with it. The forest just stands there and does the same work for free.

This same dynamic shows up in the ESL classroom, and most people teaching language never stop to notice it.

I teach storytelling to ESL business students, professionals who know their fields and have things worth saying. But the moment they feel the accent surface, or lose a word mid-sentence, the confidence goes and they stop. They simplify. They end up saying far less than they actually know.

The fix is not grammar, and here is why. When someone is speaking in a second language, word order shifts and sentences arrive in pieces the listener has to reconstruct in real time. A listener doing that work is not really listening so much as decoding, and by the time the speaker finishes, most of the room’s attention has gone to the structure of the sentence rather than what it actually contained.

Storytelling changes this before the first word even lands. When you open with a frame, something like here is the situation, here is the problem, here is what I need from you, the listener already knows what they are listening for. The decoding work drops immediately because context already exists. They are following a thread rather than building one from scratch, and the accent becomes secondary because the destination is already understood. The forest did this for a group of children who had never met. The students need to do the same thing, and the mechanism is identical. When the frame is already there, the content travels further with less effort.

Maps work the same way, and this is where the argument becomes useful well beyond classrooms and forest rides.

A map requires almost no introduction. You can hand someone a map in any language and they understand immediately what they are holding and what it is for. The spatial logic is already installed. North, south, distance, boundary, path — these are concepts humans carry before anyone teaches them formally, and a map of a city they have never visited still makes immediate sense because the framework is already familiar. The map speaks before the data does.

This is why maps work so well as storytelling tools for complex information. When I present spatial data through a map rather than a table or a chart, the audience does not need to learn a new visual language first because the frame already exists in them. The map borrows that pre-existing understanding and uses it to carry information that would otherwise require a lot of explanation. Most of the interpretive work is already done before anyone says a word.

The forest, the classroom, the map. Three different environments, three different problems, and one underlying structure running through all of them. When a frame already exists in the audience, built from shared physical experience, cultural memory, or spatial intuition, communication requires less force and the meaning lands further.

We spend so much energy building artificial frames when natural ones are already available. The forest did not need a staff. The map does not need its legend explained. The story does not need a grammar lesson before it can begin. The infrastructure is already there. The only question is whether we are willing to start from it rather than building everything from scratch.

My daughter is seven. Her teacher in Nice handles multiple grades in one classroom. Younger kids and older kids in the same room, every day. My daughter helps the younger ones and the older ones help her. They figure out how to play together, work together, and sometimes get on each other’s nerves. There are girl-game politics starting to creep in with the older ones and she is exposed to all of it.

That is the education.

I keep thinking about what is happening in America right now, where the answer to every classroom problem seems to be: less teachers, more screens. More platforms, more apps, more AI tutors, more individualized learning paths that quietly mean each child sitting alone with a device. Meanwhile teachers are quitting in droves, burned out by impossible workloads and a public that has decided their work is not worth funding.

My mother was a teacher. My grandmother was a teacher. There are teachers all through my family. I grew up watching what motivates someone to stand in front of a room of other people’s children year after year, and it is not the paycheck. It never was. Teachers teach because they are addicted to that moment when a kid finally gets it. That is the reward. Not the money. The look on a child’s face when something clicks is what they show up for, year after year. People who do that work for a living are some of the least money-motivated people you will ever meet, which is exactly why a healthy society protects them. Civil servants, by definition, are the workers society should be most careful with. They are not in it for the promotions.

So when we cut their pay, gut their budgets, blame them for outcomes shaped by hunger and housing and stress, and then layer on so much administrative noise that the teaching itself disappears, we are not just losing teachers. We are losing the kind of person who would choose to do that work in the first place.

I keep hearing some version of this: I don’t have kids, my kids are grown, I’m in my forties and never having children, school funding is not my problem.

It is your problem.

The children being undereducated and under-connected right now are the same people who, in twenty or thirty years, will be staffing the place you go when you can no longer live alone. They will be the nurses, the home aides, the pharmacists, the people running the systems that hold up your old age. Even if you have money, money does not conjure competent caring adults out of nothing. Competent caring adults are grown. They are grown in classrooms, in playgrounds, in mixed-age rooms where they learn how to be patient with someone smaller than them. They are grown by teachers who had the bandwidth to actually see them.

