A grown man named Scott, mid-life, full sentences, presumably employed, took time out of his day to write me a multi-paragraph message about how disgusted he was that this sticker exists.

Not about tariffs. Not about grocery prices. Not about a single policy decision that’s made his life more expensive over the last eighteen months.

About a sticker.

He wanted me to know it was crude. Divisive. Beneath the level of discourse this country deserves. He wanted me to know he was deeply disappointed.

And look I read the whole thing. Twice. Because there is something genuinely remarkable about a person whose political outrage has been fully redirected onto a four-inch piece of vinyl.

The country’s affordability situation is what it is. The trade file is what it is. But the sticker? The sticker is where the line gets drawn.

Thanks for the free marketing, my guy. Sincerely.

Why This Thing Actually Sold

Here’s what the offended-DM crowd never gets, and it’s the whole reason I keep making this stuff.

People aren’t buying a sticker. They’re buying a small, cheap, extremely visible way to say I am not okay with how this is going and to say it without writing a letter nobody reads, or attending a consultation nobody acts on, or voting in an election that’s still a long way off.

Political merch is a pressure gauge. When people are broadly content, nobody buys an angry sticker. Nobody puts a profane opinion on their truck when the mortgage is manageable and the job feels secure and the future looks roughly like the past.

Two hundred of these moved because a lot of people out there are not feeling any of that. The sticker is a symptom. Getting mad at the sticker is like yelling at a thermometer.

The Tone Police Have a Bad Record

Every couple of years the same argument comes back around: this is unbecoming, this coarsens the debate, we should be better than this.

I’d take that argument more seriously if it were ever applied evenly.

Nobody wrote me a disappointed essay about the last decade of merch aimed at politicians on the other side of the aisle. Nobody clutched anything when it was a Conservative name in the crosshairs. The rule seems to be that profanity is a threat to democracy specifically when it’s pointed at the person you voted for.

That’s not a standard. That’s a preference wearing a standard’s jacket.

Meanwhile: irreverent political speech is one of the oldest traditions in this country and every other free one. It has always been rude. It has always made someone’s uncle furious. That’s the job.

Three Left

So here we are. 197 gone, 3 remaining, and one very disappointed man who inadvertently made the case better than I could have.

It’s a better piece of political communication than anything the other side has produced in two years.

Compare that to #ElbowsUp, which had a comedian, a national broadcaster, a Prime Minister, and roughly every retailer in the country behind it. And went exactly nowhere.

Where “Elbows Up” actually came from

Give credit where it’s due on the origin story. The phrase belongs to Gordie Howe, “Mr. Elbows,” a Saskatchewan kid who played the game harder than anyone alive and never once needed a T-shirt to prove it.

Then Mike Myers wore a “Canada is not for sale” shirt on SNL on March 1st, 2025, tapped his elbow twice, and the thing detonated. Manitoba’s Wab Kinew had already used the line weeks earlier. Trudeau closed out his farewell with it. Carney picked it up and rode it through an entire federal campaign, with Myers himself cutting an ad for him.

Within weeks it was on hats, bumper stickers, chocolate bars, and every Instagram bio from Victoria to Cape Spear.

And here’s the part nobody in the Liberal orbit wants to sit with: by May, the merch was already dying. CBC reported ahead of Canada Day 2025 that vendors who’d shipped “elbows up” gear worldwide were watching sales slide back to the same numbers as their regular red-and-white stock. The slogan didn’t get retired. It got downgraded to generic patriotism, which is the political equivalent of a band’s third album going to the bargain bin.

Why it collapsed

Because it was never a position. It was a posture.

“Elbows up” made a promise: we’re going to take a hit and give one back. That’s the whole meaning of the phrase in hockey. You don’t put your elbows up to negotiate.

So what happened when the actual test came? Ottawa dropped the digital services tax on American tech giants. The White House said out loud that Carney caved. Whether you love that framing or hate it, the optics were exactly what the slogan promised wouldn’t happen.

And the tariffs? Still here. Still hammering softwood, still hammering steel and aluminum, still hammering the exact communities that were told to buy the shirt and feel strong. Nova Scotia mills and Alberta producers didn’t get a trade win. They got a hashtag and a chocolate bar with a maple leaf on it.

Then there was Myers himself, the guy who lit the fuse, living and paying his taxes in the United States. Nobody’s obligated to move home to have an opinion. But when your national resistance movement is fronted by a man in California wearing a shirt he bought off Amazon, you’ve told on yourself. And when it’s the merchandise doing the fighting, you’re not fighting.

What the hoodie actually communicates

“0% Liberal” isn’t clever. It isn’t warm. It doesn’t reference a hockey legend or borrow a nation’s flag to sell fleece.

It’s a statement of account. It says: I’ve looked at the record and I’m out.

That’s a fundamentally different kind of message than “elbows up.” One is an invitation to feel something. The other is a declaration of where you’ve landed after paying attention. One is available in six colours at a checkout counter near a display of Canadian flags. The other you have to actually mean, because you’re going to wear it into a Tim’s in a riding that went red and eat the looks.

And notice what nobody does with a “0% Liberal” hoodie: nobody argues that wearing it is a policy. Nobody claims it defends the border, protects an industry, or wins a negotiation. It’s a marker, not a movement. That honesty is precisely what the elbows-up crowd never managed, because they needed the merch to be the substance. When the substance never showed up, the merch was all that was left, and then even that stopped selling.

The actual lesson

Slogans that describe a feeling have a shelf life of about ten weeks. Slogans that describe a decision last until the decision changes.

Anyone in politics or branding should staple that to the wall. “Elbows up” got the whole country to feel unified for one spring, and by summer it couldn’t move inventory. That’s not because Canadians stopped being patriotic. It’s because people can tell the difference between being defended and being marketed to, and it doesn’t take them very long.

The Liberals are still running on the feeling. They’re going to keep running on it, because the record isn’t going to carry them. Growth, productivity, cost of living, housing, the trade file none of that gets better with a rally cry.

Meanwhile some guy in a hoodie has summed up his entire assessment of the last decade in eight characters and a percent sign.

Elbows up. Sales down.

You’ve probably seen the woman in it, or at least seen the nickname the internet stuck her with a while back. The pancake one. She turned up at an Alberta independence rally in Edmonton today, camera rolling, doing the thing she does.

The message that came with the video said: react to this.

No.

I’m not going to react to it. I’m not going to clip it, quote it, stitch it, dunk on it, or write eight hundred words taking apart her argument like it was ever meant to be an argument. And I’d encourage you not to either.

Here’s why.

She didn’t show up for the rally. She showed up for you.

There is a difference between a protester and a performer.

A protester shows up because they want to change what happens in the room. They bring a sign, they bring numbers, they bring an argument. Sometimes they’re right, sometimes they’re wrong, but the point of the exercise is the issue.

A performer shows up because they want footage. The room is a backdrop. The people in it are props. The confrontation isn’t a side effect of the protest, it is the protest, because the confrontation is the content. Nothing that happened in Edmonton today was aimed at anyone who was actually standing there. It was aimed at a phone.

And a phone only pays out if we all show up to watch.

The outrage is the business model

I’ve worked in this industry long enough to tell you exactly how this works, and it isn’t complicated.

Engagement is engagement. The algorithm does not have a moral opinion about your comment. It cannot tell the difference between “this is brilliant” and “this is the dumbest thing I have ever seen in my life.” It counts both. Then it counts the share, and the share counts double, and the quote-post with your withering takedown counts more than that, because now you’ve brought your whole audience with you.

Every person who screenshots her to mock her is doing unpaid distribution work.

Every “can you believe this” repost is a media buy she didn’t have to pay for.

Every furious three-paragraph comment is a signal to the platform that this clip is worth pushing to ten thousand more people.

You think you’re humiliating her. You’re promoting her. Those are the same button.

She knows that. That’s the whole play. Get yelled at by as many people as possible, convert the yelling into reach, convert the reach into relevance, and do it again next weekend at whatever event has a crowd and a camera.

The only thing that actually costs her anything is silence.

And while we’re here: the word

I’ll say this part once, because it’s worth saying.

You cannot call everyone you disagree with a fascist and expect the word to keep working. It’s not a magic spell. It describes something specific and genuinely horrific, and there are people alive in this country whose families were destroyed by the real thing.

When it gets thrown at a rally, a pancake breakfast, a truck, a hockey game, a school board meeting, a guy in a hat it stops meaning anything at all. It becomes noise. And the day it’s actually needed, nobody will hear it, because we spent a decade using it as a synonym for “I don’t like you.”

That’s not a small thing. Cheapening the word doesn’t hurt the people it gets thrown at. It hurts everyone who might need it to mean something later.

What actually got buried today

There was a rally in Edmonton today about Alberta’s place in Canada. Whatever you think of that question and it is a serious question, with serious people on both sides of it there were Albertans there trying to have it.

Guess what nobody is talking about tonight.

That’s the other cost of feeding this stuff. It isn’t just that it makes one person briefly famous. It’s that a manufactured sideshow eats the coverage, the conversation, and the news cycle, and the actual issue gets nothing. Every minute we spend on her is a minute not spent on the thing hundreds of people showed up to talk about.

That’s a win for her. It is not a win for you.

So here’s the ask

If the clip crosses your feed: keep scrolling. Don’t comment. Don’t share it “so people can see how ridiculous this is.” People have seen. Ridiculousness is the product.

Don’t tag her. Don’t send it to the group chat. Don’t reply to the guy who posted it.

Let it die of natural causes.

Attention is the only currency in this economy, and you are the one holding the wallet. She cannot make herself famous. Only we can do that, and we do it constantly, usually while telling ourselves we’re doing the opposite.

Share this message. Not her video.

On August 27, 2026, the President of the United States signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America,” and said it takes effect immediately. He held up the boards. He posted the map with the old name crossed out in gold. He said, roughly, that now that America has a gulf and a lake, all it needs is an ocean.

Ottawa responded within the hour. The Prime Minister posted that the name comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, that it is more than four centuries old, and that it predates both Confederation and the American Declaration of Independence. The Industry Minister told reporters Canada will call it Lake Ontario, period.

And then roughly nine million Canadians spent the next 72 hours arguing about a hydronym.

I want to be precise about my position here, because it gets misread every time: I am not saying the name doesn’t matter. I’m saying it doesn’t matter to your life, and the people who run our politics know that, and that is exactly why the fight is so loud.

Here is the test I apply to every story that shows up in my feed with a siren emoji on it:

Does the outcome of this argument change the price of anything, the availability of anything, or the safety of anywhere?

Lake America fails that test completely. The lake does not care what it is called. The water does not get more expensive. The freighters do not stop. The U.S. federal government can standardize whatever terminology it wants for its own maps and contracts, and Canada maintains its own naming system regardless. Nothing moves. Nobody’s mortgage changes.

But it feels enormous. And in 2026, feeling enormous is worth more than being important.

Why the outrage of the day is a product, not an event

I’ve spent my career in message strategy, and I’ll tell you the ugly part plainly: an outrage cycle is one of the cheapest political goods on the market.

A symbolic fight has four properties that policy fights never have.

It costs nothing to produce. A rename is a signature and a graphic. A housing plan is a decade, a fight with three levels of government, and a hundred stories about what went wrong.

Everyone already knows their line. No study required, no trade-offs, no numbers. You know within half a second whether you’re offended, and by whom.

It’s perfectly safe for every politician involved. This is the key one. Defending the name of a lake is the lowest-risk patriotism available in Canadian public life. It costs a government nothing, it can’t fail, and it photographs beautifully. You will never be held accountable in four years for how the lake-naming file went.

And it crowds out the thing behind it. That’s the payoff.

