Two clouds on my horizon, one political and one geopolitical, both dated October–November.

Cloud one: the midterm itself. Markets do not vote, but they price the voters. My read is that as November approaches, the tape will begin discounting the risk of a Democratic sweep of Congress — an outcome Wall Street, rightly or wrongly, prices as unfriendly to business: the perceived overhang of higher corporate taxes, heavier regulation, and a less accommodating posture toward the market’s favorite industries. You may dispute the politics; the market will trade the perception, and perception is what October is for. Pre-election de-risking is a ritual older than my medical license — portfolio managers lighten up into uncertainty and re-gross after the votes are counted, which is a large part of why election-adjacent Octobers (see the orange bars) skew soft even when the full-year story ends well. Cloud two: the Persian wildcard. This one I offer strictly as speculation — a tail scenario, not a forecast, and I label it accordingly. The "October surprise" is a genre for a reason. My concern is that Iran, reading the same electoral calendar as everyone else, could conclude that provoking the United States into kinetic action — a strike, a retaliation cycle, a shipping-lane incident in the Strait — serves its interests by injecting chaos into the American election, with the side effect of an oil spike and a volatility event precisely when positioning is most crowded. Do I predict this? No. Do I know the probability? Nobody does — that is exactly what makes it a proper subject for insurance rather than prediction. This is not vice. This is the productive use of leverage, and it built every skyline you have ever admired. Debt, deployed this way, is self-liquidating: the asset it creates generates the income that extinguishes it. The banker gets his interest, the builder gets his equity, the city gets its tower, and the ledger — that stern Presbyterian document — balances with everyone better off. I have financed positions on margin for half a century on exactly this logic: borrow against productive assets to acquire more productive assets. The debt works for you.

Now Hand the Credit Card to Congress

Government borrowing is a different animal wearing the same collar. When Washington borrows a trillion dollars, no tower rises. The overwhelming bulk of the federal budget is transfer payments and interest — money in, money out, consumed on contact. Entitlements, subsidies, and increasingly the interest on the debt itself: checks written against the future that build nothing which pays the future back. There is no tenant. There is no rent roll. There is no closing where the project’s cash flow retires the note. There is only the taxpayer — the involuntary tenant of last resort — and the rollover auction, where old debt is paid off with new debt in a ceremony we have agreed not to call what it is.

And here the physician in me must speak, because the mechanism matters. When the government injects borrowed demand into an economy without creating corresponding supply — no new towers, no new factories, no new output — the money doesn’t vanish. It bids. More dollars chasing the same goods is the textbook etiology of inflation, and deficit spending at 6-7% of GDP in peacetime is a standing prescription for it. Worse, the bond market notices. Lenders demand compensation for the inflation being brewed and for the sheer volume of paper being issued, so long rates rise — the term premium is simply the market’s invoice for fiscal incontinence. Thus the perverse loop: the spending causes the inflation, the inflation causes the rates, and the rates make the debt service larger, which requires more borrowing, which… you can diagnose the rest. In medicine we call this a positive feedback loop, which is the profession’s grim joke, because nothing about it is positive.

Same instrument. Same bank. Opposite diseases.

Which delivers us to the uncomfortable arithmetic at the center of everything I have written this month: the only durable way to get both lower interest rates and lower inflation is to cut the spending. Not to jawbone the Fed. Not to engineer the issuance calendar. Not to find a cleverer way to suppress the symptom. Rates are high because the government is borrowing too much and the market is pricing the consequences; inflation persists because borrowed demand keeps arriving without borrowed supply. Cut the borrowing and both fevers break together — the inflation premium comes out of yields, the flood of new paper recedes, and the builder’s honest spread returns for everyone. The cure has been sitting on the shelf, clearly labeled, for decades. Nobody will swallow it.

The Era of the Painless Prescription

Why not? Because we live in an age that has inverted the diagnosis. Spending is no longer understood as the disease; it is understood as the treatment — for every ailment, in every season. Economy slow? Spend. Economy hot? Spend, but call it investment. Crisis? Emergency spending. No crisis? Preventive spending. Both parties practice this medicine; they merely quarrel over which organs receive the injections. The political economy of it is brutally simple and was diagnosed long ago: every dollar spent has a concentrated, grateful, voting recipient, while its costs — the inflation, the rates, the compounding interest bill — are diffuse, delayed, and unattributable. No congressman ever lost his seat to the term premium. Milton Friedman told us nothing is so permanent as a temporary government program, and he said it when the debt was a rounding error of today’s.

Now, honesty compels the cross-examination, because some readers are composing the rebuttal already. Isn’t some government spending investment? Yes — genuinely. The interstate highways, the NIH grants that trained my generation of physicians, DARPA’s toy network you are reading this on. A dollar of true public capex can pay for itself many times over, and I will not pretend otherwise. But look at the actual budget: the capex share is a sliver riding atop an avalanche of transfers and interest, and even the good sliver faces no bank, no foreclosure, no repayment schedule — no mechanism that forces the bad projects to die. The builder’s discipline isn’t his virtue; it’s his lender. Government is a borrower whose lender has been promised it can never fail. Keynesians will add that deficits belong in recessions — and they’re right, that was Keynes’s actual prescription: deficits in the bust, surpluses in the boom. We kept the first half of the prescription and lost the bottle for the second. A medicine taken only in the pleasant dose is called an addiction.

So the builder-President wants low rates, and one sympathizes with the instinct — it served him honestly for fifty years. But the government he leads is not a builder, and its debt buys no towers. Until the spending is cut, every campaign for lower rates is a campaign to make the wrong kind of borrowing cheaper — seed corn for the man with the crane, happy hour for the man with the tab. The bond market, the last sober creditor in the room, keeps presenting the bill. In my experience, it always gets paid. The only question this era refuses to ask is by whom.

