nothing, right? a scent name. maybe a little poem about provence. but no list — and not because you lost it. because no one ever wrote one anywhere you were allowed to look.

that blank space is the reason i'm on a mission.

and i should tell you where the mission really started, because it wasn't a strategy meeting — it started decades before ben's garden existed. i grew up with a younger brother who had severe asthma. i watched, more than once, what happens to a person when the air turns against them. you don't forget it. air has never been abstract to me since — it's the first thing i notice in any room, and even now, in new york city, my home runs on air purifiers. some people inherit heirlooms. i inherited the question: *what's in the air?*

so understand who's writing this. i'm the customer in this story. i love beautiful things — i've spent my life making them — and i read labels the way some people read wine lists: not out of suspicion, but out of appreciation for anything made well and described honestly. i was happy to pay more, a lot more, for a candle that would simply tell me what it was. this is the air my family breathes. my pets breathe it too, and nobody asked them.

so i went shopping with money in my hand, and i made a discovery: the candle i wanted to buy does not exist. not at any price. i wanted my extra dollars to buy information.

this industry only sells adjectives.

and here's what makes that so strange. real luxury shows its work. a great wine tells you the vineyard and the year. a fine watch opens its back and lets you look inside. a good suit tells you the mill that wove the cloth. martha stewart once built an entire paint palette from the araucana eggs her own hens laid at the farm — those impossible blue-green shells became a color chart with an address. that is what taste actually is: beauty you can trace to its source. the candle is the only beautiful thing in your house that treats its own story like a liability. secrecy isn't luxury. secrecy is what luxury does when it's lying.

i've spent 34 years making things people bring into their homes, which means i've spent 34 years reading labels — mine and everyone else's. so i went down this rabbit hole properly. the documented one. here's the ladder, bottom to top.

**the $5 candle.** glade will actually show you a list — about 35 fragrance chemicals in a single candle, several flagged on their own allergen index. why so honest? California made them. the most honest candle in america is the one at the drugstore, and it's honest at gunpoint.

**the $28 candle.** "soy blend," says the label at the mall. a blend of soy and *what*? ten percent soy or ninety? they don't say. the word soy is doing the work. the word blend is doing the hiding. it's a duet — performed to convince you it's exactly what you wanted.

**the $90 candle.** surely at ninety dollars you've bought honesty. you haven't. you've bought better sentences about the secrecy. "a unique blend of high-quality waxes." "master waxers." "razor-sharp alchemy." i'm not making that last one up — i wish i were. and let me say this plainly: i admire these houses. the vessels are beautiful. the boxes are little works of art (maybe), and i've spent my life on the craft of packaging. but i checked the french ones, the london ones, the spanish ones, and the pattern held every time: at ninety dollars and up, the candle doesn't come with ingredients. it comes with a vocabulary. and the vocabulary exists by design — candle fragrance has no regulatory agency checking that what we're breathing is healthy, consistent, or even disclosed.

**and then the brands i actually respect** — the part of the climb that hurt.

one of the most tasteful brands in america lists its wax completely. palm oil, soybean oil, coconut oil — real names, and real credit for that. then the last word on the ingredient line: "fragrance." the marketing says essential oils. the label says fragrance. when the beautiful sentence and the boring sentence disagree, believe the boring one. it's "natural flavors" for your living room — a lovely word for chemicals.

another beloved brand proudly lists everything that's *not* in the candle — no phthalates, no parabens, no sulfates. lovely. now ask what *is* in it, and the answer is "proprietary." a third-party analysis of one of their candles found an ingredient the eu banned from cosmetics in 2022 over fertility concerns. perfectly legal here. why? because in america a candle isn't a cosmetic. it's a home good — regulated for fire, not for what happens when you breathe it.

sit with that. your face cream has to confess everything it might do to your skin. the thing you *set on fire and inhale for four hours* is the only product in your house allowed to keep its ingredients silent, secret, or — at best — romanticized.

