For the past year (after launching my website !!) I have been trying to figure out the best way to share my bookish travel guides with the world.

I now have a dedicated New York page on my website (check it out here!) where you can buy a physical map of Brooklyn and Manhattan bookstores (!!), digital guides to all the bookstores (!!) and request a custom bookstore map (!!).

You can also book one of my public bookstore crawls that happen daily!

I have also created complete digital guides (for both city visits and NYC bookstores)! These guides are digitally accessible through Google Maps, and every place comes with a description to help you plan your next bookish adventure. Here are just a couple examples of the maps I have so far!

I’m also now on Bindery! Think of it as Patreon for bookish creators! You can join the community of traveling readers for free and get weekly bookish updates- for both NYC locals and world travelers.

Wether you have been here since the beginning, or are just finding my Substack thank you for the support! I will be slowly moving all my Substack posts to my blog and bindery to have things all in one place. I hope you will join me there!

TL;DR- I’m moving most of my long form content to my website and subscriptions to Patreon (launching in June!). This Substack is on hiatus and may be back in the future!

When I started Substack in April of 2024 I had no idea what I was doing. I just knew I had so many fun trips that I wanted to share with family and friends and Instagram was not the place where I could do full city guides.

In the two years since (!!) a lot has changed. I have grown my instagram to almost 10k followers and found a niche in bookish NYC. Last year I did monthly updates here on Substack of all the content I would post on socials. It was a great way to get practice on writing regular updates- but it wasn’t exactly what I wanted.

Starting last December I started dreaming about in person experiences. Really, I just wanted to host affordable and inclusive bookish events that I didn’t see in NYC. What started as a bookish happy hour with 15 readers in a public park last summer now is 2-3 bookish events a month!

I realized while posting internet content is cool- I realized through the events that I really enjoyed (and missed!) actually interacting with people irl. So those bookstore crawl for friends led to launching my Airbnb Experience (you can book here!)

I also realized making little 8 or 45 second reels did not cut it for some of the content I wanted to share… So I now have a Youtube (which should go and follow here!)

For a while now I have been working on my website (https://www.bookmoretravels.com/) as another way to compile all my travels and guides. Recently I have started playing around with the blog function on the website and learning about it. For now, I am moving all my long form content to the website. This way I have a space where I can have everything- the long posts about city recs, links to my guides, events, and whatever I want to work on next.

So that being said- I will be posting regularly on my website similar long form city content (with a bookish twist of course!) I think having everything in one place will be a great way to organize all my content and grow. I will be spending the next month or two transitioning the couple city bookish guides from here on Substack to over on the website along with adding new ones (London is currently up and Scotland this month!)

Lastly- thank you to the couple premium subscribers I have on there! At this point I will be cancelling your payments for the future.

… but there will be more to come! I am in the process of creating my Patreon. With Patreon, I’ll have more flexibility on tiers for subscribers and will be offering different things for both my NYC locals and supporters around the country (and maybe world?) It will be a place where I share all my Google Maps pins for both NYC and around the world, offer discounts to in person events, and have you help me decide what to edit next. I see it as having more ways to interact with supporters than Substack.

I will be following up with you as far as gifting you months of my Patreon subscription once it’s up and running (hopefully by the end of the month!) as a thank you.

Also! I am a one woman team. There is only so much I can dream and do. I am doing the best I can- but I have a list of things I want to do that is so long but doing my best. So many good things still coming!

Lastly a HUGE thank you to everyone who has supported me so far! Everyone from my family to friends new and old (and those I haven’t met irl yet!) I know there is a lot of content in the world and you have chosen into my little corner of the internet. It honestly amazes me how many people are responding to what I make and that is why I keep doing it!

PS- this Substack won’t be completely dead. I will post updates when big things come along and could potentially come back to it in the future as my needs change. Secondhand Bookstores

Capitol Hill Books | 657 C St SE, Washington, DC 20003

A cozy used bookstore that is worth the hunt. Do not come in looking for a specific book. Instead take the time to browse the shelves and you may find something you didn’t know you needed!

