1: Springfield Haitian student takes his own life after being fitted with ICE ankle monitor

A recent highschool graduate, Pierre Damas Bell died by suicide after having a GPS monitor strapped to his leg. Bell was one of the hundreds of Haitians forced to wear a GPS monitor after their temporary protected status officially expired in late July.

Bel was a varsity soccer player for Springfield City School District, where he graduated in May. He was on the National Honor Society and a member of the Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps.

Bel posted outfit photos of his first day of classes at Wright State on Aug. 24.

In his Instagram bio, Bel wrote he was studying both physiology and neuroscience in preparation for medical school.

“I came to this country to pursue my education. I didn’t come here to commit a crime or hurt anyone,” he captioned the post. “Yet now I’m walking through the streets of the United States with a GPS monitor on my leg, carrying a feeling of shame and humiliation that I never imagined I would experience. I came here to study, to build my future and to live a better [life,] not to be treated like a criminal. So now, how am I supposed to play college sports with a GPS monitor on my leg?”

2: Police leave Black man unconscious in the street—minutes later he's run over by a car.

The police found a man who was stumbling and struggling in the street. He ends up laying unconscious in the street. The officer left the scene, leaving him in the middle of the street, minutes later, he is ran over.

The same officer was the first to respond to the hit and run, however, he did not provide medical care.

He later died at the hospital.

The police officer did not hold the scene—or even start investigation.

Deputy Commissioner said that the officer has been placed on administrative duty.

3: 9 officers fired weapons in shootout that killed Black 67-year-old security guard in Gary

Kenneth Williams Sr. was working security at Metro station in Gary, Indiana on Friday night. At around 10:54 p.m., Indiana State Police said Gary police and Lake County Sheriff’s Department officers responded to reports of a security officer exhibiting “unusual and erratic behavior”.

At 11:20 p.m., officers began exchanging gunfire with Williams, who was shot and killed at the scene.

“A lot of shots. It had to be like 100 or something shots rang out,” said witness Kristin Lindsey.

At least 100 evidence markers were seen around the area, like a garbage can hit with a dozen bullets.

“It feels like it’s overkill. You know, it feels like it’s too much,” Williams Jr. said.

A total of nine officers discharged their weapons. State police said six were with the Gary Police Department and three were with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

All involved officers were placed on administrative leave.

4: Police pull Black man out by his dreadlocks—through broken car window.

Tedrick Washington was in the back seat of a car that committed a speeding violation.

Through a broken car window, the police pulled Washington out of the back seat by his dreadlocks. Then punched him twice in his face.

“I’m going to Tase the shit out of you,” officer yells—after he’s already on ground.

He was later charged with “obstruction of governmental operations.”

Arkansas State Police have made no statement as to whether the officer’s use of force is under review.

5: A Black enslaved man was lynched on Utah’s Capitol Hill. State leaders resisted a memorial, so Salt Lake City acted.

“Notice to all N------! Take warning!! Leave white women alone!!!”

This was the sheet of paper found on the body of Thomas Coleman, after he was murdered and lynched at the Utah State Capitol in 1866.

Coleman arrived in Utah in 1848 still enslaved. Newspapers even identify Coleman as having been Baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or the Mormon Church.

According to newspaper accounts, Coleman’s head had been bashed with a rock, and his own knife was used to stab him in the chest and cut his throat.

“That brought me to — I have to admit, to my surprise — these several instances of lynchings that occurred involving Black men in the 1800s and 1900s, and Thomas Coleman was one of them,” Tabery, who has been working on the project as a board member of Sema Hadithi, said in an interview.

6: Police punch Black man in his face—arrest him just standing on public sidewalk.

Just recently in Brooklyn, New York, two officers started attacking a man on the corner.

“My poor neighbor was standing on the sidewalk when 2 cops jumped out and started attacking him.”

“Officer punched his face multiple times,” man filming said.

“Then told me to ‘Mind my business!’”

This is another example of how the system of policing is corrupted and needs to be abolished and redone. It doesn’t matter how good a person is, it doesn’t matter their skin tone, modern day policing is built off using violent to demand compliance, and that is what this is. No police officer, no matter how good, will ever change the fact that policing is racist and corrupted.

CRITICAL ANALYSIS

• Are these coincidences? Is it a coincidence that a police officer would leave a Black man on the road unconscious until he is ran over and dies? Is it a coincidence that 9 police officers shot at a Black security guard in Gary around 100 times? Nothing is coincidental. Everything means something.

• In 1866, there was a Black man lynched in Utah. In 2026, there are Black people being lynched across the country. How much has actually changed? The same people who tell us racism does not exist are putting on their robes and hats at night, but in 2026, they are white with pointy hats, they are red MAGA hats, blue police uniforms, or even suits and ties in the White House.

• Arm yourselves. Protect yourselves. Go serve in your community.

WHAT HAPPENED?

ABC news reports that a federal judge has approved the $72.5 million settlement between Jeffrey Epstein’s victims and Bank of America. It is the third financial institution to reach a settlement.

“The settlement class has been properly served,” Judge Jed Rakoff decided Thursday.

Women are suing collectively, accusing Bank of America of ignoring suspicious transactions by Epstein.

Bank of America agreed to settle the lawsuit in March, as they continue insisting it did not facilitate sex trafficking crimes.

They specifically were focused on suspicious payments to Epstein by Leon Black, who stepped down as chief executive of Apollo Global Management, after an independent review found he paid Epstein $!58 million for estate planning.

Among the transactions the plaintiffs alleged were suspicious were payments to Epstein by Leon Black, who stepped down as chief executive of Apollo Global Management after an independent review commissioned by the company found he paid Epstein $158 million for estate planning.

Black said that his relationship with Epstein involved “professional services” for for estate planning, tax and philanthropic advice, including paying Epstein millions of dollars annually for six years, between 2012 and 2017.

He has continued dying involvement stating any involvement in “Epstein’s reprehensible conduct is categorically untrue.”

We will get more into him below.

ABC news additionally reported the same Jane Doe plaintiffs have reached similar settlement with JPMorgan Chase and Deutsche Bank, while their claim against Bank of New York Mellon was dismissed.

The bank denies “each and all of the claims and contentions” in the lawsuit, according to court documents.

“While we stand by our prior statements made in the filings in this case, including that Bank of America did not facilitate sex trafficking crimes, this resolution allows us to put this matter behind us and provides further closure for the plaintiffs,” a Bank of America spokesperson told ABC News.

LEON BLACK

The first criminal charges against Epstein happened in 2006, when he was accused of molesting a girl in his mansion. Six years later, Leon Black, lacking any foundational ethics still sought out Epstein for professional advice, so much so, he was willing to pay a pedophile for years.

The New York Times investigated Black’s dealing with Epstein ““The Billionaire Who Stood by Jeffrey Epstein,”, noting it went much deeper than previously known. They reported at least $50 million in payment from Black to Epstein. Not only that, they report a 2012 visit by Black to Epstein’s private island for a cookout.

“The distinguished reputations of these individuals gave me misplaced comfort in retaining Epstein’s services in 2012 for my personal estate planning, tax structuring and philanthropic advice. Like many other people I respected, I decided to give Epstein a second chance. This was a terrible mistake. I wish I could go back in time and change that decision, but I cannot. Had I known any of the facts about Epstein’s sickening and repulsive conduct, which I learned in late 2018, more than the year after I stopped working with him, I never would have had anything to do with him.”

CRITICAL ANALYSIS

• We must look skeptically and critically at any claims by a billionaire financier. Leon Black spent $50 million for help by Epstein, AFTER he visited Epstein island for a private cookout in 2012. He now tells us that he had nothing to do with it, after a judge order a $72 million settlement by Bank of America for suspicious transactions. Why would I believe a billionaire that has been to his island six years after being charged as a pedophile? But let’s say, he didn’t know what was happening, which I deeply struggle to believe. He still was okay with associating with a known pedophile. He was more than okay paying him an insane amount of money. But why? Because what he would receive financially was more important than the countless lives that would be trafficked, ended, and harmed by Epstein. The byproduct of capitalism, putting the wants of profit over people.