and one more — a lovely company whose blog warns readers about the dangers of paraffin, while its own faq admits their candles contain paraffin. i don't think that's villainy. i think it's either a left hand that doesn't know what the right hand pours, or a brand halfway through changing and hoping nobody checks the seams. either way, the lesson is the same: if the company can't keep its own story straight, what chance did you have?

here's the part i couldn't get past. on the only question that matters — *what am i breathing?* — the five-dollar candle answers better than the ninety-dollar one. read that again. the ugly candle confesses. the beautiful one recites poetry. every dollar in between bought marketing, not information. which means the customer trying hardest — the one who upgraded *because* she reads labels — is the one being told the least. the industry found its most thoughtful buyer and decided she was the easiest to flatter.

i know that customer well. i'm him.

now notice the strangest fact in this whole story: nobody broke a law.

not one brand. there's no law to break. the eu banned an ingredient; we didn't. california forced disclosure onto cleaning products; candles slipped between the chairs. every brand on the ladder is fully legal, and every brand on the ladder chose not to tell you what you're breathing — not because a chemist said the ingredients were dangerous, but because a marketer said they were unsellable. "paraffin" doesn't survive contact with a ninety-dollar price tag. "fragrance" does. the blank space on the label isn't an oversight. it's load-bearing. it holds up the price you pay. and none of it is accidental — somewhere, six focus groups determined exactly which detail you'd care about least, and that's the one they disclose.

and let me be precise, because "the system" is where responsibility goes to hide. the disclosure rules america does have were written fifty years ago — the same era that gave us bed bath & beyond — and candles were left out of every one of them. bed bath & beyond is gone. the gap is still here. because here's the thing: there is no law about what a candle must tell you. none. the silence isn't legislated. it's just undisturbed. but there is honesty. there is morality. there is decency. none of those require a statute — and every blank label fails all three. laws don't keep secrets. corporations do — and corporations are just people with better letterhead. every blank label was approved by a person who saw the full ingredient list; they had to see it, in order to leave it off. the system didn't decide you couldn't know. someone did. someone always does.

there's a name for telling only the parts that flatter you. we teach children it's still lying. the industry's defense is that it never spoke — but look at the box. it never stopped speaking. it just never said anything.

and before anyone reaches for the size excuse — *the big companies disclose because california made them; the small beautiful brands can't, because their suppliers won't tell them* — let me close that door personally, because i'm standing inside it. those brands buy fragrance from the same houses i do. i know those rooms. the full ingredient list is on the menu. so is purity — the fragrance houses sell cleaner formulas in tiers, and cleaner costs more. i asked for everything, and i got everything. so the blank label isn't protecting a recipe. it's protecting a receipt. a brand that discloses can't quietly buy the cheap tier. a brand that doesn't, can — and no one can ever check. the silence protects the margin from both ends: the price you paid, and the price they did. the difference between us was never what we were told. it's what we chose to repeat.

and the partial versions don't count. the wax but not the scent. what's absent but not what's present. the blog but not the faq. i keep landing on the same sentence:

so here's my confession, and my answer: ben's garden is building candles 2.0 right now. not a line extension — a refusal. i got tired of shopping for something that doesn't exist, and after 34 years of making things, i know exactly what you do when the thing you want isn't on the shelf. you make it. people sometimes ask what the benefit of being a founder is, after all this time. it isn't the parking spot. it's this: you get to decide what your company will never do, and nobody can overrule you.

even the label itself will be beautiful — that's a promise from the man whose walls are covered in old dutch shop labels and french apothecary sheets, from the era when the label was the proudest part of the package. when i was a kid, we made cyanotypes: lay a fern on paper, let the sun do the developing, and the leaf prints itself in deep prussian blue. sunlight, telling the truth about a leaf — and it's beautiful. that's the spirit of the label we're designing. the ingredient list isn't the fine print. it's the artwork. a great wine doesn't taste better because it names the vineyard. it names the vineyard because it can.