There is a second piece to this that nobody quite says out loud. American culture has been quietly teaching children to dislike old people. The marketing, the entertainment, the algorithm-driven content streams aimed at kids and teenagers do not exactly cultivate reverence for elders. They cultivate impatience with anyone who is slow, anyone who does not understand the new platform, anyone who costs the system money without producing more of it. A generation raised to see their grandparents as a drag on the economy is a generation that will not fight very hard to keep Social Security intact.

Pit the young against the old, defund the institution that might have given them a shared language, and the result is predictable. Everyone loses, separately.

What I see in Nice is actually what I grew up with in Iowa. People helped each other. Families dragged their children everywhere. Going to a restaurant and having kids at the table next to you was completely normal. That is what was supposed to happen. Now those kids are a nuisance, and the children are the ones losing out on the experience of being in public, of learning how to be around adults who are not their parents.

When someone in the school community loses a parent or a spouse, people show up. Quietly. They do not post about it. There is no public processing of grief on Facebook with a hundred crying-face reactions. Families take time, friends bring food and some go on retreats together. The community absorbs the loss as a community, because there still is a community. The school is part of how that community gets formed in the first place. The children in my daughter’s classroom are not just learning math. They are learning how to be people who show up for each other, because they spend their days showing up for each other in the small things.

That is what gets lost when you replace a teacher with a tablet.

Education is not a service the state provides to individual families. It never was. It is how a society makes the next version of itself. The classroom is one of the last places in modern American life where strangers’ children are still asked to figure out how to be in a room together, with an adult who is paid to care whether they succeed. Take that away, hand it to a screen, and you do not get more efficient learning. You get isolated kids, exhausted parents, vanished teachers, and a generation arriving at adulthood without the social muscle to hold anything together.

The crisis is not that test scores are dropping. The crisis is that we are quietly dismantling the place where Americans used to learn how to be Americans together.

I have been frustrated with AI lately, and I want to be specific about why, because the generic version of this complaint is not what I mean.

Last week I wrote about Navajo weavers and how the past is the warp that holds every new thread in place. This week I ran into the clearest proof of that argument I have found yet, and it came from trying to get a chatbot to write something worth reading.

When I brought my own thinking to the prompt, when I put my actual words and my actual argument on the table, I got something useful back. When I asked the tool to generate the thinking for me, it collapsed. The output looked like writing, but there was nothing underneath it.

I tried asking a chatbot to write my prompt for me, then I used my own words instead. My version was closer to what I was actually trying to say by a margin that should not be possible if these tools are as capable as advertised. The more I paid attention, the more I realized this is not a bug in how I was using it. It is a description of what the tool actually is.

AI can only repeat what you bring to it. The model reflects the quality of your input back at you, amplified and smoothed out, but it cannot supply what you did not put in. When you provide the context and the argument, it is useful. When you hand it an empty room and ask it to furnish the room from scratch, you get a description of what furniture usually looks like in rooms like this. Statistically average. Recognizable. Hollow.

The linguistics piece of this is not subtle. Language is not just a sequence of words. It carries intent, context, and the specific person who made it. A sentence from a linguist studying pragmatics carries different weight than the same sentence from a copywriter. The words might look identical. The meaning is not. AI strips that layer out by design because it was trained on pattern, not on meaning. What comes back is the shape of a sentence, accurately formed and almost entirely disconnected from the thing you were actually trying to say.

This matters for a reason that goes beyond frustration. The conversation about AI replacing entry-level work assumes the tool is consistent enough to replace a function. It is not. The same input does not reliably produce the same quality of output. A tool you cannot predict is not a replacement. It is a gamble you take every time you open it.

Creative work makes this even more visible, which sounds backwards. People assume AI would be fine at creative output because variation is acceptable there. But creative work is not the absence of constraint. It is the presence of a specific point of view. One person making one particular choice from one particular place in the world. You cannot average your way to a point of view. The more creative the task, the more clearly you see that the tool has no anchor of its own. It borrows yours. When you stop providing one, the output drifts.

This is what I mean when I say AI is a mirror. It shows you back to yourself at the resolution you showed up with. Bring depth and you get something you can work with. Bring a vague request and you get a vague answer dressed up in confident syntax. The tool does not know the difference between the two. You do.