• What is the financial institutions role in upholding the system that we exist in? In upholding global sex trafficking? In upholding Trump’s ability to earn billions while President? In upholding a political establishment hellbent on using foreign affairs as a means of enriching our country and our billionaires? The greatest evils could never have happened without it. During the Atlantic Slave Trade, Switzerland was one of the biggest banks and financiers of enslavers activities: outfitting the boats, loaning people to run the plantations, and even offering insurance for the enslaved. But no one knows that, because their “hands” never got dirty. Billionaires are being enriched off the people’s misery, off the misery of the working class. And when they are caught, they are telling us their material involvement in evil cannot be malicious only unintended.

• This is so demonstrable of our society and how apathetic we tend to be. This curse of individualism was learned from a capitalistic idea of our “right to self-determination”, often being conflated with individualism, as they both value autonomy. This looks like, if it isn’t happening to me, then it doesn’t matter. As long as I get mine, then I am good. We have most likely all used that phrase, yet what do you say when a billionaire who paid Epstein $50 million says the same thing? That sickness called individualism syphons our ability to care for eachother, stealing empathy like colonizers do land. This creates a certain separation that prevents us from violently fighting for our oppressor. Because if the response of violence is not justified when we talk about purging out anyone and everyone who willingly made money off of global sex trafficking, then when is it justified? The system tells you never, yet those who created the system did much worse in response to a “tyrannical government” because of taxes on tea and other goods. Individualism is killing us and preventing progress.

• They made billions of global sex trafficking. The President of the United States is a pedophile and was good friends with sex pest, Epstein. (_{allegedly, of course… can’t sue me.)}

On August 11, severe storms tore through Northwest Indiana, knocking out electricity across the region. In Gary, a majority-Black city, what should have been the aftermath of a storm became a nearly two-week humanitarian crisis. Residents lost refrigerators full of food. Schools and businesses closed. Seniors were trapped in buildings without functioning elevators. People who relied on electrical medical equipment were forced to figure out how to survive without it. More than 10 days after the storm, thousands were still waiting for their lights to come back on.

Being from New Orleans, the story of Gary hit differently.

I was not alive when Hurricane Katrina made landfall in 2005. But when you are from New Orleans, Katrina does not feel like history. You grow up with it. You see the waterlines. You hear the stories. You know which family members evacuated and which ones stayed. You understand that what happened to New Orleans was not simply the result of a hurricane.

And that is exactly what I see happening in Gary.

What stood out to me most is that in both cities, some of the greatest suffering happened after the storm itself had passed.

Katrina did not directly drown New Orleans. The catastrophic flooding came after failures in the city’s levee and floodwall system. In Gary, the August 11 storm eventually moved on, too. But thousands of residents remained in darkness for days afterward. At Park Shore Commons, residents went without power for 12 days. At another senior living complex, residents said their electricity was out from August 11 until August 23.

That distinction matters because storms are natural hazards. Abandonment is a policy choice.

A tornado cannot determine whose infrastructure has been neglected for decades. A derecho does not decide which families can afford a hotel, replace hundreds of dollars of spoiled groceries or purchase a generator. Climate change does not create racial inequality from scratch.

It exposes the inequality we already built.

Gary is roughly 80 percent Black, and around one-third of its residents live in poverty. The city has endured decades of deindustrialization, segregation, redlining and disinvestment. When a disaster arrives in a community already carrying those burdens, residents are not beginning recovery from the same starting line as wealthier communities.

Patrick Bigger, research director for the Climate and Community Institute, described Gary as another example of a pattern visible since Katrina: extreme weather disproportionately harms working-class communities and communities of color because existing inequality has been intensified by structural disinvestment.

That is the part of climate change conversations that I think we miss.

We talk about rising temperatures. We talk about stronger storms. We talk about carbon emissions and renewable energy. Those conversations matter. But climate change is also about who gets to recover.

Who has enough money to leave town when the electricity goes out?

Who can replace an entire refrigerator of groceries?

Who has a car to drive somewhere with electricity?

Who can buy a generator?

And who is expected to sit in the dark and wait?

One Gary resident, 73-year-old Joetta Walker, uses a nebulizer for asthma. Without electricity, she could not use it and had to depend on an inhaler instead. Other residents described losing groceries purchased with SNAP benefits because their refrigerators stopped working. At one church, Pastor Michael Watson said the organization fed thousands of families during the crisis.

Community taking care of community is beautiful. Black communities have always known how to do that.

But we have to stop confusing resilience with an acceptable substitute for government responsibility.

People should not have to prove how strong they are every time their infrastructure fails them.

Gary residents pay utility bills. They pay taxes. They are entitled to functioning infrastructure and competent disaster response just like Americans living in wealthier communities. Indiana Gov. Mike Braun eventually called NIPSCO’s response a failure and requested an investigation, while Gary Mayor Eddie Melton called the pace of restoration “unacceptable.” Federal disaster assistance was also approved. But by then, residents had already spent days living with consequences that went far beyond inconvenience.

That is why Gary reminds me so much of New Orleans.

Hurricane Katrina became one of America’s clearest lessons about environmental racism, poverty and governmental neglect. We saw what happens when a catastrophic weather event reaches a predominantly Black city whose infrastructure and residents have been failed long before the first raindrop falls.

Twenty-one years later, we should not need Gary to teach us the lesson again.

Climate disasters may be getting worse, but the storm is only part of the danger. The greater question is what kind of community the storm hits—and whether America has decided that community is worth protecting before disaster arrives.

Because Black people should not have to wait until the water rises, the food spoils or the lights stay off for two weeks before somebody decides we deserve help.

Gary did not simply suffer from a storm.

Gary suffered from what happened when the storm exposed everything America had already allowed to break.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Them wrote a beautiful article that I draw much of my information from, and I think you should read it.

Juju Nadeau was walking a path with some friends on Back Cove Trail next to Interstate 295 in Portland, Maine, as they were going to one of her favorite graffiti spots under Turkey’s Bridge.

While they were walking, a man, Glen Rodney, 58, approached them on a bicycle and pulled out a knife. The Portland Press Herald writes that he began chasin Nadeau and her friend, until when Rodney fatally stabbed Nadeau in the chest.

The GoFundMe talks about her friend Liz, who heroically did her best to pry the attacker away and cause him to run away. They called 911, and sat with Juju till the ambulance came.

Sadly, she later died at Maine Medical Center.

Rodney was arrested and charged with murder in her death.

MEDIA COVERAGE

As I wrote in the murder of Jayla Mcgee, Them writes, the initial media coverage misgendered and deadnamed Nadeau, this being a common disgusting macroagression trans people face after being the victim of a violent crime.

Nadeau’s partner talked with Them about how Nadeau was more than what the media would or wouldn’t cover correctly.

“It sounds cliche but she’s the most loving person,” DeWitt tells Them. “She was an angel sent here to make things better — and she did.”

There was a photo of her showing her personality, running through a hotel at Portland’s Furcationland in 2025 that became a meme amongst her friends.

CRITICAL ANALYSIS

• This is what happens when violent rhetoric is normalized. This is what happens when the President of the United States and his many minions choose to use violent language around trans people to push an political agenda. But this isn’t new, this violence has been indoctrinated in our society. It is alive in our subconscious, as non-trans people, and it is OUR responsibility to unlearn and relearn, and use our voices and bodies to defend our trans neighbors.

• Too often are trans people forced to advocate for themselves by themselves. Revolutions have been fought and won because of trans people. We use the term “silence is violence” when talking about racism, and I deeply agree. But what about for trans folks? Does your silence not also equate to violence? Especially when we remember that almost half of the trans woman killed this year are Black. Your silence does equate to violence already.

• Hate and ignorance. Juju was 21. So young. I am currently 26. I’m not sure how old you are, the person reading this, but here’s what I do know: the only reason she is not alive today is because of her identity. And that is not a society that I am okay with. Justice for Juju.

I often hear people talk about the school-to-prison pipeline as if it begins with an arrest.

But I find myself asking a different question:

What if it begins long before a young person ever steps into a courtroom?

What if it begins the first time a child is removed from a classroom instead of being supported inside one?

According to a new study published in the Journal of Education for Students Placed at Risk, millions of students continue to experience exclusionary discipline through both in-school and out-of-school suspensions, and those experiences vary dramatically depending on where students live.

That should make us pause.

If suspension were simply about student behavior, why would suspension rates differ so significantly from one state to another? Why would one district suspend students at a much higher rate than another? The researchers suggest these differences reflect more than individual behavior, they also reflect differences in policies, district characteristics, and neighborhood conditions.