Both capitals get something out of this. Washington gets a free news cycle and a poke at an ally. Ottawa gets to look like it’s standing up to Washington without having to explain anything harder. The only people who get nothing are the ones who were hoping this week would produce a functioning trade relationship.

That’s not a conspiracy. It’s just incentives. Symbolism is the highest-margin product in politics, and everybody in the building sells it.

The scoreboard that actually matters

While the map was being redrawn, here’s what was happening to the actual country.

Inflation is back above target. After cooling to the 1.5–1.6% range early in 2026, the all-items CPI came in at 3.0% year over year in July the first move back above the Bank of Canada’s 2% target since the 2022–23 surge. And it is not broad-based the way 2022 was. It’s concentrated in energy and transportation, which is the tariff pass-through everyone warned about, arriving on schedule.

The labour market improved, and is still not good. July’s Labour Force Survey added about 75,000 jobs and pulled unemployment down to 6.4%, a two-year low and a third straight monthly improvement. I’ll give credit where it’s earned that’s a real number and a real recovery. But 6.4% is still an economy carrying slack, and the picture for young Canadians is worse than the headline. Returning students aged 15 to 24 sat at 15.1% unemployment in July. Among Black youth, the rate was 22.6%.

Food bank demand never went back down. The last full HungerCount put visits at over two million in a single month, up roughly 90% from 2019, with a third of clients being children and nearly one in five being employed. That last number is the one that should end careers. A working parent in a food bank line is a policy failure with a face.

Nobody signed an executive order about any of that. Nobody held up a board in an office.

The file that actually matters: trade

And here is what makes the lake story genuinely infuriating rather than merely stupid. It happened five days after the thing it was designed to bury.

Talks between Ottawa and Washington collapsed late on Friday, August 21, hours before the deadline. At midnight, 50% U.S. tariffs took effect on roughly $20 billion worth of Canadian goods dairy, alcohol, cement, building materials, certain clothing, hockey equipment. The Prime Minister said Canada would match them dollar for dollar, and announced retaliatory tariffs beginning September 8 targeting American steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. He called the U.S. move a miscalculation and said his negotiators walked because Washington’s late demands would destroy Canadian auto, steel, and aluminum. He also said Canada is at war, because it was attacked.

The U.S. Trade Representative’s version is that Canada declined to finalize a deal it had already agreed to, that Washington had offered Canada the best treatment of any major exporter, and that there are no new talks scheduled.

Take whichever version you find credible. I don’t much care which one you pick, because the outcome is identical either way: there is no deal, there are no talks scheduled, and Canadians are about to pay a 50% tax at the border in both directions.

That’s the story. That is the entire story. Everything else this week was set dressing.

Ask yourself which of these two questions got more airtime in your feed:

• Should Lake Ontario be called Lake America?

• What is Canada’s plan for the second week of September, when both tariff walls are up and there is nobody at the table?

If the answer is the first one, the distraction worked. On you, on me, on all of us.

Being loud is not the same as being ready

I’ll say the part conservatives are supposed to say, and then the part we’re not.

The part we’re supposed to say: rhetoric is not a trade strategy. “Elbows up,” “we’re at war,” “we’ll never call it that” none of it lowers a tariff by a single point. Dollar-for-dollar retaliation on appliances and agricultural equipment is a tax on Canadian farmers and Canadian homebuyers, paid at the till in Moncton and Medicine Hat, and calling it patriotism doesn’t change who writes the cheque. A government that spent a year telling us it had the best negotiator in the Western world does not get to arrive in September with no deal, no talks, and a slogan.

The part we’re not supposed to say: the outrage economy is bipartisan, and our own side runs it too. Every time a conservative account spends a day on a flag, a pronoun, or a lake instead of on the four files below, we are doing the exact same job as the people we’re criticizing. We’re just doing it for a different audience. If it’s a distraction when they do it, it’s a distraction when we do it.

What “focusing on what matters” actually looks like

Slogans are easy. Here’s the short list I’d hand a first minister who was serious, in order of how fast it shows up in a household budget.

1. Tear down our own trade barriers first. We are getting a lesson in what it costs to depend on one buyer. The cheapest available response is the one entirely within our control: internal free trade. Mutual recognition of credentials and standards across provinces, opened procurement, and an end to the alcohol and trucking rules that make it easier to sell into Ohio than into Manitoba. It requires no American signature and no new spending. It has been recommended by every serious economist in this country for thirty years and it still isn’t done.

2. Build the export infrastructure we keep promising. If one customer can hold 50% over your head, get a second customer. That means pipelines, ports, LNG, rail, and transmission, and it means permitting timelines measured in months instead of decades. You cannot diversify your exports with a communications strategy.

3. Stop taxing the thing you say you want more of. You will not build homes, plants, or mines in a country that penalizes the capital that builds them. Rate structure, capital cost allowances, and the compliance load on small business are the levers here, and they are boring, and boring is the point.

4. Fix housing supply on the municipal side, where it’s actually broken. Not another federal fund with a ribbon on it. Zoning, approval times, development charges, and trades capacity. Those are city and provincial files. Ottawa’s job is to stop pretending otherwise and to make the money it does send conditional on units actually going up.

None of these produce a viral clip. All four of them are worth more than every symbolic fight of the last twelve months combined.

The filter

You don’t need a media diet. You need a filter. Here’s mine, and you’re welcome to it.

When a story shows up hot, ask: who benefits from me spending my afternoon on this?

If the answer is “a politician who would rather not talk about the trade file,” you have your answer. Close the tab. Go read the tariff schedule. Find out what’s on the September 8 list and whether your business is on it. Call your MP and ask a question they can’t answer with a flag emoji.

Lake Ontario has been Lake Ontario for four hundred years. It will still be Lake Ontario when this is over, whatever any federal register says, and not one Canadian’s life will have improved because we all agreed loudly about it.

The groceries, the mortgage, the missing paycheque, the empty table at the food bank those are still here on Monday.

Focus on what actually matters.

Two hundred and fifty thousand.

Say it out loud. That’s more people than live in Regina. More than the population of Saskatoon. If everyone following this platform stood shoulder to shoulder, you’d fill Commonwealth Stadium four times over and still have thousands waiting outside.

And it started with one Alberta dad, a phone, and the growing feeling that nobody in a position of influence was saying the things ordinary people were saying at their own kitchen tables.

That’s it. No newsroom. No broadcast licence. No government funding envelope. No editorial board deciding which stories were safe enough to run.

Just a guy who decided he was done staying quiet and 250,000 Canadians who turned out to feel exactly the same way.

This Number Is Not a Vanity Metric

Let’s be honest about what follower counts usually mean. Most of the time, they mean very little. Numbers can be bought. Engagement can be faked. There are accounts with a million followers who couldn’t get twelve people to show up to a barbecue.

That is not what happened here.

This community was built one comment at a time. One share at a time. One person sending a video to their brother-in-law with the message “this is exactly what I’ve been trying to say.”

That’s the difference between an audience and a movement. An audience watches. A movement carries the message forward on its own.

And that’s why this number matters. It isn’t proof that a channel got popular. It’s proof that a huge number of Canadians have been thinking the same things, feeling the same frustrations, and waiting for somebody to say it plainly.

The Silent Majority Was Never Silent. It Was Unpublished.

There’s a phrase that gets thrown around a lot: the silent majority. It has always been slightly wrong.

The majority was never silent. Working Canadians have been talking about this stuff forever in trucks, in shops, in arenas, at family dinners, in the comment sections of every article about their own communities. They talked about the cost of living long before it was a headline. They talked about energy policy while being told they didn’t understand it. They talked about accountability in government while being told to be patient.

The majority wasn’t silent. It just didn’t have a microphone.

That’s the shift. The gatekeeping function that used to decide which opinions counted as legitimate has been steadily losing its grip, and platforms like this one exist in the space that opened up.

Two hundred and fifty thousand people is what it looks like when the microphone finally gets handed to the other side of the room.

Why Independent Media Is Exploding in Canada

None of this is happening in a vacuum. Independent Canadian media, Substacks, podcasts, creator-run news accounts, commentary platforms is growing at a rate that would have seemed impossible ten years ago. There are a few reasons for that, and they’re worth naming.

Trust in traditional institutions has eroded

Canadians have watched the same story get covered three different ways depending on who’s paying for the coverage. They’ve noticed which questions get asked and which ones get skipped. Once you notice that pattern, you can’t un-notice it. People didn’t leave legacy media because they got bored. They left because they stopped believing they were getting the full picture.

The barrier to entry collapsed

You no longer need a printing press, a transmitter, or a job at a national outlet. You need a phone and something worth saying. That’s a genuinely historic change in how information moves, and Canada is only starting to feel the full effect of it.

Local coverage disappeared and never came back

Regional newsrooms have been gutted for two decades. Whole communities in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Atlantic Canada and rural Ontario simply don’t have anyone covering their municipal councils, their resource projects, or their local decisions anymore. Independent creators moved into that vacuum because someone had to.

Ordinary people want to hear from ordinary people

There’s a credibility that comes from someone who works for a living, raises kids, pays a mortgage and reads the same news you do. That’s not a media strategy. It’s just what happens when the person talking actually lives in the same country as the people listening.

What “We Are the Media Now” Actually Means

That line gets used a lot, and it deserves more than a slogan’s worth of thought.

It does not mean independent creators have replaced professional journalism. It means the monopoly on distribution is over. It means a story can now break, spread and reach a quarter million people without ever passing through an editorial approval process.

It means when something happens in Alberta a resource project, a policy change, a decision made in a room most people will never enter the people affected by it can now describe it themselves, in their own words, without waiting for permission.

It means accountability runs in both directions. When we get something wrong, 250,000 people tell us immediately. That’s a tougher correction process than most newsrooms have.

And it means the responsibility is real. A quarter million people is not a comment section. It’s a constituency. Getting it right matters more now than it did at 2,000 followers, and that’s a standard this platform intends to hold itself to.

What We’ve Built Together

Think about what this community has already pushed into the national conversation. Resource development and what it actually means for the families who depend on it. Energy policy written by people who have never set foot on a site. Education decisions made without consulting the parents living with the consequences. Interprovincial trade barriers that make it easier to buy from another country than another province. Government accountability that only seems to arrive after the cameras do.

Those aren’t fringe issues. They’re the issues, and they got traction because a quarter million people refused to let them get buried.

Every one of those conversations reached further than it would have because someone in this community hit share.

Thank You And I Mean That

I want to be direct here, because it matters.

You built this.

Not an algorithm. Not a marketing budget. Not a media buy. You. The people who commented when a post had eleven views. The people who defended this platform in threads where it would have been easier to scroll past. The people who sent videos to their families. The people who showed up.

Every single one of the 250,000 is a person who decided this was worth their attention, and there is no way to overstate what that means.

We’re Just Getting Started

Here’s what I can promise going forward.

We’re getting louder, not softer. Growth doesn’t mean sanding down the edges to keep everyone comfortable. The reason this reached a quarter million people is that it said the thing plainly. That doesn’t change.

We’re going deeper. More long-form. More original reporting. More going directly to the source instead of reacting to someone else’s coverage. Reaching people is step one. Informing them properly is step two.

We’re going in person. Online reach means nothing if it doesn’t translate into real rooms with real people. That work continues, and there’s more of it coming this fall.

We’re staying independent. No editorial board. No funding strings. The only people this platform answers to are the ones reading it.

Eighteen months later, here is where that promise stands.

At 12:01 a.m. Eastern on Saturday, August 22, the United States imposed 50 per cent tariffs on roughly $28 billion worth of Canadian goods. Not steel. Not aluminum. Not the strategic sectors everyone had been arguing about for a year and a half. Hockey equipment. Cement. Beer. Clothing. Furniture. Lumber, plywood and doors. Flowers and seeds. Fishing rods.

