If you’re reading this, I am grateful that you are here. I feel as though I’ve lived a few different lives since I last posted. I recently started doing some home recording and working with musician friends to record songs and bring them into completion and ultimately share them with you! I’m far along enough now that I’d like to clue you in on what’s happening, and for those who feel resonance, offer an invitation to support this work as artist patrons.

Late spring, I reached out to my friend, Kyran Daniel, an Australian artist/songwriter/producer currently living in London. I had a hunch about collaborating with him in some way, and serendipitously so, as he was just contemplating working with others during his recording/performing lull. We kept it brief in our discussions as we noticed the fuse.

Kyran and I had a chance meeting in 2024 as his booking agent reached out to me asking if I’d open for him at Bremen Cafe, an infamous dive bar in the Riverwest neighborhood of Milwaukee. I listened to his music and gasped as it was absolutely incredible. How could I say no? I knew it’d be very little pay, but since when do I make my musical decisions solely on money? There is no pattern to follow when it comes to saying yes or no. I felt a resonance that I couldn’t ignore. So yes!

I showed up early, found their sound system and set it up as is the standard for their shows and readied it for Kyran as best I could. He arrived on the wind from another world. We played to a crowd of about 15-20 people. It felt energetically punk rock to have him playing these utterly gorgeous pieces in a dive bar with sticker and sharpie marked walls.

Here’s a rad performance of him playin his piece “Pensieri,” that night. The song was also recently released on his NEW album, Like The Night Itself, available on Vinyl and streaming everywhere.

He ended up staying with me and my family for the better part of a week and even had me join him for another show in Madison at the Bur Oak. We had some real quality time out in the sun. He borrowed my bike for coffeehouse work trips, swam Lake Michigan with us and enjoyed daily meals with the whole family, all nine of us (including, Rocco, in Brit’s tummy). Quite honestly, it was like a brother was sent to me at a time when it really mattered.

Not long after our phone call in spring, I quit my job as a Chicago taxi driver (there’s much nuance as to why, of course, but as my family and I left the parking lot after dropping off the taxi I received a ding that I was sent $500 out of the big blue sky! I felt it like God’s lightning rod of support electrifying my departure), set up my recording gear in a small bedroom and recorded a handful of live takes with my two dynamic microphones capturing raw guitar and vocals.

I lit the fuse and recorded, “Still Spark,” a song born from a moment of effortless, energized drumming by my son, Remi, (3 at the time). His encouragement that day was the ‘spark’ that made the song happen. I was in the basement foolin’ and he ran down the stairs and played freely to what I was doing. His commitment to the moment was uncanny. I jumped in with him and the rest is history. It was wild! Here’s a clip of this moment:

After choosing a take later in the week, I sent ‘take 3,’ off to to Kyran in London and he started dreaming into the song with me. I really should add that he and I had a bit more history after his initial visit. He came back the next year to stay at our place while on tour with Derick LeDuke, LA/Nashville singer-songwriter. We happened to be moving and there wasn’t a lot of folks able to help us at the time so these two gents filled an absolutely essential role as we transitioned from our beloved home of over 7 years. It was an all-out insane weekend in every way, yet Kyran and Derick brought the gifts of joy and ease to our family that were clearly needed more than we knew. That home was a miraculous gift to our family and was bed to a river of life that I cannot begin to explain in this post. It’s where I got the idea for The Breezeway as it has a breezeway :). We moved there with our two older boys, Charlie (14, currently→) and Theo (12) and our baby twins, Annabel (9) and Simon (9). Our garden kept growing and Brit gave birth to 3 more while living there, Remi (6) born at a birth center, Ima (Eema) (3) born at home with midwives and Rocco (1) born at home with only myself and the children present. Each birth was wild and wonderful. We’ve since moved a few times, had a year long adventure in Chicago and are now back living in Wisconsin near family while we produce new music and see about what’s present in our lives.

It's a 5 song EP called Roaming Red, a bold collection of rock and roll love songs infused with raw, emotional performances. Four of the five songs feature the same amazing musicians also featured in Night Reminder:

Daniel Dauwe absolutely slays on the Electric guitar and was a massive help in gathering gear and making it sound the absolute best. He jumped out of his comfort zone to record with me and showed off what a rad, original talent that he is.

Tom Kraemer performed some wildly original bass lines and recorded 15 tracks with ease in one day. I always say, “he sings the bass!” Which he does, not only because he’s got a deeeeep voice, but because his whole heart is IN IT. He came in prepared like an old school locomotive, and took us all home!