Carpe Librum | 1350 I St NW, Washington, DC 20005

Carpe Librum can be found in downtown and is a nonprofit selling used books to benefit the local schools. The selection is all donated so it’s a bit of a gamble what you can find but the prices are insane!

Second Story Books | 2000 P St NW, Washington, DC 20036

I always plan to stop at this store since it is one of my favorites. The used books are great quality and a wide range of genres. I always seem to find something there to buy! Someday I will visit their book warehouse in Rockville which houses thousands of used books.

The Lantern Bookshop | 3241 P St NW, Washington, DC 20007

A volunteer run used bookstore run by volunteers and benefiting Bryn Mawr College students with scholarships. Make sure to browse their extensive collection for hidden gems!

Specialty Bookstores

Bold Fork Books | 3064 Mt Pleasant St NW, Washington, DC 20009

Selling books on food, travel, home goods and more. They have food focused events as well!

JF Books | 1509 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC 20036

Specializing in books of all genres from the AAPI experience including a large selection of books in the Chinese language.

Little District Books | 631 Pennsylvania Ave. SE, Washington, DC 20003

DC’s only queer bookstore! They recently moved to a much larger space and now sell a large variety of books by and for the LGBTQIA community.

Middle East Books and More | 1902 18th St NW, Washington, DC 20009

As the name suggests, they stock books of all types by Middle Easter authors and about the Middle East in general.

The book selection is focused more on business adjacent books- engineering, science, law and more. It also is a cafe that serves Ethiopian which I will have to try at some point!

Busboys and Poets | Multiple Locations

This restaurant, bookstore and cultural hub has been serving its community for over 20 years and has grown to nine locations in DC and Maryland. I was impressed with the amount of allergen friendly options they have and it makes for a great choice for readers to stop!

Daydrift Books & Cafe | 1550 Crystal Dr, Arlington, VA 22202

DC’s newest book cafe has opened in Crystal City! With a rotating menu and a variety of seating choices it’s a great spot to sip, read and work.

Kramers | 1517 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC 20036

This classic indie bookstore with a cafe serving all kinds of literary themed food and drink. Make sure to check out their afternoon tea for readers. It is $30 for a pot of tea and tower of treats and food!

The Potter’s House Café & Bookstore | 1658 Columbia Rd NW, Washington, DC 20009

For over 60 years this bookstore cafe has been a community hub and gathering place. It spacious interior with plenty of seating makes it a great spot to hang out. Plus the southern comfort food is so yum! Update January 2026 While they are currently closed, I am hoping that things can be worked out so they can be up and running again for the community soon.

Bookstores in Alexandria

This mural says it perfect- Alexandria truly is a perfect place for readers. The cutest multi colored buildings and cobble stones streets hold a variety of local shops. There are two independent bookstores that are must visits too!

A classic indie bookstore full of a variety of titles. It’s so bright and airy in there and the booksellers are always so kind. Don’s miss their children’s section of young readers!

A Sundays only flea market full of interesting items. Be prepared to haggle on the price if you want a good deal!

Jenni Bick Custom Journals | 1300 Connecticut Ave NW #101, Washington, DC 20036

They carry their own line of journals along with a selection of other well known collections. The perfect place to stop for some stationery!

Food to Try

The Den Coffeehouse & Wine Bar | 5015 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC 20008

While this spot is below a bookstore it is technically it’s own store! Serving drinks and food in a relaxed setting. Check out their bookish events if you are in the neighborhood.

Lucky Buns | 2000 18th St NW, Washington, DC 20009

Yummy Asian fusion spot with huge burgers and yummy cocktails!

Nando’s | Multiple Locations

A Peruvian fusion chain that started that is just amazing. Anytime I am in a city where I can enjoy their chicken, sides and peri-peri sauce I will do it!

Allegory | 1201 K St NW #1, Washington, DC 20005

This gorgeous literary themed bar is a must visit for readers in DC. The menu rotates frequently and always centers a different allegory. A very unique drinking experience!

