I’ve been amassing a Fall edit which I will share in the next week or two but it first felt important to share the layers underneath it all - aka the pieces that everything else can get built on top of.

But, and this is very important! This is not a capsule wardrobe.

As women, shopping is kind of our thing. For men, it’s (mostly) an errand. For us, it’s an art. A dance, if you will? 90% of the time I’m shopping for inspiration, not just to fill a gap. Which is why the concept of the “capsule wardrobe” has always made me cringe because hellooo girls - we’re so much more multi-dimensional than this. Put simply, something becomes an essential based on my unique lifestyle which at this point is school drop-off, working from home and the occasional dinner worth putting bronzer on for. For someone who works in an office 5 days a week or has older kids, your essentials are going to vary from this list. Maybe not drastically, but it will certainly be different.

Having what is essential to you is always going to be the fastest route to feeling like...you! Hopefully this is something we can all get behind.

So - here are my 18 pieces. In my eyes, there are places to splurge (outerwear) and places to save (white tops). That being said, I always consider quality, cut and fit above all else. A cheap white tee that fits poorly and makes you feel self-consious does not an essential make.

Essentials: The Edit

In an amazing turn (?) of events over the last year, moms like myself are on this platform to create community and inspire others. I’m thrilled! I’m also, honestly, a bit overwhelmed by the amount of content out there these days. I truly feel like there is space for everyone and yet I do think it’s very hard to stay true to you with so much noise in the periphery. As a super visual person, I find myself following the shiny thing until I’m 5 clicks in - layers deep on Instagram, traipsing through the Swedish countryside with a stunning 27 year old and her cherub newborn.

The last 2 months off have reminded me (as did this brilliant podcast with Cou Cou Intimates founder Rose Colcord) that cutting the noise, following your intuition, and being disciplined is ultimately what creates value. The kind of value that can’t be replicated because only you can create it.

I’ve been thinking about this plenty and have been deep in creative mode on some personal projects that I’m really excited to share down the line. But, for now, I want to revisit what Blue Jean Baby provides in terms of value. Obviously, this Substack is a creative outlet for me and sure, Substack should be fun, but providing value is what anchors me. And honestly, what began as something inspiring has me feeling a bit like I’m one of many rats running in pack, which I do not enjoy.

One thing I’m confident of though is that my Mom Muse articles are here to stay. I will continue to tweak as I go but I love learning from the women I interview and on the back end of things, I can see you all do too.

So, as I continue to fine-tune BJB’S pov, I thought I’d share the three Substacks that are providing me the most value. I’d love to hear what your top 3 are :)

Why? Easy, elegant fashion in a digestible format with contemporary price points.

Why? She is not trying to impress anyone and that comes across so beautifully in everything she writes, especially her notes.

Why? Financial health but as it relates to fashion and consumption.

What I Wrote About This Summer:

They are the pieces that feel flowy yet sturdy, that have a certain ease to them where I don’t need to think too much about what I’m going to pair them with because they’re effectively a non-boring neutral.

Mainly though, it seems like everything I want to wear is either blue, white or striped:

Admittedly I was skeptical of Coco & Eve because I’m a branding snob and I really don’t like their branding.. BUT this was hands-down the best self-tanner I’ve ever used and trust me when I say I have tried my fair share. The applicator mitt is amazing.

How many kids do you have and where do you live?
Three kids — 6, 4, and 2. We live in Toronto.

What do you do professionally?
I have different answers depending on who’s asking and how much time I have. The broad answer is that I’m a stylist. More specifically, I act as a sort of style therapist, doing FaceTime sessions with women all over the world. I also work with brands and write a newsletter on Substack.

What does your morning routine look like? What are you wearing to drop-off?
This looks different every day, but on a good day I wake up around 6. I wash my face and get myself mostly ready so that if everything goes sideways later, I can do 20 seconds of makeup and still feel human. Then I do a 20-minute workout. BUILD is the best, by the way — a friend in Toronto started it, and it’s the only workout I do now. Weights are incredibly important.

I’ll get dressed in what I call phase one: jeans and a T-shirt, one minute of makeup, and then head to the kitchen to pack lunches and make breakfast. My husband usually takes the older kids to school, and once my nanny arrives (God bless her — I couldn’t do anything or work without her), I go back upstairs and actually get dressed for the day.

