There is an ancient festival for the particular agony of loving a mortal thing at the incandescent height of its beauty, precisely when the dark has begun to quicken inside it. And like so much of the ancient work of tending bodies toward and away from this world, this knowledge belonged to women.

The Adonia was an unofficial festival of ancient Greece, celebrated largely among women, on rooftops, in houses, in the fugitive territories of female life. No solemn procession of important men was required. Its god was Adonis, the exquisitely beautiful mortal beloved of Aphrodite, killed young and mourned extravagantly. Its central horticultural mystery was almost perversely simple: the women planted gardens designed to die. They sowed seeds in shallow vessels with too little earth to sustain them, then drank, sang, mourned, and coaxed them into quick, green life. Within eight days the plants sprang upward with all the obscene confidence of viriditas and, having nowhere for their roots to go, began almost immediately to wither. At the end of the festival, the women gathered up the spent gardens and carried them away to be ritually cast into the sea or into springs.

These were called the Gardens of Adonis: brief, feverish little gardens where desire and disappearance were made to grow from the same handful of earth. What kind of people sow a garden knowing they will have to mourn it, you ask so innocently? People who know something about love.

I have been thinking about the Adonia nonstop in this voluptuous extremity of Late Summer, when the hills have gone leonine beneath the sun and every garden seems to be spending itself toward some magnificent conclusion. Figs split their purple skins from the pressure of their own sweetness, fallen fruit ferments into nectar for wasps and flies, even the afternoon light has thickened into something amber and narcotic. August has the temperament of a Greek god at the end of a feast: gilded, drunken, profligate, already carrying the underworld in its mouth.

Late Summer has never struck me as a season of simple abundance. It is abundance beginning to reveal its terrible secret, the one it hides deep inside of coffers of nectar and incandescent fuzz: Everything ripens toward disappearance.

And this summer I am learning this terrible botany in the body of my father, for he, too, is withering. There is no prettier word for it, nor one I trust more. Since the grand undoing of April, the vigorous architecture by which he once moved through the world has been relinquishing itself by increments: muscle loosening its claim on bone, appetite retreating, swallowing becoming labor, his eyes increasingly closed to us, and speech—which once seemed so ordinary I could telephone him without reverence—becoming rare enough to feel like visitation. One by one the old vestments of personhood have fallen away: his apartment, his clothes, his independence, his ability to walk, bathe and feed himself; in their place came the feeding tube, the diaper, the hospital bed, three pneumonias, and the strange medical liturgy of paperwork, Medi-Cal applications, and DNRs. The man who once occupied the world with such specificity is still here, emphatically and irreducibly my father, but the body that has carried him for nearly ninety years has begun loosening its ancient agreements with life.

I find myself studying every small sign for evidence that some hidden root still holds—how is his breathing, did he recognize anyone, can he lift the telephone, can he swallow?—as though sufficiently exquisite attention might reveal the occult mechanism by which a beloved body can be persuaded to remain. I keep wanting the garden to have deeper soil, more water, another season. Perhaps this is one of the great cruelties of caretaking: love disguises mortality as a problem that greater devotion ought to be able to solve. As a taoist physician, I am particularly susceptible to this delusion; I have spent my adult life studying the mysterious technologies by which the failing organism may be fed, warmed, moved, fortified, coaxed back toward itself, and somewhere in me persists the ancient and impossible conviction that if I can only find the right medicine, the right nourishment, the deeper layer of earth, I might persuade his roots to hold.

Love becomes frantic housekeeping at the threshold of the underworld, and women have been keeping this vigil for as long as bodies have been entering and leaving the world. We have learned by hand the humiliations and sacraments of incarnation. We have washed the sheets beneath the dying, held bowls beneath mouths, wiped shit from bodies that once carried us, pressed cool cloths to foreheads, made soup no one wanted, listened from the next room for the cough and learned, eventually, the terrible significance of silence. There is an entire female history of civilization written in basins of dirty water, an unrecorded liturgy of tending performed at bedsides and birth beds, wherever the grand abstractions of life and death collapse into the animal facts of blood, milk, shit, sputum, hunger, fever and breath. And every caretaker eventually arrives at the humiliating limit of her devotion: the place where no greater tenderness, competence or vigilance can bargain another season from the body, and love must relinquish its fantasy of rescue without relinquishing the beloved.

