If it wasn’t already apparent, Copenhagen Fashion Week is one of my favourites. The array of colour, texture, and styling stole my heart the first season I attended, and it hasn’t let go since.

Before we get into the madness that is fashion month, starting in New York this September, here’s a breakdown of the top trends coming out of Copenhagen this season.

From August third to August seventh, Copenhagen Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2027 took place and celebrated its twenty year anniversary. Although it’s not one of the core four fashion weeks, its presence still captures an audience on and off the runway. Simply, innovation has become inspiration.

What’s particularly groundbreaking about Copenhagen is the sustainability practices put in place, from smart material choices to fair working conditions being implemented.

Additionally according to Anja Stanković at Vogue Adria:

Over the last few years, Copenhagen’s off runway street style has been a topic of discussion. Buzzwords such as “Scandi Style” and “Copenhagen Girl” have been utilized to describe this particular phenomenon. Nordic fashion can be described as whimsical meets practicality. It’s worth noting that “Ganni, Cecilie Bahnsen, Saks Potts, Stine Goya, Rotate and Baum und Pferdgarten collectively broadened perceptions of Scandinavian design”. “Ganni Girl” (which originated in 2012) has also been a term used to describe this unique fashion sense. There’s a union between pattern, colour, and silhouette among Scandinavian fashion. Thanks to social media, this allowed for spectators to spark conversation about CPHFW and the impact of street style.

Early examples of Scandinavian Style can be found in oversized blazers and mix-matching. Now, people turn to CPHFW for outfit inspiration. It’s become an off-runway, runway. Over time, standing out became a Scandinavian speciality. You can find the looks from this year, here. Layers remained a common theme. As well as blending patterns and combining colours.

CPHFW street style sees colour and patterns as offerings to elevate functional fashion. The unexpected pairings prove fashion is best when it’s spontaneous. Also, when it’s not taken too seriously. Individuality and originality are in style and we couldn’t be happier about it.

Lyst prides itself on their three dimensions of data, “Desire, Demand, and Discovery”. Desire is focused on how the particular brand is endorsed online. Demand is centered around “searches, purchase intent and sales along with repeat engagement, brand-specific queries, and sustained interest over time.“ Finally, Discovery is associated with the “customer’s journey”. Brands come and go in popularity, but remaining contemporary is still crucial.

Although Matthieu Blazy’s leadership as creative director at Chanel has been short, by retaining the number one spot on Lyst, shows the impact of his craftsmanship. Evident in his debut, he finds ways to reimagine classic Chanel motifs, such as their tweed yet dares to be original by exploring methods of storytelling. His references inspire and pay homage to Coco Chanel. It’s both fresh and familiar.

Miu Miu’s rise on the Lyst can be attributed to their latest collaboration with New Balance, as seen on Coco Gauff at Wimbledon. Choosing to cash in on cultural moments allows for brands to attract new shoppers and remind previous shoppers of why they chose them in the first place.

Similarly, The “hottest products” list includes The New York Knicks Cap, Adidas and Willy Chavaria’s collaborated Jersey. The Knicks win of the NBA championship and World Cup were cultural moments that captured the attention of many. From athlete walk-ins to merchandise, fashion and sports’ partnership are to to be noted for 2026.

The hottest product list marks consumers’ need for clothes that are equal parts investment and weather friendly. The Massimo Dutti Toe Sandals, Issey Miyake Madame-T Stole, and Zimmermann Daylight Dress are evident of appropriate summer dressing. Measurability can be found in Voranida’s rise in success. There has been a “+232% quarter-on-quarter rise in demand for Voranida”. Their breathable and minimalist designs remain a popular choice.

Likewise, Phoebe Philo’s debut on the Lyst Index comes from a place of relevancy and “product led moments” have allowed for this appearance on the list. The “if you know, you know” of it all has translated into a quiet luxury staple.

Massimo Dutti’s advancing eight spots is a result of its recent Mediterranean Style methods of dress and celebrity endorsement at Cannes. (See Bella Hadid’s motorcycle look at Cannes).