The usual fine print: This is market analysis, fiscal opinion, and education from an old man who has watched deficits get called temporary under ten presidents of both parties — not personalized investment advice, and not a partisan brief; the spending arithmetic indicts everyone in Washington equally. Reasonable economists dispute pieces of this — the size of fiscal multipliers, how much deficits move long rates, and when public investment earns its keep — and readers should weigh that literature themselves. As a physician, I appreciate a clean taxonomy, so here is one. Horizontal software serves a function across every industry. Everybody — the dentist, the defense contractor, the doughnut chain — needs to track customers, pay employees, close the books, and file tickets when the printer catches fire. CRM, HR, accounting, collaboration, security: one product, ten thousand industries. The customer pool is an ocean; the product is a commodity function done at scale.

Vertical software serves an industry across every function. It is the whole operating system for one trade: software for restaurants (point-of-sale, tips, kitchen tickets), for construction (bids, blueprints, change orders), for community banks, for pharma clinical trials, for county governments still processing parking tickets on systems older than my residency. The pool is a pond — but the vertical player owns the pond, the fish, the dock, and usually the payments flowing across it.

For twenty years, vertical SaaS was the connoisseur’s trade. The logic: niches are defensible. Nobody at a horizontal giant wakes up eager to learn the regulatory plumbing of title insurance, so the vertical specialist digs in, becomes the system of record for an entire industry, and compounds quietly with 120% net revenue retention while the tourists chase whatever Gartner renamed that quarter. It worked. Veeva became one of the great software businesses of the era selling to an industry — pharma — that most investors couldn’t spell.

The Thesis: Why AI Eats the Niches First

Now the argument for why AI breaks this. It has three teeth.

Tooth one: the moat was the cost of writing code, and that cost just collapsed. A vertical SaaS product is, if we are being unsentimental, twenty years of accumulated industry workflow knowledge expressed as software that was expensive to build. When AI can generate working software from a plain-English description of the workflow, the expensive part stops being expensive. A mid-sized construction firm that once had no choice but to pay the vertical vendor forever can now have an AI-assisted team build the 70% of the product it actually uses — tailored, owned, and without the annual price ratchet. The moat wasn’t the knowledge; the knowledge is in the heads of the customer’s own employees. The moat was the translation cost — and translation is precisely what AI commoditized.

Tooth two: small ponds attract AI-native piranhas. Every vertical niche is now a target for a five-person AI-first startup that can rebuild the incumbent’s product in months, undercut on price, and — because the niche is small — hurt the incumbent badly with even modest share gains. The vertical player’s beloved small TAM cuts both ways: it kept the giants out, but it means there’s no ocean to retreat into when the pond gets crowded.

Tooth three: the horizontals become the landlords of the agents. The big horizontal platforms sit on the two assets AI cannot conjure: distribution (every enterprise already runs them) and proprietary system-of-record data at civilizational scale. When AI agents start doing the work — drafting the outreach, triaging the tickets, closing the books — they will do it on top of the platforms where the data already lives. In this telling, Salesforce, ServiceNow, Microsoft and their ilk stop selling seats and start selling the ground the robots stand on. The horizontal platform becomes the operating system for enterprise AI; the vertical app becomes a feature.

The Buckets

So, taking the podcast thesis at face value — and I stress at face value, hold that thought — here is how the public-market board sorts. This is a taxonomy exercise, not a buy list and not a short list. Adults do their own diligence.

Cross-Examination — Because the Podcast Won’t Do It

Now, the part your correspondent insists upon. Fifty years of markets have taught me that any thesis delivered with total confidence by people who agree with each other deserves a hostile witness. So here is the case against the case.

Objection one: the seat problem lives at the horizontals’ house. The horizontal giants charge per seat. If AI agents genuinely do the work, the number of human seats — sales reps, support agents, HR coordinators — shrinks. The very disruption that supposedly crowns CRM as king also vaporizes its billing unit. The bulls answer “they’ll price per agent, per outcome, per whatever” — perhaps! But a forced business-model transplant mid-flight is not obviously a blessing, and I have watched enough platform transitions to know the incumbent doesn’t always survive its own surgery.

Objection two: proprietary data cuts the other way, too. The vertical players own something the frontier models were never trained on: the actual operational data of an industry — the claims histories, the change orders, the clinical-trial minutiae. In a world where generic intelligence is abundant, specific data and regulatory certification may be the scarcest assets left. Veeva’s moat was never merely code; it was validation, compliance, and an industry’s trust. Try getting the FDA excited about your vibe-coded clinical trial system, and report back.

Objection three: “just build it yourself” has been predicted before. Open source was supposed to kill enterprise software. Low-code was supposed to kill it again. Each time, it turned out that businesses don’t want to own software — they want to own outcomes, and someone to sue when the thing breaks at quarter-end. AI lowers the build cost, yes, but the maintain-secure-comply-and-answer-the-phone-at-2am cost remains gloriously intact.

So where does the old man land? The thesis is directionally interesting and lazily binary. The real dividing line is not vertical versus horizontal — it is thin software versus deep moats. Thin workflow wrappers will get ground up whether they’re vertical or horizontal. Businesses holding data, distribution, payments, or a regulator’s blessing will endure in either orientation. The buckets above are the podcast’s map. The territory, as always, will be settled by earnings reports, net retention numbers, and the occasional guidance cut at 4:05 PM — the hour at which all theses, mine included, are marked to market.