The women of the Adonia understood something about this that our culture, with its heroic medicine, anti aging industries, refrigerated flowers and embalmed bodies, does not particularly wish to know. They did not plant an everlasting garden but a mortal one, a little green cosmos whose beauty depended upon its brevity. And when its tender shoots leapt astonishingly toward the sun and then bowed back toward the earth, the women did not intervene in the old traffic between flowering and disappearance. They remained beside the garden and wailed. We can learn a few things from their ecstatic grief.

Outside my life as a doctor, I was once a priestess in a community devoted to the ritual mysteries of sex and death, where I learned that grief, given a body and witnesses, can become a form of gnosis. This is not a metaphor. The most potent rites I encountered asked us not to master sorrow but to enter it bodily, to wail and writhe and weep in the company of others until the civilized membrane between self and world grew thin enough to become permeable. I remember bodies collapsed together on the floor in mourning and the almost unbearable aliveness that came when every small fiction of permanence had been stripped away. Grief has this strange erotic intelligence: it returns us, naked of reassurance, to the terrible intimacy of being temporary creatures among other temporary creatures.

Perhaps this is why the myth of Adonis feels to me less like tragedy than a vegetal transmission on the erotics of impermanence. He enters the world already entangled in the promiscuous metabolism of the living: his mother Myrrha becomes a myrrh tree, the tree splits open, and from its fragrant wound emerges an exquisitely beautiful mortal boy. Then Eros gets its hands on him. Aphrodite adores him, a wild boar opens his thigh, his hot blood enters the earth, and the grieving goddess pours nectar into the wound until anemones push their tender heads through the soil. Woman becomes tree becomes boy becomes lover becomes blood becomes flower, the ten thousand things eating, fucking, flowering, dying, forever slipping their little identities into one another. Adonis is Tao briefly persuaded into the unbearably beautiful shape of a man, and the myth offers no clean border between incarnation and decomposition, only form surrendering itself promiscuously into form.

The women of the Adonia understood that such knowledge cannot remain philosophical for very long; eventually the animal body must be given somewhere to put it. Our culture prefers grief rehabilitated into composure, something to be processed, moved through, brought to closure and returned neatly to the private sphere, as though sorrow were an administrative backlog and successful mourning meant becoming socially unobjectionable again. The women had another idea: take it to the roof! Bring wine, bring lettuce, bring your girlfriends, bring the dead beautiful boy and the goddess who could not save him, and make of the rooftop a temporary autonomous zone of lamentation above the ordered city, where grief could be planted, danced beside, screamed through the body and returned to its ancient status as evidence that something had been extravagantly adored. Their gardens did not ask sorrow to become useful: they gave it soil and witnesses.

This would already be enough of a teaching for one summer. But Aphrodite, apparently, has a vicious sense of timing.

At precisely the moment I am being initiated into the unbearable fact of losing someone I have loved for my entire life, I have fallen in love. New love has entered the same house as anticipatory grief, and suddenly the Adonia is no longer an ancient ritual I am contemplating but a cosmology taking place inside my own animal body. I can no longer pretend that I love you contains anywhere within it the promise I get to keep you. There is no version of the story in which nobody loses anybody. This is the obscene clause buried in every love contract. Aphrodite signs it. So do we.

We have sentimentalized Aphrodite because we prefer our goddess of love without her funerary knowledge, giving her roses while politely removing the vase before the petals brown. But Aphrodite is older and wetter than romance. Born from sea foam, she governs the great promiscuous appetite by which life reaches wildly beyond itself: mycelium trafficking sugars beneath the forest floor, pollen fastening itself to fur and wing, bodies exchanging breath, saliva, heat and microbial worlds in the dark. But Aphrodite’s dominion is not merely the promiscuous abundance of attraction; it is also the terrible particularity of attachment. The goddess who draws the living world toward itself does not love Adonis as an emblem of mortal beauty, or as one fleeting configuration of the eternal Tao. She loves Adonis. This body, this smell, this mouth, this particular ridiculous mortal among the ten thousand things. This is what love does to the great metaphysics of impermanence: it points into the teeming multitude and says, yes, yes, everything changes—but not this one! Let me keep this one.

