The Constellation Index™ Founding Edition is not another business directory.

I have no interest in creating another digital list of names, logos, and websites that people scroll through once and forget.

The Index is a living cultural and relational record.

It is designed to help us answer different questions:

Who is here?

What is she building?

What does she know?

What does she care about?

What is she cultivating?

What can she offer?

What is she seeking?

And perhaps most importantly:

Who might she need to know?

Because one of the things I have learned through years of gathering women is this:

Relationships are infrastructure.

Sometimes what changes a business, an idea—or a life—isn’t another strategy.

It’s an introduction.

A recommendation.

A room.

A conversation.

Someone saying: I know somebody you should meet.

This Is About More Than Visibility

Visibility matters.

But visibility without relationship can become performance.

I want something deeper.

I want us to be able to discover the woman whose work we need.

To find the business we have been looking for.

To encounter somebody’s story before we encounter her résumé.

To know what another woman is dreaming about, building, questioning, or ready to receive.

To circulate our resources.

To make collaborations easier.

To make introductions more intentional.

To make it harder for extraordinary women doing meaningful work to remain invisible to one another.

That is the work of the Constellation Index™. That is sacred visibility.

And If You’re Reading This, You’re Already Part of It

This matters to me.

If you’ve been reading Soft Power Sundays, attending our gatherings, responding to these letters, sharing the work, sitting in our rooms, or simply allowing these ideas to accompany you—

I consider you part of the constellation.

Renewal Is What We Make Possible for Someone Else

I am particular about who calls me “Sis.”

Dolly Parton, perhaps, could have called me Sis—and I would not have flinched.

Dolly is sacred to many people.

And she holds a particular tenderness in the Black imagination.

Maybe it is because we recognize testimony when we hear it.

We recognize what it means to gather scraps, Scripture, sorrow, humor, hunger, hand-me-downs, and whatever beauty was available—and fashion them into something that insists:

I was here.

My people were here.

Our lives were worthy of song.

Dolly Parton died on August 25, 2026, at the age of eighty.

She was born on January 19, 1946, in Sevier County, Tennessee, and grew up as one of twelve children in the Great Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee.

She was not a Southern belle.

She was a daughter of Appalachia—a place too often flattened into caricature, poverty, and punch lines. She understood what it meant to come from people whose intelligence was not always recognized because it did not arrive wearing the right clothes, speaking the right English, or carrying the right credentials.

She also understood that shame is one of the ways power teaches people to abandon their origins.

Dolly did something more difficult than escape where she came from: she carried it with her without allowing it to confine her.

“She did not make poverty picturesque. She made poor people visible without surrendering their dignity.”

She Made Testimony Into Song

Her music was honest, raw, funny, mournful, and soulful. It drew from Appalachian ballads, gospel, country, bluegrass, working-class life, and the spiritual grammar of people accustomed to surviving without pretending survival was easy.

“Coat of Many Colors” was not simply a song about a handmade coat. It was a theology of reinterpretation. Her mother took what the world would call scraps and narrated them as abundance. Dolly took a memory that could have remained a source of humiliation and renewed it into inheritance.

The coat did not become valuable because poverty disappeared. It became valuable because love changed its meaning.

That is what testimony can do.

It does not deny what happened. It refuses to let what happened have the final word.

Black people know something about taking what was meant to diminish us and making from it language, music, worship, humor, style, family, resistance, and beauty. We know about turning scraps into quilts, sorrow into spirituals, kitchens into sanctuaries, porches into schools, and survival into culture.

Perhaps this is part of why Dolly felt familiar. Not identical. Not ours to claim. But recognizable.

The Woman Dolly Renewed

Dolly renewed more than songs. Across six decades, she repeatedly took identities the culture had narrowed and made more room inside them.

The Southern Woman

She refused the fantasy that Southern womanhood belonged only to gentility, inherited wealth, or respectable restraint. Her South included mountain women, poor women, church women, working women, funny women, women whose hands made something out of almost nothing.

She could honor where she came from without pretending it was innocent. She could love home without allowing home to determine the full measure of her life.

The Country Artist

Dolly wrote with the precision of a witness. Her songs gave language to women leaving, longing, laboring, bargaining, desiring, grieving, and choosing themselves. She crossed into pop, film, television, bluegrass, gospel, and rock without treating country music as something she had outgrown.

She expanded the house while keeping the mountain in her voice.

The Blonde Bombshell

She turned the image designed to make people underestimate her into both camouflage and command.

Dolly never asked permission to be brilliant and excessive, strategic and feminine, devout and funny, commercially ambitious and emotionally sincere. She understood that performance could be play, protection, and power. The hair, the rhinestones, the body, the jokes—none of it canceled the songwriter, owner, negotiator, or architect underneath.

The Christian Public Figure

Dolly spoke openly about prayer, Scripture, church, and God. Yet her public faith was rarely organized around domination. She did not seem interested in proving her holiness by withdrawing dignity from someone else.

Her witness was not perfect, and no public figure should be made saintly enough to escape examination. But she offered a version of Christian visibility that made room for humor, hospitality, contradiction, and human difference. She seemed to understand that faith becomes most credible when it enlarges our capacity to love.

The Businesswoman

Dolly understood ownership. She treated songwriting not merely as expression, but as intellectual property. She built Dollywood near the place that formed her, creating an economic engine that kept opportunity circulating through East Tennessee.

This matters. Returning is not only sentimental. Sometimes returning means bringing infrastructure, jobs, investment, and possibility back with you.

She did not confuse generosity with surrendering stewardship. She showed women that softness and business acumen are not opposites—and that one can remain warm without becoming easy to exploit.

The Actress Who Let Working Women Be Whole

Her films widened the cultural argument. In 9 to 5, she joined Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin in a comedy about sexism, harassment, unequal labor, and women discovering what they could change together. The title song became an anthem because it made structural indignity singable.

In The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, she played a woman whose authority exceeded the moral labels placed upon her. In Steel Magnolias, she entered an ensemble of Southern women whose beauty, grief, humor, and endurance lived side by side. Her film work kept returning to women as workers, friends, truth-tellers, caretakers, survivors, and creators of worlds.

Dolly did not need every character to be respectable before she allowed her to be human.

The Philanthropist

And then there were the books.

Dolly founded the Imagination Library in 1995 in honor of her father, who could not read or write. What began in Sevier County became an international book-gifting movement, mailing free books to children from birth to age five. By 2026, it had placed more than 300 million books into children’s hands.

This is where admiration becomes instruction.

She did not simply overcome an inheritance of limited access. She renewed it. Her father’s illiteracy became—not a family secret to conceal—but a doorway through which millions of children could enter a different future.

That is more than charity. It is memory transformed into infrastructure.

“Renewal is what we make possible for someone else.”

What Dolly Understood About Renewal

Renewal is not reinvention without memory.

It is not polishing the past until it becomes harmless. It is not preserving every inheritance simply because it is old. And it is not abandoning everything that formed us because some of it wounded us.

Renewal asks for discernment.

What still carries life?

What has become too small?

What protected our people but now limits us?

What must be repaired?

What must end?

What deserves another form—and another future?

Dolly renewed the Southern woman without denying the South. She renewed the country artist without deserting country music. She renewed the blonde bombshell by making the performance answer to her. She renewed the Christian public figure through a generosity of spirit. She renewed business by tying enterprise to place. She renewed inheritance by turning one father’s unfulfilled education into books for millions of children.

She kept asking, in one form or another: What can I make from what I have been given?

Now the question turns toward us.