Locally speaking, Literary Sport is a Toronto based activewear brand. There has been a +231% quarter-on-quarter rise in demand for Literary Sport”. Literary Sport is proof that minimalism is timeless for a reason.

This list is confirmation of luxury fluctuating between sports styling and stealth wealth. The “Old Money” aesthetic has never looked so modern!

Welcome to Homegrown. A spot to talk Canadian designers and brands, emerging and established, doing things worth paying attention to.

Edition one: Matières Fécales, the Montreal label that just dressed Zendaya for the biggest premiere of the year.

Canadian fashion brand Matières Fécales’ (most) recent impact in fashion is one to be noted, from Sarah Paulson and Maria Zardoya Met Gala looks to Zendaya’s Greek Goddess-esque makeup and ensemble.

French for “fecal matter”, Matières Fécales was founded by Hannah Rose Dalton and Steven Raj Bhaskaran in 2014. Originally, Dalton and Bhaskaran showcased upcycled gothic outfits. As well as occasional DJ-ing to cover the costs. In 2024, Dover Street Market Paris signed the duo into its independent designer incubator, rebranding them from Fecal Matter to Matières Fécales, the platform that put them on stylists’ radar.

Although they’re a young brand, their avant garde garments have attracted many. Law Roach reported that he had his eye on Matières Fécales fall 2025 look 37 even before he knew of the movie. Now, the dress has earned its place as iconic in contemporary fashion by being the dress that Zendaya wore to the Odyssey premiere. To put it simply, it’s gone viral. Greek Chic is not new to fashion,(Think gladiator shoes, minimalist makeup, and Alexander McQueen for Givenchy Spring 1997) but I like to think that it can be defined as timeless and minimalist beauty. Zendaya’s look for the Odyssey premiere embodies this emerging trend perfectly. Her glowy blush danced on her cheeks effortlessly, leaving many to want to recreate this classic style. Highlighter was accentuated at the corners of her eyes. As Greek Chic makes its way back into fashion, it is possible that we see this renaissance of Modern and Mediterranean inspired style.

What’s so unique about Matières Fécales is their bold and deliberate storytelling on the runway. Fall 2026 runway was aimed at calling out the filthy rich. The collection told a story about sinister stylings. For Matières Fécales they have a certain fashion philosophy that lies in self expression and daring to be original. They said “Freedom of expression is our main value. Being fearless in self-expression is not just our brand philosophy; it’s how we live our lives every day for over a decade now,” they say. “The Matières Fécales client really can be anyone, as long as they are willing to dare to be themselves.”

It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time Zendaya has chosen to wear this brand. She wore a rose-hued chiffon dress when she promoted The Drama.

Whether you choose to make Greek Chic happen or choose to be groundbreaking, Glamour comes in many forms. Matières Fécales’ knowledge and method of construction is proof of that ideal.

• Pink, lavender, lemon and blue as foundational colours this season, not accents.

• Rugby stripes, subverted tailoring, lived-in denim, graphic ties. Collegiate codes, but luxury.

• Extra long shorts or short shorts.

• Coloured denim is back.

• Loafers, apron-toe shoes, sneakers. Zegna paired blue loafers with linen shirting, prep undone a little.

• Neck scarves, ties, bow ties.

• Button-ups in regular and oversized fits, prints, patterns, new takes on pocket placement.

• The camp collar shirt.

• Buttons and embellishments throughout, reinforcing the sartorial side of this trend.

RESORT LINENS, BECAUSE SUMMER SHOULD BE FUN

• Dolce & Gabbana’s Vacanze Siciliane gave us silk swimwear and chevron knits, an elevated summer wardrobe.

• Texture from jacquards and open weave linens.

• Breathable, moisture-wicking, built for summers that keep getting hotter. Less a trend now, more a necessity.

• Casual button-ups, long and short sleeve.

• Dusty pastels throughout, including denim washed down to a soft, dusted colour.

• The boat shoe.

• Coastal core.

• Euro summer inspired.

