Posts 1-3 stayed in control of the dirt sprints, going 12-for-21 this past week, and they’re holding at 57% for the meet. This has been one of the clearest biases all of 2026 at Saratoga. Running style was more competitive last week. Early runners won 9 of 21 races, with stalkers right behind with eight wins. It is important to remember that early runners are winning 44% of dirt sprints.

The dirt routes had just four races last week, and stalkers won every one of them. They’re now up to 50% for the meet. Posts 1-3 continue to hold the post-position edge at 72%, still the strongest post bias anywhere at Saratoga. They were 3-for-4 this past week.

Closers have controlled the turf sprints, but last week was rough for them. They were just 1-for-7, but overall, they’re still winning 49% of races. Watch posts 1-3 closing week; they are coming off a 4-for-7 week.

Turf routes saw closers win 4 of 5 races this past week. They are now up to 59% for the meet, the highest win percentage they have had this year. Early speed continues to struggle here and is down to just a 9% clip.

Posts 1-3 have put together a few solid weeks in the inner turf routes. They are now winning 49% of races and are coming in off a 6-for-11 week. Closers have separated themselves too, winning 46% of races through the nine weeks. They were 5-for-11 last week.

Only two days run so far at Kentucky Downs, so everything below should be read as a first look, not as a true bias.

In the sprints, posts 1-3 had the strongest debut, winning 6 of 12 races. Posts 7+ were right behind, with four wins. Closers led the running styles with five wins, the most of any group. Early runners were right behind with four wins. What is interesting is that stalkers struggled, as expected. This is the same trend that you have seen over the past two years at Kentucky Downs.

The 1-turn routes leaned to the outside, with posts 7+ picking up 4 of 8 races. If you remember, last year, posts 7+ was the place to be. This could be what is developing again. Running style was evenly split, three wins apiece for early speed and closers, two for stalkers.

The 2-turn routes have only run twice so far, one win each for posts 4-6 and 7+, and one apiece for early speed and stalkers.

The dirt routes at Monmouth Park were controlled by the inside posts last week, going 4-for-7. They are winning 54% of races going into the final two weeks of racing. Early and stalking runners each won 3 of 7 races last week. They are both tied at 42% overall.

As even as a week could be in the dirt sprints, with each post group winning two races each. Early runners edged out the running styles, going 3-for-6.

57% of turf sprints have been won by early runners. Last week, they were 2-for-3. Posts 4-6 are winning 46% of races overall. However, last week, each post group won a race.

In the turf routes, stalkers have been controlling the profile. This past week, they were 0-for-4. Early runners and closers each won two races. They are lagging in the overall profile. Early runners are winning 27% of races, and closers are even worse, at 24%. Posts 1-3 also went winless this past week. Posts 4-6 and 7+ each won two races.

Posts 1-3 remain the clearest bias at Saratoga, winning 57% of dirt sprint races on the meet. Running style is more competitive. Early runners lead at 44%, with stalkers close behind at 33% and closers at 23%.

Post position offers the more reliable edge on this surface.

The dirt mile continues to favor posts 1-3, winning 57% of races, and early speed leads all running styles at 50%. Closers have struggled throughout the meet, down to just 7%. This remains one of the more consistent, reliable biases at the track.

Posts 1-3 are dominating in the dirt routes, winning 72% of races. Running style-wise, stalkers have controlled these races all meet, especially over the recent weeks. They are winning 50% of races.

Closers remain the top running style in the turf sprints at a 49% clip, the most dependable bias in this profile all meet. Post position is close to even across all three groups, with posts 4-6 holding a slight edge at 38%.

Closers have taken firm control of the turf routes, now winning 59% of races on the meet. Post position leans toward the middle, with posts 4-6 at 41%. Early speed has all but disappeared here, down to 9%. Any frontrunner should be viewed as vulnerable.

The inner turf routes show a similar closer bias at 46%. Posts 1-3 hold the post-position edge at 49%. Over the recent weeks, these inside runners have really separated themselves from the other two post groups.

There are tracks where you can start with the same handicapping assumptions you use everywhere else.

Kentucky Downs is not one of them.

The fields are bigger. The course is different. The ground is undulating. And the race distances create situations you don’t see at most American tracks. Most importantly, some of the things you normally want to see in a horse can work very differently here.

The standout example is post position.