Perhaps the most alarming finding is that, regardless of region or suspension type, Black students consistently had the highest suspension rates of any racial group. According to the study, Black students experienced the highest rates of both in-school and out-of-school suspensions nationwide, with the South reporting the highest rates of in-school suspensions overall.

That isn’t just a statistic.

It’s a pattern.

And patterns deserve our attention.

For years, conversations about school discipline have focused almost entirely on out-of-school suspensions. Yet according to the researchers, in-school suspensions occur at nearly the same rate nationwide. Removing a student from instruction, even if they remain inside the school building, is still a form of exclusion that can affect academic achievement, relationships with educators, and a student’s sense of belonging.

The question, then, is not whether discipline should exist. Schools need safe learning environments, and educators deserve classrooms where teaching can happen. The real question is whether exclusion has become the default response when support, intervention, or restorative practices may be more effective.

Research cannot tell us every reason why disparities exist. But it can tell us when a problem is too widespread to ignore.

According to the authors, district-level economic conditions and neighborhood racial composition were significant predictors of suspension outcomes. That means a student’s educational experience is shaped not only by their individual choices but also by the community and systems surrounding them.

That should concern all of us.

Because every suspension is more than a disciplinary action. For some students, it means lost instructional time. For others, it means falling behind academically. For too many Black students, it becomes one more point of contact with systems that remove them rather than invest in them.

Where does exclusion begin?

Maybe it begins the moment we stop asking why some schools suspend far more students than others.

Maybe it begins when we accept racial disparities as normal because they’ve existed for so long.

Or maybe it ends when we decide that every child deserves a school system that prioritizes opportunity before exclusion.

If we’re serious about disrupting the school-to-prison pipeline, then we have to be just as serious about examining the first places where students are pushed out.

Sometimes, those places aren’t courtrooms.

They’re classrooms.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On July 21st, a body was found burned and wrapped in a tarp along a Greenville, Mississippi, located near the 1500 block of Thornton Street on July 21, 2026, and has been identified as Robert Elliott, police said.

Elliot’s body was found by a passerby on the highway. Greenville police said detectives are working to process evidence, pursue leads and determine the circumstances of his death.

CRITICAL ANALYSIS

• I do not take it lightly that flock cameras only seem to work to stalk women the police do or do not know and to uphold their own talking points. Yet, in the countless cases of lynchings or undetermined Black deaths, flock cameras do not work nor do police investigations. We must recognize that the system, being the police, the judges, and the politicians are actively ignoring this conversation and/or covering it up as well.

• Burned and wrapped. There something so sinister, so sick that this demonstrates. Rope and fire are some of white supremacist favorite items to work with. May we remember the 16th Street Baptist church that was firebombed in Birmingham, AL, or when they burned Black Wall Street in Tulsa, OK, or when they firebombed an integrated bus in Anniston, AL.

• History tells us that this moment is unforgiving. It is our moment as Black people and allies to stand straight up. To fight the system and demand one that actually works for us. If this justice system, the policing system, and the economic system never changes; 60 years from now, Black people will still be murdered and lynched just like they were 60 years ago.

• Protect yourselves. Arm yourselves.

Grace Stephanie Calero Cabanilla, 39, and her daughter, Giulianna Mía Carriel Calero, 19, were driving to work when another vehicle hit the passenger side that was nearly fatal for both. WHAT HAPPENED?

On August 20th, Grace Stephanie Calero Cabanilla, 39, and her daughter, Giulianna Mía Carriel Calero, 19, were driving to work when another vehicle hit the passenger side that was nearly fatal for both.

Calero Cabanilla’s cousin, Jonathan Bravo, 37, told Newsweek

“It was a very severe accident,” Bravo said. “The car was completely totaled.”

Stating the crash caused the vehicle to roll about four times, in which the wheels and trunk came off and the front be severely damaged.

“She was in bed with a neck brace, trying to receive the proper medical attention that she needs,” Bravo said.

HCA Florida Poinciana Hospital gave a statement to Newsweek.

“Like all hospitals, we are required to comply with laws and regulations that govern interactions with verified members of law enforcement when they enter our hospital,” a spokesperson said. “At all times and no matter the situation, we do not deviate from our goal of providing the medical care our patients need and deserve.”

“As part of a crash investigation on Thursday, deputies went to the local hospital to speak with the occupants of one of the vehicles,” a spokesperson for the Polk County Sheriff’s Office told Newsweek. “As the deputies were obtaining information from those involved, it was discovered that the driver is in the United States illegally from Ecuador after overstaying an expired visa by several years.”

“ICE issued detainers for both women, and after the women were discharged from the hospital, they were taken into custody and transported to the Polk County Jail,” the spokesperson added.

But her said, Bravo, stated there was a pending asylum application and work authorization.

“My cousin was legally working,” Bravo said. “She applied for asylum; they provided her with a work permit, with a Social Security number.”

Explaining that she had proper visa documentation till 2030.

Neither women had any criminal record or history.

Bravo detailed the extreme levels of pain and injuries sustained, stating there was severe injuries to her neck, back, arm, legs, and knees; additionally, Carriel Calero suffered multiple seizures at the hospital expecting further treatment.

She was in a hospital gown. She was in a neck brace. All of which was captured on video.

Newsweek details what happened in the clip:

At the start of the clip, Carriel Calero sits on a gurney wearing a blue hospital gown, clinging tightly around the waist of her mother, who is dressed in a light blue button-down shirt and jeans. Multiple officers surround the bed and forcibly pull the women apart as Carriel Calero, screams in distress.

Something truly sickening about this is the level of consistency this story has with so many others. The family of Carriel Calero attempted to provide her with prescribed psychiatric medication while she was in custody, but they were told it would not be accepted.

In a time, where countless immigrants are dying from lacking medical attention or medication, we are watching their dehumanizing methods live.

CRITICAL ANALYSIS

• ICE is corrupt. ICE is evil. ICE does not care about you. ICE does not care about people. It is important when we read these stories to realize how we are here. We are here because politicians, both Republican and Democratic, have supported ICE and the police state without any question. ICE and the police is only here to serve the state, including when the state decides to kidnap and traffick.

• They almost died… Their car rolled four times… Yet, the second they were discharged, they were having to suffer with ICE in their rooms. She still had her hospital gown on. That is the sad state of affairs.

• It isn’t about “legality”, it was never about legality. If it was about legality, Epstein PDFs would have been arrested. If it was about legality, Trump would be in prison. The United States is not worried about legality or criminality, they are worried about who will give them unfettered support to achieve their material goals. Their goals being outlined as obtaining as much money as they can, while using Black, Brown, and POC and scapegoats to distract the white working, specifically.

• ICE facilities are concentration camps. They are people consistently dying inside, they are killing people before they arrive, and they are abusing countless people inside. Your taxpayer dollars are funding those, and the private companies operating them are making tens of millions of dollars every year. This week, that young person is Tyrin Johnson.

Tyrin was a beloved father and student, only 20 years old. On July 5, he was fatally shot by Tennessee National Guard soldiers while they were assisting law enforcement in Memphis. His family now mourns a life taken far too soon, while waiting for answers about the circumstances surrounding his death.

As more details emerge, this story is about more than one tragic encounter. It raises difficult questions about accountability, transparency, and what it means when people in uniform use deadly force against civilians.

WHAT HAPPENED TO TYRIN JOHNSON?

According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), officers responded to reports of gunfire in downtown Memphis during the early morning hours of July 5. Authorities say Tyrin fled on foot after officers identified him as a suspect. During that pursuit, two Tennessee National Guard soldiers fired their weapons, striking him. He later died at the scene.

Officials have stated that Tyrin was armed and turned toward the soldiers before shots were fired. However, the investigation remains ongoing, and many of the details surrounding those final moments have not been publicly released.

Like so many families before them, Tyrin’s loved ones are asking for transparency. They want answers. They want evidence. Most importantly, they want the truth.

WHY WERE NATIONAL GUARD SOLDIERS PATROLLING MEMPHIS?

One of the biggest questions many have isn’t only why Tyrin was shot, it’s why National Guard soldiers were conducting patrols in Memphis in the first place.

The soldiers were part of the Memphis Safe Task Force, an initiative that places National Guard members alongside local law enforcement in an effort to combat violent crime. Supporters argue the program helps reduce violence. Others question whether military personnel should be involved in routine civilian policing at all.