We had a fabulous three day weekend in Toronto last fall, and I just have to share our trip! We visited thirteen bookstores along with a matcha latte every day and other yummy food spots! Read on for more :)

Like I Mentioned in the Video, we spent time in three unique areas in Toronto for our weekend visit. We stayed on the West side of the city and stuck to the major shopping streets. I personally call the areas as:

1- Kensington Market and College Street; 2- University Area; and 3- Queen Street Area

Day 1- Kensington Market and College Street

Start with breakfast in Kensington Market- there are a ton of fun options! We wanted to eat at Pera Cafe but there was a really long wait so we stopped at Film Cafe and really enjoyed it!

If you love matcha like me you need to stop at Wu Wei Coffee for one of my favorites on the trip!

From Kensington Market we did a bit of a loop and visited four bookstores:

Little Ghost Books- A horror bookstore and cafe with everything from goosebumps to monster romance. A little bit for all kinds of readers!

Sellers & Newel- Local used bookstore and event space for the community. Make sure to check out the basement for even more books!

Balfour Books- A cozy shop with books stacked floor to ceiling with a large variety!

she said boom!- No frills store for used books and records

For dinner we split one of the giant poutines at Smoke’s Poutinerie Adelaide which is open late and makes some crazy options!

Day 2- Walking around the University Area

We started the morning off with an immersive escape room at a castle! It was hosted by Casa Loma Escape Rooms and was a really cool experience. We may have failed at the final challenge but it was still fun (plus only a 15% escape rate which is crazy!) After that we explored more of the area around the University of Toronto

Flying Books at Neverland- This downtown location of the iconic Toronto bookstore is small but mighty. It serves drinks of all types along with books and wine. It is also connected to a brunch spot I wish I ate at!

Seekers Books- A wide variety of used books for all kinds of readers with a cute chop cat!

Bakka-Phoenix Books- It’s Canada's oldest Speculative Fiction bookstore! Home to a wide variety of genres with new books on the ground floor and a basement full of second hand books!

We also visited my favorite location of BMV Books here but more on that later!

For dinner we went to Nando’s PERi-PERi which has the best chicken and fries! If you are ever visiting somewhere with a location please visit!

Day 3- Shopping on Queen Street

If I had one day to visit Toronto I would walk down Queen Street. I think it’s the perfect mix of shopping, bookstores and good food and drink.

Hopeless Romantic Books- Of course I had to visit the romance bookstore in Toronto! And this spot was so cute with it’s bubble gum pink walls, cutest merch, hidden room and so much more!

Type Books- The quintessential indie bookstore selling a bit of everything for all readers!

Glad Day Lit- The world’s oldest LGBTQ bookshop! They have recently opened in this new space and a great addition to the street!

For dinner we had a salad at Mandy’s which is a fast casual chain full of yummy veggie forward meals. If you want something a bit fancier try Mamakas Taverna or No Vacancy (but make reservations before!) We then got drinks at PREQUEL & CO. APOTHECARY which was the coolest speakeasy vibe and had a fantastic menu. It’s hard to find a place that makes amazing drinks that both my partner and I love and this is one of the few places that did it!

A Shoutout to the Chain Bookstores

I am a big fan of indie booksellers, but there is something to say for the chain bookstores that keep reading accessible for all readers! In Toronto we have BMV Books for all your used book needs and Indigo as your one stop shop for new books and items for readers!

Finally made my way out to Staten Island for their only independent bookstore in the borough. Had the sweetest conversation with the own and loved exploring the space. I think it is worth a visit!

Four friends are starting a bookstore in Harlem! Currently there are no independent bookstores in the neighborhood so this is a big need! They are so sweet so make sure to follow and support them on this journey and they pop up all over the neighborhood!

There were 8 readers joining me in Greenpoint of a cold Saturday morning. After some drinks and food at Pairing Cafe, we walked to five different bookstores to browse, swap book recs and more!

Village Works

An eccentric, truly nyc, bookstore and art gallery. It is run by volunteers and stocks most used books, with some new. And has an emphasis on books about nyc. Plus a cute shop cat!

Clown Show Prison Books and Fine Objects

Maybe one of the coolest bookstores I have been to in nyc. Don’t let the name scare you away- this hidden gem of a bookstore is still very approachable for all readers and they have a grat collection with something for everyone!

