I’m writing to you today with a different kind of impulse. This newsletter began with a certain kind of attention. A certain kind of intention, even. And these intentions have changed. While I won’t go into (too much) detail, today I’m understanding new ways in which work and commitment can sustain you, not drain you. I wouldn’t say the intentions behind the newsletter have changed entirely - rather, they have shifted, morphed, gently surrendered to a new awareness in me and a new flow in my life (and creative practice ofc.)

All this to say that I'm writing to you in a place that feels new. And that is… interesting. Neither good nor bad, rather something of note that I am happy to also make you aware of as you read.

I have said some things already in my latest voice-note that I may end up repeating. This is an organic process. That’s what makes it alive. I’m also aware that I alluded (via Substack Notes) to several upcoming themes in my “next newsletter” i.e. this very text you are reading and I am (not very) sorry to say that not all of these themes will necessarily feature. The times are changing. Let’s roll with it.

Doing what feels good — what does that mean exactly and why is it relevant to my newsletter? To my art practice? And why share this? Well, I think sometimes, for a multitude of reasons, art and art-making can be hampered by this myth of the suffering artist. One must suffer to create good art…

etc. etc. etc.

And I think in some of us it is so hardwired that even when you’re aware of it, it still persists. For me, at least, it made itself manifest in the sense that I was so used to “using art to heal” (which is a good thing, or can be! - art is a powerful tool ofc.) that one day I became somewhat perplexed when I simply made something that felt good from start to end. No transmuting, no transforming, no alchemy. Oh, how dull!

So much of my Art, including this newsletter, was about facilitating this sort of change in experience. And what happens when I no longer require this change in experience? Well, I'm not sure; but, I did get some insight into the kinds of things I might want to expand upon when I created what I now refer to (affectionately) as “mermaid medicine” (a long-form version of the audio sketch in my most recent voice-note).

Of course there are a lot of things I’ve already made, or made part of (kind of like raw material) that I feel I want to bring to full fruition, but the landscape and terrain around this work and the making feels different. Less urgent. More playful.

On the topic of play (!) I had a wonderful experience that spontaneously arose after making the extended version of my ephemeral loop (1) / “mermaid medicine” instalment.1 I had just finished creating it and was listening to it myself when a poem by Sophie Strand came upon my feed.2 I decided, wouldn’t it be interesting to record myself reading this poem over the wordless vocals I had just recorded? So I did. I cannot share the result here, as even though I am currently a small creator, I am wary of copyright and fair use, seeing as Sophie Strand is a contemporary poet; but, I am planning on reading it aloud live at an informal poetry open mic alongside my recording, where the rules are a bit different!3

As I mentioned in my voice-note, I’m cancelling my two summer workshops. Well, I never set up a page for them; but, the idea did exist in some level of public-ness, so yes, the two events are no more. Instead, I’m going to make something and put it up for sale in my Big Cartel store. It will recreate the spirit of the workshop and you will be able to do it in your own time & space! Neat!

Around the same time, I’ll also be uploading the six poems live reading. Poetry galore <3 !!!!!!!!

I’ve decided to intentionally rest and celebrate and enjoy my life as much as possible in the month of August, as it is my birthday month! I love having a birthday month because it means I can pack it full to the brim with lovely things while resting as well. It means I’m not hampered by the need to pick a date to “celebrate” that works for different people being away at different times, and if I feel like resting and doing nothing on my actual birthday, it won’t matter because I’ve already filled the month with lovely social interaction. Less pressure = more fun. Feels good!

I’m not sure I’ll be sending along a newsletter in August. Looks unlikely.

no, i’m an artist, but I do love flowers.

“BLOOM!” started as a way to find an audience for my work outside of usual social media. i was frustrated with the landscape of things. my work wanted to be seen by more eyes than my own. and I wanted legitimacy, a following, but I wasn’t quite sure what I was going to be sharing just yet. you see, I do a variety of things, and the flower metaphor was just perfect. who doesn’t love the image of a flower unfolding? who can deny the magic/ mysticism/ beauty/ insert word here of flowers? the multiplicity of petals? ahhhhh!

Yes, this newsletter is late but isn’t it also just perfectly on time?

What have I been up to? well, a little of something, a little of nothing.

Time is an interesting, beautiful beast.

Slippery, cyclical, elusive, out-of-reach. Sometimes, crip-time rules the skies. Other times, the spiral sends me up and down, up and down, a journey I somewhat begrudgingly consent to because I need to get better.

When it comes to being an artist, I feel like I’ve got a visual image of a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly calendar in my head at all times, coalescing with my body’s timings, my cyclical needs, my need for rest, my need for quiet.

