Sometimes culture begins with something so small that no one realizes it is happening…

A gesture, phrase, song, or a moment between two people that feels ordinary at the time, only to become something millions of people repeat years later. In 1977, two Los Angeles Dodgers teammates created one of those moments. But the story of the high five is not really about a hand raised in celebration, but more so about friendship, identity, discrimination, and the complicated question of who gets remembered when something becomes part of culture.

The Core Experience

On October 2, 1977, Dodgers outfielder Dusty Baker stepped to the plate needing one more home run to reach 30 for the season. When he hit it, he became part of a historic Dodgers lineup that included four players with at least 30 home runs,a first in Major League Baseball. Waiting on deck was rookie Glenn Burke.

As Baker rounded the bases, Burke ran toward home plate with his hand raised. Baker reached up and slapped it. The gesture was spontaneous, as neither player was trying to invent anything. But that moment became what is widely recognized as the first documented high five in sports.

The story could end there as a fun piece of sports history, but it doesn’t.

Burke was talented, charismatic, and deeply connected to his teammates. He was also a gay man playing professional baseball at a time when openly LGBTQ+ athletes faced enormous pressure and hostility. Within a year, his relationship with professional baseball had changed dramatically. He was traded to Oakland, and his career soon came to an end. The same person who helped create one of the most recognizable gestures in sports history was pushed away from the game he loved.

Why This Matters Right Now

We often think of culture as something created by famous people, major events, or deliberate movements. But culture also grows from ordinary human interactions.

The high five was not designed in a boardroom. It wasn’t marketed with a campaign behind it. Two teammates were celebrating, and a new form of communication emerged almost by accident. That raises a bigger question of who gets to shape culture?

Students live inside cultural moments every day. They use expressions they did not invent, repeat trends they did not start, listen to music shaped by generations before them, and participate in traditions whose origins may have been forgotten. A drone can look simple from the outside with a few arms, propellers, cameras, and a battery. Inside, however, is a much more complicated story involving software, engineering, electronics, manufacturing, testing, and hundreds of decisions made by people with different areas of expertise.

This inside look follows the production of the Skydio X10 from individual components to a finished autonomous drone. Students see processes that are usually hidden behind the final product, including waterproofing electronics, joining components, soldering wires, installing processors and cameras, calibrating equipment, and putting completed drones through demanding tests.

What looks like one machine is actually a collection of interconnected systems. The drone needs hardware that can withstand the elements, cameras need to capture information accurately, processors need to interpret that information, mechanical components need to move precisely, and software needs to coordinate the system. And before the drone can leave the factory, it has to prove that all of those pieces work together.

That makes the factory floor a useful place to think about careers. A product can require mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, software developers, robotics specialists, manufacturing technicians, designers, quality-control teams, researchers, and many others working toward the same outcome.

We talk about what gets thrown away, how much is wasted, and what could be done differently. But what happens when someone decides not just to reduce waste, but to rethink the entire system that creates it?

This Belouga experience follows chef and entrepreneur Douglas McMaster and his journey building Silo, a restaurant designed around a radical idea of what if a kitchen could operate without creating waste. At the center of the lesson is a chef attempting something that had never been done quite the way he imagined it. McMaster sets out to create an award-winning restaurant around a zero-waste food system, challenging assumptions about how ingredients are sourced, prepared, served, and discarded.

Rather than presenting innovation as a straight line from idea to success, the film shows the messy reality of trying to build something new, such as ideas that need to be tested, systems that have to be redesigned, and decisions that have consequences. No Limits follows two disabled athletes, one from the United States and one from South Sudan, who form an unlikely friendship and eventually travel from Washington, D.C. to Juba with a shared purpose of bringing wheelchair basketball to people who have survived war.

This When I Grow Up experience goes to Long Island, New York, where a day of whale watching becomes something much more than a search for whales. Alongside a marine biologist, we get a closer look at how scientists observe animals in the wild, understand marine ecosystems, and turn curiosity into meaningful work.

