Billie and I are in Coronado, heading to LA Sunday for a couple of nights with Uncle Andy where he wants to take Billie to see Coyote vs. Acme before we come back here to round out the week. So far, I’ve spent a decent amount of time hunting mosquitos (hi, it’s me) but failing on a good solution (tried this, this- which usually works, this and now thought I brought in the big guns with this but, alas, no). My dad is mad that this means we have to keep the doors closed which currently in Southern California means we have to keep the AC on (taboo!). I finished John of John which I clearly should have read while in Scotland, but my dad got it– albeit in large print format (kind of weird but fine?)- from the library here, so I waited. I just started a beach read while Tom Perrotta’s Ghost Town or another Jordan Harper book are up next. My dad is excited to make a batch of blintzes with us over the weekend (he even made my mom order a new pan!), but I’m more excited for Magnolia Bakery’s famous cupcakes or a chocolate chip cookie donut loaf. We’ve been subsisting on tacos (from here), but my mom thinks it’s important we go out to a real meal every once in a while so we are supposed to try Night Hawk at the Baby Grand Hotel too.

A weird story about art ownership and theft. If we were in NYC, where we’d be noshing this weekend. In case you’re watching House of Dragons this is fun. Get one video per day. And maybe I should reset Billie’s sleep schedule for back-to-school in less than two weeks?

This weekend finds us home in New York in between a great trip to Scotland and the last throes of summer out in Coronado. I still have to do a bunch of laundry, but that won’t stop us from seeing friends- including some just back from two years in Paris (!) and others who are almost-but-not-quite-moved-back post a very long renovation in NYC. I’m pretty sure I can convince Billie to stroll to Chelsea Market for a perfect strawberry, but I’m not convinced she will join me for dinner (though a spinning room should be a selling point). She’s also probably too young to see Anne Hathaway fend off dinosaurs though I might take her to see it anyway (ack, bad parenting?) even though this charming escape is decidedly more appropriate.

We won’t be here to see an Elvis Presley movie at Bryant Park Monday or take advantage of US Open Fan week (maybe Kids Day?). But US Open time is some of the best times in NYC so if you’re here, welcome and I hope the weather holds. I’m currently reading Dog Stars (in preparation for the movie) with The Children on deck. Billie demands to know which My Little Pony character are you and is very excited for the Hello Kitty x Godzilla Happy Meal that her grandparents will surely take her for next week. In case you’re worried your emojis are making you old, you can course correct here. I loved these ghosts of gardens past. And fried chicken but surprise!

Billie and I are in Scotland. We flew here overnight Wednesday and let me tell you I’m glad my favorite jet lag kits are now available in mini-me sizing. The highlights in Peebles so far include: playing yard chess, seeing a water aerobics class set to techno in the same indoor pool as a bunch of shouting kids, getting through the Traquair maze, and hanging with sheep, pigs, ducks, chickens, and alpacas. The lowlights include: getting turned away at our air rifles reservation because you have to be eight. Tomorrow, we are heading to Edinburgh with a quick stop along the way for a treetops excursion where Billie will fly solo because she told me she has lots of self confidence and I should wait for her on the ground. Once in Edinburgh, we plan to see the inspiration for Diagon Alley (she’s still reading book four), visit Greyfriars Bobby (and rub his nose), hit up Golden Hare Books (there should always be a bookstore stop), eat at soon-to-be-in-NYC-Dishoom (unless you have another recommendation– we are taking them) and overnight on a boat.

Sunday, we make a stop at Stirling Castle and rendezvous with one of my childhood friends who now lives in Scotland. From there, we head to Loch Lomond (sadly, not the loch where Nessie resides) in the Highlands and park ourselves at Cameron House where we go on a different boat (this one moves), do some off-roading, experience falconry and visit an enchanted forest. In any downtime we have, we will see Spiderman: A Brand New Day (our hotel also has a movie theater?) and I’ll finish reading A Violent Masterpiece and start The Calamity Club while Billie will read again-and-again the latest Warriors graphic novel.

Billie had her first overnight at camp (!) last night and I’m anticipating elation and exhaustion, followed by excitement when I pick her up with one of my best friend’s two teenage girls in tow who are going to hang with her for the evening. I’m heading to a birthday party on a boat and hoping it doesn’t thunderstrom (though, the party planners have reassured us that there is an indoors to this barge so no worries).