SOFT TAILORING

Relaxed tailoring

• The three-button jacket, softened: lighter fabrics, a looser silhouette, casual tailoring.

• The kind of suit you’d actually wear to get to work.

Modern ‘tech’ tailoring

• Utility meets leisure: cargo, skin-baring cutouts, outdoor and hiking references worked into ready-to-wear.

• Pockets built for tech, genuinely useful for the commute, not just dressed-up for the office.

Cropped hems

• Ankles exposed, cut just above the ankle, for anyone who wants to show some skin or let an anklet do the talking.

EXPRESSION

Pulling the opposite direction from prep and resort’s ease, this is where skin, silhouette and personal detail took over.

Skin-tight and cropped

• Skinny jeans, skinny pants, skin-tight fits, plunging necklines. Demand’s up 25% month over month per Lyst, so this isn’t just a runway story.

• Prada’s “Clarity” collection (Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons) pushed narrow trousers and second-skin silhouettes.

The trouserless trend

• Not the most commercial trend of the season, but worth flagging.

• Boxers and briefs replaced trousers outright on runways across three cities.

• Saint Laurent set the tone: tailored jackets worn over leather briefs, no pants at all.

• The idea reached as far as Simone Rocha’s Pitti Uomo debut.

The statement jacket / softened masculinity

• Softened masculinity showed up through lace, silk, sheer fabrics and florals, led by Givenchy (Sarah Burton’s menswear debut), ERL and Egonlab.

• Brooches and embellishments carried the personal touch.

• Dior’s Jonathan Anderson pinned delicate florals throughout his collection.

• Saint Laurent, Sacai and Simone Rocha all leaned on pins as the season’s accessory of choice.

FABRICS TO WATCH

Fabric to watch: sheer

• Sheer had its moment, mostly in shirting, and mostly for the right reasons. Lightweight, free-flowing, styled with an easy summer logic at Kiko Kostadinov and Feng Chen Wang.

• Dior brought it into tailoring, Hed Mayner into trousers. Done well, it reads elevated and textural, a real option for evening dressing rather than just a warm-weather fix.

• Silk dominated at the high end, nylon had its own moment in influencer buzz, per Trendalytics.

• Natural fabrics (linen, silk, cotton, seersucker) were the season’s real through line.

COLOUR MOMENT

• Teal surged hardest in market traction, with aqua being called the season’s “it” colour

  

• Cream as the base neutral that everything else got built on.

• Colour is back.

• Moss green.

• Desert tones (terracotta, clay, sand).

• Pastels, sorbet tones.

• Colour blocking and full monochromatic fits delivered the boldest colour moments of the season.

I love a brand collab moment, and this season delivered.

Matthieu Blazy’s Chanel is nothing short of a fairytale. Think textures that stand out, life size plants, and references to the past, while acknowledging its place in the present and future of fashion. This fall/winter 2026 couture show, titled “Gaby and the Beanstalk” proved that fables and fashion have more in common than one might assume.

It’s worth noting that Matthieu Blazy’s Chanel debut was highly anticipated. In June 2024, Virginie Viard, who was once described as Karl Lagerfeld’s “right arm and left arm” left Chanel.

It wasn’t until December 2024 where the luxury house had chosen their “saviour”. Arguably, assuming the role of artistic director at any designer label is a challenge in itself. Though Blazy had experience with high end, he worked at Bottega Veneta.

Blazy, being only the fourth designer in Chanel’s history, had high expectations placed on him. Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2026 show was nothing short of a phenomenon. Planets and stars surrounded the ceilings. Elements of familiarity were evident (blazers, fringe, and pearls), but he transformed tradition with present ideals of fashion (movement and fluidity.) Ultimately, Blazy was met with a standing ovation.

Blazy continues to blend past and present, as evident in Gaby and the Beanstalk. Looks featured well-known children’s stories “Puss in Boots” and “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”. Also, The Wizard of Oz’ iconic scarecrow was represented in three looks. Shoes were embellished in gold-leaf and eggs. Minaudières of beans and bears could also be found. A defining look were the bean-shaped pearl high heels. Proving this collection was equal parts beanstalk and catwalk friendly.