and to the industry i've spent my life inside — an industry i love, full of people who make beautiful things: this isn't an attack. it's an invitation. we make the objects people live with. we should be the easiest industry in america to trust. imagine a standard that means one simple thing — *everything in this jar is on this label.* whoever builds that owns the next twenty years of this business. i'd rather we build it together. but somebody has to go first. that's what a leader is for.

because if this whole story feels familiar, it should. wasn't transparency supposed to be the point of organic? we fought that fight already — marched it all the way into law, won the label. and the industry learned its lesson, just not the one we taught. it learned that the *words* sell. so it kept the vocabulary and dropped the substance: "natural," "clean," "pure" — every one of them legally meaningless on a candle. we crossed this bridge once before, and they moved the river.

When I was fourteen, someone handed me a check for thirty-seven thousand dollars. And instead of doing a single sensible thing with it, I bought stock in a company run by a man in a black turtleneck, because I had a feeling about him in my gut that I couldn’t have explained to you if my life depended on it.

Then I spent the next thirty years learning not to trust that feeling. This is the story of how I got it back.

Let me start with the check. The money came from my first real sale — glass and copper coaster sets, made by hand, sold in person to Anthropologie in Philadelphia. I was a kid with handmade goods and far more nerve than sense. I’d rounded up my friends and paid them in pizza to help me make the things. To a fourteen-year-old, thirty-seven thousand dollars wasn’t money so much as a rumor of money. What was I going to do with it — buy a car I couldn’t legally drive?

So I bet it on Steve Jobs. Understand me clearly: I wasn’t betting on a stock, and I certainly wasn’t predicting an iPhone. There was no iPhone. I couldn’t have told you what one was. What I saw was a man who’d had a vision, believed in it with every fiber of himself, built a company around it — and was then thrown out of the very thing he’d made. Who went off and started something small called Pixar. And who got begged back, years later, by the same board that had discarded him, because the company was going to die without him.

I was fourteen, and I felt every bit of that in my body. The belief. The humiliation of being cast out of your own creation. The long vindication of being asked to come home. For me, business has never been an abstraction over here while my feelings sit politely over there — the line between the two barely exists, and years later I’d learn there’s a reason for that. So when I looked at Jobs, I wasn’t forecasting anything. I was recognizing someone. I bet on him the way you root for the one person in a room whose ache you happen to share. Not on Apple. Not on the Macintosh. On him. It’s the favorite fruit for a reason.

So here’s the question that’s been sitting on my chest. If I was that kid — the one who could feel a stranger’s whole story in his own chest and trust it enough to bet everything he had — why did I spend the next thirty years refusing to take my own calls?

The answer isn’t a business answer. It’s a far more human one.

When You Start as a Kid, Everything Is Normal

When you build a business as a child, you have no baseline. Nothing to measure against. You can’t tell the difference between a fair deal and a fleecing, between a real rule and a grown man simply being cruel to a kid who doesn’t know better. So you take all of it as instruction. You assume the way you’re treated is the way it’s meant to be — a tuition you must have enrolled in somehow.

And for decades, that’s exactly what I did. When the industry treated me badly, I assumed I’d earned it. When I got shut out of rooms, I assumed I hadn’t yet paid for the ticket. My mistakes I filed as debts. My humiliations I filed as coursework. I genuinely believed that if I was being made to feel small, it was because I was small, and the people doing the shrinking were the adults who knew rules I hadn’t been issued.

I carried that quietly for about three-quarters of my life. The story I told myself was never “they were wrong.” It was always “I’m doing something wrong, and I simply haven’t found it yet.”

The Gift and the Wound Are the Same Wiring

Here’s the part I’ve never written down, and the part that I think explains everything.