At most tracks, drawing an outside post means giving up ground and potentially losing position. At Kentucky Downs, the profiles show the opposite. Posts 7+ have been the winningest post group in every profile in both 2024 and 2025.

It is a pattern that has continued across sprints, 1-turn routes, and 2-turn routes.

And once you start looking at Kentucky Downs through that lens, some of the other numbers begin to make more sense.

The running styles are different depending on the distance. Stalkers have struggled in the sprints while early speed and closers have dominated. The routes move in the other direction, with closers becoming much more important as the distance stretches.

Then there is the betting analysis.

Some of the most interesting numbers in this track profile primer aren’t simply about who wins the most races. They’re about which type of favorite you are looking at. A balanced favorite can look very different from a chaos favorite, and the difference becomes particularly important in the route profiles.

That’s what this primer is built to establish before the 2026 Kentucky Downs meet begins.

A starting point for understanding what Kentucky Downs has actually been doing, where the strongest patterns have appeared over the last two years, and which of those patterns are worth watching heading into this year’s meet.

Sprints

Post position is the main headline at Kentucky Downs in the sprints. Posts 7+ won 44% of races in 2025, outperforming posts 1-3 (25%) and posts 4-6 (31%). More importantly, it was not a one-year coincidence. In 2024, posts 7+ won 47% of sprints, with posts 1-3 winning just 18% of races.

After two years, the outside post group has been the most productive in Kentucky Downs sprints.

Running style leaned toward the front end both years. Early runners led at 50% in 2025, with closers at 36%. Stalkers won just 14% of races. In 2024, early runners hit at a 47% clip, with closers at 35%. Stalkers again brought up the rear at 18%.

Stalkers have been the weak link in back-to-back years in the sprints, which is notable. A lot of conventional track profiles don’t see the extremes of early and closing runners controlling the wins.

At Kentucky Downs, it is straightforward. Either look for a dominant early runner who can control the front, or be ready to find those closers when you project the pace to be contested early. Sitting just off the pace without committing either way has not worked.

Sprints Detailed Profile

Average field size in 2025 sprints was 10.94 runners, and 2024 was even fuller at 11.45 runners. With average fields over 10 runners, the outside post advantage is especially interesting. The profile clearly shows the result. Whether that comes from avoiding traffic, getting a less troubled trip, or something about how the course itself plays is something worth watching as the 2026 meet unfolds.

The 6.5 furlong distance carries the bulk of the sample in both years, 25 of 36 races in 2025 and 22 of 34 in 2024, and it is where the running style picture is most balanced.

In 2025, early runners won 13 of those races, and closers had 10 wins. Stalkers had just two wins. Winners at 6.5 furlongs, on average, were in 3.60 place and 1.78 lengths off the leader at the 2-furlong call, tightening to 3.48 in position and 1.24 lengths back at the second call. In 2024, the same distance showed a similar pattern. Early runners had 9 wins, and closers had 10. Stalkers struggled, getting just three wins. Winners were slightly further back at the first call. On average, they were in 4th place and 2 lengths off the leader before closing to 3.77 place and 1.61 lengths off the front at the second call.

Both years point to the same thing. 6.5 furlong winners are rarely far off the pace. They, on average, were in the front half of the pack by the 1st call.

The 6 and 7-furlong samples are smaller. Still, early runners were competitive at both shorter and longer sprint distances across both years, reinforcing that the forward running style holds up regardless of exact distance within the sprint profile.

Watch for those in posts 7+ at the 7-furlong distance. In 2024 and 2025, they were 4-for-6 at this distance.

Sprints Betting Analysis

The favorite’s win percentage was 25% in 2025, and 38.2% in 2024, but the more useful number is what happened when you broke it down by tote category rather than treating the board as one big picture.

In the chaos boards, where the favorite sits at 5/2 or higher, the sample sizes were healthy in both years, 14 races in 2025 and 13 in 2024.

The favorites’ win rate was slightly different: 21.4% in 2025 and 38.5% in 2024. But the standout number is ROI. In 2025, favorites in chaos sprints returned a flat-bet ROI of positive 58.4%, and in 2024 that number was positive 66.6%. That is a real signal across two years. Even in these wide-open sprint betting boards at Kentucky Downs, the public favorite has been offering solid value on the rare occasions it wins, likely because the crowded, competitive fields push true contenders’ odds higher than their actual win chances.