As Chanel brides are a couture convention, Blazy defied this “and did not end the show with a wedding dress. Instead, he sent out a Little Black Dress”. Coco Chanel never married. It’s fair to assume that this was deliberate on Blazy’s behalf. It’s proof that fairytale endings look different for everyone.

There’s significance in Roseberry’s collections, as they highlight surrealism and sculpture. When Roseberry was looking for the material that would resemble human skin, he noted that he “found an atelier outside of Paris that makes photo-realistic infants and babies for cinema,” he explained. “They’re silicone experts, and we started working building silicone as material and as objects. Lakes of silicone are poured out on tables, and it becomes like a satin, like a double-faced satin, basically.” Thus, resulting in the manipulation of the material. The result? A perfectly fitted corset, fit for the models. The corset came in blue, white, and pink.

The use of real flowers, needing to be fed sugar and water to maintain their form, both compliments the surrealism and sculptural elements that Roseberry is capable of. Natural seashells and baked fish scales are simply a part of the “Roseberry Experience”. Materials may vary, (such as silicone, latex, paint baked into sheets), but keeping your attention is the standard. It goes without saying that these materials make sound, which adds to the Roseberry Experience. The Roseberry Experience can apply to Roseberry’s beating heart dress found in Haute Couture Fall Winter 2026. In addition, for Roseberry, jewelry functions as a reminder of existence. Metaphorically and literally speaking. In this collection, sea-inspired shell-like jewelry and brooches were seen on models.

Other materials such as fringe and tulle were utilized in this collection, but the surrealist nature persisted. Emphasis on nature, as a tulle dress was graced with silicone dots, appeared to move. It looked as though it was imitating the pulse of a jellyfish. Similarly, another gown resembled a living coral reef. As the collection progressed, the marine motifs manifested further. On a latex jacket, tentacles had a swaying movement on the shoulders of the model. Additionally, flesh-toned gills adorned the backs of models and bustiers were bejeweled with small LED lights, reminiscent of the bioluminescent organisms, as models advanced down the runway.

As aquatic aesthetics are trending, Roseberry’s coral couture couldn’t have come at a better time.

This year, Australian Fashion Week celebrated its 30-year anniversary. The event gained recognition in 1997 from Linda Evangelista’s walk for Alex Perry. It’s worth noting that The Australian Fashion Council (AFC) took control of AFW only six months prior to the 2025 event. Previously, IMG assisted with the week for almost twenty years. AFW was founded by Simon Lock, a renowned figure for founding international fashion weeks in the Asia Pacific era. What once seemed unattainable for brands to participate, has now become an approachable and recognizable platform for contemporary designers.

On our radar

Newgen at AFW provides a focus on emerging designers. Designers include Alberta Bucciarelli, EDITION Alice Van Meurs x Sarrita King, Gloria Chol and KingKing Creative. Alberta Bucciarelli is a Sydney based knitwear designer who’s honours collection, titled “Oceana” critiques the concept of knitwear strictly for winter, which can be found in look four of her collection. EDITION Alice Van Meurs x Sarrita King’s collection is a collaboration that showcases length. Gloria Chol prides herself on being “Australia’s first South Sudanese–owned luxury fashion house”. Her work emphasizes her ancestry and artistic capabilities. KingKing creative’s philosophy is similar to Gloria Chol’s, as lineage and legacy merge to create wearable “art, fashion, jewellery, accessories and homewares.” Storytelling is evident throughout Chol’s designs, as they celebrate and recognize Indigenous Art.

In the know

The Frontier is an established group of individuals who are gaining traction for their work. Brands include Haluminous (by Hannah Teresa), Ouse (by Samantha Diorio), Paris Jade Burrows, madre natura (by Jackie Galleghan), Rose Guiffre and Suzaan Stander.