ACCOUNTABILITY REQUIRES TRANSPARENCY

One detail that has stood out throughout this case is the lack of publicly available body-camera footage.

Body cameras cannot undo tragedy. They cannot bring loved ones home.

But they can provide answers.

They can establish timelines, clarify conflicting accounts, and strengthen public trust when questions arise. Without that evidence, families are often left piecing together the final moments of someone they love through official statements and news reports.

No family should have to wonder whether the full story will ever be told.

Transparency is not about assigning guilt before an investigation is complete. It is about ensuring the truth is accessible to both the family and the public.

WHO WAS TYRIN JOHNSON?

Before he became another headline, Tyrin was simply a young man trying to build a life.

He was a father.

He was a student.

He had people who loved him deeply.

Family members have described him as someone pursuing his education; he had goals, responsibilities, and a future he was still building.

When conversations only focus on investigations and evidence, it becomes easy to forget that someone lost a son. A child lost a father. Friends lost someone they expected to grow old with.

His life deserves to be remembered for more than the way it ended.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Tyrin Johnson was only 20 years old.

Whether this investigation ultimately confirms or contradicts the initial official account, one fact remains unchanged: another young Black family is grieving.

Justice is not only about what happens in a courtroom. It is also about transparency, accountability, and ensuring every family receives honest answers when someone they love dies during an encounter with law enforcement.

We should all be able to agree on that.

As this investigation continues, I hope Tyrin’s family receives the clarity they deserve. I hope the truth is not delayed or hidden behind bureaucracy. And I hope we continue asking difficult questions, not because we have already decided the answers, but because every life deserves to be treated with dignity, and every death deserves a full and transparent accounting.

There have been at least 57 immigrants who have died in facilities like this since Trump took office that claim "in-person and virtual legal and family visitation," along with "around the clock access to medical care... general and legal library access, dietician-approved meals, along with religious and specialty" meals. That is a quote from GEO group, the owners of the camp that killed someone yesterday. The blood is on hands of GEO group, ICE, Trump, and everyone supporting ICE.

WHAT HAPPENED?

A small press release was published by Mariana Press. They state the staff discovered Lian Yong during routine checks and then initiated an emergency medical response.

He was transported to the Commonwealth Health Center, where he was pronounced dead.

NMIDOC hasn’t released any more information, including what medically actually happened.

In accordance with established protocols, the Department of Public Safety and appropriate investigative authorities have been notified. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement have been notified. The matter is under investigation.

CRITICAL ANALYSIS

• One year ago, there were active protests across the region combating this concentration camp. Now, someone has died. This demonstrates again profit over people. It was reported that GEO Group was expected to exceed $70 million in revenue in the first year. It was additionally reported that 43% of GEO Group’s $600 million in annual revenues comes directly from ICE, or your tax-payer money. Your taxes are giving hundreds of billions to people who don’t care whether you live or die. GEO Group is another example of the wealthy prioritizing profit over people’s lives. Us living or dying only matters when money is involved.

• North Lake is not a new facility. It was built by GEO group in 1997 and held a contract for Federal Bureau of Prisons from 2019 to 2022, according to company records. until President Biden signed an executive order, ending all federal contracts with private prison companies. But what happened? President Trump quickly reversed that executive order once taking office last year. Now, people are dying.

• Private prisons have one goal in mind, maintain a high level of occupancy, since they are paid by how many beds are being used, i.e. occupancy levels. It becomes dramatically easier to fill up private prisons, obtain free slave labor, and earn hundreds of millions off immigrants who have simply sought a better life. ICE not only is aiding and abetting kidnapping and trafficking, it is using concentration camps as a money grab.

• Why are being Black people lynched from trees and immigrants found dead in concentration camps? Because they are killing us.

• They included why he was picked up by ICE. It was a list of multiple things, including alleged assault. I don’t care, frankly, that’s why I didn’t include it. No prior action warrants you being killed by ICE or the system.

• Abolish prisons. Abolish ICE.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I hate writing about the people this society constantly kills. Anyone who has died in a ICE facility has been murdered by the system. They have stripped them of their human rights, their right to medical care, their right to life, and their right to the land that was stolen from colonizers that now seek to traffick them.

We must be loud, it is disgustingly unacceptable.

And she was eight months pregnant when her attorneys say her boyfriend, Calvin Sidney, attacked her after their baby shower.

Now, Golden is the one facing a first-degree murder charge.

At what point are Black women allowed to protect themselves?

UPDATE: Since uploading my article, Keshia Golden accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter and receiving two years of probation. I’m happy that she won’t serve prison time and will be able to go home and raise her daughter. Her attorneys said she accepted the plea to ensure she could be there to watch her daughter grow up.

But it’s disheartening that our system put a Black woman in a position where accepting a felony conviction felt like the safer choice than going to trial while facing first-degree murder. Golden and her attorneys have maintained that she was defending herself and her unborn child. I’m relieved she gets to go home, but heartbroken that this is what “justice” looked like for her.

WHAT HAPPENED?

In October 2022, Golden stabbed Sidney in the leg after her attorneys say he slammed her head into a counter. The stab wound severed Sidney’s femoral artery, and he later died at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Golden’s attorneys maintain that she acted in defense of herself and her unborn child.

But the violence did not begin that night.

According to the Cook County Public Defender’s Office, Golden had called police more than 50 times to report abuse before Sidney’s death. Between June and September 2022, police responded to five domestic violence incidents involving the couple. In four of those incidents, Golden reported that Sidney had choked, punched, slapped or pushed her.

In July 2022, while pregnant, Golden obtained an order of protection against Sidney after alleging that he punched her in the face.

She called the police. She sought legal protection. She had an order of protection.

And when those things did not keep her safe, she defended herself.

Now, the state wants to prosecute her.

Do our bodies not matter?

Golden’s case has drawn support from domestic violence advocates, public defenders and community organizations that have called on the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office to drop the first-degree murder charge.

Earlier this year, prosecutors offered Golden a plea deal that would have reduced the charge to second-degree murder and resulted in two years of probation. She rejected it, maintaining that she acted in self-defense.

Prosecutors are expected to offer another plea deal Monday ahead of her scheduled trial.

“Keshia’s case raises questions about who in our society is allowed to defend their life. Black women are far more likely to face serious charges when they use force to defend themselves from their abusers,” the Cook County Public Defender’s Office said in a statement.

Prosecutors tell a different story.

Golden’s defense says the evidence tells the story of a woman trying to survive.

“The medical evidence supports Keshia; the physical evidence supports Keshia. The history of violence supports Keshia, and the truth supports Keshia,” Cook County Assistant Public Defender Kyan Keenan said ahead of the trial.

Golden has remained out on bond and complied with her pretrial requirements. Her public defenders say she has enrolled in educational courses and is looking forward to building a future with her family.

Her daughter, the same child Golden was carrying when Sidney died, is now 3 years old. According to Golden’s public defender, the child recently underwent surgery. Golden has been caring for her as she prepares to fight a first-degree murder charge.

That little girl has already lost her father.

AMERICA, IS IT WORTH LOSING TWO PARENTS?

For Black women, this case should force an uncomfortable question.

What exactly are we supposed to do?

Golden called the police. She sought an order of protection. She was eight months pregnant. Her attorneys say she was attacked while carrying her child.

When Black women tell the system that we are in danger, are we expected to wait until someone kills us before our fear becomes legitimate?

Golden’s trial is about more than her freedom. It asks whether a Black woman can be believed when she says she was afraid for her life and whether she is allowed to survive that fear without being punished for it.

We have spent generations watching Black women be expected to endure pain quietly.

WHAT HAPPENED?

This morning, August 21st, the police responded to a call they received an attempted suicide. By the time the Roanoke Rapids Police Department, Halifax County EMS, and the Roanoke Rapids Fire Department all responded, Demetrius Fleming was found, determined to be deceased and connected to a ligature.

The Roanoke Rapids Police Chief Lawrence Wiggins and others held a press conference to talk about the details of the incident.

Wiggins said the police are treating the case as an open equivocal death investigation, which means the investigators are not working from an assumption about how Fleming died.

“Everything is on the table, and we’re pursuing any and all leads that are available to us,” Wiggins said.

After being asked if there was any indication another person’s involvement, Wiggins said nothing is being ruled in or out.

Wiggins confirmed that an autopsy will be needed, yet stated he did not know when or where the autopsy would be conducted and expected to have more information by Monday.