The monster favorite category, favorites with odds of 3/2 or lower, showed a different shape. In 2025, monster favorites won 27.3% of 11 races but placed in 81.8% of them. In 2024, monster favorites actually performed better on the win side at 66.7% of 6 races, though that is a small sample.

The place rate in 2025 is the number worth building around. An 81.8% place rate for monster favorites in sprints makes them a strong key underneath in exactas, looking to use value on top. Watching for that same pattern this year will be important to anyone looking to play exactas in these races.

The balanced board, 8/5 to 2/1, was where the favorite struggled most in 2025, winning just 3-of-9 races. In 2024, the balanced favorite won at just a 20% clip across a much larger sample of 15 races. Two years of data point in the same direction here. Balanced-board favorites in Kentucky Downs sprints are not a strong play, but the 2nd choice picked up meaningful ground in both years and deserves consideration as part of the ticket rather than as an afterthought.

1-Turn Routes

The 1-turn route profile produced the single largest post bias in this entire primer.

In 2025, posts 7+ won exactly half of all races, 50%, with posts 1-3 and 4-6 splitting the rest evenly at 25% each. That is a serious edge for a single post grouping, and it did not come out of nowhere. Average field size in 2025 was 9.63 runners, which cements how important it is to not be stuck down inside behind runners out the gate. Less traffic issues to deal with when you are outside and can dictate your race better.

Running style in 2025 was fairly balanced, with closers at 39% and early runners at 36%. That is a shift from what 2024 showed, where closers were the dominant style at 56%, with early runners at 30% and stalkers at just 15%. The closer’s win percentage coming down from 2024 to 2025 while remaining the largest single group across both years suggests that closing trips have a real, sustainable edge in these 1-turn races.

1-Turn Routes Detailed Profile

The 1-mile distance carries almost the entire sample in both years, 26 of 28 races in 2025 and 25 of 27 in 2024, with only a handful of races at 1 mile and 70 yards. Given how small the 70-yard sample is, this profile is effectively a 1-mile profile.

Winners in 2025, on average, were in 4.42 in place at the 1st call, 2.29 lengths off the leader, improving only slightly to 4.31 in position and 2.52 lengths back at the 2nd call before tightening up to 3.08 in position and 1.16 lengths back by the 6-furlong call.

That is a profile of horses making up real ground in the second half of the race rather than controlling from the front.

The 2024 numbers told a similar but more pronounced story. Winners were further back at in 5.60 place and 3.19 lengths off at the opening call, and 5.52 place, 3.75 lengths back at the 4-furlong call, before closing to 3.80 place and 1.50 lengths back late by the 6-furlong call.

Both years show winners doing their best work in the stretch run rather than early, which lines up with the closer-friendly running style you read above.

1-Turn Routes Betting Analysis

The favorite dominated the win column in 2025, taking 50% of all races outright, with the 2nd choice managing just 14.3% and the 3rd choice shut out entirely at 0 for 28. In 2024, the favorite’s win rate was lower at 37%, with a meaningful chunk of races, 33.3%, going to the rest of the field outside the top three choices.

The balanced board produced the standout number in this entire primer. In 2025, balanced favorites (8/5 to 2/1) won 62.5% of 8 races, and placed in 87.5% of races. That is an exceptional number, though the sample of 8 races is modest. Still, it is worth noting heading into the 2026 meet.

The monster favorite category backed this up with a larger sample. In 2025, monster favorites won 53.8% of 13 races and placed in 76.9% of races. In 2024, monster favorites won 44.4% of 9 races. Two years of data agree. When the board shows a heavily bet favorite in a 1-turn route at Kentucky Downs, respecting that horse has been the profitable play both on win tickets and as a key piece underneath.

The chaos board is where caution is warranted. In 2025, chaos favorites won just 20% of 5 races, and in 2024 the number was worse, 15.4% of 13 races. Wide-open betting boards at this distance have not rewarded chalk backers in either year, and the 2nd choice or field is worth stronger consideration when the favorite sits at 5/2 or higher in a 1-turn route.

2-Turn Routes

The 2-turn route profile is the smallest sample in this Kentucky Downs primer at just 14 races each year, so every number here should be treated as a trend rather than a settled conclusion.

Even with that caveat, the post position pattern held up. Posts 7+ won 50% of races in 2025 and 40% in 2024, again the strongest single group in both years, continuing the theme that has defined every profile at this meet.