The tariffs apply even to goods that comply with CUSMA the free trade agreement Canada signed, ratified, and has spent eighteen months insisting still means something. They carry no expiry date.

And on September 8, Canada will match them dollar for dollar, which is a polite way of saying that Ottawa is about to add its own tax to the price of American steel, appliances, agricultural equipment, electronics and paper crossing the border into this country.

The Prime Minister said the quiet part out loud himself. He acknowledged that Canada takes this step reluctantly, because some of these measures will raise costs and reduce choice for Canadians.

That is not an opposition talking point. That is the Prime Minister of Canada, standing at a podium in Ottawa, telling you your groceries and your renovation are about to get more expensive.

The seventy-two hours that tell you everything

Here is the sequence. Read it slowly, because it is the whole story.

Tuesday, August 18. President Trump pauses the tariff deadline for three days and posts publicly that the two sides “have a DEAL!”

Wednesday, August 19. Negotiators on both sides tell reporters they are working on final text. Prime Minister Carney holds a news conference claiming Canada has secured the best terms of any country, and asks premiers to put American liquor back on provincial shelves as a goodwill gesture. The same day, he chairs a First Ministers’ Meeting and tells premiers the government is working to finalise a deal.

Friday, August 21, late evening. Talks collapse. Carney announces he is suspending negotiations and recalling Canada’s negotiators to Ottawa.

Saturday, August 22, 12:01 a.m. The tariffs take effect.

Seventy-two hours from “best terms in the world” to a full breakdown and a 50 per cent wall. Provinces had already begun restocking American product on the goodwill of an agreement that did not exist.

Whatever you think of the Americans’ conduct and reasonable people can think very little of it a government that was three days away from signing did not know what it was three days away from signing. That is not a triumph of preparation. That is a negotiating team that misread the table it was sitting at, in public, with the premiers watching.

“Elbows up” met the wall

The Prime Minister’s explanation is that the Americans made late demands touching on culture, autos and sovereignty, and that Canada would not accept a bad deal at any price.

Fine. Take him entirely at his word. Accept that walking away was correct on the merits.

The question conservatives should be asking is not whether Friday’s decision was right. It is how a government with eighteen months, a majority, a Team Canada framework, a dedicated Canada-U.S. trade minister and the personal engagement of a Prime Minister who campaigned on this exact competence arrived at August 2026 with:

• No agreement

• CUSMA drifting into indefinite annual reviews after the July 1 deadline passed without American agreement

• Tariffs applying to CUSMA-compliant goods, with no end date

• Roughly 5 per cent of our exports to the United States hit at 50 per cent

• A retaliation package that Ottawa itself admits will raise consumer prices

• And a trading relationship in which the United States still absorbs close to 70 per cent of everything we sell abroad

Eighteen months of strategy is supposed to produce leverage. What it produced was a country that gave up its counter-tariffs, dropped the digital services tax, and put American bourbon back on the shelf and is now facing a higher tariff wall than the one it started with, with the concessions already spent.

You do not get to bank the goodwill and keep the leverage. Ottawa tried, and discovered on Friday night which one it had actually traded away.

The ledger underneath

The tariff fight did not land on a strong foundation. It landed on this one.

A technical recession. Statistics Canada recorded two consecutive quarters of economic contraction across late 2025 and the first quarter of 2026. Exports fell 4.1 per cent. Business investment fell 3.6 per cent. The Prime Minister’s characterisation was that the economy was in a “settling-in” period.

Insolvencies at crisis-era levels. Consumer insolvency filings hit 37,523 in the second quarter of 2026 — the highest quarterly figure since 2009. Not since the global financial crisis have this many Canadian households formally admitted they cannot pay.

A fiscal position that has gone backwards. Carney campaigned explicitly on a “very different approach” to federal finances than his predecessor. The spring fiscal update landed a $65.3 billion deficit. Analysts at the Fraser Institute project deficits totalling roughly $321.7 billion over five years, and federal debt reaching 79.0 per cent of GDP by 2029-30 a worse trajectory than the one Justin Trudeau had tabled.

And $25 billion in tariff support spending borrowed, added to that same deficit, to soften a blow the negotiation was supposed to prevent.

That is the balance sheet a trade war now sits on top of.

The honest part and why it matters

I am not going to tell you the labour market is collapsing, because it isn’t, and you deserve better than a writer who only reads the numbers that flatter his argument.

Canada added 75,000 jobs in July. Unemployment fell to 6.4 per cent, the lowest in two years, and it is down half a point from a year ago. Employment is up roughly 196,000 year over year. The second quarter bounced back from the contraction. The IMF still projects Canada near the top of the G7 for growth. The government will cite every one of these figures, and they are real.

But note the date. Every one of those numbers was measured before midnight on August 22. Before the 50 per cent wall. Before September 8. TD’s own economists flagged the August 19 tariffs as a live downside risk in the same note where they welcomed the July jobs number.

The jobs data describes the economy Canada had last month. The tariff schedule describes the economy Canada has now.

Anyone in Ottawa waving the July labour force survey at you this week is showing you a photograph and calling it a forecast.

Who actually pays

Not the negotiators. Not the communications staff. Not the Prime Minister.

The independent brewery whose cans now cost half again as much to send south. The furniture maker in a small town where the plant is the town. The contractor whose lumber, plywood, doors and cement just got repriced on both sides of the border simultaneously American tariffs going out, Canadian counter-tariffs coming in. The farm looking at 50 per cent on agricultural inputs. The family already carrying the debt load that put insolvencies at a seventeen-year high, now absorbing a deliberate, government-chosen increase in the cost of ordinary goods.

Carney said Canada was attacked and that this is what war looks like. Perhaps. But in this one, the government picked the battlefield, spent eighteen months choosing its ground, and the casualties are small businesses and household budgets in every province.

What comes next

Parliament returns to a Budget 2026 the government has already promised will “go further.” Further, presumably, in the same direction that produced a $65.3 billion deficit, a technical recession, and no trade agreement.

The Conservative position is not that Canada should have signed anything put in front of it. Pierre Poilievre has been explicit that Canada cannot accept one-sided tariffs that would de-industrialise the country, and cannot accept a bad deal either. That is the correct position, and it has been the correct position for eighteen months.

The charge is narrower and harder to answer: this government told Canadians it had the relationships, the credibility and the expertise to manage Washington. It asked for a mandate on that basis. It has now had a year and a half, a majority, and the full apparatus of the federal state.

The result is a higher tariff wall than we started with, our concessions already spent, our trade agreement in limbo, and a Prime Minister explaining that the price increases coming to your grocery bill are regrettable but necessary.

Canadians were promised a manager. They got a narrator.

The tariffs are real. The deficit is real. The insolvencies are real. And on September 8, the bill starts arriving.

It is worth stating plainly what that phrase means. Charlie Kirk was assassinated. To say that someone should be “Charlie Kirked” is not to call them an idiot, attack their politics, criticize their work, or tell them they are wrong. It is to invoke the killing of a human being as the appropriate response to speech.

That this requires explanation says something troubling about the state of political discourse in 2026.

Disagreement Is Not the Problem

I hold strong political views and I have never pretended otherwise. I criticize governments, politicians, policies, and political movements when I believe criticism is warranted. Anyone is free to disagree with me. They can challenge my arguments, dispute my evidence, criticize my writing, unfollow me, block me, mock me, or tell me I am entirely wrong.

That is how a free society is supposed to function.

Wishing death on someone because you disagree with them is not.

I want to be equally clear about the reverse. I would not wish assassination, murder, or physical violence on anyone on the political left not because I have quietly come around to their position, and not because I am unwilling to criticize them. There are commentators whose ideas I fundamentally oppose and policies I believe have done serious damage to this country. I still do not want the people behind them harmed. I want to defeat their arguments.

That distinction should not be controversial.

Political Violence Is Not a Punchline

One of the more corrosive habits in online political culture is the assumption that words typed behind a screen carry no weight. The familiar defences follow: it was a joke, it’s just social media, don’t take it so seriously.

But there is nothing ambiguous about telling someone they should meet the same end as a person who was assassinated. If you would not say it to someone’s face, that is a reasonable signal that you should not type it from the safety of your phone.

Social media has persuaded a number of people that an invisible wall separates the internet from ordinary life. It does not. The person being discussed is real. So is their spouse. So are their children and the rest of their family.

It is also worth noting that, depending on the specific words used, the surrounding context, and the applicable law, threatening communications can carry consequences well beyond a comment thread. In Canada, uttering threats is addressed under section 264.1 of the Criminal Code. Whether any particular statement meets that legal threshold is a question for police, prosecutors, and ultimately the courts — not for commentators on social media, and not for me.

I am not claiming that every ugly comment constitutes a criminal offence. But neither would I assume that publishing something online confers immunity. Anyone who receives a statement they reasonably believe to be a credible threat has every right to preserve the evidence and bring it to law enforcement. If police investigate and conclude the threshold has been crossed, the comment tends to look considerably less clever in hindsight.

Principles Are Tested When You Dislike the Speaker

Defending free expression is easy when you agree with the person speaking. It becomes meaningful only when the speaker represents everything you oppose.

I do not want a Canada in which conservatives silence liberals through intimidation. I equally do not want one in which liberals silence conservatives the same way. I want a country where we can have fierce political arguments, expose bad policy, demand accountability, publish uncomfortable opinions and then go home to our families without wondering whether someone has decided that disagreement justifies violence.

That is not a conservative principle or a progressive one. It should simply be a Canadian one.

If your response to an opinion you find repugnant is to hope someone kills the person who holds it, you have not won the argument. You have abandoned it.

My Family Is Not Part of the Debate

Attack my arguments as vigorously as you like. I participate in public political debate by choice, criticism is part of the arrangement, and I can absorb a great deal of it.

Drawing my wife into fantasies about political violence is a different matter entirely. Political disagreement does not grant anyone a claim over another person’s family. My wife does not become acceptable collateral damage because someone dislikes what I publish.

I would say precisely the same thing if the political alignments were reversed. The spouses and families of people on the left are not fair game either. Having principles means applying one standard rather than inventing a second one for people you dislike.

What Democracy Is Actually For

Democracy exists to provide an alternative to political violence. We argue. We campaign. We organize. We protest peacefully. We publish. We vote. We try to persuade one another. Eventually someone wins an election and someone loses, and then the process begins again.

The moment assassination rhetoric becomes a normal feature of that process, everyone loses including the people using it.

So disagree with me. Challenge me. Tell me my argument is unserious. Bring evidence and prove me wrong. Vote against every position I hold.

But if your political worldview has reached the point where you believe my wife and I deserve to be killed for holding opinions you dislike, the issue is no longer political disagreement. It is the collapse of the basic conditions that allow people with fundamentally different beliefs to live alongside one another.

I intend to keep speaking. I intend to keep criticizing governments when I believe criticism is deserved, and to keep defending the positions I hold. I also intend to keep insisting that people on the other side of the aisle have exactly the same right.

Principles before politics means something only when those principles also protect the people you oppose.

Death threats are not political discourse. Assassination is not an argument. And political violence should never be treated as normal regardless of who is doing the talking

A red hat with four words on it has been running the American news cycle on and off for over a year now, and it is still working.

Trump puts on a “Trump 2028” hat, tosses one into a crowd at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, and within an hour you’ve got panels, threads, op-eds and emergency podcast episodes about the death of the republic. Constitutional scholars get booked. Someone says “authoritarian.” Someone else says “test balloon.” Everybody agrees this is the most serious thing that has ever happened, and then they do it all again the next time he puts the hat on.

The 22nd Amendment and Why a Trump Third Term Isn’t Happening

Let’s slow down and read the actual document.