Additionally, the police chief gave more information about the initial 911 call.

He indicated the caller was made from someone who was not at the scene but was apparently someone close to Fleming.

“When the call came in, that’s how it came in, and so when we responded, obviously we found the victim deceased,” Wiggins said.

They are working to obtain any business or camera footage for further investigation.

Wiggins acknowledged the implications of a Black man being found hanging, especially it being another Black man in North Carolina, after multiple Black people have been founded hanging.

“It is the elephant in the room,” Wiggins said.

“We can’t say they’re connected, and we don’t know the motivations behind why our incident occurred,” he said. “Again, it’s open. We’re pursuing every lead, and we can’t definitively say whether this was self-inflicted or whether this was malicious.”

Wiggins also said that information about Fleming’s personal life, personality, or psychological state would be treated as investigated material, as they have spoken with members of his family.

By the end of the press conference, he reiterated his desire to both be thorough and quick in order to bring closure without spreading confusion.

“I do believe it’s important that we do this investigation as thorough as possible, and that we do it as expeditiously as possible, so that way we can get the truth and the facts out there, and bring this family some closure,” Wiggins said.

CRITICAL ANALYSIS

• I can’t tell you exactly what happened to Demetrius Fleming, but I can say that something dangerous is happening across our country. Black people are being found hung and/or lynched on a regular. Justice for Demetrius Fleming. May you rest in peace.

• This is the first time I have read a police chief mention simply the societal implications of finding a Black person hanging. I think that is important, yet it is happening because of how loud we are being on social media and in our communities. Roanoke Rapid community members have been applying pressure. That matters.

• Recently, a Black man in Raleigh was found hanging outside a festival. The police found and confirmed footage of this incident stating he died by suicide. The video hasn’t been confirmed by media or outside groups, but I think it demands an uncomfortable conversation. Including one with myself about “Black people don’t hang themselves” or any variation. I said “Black people don’t hang themselves on trees,” and I think that might be a mistake we are making. I’m worried that our trauma around lynchings might be inadvertently perpetuating mental health crisis amongst us. Black people are being attacked, lynched and murdered at increasing rates right now without a doubt. Yet, silently Black people are suffering mentally worse than ever before. “Black Americans have seen their overall suicide death rate climb 53% between 2014 and 2024.” None of us have the answers, but we need each other more than ever right now.

• I say all of that knowing that historically those lynching us and covering it up were the police and the judges. We need to maintain a high level of critical analysis to demand true justice, whether that is letting the family rest after tragedy or incessantly speaking up. Many have called for the footage to be reviewed by an outside source for the Raleigh case, because of that reality. This dissonance is ringing throughout our entire community: why should I trust the police’s investigation?

• The NAACP made this statement I wanted to include part of it:

  • “We recognize the profound pain, grief, and concern this incident has caused throughout our community. Given our nation’s history, the image of a Black man found hanging from a tree evokes understandable fear, trauma, and outrage. Those feelings are real, and they deserve to be acknowledged with both compassion and respect. According to the information released by the Raleigh Police Department, the death was officially ruled a suicide after the department reviewed surveillance footage from nearby businesses. This finding does not change the impact felt by his family or the constant wave of fear that shoots through our community every time a Black body is found hanging. This is truly a tragedy, and we are sorry the family has to endure it.

• Check in with your ‘strong’ friends. Give them a hug. Keep your friends and family close. Arm yourselves.

WHAT HAPPENED?

More than a week ago, deadly storms that killed at least 7 people have left tens of thousands of people without power in Gary, Indiana.

As of Thursday morning, there are still 63,500 NIPSCO customers without power in the Northwest Indiana region.

It has been 9 days already, and according to NIPSCO, the power will not be fully restored til next Tuesday at the earliest.

The notion of intentional neglect came in the last 24 hours. NIPSCO released an estimated power restoration schedule for different areas across Northwest Indiana, yet they initially left Gary off of the list.

A Gary resident spoke out.

“That’s ridiculous. It’s unacceptable. They need to do better,” said Bridget Sanders. “We are being left behind everytime something goes on. Gary is left behind. We are the last ones on the totem pole to get anything done.”

HOW IS THIS CONNECTED TO RACE?

There are several studies that highlight how FEMA and disaster relief generally is unequitable. Currently, we are watching Gary, Indiana be left without any hope with more than a week of a continual blackout. This is deeply reminiscent for me to watching Katrina as a Texan in the neighboring state. Not only remembering the kids who I grew up with because they were forced to leave their homes, but also remembering the harrowing scenes of people rejoicing ‘it was over’, when in reality thousands of houses were still below water.

The Center for American Progress released in article in 2022, How FEMA Can Prioritize Equity in Disaster Recovery Assistance.

They include that several studies show the inequities in disaster relief, with Black disaster survivors receiving much less government support than their white counterparts even when the amount of damage and loss are the same.

This inequitable response create even worse outcomes.

In counties struck by law disasters, Black survivors see their wealth decrease by $27,000 on average while white survivors see their wealth increase by $126,000 on average.

An analysis of FEMA grants awarded to 1,621 counties between 2012 and 2015 showed that counties with with a significant population of African American, Latino, or Native American residents, experiencing the same amount of damage as counties of primarily white American residents, received less funding from FEMA.

Specifically, as researchers note, they target their efforts towards homeowners and wealthier individuals.

The NAACP and the Legal Defense Fund also released a signed letter to FEMA speaking on the disparities and demanding change.

They included multiple important points, some of which are included here.

Renters do not receive the same disaster recovery benefits. This includes the Individual and Households Program (IHP), which provides financial assistance and direct services to eligible individuals and households affected by disaster.

On average, homeowners receive 2 1/2 times the IHP assistance renters receive. Total disbursements between 2006 and 2018 were $9 billion for homeowners compared with $2.5 billion for renters.

If we use Hurricane Katrina as an example, 29% of single-family homes were damaged in Louisiana versus 35% of rental units. Despite that, 62% of homeowners received disaster recovery assistance, and only 18% of renters got similar aid.

How is this related to race?

Because of systematic racists efforts like redlining and home loan programs, only 44% of Black Americans in the United States own their homes, compared with 74% of white Americans. Homeownership as it exist today is the reflection of a racist system.

Back to Hurricane Katrina as an example, in 2005, New Orleans had 7,700 public housing apartments, 5,146 units were occupied. Following Katrina, the U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced a plan to tear down over 4,500 apartments—and only build 800 new units.

It isn’t just rentering versus homeownership.

The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated even further the existence of racial disparities within disaster relief.

Communities of color had more difficulty accessing government funds during the pandemic than white American communities. In Georgia, for example, 53% of unemployment benefit applications by African American employees were denied, while 42% of applications by white American employees were denied.

Then we additionally have to contend with how intentional placement of factories, highways, and other environmentally damaging facilities in Black communities… i.e. the impact of environmental racism.

Disasters often cause things such as chemical spills and complex debris cleanup, which leads to the soil and/or water in Black and POC communities to be much more contaminated.

CRITICAL ANALYSIS

• When the system of chattel slavery was abolished, the white man knew there need to be new ways to oppress, steal from, and make inferior non-white people. Specifically, that is why systems like these are in place. They give the most benefits to homeowners, because of the fact that they intentionally took the ability to own a home from Black communities. The racist GI bill, redlining, and more prevented Black people from the top way of accumulating wealth, home ownership. Now, when they create programs that target homeownership without creating programs that increase homeownership amongst Black people, we must deduce it is an intentional way to prevent the same benefits for equitably reaching Black people.

• Black survivors see their wealth decrease by $27,000 on average while white survivors see their wealth increase by $126,000 on average. This statistic alone should cause us to reestablish our disaster relief programs. They are using every mechanism, including natural disasters to syphon money and institute disadvantage, while ensuring a wealth bonus of an average of two annual salaries.

• I am using Katrina as an example, because that is how we prevent more from happening. New Orleans had 7,700 public housing apartments, 5,146 units were occupied. Following Katrina, the U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced a plan to tear down over 4,500 apartments—and only build 800 new units. The system itself used a natural disaster to steal 6,900 available public housing apartments from working class people, from the people who would have needed it the most. Their plan was to build 800 new units after tearing down 4,500 apartments, in a place where 5,146 units were occupied. They plans to build back intentionally left more than 4,000 people unhoused.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Gary, Indiana is not a rarity. It sadly is commonplace. It is representative of why “woke 1 was not crazy”. It highlights the reality that the system up to and including disaster relief is intentionally using any means possible to increase subjugation and reliance on a billionaire somewhere. These systems disportionately affect Black people and majority Black cities just like Gary.