When I bet on Steve Jobs, I could feel his conviction, his refusal to let go of a vision, the particular agony of being exiled from your own creation — and I could feel it because I was running the same hardware. For a mind like mine, business and feeling aren’t two departments. They’re the same nerve. The line most people keep between “this is just work” and “this is me” — for me that line is barely a pencil mark. So Jobs’s story didn’t read to me as a case study. It read as a feeling I already knew.

I’ve read patterns like that my whole life. It’s simply how I’m built. But I didn’t learn what it was called until I was thirty-four, in a very fancy hospital outside Boston, when someone finally handed the thing a label. The label was autism. High-functioning. A word, at thirty-four, for a way of seeing I’d been doing since before I could legally drive. My honest first reaction: well, isn’t that useful. You get the diagnosis of a headache, and the prescription is a Tylenol.

What I’ve come to understand since, slowly and at real cost, is that the creative mind and the autistic mind can be each other’s worst enemies. The very wiring that let me feel Jobs’s conviction in my gut is the wiring that let me take a closed door and read it as a verdict on my soul. The pattern recognition that found Apple at eight dollars is the same engine that took an industry’s coldness and assembled it, brick by brick, into a case against myself.

It isn’t two traits. It’s one trait, aimed in two directions. One moment it sees the system everyone else has missed. The next, it turns that same merciless clarity inward and builds an airtight argument for why you were never enough. The thing that lets you see is the thing that makes you bleed. For most of my life I believed I had a flaw to hide. What I actually had was a faculty I hadn’t learned to aim. That, and a complete inability to catch a ball.

And there was a name for the gift, long before the hospital offered theirs. For years, the thing that let me see what others couldn’t had already been named by what it produced. They called it instinct. They called it vision. Once or twice, when they were feeling generous, they called it genius. The clinical word didn’t replace those. It was supposed to explain them. Same wiring — the world had just been describing it by its output for two decades before anyone got around to describing it by its diagnosis.

And here’s the cruelest trick of the whole arrangement: a mind like mine collects humiliations as data. It doesn’t release them, because it doesn’t release anything. So I had built, over decades, a meticulous case that I wasn’t wanted, that I’d earned my exclusions, that the smallness was mine. A beautiful case. Flawless, even. And entirely wrong. It simply never occurred to me to audit it the way I’d audit anything else.

So I Finally Followed the Evidence

Here’s the thing about a gut like mine: it deserves to be checked against the record, and I’d never once done the check. So let me do it now, out loud.

I design and manufacture luxury home and gift here in New York City, and I sell it in my own stores and in stores around the world. I’ve exhibited at trade shows since I was sixteen — starting at the Atlanta market, the great hall of American wholesale, where men in beautiful suits and bow ties did business on handshakes that held for decades. That world ran on friction: you flew somewhere, you walked the aisles, you met the maker. The friction wasn’t a defect. It was the product — the trust, the relationships, the curation.

Then the pattern came for it, the way it comes for everything. The iPhone made talking convenient. Amazon made buying convenient. Faire made wholesale buying convenient — in the exact corner of the world I’d spent my life standing in. Those aren’t three events. They’re one event in three costumes. Convenience wins. It always wins, against every incumbent who mistakes his own friction for something sacred. The buyers who once filled those aisles were forty-five twenty years ago; they’re sixty-five now, and tired, and the generation behind them will never board a flight to a city they don’t care for to squint at things they don’t want, when the whole catalog fits in a hammock.

And here’s the evidence that actually got to me — the personal kind. The cool, curated show that wouldn’t have me owns nothing at all. It rents its rooms, and the “exclusive” roster it so carefully assembled was drawn, in the main, from a pool that had been sitting in the old legacy buildings the whole time. It was a filtered copy of a list, sold on the strength of two men’s taste in woven plastic placemats and brass keychains heavy enough to require a valet — a show now fading fast enough that it imports reality-television personalities to hawk candles, in the hope that proximity to fame reads as relevance.