If you worship beauty long enough, you become a student of decay; if you worship love long enough, you become a student of grief. Aphrodite can adore Adonis, mourn him, pour nectar over what remains of him, but even a goddess cannot compel the particular form she loves to remain. And this is where all our beautiful philosophies of transformation become difficult to bear, because grief revolts against metaphor precisely when metaphor threatens to carry the beloved away. I do not want some abstract cosmic father dissolved serenely into the ten thousand things; I want mine. I want the particular arrangement of matter that made him himself. And there is now another particular form I find myself petitioning the cosmos not to tamper with: my lover, another gorgeous mortal damned like the rest of us. He is a daring man who builds worlds with his hands, who seems to regard the impossible as merely a problem of imagination and materials, and whose courage has the unnerving effect of making life itself feel more possible in his presence. Tao may be promiscuous with form, forever making one body from the relinquishment of another, but love is scandalously particular. We fall in love with the temporary shape of things while the cosmos is already unfastening their buttons.

Chinese medicine locates Late Summer precisely inside this erotic contradiction, when yang has spent itself into such voluptuous excess that its opposite begins stirring within it. Yin is conceived inside the swollen fruit, the lengthening shadow, the damp congealing into pearls. The garden is still riotous aboveground while already secreting its future into seed and root. Everything is still here, yet everything is already leaving. Generation and dissolution are not adversaries in this cosmology but movements within one continuous transformation, each secretly gestating inside the other. The old Chinese physicians understood what the women on the rooftops understood: the withering is not what happens when the garden fails. The withering belongs to the garden.

And so the Gardens of Adonis begin to look to me like a little Taoist cosmology in broken pottery: the green shoot and the brown, withering stem are not opposing events but one continuous gesture of becoming. The women adore the garden at the incandescent seam where ripeness and ruin become almost impossible to tell apart, and I find myself there with them now, stretched between my father’s dying and the almost obscene vitality of new love, one hand tending what is leaving while the other reaches greedily toward what has just arrived. They seem to belong to opposite mysteries, but the season knows better. Impermanence does not make the mortal world less worthy of attachment; it makes our brief possession of one another unbearably precious.

I want to revive the Adonia, not as some expensive neopagan workshop with linen dresses and hand-thrown amphorae in an Ojai garden. I want it feral. I want the roof! I want every woman who has ever kept vigil beside something she could not save: the daughter spooning food into her mother’s mouth, the woman watching IVF fail, a forest burn, her own body become strange to her. Bring your dead and your almost-dead! Bring the house that burned, the creek that dried up, the breast you lost, the lover you left, the lover you have just met and are already terrified to lose. Bring everything you were foolish enough to adore.

We will plant lettuce in broken pots, fennel in chipped bowls, barley in old coffee cans, too densely and in too little earth, and carry the whole green trembling mess onto the roof where, for once, we will resist the modern compulsion to save everything. We will not optimize the garden or rehabilitate our grief; we will not turn loss into a lesson or interrogate the dying thing about what it has come here to teach us. We will drink wine, make a racket, and tend what is tender while the stems reach stupidly and magnificently toward the sun. And when they begin to wither, we will remain beside them in the strange genius of the Gardens of Adonis, where the gods make no promise that devotion can prevent disappearance. They have only given us somewhere to put our love.

Perhaps this is the erotics of impermanence: mortality makes us exquisitely susceptible to the world, each temporary form acquiring the terrible radiance of something that can happen only once. The ten thousand things blaze briefly into particularity—Adonis warm beneath the hands of Aphrodite, my father still lifting the telephone to his ear when I call despite not being able to speak, Jonathan bustling in his garden, building me a ceramic temple to Venus—and for a little while the great promiscuous Tao gathers itself into these astonishing and unrepeatable arrangements of matter. Here is the Late Summer garden trembling at the threshold of its undoing; here are the mortal forms we recognize among the teeming multitude and, impossibly, come to adore. What else can we do with such terrible beauty but fall to our knees? Let the women howl on the rooftops. Let Aphrodite kneel in the dirt. Let the garden flower extravagantly into its own disappearance. And when the mortal thing comes incandescently into your hands, love it past reason, past wisdom, past every spiritual ambition to transcend the temporary world. Dare yourself not to look away.