Tomorrow, we are going to MOMA Family Day and then will walk home, at least part of the way, via Summer Streets. She doesn’t weigh enough to zipline at the Foley Square Summer Streets Rest Stop (60lbs minimum) though she can probably do some damage at the NYFF Dunk Booth at the 40th/Park Rest Stop. She has a playdate later that afternoon and I might swing by the NoMad Jazz Festival Food Market. I think I’ll skip the egg themed one but you do you. Sunday, Billie has a friend coming over and I’m going to read None of This is True by Lisa Jewell. And it is true that my reading has also taken a hit this week because my parents are obsessed with Landman and now I’m also obsessed with Landman. But also planning to see Furious, not because I heard it’s good (maybe it is?) but because my friends hired out their apartment as part of the set.

Next week, I’m going to pop in (with a ticket, thank god) to Pastel, contemplate who in my life needs a hot dog cake and jet to Scotland with Billie (more on that in the next digest!). We’re sad (but really, are we sad?) to miss camping in Central Park and sad (but again, are we really sad?) that we don’t have room in our apartment for a MetroCard machine. Play where and when in the world does this artifact belong, be amazed by the sun (even when you’re annoyed by the weather), and if you have an upcoming road trip involving the state of Ohio then now you have a must-see-destination.

Today, I’m picking Billie up from Camp Yomi, in Orangeburg, NY so we can zoom out of town for the weekend. She usually takes the bus back and forth and always conks out for a snooze so hoping she will still do that in a car. We’re heading to Sharon, CT to stay with friends - one of Billie’s best friends- from the neighborhood. They’re excited to swim and talk about dragons, but I also snagged some tie dye accoutrements and crafty kits (this and this) in case they get bored. I’m planning to kill time (because I’m planning to leave here early and have an hour to spare) at the IKEA marketplace because why not. On the way there/back we will stop at the Wassiac Project to explore the seven story grain elevator turned gallery and love to see that Molly Gochman’s Monument to Motherhood landed there (she’s a very close friend of my cousin, Ron). Of course there will be a bookstore stop and maybe a dose of peace and quiet at this garden. I don’t think the opening hours at Pam’s Bun and Run jive with our driving times but I wish they did because it’s a hot dog summer after all.

Back in the city, it’s Summer Streets in Manhattan on Saturday and Mary’s Fish Camp is back(!). I’m currently reading Culpability (with The Calamity Club on deck) while Billie is reading Kat Loves Dog. You can never have too much Devil Wears Prada 2 in your life and, of course, who’s not excited for Ted Lasso Season 4 on Wednesday.

In random food news, if you’re in Spain, a fried chicken and pink donut sandwich with bacon, of course. I’m going to pick up these chocolate sardines which would probably pair nicely with this peanut butter floor and a cold Diet Coke + Limoncello.

This weekend, Billie and I don’t have many plans, but we do have lots to do. We will start with enchiritos (only today it seems). And move on to public art including, but never limited to: a confetti-shooting hot dog sculpture, glowing seesaws in Herald Square, and the bead maze in Union Square. The new NYC sidewalk sheds are kind of like public art? Maybe Mamdani will be inspired by these fruit-shaped bus stops in Japan next. We probably won’t go to Pokemon Day Out, but I did buy tickets to see The Odyssey next week after much discussion with my brother, who is quite opinionated on the topic. He told me there are only a few theaters worth seeing it in and luckily two of those are in NYC; one is sold out including middle of the night viewings as far out as their calendar allows and the other is close by and still had some seats. I’m planning my bathroom break, brushing up on my Greek mythology, and can’t wait for my popcorn bucket (the horse that launched a thousand snacks, clearly).

In other weekend activities, we are going to not listen to the box with this cake mix hack (maybe we’ll bake it, maybe we’ll just watch it over and over), attempt to cool Willie with winter melons, I’m going to finish my current read, Anxious People, figure out why Esprit chose this moment to make a comeback and how to get my hands on a green one, and retrain myself to say “search it up” rather than “google that.”

This weekend, Billie and I (and the rest of NYC along with a large swath of the midwest and northeast) are very much hoping the smoke subsides, even though it very much seems like tomorrow will be a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day (also cheers if you know what book that’s from!). Lots of indoor activities (because outdoor ones have already been cancelled) to avoid the rain and the smoke like climbing or fancy footwork. If the weather keeps us closer to home, I’m just starting Whistler for my book club next week (cutting it a little close!) and Billie can keep diving into Harry Potter. I might check out The Long Walk after bedtime because I vividly remember reading it in my teens while Billie will cast her family movie night vote for the new Descendents Disney flick (and I will suck it up trying to play NYTimes on my phone when she’s not looking).

Sunday, we will definitely be watching the final match of the World Cup at the watch party on the Great Lawn in Central Park. We might swing by Lincoln Center Create-athon beforehand to make a cardboard foosball table (but seriously, I’ll have to carry this around after!?!?) and if it’s too hot, we might head indoors and watch the match under the blue whale.