So I ran the audit. And the verdict I’d carried for thirty years — you weren’t good enough to be let in — turned out to be false on the facts. I wasn’t not good enough. I was early. I was a kid who could feel where the whole thing was heading, locked out of rooms that were already dying, by people who couldn’t see the pattern I’d been reading since I was fourteen. The door was never a judgment of me. It was just a door, on a building quietly coming down.

The Part the Pattern Can’t Touch

I’m not telling you this to settle a score. I don’t find grievance-keeping productive — that, at least, is one way I’m wired that I’m glad of. I’m telling you because I suspect a lot of you are carrying the exact file I was. Some room that didn’t want you. Some early humiliation you’ve spent years treating as proof of your own smallness. And I want to tell you the thing I wish someone had told me at twenty: audit the evidence before you trust the verdict. You may have been early, not wrong.

Because there’s another half to all of this — the half no pattern and no technology will ever disrupt. Convenience wins the transaction. It has never once won the relationship.

Everything is changing now, faster than ever, with AI rewriting nearly every job description and a political climate that’s made the floor feel liquid under all of us. That unsteadiness is real, and I won’t pretend otherwise. But underneath it sits the one thing that hasn’t moved an inch since the bow-tie men shook hands in Atlanta: human nature. The instinct to trust whoever keeps his word. The long memory for who showed up and who didn’t. The permanent, unkillable preference we all have for doing business with people who behave well when no one is watching.

So keep your side of the street clean. Do the right thing on the days the wrong one would’ve worked just fine. Build relationships you mean to keep for a lifetime, not for a purchase order — because the purchase order belongs to convenience, and that fight you’ll eventually lose, but the relationship is yours, and no platform, no algorithm, no roll-up can disrupt a person who’s simply decided to stay loyal to someone who earned it. Loyalty isn’t soft, and it isn’t nostalgia. It’s the only currency that compounds through every wave, in every industry, no matter how unsteady your footing feels this year. You already know exactly which people in your life you’d trust with anything, and exactly why. That knowing is the most durable asset you’ll ever hold.

I started a business as a kid, so for a long time I believed I deserved how I was treated — that the mistakes were mine and the humiliations were earned. I don’t believe that anymore. Life does teach in hard lessons, but discomfort was never a prerequisite for learning. I was simply a boy who happened to be right a little too early, with a mind that could see the future and couldn’t stop turning that same clarity into a weapon against himself.

That first check — the thirty-seven thousand, the Apple at eight dollars — has been compounding for forty-two years now. It became a very respectable sum. The gut was right. It was always right. I’d just spent far too long letting other people’s blind spots talk me out of my own eyes.

But the thing I think about most isn’t the money. It never was the money. It’s the coaster sets — the friends I rounded up and paid in pizza, a pack of kids after a full day of junior high, working in my parents’ carriage house around a table, making something by hand with no notion we were doing anything but having the time of our lives. The stock is proof the instinct was right. The pizza is proof it was always worth it. The relationships and the making were the real return. They always have been, in every version of this business I’ve built.

And I’ll tell you something about the road between then and now: I have never once taken the easy way. It doesn’t come naturally — I’m not built for shortcuts. For years I counted that as another flaw. Now I understand it’s where everything good actually came from. The hard way is where the nuance lives, where the understanding deepens, where you earn a perspective there’s no other route to. I don’t take the long road as penance. I take it because I love what it teaches me, and I always have.

I bet on Steve Jobs at fourteen not because I could see the future, but because I could feel, in a stranger, something I hadn’t yet found a word for in myself. It was never foresight. It was recognition — the same nerve, lighting up at the sight of someone who refused to be small. I intend to spend the rest of my life following that nerve, learning to trust the gut that was never actually wrong, and keeping my word to the people who stayed. There’s a French château in the plans, and a beach somewhere with my toes in the sand, and I intend to get there the way I’ve gotten everywhere worth going: the hard way, on my own terms, with my people around a table I set myself. And if I woke tomorrow with none of it — no studio, no stock, no name on the door — I’d round up my friends, order the pizza, and do every last bit of it the exact same way again. We’ll just all be wearing glasses this time. I’m fine with that.