Words on Warren

This is such a cute children’s bookstore that just opened in Tribeca! This cozy space is perfect for young readers with plenty of places to sit and read books.

Adanne Bookshop

Not just a bookshop- but a community gathering space. There are so many different workshops hosted most weekends. The collection is curated and includes books across genres written by and for the black community.

Goal 3- Connect with Bookish Friends

I hosted my first crafty bookish event !!

Y’all it’s hard to find places to host events in nyc! They usually want to charge $$$ and I am trying to keep things affordable for all nyc readers! So I was excited to partner with Haricto Vert’s Craft Nook in Williamsburg for a bookmark making event :) Using a ton of art supplies and their iconci picto charms we made some fun bookmarks! Hope to have more crafty bookish events in the next year too.

I am also working on my audio book journey of Ice Planet Barbarians… what can I say I really am invested in what is going to happen to the aliens and humans!

I am a sucker for a bookstore wine bar- and Cordelia is the perfect mix. This beautifully curated and decorated space has a variety of books for purchase. It is also a great place to grab a drink and read or get some work done! I am so impressed with the events they host too- I variety of bookish, music and community focused events held throughout the week. Whether you are looking for a relaxing place to read, explore a new wine or meet up with a friend- Cordelia has you covered!

The Little Bookshop Insta Spotlight

A cozy bookstore cafe just opened in Brooklyn! All the recipes (and store merch) is created by their mother which is so fun! Of course I had to get the deviled eggs, potato salad and sweet tea! Several people were working while I was visiting- the vibes are perfect to read and work!

The Twisted Spine Insta Spotlight

What started as a pop up for two lovers of dark literature has become the most perfect spooky space. Not only do they sell a fantastic selection of books, but they also serve food and drinks! Plus their outside back patio is a great place to read. Make sure to check it out!

Huge news! This past month has been a ton of behind the scenes work. I set up an LLC (which is way more confusing then it needs to be??) I am also looking for an accountant that can help with taxes for a *content creator* (if you have recs send them my way) and a graphic designer to help add the finishing touches to some future projects (again, send me recs if you have them!)

BUT the website is finished! After trying to do it on my end (and causing a lot of stress) my partner stepped in and helped. I am most proud of the free travel guides from some of the posts I have made previously This will be a place where I can keep track of all the free content that I want to share!

The New York City Page is still a work in progress. I have plans for links to local book clubs, cool events and more coming soon!

You might see in the store there is a product for purchase already- if you live in nyc, are visiting nyc, or know someone visiting soon this might be a cool present! I will help you plan a day visiting some of the 140 independent bookstores here. This is a soft launch and I am listing it at a lower price for now to help me practice.

New York Comic Con 2025

It was my first time going to NYCC and wow was it an experience. I truly did not know what I was signing up for! It was three days of getting up at 7 am and walking around for 12 hours carrying a bag of books. It was so fun meeting booksta friends irl too! I ended up with like 30 books? Photo includes the five books I bought, but most of them were giveaways! I also went to panels and met some of my favorite authors. I will totally be going next year!

BEM finally opened their physical location in Bed-Stuy! It is a gorgeous space full of books on black food literature. They are hosting a ton of cool food centered events coming up and I hope to join one soon!

My Top Three Manhattan Used Bookstores

Argosy Book Store Insta Spotlight

116 E 59th St, New York, NY 10022

You can get a little lost as you step back in time at Argosy. The front room is gorgeous with its wood paneling, green lamps, and treasures in both books, art and maps. There is something for almost everyone here at all price points. Make sure to go downstairs for shelves full of all types of used books. That is where the treasure hunt can really happen. With its convenient location close to Central Park and Grand Central this is a perfect addition to a typical NYC vacation.

When I heard that there was a bookstore that combined my two loves (used books and pickles) I knew I had to visit. I honestly don’t know anything that would be more perfect. A tiny space packed full of used books and records along with their own line of pickles and pickle themed merch. And if you are visiting on a Tuesday or Wednesday you can trade in your books for a free jar of pickles! I posted about that earlier this week and highly recommend.