I am not the only one seeing this. The Strategic Linguist has been writing about the structural linguistic limitations of large language models, the distinction between distributional semantics (patterns of words) and communicative intent (what we actually mean). One is a map; the other is the territory. Nate’s Newsletter has been making the case that AI needs a manager to function, that the output requires constant human judgment to be usable at all. As a data analyst, I see this as a quality control crisis that if the same input produces inconsistent output, the "efficiency" gain is eaten by the "audit" cost. This is the reality of what the tool actually does, regardless of the hype, being sounded by the experts.

The sourcing problem runs deeper than most coverage admits. A piece by Karen Hao a More Perfect Union documents the workforce being used to train these models toward what companies are calling PhD-level expertise. The workers doing that training are often recent graduates assigned to evaluate calculus problems, medical questions, and creative writing they were never trained in. One worker described answering a question about whether someone should reconnect with an abusive parent. He had twenty minutes and no qualifications. The comment sections on this story are full of people pointing out the obvious irony, that these workers are training the model that is supposed to replace them. But the sharper irony is quieter. They are not training it on expertise. They are training it on confident guesses delivered under time pressure, and the model cannot tell the difference. The data going in is not specialist knowledge. It is the shape of specialist knowledge.

Even Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, admitted it: the PhD-level claims are “nonsense”.

This does not mean the technology cannot be used to harm people. A voice that mimics someone you love is genuinely frightening. But being tricked by something is not the same as being replaced by something sentient. A forged painting is not a painter. A recorded voice is not a person. The capability to deceive is not the same as the capability to think, and conflating the two is how the hype stays alive longer than the evidence supports.

At some point Silicon Valley runs out of runway on this version of the argument. The money is not infinite. The useful applications are real but narrower than the pitch decks suggest. When the cycle exhausts itself there will be an opening for people who have been thinking seriously about sustainable integration, not replacement mythology, but tools that extend what humans with real expertise can do. That conversation is worth having. It just requires waiting out the people who are currently too invested in the other one to listen.

Your thinking is still the load-bearing structure. Everything else attaches to that or it floats.

A wool tapestry hanging in a New York museum is, in one sense, a more sophisticated piece of system design than most of what is shipping out of AI labs in 2026. The wool is hand-spun. The loom is the same kind of upright loom Diné weavers have been using for generations. The piece is by Melissa Cody, a fourth-generation weaver born in No Water Mesa, Arizona, in 1983. Her major solo show at MoMA PS1 last year was full of work like it. Cody grew up with Pac-Man, Frogger, and Nintendo, and she has spoken openly about how that world of 1980s video-games shaped her eye. The patterns she weaves are not literal video games. They are the visual vocabulary of pixilation translated into Spider Woman crosses, Saltillo diamonds, and the bold geometric overlays of the Germantown Revival, on the same loom her grandmother taught her on.

Every major AI system shipped in the last three years has hit the same wall. The technical name for it is catastrophic forgetting. When you train a model on new information, the old information it depended on degrades or disappears. Continual learning research at every major lab is, at its core, a search for an architecture that can take in the new without losing the old. There is a community in the American Southwest that has been solving a version of that problem in a different medium for around two centuries. The medium is wool, and the people are Diné.

The weaving did not stop being Navajo when she let video game aesthetics shape what she made. The tradition is the loom, the hand-spun wool, the geometry of the eye-dazzler, the relationships between the weavers in her family, and the cosmology those patterns trace. What emerges from the loom is a logic only she could produce as ancestral geometry and digital grit meet to form a pattern that is uniquely, undeniably hers.

This is what most people miss when they talk about tradition. They treat it as a noun. Something fixed and finished, kept behind glass, protected from change. Cody, in an interview about her work, said that the things we now consider tradition were not considered tradition when they first came about. Being a traditional artist, she said, is an ever-evolving definition.

That is tradition as a verb. Something a culture does, not something a culture has.

The Germantown Revival style Cody’s work belongs to is itself proof. That style came out of the forced internment of the Diné at Bosque Redondo in the 1860s, where the United States government supplied weavers with rationed wool from a mill in Germantown, Pennsylvania. The weavers took apart the rationed blankets, repurposed the bright commercial yarn, and invented a whole new visual language out of it. The brilliance of Germantown weaving exists because Navajo weavers kept weaving under conditions designed to break them, and made the rationed wool theirs. The thing we now call traditional was, at the time, survival and reinvention happening on the same loom.