WHAT HAPPENED?

MeidasTouch did great reporting getting this story out!

According to the account provided by his attorney, it was 6:30 a.m. on August 11, he was walking to work when a truck quickly approached him and two unidentified men jumped out and ran after him. So, of course, he ran not knowing who was chasing him.

As he was fleeing, he was struck with what he believes was either a stun gun or taser. The next thing he remembers is waking up many hours later in the hospital. Unknowing of what happened next, how he sustained his injuries, how he was transported, or how he even ended up in the hospital anyway.

When he finally woke up, Mejia Hernandez saw two ICE agents at his bedside, realizing that he had brutal facial injuries consistent with blunt force trauma, yet no memory of what happened. Those ICE agents never left his bedside and prevented any private opportunity to speak with his medical providers.

He was being left in the dark about his own medical condition. ICE agents told him they did not know what happened to him, the hospital staff gave limited answers speaking reluctantly with agents present, and speaking more to the ICE officers than with him.

But there was a nurse who made an incredibly courageous act, and she quietly told him in Spanish, that he had suffered a brain bleed and there was swelling in his brain.

According to his attorney, he was never given a full explanation of his diagnosis, his treatment, or how the injuries occurred. Mejia was forced to remained almost completely ignorant about his own condition, while ICE agents are being paid to maintain him in the dark.

They continued reporting that neither DHS nor the hospital ever notified the family of Mejia Hernandez about his detainment, injuries, or hospitalization. Leaving his wife and stepchild without any idea of his whereabouts or condition.

Still unknowing of what was happening, he was transported from the hospital to an ICE office, offered food and drink, and told to contact his family. Once he arrived, they placed a GPS ankle monitor on him, gave him paperwork, including a Notice to Appear telling him to report the following Monday to ISAP. He was then discharged still not understanding the extent to what happened to him and how why he was injured the way he was.

His attorney reports that by Friday, after feeling worse than before, he went to the hospital, where he was again diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury and brain bleed. He remained hospitalized for around two more days, still needing further evaluation, including an MRI.

If everything that happened wasn’t already sufficient explanation for how ICE operates and the evil nature infused in the foundation, this should.

On August 17, Mejia Hernandez went to an ISAP appointment with his counsel and medical documentation; he was seeking the removal of the ankle monitor to allow for MRI imaging.

According to his lawyer, ISAP refused to remove the monitor unless a specific time and date could be provided for an MRI appointment.

They forced him to go back to the doctors who diagnosed him previously to schedule an appointment, all so the ankle monitor could come off for a doctor’s appointment that he would have never needed if ICE didn’t attack him at 6:30 in the morning.

Eventually, he finally scheduled an appointment for August 18 at 7:00 p.m..

It is important to reiterate he is doing this all suffering an incredibly traumatic brain injury.

CRITICAL ANALYSIS

• He still does not know the full extent of what happened to him, because he was not conscious. He obtained the vast majority of his brain damage in moments he cannot remember and that is disgusting.

• White folks have to be willing to put their bodies on the line to prevent the extreme amount of violence that is happening. Black and Brown folks are being murdered, and if not murdered, extremely brutalized. We need to be creating separate systems that protect our neighbors.

• Abolish ICE. That is the point. Tear it down. Find them and arrest them.

• Mejia Hernandez could not receive the MRI he needed, because ICE believes it has the right to place ankle monitors on immigrants. No system, no policies created by the elites in power can tell us what is ‘just’ or what is ‘our right’. The elites in power would have never accepted abolishing chattel slavery, if not for the people. As we know, the elites maintain modern day slavery in our prisons, including immigrants detained by ICE; it will never be abolished if not for we, the people. We must reject their premise of ‘rights', and we need to force the reality of justice and freedom. Including abolishing ICE and abolishing our prison system.

WHAT IS HAPPENING?

According to AP news, the agency is proposing to subsidize liability insurance for the state and local officers who participate in the violent deportation regime.

There has been an exponential increase in ICE’s partnerships with local departments since President Trump returned to office, and this is another effort to increase partnerships with local departments who had been more reluctant.

This is where the scam begins.

Under ICE’s plan, officers would purchase insurance covering up to $500,000 in personal liability, specifically to cover legal fees, settlements and judgements. However, annually, the same officers would be reimbursed up to $250, the estimated cost of the insurance.

In summary, ICE is proposing to pay for officers’ insurance as an incentive to get them to join. That if you enforce immigration, you will be legally protected to violently abuse the public as you wish, and the federal government is paying the insurance bill.

That is horrific.

But that is not everyone’s opinion, Justin Smith, a former Colorado sheriff and the current executive director of the National Sheriffs’ Association thinks it’s a great idea.

“Right now, any time you are working on immigration there is going to be a much higher potential for there being problems and having suits and issues,” he said. “They’re recognizing that it is a different environment. And I think trying to be good partners with us as best they can.”

Now, two questions to consider: First, why is there a ‘higher potential’ for problems, issues, and lawsuits? Because ICE is perpetually violating people’s constitutional rights, and them getting insurance is because they know they are stopping. Second, he says "They’re recognizing that it is a different environment,” what is that environment? It is one of brutally kidnapping at elementary schools. It is one of people consistently dying in concentration camps. It is one of people murdered on the street. All in hopes to get rid of ‘the criminals’, yet if you ask me, the criminals are seeking insurance right now. But the environment is optional, it is needed to be abolished.

ICE’S LOCAL PARTNERS ARRESTS ARE SPIKING

The AP released their finding on how ICE is already increasing its local partnerships. ICE has been offering large financial incentives to local agencies who participate in immigration enforcement.

There is currently around 1,600 agencies in 32 states working in conjunction with ICE’s task force model, where local officers interrogate, arrest, and charge people, according to ICE data.

Local departments qualify for funding to cover expenses like their officers’ pay, equipment, and vehicles.

CRITICAL ANALYSIS

• ICE is gearing up for war, not against some mystical foreign country, but against you and your neighbor. They have acquired shock gloves and are now obtaining insurance to protect them from the consequences of their actions.

• ICE is using every incentive possible to get more agencies to join? Why? Because it is not, and it was never just immigrants. This is about how those who challenge the state can have their rights and citizenship stripped from them. (Influencers or college activists being considered domestic terrorists)

WHAT HAPPENED?

The Omaha Police Department stated that shocks gloves have been delivered to school resource officers at 29 Omaha area schools, with 5 more schools still awaiting training. A school that is designed for teaching children is already using the same violent technology that the ICE, a murderous para-military group, is planning to use.

The Omaha Police Department said Friday that the gloves have been used twice by school resource officers, both times used on students.

During a Friday press conference, Jason Civitano an Omaha Police officer, gave a demonstration and described both incidents in which the gloves were used.

“The officer was trying to get this individual away from the school to leave. The commands were given. There was a refusal. It was a quick touch with the glove and then the officer was able to secure that individual,” Civitano said.

Describing the other incident with much less detail,

“The other one, I believe, was in a high school and again, noncompliance, and so the officer chose in this situation to utilize the glove. No reported injuries,” Civitano said.

We know that there is violence in schools, people targeting schools. Yet, we also know that police have done nothing to curb why this violence is occuring. They perpetuate the school-to-prison pipeline, including reporting “91% more nonserious crimes, property crimes and instances of disorderly conduct to police than similar schools that don’t use school police,” per the ACLU.

Or even on the most horrific of cases, we remember moments like Uvalde, where the police merely watched and waited.

Police are not solving the problem, they are reinforcing a society built off violence or compliance.

CRITICAL ANALYSIS

• Does this look like solving the problem to you? This looks like a prime example of capitalism. A child safety at school is a profitable market for business. People are making millions, if not billions, off of the simple fact that schools in America are not safe. And our government would rather incentivize profit margins, than actually solving root issues of why children are being killed at school.

• It has maybe been a week since school has started, and in a lot of places across the country, school still hasn’t started. But Omaha School Resource Officers have already used the weapon on students twice. The frequency that we will see students forcefully immobilized by officers will be record breaking, and I am worried for the potential injuries that will occur.