It’s very easy for that getting-ready time to disappear, which is why I like having a simple outfit on from the start. If the day gets away from me, I don’t feel like a complete mess.

What kind of support system do you have in motherhood?
So much, thankfully. My nanny, of course. My husband and I both have incredible families who live close by. Our parents are endlessly helpful. I have three brothers nearby and amazing sisters-in-law who are always willing to jump in when we need help.

Just last week, I had to call my brother in the middle of the night when my youngest was sick and we needed to take her to the hospital to have her breathing checked. Beyond that, I have the greatest friends in the world who would do anything for me or my kids.

So to sum it up: I have all the support in the world, and I never take that for granted.

Do you feel motherhood made you more or less experimental with fashion?
Definitely more, but it starts with less.

Looking back at how I felt after my first was born, I have never felt less like myself. It was also the beginning of COVID, but even beyond that, when you don’t feel like yourself, fashion is often the first thing to leave.

Then something shifts. Having kids forces you to figure out what makes you feel like yourself again, and for me that became a priority. Through that process I’ve become more confident, more clear on who I am, and ultimately more experimental. I know my comfort zone so well now that I know exactly how to push beyond it while still feeling like me.

What does feeling “put together” look like for you these days?
Honestly, not much. I just need to be wearing something I chose to wear. Even if it’s sweatpants and a T-shirt, it needs to feel intentional rather than like I’ve given up. Add filled-in eyebrows, a little blush, and some lip color, and I’m good.

Where do you find style inspiration?
Everywhere. The other week I was driving and saw a girl get off the bus wearing a sequin crop top with sweatpants. It inspired me.

What category in your closet is the most over-populated? What category is lacking?
Shoes. I could wear the same outfit every day, but if I change my shoes, it feels completely different.

As for what’s lacking? Honestly, nothing. I love my closet.

How has where you live shaped your style?
I love this question because I’ve never really thought about it.

When I was in university, I studied abroad in the UK for a semester. I’d always loved style, but living there gave me permission to be more experimental. I had more opportunities to get dressed, more reasons to wear things I never would have worn at home, and access to all these incredible stores we didn’t have in Toronto.

I’ve always been drawn to that, actually. I grew up visiting family in Montreal and one of my favourite parts was going shopping because there were stores we didn’t have at home. Looking back, it’s funny that even as a little kid I was so fascinated by that idea—that different places had different stores, different clothes, different ways of dressing. I think I was paying attention to style long before I realized I was.

That feeling definitely followed me to the UK and has stayed with me ever since. It made me more curious, more experimental, and more willing to see getting dressed as a form of exploration.

Your favorite shoes and bag right now?
I have a lot of favorites, but my most-worn right now are my vintage canvas Gucci tote and my Jamie Haller black flip-flops.

What are you wearing for a Sunday morning family outing?
It’s not too hot here yet, so for the last few weekends I’ve basically been wearing the same thing: a black linen T-shirt, my purple checked High Sport pants from last year, black flip-flops, and my Gucci tote.

What are the 3 items you’re coveting for summer?
Hard question, because I don’t spend much time thinking about what I’m missing. But three things I can’t stop thinking about:

These Christen mules my friend bought that I absolutely love. I refuse to buy the same pair because we’re together all the time and I want them to stay her thing, but every time I get dressed I think, “See? This is why I need those shoes.”

The Saint Laurent Y Tote, which I’ve been thinking about since last summer and may finally get in black for fall.

And a Sophie Bille Brahe ring I tried on in Paris last November and still haven’t forgotten.

What’s the most honest thing you’d say about the relationship between style and motherhood?

I think a lot of people assume being a good mom means putting yourself last. But the five minutes I spend upstairs getting dressed while my husband is downstairs trying to keep three kids alive is not selfish. It’s maintenance.

Those five minutes help me feel like myself. And when I feel like myself, I’m more patient, more present, and more capable of taking on whatever the day throws at me.

I am a better mom when I care about what I’m wearing.

Sum up motherhood in 3 words.
Loud. Humbling. Chaotic. (can you tell I have three young kids?)