I think about this often when I watch modern business try to handle change. The usual playbook is to either freeze in place or burn it all down. Hold the old thing too tightly and it becomes brittle. Throw it out and you lose the part that knew how to weather the last three crises. Almost nobody in corporate life is good at the third option, the one indigenous weavers have been practicing for centuries. Carry the old thing forward by letting it absorb what is happening now.

This is also why I keep returning to the Code Talkers. Choctaw soldiers in 1918, sent to the Meuse-Argonne offensive in France, transmitted American military communications in a language the United States had spent a generation trying to beat out of their grandparents in boarding schools. A generation later, in the Pacific, around four hundred Navajo Marines did the same with their language, and the code they built was never broken. Both languages were treated as worthless inside the schools and as priceless inside the war. The country was repeatedly saved by the wisdom it had tried to erase. That keeps happening, and we keep being surprised.

There is something in the AI conversation right now with the same shape. Everyone is asking what makes humans irreplaceable. The answer is sitting in front of us. It is the people who already know how to hold something old and let it breathe at the same time. People who can take the visual language of contemporary life and weave it into a centuries-old loom without losing the loom. People whose oral traditions trained them to memorize five hundred coded words under enemy fire. The pattern is consistent. The skill we keep needing in the next crisis is the one we underestimated in the last one.

What this asks of the rest of us is not appropriation. It is not pulling Spider Woman crosses onto a corporate brand deck and calling it inspiration. It is not romanticizing indigenous wisdom in the abstract while ignoring the actual people doing the work. It is paying attention to who already knows how to do the thing modern business cannot do, which is keep something alive while letting it change.

The stakes are bigger than aesthetics. Food distribution in the United States has consolidated into a handful of corporations. Pharmaceutical distribution sits with three. The same pattern is showing up in land use, water rights, and agricultural seed stock. When systems consolidate to that degree, the wisdom that gets lost first is precisely the kind that indigenous communities have spent centuries preserving: how to grow food without exhausting soil, how to use medicinal plants whose pharmacology was understood long before the patent system, how to read a watershed instead of just metering it. We are going to need that knowledge to repair what consolidation is breaking, and the people who carry it are still here.

The practical thing to do is support these communities now, not after the rest of the system finishes hollowing itself out. Buy directly from indigenous artists.

• The Indian Arts and Crafts Board at the Department of the Interior maintains a federal directory you can filter by product and region at doi.gov/iacb/artisans.

• Beyond Buckskin runs a curated list of Native-owned businesses across art, fashion, food, and home goods.

• If you can travel to the Southwest, the annual Santa Fe Indian Market run by the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts is one of the largest gatherings of indigenous artists in the country, and the quality and prices at events like that are better than what you will find filtered through a gallery markup.

• For longer-term support, the First Nations Development Institute funds Native communities directly across food sovereignty, land stewardship, and economic development.

• Read what indigenous writers and weavers and scholars are saying about their own work, in their own words, instead of through a museum label someone else wrote.

The future will not be built by those who treat tradition as a museum piece, but by those who understand it as a living system that evolves without losing its core integrity. While modern industries chase “disruption” by discarding the past, Native American traditions have spent centuries perfecting a more sophisticated logic: the ability to integrate the new without destroying the foundation.

True innovation requires roots that grow as fast as their branches. Native American weavers and thinkers have practiced this “modernity” for generations, proving the past is not a weight to be dropped, but the very engine of the future. While we scramble to build artificial intelligence from scratch, Indigenous cultures continue to maintain an intelligence that has already survived everything designed to break it.

In this sense, the loom is more “modern” than any AI model. It represents a technology of survival, a way of coding reality that values continuity over consumption. This is the ultimate form of innovation: a growth that is additive rather than destructive.

I notice it in myself first. I use a chatbot to juggle a schedule that has gotten complicated. Substack posts, my daughter’s school calendar, French bureaucracy, my own French classes, the half-finished thoughts I keep collecting throughout the week. AI is genuinely useful for this kind of work. It is faster than me, more patient than me, fine with being asked the same thing three different ways.

But here is what I have noticed. AI is excellent at done. It can finish a list. It can sort a calendar. It can take a pile of disconnected thoughts and turn them into something that reads like organization. What it cannot do is the next part. It cannot tell me which idea is actually worth following. It cannot decide what matters. It cannot do the slow part that makes a thing good. The dump is faster. The finish is still mine.