Nick Lang was our rock solid drummer, super skillful at teasing out the best dynamics to support the song and cracking plenty of jokes to keep us laughing. His subtleties in surfing the waves of each song, adding ghost notes and punching the fills has me feeling oomph in my chest!

Zach Meyer is a heavyweight piano and organ player. His hands on the keys in these songs made absolutely stunning music! Truly a musical mastermind, think Garth Hudson of The Band and Jacob Collier, yes, I said it. He also just so happens to be the one who engineered, mixed and mastered this EP.

It’s a gift to be able to make music and share it with you. I’m very grateful! My inner child is excited to share the melding of these two works of art, my latest single “Roaming Red” and the 1954 short film The Red Balloon (Le Ballon Rouge), directed by Albert Lamorisse. The film was shot in the Ménilmontant neighborhood of post-war Paris, France. Despite having almost no dialogue, the film speaks volumes, and its beauty is simply captivating to me.

I've wanted to experiment with this footage for years, but it wasn't until recently that I had the idea to pair it with this song. As I worked on it, I found that the project evolved with each new pass - art like this is always living, and it's exciting to see where it takes you. I'm thrilled to share it with you. Please enjoy!

I’m grateful sharing this song with you today! It was a collaboration. Brit and I actually wrote it quite a long time ago. It came about quite effortlessly. I was caught up in guitar play and she began writing some phrases down. When I stopped to hear where she was writing, we realized we had both landed in the frequency of a song. We dropped in a bit deeper and the words just flew out from my heart or her pen and though we didn’t grasp entirely what was being said, when the song was satisfied, we sighed, and let it be.

If you were a little bug sitting on a chair in the coal room of the The Coalroom studio in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, then this would be your view looking up at me playing. Here’s a short clip from the day of recording with Zach Meyer in the other room at the recording console:

I really hope you enjoy this song and that it might be like finding a take-home shore-stone at a gorgeous pebble beach :)

I wrote this tune while living above my grandparents in 2013. I distinctly remember one porch conversation with my late grandpa about love that energized the completion of this song. He was very practical. A chop wood and carry water guy, but if you stuck around long enough, he was quite the midwest mystic. This song was written in the womb of that experience.

Around the same time, my sister asked me to play a song during her wedding and I happened to have this working title and morsel of an idea, so I finished it the best I could and performed it with all my heart. If I remember rightly, it went off really well. Stephanie, I’m grateful that you asked me to play and that you trusted me with your moment.

When I began writing this song, I thought I was marking time with love on the walls of my heart, but what I realized is that it marked a turning point in Love’s total destruction of the walls in my heart. The Sufi Mystic, Rumi says it like this, “Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.”

The song was recorded in Milwaukee at the Coalroom during the Night Reminder sessions, July 2019.

I co-produced the song with Zach Meyer and performed alongside this cast of longtime friends and stellar musicians:

I wonder what will come of this sweeping. There’s a song in there. It’s like a large rock was delivered to me with some semblance of shapes protruding. Now it’s time to chisel and see what else can be made of it. It’s not only finding form but it’s setting it free.

This is often how it happens for me. I vibe for hours on a song and keep on going until I feel a release. Some of it lands, sometimes a bit too hard, and some of it keeps on flying in the aether. heh.

Recently, my brother-in-love, Christian, returned an old CD that had a live set I did at Linneman’s in Milwaukee a few years back. I opened with this little poem I wrote and thought to share the performance here.

On the way to Christian’s home in North Carolina I happened upon a radio station playing Rebecca Dale: Night Seasons. The album is breathtakingly beautiful. It was truly a wonder listening while driving through the Tennessee mountains. It went on for at least 30 minutes and the whole time I felt like I was in synchronous movement with the music while we went up and down and all around.

I woke up today at 4:22 and couldn’t get back to sleep. After a struggle into rest meditation I felt like I was finally unwinding and was prompted to pick up a random book. I stood right where I was like a pillar, feeling strangely comfortable, and read a chapter and a half, then finally went outside to the sun to read on. The book opened to a chapter speaking on silence and the richness therein. Here’s a little taste:

We did one take and called it good. Family fun!

On our summer family road trip, while stopping to camp in the middle of Indiana, we were met by a golden eagle swooping right in front of us. With a wing span wider than our van, we slammed the brakes and marveled as it flew straight down the country road.