On a more personal note, I am a huge proponent of working with a functional doctor not just as a mom but as a woman. In my opinion the medical system in North America has no idea wtf to do with us and the only way to truly get answers is to look under the hood. I loved ’s recent piece on how seeing a functional doctor has changed her life and I wanted to share it here in case any of my readers are functional health curious. Personally, I have worked with Parsley Health in the past and more recently with Lauren Steiner (OSOA Nutrition), both of which I’ve recommended to friends & family members.

Lastly, I’ve been deleting Instagram off my phone during the weekend and it’s kind of been life-changing. That is all!

Pilates is a wonderful workout because 1. you get to lay down and 2. you can carry on with the rest of your day without having to shower after a class. And, if I’m being honest I’m probably marinating in my workout clothes for the rest of the day which poses a problem because most of my workout clothes are from 7 years ago when I actually cared.

How many kids do you have and where do you live?

I have two girls — Grace (turning 5 in June) and Hazel who just turned 1 in early May. We live in East Bay California.

What do you do professionally?

I view myself as an editor. Since 2016, I’ve run my blog full-time—writing, sourcing, and sharing beautiful things, interiors, ideas, and parts of life. In the last year or so, I created a newsletter on Substack called 'As of Late' to stay in touch with my close-knit readers.

What does your morning routine look like? What are you wearing to drop off?

The phases and routine are perpetually changing the first year with a baby, especially the first 8 months. I’ve recently met the moment where we can be much more intentional again. On an ideal morning I wake at 5am to either journal (I am a morning pages girl), meditate, or a stretch/pilates flow. I’ve always been a morning person but an hour earlier to myself leaves me in ebullient form!

I am either in workout clothing and heading to pilates or a nature hike after drop off — or (as of late) jeans, tee, favorite mesh flats, and a light jacket of choice.

What kind of support system do you have in motherhood?

Girlfriends! I’m so lucky to have the women in my life who I am closest to. A few had kids before me which was so helpful once I had my own to ask for guidance. And a couple of my friends and I had babies around the same time, which was equally comforting.

Majority of our friend’s have parents living in short driving distance — my husband, Matt, and I always talk about how incredibly nice that must be! “It takes a village” continues to click. Now that Hazel is at a much easier age, I’m currently on a mission to acquire an army of babysitters. If you know anyone :)

Do you feel motherhood has made you more or less experimental with fashion?

I can lean into both directions!

More — learning to find ways to integrate some of my more elevated things into everyday life. By pairing them with more simple pieces to ground.

Less — Over the years, I’ve continued to find certainty in wanting less stuff. Focus on the reliable, special, heirloom-worthy pieces. I think my style has remained the same — but the style/mom-ing overlap is that over the years, I’ve been motivated to hone in on what I truly love... what is fluff, what is essential. In many areas of life, but most definitely my closet and what I collect!

What does feeling “put together” look like for you these days?

Feeling un-fussed and confident.

A good hair day (whether by chance or the effort to make it happen), hydrated skin, jeans you feel great in, adorning meaningful jewelry, a spritz of your favorite perfume. The act of taking care of yourself and being thoughtful with how you and your energy show up in the world.

Where do you find style inspiration?

Designers I admire, Pinterest, old Porter Magazines (I reference my collection often), traveling (we paused on far-flung trips since having kids, I look forward to this with our ladies in the near future!).

Bags and jackets are my weakness and breathe life into my wardrobe. I have spent the last decade thoughtfully collecting and have a good pulse on what gaps are in my closet and I often resolve them. I don’t think I am lacking anything, really, maybe heels? I don’t wear them much, though!

Do you dress differently in the city versus the suburbs and how has where you live shaped your style?

Not really for the most part, as San Francisco is quite casual! I had more social events and occasions to get dressed up in the city, though, which I miss. It’s ideal motivation to book the trip, plan a party (and excuse for the nice dress), etc. I love our frequent wine country escapes, I bring my A-game every time!

Lately gravitating to my Mansur Gavriel mesh ballerinas and my Hermes Picotin!

What are you wearing for a Sunday morning family outing?

Currently very into my balloon cotton pants with a slim fitted tank and simple sandals. I learned that I love this style pant for my daughter, Grace. It inspired me to give a pair a whirl, too. Another point for motherhood making me more experimental!

What’s the most honest thing you’d say about the relationship between style and motherhood?

