God Chooses the Flawed

A GodCast Sermon

Grace and peace to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Brothers and sisters, open your Bibles with me today to a truth that runs like a scarlet thread through all of Scripture: God does not wait for perfect people. He chooses the broken, the stained, the ones with a past—and then He does something miraculous with them.

Look at the company Jesus kept. He didn’t recruit from the seminary honor roll. He walked along the shoreline and called rough fishermen who smelled of the catch. He sat down with Matthew the tax collector—an outsider, a collaborator with Rome, a man many of his own people despised. He chose Peter, the impulsive one who would later deny Him three times with curses on his lips. He chose Thomas the doubter. He chose James and John, the “Sons of Thunder,” hot-tempered enough to want to call down fire on a village. And later, He took Saul of Tarsus—the violent persecutor who breathed threats and murder against the church—and turned him into the Apostle Paul.

These were not polished saints. They were flawed men. And Jesus still said, “Follow Me.”

Go further back. Moses murdered an Egyptian and fled into the desert as a fugitive. God still called him from the burning bush to lead a nation out of slavery. David—the man after God’s own heart—committed adultery with Bathsheba and arranged the death of her husband. Yet God still established his throne forever and brought the Messiah through his line. Rahab the prostitute hid the spies and found her name in the genealogy of Jesus. Jacob the deceiver became Israel. Abraham lied about his wife. The list goes on.

Scripture is not a museum of perfect people. It is a gallery of redeemed ones. As Paul would later write, “But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong… so that no one may boast before him” (1 Corinthians 1:27, 29).

Why? Because the power belongs to God, not to the vessel. The glory goes to the Potter, not the clay. When God uses a flawed person, it is not an endorsement of the flaws—it is a demonstration of grace. It shows that no past is beyond the reach of the blood of Jesus. It shows that transformation is possible. It shows that the same God who raised the dead can raise a man or woman from the wreckage of their own choices.

We live in a time when people love to dig up the past of public figures and declare them disqualified forever. Some look at a man like Donald Trump—imperfect, brash, with a history of personal failings—and say he cannot be used. Others look at Byron Donalds—who has openly spoken of youthful mistakes, arrests decades ago that were later resolved, and who has testified of giving his life to Christ—and say the same. “Too flawed. Too stained. We must reject him, even if it means handing victory to someone whose positions we oppose.”

But that is not the pattern of Scripture. God has always worked through imperfect instruments. The question is never “Has this person ever failed?” The question is “Has this person been changed? Is the fruit of repentance and new life present? Does the current direction of their life and work serve the good?”

None of this means we ignore character. None of this means we shrug at ongoing unrepentant sin. Scripture also says that leaders must be above reproach in the present (1 Timothy 3; Titus 1). Redemption does not erase accountability. But neither does a redeemed past permanently disqualify a person from being used by God or serving the public. If it did, most of the heroes of the faith would be sitting on the sidelines.

Jesus looked at Peter after the denial and still restored him: “Feed my sheep.” He looked at Paul after the Damascus road and still sent him to the Gentiles. He looks at us—every one of us with our private failures, our secret struggles, our public mistakes—and still calls us to Himself.

So let us be careful, brothers and sisters. Let us not become the older brother in the parable of the prodigal, standing outside the feast, angry that grace has been extended to someone we think is unworthy. The Father’s house has room for the returning son. The Kingdom has room for the flawed who have been washed.

If God could use a murderer, an adulterer, a tax collector, a denier, and a persecutor, then He can use imperfect men and women in our day as well. The same grace that saved them is available to every one of us. The same power that transformed them is still at work.

Therefore, examine your own heart first. Confess your own flaws. Receive the mercy of Christ afresh. And then, when you look at the leaders of our time—whether you agree with them or not—remember the pattern of the God who chooses the broken and makes them vessels for His purpose.

May we walk in that same grace. May we extend it. And may the Name of Jesus be glorified in vessels of clay.

Amen.

Help us to see people—including those in public life—through the lens of Your redeeming power rather than the lens of permanent condemnation. Guard our hearts from self-righteousness. Give wisdom to Your people as they discern and decide. And use even the flawed among us for Your glory and the good of others. In Jesus’ name. Amen

Yesterday, across several states—most notably Florida and Wyoming—Republican voters cast their ballots and selected candidates to carry the banner forward. We gather not to exalt a party, but to acknowledge that every authority under heaven is under the sovereign hand of God, and to ask the Lord to shape those who have prevailed according to His purposes.