Remember, that 1st turn at Kentucky Downs is essentially a hairpin. Being stuck down inside is brutal to navigate.

Running style is where 2-turn routes stand apart. Closers were the dominant group in both years, 57% in 2025 and 47% in 2024. Early runners were the weakest group in both years, just 14% in 2025 and 20% in 2024 as well. Over the extended distance of a 2-turn route, the profile clearly favors horses that can finish, not ones trying to control the pace from the start.

2-Turn Routes Detailed Profile

The 1 mile & 5/16 distance carried the larger sample in both years, 9 of 14 races each meet. At 1 mile & 5/16 in 2025, winners on average were in 5.89 place and 3.86 lengths back at the opening call, still 5th in place and 3.08 lengths back by the 3rd call. A profile showing winners were well off the pace deep into the race.

The 1 mile & 1/2 sample showed winners much closer to the action, in 3.40 place and 2.50 lengths back at the opening call in 2025, holding around 3.20 in position by the 3rd call. With samples this small at each individual distance, treat this as a note rather than a firm conclusion.

2-Turn Routes Betting Analysis

Favorites had their best showing of any category in this primer at 2-turn routes. In 2025, the favorite won 42.9% of races outright and, when broken out by tote category, delivered the strongest number in the entire primer.

Balanced favorites (8/5 to 2/1) went 4 for 5 in 2025, an 80% win rate, placing in all 5 races. The 2024 balanced sample backed this up almost exactly, also 4 for 5, an 80% win rate. That is about as strong a two-year confirmation as you will find anywhere in this primer. The sample is small, 5 races each year, but the consistency across two separate seasons makes this the single most actionable betting angle in the Kentucky Downs primer. When a 2-turn route shows a balanced-board favorite, the data says lean in, not away. The public has been solid in finding the winner in these races.

The chaos board told the opposite story. In 2025, chaos favorites went 0-for-4, and in 2024 they managed just 1 win in 6 races. Races with a favorite at 5/2 or higher in 2-turn routes have not been kind to the chalk in either year, which fits the broader pattern seen in 1-turn routes as well. Across both route categories at Kentucky Downs, a heavily consolidated or moderately backed favorite has been worth respecting, while a wide-open board has been a spot to look past the favorite.

What to Watch at Kentucky Downs Entering 2026

A few trends ran consistently across both years at Kentucky Downs, and they are worth carrying into how you approach the new meet:

Posts 7+ have led every profile in both 2024 and 2025.

2. Know the distance before applying a running style bias.
The sprint and route profiles are not interchangeable.

3. Respect balanced-board favorites in the routes.

4. Be more skeptical when the board is chaotic.
Favorites at 5/2 or higher have consistently struggled in the route profiles.

5. Treat 2-turn route numbers with caution.
The direction is interesting, but the sample is small.

The inner turf routes played to the inside this past week, with posts 1-3 going 5-for-7 and climbing to 47% on the meet. Running styles stayed close, with stalkers leading the week with three wins. Early and closing runners each had two winners. It is worth watching whether the post-position bias holds into the final stretch of the meet or evens back out.

One of the most consistent biases this year at Saratoga is the closers in the turf sprints. They are winning 54% of races. This past week, they struggled somewhat, going just 2-for-8. Early and stalking runners each had three wins. Also, keep an eye on posts 4-6, who went 5-for-8 last week.

With it being Travers Stakes week, the dirt routes are of importance. Posts 1-3 are 20-for-28 (71%) through eight weeks of racing. Last week, they were 2-for-4. Stalkers are controlling the running styles, winning 43% of races. However, early runners are starting to come alive in these races. They are tied at a 29% clip with the closers, but last week, these early runners won 3 of 4 races.

Ellis Park’s 2026 meet has wrapped up. It’s important to see how the full meet played out across every profile when evaluating these horses shipping out.

The dirt sprints were the most competitive profile at the track all year, and that held right through the final week. Stalkers finished the meet strong, winning 6 of the last 12 races, and closed out the meet as the top running style at 48%. Early speed finished right behind at 37%. Posts 4-6 were winning over 40% of races in the opening month, but finished at a 39% clip. That is largely due to how strong posts 1-3 came on in recent weeks. This past week of racing, posts 1-3 won 6 of 12 races.