I often feel frustrated as an artist, that I’m running out of time, that I should be there by now. Or, I am serene, composed and trusting - “all in its own time”. I arrive when I arrive.

We slip between modes, don’t we? A little dance, a little sway.

As someone who sets her own deadlines, it can sometimes feel like i’m grappling with a too-soft structure - who put this there? it is unnecessary. But self-imposed deadlines make the work work.

I have several deadlines this year and so far so good, but one’s state of health can soften these walls into goo. And so it goes.

BANSHEE is beginning. Audio recording this month. Then the video, then some visual art (fingers crossed - my mini printing press just arrived!) … and my poetry workshops in Queen’s Wood look to be happening in August and September(???), the flyers will be printed soon.

I’ve got two more songs to make videos of and then I want to do a live performance with all four of them. probably in the woods - pourquoi pas? (i’ve played these songs live before at open mics and other events/ shenanigans but not as a real performance - intentional, artistic, whole.)

iirc this used to be a preacher’s pit and it was shaped by miners carving out the seats. originally the depressed shape was formed by the ground giving way into an abandoned mine below.

When I’ve put things on in the woods (qww in 2024) and now when i’m planning two experimental poetry workshops in the woods this summer (more info in next newsletter), I consider what might happen if it rains. It’s just something you need to consider when you’re doing particular activities outside, I guess, especially if you’re using paper, pens etc.1

We don’t have the luxury of a strict rainy season in London, where rain can be predicted or avoided. It just comes and goes, hard or soft, every season, sometimes more frequent, sometimes less.2 As I write this I’m reminded of an event I put on many years ago now (as I say, time’s a funny beast) in an entirely different climate, where planning around impending downpours or (piddling) drip drops of rain was unnecessary (there’s a more defined rainy season, easier to manoeuvre, and in certain months it’s guaranteed to be dry). It wasn’t my first time directing a creative event/ project, because I ran an underground music night at university; but, it felt pretty formative.

We’re going back 7 years or so, so hang on tight, we’ll be back in the present shortly… it’s 2019 and I’m coming to the end of my year in CDMX. I lived and worked in the same space, helping it to become a functional creative space for events/ an artist residency space over the year (while also working as a translator and waitress!). Before I left for Xilitla and Las Pozas, then back to London, I curated a show on the rooftops of the casa (I called it FINALMENTE ! and promoted it with the song Finally by CeCe Peniston). I’d already been to quite a few rooftop parties and shows, and it felt pretty fitting to end my stay with something I organised myself that brought people from different places together.3

As well as there being hanging art on the walls, I organised for a friend to outline a mural design that everybody attending could easily participate in, blurring the line between artist and audience :)

There’s probably a whole chunk of stuff I could recall about my year in México and how formative it was for me as an artist… but we’ll return to the present now. I suppose I remembered this because it was quite a notable experience but also because I find it interesting how the climate shaped the spaces that were most desirable or accessible. Unless it was the rainy season, rooftop parties were the norm, especially for artists, musicians and writers (at least, in the more DIY circles I moved in. I think I went to one courtyard party as well haha)

Researching outdoor theatres in Cornwall, or stages on an Austrian lake, or recalling rooftop events in CDMX feels exciting to me because of how the natural world is so deeply interwoven with my art & song. And if nature and art are so entwined in the “product” and gestation, why not the staging or presentation?

I also think it’s important for events to be accessible to the covid-cautious, and I feel like there’s a lot of possibility in the outdoors to connect with the natural world in new and exciting ways (through stagecraft, curation, costume etc.)

Honestly, I miss the DIY aspect of some of my previous work. I love just being able to set something up, invite some people, and not need to plan things extensively or worry too much…

Hi, my name is Angelica and I’m an artist. Art does for me what I’m sure it does for many of you - it enriches my life, and gives it dimension and clarity. I’m referring to both making it and enjoying it as an “audience member”. But let me for one moment focus on the making part.

What it comes to making art, I do not consider it hyperbole to say that it helps me to survive. My practice is intrinsically linked to my sense-making as well as my self-soothing. For four years none of my work was public. As this newsletter grew and morphed into BLOOM! it did so alongside my creative practice becoming more public.

I consider my practice (this includes all forms of art making, including music) to oscillate between private, private-public and public. I think these differences are important to distinguish when it is such a vital life force for me, as I’m sure it is for many of you reading.

Creating my website last year was a really important step for me in making public part of my creative ecosystem. If you’re new or you haven’t seen it, click here.

Having this website gives me a sense of autonomy as an artist. It also helps me not to feel so precious about my work. Which is strange given a website is traditionally quite a formal thing. But I find a platform like Instagram actually necessitates more polish, more product (and less process) than a website.

One of my favourite pieces I made during these four private years was this.