Keep that last item in mind. Warsh and Druckenmiller literally put their names on the same argument a decade ago: that the Fed's bond buying had become a subsidy to Washington's worst habits. Bessent, meanwhile, spent his formative years executing Druckenmiller's macro views. These men share a lineage, a worldview, and — until roughly five minutes ago — a diagnosis. What they no longer share is a chair. And in this business, the chair changes the man faster than the man changes the chair..

The Bessent Gambit

The Treasury Secretary has been admirably candid about his target: the 10-year yield. Not the funds rate — the long end, the rate that prices mortgages, corporate debt, and the government’s own gargantuan refinancing calendar. His toolkit: buy back old, illiquid long bonds; tilt new issuance toward T-bills; and generally manage the maturity profile of the national debt the way a portfolio manager manages duration — which, of course, is exactly what he used to be.

Strip away the ceremony and this is quantitative easing with a different letterhead. When the Fed did it, we called it QE: withdraw duration from the market, suppress the term premium, ease financial conditions. When the Treasury does it — issuing paper the money markets inhale like oxygen while retiring the paper nobody wants to hold for thirty years — the mechanism is the same. Only the return address on the envelope has changed. Marriner Eccles has moved to 1500 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Druckenmiller’s Objection

Enter the old boss. Druckenmiller’s critique is the one he has been making, in various registers of exasperation, for fifteen years: you are treating the fever and ignoring the infection. Long rates are not high because of some technical malfunction in the bond market that clever issuance can repair. They are high because the United States is running wartime deficits in peacetime, and the bond market — that slow, sullen, ultimately undefeated beast — is charging for the privilege.

His deeper point is about information. A rising long rate is the only disciplinary signal Congress still receives. The bond vigilantes are, at this point, the entire adult supervision of American fiscal policy. Every scheme to suppress the long end — whether run from the Fed or the Treasury — is a scheme to shoot the last remaining messenger. Drown out the signal, and the spending doesn’t stop. It accelerates, because it has been made painless.

The Warsh Doctrine

Which brings us to the new Fed chief, whose paper trail on this subject is long, consistent, and inconvenient for everyone — possibly including himself. Warsh’s argument, made for over a decade: when the central bank hoovers up government bonds, it blurs the line between monetary and fiscal policy, and it gives Congress a free pass. Cheap, guaranteed financing is an enabler’s gift. His remedy: shrink the balance sheet, get the Fed out of the bond-warehousing business, and let the market price the government’s paper honestly.

As a matter of principle, this is bracing stuff, and your correspondent — who watched the Fed’s balance sheet balloon from a rounding error into a nine-trillion-dollar leviathan — has considerable sympathy for it. But principles, like options, have expiration dates and strike prices. And Warsh’s strike is about to be tested.

The Collision

Here is the inherent conflict, stated plainly. When the Fed stops buying — or actively sheds — Treasuries, that duration does not evaporate. It must be absorbed by pension funds, banks, foreigners, and speculators, all of whom will demand a higher term premium for the honor. Fed balance-sheet reduction is, mechanically, upward pressure on long rates. It is the precise opposite of what the Treasury Secretary says he is trying to achieve.

So what happens? Bessent, watching his beloved 10-year back up, leans harder into buybacks and bill issuance. The Treasury ends up purchasing, in effect, the very duration the Fed is disgorging. The state’s left hand buys from the state’s right hand, each branch insisting it is the virtuous one. The Fed piously demonetizes; the Treasury quietly re-monetizes; and the consolidated government balance sheet — the only one that actually matters — shows the same old game under a new shell.

And here is the delicious part: Warsh’s own argument convicts his old friend’s protégé. If central-bank bond buying gives Congress a free pass, then Treasury duration-suppression gives Congress the identical free pass. The moral hazard does not care which building runs the operation. Warsh can shrink his balance sheet to a postage stamp, and if Bessent successfully pins the long end anyway, the disciplinary signal Warsh wants to restore is still dead — just murdered by a different member of the family. Students of history will recognize the shape of this fight, because we have run the experiment before — in reverse. From 1942 to 1951 the Fed pegged long Treasury yields to finance the war, until inflation forced the famous Treasury–Fed Accord of 1951, the document that established central-bank independence as we know it. That fight was about the Treasury forcing the Fed to keep rates down. Today’s version is stranger: the Fed proposing to step back while the Treasury builds its own suppression apparatus so it never has to ask. Call it the Accord, relitigated — with the Treasury pre-empting the verdict.

The endgame risk has a name: fiscal dominance. Run deficits large enough, and monetary policy stops being a choice and becomes a hostage. If Warsh holds the line and long rates rip, the government’s interest bill explodes, the refinancing calendar becomes a doom loop, and the political pressure on the Fed goes from tweetstorm to existential. If he blinks, his life’s argument dies in his own hands. Independence is easy to defend in an op-ed. It is harder to defend when the arithmetic itself has switched sides.

What the Tape Decides

Druckenmiller, as usual, has the cleanest position, because he is the only one of the three not currently holding a government job. He can say the true thing — the problem is the spending — without owning a lever that must be pulled on Monday morning. Bessent and Warsh, by contrast, are each trying to manage one symptom of a disease neither has the authority to cure. One suppresses the price of the debt; the other refuses to warehouse it; neither can touch its quantity. That power sits with 535 people who have discovered that the voters punish austerity and the bond market’s punishments can, apparently, be outsourced.

For traders, the scoreboard is simple. Watch the term premium. Watch the auction tails on 10s and 30s. Watch whether the 2s10s and 5s30s steepen despite the buybacks — because a curve that steepens into active suppression is a market delivering its verdict early. In fifty-plus years of watching this game, I have learned exactly one law that has never been repealed: the bond market eventually calls every bluff, and it does not care how distinguished the bluffer’s résumé is, or whose fund he used to run.