• Both incidents were "within policy”. Is that surprising to you? Of course not. It is a horrifying example of the status quo between citizen and police officers. The violence is always warranted. The violence is always justified. The violent perpetrator is always protected. 98% of officers never even have charges brought against them when they kill someone, what do you think will happen here?

This was no accident. We live in one of those most hyper-surveilled society, yet Black people are being hung from a tree and no one ever seems to figure out how. We are living through a lynching campaign, one where Black people can be strung up without ever seeing justice. Black people are not hanging themselves on trees.

WHAT HAPPENED?

A woman who works nearby spoke to The NC Beat, incredible on-the-ground reporting in North Carolina, said the man had been seen earlier walking and talking to himself. A little bit later in the day, the man approached a festival-goer and asked for water before continuing on.

She said the man was discovered around 2:30 p.m. in the back parking lot area near a restaurant, not far from the festival.

By the time workers in the area checked the back lot shortly after 2:30 p.m., he was found hanging.

According to a statement from the Raleigh Police Department, first responders responded at approximately 3:07 p.m. to the festival, after a report of someone hanging from a tree.

First responders removed the man from the tree and initiated life-saving measures.

He was pronounced deceased as a result of his injuries.

The incident is being investigated as a suicide. The Office of the Medical Examiner has taken custody of the case and will conduct its investigation.

THERE IS A MODERN LYNCHING CAMPAIGN HAPPENING

In May, Juliana Nzita was found hanging. In June, Cedric Tayuhe was found hanging. 2 days ago, another Black man was found hanging. That is just North Carolina. Then we think about Mississippi, Florida, or Texas and the victims keep adding up. Black people are being found hanging from trees, nearly once a week right now. That is a society in which I do not want to live, that is a society in which we are reminded that of the ‘2020 Great Performances’ that have led to Black people still being murdered, and the laws never changing to protect us.

The NC Office of the Medical Examiner has consistently failed to bring justice and seek truth when Black people are found hanging in NC. We must demand better, because currently, this is another instance of how the system protects some and disregards others. The medical examiners nationwide are failing open book tests when Black people are on their tables. It is not new, it is intentional. We cannot accept their lies and attempt to cover up murder.

It took the police 37 minutes to arrive on scene. Why?

WHERE IS BIG MEDIA?

We have countless independent reporters, concerned citizens, and Instagram pundits tirelessly reporting on the modern lynching campaign, but where is big media? They have all of the budget and energy, yet somehow they continuously only report on what pays them. But they aren’t our moral compass.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On Wednesday morning, Jomiltron walked from his apartment to the bus stop across the street around 6:49am. As he was about to board the bus, an unidentified male approached him.

Officials say that at some point a brief struggle ensued, and that’s when a gunshot rang out, hitting a child, Jomiltron Sentell Fair Jr.. Police attempted life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead.

A witness noticed a car circling the block and feeling that something was off. As her friend was boarding, she watched as the fight broke out, saw his phone get stolen, and then heard the gunshot..

“It was scary because it was right there by the window I was at, then everybody started jumping out the exit,” she said.

WBTV reports school bus surveillance footage captured the shooter fleeing to a waiting getaway car, noting it appeared to be a teenager.

The coroner was heartbroken by this senseless death.

“This is an absolute tragedy,” the coroner said. “It’s a sad world when our children cannot be safe while going to school. My heart is heavy for this student’s family and those 15 students who were on board the bus and witnessed this heinous crime.”

No suspects have been identified, and no arrests have been made at this time.

Fair’s family said the high school senior was planning to graduate early and was looking forward to becoming a father.

Starting this morning, extra police officers are watching his high school, the surrounding areas, and the bus stops to ensure kids safety.

CRITICAL ANALYSIS

• This should trigger sadness, yet that sadness should not be left alone. It should trigger a realization that those in power are using our kids and our communities as a sacrificial lambs to achieve greater power and control. When politicians is receiving money from gun lobbying, they are admitting to materially supporting the murder of kids. They are ensuring the means that end up killing us.

• I hate that kids setting up a bus memorial is a headline. The headline should be “Kids graduate at record numbers”, “Gun violence is decreasing at record numbers’.

• Be safe. Protect your kids.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Rest In Peace, Jomiltron Sentell Fair Jr.. He was 17. He was planning to graduate early. He brought life and joy to his friends every single day. He deserved so much, and this world gave him so little. How many young people are being killed and no one ever hears? This is not an acceptable reality. We should not and cannot accept that kids just are being shot and killed at a bus stop.

I am sad writing this article. Every day, I am a little more heartbroken by these stories. Yet, these stories are so important. These stories have to be shared. We have to document this reality, because there will come a day, when they try and tell us what actually happened. But we will not stand for anymore lies, and we cannot accept this system.

In the same city and only one month after the murder of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, federal agents detained 54-year-old Juan Francisco Monroy Turuy, a Guatemalan immigrant, and he is now being held a concentration camp in Montgomery County as of Wednesday. Yes, concentration camps, because I don’t remember people dying at increasing record numbers in a ‘safe’ detainment camp.

WHAT HAPPENED?

A 24-year-old, David Menendez, allegedly fired a shot into the air and was carrying around a firearm in a Home Depot parking lot, when 54-year-old Juan Francisco Monroy Turuy called the police.

The Houston Police Department arrived at the scene found the suspect and charged him with unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, adding to his extensive criminal history of about a dozen prior arrests.

According to the police report (which we should take with an extreme grain of salt), as the officers investigated the shooting, the witness who called police was then detained by an ICE agent.

The HPD officer, “multiple bystanders running away from the parking lot” and the “reportee” was detained.

And which testifies to the character of the witness and the nature of ICE and the policing system, he still helped identify the suspect, and said “I’m sure that’s him. I saw the gun and was afraid,” according to the report.

The HPD officer then wrote, “ICE agent then took my reportee and left the scene.”

HOUSTON PD ROLE

In this case HPD claims it did not call ICE, but why should we believe them? Recent department data shows officers contacted ICE more than 100 times from April through June after encountering people with civil immigration warrants during a call.

According to that same data, 34 of those cases involved someone calling emergency responders for help.

So, does it matter if they didn’t call them this one time? No, because they call them all the time.

A major part of these stories in the news articles from this incident mention how it will be more difficult to prosecute crimes and more crimes will go unreported.

“Because this person is a material witness to this crime, we’re actively trying to find them, to interview them again,” said Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare.

Teare said when a witness is taken by ICE, it makes prosecuting a case much more difficult.

“When ICE grabs people, they effectively go into a black hole,” Teare said.

He continues to talk about the fear of being detained by ICE that prevents them from test

He mentioned a case of aggravated sexual assault of a child.

“The outcry witness is here unauthorized, and he’s too scared to come to court to testify,” Teare said. “We’re having to either reduce our plea offers or outright dismiss cases against people that we know committed one of the most heinous acts out there.”

But should we protect immigrants only when its convenient? That is what this system is telling us that it prioritizes. When they need you for their job, they don’t want you detained; but the other 100 times they contacted the police and 34 other times you did help them, they still want you detained.

It is not simply a contradiction, it is a mirror to the system that we exist in. If you are useful, then you might live, if you are not useful, then your life and your freedoms are all at risk.

CRITICAL ANALYSIS

• It is about convenience. Once you no longer can become a means to an end, then the system sees you as a threat.

• It was never about criminality. Of that, we are positive. ICE isn’t here to make our streets safer, ICE is here to remind you of your place in this society. It’s not just immigrants, it is anyone who unwilling to accept the status quo. That is why ICE has killed anyone who has stood in their way, from white US citizens to Black undocumented immigrants.

• Any agency working in conjunction with ICE is corrupted. HPD is corrupted. They have called ICE 100x in a few months, and they try to absolve themselves saying they didn’t contact ICE this time. Abolice ICE. Defund the Police.

FINAL THOUGHTS

A man is sitting inside of a concentration camp today, because he reported a crime. An innocent immigrant has been treated with the same or more vile than a US citizen with a dozen priors shooting a gun in a parking lot. That is America.

A Royse City family is demanding accountability after a Black mother, Janiaca Wheeler, was violently dragged to the extent of ripping multiple locs out of her head, before detaining a mother and her daugher outside a neighborhood pool. All based on an older white couple questioning whether they lived in the community and were allowed to use the neighborhood pool - a sickening reminder of why Black people have negative perspectives of pools and white people’s perpetual belief in ownership.