This September has seemed like a blur. I have been making *big moves* to make this passion project an actual paying gig. I set up my LLC (!!), got my first publisher mail (!!) and hosted a trial run reading retreat (!!) The weather is finally turning into fall (which is my favorite time of year!) and I can’t wait for what October has in store~

I was invited to the “Well Enough” Event hosted by @harmonyrodaleconvergent last week. It was my first publisher event and I was so excited!

We also had a lovely conversation with the three authors/influencers
@thedailyvictorian who I have been following on my personal account for a while now and I *love* their thought provoking yoga videos!
@shredhappens with their fabulous cookbook (that I immediately tried a recipe from that Braden has said was his favorite new dish this year)
and @drsalaswhalen who is new to me, but I loved learning how their balance their career, educating people and motherhood all at the same time!

Hosting my First Reading Retreat

This past weekend I hosted my *first* reading retreat at the cutest Bed and Breakfast in Beacon, NY. It was a couple closer reader friends (who I have met through booksta!) as we spent the weekend reading, crafting, shopping down the Main Street, and more! I can’t wait to share more of these memories and (hopefully) host more retreats in the future!

New York City’s newest pop up bookstore! I met them at their booth at the Brooklyn Book Festival. It was such a cozy set up and they have a little bit of everything.

Okay so this is the best used bookstore in Brooklyn (and def up there for all of NYC). They have both new and used, but the amount of mass paperbacks they have in the back is amazing. I found copies of one of my fav current series (Black Dagger Brotherhood) for $4 a piece! It is off the beaten path and worth it for the gems.

In September we had two book club meetings! And of course we discussed the books in locations mentioned in the plot!

For our *Swoon Society* book club we discussed Promise Me Sunshine by Cara Bastone. It was a sweet friends to lovers romance that gracefully dealt with the big feelings that comes with loss. We discussed on the Staten Island Ferry while eating sandwiches you can only buy in NYC (iykyk)

For our *Set in NYC* book club we discussed A Woman is no Man by Etaf Rum. This powerful story will be on my 5 star reads of the year. We discussed it at Elegante Pizza over slices- the exact pizza shop named in the book!

Goal 5- Read my physical TBR

This month I wasn’t reading as much as the summer- which is totally okay! It consisted of my two book club picks, two Black Dagger Brotherhood books, some romance and a novella from a small publisher.

New Book Highlight

At the Brooklyn Book Fest a booth for Joyland Publishing caught my eye. They are an NYC based small publisher who just released their first novella with a second one coming soon. When I learned that the novella was set in NYC and the author was there to sign of course I had to buy it!

Information Age by Cora Lewis is told in a flow of interconnecting vignettes and dialogue. I really can’t describe the feeling that this book captures. But the threads of womanhood, being an adult in NYC, connection with family and more really got me. I will be hyping this book for a long time !!

I love used bookstore- the thrill of the hunt and the excitement from a good deal. After a year of research here is my compilation of the thirteen exclusively used bookstores. I know a lot of bookstores have a sale section along with their new stock- but these are all second hand!

When this bookstore opened in my neighborhood I knew I was in trouble. This book store is tucked away in Park Slope is the perfect place to find hidden gems. The walls are just covered in books! They specialize in collecting literary fiction, books in other languages, and non fiction. Their $1 book carts out front are WILD and can be a great surprise. Since it’s a little out of the way in a quiet neighborhood the selection can’t be beat.

      My second and third visits happened during two separate 18 hour layovers as a flight attendant. It reminded me of all the good memories as I visited old spots and new. The city and the people are a little rough around the edges, but I have always been treated nicely. You can see in the buildings downtown the impact of the steel industry when that business was booming. And still to this day, foundations bring some of the best art and culture to this little corner of the country.

Nefer Bookcafe’

This book cafe is the cutest! The energy is so positive and the drink menu is rotating and always delicious. Their mission is to combat grind culture by creating low key environment and books that help people slow down and connect.