Trends to note

Trends to be mindful of include Farage, Biana Spender’s, and Aje’s usage of leather, from workwear to casual wear. Esse Studios’ construction of leather was reminiscent of a powersuit and a free-flowing dress. Beare Park’s arrangement of leather could be found in her final look, which was a strapless jumpsuit. Sheer remained popular amongst Esse Studio, Beare Park, and Bianca Spender and Courtney Zheng. Bianca and Courtney’s interpretations of sheer were more feminine and form fitting. Beare Park chose to showcase an older model at the end of the show. It would appear that AFW has shifted and chooses to celebrate age and body type.

Consumer-led runway

The Edit: The Edit is a consumer-led show that highlights current brands, providing a framework for the modern consumer and buyer. A selection of outfits from both Edit shows are available for purchase. Designers include AJE Studio, Anna Quan, Bec + Bridge, Bondi Born, Effie Kats, Friends with Frank, Henne, M.J. Bale, Romy, Silk Laundry and Two.One. Key trends included office attire (evident in velvet suiting and standard suits). In addition, there were statement neck lines, oftentimes the neck was covered. AFW provides a path for creatives to hone their design talents. This year’s collections were proof of a cohesive understanding of what resortwear should be — individual and distinct.

Landing in New York

This was a special one for me.

Back in university, I interned in New York for a summer.

As a Canadian, getting an internship in a different country was hard, really hard. I didn’t have the connections, and I didn’t have the visa.

What I did have was determination, an unbreakable work ethic, and a relentless drive to land a summer internship in NYC.

So naturally, I worked incredibly hard. And I landed it.

During the summer of 2016, this dream of working in New York became my reality. I spent four months interning at Derek Lam.

2016. Time flies.

Full Circle: 2016 → 2026

It’s now been 10 years since that internship. February 2026 marks the relaunch of Derek Lam after a six-year hiatus, and with everyone buzzing about how 2026 feels like 2016 again, something about this moment feels especially full circle. As someone who studies trends and human behaviour for a living, I can’t help but find the timing fascinating.

Seeing the brand return to the New York Fashion Week calendar this season genuinely made me so happy, and what a return it was.

The brand’s new creative director, Robert Rodriguez, made his official debut while ushering in this new chapter.

The collection immediately transported me back to that NYC girl. Designed with the SoHo girl in mind, it felt like a natural extension of the brand’s identity. I can almost smell the Mercer Street store now.

It delivered versatility without compromising style, effortless, directional, and ready for life on the go.

We saw soft tailoring with extra-high funnel necklines, updated trench coats, and rich texture created through contrasting fabrics.

Derek Lam remains an ode to the modern American girl style.

Why it Matters Today

The collection was a perfect display of today’s lifestyle, the modern New York woman, aligning with a theme we saw consistently across NYFW this season. The idea of versatility has evolved: it’s no longer just about day-to-night dressing, but about pieces that transfer seamlessly across work, social life, and travel. It’s a reflection of what today’s consumers are truly craving, capturing the essence of the ultimate NYC “it” girl.

I can’t wait to see what the next 10 years hold.

In honour of Copenhagen Fashion Week, I am rounding up a few of my favourite brands that showed this season.

Founded in 2014 by sisters Julie and Marie Skall, Skall Studio is a value-driven brand known for fair production, fur and leather free collections, and timeless styles in natural fibres. PFW

The street style in Paris is always superb, but when it comes to fashion week, it’s on a whole other level. Being in the city is an electrifying experience for any fashion enthusiast, and the atmosphere is worth soaking in.

This past season was a special one. With 13 designer debuts, 8 of which taking place in Paris, it was one for the books. Below is a breakdown!

Virgil Abloh Tribute

The Grand Palais presented Virgil Abloh: The Codes — a 10-day exhibition and the first major European show fully dedicated to Virgil Abloh and his impact on fashion, design, and music. An exclusive experience not to be missed, and one that will truly stay with me forever.

Trade Shows

During Paris Fashion week, several trade shows take place. These trade shows align with the fashion week calendar creating spaces for designers to meet with buyers and other industry professionals. I’m breaking down two notables trade shows I attended this season and some designers that stood out to me.

