The U.S. economy added 162,000 jobs in August, significantly exceeding economists’ expectations, according to new data released Friday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.1 percent.

The August number represented a sharp improvement from recent months. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had expected roughly 53,000 new jobs, while other surveys had forecasts closer to 65,000.

The Labor Department also delivered substantial upward revisions to its previous estimates.

June payroll growth was revised from 20,000 to 31,000 jobs, while July was revised from a loss of 23,000 jobs to a gain of 21,000.

Combined, the revisions added another 55,000 jobs to the previous estimates for June and July.

Restaurants and bars were among the biggest contributors to August’s gains, adding 59,000 jobs. Local government education added another 42,000 positions, while the information sector lost jobs.

Average hourly earnings also increased by 10 cents, or 0.3 percent, to $37.75. Wages were up 3.1 percent compared with a year earlier.

President Donald Trump quickly celebrated the stronger-than-expected report while renewing his push for lower interest rates.

“Great jobs number just announced, breaking all estimates (except mine!) by double and triple - And you haven’t seen anything yet!” Trump wrote Friday.

Trump also called on the Federal Reserve to lower rates, arguing that the strength of the U.S. economy warranted cheaper borrowing costs.

The jobs report, however, could complicate that argument at the Fed.

Investors increased their expectations for a possible interest-rate hike following the release, as policymakers continue weighing the strength of the labor market against persistent inflation. Treasury yields also moved higher after the numbers were released.

The Federal Reserve is scheduled to make its next interest-rate decision later this month, putting the surprisingly strong August employment report squarely at the center of the debate over the direction of monetary policy.

President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown appears to be producing a historic demographic reversal, with America’s foreign-born population falling by an estimated 2.9 million people since he returned to the White House.

A new analysis from the Center for Immigration Studies found that the foreign-born population dropped from approximately 53.3 million in January 2025 to roughly 50.5 million in July 2026.

The decline comes immediately after the foreign-born population surged by approximately 8.3 million people during the four years preceding Trump’s return to office.

If the latest trend holds, researchers say the United States has experienced negative net migration for the first sustained period in roughly 90 years.

Illegal Immigrant Population Falls by Estimated 2.3 Million

The biggest decline appears to have occurred among illegal immigrants.

CIS preliminarily estimates that the illegal immigrant population fell from approximately 15.8 million in January 2025 to 13.5 million in July 2026 — a decline of roughly 2.3 million people.

“The best data we have shows an enormous decrease in the total foreign-born population, with most of the falloff among illegal immigrants,” CIS Director of Research Steven Camarota said.

“Regaining control of the border and robust interior enforcement has partly undone the huge increase in the illegal immigration that took place during the border surge,” he added.

The decline was concentrated among noncitizens from Latin America who arrived in the United States in 1980 or later, a population CIS says substantially overlaps with the illegal immigrant population.

The numbers represent a dramatic reversal from the migration surge that occurred before Trump returned to the White House.

In approximately 18 months, more than one-third of the previous four years’ estimated 8.3 million increase in the foreign-born population appears to have been erased.

First Major Net Migration Reversal Since the 1930s

CIS concluded that net migration — the number of people arriving in the country minus those leaving — turned negative during the period examined.

If sustained, researchers say it would represent a migration reversal not seen in the United States since roughly the 1930s.

The 2.9 million decline should not, however, be confused with 2.9 million deportations.

The figure reflects several factors, including deportations, voluntary departures, fewer new arrivals, deaths and illegal immigrants obtaining legal status.

Federal data are also pointing in the same general direction.

Census Bureau estimates previously showed annual net international migration dropping from approximately 2.7 million in 2024 to 1.3 million in 2025, with the agency projecting it could fall to approximately 321,000 in 2026 if the trend continued.

The Census Bureau attributed the shift to both fewer immigrants entering the United States and more people leaving.

Meanwhile, Bureau of Labor Statistics data show the foreign-born civilian population age 16 and older declining from approximately 48.51 million in July 2025 to 48.11 million in July 2026. The native-born population in that age group increased by nearly 1.9 million over the same period.