Turn the Page Again

This nonprofit bookstore sells used books at a great price. The employees are all working to help gaining work skills I had a great time talking books with them! It is a great place to both buy books and donate!

Just one book club this month with all the traveling… For Set in NYC we discussed Go Tell on the Mountain by James Baldwin. Soaking up the last warm day of summer we read on the James Baldwin lawn in Harlem. This semi autobiographical novel led to a great discussion about life, growing up, and religion! Can’t wait for next month!

This month of reading hasn’t been too shabby with ten books! Though only two of them are from my physical TBR… but I enjoyed my reading nonetheless!

New Book Highlight

I have been recently able to read some books BEFORE they get released, which is so exciting! Last month I read By the Horns by Ruby Dixon and it should be released tomorrow September 2nd. You know I will be running to the store to get that beautiful first edition. I’m grateful that my gal Gwenna gets her own book! While I enjoyed Bull Moon Rising, I LOVED by the Horns… I thought the couple made sense together, the mystery was well executed and the spice was turned up- which all led to a great book! This July marked the first time I have taken a hiatus from the page. So yes, this update is a little late but I had a wonderful time in Europe! Still spending some more time logged out of my insta, but wanted to still keep up my monthly update!

What a cool bookstore! Part nonprofit, part gallery, and a ton of small printed and unique books and zines to look through. It is the perfect place to find what cool new stuff is happening in NYC local publishing.

And that’s all for this month! I was so busy with the book clubs and then being on vacation in Europe in July. I am hoping in August to make a solid dent at the dozen or so bookstores I have left in NYC!

Had so much fun with a Trader Joes picnic at Sheep’s Meadow in Central Park. Both the store and the place was featured in our first book club pick, Maybe Once, Maybe Twice by Alison Rose Greenberg. While we are not meeting in August, stay tuned for our September pick!

For our inaugural meeting we discussed City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert while snacking on diner food on a rooftop in midtown. Both the food and location represented the setting for the book! Can’t wait for our August book club!

Goal 5- Read my physical TBR

Being on vacay meant a lot of reading! Both on the beach, in airplanes and while waiting for things to start. A whopping 14 books! Three of them were ARC (Advanced Reader Copies) which means I get to read them before they get published!

I posted on my stories, but I am fully entrenched in the Black Dagger Brotherhood and will be continuing that series for the foreseeable future.

In theme with my travels to Greece, I also got into the Neon Gods series (which are Greek mythology retellings) and will be reading more of those too!

I went to an after hours even at The Morgan Library to celebrate their new exhibit on Jane Austen. It was a wonderful night of dancing, crafts and looking through the exhibit. Plus I got to do it with my friend Sarah! Would highly recommend a visit if you can (it’s open until September)

Getting Paid for Videos (!!)

I am super proud of my *first* UGC (user generated content) for a travel company going live this month! I have had a couple companies reach out but wanted to make sure they aligned with my vision (sharing bookish nyc recommendations). I have been working with Only in Your State to create videos featuring New York City (and the state as a whole!) My first video was a book crawl to the oldest bookstores in NYC! Exhibit B. Books

A bookstore for true crime books (if you can’t tell by the title). I had a wonderful time meeting the owner (Sarah). She operates the store out of her basement (which is open by appointment) but you can also shop online worldwide! She truly is so passionate about books and bookselling and was a joy to chat with.

Libreria Barco De Papel Comunitaria

The *only* bookstore in NYC exclusively stocking Spanish language books. It has been a mainstay for the community for decades and such a great spot if you are in need of Spanish language books- everything from niche to popular fiction!

The World's Borough Bookshop

Did you know Queens is the most diverse county in the USA? And this bookstore reflects that with it’s shelves full of books and art from BIPOC authors and artists. It is so cute inside and so fun to visit. (hint hint, if you are flying in to LGA it is a short walk from the Q70 bus transfer!)

It’s been a long time coming, and a lot of work, but excited to see what events and activities I can put together here! If you are an NYC local you should come to one of the events. And if you are not local (and still want to participate in the book club virtually) message me and I will send you the group chat links!