What Have You Inherited That Does Not Need to Be Discarded—but Renewed?

Maybe it is a story your family stopped telling.

A faith that needs to be freed from fear.

A business that needs to remember whom it serves.

A recipe, ritual, language, craft, practice, property, relationship, or responsibility that cannot survive unchanged—but should not disappear.

Maybe the inheritance is not beautiful yet.

Maybe it has arrived as grief, unfinished work, an old wound, or a truth your body has been holding before your mind could name it.

Renewal does not ask you to call harm holy. It asks whether courage, imagination, and care can change what the inheritance makes possible next.

The measure of renewal is not simply that we feel different.

It is that someone can live differently because we practiced it.

There is a question I haven’t been able to leave alone:

Are you angry enough to love?

We already know human beings can become angry enough to destroy.

We have demonstrated that capacity across centuries, borders, religions, races, political ideologies and empires.

We can become angry enough to kill.

Angry enough to exile.

Angry enough to enslave.

Angry enough to bomb.

Angry enough to decide that another human being is undeserving of dignity, safety, freedom—or life.

But I’ve been wondering about the opposite.

Can we become angry enough to love?

Not sentimental love.

Not polite love.

And certainly not the kind of “love” that requires someone experiencing oppression to remain agreeable while harm is being done to them.

I’m talking about love with muscle.

The kind of love that looks directly at suffering and says:

This should not be.

And then asks:

What is mine to do about it?

This is where REVEAL, the third movement of my Five R’s, is taking me.

REMEMBER — locate yourself.

ROOT — discern what formed you and what deserves to continue through you.

REVEAL — examine what that formation actually produces.

That means REVEAL isn’t primarily about visibility at all.

It’s about evidence.

Galatians 5 gives me language for this. Spiritual formation isn’t described only by what someone claims to believe. It has fruit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

Eventually, everything reveals itself by its fruit.

Our faith.

Our politics.

Our leadership.

Our theology.

Our healing.

Our anger.

Our activism.

Our love.

The question isn’t simply:

What do you believe?

What does believing it make you become?

And what becomes possible—or impossible—for other people because you believe it?

WHAT IS THE FRUIT OF YOUR BELIEF?

I’ve been thinking about one of those internet debates constructed around opposition: one person versus twenty people.

And increasingly, the word that interests me most is versus.

Versus assumes contest.

Contest requires stakes.

So what exactly are we trying to win?

Agreement?

Conversion?

Doctrinal superiority?

Vindication?

Someone’s soul?

What would have happened if curiosity had replaced combat?

What if instead of asking, Who won?, we asked:

What did everyone’s beliefs reveal about their capacity to encounter another human being?

Because I’m becoming considerably less interested in whether someone can successfully defend their theology than I am in another question:

What does your theology do to people?

Christianity can become obsessed with doctrinal correctness while failing at mercy.

New Thought can become obsessed with individual consciousness while failing at structural analysis.

Christianity can weaponize sin.

New Age spirituality can weaponize vibration.

One person can look at someone suffering and say:

You aren’t right with God.

Another can look at the same person and say:

Your consciousness attracted this.

Different vocabulary.

Sometimes remarkably similar violence.

Because weaponization doesn’t belong to one tradition.

It belongs to human beings.

We weaponize Scripture.

We weaponize nationalism.

We weaponize race.

We weaponize gender.

We weaponize morality.

We weaponize therapy language.

We weaponize boundaries.

We weaponize enlightenment.

Hell, we can even weaponize love when “love” really means:

Submit quietly while I harm you.

A beautiful vocabulary does not guarantee beautiful fruit.

Neither does a Bible.

Neither does sage.

Neither does therapy.

Neither does a degree.

Neither does a DEI statement.

Neither does calling yourself “conscious.”

The fruit tells us something the label cannot.

But every meaningful thing I have ever built has also rested upon an invisible infrastructure of relationships.

Someone made an introduction.

Someone offered a room.

Someone prayed.

Someone shared a post.

Someone bought a ticket before the room was full.

Someone said my name in a conversation I was not in.

Someone reminded me who I was when fear, fatigue or disappointment made it difficult for me to remember for myself.

This became especially clear as we premiered the first episode of The Ber-Henda Williams Show.

This was not my launch. It was ours.

The show may carry my name, but it carries the fingerprints, prayers, encouragement and contributions of a constellation of people.

That is how culture shifts.

Not because one extraordinary person appears and rescues everyone.

Not because one woman works herself into exhaustion trying to carry an entire vision alone.

Culture shifts when people recognize that what they carry matters—and offer it in relationship to something larger.

This is why I say that relationships are infrastructure.

They are not the soft extra we tend to after the “real work” has been completed. They are part of the real work.

The question is not simply:

What are you building?

The deeper question is:

Who are you becoming in relationship with as you build it?

Who tells you the truth?

Who protects your dignity?

Who amplifies your voice?

Who reminds you that you are not required to perform strength every day?

Who can hold one corner of the vision while you tend to another?

And whose work are you willing to champion—not because of what you may receive in return, but because you recognize its value?

A constellation is not created by one bright star. It is created by distinct lights connected in relationship.

Perhaps the next stage of your work does not require more striving.

Perhaps it requires deeper trust, clearer invitations and the courage to stop building alone.

We gather. We tell stories. We become. Together.

I recently joined intuitive mindfulness and meditation teacher Claudia Torres, founder of Presently Aqui, for a deeply reflective conversation about identity, community, caregiving, inherited resilience and finding our way back to ourselves.

Soft Power for an Emerging World

WE GATHER. WE TELL STORIES. WE BECOME.

I walked in a fashion show this weekend.

Now, I have done a lot of things in my life. I have performed poetry, stood behind microphones, facilitated rooms, taught, spoken, produced events and gathered women.

But something happened to me on that runway.

I felt good.

No. Let me tell the whole truth.

I felt inhabited.

Whew, child.

I felt the stirring and emanation of the Holy Spirit in, through and as me.

Not somewhere above me.

Not standing outside of me, watching me.

Not waiting for me at the end of the runway.

In me.

Moving through my body. Animating my walk. Straightening my posture. Lifting my head. Adorning me from the inside.

Yes, I wore a beautiful vestment. My hair was done. My face was made up. I was adorned.

But the deepest adornment was not what I was wearing.

It was the Divine Life I could feel moving within me.

For those few moments, I was not reaching for the woman I have been envisioning.

I was her.

Elegant.

Graceful.

Powerful.

Present.

Unashamed.

I thought of Ntozake Shange:

“i found god in myself / & i loved her fiercely.”

That was it.

I found God in myself.

And for once, I did not rush to make myself smaller so the experience would sound more acceptable.

Because sometimes women are taught that we can acknowledge God working around us, above us and for us—but we had better be careful about naming the Divine moving in, through and as us.

We can testify about being blessed, but we should not sound too powerful.

We can be grateful, but not too embodied.

We can shine, but please make sure everybody understands that we did not create the light.

Pause for the Cause.

What if the light does not need us to deny ourselves in order to honor its Source?

What if the Divine Life within us is not a reason for shame, but a call to remembrance?

I walk adorned in remembrance of the Divine Life within me.

I have been thinking about that sentence ever since.

Because the runway did not make me someone new.

It revealed the woman who was already there.

And perhaps that is what a Culture Shifter does.

A Culture Shifter tends the culture within herself so that what she creates around herself can change.

Culture does not only live in governments, corporations, schools, churches or media institutions.

Culture lives in our bodies.

Our homes.

Our businesses.

Our language.

Our relationships.

The way we lead.

The way we gather.