Trump Policies Mark Sharp Break From Previous Years

The numbers arrive as the Trump administration has pursued a dramatically different immigration strategy from the one in place before January 2025, combining tougher border enforcement with expanded interior enforcement.

The decline has not translated into an equivalent reduction in the labor force.

According to CIS, only about 44 percent of those represented in the falling foreign-born population were workers. The remainder included children, senior citizens and others outside the workforce.

Employment gains among U.S.-born Americans also helped offset the decline.

There are limitations to the numbers.

CIS acknowledged that increased immigration enforcement could theoretically make some immigrants less willing to participate in government surveys, creating the appearance of a larger population decline.

Researchers said they found no clear evidence that such a change in participation explains the results, noting that immigration-related nonresponse remained low and relatively stable.

The Census Bureau has similarly cautioned that measuring migration in real time is difficult and that monthly household surveys can be affected by nonresponse and other statistical factors.

Still, multiple measurements now point in the same direction: immigration has slowed dramatically, departures have increased and the foreign-born population has fallen following years of rapid growth.

For Trump, who made restoring control of the border and enforcing immigration law central promises of his return to the White House, the numbers represent one of the clearest indications yet of just how dramatically U.S. immigration patterns have shifted since January 2025.

President Donald Trump blasted the Missouri Supreme Court after it unanimously blocked the state’s new Republican-backed congressional map from being used in the November midterm elections, potentially costing the GOP an additional seat in its battle to control the House.

The court on Thursday ordered Missouri to return to the congressional districts established in 2022 for the general election, tossing aside the new boundaries that had already been used during the state’s primary.

The stakes could be significant.

Missouri’s new congressional map was expected to give Republicans an advantage in seven of the state’s eight U.S. House districts, compared with a 6-2 Republican advantage under the previous map.

The new boundaries also targeted the Kansas City-area district held by longtime Democrat Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, potentially giving Republicans an opportunity to flip another House seat in November.

But the Missouri Supreme Court ruled that the new map had not legally taken effect and could not be used in the general election unless voters approve it.

“HB 1 did not go into effect and will not go into effect unless and until approved by the voters,” the court wrote. “The congressional redistricting the General Assembly established in 2022 remains in full force and effect for the November 2026 general election.”

Trump quickly unloaded on the decision, calling the ruling “ridiculous” and “unConstitutional” while arguing that Missouri should be allowed to use the map that was in place just months earlier.

“The Missouri Supreme Court just ridiculously ruled in favor of changing the maps back to what they were a long time ago. It’s called, Ancient History!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Trump also warned that the timing of the decision could create turmoil with the November election rapidly approaching.

“The problem is, according to Legal Scholars, that not only was the ruling horrible, ridiculous, and unConstitutional, but there won’t be enough time to change the map back with the Election coming up in a very short period of time,” Trump wrote.

“The Election Process, as usual, is being disturbed in America!”

Trump pointed specifically to the fact that the newer map had already been in effect during the state’s primary.

“Missouri must be able to use the map that was in effect just a couple of months ago, in the Primary,” Trump said, calling the ruling a “Dark Day for ‘Justice’ in Missouri!”

The legal battle may not be over.

Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway said following the decision that the state would seek relief from the U.S. Supreme Court, potentially setting up another major redistricting showdown just weeks before Election Day.

The dispute comes at a particularly consequential moment for Republicans.

Control of the House could be determined by a small number of seats in November, making Missouri’s potential seventh Republican district especially valuable to the GOP.

Under the Missouri Supreme Court’s ruling, however, the state will head into the midterms using the older map that produced six Republican-leaning districts and two Democratic-leaning districts.

Unless the U.S. Supreme Court intervenes, Republicans could enter Election Day without a congressional seat they had hoped would help strengthen their House majority.

Trump, meanwhile, is making clear that he wants the fight to continue.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries revealed Thursday that Democrats are preparing a coordinated response to the Republican Party’s first-ever midterm convention, as President Donald Trump and top Republicans prepare to descend on Dallas next week.