That gap between done and good is where most of our work now lives. AI made completion almost free. You can finish a thing before you have figured out what you are trying to say. Our reward system gets hooked on output.

The same pattern shows up at the scale of whole companies, not just my own desk. There is a strange thing you notice when you look at who actually makes lasting work versus who just makes a lot of work. Per capita, entrepreneurs and small business owners outperform large companies by a wide margin, not in revenue but in quality, durability, and whether the thing they made is still around in five years. The independent baker, the small studio, the one-person consulting practice that has been running for fifteen years. Their work holds up. It survives.

Big companies did not start that way. They started with one or two people who had a careful idea and made it well, because they cared. Then came scale, layers, approvals, and the idea got diluted into something the company could ship at volume. What holds the company together at that point is branding and headcount, not the work itself. Once you are working inside that, the same pull lands on you. Your career path becomes whatever output the company now rewards, which is no longer what built it. It will not teach you to make something well. It will teach you to hit the metric and ship the playbook. That is not depth, that is chasing. The companies that say AI will replace you will still need people who are good at what they do, just not the ones who followed the path the company laid out, because that path is a factory they can control and being uniquely you is not.

Archaeology teaches you this in a way almost nothing else does. When you sift through what survived from a culture, you are looking at what was made well enough to last. Mass-produced Roman amphorae exist by the millions in the archaeological record, but most of them are broken shards. The amphorae that survived intact were the ones made by potters who took their time, controlled their fire, finished the seal properly. Same product, different relationship to the work. The shards went into the trash heap during their own century. The good ones are in the museum.

The same logic shows up in food. A French bakery makes just enough bread for the neighborhood, ferments it for twenty-four hours, and the loaves are gone by 2 p.m. An industrial bakery ferments dough for forty-five minutes, ships across a country, and throws out whatever it does not sell. Both produce bread. The industrial version is built around volume. The French baker is built around the bread itself.

Per capita, the small operation wins because the person making the thing actually owns it. Their name is on it. Their judgment shaped it. Nobody approved it for them. Nobody softened the edges. Nobody sat in a meeting and asked if it was on brand. They built the brand by doing the work well, repeatedly, for years. That is the part that does not scale, and it is also the part that compounds.

This is why I am suspicious of the version of productivity that AI is selling right now. Not because the tools are bad. They are extraordinary. But the way most people are using them treats output as the win. More words, more posts, more drafts, more ideas generated. None of that is the same as understanding what you are working on, having a real argument, or knowing why your thing exists. Done is cheap now, but good costs what it has always cost: time, attention, judgment, and the willingness to keep going when the easy version of the work is already finished.

The real choice ahead of most knowledge workers is not whether to use AI. Of course you will. It is whether to use it as a shortcut to done or as a way to spend more of your effort on what actually requires depth. The difference shows up in whether your work still belongs to you in five years.

This is part of why I am building a framework around investing in your own depth instead of inheriting the version of you the company hands you. The company can survive on done for a while. You cannot. Your career, your name, your judgment all live or die on whether what you make is good enough to outlast the moment it shipped. Done is cheap. Be addicted to good.

I was walking home from university when I passed a young man crouching down to hand a sandwich to an older woman sitting on the sidewalk in front of a tree. She was disheveled and dirty, and so was the little girl next to her, who I realized was her granddaughter. He reached into his bag again and handed the child an unopened can of lemonade. Then he straightened up and said “bonne journée,” the same greeting you give everyone here, the shopkeeper, the neighbor, the stranger in the elevator, and walked on.

It was an exchange I saw in passing, but the weight of it stayed with me.

I’ve seen this more than once since we moved to France, young men especially, well-dressed and unhurried, stopping to give food or time to people who have neither. I mention the dressing well part not as contradiction but as context, because the French relationship to clothes is instructive here. A French scarf is not, as Americans tend to assume, a decorative extravagance. It is a practical object. A single quality scarf lasts two decades. It replaces the need for ten mediocre ones, keeps you warm through seasons your coat can’t always manage, and overtime costs less than the pile of fast options it replaces. What looks like luxury is actually a different logic entirely, one built around what lasts rather than what’s cheapest right now.

That is frugality. Not deprivation. Not penny-pinching. A refusal to let the lowest immediate price determine the real cost.