Marble counters. Perfect lighting. Beige interiors. Heavy boxes with magnetic closures. A ribbon tied just so.

The experience feels expensive.

But the object inside?

Often it’s… fine.

Nice, maybe. Attractive. Well photographed. But rarely extraordinary.

After thirty years of making things for a living, I’ve come to believe something slightly uncomfortable:

Most luxury brands today are really packaging companies.

Not object makers.

What Luxury Used to Mean

Luxury once meant something very simple.

It meant craft.

A cabinetmaker in France who had spent fifty years perfecting a joint that no one would ever see.
A glassmaker in Murano who could feel when the temperature of molten glass shifted by a few degrees.
A Japanese artisan who sharpened knives using the same technique his grandfather used.

Luxury wasn’t about storytelling.
The object was the story.

The weight.
The material.
The patience required to make it.

You didn’t need branding to explain it.

You could feel it.

A Lesson I Learned in Paris

Years ago, I spent time wandering the flea markets of Paris.

Not the glossy ones tourists visit. The real ones — where the dealers arrive at dawn and objects sit on folding tables under grey skies.

I picked up a small tray one morning. Nothing fancy. Just a simple piece from the early 1900s.

The glass had weight. The image was slightly imperfect. The edges were bent by hand.

It was beautiful in a quiet way.

The dealer shrugged and said something that stayed with me:

“Things used to be made by people who expected them to live longer than they would.”

That sentence explained half of design history.

Japan Understands This Instinctively

Japan still respects this idea in a way most of the modern luxury world has forgotten.

In Kyoto, I once visited a small workshop where an elderly craftsman had been making lacquerware for over forty years.

His studio was silent.

No branding.
No marketing team.
No social media strategy.

Just hands, tools, and time.

He wasn’t designing objects to photograph well on Instagram.

He was designing objects to be touched for decades.

You could see the difference immediately.

Meanwhile, the Luxury Industry Became Theater

Over the last twenty years, something shifted.

Luxury brands discovered something powerful:

You don’t actually need extraordinary objects if you have extraordinary branding.

Influencers replaced artisans.

Scarcity replaced craftsmanship.

Packaging became the performance.

Some companies now spend more designing the box than the object itself.

And customers — understandably — often fall in love with the experience.

Who wouldn’t?

Beautiful lighting, careful storytelling, a sense that you’re participating in something rare.

But too often the object inside that beautiful box could have come from almost anywhere.

Australia Taught Me Something Else

Australia showed me another version of luxury.

There, I saw designers who worked with raw materials — wood, stone, leather — and respected the natural imperfection of those things.

Nothing looked overly polished.

But everything felt honest.

Luxury wasn’t about control.

It was about respect for the material.

Why We Still Make Things the Old Way

At Ben’s Garden, we still work using decoupage techniques that date back centuries.

The process is slow.

Images are applied by hand.
Glass is shaped and finished individually.
Each piece moves through many hands before it leaves the studio.

Sometimes people ask why we don’t automate more.

The honest answer is simple:

Because the imperfections are the point.

A perfectly manufactured object is often lifeless.

A handmade object carries small variations — tiny signals that another human being was there.

And those signals matter.

They make the object feel alive.

The Strange Future of Luxury

Here’s the irony.

As the world becomes more digital, more automated, more optimized…

People are starting to crave the opposite.

Objects with personality.
Objects with humor.
Objects that show evidence of human hands.

The things that once defined luxury.

Not branding.

Not marketing.

But craft.

A Simple Test

The next time you walk into a luxury store, try something simple.

Ignore the lighting.

Ignore the music.

Ignore the packaging.

Pick up the object and ask yourself one question:

Would this still feel special if no one knew the brand name?

If the answer is yes, you’re holding something rare.

If not…

You might just be holding very good packaging.