It’s an oil painting I originally worked on (birthed if you will) back when I had a studio in Hackney Wick. I slashed through it in a moment of rage, contained some of the brushstrokes in black and subsequently left it for some time in that state. Then a year or so after, in my home studio, I sewed up each slash with ribbon. I also created grommet holes for the ribbon to thread through. I love this work.

You see, for pretty much my whole life, I’ve endured a number of setbacks, or as I occasionally (and in an understating fashion!) refer to them - a series of unfortunate events - that I have attempted to unentangle, assuage, clarify and remedy through art. This piece, part-textile part-painting, is one of such artworks.

And I believe my best work is to come - is in front of me. If you’re here, you’re here for the ride, the journey. (Hi! It’s great to have you here.)

I turned to music at one point (although it feels like a series of points) because visual art failed to facilitate the communication I so desperately craved. I needed song, lyrics, melody. Not shape and line (although a line is a line is a line).

For me music is part of my whole practice. For some time, I faintly modelled myself after various singer-songwriters I met in London, failing to keep up, to perform as they performed. My music was art, was soul. I wasn’t a folk singer!! Although I do love to wear a cool cap and vintage threads.

So, realising this, I embraced my limitations. I created a music video over a series of months, working mainly from home, sometimes from bed, and when I felt energised enough we (a friend and I) filmed in the woods.

I realised what I wanted to communicate through music was in the same world as the art practice and the ecosystem I developed in my one year at art school. It also had a home in some of the literary worlds I was introduced to at Cambridge (although I really hated my degree and felt like a dying fish out of water, if you hadn’t heard me say that already, even without the glandular fever turned chronic fatigue syndrome and horrifying stress and undiagnosed childhood trauma and assault.)

Now, when I work from my home studio, I feel like I’m world-building, even if I don’t quite know what it means yet. Am I building a home within a home? Am I envisioning new systems for my local community, or the wider world? Am I facilitating change through praxis? Am I healing?

I’m still living in these questions. One at a time. And you’re here with me, reading this, witnessing it. That is a gift.

I have recently established a section for my newsletter just for audio. I plan to dispatch a podcast/ audio episode in a couple of days so look out for that. If you’re subscribed here, you’ll receive it!

How are you navigating the ebbs and flows of your life, or creative practice? Are you interested in the act of creation as a lifelong path? Do you feel like there are obstacles in your life you might make art about?

I love considering all the different ways art and life are entangled.

I think of a flourishing creative practice as a blooming garden/ a garden in bloom. I think there’s a nod to that in the title of my newsletter, and maybe some inherent wish-fulfilment there.

I’m currently focussed on my livelihood and my developing health treatments. I’ve been playing guitar a little, and dreaming up different avenues for the BANSHEE project.

I’d also love to facilitate some workshops this summer, and have been jotting down all the ideas I have in my sketchbook! So let’s see.

Technically, spooky season starts in September (according to Google anyways), although I’m not sure there’s anything technical about this term… anyway, spooky season, or a spooky vibe, starts for me in the run up to Samhain (pronounced sow-un). I find myself being reminded of the dead, of the dark — or the veil, if you will.

Whatever your beliefs, I think this time of the year is a beautiful time to honour the deceased. These may be your ancestors, or artists who inspire you who are now gone from the flesh-and-blood realm. When I lived in Mexico we celebrated Día De Los Muertos which is a beautiful and holy practice. Lots of fun, too!!! I still remember it well.

All this to say that my creative practice is currently complemented by the just as creative practice of ritual-making and dreaming. It’s for this reason that I may be slower to follow up this newsletter with another, because I am more engaged in being rather than doing (or perhaps, action of a slightly different flavour).

I also find myself wanting to slow down as the nights get darker earlier in October… (which, let’s not lie, can feel more dangerous for women in big cities… so stay safe everyone please!! or buy this. ;))

At home, I am making more things on my tablet in a more restful place, and I find myself waiting slightly longer before beginning large tasks. The turn from summer to autumn invites a slowing down, a call for restoration and more balance in day-to-day activities. For me, this has also included more solitude and more attention towards nourishment and healing.

Speaking of dreaming, though, I recently became inspired in a dream-like state to create a work where my body was made up of the different landscapes that inform my ancestral lineage(s?)/ ethnicities. In order to begin making this idea manifest, I started experimenting with the app Procreate on my tablet (still kicking after 7 years, woot!)

The process yielded amazing fruit, and I shared these recently on Notes. I think these two are my favourites.

I love creating work that combines something surreal or otherworldly with the everyday and mundane. (Just as I can appreciate combining other kinds of “opposites” — high/low-brow culture and so on.)