The way we treat ourselves when no one is watching.

The way we make room—or refuse to make room—for one another.

The runway reminded me that transformation does not always begin with becoming more.

Sometimes it begins with remembering what is already true.

And when I stepped back and looked at what we are building this September, I realized that September has been arranging itself around that same truth.

I did not intentionally sit down and say, “Let me create three events and give everybody somewhere else to be.”

Y’all have enough places to be.

I have enough things to produce.

But as the pieces came together, I could see a formation taking shape.

REMEMBER.

REAP.

REVEAL.

Not three disconnected events.

Three movements in one journey.

A journey of return, discernment and embodiment.

There are truths the body carries long before the mind is willing—or able—to name them.

The body keeps whispering.

REVEAL is an invitation to stop treating the body as an inconvenient vehicle carrying the “important” parts of us around.

What if the body is part of our knowing?

What if our lived experiences contain wisdom?

What if healing is not about performing wholeness, but becoming honest about what has been asking to be witnessed?

This gathering gives language to what many women have carried quietly.

Not a calendar of events.

A living formation.

And there are many ways to enter.

Some of you will come to Bamboo and sit in the room with us.

Some will enter Seasonal Formation™ and tend the culture within yourselves.

Some will join us for My Body Knew Before I Did and hear your own experience reflected through another woman’s story.

Some will share these invitations.

Some will nominate women whose work deserves to be witnessed.

Some will bring a sister, colleague or friend.

Some will open doors.

Some will invest in the production, storytelling and gathering required to sustain this work.

And that brings me to something new.

The Culture Shift(Her) Champion

A Culture Shift(Her) Champion is someone who understands that stories, media, gatherings and community are not extras.

They are cultural infrastructure.

She understands that meaningful work does not sustain itself through vision alone.

It requires people.

Resources.

Introductions.

Investment.

Care.

Shared stewardship.

A Culture Shift(Her) Champion is not a rescuer. She is an advocate, amplifier and partner in shared stewardship.

She sees what is being built and asks:

“How can I help carry this forward?”

Some Champions invest financially.

Some sponsor another woman’s seat.

Some introduce us to an aligned institution or community partner.

Some nominate women whose stories deserve to be witnessed.

Some open their spaces.

Some amplify the invitation.

Some show up and bring someone with them.

Every Champion does not contribute in the same way.

But each one recognizes that if we want more humane leadership, dignified storytelling, stronger relationships and spaces where people can fully arrive as themselves, then we must help build and sustain those spaces together.

The world we want will not be built by one charismatic leader, one institution or one viral moment.

We build it together.

Relationship by relationship.

Story by story.

Room by intimate room.

I will share more soon about becoming a Culture Shift(Her) Champion.

For today, I simply want to invite you to locate yourself in the journey.

Where are you being called to enter?

What do you need to remember?

What are you ready to reap?

What is asking to be revealed?

And who might need you to help them find their door?

Can I get a witness?

This weekend, I walked a runway and remembered something my spirit and body already knew.

The Divine Life was not waiting for me at the end.

It was within me the entire time.

May you remember that the Divine Life is not somewhere outside of you.

May you feel it stirring in, through and as you.

May it straighten your posture.

Lift your head.

Guide your feet.

And when your moment comes to walk—

May you recognize the woman walking.

Culture Shift(Hers) Unite™

We Gather. We Tell Stories. We Reveal.

Last Sunday, we remembered.

We returned to home.

Not necessarily the house we grew up in.

Not even necessarily a place.

But the people, music, rituals, stories, smells, prayers, recipes, neighborhoods and memories that can help us locate ourselves when life has made us feel disoriented.

We remembered that sometimes the thing we think we’ve lost isn’t gone.

Sometimes we simply need to find our way back to it.

But remembering raises another question.

Because once I remember where I come from, I have to decide:

What am I going to remain rooted in?

And Chile.

You know I cannot talk about roots without taking us directly into what I call:

The Mother District.

The Mother District is the inherited geography of our becoming.

Not just where we are from.

But what formed our first understanding of who we were allowed to be.

It is the first territory we learn to inhabit.

And I don’t mean “mother” only as the woman who gave birth to us.

The Mother District is larger than any one person.

It is mother.

Grandmother.

Auntie.

Church mother.

Neighborhood.

Kitchen.

School.

Faith.

Language.

Race.

Class.

Culture.

Migration.

Music.

Food.

Expectation.

Silence.

The rules nobody ever wrote down because everybody somehow knew them.

It is the geography that taught us:

This is who we are.

This is how we survive.

This is what a good woman does.

This is what we don’t tell anybody.

This is how you make something out of nothing.

This is what you do when you’re tired.

This is who gets fed first.

This is what strength looks like.

Before we had language for identity, the Mother District was already mapping us.

And some of that mapping saved our lives.

Some of it gave us a people.

A rhythm.

A theology.

A sense of humor.

A way to season food without measuring a damn thing.

A song for grief.

A prayer for trouble.

A phone call when somebody dies.

A casserole when somebody gets sick.

A little money slipped quietly into somebody’s hand.

A way of saying baby, come sit down that could regulate a nervous system before any of us had ever heard the phrase “nervous-system regulation.”

That’s inheritance, too.

And I don’t want us to become so sophisticated in our healing language that we forget that our people had technologies of care long before we had terminology for them.

But there is something else about roots.

Roots don’t only tell us where we come from.

They tell us what we’ve been drawing nourishment from.

And that’s where ROOT gets complicated.

Because everything inherited isn’t nourishment.

Some of what lives in the Mother District is beautiful.

And some of it was born from necessity.

Hyper-independence.

Over-functioning.

Silence.

Scarcity.

Respectability.

Being needed.

Being agreeable.

Making yourself useful.

Keeping family business inside the family.

Working when you’re sick.

Showing up when you’re grieving.

Calling exhaustion commitment.

Calling self-abandonment service.

Calling never needing anybody “strength.”

These were not necessarily character flaws.

Sometimes they were survival technologies.

That is an important distinction.

There were women before us who did what they had to do with the choices available to them.

And I refuse to look backward with the privilege of choices they may not have had and judge them for surviving.

But gratitude for what saved them does not require us to reproduce it.

Whew.

Sit there.

Because lineage is not instruction.

And honoring our mothers does not require becoming our mothers.

Honoring our ancestors does not require reenacting every survival strategy they needed.

Maybe one of the most loving things we can say to the women who came before us is:

You carried this far enough.

I’ll take it from here.

And taking it from here might look different.

That has been sitting with me because recently, during Seasonal Formation, we entered the Mother District.

One of the women who experienced the practice reflected afterward on the women who came before her — women she described as resilient and hardworking, women who carried so much.

And what emerged for her was beautiful:

“It is never too late to choose softness.”

Not because softness rejects those women.

But because perhaps softness is one of the freedoms their labor helped make possible.

That stopped me.

Because what if healing lineage isn’t always about carrying something forward?

What if sometimes lineage is healed because somebody finally gets to put something down?

ROOTS ARE NOT CHAINS.

I want that distinction made clearly.

A root nourishes.

A chain confines.

And sometimes we confuse the two because both connect us to something behind us.

So part of rooting is discernment.

What connects me to my people?

And:

What keeps me captive to a pattern?

Those are not the same question.

Maybe you’ve inherited extraordinary faith —

but also fear.

Maybe you’ve inherited resourcefulness —

but also scarcity.

Maybe you’ve inherited service —

but also self-erasure.

Maybe you’ve inherited ambition —

but also the belief that your worth lives inside your productivity.