WHAT HAPPENED?

A young Black teenager, the daughter of Janiaca Wheeler, was at a neighborhood pool with some of her friends. According to the family, the confrontation began from a misunderstanding after neighbors at the pool questioned whether they lived in the community and were allowed to use the pool.

Then the police responded to the reported disturbance, and of course, that is where it turned violent.

Video from the incident shows Janiaca Wheeler being violently dragged by her hair by a Royse City police officer before she was pinned to the ground. Wheeler said the officer ripped out several of her dreadlocks during the encounter.

The same video then shows Wheeler’s daughter being handcuffed and pinned to the ground while Wheeler’s other 4-, 6-, and 10-year-old were crying being forced to watch family subjugated to state violence.

And that isn’t it… It further shows an officer pushing two other young girls waway by placing a hand on their FACES.

The family has since filed a formal complaint with the Royse City Police Department. The police has placed the officer on administrative leave and opened an internal use-of-force investigation.

Police said they dropped the charges against Wheeler and her daughter the day after the incident.

WHAT DID THE FAMILY SAY?

The family detailed the fear they felt.

“I thought it was going to turn into something. So, I really just wanted him off of her, and whatever he needed to do that he was going to do to her, do it to me. Versus, my baby,” Wheeler said.

“My anxiety is out the roof. I didn’t think that it would ever get close to home. Right here to happen to me and my family,’ Janiaca Wheeler said.

It wasn’t just fear, it was the first time that her daughter had ever experienced something like this.

“I have never been in any trouble with the police. So I called my mom.”

Next Generation Action Network stood with the family at the police department and is working to ensure accountability.

“It was almost as if the police officer was disrespected by the fact that this mother wanted to know, why is this police officer aggressively hound handling her daughters in her friends and all of the children?” Dominique Alexander with the Next Generation Action Network asked.

Along with dropping the charges against the family, the department said it will release its findings and any disciplinary action once the investigation is completed.

“Once the internal investigation is completed, the police department will release its findings and will disclose any and all actions taken,” the statement said, adding the department takes “these types of matters very seriously.”

Next Generation Action Network plans to attend next week’s Royse City Council meeting with the Wheeler family to continue pressing city leaders for accountability.

“We want to make sure that this officer is terminated,” Alexander said.

CRITICAL ANALYSIS

• Is it a question why we say ‘Defund The Police’? There has been a conversation of sacrificing focus on police, yet they are fundamental to this conversation. The system of policing today is one built on intentional entrapment, violence, and dehumanization of Black people specifically, but anyone who challenges the state generally.

• Black people do not trust the police, and this is why. A misunderstanding that stemmed from a baseless accusation that these young Black teenagers did not belong. This is incredibly important, because it is history replaying itself. Too many Black people, Black children have been horrifically murdered because of accusations just like this.

• The violence that it takes to rip a the loc out of a woman’s head. This is a woman who came to protect her daughter. She said “whatever he needed to do that he was going to do to her, do it to me.” She knew that law and order would not be mandated by the officers, but the only mandate they had was violence. It demonstrates the failure and reality of a broken system that a Black woman knows before the violence ever occurs that it is coming.

• The officer is on administrative leave. The officer is being protected. 98% of all officers that have killed someone never have charges filed against them. This woman is alive after being violently attacked. Now what do you think will happen to the officer that brutally attacked her? AND WE MUST DEMAND JUSTICE.

• Black people under attack. I started this article talking about that. It is not a hyperbole. It is not an exaggeration, so please do not take it as such. Be safe. Arm yourselves.

• For allies, be loud, active, and put your body on the line. Frankly, this state is murdering Black people at alarming rates and covering up lynchings that occur in broad daylight.

• I intentionally didn’t include the daughter’s name or any of the names of the other children, because they are children.

FINAL THOUGHTS

A young Black teenager couldn’t enjoy the neighborhood pool, because an older white couple didn’t think they belonged. They alerted the pool attendant, and they called the police. That simple accusation led to extreme violence. Extreme violence that none of them will ever forget. They are waking up every day anxious, because of that one accusation. That is why your internalized racism that you ignore and don’t unpack is violence. Because you don’t see the violence of your consequences, but they do, in fact, exist.

For 16 days, Nekomia Quinn passed out flyers, called the morgue, and chased every lead possible… searching for her missing 15-year-old daughter, Khloe McDonel. Just for her daughter to already been found only two days after she was reported missing without her mother knowing.

WHAT HAPPENED TO KHLOE MCDONEL?

A local Jackson, Mississippi news outlet, WLBT3, hosted an exclusive interview with Khloe’s mother and other family members speaking out for the first time, demanding accountability from law enforcement agencies they say failed to tell the truth.

On July 18, 2026, Khloe McDonel was reported missing to the Jackson Department Missing Persons Unit. Two days later, Khloe McDonel (15) was found fatally shot near Shepard’s Park.

THE LACK OF TRANSPARENCY

Nekomia Quinn, Khloe’s mother, was searching for her daughter. She received a tip that a teenager was found in the park, so she immediately called the city morgue multiple times leaving her contact information… No one ever called her back.

“I said, hey, my child is missing, and I just want to make sure that’s not her that they found in the park,” Quinn said.

Around that same time, a detective came to Quinn’s home and swabbed her for DNA. The detective simultaneously told her not to panic, yet never told her why it was taken or what it was connected to…

“Detective Collins told me, don’t panic. You know, it’s just for precaution. Just in case,” Quinn recalled.

Quinn, assuming it was not her daughter found at the park, she kept searching. WLBT3 notes that she continued for more than two weeks passing out flyers, driving through neighborhoods, and sending tips to detectives and waiting for updates.

I can’t fathom for 2 weeks, looking for your daughter, and the whole time, the police found your daughter.

After 16 days of Khloe being reported missing and 14 days after the body was found, a Detective McGee came to Quinn’s house to tell her that they positively identified Khloe as the girl found at Shepard’s Park.

FAMILY’S RESPONSE

Nekomia Quinn said that the wait and the silence feels incomprehensible.

“I’m not understanding, okay, how can y’all identify another woman in the park through a picture, but couldn’t identify Khloe in the picture,” she said. “So it’s not making no sense to me.”

“For me to hear that, hey, that was your daughter the whole time — it’s just disappointing. It’s very disappointing.”

And it wasn’t just that, her mother also wants to know why no one at the morgue called her back. It is sickening to imagine that a scared woman searching for her missing daughter was ignored; that someone felt a simple phone call wasn’t even warranted.

This adds onto the reality that Black people, young and old, are being killed. We see kids going missing and turning up dead. We see kids hanging from trees. We see adults hanging from trees. There is an ongoing modern lynching campaign, these are intentional acts.

Quinn said she is grateful for the closure of what happened to her daughter, but she wants justice.

“I want accountability. I want answers. I feel like they need to be out there searching for whoever harmed my daughter,” she said. “She’s 15. She ain’t lived her life.”

She extended that call to anyone and everyone,

“Anybody that knows anything — please come forward,” she said. “Help us get justice. And I’m not going to stop until we get justice for Khloe.”

POLICE RESPONSE

According to the Jackson Police Department spokesperson, Capitol Police is the lead agency in the case.

Capitol Police said in response to the time waited in alerting Quinn of her daughter’s death that its policy is to notify next of kin "as soon as practicable” once a victim’s identity has been confirmed.

Capitol Police also said its policy is to notify next of kin “as soon as practicable” once a victim’s identity has been positively confirmed.

“After receiving confirmation from the Mississippi State Crime Laboratory that the missing person was Khloe McDonel, investigators traveled to the victim’s residence and notified her next of kin, her mother,” the statement read.

Capitol Police confirmed no suspects have been identified. The investigation remains active.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I can’t tell you what happened to Khloe McDonel, but neither can the police. And that’s the issue. We live in a hyper-surveillance state with police who track their ex-girlfriends with Flock cameras, but a missing Black kid that gets murdered isn’t possible? We have the ability to find out everything when it is necessary for profit or power, illuminating the horrifying reality that our lives are seen as a burdenful cog in the system or at best another story to cover. And we wonder why we are still here? Because it is not a design flaw, it is in the blueprint.

I wish justice for Khloe McDonel. I wish answers, love, and protection over her family.