We find ourselves at Chunfen - the Spring Equinox - that luminous hinge in the year when the cosmos pauses to take its own pulse. Light and dark reach a temporary truce, the long conversation between them settling into a quiet, generative stillness like a moonlit lake where sky and water become indistinguishable. And if you listen closely, you can feel the entire planet taking a slow, ceremonial breath before the next act begins.

We open tonight with a poem from Tang dynasty historian of heartbreak Du Fu, who stands inside a shattered empire, looks out at the ruins, and notices something that must have felt almost obscene:

Spring had arrived anyway.

Then our poet does something remarkable. Du Fu does not celebrate this fecund display of grandeur, he grieves inside of it, every small beauty becoming a sharp instrument of memory.

And yet he records the fact anyway, because the poet’s job is not to tidy up reality, but to report what the world is actually doing.

The nation? Shattered.
But mountains and rivers remained.

And this is where the deeper pattern reveals itself. In the taoist imagination, destruction and renewal are not opposing forces locked in a wrestling match; they are phases of the same long cosmic gesture, the great inhale and exhale of the tao itself. The Tao Ta Ching says it plainly: “Returning is the movement of the Tao.” And nothing illustrates that principle quite like grass. You can burn it, cut it, trample it flat beneath an army of boots, and still the roots wait patiently beneath the soil like a secret society planning its next uprising. Then the spring wind arrives, and up they come yet again, soft green blades pushing through the wreckage with the serene audacity of life refusing to stay buried.

The viriditas and wood qi contained within grass does not negotiate with obstacles; it simply grows around them. It splits bark, pushes through soil, bends in the wind but refuses to break. Grass is Wood in its most democratic form… flexible, persistent, and gloriously impossible to eradicate. It doesn’t conquer like an empire; it spreads like a rumor. One blade becomes ten, ten become a field, and before long the ruins of yesterday’s catastrophe are wearing a soft green coat. Exactly the medicine this season prescribes.

Because this is the deeper truth of the season: even when the human world fractures, the larger pattern holds.

The Spring Equinox reminds us that healing often begins in moments exactly like this, moments when light and dark stand face to face across a narrow threshold and neither one quite wins the argument. Grief and renewal share the same breath as nations are shattered. And the body, which is nothing more than a small landscape inside skin, follows the same logic.

Wounds close cell by cell.
New tissue forms.
Blood vessels branch outward like tiny red trees.

Your liver regenerates.

Your bones rebuild.

And inside every organism lives a quiet intelligence, stubborn and precise, always leaning toward balance.

Over the past year the Botanarchy Hotline has followed the turning of the taoist solar calendar, tracking rain, frost, moss, wind, and fire through both the hills of Los Angeles and the interior landscape of the human body. Each transmission has been recorded in humble ham radio mono and sent drifting out into the world like a small ecological spell: mystery first, poetry as medicine, listening as practice.

What began as an experiment has quietly grown into a mycelial network of callers, listeners, field-noters, poets, herbalists, and mountain gazers tuning in from all corners of the map. And now, as the equinox turns the page on another year of seasons, the project is entering its next phase. After this episode, the hotline will be going underground for a spell while I begin writing The Botanarchy Almanac, a book rooted in the same practice of listening to the body and biome together.

While the line grows quiet, the archive will slowly surface elsewhere. Over the coming year I’ll begin releasing past transmissions onto Spotify so the spores can travel farther than the telephone wires ever allowed. In the meantime the number will remain active with spontaneous updates, and the practice continues exactly the way it always has: by noticing.

We find ourselves at Yushui — Rain Water — the second solar term of spring in the taoist calendar. This is the moment when what has been locked begins to loosen, and the body of the year starts to remember how to move. Here, on my perch in the wildland urban interface of the Hollywood Hills, Yushui looks like wet sage and split eucalyptus bark and the erotic musk of soil finally touched. It looks like the spoils of our winter labors flaunted flagrantly across hillsides and freeway underpasses. Places that, by Mid Winter, had already seen nearly a full season’s worth of rain in a few months, shattering old local rainfall records and padding the cisterns of watersheds that had been bone dry for years.

After a winter that felt like the sky couldn’t keep its hands to itself, the reservoirs have regained their heft and the creeks that once ghosted through dust are speaking in full sentences again. The earth has gone receptive; the soil lies open and steaming, and roots drink deep without apology, pulling rain down through their green threads like memory returning to bone. Beneath the spectacle, aquifers that drought had hollowed are being seduced back to substance, water slipping into subterranean corridors and settling into the pelvis of the land. The watershed grows a pulse. The basin exhales.

