Shining wildly its hard to miss & captivating too. In zodiac mythology this ✨️ angel is apart of sagitarius’s bow/arrow pointing directly at scorpio. George Washington Carver never knew his parents by nothing more than name & story. As a baby, he was bought by the Carvers, and later raised free.
In boyhood he was a small kurious thing. Raised on ample land in Missouri, he explored the woods and its flowers/stones/birds, often asking “God, why did you make this plant, and for what purpose did you make it?”. This direkt kontakt is how he kame to know the Lands he inhabited and is what inspired his passions for agrikulture, painting, and chemistry.
Around 8 years old, with no money, he ventured to the nearest town with a school, and began working to pay for classes. Odd jobs helped him pay his way to a highschool kompletion certificate & be accepted into a kollege in Iowa. Though upon arrival he was denied admission due to his race.
Stranded but kontinuing on as one does, George Washington Carver kept working, painting, and learning the Land he was then on. This led to him being able to enroll at Iowa State College in 1890. After teaching agrikulture there for a few years, he met Booker T. Washington during a speaking tour. Booker offered an invitation to be head of the Agrikultural Department as the up and koming Tuskegee Institute! Carver whole heartedly accepted this position & prepared himself to move to new Lands.

Booker T. Washington’s life is its whole own story (for which he wrote an autobiography: Up From Slavery), but know he was born enslaved aswell &, after freedom, worked his way through school. He attended Hampton Institute & in 1881 founded Tuskegee Institute with very little funding. Just Land bought from a $500 loan, a handful of students, and determination to get it out the mud.

The following passage is from The Life of George Washington Carver

“When Professor Carver entered upon his work at Tuskegee the agrikultural department was in its infancy. Funds had not been available to run it on a large basis. The old agricultural building was not adequate to accommodate various purposes for which it was used. It was just about as crude in architectural construction as one should have expected, during the early years of the school, when it was facing one struggle after another for the lack of funds.
This state of affairs, however, offered no difficulties for Carver to entertain, in fact, he considered disadvantages as stepping stones to accomplish his task. He simply got on the job and made himself busy.
One of the first things he set out doing was that of getting the laboratory in workable condition. Indeed, this was not a small job, because nearly all the necessary equipment was lacking. Here an opportunity came for him to practice a lesson which he learned when a boy, that is, the lesson of carving something out of nothing. Moreover, the lesson of translating opportunity into achievement, and how to triumph over complex problems.
As the apparatus in the laboratory were not sufficient, he sent his students out to the alleys to gather old bottles, broken china, and bits of rubber and wire, out of which he made apparatus. Soon afterwards, however, his temporary fixtures were displaced, gradually, with new equipment.
Dr. Carver began to roam over the fields and the woods, in the community, with the purpose of making a study of different kinds of soils, and various plants etc. He usually took along his botany case to gather specimens which he carried back to make a study of in the laboratory.
The people in the community didn’t know what to make of him when he was going through the fields and over the hills with his case, stopping here and there and gathering plants. All of this was strange to them. They thought, however, that he was a “root doctor.” Several people came to him for treatment and for medicine.”

Early on, the Agrikultural Department took stewardship over 19 akres for an Experiment Station. Here they tested kultivation techniques for different types of soils present in Alabama, and gave scientifik evidence for the methods George Washington Carver taught & developed.
During this time Carver performed regular outreach to the farmers who kould not attend Tuskeggee Institute, but stood to benefit most from the teachings. This outreach ikluded katching rides karing what he kould & sharing techniques with farmers while kollekting samples from fields and forest. After 12 years of this, Booker requested he design a wagon that kould karry tools, perform demonstrations, and meet farmers in their komunities/on their Lands… and so it was birthed.

This passage is from Booker T Washington, Builder of Civilization

…“His plan was later carried out through the Jesup Wagon contributed by the late Morris K. Jesup of New York. This wagon was a peripatetic farmers’ school. It took a concentrated essence of Tuskegees’ agricultural department to the farmers who could not or would not come to Tuskegee.

The wagon was drawn by a well-bred and well-fed mule. A good breed of cow was tied behind. Several chickens of good breeds, well-developed ears of corn, stalks of cotton, bundles of oats and seeds, and garden products, which ought at the time to be growing in the locality, together with a proper plow, for deep plowing, were loaded upon the wagon. The driver would pull up before a farmhouse, deliver his message, and point out the strong points of his wagonload and would finally request a strip of ground for cultivation. This request granted he would harness the mule to the plow, break the ground deep, make his rows, plant his seeds, and move on to the next locality. With a carefully planned follow-up system he would return to each such plot for cultivation and harvest, and, most important of all, to demonstrate the truths he had sought to impress upon the people by word of mouth.”