This weekend, we continue to hold the heat wave at bay. Saturday, we are bummed to miss one of our favorite activities: Art Sundae with Hank Willis Thomas (zero tickets left) so instead we will enjoy some of the West Side Fest with fan screenprinting, checking out David Lamelas’ The Machine and printing with distemper (I didn’t know what that was until I read the description). We will likely end our day at the Natural History Museum’s block party where you can catch Saturday’s World Cup match between Norway and England (who doesn’t love Haaland?!) and a great view of Manhattanhenge. Back up plan in case we decide not to venture uptown: tthe NYC Math Festival guaranteed to add up (ha!) to a good time.

Sunday, I’d like to take Billie to see Toy Story 5, even though she insists we cannot because she hasn’t seen 1, 2, 3 or 4 yet (and maybe she’s right?). Post-weekend, I’m taking a mid-week quick road trip with friends to the Brimfield Antique Flea Market, a bucket list item even that will require great snacks and playlists (maybe these GAP playlists? they were magic) even though we are bound to arrive ill-prepared, going without a large enough vehicle (pretty sure U-Haul size is the only size)and too few rechargeable personal fans. The latter, we can remedy via amazon, but the former will force us to make some tough shopping decisions (read: textiles, art, parakeet ceramics; not: Scandinavian table and chairs, maybe an armoire).

I’m currently reading American Fantasy, Billie is onto the fourth Harry Potter (and possibly my favorite), and I have my work cut out to convince her to read one of my childhood faves (and a classic), Little House on the Prarie, before we watch the new Netflix version. Billie recommends turning your kid (or yourself) into a World Cup sticker and I recommend checking out the Gerhard Richter exhibit at David Zwirner.

We’re in Coronado, California with my family this weekend, unintentionally but very happily avoiding the NYC heat wave and Taylor’s wedding. We might miss Circumnavigation tonight which we’ve been doing for 15+ years. It’s when a mob of bicycles and their riders circumnavigates Coronado “island” dressed in their 4th of July best. It used to be whoever showed up and we’d hope traffic stopped for us to pass (it did), but now it’s more by the books with police and an official route. Tomorrow, for the Fourth, there will be burger and flag cookies, Billie will see Minions and Monsters with her Uncle Andy (or the third Harry Potter movie if she can quickly finish the book!), we will go by Urt for new swag, see if Myka Coronado has opened yet because we refuse to wait in line for frozen yogurt in NYC, I’ll read my current book Ruins, and take the pups (three of them currently in residence here) to dog beach.

For summer, everyone needs a picnic table boat. I have never seen Love Island but found this fascinating. Bad Bunny maybe missed his calling as a manny. And if you’ve never read one of these books a hundred times, you’re missing out.

Billie finished second grade today aka I officially have a third grader on my hands. This weekend, my mom is in town to hang out with Billie and celebrate the end of the school year (here, to start). I, on the other hand, am in Bermuda for a very good friend’s wedding that started with a piano bar welcome party last night where the bride played Piano Man and even brought her own harmonica and a catamaran ride this morning. I couldn’t let Billie and my mom have all the frozen yogurt fun, so ate here (best name ever: Yo Cherry) for lunch. I fly home Sunday and collect my mom and Billie and Willie (of course) and ferry them to the airport to fly to San Diego for the week. Billie will be swimming– she’s still hell bent on being on Survivor and I’ve convinced her that acing freestyle is a precursor. We will eat at the Garage and the Tavern, read on the front porch, and we will certainly eat our fair share of paletas. My dad and brother are saying a prayer that the local movie theater is not actually closing aka we will be there when we are not watching the World Cup.

I’m currently tucked into a very summery read (White Lotus meets We Crashed) and have Widow’s Bay queued up to stream on my Sunday flights. As you prepare for the 250th anniversary of America, I wish you luck in finding one of the limited edition quarters and avoiding swarms of bees.

Today, since Billie didn’t have school, she went to a mini camp at Genius Gems (cracks me up that her picture’s on that page) with a friend and I’m picking her up shortly so we can watch the US vs. Australia match. Hard to believe I was in LA for the opener this time last week (scroll down here for the Viner siblings)!

Tonight I’m seeing Disclosure Day on the UWS with pre-movie meatballs. Tomorrow, Billie has a bday party in the morning which means I can go to pilates. Later, we will head to Good Heart Art’s friends and family opening in the neighborhood– keep this one on your list for kid’s art classes and parties. If we didn’t have a packed day, we’d either try for the Mermaid Parade or the Clixo play-a-thon (some of our favorite toys). Sunday, we are going to try to hit up this World Cup watch party (tickets pending) and cap our day at Shukette (because it’s been a while). I’m currently reading More Than Enough while Billie is onto the third Harry Potter (and we started watching the second movie last night!).