Maybe you’ve inherited strength —

but no permission to be held.

We don’t have to burn down the Mother District.

We learn to tend the soil.

We preserve what feeds life.

We compost what can become something new.

And we stop planting ourselves in what cannot sustain us.

This week, I misplaced a notebook.

Not just any notebook.

The notebook.

The one with prayers in it. Theology. Fragments. Ideas. Things that came to me in the middle of living that I knew I needed to write down because I might need them again.

I looked for it.

Couldn’t find it.

Got irritated.

And then...

There it was. 😂

Right there.

And when I found it, I laughed because sometimes Spirit will hand you a sermon with absolutely no subtlety.

Sometimes the thing you think you’ve lost is still there.

Maybe that is what remembering is.

Not nostalgia.

Not romanticizing the past.

Not pretending everything behind us was better.

Retrieval.

The sacred practice of recovering what fear, performance, survival, oppression, grief, urgency, assimilation, capitalism - or simply the demands of living - have taught us to forget.

Because forgetting is not always accidental.

There are systems that benefit when we forget.

When we forget that rest belonged to us before it became a commodity.

When we forget that our grandmothers knew how to make something from almost nothing.

When we forget that people organized around kitchen tables and church basements and beauty shops and front porches.

When we forget that community existed before somebody called it networking.

When we forget that we have survived disorienting times before.

And I want to be careful here.

I am not interested in turning our ancestors’ suffering into inspirational content.

Trauma is not an aesthetic.

But neither do I want us to inherit only the wound.

We also inherited the wisdom.

WE HAVE BEEN HERE BEFORE

History gives us more than a record of what happened to people.

It can also give us a record of what people did next.

In Birmingham in 1963, young people stepped into a movement adults had been building for years. Children and teenagers organized, marched, endured arrest and violence, and helped force a nation to confront segregation.

They remind us that power does not always come from the people institutions have declared powerful.

Sometimes revolution looks like young people deciding they will no longer wait for permission.

Sometimes it begins around a kitchen table.

Sometimes it travels through a church basement.

Sometimes somebody whispers an idea to somebody else, and suddenly a community remembers its collective power.

Our histories of remembering extend beyond any one people.

Irish families fleeing the Great Famine crossed an ocean carrying grief and displacement - but they also carried culture, memory, faith, food, music, traditions, and ways of belonging.

And then there are histories we have allowed to become less visible.

The Armenian Genocide is one of them.

Between the spring of 1915 and autumn of 1916, Ottoman authorities carried out mass deportations, killings, and other measures that resulted in the deaths of at least 664,000 and possibly as many as 1.2 million Armenian men, women, and children.

I remember encountering a billboard about the Armenian Genocide and being disturbed not only by what happened, but by how little I had heard about it.

It made me think about whose histories we collectively remember and whose we permit to fade.

I grieve with any people whose lineage carries collective violence, displacement, erasure, or attempted annihilation.

Because remembering another people’s suffering does not diminish our own.

It enlarges our humanity.

Across cultures and generations, people have experienced displacement, oppression, famine, migration, violence, exclusion, and enormous uncertainty.

And still -

They cooked.

They sang.

They prayed.

They organized.

They told stories.

They made families.

They built institutions.

They made beauty.

They remembered.

Not because remembering erased what happened.

Because remembering helped them locate themselves inside what was happening.

There is a difference.

MEMORY CAN BE A COMPASS

When the present becomes disorienting, lineage can help us locate ourselves.

Not because our ancestors have a ready-made answer for every modern problem.

They don’t.

But they leave evidence.

We have been human before.

We have experienced uncertainty before.

We have had to make decisions without knowing how everything would turn out.

We have gathered around tables without strategic plans.

We have created community without algorithms.

We have cared for one another without calling it a framework.

Sometimes the question isn’t: What should I do?

Sometimes the questions are:

What do I already know?

What did my people teach me?

What has my body been trying to remember?

What practices have carried me before?

Where is home?

DOROTHY KNEW SOMETHING ABOUT THIS

And this is where Dorothy comes in.

Because The Wizard of Oz and - especially for me - The Wiz have something to teach us about formation.

Dorothy spends the journey trying to get home.

Along the way, she encounters the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Lion.

One is searching for intellect.

One for heart.

One for courage.

Mind. Heart. Courage.

Virtues.

Faculties we need to make our way through an uncertain world.

And the revelation at the end isn’t that the journey was unnecessary.

Dorothy needed the road.

She needed the encounters.

She needed discomfort.

She needed relationship.

She needed opposition.

She needed to discover capacities that comfort alone could not reveal.

But ultimately, what she was searching for was not something a powerful man could bestow upon her.

The journey revealed what was already present.

That is formation.

Not becoming someone else.

Becoming more fully who you already are.

While writing this, I put Stephanie Mills’s “Home” on again.

And I got chills.

I’ve known this song.

But today, it was almost as though I heard it for the first time.

Maybe because I was listening from a different place.

That’s another thing about memory.

We can return to the same thing and discover that we are not the same person returning.

Home changes meaning as we change.

And home doesn’t have to mean the house where you grew up.

Because I know home was not safe for everyone.

Home can be chosen.

Home can be created.

Home can be a person.

A practice.

A table.

A song.

A community.

A relationship with yourself in which you no longer have to abandon pieces of yourself to belong.

Sometimes home is simply the place - internal or external - where your body realizes:

There are moments when you arrive at a threshold and realize:

Oh. This is what we’ve been building.

Thursday night, the first episode of The Ber-Henda Williams Show entered the world.

And I’ve been sitting with what that means.

Not simply because I have a talk show now.

Lord knows I did not need another thing to put on a bio. 😂

But because I could suddenly see more clearly how the pieces of this work have been finding one another.

Every threshold asks something of us.

I’ve been thinking a lot about thresholds lately.

A threshold is an in-between place.

You have left something, but you haven’t completely arrived at what comes next.

And those spaces can be uncomfortable because we are so accustomed to demanding certainty from ourselves.

What’s the plan?

What’s next?

What are you building?

Where is this going?

But formation has taught me that sometimes the more sacred question is:

What is this season asking me to notice?

And I think I know the word for September.

REVEAL.

Not perform.

Not prove.

Not manufacture.

Not force something into existence because the algorithm—or capitalism—or somebody else’s timeline says we should.

Reveal.

What is already present that hasn’t had enough space to become visible?

What truth is asking for language?

What work is ready for witnesses?

What has your body known before your mind could explain it?

What becomes possible when we stop manufacturing versions of ourselves and become curious about what is already trying to emerge?

September will hold three expressions of that question.

Tomorrow, I want to talk about home.

Not simply the house we came from.

But the people, practices, memories, music, lineage and sacred places that help us locate ourselves again when the world has made us forget where we are.

Before we ask ourselves to become something new, perhaps we should remember what already knows the way.

REMEMBER → ROOT → REVEAL

Tonight, we stand at the threshold.

Tomorrow, we remember.

And in September—

There is a quiet pressure in our culture to always become someone new.

A new title.

A new strategy.

A new version of ourselves.

But what if transformation isn’t about becoming someone else?

What if it’s about remembering who we’ve always been?

Not nostalgia.

She spoke about the feminine wisdom of shedding—not as weakness, but as preparation.

Every season asks us to release something before we can receive something new.

She challenged us to think differently about technology—not as something to fear or blindly embrace, but as a tool to steward wisely.

It asks better questions.

• What am I partnering with?

• What am I resisting?

• What deserves discernment instead of reaction?

• How can technology strengthen relationships instead of replacing them?