The Jessup Wagon was SUPER versatile & people around were big fans of it. The lessons and tools carried improved with time and changed with the seasons. They spread pamphlets on everything for komposting & peanuts to klay dyes & kooperative marketing. Many organic garden products (made at the Tuskegee Institute) were on show too, boosting the lokal economy.

What’s really juicy to me, especially as it pertains to the work of the Black Land Bus, is this idea of kultivating strips of Land for demonstration purposes. Small fractions of Land where they would sow the best seeds & return regularly. These return visits turned into 2-3 day long classes with over 100 lokals, learning & sharing with one another. The classes were seasonal & made waves in the komunities of share kroppers and Land “owners”.

This is how I want the Black Land Bus to funktion. Growing slow and intentionally with komunities in our region. Partnering with black and indigenous farmers to build and leaving the komunities with more than just knowledge. We’ve been doing the work of spreading seeds, planting fruit trees, kreating gardens, and building up the BLBus over the past year, but I’m yearning for the day we put our hands in the soil to build up from the klay. Making burried greenhouses for farmers, and klay ovens, and eko village housing… yoooo imagine a playground made with the earth, just a space for komunity joy and the Land to be deeply integrated.
This old yet new architekture using Georgia Red Klay or Mississippi’s Lukfi Huta (pale grey klay in Chatah) fills my dreams & sketchbooks.

I see the story of George Washington Carver’s life & know following & sharing your passions will not go without reward. I read Booker T. Washington’s autobiography & know that building the institutions we need takes time & wide kollaboration to move us forward. This does not skare me, this only serves as inspiration for our komunities.

Back to the history lesson, The Jessup Waggon reached over 2,000 people in south Alabama over its first growing season. It grew to have 4 teachers onboard, inkluding manager Thomas Monroe Campbell & nurse Uva Mae & Alabama born George Bridgeforth.

Soon the wagon got upgraded to a ford truck, & again to a larger vehicle with ability to vaccinate farm animals, projekt lessons, test milk, deploy playground equipment, and reach many many more farmers.

“The Booker T. Washington School on Wheels” is composed of a group of teachers (four or five) and a very large truck which is well equipped with apparatus which the teachers use in demonstrating scientific farming; methods of improving the home, and most of all the teacher of domestic science and a trained nurse play a very important part on the program of this work.

This group of teachers travel throughout the rural districts of South and Southwest Alabama; going from one community to another with the purpose of assisting the Farmer. As a result of this work, farm life in these districts has become happier and more cheerful. It appears that the isolation which formerly existed has been greatly broken.

Dr. Carver has taken a very active part in this great movement of “The Booker T. Washington School On Wheels,” which is under the direction of the Tuskegee Institute. Various products which he has extracted from the peanut and the sweet potato, and also from other native products, have been exhibited on the tours through these districts. Hence, the farmers in that section of the State have been fortunate in getting first hand information as to the possibilities of the common products. There is no telling just how far reaching this movement may become.”

This work went on for 47 years and got over many bumps with wide ranging support, inkluding $5,000 being krowdfunded in 1923 for the vehicle seen below. It inspired the kreation of the Agricultural Extension Offices, which today is where many people go today to test their soils & find resources. The program was successful until the very end & only klosed bekause the extension offices grew to be desegregated, and reach every kounty in Alabama.

Irene Morgan has been visiting her mother in Virginia to rekover spiritually from a miscarrage.

On July 16th, 1944 she boarded a bus back home to Baltimore & when told to give up her seat for a white kouple, refused. Irene not only refused, she then tore up the sherrif’s arrest warrant & threw it out the bus window .t
When grabbed, she (allegedly) kicked the first sherrif in the groin & told the 2nd “We’ll whip eachother.” as he pulled out his nightstick. He ran off to deet a deputy & they arrested her for violating Jim Crow.

Seeing as Irene Morgan was traveling to Maryland (which did not have Jim Crow laws) she refused to pay the fine after being released. She partnered with the NAACP to take her kase to the Supreme KKKourt, where it was ruled that Virginia’s enforcement of Jim Crow on interstate travel was unkonstitutional.