Three men, one lineage, one bond market. They all learned at the same table that markets punish the player who mistakes his position for a principle. Now we find out which of them remembers the lesson while sitting in the chair — and which one only remembered it from the other side of the trade.

Here’s the thing: most of this advice is correct. It’s been earned the expensive way by a lot of traders, and I’m not going to pretend otherwise — I’ve been at this over fifty years and I still collect other traders’ rules the way some men collect watches.

But notice what all of it has in common. It’s entirely about structure selection and trade management — condors, butterflies, stops, targets — and almost none of it addresses why the index moves the way it does on expiration day. No gamma exposure. No dealer positioning. No charm. The conventional wisdom treats SPX as a random walk you build structures around, when 0DTE is the most mechanically driven, positioning-dominated tape in the entire market.

That’s not a small omission. That’s teaching someone to sail without mentioning the tide charts.

So: six standard rules, each genuinely worth internalizing — followed by the half of the lesson the folk wisdom doesn’t teach.

Rule 1: “Take off the risk”

The classic 0DTE survival maxim: when you hit your target, or when a profitable position starts to wane, close it. Prices move fast into 4pm Eastern, and a winner can become a disaster in minutes. The mechanism behind the rule is real: OTM premium bleeds out beautifully all day — that’s why premium selling works — but near-the-money premium explodes into the bell as the market decides what finishes in the money.

The gamma half: This isn’t just good discipline; it has a structural clock attached, and you can read it. In a positive-gamma regime, dealer hedging dampens moves all day — that’s the friendly tape where waning winners drift back. But charm flows (the decay of dealer delta hedges as time runs out) reverse character in the final stretch. My working rule: any dealer-magnet or attraction-level logic is valid only until roughly 30 minutes before the close. After that, charm and raw decay dominate, hedges unwind, and the tape goes feral around whichever strikes are in play. “Take off the risk” isn’t a vibe — it has a timestamp. If your thesis depends on a pin, the pin’s warranty expires around 3:30.

Rule 2: Know your next move before the market asks

Another standard you’ll hear from every experienced options trader: don’t think when the market moves against you — know, in advance, what you’re going to do. Decide your adjustment sequence before entry: hedge with a long option, flatten delta with a combo, sell a spread against it, cut the short, or exit entirely. If you’re improvising under fire, you’ve already lost the trade. Like jazz — if you have to think about the next chord, you’re in trouble.

The gamma half: True — and incomplete, because the right adjustment depends on the regime. The same breach of your short strike means opposite things in opposite gamma environments. In deep positive gamma with vol crushed, a probe through your strike is usually dealer churn: the mechanical response is to hold or re-sell, because the pin is doing your work for you. In negative gamma, the identical breach is the start of the move — dealers are hedging with the market, amplifying it, and the correct chord is defense, immediately. Knowing five adjustment techniques is table stakes. Positioning data tells you which one applies today. An adjustment playbook without a regime read is a jazz musician with perfect technique and no idea what key the band is in.

Rule 3: Win rate is a vanity metric

Every serious trader eventually learns this one. Plenty of profitable 0DTE strategies lose more often than they win — losers frequent, winners two and three times their size — and plenty of seductive high-win-rate strategies carry average losers nearly double their average winners, quietly waiting to give it all back. Both can work; both can fail. Expectancy is the whole game, and the retail signature — many small wins concealing the occasional account-ender — is exactly backwards from how professionals build a book.

The gamma half: Positioning data is how you protect the expectancy math from your own worst day. My postmortems, which I publish losses and all, keep finding the same villain: not bad structures, but counter-thesis trades — buying premium in a pin regime because a dip looked exciting. A high-win-rate strategy dies the day you run it in the wrong regime and the loss side shows up three times in a row, sized up. The gamma read won’t improve your win rate. It stops you from taking the trades where your loss distribution lives.

Rule 4: Entry timing is regime selection

Watch what disciplined 0DTE traders actually do and you’ll notice nobody trades “whenever they see a setup.” Some work the first five minutes of the open, harvesting the overnight vol premium while IV is richest. Others wait until mid-morning, when the opening flows have settled. Others enter near the close to jump the next day’s theta. Different windows, same principle: every durable approach lives in a specific slice of the day where its edge exists, and nowhere else.

The gamma half: Most traders find their window empirically — years of bruises until something works. Positioning tells you why the windows work, and lets you choose deliberately. The open is where realized vol clusters — great for defined-risk premium selling, terrible for anything that hates movement. My own window is midday, and not by accident: it’s the daily volatility trough, morning flows are digested, and by then the gamma structure, cumulative net delta, and vanna/charm picture have shown their hand for the afternoon. Enter at noon and you’re not predicting the day — you’re reading a half-finished exam and betting on how it’s graded. The folk wisdom says timing matters. Flow data tells you what each window is made of.

Rule 5: The close is a flow event — trade it like one

The sharper end of the conventional playbook: watch the market-on-close imbalances published in the last half hour. When there are billions of shares to buy on the close, cheap OTM calls can go from $1 to $5–10 in the final minutes; billions to sell, same story in puts. Traders who play this treat it with respect — small size, defined risk, often boxing in a worst case — because they know exactly what they’re trading: a known, mechanical, must-execute order flow about to hit the tape.

The gamma half: Notice what makes this the best idea in the standard playbook — it’s the only one based on reading a forced flow rather than hoping a structure holds. Now extend the logic, because dealer hedging is the same animal, all day, every day: forced, mechanical, measurable. GEX tells you where hedging suppresses movement and where it accelerates it. CND tells you which direction the persistent pressure runs. Charm tells you where the expiring hedges will drag spot in the afternoon. Anyone who trades MOC imbalances already understands flow-based edge. The rest of the tape works exactly the same way — most people just aren’t looking.