The 22nd Amendment says no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice. That’s it. That’s the sentence. Trump was elected in 2016 and again in 2024. That’s twice. To get around it you’d need a constitutional amendment — two-thirds of the House, two-thirds of the Senate, and three-quarters of the states. A Tennessee congressman filed a resolution to do exactly that back in January 2025. It went nowhere, because of course it did. There is no realistic universe where 38 state legislatures ratify an amendment written to keep one specific 80-year-old man in office.

And here’s the part the panic coverage keeps skipping: Trump himself keeps saying so out loud. Asked about it again this month on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews, he said he’d love to run, but the law is very strong on that. He’s said versions of this repeatedly that it’s not something he’s looking to do, that it would be a very hard thing to do. Congressional Republicans have shrugged the whole thing off. One House committee chair called the idea too fanciful to discuss seriously.

So Why Does Trump Keep Wearing the Trump 2028 Hat?

Because the hat is a $50 attention machine, and it has been an absolute bargain. It sells merchandise, it keeps his name in every feed, it makes his opponents look hysterical, and it costs him nothing. Every single person quote-tweeting the hat in outrage is running his ad campaign for free. The man spent forty years learning that the only thing worse than bad press is no press, and the media still hasn’t figured out how to not take the bait. That’s not a conspiracy theory. That’s a marketing case study.

“Trump 2028” Doesn’t Have to Mean Donald Trump

Now here’s the thing almost nobody in the outrage cycle stops to consider: Donald isn’t the only Trump who could run.

“Trump 2028” is a slogan, not a birth certificate. There’s an entire family with the name on it and none of them are ruling anything out. Lara Trump has said she’d never say never to a White House bid and has twice looked hard at a Senate run. Eric Trump has declined to close the door on a run of his own. Don Jr. has been the clearest — he’s said he has zero interest in 2028 and pointed to his friendship with JD Vance — but “not this cycle” is not “never.” Trump Sr. has openly mused about his family being the next political dynasty and named Don Jr., Eric and Lara as capable of it.

Read the hat that way and it stops being a constitutional crisis and starts being what it probably always was: a brand keeping its options open.

My 2028 Republican Nominee Prediction: JD Vance or Marco Rubio

So let me put my own prediction on the record, because I’d rather be wrong in public than vague in public.

The 2028 Republican nominee will be JD Vance or Marco Rubio.

Not Donald Trump. Not a Trump child. Vance or Rubio.

What the 2028 Republican Primary Polls Actually Show

Here’s why. Eighteen months ago this looked like a coronation — Vance was the heir apparent, sitting north of 50% in early national primary polling with nobody close. That’s gone. Rubio has climbed from single digits into genuine contention on the strength of his run at State, and by this spring Emerson had them essentially tied nationally, 36 to 35, with DeSantis and Haley scraping 5% each. New Hampshire has tightened the same way. Rubio won a straw poll of Western Conservative Summit attendees outright with 57% to Vance’s 21%. Vance still took CPAC at 53%, with Rubio second at 35% up from 3% a year earlier. Some national polling averages still show Vance with a comfortable lead. The honest summary is that the numbers disagree with each other, which is exactly what you’d expect two and a half years out.

But look at what every single one of those surveys has in common. It’s a two-man race. Everyone else is in the noise. There is no third lane forming, no dark horse governor pulling double digits, no Trump family member appearing anywhere near the top of a primary ballot test.

Why Trump’s Endorsement Decides the 2028 Republican Nomination

The other thing that matters more than any poll: Trump’s endorsement decides this. He’s the decider in this party and has been through every primary of 2026. He’s already called a Vance–Rubio ticket unstoppable and a dream team — and pointedly has not said who should be on top of it. That’s not indecision. That’s leverage. He gets to keep both men loyal and both camps courting him for another two years, and the hat is part of the same play. As long as “Trump 2028” is technically still on the table, he isn’t a lame duck and nobody in his party can afford to move on from him.

That’s the whole trick. The hat isn’t a coup. It’s a leash.

The Bottom Line on the Trump 2028 Hat

So by all means, argue about 2028, it’s a real race with real stakes and two serious contenders with genuinely different instincts on foreign policy, trade and what “America First” means after Trump. That’s a conversation worth having.

Just don’t have it with a hat.

Scroll your feed for ten minutes and you’ll hit it. An MP filming themselves in the back of a car, phone held at arm’s length, talking to you like you’re a friend they’re catching up with. A national news anchor doing a vertical explainer with jump cuts and captions burned in. A cabinet minister on somebody’s podcast, sleeves rolled up, coffee mug in frame, laughing at a joke about their own department.

Five years ago that would have been a communications-shop nightmare. Now it’s the strategy.

The audience moved, so they moved

Here’s the unglamorous reason behind all of it: the room emptied out.

The six o’clock broadcast, the daily paper, the press-gallery scrum, those used to be the only doors into the living room. They aren’t anymore. Younger voters especially don’t watch appointment television. They get news the same way they get everything else, in a vertical feed, from a person’s face, in under ninety seconds.

Political parties and newsrooms did the math and came to the same conclusion. If you want to reach people where they actually are, you can’t wait for the gatekeeper to book you. You become the channel yourself.

So the format changed. The suit came off. The tripod came out.

What “creator style” actually means

It’s worth naming the specific moves, because once you see them you can’t unsee them.

The selfie walk-and-talk. Phone in hand, slightly-too-close framing, talking while moving through an airport or a hallway. It signals access, you’re getting the unfiltered version.

The hook in the first two seconds. “Nobody’s talking about this.” “I need to explain what just happened.” “So this is my actual schedule today.” That’s not political speech-writing. That’s retention editing, straight out of the creator playbook.

The captions and jump cuts. Every dead beat removed. Bold subtitles. Sometimes a little zoom punch on the key word.

The day in the life. Committee meeting, coffee, constituency office, kid’s hockey game. Regular guy energy, professionally produced.

The podcast clip. Ninety minutes of long-form conversation, sliced into thirty vertical clips and pushed out over a month.

And the studio-free news hit, an anchor who normally sits behind a desk in a blazer, now leaning into a phone camera in a stairwell, explaining a budget line item like they’re texting you about it.

The point of the format is trust

Every one of those choices is doing the same job: making an institution feel like a person.

That’s the whole trade. Polished production reads as corporate, and corporate reads as untrustworthy right now. Rough-around-the-edges reads as honest. So the professionals are deliberately roughing up their own edges, the imperfect lighting, the unscripted “uh,” the messy office background, because imperfection has become the signal for authenticity.

It works, too. That’s the uncomfortable part. It genuinely does work on people.

The problem: a format can be borrowed, a track record can’t

Here’s where it gets interesting for anyone paying close attention.

The creator format was built by people who had no institutional power. No press secretary, no research team, no broadcast contract. They had a phone and whatever credibility they earned one video at a time. The casual delivery was authentic because there was nothing behind it to be inauthentic about.

When that same format gets adopted by someone with a communications budget, a caucus line and a comms director reviewing the script, the surface stays the same but the substance underneath it is completely different. You’re being shown intimacy that was approved in a meeting.

And voters aren’t stupid about this. The tell is always the same: watch what happens when the questions get hard. If the walk-and-talk energy is there for the announcement video and gone the second there’s an inconvenient file to answer for, people notice. The format promises access. If the access isn’t real, the format eventually becomes evidence against you.

Same goes for the news side. An anchor doing a vertical explainer is still making editorial choices about what’s worth explaining and what isn’t. Friendlier packaging doesn’t change the calls being made underneath it.

To be fair, is this actually a bad thing?

I’ll give the other side its due, because there’s a real argument here.

Politicians talking directly to constituents without a filter in between isn’t inherently a downgrade. Scrums and clipped soundbites weren’t exactly a golden age of nuance either. A ten-minute video where an MP actually explains a bill in plain language is arguably more informative than a fourteen-second clip chosen by an editor.

And people should be able to see their representatives as human. That’s not a trick, that’s a democracy working the way it’s supposed to.

The concern isn’t the format. It’s when the format becomes a substitute for the substance instead of a delivery method for it. Warmth is not accountability. Relatability is not a record.

What this means if you’re building an audience yourself

If you create content, for a business, a cause, or your own platform, this shift has a direct consequence for you.

The bar just moved. Your competition for attention isn’t only other independent creators anymore. It’s institutions with production teams who have now learned your language and are speaking it fluently.

The good news is that they can only borrow the surface. What they can’t manufacture is the thing that made independent creators credible in the first place: showing up consistently, saying the same thing whether it’s convenient or not, and being reachable in your own comment section.

That’s still yours. Lean into it.

The bottom line

Liberal MPs, MPs of every stripe, national anchors, ministers, party staff, they’re all making creator-style video now because that’s where the audience is, and the audience rewards the feeling of talking to a real person.

Fine. But keep your head about it. A phone camera and a friendly tone are production choices, not character references. The question worth asking isn’t does this feel authentic. It’s does what this person is saying match what they’ve actually done.

Judge the record. The format is just packaging.

Not from a phone call. Not from an email. Not from a message asking me to explain a single thing I’ve ever said. I found out the way most people find out after the fact, from someone else, once it was already published.

The name attached to it is Keir Atkinson. I have never met her. I have never spoken to her. We have never exchanged a message, a comment, a call, or a coffee. She has never asked me what I think, why I think it, where I got it, or whether she had it right. Not once.

And yet somehow she knows enough about me to file me under a heading.

I want to be careful here, because I’m not going to do to her what I think was done to me. I’m not going to guess at her motives. I’m not going to speculate about who pays her or what she wants. I don’t know, and I’m not going to pretend I do. What I know is one thing, and it’s the only thing that matters: she never asked.

That’s not a small detail. That’s the whole ballgame.

There’s a basic standard in any honest work that involves describing another person journalism, research, HR, policing, a co-op board, doesn’t matter. You reach out to the person. You give them a chance to answer. Not because you owe them a favour, but because you can’t actually know if you’re right until you do. The call isn’t a courtesy. The call is the method. Skip it and you don’t have findings, you have a hunch with footnotes.

I’ve been doing content for over 6 years. I’ve sat on both sides of that call. I’ve been the guy asking, and I’ve been the guy answering. When someone reaches out and says here’s what I’ve got, here’s what it looks like from where I’m sitting, what am I missing that’s a person trying to get it right. Sometimes they still publish something I don’t like. That’s fine. That’s the deal. I got my shot.

A list built without that step isn’t reporting. It’s sorting. And sorting is a lot faster, because you don’t have to talk to anybody. You just decide what the categories are, and then you decide who goes where.

Here’s the part I keep coming back to, and it’s bigger than me.

These lists always rest on the same quiet assumption: that ordinary people are being fooled. That there’s a population out there absorbing the wrong ideas from the wrong voices, and the fix is to identify the wrong voices and flag them. It’s a tidy theory. It also requires believing that Canadians have no independent access to their own lives.

But they do. That’s the thing nobody accounts for.

Canadians have watched the last eleven years unfold in real time. We’ve lived through the decisions, paid the bills, and felt the consequences. We didn’t read about it. We were in it.

Nobody had to tell a young couple in Calgary or Halifax that a house got further away. They watched it happen from the passenger seat of a car outside an open house they couldn’t afford to bid on. Nobody had to explain groceries to the woman doing mental math in the checkout line, putting one thing back. Nobody had to brief a small business owner on fuel costs, he watched his margin get eaten one fill-up at a time, and he knows exactly which month it stopped working. Nobody had to warn a family about the mortgage renewal. It arrived. It had a number on it. They read the number.

You can call that anecdote if you want. I call it evidence. It’s the most direct evidence there is, because there’s no intermediary standing between the person and the fact. It’s their money. Their kitchen table. Their kid’s future. They were present for all of it.