Scripture reminds us:

“The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; he turns it wherever he will.” (Proverbs 21:1)

And again:

“When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people groan.” (Proverbs 29:2)

We give thanks for the candidates who prevailed—among them Byron Donalds as the Republican nominee for Governor of Florida, Ashley Moody as the Republican nominee for the special U.S. Senate seat in Florida, Harriet Hageman for U.S. Senate in Wyoming, Chuck Gray for the U.S. House in Wyoming, and Eric Barlow as the Republican nominee for Governor of Wyoming. We bless them in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

We pray they will not lean on their own understanding or the fleeting applause of men, but will seek the Lord’s will above every platform and every poll. May they be men and women after God’s own heart, who walk in the fear of the Lord rather than the fear of man.

We ask specifically that they would protect the unborn—the least of these for whom Christ died. Scripture declares:

“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” (Psalm 139:13-14)

And the Lord says through Jeremiah:

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you.” (Jeremiah 1:5)

May these candidates stand firm for the sanctity of every human life from conception, rejecting every statute and every policy that treats the child in the womb as disposable. May they work to restore legal protection for the unborn and to build a culture that cherishes rather than discards the image of God.

We further pray that they would labor to restore the constitutional protections secured by our founding fathers—protections rooted in the understanding that our rights come from the Creator, not from government. May they honor the Declaration’s affirmation of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as unalienable gifts of God. May they have the courage to identify and work for the repeal of statutes and regulations that exceed the limited powers delegated by the Constitution, that violate the separation of powers, or that trample the rights of the people and the states.

Lord, grant them wisdom to distinguish between the things that belong to Caesar and the things that belong to God. Give them the resolve of the apostles who said, “We must obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29), when human law contradicts the higher law of the Creator.

Now we must put aside the past. The primary season has ended. The time for internal contention over secondary differences is over. Scripture commands us:

“Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!” (Psalm 133:1)

And again:

“I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.” (1 Corinthians 1:10)

Stop the bickering. Lay down the grievances, the rivalries, and the minor points of preference that have divided us. Join together. Focus on the real enemy—the spiritual forces of evil that seek to destroy the unborn, to erode liberty, to undermine the constitutional order, and to oppose the purposes of God. Our struggle is not ultimately against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness (Ephesians 6:12).

Seek victory not for the glory of any candidate, any faction, or any party, but for the glory of God alone. Let every effort, every word, and every stand be offered as unto the Lord, that His name may be exalted and His righteousness advanced in the land.

May these nominees lead with that same spirit of unity. Guard them from pride, from corruption, and from the love of power for its own sake. Make them servants of the people under the authority of God. And for us, the people of God, grant discernment to support what is righteous, to speak truth in love, and to intercede without ceasing. Let us never confuse political victory with the advance of the Kingdom. The Kingdom comes not by the sword of the state, but by the Word of the cross and the power of the Spirit.

Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Go in the peace of Christ. Put aside the past. Stand together. Fight the real battle. And may the Lord cause His face to shine upon those who have been chosen, that they might walk in His ways for the good of this nation and the glory of His name.

A formal request for review has been delivered to Tallahassee. Scripture, the trial record, and a notice to every family that helps an aging or dying relative vote.

“The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him.”

On August 9 a formal request was delivered to Tallahassee asking Florida officials to examine the circumstances surrounding the COVID-related death of my father, Navy veteran Robert Henry Rivernider Sr., and the events that followed.

His vote-by-mail ballot was delivered to him on October 1, 2020. The return envelope was dated October 16 while he was still alive. He died on October 19. The envelope was postmarked October 23 and received by the Supervisor of Elections office on October 26. It was rejected. No vote was ever counted.

Nearly three years later a criminal prosecution was filed. At trial the State called only three witnesses. No witness testified from personal observation that I placed the envelope in the mail. The handwriting examiner said I “probably” wrote the disputed signature but did not make a conclusive identification. The physical ballot itself was removed from the exhibit before the jury deliberated. Even the prosecutor corrected himself in closing argument from calling it the “ballot in question” to the “envelope in question.”

Yet the public was repeatedly told that I had voted my dead father’s ballot.

“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.”

— Exodus 20:16

That public narrative has shaped how courts, officials, and the media describe me. I am asking that the actual evidence be examined: who first handled the envelope, what condition it was in at intake, when the “DECEASED” notation was placed on it, who possessed it after my father’s death, and who ultimately mailed it. I am also asking why the original investigative election witness was removed from the State’s witness list shortly before trial after defense counsel requested a deposition.

This request arrives as Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, joined by other state attorneys general, has issued investigative subpoenas examining potential harms and guidance from COVID-era governmental actions involving Dr. Anthony Fauci. I have asked that my family be considered for potential-victim or witness review in that ongoing inquiry. The submission does not presume that any individual has already been proven legally responsible for my father’s death.

This is also a public emergency notice.

Florida law allows limited, carefully defined assistance for voters who are blind, disabled, or unable to read or write, and it provides procedures for eligible voters in assisted-living and nursing-home facilities. Immediate family members may perform certain vote-by-mail functions permitted by statute. But the line between lawful help and a felony is not always clear to ordinary families.