Despite the ruling of Irene Morgan v. The Commonwealth of Virginia, there was no enforcement anywhere in the Jim Crow South.

After WWII ended, black soilders returned home expecting better treatment, having fought for Amerikkka. The disapointment & frustration they experienced was felt throughout the black komunity, and led to increased militancy in the fight for black liberation.
At this time advancements were slow, steady, precise, and limited in scope. Irene Morgan v. The Commonwealth of Virginia was purposely argued in kourt, focusing on interstate travvel as to chip away at Jim Crow’s legal foundation of “seperate but equal”.

In the organizing of the Journey of Reconciliation, the Upper South was targeted the kontinue this chipping away, and for the safety of participants. Still, participants were arrested & met with mob violence. In North Carolina, Bayard Rustin was arrested for violating Jim Crow Laws & sentenced to 22 days on the chain gang.

“April 1947

Congress of Racial Equality organizes Journey of Reconciliation

There had been freedom rides before the Freedom Rides of 1961. In July of 1946, Black World War II veteran, Wilson A. Head, decided to test the Supreme Court’s recent Morgan v. Virginia decision banning segregated seating in interstate travel. He boarded a Greyhound bus in Atlanta and began a trip to Washington, D.C. Along the way, Head met taunts and harassment. Police officers even pointed guns at his head in a police station in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Nonetheless, he arrived in the nation’s capital physically unharmed.

Four years earlier, Bayard Rustin had made a similar journey when he boarded a bus in Louisville, Kentucky to travel to Nashville. He sat in the second row, and when the driver ordered him to move to the back of the bus, Rustin refused. He managed to get to Nashville still seated in the front, but there, after beating him, city police carried him to the police station. He continued to insist on his right to sit where he pleased. And he refused to be intimidated. Finally one policeman said to another officer, “I believe the nigger’s crazy!” and he was sent on his way.

In 1947, Rustin was serving as treasurer of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), as well as the co-secretary of race relations for the Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR), a pacifist human rights organization. Together, following Wilson Head’s ride, FOR and CORE decided to organize a larger, more confrontational test. Although court rulings were chipping away at Jim Crow, they felt that the right to desegregated travel needed on-the-ground assertion. The two groups organized the Journey of Reconciliation in an attempt to make the Morgan decision a reality.

The Journey was meticulously planned. Rustin and George Houser, a leader in both CORE and FOR, traveled the proposed Journey’s entire route, “adhering to Jim Crow restrictions,” in order to canvass the itinerary. They lined up lawyers, raised funds, contacted local leaders, and organized meetings. Thurgood Marshall of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund questioned the effectiveness of this direct action strategy, charging that it would lead to a “wholesale slaughter with no good achieved.” The Journey of Reconciliation deliberately included white participants so that “the inevitable violence [could] be reduced to a minimum.”

On April 9, 1947, the Journey of Reconciliation commenced on buses leaving Washington, D.C. An interracial group of eight white and eight black men, planned to visit fifteen cities in Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky. The group planned to speak about the Morgan case, “develop techniques for dealing creatively with possible conflict situations” and document any incidents that occurred because of their challenge to segregation laws.

As was the case with Marshall, some Blacks were dubious about the Journey. But when some Black middle-class leaders in Durham, North Carolina attempted to prevent a NAACP-organized mass meeting to support the riders, the majority of the Black community came together to demonstrate support for the Journey. “The meeting went on as scheduled, [and] the church packed with a mass of supporters.”

The group made twenty-six tests of segregated seating arrangements during their two-week Journey, and they were arrested on six of those attempts. In Chapel Hill, North Carolina, four of the riders were arrested, and a car of angry white men with sticks and rocks followed their car after they were released on bail. The Journey of Reconciliation created publicity, especially for the tactic of nonviolent direct action. Fifteen years later, in the wake of the students sit-ins, CORE would sponsor another round of Freedom Rides that garnered far more attention and created an impact that resonated throughout the South and across the country.”

As for the Black Land Bus, the biggest take aways from The Journey of Reconciliation comes from a Bayard Rustin interview. In the interview, Bayard Rustin also states that “the first lesson is, don’t try to repeat what you’ve done because you are in a different period.” He explains that we protested bekause we kouldn’t vote, & now (in 1979) we are voting to achieve ekonimik and social equality.
Taking this a step forward, today the strategy is to build independent systems towards Black Liberation. Tho we don’t plan on being arrested and taking down Jim Crow (thank the ancestors that’s already done!) and all of the time, effort, and money put into any movement toward Black Liberation is how we make black history.