Maybe you need nothing because you know you’ve got everything you need at the time that you need it, and like this runoff sentence, you keep on groovin’ in divine flow all day until the last spark, then you sleep when it’s dark, and your inner eye opens and healing light shines, going to work with what you gave it, what you looked upon, what you felt with your being, shifting every atom in the universe to make it seen.

My deepest apologies for my absence!

WHERE IN THE WORLD HAVE I BEEN?

Well, in short, I’ve been hibernating! I still feel a bit naked, literally and figuratively, as spring’s winds blew so cold today, but as I open up I feel a brand new energy to pierce the veil of 2024 with fiery light! What does that mean? How should I know? I just let myself write it. Go let yourself do something too.

I did recently play a few shows. One of which was in Bandera, Texas at Sovereighty Ranch in the direct path of the solar eclipse. It was wild! I played a couple sets on different days and I was actually asked on a whim (the event was very co-creative) to play my song, “I Am, You Are,” directly after the four minute total eclipse. It was a joyful, grounding experience and many folks, including me, had an emotional release as I encouraged people to sing out their own song from their hearts.

“Still Spark” is a song birthed from a similar moment I had with my son, Remi, who is 4. I was strumming my guitar and he just plowed into the room started rocking this beat and squeezed this song out of me. Remi is a profound encouragement to me by just being exactly who he is. No need to think. No need to muster up nothing. Just be. Boom Boom Tap!

One note: the lyric later in the song is “scribe that ink on the page,” not “strike".” :) I flubbed it and that’s alright. Probably just so I could write it here now for someone who needs to hear, “SCRIBE THAT INK ON THE PAGE!”

I hope you’ve had a wonderful holiday season and are moving gracefully into this new year. I was recently sent a video of me and my two oldest sons, Charlie & Theo, singing a song at an open mic. Up until late December, I didn't know this video existed as it was from someone I didn’t know at the time it was recorded. They saved it all these years and finally shared it with me around Christmas.

I immediately thought of sharing it with you here on Substack. On the day of the performance I remember telling Brit, “I’ll take the big boys to perform with me.” Now, looking back I realize they were so little! Goodness! At that moment, I immediately dropped into my heart and felt the sober, co-creative power of each moment we have with our loved ones.

Here’s to a revelatory 2024! May the eyes of our hearts open wide to the love that's knocking on every door of every moment.

B.J. first met Tom while studying music at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), around 2009. He thinks it might’ve been in choir; B.J. was a baritone and Tom a bass, or maybe it was outside of a music hall with a group of guys, he says:) Tom was in an experimental rock band called SUN ROCK MAN with four other folks, including drummer Nick Lang. In the midst of this, Tom asked B.J. to open for the SUN ROCK MAN CD release show at UWM in 2011, which is how I met Tom. He said, “You’ve gotta have a band,” so they teamed with classmates, Nick Lang on drums and Matt Riebe on guitar.

Tom, a six-foot-four curly-haired dude with glasses, a super musical wiz, seemed somewhat of an absent minded professor. His car was a mess, his love life in a twist, but when he played music, he slammed two feet on solid ground. It was as if he knew the music was taking him somewhere, and he had to follow it. He rocked his whole body as he played. With each note, he jolted with electricity into jagged grooves, all sparked from his absolute joy of musical communion; I saw it, probably more than I’ve noticed in any other player.

Life threw many curveballs our way after that show, and B.J. decided to not form a band in the predicament of whether or not he was doing the ‘right thing’ at the time. Tom eventually moved back to his home state of Minnesota and became love struck by his now wife, Elisia. However, Tom and B.J. formed a good friendship. Tom’s late night phone calls and texts, “Got any new songs?,” continued year in and out as he developed a project management role in a Minnesota/South Dakota natural stone business. Life continued and the songs got deeper and wider. Our over-sized cobalt blue leather couch was his sleepover spot for practice visits and house shows in our Milwaukee flat with our first two little boys, Charlie and Theo.

A year or so after we had twins in 2016, Tom called to discuss a wild decision at hand, adopting another newborn baby, set to be delivered along with their own newborn, a day or so apart. They already adopted their first daughter, Arianna, an older sibling of the newborn. Soon after, he and Elisia dove in together and said yes signing up for “twins!”

After some time, Tom came back to the couch and brought his beautiful bass lines to record for B.J.’s debut album, Night Reminder, in July 2019. As he ate our banana bread and veggie sandwiches, he lit up like a little boy flying a kite. He meticulously recorded on 16 songs in one work day. How could we expect anything less? They were all in shock at the studio. B.J. says, “He sang the bass like an opera all the way through.” After Tom finished recording on “The Garden,” Zach Meyer (engineer, producer) exclaimed, “If I were given a thousand years and a thousand bass lessons, I’d never come up with that line. It’s just so unique. I love it!” (night reminder | behind the tracks).