Remembering Our Natural Ways of Being

Every now and then, a conversation stays with you long after it ends.

This was one of those conversations.

Before recording our interview together, Susan Bailey stepped into her garden to gather a bouquet of flowers. As she walked back toward the house, a bumblebee landed gently on the flowers in her hands, gathered its pollen, and continued on its journey.

Later that day, during our conversation, Susan found herself asking a question that has stayed with both of us:

“If we’re nature… how could we not have intuition?”

Perhaps intuition isn’t something we need to find.

Perhaps we’ve simply forgotten how to listen.

Together, we explored intuition, awe, belonging, leadership, and the seasons of a human life.

Remember Before You Rush

Yesterday, during Soft Power Sundays, we reflected on grief—not as something to conquer, but as something that sometimes asks us to keep living while loss is still happening.

This morning, however, I woke up somewhere different.

Not because grief disappeared.

But because remembrance arrived.

August invites us into courage.

Yet courage rarely begins with action.

It begins with remembering.

Remembering who we are.

Remembering what we’ve survived.

Remembering the communities that carried us.

Remembering that before we strive, we already belong.

Throughout August, we’ll journey together through five movements:

• Remember

• Root

• Renew

• Reveal

• Radiate

My hope is that these won’t simply become ideas we admire.

They’ll become practices we live.

Grief Needs an Appointment

This week’s Soft Power Sunday invited us into a different relationship with grief.

Grief doesn’t always arrive politely, and it rarely leaves on our preferred timeline. Sometimes the most courageous thing we can do is stop expecting it to disappear and instead learn how to keep living while loss is still happening.

Courage isn’t always found in overcoming.

Sometimes courage is found in remaining present, extending compassion to ourselves, and continuing to move faithfully through the season we’re in.

How do we keep living when grief doesn’t have the decency to arrive one loss at a time?

My therapist gave me a word recently that I keep turning over:

Sequencing.

I understood it intellectually when she said it.

Everything does not have to be attended to at once. Grief can be acknowledged without being given responsibility for the entire day. Work can receive my attention without pretending grief has disappeared. Joy can arrive without betraying sorrow.

Beautiful.

And considerably harder to practice when your life contains several clocks, all ticking at the same time.

Recently, my first Spanish teacher died.

A few weeks before her death, she had become non-responsive. Eventually, she was moved into hospice. I knew what that meant without knowing exactly when the call would come.

And while I was carrying that uncertainty, I was also preparing to host a Culture Shift(Hers) Unite™ Un-Networking™ gathering.

Except nothing seemed to be working.

I needed cards printed for the tables. I called three different FedEx Office locations. No one could complete the job.

I sent the entire guest list the wrong address.

Technology decided it had no interest in being part of my ministry that weekend.

And underneath all of that logistical chaos was grief.

I didn’t know whether my Spanish teacher would still be here by the time I entered that room.

I didn’t know what news the weekend might bring.

I only knew I had a room to hold.

And somehow,

the room held me.

Four extraordinary volunteers showed up with precisely the spirit of hospitality I needed.

Jo, one of my mother’s best friends, was there.

My father was there.

Women came. Men came. Humans came.

And what filled the room wasn’t perfection.

It was kindness.

Generosity.

Warmth.

Presence.

Love.

I had been so concerned with whether I could hold the room that I hadn’t considered the possibility that the room might hold me, too.

Maybe that’s part of what community is for.

GRIEF DOESN’T ARRIVE ALONE

My Spanish teacher died on a Tuesday.

We gathered for her homegoing that Friday.

And less than a week later, July 30 arrived—what would have been my mother’s 81st birthday.

Meanwhile, I am caring for my father, who has dementia.

Dementia has taught me that grief doesn’t always wait for death.

Sometimes grief occurs while someone you love is sitting across from you.

There are losses without funerals.

Changes without ceremonies.

Moments when someone is still physically here and yet something you once knew has already disappeared.

It is a long goodbye.

So when I say I am grieving, I am not speaking about one event.

There is fresh grief.

There is old grief.

There is anticipatory grief.

There is the grief that accompanies caregiving.

There is the grief of watching a parent change.

There is the grief of having another birthday arrive for my mother without my mother here to celebrate it.

And there are other kinds of loss that don’t necessarily belong to death at all.

Grief doesn’t have the decency to arrive one loss at a time.

And yet, neither does life.

Emails still arrive.

Bills still have due dates.

My business is growing and changing.

There are sponsorships to cultivate.

There are proposals to write.

There are gatherings to produce.

There is a talk show preparing to return.

There are people I love.

There are dreams I still want.

There is pleasure I want to experience.

There is a future I am actively building.

Grief did not stop my life.

And my life did not stop my grief.

Maybe that’s the tension I’ve been trying to understand.

GIVE YOUR GRIEF AN APPOINTMENT

I’ve been thinking about what sequencing might actually look like in practice.

Perhaps it begins with giving grief an appointment.

Not because grief can be controlled.

Certainly not because fifteen minutes with a journal is sufficient for mourning someone you love.

But because there is something tender about saying to grief:

I know you’re here.

I will not abandon you.

I will come sit with you.

Maybe I put on a song.

Maybe I write.

Maybe I cry.

Maybe I pray.

Maybe I read a poem.

Maybe I sit quietly and allow memory to have me for a while.

And when that time ends, perhaps I can say:

I’ll come back.

Not I’m done grieving.

Not time to be productive.

Just:

I’ll come back.

Because perhaps sequencing isn’t compartmentalization at all.

Perhaps sequencing is trusting myself to return.

EVERYTHING CANNOT BE NOW

I am beginning to wonder whether some of my overwhelm isn’t simply because I am carrying too much.

I am.

But I think there is another layer.

Everything I carry sometimes feels as though it requires me simultaneously.

Grief says now.

Money says now.

Dad says now.

The business says now.

My body says now.

The future says now.

The people I love say: NOW.

And when everything has been marked urgent, it becomes difficult to discern what actually requires my attention first.

Sequencing offers me another sentence:

This matters. And it does not all have to be held in this exact moment.

That sentence has been medicine.

Because I don’t have to solve my grief before writing the proposal.

I don’t have to stop missing my mother before experiencing pleasure.

I don’t have to become fearless before growing my business.

I don’t have to resolve every uncertainty before allowing myself to rest.

And I don’t have to pretend I’m okay in order to lead.

I can ask instead:

What is mine to hold right now?

And then:

What can hold me while I hold it?

THE ROOM THAT HELD ME

I keep returning to that gathering.

Because I think I understand now why I needed that room as much as anyone who attended it.

I talk often about creating the conditions where people can remember who they are.

That day, other people created those conditions for me.

Nobody needed to fix my grief.

Nobody needed to give me a lesson about loss.

Nobody needed to explain why things happen.

They showed up.

They helped.

They welcomed people.

They extended kindness.

They made the room hospitable.

And somehow, that hospitality gave my grief somewhere to sit.

Maybe this is what I’ve been trying to articulate when I talk about Love as Infrastructure.

Love becomes infrastructure when it is sturdy enough to hold real life.

Not just our aspirations.

Not just our polished selves.

Not just the version of us who remembered the cards, sent the right address, slept eight hours, answered every email, and arrived spiritually centered.

Love has to be able to hold the woman whose mother is gone.

The daughter experiencing a long goodbye with her father.

The student burying her teacher.

The founder worried about money.

The leader who still has to lead.

The human being who cannot always separate all of those identities neatly before entering the room.

Sometimes right relationship looks like building a room where none of her has to be left outside.