Bayard Rustin sais very plainly that “ordinary people make the movement, not the leaders". He spoke about the bus loads of people that kame to the March on Washington being what made the march successful.
This for me links to the komunities we aim to build with. In that same way, its the people who kome to the farms and build with the tools in the Black Land Bus that make the impakt. The BLBus by itself will not build a greenhousee for a farmer. The BLBus by itself will not spread seeds, but the many hands that show up to learn and grow is what makes the impakt. It is the komunities, each, that heal our Yakni (Land in Chatah) and grows the food we need to be well.

What is the Black Land Bus?

For those yet to have participated in this dream, The Black Land Bus is a tool to build infrastrukture on our lands & skills in our komunities. For the past year we’ve been building a mobile workshop space that will have the tools necessary to build for black and indigenous farmers akross the deep south. The BLBus will fokus on natural building techniques to kreate buried greenhouses, klay ovens, kompost systems, earthen rainwater harvesting systems, and whatever farmers/komunitites need to thrive. This land projekt on wheels sprouted from South Atlanta’s vision for a komunity kitchen as opposed to Cop City.

For the past year we have been designing & dekonstrukting the inside of the BLBus to prepare for the building of the flexible workshop space, medicinal herb garden, native seed pantry, chicken koop, self sustainable living space, and artistik inspiration that will one day build the komunity kitchen. … let me say, Atlanta has been workin! On substack @BlackLandBus we’ve documented some of our trips & progress, but konsider this the konstruktion katchup post (trip rekap will be another post).

On this blessed day, a year ago we gathered to get the big bulky seats out the back of the Black Land Bus… wheeeewwww that was not easy! We had to have someone under the BLBus holdin a bolt, yelling “GO” to someone inside the BLBus unskrewin it, tryin not to krush the other’s fingers, all while I insisted on blasting musik & good vibes. It took like 3 days & 14+ hours but we got it done .t

Skippin over some small trips, some big trips, saving plants from frost, removing invasives, and the Thanksgiving to Valentine’s Day stretch when the BLBus was with mechaniks (see last substack post for details), the design became fuller & more flavorful.

By the time spring kame back around & a few of us returned from Texas, we jumped back into BLBus Build Days. Learning to use more power tools as we dismantled the roof & his insulation , wires were unkovered and road blocks were hit. It took us like 3 months to figure out “just kause people on youtube are doin all these extra steps, dont mean we need to”. And with that, we stopped disturbing the wheelchair lift & accessories (we’re keeping all that!). Still we did remove everything down to the subfloor & rusty nails.

In this time, sunflowers grew tall & beans sprouted everywhere they were spread. Trips & side projekts saw the kreation of new gardens akross Atlanta. The Black Land Bus set up the Building Kujichagulia Art Exhibit at festivals akross the city before taking a big road trip to Detroit.

When we got back to Atlanta (I promise there’s a trips rekap koming soon, but Detroit is already posted on substack!), we hosted a BLBus Build Day in front of the West End Mall. With this publik facing get-together, the Black Land Bus reached new people. On this day we painted the exterior, started waterproofing the back interior, and gave the BLBus his first piece of furniture!. A lil handy folding table and drawer set now lives in the BLBus where the medicinal herb garden will one day go.

We got to more waterproofing, sent out more postcards, and harvested beans before mechanik issues put a hiatus on the show (details in last post), but follow @BlackLandBus on substack to support (paid or unpaid both appreciated) & know when he exits the mechanik shop. When we do resume, we will be sekonds away from starting to build up the self sustainable living space, garage, french cleats, kitchen, and komposting toilet.

I’m personally excited for the future & grateful for all the love, support, and time people have poured into the Black Land Bus. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

Last year the Back Land Bus was in the mechanik shop from Thanksgiving to Valentines day getting fuel injektors replaced (which was expensive!). That came out of nowhere, since I had had the bus for only like 2 months and the mechanik log I read before aquring the BLBus didn’t mention any type of issues of the sort. I first noticed an issue once when the BLBus wasn’t accelerating on the highway when I was pressing the gas, but this quickly self korrekted. When a kold snap can that made a kascade of issues for the BLBus I explained what I experienced to the mechaniks (had to go through multiple shops to find trusted ones). But nobody had a explanation of the root kause.