I made the Wall Street Journal (well a photo of me and my friends made it). It was taken at the Rebecca Yarros NYC reading event held in February to celebrate the release of her newest book. I somehow sourced four tickets to it and went with my friends! While I find some of the wording in the title of the article kind of weird (who says fornicating anymore ??) it does bring up some interesting points about the future of romantasy!

I have started my summer of romance strong! The Ripped Bodice does a summer reading bingo (that anyone can join!) with a variety of things you can find in romance novels (like a Haunted House, Roommates, and set in Texas which I checked off this month!)

Five of these books are from my physical TBR (though three of them were recent releases that I had to get). But at least I am prioritizing the physical books I already own!

Visiting One of America’s Oldest Libraries

You probably can tell how passionate I am about bookish travel. I am also a huge fan of the off the beaten path historical parts of NYC too. So when I heard that there was a library that is older then the country itself (it has it’s original charter from King George !!) in a nondescript townhouse in the Upper East Side I had to visit. It was a dream to take the (free !!) tour of this membership library and if I lived in the neighborhood I would definitely visit a lot more! Regardless I have their events on my radar for future trips.

Orlando’s Immersive Bookstore

This is the second year I have flown down to Orlando for a couple days to celebrate my birthday. Of course Disney was involved, but I also had a fun book crawl! The highlight was visiting Authentic Books. It is an immersive book experience- you pick one book and then fill a tote with sensory items to compliment your reading experience! I loved picking out my items and would definitely do it again!

Book Culture

One of the best used bookstores in the city! Over two floors you can find fantastic books. Bottom floor will be bestsellers and full price books, but make your way up the stairs for great deals on new books and a selection of used books at a discount! There will be something for every reader here.

Blue Stock Cooperative Bookstore

This bookstore has it all- part books, part community space, and part coffee shop. They focus on queer and diverse authors. Books at all price points including a sale section. It also has classes, workshops and other events for the community and visitors! It is a safe space for all.

The Sunday before my birthday I hosted another book crawl- this time in Manhattan! We stopped at some of my favorite bookstores in Lower Manhattan and some of my favorite shops (yes pickles from the Pickle Guys and sweet treats from Bon Bon were included). Check it out below!

This month I treated myself and read a couple books that I had really wanted to read for a while. I think my birthday month is the perfect occasion! Loved the book sfrom Susan Lee, Julie Soto and Ali Hazelwood- and I got to meet them at an event the day after my birthday! *highly recommend* all three of their books.

I have been allowing myself to dnf books after 100 pages so there were two this month- A discovery of Witches and Variation. They were both good books but just not my kind of book!

Candlelit Silent Book Club

Last month I went to a silent reading event that I absolutely loved. It was hosted by Mise en Scènt and The Twisted Spine. Mise en Scènt is a candle studio inspired by films with the cutest space in Industry City. The Twisted Spine is NYC’s first Horror and Dark Literature focused bookstore! There was popcorn, wine and of course delicious smelling candles. There was time for quiet reading and then time to chat about what we were reading! The next event is May 13th!

Brooklyn Book Crawl

Independent Bookstore Day is always the last Saturday in April. Bookstores all over the country celebrate with events, author signings, and more! In Brooklyn 26 bookstores participated in a week long book crawl! I visited 18 (sadly I got very sick last week but I had planned on visiting them all!) which was still a lot of fun!

Summer is in the air and spring cleaning is in full swing! Might I recommend adding books to your local Free Little Library? It is great way to be sustainable and see what your neighbors are reading! I am lucky to live in a neighborhood where there are many to choose from! I do have a couple favorites though.

Terrace Books

I am so glad I could finally visit this gem! It has recently moved to this large space, but it is still so cozy! Located in a quiet neighborhood of Windsor Terrace it is the perfect place to browse. The booksellers were friendly and the selection was varied! Plus it is a couple blocks from Prospect Park which makes for a lovely afternoon.

This has become my new favorite used bookstore in Manhattan. It is a large room full of great quality used books. I picked out three that were on my TBR and all seemed brand new. It is pay what you wish and all the proceeds go back into community building. They also host community events (the night I visited they were hosting a women’s self defense class!)