Rule 6: Don’t be a hero for pennies

The standard ladder for letting short options expire worthless goes something like: below 5 delta with an hour left, below 3 with thirty minutes, below 2 with fifteen — otherwise cover, because when these go wrong, they go very wrong. Sound rule. The commissions you save letting trash expire are not worth the one afternoon a 4-delta short ends up at the money.

The gamma half: A sound ladder — improve it with a map. A short strike sitting beyond a thick, defended wall in a positive-gamma pin is a very different animal from the same delta on open tape. And know your walls’ failure mode: put walls in particular are trapdoors, not floors — the moment fresh put buying migrates below a wall, its support function is gone and your “safe” 3-delta short is sitting in the fall line. The point

The conventional 0DTE wisdom is mostly good wisdom. But it’s all how and no why. Structures and management rules are the symptom chart; positioning is the imaging. Trade on the symptom chart alone and you’ll be right often, for wrong or absent reasons — until the day the mechanism matters and you’re the last to know.

So today’s piece is an exercise I recommend to every trader who reads widely: take a strategy built for a different instrument, throw away the rules, and keep the insight.

What Calhoun actually does

His method, condensed: scan 5-minute charts of mid-priced stocks where ADX(14) has been quiet but is turning up. In the first 20 minutes of the next session, if ADX breaks above 40 while price breaks the prior day’s high, buy the breakout with a tight stop. Exit when the ADX line rolls over. His best-quality setup adds a DMI+ crossover for confirmation.

Fine system, as these things go. But here’s the part worth your attention: he is not using ADX to determine direction. Most retail traders think ADX is a trend indicator. Calhoun uses it as a volatility-expansion detector — a way of asking, “is this breakout real, or am I about to donate money to a chop range?” The 40 threshold, the two-day high — that’s all just his dialect for “realized volatility is breaking out of its recent regime.”

Regime detection. Now we’re speaking my language.

Why the rules don’t survive contact with SPX 0DTE

Let’s dispense with the obvious. His playbook is built for individual stocks in the $20–70 range, traded off the opening bell, with twenty-cent stops. We trade the index, we enter around midday when volatility is at its daily low — quite deliberately — and our risk is defined in premium, not nickels. The opening 20 minutes, his prime hunting ground, is precisely the window I tell you not to trade.

More fundamentally: ADX only sees price. It knows nothing about dealer positioning, gamma exposure, charm decay, or the options-flow machinery that actually governs how SPX behaves into the close. An indicator that’s smoothed twice (ADX is a moving average of a moving average, by construction) will always be late to a story that GEX and cumulative net delta tell you in advance. Calling it a “leading indicator,” as the article does, is generous. It leads chop. It does not lead price.

So why bother? Because sometimes you want a witness who doesn’t know the defendant.

The translation: ADX as an independent regime check

Everything in my framework — gamma structure, CND, vanna, charm — is derived from the options market. That’s its strength and its blind spot. When your entire analytical stack shares one data source, you have no outside referee when the tape and the positioning disagree.

ADX on a 5-minute SPX chart is that referee. It’s price-only, dumb as a post, and completely independent of the flow data. Used correctly, it answers exactly one question: is realized volatility confirming or contradicting my regime read?

Three practical applications:

1. The noon-entry confirm. You come into midday with a deep positive-gamma, low-VIX1D read — a pin day, in other words. Glance at intraday ADX. Flat and low? The tape agrees; sell premium, fade the edges, business as usual. But if ADX has been curling up all morning into your entry window, the price action is quietly disagreeing with the pin thesis. That doesn’t override the gamma read — but it should make you size smaller and respect the breakout scenarios you’d otherwise discount.

2. A mechanical gate against the trade that kills you. If you’ve followed my postmortems, you know I grade my own work call by call, losses included, and the recurring villain is always the same: buying premium in a pin regime. Fighting the regime because a dip “looks like” the start of something. Here Calhoun’s core rule inverts beautifully into a discipline tool: no long premium unless ADX is rising. Volatility must already be expanding before you pay for it. That single filter would have blocked most of my counter-thesis losers, and I’ve been doing this for fifty years. Imagine what it does for yours.

3. The late-day charm override tell. Forget absolute levels — ADX 40 on index 5-minute bars in a quiet regime is a number you’ll wait weeks to see. What translates is Calhoun’s relative version: ADX breaking above its own prior intraday high. On SPX, that fires on the days that trend into the bell — the days when the charm magnet stops working and the pin gets overrun. If you’re leaning on a dealer-attraction level into the close and ADX is making new highs after 14:30, the tape is telling you the magnet has lost. Believe it.

The honest summary

ADX will not make you money on its own, and anyone selling you an “ADX 0DTE system” should be avoided the way I avoid hospital cafeteria food. It’s a lagging, price-only, twice-smoothed relic from 1978.

It is also free, universally available, impossible to argue with, and — used as a confirmation layer rather than a signal source — a genuinely useful check on a flow-based framework that otherwise grades its own homework. The workflow addition costs you ten seconds at entry and at each checkpoint: note ADX(14) on the 5-minute chart against its morning high. Rising: breakout scenarios live, long premium permitted. Flat or falling: pin rules apply, and you sell volatility rather than buy it.

Take the insight. Leave the rules. That’s the whole trick to reading trading literature, and it took me embarrassingly long to learn it.

Housing too expensive?

Control the rent.

Healthcare too expensive?

Control the price.

Long-term interest rates too high?

Well, apparently we have a new one:

Buy the bonds.