And when someone shows up eleven years in to explain that what people experienced isn’t quite what they think they experienced, and that certain voices are to blame for the confusion, people notice. Not because they’re gullible. Because they’re not.

I’ve said things people disagree with, There’s no doubt about that. I’ll say more of them. I’ve been wrong about things, and when I am, I’d rather hear it from someone who took ten minutes to ask me a question than from a spreadsheet cell I never saw coming. I’m genuinely easy to reach. My name is on everything I publish. There’s no anonymous account, no burner, no shell. If Keir Atkinson wants to talk, the door is open and it always was. That offer is real and it stands.

But I’m not going to pretend a list is an argument. And I’m not going to accept the premise underneath it that Canadians can’t be trusted to interpret their own lives without supervision.

We can. We have been. We’ve been doing it in real time for eleven years, at the pump, at the till, at the bank, at the kitchen table where the bills get opened.

Sometimes the best source is your own eyes.

It’s coming from someone who’s tired of being made to look naive for taking this government at its word.

Bill 25 Passed in March. The UCP Had Five Months. It Blew Them.

An Act to Remove Politics and Ideology from Classrooms was tabled March 31. It was debated. It passed in the spring. The government wrote the timeline itself: September 1, proclamation, in time for the school year.

Nobody imposed that date on Danielle Smith’s government. It chose the date. It announced the date. It ran on the principle behind the date.

Then, on August 14 with Calgary students returning August 31 the UCP moved the flag restrictions, the weekly anthem requirement, and the minister’s school-naming power to “to be determined.”

Not cancelled. Not amended. Not rescheduled. To be determined.

Five months to write a regulation. Five months to publish an exemptions list. Five months of paid summer, full ministry staff, a majority government with no opposition capable of stopping anything. And what Alberta got, two weeks before the bell, was a shrug in an email.

The Alberta Classroom Flag Policy Was Never Ready — And They Knew It

Here is the detail that should end any generous reading of this.

The flag provision limits displays inside and outside Alberta schools to the Canadian and Alberta flags, with exemptions the government promised to specify later. That exemptions list was the whole ballgame. Every superintendent in this province was waiting on one document.

It was never published. Not in April. Not in June. Not in August. Not at all.

And the hard questions weren’t a surprise. The Alberta Teachers’ Association raised them publicly back in the spring, what happens to the Pride flag, the Métis flag, the francophone flags? Edmonton Public Schools already has a standing regulation directing that Treaty 6 and Métis flags be displayed in its schools. That is a head-on collision between a provincial rule and an existing local policy, and it was visible from a mile away in March.

The government knew the questions were coming. It had five months. It produced nothing.

So let’s stop calling this a delay to help schools. Schools didn’t create this mess. Schools were told to plan an entire year around a rule whose final text didn’t exist. The delay isn’t consideration for anyone. It’s a government buying time to finish homework it didn’t do.

“Thoughtful and Measured” Is What You Say When You Have Nothing

The ministry’s statement says it remains committed to implementation and is taking a “thoughtful and measured approach.”

Read that again and ask what it actually tells you.

It doesn’t tell you what went wrong. It doesn’t tell you what the legal issue is, if there is one. It doesn’t tell you when the exemptions land. It doesn’t tell you whether the policy survives the school year or quietly dies of neglect. It contains no date, no reason, and no commitment anyone could ever hold this government to.

That isn’t communication. That’s a phrase engineered to look like an answer while carrying none.

And Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides was not made available for an interview.

That’s the tell. A minister who has a good reason takes twenty minutes and gives it. A minister who doesn’t sends a press secretary and an email.

The Selective Delay Nobody in the UCP Will Explain

Now here’s the part that turns frustration into genuine suspicion.

Not all of Bill 25 was delayed. Plenty of it is proceeding September 1 exactly as promised the new student code of conduct on violence, the prohibition on school boards issuing statements on political and social matters, the requirement that teachers deliver subject matter neutrally.

Those made it. On time. No problem.

The three provisions that would have produced the loudest headlines in the country are the three that slipped to “to be determined.”

I’m not going to allege a motive I can’t prove. But I’ll say the obvious: when a government ships the quiet half of a bill on schedule and postpones the loud half indefinitely, with no date and no minister willing to face a microphone, people will draw their own conclusions. And this government has handed them absolutely nothing else to work with.

If that reading is unfair, the UCP has one job make it unfair. Say something. Anything with a date in it.

This Is How the UCP Hands the Alberta NDP a Free Win

Let me be precise about what I’m not saying. I am not asking anyone to rush a bad regulation. A rule drafted carelessly enough to collapse in a Charter challenge helps nobody, and if there’s a real constitutional problem in the exemption framework, fixing it is the right call.

Then say that out loud.

“We found a legal risk in the exemptions and we’re fixing it before proclamation. Here’s the new date.” Grown-ups accept that. Supporters accept that. I’d accept that this afternoon.

What nobody should accept is silence dressed up as prudence.

Because every unexplained delay costs this government twice. It teaches its own base that the commitments are softer than the press releases — that the announcement was the product and the delivery was always optional. And it hands the Alberta NDP a line they didn’t have to write themselves: this is a government better at announcing policy than governing.

That line is now true enough to sting. The UCP made it true.

What Fixing the Alberta Flag Policy Actually Takes

The remedy here is embarrassingly small, which is exactly why the failure is so hard to excuse.

Publish the exemptions list. Set a real date and put it in writing. Put Nicolaides in front of a camera for twenty minutes and let reporters ask whatever they want.

That’s it. That’s the entire fix. It’s a week of work and one uncomfortable afternoon.

This is a government with a mandate, a majority, and years of runway. It should be governing like it’s building something. Instead it’s governing like it’s hoping nobody keeps score.

First, they doxxed my daughter. They dug up a child’s personal information and spread it across the internet because they disagreed with her father’s politics.

I thought that was the bottom. It wasn’t.

Now they’ve escalated. They are creating fake profiles impersonating my child accounts built to look like her, sound like her, and post as her. Why? For one reason only: to get a reaction out of me. To provoke, to bait, to wound my family badly enough that I finally shut up and disappear.

Let me say this as plainly as I can:

This is not political disagreement.

Political disagreement is arguing about tax policy. It’s debating immigration, education, or free speech. I welcome that debate every single day, with anyone, on any platform.

Targeting someone’s children is something else entirely. It is sick. It is obsessive. It is predatory behaviour. And it deserves to be named for exactly what it is.

When You Can’t Win the Argument, You Go After the Kids

Here’s what I’ve learned about the radical left’s harassment machine: when they can’t beat your argument, they attack you. And when attacking you doesn’t work, they go after your family.

These are the same people who lecture the rest of us endlessly about “protecting children,” about “online safety,” about “harassment.” Yet the moment a parent steps out of line politically, the mask slips. Suddenly a child is fair game. Suddenly doxxing a minor is “activism.” Suddenly impersonating someone’s daughter online is a joke.

It isn’t activism. It isn’t a joke. Online impersonation and doxxing are harassment full stop and in many places they’re illegal. If the roles were reversed, you’d never hear the end of it. There would be headlines, hashtags, and calls for accountability within the hour.

But because the target is a conservative family, the silence is deafening.

Ask Yourself Who Does This

Think about what it actually takes to do what these people are doing.

It takes hours of obsession. Digging through a child’s photos. Studying how she writes. Building fake accounts in her name. Monitoring a parent’s every post, waiting for a reaction.

Normal people don’t do this. Well-adjusted adults with functioning moral compasses do not spend their evenings impersonating other people’s children on the internet.

This is the behaviour of obsessives. And every so-called “tolerant” voice that stays quiet while it happens is telling you exactly what their principles are worth.

No, I’m Not Leaving the Internet

I know what they want. They want me to log off, delete my accounts, and teach every other outspoken parent the lesson: speak up and your kids become targets.

So let me be clear about what happens next.

I’m not leaving. I’m not going quiet. I’m doing the opposite.

I am documenting everything. Every fake profile. Every doxxing attempt. Every threat. And I’m going to expose exactly how far these people are willing to go publicly, with receipts.

Because the only thing harassment campaigns can’t survive is sunlight.

What You Can Do Right Now

Share it. This needs to be called out, loudly. The more people who see how this machine operates, the less power it has.

Report the fake accounts. Impersonation violates the rules of every major platform. Make the platforms enforce their own policies.

Protect your own kids. Lock down their profiles. Talk to them about online safety. If you speak publicly about politics, assume your family’s digital footprint is being watched and act accordingly.

They thought targeting my child would make me stop talking.

They have badly misjudged this parent.

The Premier of Ontario; a man who ran as a common-sense conservative, a businessman, an adult, has spent the past weeks promising to “dismantle the U.S. economy” in response to Washington’s tariff threats. Read that again. The premier of a province of 16 million people is threatening to dismantle a $30-trillion economy. That’s not strength. That’s a man who has confused a press conference with a hockey fight.

Someone take Doug Ford’s Twitter access away for a bit and let the adults deal with this.

The math doesn’t care about your feelings

Here is the reality that no amount of chest-thumping changes:

The American economy is more than 13 times larger than Canada’s. In 2025, 71.7% of Canadian merchandise exports went to the United States. Our formal trade relationship stretches back to 1854, the Reciprocity Treaty, over 170 years of the most successful bilateral trading partnership in human history.

When an economy our size gets into a slugging match with an economy their size, we do not win. We don’t come close to winning. Every “retaliatory” tariff Ford demands is a tax on Ontario families, Ontario manufacturers, and Ontario jobs. The auto worker in Windsor doesn’t get a paycheque from a viral tweet. The farmer in Chatham-Kent doesn’t sell soybeans to a hashtag.

“Find new markets” is not a plan, it’s a slogan

Yes, Canada should diversify. Every serious person has said so for decades. But here’s what the sloganeers won’t tell you: trade deals take years to negotiate. Pipelines take years to approve and build; and it was the Laurentian political class, the same class Mark Carney belongs to, that spent a decade killing Northern Gateway and Energy East and strangling our capacity to sell energy to anyone but the Americans.

You cannot spend ten years blocking the infrastructure that would have given Canada options, then stand at a podium and act shocked that we have no options. Ford’s tariff-for-tariff temper tantrums and Carney’s “everything’s on the table” posturing are two verses of the same song: politicians substituting theatre for the boring, decade-long work they never did.

Angry tweets won’t replace our largest customer overnight. Nothing will replace our largest customer overnight. That’s the whole point.

The Carney problem

And where is the Prime Minister in all this? Mark Carney says “everything’s on the table” everything, apparently, except a signed deal. The banker who lectured the world about prudence is now letting Ontario’s premier freelance foreign policy from his phone while the clock runs down on tariffs that will hammer steel, aluminum, autos, and agriculture.

Two men, one strategy: look tough, do nothing, and let ordinary Canadians absorb the cost. So how long, exactly, are Canadians expected to suffer while Doug Ford and Mark Carney ignore economic reality?

What adults would do

Adults would negotiate quietly and relentlessly. Adults would fast-track the pipelines, ports, and LNG terminals that give Canada real leverage instead of rhetorical leverage. Adults would cut the interprovincial trade barriers that cost us more than American tariffs ever will. Adults would understand that when your customer buys 71.7% of what you sell, you do not insult him for applause you out-negotiate him.

Strength isn’t volume. Strength is options. And until Canada builds them, every tough-guy soundbite out of Queen’s Park is a cheque written on an empty account and you, the Canadian taxpayer, are the one who covers it.

He says it in Ottawa. He says it in Vancouver. He says it in front of cameras in Calgary, with the practiced calm of a man who has spent his entire career being the smartest person in rooms that Albertans were never invited into.

And every time he says it, the same question hangs in the air over this province like flare stack smoke:

Where was that concern about unity while the Liberals were writing Bill C-69?