What happened in my case shows why that clarity is urgent — especially in communities with large numbers of senior citizens. A ballot mailed to a living voter, a return envelope dated while he was still alive, an item later rejected so that no vote was ever counted, and no trial witness who saw the mailing — yet the public story became “he voted his dead father’s ballot,” and the consequences have been severe.

Families who in good faith try to help an elderly, seriously ill, or dying relative should not be left to guess about conduct that can carry felony consequences. I am asking Florida officials to provide clear, statute-based guidance so that people trying to do the right thing are not destroyed for it.

“Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.”

— Proverbs 31:8–9

My father can no longer speak. I am asking that the record of what happened to his election materials, and how that record was later described to the public, be examined carefully and truthfully.

“Justice is turned back, and righteousness stands far away; for truth has stumbled in the public squares, and uprightness cannot enter.”

— Isaiah 59:14

I cannot undo the years that have passed. But the public record can still be corrected. I am asking for an independent examination of what the jury actually heard and saw, and how an uncounted vote became a prosecution that has affected my freedom and my name.

“Vindicate me, O God, and defend my cause…”

Exodus 20:16 – “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.”

Proverbs 19:5 – “A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who breathes out lies will not escape.”

Proverbs 25:18 – “A man who bears false witness against his neighbor is like a war club, or a sword, or a sharp arrow.”

Brothers and sisters, we live in a time when a single lie can destroy a life faster than almost any other weapon. Just this week we watched a political opponent publicly accuse Florida gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds of being under federal investigation for sex trafficking. The Department of Justice immediately answered: the claim is completely false. Donalds is not under investigation. Yet the accusation was launched into the public square right before a primary. That is not politics. That is a spiritual and moral assault.

And this is not only happening in high places. My own son was recently falsely accused. It cost him his job and damaged his reputation. I myself have walked through the fire of false accusations for years. Many of you have too. So today we need to hear what God says about this sin and what it does to a human life.

What Scripture Says:

The ninth commandment is not a suggestion. “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” In Deuteronomy 19:16-19 God established a severe safeguard: if someone rises up as a malicious witness and is proven false, the judges are to do to that person exactly what he intended to do to the one he accused. The punishment he sought for the innocent becomes his own. God calls this purging evil from among the people.

Proverbs places a false witness among the seven things the Lord hates (Proverbs 6:16-19). A lying tongue and a false witness who pours out lies sit right beside hands that shed innocent blood and a heart that devises wicked schemes. In God’s eyes, destroying a person’s name with a lie is not a minor offense. It is an abomination.

Jesus Himself was the ultimate victim of false accusation. The religious leaders sought testimony against Him so they could put Him to death, and many bore false witness, yet their stories did not agree (Mark 14:55-56). Even the perfect Son of God was not spared the weapon of the lying tongue.

What a False Accusation Does to a Person’s Life:

A false accusation is not just words. It is a war club, a sword, a sharp arrow. It does real damage:

•  It steals reputation that may have taken a lifetime to build.

•  It can cost a man his job, his livelihood, and his ability to provide for his family.

•  It plants suspicion in the minds of neighbors, employers, churches, and even family members.

•  It brings shame, anxiety, sleepless nights, and the crushing weight of having to prove a negative.

•  It can fracture marriages and wound children who watch their parent publicly dishonored.

•  It can lead the accused into depression, isolation, or bitterness if they do not take refuge in the Lord.

The damage is rarely fully repaired even when the truth comes out. People remember the accusation longer than the clearing. That is why God treats it so seriously.

The Call for Us Today:

First, we must refuse to participate. Do not share, amplify, or entertain unverified accusations—especially those timed for political or personal advantage. Exodus 23:1 warns: “Do not spread false reports. Do not help a guilty person by being a malicious witness.” Silence in the face of a lie is sometimes the most faithful response.

Second, if you have been falsely accused, Jesus speaks directly to you: “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven” (Matthew 5:11-12). Your vindication ultimately rests with God, not with public opinion. Keep a clear conscience. Walk in integrity. Let the Lord fight for you (Exodus 14:14).

Third, we must pray for those who wield this weapon. They are not only harming others—they are storing up judgment for themselves. A false witness will not go unpunished.

Finally, we must be people of truth in a culture drowning in lies. Speak truth. Demand evidence. Protect the innocent. And when we ourselves fall short, repent quickly.

Closing Prayer:

Father, You are a God of truth. You hate the lying tongue and the false witness. Forgive us for every time we have shared what we did not verify or taken pleasure in another’s fall. Comfort those whose names and livelihoods have been attacked by lies—Byron Donalds, my son, myself, and every listener who carries that wound. Restore what the enemy has tried to steal. Give courage to the falsely accused and a holy fear to those who accuse. Make us a people who speak truth in love and refuse the weapon of the false report. In the name of Jesus, the One who was falsely accused yet rose victorious, Amen.