PERHAPS THIS IS ATTUNEMENT TOO

I’ve been writing lately about attunement.

About the practices that help us return.

Music.

Prayer.

Poetry.

Silence.

Movement.

Community.

I’m realizing now that attunement doesn’t always bring me back to happiness.

Sometimes attunement helps me become present enough to recognize:

I am sad.

Or tired.

Or afraid.

Or grieving.

And then, instead of immediately trying to transform the feeling, I can become curious about what it needs.

Maybe remembrance isn’t always remembering that everything will be okay.

Sometimes remembrance is:

I don’t have to be okay to remain held.

That feels important.

Especially for those of us who have learned how to be the holder.

The organizer.

The caregiver.

The leader.

The woman who figures it out.

The person everybody trusts to make the room happen.

There must also be rooms where the holder gets held.

And perhaps that is one of the most sacred forms of community we can create.

Not spaces where grief disappears.

Spaces where grief doesn’t have to disappear for us to belong.

This week, my mother’s 81st birthday came and went without her.

I didn’t ask myself to finish grieving.

I am learning instead to give grief an appointment.

To listen for what needs my attention.

To allow what is good to remain good, even while something hurts.

And to remember the room.

The people who showed up.

The kindness I didn’t manufacture.

The hospitality I received while trying to offer hospitality to everyone else.

Evidence that sometimes, while we are busy wondering whether we have the capacity to carry everything entrusted to us,

Love quietly arranges chairs around us and says:

You don’t have to carry this part alone.

Why every act of leadership begins with attunement

Before an orchestra performs, there is a sound most audiences never come to hear.

Before the conductor raises the baton, before the first note fills the room, the musicians tune their instruments.

No one applauds the tuning.

It isn’t the performance.

But every musician knows the same truth:

Without attunement, there can be no harmony.

I’ve begun to wonder if leadership works the same way.

We spend enormous energy preparing presentations, strategies, budgets, performance reviews, carefully crafted plans, and difficult conversations.

Far less attention is given to preparing the instrument through which all those things are expressed.

Ourselves.

The ancient invitation of Psalm 46:10 is:

“Be still, and know that I am God.”¹

For much of my life, I understood stillness primarily as the absence of movement.

Now I hear something deeper in those words.

Be still enough to notice.

Be still enough to receive.

Be still enough to remember what fear, urgency, and noise can make easy to forget.

Perhaps stillness is not the opposite of action.

Perhaps it is the beginning of wise action.

Perhaps it is the first act of attunement.

Learning to Tune

Over the past year, I’ve written about prayer, poetry, praise and worship, silence, hospitality, community, leadership, and music.

I knew they belonged together.

I simply hadn’t discovered the word that connected them.

I think that word is attunement.

Prayer attunes my attention.

Praise attunes my affection.

Poetry attunes my imagination.

Silence attunes my awareness.

Hospitality attunes my relationships.

Community attunes my belonging.

Music attunes my soul.

None of these practices are the melody.

They prepare me to live it.

What Are We Actually Trying to Achieve?

Lately, I’ve found myself asking a different question.

When we pray—

when we meditate—

when we write gratitude lists—

when we worship—

what are we actually trying to achieve?

The more I sit with that question, the less convinced I am that the goal is completing the practice itself.

I wonder if the goal has always been reorientation.

Our attention is constantly being shaped.

Fear can narrow it.

Stress can narrow it.

Urgency can narrow it.

When we perceive a threat, the brain naturally gives priority to what feels dangerous or unresolved. Our awareness contracts around the problem in front of us.²

That is not a personal failure.

It is part of the body’s effort to protect us.

But it can also mean that we slowly lose sight of beauty, generosity, goodness, connection, and hope—not because they have disappeared, but because our attention has become consumed elsewhere.

Attunement helps widen the frame.

It does not ask us to deny what is difficult.

It helps us remember that difficulty is rarely the whole story.

Perhaps spiritual practices are not primarily about becoming more religious.

Perhaps they are about helping us return.

Gratitude Is a Pathway, Not the Destination

For years, I believed gratitude was the practice.

Now I think gratitude is one beautiful pathway.

Gratitude practices can help redirect our attention toward goodness, support, generosity, and connection. Research has associated gratitude interventions with modest improvements in emotional well-being, positive affect, and some symptoms of anxiety and depression, although their effects vary from person to person.³

That matters.

But what are we looking to achieve when we make the list?

Is the goal to produce three grateful thoughts?

Are we trying to perform gratitude correctly?

Or are we cultivating the ability to perceive reality more truthfully?

Gratitude may help us recognize what fear has made difficult to see.

It may remind us that we are not alone.

That support exists.

That beauty remains.

That provision has appeared before.

That sorrow and goodness can occupy the same life.

But gratitude has never been the destination.

The destination is remembrance.

Gratitude is simply one way we return.

Music is another.

Poetry.

Contemplative prayer.

A walk through the woods.

Gardening.

Cooking.

Dance.

Painting.

A conversation with someone who reminds us who we are.

The question is no longer:

“Did I complete my spiritual practice today?”

The question becomes:

“What helps me remember?”

That question feels more spacious.

More compassionate.

More hospitable.

Because not every heart returns by the same road.

A gratitude list may genuinely reorient one person.

Another person may faithfully write the list and feel nothing but pressure to manufacture an emotion they cannot presently access.

That does not mean they are ungrateful.

It may simply mean their soul receives through another doorway.

Perhaps a song allows their body to exhale.

Perhaps silence makes room for grief.

Perhaps movement helps them feel alive again.

Perhaps prayer gives language to what they cannot carry alone.

Perhaps poetry widens the world.

The practice is not sacred because everyone performs it identically.

The practice becomes sacred because it helps us return to right relationship.

A Compass for Discernment

This realization has quietly changed how I discern nearly everything.

Instead of asking whether a practice fits neatly into the categories I inherited, I now ask:

• Does this deepen my love for God?

• Does this deepen my love for my neighbor?

• Does it help me love myself as one created in the image of God?

• Does it make me more truthful?

• More compassionate?

• More humble?

• More free?

• Is it ultimately in service of Love?

These questions have become my compass.

Because I no longer believe lasting change begins with information alone.

I believe it begins with reorientation.

Every day offers us another opportunity to turn toward what is true, beautiful, and life-giving.

Again.

And again.

And again.

The Practice of Remembrance™

I’ve begun calling this The Practice of Remembrance™.

It is the lifelong work of continually attuning our hearts to what matters most so that we can create the conditions for right relationship—

with ourselves,

with one another,

with God,

and with the work entrusted to us.

For a long time, I thought remembrance was about memory.

Now I think it is about orientation.

It is the quiet, daily practice of returning.

Returning to ourselves.

Returning to one another.

Returning to God.

Returning to what matters most.

We remember not because we have forgotten every fact.

We remember because fear, grief, exhaustion, urgency, and social conditioning can pull us away from what we know.

Remembrance turns us again.

Honey Theology™

As this idea has continued to unfold, another image keeps returning to me.

Honey.

Throughout Scripture, honey is associated with abundance, delight, nourishment, and promise.

Honey does not transform by force.

It transforms through nourishment.

The more I sit with that image, the more I wonder if the spiritual life works the same way.

Perhaps transformation does not happen because we push harder.

Perhaps it happens because we learn to receive what nourishes us.

I’ve begun calling that Honey Theology™.

Not because honey is sentimental.

But because it reminds me that love rarely grows through coercion.

It grows where it is continually nourished.

The Gentle Gardener does not stand over a seed and demand that it bloom.