When I tell people I am visiting every bookstore in NYC the follow up question is usually, okay then what is your favorite?? And that is such a difficult question and changes all the time! However, for Independent Bookstore Day I compiled my current top five bookstores. I tried to represent both Manhattan and Brooklyn where I have been focusing the most on visiting bookstores so far. Though this is subject to change!

Still focusing on reading my physical TBR this year! Six out of the eleven books I read this month I already owned (and the others were silly little romances for an dopamine boost).

My top five star read for April is definitely Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Pérez. Even though it was published in 2019, it (kind of sadly) still important to read today. I honestly felt seen and gave me scientific data to back on some feelings of being in the dark in the last year medically. If you are a gal looking for data to back up your experiences or someone just looking to learn more about data gaps in the world this is a highly recommend from me!

Since it’s the first month, I wanted to include my 2025 resolutions. These five goals are what is guiding this newsletter and what I will be sharing most updates on!

Goal 1- Try New Bookish Activities Every Month (The Highlights)

New York Public Library Happy Hour

If you are a bookish NYC’er on a budget this is the perfect activity for you! NYPL hosted their first bookish happy hour at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building and I had the best time. The *free* event included: bookish bingo, socializing and a blind date book swap! Also food and drinks for purchase! Barnes and Noble Union Square- Book Festival

This is the second year they have done this event and this year it sold out in minutes. Crossing my fingers that they can move to a bigger venue next year since they totally have enough people wanting to go! While day 1 was one ticket to the open floor of book giveaways, day 2 you were able to purchase tickets to what spoke to you. At first I was bummed that I didn’t get to day 1, but after seeing the craziness I appreciated the more relaxed pace of day 2!
- Spotlight Signings- four authors available! (cost $23.77 per author)
Each ticket included the authors latest book in paperback and access to the line for them to sign up to three books
- “Love Between the Lines” Panel Cost $28.25 (included a $10 B&N giftcard)
After the panel you could stay for signature for any or all of the panelists!

I will keep this as a reference for next year if they do it again! Overall, it ended up being a great deal (if you could get the tickets)

Yu & Me Books

This cozy asian and women-owned bookstore is the perfect spot to stop in Chinatown. They a great collection of new and used books to browse. The focus is on AAPI authors with a whole section focusing on Chinatown and NYC. You can also order espresso drinks. There is a cozy reading space in the back to sit and read for a while!

Hive Mind Books & Coffee Shop

This bookstore is new to the area (less the six months there) and what a great addition. Bright airy and clean- a perfect spot to grab a coffee and browse. Their focus is on queer and hard to find books and prints. A great spot while in Bushwick!

Books of Wonder

This bookstore is a book wonderland for kids and the kid at heart! Full of new titles, loved classes, and a whole display for rare and out of print titles. Honestly it is worth a stop to see their collection of these rare books. It is cozy and full of not just books but memorabilia or recent and classic books. The staff were lovely and I was overhearing them recommend books to their younger patrons!

Goal 3- Connect with Bookish Friends (this time in Orlando!)

What a joy it is to have bookish friends all over the place. Of course my visit to Orlando included some bookstores, here are some of my favorites!

The Black Rabbit Bookbar- This gothic and spooky bookbar was a perfect spot. Their coffee drinks are unique and have fun names. I loved looking through their books, art and other things for sale.

Sunshine Book Co.- This is what I imagine a perfect independent bookstore to be. There is a homey feel (probably since it used to be a house) and you can find something for everyone here.

omg! thrift- The fact that books were $1 or $2 is crazy to me. And the selection was pretty good for a thrift store.

BrightLight Books- Probably the best consignment bookstore I have been to as far as selection and quality. There is so much to look at and you can spend a while there.

Goal 4- Complete Bookstore Guides

Goal 5- Read my physical TBR (My top read of the month)

Casey McQuiston just gets me. This second chance romance on a food and wine tour of Europe was all the cozy summer vibes I needed this month. Love all the characters and character development. Plus this first edition has some cute sprayed edges I love! This physical book will be proudly displayed on my shelves.