You don’t have to downplay your style by limiting what you wear in the name of motherhood. I believe this deeply with both closet and home. Have a trusty stain spray on hand (I swear by this) and maybe just save your silk and suede pieces for date nights with your partner and friend catch-ups when they’re very young. Other than that — you gotta live a little and enjoy the pieces that make you happy and feel great.

... I spill more on myself than my kids do honestly...

Anyway, here is an edit of everything I’m into this month. I broke it out into two sections this time because I had too many things on my mind and visually there’s really two directions here - light & playful / black & navy.

First:

Second:

the kallmeyer top i cannot seem to get my mind off of, and similarly this cotton dress, donni pop cargo pant - lots of sizes in this new navy color, black tunic by Claudent (again), fringe silk top for nights out, haven’t seen many people talking about these Reformation pants and I’m not sure why, summer hair in a bottle from the genius that is , cutie hoodie shirt that feels very 90’s reminiscent and a snap tank, deiji studios top and how cute with these board shorts, zara home bikini - do NOT sleep on zara home for clothing, deiji cotton pants with a slight crop for summer, cotton windbreaker jacket, the most beautiful color of blush (shade is garconne), and beaded silk bathing suit cover up dress

Other things I’m into:

• I consider to be one of the great voices of my generation and have found myself turning my Bravo shows off early to read her new memoir Famesick which is… saying something.

• I’m not new to fangirling over but I am a recent follower of hers on Substack, which has been a treat. Her note on how 2 things can be true re: your husband asking what you want to do for Mother’s day while also how lucky you are to have someone who wants to make you happy made me lol. And on that note, we used Resort Pass to book a hotel pool afternoon for us and the kids in Sonoma - highly recommend if you just can’t justify an overnight at a nice hotel with kids (me currently)

• wrote a great piece on the tote bag cool moms in Paris carry (which I also included in my Baby Shower Edit - read Monica’s article here)

• The way I audibly gasped at this look. I have NO business buying this but dear god someone needs to. Would be soo pretty for a baby shower, bridal shower, wedding guest or anything along those lines. And, the pants are elastic waist so a versatile separate (and the top would be so cute with jeans as a non-pregnant person) - as I’ve said before, justifying purchases is an art I do not take lightly.

I read an article about counterfeit beauty products purchased on Amazon via Meika Hollender that shook me to my core . Admittedly, I become more reliant on my Prime membership with every passing year, but this sh*t scared me straight. Since finding everything you need at CVS is a like a treasure hunt with no happy ending, I’m back to Sephora - but online because I’m not a tween or a tween mom, yet (TG, I am not ready). To replace my *absolutely *counterfeit Almay Oil-Free Makeup Remover pads that I’ve used since I was 16, I got these Sofie Pavitt Cleansing Pads and I love everything about them.

I recently heard Allison Bornstein talk about how since having a baby she’s been investing more in pieces that feel really special and less “tried and true” basics. I LOVE this way of thinking because it speaks to the functionality we need from our clothes. I’m taking what Allison said to heart and setting my RealReal searches appropriately.

I have always been a Reformation fan and I feel like their selection gets better and better with time. In my cart currently is this fitted button down shirt and the matching shorts, though I also love them in white, & this rollneck sweater tee.

I am deeply entrenched in the Summer House drama and have a deep-seated belief that Instagram’s algorithm disproportionately targets us millennial moms because of who raised us:

Last summer I was in the throes of postpartum - no sleep, no time and navigating the identity shift that came with being a mom of 2 and girl mom for the first time if I’m being honest. My favorite jean shorts were TIGHT and not appropriate and I basically wore the same black caftan everyday.

In an attempt to organize myself this time around I’ve been manically saving anything I come across that I feels like something I will actually wear this summer, ie: taking my 4 year old to swim lessons everyday for 6 weeks in the blazing heat and NOT what I would wear if my husband would just listen to me and book us a villa in Marbella.

This weeks post is a bit more niche than just 90 degree weather because I wanted to narrow in specifically on pool/beach wear. If you’re set in this department, honestly massive congrats to you because you probably have your sh*t together in way I never will. For me, this is a category that is an afterthought of my afterthoughts and I feel strapped for an outfit every single time I hear the world “pool party.”