The historic two-day Republican gathering is scheduled for Sept. 9–10 at the American Airlines Center, where the GOP plans to showcase the Trump administration’s record, rally voters and put its 2026 candidates front and center ahead of November’s elections.

But Democrats apparently have no intention of letting Republicans dominate the political spotlight.

Asked Thursday what his party intends to do while Republicans gather in Texas, Jeffries said Democrats are planning “robust engagement” involving party officials at both the state and national levels.

“I expect that there’s going to be robust engagement by Democrats, in part led by the Texas Democratic Party, along with participation from House Democrats, Senate Democrats, as well as Democratic governors from different parts of the country,” Jeffries said.

Jeffries stopped short of revealing exactly what Democrats have planned, where their events will be held or which Democratic governors and members of Congress will participate.

Instead, the House Democrat leader previewed the party’s attack against the Republican convention, accusing the GOP of holding a “celebration” while Americans face economic challenges.

“The fact that these Republicans are planning a celebration in the middle of an economic crisis where everyday Americans are drowning because of this high cost of living is extraordinary,” Jeffries said.

Republicans, meanwhile, are billing the Dallas gathering as an unprecedented opportunity to take their midterm message directly to voters.

The Republican National Committee says the convention will “celebrate the accomplishments of President Donald J. Trump, showcase the strength of the Republican Party and its slate of candidates, and unite Americans around a bold vision for the future.”

The RNC has announced a packed schedule featuring 109 programming items and speakers over the two-day event. Vice President JD Vance is slated to headline the opening night before Trump closes out the convention on Sept. 10.

“Over two action-packed days, we will take Americans through the defining issues of our Party’s agenda and what is at stake in November,” RNC Chairman Joe Gruters said when the programming was announced.

“Each hour will have its own theme, its own message, and its own voices, building toward President Donald Trump’s vision for the next chapter of American greatness. This will be unlike any political convention America has seen before.”

Trump first announced plans for the event in June, describing it as a “rally like none other!”

The gathering represents a major departure from modern political tradition. National party conventions are generally reserved for presidential election years, but the RNC changed its rules earlier this year to permit a convention during the midterm cycle.

Jeffries also made clear that Democrats view the battle surrounding the Dallas convention as part of the larger fight for control of Congress.

Asked about Trump directing resources and tele-town halls toward roughly 35 competitive races, as well as political spending from Elon Musk, Jeffries insisted Democrats would have enough money to compete.

“We’re going to have the resources necessary in order to reelect our frontline members and flip more than enough seats to take back control of the House of Representatives,” Jeffries said.

But the national parties enter the midterm stretch with dramatically different financial positions.

According to Federal Election Commission filings cited by The Epoch Times, the RNC reported $125.5 million in cash on hand and no debt at the end of May. The Democratic National Committee reported just $14.9 million in cash while carrying $18.3 million in debt.

With control of Congress hanging in the balance, next week’s unprecedented Dallas convention is shaping up to be more than a Republican gathering.

Democrats are now openly preparing their own operation to compete with Trump and the GOP for the national spotlight.

North Carolina Democrat Senate candidate Roy Cooper is facing renewed scrutiny over his record on crime after audio surfaced of the former governor telling supporters that people in jail need “health care, not handcuffs.”

The remarks, first reported by Breitbart News, came as Cooper discussed his record as governor and North Carolina’s expansion of Medicaid.

“We got people in jails health care, not handcuffs,” Cooper can be heard saying at the campaign event.

The comment is likely to hand Republicans another line of attack in a Senate race where crime and public safety have already emerged as major issues.

Cooper, the former two-term governor and state attorney general, has faced criticism over policies implemented during his administration, including a massive early-release agreement involving thousands of inmates and recommendations from his racial equity task force that called for alternatives to arrest.

Cooper’s Record Comes Back Into Focus

In 2020, Cooper established the North Carolina Task Force for Racial Equity in Criminal Justice, which called for the state to “reimagine public safety.”