Out on the water, there is no guarantee of what will appear. A whale might surface nearby, or a bird might pass overhead. The water may look completely ordinary until something changes in an instant. That uncertainty is part of the science.

In this lesson, Michael Schwartz joins a marine biologist on the water and begins to see whale watching differently. Instead of simply looking for an incredible animal, he is learning how observation becomes a tool for understanding the ocean. Cities are often designed to keep nature out…

Concrete replaces soil, roads redirect water, buildings occupy habitats, trees become landscaping rather than infrastructure, and when heavy rain arrives, the water has nowhere to go. But what if we stopped asking cities to control nature and started designing them to work alongside it?

Across the world, architects, planners, and communities are experimenting with a different approach: cities that can absorb rain, support biodiversity, reduce heat, and create space for plants and animals alongside people. These are sometimes called sponge cities. The idea sounds simple, but the implications are much bigger.

This is where the learning begins.

The Core Experience

A city can look almost entirely human-made from the outside: streets, sidewalks, buildings, parking lots, pipes, and concrete. But underneath that surface is a living system. Water is moving, soil is absorbing, tees are growing, birds and insects are adapting, and every decision about where we build, pave, plant, or remove something changes how that system functions.

The experience begins in Nanchang, China, where an urban park has been designed to do more than provide green space. Its vegetation, landscape, and natural materials help capture water while creating habitat for other species. From there, the story expands. Cities around the world are confronting heavier rainfall, rising temperatures, flooding, habitat loss, and declining biodiversity. Much of the infrastructure built to manage these challenges has traditionally relied on concrete, pipes, dams, and drainage systems.

Sponge city thinking focuses on the concept of our infrastructure being alive. The result is a city that combines human engineering with the systems nature already provides.

Why This Matters Right Now

More than half of the world’s population lives in urban areas, making cities one of the most important places to think about climate adaptation. The challenge is that cities are not separate from the natural world, they are part of it.

When vegetation is removed, habitats disappear. When soil is covered with pavement, rainfall behaves differently. When waterways are redirected, flooding patterns can change. When native plants disappear, the animals and insects that depend on them can disappear as well. This means city planning is also environmental planning.

The choices made around a school, neighborhood, park, road, or building can influence much more than how a place looks. They can affect water, temperature, wildlife, air quality, and the ability of a community to respond to extreme weather. The key lesson here is not that one design can solve climate change, but rather how the places we build become part of the climate conversation.

Designing With Nature

Traditional infrastructure often tries to move water away as quickly as possible. Sponge city design slows it down, captures it, absorbs it, and lets natural systems help. This can happen through relatively simple interventions:

• Vegetated areas that collect rainfall

• Permeable pavement that allows water to enter the soil

• Trees and native plants that provide habitat

They are about understanding a place, identifying its vulnerabilities, learning from evidence, and designing systems that are more resilient than what came before.

We tend to think of math as something that lives on a page, such as numbers, equations, shapes, and formulas. But mathematics is also the study of patterns, and patterns are constantly unfolding around us. They appear in music, nature, architecture, weather, language, and even in the way a four-legged animal moves across the ground.

This experience takes something remarkably ordinary, an animal walking, and asks students to look at it differently. By slowing movement down and breaking it into a sequence, a simple walk becomes a mathematical pattern that can be observed, named, compared, and explained.

This is where the learning begins.

The Core Experience

The lesson begins with a deceptively simple question, “Do all four-legged animals walk in the same way?”

Students are introduced to the idea of a quadruped and then asked to look more carefully at the order in which its legs move. Once each leg is assigned a number, movement becomes something that can be represented as a sequence. A walk that might be difficult to describe visually suddenly becomes something students can read as a repeating pattern. The sequence becomes 3–1–4–2.