Still Here is launching their Spring/Summer ‘26 collection next Thursday (3/26) and I’ve been dying (evidence below) to get my hands on their nylon ever since I saw Ilana Torbiner wearing it. Nylon is so versatile and not as wrinkly as linen (not hating on linen, just a call out) and I feel like I would wear soo much?

Suzie Kondo Spring/Summer ‘26 chapter 2 is available this Saturday (3/21) at 8am EST. I have been fed many, many ads from them and am hoping to find more clothing for extreme heat.

Donni released Spring Part 1 and I’m just going to say that I have a love/hate relationship with their styling. I LOVE their styling but they style new pieces with future pieces and I’m a bit like, k but I want to buy this whole entire outfit now?? Obvi these women know what they’re doing (&& it’s working wonders). Love all of these looks, but most importantly the colorrrrrrs.

Snagged these shoes on The Real Real and feel reaaally good about it! They’re in way better shape than what was shown. I’m someone who wears heels rarely and ruins them immediately so I prefer to buy them second-hand.

When it’s a Tuesday at 5pm and a cocktail feels aggressive I’m reaching for this non-alc spritz in the blood orange flavor. So refreshing and feels very much like a cocktail. Not too sugary and feels very summertime.

What’s felt surprising is how hard it’s been to find an outfit that I feel genuinely excited to wear? That feels baby shower appropriate but still me. As someone who tends to skew neutral, black feels too dreary in this context. I went down quite a rabbit hole and thought I’d share a big round up with you all of the options I found (and trust me when I say, I scoured) that got me feeling excited.

Also included are some really special gift ideas, should you wish to veer from the registry. My general opinion is always follow the registry, because it’s truly so much work for the pending mom to put together that it’s kind of annoying when people disregard, but if you want to add a really special touch for someone extra close to you, I think the items below are all wonderful!

On a personal note, I just have to say how incredibly grateful I am for all the positive feedback I’ve received since launching this Substack a few months ago. 1. How many kids do you have (& how old) and where do you live?
Two: my son Max (3.5) and daughter Eddie (1.5). We’re a year into life on the West Coast in Marin after a decade in NYC.

2. What do you do professionally?
I lead sales teams at a tech company.

3. What is your morning routine? What are you wearing to drop off?
“Routine” is generous. I wake up ~30 minutes before the kids for a quiet moment: shower, stretch (I love MWH), make smoothies, throw on an outfit. Most weekdays I’m in trousers or vintage Levi’s, loafers or boots, and a sweater or blazer. On WFH days, it’s a knit, flowy pants, and ballet flats, flip flops, or sneakers. Weekends are slower: coffee, pancakes, a family walk. Usually in linen or cozy layers.

4. What does your support system look like?
Being on the West Coast means we’re far from family in Canada, which is tough. The kids are in daycare/preschool, and we rely on a few trusted babysitters and close friends. Day-to-day, it’s very much us. When we’re with family, we soak it up.

5. Do you feel motherhood made you more or less experimental with fashion?
Somehow both. I’m more intentional now: time is precious, so I’ve built a wardrobe of quality basics and vintage pieces I can grab without overthinking - I love Wasteland and 10ft Single by Stella Dallas. If it doesn’t feel like me, I don’t force it. Having a daughter has surprised me. I’ve always gravitated toward masculine silhouettes and ease, but dressing Eddie has pulled me toward softer colors and textures. Sometimes I surprise myself with what I’m excited to put her in, and it’s made me more willing to test those things on myself too.

6. What does feeling “put together” look like for you these days?
Honestly? Skincare done, hair brushed or pulled back, a great coat - that’s enough!

7. Where do you find inspiration for everyday style?
All of my environments. A blend of my New York and California lives - the clean, tailored minimalism of NYC moms softened with West Coast ease. Travel inspires me too; European women are effortlessly chic. I’m drawn to those who dress with self-assurance, not for an audience. Instagram, in moderation, is great for ideas.

8. Where/when do you feel most authentically you when it comes to getting dressed?
On rare holidays somewhere warm and beachy, where getting dressed means a loose linen number, flip flops, maybe a head scarf…that’s my simplest self. At home, I love fall daytime dressing: layers, a great jacket, comfort. Daywear over dressing up any night.