Where was it during the tanker ban? During the killing of Northern Gateway? During Energy East? During the emissions cap, the Clean Electricity Regulations, the carbon tax, and a decade of policy that treated Alberta’s economy as a moral problem to be managed rather than a national asset to be built on?

Carney didn’t parachute into Canadian politics in 2025 from a neutral orbit. He was there. He advised Justin Trudeau. He chaired the Liberal Party’s economic growth task force in 2020. He built the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero a global project to line up the world’s banks behind capital rules that made financing Canadian oil and gas harder, not easier. He was the intellectual architecture of the very agenda that hollowed out Western Canada’s energy sector.

Now he wants Albertans to pretend none of it happened.

That is not unity. That is an alibi.

Bill C-69: The “No More Pipelines” Act That Never Actually Died

Let’s start with the file that broke the trust, because Ottawa desperately wants you to forget the details.

Bill C-69, the Impact Assessment Act, passed in 2019. Alberta called it the No More Pipelines Act. Ottawa called that hysteria.

In October 2023, the Supreme Court of Canada sided with Alberta. It ruled the federal impact assessment regime largely unconstitutional a federal overreach into provincial jurisdiction. Not “poorly communicated.” Not “misunderstood by Albertans.” Unconstitutional.

That is the single most important fact in Canadian energy politics, and it is the one you will never hear in a unity speech.

So what did Ottawa do? It did not repeal the bill. It tinkered with it in a budget bill in 2024 and left the machine running. And when Carney took over, he didn’t repeal it either. He built a new office on top of it Bill C-5’s major projects office so that projects Ottawa personally likes can be waved past the wall Ottawa built.

Read that again, because it is the whole story of Confederation in 2026:

Ottawa did not remove the barrier. Ottawa kept the barrier and made itself the gatekeeper of who gets to walk around it.

That is not a free market. That is not federalism. That is a permission economy, run out of the Prime Minister’s Office, where Alberta’s prosperity depends on staying in the good graces of the same people who spent ten years calling our industry a liability.

The Tanker Ban Stays. That’s Your Answer On Unity.

If you want to know exactly what Alberta is worth to this federal government, look at what happened on July 2, 2026.

Carney flew to British Columbia and signed a deal with Premier David Eby. The headline he wanted was the money the Prime Minister said the agreement would “help unlock more than $200 billion in new investment.”

But here is the line Eby got, and got in writing:

“It ensures that the northern tanker ban stays in place.”

Bill C-48 stays. The Oil Tanker Moratorium Act the law that shut Alberta out of the northern Pacific coast, the law that killed the business case for Northern Gateway, the law that exists for exactly one commodity produced by exactly one region is not going anywhere.

Think about what that means. British Columbia asked Ottawa to protect a ban that costs Alberta billions, and Ottawa said yes. Alberta has asked Ottawa to lift it for seven years, and Ottawa says the conversation is complicated.

One province gets a veto written into a federal agreement. The other gets a unity speech.

And notice what B.C. also secured: a promise of compensation for environmental risk, and an agreement not to fight the pipeline in court. Ottawa found money for the province that objects. Ottawa found leverage for the province that objects. What did the province that produces the resource get? An invoice.

The $43-Billion Bill For A Pipeline The Private Sector Would Have Built For Free

Here is the part that should make every fiscal conservative in this country physically ill.

Alberta has now formally submitted the West Coast Pipeline, Bruderheim to Delta, more than one million barrels a day to Asian markets. The estimated cost, with contingency, runs $35.2 to $43.7 billion. The ownership structure is the Government of Alberta, the federally-owned Trans Mountain Corporation, and Pembina with a minority stake.

So the taxpayer builds it. Again.

We have been here before. Ottawa bought Trans Mountain in 2018 for $4.5 billion because the regulatory environment Ottawa itself created scared off a private buyer, then spent north of $30 billion finishing it. Now we are doing the sequel — a state-owned pipeline, on the public dime, to solve a problem that public policy manufactured.

Run the counterfactual, because nobody in Ottawa will:

• Northern Gateway was approved in 2014. Trudeau killed it in 2016. Private capital. Private risk.

• Energy East was cancelled in 2017 after the review goalposts moved to downstream emissions. Private capital. Private risk.

• Keystone XL died on a Washington desk while our government stayed quiet.

Three private pipelines, zero taxpayer exposure, killed or abandoned. Their replacement is a forty-billion-dollar Crown project that Canadians will carry on their books for a generation.

That is what a decade of Liberal energy policy actually cost. Not a slogan. A number.

And the man now selling it as a triumph of national unity is the same man who spent those years explaining to the world’s financial institutions why capital should flow away from projects exactly like this one.

Carney’s Deal Isn’t Reconciliation. It’s a Toll Booth.

Supporters will point to the Carney–Smith memorandum signed in November 2025 and say: look, Alberta won.

Look closer at what “winning” means now.

Alberta received an exemption from the Clean Electricity Regulations. Alberta received a negotiated industrial carbon price $100 a tonne this year, rising to roughly $130 by 2030 rather than the federal $170 track. Alberta received a pipeline pathway with a construction target of September 2027.

Every one of those is described in Ottawa as a concession to Alberta.

Stop and hear that word. A concession.

Relief from federal policies that never should have been imposed on a provincial jurisdiction in the first place is not a gift. Being allowed to build infrastructure on your own resource is not generosity. Ottawa spent ten years standing on our throat, and now removing its boot by degrees — on a schedule, with conditions, subject to review is presented as statesmanship.

This is the toll booth model of Confederation. Ottawa erects the barrier, Ottawa charges for the passage, Ottawa takes credit for the traffic.

And Albertans are supposed to be grateful, quietly, until the next election makes it convenient to reverse.

Because that is the other thing nobody in Ottawa wants to discuss: none of this is locked in. A memorandum of understanding is not a statute. An exemption granted by cabinet can be revoked by cabinet. Eby is already publicly complaining that Alberta got a carbon price “the rest of us don’t have access to.” The pressure to claw it back started before the ink dried.

Albertans have watched federal promises die before. We remember the 2021 referendum 61.7 per cent voted to strike equalization from the Constitution. Ottawa’s response was to note the result and change nothing.

October 19 Is Not A Threat. It’s A Receipt.

On October 19, 2026, Albertans go to the polls on ten referendum questions. Provincial control over immigration. Senate abolition. Provincial law taking priority over conflicting federal law. Provincial selection of judges. And one question on whether to begin the legal process toward a binding vote on separation.

The national press will spend the next three months calling that a tantrum.

It isn’t. It is a receipt.

Every one of those questions is a direct, itemized consequence of a federal government that spent a decade governing as though Western Canada were a rounding error with a grievance problem. You cannot spend ten years telling a region its industry is illegitimate, its constitutional wins don’t matter, its referendums don’t count, and its coastline is off limits and then act shocked when that region starts reading the fine print of Confederation.

Ottawa built this ballot. Every clause of it.

The Bottom Line

Mark Carney is a serious man with a serious résumé, and he is very good at the part of politics where you sound reasonable.

But unity is not a speech. Unity is a record.

You cannot attack the West for a decade and then demand solidarity the moment it becomes useful to Ottawa. You cannot keep the tanker ban, keep the Impact Assessment Act, keep the gatekeeper power and call the leftovers a partnership.

Canada is broken. Not because Albertans stopped believing in it, but because Ottawa spent ten years proving that belief was a one-way transaction.

So take your unity speeches and shove them.

Bring back the pipelines you killed. Repeal C-69. Repeal C-48. Then and only then come talk to us about what we owe each other.

Albertans aren’t buying the act anymore. And we’re counting.

Let’s slow down and read the actual policy before we let anyone tell us how to feel about it.

What the Law Actually Says

On July 22, 2026, Alberta brought into force new rules under Bill 29 creating a category called “preventative health testing services”. This is not “all preventive testing.” It’s a narrow category defined by three conditions:

• The test is provided by a licensed practitioner

• The patient obtains it through self-referral, meaning without a doctor’s requisition

• The health minister has specifically designated that test as eligible for the category

That’s it. That’s the whole category. Nothing in the amended Alberta Health Care Insurance Act touches tests that a doctor or nurse practitioner actually orders for you.

The Alberta government’s own page on the policy spells this out directly: “Under Alberta’s Public Health Guarantee, all practitioner-recommended tests continue to be fully covered and prioritized in all facilities, public or private, across the province”. If your doctor sends you for a mammogram, a colonoscopy, bloodwork, an MRI anything it stays covered, full stop, whether you get it done in a public facility or a private one.

What actually changes is narrower and more specific: if you, personally, want a test your doctor hasn’t ordered no referral, no medical workup, just walking in and asking for it you can now pay to get that specific, minister-designated test done faster. That’s the entire policy. Which specific tests will be designated hasn’t even been finalized yet; Alberta says more detail is coming later this year.

Compare that to Irwin’s framing: “all preventive testing” becoming “uninsured.” That’s not a rounding error. That’s the difference between a targeted policy change and a false claim designed to make Albertans panic about losing coverage they are not, in fact, losing.

The Detail Janis Left Out

Here’s the sentence that should have been in her post and wasn’t: if a doctor or other practitioner recommends the test, you’re covered, period. Not “covered eventually.” Not “covered if you’re lucky.” Fully covered and prioritized, according to Alberta’s own published guarantee.

Leaving that out isn’t a small oversight. It’s the entire ballgame. It’s the difference between “the government is taking away your healthcare” and “the government created an optional, self-pay lane for a narrow list of tests you’d otherwise have to wait to even request.”

The Hypocrisy

Here’s where it gets interesting.

Janis Irwin has been one of the most vocal opponents of Alberta’s restrictions on minors accessing puberty blockers and hormone therapy, legislation the UCP passed using the notwithstanding clause. She’s called those restrictions “an attack” on trans youth and “divisive fear mongering,” and argued strenuously that decisions about a young person’s medical care and bodily autonomy shouldn’t be second-guessed by the government.

Fair enough that’s a real, consistent position on medical autonomy, and she’s entitled to hold it.

But apply that same logic to this policy and something doesn’t add up. Here we have a competent adult, using their own money, requesting an optional test that isn’t even mandatory to begin with. No one is forced to pay for anything. No one loses coverage they currently have. And suddenly, for Irwin, personal medical choice isn’t a principle worth defending it’s “American-style health care.”

You can’t have it both ways. Either individuals get to make choices about their own bodies and their own healthcare spending, or the government gets final say. Irwin wants maximum deference to individual choice when the subject is a minor changing their body, and zero deference to individual choice when the subject is an adult paying out of pocket for a test their doctor didn’t order. That’s not a principle. That’s a preference dressed up as one.

To Be Fair: There Is a Real Debate Here

None of this means Bill 29 is beyond criticism, and a factual piece should say so. The Alberta Medical Association has raised legitimate concerns about this policy namely that self-referred testing without a doctor’s involvement could produce a wave of “incidental findings” (abnormalities that look scary but aren’t clinically significant), potentially costing the public system up to $1 million a year in unnecessary follow-up care, and straining a system that’s already stretched thin. Groups like Friends of Medicare and the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives argue this is one more step toward a two-tier system where money buys speed.

Those are real arguments worth having. You can absolutely believe that self-pay diagnostic testing is bad policy, that it risks pulling resources from the public system, or that it’s a step toward a system you don’t want to live in. That’s a legitimate debate about values and outcomes.

What you can’t do, what Irwin did, is skip the debate entirely and just tell people the government made “all preventive testing” uninsured. That’s not a policy critique. That’s a scare tactic that only works if nobody checks the actual law.