As B.J. and I were listening to the mixes in our studio loft, covid mania had hit us all very hard. Right after Night Reminder was finished, everything was shut down, the record’s release show, some sweet musical opportunities crushed and done like nothing happened. Still, the music was released in faith and the journey continues on. Tom is Tom, and no matter what, he’s our brother from another mother.

It starts with the starter, you may be familiar, a simple fermentation that satisfies the body and uplifts the loaf. The only thing holding anyone back is preconceived ideas. I’ve heard a fair amount. Mine was, “I’m not a baker.” I heard this from my mother and the feminist cry, “oh why, why am I in the kitchen again and not getting paid,” but I soon found myself surrounded by multiple growing appetites and feeling less attracted to packaged food. My love for those little ones and B.J. was breaking through the mold. I also had the idea that baking with wheat had little nutritional value, especially since we had avoided industrialized wheat and “baked” gluten free many a time. Sourdough bread was a distant childhood memory, but once we actually tried eating it again, the family and I had experienced a good feeling. We began to wonder…

Whatever reason anyone would venture into the realm of sourdough bread, the challenges are set more in the mind than the actual task. Overall, it is not hard. It is an artful project of patience and planning. It’s taken time for me to learn how to juggle, and before this time, sourdough was a ball I just didn’t pick up. And ah gee, many things of the times have seemed to turn a generation into the “do-it-yourself crew,” adding more balls up into the sky. Don’t feel bad, Mom and Dad, honestly, the American dream machine had sold the idea that money could buy anything and that life improved once paid for; this is an over-statement but relatively reflective. Quickly, the 80’s and 90’s baby booming economies moved us away from commonly baking daily bread as the 70’s trended the hippy gardens and post world war scientist released GMO foods. I think baking sourdough may be cool again :)

B.J. had mentioned quite a few things on the subject of sourdough, which were obviously coming out of his subconscious boyhood love for baked goods. One morning, we were talking about our perplexed impressions of yeast, and at some point he said, a touché, “It’s just flour and water.”

STARTER CAMP

To Make “Starter,” Homemade Yeast, the Mother of all Sourdough Bread:

• 1 week

• 1 mason jar

• 2:1 wheat flour & water, mix every 12 hours

Just like a song, a little at a time, turns into something big or big enough. If you haven’t and would like to, establish a starter. The possibilities are endless once you start!

Here’s what I did: I set a large mason jar on the counter, added 1/2 c of flour (all purpose worked) with a 1/4 c of water, mixed them with a butter knife, then, covered it with a cap for twelve hours (I’ve added a tad more water if hard to completely blend). Repeated this at half that dose (1/4 c flour, 1/8 c water), I continued every twelve hours apart, so I did 7 AM (beginning in the kitchen) and 7 PM (ending); it’s actually an easy rhythm when you are naturally in the area :) for one week….then afterwards, once every twenty-four hours.

The starter will puff up and bubble, developing a sour wine kind of smell; it’s pretty fun! The longer you keep it going, the better it becomes, but it’s good and ready after the first week. Oh yeah, discard 1/2 of the starter when it fills most of the jar during it’s developmental week. You can use the starter discard in anything, like happy pancakes :) Store the jar in the fridge, if you go more than a day without feeding it after it is established. You can try different flours. This is part 1 of 3.

“Roberta” was born from a dream. It was 2011. Brit and I were newlyweds just returning home from a Hurricane Katrina service trip in New Orleans. Near the end of our trip, Brit suffered an early miscarriage. I stayed up with her in the middle of the night on a ground mattress of an old classroom. It was profoundly awkward and painful for Brit, but she made it all the way back to Milwaukee in the back of a bumpy 15 passenger van, still cracking jokes to make fun of the situation.

Shortly after getting home, I had a vivid dream. I saw a small kitchen table set for 3. Brit and I were with a little blonde girl. Her name was Roberta. Later, Brit was holding her on her hip, while she played with the wind. After I woke up, I wrote it all down then looked up the meaning of Roberta; based off of Robert, which means bright with glory, fame.

The song came fast, and I was also able to use it for a school project as I was still finishing up my BFA. I got an A. It’s always been a little bit of a sensitive spot for Brit. I don’t often play the song, but I think it’s a good time to share it again. I’d love to properly record and produce it as I think it’s a grand song.