The word comes from the Latin frugalis, which derives from frux, meaning fruit or yield. Productive, generative, a thing that produces something. Which means that frugality, in its original sense, is not about what you withhold but about what you cultivate to grow.

Sociobiology, the study of how behavior patterns emerge from biological and social pressures, tells us that what a community reinforces is what it actually values, regardless of what it says it values. You might have heard this framed as social capital, the idea that relationships and trust function like currency in a community. In anthropology, the underlying behavior has a name: reciprocal altruism, the pattern where helping someone without an immediate return still benefits the group over time, and the group’s survival benefits you. It sounds transactional when you write it out like that, but in practice it looks like a young man handing a sandwich to a stranger and saying bonne journée, because that’s just what you do.

A society that consistently rewards the cheapest option has made a quiet declaration that people are expensive problems to be optimized around. A society where that reflex exists has made a different one, not in any policy document, but in daily behavior, which is where cultural values actually live.

Archaeologists read this in the physical objects a society leaves behind, because those objects reveal what people actually valued. Cheap things, disposable things, things built without care don’t survive. And here’s what I notice: in an excavation, a repaired object is often more significant than a pristine one, because repair requires a decision. Someone looked at a broken thing and chose to invest in it rather than discard it. A ceramic vessel mended with care, a leather sole resoled three times, these are evidence of intent, of a people who asked, before discarding something: is there more use here? Is there more life?

We have mostly stopped asking that question about people.

The corporate argument for automation is always framed as efficiency, and I understand the logic from inside it, having spent twenty years in data systems where every process improvement was justified by cost reduction. But the Waymo example is worth sitting with directly. A driverless ride costs less per trip. That is true. Economists have a term for what gets left out of that calculation: externalities, the costs that fall on someone other than the parties in the transaction. What I’d call the fallacy of the isolated transaction. The price of the ride looks lower only if you agree not to count the driver’s rent, their participation in the local economy, their children’s school supplies, the small businesses they patronize. None of that appears on the spreadsheet that approved the technology, because the spreadsheet was only asked to price the trip.

This is not frugality. It is the opposite of frugality, because it treats the cheapest immediate option as though it has no yield, no downstream generativity, no cost that compounds. It is exactly what a scarf purchased cheaply and discarded in a season is: not savings, but a decision to stop asking what lasts.

The deepest version of this is what I saw in that young man on the sidewalk. Compassion, real compassion as a cultural habit rather than a performance, operates on frugal logic. It asks what a human being is actually worth, not just in this transaction, not just this quarter, but over time. It recognizes that a person who has been seen and fed and treated as worth stopping for is a different kind of participant in a community than one who has been walked past long enough to understand their worth to that community.

Frugality and compassion share the same question: by choosing the cheapest option, what are we actually building here, and will it last?

There is a video circulating right now where a group of millionaires are asked what drives them. The answer is almost always the same thing: the number. Not what the number does. Not what it builds. Just the number going up.

When I watched, I kept thinking about the guys lined up outside Target at 6 a.m. waiting for Pokémon cards.

If you haven’t been following this particular fanaticism, here is what’s happening. A subset of adult collectors, mostly men in their twenties and thirties, have been buying Pokémon cards in bulk. Not to play the game and not because they love the franchise the way an eight-year-old loves the franchise. But because the cards became a speculative commodity, and they want to be the ones selling it back to you at a markup, as if they made the cards themselves.

Sam Altman does this. Mark Zuckerberg does it. The millionaires in that video do it. The Pokémon card guys are just doing it at a smaller scale, with holographic Charizards.

Gatekeeping has been around a long time. In cultural anthropology, the term refers to the people who control access, who gets to enter a community, who gets to share knowledge, who earns entry into a world. Good gatekeepers protect the people and practices they are guarding. They know the difference between someone who belongs and someone who is just passing through.

The scalpers outside Target are not those gatekeepers. They don’t know the game. They don’t know the community. They have no idea that for a kid, these cards are a whole world: strategy, collecting, trading with friends, the specific joy of pulling something rare. None of that exists to them; just the price it will fetch. They put themselves between the thing and the people who actually want it, not to protect anything, but to take from it. That is what makes them bad actors. Not the gatekeeping itself, it is the fact that they have no relationship to what they are guarding.

Archaeology has records of middlemen going back thousands of years, and those people served a real function. They moved goods and ideas between communities that would never have met otherwise. New materials, new techniques, new ways of thinking spread because someone was willing to carry them. It worked because those people were genuinely connecting makers to the people who needed what the makers had.