Among its recommendations were expanding diversion programs and other alternatives to arrest while encouraging law enforcement officers and prosecutors to consider citations and summonses instead of arrests in certain cases.

Republicans have repeatedly pointed to those policies as evidence that Cooper embraced the soft-on-crime approach that swept through Democrat-controlled cities and states following the 2020 riots.

Cooper has pushed back against those attacks, arguing that his years as attorney general demonstrate a record of prosecuting violent criminals.

“I’m the only one in this race who’s actually prosecuted violent criminals and worked to keep them behind bars,” Cooper has said.

But his newly surfaced “health care, not handcuffs” remark could complicate that defense.

Thousands of Inmates Released Under Cooper

Cooper has also faced intense criticism over a 2021 settlement that ultimately resulted in thousands of inmates being released early from North Carolina prisons.

The issue became even more politically explosive after DeCarlos Brown Jr., the man accused of killing Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska aboard a Charlotte light rail train, was reportedly identified as one of the inmates included in the early-release program.

Brown had accumulated a lengthy criminal history before Zarutska’s killing, including numerous previous arrests.

The case has become a centerpiece of Republican attacks on criminal justice policies in North Carolina, particularly in Mecklenburg County.

Law Enforcement Lines Up Behind Michael Whatley

Cooper’s Republican opponent, Michael Whatley, has meanwhile consolidated support from several major law enforcement organizations.

The North Carolina Troopers Association, North Carolina Police Benevolent Association, and North Carolina Fraternal Order of Police have all endorsed Whatley in the Senate race.

The National Border Patrol Council also recently threw its support behind Whatley, with organization president Paul Perez joining him for events across North Carolina.

Those endorsements give Republicans another opening to contrast the two candidates on public safety as control of the U.S. Senate hangs in the balance.

Cooper is attempting to campaign largely on economic and affordability issues, but Republicans appear determined to make his record as governor — particularly his handling of crime and criminal justice — a defining issue of the race.

His newly surfaced words may make that task considerably easier.

“Health care, not handcuffs” is now a phrase North Carolina voters could be hearing repeatedly between now and Election Day.

The Trump administration is moving to revoke federal tax-exempt status from private schools that engage in race-based discrimination, potentially putting thousands of institutions on notice.

The Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service are expected to unveil proposed regulations aimed at schools that discriminate based on race rather than using merit-based or race-neutral standards.

An administration official told the Daily Caller that the proposal stems from President Donald Trump’s executive actions seeking to restore merit-based policies and eliminate discriminatory practices.

The sweeping rule could potentially affect as many as 18,000 private schools across the country.

Under the proposal, tax-exempt private schools could face consequences for race-based discrimination involving admissions, scholarships, athletics, loans, educational policies and other programs administered by the institution.

The move comes as the Trump administration has intensified its campaign against race-conscious policies throughout American education.

The Department of Justice has already conducted reviews that found race-based discrimination at several prominent institutions.

According to the Daily Caller report, DOJ investigations found discriminatory practices involving admissions at the Yale University School of Medicine, George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and Duke University School of Law.

The Treasury Department and IRS are pointing to longstanding Supreme Court precedent in support of the proposed rule, including Brown v. Board of Education, Bob Jones University v. United States, and Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard.

The regulations would not prohibit schools from providing assistance to disadvantaged students.

Schools could continue offering educational programs, scholarships and other forms of assistance using race-neutral criteria such as income, geographic location, individual hardship, first-generation status, military status or academic achievement.

The proposal would also preserve certain curricula and observances tied to genuine religious affiliations.

The distinction is significant: the administration’s proposal targets discrimination based specifically on race rather than programs designed to assist students based on economic hardship or other race-neutral circumstances.

If finalized, the regulations would apply to taxable years beginning May 31, 2027.

The proposal represents another major step in Trump’s effort to dismantle race-based policies in American institutions — this time using one of the federal government’s most powerful financial levers: tax-exempt status.

President Donald Trump is preparing to hit the campaign trail for a month-long push aimed at helping Republicans hold Congress in November’s high-stakes midterm elections.