Read the Law Yourself

Janis Irwin might be able to gaslight her own base into outrage before they check a single source. The rest of us can read the Alberta Health Care Insurance Act amendments, read the government’s own Public Health Guarantee language, and based on what it actually does, not on what an MLA needs you to believe it does before you’ve had a chance to look.

That’s the difference between debating policy honestly and manufacturing outrage for clicks. I’ll take the facts every time. And it’s exactly why I’m proud to be a Conservative a party that will let you argue the merits, instead of one that needs you angry before you’ve read a word of the bill.

From Jack Layton to This: How Far the NDP Has Fallen

It’s worth pausing on what the NDP used to be, because the contrast is the whole story.

Jack Layton led the federal NDP from 2003 until his death in August 2011. Whatever you thought of his politics, nobody seriously questioned his integrity. He built the party’s brand around working-class Canadians, pensions, healthcare, housing, wages for people punching a clock, and he did it while earning respect across party lines, including from opponents who disagreed with him on almost everything. In the 2011 election, he led the NDP to its best federal result ever, 103 seats and Official Opposition status for the first time in the party’s history, on the strength of that reputation. When he died weeks later, his final letter to Canadians closed with a line that became a kind of national touchstone: “love is better than anger, hope is better than fear, optimism is better than despair.” Whatever else you want to say about Jack Layton, the man stood for something bigger than the next news cycle, and he treated the working people he represented like the point of the exercise rather than a prop.

Compare that to the party’s current cast. Today’s NDP from the leader’s chair in Ottawa down to the MLA’s office in Edmonton looks less like a movement built around working people and more like an improv troupe competing for the next viral clip. A federal leadership built on ideological maximalism that immediately alienates the party’s own provincial wings. A provincial leader who apologizes for photographs depending on which faction yells loudest that week. An MLA who treats mocking a sitting premier as fascist over pancakes as a punchline worth amplifying rather than beneath her office. That’s not the party of Jack Layton. That’s the party of a drama class final exam heavy on performance, light on the substance he actually built his career on.

Naheed Nenshi: The Leader Who Apologizes for Photographs

Naheed Nenshi was supposed to be the NDP’s saviour in Alberta the smooth-talking former Calgary mayor who could finally make the provincial party look like a government-in-waiting. Instead, he’s spent 2026 demonstrating exactly why that project is stalling out.

In early July, Nenshi was photographed with Israeli Ambassador Iddo Moed at the Calgary Stampede a routine diplomatic courtesy that the embassy posted as a show of Canada-Israel goodwill. Nothing scandalous about it, until the loudest voices inside his own party’s base got angry. Days later, on July 16, Nenshi caved and posted an apology, writing that after “talking to many people in the community over the last couple of days, I better understand the immense hurt that has been caused” (The CJN).

The backlash to the apology was, if anything, louder than the original complaint. Alberta Jewish community leaders said Nenshi had capitulated to “the most vocal and extreme voices” in his coalition, warning that punishing a politician for simply standing next to a foreign diplomat “sets a troubling precedent” and “risks creating an environment where engagement itself becomes impossible” (The CJN). Ambassador Moed’s response cut right to it: “Friendship should never be controversial.”

That’s the Nenshi playbook in miniature: say yes to everyone, offend everyone, apologize to whoever screamed last. It’s not leadership. It’s damage control on a loop.

And Albertans have noticed. An Angus Reid poll found Nenshi’s “very impressed” rating has fallen to just 20 percent down seven points in a single year trailing Premier Danielle Smith’s 34 percent, according to reporting cited in The Walrus (thewalrus.ca). Legacy media’s own polling analysis put it more bluntly: the “star candidate” recruited to save the Alberta NDP is “losing lustre” Canada’s National Observer hardly a conservative outlet ran a piece bluntly titled “Naheed Nenshi needs to step up or step down” (National Observer).

When even sympathetic commentators are asking whether your leader should quit, that’s not a messaging problem. That’s a leadership problem.

Avi Lewis: The Federal NDP’s New Radical-in-Chief

If the provincial wing is adrift, the federal party just handed the wheel to someone even further out to sea. On March 29, 2026, documentary filmmaker and Leap Manifesto co-founder Avi Lewis won the federal NDP leadership on the first ballot with 56 percent support. He inherits a party that collapsed from 24 seats to just seven in the last federal election, one seat short of official party status.

Lewis’s answer to near-extinction? Go bigger on ideology. His platform includes a wealth tax on the top one percent, a government-run grocery chain, an end to new fossil fuel project approvals, free public transit, and a state pharmaceutical manufacturer (CP24). On victory night he declared “our party is back and our tent is growing” an odd boast for a caucus you could fit in a minivan.

Here’s the part that should make every New Democrat nervous: his own provincial counterparts think he’s a liability. Nenshi publicly said Lewis’s direction was “not in the interests” of Alberta. Saskatchewan NDP leader Carla Beck went further, refusing to even meet with Lewis unless he backed off his energy policies, writing that “it’s impossible to support and respect working people without respecting the jobs they have”. This is a party whose federal leader and provincial leaders in two resource-dependent provinces are publicly feuding within days of his win not over tone, but over whether his signature policy should exist at all.

The Walrus put it plainly: Avi Lewis wants to save the planet, and it’s tearing his own party apart (The Walrus). That’s not a punchline I invented. That’s the headline the NDP’s own sympathizers wrote.

Janis Irwin and the “Fascist Pancakes” Circus

Then there’s the rhetoric the part that tells you what the party actually rewards. In mid-July, a protester confronted Premier Danielle Smith at the K-Days Premier’s Breakfast in Edmonton, asking whether “the Epstein class” would protect her and repeatedly calling her a “fascist” before storming off shouting an obscenity-laced reference to her pancakes (Juno News). It went viral within hours.

Instead of letting an unhinged confrontation fade away, sitting elected New Democrats jumped in to amplify it. Edmonton MP Heather McPherson posted a video of herself sipping from a mug bearing the slogan. Edmonton-Highlands-Norwood MLA Janis Irwin referenced the “fascist pancakes” line in her own pancake-breakfast social media post.

Think about what that actually is: an elected legislator, entrusted to represent her constituents at the Alberta Legislature, cheerfully rebranding a duly elected premier as a fascist for flipping pancakes at a summer fair. Not a policy critique. Not a rebuttal on the merits of any bill. A meme. A mug. A dunk for engagement. It’s a perfect distillation of what modern NDP politics has become at every level: less about crafting an alternative to govern with, more about who can land the spiciest clip before lunch.

The Pattern: Governing by Outrage, Not by Plan

Look at these three stories side by side and the pattern is impossible to miss. Nenshi bends to whoever yells loudest, then apologizes for photographs. Lewis wins the federal leadership by promising ideological purity, and immediately sets off a civil war with the very provincial leaders he needs to rebuild the party. Irwin, and colleagues like McPherson, treat comparing a sitting premier to a fascist as a marketing opportunity rather than a serious accusation that cheapens the word for people who’ve actually lived under one.

None of this is happening in a vacuum, either it’s happening while the federal party sits at seven seats, one short of official status, and while the provincial party’s own leader can’t crack 20 percent approval. This isn’t a party in a rough patch. It’s a party where the internal incentives now reward outrage over outcomes, and the results show up in the polls, the party in-fighting, and the headlines its own allies are writing. Jack Layton spent his career convincing Canadians the NDP could be trusted with the concerns of working people. His successors seem more interested in convincing each other who can out-perform whom on social media.

To be fair, NDP supporters would frame a lot of this differently. They’d say Nenshi’s apology reflects listening to a hurting community rather than “caving,” that Lewis’s climate platform is a principled response to an existential crisis rather than radicalism, and that calling out a premier’s policies however bluntly is exactly what opposition politicians and protesters are supposed to do in a democracy. Those are legitimate arguments, and readers should weigh them. But legitimate motives don’t change the visible result: a federal party still rebuilding from historic losses, a provincial leader whose own sympathetic press is questioning his future, and elected officials who reach for “fascist” as a punchline before they reach for a policy paper.

Why I’m Proud to Be a Conservative

I didn’t need to invent any of this. It’s in the party’s own polling, its own leaders’ public statements, and its own MLAs’ social media accounts. When the opposition spends more energy on hashtags, apologies, and internal turf wars than on a coherent plan for affordability, energy, or healthcare, voters notice and they should.

That’s exactly why I’m proud to be a Conservative. Say what you want about the party, but Conservatives are focused on the fundamentals: jobs, responsible budgets, energy development, and public safety not on manufacturing the next viral outrage cycle. Canadians, and Albertans especially, deserve leaders who show up to do the boring, difficult work of governing, not the ones who are best at going viral.

The NDP, federally and provincially, has a choice to make: get serious, or keep feeding the dumpster fire. Based on the last few months, I wouldn’t bet on the former.

Fiscal conservatism starts from a simple premise: tariffs whoever imposes them are taxes on consumers and businesses, not on foreign governments. Judge Mark Carney’s response by that standard, and the picture gets a lot less flattering.

What Trump’s New 50 Percent Tariffs on Canada Actually Cover

On July 20–21, 2026, President Trump announced additional tariffs of up to 50 percent on a range of Canadian exports, invoking Section 338 of the 1930 Tariff Act a provision allowing punitive tariffs against trading partners the White House deems “discriminatory.” The stated grievances: Canada’s removal of American alcohol from store shelves, preferential treatment for EU dairy imports, and caps on U.S.-made vehicles from companies that relocated production domestically. The White House also pointed to the $46.4 billion U.S. goods trade deficit with Canada in 2025.

The tariffs, effective 30 days after announcement, hit close to $20 billion in Canadian imports roughly 5.2 percent of the $382 billion in total U.S. imports from Canada in 2025 covering wine, cement, dairy, furniture, swimming pools, fishing rods, hockey equipment, clothing, seeds, and wigs. Oil, gas, critical minerals, and potash are exempted. Carney called the move a violation of CUSMA. (Al Jazeera)

Trump owns this tariff. It’s a tax his own consumers and Canadian exporters will both feel. But a fiscal conservative doesn’t stop the analysis there the question is whether Ottawa’s response makes the tax burden on Canadians bigger or smaller.

“Everything’s on the Table” Is Not a Fiscal Plan

At a July 23, 2026 meeting with the premiers, Carney pledged to “do whatever it takes to defend and support our families, our workers, and our business,” and said Canada is in a “stronger position” than 18 months ago. He did not announce specific counter-tariffs or a costed retaliation package. (CP24; Bloomberg)

For a self-described fiscal hawk who spent a career at the Bank of Canada, Bank of England, and Brookfield warning about the discipline markets demand, “everything’s on the table” is a strikingly undisciplined answer. Premiers, including Ontario’s Doug Ford, are pushing for an “aggressive” negotiating posture on softwood lumber, steel, aluminum, and autos while demanding Ottawa actually show its work. That’s the right instinct. Retaliatory tariffs matched dollar-for-dollar against a $46.4 billion deficit aren’t a serious economic strategy against an economy roughly 13 times the size of ours there a way to make Canadian importers, and the consumers who buy from them, pay a second tax on top of the first. A fiscally conservative response asks a harder question than “what do we hit back with.” It asks: what does this cost Canadian taxpayers, and does it actually change U.S. behaviour, or just signal toughness at their expense?

Ottawa Doesn’t Have the Fiscal Room for a Spending War

Here’s the part fiscal conservatives should be shouting about: Canada is trying to fight this trade war from a position of federal balance-sheet weakness that Ottawa built for itself.