But, still when the BLBus kame out the shop the issues seemed fixed, and we had no issues goin to the border of Mexico & back (a post on the last year of travels is koming soon). I learned to do oil changes, and refill koolant, and replace batteries,… and a handful of more small fixes well enough that when mechaniks did a diagnostik before the Detroit Trip, we were able to fix those issues at a BLBus Build Day easily. By the time I got back to Atlanta safely (thank god) through DC & Charotte, I noticed the BLBus was guzzling gas & had too much exhaust coming out the back (still driving well tho).

I took him back to the mechanik and paid for some more fixxes (oil pan replacement, power steering fluid flush…) but didn’t see aktual improvement on the kore issues I was noticing & naming. They didn’t find solutions in the diagnostiks I was paying for and instead kept giving quotes for small fixes that wasn’t the main issue. This led to issues getting worse, me learning more DIY fixxes (transmission oil filter replacement, fixing air leaks…), and eventually having to kancel BLBus Build Days…

Alright so boom, there I am packed and ready to go to Mississippi. The bus got a klean bill of health the week before & I’m excited to see my family land. I get the bus up & running, and its akting HELLA FUNNY. I mean like not goin over 30 miles and failing to get through the hills and valleys of Georgia. I kall the mechanik and am like “what the freak is goin on”, they say to bring him by. So literally on the way to the mechanic the BLBus shuts down at a red light, randomly. It’s never done this before & I’m supposed to be on the road to the family kamping trip of a lifetime in a few hours.

I restart the Black Land Bus and get over to the mechanik to immediately start pressin necks. kause AIN’T NO WAY this is the result after I gave y’all $2k & yall gave me a thumbs up. They get their most experienced mechanik on the beat, and I’m right there w mans in the engine, behind the driver’s seat, lookin at his komputer, pointin out the issues I been noticing that no one seems to know the kause of. I even get him to drive on the interstate w me to see what I’ve been seein & on his komputer we able to see a big red flag sayin “injektor pressure pump”.

Now he’s tellin me bout the o-rings & that the whole engine might need to be replaced and im just like “so I kant go to Mississippi? 😢”.

Back at the shop they don’t charge me for this diagnostik, but have given me some quotes for around $10k that don’t satisfy my needs. I don’t have 10k U$D, but am preparing to take the BLBus in to get a full diagnostik search into this issue and a plan to fix it fully in a way that matches my research.

I’m going to have to krowdfund for this. My saving and budget has been blown with mechanikal fixes this past year. I don’t enjoy having to do this (any of this), but will be using the time while the Black Land Bus is in the shop to restrategize & make a fuller plan for the koming year +.

So in the immiadate future expekt a krowdfund announcement! I’m waiting to get the full bill, so I know how much to ask for.
To leave y’all with some good news, the Black Land Bus has received a rapid response grant for komunity organizations in krisis from Black Solidarity Economy Fund. This is an honor and something to pay forward, as we get past rocky roads and to the mission of building food soveriegnty on these lands.

This week we worked on kleaning & waterproofing the base! In this area will soon be a tool garage & bed.

Outside the bus people tended the garden. Invasive bamboo was cut down & used to support plants for the upcoming storms.

During the Black Land Bus Build Day, some took time to porchsit & talk with the kreator of “Atlas of Abolitionist Urbanisms" (you'll hear about this when its released!). Others spent time starting the firepit we'll sit around when it gets kold.

THE WATERMELON FESTIVAL! 🍉🍉🍉

At Sankofa, black farmers came with their sweetest krop & shared orange, yellow, and ofc red watermelons. Kids ran around as peformers sang joy into the space and griots told stories of playful bunnies 🐇🌿 (insta @BabaCgms).

The doors of the Black Land Bus opened to give tours and share the vission of supporting black farmers. Baba C woke up the konnektion between this bus project & the Journey of Reconciliation, Freedom Rides, Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, and more occurrences thru history.

After the mellons were eaten and bellies filled, black farmers showed excitement for the Black Land Bus & shared about the work being done along the Harriet Tubman Freedom Byway.

The black legacy residents of “Detroit" tell stories of a vibrant city, once abandoned & now blossoming again. As we arrived we saw chicory flowers EVERYWHERE! Alongside the strawberry clovers, it decorated empty lots and became the backdrop of this bueatiful city.

On this side of the river, family opened their arms wide & emerged us in Detroit's kulture. This city is slept on. Thru & thru good people, good food, great vibes.