Splash Paris

A premium resortwear and swimwear focused trade show held at the Pavillon Gabriel in Paris.

Notable brands

• Isabel Beachwear - Luxury swimwear for day-to-night appeal

• Seaquelle - Premium Scandinavian swimwear & clothing brand

• Nau bikinis - Handcrafted swimwear studio from Brazil

• Shani Shemer - Luxury swimwear and resortwear brand, known for its feminine designs, fit, soft premium fabrics, and quality

• WHEVE - Sustainably made handwoven from Uruguay. When Kelly Rutherford shops the brand and shares one of her signature elevator outfit photos, you know it's a favourite of the chic girls

Premiere Classe

Showcasing accessories, jewellery, footwear, leather goods as well as ready-to-wear, Premiere Classe is a massive trade show held at the Jardin des Tuileries. This is a crucial event showcasing new trends and young designers. Featuring over 350 brands and 10,000 visitors.

Notable brands

• CAHU - A Parisian accessories brand founded by stylist Clémence Cahu, famous for its durable, colourful, and practical bags made from repurposed PVC canvas, inspired by her family's inflatable castle factory in Normandy. I have been loving this brand for quite some time now

• Cecile Boccara - Parisian designer Cécile Boccara handcrafts exceptional, nature-inspired floral and baroque jewellery and accessories in Paris using silk flowers, crystals, pearls, enamels, and coral.

• Amori Mori - A vibrant, handmade jewelry brand created by a Spanish mother-daughter duo, offering unique, story-driven accessories inspired by nature, travel, and culture

• Dragon diffusion - Handwoven leather bags. Not to be missed - this booth was packed with buyers

• Anthology Paris - Shoes and bags designed in Paris, manufactured by crafts-people in Portugal

• Softromaine - Footwear and handbags that are light-to-the-touch and pure-to-the-feel from a South Korean design house based in Seoul

• Jack Gomme - Since 1985, cultivating a unique and unconventional vision of leather goods by offering bags and accessories that are light, modern, and colourful.

• Domestique - Accessory brand repurposing everyday objects into subversive icons

• Olivia Dar - Made in Dehli, handcrafted collections combine Indian craftsmanship with a French touch

• Lucas Jack - Individually hand-crafted jewellery using the highest quality resin from Switzerland and embellished with 18k gold-plating, 100% of which is sourced from recycled materials

Vintage

I love a vintage store and have for as long as I can remember. So whenever I travel, I save as many as possible onto my Google Maps that way when I’m wandering the city with the help of that map, I am sure not to miss it.

Flea Markets

Not everyone loves a flea market. The size can overwhelm, I get it. But for me, the bigger the better! I love to search for and find those hidden gems. The reward and one-of-a-kind nature brings me tremendous joy. I should probably preface that with when I worked in television, doing styling for an array of different shows, I practically shopped for a living, so I became pretty good at it and developed a strategy that works.

Flea Market Breakdown

Pop-up Markets

Every weekend in Paris, there’s around 3-4 popup flea markets (called Brocantes) that happen. The locations change each weekend and the vendors range from home goods to fashion. If you enjoy a good flea market, be sure to check at least one of them out! Pin this website so you can keep track of where and when markets are popping up.

Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen

Just north of Paris is the Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen. One of the world’s largest flea markets and simply a must-see for anyone who loves to shop these kinds of places. Open Saturdays, Sundays and sometimes Mondays, it ranges in incredible antique offerings to vintage finds. It’s big, so bring cash and plan to stay a while. Strolling through the beautiful alleyways with incredible antique home-wear items was a highlight.

I’m breaking down six key styles to invest in this season.

Toronto winters can vary in intensity, but one thing always seems to remain true. There will be slush and an unforgiving amount of salt. Winter boots can be a challenge. Depending on where you live will play into what boots work best for you. But hey, we’ve all slid through the snow trying not to wipe out in heeled boots, right?!