Trump announced Wednesday that he plans to spend the final 30 days before Election Day campaigning for Republican candidates across the country, with control of both the House and Senate hanging in the balance.

“I’m gonna be campaigning for numerous people, both Congress — a few governors, I love the governors — but we’re interested in the Senate and we’re interested in the House,” Trump said.

The announcement signals that Trump intends to personally throw his political weight behind Republicans during the decisive closing stretch of the 2026 campaign.

One of the stops already on Trump’s radar is Alaska.

“I will be going to Alaska,” Trump said, indicating plans to campaign on behalf of Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan as he fights to hold his seat.

The Alaska race has drawn additional attention after another candidate named “Dan Sullivan” appeared on the ballot, a development Republicans have alleged could confuse voters.

But Trump’s planned campaign swing will extend well beyond Alaska.

With Republicans fighting to maintain control of Congress, the president is expected to campaign for candidates in key House and Senate contests during the final weeks before voters head to the polls.

The stakes are particularly high for Trump.

The party occupying the White House has historically faced political headwinds during midterm elections, meaning Republicans will have to overcome the traditional midterm disadvantage to preserve their congressional majorities.

Losing either chamber could dramatically complicate the second half of Trump’s term, while losing both would hand Democrats control of Congress and the ability to derail major pieces of the president’s agenda.

Republicans have reasons for optimism heading into the final stretch. The GOP remains narrowly favored to retain control of the Senate, while redistricting has improved the party’s position in several House races.

Trump, however, appears unwilling to leave the outcome to chance.

For the final 30 days of the midterm campaign, the president plans to take his case directly to voters — putting himself at the center of the Republican effort to keep control of Capitol Hill.

House lawmakers overwhelmingly approved a Trump-backed government funding package Tuesday, clearing the way for the legislation to head to President Donald Trump’s desk and averting another potential government shutdown.

The House voted 370-48 to approve H.R. 6500, the Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, 2027.

The measure won support from 193 Republicans, 176 Democrats and one independent.

The Senate had previously approved its amended version of the legislation in a lopsided 90-6 vote on August 8.

With the House now agreeing to the Senate amendments, congressional action on the package is complete. The White House has formally backed the legislation, making Trump’s signature expected.

The bill keeps the federal government funded beyond the September 30 expiration of current funding.

Most federal agencies will continue operating at existing spending levels through December 11, giving Congress additional time to negotiate full-year appropriations.

The agreement also pushes the next major government funding showdown beyond the November 3 midterm elections.

Republicans characterized the measure as a way to avoid another disruptive shutdown while maintaining current spending levels.

House Appropriations Chairman Tom Cole said the legislation would provide Americans with “certainty” while lawmakers continue working on longer-term appropriations bills.

The measure maintains funding for military personnel, Social Security, transportation security, disaster relief, nutrition programs and other government operations.

It also includes provisions intended to prevent furloughs, allowing agencies to adjust civilian personnel funding after first reducing or delaying certain administrative expenses.

National security funding is protected under the package as well.

The legislation provides flexibility for Navy shipbuilding programs, including Virginia-class and Columbia-class submarines, and permits as much as $2.853 billion for Defense-wide National Security Systems during the temporary funding period.

The Justice Department receives flexibility for federal judicial security, U.S. Marshals Service protection, legal operations and certain FBI preparations.

FEMA’s Disaster Relief Fund and federal wildfire suppression accounts are also permitted to operate at levels necessary to respond to emergencies.

Veterans programs receive a series of temporary extensions covering healthcare, mental health services, housing assistance, transportation and homelessness programs.

The National Flood Insurance Program is extended through December 11, along with federal highway, mass-transit and Essential Air Service authorities.

Several trade provisions receive longer extensions, including the African Growth and Opportunity Act and the Haiti Economic Lift Program, which are extended through 2028.

The Trump administration described the package as a “clean, short-term continuing resolution” and urged Congress to avoid another costly shutdown battle.