We might be as excited to see the vikings row as we are to head to New Jersey Monday evening for the Norway vs. Senegal match. And since this week’s digest has mostly been about the World Cup anyway, see the Scots in Boston, World Cup visitors trying American food, and read this to get (even more) excited.

The World Cup has arrived and this is the best primer for getting the vibes right. I spent the first half of Wednesday’s Knicks game gluing red, white and blue rhinestones onto the back of this jacket, then perched an eagle on top aka proper attire for someone currently en route to LA for the US Opening Ceremonies and the USA vs. Paraguay opener. Of course, I also packed the right Stan Smiths to mark the occassion. I’d suggest you gear up here or grab a jersey here, especially if you’re planning to enter the lottery for the World Cup Finals watch party in Central Park. Billie is fired up too, but currently to collect Panini World Cup stickers (apparently, there is a right way to afix them).

I fly home tomorrow (quick trip) in time to catch the Knicks. I wasn’t lucky enough to grab a Zabar’s blue and orange hat (maybe you were?), but Billie will be channeling Taylor soon in a Stevie Knicks t-shirt. All of NYC seems to have gone very superstituous aka here and here; maybe it’s because the Spurs seem to have nuns on their side? When the Knicks take it in five (!), here’s hoping the treats homage doesn’t disappear too quickly. Sunday, we head to the Upper Eastside to see Clinamen at the Park Avenue Armory; what I anticipate will be much needed calm to reset for the week.

NYC is turning the heat up (literally) for the Knicks game two this evening. My dad grew up in San Antonio so this should be a harder decision for me, but I don’t own any Spurs gear so that settled that. If you’re getting out your knickerbockers and need a place to watch the game (aka your daughter isn’t going to fall asleep before half-time so you’re going out), this is great to figure out where or you clearly can’t go wrong with the watch party inside or outside at MSG though I did just pass hundreds (!) of police officers getting ready.

Tomorrow, after we’ve recovered from the game, we have a graduation brunch in Brooklyn, a playdate in Chelsea and, as it will be too hot for us to go to Roosevelt Island Day, maybe we will hit Uncanny Valley at the Museum of Art and Design, do a quick drive-by (subway-by, really) for Ghostbusters Day, or, even though, Billie absolutely does not want to, go to NYC Math Day (it is indoors, so still plausible). Sunday, she has two birthday parties and so we will shop for a gift for the second after the first (already tackled that one!). I’ll finish my current read- Tana French’s newest book The Keeper- while Billie is deep into the second Harry Potter and my book club is deep into the Belle Burden saga (catch up here and here).

I hope these don’t disappear. Billie will like this list for summer (as I queue up Troop Beverly Hills). Coming off of an auto-immune flare, I’m excited to try these. And, to this, just hallelujah.

We’re on the road again this weekend, heading to Ann Arbor for my cousin’s eldest son’s Bar Mitzvah. Billie is sad to miss the “I” in the alphabet countdown to the last day of school (yes, NYC public schools go on forever) aka ice cream, but she’s very excited to see her family. Not to mention, the data proves that it does, in fact, rain more in NYC on the weekends– so good to escape just in case. Speaking of weather, we will check for a Rothko that matches when we land. When we are not at Bar Mitzvah related activities, I’ll read my current book These Summer Storms, we’ll visit Zingerman’s Deli and Zingerman’s Next Door (former for deli goods, latter for coffee and breakfast!) and, of course, Literati Books.

I wish I had this rad suitcase for our trip, even though Billie would likely claim it as her own. We are sad to miss Manhattanhenge and the New York City Opera at Bryant Park tonight. But maybe next week we will catch this giant reading party there on Monday or join me Tuesday to see my old crossfit coach perform a little cabaret.

Billie and I are heading to Vermont for the weekend for a friend’s milestone birthday (aka whoa we are getting old). Plan is to drive part way tonight and then wake up early in the morning and head to Woodstock, Vermont to visit family. They’ve requested black and whites, but also have this and this in tow. We’ll also spend time at their cheese factory, Plymouth Cheese and I can’t decide who’s more excited, Billie or me. In the afternoon, we will head to the festivities in Manchester and check into the Equinox Hotel (not the NYC Equinox Hotel), diving into (pun intended) Billie’s favorite hotel activity: swimming. We’re planning to visit Northshire Bookstore (the best kind of store), the Orvis flagship (apparently there are fish?!) and Pastime Pinball. The weather does not look great Sunday, but if we get a window, we might try for a quick hike at the Equinox Preserve. Monday, we have brunch and then will buckle up for the drive back to NYC.