Modern gatekeepers aren’t doing that. They’re not connecting creators to anyone. They’re not moving ideas and they are not community builders. They are just standing in the road, charging you to pass.

And here is the irony that I can’t stop thinking about. Mark Zuckerberg built a platform whose entire premise is human connection, and he is currently spending an estimated $270 million building a private compound in Hawaii with a underground bunker, blast-resistant doors, and enough food and power to outlast whatever he thinks is coming. Eleven interconnected treehouses. A 16-car garage. The most elaborately isolated man on earth. He spent decades selling your attention to other people and used the money to make sure no one can get to him. That is not a community builder. That is someone who understood the value of connection well enough to monetize it.

And the language we use lets them get away with it. In American English we call it entrepreneurship. We call it hustle. We say someone has a good eye for opportunity, as if positioning yourself to extract from something other people built is the same as building something yourself.

In French there is a concept called Système D. The D stands for débrouille, which comes from the verb se débrouiller. It means resourcefulness, creative improvisation, the ability to make it work when the path isn’t clear. It is not about speed or volume. It is about savvy. It is about actually knowing what you are doing well enough to find a way through when no one hands you the answer.

That is entrepreneurship. That is worth being called hustle.

The scalpers outside Target have none of it. They are not improvising. They are not solving anything. They are putting up gates in front of things other people built and charging you to pass. Système D requires you to actually understand the system. These guys just found the door.

Sam Altman is more subtle about it. He will tell you that the people who know his software will be the ones with jobs in five years. Maybe. Or maybe he just needs you to believe that so you keep paying for access to a gate he built in front of something that he never understood to begin with.

I have felt this pull myself. Over the years I have chased certificates the way those guys chase cards. A Databricks data analyst certification. A load analysis certification. Microsoft Office certifications. And when I look at them honestly, they fall into the same categories as everything else in this essay. The load analysis certification was worth every hour because it taught me methodology, a way of thinking about problems that doesn’t expire when the software does. The Word and Excel certifications are fine because those tools are not going anywhere. But the Databricks certification? That clock is already running. The moment something replaces Databricks, and something will, that certificate is just a number that stopped going up. I wasn’t building anything. I was just standing in line outside Target.

And here’s what I notice: the people who chase the number eventually become completely dependent on the thing they’re chasing. If the cards lose cultural value tomorrow, there is nothing underneath the position. No skill. No creation. Just a number that stopped going up.

Depth is not the opposite of ambition. It’s what you have left when the thing you were chasing shifts, and it always shifts. The people who weather that are the ones who built something that compounds instead of deflates, and that usually means following curiosity past the point where it was obviously profitable.

The guys outside Target at 6 a.m. are not your competition. They never were. The question is whether you’re building something they can’t sell back to you later.

I am finishing my first semester of French learning at a university in France. Not a language app, not a YouTube series, an actual French university, taught by people who have spent their careers inside the language. The difference between that and Duolingo is the difference between learning to order a baguette and understanding why French people think the way they do. The grammar is where that lives, and the grammar is what nobody bothers to teach you when the goal is just to get through a transaction.

I went in thinking I was learning a language. But fifteen years of business English in corporate America turns out to be its own kind of training, because the contrast became impossible to ignore almost immediately. What I am learning is that French is a completely different system for organizing reality, and time is where that shows up significantly.

In English, we have present tense and present progressive. I study. I am studying. The difference is roughly whether something is habitual or currently happening, and most of the time we use them interchangeably without giving it much thought. That flexibility is actually interesting when you look at where it comes from, because English has always been a language of negotiation, absorbing vocabulary and structure from everywhere it landed. The ambiguity is almost a feature.

French does not work that way.

J’étudie means I study or I have been studying. Same word, no distinction. Which sounds imprecise until you see what French does instead: it carves time into specific, close-range zones that English leaves unnamed.

Je viens d’étudier. I just studied, meaning within the last fifteen minutes. That is the boundary the language sets. After fifteen minutes, that construction stops working. The language itself treats “just” as something with an expiration date.

Je suis en train d’étudier. I am in the process of studying right now, at this exact moment, not earlier today and not in any general ongoing sense. This instant only.