The Ankle Boot

The search for the perfect Chelsea boot during my university years remains weirdly, a very clear memory for me. They had to be a rich, deep black and hit the ankle in that exact right spot, not too high, not too low. The heel had to be low, but still feel intentional. Clean gussets only, no embellishments, no pull tab, and an almond-ish toe that lived comfortably between too round and too pointy.

The perfect black boot is tough to track down. But when you find it, buy two, trust me.

The Row leather zipper boots have been my go-to for years and have proven incredibly versatile. They’ve traveled with me to Copenhagen, New York, and London Fashion Weeks, endured numerous flights, and held up against rough weather, yet their condition remains excellent. A key point is their weight. While durable, I now consider wearing them on a plane more of a practical necessity than a comfortable choice. Unlike other boots, these are a perfect fit for my relatively small ankles. The incredibly soft leather will ensure they comfortably mold and stretch to suit your ankle shape.

While the price tag is a bit steep, there are some great similar zipper boot options out there that won’t totally drain your bank account. I’m currently obsessed with this pair from greige - a boutique right here in Toronto!

The Apron Toe Boot

I LOVE a good apron toe shoe. While this trend is still a little more fashion-forward, it’s a style that has been making the rounds in Europe for some time now. Everyone was wearing this style in Paris this fall. Even my husband bought an apron toe shoe while we were away. Even though I tried to get him the exact pair two years ago in Toronto, he needed time to come around to the idea. Well, I guess going to Paris was it. Seriously, he purchased the exact same Camper shoe. Men!!

The Knee High Boot

The knee high boot is a versatile, all season style. Transitioning easily from an elevated fall staple, layered under pants for extra warmth, to pairing effortlessly with a summer dress.

The Suede Boot

I know suede in the winter can be intimidating. But suede is more durable than you think. A good suede brush goes a long way and will help you keep your suede looking fresh. Although, pre-warning, salt and suede are not a great combo. So if you also suffer from an overly salted neighbourhood, grab another boot for those really slushy days.

The Western Boot

Everyone needs a western boot. How far west you go is your choice, but these are a fantastic staple. I’m obsessed with these Maguire boots. The faded leather and slanted heel feel incredibly elevated.

The Sock Boot

By the sound of it, this may feel like too much of a flash back to the Balenciaga or Vetements sneakers, but this one is different. I promise. The sock boot takes a refined, more modern approach, styled back to a looser, baggier silhouette.

The Winter Approved Boot

Lastly, a boot I pretend to not need but really do. Especially after last winter here in Toronto…walking down the street was a struggle. So a pair of winter approved boots is a necessity. You can still have warm feet without sacrificing the style, these boots speak to that.

While most people reserve light sheer layers for the warmer months, I’m here to tell you that you can wear them all year long.

Last November, I got married in downtown Toronto at the Gardiner Museum. I bought my dress a year earlier at Kleinfeld in Toronto prior to them closing. At that time, we were planning a September outdoor garden wedding, and since Toronto’s weather can vary and September can still be very hot, I chose a silky, straight-cut, sleeveless dress with a V-neckline and V-shaped open back that flowed softly to the floor. Once we pivoted to an end-of-November wedding, I realized I would be very chilly but did not want a coat for all our outdoor photos. That’s how the cape entered the picture.

Truthfully, I knew when I bought my dress that I would style it differently. Adding some sort of twist that made it more “me.” So, perhaps this was meant to be all along.

I headed down to Queen Street West, Toronto’s fabric district, and searched all the stores for the fabric I needed to bring my vision to life. While most stores did not have what I was looking for in stock, I lucked out at Chu Shing Textiles and found the exact thing I wanted: a light ivory, pleated, sheer silk, straight from France. It was perfect.

I made my dream cape that drifted perfectly in the wind. Truly the perfect piece to run through the streets of Yorkville in (whether or not I realized it at the time).

Sheer skirts are not just for the summer. Add tights, wear it over pants, or layer it over another skirt. Play with layers for added texture.

A sheer top exudes elegance to me. Grab a great pair of trousers, some boots, and style this look up for an evening out or holiday event.