The Gardener prepares the soil.

Offers water.

Makes room for light.

Tends what is emerging.

And trusts the wisdom already living within the seed.

Attunement and Leadership

This insight has also given me new language for the work I am building through Culture Shift(Hers).

Soft Power has never been about being agreeable.

It is the patient work of cultivating the relational conditions that help people flourish.

It is the practice of weaving trust, dignity, courage, accountability, and belonging into the fabric of our relationships, organizations, and communities.

Because the cultures we create externally are always shaped by the attention we cultivate internally.

A leader who has not attuned may enter a room carrying unexamined fear, resentment, defensiveness, or urgency—and unknowingly distribute it throughout the organization.

A leader who pauses to attune will not make every decision perfectly.

But they may become more capable of noticing what is moving within them before asking everyone else to carry it.

Leadership, then, is not simply about directing the music.

It is about helping ourselves—and one another—tune before the first note is played.

Love is not sustained by good intentions alone.

It is sustained by rhythms.

By attention.

By hospitality.

By practices that continually reorient us toward what matters most.

Perhaps that is the deepest work of leadership.

Not becoming louder.

Not becoming more impressive.

But becoming more deeply attuned.

So I’ll leave you with two questions I’m carrying into this week:

If your leadership were a home, what would it feel like to walk through the front door?

And perhaps even deeper:

What practices help you remember who you are before the noise?

Yesterday, I didn’t need another productivity hack.

I didn’t need another affirmation.

I didn’t need someone to tell me to “think positive.”

If I’m honest…

I needed to attune.

Yesterday was emotionally heavy. Grief, caregiving, finances, uncertainty—everything seemed to arrive at once. Somewhere in the middle of it all, I realized I wasn’t looking for a solution as much as I was looking for somewhere to rest my soul.

That realization has stayed with me.

For years, I’ve thought about abiding as a theological idea.

This week, I’m beginning to understand that abiding is a practice.

Not simply believing that God is present.

Learning how to remain there.

To dwell.

To stay.

To return, again and again, when fear, hurry, scarcity, or disappointment tempt us to leave that place.

For me, that place is God.

Sometimes I call God Love Almighty.

Sometimes the Divine Gardener.

Sometimes the Gentle Gardener, tending what is growing in me with more patience than I often extend to myself.

Those are the names that help me remember.

You may use different language.

You may pray differently than I do.

You may not pray at all.

You may find yourself rooted in Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, an African Traditional Religion, a Goddess tradition, a metaphysical path, or no formal tradition at all.

My invitation isn’t that you borrow my language.

It’s that you become more deeply acquainted with your own.

I wonder if you know what it feels like to encounter that quiet place within yourself where fear loosens its grip, compassion grows, and love becomes possible again.

That is the invitation I’m trying to describe.

Yesterday, my practice of abiding wasn’t a perfectly written prayer.

It wasn’t checking off a spiritual discipline.

It was music.

It was poetry.

It was silence.

It was allowing myself to be held instead of trying to hold everything together.

One song that has accompanied me for years is Chaka Khan’s beautiful rendition of Richard Smallwood’s “The Holy Tabernacle.”

The tabernacle wasn’t simply a place people visited.

It was a place where God’s presence dwelled.

Perhaps abiding is learning that we don’t simply visit the Sacred from time to time.

Perhaps we learn to make our home there.

Whatever language you use for the Source of Life…

God.

Love.

The Sacred.

Spirit.

The Divine.

Creator.

Or simply the quiet wisdom that continually calls you back to your truest self…

My hope is the same.

That you find practices that help you return.

Practices that help you remember.

Because that’s the work I’m increasingly convinced I’ve been called to do.

Not to convince people to believe exactly as I believe.

But to create the conditions where people can remember who they are, deepen their relationship with what they hold sacred, and live in right relationship with themselves, with one another, and with the work they have been entrusted to do.

Maybe that’s what abiding has always been.

Not escaping the world.

But learning to remain rooted in Love while living fully within it.

Today, I’m less interested in asking whether I completed the right spiritual practice.

I’m more interested in asking whether I remained.

The Hospitality of the Heart

Before We Begin…

There is a moment that happens almost every day.

You unlock the door.

Step inside.

Set your keys down.

Perhaps you kick off your shoes, glance at the dishes in the sink, answer one last email, or begin thinking about tomorrow before today has even ended.

You have arrived home.

Or have you?

I’ve been wondering lately whether coming home and being at home are two very different things.

Many of us know how to welcome other people.

We fluff the pillows.

Prepare a meal.

Light a candle.

Ask if they’re comfortable.

Offer them something to drink.

We instinctively create spaces where others can exhale.

But somewhere along the way, many of us forgot how to offer that same welcome to ourselves.

We move through our own lives like hurried visitors.

We rush from one responsibility to the next.

We apologize for resting.

We criticize ourselves before we’ve even had a chance to breathe.

And I wonder…

What if hospitality isn’t simply something we extend to other people?

What if it is a way of meeting ourselves?

A Thread Worth Following

Across cultures, hospitality has long been considered sacred.

In ancient Greece, there was the practice of xenia—the sacred duty of welcoming the stranger. Protected by Zeus Xenios, hospitality was more than etiquette. A traveler was welcomed before being questioned because no one could know whether the stranger standing at the door might, in fact, be carrying something divine.

The Hebrew Scriptures tell a similar story.

Abraham welcomes three strangers beneath the oaks of Mamre, only to discover that the encounter is far more sacred than he first imagined.

The writer of Hebrews later echoes this wisdom:

“Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing so some have entertained angels without knowing it.”

Across Buddhist traditions, stories often remind us that awakening rarely arrives wearing obvious clothes. Sometimes the teacher appears as an ordinary traveler. Sometimes wisdom arrives through the person we least expect. The invitation is to cultivate a heart spacious enough to receive what we cannot yet recognize.

Different traditions.

Different languages.

The same quiet invitation.

Treat every encounter with reverence.

But this week, I’d like to ask a different question.

If we have learned to welcome the stranger…

Can we learn to welcome ourselves?

Your Noticing

As you move through this week, notice…

• How do you greet yourself when you walk through your front door?

• What is the first thing you say to yourself after making a mistake?

• When do you feel most at home within yourself?

• If your heart were a home, what kind of guest would you be?

There are no perfect answers.

Only invitations.

An Invitation

Perhaps hospitality begins long before anyone knocks on the door.

Perhaps it begins in the quiet ways we speak to ourselves.

In the rituals that help us arrive instead of merely survive.

In the courage to believe that we, too, are worthy of tenderness.

There is a question that has quietly shaped my work for years.

What if networking isn’t broken?

What if it’s simply built on the wrong operating system?

Too often, we’re taught to enter a room asking:

Who can help me?

Who should I know?

How do I make the right impression?

We perfect our elevator pitches.

We exchange business cards.

We collect LinkedIn connections.

And then we leave with a list of names—but very few relationships.

Somewhere along the way, we began treating people like opportunities instead of human beings.

I don’t believe that’s how community is built.

I believe community begins with something much older.

Much quieter.

Much more sacred.

It begins with love.

Not love as sentiment.

Not love as performance.

Love as an operating system.

Love that listens before it speaks.

Love that is curious before it is certain.

Love that believes every person carries a story worth honoring.

Once I understood that, everything about my work began to make sense.

My Work Didn’t Begin in a Boardroom

It began around tables.

In kitchens.

At church fellowship halls.

At family reunions.

Watching the women in my family practice a kind of leadership that rarely appeared in leadership books.

They didn’t “facilitate experiences.”