And then le futur proche. Je vais étudier. I am going to study, but only in the near sense, tomorrow or maybe next week. Stretch it further and a French speaker will reach for a different construction entirely, because that one belongs to the near horizon, to things that feel real and imminent rather than eventual.

English says “going to” and means anything from five minutes to five years from now.

This is actually where my Iowa upbringing keeps surfacing. Farmer time is not imprecise, it is relational. You show up when the work needs doing. You say you will come by later and everyone understands roughly what that means because the relationship carries the context. There is a trust built into that vagueness, a shared understanding that the commitment is real even if the clock is not involved. In a lot of ways farmer time is more connected to people than to schedules, and there is something worth paying attention to in that.

Business English moved away from that entirely, and not by accident. Corporate language learned to promise without committing, to gesture toward timelines without attaching to them. “We will circle back on that soon.” “Let’s plan to reconnect in the near term.” The ambiguity is load-bearing, because precision has consequences. In a contract, in a meeting, in an email chain, vagueness is protection. And after enough years inside that system you stop noticing that you have lost the thread between your words and what you actually mean.

That is part of what makes French grammar so disorienting at first. The language keeps asking you to be specific about when. And if you have spent fifteen years in an environment that rewarded strategic imprecision, being asked to locate yourself in time with that kind of accuracy feels like being caught without a prepared answer.

This connects directly to something I kept bumping into about politeness, because the French have a reputation in America for being rude and I think that reputation tells us more about American English than it does about France.

In the Midwest where I grew up, politeness is largely about not hurting someone’s feelings, or more accurately, about performing the appearance of not hurting them. You smile while you say it. You soften the edge. “Oh, you poor thing” delivered with genuine warmth while meaning something considerably less warm. Midwestern nice is a real phenomenon and it runs deep, the idea that kindness lives in the cushioning, in the careful management of how a hard thing lands.

But there is another current in Iowa that sits right alongside that, and it comes from the farming culture. Traditional farm communities do not talk much. They just show up. Your neighbor’s barn burns down and by morning there are twelve people in the yard with lumber. Nobody made a speech about it. The action was the communication and the action was enough. That version of Midwestern culture is actually much closer to how the French operate than most Americans would expect.

In France, directness is not the opposite of kindness. It is the form kindness takes. You say what you mean because respecting someone means not making them guess. You give a direct answer because a vague one wastes everyone’s time and the French, as we have already established, have very specific feelings about time.

What reads as rude to an American trained in the softening and the cushioning is often just a French person treating you as someone capable of handling a straight answer. The grammar reflects this too. When the language already requires you to specify exactly when something happened, you develop a different relationship to precision. Vagueness is not polite.

Business English taught a lot of us to mistake managing feelings for respecting people. French is a useful correction to that, because the directness is actually a form of respect. Telling you the truth, being straight with you, not dressing something up to make it easier to sell. Kindness in that framework means telling you what you actually need to hear rather than what keeps the relationship comfortable. And there is a stability in that, because when someone is direct with you, you have real information to work with. Managing your feelings to lead you down a road that was never going to serve you is not kindness, it is a waste of your time, and the French would call it exactly what it is. You can decide whether something is still serving you only when someone has respected you enough to be honest about what it actually is. That is harder to do when the language around you has been carefully designed to keep you from asking the question in the first place.

There is one more thing French keeps doing that I am still getting used to. When you meet someone here, the conversation does not immediately turn to what you do for work. In America, that is often the first question, and it is not really a question about you, it is a question about where to place you. In France the question is more likely to be about what you enjoy, what you are interested in, what you do with your time. It is a small thing and also not a small thing at all, and it connects directly to everything I have been describing about how language shapes what a culture actually values. I will be going into this much more deeply in a workbook, because it turns out that the question of what do you do versus what you love, is doing an enormous amount of work in how we understand our own value and how we present ourselves professionally.

Which brings me to what I want to leave you with, and what I am building into a workbook: the language you speak is not just how you communicate, it is how you perceive.

If your language has three distinct verb constructions for “just happened,” “happening now,” and “about to happen,” you live inside time differently than someone whose language treats all three as roughly the same moment. That is not just a linguistics observation. It shows up in how you work, how you lead, and how you read the people around you. I am building something around exactly that, and this essay is the beginning of it.

For now: je viens d’apprendre quelque chose meaning I just learned something. In fifteen minutes, the language itself will ask me what I am going to do about it.