While the legislation removes the immediate September 30 deadline, lawmakers will still have to reach a broader spending agreement before funding expires again on December 11.

Americans’ confidence in the federal government appears to be deteriorating rapidly, with a record 89 percent now saying corruption is widespread throughout the government, according to a new Gallup poll.

The figure represents the highest level recorded by Gallup in two decades of polling on the question.

The 89 percent finding is also a dramatic 10-point increase from last year and substantially higher than the levels recorded over the previous 15 years. Between 2010 and 2025, the percentage of Americans who considered government corruption widespread generally ranged from 72 percent to 79 percent.

But the partisan breakdown reveals an even more dramatic shift.

Democrats have become significantly more likely to believe the government is plagued by widespread corruption since President Donald Trump returned to the White House.

During former President Joe Biden’s final year in office, just 57 percent of Democrats described government corruption as widespread.

That number jumped to 76 percent during the first year of Trump’s second term.

Now, an overwhelming 91 percent of Democrats say corruption is widespread in the U.S. government — a stunning 34-point increase from 2024.

Republicans, meanwhile, have consistently expressed high levels of concern about government corruption.

Roughly 80 percent of Republicans have said corruption is widespread during each of the past two years. That is actually slightly lower than the 87 percent recorded among Republicans in 2024.

The result means Democrats have now surpassed Republicans in their perception of widespread government corruption, representing a dramatic reversal from the Biden years.

The Gallup findings also point to a broader problem that transcends partisan politics: Nearly nine out of every ten Americans now believe corruption is widespread in their government.

With 89 percent holding that view, distrust of the government has reached a level unseen in Gallup’s two decades of tracking the issue.

He wrote that the ruling didn’t ‘protect religious freedom’ but rather ‘established a religion of secularism.’

And how right he was!

But even Justice Potter wouldn’t have predicted how far the ‘religion of secularism’ has taken us from Biblical values.

President Donald Trump announced agreements with nine additional pharmaceutical companies aimed at lowering prescription drug prices for Americans, expanding his administration’s sweeping push to bring U.S. drug costs closer to prices paid in other developed countries.

The new agreements bring the total number of pharmaceutical companies participating in Trump’s drug-pricing initiative to 26 — companies the president says represent roughly 90 percent of the domestic pharmaceutical market.

“Nine new pharmaceutical companies are committing to deliver their lowest drug prices for American patients,” Trump said while announcing the agreements at the White House.

The nine companies joining the initiative are Alcon, Astellas Pharma, BeOne Medicines, BridgeBio, CSL, Kyowa Kirin, Sun Pharma, Teva Pharmaceuticals, and UCB.

The agreements are part of Trump’s “most-favored-nation” drug-pricing policy, which seeks to prevent Americans from paying substantially higher prices for medications than patients in other developed nations.

Under the new deals, state Medicaid programs will gain access to most-favored-nation pricing on products manufactured by the nine companies. The White House projects the agreements could ultimately save Americans billions of dollars.

The companies will also provide discounts directly to American consumers as part of the administration’s broader effort to cut the cost of name-brand prescription medications.

Monday’s announcement builds on agreements previously reached with 17 pharmaceutical companies.

Trump said the 26 companies now participating account for approximately 90 percent of the U.S. pharmaceutical market — and predicted the remaining companies will eventually join them.

“With today’s announcement, we now have 26 companies representing 90% of the domestic pharmaceutical market, and the other 10% are also coming in,” Trump said. “They have no choice.”

The administration’s strategy is based on a longstanding complaint from Trump that American consumers effectively subsidize lower prescription drug prices in foreign countries by paying substantially higher prices at home.

The most-favored-nation approach seeks to change that by tying American prices more closely to the lower prices pharmaceutical companies offer in comparable developed nations.

The administration has also launched TrumpRx, which allows Americans to access discounts on certain name-brand medications directly.

With nine more companies now signing agreements, Trump’s drug-pricing initiative has expanded from a handful of major manufacturers to companies representing the overwhelming majority of the domestic pharmaceutical market.