And whenever water restores its depth, something holy begins assembling in secret.

This week’s poem poses a tender dare:

What dragon-shape is gathering in your coiled roots?

In Five Element language, that dragon shape is wood waiting inside water. It is the uprising rehearsing underground. Wood is born from water, as spring is fed by winter’s dark reservoir. The kidneys loosen their grip on stored cold just enough for the liver to surge, green and reckless, without tearing the tree apart.

When water feeds wood just right, the hills ache with green and the stored rain begins rehearsing its ascent. The charge gathers and begins seeking architecture, for metamorphosis refuses to remain vapor; it demands a beam, a rafter, a spine that can hold the tremor of becoming. And this is when the caterpillars arrive -- small dragon initiates scaling the underside of the world. They choose their monastery in the eaves and fasten themselves to what can bear dissolution, suspended between gravity and sky while their bodies liquefy and reorganize around the rumor of wing.

And beneath the architecture?

Holiness.
Coiled in the root.
Coiled in imaginal cells.
Coiled in the broth of what once was.

Inside the chrysalis, self-improvement is abandoned for self-liquefaction. Enzymes turn certainty into nutrient soup. A new architecture assembles itself from dissolution. And Rain Water does this, too.

It falls.
It softens.
It dissolves what was rigid.
It feeds what has been waiting.

As such, this broadcast makes like Rain Water, slipping off the rafters like a rumor and landing upon:

The Botanarchy Hotline Episode 21: Practice Being Peonies is now live, a parable of refusal and rehearsal, of blooming only when the tilt and thaw are true. This broadcast is coming to you live from the budding boudoir of Lìchūn, the solar term known as Start of Spring. Lìchūn is a threshold, a subtle realignment of the inner compass. It moves the way warmth returns to cold hands—slowly, unevenly, as a blush beneath the skin before language can catch up. Winter still grips the hills, green and swollen from stormwater. Frost lingers in the shadowed folds of canyon and eucalyptus. But beneath bark and skin and old vows, something ancient stretches and remembers how to rise.

Direction wakes up before speed.
Desire wakes up before plan.

This is the season when potential grows moist and begins negotiating gravity. When what has been stored in darkness starts flirting with verticality.

In Five Element medicine, Water gives rise to Wood through a handoff of sap. Water holds essence, memory, ancestry, deep time. It stores what has been gathered through hardship, winter, grief, and silence. Water knows how to wait.

Wood receives that stored intelligence and asks a single question: Where now?

Wood governs direction, vision, planning, and the courage to initiate. Yet Wood does not create itself. It grows because Water has already done the long work of holding.

In the landscape, this looks like snowmelt feeding cambium and root.

In the body, rest transforming into readiness.
In the psyche, grief softening into desire… desire for movement, expression, orientation.

When Water feeds Wood gracefully, growth feels inevitable rather than forced. When the handoff is rushed, Wood splinters, bringing with it irritability, tension, migraines, rage, burnout, frantic planning without roots.

Lìchūn teaches the art of the gentle transfer: how to let stored life rise without draining the well. For Lìchūn knows that early spring reveals itself only by increments.

In the biome, this looks like buds tightening their grip before release, sap climbing slowly, birds rehearsing songs without commitment, soil turning sweet again, moss brightening by half a shade, mud reclaiming its holiness.

In the body, it feels like restlessness emerging from long stillness, the urge to stretch and yawn, dreams growing in narrative, grief changing texture, irritability signaling life knocking on the walls, a shy curiosity about the future.

This season teaches almost.
Almost awake.
Almost ready.
Almost moving.

Water does not shove Wood upward.

It saturates.
It yields.
It makes rising possible.

Spring does not require ideal conditions, rather arrival happens by attunement. Moss flowers appear—grain-sized, nearly mythic. They carry no spectacle, they rehearse abundance without needing scale. They remember the peony pattern and practice it in miniature.

This is Lìchūn instruction: gesture before declaration, form before flowering, direction before speed.

The body understands this language.
So does the soil.

And so this transmission gathers the sediment of emergent spring, flowing through:

🌸 The Disobedient Peony: vegetal insubordination and the ethics of refusing a counterfeit spring.