Brothers and sisters in Christ,

Jesus commanded us to follow Him and to walk as He walked. When we obey that command—when we choose mercy over judgment, forgiveness over accusation, and grace over the weaponizing of another man’s past—we create holy moments. These are moments in which the character of Christ is made visible in us.

The Word of God declares: “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)

That includes every one of us. It includes candidates with imperfect pasts. And it includes those who are currently bringing up old failures as if they themselves never needed mercy.

Jesus said, “Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.” (Matthew 7:1-2)

When believers begin cataloguing another man’s past sins in order to destroy him, we are doing the very thing Scripture forbids. We are bad-mouthing a brother. We are refusing the holy moment Christ calls us to create.

Paul commands us: “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.” (Ephesians 4:32)

And again: “Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.” (Colossians 3:13)

If a man has repented and turned to Christ, if old things are passed away and he is a new creature (2 Corinthians 5:17), then the church has no business keeping the old charge alive for political advantage. That is not discernment. That is the opposite of being Christ-like.

Character matters. Wisdom matters. Accountability matters. No one is calling for blindness. But there is a wide difference between sober evaluation of present fruit and the gleeful dredging up of past sins to disqualify a brother. The first is prudence. The second refuses the holy moment Jesus invites us to create.

Scripture shows us again and again what Christ-like redemption looks like:

•  The father of the prodigal ran to embrace the son who had wasted everything.

•  Saul the persecutor became Paul the apostle.

•  The thief on the cross heard the words, “To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.”

•  Peter, who denied the Lord three times, was restored and commissioned.

In each case God created a holy moment of mercy. He calls us to do the same.

By choosing not to define a brother by his worst chapter, by speaking as those who have been forgiven much, by refusing to join the chorus of accusation, we walk as Christ walked. We create holy moments in a season that desperately needs them.

We are not called to be the prosecution. We are called to be the people who remember that we too were once enemies of God, and that Christ still makes all things new.

After this primary season, we must come together as one. Let us lay aside the sharp words and the old grievances. The real enemy is not the brother across the aisle in our own party. The real enemy is the one who seeks to divide and destroy. Let us therefore stand shoulder to shoulder, having created holy moments through Christ-like mercy, and face what lies ahead united in faith and purpose.

An observation about the protests that took place here on Saturday and across the nation. Although some protesters were paid to protest and bussed in, I believe the vast majority were acting independently to exercise their right to peaceful protest. The right to protest is not in question for me. I believe it is essential we make our voices heard. The question for me is, what exactly were folks protesting about?

Were people protesting about our borders being secure?

Were people protesting deporting illegal dangerous foreigners?

Were people protesting the slowing down of illegal drugs into our country?

Were people protesting potential tax cuts?

Were people protesting defunding countries that hate us? They can hate us for free.

Were people protesting the finding of financial fraud and waste in government programs?

Were people protesting defunding NGOs that hide and steal our tax dollars?

Were people protesting the scaling back of the National Board of Education in the light of the fact our schools rank near the bottom of all industrial nations?

Were people protesting the defunding of killing babies?

Were people protesting the removal of taxing our social security?

Were people protesting the millions of illegal aliens receiving of maximum Social Security benefits?

Were people protesting that millions of illegals were put on Medicare and Medicaid?

Were people protesting the bringing back of industry to America?

Were people protesting that the jobs report went up for two consecutive months?

Were people protesting the firing of corrupt individuals from three-letter agencies?

Were people protesting investigations into how our representatives in D.C. were getting wealthy overnight?

Were people protesting the fear of losing their SS benefits? After all, that is what the mainstream media, CNN and MSNBC, told them.

Were people protesting the investigations into politicians being held responsible to the American people?

At least while the protests were going on around the country, some protesters may have been too busy to try and burn down a Tesla dealership or key a car. Just how does that send a message? Elon Musk owns just 17 percent of Tesla, so who are you hurting? And just a few months ago these same protesters were in favor of using electric vehicles, you know, to save the planet. What happened to that ideology?

These protests leave one with more questions than answers. “Hands-Off”, “Hands-Off” was the battle cry of the protests; “Hands-Off” is what got this country in the shape it is. We need “Hands-On” engagement at all levels to let we the American people get back in charge of the country. We need to wake up to the fact that over the past 10-15 years we have been divided as a nation. We no longer peacefully debate or discuss. Family and friends have been divided along party lines. This was all planned. Remember, it is far easier to control some people than to control all people. Let us work on what binds us together and not on what divides us. We have more in common than we may imagine. We need all “Hands On Deck”!