Billie is almost finished with the first Harry Potter, so I might pick that up when she’s done since it’s been a while. I’m contemplating an episode or two of Off Campus and think maybe Remarkably Beautiful Creatures would be a good movie to watch together (loved the book). I keep thinking it’s a laid back weekend, but I guess I’m just kidding myself. Tomorrow, Billie and I will hang near home in the morning, starting our day with a croissant pizza (what!?), a stop by our local library, and maybe popping by the Chelsea Green’s Spring Street Fair, Family Day at Hudson Yards, Penn South Coop’s Annual Flea Market or a bit further afield at Park Avenue Day (and this marine science festival looks awesome). In the afternoon, we will head to a Eurovision Grand Finals party in Brooklyn Heights, followed by dinner (maybe at Montague Diner which has been on my list to try when we venture off island). Sunday, Billie has a birthday party (that’s just a small playdate aka breath of fresh air) and I’m heading to a baby shower at La Casa de Las Flores. We will miss Funny Weather but maybe you’ll make it to the opening? Next week, I have my book club (which I’ve been in for 14+ years!) and am supposed to see Proof Wednesday. Next book to crack is Katabasis, Billie and I will watch GOAT, and she’s (finally) reading Harry Potter– probably because I promised her a trip to Harry Potter World if she reads it on her own.

Billie is getting her wish tomorrow: cermaics class. She missed this day at her art class at SVA (we were out of town) so I promised her a re-do. We’re then seeing The Sheep Detective Saturday evening which I honestly didn’t think was a movie we’d have to pre-buy tickets. Thank god I somehow decided to because it was sold out except for the front row. Up + Carnegie Hall at Hudson Yards is also on our list of activities, but not sure timing will work out this weekend (maybe you’ll go though?). Sunday our plans include a playdate at a park and opening Mother’s Day cards (love to all of you celebrating). Next week, Billie’s class is studying digestion, so I’m sending in our favorite book about the topic which must be sung to be delivered properly. I’m excited to see Fear of 13 on Broadway, currently reading Heartwood, and maybe I’ll watch Season 2 of Running Point or finally catch Season 3 of Shrinking.

This weekend, fun is on the horizon. Tonight, I’ll finish Strangers (halfway through; not sure about all the hype tbh) and listen to this seemingly perfect 90s playlist. Billie will likely demand we watch the current episode of Survivor. Tomorrow, Billie wants to go to the library, but maybe we will mix it up by going to the main location and check out the rooftop? In the afternoon, Billie has a playdate and I’ll head to the movies. A friend has rented out a theater to see Devil Wears Prada 2 and I’m hoping to score the special edition popcorn bucket (bag?). Later, I’m to don party appropriate attire for a friend’s forty-something-ish celebration at Nine Orchard where I’m also expected to stay awake until midnight (bless). Sunday, excited for Kid Fest at Pier 57 (but also this Monsters Everywhere create-athon at Lincoln Center looks awesome) and to sneak in a nap.

The forecast for the weekend is abysmal so we will enjoy being outside tonight (before the rain begins) at Yappy Hour with friends in the neighborhood. Tomorrow, before I head out for the evening for a bite at a revolving restaurant and then to see Schmigadoon with friends; I will try to prep with the tv show version too. I might also dive into my new book for my book club, but for our June gathering as the May book (Strangers) is seemingly sold out everywhere and I’m number 411 on the NYPL waitlist. We’ve gotten in the habit of choosing books a few months out and it’s been fun. And, speaking of books, how great is a line for people waiting for books!?

If Billie and I decide to brave the rain, we might take to the car free streets or run to the Gap for a little Victoria Beckham. Sunday, we will venture to Area 53 for a laser tag birthday party (one of Billie’s friends, in case that wasn’t clear) and maybe continue our interactive adventures at Complete Cafe (might need a screen detox after that one!). Next week, I’m excited to see Adeena Sussman for her new cookbook launch and maybe try out Goop Kitchen (or maybe wait until they get all the kinks worked out). Tomorrow, Billie has a “gallery” show to wrap up her spring art class at the School of Visual Arts where they decidedly didn’t make art with AI (phew) and we will celebrate, as per usually, with her favorite tacos. We might trek to Governors Island for Earth Day celebrations or stalk the lines while we wait for the perfect time to not queue. And Sunday, she has a playdate which means I maybe have a little free time on my hands so maybe I’ll figure out what Alix and Alex are fighting about because I definitely don’t get it.