The dirt mile went the other direction. Early speed was the clear leader at the meet and finished at 48%. Closers struggled, winning just 9 of 46 races over the eight weeks.

The dirt routes had just three races run all year, and closers won every one of them. That will be something to note for any horse coming out of these races moving forward.

Turf sprints finished with early runners winning 53% of races. In the closing week, early runners went 4-for-4. It is important to really dive into the weekly and daily analysis in these races because this profile did fluctuate throughout the meet.

Closers controlled the turf routes all year, and they finished at 45%. You did see the closers around the 50% mark in weeks prior, but early runners have performed well in the recent weeks. Last week, these early runners were 4-for-6. The other serious edge was posts 1-3. They finished up winning 43% of turf routes.

Post position never fully separated. Posts 4-6 finished on top at 39%, but posts 1-3 and 7+ were both competitive throughout the meet. It is important to note that in the first month of this 2026 meet, posts 4-6 were hovering around the 45% mark.

Reference point for the meet: this was a running-style surface more than a post-position one.

Early speed was the defining bias of the dirt mile all season, finishing at 51%, the strongest running-style mark on any Ellis Park surface. Posts 4-6 led by post position at 46%. This was one of the more reliable, consistent biases at the track all year.

Only three dirt route races were run across the entire 2026 meet. Closers won all three.

Too small a sample to call an established bias, but closers went 3-for-3, and that will be something to keep in mind with any horse shipping from here.

Early speed controlled the turf sprints throughout the season, finishing at 53%, the strongest running-style bias at the track outside the dirt mile.

Post position spread fairly evenly between posts 4-6 and 7+, both around 38-40%, with posts 1-3 trailing at 27%.

This profile changed its overall look multiple times throughout the meet. It is important to dig into the daily profiles to see how each week played.

Closers were the story of the turf routes this year, finishing at a 45% clip. Posts 1-3 held the post-position edge at 43%. These two groups were the main biases you saw weekly here.

Early speed struggled throughout the meet, finishing at just 27%. Their last two weeks brought that overall win percentage up drastically.

Stalkers had their best week yet in the dirt sprints, winning 8 of 14 races. They’re still the leading running style on the meet at 48%, just ahead of early runners at 37%. Posts 4-6 had a rough week, going just 3-for-14. They’re winning 41% of races after seven weeks. Going into this closing week, be sure to watch how these runners are performing.

Posts 4-6 had a strong week in the dirt mile races, winning 5 of 6 races and pushing their meet total to 51% (21-for-41). Early speed remains the leading running style there at 51%. They were 3-for-6 last week, and stalkers had two winners.

Closers have controlled the turf routes, but last week was a total reversal. Early runners were 4-for-5 in week seven. A closer did have the other win. Posts 1-3 are winning 44% of races. Last week, they and posts 4-6 each had two wins.

Posts 1-3 swept the dirt routes entirely this past week, winning all five races. That pushes their meet total to 54%, the strongest post bias at Monmouth right now. Running style was more of the norm. Early and stalking runners each had two wins last week.

Early speed also had a strong week in the turf sprints, winning 5 of 7 races. They’re now up to 56% for the meet in these races. Posts 4-6 hold a post-position edge there as well, a 46% clip on the year. Last week, these middle lane posts went 4-for-7.

The turf routes played a bit differently this past week, with early runners going 3-for-5. Stalkers and closers each had one win. Through the 15 weeks, stalkers are winning 51% of races.

Just five dirt sprints last week, and posts 1-3 were 4-for-5. That brings them to 52-for-100 on the meet. Early and stalking runners continue to control these races. Last week, early runners were 3-for-5. Stalkers had the other two wins.

The dirt sprints keep playing to inside and early runners. Posts 1-3 went 13-for-19 this past week and are now up to 57% for the meet. Early runners also won 13 of 19 races and are sitting at 48% on the season. This is as strong as the inside and early combination has looked all year at Saratoga. It is worth watching closely into the coming week because it has been the angle to attack this year.

Posts 1-3 didn’t win a single race this past week in the turf sprints. 4 of the 7 races went to posts 4-6. Closers went 5-for-7 wins and now sit at 60% for the meet. Early speed, by contrast, has fallen to just an 18% clip through the seven weeks.

The inner turf routes are seeing closers win 48% of races through 50 races. Last week, stalkers and closers each went 3-for-7. Early runners really struggled.