The Carney government’s first budget projects a $78.3 billion deficit for the current fiscal year nearly double the $42.2 billion the previous Trudeau government had planned, and larger than any Trudeau-era deficit outside the 2020–22 pandemic years. It’s in the same range as Stephen Harper’s 2009/10 recession deficit of $56.4 billion, despite Canada not being in a comparable recession. Interest payments alone on federal debt are projected to hit $76.1 billion by 2029/30 more than Ottawa plans to spend on health-care transfers to the provinces that year. (Fraser Institute)

Baked into that budget is roughly $89.7 billion in new spending explicitly framed as a response to U.S. protectionism industrial subsidies, trade-diversification programs, and support packages for affected sectors.

That’s the actual “retaliation plan” taking shape: not disciplined counter-pressure on Washington, but a wave of new federal spending, financed by more borrowing, layered on top of a deficit already the largest in Canadian peacetime history. From a fiscally conservative lens, that’s not resilience it’s Ottawa asking future taxpayers to cover the bill for a trade fight the current government helped set up.

Nearly 11 Years of Anti-Growth Policy Left Canada With No Cushion

None of this fiscal exposure happened by accident. The Liberal government Trudeau from November 2015, Carney since March 14, 2025 has governed for close to 11 years, and the policy record over that period is a case study in why Canada walked into this tariff fight with so little leverage.

Major energy and resource projects were cancelled, stalled, or abandoned: Energy East, Northern Gateway, and Keystone XL among them, alongside the 2018 federal nationalization of the Trans Mountain expansion after private capital walked away rather than navigate the regulatory environment. Industry estimates put the cumulative value of cancelled or suspended resource projects since 2015 at roughly $670 billion. (Fraser Institute; EnergyNow)

Layer on top of that a domestic tax and regulatory environment that has grown steadily less competitive with the United States. The Canadian Federation of Independent Business estimates the total cost of regulatory compliance across all three levels of government at $38.8 billion a year, with small businesses paying roughly $7,023 per employee in compliance costs versus $1,237 per employee at large firms a fivefold gap that hits the small exporters least able to absorb a new tariff shock. Add it up: fewer pipelines, less capital investment, higher regulatory costs, a weaker tax position, and heading into 2026 a federal balance sheet already stretched by the largest deficit outside a pandemic. That’s not the profile of a country built to withstand a trade shock. It’s the profile of a country that made itself maximally exposed to one, then tried to answer it with more borrowing.

Who Actually Pays for “Everything’s on the Table”?

If Ottawa’s response ends up being matching counter-tariffs plus tens of billions in new deficit-financed spending, the bill lands on ordinary Canadians from multiple directions at once. Businesses importing American inputs pay more immediately and pass costs to consumers. Households pay more at the till on both sides of the tariff fight Trump’s tariffs raise what Canada earns selling into the U.S., Ottawa’s counter-tariffs raise what Canadians pay buying from the U.S., and neither compares to the deficit spending required to fund a subsidy response. And taxpayers eventually cover $76 billion a year in debt-service costs regardless of which sector the subsidies flowed to.

A fiscally conservative alternative looks different: fast-track pipeline and export-infrastructure approvals so Canada isn’t a one-customer economy; cut the regulatory drag costing businesses $38.8 billion a year; close the tax competitiveness gap with the U.S. so capital stops leaving; and treat retaliatory tariffs as a last resort rather than a first instinct, since every tariff Canada imposes is a tax Ottawa collects from Canadians, not from Washington.

A Fair Counterpoint

To be fair to the government’s position: Carney’s team argues that some new spending is a necessary bridge for workers and industries facing an externally imposed shock, and that Canada is negotiating from a stronger position after 18 months of courting new trading partners. There’s also a reasonable case that a portion of the investment lost since 2015 reflects global capital and commodity-price trends beyond any one government’s control, not purely domestic policy failure. Fiscally conservative critics would counter that bridge financing has a way of becoming permanent spending, and that a $78.3 billion deficit is a strange foundation from which to claim fiscal strength but the debate is a legitimate one, not a settled one.

The Real Question for Canadians

Trump’s tariffs are Trump’s. But nearly 11 years of stalled pipelines, rising red tape, a widening tax gap with the U.S., and now the largest peacetime deficit in Canadian history are Ottawa’s. A retaliation plan built on more tariffs and more borrowed spending doesn’t fix that exposure — it taxes Canadians twice while doing nothing to close the competitiveness gap that got Canada here.

So when Mark Carney says “everything’s on the table,” is that fiscal discipline and strength or is it a government reaching for the same borrow-and-spend playbook that helped create the vulnerability in the first place?

There’s a photograph making the rounds this week that tells you almost everything you need to know about where Alberta politics is headed this fall. A row of Treaty chiefs, resplendent in full headdress, stand on the steps of the Alberta Legislature. The headline above them: “Alberta First Nations intend to ‘rock the vote’ against separatism.”

It’s a striking image, and it announces a serious political effort. But it also raises a question that Alberta’s chattering class would rather not ask out loud: when a leadership group representing a single-digit share of the province’s population organizes to swing the outcome of a province-wide vote, who exactly is speaking for whom?

That is not a rhetorical cheap shot. It’s the actual structure of what’s unfolding ninety-some days before Albertans go to the polls.

What’s Actually Happening

According to Legacy Media, First Nations leaders in Alberta are preparing to replicate a “Rock the Vote”-style mobilization campaign aimed squarely at defeating the province’s separation question this October. It’s the latest and most organized escalation in a months-long standoff between Alberta’s Treaty leadership and Premier Danielle Smith’s government over the road to the referendum.

Here’s the timeline conservatives following this story need to know:

• May 2025: Smith’s government amended Alberta’s Citizen Initiative Act, sharply lowering the signature threshold required to force a referendum question onto the ballot. The separatist advocacy group Stay Free Alberta seized the opening and claimed roughly 300,000 signatures in support of an independence vote.

• May 13, 2026: Alberta’s Court of King’s Bench struck down the original petition, ruling that separatist organizers had failed to properly consult Indigenous peoples as required under Section 35 of the Constitution Act — the provision protecting existing treaty rights. Smith called the ruling wrong-headed but restructured the ballot question to move forward anyway.

• June 2026: The Assembly of Treaty Chiefs escalated further, formally asking the RCMP to investigate whether the referendum drive itself amounts to treason. Smith fired back that the “overwrought language has no place in a democracy,” called the accusation “disgraceful,” and told the chiefs to “check themselves” — while noting she had publicly supported First Nations’ own parallel push for a renegotiated relationship with Ottawa and expected the same respect in return.

• October 19, 2026: Albertans now head to the polls on a reworked question asking whether the province should remain part of Canada, or whether the Smith government should begin the constitutional process toward a binding separation referendum.

Public opinion, for what it’s worth, currently favours staying in Canada by a wide margin. An Angus Reid Institute survey taken May 22–24 found 60% of Albertans would vote to remain, versus 35% who’d back moving toward a separation referendum, with 5% undecided a 25-point spread. In other words, the “Rock the Vote” campaign isn’t chasing a photo finish. It’s organizing against a separatist movement that, per the best available public polling, is already losing.

That’s the detail that ought to reframe this entire story for conservative readers.

The Math Behind the Headline

Alberta’s 2021 Census recorded roughly 284,000 people who identify as Indigenous First Nations, Métis, and Inuit combined out of a provincial population that has since grown past 4.9 million. That works out to a little under 7% of Albertans overall, and the First Nations share specifically the population most directly represented by Treaty Chiefs and the leadership pictured on those legislature steps is smaller still, in the neighbourhood of the “5%” figure that’s been circulating in commentary on this story.

To be clear about what that number does and doesn’t prove: it is not an argument that Indigenous Albertans have no stake in this vote, or that their leaders have no right to campaign, organize, and speak. They have exactly the same right to political speech as every other Albertan and every other advocacy organization in the province the Alberta Federation of Labour, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, the oil and gas sector, all of them lobby and organize too. Nobody serious disputes that.

What the number does illustrate is the asymmetry conservatives instinctively bristle at: a court, at the request of a leadership body representing a fraction of the electorate, was able to strike down a citizen-led petition that had already cleared a democratically lowered signature threshold before a single ballot was cast. That is a different thing from persuasion. Persuasion is what “Rock the Vote” is. A judicial veto on procedural consultation grounds is something else, and it’s the something else that should worry anyone who believes referendum questions ought to be settled by voters, not by which side can better navigate the courts.

Direct Democracy vs. Institutional Gatekeeping

This is the pattern conservative voters have watched play out again and again, from equalization referendums to carbon-tax challenges to now this: a populist, citizen-initiated push toward a ballot question, followed by a legal or institutional intervention that changes the terms before voters ever weigh in. Smith’s government didn’t invent the referendum process it lowered the bar to make citizen initiatives more accessible, which is the kind of small-d democratic reform conservatives generally applaud. That the very first major test of the lowered threshold ran into a courtroom is, at minimum, worth scrutinizing on the merits, separate from what anyone thinks about separatism itself.

You don’t have to support Alberta independence plenty of conservatives don’t, including much of Smith’s own caucus to think the process by which that question gets decided matters. The instinct behind “Rock the Vote” campaigns, get-out-the-vote drives, town halls, op-eds is healthy and exactly how democracies are supposed to resolve contested questions. The instinct behind pre-emptively narrowing what voters are even allowed to vote on is the one that deserves the tougher questions.

The Treason Accusation Backfire

If there’s a single moment that crystallized how far the rhetorical temperature has risen, it’s the Assembly of Treaty Chiefs’ request that the RCMP investigate the referendum campaign as potential treason. Smith’s response “this kind of overwrought language has no place in a democracy” will land with a lot of Albertans, and not only conservative ones, as simple common sense. Disagreeing with a referendum, even disagreeing strongly, is not treason. Calling it that doesn’t strengthen an argument; it signals that the argument’s proponents think the underlying case can’t win on persuasion alone.

That matters for the “Rock the Vote” push specifically. A get-out-the-vote campaign grounded in the actual merits economic risk, constitutional uncertainty, treaty obligations, the practical costs of separation is a legitimate and potentially persuasive contribution to the fall campaign. Pairing it with treason accusations against a sitting premier and a governing party risks discrediting the whole effort as overreach, and gives separatist organizers a grievance narrative they otherwise wouldn’t have.

Why This Fight Is Bigger Than Alberta

Strip away the specifics and this is a preview of a fight conservatives across the country are going to keep having: who gets to trigger a democratic process, who gets to slow it down once triggered, and whether “consultation” requirements however constitutionally grounded become a durable check on citizen initiatives generally. Western alienation didn’t appear out of nowhere; it’s the product of a couple generations of Albertans feeling that federal and often judicial institutions overrule regional majorities. Whatever you think of the separatist case itself, a referendum campaign that gets rerouted through the courts before voters weigh in is going to reinforce that grievance, not settle it.

The Other Side of the Argument

In fairness to the Treaty Chiefs and the Rock the Vote organizers, their position rests on more than headcount, and it deserves to be stated plainly rather than waved off. Section 35 treaty rights aren’t a matter of opinion poll math they’re constitutionally entrenched obligations the Crown owes to specific treaty nations, negotiated well before Alberta existed as a province, and Canadian courts have consistently held that governments must consult affected First Nations before taking actions that could affect those rights, regardless of what share of the general population those nations represent. From that vantage point, “5% versus 95%” is the wrong frame entirely: treaty nations aren’t simply a demographic voting bloc competing for influence, they’re parties to nation-to-nation agreements, and the King’s Bench ruling turned on that legal relationship, not on democratic weight. Why This Is Suddenly a Real Vote, Not Just a Talking Point

Alberta separatism has existed in various forms for decades, usually as a frustrated undercurrent rather than an actual ballot measure. That changed this year. On October 19, 2026, Albertans will vote on the question:

“Should Alberta remain a province of Canada or should the Government of Alberta commence the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada?”

That question exists because of a citizen-initiated petition process. The Stay Free Alberta campaign drove the push, and organizers reported gathering roughly 300,000 signatures.