Welcome to the rent control of the Treasury market.

On August 19, Scott Bessent’s Treasury announced it would at least double the size of its long-dated Treasury buybacks, from $2 billion to $4 billion per operation, targeting the 10- to 30-year part of the market.

The announcement came after the 30-year yield had touched its highest level in 19 years.

And for a few glorious minutes, it worked.

Bond prices jumped.

Yields fell.

Washington could congratulate itself.

Then the bond market sobered up.

By the next afternoon, yields had basically made a round trip.

Thanks for the $4 billion, Scott. Now where were we?

Bessent, Meet Mamdani

This reminds me of Zohran Mamdani’s approach to New York rents.

Rents are too high?

Freeze them.

Simple!

Except high rents aren’t the disease.

They’re the symptom.

If New York doesn’t build enough apartments, freezing rents doesn’t suddenly cause apartment buildings to sprout out of Central Park.

You haven’t solved the shortage.

You’ve just told the thermometer to stop showing the fever.

And now Treasury risks doing something remarkably similar with the bond market.

Long-term rates are rising?

Don’t ask why.

Buy bonds!

But the 30-year Treasury yield isn’t the problem.

The deficit is the problem.

You Can’t Buy Back Arithmetic

Let’s look at what the bond market sees.

Federal debt has crossed $40 trillion.

The deficit is running around 6% of GDP.

Interest expense has exploded.

Inflation remains above the Fed’s 2% target.

And Washington shows approximately the same enthusiasm for entitlement reform that I show for buying a 30-year Treasury at 4%.

Which is to say:

Not much.

And here’s the part that matters.

These aren’t recession deficits.

We aren’t fighting World War III.

Unemployment is low.

This is what we’re borrowing during relatively good economic times.

Imagine what the numbers look like during the next recession.

That’s what the long bond is beginning to price.

And Treasury apparently doesn’t like the answer.

The Bond Market Isn’t Misbehaving

This is an important distinction.

There is a legitimate reason for Treasury to intervene when a market stops functioning.

We saw that in March 2020.

Markets froze.

Liquidity disappeared.

Dealers couldn’t intermediate normally.

That’s when government intervention can make sense.

But a 30-year Treasury yielding 5% isn’t a broken market.

It’s a market clearing at 5%.

Those are very different things.

If buyers require 5% to lend Uncle Sam money for 30 years, perhaps the appropriate response isn’t to manipulate the yield downward.

Perhaps the appropriate response is:

Stop borrowing so damn much money.

I realize this is a radical concept in Washington.

Four Billion Is Nothing. The Precedent Is Everything.

Some people will look at these Treasury purchases and say:

“Barton, relax. Four billion dollars is peanuts.”

They’re right.

Four billion dollars in the Treasury market is a rounding error.

That’s precisely why the $4 billion doesn’t worry me.

What worries me is the next $4 billion.

If $4 billion doesn’t work, does it become $8 billion?

Then $16 billion?

Then $50 billion?

Does Treasury reach into the Treasury General Account?

At what point does “liquidity management” quietly become:

We have decided the 30-year yield is too high?

Because once the market believes Treasury has a target—even an unofficial one—the game changes.

Every rise in yields becomes a challenge.

The market says:

Show me.

And government says:

We’ll buy more.

Then the market says:

How much more?

This is how small interventions become large commitments.

The Credibility Trap

Scott Bessent understands markets better than most people in Washington.

But that makes this potentially even more dangerous.

Treasury’s greatest asset isn’t the balance in the Treasury General Account.

It isn’t its ability to conduct buybacks.

It isn’t even America’s taxing power.

It’s credibility.

The U.S. Treasury market is the foundation of global finance.

Treasuries are supposed to represent the world’s benchmark risk-free interest rate.

So what happens if investors begin thinking Treasury itself is uncomfortable allowing that interest rate to be determined by the market?

They may demand a larger risk premium.

That’s the delicious irony here.

Trying too hard to push long-term rates down could eventually push them up.

The moment investors believe the government is defending a price, they start wondering why the government is so desperate to defend it.

Markets are funny that way.

Rent Control Eventually Meets Supply and Demand

That’s why the Mamdani comparison is so useful.

Rent control can change the posted rent.

It cannot manufacture another apartment.

Treasury bond buying can change the yield temporarily.

It cannot manufacture fiscal discipline.

In fact, artificially lower rates can make the underlying problem worse.

Lower borrowing costs make deficits appear less painful.

Interest projections look better.

Politicians feel less pressure.

Everyone gets another few years to avoid making unpleasant decisions.

Congratulations.

We cured the hangover with another drink.

The deficit continues.

The debt compounds.

And eventually the bond market sends an even larger bill.

The Real Fiscal Policeman

Congress isn’t going to wake up one morning and announce:

“Good news, America! We’ve decided to make politically painful choices before we’re forced to.”

I’ve been around too long to wait for that.

The real fiscal disciplinarian is the bond market.

When long-term yields rise enough, things start happening.

Mortgage rates rise.

Corporate borrowing costs rise.

Federal interest expense rises.

Auctions become uncomfortable.

Politicians notice.

That’s the mechanism.

The 30-year bond is the adult in the room.

And Washington is now considering sending the adult to his room.

Which Brings Me to TLT

I’m primarily a day trader.

But I also love a good long-term trade when I think the market is telling me a story.

And I think this one could be setting up beautifully.

The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF—TLT—owns long-duration U.S. Treasury bonds.

Long rates fall, TLT generally rises.

Long rates rise, TLT generally falls.

And my long-term thesis is straightforward:

If deficits continue rising...

If federal debt continues compounding...

If interest expense keeps consuming more of the budget...

If inflation remains sticky...