They hosted people.

They tended to people.

They noticed who hadn’t eaten.

Who was sitting alone.

Who needed encouragement.

Who needed another chair pulled up to the table.

Hospitality wasn’t entertainment.

It was ministry.

It was stewardship.

It was love made visible.

Looking back, I realize I inherited more than recipes.

I inherited a way of building community.

From Networking to Un-Networking™

Years later, I found myself attending networking events.

People were kind.

Professional.

Ambitious.

But something felt missing.

Everyone was talking.

Very few people were listening.

Everyone was introducing themselves.

Few were revealing themselves.

I realized we had become incredibly good at exchanging information.

But we had forgotten how to encounter one another.

That realization became Un-Networking™.

Not because networking is wrong.

But because relationship deserves something deeper.

We Gather. We Tell Stories. We Reveal.

Every Un-Networking™ experience is designed around a simple conviction:

People don’t build trust through proximity.

They build trust through shared stories.

Conversation is infrastructure.

Belonging is strategy.

Hospitality is leadership.

When we create the conditions for people to reveal more of who they are, collaboration follows naturally.

Not because anyone forced it.

Because trust made it possible.

Love Creates Capacity

One of the greatest misunderstandings about love is that it’s soft.

In my experience, love asks more of us than almost anything else.

Love requires attention.

Discernment.

Boundaries.

Accountability.

Generosity.

Imagination.

Love doesn’t lower standards.

It changes the reason we uphold them.

Love creates the conditions where people remember who they are.

Reveal who they’re becoming.

Renew their sense of purpose.

Radiate that transformation into their families, organizations, and communities.

This Is the Work

This is why Culture Shift(Hers) Unite™ exists.

Not simply to host events.

Not simply to facilitate conversations.

But to cultivate cultures where people can become more fully themselves.

Whether we’re gathered in a boardroom, a library, a conference ballroom, a sanctuary, or around a beautifully prepared meal…

The invitation is always the same.

Because I have come to believe something simple and profound.

The future won’t be transformed by better networking.

It will be transformed by better relationships.

And every meaningful relationship begins the same way.

Root Before You Reach

Greetings, Culture Keeps,

As I prepared this week’s reflection, I found myself returning to an image from the natural world.

Before a flower reaches toward the sun, it first reaches into the earth.

It roots.

That quiet truth has become a gentle invitation for me.

In a season that often asks us to do more, produce more, and prove more, I’ve been wondering what it might mean to root before reaching.

To trust that what is unseen is not insignificant.

To remember that some of the most important work in our lives happens beneath the surface.

As we continue through The Power of Radiance, I’m discovering that radiance doesn’t begin with visibility.

It begins with belonging.

With remembrance.

With the quiet courage to receive what has always been offered.

Perhaps this week’s invitation isn’t to strive for more light.

Perhaps it’s to deepen our roots.

Because everything visible is sustained by what grows quietly beneath the surface.

Rest could feel undeserved.

Even kindness could make us uncomfortable.

But what if receiving isn’t weakness?

What if it’s one of the ways love continues to move through a community?

This week, I found myself thinking about roots.

No one applauds a tree for growing roots.

We celebrate blossoms.

Fruit.

Shade.

But everything visible depends upon what grows quietly beneath the surface.

Receiving may be one of those roots.

Invisible.

Essential.

Preparing us for what comes next.

🌍 Cultural Ledger — Love in Motion

This week, love met me in a hospital room.

Over the Fourth of July weekend, my first Spanish teacher—mi primera maestra—suffered a stroke. She has been drifting in and out of consciousness and, for now, has become nonverbal.

When I visited, I instinctively reached for what she first gave me years ago: language.

I began reading Llanto por Ignacio Sánchez Mejías aloud in Spanish.

I don’t know how much she understood.

I don’t know exactly what part of the brain was listening.

But something shifted.

Her family has also been surrounding her with music—Edwin Starr, Cat Stevens, Carole King, and Joni Mitchell—the soundtrack of a life well lived.

It reminded me that culture is never merely entertainment.

Poetry.

Music.

Language.

Memory.

Love.

These are not separate things.

They are all ways human beings remember themselves.

Watching her, I found myself wondering if healing sometimes begins long before words return.

Perhaps love reaches places medicine cannot.

Perhaps music remembers us when we cannot remember ourselves.

Perhaps language continues speaking even when our mouths no longer can.

This week, my Cultural Ledger isn’t about what’s happening in the world.

It’s about what the world is teaching me.

That culture moves.

Love moves.

And somewhere beneath both is the quiet work of remembrance.

🤝 The Weekly Practice

This week, practice receiving without immediately reciprocating.

Accept a compliment.

Allow someone to help.

Say, “Thank you,” instead of, “You didn’t have to.”

Notice what feelings arise.

Then ask yourself:

What story am I practicing instead?

Again and again, Jesus received hospitality, friendship, care, and compassion. His ministry reminds us that receiving is not passivity—it is trust. It is an openness to relationship, grace, and the movement of love through community.

Barbara Holmes

Barbara Holmes teaches that contemplation is not an escape from the world but a way of becoming more fully present within it. Her work invites us to see receptivity as a sacred practice that deepens our relationships with God, ourselves, and one another.

Together, they remind us that receiving is not the opposite of leadership.

It is one of the ways love sustains it.

Most of us have been taught how to give.

We show up.

We work hard.

We care for others.

We solve problems.

We become the dependable one.

But somewhere along the way, many of us also learned that receiving is something different.

Receiving feels uncomfortable.

Help can feel like failure.

Compliments are quickly dismissed.

Rest begins to feel like something we have to earn.

This week, I’d like to invite us into a different question.

What if receiving isn’t weakness?

What if it’s one of the ways love continues to move through a community?

Perhaps generosity was never meant to flow in only one direction.

Perhaps we were created to both give and receive.

Not because we’ve earned it.

Simply because we belong to one another.

• When someone offers kindness, how do you respond?

• What do you find easiest to receive?

• What feels surprisingly difficult?

• What story might be shaping that response?

There is no right answer.

Only curiosity.

There are seasons when we mistake endurance for strength.

When carrying becomes so familiar that we no longer recognize it as weight.

This week’s Field Note began with a practical problem.

It became an invitation to question one of the deepest myths shaping modern life.

Perhaps you’ll recognize yourself here, too.

The Myth of Autonomy

I had a problem.

Like many of us, my first instinct was to solve it.

Think harder.

Research more.

Pray longer.

Carry a little more.

Somewhere along the way, many of us absorbed the idea that strength means autonomy—that healing is something we accomplish alone, that grief is something we quietly survive, and that leadership means carrying the weight without asking for help.

Black women know this story especially well.

We have inherited the expectation that we will be resilient, resourceful, dependable, and endlessly capable.

We solve problems.

We stretch budgets.

We care for children, parents, neighborhoods, congregations, organizations, and movements.

We become experts at carrying.

Sometimes we carry so well that even we forget the weight.

But if I’m honest…

I don’t think autonomy has ever really been our story.

Not as Black women.

Not as human beings.

Our ancestors survived because they refused isolation.

They built kinship where none existed.

They gathered in hush harbors.

They organized mutual aid before it had a name.

They leaned on church mothers, neighbors, cousins, aunties, freedom songs, kitchen tables, and whispered prayers.

They understood something our culture often forgets:

We become through relationship.

That realization has been quietly reshaping the way I understand leadership, community, and even my own work.

I’ve begun to wonder whether our deepest transformation happens not when we become more self-sufficient, but when we remember we were never meant to journey alone.