🌸 The Water–Wood Handoff: depth liquefying into direction; stored life turning toward articulation.

🌸 Lunar New Year at Lìchūn: impulse stirring beneath restraint, intention gathering before action dares to follow.

🌸 Calendar Time vs. Ecological Time: beginnings written in watershed and wingbeat rather than ink and quarterlies.

The Botanarchy Hotline Episode 20: Empty Mountain, No One To Be Seen is now live, distilled in the dark vessel of winter where form lingers in the womb of becoming. It’s the death rattle of January; the universe has withdrawn into its mystery school, and today on the hotline were coming to you live from the season of the occult and the obscure, where knowledge is transmitted sideways through shadow and soil, through what sleeps, stores, and waits beneath the surface.

We’ve arrived at the deepest still point of winter, the solar term known as Major Cold, winter after the explanations have run out. The ground is sealed, the sap withdrawn, and the animals who remain have aligned themselves with the season’s logic: burrowing, hiding, waiting, as outward growth gives way to a quieter, inward choreography.

This week’s poem is so quiet, it almost refuses to be read aloud. Deer Park opens onto a mountain emptied of figures, a landscape stripped of markers and narrative cues. And yet… the world is anything but vacant. Sound persists. Light returns. Moss continues its patient work in the shadows. Life moves laterally rather than forward.

Nothing happens here.
And yet everything happens here.

The Neijing names this depth Xuán: the dark, generative mystery from which form emerges gradually and without fanfare. Xuán is fullness before differentiation, the fertile dark in which life gathers itself before deciding how to appear.

Within Xuán, movement begins as Dòng: the faint stirring that signals vitality without spectacle. Dòng is the earliest circulation, the quiet confirmation that something is alive and orienting itself, even when the surface remains unchanged.

In the older language of timekeeping, this dark stillness is never an ending. Even at the furthest edge of winter, something is already leaning in.

In the Taoist cosmology -- in that ancient medicine that remembers how seasons move through flesh as faithfully as they move through weather -- this moment belongs to the element Water. And to the reservoirs of our water, the kidneys. And also to the emotion that accompanies depth, memory, and survival intelligence:

Fear.

When fear is in rhythm with the season, it gathers energy inward and refines attention. It lengthens perception and preserves coherence. It keeps the organism intact long enough for conditions to change. In this state, fear sharpens awareness without exhausting it.

When fear lacks shelter or proper timing, however, it loses its downward intelligence and begins to diffuse. Instead of settling into the depths where it can be held, it spreads thinly through the system, into breath that never quite lands, muscles that never fully soften, vigilance that never stands down. The adrenals take over, working overtime, trying to manufacture courage out of caffeine, willpower, and grit. The spine remains subtly braced, forgetting how to trust its own verticality because it no longer feels backed by depth.

This is where fear stops being a feeling and reveals itself as hydrology.

Wisdom, in this view, is the capacity to move forward without panic -- to proceed without needing constant reassurance, to trust the underlying order even when the path itself is not visible. Water does this effortlessly. It does not argue with gravity. It advances by yielding, guided by forces that cannot be seen but can always be relied upon.

If fear is Water’s alarm system, then Water is fear’s teacher.
It shows us how to descend without collapsing, how to wait without wasting, how to endure without hardening.

As such, this episode waxes hydrological on the following:

When our stenographer of the seasons Stonehouse writes, “I’m more like the flowering plum, I wait for the year-end cold,” he’s describing a mind seasoned by delay, a spirit that treats dormancy as training and cold as a finishing school.

While the peach and the cherry lounge backstage, powdered and perfumed, waiting for their cue, the plum steps forward barefoot into the snow. Not loud. Not lush. Precise. Spare. Fragrant in her restraint.

The plum does not bloom in spite of the cold. She blooms because of it. Without sufficient winter, her timing falters, her fragrance thins, and her offering weakens. The cold is not an obstacle here, it’s the final instruction. The flowering plum teaches a fierce, elegant truth:
some forms only emerge after prolonged restraint.

And Minor Cold is when this truth stops being an idea and becomes embodied wisdom, when waiting turns from something we endure into something we practice.

But this is also the moment when yang is secretly reborn. Deep inside the black-blue belly of the year, a spark of light turns over in its sleep and begins its long, slow ascent toward spring.