9. How do you keep track of your shopping list and/or identify gaps in your wardrobe?
It all lives in my head. Notes lists get lost among a million others. If I can’t stop thinking about something, or I’m constantly reaching for a piece that isn’t there, that’s when I know. Vintage shopping is usually impulse. The thrill!

10. Are there pieces you retired because of motherhood? And ones you can’t live without now?
Biggest unlock: sizing up my denim after having my son. Letting go of “pre-baby” sizes made dressing feel ten times better. Dry-clean-only? Only for true occasions. I still wear a lot of white like a crazy person. Non-negotiables: structured basics, washable knits, trousers or great jeans, and bags that fit snacks, toys, and extra layers.

11. Your most worn shoe and bag?
Salomon XT4 sneakers, run into the ground (figuratively, I’m not a runner!). Bag-wise: large Prada leather tote on weekdays, Prada ReNylon belt bag on weekends.

12. What’s the most honest thing you’d say about the relationship between style and motherhood?
Motherhood is about letting go, including how you dress. Kids spill, tug, stain. Releasing control actually clarifies your style. You care less about others’ opinions and more about what feels true. I’m less precious with nicer pieces now. If I love it, I wear it. Life’s too short to save the good stuff.

13. Where do you love to shop / what brands do you love for yourself? And for your kids?
Toteme, Donni, The Frankie Shop, Kallmeyer, Doen, SIR, Cos, La Ligne. Lately, J.Crew and Gap have had great pieces. Most of my outerwear is vintage, and I have a serious RealReal addiction.

14. If you had to sum up motherhood in 3 words…
Expansive, humbling, hilarious.

TOY BINS WITH LIDS
Every mom looking for a good laugh should pull up their baby registry and hold it up to their current toy situ. Neutrals be gone - my house is full of colorful toys but that doesn’t mean I need to stare at them once my kids are asleep. The satisfaction I get when the lid goes down at 7pm and the toys disappear from my sight is unparalleled. Night night. Also, I personally own half of these and can attest to their greatness.

CROWN AFFAIR
I recently heard Dianna Cohen on a podcast describing her brand Crown Affair as the “no-makeup makeup for hair,” and I love it so much. Styling is an afterthought for me and air drying my hair is a reality of life right now. The texturizing ary dry mousse and hair oil are the only 2 products I use like ever - here’s a sad girl photo of me attempting to capture Dianna’s brilliance.

SERVING DINNER IN TUPPERWARE
Instead of plating veggie sides separately, I put them straight from the oven into glass food storage containers. Leftovers go directly into the fridge and the deplatting step is skipped entirely. I just bought this colorful Pyrex set from Amazon and love it so much I’m gifting it to various family members next.

A GOOD HANDYMAN
I consider myself handy, but my husband, not so much. So instead of serving him divorce papers every Saturday morning over an incorrectly hung piece of art, I’ve enlisted the help of a wonderful handyman. While he works we head out to spend quality family time at the nearest coffee shop which is what weekends are meant for. My next project is going to be installing dimmers on all our lights so that come 630pm it’s zen time.

PUTTING MY TO-DO LIST IN MY CALENDAR
File this under “aesthetic life hack” for anyone who loves a color-coded Google Calendar - hi, it’s me. One of the best takeaways from working with my friend and coach Emma Lloyd was not just writing down a to-do list, but actually putting each task into my calendar - assigning them a category (personal, errand, work, etc) and an estimated amount of time. PSA this is not my personal calendar - found on Cosmos - another life hack for Pinterest lovers (or design lovers) looking for elevated mood images.

PINTEREST OUTFIT FINDER
“Shop the Look” on Pinterest is the definition of an aesthetic life hack. Click a photo you like, and it pulls up items that match what’s in the picture. Brain off, credit card - very much on.

BIG COATS
Finally, this isn’t giving up, it’s practical! A good coat is basically the outfit for the next few months. Invest and/or save up for next season, it’s worth it. I spoke to this in one of my recent posts about NYC moms and can expand on this greatly as coats are essentially my hobby - let me know if you’re interested!!

But then I looked at the stats: it rains 16% of the year in the Bay Area, and up to 33% in NYC and Paris… and don’t even get me started on Canada… guys, this is not OK!!

Addressing the whole rain wardrobe has long been on my to-do list and as I stare down the barrel of what could be a very wet California “winter,” it feels more than apropos to tackle this now.