This Belouga experience takes students to a small permaculture farm outside Berlin, where Falk Gärtner has transformed a dry, sandy piece of land into a productive and diverse growing system. There are no massive machines moving across the property. Instead, there are swales that capture water, logs that help hold moisture, compost that returns nutrients to the soil, different crops growing alongside one another, and spaces intentionally left wild for insects, birds, and other animals.

Nothing is treated as completely separate. Waste can become fertilizer, plants can support other plants, animals can help control pests, water can be captured and reused, and a failed crop does not necessarily mean a failed farm. What looks simple on the surface is actually a complex system designed around relationships.

What can a single tooth tell us about an animal that disappeared millions of years ago…

Fossils are more than remnants of the past. They are evidence that give scientists clues about what lived, what disappeared, what environments once looked like, and how life changed over enormous stretches of time. Sometimes those clues come from places we might never expect to find them.

The Core Experience

The experience begins in an unlikely setting of a quiet suburban area in Bayside, Australia. Beneath the familiar landscape are remnants of an ancient ecosystem that once looked dramatically different. Millions of years ago, the coastline, sea levels, climate, and marine life were all changed. The waters were home to enormous predators, whales, turtles, fish, and other species that have long since disappeared. Among them was the Megalodon.

By studying its teeth and other fossil evidence, paleontologists can begin to reconstruct how this enormous shark may have lived. Its teeth reveal clues about what it ate and how it fed. Bite marks preserved on the bones of ancient whales provide another piece of evidence. The size of the animal gives scientists additional questions to investigate such as how did it hunt, why did it become so large, what role did competition play, and what eventually caused it to disappear.

The remarkable part is that scientists cannot simply observe the Megalodon directly, they have to work backward. A tooth, a jaw fragment, a bite mark, or a fossilized bone all becomes another piece of evidence in a much larger puzzle…and that puzzle is still incomplete.

Why This Matters Right Now

It is easy to think of science as a collection of answers. This lesson offers students a different picture.

Science is often the process of asking better questions when the evidence is incomplete. Paleontologists cannot watch a Megalodon hunt. They cannot measure one in the ocean or observe its behavior. Instead, they examine what has survived and use that evidence to develop and test explanations about what may have happened millions of years ago.

That distinction matters far beyond paleontology with students encountering incomplete information constantly. Some buildings are more than places…

They become gathering spaces. They carry memories, traditions, art, and the voices of the people who shaped them. Over time, a building can become part of how a community understands its history, and part of how that history is passed forward. But what happens when that place closes? When its doors remain locked, its purpose is forgotten, or the stories connected to it begin to fade?

This Belouga experience introduces students to the Niagara Turtle, a one-of-a-kind cultural landmark in Niagara Falls, New York. Inspired by the Haudenosaunee creation story of the Earth forming on the back of a giant turtle, the building was created as a place where Indigenous art, performance, history, and community could be celebrated and shared. Today, Friends of the Niagara Turtle is working to “Reawaken the Turtle,” protecting the building and helping preserve the cultural vision it was created to carry.

This is where the learning begins.

The Core Experience

The Niagara Turtle first opened in 1981 as the home of the Native American Center for the Living Arts. Its design was unlike anything around it. Shaped to reflect the Turtle Island creation story, the building itself communicated meaning before anyone stepped through its doors.

Inside, the space became a home for Indigenous visual and performing arts, cultural expression, education, and community gathering. It offered visitors opportunities to encounter living traditions and engage with Indigenous histories through the voices, creativity, and experiences of Indigenous people.

Then, in 1995, the center closed. The building was left vacant, and the future of the Niagara Turtle became uncertain. Yet the story did not end there. Community members, advocates, artists, and preservation supporters began working to protect the landmark and renew its purpose. Through their efforts, students encounter preservation as something active. It is about asking what a place represents, whose stories it carries, and how communities can ensure those stories remain visible for future generations. The Niagara Turtle becomes more than a building, it becomes a meeting point between history and possibility.

Lottie Gil has loved lacrosse since she was young. She grew up watching her mother play for the Iroquois Nationals long before she understood how significant that achievement truly was.