And if Treasury responds to higher long-term yields by becoming an increasingly aggressive buyer of its own long-duration debt...

I don’t want to own the long bond.

I want to look for opportunities to short it.

TLT may be one of the cleanest ways to express that thesis.

But Don’t Confuse a Thesis With a Straight Line

This is important.

Being bearish on long-duration Treasurys doesn’t mean TLT goes down every week.

Far from it.

A recession could send TLT screaming higher.

A sharp drop in inflation could do it.

Aggressive Fed cuts could do it.

A geopolitical panic could create a flight into Treasurys.

And positioning can create violent short-covering rallies.

That’s why I wouldn’t treat this as:

SHORT TLT TOMORROW MORNING!

That’s not trading.

That’s a bumper sticker.

I’m talking about something different.

A long-term theme where rallies in long-duration bonds may increasingly become opportunities to establish bearish positions at better prices.

I want the market to give me the entry.

My Bet Is on Arithmetic

The comparison between rent control and Treasury yield suppression comes down to one simple idea.

You can control a price temporarily. You cannot control the economic forces producing that price forever.

Mamdani can tell a landlord what rent he may charge.

He cannot order another million apartments into existence.

Bessent can buy long-term Treasury bonds.

He cannot buy away a $40 trillion national debt.

He cannot buy away trillion-dollar interest expense.

And he certainly cannot buy away decades of political unwillingness to confront spending.

Eventually, supply and demand win.

Eventually, arithmetic wins.

And markets have an annoying habit of making politicians discover this at the worst possible moment.

So while Washington debates how many billions of dollars of bonds it should buy to keep yields under control, I’ll be watching TLT.

Because if Treasury keeps trying to rent-control the 30-year bond, I suspect the ultimate result won’t be permanently lower rates.

It will be a bond market demanding an even higher rent.

And that’s a market I’d rather be short than own.

The pin at 7665-7667 has held exactly, and it’s gotten stronger.

The single most important data point: gamma at the 7666 strike has grown from +$4.6K this morning to +$13.5K now — nearly tripling. That’s textbook 0DTE behavior. ATM gamma grows exponentially as expiration approaches, meaning the gravitational pull toward 7665 is roughly 3x stronger than it was at 11:57. Price has barely moved — it’s been sitting in a ~3-point range for over an hour, which is exactly what a gamma pin looks like in the afternoon.

Where we are: ~7665-7667, pinned by a massive 0DTE gamma wall

The GEX strike profile (image 4) shows the single largest positive gamma concentration of the day sitting right at 7665. Market makers are long gamma there, which means they mechanically buy dips toward it and sell pops away from it — a gravitational pin effect that gets stronger as expiration approaches. You’re sitting right on top of it.

Structure above current price: From 7670 up through ~7695, the structure flips to negative gamma, which means dealers amplify moves rather than dampen them. Any push higher gets choppy. The 7700 strike is a hard call wall (heavy OI visible in both the strike profile and the volume chart), and 7720/7750 have additional call resistance. The heat map confirms: the entire zone above 7700 has been deep red (net bearish flow) all day long.

Structure below: Secondary positive gamma support sits at 7650. Below that, the volume-by-strike chart shows the heavy put concentration lives in the 7580–7640 zone — that’s the real floor if things deteriorate. The ±1σ rolling range from the dashboard puts the lower bound at 7647.6.

The morning event: The cumulative net delta chart tells an important story — there was a massive 0DTE delta spike to ~$12B around the 10 AM open, then a sharp collapse as the market sold off from ~7684 to ~7652 and that positioning was unwound. The market recovered back to ~7666. That unwind is largely done, so the morning’s forced selling pressure is mostly exhausted.

Most retail traders watch a single screen. One chart. One line. And they wonder why they keep getting stopped out at exactly the wrong moment — just before the reversal they called plays out perfectly.

The problem isn’t their read on price. It’s that price is a lagging indicator of order flow. By the time the S&P 500 makes its move, institutional money has already committed. The big funds, the pension managers, the quant desks running systematic programs — they’ve been accumulating or distributing for the past 30 minutes while the price chart showed nothing but noise.

They leave fingerprints, though. Not on the price chart — but on the market’s internals.

Institutions can’t hide. When a $10 billion fund decides to buy equity exposure, every stock in their basket ticks up simultaneously. That signal shows up in the breadth data before it shows up in price.

The Invisible Scoreboard

Market breadth measures capture what’s happening across the entire market, not just to a single instrument. While the SPX price chart shows you the average, breadth shows you the distribution — how many stocks are actually participating, how much volume is backing the move, and whether institutional program trades are going out.

The Binkus 3T Regime system is built on three breadth indicators: TICK, TRIN, and TIKI. Each one measures a different dimension of institutional order flow. Together, they compute a composite “regime score” that tells you, in real time, whether the market’s internal structure favors bulls or bears. TICK: The Pulse of the MarketThe NYSE TICK measures, at any given moment, how many NYSE-listed stocks are ticking up versus how many are ticking down. A reading of +600 means that right now, 600 more stocks are on an uptick than a downtick. You can’t fake that across 3,000 individual securities simultaneously. That’s broad, coordinated institutional buying.

Individual TICK readings are noisy — they spike and collapse every few minutes. What matters is the pattern. On a genuinely bullish day, TICK readings persistently cluster above zero: most of the spikes are green, the dips find support quickly, and readings below −400 are rare. On a bearish day, the opposite is true — the ceiling at +400 gets hit and rejected while the floor breaks at −600.

The Binkus_TICK_Pressure indicator smooths these readings with an exponential moving average, adds a cumulative tracking line, and normalizes everything into a single pressure reading. It also marks the institutional thresholds — the levels where you know real money is moving.