With the rain washing races off the turf, there were eight dirt mile races. Five of those were won by posts 1-3. Stalkers also won five races. The other three races were won by early runners. It is worth noting that closers are just 3-for-33 (9%) in these races. You must be in touch with the pace to be a contender at this distance.

There were just three dirt routes this past week, but it is important to note that posts 1-3 are 18-for-24 (75%) at Saratoga. Last week, posts 1-3 went 2-for-3. Stalkers are also performing very strongly here, winning 46% of races. They had two of the three wins last week. Early runners are actually performing the worst, winning just 21% of races.

This is a surface where running style, more than post draw, has been the deciding factor.

Stalkers have taken the lead in the dirt sprints, winning 48% of races, just ahead of early speed at 37%. Post position stays fairly balanced, with posts 4-6 holding a modest edge at 41%.

Posts 4-6 lead the dirt mile at 51%, the strongest post-position bias at Ellis Park. Early speed is the top running style at 51% as well, meaning mid-pack posts with forward running styles have combined for the most success here.

This remains a very small sample, only three races run all season. Closers have won all three to date. Worth continuing to track as more races are added, but not yet large enough to treat as an established trend.

Post position leans outside in the turf sprints, with posts 4-6 and 7+ each winning 38% of races. Running styles have been where your edge is here. Early runners are winning 46% of races. That has been how the profile has looked weekly.

Closers remain the strongest angle in the turf routes, winning 47% of races. Posts 1-3 hold the post-position edge at 44%. Early speed has had the toughest time on this surface, down to 22%.

Closers were perfect in the turf routes, sweeping all four races this past week. They’re now winning 50% of turf routes on the meet, well clear of the field. Early runners remain very vulnerable, just 6-for-40 (15%) all year. In recent weeks, they have struggled. When looking at the post draw, posts 1-3 are winning 45% of races. This inside bias has started to cool off a bit. Be aware of how these inside runners perform this week.

Dirt sprints have been all about stalkers, and last week was no different. They were 6-for-10. They’re hitting at a 46% clip through six weeks. Early runners took a bit of a dip, getting just three wins last week. Posts 4-6 are holding their edge, winning 44% of races overall. Last week, they split the wins with posts 1-3, with each post group having five wins.

Keep an eye on the dirt mile races. Closers were 3-for-6 last week. Early runners are winning 51% of races overall, but weren’t as dominant as you have seen in the weeks past.

Stalkers took over the turf routes, winning 6 of 7 races this past week. They’re now hitting on the meet at 54%. Closers were shut out last week, going winless. Posts 4-6 are winning 52% of races. This past week, they won 3 of 7 races, but so did posts 1-3.

The dirt sprints played pretty evenly in the post draw. Posts 4-6 were 4-for-8, but inside runners had three wins. This past week could be important moving forward since posts 1-3 are winning 50% of races overall. Early runners had the better week by running style, going 4-for-8, and they lead the meet at 43%.

Dirt routes went entirely to stalkers, 3-for-3 this past week. That group is tied with early runners at 42% for the meet, so this was a strong short-term swing worth watching if it continues. Posts 1-3 won 2 of the 3 races last week.

One day of turf sprints, and closers were 2-for-4. Posts 1-3 were also 2-for-4. Remember, early runners have dominated these races. After 45 races, they are winning 53% of the time.

Closers are running the show on both Saratoga turf courses right now. In the inner turf routes, they went 6-for-11 this past week and are sitting at 49% for the meet. It was much the same story on the main turf course, where closers picked up just two of six races, but are winning 55% overall. Turf sprints are seeing closers win 55% of races on the meet. They were 2-for-7 last week.

That’s three different turf surfaces at Saratoga where closers hold the highest win rate. This is a trend worth circling into the coming week.

The dirt sprints stayed with posts 1-3, who went 10-for-22 this past week and are now winning 54% of races on the meet. Running style was tighter, early runners were 9-for-22, and stalkers had eight wins. Early runners are holding a 43% win rate to the stalkers 33% over the meet. Closers had five wins but are still hanging around a respectable 24% overall.

Dirt routes saw posts 1-3 grab two of three races and are winning 76% of races this year, the strongest post bias at Saratoga. What has been interesting is how well off the pace runners have been performing here. Last week, closers were 2-for-3, and a stalker had the other win. Early runners are winning just 19% of races through six weeks.