I believe these “pictorial experiments” must be inspired by Ana Mendieta’s works, perhaps prompted by reading Sophie Strand’s recent newsletter on the body and ancestry, which uses work by Mendieta as accompaniment.

I’m going to pop a couple more Procreate experiments behind a paywall at the end; but, know that I appreciate you all! I have been making hybrid poemthingys… poem-paintings or digital explosions if you will, as well as just general noodling/ doodling.

Also, once I finish making copies of my zine/mini-chapbook and set all the necessary things up for distribution, I will be posting a complimentary one to those of you who so generously pay me every month to keep writing. Think of it as a seasonal gift, a treat for Yuletide/ High Holidays/ Christmas.

Hello dear readers! If you’re new here, I’m Angelica, I’m an artist (in all senses of the word), and I use this newsletter to tell you about things I’ve done, or am doing, which may include artwork and art-adjacent activities.

With that said…

I’ve just passed 150 subscribers!!!

While I don’t think metrics are particularly important, I can’t deny that this makes me happy. I have treated my art/ music/ writing practice as a somewhat clandestine or at least *private* activity for several years now, and I’m glad to be opening up access to my work (& world) slowly but surely.

Thank you for being here on this journey with me, whether it’s been a while, or you’re brand new. I’m not sure where it’s going, if anywhere… perhaps we’re just grooving in one place, watching the world turn~

As well as doing a little celebratory dance, my (other) reason for writing to you today is quite simple: I am happily sharing an article written about my work via !! It came out the other day and the response has already been really, really lovely.

The two oil paintings are from around 2021, so more or less lockdown times, and the painting-poem has a slightly more fluid and capacious date — I wrote the poem almost 10 years ago and dug it out of the archives to transform it into a “picture” very recently.

I hope you enjoy reading/ looking. There is also an option to listen if that’s more accessible for you.

In other news, I’ve been reconnecting to myself and to nature through some lovely woodland walks, crunching leaves under my feet that have already fallen and admiring the ones still hanging on as they shimmer in the breeze; orange, yellow… golden.

Walking clears my mind, helping me to put away things that I am done with and open up things I want to explore anew. It helps to connect the dots that seem oh so disparate. It’s good exercise, too!

I actually held a three-part workshop on walking and drawing last year, and it was received very well.

On a separate note, it’s been great to see creators on this platform with similar thoughts to myself, writing about technology, screen time, and so on. I think it should be more usual to discuss the detrimental effects of the Internet, of constant scrolling, of our phones being appendages, even if it is discussed online (!)

Reading one piece by on stretching our intellectual capacities to shore against brain rot and (a particular kind of) burnout has inspired me to pick up French and Japanese again. I may share updates on here!! I won’t lie, I’m a little intimidated by the three writing systems in Japanese and have only learnt some hiragana characters so far…

We’ll see how it goes. Perhaps writing about it here holds me somewhat accountable ;)

Even though I aspire to give off a mysterious and chic (albeit possibly avoidant?!?!?!?) vibe, I do appreciate the connections that can be made using the video format… I actually got the idea to film myself from a brilliant Substack called — it’s got a huge following so doesn’t really need little old me to plug it but I wanted to mention it anyway in the spirit of sharing and reciprocity. Also, everyone leave Instagram. Now. Just do it.

In the spirit of filmmaking and sharing videos, I’ve decided today that alongside re-introducing myself, I’m going to weave in some old things I made YEARS ago in a similar format… (moving image). Hence the title: “VIDS!”

Side-note: if you’re new here, I like to free-associate and weave in things that may seem random in that they only make sense to me; but, I hope that the thread is at least somewhat visible to all of you!

I’ve also added “CREATIVE CHAOS” to my newsletter’s about feature. I currently feel that at the core of multi-disciplinary art-making is an element of “controlled chaos”, which can seem difficult to wield yet fruitful if you can contain it.

So!

Here are some old movies (“short experimental films”) I’ve dug up that I made at (or just after) uni while studying English literature and dreaming of being back at art school. I remember when I made (some of) them I thought… how sick would it be to do the visuals AND the music??!??!?!.

And, well, that’s what I’m currently working on! Back then I didn’t have the bandwidth to care about copyright; but, this time round I’m making a music video with all original content. Sometimes you just gotta create something to make sense of life and damn the consequences! (Although IDK about Substack’s copyrighting system sooo…)

There are 7 in total that I made. I’ll pop 2 more at the bottom of this newsletter for ppl that support me with payment <3. The other 2 need some light editing… I showed all 7 at CASA NUEVE in Cholula, Mexico, in a cute little cinema, preceded by a performance of mine called ‘[triangle]’. This was back in 2019! Pre-covid times, another world entirely!!!