Head coverage

Functionally speaking an umbrella can also do this, but aesthetically speaking a rain hat is more of a moment. A cute bucket hat works well, consider one that ties for super windy days, or a scarf, go wool for colder weather and look for a triangle shape. Also a hoodie sweatshirt is super cute with a baseball cap.

Trench-ish Outerwear

I know I shared some trenches already in my last post, but it really is the best option for rain. Water-resistant trenches or a waxed material will keep you warmest but for a true raincoat… this feels like a major gap in the market with RAINS have the best options.

Waterproof/water-resistant footwear

I’ve been seeing Hunter boots everywhere which I know are a classic but also remind me a lot of 2009 and I don’t know how I feel about it. Either way, a waterproof shoe is the most essential rain preparedness purchase and buy a pair you love because they’ll likely be your only pair. Truly, do you know anyone that has more than one pair of rainboots? Spend the extra $$ on these, if anywhere!

What is it about them that makes them look cooler than everyone else, even when in sweatpants? Well, here’s my analysis:

The Great Outdoors

Let’s give credit where credit is due, NYC moms are outdoorsy AF. They walk everywhere and while dressing for a day of walking can be tricky, it somehow feels more authentic than dressing for a quick drive a la California living.

Black

I know everyone’s swearing they’re “into color” right now, but IDGAF because NYC moms know that if you don’t know what to wear, just wear black. Black pants, black sweater, black boots, black sunglasses and just like that you’re more put-together than 99% of people. And hey, maybe someone will even ask you if you used to live in New York.

Leather

A Big Ass Coat

I know it feels harder but the truth is that it takes just as much effort to put on an ugly coat as it does to put on a nice one. A good “BAC” can be a big investment but this is the piece that sees you through pre-baby, pregnancy, postpartum, and back again. New York moms do this well.

One Nice Thing

It’s deceptively simple, and something New York moms do instinctively. Pick one standout piece, an accessory (bag, shoe, ring etc.) or outerwear (see above) and let it carry your outfit.

This is is more niche but J.Law aka cool-mom street style guru does this all the time and you better believe I’ve found myself googling random fish shacks in Long Island due to her. Buying a hat, hoodie or other wearables from your favorite 80’s singer to your local deli is a chill, low-effort thing that feels personal and cooler than a vintage knockoff from a popular brand.

3. What is your morning routine? What are you wearing to drop off?

The morning is usually a bit of scramble (the fun kind!) especially now both kids are in school (they start ‘em young in France, which is honestly great for them and for us working moms!) So I’ll flop out of bed, make them breakfast and help them get dressed (quite a process for my daughter), then dress myself in five seconds flat. On mornings when my husband drops them off, I have more time to think about what I want to wear, so I’ll put more thought into what I’m wearing.

Here’s a typical photo of me when I just grab something almost blind… anything weather appropriate for drop off. This is why it is now of the *utmost* importance that I love and want to wear everything in my wardrobe any day of the week. I did a huge closet clearout recently and haven’t regretted it for a second.

4. What does your support system look like?

We are incredibly lucky to have both a nanny (as in, the kids have a nanny, not me, I wish) and my in-laws who live in the neighbourhood and help take care of the kids on weekends. I feel it’s important to say this publicly… to avoid the “doing it all/making it look easy” trope. I have help which I work hard to pay for, and yeah, we got super lucky in the grandparents department. The kids love hanging with them too, of course.

5. Do you feel motherhood made you more or less experimental with fashion?

Weirdly, both! More experimental in that my daughter’s passionate approach to dressing has given my own inspiration a new lease of life. Less in that I simply have less time to think of my own envelope-pushing styling ideas. But hey, maybe this is liberating in its own way. No time to overthink it!

6. What does feeling “put together” look like for you these days?

Any outfit where I wouldn’t be embarrassed running into anyone (Brad Pitt, my kid’s teacher, an ex, a super-stylish Parisian friend, Miranda Priestly.) Can be very basic. It’s just got to make sense on me.

7. Where do you find inspiration for your everyday style?

I do a lot of people watching both IRL in Paris and on the internet. I also obsess over movies old (70s, 90s). And I also try to find inspo in my own closet; to see my pieces through fresh eyes each time I enter it.