Dirt Sprints

Posts 1-3 have controlled the dirt sprints all meet, winning 54% of races from that group alone, well clear of posts 4-6 at 32% and posts 7+ at just 14%.

Running style has been more competitive.

Early speed leads at 43%, but stalkers aren’t far behind at 33%, and closers have still found their share of winners at 24%.

The inside post bias is the clearest signal on this surface, but running style still matters race to race.

Dirt Mile

The dirt mile shows a similar post bias to the sprints, with posts 1-3 winning 52% of races and posts 4-6 close behind at 36%.

Running style is essentially split down the middle between early speed and stalkers, both sitting at 44%, with closers well back at 12%. This is a surface where post position matters more than running style.

Dirt Routes

No surface at Saratoga shows a stronger post bias than the dirt routes. Posts 1-3 are winning 76% of races, the highest mark on the entire meet.

Running style tells a different story here; stalkers and closers combine for 81% of the wins. Meaning even with the inside post draw, horses who come from off the pace have found the most success.

Turf Sprints

Running style, not post position, is what drives the turf sprints. Closers are winning 58% of races, the strongest running-style bias anywhere at the track, while early speed has struggled to just 15%.

Post position has stayed fairly even across all three groups, none straying far from a third of the winners. When you’re betting these races, running style is the number to lean on.

Turf Routes

Closers hold the edge here as well, winning 55% of turf route races. Post position skews slightly outside, with posts 4-6 and 7+ each sitting at 36%, ahead of the inside posts at 27%.

Between this surface and the turf sprints, closers have been the most reliable running-style angle at Saratoga all meet.

Inner Turf Routes

The inner course tells a similar story to the main turf routes. Closers lead at 49%, with posts 1-3 holding a post-position edge, a 47% clip. Early speed has had the toughest time on this course, winning just 28% of races.

Across all three Saratoga turf surfaces, the pattern holds: back the closers, and don’t overweight the inside posts.

Posts 4-6 are staying above that 40% rate, winning 44% of races after five weeks. These middle runners were 4-for-9 last week. Closers struggled, going 1-for-9. Early and stalking runners each had four wins.

Early runners have been dominating the dirt mile races. They are winning 55% of races, but were just 1-for-5 last week. Stalkers had three wins. Posts 4-6 are now leading the way in the meet (14-for-29) after going 3-for-5 last week.

This will be a week to circle moving forward for the dirt sprinters.

Just four dirt routes last week, and early runners won three of them. They are winning 44% of races through the 13 weeks. A closer had the other win. Posts 4-6 won three races, and the other race went to an inside runner.

Turf sprints have been playing to the early runners, and last week was no different. They went 5-for-6 and are hitting at a 56% clip. Posts 4-6 went 3-for-6.

Only three turf routes last week, and posts 4-6 won two of them. Through 49 races, they have won 26, a 53% win rate. Stalkers also were 2-for-3 and are winning 49% of races.

Posts 1-3 continue their winning ways in the dirt sprints, going 12-for-21. This group of inside posts is winning 57% of races after five weeks at Saratoga. Closers have been winning as high as 31% of races, but that dropped after this past week. They went 2-for-21 and are now sitting at 24%. This could be due to the weather this past week, and it will be key to watch in the first few days of racing this week. Early runners won 11 races last week and are winning 44% of all races.

In four dirt mile races last week, three of them were won by posts 1-3. On the meet, these inside runners are 11-for-21.

The inside bias was even more prominent in the dirt routes, where they went 5-for-6. That brings posts 1-3 to 14-for-18 overall. Something that is important to note in these races is that off-the-pace runners have performed well. Stalkers are winning 44% of races this meet. They were 3-for-6 last week. Closers also went 3-for-6. The early runners were winless last week and have the fewest wins on the meet (4-for-18).

Turf racing was limited by the rain early in the week. That cut the turf sprints in week five to just three races. Closers continued their winning ways, going 3-for-3. This puts them at 17-for-26 (65%).

The inner turf routes saw posts 1-3 controlling these races in the first three weeks. Posts 4-6 have picked it up the past two weeks and are now the profile leader, being 16-for-32 (50%). Last week, posts 4-6 were 4-for-4. Closers are leading the way, winning 47% of inner turf routes. However, early runners are 10-for-32 (31%) in these races. They were 2-for-4 last week.