Winter is a sacred pause of concentration and contemplation that marks the drawing inward of our reserves, a time to tap the marrow of life and suck it deep into our bones to gestate the seeds of our becoming. In five element alchemy, winter belongs to the element Water. Water moves through the darkness with a flowing grace, navigating the unknown with the innate understanding that it must flow forward regardless, soft and yielding with patient puissance yet holding the strength to penetrate mountains and earth.

Water herself is pluripotent possibility, a multidirectional wonder. As the Mother of Wood, she carries the seeds of deep potential. In her poised quiescence as a reflective pool, she gathers the moonglow on her surface and stews the yin juices of mystery, a womb for creation to crawl out of. In her yang expression, she plunges forward with the wrath of a flood or the renewing geyser of a sulfury spring. One minute, she’s show-ponying around like a lacy icicle, then, she changes into vaporous mist, just like that!

I learned from my alchemist mentor Lorie Dechar that Water’s dual directionality is encoded in a Taoist symbol, the two-headed white deer. As the animal spirit of Water, the two-headed deer resides deep within the old growth forests of the kidneys, looking in two divergent directions at once – in one direction, the past, and in the other, the mystical darkness of the future.

Inspired by Yuan Mei’s crystalline winter poem Twelfth Moon, Fifteenth Night, this episode explores the ancient art of letting the small lights go out so a deeper illumination can find its way in, a gentle initiation into the practice of extinguishing, storing, and waiting.

The lights go out on purpose.

The Botanarchy Hotline Episode 9: Counting Every Falling Petal I Forget The Time is now live, drifting like mist over your local lawn mushroom commune. Call (833) ECO-POEM and find the place where geology and mythology rhyme.

It's the fourth week of summer, leaves are heavy with the hush before the heat, and today on the hotline, we count petals instead of minutes and forget our way home on purpose.

In the mythic green blur of before, when time was still a living creature, folks told time by crickets and condensation, by the way bees tilted homeward at dusk. Time was something you sensed, not something you measured. My favorite of these sensual clocks are the jiégì, twenty-four solar terms that carve the year into poems, etching the soft spiral of change.

The jiéqì, or 24 solar terms, are an ancient Chinese system of ecological timekeeping first formalized during the Western Han Dynasty around 206 BCE, though their roots go back to the agricultural wisdom of the Zhou and Shang dynasties.

Where the Gregorian calendar divides the year into 12 blunt months, jiéqì splits the wheel of the year into 24 nuanced thresholds-each one a climate poem, a phenological whisper, a bioregional divination tool. The jiéqì are not about productivity, but attunement. They arise not from abstraction, but from what farmers, poets, herbalists, and foragers saw and felt... things like sprouting millet,thickening mists, and migrating birds.

Each of the jiégì is a threshold, a tilt, a whisper from the earth that says: "now the geese are heading south" or "now the cicadas begin to sing" or "now the first frost cracks the persimmon skin." This calendar doesn't ask you to do anything,it simply asks you to notice.

In that spirit, this hotline transmission is a meditation on timekeeping without a clock, and gently saunters through:

It’s the first flush of summer, the air is thick with cottonwood confetti, and today we’re doing the hardest thing of all: absolutely nothing.

This week’s poem comes from Master Shiwu — also known as Stonehouse — which is exactly the kind of name you get if you spend your life in a cave writing poems that double as instructions for how to vanish into stillness and stay there forever.

A Chinese Chan poet, hermit monk, and perpetual wiseacre who lived during the Yuan Dynasty, Stonehouse used his poetry as a medium of instruction for Dharma. Reading Stonehouse is like soaking your bones in river rock riddles… spare, clear, and weathered into truth by a long apprenticeship with silence.

With Stonehouse as our hermit’s lamp, this hotline transmission is a meditation on the sacred art of idleness -- sitting in the shade of a pine, drinking spring water, letting the mountain speak first.

In ancient Chinese texts, the character idleness is written two ways.

The first is 閒 / Hsien, which shows moonlight shining through an open gate.

The second is 懶 / Lan, what scholar David Hinton translates as the heart-mind of trust.

Idleness, in this cosmology, is not negligence. It is not boredom. It is not couch rot.

It’s profound serenity.

It’s wu wei, effortless action, the spiritual art of doing exactly as much as nature asks of you, and no more.