8. Where/when do you feel most authentically you when it comes to getting dressed?

Oh, I always do. My style is nothing to write home about. I’m not Leandra Medine (whose style I absolutely love by the way). Most days, I’m not setting new trends and that’s ok with me. I’m maybe just nodding to a trend, if that. Though I will say that it’s extremely rare I look back on an outfit I wore, even a decade ago, and think wtf. I guess I have had similar style my entire adult life, and a pretty built-in radar of what is going to work on me and what isn’t.

9. How do you keep track of your shopping list and/or identify gaps in your wardrobe?

Again with what I feel is important transparency: I am very lucky to be sent a lot of collections of designers I love to review visually/ pick something from. So I kind of filter through what I’m going to need or just really want for the changing seasons in my head ahead of time and bear in mind what to look out for in brands’ lookbooks. I do occasionally buy vintage though, which is exhilarating.

10. Are there pieces you retired because of motherhood? And ones you can’t live without now?

Nope. Not consciously anyway. I just maybe wear less white on the weekend!

12. What’s the most honest thing you’d say about the relationship between style and motherhood?

There is absolutely no reason your style should go out the window. Narrow it down. Think about who you are as a person and how you want to reflect that to the outside world. Give everything else to charity or sell it. Trust me it’s a great feeling! Make it easy to do the grab anything in your closet thing I described earlier, when you’re stressed or rushed or exhausted. Motherhood means life experience, experience means growing, growing means refining your taste based on everything you’ve seen: lived experience. In short: many of the most stylish women I’ve ever met are grandmothers!

1. The underbelly
Not for the faint of heart but take an honest look at your underwear, socks, and bras. Check for stains, rips, or just general sadness and make a list of what needs replacing - then actually replace it. Extra points for organizing this drawer and yes, you deserve new socks too.

I firmly believe anyone who hangs out at home in jeans is a psychopath (my husband, first in line). I want to be comfortable when I’m home but also not feel like a slob. Enter: the house shoe, an elevated slipper that says “I woke up 4 hours ago.”

4. Sleep, the ultimate refresh
A perfect excuse to buy new pajamas, upgrade to a proper alarm clock and splurge on a red light lamp. Whatever the small investment is that helps you get a better sleep, it’s totally, 100% worth it.

With school back in session, the reality of drop-off has returned and I wholeheartedly believe this is the hardest activity to get dressed for, possibly ever. My heart is telling me to swan dive into a pool of cable knits and shades of brown but my head is reminding me that September is basically still summer. It’s transitional weather at its most cruel. What exactly is the outfit for 65° at 8 a.m. and 85° at 2 p.m.?

Drop off scenarios (there is of course more than this, but for the purpose of this post):

• From drop off to WFH - Our pre-pandemic selves never saw it coming. To me this is the hardest because there’s way too much grey area between DGAF and ‘elevated comfortable.’

• From drop off to AM Workout - If you’re working out after (or before) drop off, reality is you’re 99% sure to be in activewear. Remember when we used to get changed at the gym? Lol.

• Office - Honestly, congrats. Your job probably dictates your outfit and I’m jealous. This is so personal to your job and city so I’m not going to touch on it here, but if you have any requests, drop them in the chat and I can address!!

Think of this as a uniform that can be swapped and styled over and over again. Is this simple? Sure. But it’s a versatile foundation that can be easily personalized through accessories that are uniquely you. Just the button down shirt can be buttoned, unbuttoned, tucked in or loose, tied around waist or over the shoulders.

Again, this is not revolutionary but a solid foundation to play with. There’s a wide range of barn jackets out there but stick with a polished option if you want to feel put together. Suede or leather also works here - Courtney Grow introduced me to this really good Zara jacket that would work well here.

Let’s start with the hard and straight facts. There’s a valid reason why so many moms are out here in workout clothes 24/7. A weekend with small children is a 48 hour marathon that your pre-child self could never have imagined having the stamina for. And while I may not love this for us, I can’t argue with the fact that functionally workout gear can make a lot of sense during these times.

That being said - in an attempt to inspire you all (and myself because, guilty) - I’ve put together three looks for some weekend activities that we all know and love. Consider this your starter guide to feeling vaguely like a human who knows how to dress herself.