Strong institutional selling — broad-based distribution underway TRIN: Where the Volume Goes If TICK counts the stocks, TRIN weighs the money behind them. The Arms Index divides the advance/decline ratio by the advancing/declining volume ratio:

TRIN = (Advancing Issues ÷ Declining Issues) ÷ (Advancing Volume ÷ Declining Volume)

A TRIN of 0.80 means advancing stocks are getting disproportionately more volume than their simple advance/decline count would predict. Institutions are piling into the winners. A TRIN of 1.40 means volume is flowing heavily into the declining stocks — even if the market looks calm, money is heading for the exits.

TRIN’s inverse relationship with price trips up most traders: lower TRIN is bullish, higher TRIN is bearish. The Binkus_TRIN_Direction indicator handles this inversion automatically, tracking the trend of TRIN rather than its absolute level, which eliminates much of the noise inherent in raw TRIN readings

.TIKI: The Program Trade Signal TIKI is the TICK’s smaller, faster sibling — it measures the same uptick/downtick spread but only for the Dow Jones 30. That narrow focus is exactly what makes it powerful.

The Dow 30 are the most heavily traded, most liquid large-caps in the market. When a major institution executes a program trade — an index fund rebalancing, an ETF creation/redemption basket, a systematic quant order — it touches the Dow 30 first and hardest. These orders go out all at once, across all 30 stocks simultaneously, and TIKI captures them the instant they execute.

TIKI ranges from −28 (every Dow stock downticking) to +28 (every one upticking). In practice, readings above +20 or below −20 are the program trade fingerprint. When you see a TIKI spike to +22 on your 5-minute chart, a major institutional basket just went in. That’s not noise — that’s a signal that precedes the corresponding price move by 30 to 60 seconds.

.CumTICK: The Macro Current

Individual TICK readings are snapshots. The Cumulative TICK — a running sum of every 5-minute TICK reading throughout the trading session — is the river. On the 60-minute SPX chart, this cumulative reading across multiple days becomes one of the most powerful trend indicators available: a breadth-based advance/decline line specific to institutional order flow.

When the 60-minute CumTICK is trending upward day over day, institutions are in sustained accumulation mode. The buying pressure is consistent, not episodic. That’s your macro bias:trade the long side until that trend breaks. When CumTICK turns down and stays down, step aside from longs regardless of what the price chart looks like.

The 3T Regime: One Number

Each of the three internals tells part of the story. TICK shows participation breadth. TRIN shows volume confirmation. TIKI shows program activity. The Binkus_3T_Regime synthesizes all three into a single composite score, updated every five minutes.

The math is a weighted combination: TICK pressure at 40%, TRIN direction at 35%, TIKI program activity at 25%. Each component is normalized to a common scale before combining. The result is smoothed with a short exponential average to remove noise from any single bar.

The output: a number that’s positive in a bullish regime and negative in a bearish one. Simple. Actionable

How to Trade the Regime

The system doesn’t generate entries. It generates context. You still use price structure — support and resistance, momentum, volume at key levels — for your actual entry trigger. What the 3T Regime gives you is the confidence to take that entry, or the discipline to skip it.

.The Edge: Why This Works

Retail trading is largely a game of chasing lagging signals on price charts that everyone else is watching. You see the same candles, the same moving averages, the same support levels as every other retail trader. The institutions — the entities moving real money — see those levels too, and they know exactly where the retail stops are clustered.

Market breadth operates in a different information space. When an institution is building a position, they can’t hide it in the TICK data. They can work their orders carefully through price — accumulating in a way that keeps price flat while they buy — but every one of those buys registers as an uptick. TRIN reflects the disproportionate volume. TIKI catches the program baskets.

The retail trader who watches only price sees “consolidation.” The trader who watches breadth sees TICK persistently above +200 and TRIN trending toward 0.75 — and knows the move higher is already decided.

Trading with the 3T regime doesn’t eliminate losing trades. No system does. What it eliminates is the specific kind of loss where you were right about direction but early, got stopped out, and then watched the market go exactly where you thought it would. The regime tells you when the institutional order flow has committed. Wait for that, and you’re trading with the current instead of against it. Every filled trade was profitable — no losers. But the numbers tell a more nuanced story than the headline.

What the data actually shows

You’re catching $0.20–$0.60 per contract on 0DTE options, holding a median of 47 seconds. The average ROI per trade is ~3% on the capital deployed, but your average gain is $35.83 per contract. At 1 lot per trade that’s the math — profitable, but thin margins where execution quality is everything.

The best trade of the day: P7695 at 3:31 PM — $60 in 22 seconds (4.1% ROI). The worst: C7665 at 2:06 PM — $20 in 15 minutes (1.9% ROI). That 15-minute hold is the tell — it was the only trade that didn’t go your way quickly. You made money on it but it tied up $1,080 for 15× your median hold time to earn $20. That’s a discipline question worth examining.

The rejected Sell to Open

The P7690 short at 10.90 getting rejected is the most interesting moment in the blotter. If that was a margin/approval issue, it cost you a potential credit strategy. If it was a limit miss, the market moved through you. Either way it broke what was otherwise a perfectly clean execution day.

The 3:50 PM UROut

The P7700 Buy to Open at 17.60 that didn’t route — 9 minutes to close, SPX at 7,674 means that 7700 put was ~$26 intrinsic. A 17.60 limit was well below market. That order was never going to fill. Possibly a fat-finger on the limit, or a test that was meant to be cancelled.

Honest grade: B+. The execution was sharp, the wins were clean, and you read the pin correctly. The 15-minute hold and the unrouted final order are the two things to look at next session
